Reading devRant feed is so fucking hard nowadays. Every other rant is about Windows rebooting, Google being evil, Quantum beating Chrome, M$ users being cunts and all these fanboy shits.
Fucking hell. Write some actual code and rant about some solid problems rather than being a stupid fanboy.12 -
To all developers who think "I don't need to delete that one 1KB temp file"
FUCK.YOU.
You are not the only garbage developer who does not clean his shit up. The reason we need TERA FUCKING BYTE storage devices nowadays is because you incompetent shit heads have no idea how an application has to properly work. A temp file is not there to exist for ever. Most of the code I write nowadays is for GPUs using a dialect of C. Anyways, due to the hardware of GPUs there is no convenient debugger and you can't just print to console neither.
Most bugs are solved staring at the code and using pen and paper.
I guess one could call that a quirk.11 -
Companies can't use free software?
Well, I just forced everyone to use Nextcloud instead of Dropbox and Google Drive. People did not like it as first but the quickly realized how good it was.
We also moved from skype, teams and slack to matrix.
I am glad that matrix-synapse is so easy to install nowadays!18 -
Not sure what triggers me more:
a) the fact that nowadays no one can type/spell without auto-correct
b) that this passed code review
c) that no one corrected it in 12 months since it's been committed23 -
Juniors nowadays are so lazy.

Lecturer talking about a great, strong technology whole 2 hours, in the end of lecture he said :
"But this technology is too old to use nowadays."5 -
Last year I applied for a similar position to that I have now (Front-end Dev), but with a higher salary and less responsibility.
The interview went fairly well I thought, but I was also given a short written exam, where I was supposed to point out errors in the code provided. I'm certain I got everything right but I took too long (about 20 minutes for 20 questions) and they got inpatient pressing me several times.
My excuse was that I haven't used a pen in about 3 years. My hand didn't know what was happening! Who even writes anything anymore nowadays?!6 -

I don't know what Google's design team has taken for drugs lately, but I want some!!
First, replacement of the blobs into this trash that they call emoji nowadays. 10-20 years ago we called it the crap stickers from MSN.
Next, Android Pie would look like iOS, but in the most grotesque way possible.
And now it's creeping into the apps.. Google Play, YouTube, Messaging, …
It all looks so.. white, and round, and childish. What happened to sharp corners, using all the screen real estate, and.. those colors?! God I can't stand how white the Google apps are starting to look. But I know the solution. I'll accuse Google of being RACIST!! Because black people would be so offended by the lack of dark themes. GOOGLE, YOU PATRIARCHIC, NON-INCLUSIVE, RACISTIC A-HOLES!!! CHANGE YOUR COLORS NOW!!!
I can see how that could actually work nowadays 🙃9 -
WTF is going on in web development nowadays that makes people ask me to compile C# projects to Electron?
Let that sink. I'm being asked to compile a C# project that can run as a beautifully integrated seamless *native* and lightning fast application... to JS so it would run as a *website* in the Electron *browser*. Am I the only one seeing how much cancer that is?10 -
I feel like everyone likes material design nowadays - am I the only one who just doesn't think it looks very good?10

Javascript! What a fucking horrible language it is.
I just wonder why this fucking language became this popular nowadays just performance is not a good reason to use this fucking language everywhere.13 -
So a friend approached me about joining an internship. Said you'll learn php, js , jquery and bootstrap. I'm like okay I'm already learning this stuff, cool but is there a stipend or something? She says no but I'll have to pay 5000₹ (72$).
I said "ni🅱🅱a if you're paying, that's not sex that's prostitution" and noped the fuck outta there.
Its just sad how many students with no skills are actually paying to get an internship nowadays.13 -

If first compiler was compiled by humans, now compilers are compiled using compilers. Then the first chicken didn't come from egg, but something superior. Nowadays we just see eggs turning into chicken, but the origins of chickens isn't related to eggs at all.

I'm not really keen in relying too much on JavaScript to render a properly functioning web page. HTML and CSS is now than good enough for it nowadays.
But if due to technical limitations, i have to use JavaScript, I make sure to not use jquery.

