-- How I feel at work lately, in terms my wife understands --
Me: There's a gas leak, we need to fix it.
Manager: Yeah, use some duct tape, here's a roll.
Me: That's not how we fix a problem like this.
Manager: Will it work to solve the problem?
Me: Only temporarily
Manager: Ask your co-worker if you need help using duct tape, he's used it before. When will it be fixed?12 -
*casually programming stuff*
*Sudden need to open cmd arises*
Me: *opens cmd and starts typing, when it hits me*
"Fuck"
Friend: "what happended?"
Me: "i forgot to turn on hackermode"
*enters "color 0a"*
"Better"
Friend: *chuckles angerly*6 -
BOSS: i will need your resume for this new project, can you make it?
ME: sure, but don't you have one?
BOSS: yes, but i would need it changed for a new details
ME: ok...
after work...
BOSS: we have a problem, remember that resume? we need it on english, and need it right now, can you translate it at home?

BOSS: ummm, it's not translated well, you didn't translate your education...
ME: the name of the school? you can't translate that...
BOSS: this lady asked for it, so do it...
ME: ok...

BOSS: not quite there yet, you have Ć in your last name, translate that...
ME: translate my last name?
BOSS: yeah, this lady has a spell check and saw that incorrect...
ME: .....
im going to celebrate when i leave this itterate shithole16 -
Me: So i've cloned the iOS project, i've run carthage, but it won't build.. Have I done something wrong?
Devs: Oh read this doc on github, we do loads of custom stuff. The depenedncy manager can't do it all by itself. You need to run `./scripts/boostrap.sh`
Me (another day): I've switched branches and i'm getting all these errors. Any ideas?
Devs: Ah this happens when someone modifies xyz. Read this pinned slack message. Run `./scripts/bootstrap.sh` again.
Me (another day): I've switched branches again, getting different errors, re-running boostrap didn't fix it.
Devs: Ah yeah, this happens when someone modifies abc. You need to run `./scripts/nuke.sh` and then boostrap when this happens.
Me (another day): Guys When I try to run the prod app its not building any ideas?
Devs: Ah yes have a look at this confluence link. You need to run `./scripts/setup_debug_release.sh`, then nuke, then boostrap and you'll be good.
Me: .... ok
Devs: Oh btw very important! do not commit any changes from `./scripts/setup_debug_release.sh`. It will break everything!
Me: ... no i'm sorry we have a much bigger problem than that. We need to talk ... like right now7 -
Do you also hate that feel when you have to deal with 110% idiot? Today, BTC hit 5000$ mark, right now it was 5200$. Media are now full of BTC. Me with my friend, having lunch.
Me: Wow, BTC is finnaly over 5k$.
Friend: Wow, I will just wait till it gets to 5500$ and then buy so I can sell it for kore when price drops.
Me: *trying to explain that if you want to profit you need to buy when its cheap and sell when its expensive*
Friend: No you are lying thats bullshit *ragequit*
It really hurts since he is really smart, especially good in math and logical thinking... 🙄15 -
I HATE when I type :) and it comes out 😀, y'all need to KNOCK THAT SHIT OFF. If I say :/ I mean :/ not 🤔 or 😒or whatever emotion you're forcing me into.
Also ++ to devRant for getting this RIGHT! To them I say 😀😁😃😄9 -
I need a "follow this user" function.
Some users absolutely killing it when they rant. I want to get notified when they do so.26 -
I hate it when people rant that we need to call 'Ctrl, Alt & Delete' for help when we're in problem.
Real geek will use 'Ctrl + Shift + Esc'.11 -
Often saying fuck it when I've got a project and I kind of really need to use git but I'm not good with it so I just go back to good old scp again 😅11
-
When you start a project...
What you should think about :
- What does it do?
- How should I make it?
- What should I need?
What EVERY SINGLE OF YOU think about :
- What should I call it?
- Do I need a logo?
- Lemme sketch some design features. Maybe Material Design looks nice.
(lol)7 -
My Boss: When are you going to finish?
Me: There is a bug, I'm solving it, I need more time.
My Boss: Why have you introduced a bug in your code and now solving it? It were more simple if you didn't created any bug!
Me: WTF!!!8 -
"We need to get visitors age, gender and it would be nice if we could get city too.. can we pull this from the cookies so they don't have to enter the information on our site? How much info can we even pull, we need as much as we can get"
I literally kicked a wall when I received this message6 -
Dear son: when I ask you to stop using Netflix because I need all the network juice for a work-related call, please do close it or play a downloaded movie. Don't just turn the volume off...4
-
It's fine if you're 'not good with computers' and need help. Ask me politely and sure I'll see how I can help and teach you what you need so that you can do it yourself in the future.
It's not fine, however, if you refuse to fucking learn after the millionth time I've taught you how to do the exact same thing because 'It's too hard' and 'I won't understand anyway'. And then proceed to call me a bad and ungrateful friend because I can't come to your rescue the very second you need me and don't seem 1000% enthusiastic to help at 1am in the morning when I'm still doing my own work.
Sure, I'm the 'tech person' amongst our friends. I *do* understand the frustration you experience when something isn't working. But that doesn't mean I'm obligated to be your 24/7 IT support, while listening to your complaints of how I was probably the one who fucked it up in the first place when I helped fixed your phone/laptop last time (for the record, this was *never* the case).
UGHHHHHHHH
ps: I just found this community and I love it already! Thought this mental rant I had earlier would fit right in lol
(Also, sorry English isn't my first language D:7 -
I hate it when people don't want to work for themselves and when I share something for their knowledge
"Wow what pro", "Dude you're so smart" etc in a sarcastic manner.
Dude wtf, you don't want to improve yourself then fuck off. You're there because of yourself not because I fucked it up for you.
You reap what you sow and i don't need people discrediting my effort to get to where I am today. I get it, I'm not even what you would call "pro", So what shitface?! I wanna be there someday. If you don't then just die. I don't need people like you in my life 😬😬😬7 -
Fucking hell, the devs before write a query that pulls 30ish column for a report. When I break it down MANUALLY, since it’s a spaghetti on top of another spaghetti, you only need 6. Fuck you, did you dropped your head when you was a kid? Fuck sake, and every query is written in stored procedure even though you’re using an entity libraries19
-
Manager: Hey Dev I need to do QA on this PR.
Dev: That PR is not finished yet
Manager: Well do QA now anyway, that way when it is finished it can be merged in right away since QA has already been done on it. It’s a project management technique called “fast-tracking” and it improves efficiency.

When your client still need your work to be tested in IE7....next, should I ask whether I need to test it in Netscape?4

"I need these permissions that J has"
J has those permissions because he worked on a different team that was granted those, you do not.
"I need it"
No
"I need it"
Its not within my power to allow you access, you have to talk with R and M.
"Okay well guess what I'm gonna escalate this up thr chain and its gonna come down on you"
*sigh* what do i do when i literally have no authority to give someone something and am clearly doing my jobb right, but someone thinks they can get me... idk... in trouble? Threaten me??? Logic, meet the window4 -
"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3 -
When the client says "I just need a really easy edit, shouldn't take more than a few minutes."
*in my head* "Oh really? Can you do it? No? Then don't tell me how easy it is going to be to find the one line of code I need to edit out of thousands of lines in hundreds of files." -
There was once this customer, which wanted a project done. It was for around 2/3 weeks of work. The arranged cost was 500€, but when I said how long I'll need, he said:
No. I need it done in 5 days. Every day over, I deduct 50€ from the payment.
I was out of the building in less than a minute.
Fuck this type of customers.10 -
Boss: Can you modify the prototype, so that I can show it off to the customers who will visit?
Me: Sure, when do you need it?
Boss: In two hours.
Lesson learned: Always have a branch in your git with a working demo.7 -
You can always fucking tell when it is the season of economics student "entrepreneurs", by just scrolling through the job feed - "payment not verified", "$10k", "NEXT BIG IDEA", "I need", ..7
-
I've become a night worker. To put it mildly, it's become mildly annoying. I start studying/writing code at night and before I know it, it's morning. I can't seem to stop. I then end up feeling weak and sleepy during the day when I need to be awake. If I'm lucky, I get a few hours of sleep during the day. And then at night, it happens all over again. I need to fix this.7

Colleague asked me to join devRant and I was like that is it something related to development.
But when he said NO its nice and sharing about your seniors and managers. I was like that oh I need to write so much then......
Coming with expereince in first startup as employee.

