My worst developer sin is probably me talking sh*t about programs I could never have done better myself.
"Omg, this is so inefficent!"
"Omg, the ui is so confusing!"
"What kind of idiot would do that?"
...I'm not the only one who does that, am I?10 -

me: But, but it is scheduled to tomorrow, google calendar says that.
boss: Who put that date?
me: You
boss:....
boss:And fo you double checked it?
me: What do you mean?
boss: Double check! Check if what is in the google calendar is correct!
me: But that doesn't make any sense.
boss: No excuses!! Next time you must double check!10 -
For fuck's sake,if you are teaching "Machine Learning For Developers",you don't have to waste a whole hour explaining what the fuck a variable is or what is an if statement.Developers know what that is....aaargh.Off to sleep.13

Just had a Mac user in a Linux chat. Guy was trying to setup MySQL, yada yada yada... Turns out that the guy didn't know what a PATH is.
Let that sink in for a moment. A developer, with a hipster MacBook that probably cost him several grand.. but doesn't know what a PATH is.
Please kill me. 🙂🔫41 -

My favorite kind of interview question/challenge is anything that is highly practical for the job. At the current company I work, the coding test/interview challenge was to design and implement an API very similar to the core functionality of the actual product. It’s fair, tests for skills relevant to the job, and is much better than irrelevant silly brain teasers and cs questions, I feel.
In terms of specific questions, one of my favorites is one that one of my colleagues suggested I ask to potential candidates: describe what you think your biggest failed project/task was in your engineering career, and what happened/what you learned. I think it’s a good reflective question that can tell a lot about someone.3 -
The biggest problem with computers is that they do what you tell them to do.
Not what you want them to do.1 -

Client: ah, ok.

Dev: so, what do you think?
Client: just one point, that data is very very wrong, we need to change this ASAP!7 -

Got into a big argument with my lead developer today.
The thing is....he says that the Red Ranger, the original one (Jason) is the most powerful ranger. And we know this is bullshit because even Zordon said that the White Ranger is the most powerful one of them all. But his argument was that Jason did best the Green Ranger in combat. The great thing about coding is, every problem can be solved with logic. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
Often when I don't know what to do, I just keep thinking about what I want to have and break down what I need for that and in the end I always come to a good solution. And it gets easier from time to time. -
I have this project I've inherited, yea I seem to do that a lot, but this damn thing, has to run in php5.4, has deprecated functions for php7 everywhere and a lot of them and there's no classes anywhere beyond some libraries.
Everything is procedural with random scripts being injected left right and center.
I kid you not,
$thisThing = true;
If(x==y)
require "path/to/some/script.php";
else
require "path/to/a/slightly/different/script.php";
If($thisThing === false){
// well it was modified in that small block about 10 different times
}
Those injected scripts then accept data from the parent scope so, looking at file X, you need to have open file A,B, E, and M to understand where variables have been initialised and what there current state could potentially be.
Basically this thing was bandaid after bandaid for feature requests with 0 refactoring.
Here I am trying to implement some basic functionality (should only take an hour or so + a bit of manual testing) but no, I'm literally at the point of hitting the delete button on the entire project and starting again.rant why you no work what did i do to deserve this alcohol is your friend commented out blocks everywhere even with git there was no deleted code kill me now where the hell did that thing come from cocaine may help is this v2 file the right one don't do drugs18 -
Found out today that the company wants to hire the consultant that thinks that unit testing is a waste of time, CI and code coverage metrics are useless, DI is mumbo-jumbo. But 500+ line procedural methods are fine, you just start the method with a small essay of a comment on what it does...6

Hmmmmmm i just got offered a position for a php developer........but something that was not listed in the original application was that it is expected of one to work with wordpress. My wordpress experience is limited to creating simple themes.

