Things I've learned throughout my 5 - 6 years as a programmer.
- StackOverflow is full of assholes.
- CMS's are for weaklings.
- The best feeling about waking up in the morning is figuring out how to solve that error in your code.
- You no longer think about normal people things. Your mind is full of code.
- You're practically a computer.
- ALWAYS backup and save your stuff or you WILL regret it. Enable autosave if possible.
- RIP your social life (if your friends don't know squat about programming)
- Darkness is better.
- Being a programmer is amazing.26 -

someone who thought me about computer when i was a child. someone who thought me machine code, and cobol. someone who thought me about the world. now he is, my dad, hospitalized again (12th times already this year) for cardiac arrest. and today, he is getting better and showing a lot of progress.
This situation thought me again about how life works and how hard can it be. my dad divorced with my mom since i am 3 months old and i've been living with my aunt since. and now he married again with a women with 2 child. i though he was gonna be happy. and apparently not. at the time of the cardiac arrest, his wife don't even want to bother and getting involved if her husband got anything emergency like this, every single thing is thrown at me (or my aunt), from calling the ambulance, paying the hospital and medical bills, accompany my dad, every minor perks, Everything and Always. Once, i reach the point and i'm very angry to her, but my dad always hold me back. and now i don't even want to bother, care, or whatever to his wife again. i just care for my father.
This will temper me more and more, for anyone who searching for your love of your life, please be careful. there is still alot of woman who doesnt have any heart.
Life is hard.10 -

Programming is a huge blessing i believe we all should be thankful to. For me, it literally turned my life around.
11 months ago i was fighting a losing battle with depression, and contemplated suicide constantly. I would use a self remedy of smoking weed and sleeping all day long. I was depressed because i felt my life had no real value. I was doing nothing, and its kind of an infinite loop.
You don't do anything, so you feel bad, so you don't do anything, and so on.
That was until i finally took the step that changed my life. I searched and wanted to learn something. I always liked web pages so i thought id get into web development.
Did some research, found out that the fastest way to go was to learn ruby on rails. I followed a tutorial i found online, and literally pushed myself through it. There were times when there where things i didnt understand, and when it was really bad, but i pushed myself through it and i finished the tutorial.
Just finishing the tutorial and learning something new helped me alot. I had already quit smoking and was feeling way better, but after a while i started feeling bad again since i wasnt doing anything after i had finished learning, so i started working on a personal project, creating it from scratch, and just working on it day and night. I worked 14 hours a day, never really leaving my room ( this was during summer vacation ) for a month.
There were many things i didnt understand, but i never gave up and always searched for the solution and read about it until i understood it better. Looking back, there were things i knew could have been done in a better way, but as a first project, im proud of myself, not because it rocks, but because i did not give up.
In the process of starting a new life, i was really lonely. I cut all ties with everyone i knew, since they were all toxic, all i had in my life was ruby on rails and my web application. I wanted to launch it but couldn't due to personal reasons.
Not being able to launch and see something live, something that you worked so hard on, that you put so much effort into, that was devastating to me. I felt as if all my efforts had gone to waste.
And here is what i love most about programming, NOTHING EVER GOES TO WASTE. All that effort you spent on something ? All these all nighters you pulled ? All that frustration from that bug ? It will pay off later. It always does somehow. You get more knowledge and become a better programmer, and sometimes it even gives way to new opportunities and chances you never even expected.
I included my web application in my resume and it helped land me a job as a junior developer in a really nice company. A job that i wouldn't even have dreamed of several months earlier.
Programming and creating something new and learning something new everyday, creating something that people use, that someone else will benefit from and be grateful for, i think we should never take that for granted !
Tl;dr : learning how to code and web development saved my life9 -
Jesus and Satan have an argument as to who is the better programmer. This goes on for a few hours until they come to an agreement to hold a contest with God as the judge. They set themselves before their computers and begin. They type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen, for several hours straight.
Seconds before the end of the competition, a bolt of lightning strikes, taking out the electricity. Moments later, the power is restored, and God announces that the contest is over. He asks Satan to show his work. Visibly upset, Satan cries and says, “I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out.”
“Very well,” says God, “let us see if Jesus has fared any better.”
Jesus presses a key, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers.
Satan is astonished. He stutters, “B-b-but how?! I lost everything, yet Jesus’ program is intact! How did he do it?”
God chuckles, “Everybody knows… Jesus saves.”4 -
- Was working in a JS file for a website.
- Decided to move file into a folder for better organisation.
- Made folder, copied file into it.
- Spent 30 minutes wondering why changes weren't working, questioning my JS skills and life in general.
- Called friend asking for assistance, he's as confused as I am.
- Realised while speaking to him that I never deleted the file that was copied, and had been making changes to that the entire time.
Needless to say I was a little bit embarrassed.3 -
Don't develop depression, develop a personality instead, be more outgoing and outspoken, work out, dress better and make your life shit that goes beyond coding.
Tired of people in tech being this way. Everyone acts as if monkeying away on the keyboard makes them some sort of autistic genius that is too good for everyone else.
Some of you have the social skillset of a fucking potato.
You code dude. Most of you develop websites...chill the fuck out.52 -
I vehemently despise the popular image of developers as borderline autistic savants living on junk food and working 24 hour days!
You see, I bought into that vision and became that person. When I first started working as a developer, I would work crazy long hours, eating junk food while neglecting my health and personal life. This behavior was encouraged by my boss and co-workers, and became expected, with the sales people boasting about it to the clients, like is somehow proved I was a better developer.
It's no big surprise that this kind of life comes at a cost and can not be sustained. I burnt out, my life fell to pieces and my body fucked out on me.
It's taken me years to repair the damage and I am still doing so.
I now work at a company that understands the importance of a healthy work/life balance, and I take full advantage of that.
Perhaps if I had a wise mentor when I first started, I could have worked smarter instead of harder and respected the needs of my mind and body.
I am that mentor now.
Developers are smart people, we should stop glamorising a stupid lifestyle.12 -
Riskiest Dev choice...
Leaving a previous job, moving 1000KM (620 Miles) away with no job prospects and going absolutely broke.
This was all in the name of “I need a better job”, so what better way to force yourself to get one.
I’m currently in my second job since then and now make just over double what I was earning before.
Sometimes it takes a high risk to get out ahead.4 -
The girl I loved for four years left me four months ago. It has been the most painful four months of my life and I struggled through the initial days. Both my health and my productivity suffered.
But I feel better now. Trying my best to keep moving forward and stay positive. Realised that shit happens and we can't just sudo our way out of everything.
Just wanted to share. Thank you for reading this far.11 -
Don't apply for a job that you don't like. You're gonna hate your life.
Don't ask for a salary you know you're not worth.
Work in a tech company as much as possible. If you don't, you're gonna be treated as a powerpoint presentation expert, office installation expert, video editor/movie maker expert, IT support guy, loose plug/broken headset repairman, facebook hacker, and a dark magician all at once. Most (not all) tech companies know who you are better. They understand your needs better.7 -
So I am running this crypto project that has dynamically generated private keys for a wallet stored in a Redis database. Nowhere else. The keys are generated on the fly.
At the moment of the happening the wallet had over 3.000 USD on it. I am testing new code locally, supposedly on a local Redis DB. Of a sudden, my code wipes the crypto keys and it turns out that I was connected to the live instance. 😱 Better don't ask me how.
Shock of my life. You know, when you turn pale and dark in your eyes, blood stops in your veins and you just want to die? Worst-case scenario that could have happened. All that money lost in crypto space.
Turns out, my good Redis hosting company kept backups for the past 7 days. Keys restored. Happiest moment of my life.4 -
Coding has impacted my life the biggest by having 'scrum' meetings with my family over dinner. I start with..
"What did you do today?"
"What are you doing tomorrow?"
and variations of (depending on the responses from the first questions)..
"Anything I can help with?"
It really opened up the channels of communication with my family. It's not unusual for dinner to take up to an hour.
Quite the contrast of my childhood where dinner was a "better to be seen than heard" experience and eating fast and leaving the table was a competition with my siblings.5 -
Internship is over and my one year old kitten is sleeping with me. Life can't be better.
Idk if he sees me as an older bro or something lol.
Anyways, good night, fellow dRs!6 -
All I can think about since getting this app is how much better my life would be with a devRant stress ball on my desk. Until then, my friend this fake potato will do.5

Met a girl on internet ( because I don't have a real life )
She: So what are you studying?
Me: Currently learning about Deep Learning but I also do freelancing in website development to pay my bills.
She: Okay so tell me what is a COMPUTER
Me: ....
She: ......
Me: umm... it's a... mmm.... actually it's a..... basically a.....
(thinking really hard)
*30 seconds later*
Me: It's an electronic machine
She: seriously? I expected much better from you
Me: I'm sorry!27 -
My life is hell
Got selected for in a start-up
Went the other day to finalize things
Bastard of a boss makes me wait for 2 hours
Then calls me and says "I have seen your game and i know your potential,,My development team isn't able to make this app,so I want you to do it alone,,Plus i want it better than out competitors product, and oh,,make for iOS as well"
Someone tell that bastard that unity game development and Android app development are 2 very different fucking things
Surely getting fured with lot of humiliation

The relentless feeling that slowly has over taken my waking life. The feeling that if I am not coding, learning or becoming better at coding I am wasting my time. I can't even watch movies anymore without reading articles. This is the worst thing about being a Dev, how when you are a dev you are nothing else.
At least for me, not sure how common this feeling is.10 -
Today I uttered words I thought I'd never say in my life....
"This is why linux is better"
What the hell is going on in 2020 lmao27 -
Nearly had to call an ambulance because of a sudden heart problem that left me strenghtless with fear for my life.
Hope you're getting a better Christmas than I do 😅5 -
Keep your arrogance, your fucking stupid logic and religious belief about everthing you say is right aside.
when somebody says there is a better way to solve a problem.. you can do two things. you either listen to them, validate the idea and accept or reject based on discussion or you just be an arrogant fucking prick and stick to your fucking reasoning, about your "right" way.
Don't do the latter. Wont help you become better neither at work nor in life.
FUCK YOU.

So i just wanted to say thank you. Everyone on devrant.
It became a safe place for me to rant about stuff, getting feedback from awesome people and so much more. Also i learned some things on dR that making my (dev)life better!
Most important devrant is making me feel way better, when you read about people having the same struggles.
But not only the rants are making this awesome. Its every single one of you.
Thank you, stay awesome!2 -

I'm a dumbass and caught the falling bowl of boiling cheddar broccoli soup with my residual limb, which means that my elbow is burnt and makes typing a major pain in the ass because of the damage.
I also have to grade 5 assignment groups of roughly 30 submissions and leave feedback.
Typing hurts and I regret life at the moment.
And I'm still on call for my primary job.
Please send jokes to make me feel better.42 -
I used to love my job.
Then I disliked my job.
The people I worked with kept me at my job.
When those people left all I had was my dislike.
Now I hate my job.
And I'm really starting to hate the people I work with.
I'm not even sure I even want to keep developing anymore, but at this point I couldn't support my family any other way.
So I'll stay smouldering for the next 40 years, in a career dumpster fire that's long lost its magic just so I can give my family a better life.12 -
A little late, and similar to other lovely ladies on here, but the greatest influencer for me is my husband.
He's always pushed me to learn more and be a better, cleaner coder. He taught me continuous integration, introduced me to the Atom editor, and showed me that my nerdy interests and choice of career can actually be quite attractive and not "intimidating" or "inappropriate” for a woman.
He's my go-to hackathon partner, my strictest code reviewer, and my life long teacher.
Ich liebe dich, mein Schatzelein! 😍7 -
Devs in our country are people who will allways have a job. Because companies here need us more than we need them. That's why we have 2x(jr-mid), 3x, 4x (mid), 5x+ (sr) average earnings country-wide.
Job is good, perks are nice, hardware is awesome (idk when was the last time I worked with anything weaker than i7), internet is brilliant (one of the best in the world; I think we have recently lost the "best internet in the world" title recently to some other country). Companies are fighting over us, offering better salaries, better terms. I was even bold enough to list my terms in LinkedIn's summary section and still I am getting offers :D
Devs' life is awesome here :)8 -
Devrant is the only Social Media interaction I have been using lately, rather than others. Every time I feel the urge to open other social media apps, I redirect my actions to Devrant.

