Get ready for the first ever devRant live stream event! @trogus and I will be making an exciting announcement/launch live on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/devrantapp) this Wednesday (October 4th) at 9pm EDT. After the announcement we will also take some questions from devRant users who are watching. The questions can be about the announcement or anything devRant-related in general. We hope to get some fun questions so feel free to ask anything you want.
We look forward to having some fun with our first live stream! If you can't make it, don't worry, the replay will be available on YouTube and we'll likely do some more streams in the future. Please let me know if you have any questions and we hope many of you can join us!
Edit: the stream will be available here once it begins tomorrow: https://youtube.com/watch/... I will also post another announcement rant when we go live!53 -
Project manager: I thought you said you made sure it was live today! I'm going to have to explain that you're the main issue with why it isn't live to management!
Me: have you cleared your cache?.... (long silence)
I swear it's the new "have you tried turning it off and then on again".2 -
Client: It works, it looks great! Thanks for everything!
Me: What? That isn't the new application, that's your old one. Your new one goes live tonight.3 -
watching CSI:
The cop (watching hacked tv broadcast): "This isn't live, is it?
The hacker girl: "I'll create GUI interface using Visual Basic, see if I can track the IP"
effin' gold, hope that GUI helped her11 -
"I'm just trying to replicate {ticket-1234} so I can write a quick hotfix."
- "Oh, it doesn't work on dev."
- "So... I have to test on stage?"
- "It doesn't work on stage either."
- "Uh, on prod?"
*office laughs*
We're doing it live folks.2 -
So I had to chroot into my system (I fucked up). Plugged in my backup arch live USB and then suddenly... What the actual fuck? I guess somebody borrowed my drive and used it for barbaric purposes13
-
This fucker has some balls (I'm being completely ignorant), the day his website goes live guess who is going to flood it with Dados attacks.27

Dev of other system : Oh hey, we're implementing a change to this part of the system, will it affect you at all?
Me: Sure, I'll check it out. When are you planning to go live?
Other Dev : Oh it went live yesterday...
🤬😭2 -
Anyone know what this is?
Is it a bomb? (lol)
It was in front of one of the apartments i live in.23 -
I wrote an app that tells me if a lottery ticket is winning. It takes a picture of the ticket, does OCR, finds the number lines and compares them with a remote json.

Currently I live in the city Utrecht. Right now a terrorist attack is happening next to my school with explosives and I'm at school right now.
Waiting it out now!16 -
Everyone keeps posting about Linux and living in 2037 but I don't get it. Why is Linux so great? How do you live with the incompatibility of your games??? Just casually rocking windows 10 living in 201751

Am I the only one who sees a post that begins with "Am I the only one..." and automatically downvotes?

So today I learned i can pay my property taxes online. The way you pay is:
1. Enter address (street #, I live in an apt)
2. It will show all matches **including the owners full name**
3. If you click view, it shows the full account history...6 -
In the span of a week, I:
* broke up with my girlfriend
* had to make a site go live for a client that wouldn't fucking cooperate and give me what I needed to get the fucking site live
* was given legacy code for a wordpress site that looked like what a fucking brainless monkey would type out by smashing its head repeatedly on the keyboard.
It can only get better from here, right?5 -
Does anyone else fantasize about giving up programming and go live in a jungle or doing other things that require more physical effort?
I've been learning carpentry, farming, DIY power generation etc. The goal is to be self-sufficient and go live in a fucking jungle someday. Or legally buy some cheap land far from the city and automate the shit out of it. No wait, I'll just live there as a normal farmer and write code if I feel nostalgic or something.
I think anyone other than me could have expressed that better.14 -
rant¡
Client: "Can you add some logos to the homepage?"
Me: "Sure, I've just added it, take a look at staging."
Client: "Great, we can move it to live"
** 5 days later after it being moved to live and telling them I'm going on holiday. **
Client: "EMERGENCY change logo now, we need to change x logo. These logos look crappy too. How did this happen?"
Fuck this. I'm not employed by you, you don't have any right to speak to me like that. Especially after working tirelessly for your company.
**sent email back explaining how to upload files**
Told them not to contact me unless it's technically related.3 -
While live streaming Google pixel launch, every time the guy on stage say Ok Google my phone triggered it 😁😁😁2

