At my old job we hired a junior developer. Turned out the junior knew more than all of us. I learnt a lot from him and it pushed me to update my knowledge and skill set!10

JUST BECAUSE I SET UP THAT ACCOUNT FOR YOU DOES NOT MEAN I KNOW WHAT YOU CHANGED YOUR PASSWORD TO.

HR girl sent a generic email with the job description and benefits of the company but forgot to set it as BCC.
Not 3 minutes passed that all the 73 recipients of the mail (me inlcuded) start replying to all making jokes about it, ranting about HR in general.
An hour later we created a Facebook page called "not-BCC guys" where we keep us posted about opening positions in our companies to bypass future HR hunting interactions.1 -
You ever sit down to start working on a project, get all your imports and variables set up, and then just completely lose all motivation to even press a key?11

Why the fuck did I set up GitHub and all the deploy scripts if your just going to fucking ignore it and edit directly on the server?!?

Goddamn I'm retarded to the next level.
Rebooted my phone a few days ago, some stuff didn't work well anymore and I'm looking for a new one which supports custom roms but I shouldn't spend too much right now so I thought I'd let it go for now.
Rebooted again last night and the network time wouldn't set properly so set it manually. Today I suddenly noticed that any app/page loading through a secure connection wasn't loading at all.
This to the goddamn point that my phone was becoming useless.
Started to search for a quick, cheap replacement supporting custom roms while debugging on and on.
I just (now) looked at the date and BAM, it hit me: I set it to one month earlier.
Mother of god I'm stupid. Brain fart to the max.14 -

I finally subscribe to Netflix and am proud of myself for finally watching shows legally.
I search for Arrested Development.
Oh, guess what, it's not available in my country (Lebanon). Gotta set up a vpn now but all I wanted was a nice funny show. I want my $12 back.12 -
My love towards Microsoft:
When install Windows 10, world's most advanced operating system, I agree to use express installation to make sure I am sharing all the information with Microsoft.
Right after installation, I chose Microsoft Edge as my default browser. Can't live without it really. I also make sure my search engine is set to Bing!
Then I continue to setup Cortana and share all my personal information with her. I install office 365 to to work with my documents and use skype to chat with my friends.
Then I install Visual studio and set all my projects to Windows Application only. I mean who uses any OS other than Windows?
It doesn't finish there. Groove Player is my first choice for listening to music, Film and TV for my videos and etc.
I also always use Microsoft Maps to find my way to work!

To improve our user's "experience" I suggested to my boss to add a status page showing...well, the current status of our services. Everybody was up for it, so I go off and implement a basic version + automated monitoring backend, get lots of positive feedback, all seems fine.
Then it starts:
Boss: "Can you get it all set up by this Saturday?"
Me: "Uh, today is Wednesday and I've never set up all the stuff needed on a proper server before"
Boss: "Well, you still have a few days. Please also contact your coworker to get it all hooked up in our launcher"
Me: "I'll try, can't make any promises though"
Contact my coworker and tell him what the plan is. I had already given him access to the repo and he is positive to get it all hooked up (I doubt he ever cloned my repo, let alone ran my code)
Spend all Friday getting my stuff set up on the production server, feeling pretty good thanks to the many tutorials.
Contact the boss Friday evening:
Me: "All up and running"
Boss: "Thanks, but we decided to go with a basic HTML page instead. We can just manually edit that, should be enough.
Me: "..."
In the end my stuff was never used, the server I set up was finally taken down a month ago. The gratitude you get when not hacking together some absolute shit that causes problems when you don't add <br/> tags at the correct places to prevent an ugly overflow, cause the coworker was too lazy to implement some form of line wrap in the launcher. I'm not saying my stuff is the best of the best, but at least it was professional looking to a certain extent.8 -
Hi guys. This is my first ever post so just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. It's really nice to be a part of your community and I will look forward to laughing my @ss of at all your posts.

My mom got cancer and passed away two years later. I had made several videos to document her life. All of that, plus photos and video of our family, lived on a backup drive that got dropped on the floor a few months after she passed away. Head crash that wasn’t discovered until it was turned on again and forever destroyed the platter. It was the largest set of photos and video I had of her. All forever gone.16

Was running tests on a big project I'm doing which still contains a fair amount of bugs but I was sure that all thresholds would succeed and the test wouldn't fire an alert.
Ran the test: alert received any fucking way.