I started saying 'yes' to every opportunity in life. Long story short, I have 3 websites, 2 logos, a couple of leaflets and 2 non-profit websites due yesterday. Whiskey with cereal never tasted better at 8 AM!3

I started writing a rant about my boss a while ago.
Never sent it.
Woke up to signal messages from her to our core team signal group that she’s been let go.
Starting to think maybe there is a god, because she was really pissing me off and micromanaging and making me want to quit my awesome job.
Also the new boss doesn’t want to bother making a job description for me but instead wants me to let him know what path I want to take, which certifications , etc.
Also got a maxed out m3 MacBook Pro today. The sleek black edition. My team is going to get our Dowding team logo etched into it.
Today was better than Christmas. Almost best day of my life.8 -

I just wanted to say how much I freaking love this place. I come here every day, and what I find is a magical community of people who are accepting of everyone, supportive of each others hopes and dreams and sympathize with those struggling with jobs or school or just life in general. DevRant honestly makes the world a better place, at least for me. Thank you @dfox and @trogus for this beautiful Eden!3 -
There needs a garbage collector in real life, for those who pass in front of you, walk in front of you, and light up a cigarette to smoke it while you're behind them.
"Yeah, but isn't it worse than those entering the tram after having smoked?"
Here's a better question: where's natural selection when you need it?7 -
I've lost my gf (she said she wouldn't want to be with a programmer, I said 'sure, bye') and found a much better and more fun career path than I had before.
Otherwise my life stayed pretty much intact, except for the fckn compile time errors and occasional 'fix my electronic device' or 'hack this social media account for me' requests. In retrospect it was more than worth it, would switch to be a professional developer anytime again.11 -
Me: Man this has been a killer week! Coding bootcamp has been better than I ever could have dreamed. Home life is good. Nothing could kill my good mood.
*opens up Facebook*
*Sees Microsoft is trying to pay billions of dollars to take control of Github*
...
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK
*Starts cloning repos like crazy*13 -
Why I quit playing video games 15 years ago, and how that impacted my life.
In a land far far away (probably from where you are) on a distant planet (probably for aliens reading this) In a typical city, in a typical apartment, I woke up from a deep deep sleep, the kind of sleep that you can only have if you've been up the previous 2 days binge playing final fantasy 7.
It was a day like any other, except, on this day, I had a haunting thought:
"What if I played my LIFE, like I did video games"?
Long story short. I couldn't play video games anymore. Instead of "working" I saw it as gaing exp points. Instead of "failing" I saw it as necessary to build up character flaws.... etc.
I haven't looked back. I created 3 businesses, I learned psychology, marketing, programming, law, etc etc.
I look at my current status, strength points, charisma points, intelligence points, etc.
And I'm proud.
You get the idea.
Later, I realized something else. If I work all day in front of a computer, how can I play in front of a computer too?
This could be a better post, but you get the gist.
Know the role video games plays in your life, and don't let it play YOU.26 -
New job on the horizon after being unemployed for a couple of months. Moving away from full-stack a bit to focus in on front-end stuff. Cool. Cool, cool, cool. Expect rage-filled rants in the near future 👌
Taking some time off was beneficial in all kinds of ways: got out of long term toxic relationship, got in betterer shape, learned stuff I'm actually interested in, mental health improved massively along with self-esteem, and I reconnected with friends and family. I'm actually enjoying life again. Don't get me wrong though, I had to claw my way out of a pretty dark hole... But I'm starting to think I fucking made it. This is a new start and I'm excited.
Fuck being in a toxic relationship.
Fuck working a job that is killing you.
If you're reading this and feel stuck: you deserve better. Listen to your gut, only you know what kind of life is good for you. It doesn't matter if it's a good job by every possible standard if it's making you miserable! A relationship exists to help you grow, to give you energy, to cultivate love. Sure, you'll go through bad times but if it's pathologically bad it won't get better on it's own. Trust me, I waited years for things to get better.
Anyways, good luck with whatever is challenging you right now, big or small. 😘6 -

That feeling when you try to get entries from a mongodb and it doesn't put out anything, not even errors and after 4 FUCKING HOURS trying, googling and looking around on stackoverflow, you realize THAT THE PROGRAMM DIDN'T EVEN CONNECT TO THE DATABASE
That's the stupidest problem I ever had IN MY ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE
Thanks devRant, I feel better now.4 -
Last Wednesday and Thursday were public holidays. Took leave on Friday and now at a resort beside a dam/lake. Now chilling with booze and snacks in a wooden tent. Life can't be better.
Morale of the story is Programming is not your life. Take a break.8 -
I did some grave and irreversible mistakes in my life
- Never gathered enough courage to mingle with women when I was younger and now the hope is lost
- Compromised my values and mental wellness when I met a narcissistic bitch
- Did not invest money wisely when markets were sailing low and allowed that good sum to sit in bank
- Did not plan health and term insurance at early age when premiums could have been low
- Out of fear, did not follow my gut to purchase gold because my father was acting crazy (or else my money would have been doubled)
- Did not plan my taxation well (or until now would have paid almost zero tax)
- Did not define strict boundaries and allowed people to overstep (or else I would have better friends and family relationships)
- Did not quit my job early and stuck with low paying shit with negative learning, for years (or else I would have grown exponentially)
Thankfully few things I did right are, spending more time with my mom and learning from my mistakes.
I hope I don't make such stupid life choices again.15 -
SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL ME:
HOW DO I STOP BEING SO FUCKING AWKWARD!!!!!!!! Tell me please, i swear to you. My life would be so much better if i wasn’t so awkward and have social anxiety. Tell me what to do because i’m tired of it, i hate it so much.42 -
It doesn't feel good to be average at everything.
Life is depressing
I can't commit to anything hard enough to become the best.
Programming
Singing
Drawing
Story making
Sports
I'm just average.
I feel bad
I feel like I'm a waste of resources.
I'm tired of ranting.
This life is just tiring.
I don't have the patience
I'm average at commitments.
Time management
I see other people code and sing better than me and feel demotivated
I feel like jumping of a cliff cause no matter what I do, there's someone light years ahead of me.
I'm not even unique
Ultimately that's probably what I want.
To be irreplaceable.
I guess in this struggle to be relevant I'm gonna lose myself and if I do get there, I might not be as happy anyways.
So what's the point to all this46 -
I recently broke up with my boyfriend of more than two years (we have known each other for more than four). My code (and my work in general) seems to have gotten better. Maybe because he's not always at the back of my mind. No matter what anyone says, long distance WILL take a toll on you if you don't meet the other person for more than a year. Nope. Nope. Nope. I'm loving the single life now and feel so much more confident about myself!14

Story of my life when I am really interested in a company:
Company: let's have a call to get to know each other.
Me: okay.
Company during the call: takes a technical interview
Company *a few days later*: now let's have a technical call!
Me: okay
Company during call: asks to design GOOGLE in GOOGLE DOC (??!!?!)
Company *a few days later*: now let's have a Development Test!
Me: okay
Company *sends an email* asking to complete a task which should take a week to develop in a few hours
Me: okay...
Company *a few weeks later*: Sends a generic email saying they got another person who is a better fit.
Me: ffs..16 -
Anybody else know that horrible feeling when you're 2 weeks and 1000 lines of spaghetti into what started as a 2 day 200 line side project that was supposed to make your main project better, but has now become it's own life consuming beast?2

an 18 year old youtube multimillionaire known as McSkillet lost $200,000 on csgo skins and $700,000 gambling and trading csgo skins so he fell into depression. he took his $265,500 McLaren supercar and ran into the highway in opposite direction to commit suicide, but in doing so he also killed a mom and a 12 year old girl from the car collision explosion.
life is very hard to be an 18 year old teenage millionaire, better commit suicide instead.
how do you guys feel about this?32 -
Fuck, I'm too tired to rant about shit. Life is really starting to go better and I just...don't know what to rant about, so I've been quiet for the past couple months.
Uhhhhh, whenever I close my laptop the screen stays on and seeps through but I'm too lazy to actually mess with it to make it turn off when I close it?
I've been hanging out with my best friend again lately and she's the best fucking person ever?
OH WAIT, I'M BROKE, THERE'S SOMETHING (I've spent like 10 minutes typing, just trying to think of shit to say)! But I'm just bad with managing money and I get paid on Saturday anyways..
Guys. I don't know what to even rant about anymore. Life is finally going good enough that I don't feel the need to rant all the time.2 -
2nd day in new job. Random HR training blabbing about something (thanks God all remote so I just did things around house). Blabbing about diversity and other corporate brainwashing. Then she proceeds to say that if someone is introvert and doesn't like to interact with people then such person should look for work in some other company (wtf x1). Next in line her real life story how she yelled at her subordinates (wtf x2 who admits to mobbing xd ) but that's ok because she is choleric and people have to understand that different character types make their team better xD
I have a bad feelings about where this is going...7 -
Its all fun and games until your malfunctioning software costs people their lives - if you're just starting out as a dev or in the "ain't nobody got time for writing tests" camp, I highly recommend you to lookup and read about the Therac-25 incidents during the 80s.
Even if you're not working on a life-critical/mission-critical application, the realization of the impact that us devs can have on the society can push you to become a better developer producing quality software...8 -
So I just received an email from a developer, saying my client hired him to take care of their website from now on. This client counted on me since 2012, so I felt a little... Betrayed. Even though this client was not big and a little difficult.
It's weird. I am trying to transition to something better in my professional life, but I'm not feeling confident of what I'm doing. Sometimes I feel my professional life is ruining. Uncertainty sucks.
Additionally, my desktop decided to stop working today and won't turn on. Oh well.6 -
Another smartass! Here we go!
Look, I'm an idiot and I'm absolutely aware of it. But you don't get to give an opinion without having the knowledge or skills. I may be young-ish and stupid, but that doesn't mean you're right, or that you know better than me ffs. If I'm down to earth, that doesn't mean you're above me. If you want my respect, then behave yourself. Just because you think you've "schooled me"...doesn't mean you did.
... Aaaaaand those are stuff I'll never say in real life. Gah. I can't lecture people I don't care about, but some do piss me off regardless. And what is with this sharp increase of people pissing me off these day? 🤔 🤔 🤔5 -
Mail: Meeting about new benefits from working at <COMPANY>. Estimate duration: 1 hour.
Me: Alright, I'll bite. Might even be something I can use.
HR person in said meeting: At <COMPANY> we'll reward you for being healthy by giving you a better life insurance.
Me: Sounds good and reasonable but you also said this didn't require a physical so how...?
HR: Install <APP> on your phone to keep track of all your healthy habits
Me: Wait wha-
HR: Generate our own brand of crypto currency by linking in all your other health apps like google health, and (lists 4 others), goes towards your life insurance and you can even donate water, food or books to the less fortunate! You DO want to help starving children, right?
At that point I just disconnected. I'm not paid to take part in a corporate crypto scheme.5 -
The other day a non-programmer colleague asked me:
"How do you know what to type in, like, did you write all of that?"
As I responded, he asked me another question; "but how do you know wuat to type".
I use to have those same thoughts years ago.
It occurred to me that through constant bugs, errors, bad (team) projects and failures that its become second nature, like breathing.
So, as an experienced developer to people just learning the craft and juniors. Don't give up on your collabs, don't be disheartened by group projects, don't be discouraged by your peers who seemingly try to make your life harder.
Take it as an experience to better yourself and teach them something.
These are the experiences that will make you a better developer.1 -
So I'm feeling a lot better today than I did yesterday. This shit's finally starting to give me some peace.
In the middle of my (first) morning cup of coffee, feeling pretty good about life for once. So I figured..why not do a face reveal?
This picture was like 5 months ago, but the only difference in how I look now is my hair being a bit longer13 -
Life is hard.
You are born. DNA gets determined. You go through infancy.
Puberty comes and DNA is like
"uh from now you'll pretty much have strong sexual urges, a huge desire to be sexually prolific, nothing weird like being pedo or into rape though".
me: Uh ok.
dna: oh, also, you're gonna be one of those late bloomers, you know, you talk like shit, you dress like shit, you smell like shit.
life: that's true and also you don't have anyone in your life to teach you about that shit, so forget about kissing, having sex, let alone being in a relationship for a long time.
*a lot of years go by with a lot of missed opportunities, mistakes and regrets*
life: ok, you seem to have become a decent sex partner out of a lot of scarring experiences, but there's one problem: you've fallen in love with somebody.
and you're married
and you have kids
me: well, does that mean I can't fuck other people?
life: yeah, no. I'm surprised I even have to explain that, it's called cheating. It will pretty much ruin your marriage, and fuck up your kids.
me: ok, I guess no then. I'm still fortunate enough to have sex with my wife right?
life: yeah... but you still want to fuck other people
me: what???
life: yeah, did you think that falling in love would make you not want to fuck other people? fuck no
me: ok, well I'm very grateful that I get to experience sex at all.
life: yes... there's a thing though, your partner has a much much lower libido than you.
me: ok, well maybe if I exercise and dress better that might change
life: that will definitely help, you'll feel more confident and have more stamina, but every time you retry exercising, you remember how much you hate it and how little stamina you have.
oh, I'm sorry, I forgot you had kids and work, yeah no time or energy for that.
me: ok, then should I just embrace a more liberal lifestyle, like becoming a swinger?
life: ha, fat chance, it's a very taboo thing and you're not that liberal, neither is she.
me: uhhh, i guess i can sometimes watch porn then...
life: watching porn regularly will make the only sex that you have worse, according to statistics.
me: ok, I guess I should get ripped17 -
Sometimes I wished there was no internet, computers etcetera and that the world would go back to the basics. When people from a village knew each other and married a girl from your village and lived in a wooden hut in the mud.
This all can be so much better than how life is at the moment. People ignoring eachother, fighting wars by killing thousands without actually fighting.
And yes I know some of us wouldnt survive it, Im not sure I would with my chronic kneepain. I cannot hunt because of it. I could be a builder or farmer maybe?24 -
Do you know this?
You are the small guy, you are dancing the whole evening with a girl and then a big asshole comes around, h
Judges you and want to be better that you?
Than je comes and insult you?
Damn that's the moment, when self defense save your life. :)
He tried to punch me, but then underrated my skills 😌
Ohhh man I love karma😌🤗7 -
Sometimes I wonder:
Who actually cares?
About what I do
About what I make
About me.
Why put in effort if there is no different result? Why am I always sad? What ruins my day? Is there really hope? Why? So many life questions I want answered. Do I care too much? I definitely think way too much. Why am I so lazy. The questions I have.
Cheers,
To a better day.13 -