There is only one important rule to live by:
Never lend anyone your 256 GB USB-C/USB-B combo memory stick. There is a 100% scientifically-backed certainty that you will never, in your meager existence, see it again.11 -
That moment when the you actually think that this huge refactoring isn't worth it, but you do it anyway so you can live with yourself...
Code quality is love. Code quality is life.1 -
Fellow developers,
For all people asking u to be partners of their "billionaire" idea, and to be paid from revenue ONLY when the plateform goes live or shit like this, BEWARE.
For all of them i had the same answer: "ok, ill share with you the project, but until it goes live, i am the only one who is giving sacrifice, and since we are partners, i want us both to do same level of sacrifices in order to deserve later the share of revenue... That being said, u have to pay the hours of devlopment, all of them, and when it goes live, from the revenue ill get, ill pay you back what you paid on dev cost"
It is the only way to be really even...
And if he refuse, ask them again "why? I taought u where 100% sure that your idea will work and become a billionaire why u think it is risky tp pay few thousands????"
... Now he is having second thaughts12 -
Client: "We want you to build us a quick prototype / proof of concept. Don't make it too neat, we'll rebuild it before we go live."
Also client: "We already have a working version, why would we rebuild it?" -

I'm thinking about doing a live coding stream on twitch this saturday, late afternoon or evening (CET).
I've never done a live stream before.
Do you have any suggestions or interests?
I'm thinking about something like a small RESTful API with Angular4/TypeScript (frontend, single page application) and CraftCMS/PHP (backend) with somebasic theory about HTTP requests / response, redirecting, data transfer and interfaces et cetera...
The duration will be around 2-4 hours, maybe longer if I have enough Mate & Beer.
But it's all just an idea at the moment. 😉
I will create an empty project for the stream on my Github and push to it during streaming, so you can pull it live or later.17 -
I made it to 700 ++'s
I can finally have the energy drink AND the coffee on my desk.
Finally I can live up to my name.18 -
Boss came to me earlier
Boss: There's a critical issue with this release version for this project. Make sure it doesn't get deployed to our test/live environments!
Me: ...
Me: ...
Me: Err, that release went live 3 months ago... -
My place of work just put on the World Cup live stream. I'm not even a huge fan but it looks nicer than my current code, so I'll live in denial for a bit2

You know what's worse than hell?
Your non-technical boss thinking he knows coding.
In the middle of night you are going to fix the problem he created, because he messed it in live server.5 -
My coworker can't be bothered with learning git branching, so he comments out significant functionality during testing and then comments it back in before go-live. What could possibly go wrong?7

My favourite devTool is VS Code, especially since the last update. But considering that versioning should be more important than a specific IDE, Gitlab is THE tool. I couldn't live without it. <3

The first time i made my own electron app, and saw it working and displaying live data the exact way i wanted it to be doing it.
At the same time, it was the first time i felt like been a real dev in all meanings. -
I made a simple HTML site for watching Google I/O live without all the ads that third party websites try to stuff up your face. It also has the official countdown from the event website 👌 (The countdown will disappear as soon as it runs out)
Check it out at adless-io.firebaseapp.com3 -
I live in zurich switzerland one of the most expensive places to live. And i work as a jack of all trades graphic ux/ui designer/copy writer/marketeer in IT security.
I earn about $3800 a month, but every salery calculator says I should earn above $7000. With a median salery of $9300. But this seems so much money and I suffer from low self esteem. So what should I do? (Quitting is not an option because I like it there)11 -
Today I learned that there are people that disable javascript...
Quote: "It's both insecure and resource intensive"
Then he went that only if the script is free he would see what it is to run it.
He also said that he would never allow any js file that comes from google even jquery...
I wonder, how does a man like this live today when most of the websites are heavily dependant on javascript?
I wouldn't live in an isolated world just to be 100% secure, I want my good user experience xD11 -
Anti Rant: Is it just me or are Google Play app updates rolling out really fast... Like i have published some updates recently and they have been live in under 10 mins.