Does anyone feel overwhelmed by all the new technologies? It's like every developer nowadays code in JS, and knows ES6, React, webpack, babel by heart. I have been working in Java for less than a decade and sometimes feel like I can't catch up. Even in Java ecosystem there is now Scala, Groovy, Gradle, Kotlin... Not to mention other languages like Python, Swift... How do you guys have time to pick up everything?? 😖7

I am one of those individuals who can't understand a word someone is saying to me if there is any loud background noise - e.g. other people talking near me. … follow style guides for every language;
… meet impossible deadlines;
… meet impossible management/customer/end user expectations;
… read through terrible code others made;
… read through terrible documentation others made;
… make terrible documentation themselves;
… fight with the IDE;
… fight with the build tools;

… debug code written at 2am (by themselves AND others);

I think this a perfect anecdote of where tech is going nowadays:
I moved my bowels on one of those high-tech Japanese toilets: it allowed you to control the seat temperature, cleaned your butt with spray (with an additional "ladies" mode), had several modes of flushing (1, 2, and "eco"), automatically lifted and closed the lid, played some music for you, had a remote controller for you to flush your shit at a distance.
But, guess what, IT DIDN'T FLUSH SHIT. It pathetically trying to flush my shit with 1000 different kinds of puny jets and draining modes but my heap of shit always bounced back because its flush was so weak that it couldn't push it.
I don't care if the seat warmer went out of control and burned my ass or if the butt cleaning jet didn't reach my anus,
JUST DO WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO AND FLUSH MY SHIT.5 -

I hate backendphobia! It feels like so common nowadays. People scare other people with backend being too hard and stuff, and that feeling of scariness is something that infects lot of people. Please stop fearing the backend!
Yes, some backend stuff can be hard, but there's no good reason to fear it. I just hate it when I go to a new team and they all seem to be backendphobics idiots. I've build enough backends to not give in to the fear, pls stop scaring people.11 -

Some intellect at Apple thought it would be helpful for macOS to reopen all my previous applications at once after restarting from an improper shutdown. Thank God it's much less annoying nowadays due to SSD load times.
The worst was when Safari was the cause, so Apple reopened it to the same page, and it crashed again. 👏👏2 -
How did you learn to program ?.
I read E-books to get the basic knowledge and then I would go through a open source PHP project and rebuild it using the look cover right check technique.
Then on top of that I watched YouTube tutorials.
How did you learn ?.
I never went to college or further eduction as I seem to do really well at self teaching plus there is so much info on google nowadays.12 -

Today i was cleaning my laptop and on right side of it i suddenly touched a button... !!!

Decided to try keepass again and the combination of it all nowadays is just (nearly) perfect:
- Keepass2
- KeepassXC Browser extension (the only reason for "nearly" since NatMsg tries to emulate keepassxc but sometimes fails)
- KeePassNatMsg
- Syncthing
- Keepass2Android
There's tons of more things to discover still, but that already gave me a much easier (especially backups wise) and plugin setup than what I had before with bitwarden!
Syncthing also _just works_ (not like it used to be) which makes me all the time question what's wrong with it haha12 -

Just spent literally six hours trying to get my aunt's enterprise-grade 20 mb fiber optic Internet back on tracks.
Two hours trying to reach the technical support, two hours to explain that I was "unexpectedly" hung up by the previous attendant, and honest to hell, two more hours trying to explain what "latency" is.

There was a time when backend engineers used to make fun of frontenders and tell them 'you arent a real software engineer', nowadays frontend is getting so complex and cool that even backenders are now starting to learn frontend. Why arePC cases so damn useless and ugly nowadays. It's either a cheapo metal box with perforation on the side panel (why?!), Or a decent one with filters but also with a shitty and useless glass panel formo reason.
Why can't cases be just functional metal boxes with filters? Why all that useless shit?30 -
Have you ever been interrupted because a marketing workmate had a friend on the phone who needed advice on a WordPress hosting, and wanted your advice right now?

