My last night:
- Had nothing much to work on.
- Opened a porn site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good video.
- Realized full screen isn't working on the page.
- Fired up JS console, spent the next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.
Bad UI = No Fuck.23 -
Me: "I'll never be able to do this"
Me: "I suck at coding"
Me: "What am I even looking at"
Me: "Im going to get fired for being incompetent"
Me: "They could have hired a child with more coding prowess"
Supervisor: "Hey, good job. Keep up the good work."
Me: "Pfft of course you're talking to a pro here."13 -
Interviewer: So how long did you work at your last job?
Man: 30 years
Interviewer: and how old are you?
Man: 22 years
Interviewer: you're 22 and you have 30 years of experience that's not possible
Man: and you are looking for a junior dev with 5 years of experience4 -
I wasn’t even looking for a job, I just went out for drinks with friends and I met this random dude. I complained to him about work wanting us to go back to the office, to which he replied that I should go work for them because they’re remote and looking for people. I had a look at their openings and they had a role with fewer responsibilities and a lot more money, so I applied. It’s been 3 months and I’m so glad I switched.11

Recruiter: This is a 100% remote position
Dev: Good! That’s what I’m looking for.
Recruiter: But the company does require you to come into the office “on occasion”
Dev: I live 5 hours away from your office so that would be not a good fit
Recruiter: And once covid is over the ability to work remotely will be getting reconsidered. You’ll likely need to move cities in order to continue your employment with them.
Dev: Yeah I’m looking for 100% remote work
Recruit: This is 100% remote! Just with the need to come into the office sometimes now and potentially more later.
Dev: …15 -
"Can you give an example of a work-based conflict you were involved in, and how you went about resolving it?"
"Heh, ohhhh yes. Last job actually. Manager flipped out at me for the billionth time for no reason at all. I calmly handed my notice in, changed a bunch of encryption keys and disabled a bunch of users on the server before leaving and never looking back."
"Wow. Seriously?!"
"Absolutely. I'm very forward-looking."
Still no idea if the guy just decided to turn up to the interview to waste our time, or he really was stupid enough to think that was a positive.10 -
Been lurking here for a while. Finally pissed off enough to post.
Been programming in Ada for nearly a decade now. One of the few younger devs who knows the language well. Have a large collection of libraries and tools written in it, open source. Done contract work. Looking to get out of my current line of work, which is medicine, because fuck this recent legal climate. I'm spending all my time dealing with legal compliance and it rapidly changing.
I see a job posting from a company looking for a programmer to mostly write testing stuff for clients. They mostly work with Ada. I've written a whole unit testing and integration testing framework. Perfect. Apply. "You don't have the required skills." Oh... K then.
Wanna guess what I was just offered as contract work. Same company. I guess i'm fucking qualified if you asswipes sought me out to ask me to fix your fucking bullshit.
What the hell is wrong with management and HR in recent years?9 -
I'm beginning to get burned out on coding in general due to work-related stresses.
Is anyone hiring remotely?
Please?
Will code in Ruby/Node/React for food ☹27 -
"Hi! I love your work on github! I'm planning a cryptocurrency exchange and am currently looking for a developer to work with. Would you be interested in working with me and if so, how much would it cost?"

Them: Root, you take too long to get tickets out. You only have a few simple ones. You really need to rebuild your reputation.
Also them: Hey, could you revisit this ticket? Could you help ____ with this other ticket? Hey Root, how do you do this? Root, someone had a suggestion on one of your tickets; could you implement that by EoD? Hey Root, i didn't read your ticket notes; how do you test it? Hey, could you revisit this ticket for the fourth time and remove some whitespace? Hey Root, someone has non-blocking code review comments you need to address before we can release the ticket. Hey Root, we want to expand that ticket scope by 5-6 times; still labeled a trivial feature though.
Also them: Super easy ticket for you. Make sure you talk with teams A, B, C, D, E and get their input on the ticket, talk with ____ and ____ and ____ about it, find a solution that makes them all happy and solves the problem too, then be sure to demo it with everyone afterward. Super easy; shouldn't take you more than a couple days. Oh, and half of them are on vacation.
Also them: Hey, that high-priority ticket you finished months ago that we ignored? Yeah, you need to rewrite it by tomorrow. Also, you need to demo it with our guy in India, who's also on vacation. Yes, tomorrow is the last day. (The next day:) You rewrote it, but weren't able to schedule the demo? Now you've missed the release! It's even later! This reflects very poorly on you.
Also them: Perfect is the enemy of good; be more like the seniors who release partially-broken code quickly.
Also them: Here's an non-trivial extreme edgecase you might not have covered. Oh, it would have taken too much time and that's why you didn't do it? Jeez, how can you release such incomplete code?
Also them: Yeah, that ticket sat in code review for five months because we didn't know it was high-priority, despite you telling us. It's still kinda your fault, though.
Also them: You need to analyze traffic data to find patterns and figure out why this problem is happening. I know you pushed the fix for it 8 months ago, and I said it was really solid, but the code is too complex so I won't release it. Yeah I know it's just a debounce with status polling and retrying. Too complex for me to understand. Figure out what the problem is, see if another company has this same problem, and how they fixed it.
-------------
Yep. I'm so terrible for not getting these tickets out, like wow. Worst dev ever. Much shame.

From the director of the department within a large investment bank: "We will be looking into converting all Java code to Cobol because it is easier to work with".
Needless to say I started looking for a new job that night.6 -
today while I was at work, gets a call from an unknown number
Some lady: "hello, is this Mr XYZ."
Me: "yes".
she:" are you looking for a job? are you working somewhere?"
Me: "I'm currently wor... *she ends the call*."
what the fuck that was, fuck you. at least let me finish the sentence god dammit7 -
Big "company summit" this week where everyone flies in and we discuss the future of the company (sadly not over drinks). I might be getting promoted with stock and pay increase, and allowed to hire another dev.
Yet, here I am, updating and sending out my resume, and hoping for something, anything.
A 30% raise wouldn't be enough to deal with all of this madness.15 -
Job interview.
Head of development: "I'm looking for the perfect php developer with perfect MySQL knowledge."
Me: "We'll ok. Good look with finding that unicorn. I think we are done here."
The problem with some people is that they are the gatekeepers for other people's careers and that they are begging to be bullshitted: "Yes of course I am the best of all php developers! And I don't only know MySQL but am pretty awesome in YourSQL as well!" As if I want to work in a team posers.2 -
*Programming on my API*
"This should work fine, let's devRant for a little"
*Back to programming and looking at the code I just wrote before*

Root has standup.
Root: I had no ticket yesterday morning, so I followed up on <TicketA> with <PersonA> and updated it in Jira and linked its related tickets; talked with <PersonB> about <TicketB>, and reviewed code review comments on <TicketC>, and thought about those while looking into the CI spec failure on <TicketD>. I collapsed for 3 hours before fixing it. Halfway through the collapse, I talked with <PersonC> on <TicketC> CR comments and the spec issue in <TicketD>, then went to lay down again. Afterward, I solved the spec issue in <TicketD>, and started on the new ticket <TicketE> before calling it a day. Plans today are to <…>.
Manager, in private: I need you to proactively let me know if you’re taking long breaks and aren’t working as this impacts business flow.
—————
Yeah.
My update was four times longer than the others’ despite her not giving me a ticket to work on. I responded to slack while I was collapsed on the floor and discussed tickets. And, after I recovered, I went back to work to finish my 8h shift. But this isn’t good enough? And I need to let her know in advance when I’m going to collapse and be a bloody mental zombie for hours? It would be amazing if I knew. I barely have a few minutes notice, and that’s only if I’m really paying attention and looking for signs.
And (conjecture) she probably still thinks I’m not performing well enough. “Affecting our business flow” probably means she’s angry I didn’t talk to other people about low-priority <TicketE> yesterday while I was laying on the damned floor.
Goddamn I hate her.11 -
Looking through the commit log waiting for work to pick up for the day.