Boss: "is it done yet?"
Me: "I've been telling everyone we have a problem and I need all hands on deck. I've already analyzed the issue and explained it to you and the options but YOU PEOPLE NEED TO DECIDE or I decide and probably break things along the way..."
Why does everyone ignore me when I need help but are ok asking me when they need help?

On call this week, so I answered the phone when it rang, because it's my d job, but WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CALLING ME AT 0410 MY TIME WHEN MY COWORKER IS ON THE CLOCK AT 0710 HIS TIME AND HE'S ABLE TO TAKE THE CALL?! You didn't need me. It was the same issue as yesterday, BUT I DIDN'T FIX A DAMN THING. It resolved itself. The "customer" you had on the phone to work with me to resolve the issue didn't need to be called either, just the application dev. Stop calling people who don't need to be awake just because we were the ones on the call when it self-resolved and none of us know what's going on.4
-
It is always very nice when you and a colleague are given a project that is nowhere close to being finished, a week to finish it on, and great motivation from the boss.
Being called into a meeting with the boss and he tells you:
"Ok, you know %s ?", project.name
"Yeah?"
"I need you and %s to finish it within a week", colleague.name
"A week?! We'll do our best but we need more than tha--"
"ARE YOU SERIOUS?! IT IS AN EASY TASK THAT YOU CAN FINISH IN A DAY!! I COULD DO IT EVEN BETTER MYSELF!!"
"We'll try"9 -
I don't always leave my job..
But when I do, I leave a bunch of shitty code that will make the next developer suffer.
That's what they get if they keep asking 'We need it now/today'4 -
Hey guys, I'm Davish. I'm really need to develop rant and really like it, first I came here to get some swags, but as time goes, who cares for stickers when we got some awesome knowledge and rant here7

My boss: "We need this feature by Friday"
Me: "I can make it work, but I need more time to do it properly"
Boss: "Just fix it by Friday, and you can make a proper implementation later, when there is time"
Like there will ever be time once it works...3 -
why does everyone always give me backtalk when i want to make my files smaller and more readable
"no you should put your scripts, style and template all in one file, theres no need to put it separate"
alright while we are at it, lets just write the entire project in 1 single file6 -
When will Amazon learn that I'M BRITISH! DONT FUCKING SHOIW ME PRICES IN FUCKING USD*, EVEN WHEN I'M ON THE FUCKING BRITISH SITE! WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO FUCKING SIGN OUT AND IN AGAIN EVERY FUCKING TIME TO REMIND IT!?
I'm just trying to buy a raspberry pi zero....
* I have nothing against USD, but I need to swear in order to vent my frustration.8 -
If you like purely electronic music, try drum'n'bass, more specifically neuro(-funk). Believe it or not, it really boosts productivity.
I can recommend:
For getting used to it: Noisia, Teddy Killerz, Neonlight, Zombie Cats
When you are used to it: Current Value, Pythius, Hydra, Jade, Machine Code
When you need the next level:
Billain
Generally good labels: Eatbrain, Blackout Music, Terminal, Bad Taste Recordings, Invisible Recordings7 -
When you haven't touched a project in a month and you decide you need to get back into it.
I have pages of dated notes, pseudo-code and function in the still need written. I have about 75% of the actual code up and functional, but I have no idea what I was working on when other things got in the way. I've been staring at this mess that I swear was once organized and made total sense and I'm completely lost.
Why do our brains do this!!2 -
I feel like I'm in an abusive relationship with Ubuntu.
I love it but whenever I'm with it it screws up my environment and doesn't work when I need it to.
I go back to Windows reluctantly and get everything set up and stable. I'm happy, but not excited about it. And then, within a few months, I get that thought. Maybe if I put enough work in I can make Ubuntu work for me as my main environment.24 -
Honestly fuck Android development and gradle. If I have a perfectly fine build from 6 months ago I expect it to still be working when I need to update two lines. FML4

I hate it when marketing people decide they're technical - quote from a conference talk I regrettably sat through:
"The fourth industrial revolution is here, and you need to make sure you invest in every aspect of it - otherwise you'll be left in the dust by companies that are adopting big data, blockchain, quantum computing, nanotech, 3D printing and the internet of things."
Dahhhhhhhhhh6 -
So we have Oncall system. Every month I get one working weekend.
Now senior engineers and lead are assholes. They think they can bully us. They are putting their Oncall work on our heads.
I refused to do it. But my partner in Oncall agreed to take up their weekend Oncall and in return they would do our weekday. I don't see how that is fair enough.
I refused to do it still. My partner apparently ended up doing it alone this weekend.
I don't FUCKING need to lick anyone's ass here! I don't FUCKING need to do these things to be in their good books! Waiting for the time when I saw GOODBYE TO THESE FUCKING ASSHOLEZZZZ4 -
I use Windows at home. Linux at work.
The last couple of days I was "forced" to work in Windows due to the need of Microsoft Word for documentation.
I just noticed today, that when I rebooted and entered Gnome shell again, it felt like coming home.

When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1

VoIP meeting today lasted 7 minutes.
I have kept the board down to ~5 ticket average for the last 3 months.
Co-worker(jokingly): I guess we don't need you anymore.
CEO: Quite the contrary. @chenb0x may need a promotion.
Me: *smirks*
This is why I like working for this company. Love the culture....no matter how much I may bitch about the clients.
'How did I get here?' a young dev may ask.
1. Delegate where proper
2. Script whatever can be scripted
3. When the board is low in tickets, it becomes a recursive responsibility to keep it low.
Back story
-----------------
When I was hired, the VoIP board was sitting at a ~30-40 ticket average.1 -
There has probably not been any situation when I would feel more stupid than now.
I just did a refresh of windows. It means quite a lot of work, as I need to do all the WSL related config and so on.
And I did it because I'm an extremely smart man and I didn't check that my primary screen was turned off.
I WONDER WHY I COULDN'T SEE SHIT1 -
Alright, I've had it. I was scrolling through Walmart when I saw a kititchen utensil holder with a BLUETOOTH SPEAKER? Who needs this? It probably doesn't even sound that good. I am getting tired of people slapping a Bluetooth speaker in random objects. Someone gave me a Bluetooth flower pot for Christmas. Why do you need a bunch of low quality speakers in random objects? I don't get it.13

General approach : I'm wasting my time by just sitting in front of computer all day. Since I'm freelancer, almost all of my work can be done at one place. They think, I should get a REAL job.
When they need help with tech : I'm the guy who knows everything about tech and can fix their mobile, printer, toaster, washing machine and nuclear warfare.
When it comes to admiring what I do, I'm just a useless piece of shit but, when they need technical assistance I'm their lord and savior!!1 -
I just want a coffee machine that is smart enough to know when I need coffee and then serves it on my desk.
(Also this coffee machine should automatically kill all annoying client's)3 -
My father calls me very worried: hey, do you know your mother's email login username and password? We need it
Me: no? Why would I?
My father: well, she sent it to you on email when she created it, so you'd remember!
?? What?2 -
fuck.
I think when you need 20 minutes to figure out that you tried to use (0) to acces array values instead of [0] in Java it is time to go to bed.3 -
PM: "Please try to prioritize this request that we made last Friday at 5pm over all your other high priority stuff we know you're busy and we should have requested this 3 months ago... but now we need to deliver next week and well we need it"
5 minutes later "When can you deliver that?"
Another 5 minutes later "Sorry can you give me that delivery date? We REALLY need it"
Well maybe if you leave me in peace and I can concentrate on my job rather than answering silly requests I can make up an idea of how much time I need to deliver... but of course I'm just a code monkey, I press some randome keys and the magic happens. -
when you run lighthouse on some tech "guru" with 50K subscriber's website and can laugh when they don't even have alts on images
hahahahahahahaha clowns
to be brutally honest, you need to know the basics before attempting to teach anyone anything, i don't care how boring it is