Designer: These nine logo's come after the intro text...
Me: Wait... nine? How do we know the number of company logo's in that section is always nine?
Designer: Well that looks the best.
Me: That may be, but we're working with CMS content here. We cannot be sure that this company works for exactly nine clients.
Designer: What do you mean?
Me: In general the idea is that a CMS allows a customer to determine that for themselves. That is kind of what a Content Management System does.
Designer: But shouldn't I, the Designer, be in control of that? Nine logo's simply looks the best!
Me (trying to cope with the fact this guy's formal education is a joke compared to his ego): The reality is that the client being able to determine his own content is the reason we make this website. We will have to take into account the actual number of items in the CMS may be less or more. We could paginate it or randomize it if you want to use that grid of nine.
Designer: I don't see why I can't determine that.
Me: Designing around those constraints is what my boss hired you to do.15 -

TL;DR;
I was asked to give estimation on an app, that:
1. No one has a clue what it does, even though there is v1 on the store with almost 10% of functionality working
2. No one has a clue what should be in the new rewritten version
3. We are already behind schedule and I have no clue why, I've just been told that
4. They need UI flow that shows how the app will work with static data and when API's are ready (because ya know, writing code is easier than creating wireframes and modifying them accordingly) I will then need to link app with API as if it is as simple as drinking a cup of water, especially that: 1. What is water? 2. Do I have a cup or is it given, and 3. Relax bro, drinking water is like eating a burger, piece of cake!
I'm not sure what to do, not enough that it's React Native but also spaghetti requirements that no one was able to answer my simple question: What is the app responsible of?
P.S.: Some say I must rewrite the old app ONLY, no new features, others say: Turn the new web portal into mobile app, I say: WTF is going one?6 -
I have always believed that clean code is readable code, and if your code is readable, then it shouldn't require masses of comments to explain it. However, in the course I am being taught, we are being told that in programming, comments are massively important to help another developer understand your code and what it does. So what is the consensus of the dev community?
Do you feel comments are key, or redundant if your code is written well?20 -

Rant time. So, me and a few classmates finally finished and handed in a website for a web development class a few days ago. Before we handed it in, we had a meeting with the professor to discuss what we still needed to do.
Us: Are we missing anything?
Prof: Nope. Looks good. Just make sure you have stylus implemented.
Us: Cool, thanks.
We got our grade back today. We didn't do as great as we'd hope, and here's one of the comments that the professor left us:
"You forgot to implement all of the CRUD operations. -4"
WHAT THE **** IS THAT? We asked you if we were missing anything, and you said no. You reminded us about stylus, which we looked at ONCE in a 13-week class, but you failed to remind us that we needed all of the CRUD ops?2 -

Background story:
One of the projects I develop generates advice based on energy usage and a questionare with 300 questions.
Over 400 different variables determine what kind of advice is given. Lots of userinput and over a thousand textblocks that need to show or not.
Rant:
WTF do you want me to do when you tell me. It's not giving the right advice for the lights.
Why the for the love of.. do I need to ask you everytime. If something is not working. Tell me what and for wich user. Don't tell me calculation whatever is not working, I don't know that calculation. Your calculations are maintainable in your cms.
And how, like I really wonder, do you expect me, when not telling me what user is having this problemen to find and fix it, You just want me to random guess one of the thousands users that should be given that specific advice?
FCK, like 80% of my time solving problems is spend trying to figure out wtf your talking about.
And then what a miricale the function is doing exactly what is it doing but you forgot a variable. It's not like the code I write suddenly decides it does not feel like giving the right answer.3 -

After working with a bunch of people it occurred to me that almost anyone can work and learn for most IT positions. This is something that most people will realize, especially if they work with newbies that learn on the go. There are exceptions of course, but most companies are just making crud apps with their business logic.
What I wonder then is, why is it that the way hiring is done seems to be completely against this idea? Rather than whining about recruiters and bad interviews, I am curious about why this is so common. What is it that a lot of companies think or see that make their hiring process so bad or convoluted?11 -

What I say:
I understand computers.
What others understand:
I am the god of Computers I understand every Language that ist out There and what I cant solve is impossible...1 -
Some people just don't get it. When you meet friends who are either non technical or very new to programming, all they ask you is what language do you use.
The language is important but not everything. It's what you do with it that matters. Just because you know python, doesn't mean that you can do machine learning. Even simply asking what do I do is better than that!
The language is just a tool! Learn to be language agnostic please. Be a programmer, not a code monkey2 -

