Today I was talking to my manager about html and css.
As i was explaining certain things about the structure of the files and the naming conventions for the css classes I mentioned the body of the document.....but got...er...distracted...yes distracted...and said booty instead of body.
She started laughing and I made a tomato look pale because of how red I got. I zipped my hoodie all the way up and talked from the hood hole around my face.
Best solution ever.5 -

Five US quarters are about 1oz in weight and should hold down most keys on most keyboards.
I knew this because we had an error on a server with a pop up window that was only "ok". We couldn't kill the process because critical so we left a stack of change on enter until it it was done running and we could leave for the night.3 -

I just made my own implementation of a scraper for NASA's Pic of the Day. It should have automagically changed my wallpaper at 4 AM to the new pic of the day.
Today's "pic of the day" is a video. It broke my shit.... So much for the excitement of seeing my automation work.4 -
Decided to spend my weekend on a little side project that I thought I could finish quickly.
Not only does my code not work, but what I wrote is so horrible that I'm honestly ashamed. Its like the despicable porn that you sometimes end up watching and the horror of realizing what the hell you just watched after you finish - I thought my code was good, but really, it was trash.
Before I started writing I though to myself, "I'll finish this project and then I'll upload it to my Github to expand my repository", but now I cringe at the thought of someone else reviewing this pile of shit I call my code.
It's 2 am here in Israel. I know I should go to sleep, but I'll just stare at the ceiling, feeling unproductive because everything I did today is literally worthless.
How the fuck do I justify this shit to myself? Calling this a "learning experience" feels like a fucking joke.
Honestly, I don't know why I chose Python to do OOP when Kotlin would have served me much better.
But, there's always tomorrow, isn't there?2 -
First day of new year, first day of relaxing until my new job starts .. Plan to travel and not code for awhile!2

You asked for it--here it is.
It was a regular day in November--I was taking my dog out for a walk. We were walking past an elementary school when my dog started barking at a rock. I went to have a closer look at the rock when suddenly it vanished into thin air. "How strange" I quietly thought to myself, called out to my dog and carried on walking.
The next day at around the same time, at the very same place--next to the elementary school, my dog started barking at a log which lied in the exact same spot as the rock had occupied the day before. I did the same as I had done a day earlier--walked up to the log to check it out, but it vanished into thin air. We kept on walking.
The third day I decided we'd pick another route. This day, nothing interesting happened.
The fourth day went the same as the third.
The fifth day, went the same as the fourth.
On the sixth day, God was almost done with his works, for that reason we celebrated by going to the movies--me and my dog. To be fair, the only interesting thing that happened on that day was the movie, which was shit.
On the eight day when I got out of my bed I fell, broke my neck and died. And that's when I ate my code to make it shorter.undefined don't try this at home kids egypt mona lisa nuclear power struggle irrelevant tags detonation eating code5 -
How long do my fellow devRanters spend per day coding? I will spend about 10 hours per day 6/7 days per week.
I ask this because I'm wondering if I need to re-balance my life choices. I took a whole day off
over the weekend and ended up feeling more rejuvenated coming back to my code this Monday.15 -
I've spent my entire day at work planning my next home project. Probably the most productive day I've had at this company!

My first day of my internship. I was confident in my abilities to develop, but wow. I was totally put in place after the first day. I realized that I didn't know as much as I thought. Almost wanted to change career paths. I'm thankful for that day because it really made me push on and become a better person and programmer!