C is probably my favorite programming language. I use it for learning new concepts and implementing algorithms.
It's just sometimes I hate that I have to do everything myself when I need to focus on the solution/concept instead.
P.S., I hate C++ from all my heart. It's an abomination and a deformity of C.21 -
I really hate when I have to go to a colleuges desk to help when they need some troubleshooting . It is not because I don't want to help. It is just because of their light themed IDE.3

@dfox bug report time (at least it looks like one)!
I have ~400 upvotes atm.
For shoes in pic you need 1500 of them.
How i did this?
I equipped them when they were free afaik.5 -
Fuck Azure, Fuck Windows, Fuck Microsoft.
Half ass baked products in the market. Half the time there's no documentation. When there's a documentation it is so bad that it makes me feel like biting my teeth so hard that I am left with fucking pieces of incisors. My blood fucking boils whenever I need to deal with "POWER"shell. Fucking weaklings.15 -
At my previous job, no matter how many times I explained it, "a jquery" was an image slider for by boss. No need to say new devs didn't know what the hell he was talking about when he said the clients wanted "a jquery".2

So today I was booked as speaker for an event and I thought it was tomorrow. When they called me to ask me where I am it was too late since I need three hours to to arrive there. The stupidest mistake I made for decades.1

Why is it that other programmers think I’m a wizard when they’ve been struggling with an error in their project for hours and I just read their error messages and tell them where the error is/what they need to do/fix?2

When I press a button I expect it to respond!
Not to freeze the entire program!! Especially when I need to press this freaking button a 100 times a day!!!

I'm just a student, but I always feel like a badass when the class treats me like almost like a teacher when it comes to programming.
Our actual programming teacher is new, so she doesn't always teach well (don't get me wrong, she's nice and I do know my place as a student) so my classmates usually approaches me when they need clarification or they got an error on their code. Makes me feel useful :D4 -
I decided to create this so that my head would not need to look down. I noticed when just putting laptop on my knees my head has to look down and it causes headaches when looking down. So this "desk" make me no need to look down.
The desk has wheels so you can relatively easily move away from bed.
So prototype is done, now this could be improved to look better. Idea for furniture makers - you could do this and sell :)18 -
Production: "Do you have [device]?"
Me: "Yes. I'm implementing the software that controls [device]."
Production: "Ok, that's the only [device] in the building, and I need to ship it to meet a deliverable."
Me: "... Does he want it to do anything?"
Production: "We'll build you another one."
Me: "When?"
Production: "... Eventually."

The. Fuck. I absolutely hate it when my supervisor asks me for a time estimate on a project when I have never used the language/framework for that project before. It's like saying, "Here's a winding path you've never run before that you need to run through. How long will it take you to get to the end?" Gosh, it's like the don't ever think about what they just said.3

When your boss want's you to rewrite your licensing software because they need it to have a trial version... When I asked them in the beginning they told me 'No, we don't need that'....
Fuck me this is going to take me at least some minutes... I hate people3 -
When you run the W11 update checker, and it doesn't tell you to buy a new laptop 🤨
Shit, now I need to work out how to stop it updating.
mind you, I always wanted to watch TikTok from my taskbar, win-win right?16 -
My social life consists of spending much of my free time with my girlfriend, seeing my close family on weekends and meeting with a few friends from time to time.
It's enough for me and since there's not much of it, it isn't hard to "balance". Whatever that means.
Seriously tho, "social/work life balance" is subjective. It depends on what you need to feel good and happy. What works for some will not work for others. Don't try to push others into being social when they don't want to. Don't give me that "you need to go out more" crap. I don't. I'm fine just like this. I prefer to stay home and see a movie with my girlfriend.
That "people need to be social" mindset made me feel bad about myself for too long because I'm just not like that and people keep pushing that idea into my head. I'll go out with you when I feel like it, don't push it. Stop asking me every fucking weekend ffs.2 -

P.S. not mine, i stole it from the internet using chrome3 -
It happened only once, when browsing all those websites and see their products online I was like:
I need to do this, I need to have a website and product online how cool would it be?
And here I am 14 years later and dream came true 🙂
Don't know if that counts for this week rant though -
I started programing when I almost failed at some IT class 7 years ago when I was 16 in high school. So I started googling how to do basic stuff in java (if, for, while,... ) and I just fall in love with it 😊 I still remember how I wanted to make a button in Java so I googled: how to button in java 😂
Here I am still in love with it and I think I will always have this need to learn new programming languages, technologies, frameworks,... 😊🤓 -
Me: ok let's actually start work on a project when I get home. Something small that I can finish, bin and be happy with, just need to clone my assets repo...
*Types command, nothing happens*
Hmmm that's strange, opens router config and sees it syncing at 0Mbps
*Mad World starts playing*1 -
I found a way to make me procrastinate less on my own projects today! Stream development of it to Twitch.
Yes, there may be nobody watching most of the time; yes there may be nobody interested in a wall of text and no voice; but you just feel the need to stay on-topic when streaming, and I kinda liked it.undefined or... you know... youtube gaming could work stream the world is watching you... maybe not procrastination hobby twitch3 -
just need to say this: It's GNU/Linux folks. I know, I know, it's not as easy to say when you want to talk about it, but every once in a while give the damn GNU a little credit. Without it we might not have Linux as we know it, so show some love from time to time, it's not that hard to say GNU/Linux.12

The wonderful feeling when i need to implement new functionality but it only takes a few minutes bc I actually created a framework that I can reuse instead of writing duct tape code from scratch 😎😊😆😙3

JS method names I still can't remember, even after 6 years of writing in it:
append is called concat,
any is called some,
all is called every,
contains is called includes
I always have to pause for a good long while or look it up when I need to use any of these is annoying, but my brain refuses to adapt to these names.4 -
MS Access and VBA.
This combo is the worst dev tech I had to use it by now. Why? Because even if you try it, you can't make a single line of clean code. The syntax is horrible, it still use GOTO...
Maybe the reason why I hated working with it is linked to the context too: I was (and still) developing a system using NoSQL database and this system should be mostly fully configurable through metadata within JSON documents and it was. But we were still writing every JSON by hands so we decided we needed to develop a web based utility for us and clients who would need to configure the system but one of the head decision making people said that we don't need to use fancy technologies (because NoSQL is already "fancy") and that the configuration tool will be develop with Access because he used it a lot when he was younger and when he was coding during its free time. He said that using Access would be much easier and much time saving than our "fancy web based solution" and that he could help if we had questions...
Developing a MS Access software is already a pain in the ass but when you need to output JSON with it...1 -
Totally the best possible excuse for fewer USB ports on a laptop: "It's more streamlined!"
Yeah, when I am on the go and need that one additional port, my first thought will be "well, thankfully it at least is streamlined! That's helpful!"6 -
If I uncheck the "stay signed in" checkbox on login, don't have it checked when I need to sign in again. Especially, don't do that and make me sign in ten times when I'm just navigating your page.

React devtools in Firefox is such a pile of shit! It's slow, it hangs when selecting and it doesn't fucking show the whole component tree when it's too deep. I'm forced to switch to Chrome when I need to debug.

Today was successful. I deployed an app to a dev environment that worked perfectly on local. When I asked if it was ready for QA I said "no, there is issues that need attention"
I am now the proud owner of 75 QA emails of things that do not work. Luckily they're all duplicates of the same issue.
Ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuu1 -
When you ask your infrastructure admins for a firewall rule and you are very specific. They say that you don't need it... you troubleshoot for 2 hours then argue with them for 5 hours. Then they add the rule and it works. I want to punch someone right now and have a beer. FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having to fill skills field in my internship CV suddenly makes me realize that i actually am not really good at anything.
Some friends say that i'm a can-do-it-all person when i actually just learn how to do what i need to do on the spot.3 -
I hate that I have to have windows for my music production hobby. Does anyone know about any good DAWs for Linux?
Maybe I'll need a new audio interface as well though. Yamaha is about as bad as Nvidia when it comes to drivers for Linux.8 -
Fucking corporate bullshit. My laptop, when plugged in, has no need for power saving settings. I leave it plugged in with the screen locked, when I'm not at the office. But if I ever change any power settings, the corporate rootkit changes them back to unreasonable settings about once an hour. So I put this on a 300 second while loop.