I just decided to take some time off from work, and use my savings to survive next months. I have been dealing with work related problems for a few years now, and since last year I was sure I needed time to recover my health and improve my skills, to get better job opportunities.
I was trying to balance my life and my time, working a bit less, trying to rest, study, and so on. I was hopeful I could achieve my goals just fine with some adjustments. But now... I just don't care.
Last Thursday my mother was diagnosed with cancer.
Two weeks ago, my only brother lost his job.
The same happened with my bf, few months ago, and he needed to move to another state to get a new job.
There is so much going on... Sometimes I just feel like panicking.
It's sad to fear the future, and deal with so much uncertainty.
It's hard to deal with work and money issues. It's even harder to deal with serious health issues.
I hope things will get better somehow, but I needed to vent this. Sometimes life can be a bitch.5 -
Tools i use on windows to make life better, what do u use ?

Lesson of the day: If Visual Studio starts acting up (doing inexplicable and illogical shit that literally makes me question life), just delete the .vs folder. In fact, don't delete it. Fucking shred it with a file shredder. Or even better, write it to a CD and burn the CD.6

Why is it so hard to just build machines that work without all this ideological bullshit? Code doesn't care if politics==true. The world is scary enough without you assholes making modern life a data minefield for even the most educated experts, and taking advantage of the ignorance of everyone else. Fuck you.
I just wanna <look at web pages> without having to consider, counteract, or silently assist some fucking regime. Why is EVERYTHING this way? Everything is a back door or a data mine or a political statement? This isn't a fucking art piece! It's not your espionage tool, fucking codes in invisible ink and tiny cameras and shit everywhere! It's a <web browser>, and if it does ANYTHING besides <browse the web> that I didn't explicitly tell it to do, you better better not be the one who made it. Because if you did, you are what's wrong with the world.6 -
WanBLowS Vusta is more stable than this piece of shit that you call code. Yet you call yourself a programmer? Goddammit, even the shit that I dump in the toilet looks better. Because at least that thing is honest about being shit, unlike this craptacular mess that you call an application. Maybe consider kill -9 $(pidof life).3

To anyone asking for tips and tricks to start programming or become good at it, here is your ultimate golden advice: learn how to google and stop asking stupid questions like this before doing a quick research.
Reasons why:
1. You will most likely to learn better if you do your own research before asking for help. Even if you can't solve problem, you will be better and better at googling over time.
2. It is instant source of information. No need to wait for response (except response from server of course).
3. It takes only YOUR time.
4. Much more possible solutions/answers to your problems/questions.
5. Your quality of life will be improved over time. Not only your dev life but your daily life too.rant stop asking stupid questions how long this tags can be qol i am not your personal teacher programming tips tips11 -
I never thought I'd say this but I fucking hate my cousins and relatives.
Money and fame hungry people, constantly judging and excluding if you are not 'cool' enough. Give them attention, obey their orders, spend your money on them if you want to be considered human by them.
They spend 24x7 of their on Instagram with all their activities and gatherings revolving around the core idea of taking pictures and showcasing on Instagram.
All of them have inherited a fuck ton of fortune from their parents and live to spend. Nothing else in their life.
Their ideology is everyone should spend all their money and even if you have $5 in your savings, you are miser.
Cousins and relatives have bullied so much in my childhood that I had to go for therapy before I stabilised a little. They still fuck around and use me.
Now that I am living a better life than what I used to, they have started mocking my parents for it by shaming and excluding them from the family.
Not only I never wished ill but I prayed for their good health and success all my life. But all they did was neglect and ignore me.
Fucking blood sucking bastards. I still don't wish bad but I never thought I'd see this day where I'd hate them so much.
As I have worked really hard for my current life, because unlike them I had no fortune to be inherited, they pick some weak aspect of my life and poke it continuously to the point that it hurts me.
I never felt so alone. If not for my parents, I'd cut off all the times with such scums and move out for a better life with new people in life.8 -
I nervously clicked the join dark side button in the settings menu, then instantly like life got better.4

Majority of the hacking tutorials:
Tutor : Now we are going to set up two virtual machines to practice our hacking.
Me : Yes finally some useful practicals
Tutor : First one is Metasploitable
Me : What? This OS literally has its name derived from exploitable! How would it be useful in real life! But its ok, there is one more OS for practice, i am sure that one will be better.
Tutor : And the second one is "Windows XP"
Me : *MOTHERFUCKER!*
P.S.: I understand its not the case for all tutorial and it is somewhat necessary, but still it gets me a little.2 -
1. Manage my time better.
2. Find motivation to wake up and go to work.
3. Fake more smiles.
4. Kick ass hole (L)users in the throat when they piss me off...
5. Attend anger management.
6. Stop making shit lists.
In all honestly I need to dedicate more time to my personal clients and stop allowing my primary job’s frustration to drain my motivation to take care of their needs. It’s not fair to them that I chose the life I have. Find myself and attempt to love myself again. Create more time to focus on my health and goals. Surround myself with people that have goals and want to better their life. Find someone to share life with.
Then, with my luck; throw it all away and repeat these steps like a broken record. -
So, giving a talk soon and marketing wanted to see the slides.
Comments come back. On every slide that is purely visual they've suggested I add a title and a para or two of text.

Or even better, turn up yourselves and read lists of bulletpoints off the screen for 30 mins while I sit in hotel hot-tub with a cocktail.

Biggest challenge was to accept that no matter where you go, what you do, you will have to deal with stupid people.
They come in all ranges, starting from hr, interns, juniors, coworkers, code reviewers, seniors, managers, boss, clients.
And in order to grow in life, you have to learn to deal with them. Better even if you could make them a little less stupid.2 -

You know what's better then the Twilight love story (or any love story for that matter)?
The contract between an Indian client and an Indian Vendor. It's the perfect marriage!

Hope you all are surviving well
Few changes here and there in my life and staying away from lots of things including DR. Not technically a rant but kinda a summary of my current life story.
- broke up with gf (to be precise, I dumped her because I don't wanna have a RS anymore). Pretty bad thing for her and she is still having a hard time accepting it.
- took a second job, part-time.
- trying to get few more part-time/consultant kind of jobs.
- step down from CEO/CTO position at my business and trying to focus just to be a better CTO.
- 80% of sale teams resigned or asked them to resign.
- found a new investor but no cash received yet.
- have to touch nodejs (at the part-time job).
- left side eyelid is twitching pretty frequently lately.
Not much. That's about it. Now let me check what the heck are you all up to lately.17 -

Sometimes when I have a 10s break, I think about what I did to get here, and what to do to get... somewhere alive (if possible)
6 years ago, I got my high school diploma in letters.
5 years ago, my depression started while I went to a development / management school. Dropped off one year before graduation, but I prefered to stay alive than having this diploma in my coffin.
1 year ago, I got this (kind of shitty but it pays well but it has drupal so fuck) job and my depression ended.
In two weeks, I'll get back to school for this last one year that I'm missing, so I'll finally get a better diploma.
Within 4 years maximum, I'll leave France to start a new / better / better paid life in Canada.
One hell of a ride, ain't it?5 -
Should I care about privacy anymore ?
I had to switch to windows from Ubuntu in my laptop because of driver related issues.
Everytime I use Windows , I feel uneasy because of the data it collects but at the same time I am happy that I can play a couple of video games , my battery life is better and my display is better.
I own an Android phone , and no matter how many add ons I use , or VPN , I know that Google gets sufficient amount of data to know a lot about me.
It's getting harder and harder to keep my data private and it's becoming inconvenient as well.
In my country almost everyone I talk to uses Whatsapp. I removed my Whatsapp account for a few days and I barely talked to anyone and it was not a good feeling.
My point is , is fighting for privacy worth it ? How much inconvenience are we ready to accept ? Can I do anything to keep my data private and still use convenient services ? Please enlighten me .21 -
Any devrant-ers at the Kansas City Developer's Conference (kcdc) right now? Right now = July 12th & 13th, 2018.
If you see me, I'm that guy who just grabbed a handful of life saver mints at the vendor booth. Yea...*that* guy.
Rant? Only thing so far is the heat (air conditioning can't keep up with the outside) and breakfast (see attached). I guess some people call that breakfast, but I suppose its better than nothing. -
Random thought of the day. I'm sure I've been told the "common wisdom" is that you can take a job with a lower salary and enjoy a better work-life balance, or go gung-ho for the inner city jobs and earn way more but sacrifice your quality of life.
Anyone else found the complete opposite? The higher the salary I've had over my career, generally the *better* the working environment and the more the employer seems to care for, and value its employees. Not universally true I'm sure, and perhaps I'm just lucky about where I pick, but I've certainly had way more "high stress" situations in some of my lower paid, rather than higher paid roles.9 -
I just learned Javascript doesn't have tuples and nearly cried and/or vomited all over my keyboard. Pls no.12