at a recent interview:
🕴️ interviewer: are you familiar with PHP?
Jr Me 👶: well I'm currently studying it but I thought this was a front end position? I'm looking to work with js, sass and UI design.
🕴️: Well PHP is frontend and we are working with it in our CMS.
👶:... *Getting weird WordPress flashbacks*.. I think I'll continue looking but thanks for your offer.
Later that day I checked if their websites have wp-login.php and woop de fucking doo... It does.. as well as all their clients sites..
Dodging bullets like the freaking Choose one! Ps. Second time this happens.. gotta start checking this before going to the interview..6 -
Shit morning, I work in tech, so I guess it is related haha.
First, I wake up and it is cold. Like -12 degrees Fahrenheit. With wind-chill, feels like -29 according to Google. Then, while getting ready for work, my only belt breaks. Not a little, but literally splits in half! Fucking sucks, as my pants keep partially falling down and my shirt keeps untucking.
I go out in this cold that could kill a polar bear, go to start my car. Can you fucking guess? Dead fucking battery. Fuck! Now I am super late to work.
Make it to work, and guess what? My manager just promised 100% completion by Friday, and we are weeks behind! Fucking sucks... I think my coworker snapped, as he keeps hyperventilating at his desk for no reason. Oh and our best coder just quit...
Waiting to either wreck my car or find out my dog is dead when I get home...4 -
Fidget spinners are stupid.
But what do you have on your desk instead?
The challenge of a Rubik's Cube? A classic Newtons Cradle? A stack of empty pizza boxes? Magnets, because how do they work? The one and only devRant stress ball?
I'm looking for something to mess with when I'm staring in disbelief at horrible PRs.
Preferably something semi-creative, tactile and stress-relieving. The three-dimensional material equivalent of the doodle.
Something which is less annoying for coworkers than the clicky switches in my keyboard. And a bit more appropriate than my genitals.34 -
Been looking for a part time game dev job to pass the time during summer break, got a reply from a guy.
This part came up some time in the middle of our conversation:
Me: So, do you have a version control system in place?
Him: Excuse me, a what?
Me: A Version control system, like Git.
Him: Ow, what's that?
Me: It is a way to host projects in a more productive way for two or more people. It allows us to share our work more easily and work on the same file without overwriting and losing data.
Him: Ow, like Dropbox?
He was developing the game solo thus far and no idea such thing existed.

Applied for a company and received a contract today. I can't believe what I'm looking at. (Graduate software engineer)
- £30k starting salary
- 28 days annual holiday
- no benefits whatsoever
- no work schemes
- reserve the right to tell you to work overtime without extra pay
- reserve the right to work you from home on weekends in emergencies
- you will only work on what they tell you to and nothing else
This company has awful reviews all over the internet which I didn't see until after applying.
Going into their offices for interviews, all I saw was a bunch of slaves on their screens, no one talking, no one smiling.
Spoke to the CTO whose words were, quote: "we only care about making money, we don't care what people are saying about us as long as they are using our service and paying us."
What the actual fuck?15 -
Hello everyone, this is my rant.
I work in a start-up as an Android developer and we were looking for our first iOS developer.
After two months searching, some guy was finally hired last week.
My boss already told me he didn't have my programming level, but we needed him because he had experience as community manager and good Photoshop skills, and right now we need a profile like that in our company.
Today the new guy asked me what are setters and getters.
How fucked is my company? Is there hope for us?9 -
>On a call with Manager
>he's showing off some code
>oh cool he's finally assigning me some real work
PM: So yeah, just wanted to have you on a call to show you how easy it was to fix this.
Me: ... Oh... OK.
PM: yeah so this was completely broken. The last guy that was working on this didn't do a great job. Like seriously, what is this? Amateur hour? Hahaha
Me:... Haha... Yeah, right... 🫠
PM: anyways I figured I would go ahead and do this because it would take me 10 minutes to figure out. It would probably would have taken you 3 hours or something to figure out.
Me: ok... <why tf am on this call other than for you to shit on my skills?>
PM: anyways just wanted to walk you through what I did and show you how easy it was to fix.
Me: ok.10 -

Lots of stress and strain the last months private and at work.
Headache all the days and no time to get back to my self. Programming starts to get tedious.
Now changing my life completely.
Broke up with my girlfriend and started looking for a new work - finally got a new contract today.
Dismissal coming on Monday.
3 months to go to get a enjoyable life.
PS: lurking some months and finally created an account. Thanks for all the rants which let me smile!3 -
Pretty simple oversight in a SQL pull led someone to run about 3,300 background checks that had already been run. Somebody told me we spend $25 per check, which would have totaled around $84,000. It ended up being much less, but for a good 40 minutes I assumed I'd be looking for other work the next day.1

Let me share a piece of advice to entry level devs that are getting ready for job interviews that I wish someone gave to me when I was first looking for work straight out of school. Do not focus making yourself look good to this company by trying to make your resume flashy or trying to oversell yourself. Although its important to present yourself sure, but it should not be the foundation for you to base your interview goals around. Rather focus on the company itself. Find out whether the company itself uses modern technology, practices and upholds to project management and the software development cycle, find out how they work, communicate and develop as a team. Simply put focus on whether they are worth working for instead of looking like your worth being hired. Can they collaborate, communicate and solve problems efficiently. Otherwise you may end up getting hired and hating your job. Just a thought and some advice on my own experiences. Hope it helps someone.3

While working with an older programmer,
Me: "Hey Randall, get latest version, I made a checkin"
10 minutes later...
Me: "Hey Randall did my fix work for you?"
Randall: "I'm still going through TFS looking for NO's"
Look at his screen, he is manually going through the file structure, checking the version of each file
Me: "You know you can get latest version of the folder"
Randall: "You can't always trust that, I've had problems with it in the past"
Me: (insert hair pull emoji)2 -
Worst: I lost development contract - probably due to covid - after 4 years of work. I got email when I was at bank seconds before signing mortgage for my first apartment.
I signed it anyways as a technically unemployed person without income looking at the world collapsing.
Best: I gained new contract with 40% money raise. Fuck yeah ! -
Tracing thousands of lines of codes at work to find something for almost 2-3 hours.
All of a sudden I can't remember what I am looking for anymore.

Fuck this shit, fuck it, take it down, smash it with a rock and fuck it. Fucking 18th century system where we are graded for a 2 hour work after 6 months of learning. Fuck the idiots who think reading from a piece of paper will teach us something. Fuck the sheep who follow without looking aside. Fuck the asshole who initiated it all, and fuck this shit. Thank you.9
-
Ha ha ha ha. Fucking morons!
You brag about being a highly skilled company.
You tell me I don’t have enough experience despite three years of uninterrupted activity where I currently work
You’re willing to give me a chance (I just don’t know how to express my gratitude)
BUT among your super talented team members you can’t find anybody capable of conducting a technical interview?? And you’ve been looking for over a month for someone who could do it?
Thanks for wasting my time with three useless HR interviews you worthless DIPSHITS!2 -

Hey guys, I'm looking for small and cheap vibrators. One that you can use in an IOT project, the size of the ones in smart phones.
My searches on goggle are getting !work friendly results. Any ideas of a shop I can order some? Small miniature motors too.14 -
Down a non-technical rabbit hole yesterday:
- watch a cat bury his poop during smoke break
- google "why do cats bury their poop"
- click a link to the Felidae family
- get interested in the differences between puma's, cheetahs and tigers
- read up on the whole genealogy in detail
- spend an hour looking up the endangered status of Felidae
- close work laptop
"Nuff for today"8 -
I just got offered my first position for a Junior developer gig. they are offering me more money than I expected and otherwise I'm super amped to take it.
what makes me nervous is its my first programming position. I have an IT/Programming bachelor's but not a pure Computer Science degree.
I was asked no technical questions and I don't know if it was clear that I'm very much looking for entry-level work. I guess the fear of failure is creeping up on me.9 -
"I met with a potential client today and part of their opening gambit was how they were looking for revolutionary work delivered within a tight timescale, and if the work could be done a reduced rate then they’d be able to send a load more work our way. … They were saying that they wanted work that was fast, good, and cheap. And if the work was fast, good, and cheap enough, the reward would be the offer of more work that is fast, good, and cheap. … Let me be clear about this, these people are evil, and their work is poison. " - Hoss Gifford1

Fellow devs,
If your boss asks you for an estimation don't follow your gut coz your gut sucks. Ask for time to analyse before giving any estimation. And yeah don't forget external factors such as :
- third party tool down (github I'm looking at you)
- updates (windows, IDE, etc.)
- 90% of the time it doesn't work
- if it involves front dev just go ahead and double your estimation
- YOUR BOSS THINKS YOU OVERESTIMATED
Sincerly.2 -
Just redid a small work script in Golang to test it out.
Honestly, speed matters little for what it is, the original was in Python.
By heavens Golang is one ugly ass looking language.
I like using it tho, its easy to understand and performant for networking, file io and shit like that.
But man....shit is ugly to look at from a distance.
I do think that most langs look ugly af tho, so shit is allright.
Syntactic whitespace is still shit btw.12 -
I just accepted an offer as a backend dev for a startup in Berlin, Germany. I’m looking forward to all the coffee and beer I will drink while I work. 😆7