PM: I need a brand new feature that we haven't had before and it has to have a framework backing it so that we can extend it to anywhere in the future. It also has to have X, Y, Z, it has to be able to tell the future, cure cancer, fly, and have a return on investment for us of 1000x. How long will that take?
Me (or any dev ever): Umm... well, that's kind of asking for the moon. The first few pieces will take as least 5 sprints. When do you need it by?
PM: Tomorrow. When can you have it?
Me: ......1 -
Awhile ago I said I'm getting Acer Swift 3. I did. But I don't have it yet.
Why? Because I asked for RAM upgrade. (4GB original)
2 things to rant.
1) Acer is giving a free 4GB RAM as gift which the shop didn't mention when I bought the laptop and extra RAM. So when I get it, I'll have an extra 4GB RAM.
2) I bought it on Tuesday. The shop said they will need to send the laptop to Acer service center for RAM upgrade and expect to get it on Wednesday. I called yesterday, it's still not done.
Let's see if I will get it today.1 -
Java, as browser plugin. (I don't mind the language though). Especially since when Oracle bought it.
I would talk about it, but I need to update that crap AGAIN! -
what it's like when someone doesnt use "mm/dd/yyyy" or "dd/mm/yyyy":
"I need a name for your reservation. It can either be base64 encoded or a sha3 hash"
"Yeah, I'm on my way, how many light years is it past 404th street?"
"Oh, cool, my birthday's coming up, too. How many eons away is it?"9 -
Somehow it always makes me feel good when I encounter a job related to programming without any need of a degree. It's always good to know there's still a backdoor even if everything goes to hell.3

Team member knows x better than me?
No fucking way am I gonna ask them to do it. Even if I have to learn the whole damn thingamajig from scratch. Coffee and some Halo OST are all I need, baby!
(In fairness to myself, said teammate is a bit of a hijacker when it comes to helping...)4 -
When you have a great idea for an app, then find out that someone already done it and with the same name.
My idea is way better than the existing one though... I just need to think of another name.1 -
I don't scream because my teams are in a different country and we communicate by IM and email.
I do write long ranting/passive-aggressive emails or type really quick replies when I'm pissed though. .
An example of the latter:
Boss: I need you to make a "quick" fix...
Me: hmm ok sounds like we should implement it like ...
Boss: I was thinking something like this... since it's a temp fix
Need: (typing faster) why is it a temp fix... why not builds it properly so it can be reused
Boss: but that takes time, this is quicker
Me: it's bad design because ... (Typing so fast I'm making typos)... Anyway I can do it. This is better...
Boss: ... ok fine... if you can finish it before deadline6 -
So my Windows 10 after April Creators Update (aka Nothing Works) gets BSOD when I turn off Bluetooth, doesn’t recognize my headphones, turns them off if it does, WiFi forgets password after every single restart, most of the time I need to force Safe Mode to get the computer to boot because it freezes on black screen with cursor...
Just fucktastic10 -
I always feel like a fool when I accidentally rubber duck someone - at least when I do it on purpose I've warned them first! What often happens though is I ask a question I think I need the answer to and then make the connection while they're trying to help me5

!rant
When you click on a notification about a comment, does it take you directly to the comment or the rant page? I always have to scroll down to find my comment. It's not a link!
Anyone need below features?
# 0 It would be good to have your own username/comment highlighted differently so it's easy to find our own comments.
# 1 we should have a scroll to bottom option for a rant. For a huge rant when you click on notification you need to scroll down to bottom manually to check new comments. -
... I really truly hate with a passion..
when you've agreed on one solution and when it's done, but not approved and deployed..
suddenly decides "oh it needs, x-y-z that I said it won't need"..
Mind you, that x-y-z things mean rewriting a lot of it...
Oh well, at least I get paid for the extra hours to be spent.1 -
I was inspired to be a programmer when I was 7 yrs old.
I started out using my dad's old Macintosh, it was pretty good at the time when I was 7. I played a game called "On The Run" at miniclip. I thought that one day I want to become a programmer who can do more than this or any other game.
Later when I was 9, my father bought a laptop but then he gave it to me. So I started and learn how computers work. It was a Acer 4376G I think, Windows Vista. (I didnt know vista was bad) I started with how to mod Java on a game called Need for Madness. That was when I learned about all sorts of jargon when looking up stuffs. I was able to somehow understand code but not write it. It was 9 years later, when at the end of 2015, I found khan academy and codecademy thru howtogeek. That was when I understand the most basic function that led me to build my entire knowledge or else I can only write -
Fucking hours counting systems.
One of the hardest part of consulting job is to put hours into fucking table.
One of those solutions is so smart that when I make mistake I need to call manager to unlock the input.
My friend from work compared it to playing saper.
Some of those systems work only in IE.
Some of those run java inside browser.
Some I need to be in company domain others I need to logout from company domain.
I see the amazing articles about those amazing software solutions, still opening IE and running java to put digit into text input or pick number from select.
Fucking nightmare. -
https://ibm.com/support/home/...
What the actual fucking fuck? I've spent almost two days debugging this motherfucking piece of shit.
So.
YOUR BIOS HAS A WINDOW WITH A DROP SHADOW SO VERY COOL OF YOU IBM, BUT YOU CAN'T GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER WHEN IT COMES TO BOOTING.
I mean, what's the fucking logic? I don't fucking need a nice interface to my BIOS. No one fucking does when it comes to server hardware.
This is it for me. Fuck IBM. Fuck it hard. I really hope Oracle buys you.3 -
When I was in my highschool I started learning android. My first need was a timetable app, so I made a very simple timetable app. I shared it with my friends and when I noticed people are liking it.... I rebuilt it from scratch and published it on playstore. Now I'm in college and when I see people using it, I feel really proud.
here's the link to mah app:

Me: I need to build my APK and upload it so I can show my friends when I meet them at the mall in a few days
Also me: *writing this rant* -
i think im losing my mind.
i swear i placed like, 10 labels on my VB form, the designer even shows it's there! but when i run it for testing it all disappears!
i think i need a break.8 -
That feeling when you find a library in GitHub that does everything you need but you see it hasn't been updated in more than two years... Just in case I answered a few issues, I hope I helped someone2

Don't you just hate it when your company's lead developer has so bad imposter syndrome, that he can't actually produce anything even moderately complex. Then it's you who has to fix his fuck-ups..I really need a raise.. :)
-
Why does Windows have to be so fucking useless when running docker. Everytime i need to make a change to the NGINX container, I have to restart the docker daemon, rather than rebuild and restart the container.
I would be doing this on Ubuntu, if I could install it that is.8 -
I have been a developer in one company or another for over 27+ years. Today I had to dismiss / fire / let go of a recently hired developer (a Senior by career length) on one of the teams I now manage. Basically imposter syndrome compounded with an inability to communicate a need for support (even when we reached out daily to assist).
When I had to let this person go I felt all the times when it happened to my colleagues , and to me. Like a thousand knives stabbing . It wasn’t easy.
It’s of course not easy to be dismissed . But it’s also not easy to be the one to dismiss.5 -
Fucking asynchronous code can be very annoying sometimes. Had to struggle the whole day yesterday to get it work properly so I fetch all the results from a function which does many asynchronous calls.
Then I realized that I just need two more counter variables to increase and later decreases to detect when all of them finished.
That shit..1 -
I hope one day i will stop writing dirty code to achieve a task, forget to refactor it and then struggle to use correct names for variables and methods when i need to move on other tasks.
-
Pissed off:
Trying to write a date function that converts an Int (seconds) to days hours/minutes/seconds.
Get stuck when I build the output-string because I need to mix string and Int. I am used to C# and PHP, C++ just screws it up for me.3 -
You know that moment, when you look for something on wikipedia, and after few hiperlinks you are reading about influence of penguins on Mars' day length or othen nonsense?
Just happened to me like 4th time when reading Django documentation. It is so well written and easy to understand, that I just click and click and want to go deeper, and then realise I have to read what I need, because I never ever got to it in the first place.
Gotta love the people who make such docs. I never could, and prbly will.1 -
So finally I just got my first credit card!
Now on, I don't need to worry about carrying cash when traveling abroad, enjoy free lounge access, buy things in installments and what not.
It's almost impossible to get credit card here without a typical 9to5 job. The best thing is I didn't have to work for it at all. It just happened. So that's something.4 -
I havent touched swing in months, and now when i need to come back to it everything is Windowbuilder. Trouble is, nothing is included in Eclipse and I don't have time to go around hunting for the packages I need. Netbeans is marginally better, but GODDAMN its frustrating when it auto-gens code that you have to use N++ to edit...2
-
Cordova or Xamarin?
I need to build a mobile app again, mostly for Android, because an interior Official app's functionality is so interior (written but monkeys) that it has finally pissed me of enough to take action.... And possibly be profitable (ads banner).
Mostly targeting Android but hey why not hit them all or at least also UWP.. I ain't paying for the Apple license... (Or maybe dfox could help release it...)
Anyway, which is better? I kinda want to pick up React and maybe try Typescript? (currently work with MEA(v1)N at work)
But I also use C# WPF, but mostly for my own projects these days when I need a desktop GUI.
I don't really feel like relearning Android SDK, I learned the SDK back when it was for Ice Cream.8 -
When you type 'git facebook' in your browser and need a couple of seconds to figure out what's wrong with it, it might be a sign to take a break and go on a holiday far from any computers. Good thing I have next week off...

