Trying to install Ubuntu onto my newly acquired Asus T100.

It's hardly compatible with Linux but after tweaking around I did get it to boot with Ubuntu 16.04.

I feel like I'm in an abusive relationship with Ubuntu.

I love it but whenever I'm with it it screws up my environment and doesn't work when I need it to.

I go back to Windows reluctantly and get everything set up and stable. I'm happy, but not excited about it. And then, within a few months, I get that thought. Maybe if I put enough work in I can make Ubuntu work for me as my main environment.

I scored a GBA sp (with Super Mario Bros 3) at my local Goodwill today for $20. I always wanted one as a kid, but I almost didn't get it cause some asshole found it first. 5 years ago, my depression started while I went to a development / management school. Dropped off one year before graduation, but I prefered to stay alive than having this diploma in my coffin.

1 year ago, I got this (kind of shitty but it pays well but it has drupal so fuck) job and my depression ended.

In two weeks, I'll get back to school for this last one year that I'm missing, so I'll finally get a better diploma.

Within 4 years maximum, I'll leave France to start a new / better / better paid life in Canada.

2 things to rant.

1) Acer is giving a free 4GB RAM as gift which the shop didn't mention when I bought the laptop and extra RAM. So when I get it, I'll have an extra 4GB RAM.

2) I bought it on Tuesday. The shop said they will need to send the laptop to Acer service center for RAM upgrade and expect to get it on Wednesday. I called yesterday, it's still not done.

Let's see if I will get it today.

I spent a few hours making a VS Code plugin to improve my work flow, published it on the marketplace a few days ago so that I can easily install it everywhere. But to my surprise that shit gets about 7 installs a day! I don't get why. I don't have clear instructions on how to use it anywhere.

One language that I have always wanted to give more attentio to but felt as if I was in a constant fight was Haskell.

To me it felt unintuitive, and required a MAJOR shift in practice to get going. I really wanted to give it a chance but could not.

Every other language felt natural(even Lisp) but haskell for some reason seemed like a major mindfuck)

First year of college. We had to write a program in assembly to let lights go on and off slowly but I couldn't get it to work and googled the shit out of it trying to get it to work to no avail. So I go to the teacher as I expected him to have a bit more documentation/knowledge on how the shit worked. He literally said oh let me google that for you. Which made me go 🤦‍♂️. In the end I never figured out how to get the lights on or off but luckily my team mates did a good enough job to get us passed in the class.

I have a half-complete project that was going really well, that I have immense enthusiasm and drive for, but I just can't get to it, kids/family takes up 100% of my time & it's honestly depressing me. I'm finally at a stage in my career/skills where I could complete this; the technicals and business are all within my grasp, but I've fucked myself by having a family, my life isn't mine any more, I gave it up. Not their fault. But will it ever get better? Maybe someone out there understands this pain; nobody around me does, I keep it inside.

Does it get easier?
I think it does but, I wanna hear it from someone.

Every little thing I want to do, I look it up online. Even if I've done it before, but I've probably forgotten how.
And the fact that there's A LOT of technologies out there, and that they'll just keep coming everyday, just adds to the overwhelming feeling I'm in.

Python's beauty does help a little though :)

Being a front end dev I suck at back end. I can do some stuff but some of the concepts and other things I really struggle to grasp.

Sometimes when I’m real clueless or have no idea how to do a task the best thing to do is ask one of the senior roles but whenever I ask him he rolls his eyes and huffs and puffs. I get it dev is quite a independent thing and you should do research etc. But it makes me feel so bad and I suck as if I don’t get the question he asked correct or I don’t understand he gets real impatient. I really do try I don’t want people to do it for me of course so I want to to understand but I just get moaned at. What do I do???

So I don't use Facebook, but I had an account and I decided to delete it.

Before I do that, I tried to use the tool they have to get all the information they have about me.

They said it will take sometime and I will get an email when its done so that I can download it.

It's been more than 24 hours.

Fucking hell! Why can‘t I block notifications for a specific conversation thread for a limited amount of time in Teams? I get spammed with shit that I don‘t care about but when I block it now, I will forget to unblock it later. 😡

So Igot that Samsung DeX thing a while ago. So far, it was just a nice gadget to have at hand, but I didn't get to use it properly since my laptop was always the better option sort of.
Now.
My power adapter for the laptop died last friday. I have a second one at home, but of course, I pack the wrong one for work.
Ended up working the entire day on the DeX. Thankfully, I just needed to do some web and office based stuff, and all the necessary documents are online anyway.
So that thing just saved my butt today, which is nice. Took a while to get used to, but it does it's job quite nicely.

To be honest: Iam suprised it works the way it does. Oh what a time to be alive...