I still remember when I was 8 years old and used to use "position:absolute"everywhere and use top and z-index to hardcodedly place my elements in my old web projects. I used a lot of <br> and padding + margin were not familiar words to me.
Somehow these projects were responsive, too. Strange times.
Nowadays I avoid "position:absolute", z-index and <br>s like the plague lol5 -
Found this beautiful piece of code, that I wrote apparently a year ago .... oh my 😂 🤦♂ 😅
If I could travel back in time, I would would slap myself for doing this. Although I remember, why I did this, because of many min()/max() operations that I needed. I wanted to keep the code, so that I would know, which code piece belonged to which part, but man ... is that badly written! Nowadays with Clean Code style, I would certainly do it differently.7 -
I miss the old steam sales where you could bag some really good deals if you just payed some attention. Nowadays though they just develop some rinse and repeat novel game, event or something and the deals are predictable. Max 50% if the game still got some steam (like stardew Valley) and 66-90 if the game is fading into obscurity (Turing Test)

How is it a thing that developing a desktop app nowadays requires an enormous amount of RAM? I stared working on an electron project and the whole thing takes up 3-4 GB of RAM when running, and that does not factor in my IDE or anything else.
But the packaged app does not go over 400mb, although we have had memory leaks in the past10 -

Still making art nowadays. :P

I like to code as a hobby as well as do it as a day job so it surprises me quite alot when people get all funny about me coding outside of work/uni. Most students are so fucking stupid nowadays and they don't like to read or research or learn. But I'm the anomaly. Ok guys. No. Apple made them. They are really good and extremely comfortable. They are rare nowadays but here in Russia I just bought brand new pair for just $50. They sound awesome.
I listened to JH Layla and everything by Noble Audio. This forgotten apple earbuds still sound awesome.

I'm frustrated with an abundance of different *Ops we're having right now. You can spell a random word followed by "Ops", and it's probably a thing. I get that Ops people in general are important but when there is stuff like GitOps, MLOps, FinOps, it gets confusing pretty damn fast. There's no value in all these titles besides "duh" usually, since Ops are just Ops in most situations. They kinda can slap a tracing tool or two on top of your code base but in general they just do Kubernetes (with whatever's hip like Jaeger, etc.) nowadays and that's it. Hell, even "DevOps Engineers", for a majority of cases you'll encounter, are basically just Ops with a misleading prefix since it's just a way people call them nowadays for whatever reason.3

Typical interview response from employers nowadays on a candidate's tech skills:
"We don't have the budget to teach someone how to work with the technology. We expect from you that you are already an expert and you need no guidance. We have neither time nor money for slowdowns. We are under pressure to deliver"
Back in the days "I'm willing to learn" used to be of value, but things have changed.9 -
Just needed a good looking material os datepicker - ended up wrestling with react, webpack, npm and gulp. 3 hours later, ta-da, I have a datepicker! webdesign nowadays...

What exactly makes you a Full Stack Developer nowadays? It's one of the big buzz words employers seem to use9

After 10 years of living a developers life, nowadays if someone appreciates my work, I look for sarcasm or hidden motive in it.
Why appreciate me, I'm anyways expected to do a great job. -
Need some advice, which charging model is most beneficial nowadays? (for a mobile game):
1. Pay for full app
2. Free download and in-app purchase(s)
3. Free download and ads (pay to remove?)

I hate how React is used almost everywhere nowadays. Especially when single-page applications are used for purposes that don't actually benefit from them.
Perhaps I'm just old-fashioned, but I want websites to work even with client-side JS disabled. At least sites like Amazon don't rely on it, and work just fine. Progressive enhancement is the way to go.4 -
It's been long time that I use the JavaScript blocker add-on by default, and I pretty much get accustomed to see and perceive the web as broken styling trash for most of the times.
And this broken state(on non-SPA websites) isn't even justified because CSS has never been as powerful as nowadays. So... WTF?
On my side, I never let the absence of JavaScript ruin the template/style of a webpage u_u12 -
Developer these days are more and more required to become language agnostic. I just wondering nowadays so many job posted looking for "fcking fullstack devs". It sound to me like "we need a b!tch that we can fcuk with anystyle, anytime, anywhere and paid once" #nooffense2

Fuck Android Studio updates. Why you morons call it a "STABLE" update when its clearly not? -_-
You guys ruined the layout editor -_- But you guys also left no way to use the older version nowadays.
Fuck you Google!!!