I just opened an Instagram live video for the first time. It was a video from Snoop Dogg and I thought...
“I can almost smell the chronic he is smoking on”
... then I remember I live in Vancouver BC and that smell is the 80 year old man and his wife smoking a joint at the crosswalk.
—> I like the place I live :) -
I've spent too much time online... I'm in a zoom meeting, I missed what someone said, reached to my keyboard to rewind then realised it was live... 🙈13

coding for your company and you know something doesn't work right.... sweet I'm done. I'll just fix that tomorrow.
coding for yourself and it works right but you still feel nervous about your users using it so it takes you an hour to build up the courage to push the changes live lol -
Marking your email as "High Priority" does not make it high priority. Nor will it get it attended to any faster. But keep believing it will, dear colleagues. Live happily in your little fantasy worlds.3

After being live multiple years supporting only Safari, Firefox, and Chrome, one customer wanted IE support. After taking a close look at the usage numbers, and discussing with us front-end devs, our product guy shot it down. Pop the champagne!2
-
Don't you just love it when a customer reports a bug in their live system and it's really urgent to correct it; then you go out of your way to fix it ASAP and deploy it to the staging system for them to verify. Three weeks later the customer has still not tested the bugfix...1

Meeting: Here is the brief. Its specific. Inplement it.
Me: It's done. Gone live.
Client: Can you just change the whole thing to be completely different to my original specific spec? It'll only take a minutes?

Google IO 2023: WE'LL SHOVE AI DOWN YOUR THROATS AND YOU'LL LOVE IT.
Fuckers even have live chat and comments disabled -.-
Never thought tech-events would get this boring, 5y ago it used to pump me up like nothing else could.8 -
Why is source code so crappy? May career is not the longest, buy in my 8 years I talked to so many developers and every one told me how important quality, standards, tests and architecture are - but every codebase I've seen is lacking all of it. Everything is running on constant live support.
I don't get it. It is like I live in a world where everyone does know what has to be done, but no-one does it. I suspect it is because people are lazy, lying and won't say no but that's also not a world I want to live in.24 -
Site scheduled to go live at 9:30. It's 9am and I've just been handed 3 hours worth of things to do on it. #FML2

There's the possibility that all of you just live inside my head, but it is also considerable that I exist in one of your mind.3

When they announce a new feature in a video that goes live today, but the feature isn't build yet. It isn't build yet because they never told the IT department that it should go live today. So now I'm stuck hotfixing it.1

Some devRanters here live in Ireland? Got to say I just tried Guinness for the first time and I love it!6 -
the excitement you feel finishing a project way ahead of deadline for them to still not push it live 5 months later bc of copy tweaking
-
Just wondering why most of you here hate php. I have multiple live projects using the Laravel framework, runs great and I love it!13

Priceless advice to all. Never agree to work on a project where graphic designers are overseeing it. You will be installing a scripty handwritten font the week before go live, changing out images but the ecommerce portion has not yet been implemented much less tested. I thought I would be implementing a typical Shopify site but no it is "story telling" they say. Oh yeah go live is 4 days away.5

My parents think everything i do on the computer is magic. Theyre too scared to toich any of my stuff because I convinced them it records live video and biometrics to my phone.
Sometimes life is good -
Always write your code like the person who will maintain it is an axe murderer who knows where you live.2

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
If you live in a major city and you stand on the slow fast side of the escalator (could be left or right based on location)...
then you deserve to be punched in the back of the neck.
No exceptions.3 -
when you're supposed to be pushing something live but you got the poops and need to run to the bathroom. then the client calls when you're sitting there on devrant halfway done with your business and you answer pretending you're pushing it live.2

>New feature works fine on dev
>New feature works fine on staging
>New feature doesn't work on live

Fuck me. 5 installation attempts later, still can't get arch to boot after removing the live usb. Do I have the wrong fucking kernel, cause it can't find it during boot now. Fucking hell, I just want this shit to run.30

Ubuntu (probably) fucked up some upgrade and I wasn't able to use lvfs anymore. (damned meltdown/spectre bug) so... I figured it'd be a "good" idea to reinstall dbus. well.. the alternative was reinstalling Ubuntu so I figured I could at least try. obviously it didn't work out.. at all.
sooo here's me thinking I'll just insert my live media and live on with my life. nope. the fucking live media is corrupt. so, here I am now, contemplating why I was such an idiot.2 -
projektaquarius's quotes to live by:

Client calls screaming they want to go live today.
And oh yeah they also want three morebpaymentbgatways integrated before that.
The documentation is scarce and we never used them before.
Got it on the table 4h before day ends.
Awesome!3 -
Surely this will be down voted, but whatever:
1. Don't

3. Live your childhood "normally" (this normality is totally subjective of course)3 -
Note to self, don't fix a minor bug that will not effect the demo right before the live demo. My program that was working great didn't work anymore during the demo because of my quick bug fix I figured I had a few minutes to add to my code.1