When you want to get stuck into coding, but you just KNOW someone is waiting to interrupt you. It could be 5 minutes from now, 10 minutes or 45. You don't know. You can hear their breathing and their footsteps, just waiting for you to get deep into your code.
So you sit there looking for pointless short term crap to do until you know it's clear to start work.2 -
Well in America, developer is the current "hot" career if you wanna make bank and rightly so, you can make a great salary. However the "business types" politicize the position since it's trendy right now and do all sorts of undesirable things like looking for "10x" or "rockstar" devs, etc. It's really just an excuse to have you on call 24/7. Some jobs, you go home, but you never really clock out of work. Well, if you even make it home; you could end up always travelling for your work.
But at least it's a romanticized and well paid position, unlike system admin, who may work the same hours but will never have the "cool" job.7 -
IIS is a piece of shit. Windows is for playing video games and looking at stupid memes, not for real work. Defenders say that wInDoWs SeRvEr Is PoWeRfUl REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, but it only appears powerful because microshit took all of the things that normal servers can do easily, split it up nonsensically, and hid it in bizarre places in an overdesigned and FUCKING CONFUSING set of config menus. No one can change my mind about this.10
-
> So, I am looking for a job.
> I see a position in a video games store for a cashier/consultant.
> The announcement says to apply with a button.
> The button in question works only if you are registered and have your information filled in.
> Registered and filled out the information.
> The button won't work right because the damn website just does not think I entered anything.
This is why I hate online job hunting11 -
Just had one of the most cringiest HR interview ever. I'm looking for a new job, and yesterday applied for several med/senior backend developer positions and immediately got response from a well known software company.
We schedule a call today 9:00am, so I take homeoffice and wake-up half an hour earlier than usual.
First thing I notice, lady is 5mins late, but okay its morning, we're all humans, so I don't mind it even though some other person might call it a classical sign of disrespect and hangup right away.
First question: Why did you apply for our company?
- Euhhmm cause I'm looking for a new job and I saw your job ad yesterday?
Second question: Why would you like to work at our company?
- Left speechless.. Well I honestly don't know, not really following your company, I know that you exist but that's about it, shouldn't you be telling me this? (*heavy breathing on the other side*)
The rest of interview left me quite uninterested due to initial questions, like what the hell, I can imagine these being alright for interns and junior developers who might be fascinated by opportunity to work for a big and well known company to build their CV, but c'mon I've went through shit already and honestly don't care for who I work for as long as they have interesting projects, are paying me right and have couple small benefits I'm looking for such as homeoffice, gym card etc..8 -
Finished my internship today, turns out I won't be getting hired because upper management is cutting back due to COVID.
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck, compared to the horror stories I've read here, it was beautiful. The work experience was super worth it though, despite the intern pay. Time to start looking for a real job I guess.2 -
Just saw an upwork job post that said
"Apply if you're looking to build your profile and gain experience and not work for money"6 -
After days and days of thinking and looking for inspiration, yesterday I came up with an original design.
Everything good, and after an hard work I relax reading the Google Play Awards 2018 nominations. Fine, except for the fact that there's an app which looks EXACTLY like mine.1 -

So here's a story..
Whenever we have a job announcement, whether tech or dev, there's this one guy who applies every single time and never gets selected. I have interviewed him once and learnt that he doesn't in fact have the skills or experience we're looking for. Also someone else with better experience applies everytime. He's been doing this for more than 3 years now.
Now WE feel embarrassed everytime he comes in for interview.
You can't blame him for wanting to work so much with one of the best teams in our tiny country. I gotta say I really admire his perseverance and I think and hope that he's gonna find what he's looking for with that kinda perseverance.2 -
Boss: oh so you are working on that unrealistic 3week project ? Let me also assign you some completely unrelated office work.

Boss: oh don't worry I'm sure you'll do great!
Me: that's not what I'm sayi...
Boss: ok I have to go now, have it ready by tomorrow!

Ive been looking for a hobby for years but nothing is interesting enough.. i lose interest within a few hours (besides cars but thats expensive so i only work on it very once in a while).
But now everything changed.. I was looking for something that keeps my mind busy but I was soooo bored those last months that I went fishing just to get outside..
turns out my new hobby is the opposite of what i was looking for.. fishing and completely turn off my brain.. its so calming to just be alone in the nature and do a very simple task, thowing out and pulling in with a chamce of catching a nice dinner.. try-catch basically..
assembled my first custom rod today, i kept in mind what i liked about certain rods and then put the best of each of them into my own rod..
if youre stressed and and introvert you should try it..
havent been that calm in years..17 -

This fucking bitch whose whole linkedin consists of being a LAWYER, started a software company in 2021 and is now contacting me looking for (get this) a role where i have to work:

My desk is also looking scenic and shit, that if flowers were cheaper I'd make a flower crown for every robot I work with. Lol.4 -
I posted a long-winded Twitter thread describing the experience I have in software development and advertising that I’m looking for a job. It felt awkward as hell to do, but yolo. I’ve had a few people reach out as a result; here’s hoping something works out. Hilariously, absolutely forgot to talk about databases. 😅

Updated an online profile on a jobsite this morning for a frontend job. Got called this afternoon:
Recruiter: “i have this great frontend opportunity for you. Are you interested and can i mail the vacancy over?”
Me: “yes i’m looking for something so mail it and i’ll get back at you”
A few moments later...
Recruiter mailed a backend function
This is why people don’t like to work with recruiters.3 -

Lesson learnt never work in a community project if your looking for money.7 -
Looking for some advice....
So I'm a web dev that works remotely full time from home which I love, I'm expecting my first child in late march which is really exciting but I'm starting to think about how it's all going to work with the missus home for at least 12 months and of course a baby that (without sounding horrible) is going to be a big distraction to me when I'm trying to work.
So just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there in a similar position or that has gone through the same thing and how you did it? Is there any advice you can give me?
Appreciate any thoughts.13 -
I'm making a telegram bot to allow printing and scanning for my roommates that have Windows and since printer and scanner are prehistoric there are no drivers that work with Windows higher than XP.
I'm looking for more ideas on features for bot.18 -
Just signed my work papers, managed to get a front-end developer position after looking for a while! Moved to a much bigger city too6

I really dislike the company I work at.
I want to say hate, but there are parts that I adore (mostly the people I get to work with).
However, I dislike:
- The management
- The way engineers are treated
- Lack of responsibility for on QA for finding bugs, and it falling solely onto the engineers
- Sales circle jerk every All Hands meeting
- The amount of "ring-around-the-rosy" they played with me for a 10k raise (took 12+ months and not what I was looking for when I first asked)
- They lie
Just a shitty company overall. Interesting product depending on what team you're on, but overall I'd rather dye my hair green and become a talking broccoli stock.8 -
"Why don't you look for a new job?"
I have a monthly coffee meetup with an ex colleague, where we rant about each others frustrations at work. Since she used to be part of my team she knows everybody and can relate to my stories and updates. In short: she was the kick in the boot I needed to start looking, and after the summer break I'll start a new job making 45% more.2 -
I've just updated my career interests on LinkedIn selecting only the "Remote" checkbox.
After some hours I received the first offer: «We are looking for [...] Unfortunately, remote work is not an option today, however, we do offer full relocation and immigration support.»
So, still SPAM. Again. Fuck.2 -