Long days back it was time taking to hack wifi password using coding on Linux kali ,by using few lines of codes etc,,
Nowadays Linux's kali's fern wifi cracker is too easy to use instead of using lines of code.
LOVE TO USE LINUX KALI4 -
Usually spyware had to be installed maliciously or without the victim knowing, but nowadays people fucking use it voluntarily WTF. Bitmoji you fucktwit. Everyone sees where you are, what music you listen to and the users (at least the ones I know) even promote it like it is something good
wat is up with people2 -
Uni nowadays be like:
Lecturer says everyone should come up with an idea, find out how much it costs, figure out the competition, write a business plan, find out the development costs and indicate your value proposition. Best idea gets an A.
This is more like trading an A for a potential billion dollar idea.2 -
JS' array function forEach. Why. Why does it exist? How is a function with a callback better than a freaking simple language feature like for of? If I recall correctly, forEach is older than for of, but people still use it nowadays, and too frequently...
Hate it, definitely.
Also, talking about enumeration in JS, Object's "static" method entries. I can't see how it can't be an instance method. Same for keys and values, but I usually don't care about them.12 -
As a Brazilian we are taught early in school that the government postal service is one of the best in the world.
It took the stickers more than a month to get here.
This is a rant and a thanks to @dfox
I've been absent but that's because I'm not getting as frustrated nowadays, that's because I know someone in devrant is going through something worse than I am1 -
Need advice.
So the class I TA is learning how to use heroku for website testing. It is going up on fire because of a shit tonne of errors everywhere. The professor is adamant heroku is what is used nowadays for testing (over using FTP) so we will have to help 200+ people troubleshoot without knowing much ourselves.
My question is what are some other modern website testing mechanisms? Preferably some that have retard proofing in them.3 -
When I have started working as engineer, coworkers addressed to me as a programmer or software developer. It was irritating since I am an electrical engineering and those days I didn't have much respect for computer science. Nowadays I know how hard is this field, since I have to define and code my soft, and I am proud if someone call me software developer or programmer

To all my people who don’t like to code emails (the sane people): there is MJML. It’s an easy, quick and overall the best way to create emails nowadays. You won’t need to learn quirks, you can learn MJML in a day and make pretty much any email you need.
There’s even a vscode live preview plugin, don’t know about other ides though but I’m sure there is something.
LONG LIVE MJML4 -

I swear Raspberry Pi's whole thing used to be that it's this cool cheap small computer you can play with and use for small projects because it practically cost nothing.
Nowadays it's literally cheaper to buy an actual small/old computer than the Pi with all the dongles and the cables and addons.
What is even the use of it anymore?
And it's not like the Orange Pi is *much* cheaper either.7 -
Got bit by a hacked repo. It was compromised for all of like 30-some seconds. No intrusions, but now I can't set my root password (passwd goes "oh, yeah, we got this" then it does... nothing...) and Weyland/X/Gnome/Cinnamon/KDE/whatever the kids use nowadays are all busted (they all start, but they just hang tty1 and whatever other console invoked it). Tried reinstalling all those kinds of things, didn't help.

Two interns who were handed content population tasks complained “See, we’re going to content pop for the rest of our lives here”.
Two of us developers took back the job and finished it in half a day — what “rest of your lives” do you need to compete a simple job? Pffftt.
Spoilt kids nowadays need to learn how to walk first before try to fly. -

Why are there so many "curated list of X" on Github? I really liked browsing the trending page because I found several gems of OSS in it. But nowadays it seems chinese course materials, "curated lists" and so-called "H4Xx0r-Res0urces" share the space on the trending page. Has Facebook arrived on Github?2