love it when client supports comes to me and tells me the entire conversation they had with a client when i just need wathever request they had. i could have been done with this feature in the time you took giving me 90% useless information.2
-
I'm relatively new to the whole development and stuff, so I have no idea how usual process goes.
So when my project moved onto closed beta, I thought I could rest a bit.
NOPE.
Apparently half the shit I've done sucks so much and I need to debug the shit out of it.
Bless the testers.3 -
How come Rust is the most loved programming language? I wanted to give rust a try in my windows machine and when I run `cargo run` or `cargo build` is shows: linker `link.exe` not found
Okay, how to fix it?
you need to download 8GB+ of bullshitty visual studio C++ build tools just to run a simple rust programs! WTF!
Previously when I installed rust, it didn't need all these bullcrap. why now?10 -
That moment when you worked with bug 2 days and now it's a feature! I need to drink more coffee because it helps - Ready to do more!
-
When I saw a blog post said you need more than 1 cup of coffee to get AWS configuration done, I didn't believe it. Now I know... it's true. very true. It takes forever to make use of your config. By the time it's done, you already switch to something else.

I need a cloning machine for those days when 3 clients call support for top priority issues and each one needs it in the next 20 minutes2

whenever I suspend my laptop my openvpn would get stuck on reconnecting and I'd have to ctrl c and wait for like minutes so it would correctly close. so I only used VPN when I really needed it.
but then I found out: mullvad (my VPN host supports wireguard! and so wireguard is a more passive protocol, and doesn't need to keep open the connection. so now I can just set my VPN to "always on" and not worry about it anymore, yay!
ps: you should have seen my face when I found out mullvad gives away free stickers! :D -
when a senior and tech lead write conflicting PR comments ~1 week apart
i dont give a fuck, ill do it either way you want but you 2 need to sort out how the fuck you want it5 -
Fuck apple, and fuck xcode.
Making and running android app was a breeze.
Making and running ios app was hell.
Expectation : I should have gotten everything I need just by installing xcode and flutter.
Reality : I need to install these from the terminal : xcode command line tools, homebrew, ruby, cocoapods, firebase-cli. Also I need to manually add many stuffs, such as google login url into xcode project settings. Also we can simply test run our app or install to our device, and iphone we owned, we need to register in apple developer program, fill a full form, blah blah blah.
When it comes to android, I only need to register an account much much later, when I want to publish it to the playstore.5 -
Company now sends everyone to home office.
Expected - "Yeah! No more time spent with bus/subway. I can finally escape from people stopping me when I'm ready to leave."
Reality - "mail received at 8pm and phone ringing 'did you get that file? Need it ready ASAP.'"2 -
When I cannot sleep or when I'm half asleep I always think "in programming code". Like if my daily problems or issues where actual classes and methods I need to fix or implement.
This is super weird and I cannot do anything against it. I'm wondering if I am the only one who does this.1 -
When someone asks me how implement React, Redux and a lot of those stuff on their projects I answer:
If you don't have any idea what it is you might not need them.1 -
Today I was forced to write spaghetti code.
When your database structure isn't set up properly, that happens...
I'm already sure I will need to revisit this piece of literal shit when we revise that structure. Though, it'll be much easier and logical, and I'll probably be able to just delete a big part of the code and implement it as intended. -
New favorite statement/question: "OK, but WHY?"
When co-workers want access to something, when clients request stupid features, when clients say almost anything really.
If you can't tell me why, then I probably don't need to waste my time on it.1 -
User A: So, we have some issue with uploading files. You guys need to fix it.
Me: Yeah, sure. We'll put it in our issue log. I'll let you know when its fixed so you can try uploading.
> Solving other issues which they said was more important.
A few days later:
User A: Uhhh..so guys, we have this issue while uploading..
Me: Yes, I know. We'll solve it and let you know when you can test it again.
> Working on that uploading issue
User A: So, I sent you an email. Its about the file upload. It doesnt seem to be working
Is it really hard to understand when I said to wait till we get it fixed?3 -
who's so stressed out right now? me.
why? i need to change the access token in my code because it was changed
why is that stressful? because there is no variable for it, it was hardcoded
who coded that? me.
when? when the whole dev team was drunk asf
fml1 -
Oops! I did it again. Shredded the brain trying to debug my code. Now, my head is empty with a totally unrelated issue I need an answer to. What happens when one travels faster than light? Uuuurgh!2

Just found out that android looks for new SSIDs even when wifi is off...
Why does it do that?
Isn't that a waste of battery?
Well since I use the SSIDs of my company to save the time of entry and leaving I don't need to have wifi on now, but still... Why?2 -
Maybe im wrong but still, damn policies, at my job i need a code review and a commit review before committing code and Im ok with that but hell, I was required to run the api tests when I only modified 2 front end file, i mean seriously i need to run c# tests after modifying angular components. It just seems silly and foolish and a complete waste of time to run the tests for all the projects when i didnt even modified one.
If you work with me and know who I am then stho and accept it. :prant policies job tags are traps fbi putin has nothing on me like really angry angry deletefacebook pichardo for president hello nsa -
I fucking hate when my project manger makes me do demos on sprint reviews. I have enough fucking things to focus on. I don’t need this extra pressure. Fuck this. I hate public speaking. He thinks that it helps me to grow. Fuck him. 😒😒😒😒3

I hate getting SICK (everyone hates it)...
Specially, when I need to prepare for presentation for a talk. -
I've been on the same job for over a year now and I'm still working the same hours, but it feels like my life is becoming only work. i come home and sleep and I dream of work, so i can't even escape it when I'm supposed to be resting. i think i need a vacation2

FUCK!!! I JUST FINISHED WRITING THE MOST AWESOME RANT BUT THE APP CRASHED RIGHT WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO POST....
TLDR: I wrote an old app and now need it again and amazingly it works...
This pic is now not so effective anymore but that was how I was feeling when I was writing the original7 -
I switch my phone off when I don't use it.
When I work, I have everything I need on my laptop. When I don't work, I don't usually expect anyone to call me, and I want to talk to no one anyway, so… Yep, my phone barely sees uptime.
It's on when I'm out becuz camera (https://miloxeon.com/photos), but that's about it.1 -
One thing I don't understand, when I want to sign into iTunes Connect website, I have auto fill filling credentials, Apple first shows only email field, click next, then it shows password field, click next then you are logged in.
Why is it like this? Username and password are both filled, but yet need to click login twice to access my account -_-4 -
When I only had one monitor and started to programme more professional I began to really want a second one.
When I got the second one, it was absolutely hillarious and my productivity increased a lot. I was absolutely happy!
Now, after some months... I... I want a third monitor. Two aren't enough anymore. There are so many needed windows! Really! I really need a third monitor!
Will this ever have an end?5 -
So JavaScript/ES6 is kicking my ass. I'm not used to front end development as much. Idk when to use javascript and how. I dont know when I need to manipulate the DOM and how I do it. It's a new concept and I'm hoping PHP isnt gonna have as big of a learning curve..7
-
Every assignment is done by reference in JavaScript... like why? Lemme use a pointer when I need it.
ES2016 looks so much like Java, I swear nobody will notice if they added pointers... and over 9000 more confusing features.12 -
When I'm working through back end stuff ....
I'm at the point where I need a physical button on my desktop where I hit and it just fires off the API and I look at a monitor and there ya go, the output.
Grabbing my mouse and etc each time I iterate not sense.3 -
I'm new in the programming world; when I need to learn something new I generally look at documentation and articles to get an understanding of the basics.
Then, if it's still interesting to me, I just try it out.
Sometimes I might ask a fellow more experienced programmer or a teacher to explain it to me.1 -
I love python. But in JS I hate it when I do a lot of nesting then end up missing a bracket. That shit is crazy. Python you just need to see the indentation. Very easy to debug.3
-
Somehow further back on this ticket than when I started. How does that even happen?
I went from okay I can replicate the issue and trying to fix it to now the data I need to replicate it won't even load. WTF?
I don't know
Senior doesn't know
Our boss doesn't know
3 seperate QAs don't know
Boss of QA doesn't know3 -
first time working with android. using threads debugging is not working like it should. app works great when I'm not debugging. code doesn't get executed WTF i really need that stressball FML