I am sure you are wondering what is that COMPANY that MADE the barrier and you cannot read it because it in bulgarian. Yes you guest it its "ASSIST". That means the COMPANY have THE BEST NAME.
Hope you get it. -
That moment when another dev has no idea what he is talking about but tries to convince you that what he says is the best way to do things.
How did it all ended up here?2 -
In all seriousness, the best part of being a dev is that you learn something new every day. That serves me personally as motivation. There are so many fields of study that embody what a dev is, and because of this, there are a LOT of things that you can do and create. On the other hand, the worst part of being a dev is the fact that we can't do it forever.
-
What is your greatest weakness?
My greatest weakness is that I don't trust people enough to let them know how the can leverage me by telling them my weaknesses.5 -
Contrary to popular belief, after having been in the working world I've realized that what matters and what is of value is book knowledge, not experience.
I find 'experience' an overglorified waste of time. Having in-depth knowledge of everything is what's important.15 -
That felling you get when someone cuts you off on the freeway and they are going 10 miles under the speed limit, that same feeling when project requirements change just before the deadline. That is what I hate most about being a dev.
-
what the fuck I can't edit the rant after 5 minutes I am fucking posting a new rant which have that last rant ...Why they update the fucking x code in every fucking 15 days . Well some libraries are deprecated oh cool I can use my shit as an object. And why third party libraries don't provide some good documentation of their sdk's . What the fuck is that and I will personally kill auto layout by entering in the mac myself. What is the use of that fucking debugging tool if I know don't the crap of my code that in which class I have done something terribly wrong what the fuck . Oh cool I am having that clang error and I don't know how to wipe my ass. And please fucking don't tell me to use xib code in xcode for my project if there will be 600 screens I will still fucking use storyboard for that. I don't fuck with xib files do you hear me. And fucking stackoverflow ..what the fuck is wrong if I forget an single comma during posting a question ..what the fuck..and you know what the real feeling is when I post a issue on stackoverflow and I got nothing from them expect some minus points...and then the holy fucking coder inside me tells me to solve that fucking problem and I feel like having dope bitch. FUCCKKKK..4

I'm doing work during the weekend. Just to parse this line of json.
Argh, what drive me nuts is after discovering that json response wasn't proper.
*sample - from what i seen*
{
head= {
data=value,
data=value,
}
}
This is my first time seeing json response with =. Since my assignment is to retrieve the response.
I cheated by calling replace over and over to correct the string of response to correct json format.
That is actually production stuff. Knowing that makes me sick to the stomach.7 -

My partner just told me that the guys that will "take care" of a project that we developed (see this rant https://www.devrant.io/rants/69328) apparently don't know anything about Android or iOS because our ex-client emailed him asking some questions on behalf of the new team like what is Swift and on what language do you develop for Android.
What bothers me more is that apparently we are too expensive but they are planning to get rich 😒 -

What if. What if all the developer are just one developer. What if all the world is just a training setting for that single developer. All the developers are just manifestation of one single developer.

What the fucking shit, Arch. In what universe/reality is a user expected to easily/quickly address GPG/PGP bullshit when they install Arch. It's already hilarious enough as it is for the user to input every single command in order to install the thing. -- That's actually what's great about Arch; you get return and assurance from each command. -- I understood the fact that you need the latest ISO release in order to even install Arch, but now, if you decide to pacstrap linux-hardened, or god forbid, a package that is who knows what, less maintained?... fuck knows what will happen.
The fantastic part, is that you can't do shit when you're in an arch ISO install. All of the simple and possible solutions that involve GPG DBs/keyrings/etc require you to have the all of the shit installed already; which is fucking impossible if the package manager is bitching about keys not being imported. The most fantastic part, is that there is probably some complete bullshit, ultra-exclusive command or simple solution that will fix this crap. - And if you even dare ask the Arch forums, you'll be branded as a "newbie" and sentenced to read the fucking wiki. - ??? -- That's not a fucking good thing. -- The majority of people who are installing Arch right now, are people who are installing it for the first time, and chances are, most of those people have no fucking clue what is happening; they're learning what is happening. Furthermore, they're probably the kind of people who aren't inclined (or they don't know how) to scour Google or the Arch forums for answers to vague, lazy-ass error messages. The whole point of this thing is show and confront the user about what they're installing and what they want on their computer. Holy shit. This is all the more reason to ensure that total, stupid, ambiguous bullshit errors do not occur. -- "error: key "dogshit master <dogshitmaster@dogshit.org>?" could not could not be imported". -- That's it. That's the error in it's entirety. For a fucking OS install. What the fuck.16 -