After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... AND way too often I see online “learn programming in 30 days or learn programming in a day”... fuck off it’s all lies .. all wrong.. wrong methods wrong philosophy and I’m done with it...
I’m set on doing it this time, I’ve put it off too long, and longer I put it off the more I see shitty interviews! Time to fix it68 -

So my in-laws got a new computer 😑
Yup you know where this is going. Ok so after I transferred all of their data set them all up etc.
They wanted to use "word" and could I set it up for free for them. I said no Microsoft office is not free you lost your license and disk and your old computer is trashed so the better choice would be Google services . So I explained the value of using Google drive, docs,sheets etc.. today and told them how much better it is everything would be on their Google drive so if I got hit by a bus they could get a new computer again and still have access to their data etc... So they said great and so I did.
Two weeks later... Can you set up word for us on our computer. Me annoyed at this point " sure no problem"
I made a shortcut on their desktop to Google docs. Them: oh boy this is great see John all you have to do is click on google docs to go to word! Thanks so much!

Not only do I write software, but now I help the managers view and understand our analytics, just like in kindergarten.
Now I'm forced to help them essentially fake data so investors are satisfied 🤡🔫
"Delete metrics X, Y, and Z for now, we don't want anyone to see them!"
"Change the label of this metric to 'unique user' views! (not total!)"

Sigh.
This isn't what I signed up for.17 -
So, I set up my computer after moving and settling in.
Turns out all the jostling killed the pump on my water cooler 🙁 It now sounds like an unmaintained soviet train at full speed, and starts burning up. Poor thing.
Guess it’s time to build a new one. Though parts aren’t exactly available right now...

Pro tip: never set custom script stuff related to dns server forcing things in a root firewall app if you don't know what you're doing.
How would I know? There's a slight chance that I just went offline for a few days (mobile only) to figure this shit out 😅
All fixed now, though!21 -
I was today years old when I discovered the CSS property column-count.
Do you have any fucking idea how many times I’ve used CSS grid or flex box or BOTH when all I wanted was to make a layout with a set number of columns?
Why the fuck didn’t I know about this thing?
Did you know about this thing?17 -
Tl;Dr: Client-side validated online test
Some stupid questions in an online test.
Not all of them were coding questions, but all (yes ALL) were client-side validated and to solve the tasks all I had to do was to copy one array into another and set the time I needed for that task to a legit number.
Well at least it was an online test that doesn't required 3hours.2 -

I switched to using Ubuntu as my primary development environment about a month ago from Windows and I couldn't be happier! The initial setup was a pain in the neck (esp. display scaling issues, which Windows 10 is much better at than Ubuntu), but now that it's all set up, I'm lovin' it!6

A client of mine kept getting hit with a ransomware that was spread over rdp. So I set aside this whole week going to different sites this guy owns. Setting up a VPN tunnel and showing them how to use it. So they didn't have to rdp anymore. No more having a server with rdp facing on the outside of there network. They were all linked in like they were in the same office. I traveled around 400 miles going to all these locations. I finally got it done went back to the main office to talk to the owner. Instead of a thank first thing they say as soon as I walk in is to revert it all. We are going with a different company and they are buying new computers and server from the other company. After he tells me that he then says but when the new computers come in will you come and set them up for us because we are stupid with computers.
I reverted the stuff and walked out. Didn't say a word to him. Didn't agree to set up the new computers. Why should I set them up. He just pretty much bent me over and screwed me out of a extra couple thousand dollars.3 -

Friday I left my then current company as I felt my technical skills were not being appreciated, forget about growth. I am all set to join much nimble organization where technical skills seems to be much required. Such a relief as struggle to continue working at a place where appreciation is almost non-existent is over.

Yesterday I got to the point where all changes that customer support and backend asked for were set, and i could start rebuilding the old models from their very base with the changes and the new, disjoint data the company expansion brought.
So making the start of our main script and the first commit, only having that, had high importance... At least to me.3 -

Hoe about this.. Instead of a 'literal' game..
My co-developer suggested we make a minimal Linux OS (based off of Debian) and set it up to simulate fake hacking.
How does that sound?
It would still be a game, but would be so much cooler. >:3
The OS would be SOOPER light. And wpuld come with a custom set of 'hacking' tools. These 'tools' could also be installed on any other Linux os.
This is all theoretical, but we would love to hear your opinions.77 -

I recently moved all our tasks from grunt to gulp and integrated bower as the front end package manager. Also I wrote a lot of guides to set up standards and how-to for the team.
It's my 3rd month in my job and first major work. It took me more than a month to completely set it up and train everyone to use those new integrations.
Today all my seniors applauded my efforts. So much happiness 😀3 -