Any skilled front enders in South Africa looking for a job in Johannesburg? My recruiters definition of qualified is "bookmarked w3schools - once".
It's a well paid job in a great work environment which approves the use of devRant. You will have complete control over design & ux. Lots of interesting things to work on we don't do 5 page sites and WordPress is a swear word.
Happy to offer a joining / relocation bonus.5 -
FUCKING IE!
Anyone please remember to ask if the project|s that you're going to work on do|es need Internet Explorer support.
If it's the case just expect any resemblance of modern frontend development skills go backwards into the backward compatibility territory and never going forward.
I'll start looking for another job, can't be bothered for this payment and regressing my dev skills for client needs.
Again FUCK YOU IE!6 -
We have a Monday meeting at 07:30. Yes, I have to BE at work at 07:30.
Now, my boss knows full well that I have to fight through traffic every single fucking day and also that I travel for on average just over an hour. Some days we're looking at closer to 2 hours!
And, without fail, the meeting will start at 07:30 with or without me. There are days that I catch the arse end of the meeting (like today) or other days were I miss the meeting altogether.
I'm done with this company in any case and am currently looking for alternative employment. And I'm also done with going to these people and talking about this!9 -
My Chromebook Pixel 2015 died yesterday. *sniff* I really liked the build quality and using crouton for Linux.
My 2nd work laptop ever was a IBM Thinkpad and I really liked that back in the day.
Now I'm looking at the Thinkpad 25th anniversary edition. Anyone have one? Thoughts?3 -
I was in school looking for intern places when a teacher told the class he had an amazing company for about 20 students. Got the intern job by doing my first ever job interview. After a year I got a traineeship while still in school (3 days school, 2 days work).
Now I have a job there, which for now is helping new interns and trainees while sales is searching for projects for me. (I work at a company which "sells" developers for a certain time, Im not sure what the english term for "detachering" is) -
Anyone have one of the new MacBook Pros with Touchbar? I'm looking for some project ideas to work on.
I already am working on a project for the Pi-hole project (network wide ad-blocking) but I am looking for some other good ideas. I think Apple's view of the Touchbar fell short, but as developers I think it opens up a lot of possibilities to use it as a great information/monitoring tool.
I am also still learning Objective-C and Swift so I am a newbie.5 -
I just got my stickers in the mail... looking very elegant on my computer. I can't wait to show off at work 😍
Thanks for everything @dfox and @trogus, and thanks to all the devRanters 😉2 -
Looking for a random pic for work I typed "img" on DuckDuckGo and child pornography appeared.
I sent an email to report the crap, but no reply back.
What should I do more?4 -
tell my boss on Friday that I'll work through the weekend to get done work done on some python code.
he doesn't give out vpn access so I can't use our company git so I put the project on a flash drive to work on.
come into work and I have an email. on Sunday he did everything I said I was doing (and had done) and then refactors the entire repo so even if he hadn't done the work, all of what I did became useless.
His way is the only way. but good luck getting him to tell you how he wants it. you just have to do a bunch of work only for him to tell you he doesn't like the way you did things and then he does it himself.
makes me realize why their other programmers didn't stick around. because they had to work so closely with this guy.
glad I started looking for other jobs sooner then later.1 -
Why hello there, your profile mentions you're not looking for an offer and lists PHP as a technology you don't want to work with.
Boi, are you in luck, cause I have that sweet PHP offer for you3 -
So, maybe 6 hours ago or so, I was randomly browsing Github and stuff, came across https://git.io/vABiT in the Trending page. "Hell yeah, I'd go for some swag".
Started looking through them all, eventually found myself here on devRant. Instantly fell in love, it's the perfect mix of jokes, puns, and rants. Now it's 5 AM and I've got work at 10... Worth it, for sure!
Anyways, hello guys, glad to have found this place, really loving the feel of it all.3 -
Looking for some advice

Does anyone here have anything interesting to do? I am free now so looking for something creative to work on.

Took some leave recently to interview for a new job. Back to work to find that I have nothing to do. Asked for more work and got nothing. This place just gives me constant reminders of why I'm looking elsewhere4

Relatively new to programming. I have worked with c++ for about 7 months, worked with c# in unity to make games, created lots of different scripts and other programs using bash, python, racket and Java for class.
I am looking to become a video game developer, I work with unity and do lots of coding challenges on hackerrank.com and some other stuff. But I am wondering what I should do to really improve and am wondering what some of the vets out there would tell me to do, what kinds of projects to create, how to get better at programming as and whole andnd knowing more about the subject in general. Any help is appreciated, I'm looking to start 2017 on the right track to success!10 -
I started searching for a job as I'm insecure at my current position because of this pandemic. What I found is ridiculous.
Companies are looking for junior developers with an experience of a senior developer ready to work for a salary of an intern 😭4 -
!rant, opinion/discussion
What are your thoughts or experiences with Ruby on Rails? Does it have a bright future?
I'm currently only using PHP for server-side web stuff, but looking for ideas for more beautiful languages.
I know C#, but because 95% of web servers I work on are Linux based, it's (as far as I currently know) not an option. Or is ASP.NET Core somewhat supported on non-root (basic hosting) linux servers?7 -
Hate these managers.
I started working on a company 6 months back. When i joined i was told such amazing things about this place. I was given a job to develop a tool for a client. I did that alone. Now that the final deployment is done i am not needed there any more. I can start looking for outside work. WTF why would you hire a guy if you want him to work for only 3-4 months when you can hire a consultant or someone on contract or mention that in beginning. Fuck you even i want to leave this place now as soon as possible but still have to see their stupid faces for next 2 weeks.2 -

I worked a whole year in a company for which I produced 30 software and none of them saw the publication even though they were completed. I was the most productive employee and had a productivity of 428% compared with the other employees.
All because of the constant changes in business strategies.
For a moment I believed to be a pirate ship during a storm. When I was tired of the way they were treating employees, months of backlog payments, unpaid leave or not granted, I quit and I was told to me that I was a bad employee and I was unproductive.
In a month he is left only the designer working. At the moment the company in question is still looking for employees, after more than a year no one wanted to work again. Stupid me.
While I ras looking for another job I did freelance for a month, gaining about five times my earlier pay. -
Been working on some projects that will hopefully train me for work projects on my personal laptop. Ever since my reinstall there has been a crap-ton of screen tear.

I applied for a dev job, ofc _without_ looking at their references before sending my candidature.
Turns out 80% of their references are porn sites...
Most of them are quite big as far as I can tell, but I don't really wanna work for a company like them. I'm still young, I don't really think it would make a good impression later on if I'd had a company who makes 80% porn sites in their portfolio in my CV when posting for more serious stuff.
And they asked me for a phone interview. Should I accept it?5 -
Recruiters are driving me crazy, you can't even damn write a proper message with my name on it, no you just send 10000 messages a day and hope to get a response.

who else hates recruiters/ recruiting companies? I have been looking for work a while now and my inbox is inundated with "senior" level roles asking for 7+ years experience in every language imaginable. But how the fuck am I supposed to do that if no one will give me experience?? Rant over11

I am Lazy As Fuck, and I'm looking for people to work for a company that pays me for doing nothing.
Do you know anyone that is an Angular developer? If you do, please tell them to send me their resume and phone number.

Looking for platform specific language options for a new project at work and reading articles from well known sources.
If you start your article with something like, "when I think of a good programming language, I think of JavaScript", I'm going to punch out of your shitty opinion faster than an async function.
When you're trying to convey an unbiased message you generally don't start with, "I'm an absolute shill for {language}".
What the fuck happened to journalistic integrity?7 -
Sometimes it's a challenge to show how much work I've accomplished to a non-techie (<- any good nicknames for such people?).
I mean yes it looks like it's pretty simple but there were like ~5000 new lines of code and 2 weeks of work put into getting this thing working perfectly, looking sexy, and moving efficiently all while making sure it protects our infra from idiots like you!2 -

So I'm looking for advice.
I'm 16 and I'd like to eventually work at some sort of tech startup, probably doing something like web development as that's what I've done the most of. I have been teaching myself and practicing programming for years and have experience with HTML, CSS, JS, NodeJS, Socket.io etc. but don't necessarily have a lot of experience with some necessary frameworks such as ReactJS or AngularJS, so I couldn't really apply for any of the job listings I've seen so far. I currently work in retail so it's possible that I could work somewhere such as an Apple Store.
What's the best next step? Is a university course the right option or should I be trying to find something such as work experience?
If you got to the end, thanks for reading my long winded and badly written post. Looking forward to hearing the advice of some fellow devs.9 -
Hey there! :)
I have been lurking for half a year now and finally decided to create an account to share my stories in the future years.
I'm gonna start studying software-engineering for my bachelor's degree within the next month after already having studied programming for the past five years so I hope I can balance work, study and fun as well as I plan to.
Looking forward to that and generally having a good time on devRant. ^^3 -
Spent two hours having two recruiters give me test, interviewing, and being told HOW perfect I am for the job I was applying for; Just to be told they are only allowed to send over people they have found previous work for, but I should instead apply to these othwr positions that pay half what I'm looking for.
-
So my gf told me about a job offerin she heard. They're looking for Python dev for a weather website.
Cool sound good.
Thank god I went for a drink with friends that night cause when I mentioned the job...well.
Apparently this dick pays about a 100$ LESS than a MINIMUM wage (not to mention the hostile work environment).
Honestly idk how they even stay afloat. I mean you can make almost DOUBLE working at McDonald's. -
Realising that my skills were stagnating and there was no opportunity to improve them or grow my career.
After 5 years in the same job (longest I've held) I started looking for a new one.
I'm now in a new job, doing much better work (even if it's a little chaotic right now) with the potential for growth in the future.
Whilst I loved the old job in terms of the staff and the atmosphere, I now couldn't be happier I made the decision.1 -
I'll say one thing for June job searching...just by looking at logos it's really easy to shop around for a job that won't be at a woke company. Now I just need a job search filter that lets me sort out the temporary rainbow logos from the normal ones. (Honestly, how does anyone, gay or straight, work at any company that so blatantly shills for dollars through performative pandering? Just June. After that, "Gays? What gays?" Either commit to the WHOLE narrative all year long forever and change your logo permanently or GTFOH.)15

"In a sentence: Technically brilliant, delightful to work with, combined with a self-awareness and strong desire to improve. We also want to make sure everyone is highly supportive of each other; we win as a team."