3 out of 4 projects on hold because hosting companies nowadays can't do shit.
Changing a website on another hosting to a new one. Another hosting failing us, some big clients already waiting for the release.
I hate clients with shared hosting2 -
The cult of knowledge, science and technocracy in the Soviet Union was so strong that even nowadays we use the word "likbez", abbreviation of "liquidacia bezgramotnosti", literally "eradication of undereducation".
When you outline a theory in accessible and approachable fashion to someone who doesn't know it, that's likbez.3 -
I am working more effectively nowadays from home rather than from office.
At office, I end up spending most time in eating, playing table tennis and meetings.
The only thing I am missing at my house is my 2 big 27" 4k office monitors. -
Why do all schools/colleges in my area only provide web development nowadays? -_- It's like the schoolworld has moved on from using C for any native running software and wants to use PHP for that instead...2

Funny how Windows says "Your PC ran into a problem" on the bluescreen note nowadays. Your PC. Huh.3

So I use 4 differents setups in my life nowadays
My main PC at my home, which is on Windows 7
My PC at work, which is on Windows 8.1
My Cloud PC for gaming and video editing, on Windows 10
My travelling PC, which is on Ubuntu.
The Ubuntu, it's okay, no problem. But trust me, that's a real pain in the ass to switch from one OS to another.4 -
The perpetual and inescapable decline into madness that goes under the name of "Visual Studio".
Every new version is just that little bit bloatier (I assume it can file your taxes in the next version), crashier and slower.
Nowadays I need at minimum two cups of coffee and reading my mail before I am ready for the days frustration of waiting for the solution to open.3 -
FUCK THIS SHIT. A fucking maid is paid like idk, $30/hr nowadays. Why the fuck are we eating so much shit for.

Here is a weird fact I have been thinking about this evening:
Helio X20 was the only mainstream ARM processor that had 10 CPU cores. It was first introduced in 2015, however no more ARM processors with high core count were used since then..
Nowadays smartphone processors have `8` cores max 🤔🧐
I guess 8 cores the reasonable limit for smartphones. Must have something to do with cost-to-performance factor3 -
Can someone explain to me what is meant by, "full stack," nowadays? I see posts by people saying they're, "full stack," but don't know anything about Linux, networking, databases, or daemon configs.
How can you possibly call yourself a full stack engineer if you don't know anything about infrastructure?9 -
I just do the Three-point estimation method: It's easy enough to remember and somewhat scientific: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
I made a spreadsheet a while back which serves as a template. I guess nowadays there must be at least one website with a fancy diagram no doubt..1 -
Doea anybody have some kind of a trick to correct my back posture? I look like a sneek nowadays spending 9 hours in my chair.3

Our company cooperates with a university in training students. In my time that meant learning about HTML, CSS and OOP in the first semester, so that we'd be able to actually do stuff in the company. Nowadays it means learning none of that crap but instead Racket. "What the flying shit is Racket", you ask? "Oh, it's a functional programming language. It has lots of parentheses!", student says. Well fuck me. Out go 2 days of careful planning what task they should be able to handle, in go 3 weeks of tutorials and explaining basic shit they are supposed to learn in university...1
-
For completely nonsensical projects I propose a new metric. Instead of counting how much code is covered with tests, I propose to count how many tests are actually testing the code. They really write more tests than code nowadays3

(Mobile) Devs, how important do you see joining a company before starting your own Business? I have been into android for a year now and freelancing for 6 months. I want to start a company and sell some apps B2B. My girlfriend however says it would be better to join a company first and get enterprise experience, I dont see the point becausw nowadays there are countless of blogs and videos in the internet that teach you anything you want to know. Opinions?4

My colleague actually uses multiple email addresses that has different purposes. E.g. one email for travels, one email for work, one email for family, one email for other projects, one email for payments, etc.
I've yet to show him how emails nowadays can help label and sort them by nature.6 -

I'm trying to get into react for side projects but my java and backend background in general really make things tough. Let's say I have a few data manipulation functions that I want to extract to a separate service and inject it using react hooks (since that's what everyone is using nowadays apparently). I can see it being much more elegant than props, but all the examples I can find resolve around passing state here and there, not passing actual dependencies like a stateless service. Any ideas how I should solve this?7

An old visual basic 6.0 handbook someone gave me many years ago.
I really liked working on VB6.0 and then moving to .NET 2008.
Nowadays, I love and do web development. -
What is the use of Java nowadays besides Android? I rarely see Desktop apps written in Java and backends are developed more efficientl with django, node.js ,etc... just think about it setting up spring boot and all the warnings and errors...4