TD;DR: I have school instead of vacation but 5 hours of spare time. I got my laptop with me and I'll work in school.
I didn't want to take part of the course-trip with the 12th graders (my course sucks, there are too many assholes for the neutral people to compensate). After speaking with the director, and the only condition was to tell the course why. I did deliver them a nicely put "fuck you, you bullied my only friend out of this school" and now is the time where I visit the 11-graders while the other 12-ers are on "school vacation".
I got a "new" plan for the courses I should visit. Today, Wednesday, I have 5 FUCKING FREE HOURS IN A ROW. Oh yes, baby, the teacher generating the plan hates me as well. (He really does but it's probably just unlucky not his fault).
So today, I decided, I would take my heavy-ass laptop with me, in a laptop bag, which doesn't fit into the school bag I have and my laptop doesn't fully fit in the laptop bag as well (sticks out), that's the perks of having a laptop!!
— so I can work on my (I wanna say this once in my life without being a professional) "CLIENTS PROJECT" - the funny thing is that the client is a (really fucking good but small) advertising agency and too lazy to design their own website. Since I had my internship, they know how hard I *can* work even without being payed. Now they do wanna pay me but that's another story.
I'm on the bus and I have this monster of a bag which isn't lighter than a freaking huge bag of rice and I'm so fucking excited for this day. The library is my best friend. Hopyfully I'm going to find a socket for power..
Sorry for so many commas, I'm german. :D3 -
Yeah..finally some improvement.
my code is throwing Internal Server error exception now, two days back it was showing Unknown Exception.

Last day at my current job.
It feels like my soul has left but my body is trapped in the office until the end of the day 😂2 -
My complete day consists out of waiting for CircleCI. Why the hell is it slow af today?
I feel like playing fuckin Hay Day and am waiting for my carrots to sprout. -
So far I've spent about half my day waiting for my computer to respond (cpu @ 100%). Can't tell if this is a good day, or bad day.
What a waste of company resources/time. At least I'm being paid well to sit and twiddle my thumbs daily as this is a daily occurrence.10 -
It never ceases to amaze me how my day runs perfectly smooth and then 1 fucking person knocks in and ruins my whole day.....3

(Note: I got a bit carried away while writing this, so the end result is a lot longer than I expected. Apologies for the long post!)
The beginning of my programming journey started with a book.
This was back in 7th grade. I had some basic exposure to BASIC (pun maybe intended?) from our school curriculum, but it was nothing too interesting as our teachers never really treated it as anything important. They would stress a lot on those Microsoft Office chapters (yes, we actually studied Microsoft Office as part of our computer science course at school) and mostly ignore the programming chapters because I dare say many of them struggled with it themselves. So although I had been exposed to *some* programming, it was mostly memorizing the syntax without actually understanding what was going on.
Then one day there was this book fair thing going on at this local Carrefour (for those of you who've no idea, it's a pretty famous hypermarket chain) in this mall, and for some reason my mother and I were in that mall on that day. Now the interesting thing is that this usually never happens -- I usually visit malls with my dad or my friends, this is the only instance I remember where I had actually visited one with just my mom. This turned out to be fortuitous. My father is the kind of person who's generally not amenable to any kind of extraneous shopping requests. My mother, on the other hand, was and remains pliable.
So I basically saw this book -- Sams' Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours -- being sold at half price. I vaguely remembered having read somewhere that JavaScript is a good introductory programming language (and it helped that this was the time when I was getting into a Google-craze -- I basically saw some photos of Google Zurich and went all HOLY SHIT THAT'S WHERE I NEED TO WORK WHEN I GROW UP (for those of you who haven't seen it, I recommend googling it. That office is the bomb) -- and I'd also read that you need programming skills to join Google). So I begged and begged my mum to buy that book, and thankfully she did.
Back home I returned with my new prize under my arm. Dad took one look at it and scoffed that I'll never actually use it. Pretty much entirely out of spite (to prove him wrong), I attacked the book with a zeal. I still remember how I felt when I wrote my very first JavaScript program (printing the current system date in an h1 tag) and marveling at the output. I guess that was when something struck -- the realization that this was probably what I wanted to do in life.
Fast forward to today, and I've never looked back and wondered what it would be like to have done something else.
PS: for all you beginners out there, JavaScript is a horrible language. Please start with something like Python. Also there are better resources than Sams' Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours available, that I just didn't know of back then. I'd recommend Eloquent JavaScript any day. -
I love my job,
this is how my normal day goes:
me: *turns on computer*
computer: Good morning, erandria. What will your first sequence of the day be? -
statics: just because you can, doesn't necessarily mean you should. now I get to spend my day cursing the guy who hired me 4 years ago, and who was fired 2 years ago, for his turrible design choices.1
-
tried fixing push notifications in an app I'm working on, only to find out at the end of the day that Apple's sandbox was down all day..
What a waste of my day -
One of the nice bonus things about having 2+ kids is a father's/mother's day. A day off every month at the day of my choice.
Aahhh, finally a calm day to spend with my fam
Do other countries also have this?5 -
My last day before vacation and I'm assigned a task without specs which could not be done in 1 day. I don't know what I'm doing and I feel very sorry for my colleague who covers me during my vacation.1