Today at a friends graduation party I met her father(retired aged). He asked me what I do and I told him I am in web development. He says, 'I can't remember the name of the site but it's for looking up recipes. I don't like it because it's not very easy to use. Is that your fault?' Implying that because I work in web I am responsible for all poorly designed websites.... Awesome!2

Hi guys some advice would be appreciated.
I’m new here but have followed for a long time. I enjoy coding in my spare time, particularly web development but I am looking to make it my career.
Currently I work in mental health as a social worker, but ultimately the stress of the job and life in general has led to me being detained in a psychiatric hospital. So I’ve decided I need change.
I want to start a career I want to be in and that is as a developer. In terms of education, I started a degree in maths/cs a long time ago but stopped due to life events at the time. All the rest of my qualifications are around social work.
I’ve been doing my best to learn with Udemy and free code camp. Mainly looking at JavaScript. I also used to work in a charity where I did some (bad) php development and front end work.
Are there any self made developers out there who have any advice for me? I’m looking at doing a bootcamp but dunno if that will help at all.
Any help or advice would be really welcome. Cheers guys :)23 -
My first rant in ages:
Been assigned to a new Laravel project at work and the murthafucking lead dev got no fucking clue how to architect a big laravel app. Lead dev talking trash about encapsulation and every big oop grammar he can find while asking us to come up with an architecture concept for the app.
My annoyance is, the fecking project been in planning for like 7 months and d lead dev keeps saying he is looking for ideas on how we will build the app. Fuck this shit!1 -
So after school i was kinda roaming around, taking the odd paid programming job for clients, not really making any money, but also quite struggling because I was walking around with undiagnosed ADHD, for about the last 2ish years, not really making any money.
Since this February friends told me I might have ADHD, so I had it checked. Turns out I have been walking around with severe ADHD all my life :P That explained a fuckload... and now I got medication that works, yay!
Flash forward to 3 weeks ago, still not doing any work, all of sudden I get poked on linkedIn "hey we need a developer, wanna work for us?"
I wasnt really looking and since it was a message on linkedIn I figured it was just another of those overpromising recruiters, but it was very close to where I live so I decided to call them directly to check it out, expecting literally nothing, nor was I looking for work.
Roughly a week after that call I got a job as team lead backend developer...
Wait I was a total mess in the last 2 years, how did I end up as lead over an intern and 2 contracted freelancers?!?! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN!?
Sofar I am enjoying it.1 -
As my contractor job ends and my beginning the process of looking for new work the sudden feeling of imposter syndrome starts washing over me.
"I'm not qualified for any of these positions...", I say to myself, but then I think to myself, I wonder how devRanters deal with this.
So let me ask you, devRant, how have you dealt the *Experience Required* section of most jobs when job hunting?3 -
I got a call from a recruiter and told him I wasn't looking for a job. He told me he was ringing for clients who were looking for people who we well looked after in their jobs and not looking for work!

Me: Guess what, I've looking for the answer to that exact same question for a while now, but I still haven't found it. I'll make sure to tell you when I do.

Finally got round to signing up to a VPN for my devices and my sons. After a lot of research decided on surfshark, signed up for 3 years with great discounts. BUT, it doesn’t work on iPhone ( tried everything in the help) still bollox. Cancelled it and went for my second choice which was Nord. The software is great. Worked without issue, same on m1 mac. Thousands of servers worldwide. For me this is great and fast. So if you are looking for a fast reliable VPN Nord is the one. PS not affiliated or work for Nord, just an opinion and hopefully save someone else some grief.12

If you are looking for a frontender but your website is totally buggy on mobile, that doesn’t make a great impression. (On anyone really)
If i then see that you have someone walking around in a senior manager position who just came fresh out of school 3 years ago i’m just laughing my ass off.
Hell no i’m not gonna work for that scale-up!8 -
on every company i worked for, i always had this "senior" team mate that seems really knowledgeable with the way he talks and just by looking at his resume but doesn't reflect on his work. smh1

I spent several hours today looking for remote jobs on freelancer.com and this new platform called kalido. just a waste of my time.
All these platforms doesn't work for me.4 -
Job post I saw today. They are either looking for:
- C/C# Dev to the company
- HAPPY Frontend dev
- Java Dev to the company
Well now.. only the front end gets to be happy but doesn't know where to work while the other two can be grumpy and know they'll work at the company? 🤔4 -
My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8 -
Either a really big coincidence, or I'm officially creeped out.
I've been looking into buying a vps, so researching that a lot. Then today, I went to work, at a monitoring station, so we have to use remote desktops to access anything other than very specific sites.
Then I looked at an article about c#, and there was a Google ad, about a vps.. Keep in my mind, I'm at work, on a remote desktop, that gets cleared every time it's closed.
I know a vps isn't the most unpopular thing, but haven't seen an ad for it before.3 -
Looking back on 2020: I only did one small contracting job.
The client wasn’t putting their trust in us. I fired them. They went with another company. Almost a whole year - and the old flash site is still up there! Kinda a waste of time / but got paid for our work - and it feels great to just let shit go.
Besides that, I didn’t do any official dev work all year! I just continued working on our school curriculum and teaching. 2020 has been an R&D dream, really. I feel a bit spoiled! As I sit here in my Christmas pajamas!
Excited for 2021. -

So, I work for a startup, and I'm officially a fullstack guy, but with focus on backend, thusbour front end is bootstrap. We're currently are looking for a ui/ux/frontend person. Since we're a startup it would only be a 20% position an the max amount we could afford (as we're a startup) would be 800.- CHF a month for a freelancing position.
If you're interested, or would know someone, hit me up. We do have an "entry" test/problem and simply select upon that. The website would be https://reviewed.ch9 -
Customer complains about an issue after a software update. The head of department himself tested the update and got an error message.
Me looking at the logs. Ok, that's an issue, but based on hardware failure, customer should fix his hardware, no relation to the new software.
But surprisingly close to the software update, which piques my curiosity.
Me looking at older logs ... same issue. EVERY FUCKING DAY. For months. The corresponding error message only appears if a user is logged on, so quite a few people have seen it. Obviously nobody cared. Maybe we just ditch error messages, it'll save lots of work. -

I need one for work that doesn't send the data to a server... (I actually got in a bit of trouble using an online prettifier which apparently sends it to the server to format...)

I found a few but they were huge apps 40mb+)... and trials.
There was also a JS one but don't work well was the data isn't rectangular (objects have different properties)7 -

I can't decide what to do. I don't like my job. At all. I keep looking for new jobs in my area but there are none (just missed an opportunity with Rockstar 😞). I've had an offer to work with a platform that I really, really don't like and requires travel all over the country, but for almost double the money I'm on now. Should I stick with my current job til I find something better? Take this new offer for the money? Completely resign and become a hermit in the wild?4

!Rant
Yes, I know I'm shameless, but here we go:
Are there any norwegian devs out there that are looking for a new colleague (webdev)? :D
I'm going to be out of work in a few months time, and have started applying for jobs in the Oslo area, but most jobs I see listed require 3+ years of experience. I've worked with web for about 9 months and I'm keen to get more experience. Interested in a full time job or being a trainee.
Proficient in HTML, CSS/SASS, JavaScript/jQuery, PHP, Wordpress, MySQL.
If yoy know anything, please let me know :)5 -
I told a guy I work with that I thought LinkedIn was a dating app. I was very confused when I got a job offer to work here. When at the time I was looking for someone in my life that had an interest in programming.3

Hey everyone 🙂
I’m looking for a little input on a project I’ve had in my head for a while.
I want to make a schedule app that would cater to personal, work and school schedules alike, and give points or rewards for completing tasks on time. Like a reward kind of system.
What features would you most look for in a schedular / reminder app?6 -
What is your way of diagnosing a desktop/laptop?
An employee at work told me that her daughters laptop is acting strangely and she asked me, since I am into computer and I said sure. I said to her to tell her daughter what I am specifically looking for. I never really done this before.6 -
Not sure if it is the difference in the state of my mind or if it is the gradual reopening of the markets, but it's weird to me how a couple of months ago when I was looking for a job change, I could hardly find any good opportunities; but now that I am well entrenched in the current job I have, I keep getting random leads for decent job opportunities for the very profile I work in.1