I managed to accidentally clear everybody's usernames and email addresses from an SQL table once. I only recovered it because a few seconds before, I'd opened a tab with all the user data displayed as an HTML table. I quickly copied it into Excel, then a text editor (saving multiple times!), then managed to write a set of queries to paste it all back in place. If I'd refreshed the tab it would have all gone!2

PM: "so I need you to deploy this new application to some new server. The deadline is in 2 days"
Me: "yeah I can do that, is the application ready and has been tested? Have the servers been set up properly by the IT guy?"
PM: "yep, all is set up and good"
Couple of hours later I try locating the server, only to find it didn't exist.
Me: "the server you mentioned earlier, is doesn't appear to exist?"
PM: "it definitely does, IT guy said he set it all up"
I dig around a little more, but this server definitely doesn't exist. The IT guy was on holiday for a week, so we had to wait for him to get back; delaying the release. On the morning the IT guy got back,
PM: " I though you said you set up that server for the application, we've had to delay it now!"
IT: "I just set it up this morning. Like I said in the email to you before I Ieft, I will have to do it first thing when I get back after holiday"
Turns out the PM had asked the IT guy to spin up the server, but never bothered to read his response. Assuming it was done he told the client he'd have it deployed in a couple of days.
The application was deployed successfully later that day, but not before the PM blamed us two for its delay.1 -
Set up a mail server for our office using one of those all-in-one mail server installations. It would keep denying connections every few days, so me, being the inexperienced shit I was, setup a cron job to restart the server at midnight everyday. It worked and still, to this day, it still works.1