I hate it when we have weeks of planing, i know that it is important in soft eng but yet it is too long. I rather get a prototype, test it and get real results instead of daily brainstormings based on theories.
People need to grow guts and test !2 -
You know, I've been fired from my first two jobs, currently on my third. I thought it was stressful enough to look for work when you absolutely need it to keep up your income.
But now I realize that it can be just as hard to look for new work when you are unhappy in your current position. Even if your skills are highly valued.
I've tried having two offers and accepting the one that felt right. Turned out bad in the end.
I've tried getting really excited about the first thing that fell in my lap and just jumping in to it. Did not go well either, as it turns out.
So now, even though I technically have all the time in the world to find the right place, I am second guessing myself constantly.
Should I go for something I'm not sure about because it pays well? - I really need the money, actually.
Or should I tough it out if I find 'The Perfect Place', but they can't pay me what I need?
And a lot of things also make me want to stay and try to fix the situation at my current job.
It's exhausting -_-7 -
every time I run into some issue in rust and spend days googling and asking a billion AI chat bots turns out it was rust that was wrong
I'm so exhausted
do they have brain worms
nobody considers "hey maybe this feature isn't in yet" (and actually they'll argue against it being a feature and you should feel bad at coming up with it)
they're just like "you're doing it wrong!"
YOU HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION TO INFER THE TYPE AND YOU DID INFER THE TYPE YET YOU TELL ME I NEED TO ANNOTATE THE TYPE BUT YOU'VE INFERRED IT AND YOU CANT TELL ME WHY I NEED TO ANNOTATE IT
And I love how suddenly you can convert a Result object using `as` which is a keyword reserved only for primitives, so say the docs... and it works (and works at runtime as well). because the type was never wrong. you fucking inferred it. but you're bitching at me that you need an annotation. when you don't.
remember when languages were made by people that actually liked coding instead of this clout-chasing nonsense. that's what I'm blaming this on12 -
When friends ask me to do some coding...
Them: I want/need this and that and... [trillions of features and "cool" stuffs]
Me: ...okay
Them: Oh and this and that and [more "cool" stuff]
Me: Alright.. when do you need it?
Them: something around a week?
Is it just me or does everyone -not- accustomed to coding think that projects are usually done in a few days...?
Maybe the common opinion about coders is something like: They aren't humans, they are machines which convert caffeine during night time to source code3 -
I have a problem. I am too much of a perfectionist when it comes to coding. I need it to be perfect before anybody else lays their eyes upoun it. Functions, logic, commits.. everything needs to look good. This has been one of the reasons why I get delayed so much and miss deadlines.1
-
When you feel like giving up on it all and just going off the grid... I've been programming too long. I need a fuckin' break.1
-
To all the people who use laptops for coding, what are the most important things to look out for when getting one. As a desktop user, all of these machines seem underpowered and overpriced.
Im mostly aware what I need to get regarding hardware inside, but when it comes to displays/keyboards/mousepads(does anyone even use that?)/size/io, I am preety clueless.11 -
I feel like a intern when I am a full time dev. Damn it, I need to improve. I don't wanna be a burden.1
-
When your project starts off well structured, but ends up like a pile of goo. I need more experience it seems.
-
Question: when modeling a language using a nondeterministic finite state machine, do I have to add a "trash" state, if a deterministic one would need one or can it just be obmited and if so why?5
-
When I need to ask my boss something...
Jesus... This guy explains you 3 HOURS long on why you need this cable and why you cant use another one, and he wants you to write it down... Every. Single. Word...3 -
When client for past few days tells you how important that new feature he wants is, and you should get to it asap.
But then when you actually start working on it after discussing it, specification creation and preparations, with mind set and focused, he tells you:
- 'Know what? I will need that change in the old feature before that. You can postpone the new feature by one day.'
So... How was it the most important thing in the universe again? -
When you accidentally send a screenshot of a chat to the person him/herself. Lot of shitload to get out off .. FYI I blocked the person. Would have to deal with it 1.5 months later when I actually meet her after vacations. I need luck :(

How do i handle code review as a junior developer?
I understand its need and I don't want to skip it.
But I feel under confident after code review when my mistakes are pointed out. They always seem so trivial and wonder how did I even miss them. How should I handle such situations? And how do I improve from here?6 -
Got warned for having low performance. Time to beg my previous employer to take me back when I rejected their offer last year.
If it worked, I will probably need to be a complete asshole to get laid off10 -
When you do the drag and remove of the react-native app on the phone and realise on the next build it doesnt work because i need to remove app from settings because it got disabled
Its Friday, i spent less time that younger me would have finding that. I consider it a successful debug session. -
I finally have a vServer again, now I need to fill it with 'life': secure it, build a small website and mailserver.
The main idea is to have some basics to look more professionell. I'd love any tip and idea how idk, save work before I run into stupid beginner mistakes, or things you had good experiences working with when you had similar tasks? :) -
I just spent an hour researching about how to do this thing in a particular JavaScript framework when I remembered I can do it in CSS 🤣 I'm so embarrassed I really need to practice my vanilla
Worst of all I did find StackOverflow answers with the framework solution but it's so easy in CSS -
I'd really wish girls/women knew how fucking annoying it is when they are speaking loudly with each other at the company toilets, and stays there for 5-10 minutes to discuss what they did this weekend.
There are only two things I want/need to poop: SILENCE! and my phone.
I don't need the feeling of sitting in the middle of a Starbucks while taking a shit. -
Just realized that it’s been a long time since I had to deal with collections that contain values of different types and that ugly type checks that come with it when you need to do something with the values.
Sum types are really a blessing. -
I really want to develop a mobile app that chooses a random combination of clothing and keeps track of the times I've used it, warning me when It's time wash them. Already decided that I want to try weex+vuejs, just need to be in the mood to start.

Started playing around with HTML and CSS when I was about 8. Tried JavaScript but it never stuck. Started to learn a bit of Python when I was about 13 and enjoyed it, but never applied it to anything other than some maths. Used some basic ActionScript in Flash animations. Wrote some simple VBA in Excel. Learnt Matlab during my Engineering degree. Now I use Mathematica for my PhD work, Python for fun and useful bits of software for myself, and the occasional bit of PHP and whatever else I need at the time to get something working.

Always fun when you leave 7-zip to run overnight then you check in the morning and it says not enough disk space. Now I need to spend most of the morning getting stuff to external drives. 7-zip why couldn't you give me that error last night so I didn't become angry when I looked.1

I deleted my ubuntu partition from my windows, and when I turn the pc on, it shows up the grub terminal with a black background.
I need help, I need to install linux again too.7 -
Aw fuck, I'm more retarded when it comes to Linux than I anticipated.
(Arch) Linux is like a nice, big framework where everything you need for the basic setup is already there, but you end up overlooking it and implementing it yourself.
At least my hard drives are gonna be defraged -
Worse coding mistake was a typo when I first started. it was on a arcade site I made and as long as you had the users email the typo made it where you didn't need the password to login to an account. luckily it was a free arcade I made to learn from

started to try out xamarin. a ideal way to write it once and use it in 3 apps. on windows all was fine. android sdk adn ndk installed everything ok. starts to looked at ios hmm, you need mac to build project, simulate. oh wait even the UI designer you need mac pc.
WTF is going on here, are you serious apple. come to think of it, now i get how apple sales numbers are high. when developers and companies need to by apple pc in order to make a fucking app for them. but that's not all you need to pay 100euro a year to publish the app.15 -
Every time I updated API document, I ask you to comment
You said it looks fine
And when we start integration, you said this need to change

I just love sudo. You need to delete one stupid locked file that's not even locked, but the damn terminal isn't capable to check twice. When you delete the files recursively however, sudo loves you so much it takes the folder as its own, so... I need to remove another thing now! Sure! Why not!3

Had a php float value that I needed to use as a string, so I typecasted it.
Later on in the code I need the value again but now it was a string.
Typecasted it back to a floating point.
My colleague almost killed me when he found out what caused the miscalculations.2 -
I hate that feeling when I say "I think I could fix it" and eventually accepting that I have to ask for help, and maybe pay for it. That feeling tastes like defeat, and it's the same way people feels when they need my services. I think this should help me be more sympathetic with clients, but it doesn't.