Can’t sleep these days.
Life sucks, death sucks more.
Computers break nowadays
My keyboard is full of dirt ore.
I miss two keys up and down
so looks there is no hell or heaven.
Twitch data leak is downloading slow,
I made buns in the oven.
I’m in the spiral of death,
my born was meaningless,
hot milk is hurting my teeth,
I use it to invoke sleepiness.
Nothing works,
everyone showoff
everything breaks,
I’m powering off3 -
People nowadays.
Searched for JS/NodeJs frameworks.
Read the Docs for a couple of minutes and run some examples.
*Opens* CV / Linkedin to update Skillset.

So with the count of JS/Nodejs Frameworks, they probably have lots skills listed in their CV.2 -
What is the problem with nowadays colleges? So many of the programmers I know know absolutely nothing regarding encodings and such.
It's pretty nice to see people resorting to hexadecimals to show their Latin characters in HTML instead of simply learning about bloody UTF8 -
If html and css are not really considered as programming languages, then how do we call the job? I've 'coded' the design? I've front-end designed the design? I've 'sliced' the design? (last one is sure old fashioned enough to exist..)
p.s. and while front-end devs nowadays are required to have angular, react, etc as their skillset, I feel like html and css are also shifting to be required for designers..1 -
I love the logic that underlies algorithm. But nowadays I fear that this is almost disappeared, now programming a software is 5% logic and 95% read system specificactions, documentation, implement third part solutions, think about who developed the system thought it had to be and rant because you don't understand it. I like to solve math problems using algorithms rather than deal with user interactivity, for example. Yes, all this is pointless, but sometimes I miss the exercises that I did at school or in "IT Olympiad"
-
Looks like there are new horribly regurgitated packages in python nowadays which somehow my boss keeps finding I don't know how , which have shorter commands that take more and more time to run because they are just attaching these smaller tags to bigger tags and so on.
And my boss doesn't understand that there's such a thing called as overhead time ffs and it takes the same fucking time to run that same shit and maybe more because the new packages don't have a proper fucking API.2 -
The term "CPU" is stupid nowadays, what even is "central", when there are entire server farms primarily employing GPUs.
I propose "GPP" - General Purpose Processor - as a much more descriptive name instead.3 -
How do y'all read programming books? Do you try to memorize them, redo all the examples on your machine or read them quickly just to pick up the most important points and to remember where to look if additional informations are needed in future?
Nowadays I always use the last strategy otherwise reading a single book would take me a year but I'm curious to know if I'm the only one.8 -
Another leetcode interview down. I really appreciate the options to choose your own language nowadays; being forced to use C to figure out byte gaps is like being forced to clean the freeway with a toothbrush!1

What I should be doing: Playing around with it and working my way up, usually by reading the docs and putting together a "tutorial" in my head.
What I actually do: Get overhyped think of theost complicated thing possible and figure things out bit-by-bit
Meh, I do both nowadays. Slowly buys surely.1 -
What are your thoughts about Symfony VS Laravel?
I prefer Laravel. It is much simpler than Symfony but most enterprises are using Symfony. However Laravel is keeping up also (gaining a lot of traction and users).
Laravel = Symfony on Steroids
I wonder why so many people prefer Laravel?
Who's a hardcore Symfony user here? I experienced using both but I prefer Laravel.
Right now I'm studying NodeJS, Express, Angular as it is more popular than Symfony. Also most requiremetns in job posting nowadays.6 -
I sometimes work with my company's so called "cms" tool. It's been patched up with new functionality along the way but was actually not even a cms tool from the start several years ago.
Nowadays you need to use Firefox or Chrome to change some content and IE for other stuff. So it's a lot of time and frustration spent on going back and forth between different browsers even for the simplest things. And I mean.. Hello... IE?!
Any of you have similar experiences? Please share and let me know that I'm not alone! 😢😅1 -
Most of the time staying at home nowadays is simply staring at screens.
Staring at the laptop screen while working
Staring at the phone screen in free time and breaks
And staring at the TV while having lunch/dinner

Jacob Nielsen is probably the individual who has influenced me the most. Code is just a mean to an end nowadays and the really fun part is finding out how to help people with the program you are building.