Finally got a new laptop at work!
The first thing to do: install linux in it so the beast could roar free.
Download mint iso, dd it into an usb drive, boot it up in uefi mode, .... /dev/sda read error: -110. Fuck, must be smth w/ secure-boot. Disable it, rinse and repeat. Same error. Wtf, could my drive be broken?
dd iso into another usb drive, boot live env -- read error. THE FUCK! It's wildly unlikely my both usb drives died on the same fucking day!
Go to it admin to ask for an usb drive. Iso->usb, boot -- live env is up. My my, look who's unfortunate today :)
cryptsetup, install, reboot et voila, the beast is finally roaring!6 -
I love this website https://dimden.dev/
It has a little live chat for others that are on the website, bridged to some discord.
It shows the mouse pointers of the other peoples that are on that website.
It has a cool retro aesthetic and it has 88x31 web badges.2 -

!rant, !dev, random thought
We live in the past. Everything we call the present has already happened, we just aren't immediately aware of it.
For example, if the sun suddenly exploded, we would live for ~8 mins thinking nothing had happened. On the human scale, this still holds although the delays are much smaller. (also, the sun isn't where it appears to be :D)
Our senses deceive us 😯
Open to criticism :) just thought it was an interesting thought.7 -
My hands started shaking today when I was about to resize a partition on a live, production hypervisor.
Who came up with the idea that the only way to *inflate* a partition was to fricking delete it and recreate it again?!
I know that as long as I keep its start at the same disk sector and only increase the partition size, not decrease it, its gonna be fine. Still. Deleting stuff on a live system makes me nervous.5 -
DevRant-Stats Site Update:
Future projections & Live General Section
Added some future projections like SocialBlade, where you can see your score in the future, according to the stats in the last 30 days. Therefore it will only be available after storing the stats for 30 days.
Also made the complete "General" section live now, and replaced "Live Score" with "Devrant++ Member since".
So now the values are updating every second! (Using EventStream so not working in Edge Browser lol idc)
Have fun!
Feedback is appreciated!23 -

Gotta love it when everything works flawlessly with the test API endpoint and credentials, but when I try to go live, there's suddenly a ton of additional configuration to get the third-party APIs working.
Why the fuck do you even provide a testing environment, if it's completely different from the live one?1 -
no one taught me how to host anything web, i had to figure out how to get things live by myself. it was awful, documentation on that stuff sucks, but i got through it knowing far more than when i started.5

So one of my employees pointed it local setup on the live database to test some weird behavior in an algorithm. Then he starte the next task and wiped his database to reload the fixtures. After that he realized, that he still had the live database credentials in his configuration file.1

I once accidentally deleted the live versions of my websites instead of the development versions (which I wanted to delete because I was going to start over from the live versions.) After several hours of digging through backup folders, I finally found the latest backup files, which were a few months old.
It took me a few hours to get the backed up versions to the same version they were when they were live. In all this, I have learned to keep the live and development versions of my sites in completely different locations.14 -

Site live for over 8 months, client contacts me saying a web form is not working. Check through code missing $ on a variable. Shit, it must never have worked. Checked through error logs and sure enough its been bust since it went live. I changed the variable to pull in their email address rather than mine when i pushed it live and missed off the $. Trying to think of a plausible and client friendly excuse.8

Thanks, AfterShip.com, for working flawlessly while the system I was building was in dev/test mode and for the first few days in live mode, then completely crapping the bed the first day I needed you to work with real tracking data with the live system. Someone once forced my team to make something live on a Friday, that wasn't ready and wasn't tested properly. I said no and had to go pick up the kids from school. Found out later they made one my team stay late to finish it and push it live, even though I told everyone to leave on time.
Lots of meetings the week after where I got told off for standing up for my principles. Eventually reached an agreement.
At least some common ground was found and changes were no longer pushed before the weekend. -

Am I the only one who doesn’t like live streaming.. everywhere online seems to want me to watch live streams..
Especially YouTube and Facebook.. I just don’t get it. When I wanna watch something on the web I want to be able to go forward and backwards and skip parts I don’t like...
So what’s the point of it? I genuinely do not understand it.13 -
BI guys ask us to avoid deploy on Fridays cause they don't have time to fix their stuff.
"We cannot test until it is live..." They said.
I hate guys who prefer production driven development.2 -
We came across a bug that only manifested itself in Edge if, and only if, the developer console was closed. Which we only discovered once it went live since during testing we always had the console open to monitor things... D:2