Can I get Ubuntu on here somehow? I did find a Tmux? shell and was able to download some ubuntu onto it, but it had gpg issues.

To be honest the exact bug I don't remember. I do recall that it had something stupid I had been trying to fix to get nodejs working on a raspberry pi. I finally figured it out and managed to get a simple rest server going. After hours of trying to fix what might now seem insignificant, I was not only relieved that I got it working, but also thrilled that I kept at it and managed to fix it.

I bought a new pc and am excited about using it, but, Windows wouldn't be Windows if its installation went flawlessly. Facking Windows.

For 4 evenings I've been trying to get Windows 7 installed on it, and it just fails with the sooooo helpful error message 😑 It's missing a driver for a cd/dvd drive but of course it won't specify which, or where to get it. Moreover, I don't even have a facking cd/dvd drive!! Moronic Windows. (I'm (trying to) install via usb). For fuck sake

I tried everything Google had to offer, but to no avail. Now I am just stuck. Silently sitting there... Not coming up with solutions.

Working remotely is very rare where I'm from. I only know one other guy does work remotely and thats it.

I feel hopeless after Unity fails to start/run under your primary user but works fine using guest user and other user in the system. And i did my research to fix it, but none seems to work. :(

I wanted to make small application to speed up my dad's job, app is about duplicating models in X website (I don't want to say directly what website).
So I started by checking it has API, Yup, It has, but you need OAuth ID, to get it you need to write to support.
So I did it, my mail was something like that: "Hello, can I get access to your API, I want to make app to duplicate models with same settings, Thanks"
I've got an answer like that "Hello, our website doesn't have duplicating feature."
My reaction was: Wtf? I know it doesn't have that feature, That's why I want to make it. How did he get hired as technical support?

What would be the easiest starting point on low level languages?

I started with java, learned to hate it.
I continued with web development, learned to hate it.
Continued with PHP, learned to hate it.
Continued with scripting languages like Python, NodeJS, etc.., hated it from the beginning but it was easy.

But everytime i touch something like c/c++/rust/etc i immeadiatly give up, because the syntax is so different than all these other high level languages and so much null/type safety and so on.

But i want to get into low level programming languages which compile to an executable and don't get executed on some "vm".

I was not such a coffee person, but now at work, I really get it.
it's a sin to say bad about Coffee as a developer.

Why is everyone into big data? I like mostly all kind of technology (programming, Linux, security...) But I can't get myself to like big data /ML /AI. I get that it's usefulness is abundant, but how is it fascinating?

Has anyone else encountered this issue with installing a distro before?

So my colleague has installed Elementary OS 5.0 and he recommended me to do the same (on my personal dual boot laptop). However after the installation it doesn't reboot after clicking the button, and when I turn my laptop off and on again I get the grub as I should, choose elementary, I get the login screen all fine. But after logging in I only get the wallpaper and my cursor. I can't even open a terminal...

I've searched my ass off and everyone is saying to wait around 5 minutes before everything shows up after which you get to install graphic drivers. I've tried that but nothing happened so I just left it for the night hoping I could at least open a terminal in the morning, but there is still only the wallpaper and cursor.

I've tried pretty much anything at this point but I just can't get it to function. Is there anyone that has had such an issue before that could share a solution?

I know and I understand why people still opt for Windows but if they also try to pirate it, that's the only time to tell them to go get Linux. If they're too cheap to get the Windows license, go Linux.

I'm a CS student, and I'm having serious doubts. I love programming and my job on campus has me making a .net site and such which I enjoy.
However, I'm doing really bad in calculus again, and if I fail it I may never get to retake it because it's my third try. I know I can get a job without a degree, but I'm unsure if I even want to program anything that would require knowledge of calculus anyway. I understand what it accomplishes, but I don't want spend the rest of my life applying calculus. Is it really that important in industry? Or is it just something college puts an undue pressure on?
My CS courses don't challenge me much, and I enjoy them a little, but is being great at calculus required?

Joined a startup with crazy work culture in Jan.
Have been working 14 hours a day for months starting march 2020, and even that was only to barely keep up with my colleagues. I have been one of the top performer in my previous jobs.

since the beginning, It always bothered me seeing people working on weekends, and falling behind if I didnt, to not have time for anything else, but I started really hating it a couple of months back.

Work has slowed down a bit now, but I just can't do it. Cant focus and get even basic tasks done. Still getting by with last minute efforts but I hate it!

Dont have the guts to leave the job, but also realise I am not doing enough and will get kicked out eventually anyway.

What can I do, to get over this?

You know what feature about macOS I just don't get? Notification center. I don't know what it is about it, but it just seems kinda out of place. Maybe because an app's notifications aren't cleared when it's opened? It's just not a feature I use.