So, the other day, I was working in Unity, and trying to find the complement of a byte number. That is, 255 - myByte. So, I write this :
Byte newByte = 255 - myByte;
And it says that it can't convert from a byte to an int. Okay... So, I do this:
Byte newByte = byte.MaxValue - myByte;
And still, it errors the same thing. So, a quick google search proves that no matter what, the subtraction operator returns an int. WHAT IS WRONG WITH C#? That is the dumbest thing ever!4 -
Seriously getty images, what is wrong with you. Usually it is bad enough that sign in forms say username or email and then only accept one of those two options. Getty images only allows for the username, so i enter that. Doesn't work. I use the forgot password function, have to enter username and email, doesn't work. Turns out the username is the email adress and what I entered was only the display name. Seriously, how stupid is that? What is the point of a username when you have a separate display name and just set it to the account email adress?

I still don't understand blockchain.
I've read a lot of articles about blockchain and cryptocurrency and still don't understand it completely. the part I'm missing is the storage part (which is the main thing I guess). is the data stored in pieces in every device, or how does this go? what if someone unplugs their device, what happens to the info of my wallet that was stored on that device?11 -

I was sitting down at my desk today, pissed due to some more lack of coffee, and wondering about my future.
It came upon me that I absolutely despise what I am currently doing (job wise). There is a part of me that tells me that things are going to be alright, but that is just some nonsense that my mind makes up to rationalise how terrible it actually is here at this company.
I think that perhaps my abhor for my current position is a little more directed to the people and company that I work for, but I am really just fed up.
I have found quite a liking in terms of web-design. The clients and the work is a lot less stressful than what I am doing now - and I actually enjoy what I am doing. It is nice to see something come to fruition.
Perhaps that's the way to go? God decisions are fucking risky.1 -
Some of the biggest difference between an HR from India and an International one is that the question is not “What is your current CTC?” But “What are your salary expectations?”There has been this culture in India where the current CTC is used to determine your job offer, not what you’re actually worth for the company.16

There is something off with the M1 MacBook. I can’t pinpoint but there is definitely something different about the experience. Not necessarily in a positive way. The interaction feels lacking of certain things. Don’t know. It is what it is.
What I can point out is that the notification functionality is definitely a little off. Could be Monterey’s fault.7 -
GoDaddy. Is. The. Worst.
I'm working on an SSL cert domain verification for a client. The chat support tech at GoDaddy has no freaking clue what she's doing. She keeps telling me to follow the same help article I already knew about the first second I heard I needed to do this job. It didn't work. But she keeps going back to it, sure that I'm just a complete and utter moron who doesn't read. Never mind that I have screenshots to prove everything she's telling me is 100% wrong according to every error message this process is generating.
Now she's checking with the "SSL team". Which is code for "I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and I'm frantically searching the FAQ database to figure out what this SSL thing even is."
That's what the last hour of my life has been. And 20 minutes of that was waiting in the chat queue.5 -
OK I'm getting real tired of people posting stuff about Net Neutrality on here, as we all know about it at this point.
The one thing that gets me more angry is that these people get it wrong.
People look at this Net Neutrality thing and instantly think: "Oh, well, I would have to pay more. That's bad."
What it really is is that your ISP can see what you have been searching and would be allowed to send that information to a third party, or change the speed of your internet if you search something their sponsors don't like.
This is what you should be worried about. Your privacy, not your wallet.5 -
Why is real workable Linux with GUI so big? Windows XP is sub 1 gig, any Linux distro (real one that is, not Tiny Core Linux) is several times that. What am I supposed to use for my old ThinkPads and EEE PCs?

Current design philosophy is that the user should be presented with fewer options, fewer ways to do things. Users shouldn't be empowered to created what they want, but should be "guided" into building what we (software designers) think they should have. That is almost verbatim from our company's product and C level officers and is echoed without deviation by product owners and strategists in our company. Holy crap what a bunch of presumptuous, arrogant, idiots. That holier than thou attitude promotes disdain for the customer: "the customer doesn't know better, so let's prevent them from doing it any way but X." The focus is entirely on what's easier for us, not what helps the user solve their problems. That's not a service oriented anymore, that just a bunch of pretentious dickheads that are on the road to losing customers.4