Looking for some opinions here. Chatbot from scratch or use an existing service?
I have to work with a messenger chatbot. The company has been using chatfuel, so I'm trying to work with it but it's kinda buggy in some parts. Have any of you created a messenger bot from scratch? I flipped through the documentation and it seems like a pain in the ass, but it's obviously more flexible than using a third party service.
So yeah, I'm trying to weigh the convenience of the third party vs its limitations compared to coding my own. What's your take on it?2 -
So my laptop broke recently, and I've been looking for a replacement, but everything is so expensive.
I was thinking of just buying something really lightweight for like 100 - 200 $, then putting linux on it (no gui) and running everything through the terminal. I basically want to be able to work on github projects with, maybe use minimal internet.
Vim + git is all i use for github projects anyways, and lynx would let me do the small amount of internet that i want.
My one concern is that itd be very nice to have a window manager (terminator, i3, etc), not sure exactly how that would work with no gui.
Any thoughts on this setup overall? Or specifically the wm part?12 -
My experience looking up CSS issues comes down to millions of stack overflow solutions I don’t understand that never work for me15

A few weeks ago a friend was teaching me about 16bit numbers because we were making one in C# with a function, but he said we need two numbers for the function to work.(so as an example were gonna use 0, 2)
Now I didn’t understand how two numbers were supposed to make one. And my friend could not explain it to me. So I researched the topic all day and the epiphany happened I realized I was looking at it all wrong. I shouldn’t be looking at it as 2 decimal numbers but 2 binary values or two binary arrays forming one byte array with a length of 16.7 -

I was struggling to figure out why my Django template render wasn't working.was looking at code for hours.
Until I found that ,at the end of my render there was a comma making it a tuple.thats why it didn't damn work. -
I hate websites like upwork and freelancer, its impossible to outbid the other applicants while maintaining a price that makes the work worth the trouble. Yet without them its impossible to find clients who are willing to pay $1k for anything no matter how big of a project it is, they keep looking for $200 solutions. Hows a developer supposed to raise some cash for a house and shit like that.1

She: Hello, I am ABC from XYZ. We saw your profile and interested to discuss an intern opportunity with you.
Me: Yes please.
She: So can you tell me about your current projects or work.
Me: Deep learning and blah blah. I am interested to work in cryptography or deep learning based work this summer.
[15-18 Mins Discussion on project]
She: Sorry but we are looking for Web Developer for our website to work on jQuery.
Me: oh! It's okay. [ fuck 😐]1 -
Dear Web developers,
I'm looking to boost my skills and improve work flow. I was wondering what sort of tools, editors or platforms would you recommend? I currently use wordpress, php, jquery, sass, react, node and laravel.
I've heard about awesome ways where you can monitor project changes, something like github but with gui for design drafts and stuff.
Also I heard about good online platform for Web development, something like online sublime text where all your files are saved within cloud platform. I'm looking for something that will unify my work throughout different work places.
Lastly, are there any good sites or new technologies that are fairly popular and good to learn or research?12 -
Started working at a new company recently, like a week later me and my girlfriend decides to move in together at her place(6hour drive from my current work place).
So since im there during my trial period i contact another company looking for a job to have some kind of security in case they Fire my ass since im moving.
End up with a new better offer from another company and when breaking the News for the boss - a possibility to work on distance for my current position..
What to do, stay or take the better offer?1 -
Hey guys I've a question that's been on my mind for a little bit. I recently got my first full time dev job as a junior developer. Overall I'm really happy with the opportunity to work in the industry, but in the company we're using old technology ext js and PL/SQL. I'm wondering will this make things harder when looking for other jobs in the future that use more modern frameworks, or is it that the actual industry experience is more important?8

I'm at my limits with working from home. It started off really cool, but for a multitude of reasons I just need to get out of my house. I'm seriously considering renting a work space to at least go to part time. If anyone in the Denver area wants to go in on one, or is looking to rent out space, please let me know.3

Had a lab for class that asked for something super simple in Java. All you had to do was submit your source code when it was done, go through some test conditions, and if it passed you were free to go. I finished the work in 10 minutes, yet spent the next 40 trying in vain to submit it. The work was fine, I knew it was right, but no matter what I changed, the damn thing wouldn't accept my work. After countless attempts and changes, getting the professor herself over there looking at it, I finally figured it out.
I was submitting the class file by mistake.
Some errors are harder than others, I guess. -
Today a recruiter messaged me on Facebook. Week ago, I left a post with my CV on a programming group-currently I'm looking for a junior JAVASCRIPT (important ! ) /Node.js position, explicitly said so.
R(ecruiter): "Hello sir, we noticed your post with CV on group XYZ, are you still looking for a job?"
Me: "Yes, of course."
R: "We are building a new team in city X, remote work is possible. I will send you job posting right away."
Started reading it, job title is SENIOR JAVA DEVELOPER. Okay, maybe she sent me wrong document, maybe she wanted me to read just a bit about company and every job posting is pretty generic.
Me:" This job posting is for a senior programmer, I take it you're looking for juniors too ? I would happily take it, it's just I want a job to learn more things. Did you read my CV?"
R, annoyed: "Requirements for this position are quite clear, I believe. We are open to working with people with different experience level."
From there, she was pretty negative but I remained sympathetic and agreed to met with her boss next week. After all, maybe he has a position for me.

The count returns 19, my if statement is looking for anything greater than 0. Sitting here wondering why it's not working for 3 damn minutes then I remember this (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/...)
I can't do $variable.count > 0
I have to do $varibale.count -gt 0

I am looking for a better job, to do that I expand my knowledge by learning new stuff after work. I do this to have a better live, but my relatives pulling me down...
My wife complains that I am always at work, even if I tell her I do programming as a hobby and I learn new stuff to get a better paying job.
In contrary my parents always say that I am lazy bum, because If man doesn't work with his muscles, they don't consider this as a real job.2 -
LLVM AND BISON FIX YOUR FUCKING DOCUMENTATIONS
I've been trying the whole quarantine period to make some small Bison and LLVM snippets because I've been planning to make a compiler for my own language. But I haven't been able to make a SINGLE THING WORK because these projects have the WORST DOCUMENTATION I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE FOR AN OSS PROJECT. Seriously, no basic references, no tutorials, no nothing. It's as if they are trying to obscure it all! I'm looking for alternatives now.8 -
Hi dev buddies, need some help, need some feedback... What’s you’re feelings on Drupal? I’ve never used it but have been asked to look for a CMS for the company I work for. It’s a newspaper company looking to get its first CMS and ‘managed’, templated websites. There’s more expensive CMS options on the market, but feel Drupal might be a good place to start?12

This isn't so much of a rant, but it is about interviews.
I have interviews in the coming weeks for internships/work experience with local game studios and software companies
Does anybody have any tips for a newbie to working in the industry. What I should expect from the interview what they might be looking for and so on.
Thanks6 -
Every once in a while you find an awesome Product Manager who makes Dev life amazing... sadly, he’s looking for new work now, anybody need a truly amazing Agile PM at a kick-ass company?
-
So I was looking for an internship online and I came across this. How can someone expect so much from a student? The stipend is only (₹5000) i. e. $70/month.
Most of the companies on this site are basically treating jobs as student internships looking to get work done at cheap rates. -
I was already done with the company that couldn't make up their mind about JS. I got a mail:

Has anyone had any success with implementing a flow based programming system (like node red, but custom)? My work has been looking at it for a couple of months, the POCs up till now have not turned up any major drawbacks.
I am just looking for things to avoid that cannot be read in academic papers about the topic.1 -
Have you ever just needed someone to tell you that your not a worthless developer. I truly love developing but I just don't know how much more time I can spend looking for work doing it. Everyone is telling me that there is so much work out there. They just all fail to recognize that there is only work out there for experienced developers or graduates. I have been in the IT industry for 12 years now with 2 of which focusing on development. Needless to say I'm self-taught and I do everything I can to further myself every day. It just never seems to be enough to get me that in. I have been looking for just over a year now with very little luck. There was a 3 month period that I did manage to lad something but got laid off right after the product went live. I think they lied to be about it being a peppermint position because they had trouble finding a contractor for it. I just need something really anything at this point.

From my last rant, I'm now looking for Jobs.