Programming lesson #8
Nowadays I write tasks for the next day at the end of my shift in the sticky notes app.
That way it's easier to start off for the next day without trying to remember what tasks were remaining from the previous day.
If tasks are greater in number then it's good to go for external task tracking tools. But for me keeping track of just 2-3 tasks is easier by using simple sticky notes app.2 -
Why the fuck do I have to complete situational strength tests related to commercial shit when I'm applying for a Software Developer role? What the fuck is up with companies nowadays? This is why it's a good idea to be your own boss and either do freelance or make your own brand, because these interviewers know jack shit about technology and software and you cannot express your passion nor your knowledge. I'm sick of how bad the employment process is for software developers who are looking for jobs after graduation.

25 yo european with 3 years of NodeJS backend xp.
Had been earning 2k/month this entire time.
I feel so lucky, that I dont think I am worth any more until I'm a senior pro.
How timid is my brain? What do other kids earn in the EU nowadays?8 -
Started with Basic back in the early '90s, then tried quickBasic that came with the new version of msdos.
Later in the college we learned Pascal, Cobol, C and a little C++.
The languages I'm writing nowadays I've learned as I went... Most of them script languages as perl, php, python and bash. And C/C++ occasionally.
And js too1 -
I'm pretty sure we don't need to use brackets and semicolons anymore. Newer versions of gcc bitch when you mess up tabs, which shouldn't matter in C/C++ because of brackets/semicolons, so why require the tabs and newlines?
On the flipside, if we're requiring tabulation and newlines nowadays, why use brackets and semicolons? Just Python it up and you won't have issues where you mess up and add/omit a semicolon/bracket and break EVERYTHING!
"It's so you can write it all on one line"
I have yet to meet anyone that masochistic.6 -
I've stumbled upon some sources (mostly C/C++ and Pascal) during reorganizing backups in home LAN from 25+ years ago. Hell, I've used to be better coder then (code is more optimized and cleaner).
Perhaps it is just hardware (much, much more powerful) and choice of languages/libraries/frameworks I use nowadays?!3 -
Any Typo3 devs around here?
I want to know why would one go for this cms nowadays?? I had to deal with it for almost 3 years and cant figure out why it is still used :| does it really have any pros compared to other cms? words cant describe my hate for typo3 right now - and since we have more than enough of swear words on DevRant i wont go into detail :) (in my defence i dont have that much experience with cms‘s)6 -

I was checking my work Inbox and the first thing that I saw was a recruiter email.
So, let's check, is this my personal email, no.
Hmmm, maybe this is a prank or a test? check email domains and everything looks legit.
It seems that recruiters want to get developer attention at all cost nowadays. :D -
When I first got started in web development I had to think really hard to write code to solve real world problems. It was rewarding and creative process. Nowadays most of my time is spent just trying to get bloated frameworks and plugins to play nice with one another! I hope the pendulum swings back at some point.

Larry Wall
I really like the fact that he approached perl with similar ideas like in the early days of programming.
He also seems like a down to earth guy.
It is kind of sad that perl isn't used as much nowadays. -
The more years go by, the more people get sensitive and butthutt by everything around them. Can't swear in public nowadays because someone will get offended lmao.1

Playstation plus extra has pillars of eternity and pathfinder. Surprised to find out they had proper gamepad support. Really diggin the chilled nature of those games. Also bcs of job cant do pc gaming with keyboard and mouse at all.3

I'm really beginning to hate css3 and all the new WebKit style effects. They are literally making loads of sites unusable imo.
Why, every time a page loads, does everything need to slowly animate/transition in. It's sooooooo annoying.
It's nearly as bad when Jquery first made it easy to fade events in.
I'm such a fan nowadays of I fussy websites where the content just displays.6 -