I need a new hobby. Programming doesn't excite me anymore, at least not how it did a couple of years back. I'd like to get into robotics and stuff, but everything's expensive where I live. I'd like to get into cars, also too expensive where I live. I like playing video games, but I suck at them and they bring me no feeling of having accomplished something. Sports? Suck at them too. I'd like to ski, but I live in South America. I just don't know what to do with my free time. Programming feels like a chore nowadays, but it's all I have.32

TIFU by running DELETE-INSERT on a live server and losing thousands of rows from a separate table. 🤤
TIL If you delete data from indexed table, it will affect any linked tables. I think. Fml. 🤕
At least it was a learning experience for all of us. Hopefully if I keep repeating it enough it will become true...3 -
Hey guys, I wouldn't really mind if you moved the live devrant podcast thing to a later time, I have school and I would kill or die to be there for it. Kill. Or. Die.9

Me: so we've added bunch of features to our app so that everything updates live automatically and you can edit it online and sort and filter and do bunch of other stuff.
Boss: great, how do I export it to xls? -

I think the linux live CDs with games on it, that my dad had compiled for me, were one of my first exposures to computers.
I remember how if you passed some specific argument, it would talk to you in a pretty sci-fi female voice too.2 -
So I was reverse proxying this new Social network app's API and saw an interesting endpoint
It was a websocket relaying what each live user's doing every 2.5s, to power the "xyz typing" under a post, or a simple online/idle.
The app's "live posts" ie most-recently created posts was also powered by it since they knew each user's state (instead of a periodic API call)
The performance is good even tho it's a new company + enough users
but now im curious how prevelant state-management is using such websockets .-.
if not taxing, i might move any API call which ive to ping every 15s or less to a live WS4 -

Someone called me and asked why wasn't Linux live USB working. I asked him to check whether safe boot was disabled from bios. His reply I can't find boot settings in windows settings.
This would not be a big thing if it was some non technical person. The person who called me was a CS student.
*claps*
I think he was trying to find a runnable file from the live USB. -
I WANT TO BE A TIME MILLIONAIRE AGAIN.

Happy New year
May you have a year that is filled with love and bugs, laughter and debugging , brightness and dark theme , hope and distro hopping and little less windows vs linux shit 😂 please arch guys you too 🙄😝
Wish you all a great year 😅😛
I rarely post anything but I'm pretty active reading every shit post here. we fucking have a great community here. Few people are going through some real shit , hey you, things will get better don't lose hope but don't just wait on it , things don't ever get better by just wishing. Do what has to be done no matter how hard that decision can be.
Cut all those toxic people from your life doesn't matter who they're. You all deserve better
Believe in yourself. Everyone is going through some real shit. Keep fighting. Live for yourself.
You got only one life live upto your fill potential.
Regret is the worst thing so do whatever the fuck you want to do.
Never give up doesn't matter what you're going through.
And in the end may you "live" all the days of your life. -
For crying out loud stop arguing how you are correct when your dev config was live and you took down 4 web servers. You fucked up and should admit it.

We don't want to live in our work.

One of my commits today:
“Corrected a file path for view as it’s causing issues within the live environment”
What I actually wanted to put:
“Changed letter to uppercase in file path for view because live is being a fucking bitch about it”
Why do my Dev and Live environments have to differ 😞, I kept my cool though, which is a first for me 🙂4 -

How dangerous am I?
I code it live.
I code while people are working on our website and make all the changes live. And if I notice an abrupt stop in responses to our logs I git stash my changes.5 -

Hey Guys!
@alexdovzhanyn and I just released the third episode of Runtimerror Live!

I am convinced that after this years-over-timeline millions-over-budget website goes live we will all be fired because it is dog shit.1

Pondering on what to call the act of copulation here on DevRant.
Feel free to add your suggestions!
My suggestion is "child class instantiation". One could on rare occasions call it "client server"...
I know, really childish of me, but I'm bored...4 -
I need to improve my C skills to become a kernel developer, so that I can do that full-time at some point. And since it would be 100% remote I could live wherever I want and wouldn't need to PAY STUPID AMOUNTS OF RENT JUST TO LIVE IN A """CITY"""1

Just started VueX ORM, absolutely brilliant plugin and don't think I could live without it now :D

This is a group sin.
We'd get the code checked and then run it straight to live. No test environments no real back up in place or process for releasing.
Just run code in if it broke run fix 1 through 3 until you got it right. That was two years ago. -
If, as a Dev, you have not heard of BAYOU, you need to research it, especially if you live in an area that can afford the initial investment. I think this AI technology will mature in less than a decade.
https://sciencedaily.com/releases/...
I don't think this will be limited to software development either, I think this type of AI will lend itself equally well to database development. We live in a technologically exciting, if somewhat unsettling world.5 -
Who else woke up at 6am to watch the Olympic live stream so to avoid ads during the primetime replay?