I think I'm a good teacher, learner when it comes to Front-end development. I've been active on Stackoverflow, but this platform to help someone seems more decent (here you don't need to curse someone's code to help him/her) 😀1

I really don't like the anxiety when Xcode crashes, I need to force quit it and really really hope that my code is saved...

I’m a very logical person (INTP), so that’s probably why I like coding, and it definitely affects my relationships. I’m not very emotional, and that’s an issue when your partner demands you to be. When I’m down I make a plan in my head how I’ll deal with that issue and that lifts me back up. But there are people who simply need to be lied to telling them things will be just okay. So, yeah. I need to find girls who are also logical at least to some extent.6

I use qemu/KVM on Linux. I love being able to do basically all VM operations with commands. So when I need to use my Windows VM(ie: connect to a WebEx), I pop it on with an integration I wrote for my keyboard launcher(mutate), or just execute an alias over SSH, and connect via VNC. When I'm done, I just shit it down. At this point, Windows has been reduced to just a windowed program that I run.7

I don't know if it counts, some weeks ago I wanted to publish my first telegram bot on github, so...
Well, I was quite nervous when I wrote it, and I didn't care about writing good code... That wasn't even passable... It looked like an american coffee... Washed, tastes bad, looks ugly...
I wrote it back in two days, changed module from telepot to python-telegram-bot (more pythonic), wrote a c extension for a xorshift algorithm and pushed it on github.
Well, that was quite satisfying, but I became pale when I noticed it didn't need to be restructured, but entirely rewritten1 -
Do you want to know why all the popular open source projects have less-than-optimal, sometimes really dirty code?
It's because their developers ditched all the unnecessary stuff to just get the damn thing done. When I choose an open source dependency, I don't need unfinished stuff. I need a stuff that works and has all the features I need from the very start. If it works, I don't care about code quality in my deps.
This is the reason why dirty, rushed stuff with a great idea behind it gains popularity. PHP, Git, jQuery, the list is quite large.
While you've been busy polishing your files hierarchy, these guys already shipped their product, gained adoption, and their userbase doesn't need your product anymore.
This is applicable only for true open source, not "it's developed by a full-time team of principal developers and the CTO is fucking Kent Beck, it costs $1m per month but yea we have it on github".3 -
This project is such garbage. JavaScript built at runtime with JSP bindings, every form is submitted with Ajax even when it doesn't need it. Ajax calls with HTML in a JavaScript string sent to the server only to be echoed back to the front end to build DOM elements. I literally can't even.2

I can't do my job without internet. Guess which construction fuckers couldn't keep their shovels in the right holes and knocked out our power and connection to the interwebs. That's right. What to do when someone creates anger in me?
How do you guys deal?
I'm in college. Will it be useful in life later if I learn to swallow my anger? or Do I need to develop some mindset so I can't be affected by whatever anybody says to me or insults me.
One of my teachers scolded me in the examination hall because he didn't like my clothes. There were no rules regarding uniforms. I was not wearing revealing or torn clothes, just normal clothes.
I hate it when such things happen. It disturbs me. Even when the whole event is over, the whole thing plays in my mind again and again, sometimes for days.4 -
Something that I need to learn: not taking it personally when people answer something in which I was wrong by terminating their sentences with "..."
When people finish sentences with an ellipsis, I always assume they're judging me as being stupid or something, but indicating that they're refraining from saying it. Almost feels passive-aggressive. I hate it. But I guess I need to learn not to take it personally.8 -
Should a validator change his object during validation?
I want to validate the address of a person with Google geolocation api. That needs one request against their api. After then I would need the lat lng in the person object. So when i was playing saxophone, I realized that music and coding are just the same. When you get a new score to play you need to start over by learning how to play it. When you code and start a new project you need to start from zero. When you play the score over and over you learn from your mistakes. When you code you debug your faults when there is something wrong in your code. At the exam you need to make no faults when you play music. When you’re at the deadline. There shouldn't be no faults in your code

Visual Studio Code is a joke.
it's always auto update but always fail and then delete itself.
When i ask what happened or post a discussion on the official site they close it and send /redirect it to fucking different issue like changing language code or adding extension while the real issue about auto update failure is ignored or discarded/deleted/closed without solving anything

Hoarding tendencies.
Exploring different possible solutions for a problem, eventually you or management decide on the way to go, now I should delete the other code I wrote while exploring, but thinking, "ok I may not need it now, but who knows what might come up, let me comment it out until the end of the project when I am certain that it is no longer needed." -
My team has a pathological need to NOT comment! What the fuck!! I think it is because a lot of it is actually magic, so they don't want to admit ignorance. My code is full of "not sure why it works, but breaks when removed." Chunks. That way, when debugging, I actually know what is going on????
I am currently going through and editing someone else's code, and I see code that has no clear purpose, even when removed! Does it do something I don't see??? Does it do nothing?? Fuck! -

The most stressful day of month.
I need to put hours into hour counting programs so computer can analyze those hours using deep learning algorithms and pay me a wage I don't deserve.
Each program work differently.
One of it works inside the local company network.
Other one I need to connect outside from company network.
In all of them I can't make mistake or I need to write to someone to fix my mistakes.
One of this programs use java applet, other is simple php website.
One of them blocks row in calendar when I click so when I login again and click I can't edit this row because it's locked by me who is editing this row.
One of them is requesting me to provide my work in minutes.
I need to follow strict procedures to report any holidays or national holidays that I need first figure out when they happen.
Wish me luck.1 -

I Paid 32€ for this world atlas.
When I'm in the Premium area I can only see maps in a craptastic quality.
When I download your "Online Globe" software thing I can't make it flat, but can draw on it (it's buggy, slow and weired to use) and your menu from 1990 I guess don't has a print option.
And when I want to use your digital Version of the atlas I would need a license for 4€??? -
Maybe someone here can help me out. I get annoyed when I need to use the mouse; I lose concentration whenever I have to find it on my desk (small glance from the screen to find it). It is quite disappointing when some developers only rely on using libraries / dependencies(or whatever you call it) rather than do it manually. I know it can make the work faster but still using too much libraries will make it worst. It’s not bad using libraries, but if you use too much libraries it doesn’t degrade the performance of the app ( too much memory space when you only need that certain action and you include the whole library) but when the library becomes deprecated and no updates that might cause a problem.
It’s not bad using libraries, but not too much.2 -

I remember when I was on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04, there was that weird glitch on TeXstudio where it initiated a system shutdown signal when I just press on the power button, even for less than half a second.
And now, I don't have this problem on Xubuntu. I still don't know what were the circumstances of this glitch, but I don't think I need to bother about it for now lol -
"Ok. I need to gather a bit more information to pinpoint the cause. When you say it is not working, how precisely is it not working? Does the program not open at all? If it does open, is there a specific action that you can do to reliably cause it to fail? Is it not working on only one computer, or is it failing on all computers?"