The debugging process is often complicated.
There are often many factors involved in troubleshooting an error, but usually I have a hunch.
Sometimes I'll ignore my hunch and try other, smaller fixes first. This will irritate me for a while until I actually go after my hunch, run the program, and INSTANTLY everything works again.
Found myself relating that to real life today when I had a slight belly ache and eventually decided to take a massive shit and INSTANTLY felt better. The relief was so quick that I actually looked up and paused in surprise.3 -
So fed up of existing.
I am not saying that I am suicidal, but if a truck was accelerating towards me, I would not bother to move.
Even though I consider myself decently successful in life in terms of career, friendship, and to some extent, family. I strongly feel that I am in a very wrong environment.
I have zero trust, safety, love, and nurturing care from my parents and others around me.
I lack physical privacy, psychological safety, and emotional void.
My hypothesis is that if I was in a better environment with slightly lesser responsibilities and needs better met, I could have achieved wonders. With that, who wouldn't?
Why do we exist? Just to suffer?25 -
Not only coding, but studying Computer Science has changed a lot in my life. For example, learning about CPU scheduling algorithms made me manage time for my personal tasks a lot better. Earlier I used to waste a lot of time by doing tasks in out of sync order. Also coding made me realize how dumb most people are!3

I am such a fucking idiot i cannot believe how many stupid things i have done in the past hour because i was horny and bored. I cant believe i saw none of the signs its so fucking glaringly obvious and now my life is essentially over. I dont know how im going to show my face to anyone I know its so fucked up. Met a person on chat roulette, then skype, started cybering on cam then she told me i would show her my credit card and give her money unless she would send the video to everyone on my facebook list. I dont even know why i added her on facebook, just a false account to get my friends list and now every one i Know is going to see my dick. I didnt give her my card because im not that dumb and eternal humiliation is better than having my bank account cleaned but I dont know what im going to do.

Here's an advice to you guys:
Ever look at your mailbox and think it's so full of junk?
Archive all your current emails.
Then next time you get any spam emails take the time to unsubscribe or block the sender.
Trust me, life is so much better after you've got rid of those craps. And it's not that hard like it seems. In a week you'll probably get rid if 90% of those.3 -
I just came out of over 4 weeks of loneliness with no real life face to face interaction at all because of lockdown. The only time I saw another human being was when I went to the grocery store, but they were strangers.
Last few days, I started experiencing the side effects of having no real life social interaction.
My throat was getting constrained, it felt I had many things to speak and everything is stuck in throat. It felt as if my throat was choking me. I was feeling very stressed. It brought the flashbacks of the time when I was seriously depressed. I couldn't really sleep last night
Today, I decided to visit my close relatives, the place where I grew up, the place I find as my heaven on earth and I feel so much better just being in the presence of people who know me, whom I know since I born.
I don't know if anyone here experienced similar feelings. I wanted to share it here.2 -
Question for the old timers: is it possible to work as a dev for the rest of your life and be happy?
.
.
.
Does it get any better or is dev burnout baked into the business model of every company?
The CEO flat out admitted it was exactly that where I'm at a few weeks ago 😞16 -
It has taught me to accept that I am frequently wrong. Not just when faced with code but with people too.
All the years of "It can't possibly be MY code that's wrong" which of course always turns into "Well, I guess it was my code..." Had helped me think critically in relationships, politics, and many other areas of my life.
Programming had actually heavily influenced my behavior and I would say it is largely for the better.
However, one negative effect it has had on me is that I am less of an optimist. Code is very "cause and effect". This means a lot of my life is "no surprises" and "you get what you give"
So I often feel like the most likely outcome is probably just the one that's gonna happen. There are no surprises, no miracles. Life is cause and effect. -
Wondering how many of you have ADD/ADHD, diagnosed or not. I've heard people say that many programmers have ADD or ADHD and that it generally makes them a better programmer. I myself have ADD and I feel like it makes me a better programmer, but I have to work harder at paying attention to my wife/social life.24

To everyone involved in my last rant, I deleted it because it was just going in the direction of "this guy thinks he's better than everyone, boohoo you have to revert to a perfectly acceptable laptop" and so on.
My intent was to compare my two laptops as a follow-up related to my HDD doing shit, but everyone took it the wrong way. So please, don't continue this discussion over this rant because you think I am spoiled or anything, I get your opinion, I disagree with it, you disagree with my opinion whether you get it or not...
That being said, I still think everyone can rant about what they have (assuming it was bought with their own money) without being called "spoiled". If you own a sports car or a great computer, you can hate the fact that you have to go back to an ordinary one. If you have a great house and it's destroyed in a fire, you can hate having to go back to a normal apartment. If you're a CEO, you can rant about going down to normal employee.
To everyone who has a crappy laptop or whatever that converts to in any other field, I can only wish that you'll upgrade it to a better one. To everyone that has a great laptop that's breaking down, I can only wish that you'll get it fixed and will be able to get off your older laptop you have to use meanwhile. Use your money the way you want, decide for yourself what parts of your life you want " more than average" and which ones you want just average, and live with what you want.
I don't really know what the whole point of this rant is... I wrote it without re-reading it, so feel free to ignore it, but I just wanted to address this. I'll still give updates about me fixing my better laptop, so to everyone wanting to comment on it, do as you wish. I just don't want another "Quality of life" war to happen, that wouldn't lead anywhere.
Sorry for this rant if its stupid, but I'm feeling a bit better now :)7 -
Fucking kill me. I've just agreed to make a shitty fucking app that would be better as a Webpage, using shitty fucking technologies I don't understand, to do a thing that would be better handled by a third party.
You know why? The guy who asked me to do it is a good friend, and I'm the "best (only) code monkey" he knows. FUCK MY LIFE.
At least I'm getting payed7 -

I'd like to give a shoutout to the best tool I ever had when I worked in hardware and had to troubleshoot ethernet. The "RLFLTWKW". (The Really Long Fly Lead That We Know Works)
My friend that I worked with long ago just dug it out of a drawer and sent me a photo so we could remember the days when trying to figure out why Mavis couldn't get on the network anymore could be resolved by our faithful friend "TRLFLTWKW". I miss you buddy. You made life so much better.

As an introvert, this is a big challenge. A few years ago, I buried my social life to be focused on my work. But after some years, I realized this was doing more harm than good to me.
Since then I try to dedicate more time to friends, social events, and family. It's not easy to keep in touch, invite to a coffee, joining a class/activity and meet new people. Everyone's life is so busy today. But it's worth.
I always feel so much better after have a good conversation, sharing experiences and ideas.2 -
Jesus and Satan have an argument as to who is the better programmer.
God chuckles, “Everybody knows… Jesus saves.” -

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
There was a task of fixing up a payments page that features pretty complex logic. Initially it was like 200 lines of code, seems short but it was a fucking spaghetti mess. Never seen more cognitively complex code in my life.
So I delete the spaghetti and pull out the 500 lines fucking state machine. It works perfectly. It’s perfectly understandable even though it’s longer.
This is how I deal with problems. Shorter code isn’t always better code.4 -

I'm one of those self improvement assholes. I want to always strive to be better and to see what works and what doesn't.
One way to keep track of how satisfied I am with my life, I have a prompt at 20:00 to self report a score, 1-5 how happy I am.
It's like a minimal journaling system. Sometimes I motivate why I feel like shit.
Does anyone here do something similar? Not counting your GitHub commits.
Do you track progress when doing things in some visual way? Projects, working out, whatever.

For those who use Windows, have a desktop and notebook computer and want to use the same keyboard and mouse on both.
Windows has a program called "Mouse without Borders" that let you use the mouse and keyboard of one computer on another like a dual monitor setup. It's works via LAN and I have to say that I haven't any lag. You can copy text from one computer and paste into another and you can drag files too (that are copied to a special folder).
My desktop computer has a big monitor and of course it's better than my notebook and I don't want to spend money in another monitor, so this is a life saver for those who are in the same situation.
Cheers!5 -
"But using XYX is better and it's not hard to set up!"
No, fuck you and your recommendations.
It's too time consuming to set up that blazing-fast minimalistic modular shit, because I know I'll want to configure it to perfection until I bang my head against my tiny keyboard when I have finally realised that all the config I went througu only achieved the same outcome as the 'bloated' software I was originally using.
So, fuck you.
I'd rather get on with my life and get some work done.
It's not like I wasn't aware of XYZ in the first place; I'm not using it because I know what's more important to get my shit done.2 -
Be yourself, don't make yourself look better (or worse!) than you actually are. Also, I never made a side project in my life and I landed every job I applied for. Don't pretend to be someone you're not.

They said do freelancing, you get to take off days whenever you want. But, I haven't taken even a single day off, after starting freelancing.
They said do freelancing, you will have better work-life balance. But I feel like, I just code and go to the gym and sometimes make YouTube videos.
They said do freelancing, it's better security-wise. But, every month I'm fucking petrified thinking if I even will survive and pay my bills next month.
They said do freelancing, you can work and travel at the same time. But, I've been married 7 months now and haven't taken my wife to honeymoon trip yet.
Am I doing freelancing wrong?13 -
Is it okay for software engineers like us to go out to eat every day? I just don’t find the time to cook for myself. And honestly the time spent cooking would be better spent learning (judging by our hourly rate). Do you think it’s okay for devs to have such a luxurious life style (eating out is a privilege!) because our minds are so taxed on learning and creating?4