Hey guys
I'm trying to do something different from the usual and need your help.
I want to install linuxCNC in a pen drive (as in a live CD, but with the file system in the PEN which is usable)
I want to plug it into my mother's laptop, use it with my machines, then just unplug and it will run the native windows for my father.
How can I do this'?
I only find Live CDs, and I'm afraid of ruining my OS when If I try to install (afraid of installing on the SSD instead of the PEN).10 -
Some idiot fixing bugs in production and overwriting files without updating his git repo when I pushed another bugfix live.
Boss to me: "it's your job to get the fix live!"
I FUCKING HATE MONDAYS!
screw performance i'm gonna run gulp.watch in production and just git reset it to last release when someone fiddles with files on the server :( -
Hey guys!

First rant eva since stalking the feed for weeks:
When you do everything in Production and the Integration Analysts want it done in Staging and Int 2 days before go live.

Brackets because live feed even though it really messes up a lot, it's better than refreshing every 5 seconds!

I have the concept of making and selling NFGs to people. I suppose it would use some blockchain. Some initial NFGs I would like to sell:
- I don't give a fuck.
- Don't worry, be happy.
- Live and let live.
- Shit happens.
- Whatever...bitch.
I suppose some good memes could work as well. Not just slogans.
Please add to the NFG collection.1 -
Hey there,
Was your personal website completely finished when you decided to get it live? What did you include in it?
Sorry for the stupid questions.11 -

My client will not let me design a product before making it live.... "Make it live so I can see it, then I will fuck about with the design (pixel by pixel) and THEN I will work out what the product should actually do."
WTF?!
Oh and when I do insist on designing before building, they insist on me doing that in POWERPOINT..!!
Why am I still doing this fucking job?4 -
In Belgium were I live it takes twice as much time to devRant than in France or in the US. You know why?13

Today I've experimented the windows' blue screen of death...
My windows partition was f*ck up.
I tried many fixes, like boot from grub (which very complicated), boot from a usb with ubuntu live version and run boot-repair.
Bit finally I ended up, make a live usb of windows 10, (tried 6 times before finding the good way to do it with uefi bios) and reset windows without deleting my personnal files.
I'm pretty much proud of me right now.2 -
So i want to send DevRant an Email to for free stickers, i Live outside US and am confused by what they mean by
" make sure to format your address so it can be copied directly onto a label."
Please Help!6 -
Seventeen. I worked for 17 hours to pull off a POC of a feature no one thought was possible (at that time). It wasn't clean beautiful code, but hey, it worked! It's live now and I still smile when the feature is used.

Announcing to the group that the project is live, after publishing it is fun! It is like getting closure👀 from a project.
Although going live on a Friday is never a good idea. 😄1 -
The second episode of Runtimerror Live is officially LIVE! This weeks episode features and interview with our very own @dfox and @trogus! Anyone whos interested can check it out at https://runtimerror.com/podcast/... or on iTunes / other podcasting apps1

What are staging systems for?
In my opinion (and of my dev co-workers): that everyone can test the software before it’s being deployed to production.
PM (at least based on how they act): that we devs test our software. They will test it when it’s live.
Today: cookie banner was missing, and the page has been on staging for around 3 months and it already has been live for 2 weeks.
No. One. Noticed. That. On. Stage.
Ridiculous.4 -
Why did the computer go to the doctor? Was it feeling a bit poorly? No, it had a virus. It turns out even computers aren't immune to catching something nasty. I mean, can you imagine a world where even the machines are getting sick? Oh wait, we already live in that world - it's called Windows.4

To those working in the US as software engineers, is it worth it? Would you recommend it ? If not, why ? And did you live all your life in the US or are you coming from somewhere else ?2

When we went live with a site with millions of daily hits. It was the first project I lead and took 8 months of very hard work to finish.
Bonus: I felt even more badass when it didn't crash :p -
There is nothing worse than trying to program while having RSI, it’s either you have your wrist support on and type slowly and hit multiple keys, or you have it off, type slowly and live with the pain3

There is no story of tech support for my mom. Because I don’t live with my parents anymore, and my father is Head of IT where he works. So he does all the IT support at home 😂

I want to make software that people will want licences for. Or I want to make an open source project that people donate enough to that I can live off of it. Basically I want to live making software that I want to make. What a dream right?