(Sr. Dev) Oh right, you can't do that in the controller.
(Me) I can't do what?
(Sr. Dev) That thing.
(Me) Call another controller from the controller?
(Sr. Dev) Yep.
(Me) Where is supposed to be called?
(Sr. Dev) From the view.
(Me) But what is supposed the controller to be used for?
(Me) What is supposed to do the controller?
(Sr. Dev) The controller pass data to the inner classes. (Controller > Manager > Domain Object > DAO)
I ended calling 3 controllers methods from the view in 4 different views everytime...3 -

So here's a question for all the front-end web devs. I'm mostly a back-end dev, but currently learning Angular 6 for a personal project I'm doing.
Didn't realize that styling isn't what Angular does (or maybe it does, and I just don't know), but that you should use some framework for styling too.
So the question is: What is most commonly used, is it bootstrap or something like that?4 -

Yes, just like that. I am not sure what exactly triggers the update, but it is certainly possible.

The word "shift" in reference to a workday should NEVER be used in a dev environment. There is noservice that needs to constantly be maintained, thats what customer support is for. A shift gives the mentality that you have a set time that you are responsible for a service.
Devs are responsible for finishing a product on a deadline; that is not a shift, that is a fucking workday. I especially hate it when managers refer to them as shifts, because it shows just how little they understand what the devs are doing. They think of bug fixes like they think of flipping burgers; a task that performs a service. It's not a service, stop acting like it is.13 -
Today was the last day in a project that I've hated so much. But now I'm feeling kind of nostalgic. What the fuck is wrong with me?

We here in India are going through a nightmare. We have our CS syllabus from 1990s, we still write lab records, and solve 10 pineapples problem for placement training. Nobody really bothers about actual skill or knowledge, are like sheep behind feed. Passion is taken for granted and overruled by the “experts”.
A good education in CS starts from the hunger to solve problems that would matter to people. Future of CS education is in online courses that give out ideas to generate more ideas and inspire programming not as a subject but as a basic need of the hour. People should love the fact that CS is queer in many ways but is very powerful. Basics are important but the education must hold on to what is currently happening in the world.
World will be doomed when we start making students study the same thing what we did, except it is called Math. A subject has to be dynamic. If anybody agrees what I say, spread it so that world will understand what learning means... -

Holy shit I don't understand Rust's module system. Package I have not a single clue what it is... It "can contain one library crate and multiple binary crates". What? Okay so a crate is a collection of modules. Great, now how do you define modules? `mod whatever {}` probably. Then what the hell does `mod whatever;` do?? Import a module from a file with the same name (ignoring the fact that modules and files don't seem to have anything to do with each other). But why `mod` to import? How does that differ from `use`-ing a module? What is any of this??3

I wanted to know what is the worst mistake you make on database.
I have actually implements the logic of token access control on database and not on business logic layer.
The database have a login procedure which accept username and password. That login procedure actually hash the password and try to authenticate user.
If it is a correct user , it generate a token. In other to use other procedure on database , you must provide a token. By using that token , the procedure know who is it and what permission is granted to that user.4 -

Main reason is not being maleable, rejecting new stuff as the field changes constantly. The rest can more or less be tolerated (what can be tolerated for any other job, that is).3

At what point are you an expert in C++?
Herb Sutter's talk tilted "Back to Basics" (available on YouTube) contains the message "it's easy to forget that you're an expert" in the context of writing code that utilizes the latest complicated features of a language to squeeze out the last drop of performance.
So what makes someone an expert? Is it just writing production code? Is it groking the entire panel presented by a standards committee member? Is it contributing to the STL? Is it when you can write your own compiler while blindfolded and juggling rubber duckies in under 60 seconds?
What makes a person an expert in any language, for that matter?5 -
When in my 10th standard I was first introduced to java, that is the moment I knew I was going to be a software engineer (didnt knew what dev is at that time :p )

What do you do when you realise that the code that you have been maintaining code that does illegal stuff (written by others years ago, but you implemented major changes so that the illegal stuff keeps functioning).
Here, illegal is the violation of terms8 -
I hate it when clients send documents that aren't properly formatted.
I hate it even more when it's unclear what the content of the document is about. :/ -
A couple of years into my study all we have done is creating websites with php. This isn't what I signed for when I chose the study app development.
The issue I have now is that I'm in my last year and am lacking to motivation to continue with php development when in all honesty I just want to create apps.
I bet several people have dealt with the same issue but what I wonder is what you did to get through that period.4 -
@dfox what makes a rant a "Top" rant? I have one with well over 100 likes and it is not in the top rants. Not that I care mine isnt there, it just made me wonder what the criteria is.2