Thanks for the update and for me to get a new one and it was the same as the one I have is a trial run to the store and get some rest and feel better soon and that is why I am asking for a friend to talk to you about your day and I don't know yet if I can get it to me by the end of the day I was in the shower and then I will be able to make it
--------
Do you ever feel there's like no real point to life, like you could die tomorrow, you wouldn't really care?
I feel life is ok, I've got it a lot better then others in my situation at least financially. But in terms of relationships probably not and I don't have much interest in developing any.
And looking at the future, I just don't see it going anywhere or getting any better? I could be easily replaced, forgotten, not doing anything meaningful.... And the only other people that would notice and remember are my parents.
I enjoy doing things but in the long run they make no difference. I can have short term goals like maybe for the next few weeks, months but if someone asks where do I what to be a year from now, what do I want to accomplish, there answer is "I don't know and I don't care"...
And I guess that's the point, each day sorta just feels like whatever...13 -
Started using a password manager. Never thought life would be so easier.
Btw, I'm using Lastpass (on free trail now). Any better recommendations, friends?14 -
Problems. We get them frequently, to me it feels like life is not about being happy and all, it's about how you handle your problems. Any kind of problem, be it work related, you personal life anything.
Developing the skill to deal with different kinds of problem is what makes your life better and better.
What world taught me till now, to run away from the discomfort, a lot people talk about how environment is bad, and you should not take shit from anyone. But few things tell us what's actually lack inside us. Maybe, on social media we don't boast a self awareness based thinking because is makes people uncomfortable to think about their own behaviour. Self awareness is becoming more and more important for me now. I am trying to keep my self love intact, it's hard though. But knowing your own shortcomings and taking actions to understand and do something about them makes me feel in more control. Makes me happy. :)
I'm writing this, because I just got a work problem and I snapped and closed my laptop very impatiently. Then in few seconds I realised, it's a kind of a problem that I should try to 'deal' with and not go into a loop of self hatred. Even though my heart ja racing fast, and all the hormones which are making me wanna feel sad, I feel aware and more in control that hey, you are feeling this because this problem has these consequences but let's try to solve it. :) -
So this one is interesting.
As I have mentioned on my site, I'd be one of the below:
1. Anthropologist
2. Archaeologists
3. Sound engineer
4. Musician or Artist of some kind
5. Travel guide
6. Museum curator
7. Or maybe own & run a Burger joint with Rock n' Roll playing all day
After spending much time in front of screen, I felt like would on field job be better for me, in terms of physical and mental well being?10 -
If I don't stop being a piece of shit entropy will prevail and my life in general will suck
I need to do something different like stopping being a crazy bastard that literally does exactly the same fucking things over and over and then denies them when someone confronts me
I need to admit that time is passing and has passed and it's devouring me
And a big part of this is not trying to cover my tracks because I'm not I'm fucking myself.
With the more positive changes I make the better the world around me will become.
I've been failing and I keep getting it worse in general.7 -
At 12:38 AM, I am working in the office alone on a project that I hate with my guts.
Since last month I am feeling nothing. In the morning I don't want to get up and go to the office. I do not feel any excitement in my job. Even I hate talking to people, I still have to join 4 meetings and talk to them.
As the Project Manager, I hate taking responsibility for other people's code.
Writing emails to stupid business people and talking to them at the meeting, I hate those people.
I have worked for almost 16 hours per day for 2 months to finish this project. Even worked on Sunday. The project is not finished. The scope and requirement get changed daily. The client has no fucking idea of what they want.
I have no fucking idea what I want to in my life. I just want to go home and get a good fucking sleep.
Whoever is reading this, I hope you have better time in your life than me.
And please tell them this will get better. I need to hear it.5 -
I'm not one to shit on Windows, because I use it extensively in my daily life (Streaming, Gaming, Coding etc)
but I'm driven crazy by this fucking TEAMS app. It starts itself right after booting, doesn't want to close without me firing up Task manager and ending the process.
And in the "Startup" tab I've disabled it two times but it will just Enable it by itself. This is borderline criminal practice of writing software.
Are you saying I should just remove Teams?? Pfftt.. can't do that either. Joining a Teams link on the browser is so painful that it's better to just jam scissors into your eyeballs.
Fuck you, Microsoft. Sincerely.9 -
If all the 24 years of my life have taught me anything, it’s that I am not at all good at time management.
That’s why I am always stressed. And I hate that I just can’t seem to make it better. Short motivational bursts are good, but I need a permanent solution!3 -

I have this urge to get better at coding and software architecture and design. But fuck me if I'm not lazy about it.
All these crazy good books and lectures and here I am, doing jackshit to improve. Can't even finish my own personal projects. Bah.
I know how I'm supposed to go about it, how to keep engaged in a cycle of personal betterment. I lack self-discipline to do it though... Tried meditation for a time, but haven't really stuck to it. Currently trying to follow stoics (Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and some others), but the mindset is not so easy to adopt, and the practical philosophies even harder.
Oh well. Life is hard. Blah-blah-blah. Thanks for reading. Just wanted to vent, really.8 -
It feels weird now. I don't really have much to rant about. That's partially cause I haven't been doing much dev work lately (but the bit I have done, everything's been fine). My personal life is going fucking great for once, so nothing to worry about there (the girl I'm talking to is so fucking sweet, and just amazing overall)
Life is fucking good guys. I hope everyone that might have had a bad day or a bad week or whatever feels better soon. -
I’m extremely frustrated with my job situation. I want to code, I absolutely love building stuff with software. My current job is a “tech” job, but involves absolutely zero coding. I don’t know what else I can do to stand out more or make myself a better candidate.
-I’m a new-grad with a flawless in-major GPA (computer science major)
-I have other past internship experiences that involve coding
-I frequently do my own side projects and post them to GitHub
-I work well on teams (life-long and collegiate athlete)
I apply to tons and tons of places only to get no response, or to have a single fucking interview and then get dropped
Fuck this stupid shit I am so frustrated8 -
Dads of DevRant: Will I ever be able to work on personal projects again? I have a half-complete project that was going really well, that I have immense enthusiasm and drive for, but I just can't get to it, kids/family takes up 100% of my time & it's honestly depressing me. I'm finally at a stage in my career/skills where I could complete this; the technicals and business are all within my grasp, but I've fucked myself by having a family, my life isn't mine any more, I gave it up. Not their fault. But will it ever get better? Maybe someone out there understands this pain; nobody around me does, I keep it inside.13

Second week sick I see how my life slowed down and how meaningless everything around is, everyone is rushing about some bullshit, name it new amazing job opportunity, black Friday great deal, super duper product idea or some most important bug on production that we need to fix asap.
All that can’t wait a week when I’m healthy?
Seriously, people lost their minds in today’s world to some bullshit.
I’m to old and to depressed to care about such idiotic things. Living my life as I want and on my own peace, don’t care everyone is running, I’m slowly walking and I like it.
It’s better to walk straight than run around like an idiot.1 -
I wish there was a community version of CLion 😞
Dear JetBrains, if you read this. Today is my birthday. You can make my dev life better.3 -
I used to be at a company where it was kind of expected that you worked long days, which made it quite difficult to balance work and private life. It got so out of control that I was even called to work while I was on my holiday. At first I started with shutting off my phone after work hours, but the real solution I found was moving away from that company.
Pretty much everyone at my new company just stops working when the clock hits 4 or 5 pm unless there is something critical that needs to be done. Seeing that also discourages me (and everyone else) from working long days. We are also quite open about our workload so if anyone thinks they’re overwhelmed they can find a relevant person to talk to and eventually a solution is found. The salary isn’t incredible, but the work/life balance and the benefits I get are just way better than getting paid more and living to work.
I think a lot of people go for the high salaries, most of the time disregarding the other part of the equation. If the company has a meh work culture with low regard to employees’ work/life balance, there isn’t much the employee can do besides finding a place to work with better wlb. I’d pick a great work/life balance and peace of mind to a high salary any day.1 -
I dont. I am a struggling junior whos back at mobile dev after 2 years of a break while working on that 2 for 2 years prior. I dont know. I get addicted to problem solving and also some unresolved childhood traumas are driving me to tryhard and sacrifice personal life in order to perform better in my job. I am afraid of failure so I will sacrifice everything whaf I can to be better.3

If you’re a developer who seek professional growth, there is no better way than learning other languages, even if nobody really uses them.
Pick a language and spend a weekend reading tutorials and most importantly writing code in it, something like game of life, sudoku solver or todo-list app.
The more alien the language feels the better. Try Clojure, OCaml, Smalltalk, Prolog, Erlang, and also weird esoteric languages like Piet.
Writing code that operates on alien concepts you see there is the quickest way of learning that concepts and reusing them in whatever language you’re making money with. Your professional growth will be immense.23 -
Babel and webpack kicked my ass today. fuck you babel, and fuck u too webpack. neither one of u fucks is making my life any better at the moment. things were moving along, now my app just looks like this. something in this transpile garbage. I'm not missing '>' . it's just not transpiling correctly I think.8
-
I'm making a devRant API wrapper for Dart. The point? None! Just to get better at the language and mostly make my own life easier. Open source or not, seems like I'll be the only one to use it. Or am I? Is anyone else (I know ewpratten is) using Dartlang?7
-
Fucking hell it pisses me off when you go to so much trouble to streamline processes, set up systems that improve workflow and solve issues, find better solutions and show how they make life easier... and people are like "yeah nah let's just do things the same old shitty way we've always done things".
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻5 -
Graduating from school, To find out that there are much (much) better coders, programmers etc. Out there. Made life all the more interesting.

My decision whether to move to the US vs. the UK/EU will be primarily be driven by ability to attend rock/metal concerts and access to art/travel/culture/diversity.
If I am happy and living a stress free life (stress free == balancing stress with doing something that I love), then I'd be able to perform better with a clear mind and grow well.
Money has always been an output of my working with good ethics and high values.28 -
Wow, I would have to write a book to describe all of the positive ways coding and a long career in technology have impacted my life.
In short, it has provided me with a great life, career, passion and so many friends I can 'talk shop' with.
A great journey from punch cards to PC's to LAN's to a global network. From 8" platters to 10mb Bernoulli boxes to 5 1/4 to 3 1/2 to terabytes in your pocket!
From Brick size 'mobile' phones and 35 lb Compaq and Osborne 1 'laptops' (I know some of you remember those) to today's amazing miniaturization.
From MS DOS and Dr. DOS to lots of OS's. I had better stop as it seems I am writing a book in a rant 😀
Best of all... my son went into the family business and now we 'talk shop'!
It has been an amazing ride!1 -
So, you all may remember my rant about my visual impairment. This dude applied the UNIX philosophy to glasses: They do one thing, and one thing well. He actually calls them "task-specific glasses" but come on now, that's the OG UNIX concept!
No, I will not have to have surgery - supposedly. The glasses he builds are ~$25,000. He said that when we go over spring break, he'll determine if we can go from 98% to 100% positive. If this can be pulled off, my life could be forever changed, for the better, hopefully...3 -
Work so hard that you're too mentally exhausted to even think about how your life could be better or more enjoyable.2

I have a random question:
What values do you guys live with?
And how can I make sure I live my life with highest possible values?
The squad here is most raw and honest. I have seen you folks stick to what you believe in and stand up against the evil even if costs you or makes you sacrifice somethings.
Really want to be a better human and seems like my next phase of life would be dedicated to this.20 -
Wrote my first story. Put my whole soul into it. Sent it off to be reviewed for publishing. Got a "nope" without even one word why or on how to make it better. My life is a failure.5

As a designer, I don’t really like material design.. but I’m dabbling with vuetify and i must say, it’s dope. And is making my life better3

So this stupid fuck whose react code is a clusterfuck of bugs just bashed me when I said Java is better then node because of reasons...
I was literally speechless while thinking if I should humiliate her or not.
Guess life will show her because I don't give a fuck. -
When I started uni and I took my first programming subject (Data Structures) I hated it as much as I could. My teacher was a complete @$$hole, he wasn't good at teaching, and most people were failing the subject. When I finished that semester I swore I would never be a programmer...
11 years later and I have a Master's in IT and have been working as a Software Engineer for 6+ years. #life
I wish I had a better experience learning the basics1 -
It is chilling to think that if earth is knocked out of its orbit and all surface life is frozen to death, earth’s own heat is enough to sustain deep ocean life for millions of years. They won’t care if we die — they never knew we existed at all.
When I realized that a non-anthropocentric worldview was a possibility, at least momentarily, my life changed for the better, and I don’t want to go back.6 -
Regarding my previous rant where I shit talked about ubuntu 17.10
So instead of downgrading I tried a last chance (why not, system was fucked already) by installing unity, yes the same shit that ubuntu team removed from ubuntu 17.10 as major upgrade.
Well, it turns out gnome shell was taking more than half of my cpu in idle state and this unity barely reaches above 10%
Life lesson learnt: not every upgrade is better
Same goes for android studio, let's save it for another rant10 -
Having a harsh life but being strong inside is better than having an easy life but no strength to fight.1