Here's an even meaner prank. Make it just a tad more difficult on them.
Set chrome in kiosk mode, so they can't switch out of the browser.
Unfortunately 'Alt + F4' still works, but they'd have to know that ahead of time.
And then kill off `explorer.exe` so they can't press the windows key.
You can either set this up as a bat, or you can do all of this from the Task Manager.
```
chrome --chrome-frame --kiosk "http://fakeupdate.net/win10/"
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
```
And to really piss them off, set it up such that every time they reboot it just goes straight to the update screen
You can set Chrome to run as the Windows shell instead of explorer.exe. Just set the registry
```
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Shell =
[chrome path]
Regarding my last rant:
I have all my 3 Raspberrys set up for seti@home now, reporting to twitter and my own "surveillance" system for them.
The system is still ugly, the code is ugly but that's getting improved next!4 -
I'm a stupid twat. Spent at least three hours today, all wasted. I had to update a user manual and change all the branding for a system I've licencesd and going to resell to my dumb clients. There was no original to work from only a pdf. Managed to convert it to word but all the formatting was fucked. So set up some heading and paragraph styles, proper header and footer and auto generate TOC's. I did all this without actually reading it, thought I'd get the formatting and branding out of the way first. So after all that I started the job of editing it and updating it. Quickly realised that PDF I converted was for a different but similar system. Tommorow is Groundhog Day.
I salute all server admins here. I might never understand how you guys get through with all those terminals and debugging and greb and runlevel and all these weird things.
I spent two weeks trying to set up a dev server on CentOS installed on a VM. Just configuring the server took hours of trying to figure out what goes where and in the end I realized that the only thing I did wrong was the runlevel! Which I found out today is actually a thing!!!!
I thank you all for existing. Without you, us web developers would go crazy!2 -
Worked as the hardware QA for a storage company. Some tests took a week to set up and several weeks of scripts to run through for IP-SAN certifications. CEO's little pet came downstairs and asked if I could tear down some of the raid configurations and "make all of the lights on the servers blink a lot". He had some clients he was working pretty hard.
Sure... your blinkin' lights just set this release back almost a month.3 -
I was trying to set my office 365 account we got from school to gmail in my phone and this is what it wants to be able to do. In summary (Dutch screenshots):
- Encrypt all data,
- Or just erase all of it
- And watch me while they do it
Nice.3 -
I made some substantial changes to the codebase.
I run all the unit tests, as usual.
A test that has nothing to do with the feature I'm working on breaks.
"Huh that's odd, let me debug that"
I set a breakpoint with the condition set so that it pauses before the test assertion goes red.
I start the debugger and.... all tests pass
Turns out it only happens like 500/10000 times....
Today was a good day.
I was told to use in-house BitBucket runners for the pipelines. Turns out, they are LinuxShellRunners and do not support docker/containers.
I found a way to set up contained, set up all the dependencies and successfully run my CI tasks using dagger.io (w/o direct access to the runner -- only through CI definition yaml and Job logs in the BitBucket console).
Turns out, my endeavour triggered some alerts for the Infra folks.
I don't care. I'm OOO today. And I hacked their runners to do what I wanted them to do (but they weren't supposed to do any of it). All that w/o access to the runners themselves.
It was a good day :)))))
Now I'll pat myself on my back and go get a nice cup of tea for my EOD :)3 -
Taken partly from an article I just read.
Russels paradox is a problem discovered by Bertrand Russel in 1901 when studying set theory.
He describes a set that contains all sets which do not contain themselves. The set of all pornstars does not contain itself for example, so it can be include in Russel's set, as well as many others.
But what about Russel's set itself? It doesnt contain itself so shouldnt it be included as well? But that would mean it DOES include itself which means it DOESNT belong to the set. And it would keep switching like this, monotonically, forever. Hence the paradox.
If it is monotonic then where we begin in the sequence doesnt matter. So lets do away with that bugbear.
Now if russels set IS the set of all sets that dont contain themselves then we get a paradox.
However if russels set merely *has* as a single subset, all sets that dont contain themselves, then shouldnt russel's set with one level of indirection, contain itself?15 -
Seriously. Regardless of the number of tabs.
Also, it looks nice.
Downsides: You forget WHY it lags sometimes, so you get irritated, but when you remember, the irritation turns to smile.
Come back from a week's vacation, 3 apps in review. Sit down, set up Xcode, pull latest changes. Run code for the first time, tap through two screens, find a critical bug and I have to reject all 3 apps and resubmit.
5 business days away and I found an obvious bug in 5 minutes.
Someone's not doing their job... -
I think I'm getting crazy...
Yesterday evening I finally thought it was a great idea to set up Gitlab CI to let the server build (ng cli) and deploy (via FTP) an Angular5 SPA on commits on the master branch.
BUT...
The npm package "vinyl-ftp" thinks it is pretty fucking funny to just randomly stop in the middle of uploading files or just upload some files with 0 bytes in size.
WHAT THE HELL?
After some hate infested trial and error, it seems that the more parallel channels I set up, the more chance I get that all files are correctly uploaded, but never all.
If anybody here happens to be some kind of mighty byte bender and knows what to do, I'd be thankful. But I will probably try out a different client in the docker image...1 -
First day went great. Got my laptop all set up. I still have no idea what I’m doing. Imposter syndrome really set in as of yesterday. Looking at the code base and seeing all of the code made me feel stupid. I understand I won’t know the whole code base.
It’s also my first developer job. I just feel stupid. I’m super eager to learn. But I feel like I’m going to ask a lot of stupid questions as well.