Anyone know any good free courses to learn programming for a total beginner?
The guy who needs it is looking to work with JavaScript and Node eventually.3 -
So at work we use ASP.NET web forms. Since the .NET Core exists now, and that uses ASP.NET MVC, is it worth looking into that and learning about it? My boss is hesitant to move over for our next project because web forms will go faster because we don't have to learn something new.6

how to find small startups without networking?

I’m looking for a simple tool for Windows, GUI or CLI, doesn’t matter.
It should do the following:
Take a directory and a number as input and randomly move the files in that directory to subdirectories, each containing files up to the provided number.
So, random grouping essentially.
I’ll write it myself if it doesn’t exist, but let’s see if I can save me some work 😆24 -
How many of you actually work on projects on your free time?

My coworker got fired due to budget & not enough work to do (his work is done, they didn't had long term tasks for him). But he is a junior dev (1y prof. experience in IT, 15y prof. experience in total) and he is now interviewing for nearly a month. Nearly all recruiters say that they are looking for someone with 3y prof experience in his field.
Does anyone has advice on how to get a job with as good as no experience?2 -
I'm looking to get a laptop, and I want your opinion on which one to get, because I'm a dev and don't care about whatever most reviews are looking at. Here is what I want from it:
1. I'll be running linux on it
2. I need it to be powerful enough to go through heavy development
3. It has to be decent sized 15" and below
4. It needs to stay cool under light load, under heavy load I've got a good cooling pad
5. Battery is not that important, and discrete graphics are not that important
I will be hooking it up to a keyboard/mouse/monitor setup when at home or work
Any suggestions? I've been looking at lenovo thinkpads for their ruggedness and dependability and Dell laptops as they've been around for a long time. Ultrabooks (like the XPS) are appealing but I don't know how well they deal with heat and thermal throttling under heavy load? -
I'm looking into buying a new laptop. I want something speak and ultrabookish, but dedicated graphics are a must.
Will be mostly for work, so a good CPU and RAM are important, but probably will do some gaming. Battery life and cooling are pretty big too. I've looked at the Aero 15X, the XPS 15, Razer Blade, etc. I just can't decide. Need to get it this year for the the tax deductions for my contracting income. Any thoughts? What's the best one out there?12 -
Looking back I realise I had Lego Mindstorms. That had basic drag and drop programming for the robot. I could say I started there, but really only messed with it for my pretend play. Then I did data entry in HS. Never messed with until my wife made me pick a major so i would stop being a professional student. Started C++ in college. Where I work uses Excel, so I have been messing with the macros using VBA. Currently building websites for another class.

Fuck Threads and fuck multithreading in general.
I've spent the last 2 hours and a half looking for an important error that did my project not work at first execution, and it was all because I did start a side Thread, but forgot to wait until it was done before showing the output of it.
Fucking multithreading...3 -
Why everytime we have meetings with management people, I think these people are so disconnected with their reality, they look so much indulged in their work. Whenever there is a meeting with them I get anxious thinking they might get to know I am a weak developer.
The language is same for everyone, it looks fake and looking at this makes me anxious.
Anyone feels the same? I need help.5 -

I looked over the function a second time, no mention of React anywhere.

Hi All, Long time lurker here...
I made a non serious GIMP version control project at a hackathon years ago but was too busy to really work on it more than a little at a time, mostly because I was still in college. I mostly do academic programming at work now so I have no idea how mainstream or maintainable this is as a webapp, but I finally put it on a Linode just a few days ago for fun so I wanted to share and take any criticism you guys have to offer! (if any of you dabble in graphic design stuff on the side)

As a newbie dev, I'm looking for partners to work together. You know I feel like unmotivated right now for some unknown reasons. So I thought of changing the pace by meeting with some new people who feel the same. By working on some not-real-world-project or silly ideas together, we can learn how to work in collaboration. We can also share some new ideas together!1

I miss the good old days when developers could be developers and rely on DBAs, sysadmins and networkists to do their job well. I miss the days when developers were developing applications, sytems, modules,.. Not troubleshooting ELBs, RDS latencies or building monitoring for servers. -
Well, that is a record. 11 minutes into work and I already want to choke slam whoever wrote this shell script. I am looking for someone older than dirt because they used ` ` instead of $(). My advice would be to have fun with coding and make things that you like. Consider all other job fields. Only work in programming if it makes you fulfilled and gives you good memories looking back. If you do work as a dev, be passionate about making the code and projects beautiful and high quality. Search for mentorship from developers you admire.

The problem is that there are hundreds of them, so if you can write some tips which one shall I go for?
Here is the info about what I need:
1 - I'm a web developer, so later I will move the work there too, capable of running a web server.
2 - I'm NOT looking for windows likeness or easiness, I'm looking for a distro which will help me the most to understand how it works in general, the file system, and the command line.5 -

So there was this position in our college for part time programming/building a project. Being university students looking for part time work a lot of us applied there.
Finally the person that was selected among all of us was the person who does no work and is completely useless. If you ask her to do something she despite taking a long time doesn't produce any output.
So my question is what did the interviewers see in her that they selected her despite multiple way better people applying.4 -

What would you do? Finished a mobile app project for a contract. Normally, I'd be off looking for another app project to work on, but the company I'm at asked me to write documents for an unrelated project. I hate writing docs, but I am billing $80/hr
Not near enough info to do much of any documentation , so waiting on answers. In the meanwhile, my email and phone are blowing up from recruiters looking for mobile app devs.
I can either work with recruiters to find a job I love or spend time muddling through creating documentation with little or no info.
What would you do? Collect a paycheck for shit you hate doing? Or just spend the time looking for something you do like to do? -

i think most of my interests/hobbies end up being useful at some point at work, that's why i usually try out a lot of different things. i think two major ones have been language and design, there are concepts in both that help a lot in coding. I've been particularly interested in semiotics, which is a total trip, but it's very worth looking into for any type of science.

Hi, I'm a junior developer who's looking for his first front end job.
I have just finished my 8 months internship as a front end developer in a startup in Paris.
Now I have some opportunities which allows me to work in Paris, Luxembourg or Shangai.
I speak English French and Chinese.
I hesitate a lot now, if you are me, which city you will choose to get your first job there, and why?1 -
Be me.
Writing a java class for uni work, that'll eventually run on android.
I get kicks from making functions work using as few steps as possible, using minimal code.
Explain to someone how I'm doing it.
I learn that loops and the rest of it generate more code and take longer than unwrapping the loop and writing every case manually.
Shit ffs I spend hours making my code more concise :(
Then, I'm told the recursive method I'm using for checking for a win is too complicated, that I shouldn't start looking for a win from the last counter I placed, but should scan the WHOLE board for a win in every angle.
Eat my food, open my beer, pet my dog, trundle off back to work. -

Looking for some guidance. I am thinking of doing freelance work on the side, but am a little hesitant when I think about contracts, closing out the projects, and getting paid. I even see it with my company where clients keep asking for little things here and there and it adds up to a lot of extra work and refusal to pay until this out of scope work is done. Do you guys have any tools or other suggestions that can help protect me as the developer in a freelance project?
Also, a good PM tool would be helpful too. I'm used to Trello, but it tends to get cluttered real fast.4 -

I want to dive into Python, but I read that python 2 won't be maintained by 2020. Should I pickup Python 3 or work with Python 2?
Slight background notice: I am a developer right now. I swap between Java and Javascript for most of my job. I'm familiar with the fundamentals of programming and am just looking for a language to automate some tasks or just explore. Python looks lightweight and open to a lot of potential projects, like AI (which I guarantee will take a while for me to grasp).5 -
Im going to my first internship interview as computer engineering tomorrow. it's a consulting company that works with FPGA development, im nervous because I would really like to work with it!
Q: are there some tips on interviews with smaller development companies? What are they looking for in a developer? What should I research beforehand?2 -
Has anyone else installed the latest beta for Xcode on an iMac and found fuck all of the iPhone simulators work? Or have I done the impossible on a mac and messed up something on the install (quite how I'd have achieved it I don't know, and to be honest I can't be fucked looking through the .log files)

I have just started working fresh out of college and don't have much experience in job hunting. But I will share what worked for me when I was in college looking for jobs.
In my opinion these are the top three qualities which we must develop while hunting a dev job.
1. Insane focus : work hard. Learn stuff. Complete lessons, projects. Do not deviate from the end goal, and work towards it.
2. Resilience : Don't lose heart over few bad interviews. Keep on trying with the same zeal.
3. Incorporate feedbacks. Don't be stubborn and arrogant. Look out for learning opportunities from any circumstance.
Best of luck -
Looking for speech-to-text library python for a home automation project. SpeechRecognition doesn't really work out for me and Google won't give me any other good alternatives. Thanks!3