I heard that service side job is more pressured than product based job.and what are the service based and product based jobs ?what are the course that I need to learn to join in product based job. I have no clear vision . Can any one give a clear vision about this9

Serious question, what is the use case for Arch? From all that I hear about how complicated it is it doesn't sound very practical3

Nothing like code review and have to read the novel that is the comments on the merge request to understand what everyone's issue is with this one doc block. Wtf?

In the middle of a deployment call and the dev wants to "add a feature" on the fly (what could go wrong right!?). Next thing I here on our phone call is the client saying "great idea let's add that feature now! I'll wait to test!" Wait... WHAT THE FUCK is the client doing on this deployment call?!1

3D Printer problems
Anet A8
Fan problem.
Hey guys.
So, I have a problem with my printer.
The fan that cools the printed model (fan1) isn't working... and everything seems fine.
What should I do to find out what the problem is?
Thanks18 -
Why does rails have validation at the model layer? Isn't that what the table schema/migration is for?4

Ever get the feeling that your life is an episode of Friends?
That life presents you with opportunities and hope that your life might get better, and then everything turns out exactly the opposite of what you expected?

Modafinil what what?!
Ok so one of the guys at work is banging on about nootropics and coding to get into the zone..... Dafuq is he taking that for?
And I thought a cheeky trip was enough to envision the program and become one with the code...... Not that I know.3 -
Project Management class, that is currently handled by the prof that "taught" us Java that ended the course/subject without telling what OOP == disaster4

Saw today a little French YouTube video, "Me, Max, developer". With overused jokes (what mom thinks I do, what my boss, etc), and, at last, the job is vaguely explained, and the video concludes by "and, sometimes, by miracle, it works! And I feel like the savior of the world"
For me, telling that something works by miracle is a proof that you don't understand what you've done, which makes you some kind of not very reliable developer... -
I have no idea what is happening. literally. am i considered to be a human just because human beings decided to call humans, human being? are the words coming out of my thoughts, the real words that my human form is intending to convey? you! all of you! what is real for you? how do you define the right thing to do? Do you live your life according to your real self or according to what others expect of you? are you living your life truly? what is the truth? how can you consider a truth to be true if that truth has been made by the same creature that also had no idea of what the truth was and suddenly just came up with it? how?2

"Chances are, unless I’m a designer, I don’t know what I want. All I know is I want something functional that looks good, is comparable with my competitors, and features constant colour schemes for branding. I’ll look at other designs that have already been created and ask for something similar. Hence, it is important that you can take the information I give and help me visualize what it is you think I want." - Aditya Mahesh

For those who are on my team, arguing on not putting comments in their code:
How much ever (un)readable your code is, any peer / reviewer / future team member can only understand what that code snippet is doing, but not why was it written in the first place or what the hell you were thinking while writing that logic. So, it'll be awesome if you write that as comments or at least link to the story/design doc which warranted that code.3 -
Is Apple alone who owns the rights to its systems? Or do users also own the system when they buy the iPhone? What I know is that users have a USER ONLY license, a non-private, limited and revocable license by Apple. And if what I think is true and that Apple owns its systems, then it is a private right for it, isn't that true?. So why are governments such as the governments of the European Union trying to impose laws on Apple and try to impose changes on Apple's systems even though the systems are private and not public or open source? Is this not considered an attack on private property? I don't know, I just want to get your opinion on the matter more..
What I know is that there are options other than Apple's own systems!!. Therefore, if you want to change, take Android instead of forcing Apple to change what Apple does not want to change.9 -
What is the difference between slack and a normal, old school forum?
Both have threads, PMs, Images, Emoticons, etc.
Is it just the UI that got improved?6 -
What is this? I just recorded a HDR video on iPhone 12. It’s a video that I converted to a gif so I could post it but that is what the video looks like.
Should this be reported to apple?14 -

What is it with web devs that can't write effective PHP applications that don't need a 1 GB of Memory Limit?
Where are the days that 32MBs of memory was fine per request? Ugh...2