Stupid fuck shit. I am living in a tiny apartment right now but have a better paying job to afford a better apartment where my fucking workspace is not in my tiny bedroom. I really need and wish for a dedicated workspace now because office is pandemicwise closed since a year, but guess what my hometown is having a housing boom and constant influx of rich young professionals or newly weds with lots of cash from them or their parenrs/family. And everybody is buyigh up apartments like crazy. If u want to have a good apartment now u already need to settle for life with a high mortgage or pay half of your salary away for rent. Unfortunately the pay does not accomodate for that but is on the level of 10years ago. Aaand as a single iam fucked royally from taxes and everybody else. Fyi: hometown berlin and Hamburg germany.5

So if anyone is interested or has read or listened to The 48 laws of power....
https://youtu.be/pSWIVupPAKI
I'm 40 minutes in and at first I was in denial...
"No people are better than this now, we can transcend this kind of behavior and thinking, I don't need to act this way and follow the lessons in this book"
And now that I'm through a couple laws and I apply it to my marriage, friendships, my job, etc. I'm like SHIT this really is human nature isn't it....damn it.
I really need to start applying this book to how I approach life lol3 -
I just want a better life. A life where people can live freely. Where skill and talent is enough to make a living. A life where we don't have to be scared of the police.2

Happy New year
May you have a year that is filled with love and bugs, laughter and debugging , brightness and dark theme , hope and distro hopping and little less windows vs linux shit 😂 please arch guys you too 🙄😝
Wish you all a great year 😅😛
I rarely post anything but I'm pretty active reading every shit post here. we fucking have a great community here. Few people are going through some real shit , hey you, things will get better don't lose hope but don't just wait on it , things don't ever get better by just wishing. Do what has to be done no matter how hard that decision can be.
Cut all those toxic people from your life doesn't matter who they're. You all deserve better
Believe in yourself. Everyone is going through some real shit. Keep fighting. Live for yourself.
You got only one life live upto your fill potential.
Regret is the worst thing so do whatever the fuck you want to do.
Never give up doesn't matter what you're going through.
And in the end may you "live" all the days of your life. -
One minute my life seems to be getting better. The next it feels like it will just always get worse. Not being reliably employed is something I’ve always feared and made an effort to have contingencies for. But I’m out of contingencies and beginning to have to start all over again with something completely different due to my apparent cognitive decline. It’s a huge pile of anxiety and is creating upheaval in all my relationships with people. I don’t know how much more of this I can handle.1

Am considering quitting college and learning online. It's much better for me personally. I have learned more via Internet in a week than what I did from college in years. I am from India. Most of what they teach is pretty much useless & outdated and the teachers seem to think of technology as a static thing. I don't know if I can ever convince my parents to let me quit. What they think is college = job = good life. Thanks for letting me post here. Had to let it out.20

My biggest dream is moving to Europe. Obviously a rich, westernized country.
I have Bipolar type I (the most severe one), ADHD & Autism combo. Initially, getting diagnosed with bipolar and getting treatment was LIFE-CHANGING. I cannot overstate this. We're talking body weight, relationships, job, position, salary, life insights, political orientation, personal projects and their success.
I live in a very small, relatively poor Eastern country now. I fled Russia for it. The medications I need aren't available here. More than that, some of them are illegal, so importing them is out of question.
Getting the meds I need will definitely change my entire life. It will change everything. I will also be able to start my gender transition without the risk of being beaten up on the street. The only thing I need is some kind of visa.
If comparisons make you feel better, and you live in a rich western country, just remember that there are people that will do anything to get to a similar position as you.1 -
As an Android user I constantly think I coulda got a better cheaper phone.
Such is life **typed from my Moto G**3 -
I was asked to revisit some code yesterday - code that I had written at a much better time in my life. I was productive, I was on top of my project and we were delivering value to the organization.
I'm at a point now where I haven't written any code for months. I've been documenting and designing and arguing with teammates over inane shit. It's been an absolute slog, and I've started looking at what it would take for me to actually quit since I've got a kid on the way, and I've been bringing the stress and anxiety home from work. I've got so much money in options and salary, it's basically impossible for me to leave for better work.
I'd consider this the lowest point in my professional career. Four years of college - where I beat alcoholism and depression (mostly) only to end up at a place that I fucking hate, but cannot leave. It's affecting my family. I've drank more in the past 6 months than I have in my entire life.
And now I have to start repurposing old code to work on a new project that is fucked up 5 ways from Sunday. I honestly don't know how much further I can stretch my professional ethics to keep this shitload of cash flowing into my savings.3 -
A combination of life literally pushing me in this direction and my own interest in everything that is smart or complex.
But, I hope it serves as a stepping stone for me to achieve better things than being "just a programmer/dev" -
A tech as well as a life question (actually more of a useless sleepless thought) : What do you think is more important? Exposing yourself to multiple technologies, career paths and life experiences or diving deep into a single technology, career path and life experience?
I feel like being an expert in 1 tech might pay off in terms of job life , and it would be bad for a person who is constantly switching between career paths, but sometimes i feel like i should have tried other paths too. Not just the life of a techie, like people who are deep into media and journalism, accountancy or those film industry jobs ; politics or finances , etc.
Its like, we found an apple to be a tasty fruit and now we have to be the apple guy forever. The better i am in being the apple guy, the more i will have to eat apples and the more i will earn. Why can't i try pears or oranges?7 -
Hello, today was my First day, internship at Microsoft innovation center BE, a great day with amazing people, my project is called tech Office, we need to process data from sensors in the office, create and use Microsoft AI to optimize and help the office become smarter and more efficient. Make the life better and the environment more productive. I don't really know where to start but I'm happy to be given such an opportunity and will do everything to make this work !

If soundcloud would have a reverse search feature, my life would be much less of a pain.
Also, if soundcloud could return better results than Google:"songName" + soundcloud -
It drives me nuts when people compare iPhones to Samsung, not realizing that Samsung did not invent Android, nor are they the only phone manufacturer or Android OS distributor.
If you're comparing iOS to Android, that's one thing. Or if you are comparing iPhone's hardware to a specific Samsung phone's hardware, I get it. Heck, I'm cool if you compare the iPhone X to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, because they're similar in price. But don't say that Apple is better than Samsung when you mean you have an issue with Android, or your battery life on your $300 Android device wasn't as good as your $700 iPhone. Apples to oranges guys! It's like comparing Visual Studio 2015 to Python.
I don't care who is right or which is better. At least know what you're comparing!
Thanks.2 -
When I quit my job making multiple bullshit excuses of how tired I am and how much better my life would be if I work from home and here I am been lazy for 2 - 3 months and didn't learn anything new also didn't practice what I know.
Honestly I'm so disappointed in myself and the fact that it was a good opportunity for me makes it harder on me blaming myself. -
If you feel like your love life sucks, to make yourself feel better, think of how many times the core has ever been dumped.3

Buy some colored pens. The more colors the better.
I did it out of curiosity. Ended up being a life saver when taking notes and planning work on paper. It probably cut my work in half. I spend more time writing stuff on paper and planning stuff, but when I do write 10 lines of code, they turn out to be pure gems fitting perfectly in the entire structure. I write them with tons of confidence, knowing that I had thought of everything and I didn't forget anything, because everything is right there, in color, on the diagrams that I drew.2 -
You ever just get constantly shit on by life, work, and everything for weeks and then, one day, it finally just turns around for the better. After that, you finally feel normal again. Probably all the Christmas cookies I’ve been eating… In the words of forest gump, “I’m so happy I could bust!”9

Fuck HttpClient
Once upon a time there was WebClient and WebRequest, everything was simple and life back then was just 3 lines of code. But Microsoft came and decided to ruin everything with HttpClient. WHY IS HTTPCLIENT AN ASS TO DISPOSE? why cant you just close the connection and not fucking leave us with a TIME_WAIT. oh yes it doesn't support ftp and you'll recommend us to use a third party lib? fuck it if you want us to move to something better don't leave us with a half-assed HttpClient. but what about if you have 1000 proxies? oh boy I do love to initialize 1000 HttpClients with different HttpClientHandlers, want only to use HttpClient each request? goodluck filling your ports with TIME_WAIT seriously microsoft3 -
Risk is part of my everyday life.
I take the risk everyday when opening IDE and changing line of code that can either break database or crash other systems that are depending on one I am developing. ( not instantly but in some time in the future )
So....
Many years ago I was updating some application server production code while being drunk.
Everything went fine except me waking up in the morning and didn’t remember how I did it.
... what I learned from my developers life except that heavy drinking and updating servers is not the best idea ?
First, don’t give a fuck, do your job and ask questions even if the person in front of you said that understood everything and you think you understood all of shit.
Second, if you think you know what to do think twice.
Third, having any backup, any tests and any documentation is always better then having nothing.
And the most important.
The most risky in every business are people around you, so always have good people around and there would be no risk at all or you won’t even think about it.

Im a student programmer pretending to know his shit and earlier today I was coding javascript and man I thought I know that language already. Turns out I dont know shit and it had me searching how tos on google. Bless that search engine though for giving me results I didnt even know that I need. Lesson of the day, just continue pretending shit cause ya gotta live life.
PS sorry for those passionate about programming, I am not worthy.
PPS I actually believe I can do better I am just a lazy ass piece of shit who's still contemplating whether I should be really all doing this shit
PPSS I need motivation help9 -
Hey hey hey, stupid poll time! Yay!
Okay it's only the second one but let me dream
If you had one of each thing that makes your dev life what it is, which one would you pick?
Let me explain a bit: I mean IDE, drinks, language, coworker, project... If you had to keep ONE think in each "category" of your job, what would they be?
-----
Mine would be:
JavaScript (I know some others are better, it's just my most fluent one), Atom IDE, Orangina (drink, for the ones not knowing) and my most powerful laptop out of the two. Those would be the things I'd keep if I had to.
-----
Please don't bash me on my crappy question, I'm just wondering >.<8 -

I am a junior developer, two weeks ago I got a job for the first time in my life as a fullstack web developer, I have felt bad for the times that "I should have read the code better before coding", I think I am distracted and impatient. I make mistakes because I don't know how the system works in some parts and I write repeated or unnecessary code, my boss has corrected me, but I feel very stupid and I'm afraid of being fired. Is it normal to feel like this?2

Every time somone who i have nearly forgott about calls me. I know im gonne get a stupid IT or Tech question...
- Why is my internet slow?
- Can you make a better {xyz}.... for free?
- How can i make my computer faster
- Why does office/spotify/chrome crash?
- Can you teache me programming so i can get rich?
FUCK THEM!
Really, i've got more relevant stuff to do. If you wouldnt have killed all your braincells with smoking and drinking and did something with your life you wouldnt have to ask such stupid questions in the first place. And thanks for never contacting me in the past X years! -
should I get a rubber duck to tell my life problems to? or are friends a better alternative to talk to? any experience? 😁5

My last commit:
git commit -m "This better f*ing work or I will make everyone's life a living hell tomorrow morning... btw, I fixed the ie 10 display bug." -
My dream project is to revamp education, be it through an app of some sort or by any other mean.
Can't justify spending a quarter of your life in a place you usually don't want to be, listening to stuff you can't relate, being taught by people who wasn't born to teach and being tested for things you will never use and couldn't care less.
Come on, there has to be a better way! And this goes beyond online courses.1 -
I had two mentors that changed my life.
The first one I worked with him for 1 year and half. He made me a better programmer, and increased my knowledge in backend.
The second one I was only able to learn from him for about 3 months, but he expand my knowledge and I was able to learn new languages.
Now I am on my own, but would be happy to work for them again! -