Idk how to feel. I guess a fraud would be the right answer? How can I get more comfortable at my new and first developer job?9 -
I found the shelf under the "ghetto" blaster outside today. Cleaned it up and it was good to go.
Set up a personalized web front page for the news organization I worked for in the spring. Left it for the editorial staff to be tested and approved.
Didn't hear a word for almost a year when the PO asked for me to deploy it.
After a few days, the editorial staff started asking questions.
I really, really wonder what they did all those months before release... -
My new home office.
I haven't posted on DevRant in a while so thought I would share my new home office set up.
My old set up was great. Dual screen standing desk, fast desktop and great monitors.
Since having a new baby a few months back, the home office is now a nursery. My only option is to sit at the kitchen table or stand in the kitchen (I prefer standing).
So here it is, my new office. Laptop on a kids toy box, fit snugly between chopping boards and tomatoes.
And hey, I don't actually mind at all, I love my family.
Just remember that when life gives you tomatoes 🍅 ...5 -
I fucking hate the process of setting up IDEs and compilers! All the build files, cmake files, tasks, all that shit.
I undrerstand it's integral part of coding, but fuck, why does it always take so long to set up a stupid project. Just let me start coding ffs.
Sometimes I get so frustrated that I rather write a bash script or run the compiler commands in the shell instead of going through the hassle of setting all this up.2 -
Why, for the love of all that is good, does anyone still code for absolute placements in css?!
I've spent 90%+ of my time lately making some changes, which is about 20x harder than it needed to be because this app (written in the last 1-3 years) has all of the styling set explicitly. How does anyone justify that?8 -
my phone based set up. guess who provisions all the phones to our platform. then tests 9 million phones and takes the flack when users press incorrect keys or their internet goes down on site and it 'must be a provisioning issue'......this asshole.1
Okey, so the recruiters are getting smarter, I just clicked how well do you know WordPress quiz (I know it's from a recruiter, already entered a php quiz An might win a drone)
So the question is how to solve this issue:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2348617 bytes) in /home4/xxx/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line xxx
A set memory limit to 256
B set memory limit to Max
C set memory limit to 256 in htaccess
D restart server
These all seem like bad answers to me.
I vote E don't use the plug-in, or the answer that trumps the rest, F don't use WordPress4 -
Today's first day at my internship has been wasted by IntelliJ IDEA not importing a project properly.
This is my understanding of "Machine Learning" in general
There are two sets of data:
1. In first data set, all the properties are known
2. In the second set, some properties are not known.
The goal of the machine learning is to find the value of the unknown properties of the second data set.
We do this by finding (or training) a suitable machine learning model (mathematical, logical or any combination of), that in the first data set, computes the value of the properties, which are unknown in second data set, with minimum error since we already know the real value of those properties.
Now, use this model to predict the unknown properties from the second data set.3 -
Unreal Engine fun continues...
so I need to set limits to rotations within a skeletal mesh. So in other programms, like blender, you can specify a limit per axis, setting max and min angle. Makes sense, right?
Unreal Engine:
1. Let's call rotations sometimes xyz, sometimes roll pitch yaw, and sometimes swing1 swing2 and twist so that nobody knows what it is anymore.
2. IK node 1: limits? what are limits?
3. IK node 2: ok, you can set angular limits but they are all symmetrical to god knows what and to all axis apperently.
4. Physics: yeah you can define joint constraints but we give you only symmetrical constraints also
....
WHY. Were does this make any sense? One node is not like the other, and they talk rotations but use 100 different terms for them, since, hey, why the f not. And let's limit everything symmetricly so you can only set one value or have to fiddle with offsets to achive the range of movement you want.
I mean, one could just stick to xyz (or even roll/pitch/yaw, whatever) and min/max but hey, that's one extra field and then it would be easy to use. Who would want that? ....10 -
security fiasco due to a malicious npm package:
Because of a bitcoin miner present in event-stream npm module (https://bleepingcomputer.com/news/...), my entire team and I had to scan all our nodejs apps, repos and the most excruciating one, all node_modules folders across all our dev machines and servers, to see if event-stream and flatmap-stream is present, then not just delete it but update a bu**load of upstream dependencies which internally used event-stream. All due to one malicious package which was hidden several layers beneath.
And, this happened almost 8 months after the aforesaid vulnerability was first found.10 -
No, fuck you and your recommendations.
It's too time consuming to set up that blazing-fast minimalistic modular shit, because I know I'll want to configure it to perfection until I bang my head against my tiny keyboard when I have finally realised that all the config I went througu only achieved the same outcome as the 'bloated' software I was originally using.
debugging a performance issue. basically the original dev had no idea what a database was for. system was generating millions of buffered reads, and paging horribly.
to see if an id existed they had done the following:
fetch all 1 million rows into an array.
iterate the array looking for a match.
if found, set found=true
continue to iterate the rest of the array.
return found.
repeat at every login.
replaced with
return person.get(id)
I had just finished programmer school (Air Force Tech School), and was all set to wade into the world of C++ programming. Got to my first job, and they set my down at a VT220 terminal on a VAX 11/780 and said, "You are the new sys admin." Talk about disappointment. My first actual coding? I got to apply a software patch to a Gould SEL 67 that only had a Mod 40 TTY as an interface ... yes, pretty much a typewriter ... no terminal screen. I am so happy technology has advanced as much as it has.
What container data structures do all of you actually use?