Anyone has experience with Linux desktop software development?
I'm gonna develop a GUI software that should work on most Linux distros.
What is the best way to develop for Linux? I'm not familiar with python, I would prefer C++. I've used gtk+ long time back. Is it still good, or are there better options nowadays?4 -
Gone are the days where i was pissed of at the shitty and expensive internet service.
Today I'm subscribed to a mobile data that is actually unlimited and throttle free with speed ~ 8 Mbps ( pretty good compared to other options) for mere $18 for 30 days. On top of that, i get 1 GB 4G data everyday from second operator.
It is all getting wasted because i don't get time to watch or play things i download.
Nowadays i find myself downloading just because i can...1 -
Guys. I'm doing a fairly large scale which will need to serve a few thousands of customers. It's the first time I'm planning to deploy an express node.js to VPS. Want to ask you, shall I look for VPS which have support to MongoDB, or is it okay to use atlas - MongoDB cloud for the user database? I feel a bit weird about having the server on one cloud and the DB on another one. Or is it normal nowadays?7

Started learning development 6 years ago with VB on YouTube, after a year I switched to C# and then I got into web development so I started learning html, css, javascript, php and I just add to that list nowadays (nodejs, python, rust, ruby, ...)

Windows apparently does reboots for updates n stuff outside your normal time of usage nowadays.
Windows apparently also thinks that your normal usage shouldn't be over 12 hours.
So now i have to decide if I'm more in the mood for random updates in the morning when i need to get shit done (ugh) or at night when i have finally time to relax. -
Question about Game Development:
I want to create myself a boardgame (Dog aka Tock aka Tuck). It should run on a Android Tablet.
What suggestions do you have?

What's the simplest way to deploy a small node project to a private root server, possibly dockerized?
I feel like there are thousands of possibilities nowadays, like Ansible and so on. But is there something more in the the KISS way? Apart from just hacking a bash script together of course, it should be portable (and work on windows too).1 -
It should be at night (after 9/10pm; I work better at night anyway), headphones on, music blasting (heavy metal nowadays), alone, preferably no distractions, but now that I am at home for xmas holidays I have to be on the lookout for my parents calling me. When I go back to uni I can eliminate that variable from this equation and so I should be in the zone for longer. Hopefully 😅

I recently changed my phone's and browser's default language to German, and I still find it hard to bear all those crappy sentences and wordings. Are these all done by "machine learning" nowadays? Or don't they teach language proficiency in schools anymore?7

Boy, I sure do love trying to figure out why our master and slave MariaDBs differ in their execution plans, even after running analyze tables on the whole DB.
Or rather, I really hope the two boxes didn't somehow magically desynced, cuz that would then beg a question of why, and how to prevent that from happening again.
I hate how databases are so necessary nowadays, but are probably the most complex and black box software I deal with. There's just so much to consider...1 -
Why is senior dev title given so easily nowadays? If the average career is 30 years, I would think a senior dev would be someone with 15 to 20 plus years of experience.
A person at my work was just given the title and they've been out of school for 7 years. For the record, I've been out of school for 5 years and I'd say I'm in between beginner and mid level. The title has nothing to do with skill, just the knowledge that comes with working in a field for a long time.3 -
I was talking to someone recently who organizes a conference and told me that some people complained that the speaker list wasn't diverse enough because he had only 2 women and no racial minorities. Apparently the numerous Asian (Indian and Oriental don't count), nor the the organizer who is in a minority. Only African (specifically black) counts a d's minority nowadays. We now have a world with I finite gender identities and only 2 races. 😰5

I’m enjoying leetcode nowadays.
To the detriment of my graphql deployment progress.
Ashamed to say, but my DSA are beyond terrible. Better late than never I suppose!
Anyone else enjoys it?1 -
Calling C a "high level language" is complete bullshit. 99,9% of all code is written in C or higher level languages than C.
What a "high level language" is not objectively definable. So this arbitrary division divides programming languages in two halves of astronomically different sizes.
It may have been a good decision in the 70s but it's completely off nowadays. I propose to draw the line between languages with manual and languages with automatic memory management.10 -
Alright, could someone with more experience tell me if nowadays the job application requirement of "x years experience needed" is something fixed or flexible?
My friends say: "That's the ideal candidate, but they are flexible if need be." but I see employers these days state that the x years experience is in fact mandatory and required.
So.. who can demystify this for me? : )15 -