- hey, we have a lot of code smell and data is structured usually in a chaotic way, also its hard to understand what is going on with all these code duplications, maybe we can think about refactoring, better structure, maybe even we can extract some domains and make life less painful?
- what is domain?
- *facepalm*4 -
I don’t really regret anything because I’m extremely happy with my current situation, but maybe I should’ve gone for a CS degree to make my life a bit easier. But who knows if it would’ve made things better or worse, I’ll never know.
-
Ok so I haven't been on here in the past few days. Had a few things happen that I'd rather not talk about right now.
What I can say is that I'm feeling a lot better now. At this point I wake up feeling like shit but after a few minutes I'm good. But with the sickness going away, so has my happiness for the past week. As I've been feeling better physically, I've been feeling worse mentally. Life is just a fucking nightmare.
Also on a side note, I found out maybe 20 minutes ago that my friend is going to his uncle's wedding, and the bride's father is the president of the Latin American branch of Microsoft. We've been calling him Latin Bill.
Anyways everyone, happy Thanksgiving. Hope everyone has a great day -
Don’t let anyone tell you what to do in your life. Be whatever you want to be.
...if you do decide to be a coder, remember no language is better than the other. No language is perfect. You’ll never be a perfect coder. You’ll always need to search for basic things.
If at any point of time you disagree with any of this, you’re on the wrong path.2 -
I have a dream of founding a community where students can learn basic of programming for free. Developers will contribute their time and teach students over online and offline based on the sole purpose of giving back to society. Anyone Interested !!! Let's built this community together :) The community will focus on helping poor people from developing nations to live a better life.13

I just learned the existence of Laravel. It made my life 1000 times better. I will just abandon the normal PHP coding workflow, I will juet use Laravel now. I love it.5

Any devs here from Canada or who have worked there?... know any?
I'm strongly considering immigrating to Canada to give my future family a better chance at life (My current country has a highly unstable political climate).
Just wondering how the dev lifestyle is living there (for the average dev) i.e.
- Quality of life - I know I can't buy a house, but what can I rent? A house/ flat/ box?
- Hows the dev scene / culture?
- Work life balance / Work environment frustrations (I hear they are very politically correct and this may be a conflict with my blunt nature)
- Income Tax vs Government service delivery, I expect tax will be high due to free health care/ education but are they worth it? nb; any service delivery beats what I get...
Any feedback is welcome and will be appreciated.16 -
2GB of RAM on my iPhone makes things run smoother than 6GB on my Android.... I used to think more is better... My whole life was a lie8
-
Yesterday I wasted 2 hours because a bug in EF Core (https://devrant.com/rants/2323794/...)
Today I wasted another 2 hours because of a bug in Android Studio 3.5.2, which had a report only available in AS 3.6-alpha channel.
Dev life is wonderful huh?
https://issuetracker.google.com/iss... -
Ooooh man, I wanted to tell this to someone but never got the chance.
If I could choose, I would get the ability to comprehend something just from seeing it one only time and never forget about it for the rest of my life. Instant learning anything and never forgetting? I can't think in something better than that.1 -
I just been feeling really burned out recently to the point I just feel things are just meaningless. I feel unappreciated at work or by people in my life. I appreciate myself but the pandemic is really getting to me. I had to take a break from studying at times when I couldn't focus or got too out of touch. I'm usually better than this.
I tried reaching out as I continue to put up with my current consulting position, study and job searching when I'm not too burned out. I just feel alone in this. Can anyone relate?3 -
Nothing better than finally stepping in and turning your life around just to have this one dream that kicks you right where it hurts
Not a sad dream where when you wake up you can be sure that it was indeed just a dream. I mean one of those crystal clear dreams where you behave just like you would in real life, being in exactly that situation that you worry about and then having to watch yourself failing at being a normal human being
Thanks brain. I didn't want to get over it anyways -
When interviewing people still ask me if I work with Eclipse. I'm Android dev, why should I ever work with that piece of sh*t of an non-IDE?
Please just don't ask for Eclipse. No sane androider uses it. I don't like to waste my life using the worst software ever made. I would even say that no one should be using it. NetBeans is better, IntelliJ is best.2 -
They should have made a song "but first let me take a backup", instead of selfie. This would have made the world a better place and a better life for many people like me :(
10 hours and counting rebuilding a database using liquibase stubs... Brrr... No selfie today -
Haven’t been active on devRant in a few months, spread across different platforms and university work. Just finished a class working on a portfolio piece and that took a lot out of me combined with several life events in consecutive weeks. Just doing the bare minimum homework and had my nose stuck in video games the past couple weeks since finishing that portfolio class. Feeling a lot better going into this new week though and ready to get back to working on another portfolio piece while learning some advanced NodeJS and MVC architecture.

! Not a rant about Linux being better than Windows.
I used to ignorantly think that but experience and awesome community's like this have taught me better.
At a previous job I worked with Linux for ages and git used to how streamlined it is when working with a console. I then moved to Windows (to make games I'm Unity3D, which was awesome!) and found myself pining for a decent console. I finally found ConEmu which has a multi tab feature!
Just wanted to share this, knowing it made my life way more fun!6 -
I graduated college with double degrees in literature and marketing management. Web and software development and design was a hobby that became my way of life and eventual career path. I guess it's more of a challenge than a hurdle, not having a formal IT education as a foundation, but I'm happy to have learned a lot from my colleagues over the years to better myself as a dev in practice, if not in academics.4
-
Solo client developers are a fucking nightmare to deal with - especially the lil pretentious patronizing douchebags who talk shit about you and act like they are a better programmer than you to their whole company to make themselves look better and to break up relationships. I wish I had your address so I could ruin your life you stupid waste of space cuntface McGee.3

Is it better to be in the middle? Not being poor but not rich either. I believe that fighting for things in life is more rewarding.3

How are you going to make your life better this weekend?
Previous Week : https://devrant.com/rants/86391819 -
Anyone considered substance use to make you a better programmer? Personally I struggle with concentration for more than 6 hours a stretch and I just started vaping with no nicotine but I just read this and maybe it's what I need?
https://selfhacked.com/blog/...
I don't drink or do drugs but life is so competitive I think maybe I need an edge against prescription adderall programmers rising in the ranks....4 -
TFW you get to work and your colleague is like : "Hey boyo you got bugS to fix on that code we pushed into production"
As I was just having a better outlook on my life -
Now I have a problem
Do I stick them now or I do it on the laptop I'll buy next month?
I want to stick them and show the world this magnificent app!!
Thanks dfox & trogus!
You made my life better3 -
Well, they were pretty glad I came up with a better plan than acting (I was not that good at it) and the stars aligned for the dev life. The fact that two of my cousins are extremely successful devs probably helped1
-
so, this is gonna be a little long question regarding life as a programmer . hope you can bear me.
so, the situation where i am is that i spend all my day in laptop cause i want to change the world and make better living for the poor by the support i can give to them using my knowledge. but eventually nothing is happening that way. my parents and siblings complaint that i spend all my day in front of the screen coding apps and doing some kind of programming. but the fact is that nothing is coming out of that . sometimes i feel depressed about it and it's kind of like i start hating YouTubers and promotional spammers who show how you can change life and earn billions with just your hello world apps. i had an app on play store which was doing decent but this year my publisher account (developer account) got terminated because i breaked some policies about whom i didn't knew exist.for now i just want to earn enough money and wanna help out people in my twenties.2 -
I uploaded my resume video on my channel where I gave out information about everything in my life (almost), thinking that devRant trolls would do their research on me and come up with better insults than before.
Such disappointment. Sigh. You can't have everything can you.1 -
I enjoy reading the arcane language of devs, although I haven't a fucking clue what you're talking about. It's the instinctive rise and fall of emotion that I find gripping.
There's one thing I may be better at than most of you; since 1967's first episode of "Time Tunnel," I have been enamoured of RMS Titanic. So, two things. Today is the birthday of Jack Phillips, the senior wireless operator who lost his life the night of the sinking. There's a memorial garden in his birthplace, Godalming, Surrey, UK. The second is my recent immersion in enhancing images. I'm attaching a work in progress of RMS Titanic sailing past the Isle of Wight on her maiden voyage. Stay dry lol.4 -
Sometimes, I feel like this profession is a piece of shit. There's more to life than all these stresses. There's gotta be a better way to make more money, I just need more perseverance.rant i love programming sometimes fuck programming i love this job sometimes i hate this job sometimes1

I have a question about the life as a developer in a big, open office. I'm a relatively active thinker and have to walk around, draw on whiteboards, etc. to get a better outlook on my problem.
What do I do in a big office with mutliple people? I can't just stand up and walk around or write/draw on a whiteboard all the time.
Has anyone experienced the same and knows what to do? I'd like to prepare for a life in the office.2 -
I have my IntelliJ builds set up to make either a pleasant ding or an unpleasant gong sound when my build succeeds or fails respectively (it's a multi-minute build, so it helps when I'm off doing other things while waiting on it). I think I'm going to spend all day tomorrow trying to get Nandor from "What We Do In The Shadows" saying something like "Hooray!" and "It is broken" for success and failure. I'll have to re-watch all the episodes so far, but I'll pay that price gladly. I feel like that would make my life immeasurably better and will be well worth my time to my company, right?1

Need Advice:
My whole life, I have been a sole developer. Most of my project was a single person. I was responsible for the frontend, background, server deployment, and everything else. I liked doing the thing my way.
After working like this for a decade, recently, my company hired a second developer to help me (So I can do the management of other projects.)
The biggest challenged that I am facing right now is the difference between my thinking of a problem or the way to solve problems compared to the other guy.
There are many things that he and I do differently.
I need some advice on how to work in teams. I how to manage things better. -
!rant
I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but lately I've lost that "love" for code, not coding itself, but the code in projects.
Because most of the time the projects are inherited, there is never enough time, It's always a priority. And let's be honest, most of the time programmers don't like others code. (Is it God Complex?).
What I do notice with this "new" philosophy it is that I do not stress when I do not like some development, I ask the "bosses" if there is time to change it or if we continue with how it is. I learn that it should be done better and I continue my life5 -
Know that feeling when you break out of a really deep relationship, end up with someone else who's prettier and better in many ways than your ex yet still, during those intimate moments, you can't help but think about your ex and how good life was with them?
My previous laptop even though it had the same processor, lesser RAM, was less prettier and the SSD being the only upgrade to my new one, somehow worked faster, smoother and felt a lot better. :( -
I am feeling low in my life. It's like everything i am doing feels worthless, like there is no point in it. There is always someone better than me in this.
How can i surpass my limits.? Anybody5 -
Fucking vagrant is supposed to streamline the fucking process and make everyone’s life easier, not ruin it with a shitload of bugs. Every fucking time!!! I’ll be better off using a USB, transferring the OS setup files at 2.0 speeds files, shoving it far up my rectum, shitting it the fuck out, and having the pipes transfer it over to you in the two fucking hours it’s taking me to fucking debug this clusterfuck.
-
Some programmer or QA person somewhere in the world is having a moment of great reflection on the subject of thoroughly testing their code. If not that, then on the subject of a super crappy manager who knew better and pushed to production anyway.
“Then in September this year, nearly three years later, he got a letter from Wells Fargo. "Dear Jose Aguilar," it read, "We made a mistake… we're sorry." It said the decision on his loan modification was based "on a faulty calculation" and his loan "should have been" approved.
"It's just like, 'Are you serious? Are you kidding me?' Like they destroyed my kids' life and my life, and now you want me to – 'We're sorry?'"