Has anyone else had it where you get so used to saying 'no, this will never work in live as it is' that when it actually becomes pretty good, you struggle to say nice things about it?

I love development. Now my job does not allow me to do it anymore. I need a new job. Unfortunately there is no other job where I live. Someone looking for a mobile developer / c #? Italy or Europe. 😥1

Enabled a mysql optimization once, corrupted the whole live DB on a sunday while I was an hour away from the nearest internet connection.....
Luckily we had a live replication server so not much was lost (though uploading it over a 14mbit connection takes a long time for 30GB) -
I live in a world of wonder ... wonder how I did that? Wonder why it worked? Wonder if I can repeat that?
-
Does anybody teach mobile development live? For example as code is being written they are providing audible commentary that is also captioned that is also downloadable after session is closed. A cool feature would be to have a q and a live and it picks up the commentary and/or question from the audience too, I think I just thought of another sound mobile app idea!5

Google: "Your update is now live"
Me: "Excellent! Time to start working on that new feature. I guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure the new live update is working fine"
*uses new update*
*realises I have to fix something in the new live update* -
don't you just love it when you have to fix a system that consists on unnecessary junk code, horrible/lack of indentation, no documentation and the clients says "I don't know what happened fix it and I'll post you good"
I mean, I live for this shit man! -
Yesterday 14h work, today‘s day started earlier at 7am.
Live deployment is not going great.
WE SAID WE NEED TO TEST IT BEFORE GOING LIVE1 -
Working for a little SharePoint-Company while studying.
Have to hunt bugs.
Found a major bug which kills one of our customers SharePoint-Site completely because of code pasta.
Told my supervisor about the bug and reported it.
"yeh. we will fix it now"
2h later they started to go live.
"Did you fix the bug?"
"No. Wanted to have the system live asap."
On my way home I got a call.
"We need you back here in the office"
"Why?"
"It crashed. Is not reachable anymore. Help fixing it"
fuck off -
so I spent an entire day tracking a major memory leak (10mb/s!!!). when I find it, it turns out that It's in a deep part of C++ code that I'm not allowed to touch. now I live in fear of just crashong my 16gb machine every time I debug.

What are your easy things learned hard way ?
(It could be related to dev or anything else in live)6 -
Just spend the entire weekend preparing for, execution and cleaning up after a live stream.
When we'll, but holy shitfuck was it a stressful experience.
The guy in charge and with the vision pulled this one out of his ass, 12 hours before going live:
By the way, that system I talked about, where a moderator can pick comments from the YouTube chat, so that the hosts can look at the useful ones and choose to have them shown on the stream. Yeah, it doesn't work and you are better at programming than me, so you fix it.
Good bye sleep 😔 -
The best part of being a Dev is it teaches you to live your life the way you want.
You are a programming language and all the functions inside that language defines you. -

How much it is difficult to embed Live JS Editor in a website. Pretty easy right? specially when a lot of coding editor like code pen, jsbin etc are available. But all seems bullshit when it comes to show result in console or they are pretty much expensive.

Managed to apply Particle.js to my personal website today. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can make some pretty interesting effects. Recommend it to everybody.
Only problem is that Chrome doesn't seem to like this library very much. It doesn't start on Chrome unless your website is on a server (you can always use Live Server or something like that from your code editor). Or you can always try a different browser. It seems to be only a Chrome problem.
Can't wait to get my site live and hear what you guys think. Though, don't expect too much please.8 -
I stumbled apon this software called vavoo.to, whith this you can watch Movies, Series, Live TV and more just started to reverse the apk.
Now out of curiosity how the fuck are they doing this with Live TV without hosting it themselves.
They also sell legally their own Android TV boxes with the pirated content from Switzerland. Why can they do this without being fucked from behind??
I will find it out eventually but this is interesting to reverse. -
I got myself a Kindle last week and bought Randle Monroe's what if, thoroughly enjoying it . Saw someone recommending 'Algorithms to live by' here , I'll be reading that next . What books are you guys reading ?5