Curious about the feedback I'll get from everyone here.
We are looking for a email replacement like slack that may also have a wiki component. So far Quip is at the top I think.
Also the idea of cross platform development is being floated and I've been looking at Xamarin and QT.
Does anybody work with these or similar solutions?3 -
Which development standards and coding styles would you recommend in a development team? My colleague @jacoKotze and I are starting to get larger projects at work and 2 more developers soon (juniors with little to no experience), so we'll need some coherence soon.
Tabs v spaces is more of a joke, looking for opinions on other things please.12 -
Been struggling to work recently because I've been looking for the perfect (irl) desktop setup. Clean surfaces, minimal clutter, etc.
Today I finally broje the back of my uni work... in bed... under a duvet.
Sometimes you have to just start bashing on the keyboard when you feel comfortable. -
Looking for a good IRC channel to have open during work, to ask questions and help people too. Maybe some devRant IRC?1

I am looking for an alternative to Heroku where I can push and test my research and referencing application. I have been using Heroku for developing and testing my applications but I am wondering if there are other similar platforms with more streamlined and advanced features and functions. I am not saying that Heroku is bad. On the contrary, I believe that they are doing a great job. I am just curious if there are other better platforms that could make my work easier and enjoyable.3

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to learn to create apps with Android Studio and Swift5. However, my current laptop is not okay to work with its 4 GB RAM.
My question is, i am planning to buy a MacBook Air I5 8GB RAM 256 GB SSD. Do you think it is enough for me to learn coding in the first place and create apps?
Let me also state the fact that additional RAMs like 16 GB and bigger SSD size are really expensive in my country. So i’m looking for something that can work Swift and Android Studio (with Emulator) with no problem.
It would be great to hear from you about your experiences and advices.
Cheers!13 -
After leaving my internship job to try out pre-med, getting to the end of pre-med, and studying for the MCAT for months, I am now getting married in May and looking for an apartment, so nixing the medical school idea...
Trying to get my old job back, was absolutely *lovely* to see that SCCM (the abusive father that it is, I knew how to work with him) is now getting discontinued? Man.
Might just bumrush these IT certs and see what happens. At least I know LaTeX now. -
For me, at work, it's very important to have an inspiring figure with whom I can interact and in lucky cases, get to work with.
I recently changed companies and in my previous company, inspiring people were left, so left.
Now in my new company, I have met 5 6 people and not finding anyone inspiring enough, everyone is young, I am also only 27 but still I'm an old soul. My manager is young and he's chill person but I'm not at all inspired by him I don't think he tries to charm anyone anyway. All other developers too in the team are just meh. Product is good, so I'm looking for work but losing the motivation to do good and better each day as I don't have anyone I want to become like.

I no longer have commercial licenses for Visual Studio at home.
I'm looking at getting VS Code. I can keep support for C#, and also do any HTML5 and PHP here. It looks promising because it is free, open source, and uses an environment I'm already familiar with. Projects I work on at home ate usually single developer projects.
Thoughts?1 -

Sorry for the !rant...
Hi gals&guys I am looking for a new collegue (preferably from Hungary) to work with me. When I say collegue I mean a front-en dev/sitebuilder. The company is a new agency with 4 partners (and growing fast) with 1 being our investor too. I am looking here because I think anyone here who "applies" would be a perfect match. Interested? Have a question? Put a comment and will discuss. -
I get highly sceptical of a company when they need external garbage tier recruiters to find people who want to develop, HIGHLY TECHNICAL AVIATION SYSTEMS AND FLIGHT SIMULATORS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THIS SHOULD SELL IT SELF. PEOPLE SHOULD BE FLOCKING. PUN INTEDED EVEN.
I also hate recruiters. No, I don't want to leave my job. And, are you stupid? You are not looking for someone with a BsSc. You are looking for someone with a MsSc, or am I just that fucking amazing that I don't need as much education to be considered? 😠😠😠😠😠😠😠
Aaaaaaaaaaah. Stop. It. I'm not looking for work.1 -
Once upon a time I worked for a startup in school as one of two developers.
I learned many technologies in this role. I built massive front end systems, debugged back end systems. They even gave me a little section on their site that was all about me and giving me credit for me work. The only actual employee was the "CEO, owner, and designer". A team of three in total.
Inevitably the company went under but the site remains. A skeleton of a dead dream. The CEO took my name and info off their website and took credit for all the work I put months into. I was never paid, never giving any recognition whatsoever for the work I did.
I'm not looking for an award or anything like that, but like bro?!?? I built your companies interface for free and you throw me out like trash.
Wtf is being a developer?!?4 -

I am now looking for a new job. My current work environment is everything wrong with IT and more. And to be honest I learned a lot from that. I am looking for a position where I can participate in defining and healthy working culture in IT. Something that makes me worry about people not tools. To be honest I have no idea what position should I apply for. If you have an idea or a recommendation of what I should be looking for, that would be of great help.2

Hi,
looking for a bit of help.
Has anyone a recommended tutorial / introduction to .NET development, TFS and Visual Studio?
And - for later - a good reference for the datatypes / advanced topics / build system?
I'm starting to work on a Windows only DLL plugin and quite frankly - I'm lost.
TFS and Visual Studio is new to me and feels awkward...
And thx to experience I can understand most parts of code but the build system is unknown to me.
And a lot of the data types .NET has ...
Thanks in advance!4 -
How many hours do you program each day? How many hours do you program until you make a break?
I am looking for a way to work efficiently and healthily.6 -
Interviewing is a skill. Technical interviewing is a skill related to but not totally based on coding knowledge. You need to flex this muscle.
Try mock coding interviews with friends. Set up interviews at places you don't necessarily want to work at. Take coding interviews even when you're not looking for a job. -
Sure am glad they decided to take a break for 20 years from allowing people to learn and to work on their own shit.
So great for example we have a cheapo government, that won;t invest money into people to learn things like the underlying lowlevel aspects of the kernel and an fbi office like that in philadelphia that would rather drug the adherent and let them wake up somewhere else, twice.
if i were them i'd be looking at said formerly blond long haired 40 something bitch manning that post. -

Hey Devs!,
I've been lurking for a bit and had a question what dev/coding skills should I be looking at to be able to move up? I currently do support for large cluster machines but not full admin work. I want to move to a more sysadmin type position but my coding/scripting is not the strongest and wanted to hear your thoughts -

I'm trying to learn to touch type for probably the 5th time and I really want to get a mechanical keyboard to use at work and home.
I'm looking at the cheaper options on Amazon, up to £50. I'm not sure which switch type is best, whether I should be fitting o-rings to keep colleagues happy or whether I'm just over thinking this whole thing.

TL;DR
I'm looking for a good cloud based python IDE. Let's hear suggestions...
Full Story
My employer provides me with a MacBook to use at work, however they use a custom OS X image that has whatever security configuration they decided was essential. Something about the configuration prevents me from running third party Python packages.
During those times that I'm "waiting for work things to compile", I'd love to tinker with a little Python project I'm messing with. Does anyone have any suggestions on cloud based IDEs for Python?
Yes I've Googled it, plenty of results. But anyone have suggestions based on their own user experience?
Thanks ahead of time!6 -
Those who are Software Engineers in the Bay Area or other places with high cost of living (COL), do you think living in that area is worth it? Or would you rather work remote somewhere that's cheaper even if that means taking a slight pay cut?
I was born and raised in the Bay Area and want to own a home. The Peninsula is just so fucking expensive. No way I want to shell out 500k for a condo with a $500 a month HOA fee. What gives? I'm not looking to make money on a home I'm looking to have a place I can call my own.1 -
How did you decide what you wanted to do with your career? I'm fresh out of uni and am looking for work but have no idea what roles or languages or software types I want to work in, only a vague idea of stuff I don't want and a vague idea of what could be nice. I'm also at a bit of a crossroads because I've applied to multiple very different jobs and have no idea which one to accept if multiple offer me a job (given that there weren't any red flags when interviewing).1

Had an old classon "smart" Helmet(Brooklyness). App does work, company is looking dead. Reverse enginnered the app(android "beyong - micromobity"), quite simple if you have the apk file on hand. The fucker is kotlin which is compiled to Java, and uses AWS for User management(don't want it) and its data, even if a mobile is already required as relay to get the video files off the helmet into the cloud.
Never worked in kotlin and java, and never want to work in it ever again.2