So, I'm really really impressed with London. This place has an amazing history, culture, and the people are great. After visiting Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin and now London, I love London the most.
I've never tried to get a visa and my American friends tell me it's hard. Well fuck you I don't care if it's hard. All the better if it gives me a goal in life.
I leave at the end of the week but I swear I'm going to get back here next year. Don't care how hard it is.
Also I saw Alan Turing's Bomb. Pictures below.3 -
Want your opinions on this one.
I am currently experiencing a slowdown in my career progression...trying to study for the RHCSA exam and I had interviews for two new positions in my current company, first job I reached the final interview but they went forth with another candidate.
For the second job they have not yet responded.
Anyways I was thinking of trying to complete my RHCSA since I already paid for the exam and then study for masters degree abroad and try to immigrate to a country with a better quality of life, thoughts?3 -
so I have both PyCharm and VScode running for the same project. It’s React Redux Django so my servers and stuff are running through pycharm while i edit and code on VS cause PyCharm is crap for react and javascript.
But VS cant seem to run my crap without additional steps which PyCharm does for you automatically like the virtual env
Is there a better way to do this or is this my life now?4 -
I have never felt better after my break-up, I think today is the day I can say I have moved on and the only thing that saved me was programming. Working on a big project and dedicating most of the time working hard. Every time I solved a bug or added a feature I felt better, felt proud of myself. My self-esteem has improved drastically. And continuously winning in 3 big hackathon events acted as a cherry on top. Now when I look back at the old version of me I find how funny it was, all that drama and mood swings. If I could go back in time I would tell myself just one thing - "Do programming like anything and become so good at it that you don't get time to give fucks to anyone else in life".
Moral of the story - "Love programming you will learn how to love yourself "2 -
Oneplus 5 suffers from battery drain with OOS 4.5.8.
Reverted to OOS 4.5.6, gaining better battery life, but a WiFi drain is still here and although I get through the day and more, it bugs me a lot.
Today I woke up thinking about updating to 4.5.8 again just because I'm an update maniac.
Gosh why can't I leave it alone?
(I have considered modding but for now I don't really want to go back on that road again because of laziness)1 -
hi guys, i need your opinions on my life's issue,
i'm a full-stack web developer from Iran, studying master's degree of software engineering here and my goal is to get application for one of europe's universities. this is a three years goal. during this 3 years i have to study hard, do some journal papers, do programming, get IELTS degree, then sign up for application.
all this hardworks is for getting rid of my country, for bad economical problems, and having a better life at the end, start my own company, live my life to the fullest, grow my family and ... .
what's your advices? critics? ideas?3 -
I would end up on top of any other trend thing needed by humanity.
Possible outcomes:
- building better AI's, building better robots
- neural networking
- quantum computing
- robot dating service
- artificial life
- holodeck design and construction
- free energy (any kind)
- running a private space shipyard
- research into new and unknown technology
And last, if nothing works, I would open up a deli on Mars. The robots would make the food anyway, I would probably only program the menu and fix them when they malfunction. -
startups. enhanced version of something. not hating. but just. if you own one. please migrate the human resources too. just like the system.
you may have new human resources only if your startup is having/creating a unique system.
and please don't tell me yours are unique before you know the definition of unique itself.
effective development should leave minimum waste.
to who think that new system inside your head is better than real life system.1 -
People complaining about your life on DevRant. If your life is better than mine then you should not complain 😠🧂18

Ever get the feeling that your life is an episode of Friends?
That life presents you with opportunities and hope that your life might get better, and then everything turns out exactly the opposite of what you expected?
Fuck. -
I'm wanting to basically make a program or collection or scripts to automate all the boring parts of my life (cause I'm a lazy shit basically)
Any idea on what would be the best language to do this. I'm thinking python tbh. The end goal is going to be bills being payed ( I will out money manually into a PayPal account or something for this) and shopping being ordered to my house. Like I said I'm thinking python but wondering if there is anything better. I'm gonna end up having a computer or something set up just for theses scripts as will then extend into home automation or whatever I think looks fun. As the best way to learn is to try and making something fun2 -
Spent half a day working on some code to add some functionality. Ran into some binary assumptions and found workarounds. Got everything implemented and close to start testing things. Not a lot of code, but a lot of places that needed careful attention to detail. Started looking at the final code needed for initializing things. Found that all the code I wrote would not be needed if I just initialize some things differently. Realized I don't need all this code. The code is literally redundant.
git checkout <changed files>
Okay, now I understand the code better. I am ahead because I am not maintaining code I don't need. Half a day of reading the code helps me understand everything that is there.
Life is good. 😀 -
To work from home, I recently bought an internet connection at home. It has pretty good speed and is affordable for the base plan. The speed is around ~ 35 Mbps. Never had that fast internet in my life.
Now I have this sudden urge to buy a console and start gaming. That would require me to also buy a TV screen. So I'm now dealing with a temptation that would cost me atleast $500 in total.
This corona better stop soon...3 -
Does master degree really matter or if I take some courses will be better if I'll not go through academic life10
-
The little things are what makes you happy.
It was really annoying that screen doesn't work after an su. It makes sense, but typing "script /dev/null" everytime (and remember to write "exit" after it so bash history works again) is annoying.
So a little script to "/bin/scrn" with the following content made my life better:
#!/bin/sh
command="screen $@"
script /dev/null -c "$command"
Never worry about screen after su again! Tech life is great, isn't it?4 -
having the mind of a developer makes every part of life better - from drying off after showers to buttering toast.

We Introverts are going to look back to these days, Don't forget to make some memories...
... No one is asking to go out, Employers are offering work from home, to many of us it's the same old same old, in the mean time I wish y'all the best time...
to do amazing things, complete your pending projects, gist some funny/important stuff, read/write a little, organize you machine/room/life, take on some DIV projects, code better and automate the boring stuff (basically everything and anything)
I am planning to make my own version of our beloved Jarvis (just in case If I get my hands onto mind stone :p) -
When people use my life as a basis to judge that theirs is better, should I be proud of it, or feel sad about it 😅😅6

Week 1 Day 2
Today was an eye opener. Tried to make a simple class to model a fraction, and forgot pretty much everything. I realized it's been close to one and a half years since I did any serious programming. All I did today was spend a few hours going over all of the basics, and double/triple checking my OOP skills. Tomorrow I plan on familiarizing myself with Android studios and Android device basics. The day after I'll start the actual curriculum. Still feeling really good about all of this and hopefully it'll stay that way. -
Liferant. I feel annoyed If I compare my efforts to efforts of my "friends". I put 500% more in my self education, my career and professional life and I earn just a tiny bit more. I don't even know if I have friends anymore. We do not have a single thing common. While I want to develop, learn something, build something useful for people, they only want to drink, going out etc. Before we had some lan parties some game night but it was long ago. I lost any interest in travel and parties. I don't enjoy alcohol, I still consume it when I'm with them because there nothing else to do. I also become vegan about 2.5 years ago and those bbq`s are just pain in the ass. Plus I heard the sentence "show me your friends and I tell you your life" - uff.. I had never a single person who I knew personally and who has similar mindset like I do. Shall I start to look for friends? Even the thought feels kind of pathetic to me. I'm a freaking island in middle of the society who is trying to make it better but it's fighting against it with full force. I'm tired. I'm not suicidal and I still enjoy the life, but I'm crazy alone in what I like to do.2

I have dilema..
Should I go to a small software company that use latest angular + .net core and have tech lead..
OR
continue working in large non-it mnc department where I have autonomy to do things however I want see I fit.
I think going to software house is good. The payment is good, but maybe it will cost some of my life due to I have to be fullstack.
At the large non it mnc company is better I have to do front end using Angular and I have total control. No one point out what is my mistakes.
I am young 24 and not married yet3 -
Why do you want to become a better programmer? For money? Or to make life easier?
I was going through this article - https://medium.freecodecamp.com/the...5 -
I am working on partitioning my life and getting my tech stuff and online life organized. Partially fun, partially dread. Still one of the better things I'm dealing with right now.
Tech stuff mainly includes desktop PC (Qubes OS), network (to be driven by openwrt) and smartphone (already running Lineage OS, but I want to build my own LOS). This is the fun part. I want to add a NAS, but I'm too cheap for a proper one (at least for my >20TB media).
Furthermore offline stuff: Remove clutter, get analog documents properly organized (with a sustainable system) and possibly digitalized. I already have maybe half of the things I own in boxes each with a specific purpose (e.g. audio cables, network cables and game controllers each have their own box). Can be tiresome, but it's easy to see a progress and that makes it quite okay.
Online life: That's a big one. A large chunk is email and the hundreds of website accounts. I have them in a keepass file, but all running under the same address. Unfortunately I need to have a Facebook account for some purposes, but I'd like to start over with a new one. Not so easy when you have to transfer group admin privileges though, when I tried the last time I tripped some system and the new account was banned. Annoying. -
Irony
Even the black folks when faced with the problem.of wanting a better life for themselves apparently embraced the mindset of the fucking confederacy in a scenario where the untenable system or seemingly so of economics we embrace as a globe turned out not to work
They just tried to make more people like they were to keep themselves better off
Pig In a suit sort of deal1 -
I know that the company is a big factor, but in general, who gets better work-life balance? Front-end developers or Back-end developers?6
-
1. I don't have much of a social life.
2. I Sleep whenever I get time off It makes me feel better and think better.
3. I don't get in any kind of argument I prefer losing tho rather than ramming my head in senseless arguments.
4. Most important I take a break sometimes too.. helps me keeping my mind Positive. -
I'm in need of an opinion.
I'm in my final year at my university and have finished all my major subjects. Lately I have been having the feeling that I am under utilizing my ability and That I can do a lot more than what I'm doing in my life.
Just to put into perspective, I have one heck of a resume with senior job positions.
I've been considering leaving or taking a break from my university so that I can at least see where I am in life and to fully utilize my skills to see if I can build a better life than the one I'm currently. Honestly, I have no "Raggrets". I just feel like I can do better now and come back to uni to finish my degree in the coming years.
What would your take be? Would it be okay for me to quit? Since I have epic network and people know me by my skills, I don't believe finding a good job would be hard. And I already have a pretty decent job. I just don't know if I should take a break from university or not.4 -
So, so far for ending my life, I think it will be opening wrists. It seems the most non painfull way to go.
Better ideas ?5 -
OK, you sick fucks, tell me what WordPress plugin I should make next.
Rules: it needs to be a single-task kind of thing, because I want it done in less than a week and preferably under 200 loc because I have a life, so no gravity forms clones or ACF Better. Don't ask for me to do your homework either, asshole, so if you're suspiciously specific I'll set my dragons on you. Bonus points for weird and pointless.
I just released a plugin that accesses Fuck Off As A Service (www.foaas.com) through shortcodes, so hopefully that gives you an idea of the sort of attitude I approach this project with.
OK, go!15 -
-Make enough money to buy myself a laptop and a new phone to be able to work from my laptop and test on my phone.
-Be able to have better balance between my work, college and personal life.
-Do some useful open source projects (in swift) and put them on GitHub.
-Take care of my body and start working out.
-Work on my charity app idea and hopefully make big progress maybe even publish it. -
See this is the shit that drives me crazy
I remember implementing for example the voice synthesis trained model I found and it only kind of worked and there being a better way of determining what the expected model inputs were but I can’t remember
Life needs to move on
It’s well last time !
Where the he’ll can I go for life to move on so I can focus on something instead of being dragged around by my balls ???? -
so life continued past this point.
far past
and it was a lot better than it was in this fucked up state of affairs.
so when does that happen as it should ?1 -
you know supposedly the life of a hunter gatherer was easier on the human body than that of a farmer.
i could kind of see that in a way.
we're built to move around, i don't know about the being out in the sun all day part though.
anyway I was thinking. is this bs better or worse ? it would a be a terrible letdown to work as a warehouse guy the rest of my life and land is expensive right now and people are nuts.
the latter especially, however there are better ways of organizing society.
for example.
if i had to work in a backbreaking job for several years i'd want to shoot myself or a crap job that was sort of grimey.
but making those jobs as livable as possible and moving everyone through them on a schedule.
that is doable for most people.
but if you say work in construction for 40 years your knees back and face are bye bye.
there are better ways of conducting the day to day business of our cuntry.