Today is my happiest day... I found two of my rants (Internet Explorer, God Backup) in top rands of the day....

Here we go again.
It's 21.15, on my day off. I've been working all day. Client isn't responding, but we're supposed to submit apps for review again.
This is what my life has become.3 -
How is everyone handling their day job lately? I'm feeling pretty safe about my position, but my day-to-day is definitely suffering as my mind wanders off.
Cost of living crisis, trying to have a social life, impending fatherhood, all while trying to do good work and improve my knowledge. Not easy.3 -

Good day to all of you, ranter! 👍😁 -
Currently looking into switching from Windows to Linux as my main day to day OS (at least for development). What distros do you recommend based on my entire Linux experience being a RasPi?4

Last day working for my current employer. New job from Monday.
Even pinging Google loses 3/4 of packets. New Cisco router.
Yeah, I'm glad it's my last day here. -
Just set up gulp for the first time... Now I'm just making stupid changes to see everything compile and reload the browser. What an Easter treat :D1
-
Stayed up doing all the projects for my CS class the day before the last day of classes. It was simultaneously worth it and not worth it

Each day waiting for others to deliever means one day less for me to do my work. Deadline still stands. Sigh.

Preface: As it was unpaid labor I won't count my school-internship in a games resell shop in which I was ordered to "program" a BDSM-Shop with MS Frontpage.
My first paid gig was back in 2006. I got booked to write the website of a new company by friends of the family. The problem was that the gig had to happen ~600km away from my home town. Back in 2006 it was far from common to own a laptop for young folks, which is why I packed my Pentium 4 HT "powerhouse" tower, my 15" TFT monitor, keyboard and mouse into a suitcase and took a bus. I not only had to write the website, but had to do all the Frontend and Design as well and was paid 400€. Hahaha what a deal. They are still using my logo btw.
Anyhow... I was like 17yo and the work experience was more valuable then the money anyways. Plus at the time 400€ weren't a bad payment either. After that it took 2 more years and half a dozen of boring jobs until I started earning money with programming again. I can't understand why I haven't started programming earlier. Especially considering the wage gap between the jobs I did and potential programming jobs. Guess you're always smarter afterwards. -
The reason I get unproductive in my day off is clearly because.
Whatever the fuck I do wont matter and wont be done in just two day1 -
Since the day I started reading about C++ in my primary grades, my parents stopped questioning my career; I never stopped since that day.

okay so on my first day
day with all the login creds to the system I'm supposed to work on decides not to show up -
I lost half my day yesterday because stakeholders made a change to one of the systems that I need. I noticed my dev environment could not longer authenticate into the system. That usually happens when there’s a “refresh” of that system. Meaning that someone copied the production instance over to the staging one, which wiped out my user credentials. One stakeholder thought he had to notify me AFTER the system refresh and not before. Another stakeholder thought it was my task to restore my user. Nope, I’m only a user for this system. I’m not responsible for any maintenance. They weren’t understanding what they had to do even after I sent them messages saying that I can no longer authenticate and I need them to check my username and password are active and correct for the staging instance.
-
Probably fixing an error, not really knowing because it can't be reproduced in your shitty dev environment, push to production and just enjoy, my day every day...
-
What do I do on my day off? I write a Slack-Twilio integration so I can send text messages from my laptop. (Yeah, iMessage on the Macbook works too, but that's not the number I wanted to text from.)3