So I want to make an app...
You sign up with an email and phone number which is connected to a firebase or something idk yet
You add all your friends/family through email or phone number
When you need to, if you go to one of your friends, it will send notifications to your friends phone and will force it to make a sound on full volume, even if it’s on silent. Sort of like a find my iPhone for friends, or when you need them in a n emergency and you think they’re sleeping.
Of course they’ll be options to turn it off/block incoming notifications.
How would I go about doing like the whole connecting to the other phone part?5 -
I posted a few days prior about how I was starting CPP because I had been crushing all my other higher end stuff (Js, Python, Flutter/Dart, etc.) and that CPP was gonna destroy me. Haha I'm doing alright, but I need to find something to use CPP for in order to determine when I will need this besides games or say building a browser engine. Could use a little direction as to what I could be working towards. I have NOT encountered a problem that I need it for yet, but I wanted to familiarize myself with it because it's an essential language regarding full stack. I am a solo dev!2

I just literally hate the situation when I know what to do, BUT! There's actually always this invisible "But". It started when life caught me off guard. It was one of those transition moment when you realized you are no longer a college student and you need to get a job.
I was clueless that time (still clueless - smh) that I didn't prepare my CV nor interviews. I got into panic mode and ask help from career service in my college (I rarely ask for help, and when I did that, I am really desperate).
Long story short, I got a job from the career service's connection. I don't think I did well in both the interview and technical test (of course, no prep or whatsoever, what do you expect?) but seems like we both in need of each other (maybe because my grades when I was in college is good... and maybe because my starting salary is low enough... and maybe because there was no better candidate at that moment) that I get picked.3 -

Hi all.
I would like to know what kind of online service / software do you use to work on a project (web development) when you are a team of 3 or 4 devs.
I need something to let us do some brainstorming to find the idea of our future web app, then to prioritize what feature need to be develop first, by who, when, etc.
I found Taiga.io (an open source service and an alternative to Trello) recently, and it seems to be a good choice when we will be on development.. what do you think ? Do you have any dev tools to recommend ?3 -
[POLL] How do you develop stuff?
1 - just write code. It doesn't need to be organized, it just need to work how you thought it would, and THEN you start organizing things, like editing/creating new files, letting things DRY, optimizing the sutff you did earlier;
OR
2 - you surgically write code, making sure you keep everything is organized from the beginning. Basically you only write when you are sure.
Or maybe it's a blend between the two or something.
I'm asking because I do like the #1 and I feel uncomfortable when people see my code when it's under development. It's a mess, there are tons of comments everywhere and a bunch of repetition. But, when I find the right stuff, I start writing modules to make my code work better, remove unnecessary things, add documentation, and so on.
My development process is not the best of the best, but I get things done with it.7 -

My brain as stopped, I know I have done this in the past but I have 100% forgotten how I did it, I am creating a website where when I am singed in/connect to it, it enables more content, the content would be only hosted via my computer, when I did it in the past I did it behind a none upnp router but I have no idea who I did it, I am sure I did use a tool but I forget what.
Now I have no idea how to word it so unable search for something like it, why dose my brain do this two me.
Anyone know how to file deleted and forgotten files in brain OS 0.1.
Record, document and back up your ideas guys lol you might need it in the future. -
What kind of fucking IDE changes the order of the open file tabs randomly?!?
I need to deal with multiple files and I really don't want to search for the file tab every fucking time I need it! It even gives the option to move tabs around as to arrange them as you wish. How is that helpful when the next time a file is opened the arrangement goes to hell?!
Fuck. I wish this IDE didn't have such a good debugger so I'm not stuck with it.1 -
Okay so I'm new to C++ and my competition is either tomorrow or Thursday. And before I go into the comp I need a good random number generator but the problem is I can't get a good one . And when I run mine I either get the same number a few times in a row then when it changes it just increments a few until it hits 99 then restarts. And I only want it to generate different numbers everytime with a 1/99 chance to get the same number.2

Ranters, I need help
Does anyone know how can I run something as a systemd service and still have access to the "console" - the input and output of the program, when I need it?
(It is a minecraft forge server and there are multiple people managing the physical server and one of them managed to corrupt the map yesterday by rebooting the machine without stopping the minecraft server... so there comes the need for a service so it can shut down before the machine reboots... but I also need the access to the console of said minecraft server because sometimes when some modded items are misbehaving the rcon will stop responding while the console still works)
Edit: currently I am running the minecraft server in a detached screen (ddg "screen linux" if you don't know what I am talking about)5 -
A bit of an off-topic, but people need to shut up about copyright.
I see people making cool fun stuff all the time, and they start talking about a liscence to use it and copyrights and stuff. Wtf!? I get it if you're making a big commercial project, but no one's gonna steal your cookie clicker clone nor your minecraft mod.
I get it that people want their work to be protected, but ffs it reay annoys me when people bring up legal stuff when mentioning a project that was clearly just made for fun.8 -
When AppSync subscription payloads are defined by the initiating mutation instead of what I ASKED for, and filtering only works when the initiating mutation specifically queries for that field in the respond payload that it doesn't even need.

Have you ever needed to compromise the architecture for quick delivery?
So not to go into details but imagine this:
You start with a surface are that will fit a few items, but you need to stretch it to its limits.
When you start to populate it you realize the architecture is wrong, but delivery day is close so you make it work anyways.
When launching you need to prop it up with something, you find some 3PP that was not really meant to function this way but if scaled up it just might do.
For it to work long term you need a platform to put it all on, it may be slow as to tortoise but it will have to do.
Whenever this happens to me I think it has worked in the past (ex. Terry Pratchett) and I continue to help making the world a more magical place.
Where a one in a million chance will always work but that’s not a bug… it’s a feature.1 -
Do we need compression on api level? say I have a rest api sending json data on requests. So if compression is needed then should it be in the server when returning the json response or in the client side when receiving it? which one is ideal?13

Rant/ Question.
I've lost count how many times windows has decided to wake itself up from sleep mode to update. Sometimes it doesn't even update, I will be laying in bed and it will turn on, I will then have to sit up for half an hour waiting for it to finish (otherwise my pc will just be on all night) then when it is finally done, I will get up and go to turn it off and it says "Turn off and update" and need to update again.
To make it worse, it restarts itself while updating, so all the stuff I wanted to keep open by putting it in sleep mode will be gone.
Is there any way to prevent windows from doing this update during sleep mode? If not I am going to need to completely turn off my PCs power when it is in sleep mode, which it just a pain for me.1 -

I just hate it when Windows dies in obscure ways just when you need it.
This is why I use Linux most of the time, but hey, I thought it would be nice to finally play a game now that I've got a couple of days off. I wasn't too into the cold brew thing. Tasted shitty and why do it when you can have a good espresso?
But.
I bought a cold brew bottle couple of weeks ago and I am enjoying it too much. Cool in summer, better than cola, cheaper caffeine and all I need is just a glass. And tastes good if it is not chilled!
I hope my coffee packs don't go stale while I indulge myself.6 -
I need to have a hosting company upgrade the Debian OS install on a VPS. But I also need to know things like what MySQL or Perl modules were added to the server by other admins prior to me outside the /home directory. I don't have any documentation on it at all. If I don't preserve custom stuff like that, it could result in a dead website. Anyone got any tricks for figuring out what was added and when?5

When you need that one feature from a framework, that it just not have. So you have to use a custom version till your PR has been accepted.
I see a possible problematic future... -
I like Navicat, but why does it need to be so hard to edit the name of an entity? I'm clicking, double-clicking, triple-clicking. Most of the times nothing happens, but occassianally it suddenly works. I fail to see a pattern for when it works? Anyone have an idea how I'm supposed to talk Navicat into letting me edit entity names?5

When you need to reactivate your Twitter dev account, get surprised by amount of the shit you need to write and simply refuse it. Fuck this. At least i can focus on more fun tasks than social networks implementations.

I'm almost ashamed to ask this but...
I need help with git, not GitHub but just plain git.
So I have Linux on windows because I realised all i need is bash, not all of Linux. So I'm taking a tutorial on git because... I'm a programmer, I need to know this. So I am also doing some demo stuff on my own and... I have no clue where to put the file I want to handle with git. In pretty sure I should put it in the file containing the .git folder, which includes .bash_history, etc. But when I git init and git status, it doesn't see it, so am i doing something wrong?
To be specific the test file is in
C:///Users/...6 -
I’d like to add the FAQ schema to a page. However, when I test it google search console I get an error telling me that there is a missing field “mainentity”. Is it something I’m doing wrong? I am using SEO Yoast but after enabling it, it is showing above error in testing.