For me, I'd say: dynamically sized array, hashtable, and hash set. (And string if you count that.)
In the past 8 months, I've used another container type maybe once?
Meanwhile, I remember in school, we had all these classes on all these fancy data structures, I havent seen most of them since.19 -
My company insists on working in one production environment to save time and every time I try to convince them to set up a work flow with a dev and test environment, they tell me we don't have the time...
Even after I set one up anyway as I'm scared shitless to touch production. They tell me it's faster doing it all in one environment.
One of the admins in our school is developing a digital class register. He already set up all the users but randomized the passwords to lock all students out. But he also implemented a password reset.
He was kinda pissed when he found out (the very next day) though. Now he locked us out again.
At least I can leave the school next year knowing that they'll get a sick new application -
Not my hack but when I was in university, for one test we had to find all 3 digits number that satisfied current set of criteria. Well. I'm simply SO UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE PISSED RIGHT NOW!! {>,,,<}
I'm implementing a monolithic frontend that embeds different projects which I don't want to alter if not really necessary. So I put them all into iframes, already handled all the security and auth stuff with proxies and so on and now I just want to access the body.scrollHeight property. Which is not even the probelm at all.
The fucking Problem is, that I just can't find a way to hook into any event which fires when all content is loaded and the final scrollHeight is set. Instead it just returns some default value that is set when the iframe element is loaded, but not something that is actually based on it's damn ass-fucking contents!!
Iframes are fucking pricks and I know I'll gonna go to hell for abusing them like this :Srant i'm feeling bad about it this is so wrong i hate iframes i hate cross-site-scripting just pissed as fuck2 -
Maybe I'm severely misunderstanding set theory. Hear me out though.
Let f equal the set of all fibonacci numbers, and p equal the set of all primes.
If the density of primes is a function of the number of *multiples* of all primes under n,
then the *number of primes* or density should shrink as n increases, at an ever increasing rate
greater than the density of the number of fibonacci numbers below n.
That means as n grows, the relative density of f to p should grow as well.
At sufficiently large n, the density of p is zero (prime number theorem), not just absolutely, but relative to f as well. The density of f is therefore an upper limit of the density of p.
And the density of p given some sufficiently large n, is therefore also a lower limit on the density of f.
And that therefore the density of p must also be the upper limit on the density of the subset of primes that are Fibonacci numbers.
WHICH MEANS at sufficiently large values of n, there are either NO Fibonacci primes (the functions diverge), and therefore the set of Fibonacci primes is *finite*, OR the density of primes given n in the prime number theorem
*never* truly reaches zero, meaning the primes are in fact infinite.
Proving the Fibonacci primes are infinite, therefore would prove that the prime number line ends (fat chance). While proving the primes are infinite, proves the Fibonacci primes are finite in quantity.
And because the number of primes has been proven time and again to be infinite, as far back as 300BC,the Fibonacci primes MUST be finite.
QED.
If I've made a mistake, I'd like to know.11 -
Dashlane is the worst password manager to use. I was trying to set up categories and since it does not have a simple selection box change feature I had to grab almost 100 at a time to change. Unfortunately after changing them I realized I had a duplicate and I clicked on that one to delete it. The system was still selecting all 100 (it uses a slightly gray color to show what is selected rather than a clear check box type feature) and it deleted all 100 passwords. It never asked me a question or gave me an undo feature. The interface is very difficult to handle.
Further, to set up a second user and grant them access to a large number of passwords (in this case my wife I wanted to give her access to 128 passwords), you must click them one at a time and then when you set it up they cannot get their own master password. Very cumbersome.1 -
VSCode is doing really strange things to my language server, in such variety that I'm starting to suspect that it's simply incorrect because it's very unlikely that I'd misunderstand so many distinct things at once.
- The trace level is verbose, yet VSCode absolutely spams the LS with trace: off requests
- the capability update request I used to set file watchers never gets a response even though the standard clearly states that all requests must get responses or progress reports quickly, and I'm not getting file updates even after vscode responds to a file system change. By the way, if file watching is a capability, why can't I set it in the protocol handshake with all the other capabilities?
- my semantic token provider (used for syntax highlighting) is simply ignored, no requests, no errors
- the debug console is spamming editor internal errors2 -
Ansible to set up new nodes right with DO API, announce to consul, pull docker images and join the docker swarm master.2 -
Ugh! Anyone also finds it incredibly annoying that regex notations can change between programs? And I don't mean like PCRE vs jS, those are functional differences.
I mean like... In sed, I always spend trying out all possible combos of backspacing when dealing with special notations like quantifiers {}, sets [], match groups () and so on!
Why can't it be just so that backslash anything = character literal, and not the functional counterpart.
Or at least stick to either one of the options, not like sed, where matchgroup is \(\), quantifier \{\} but a set is just []
Also wish sed supported reluctant quantifier (*?), having to use negative character set matching makes it much less readable...3 -
Not really Dev rant but bought 2 google homes. Set them up all nice and dandy and then boom.
Me: Hey google, set a reminder to buy batteries.
Home: I am sorry, I can't do that yet.
WTF ok.
Me: hey google, set a calendar reminder to buy batteries tomorrow.
Home: I am sorry, I can't add calendar events yet.
And the list goes on. WTF google. Why my phones Google assistant can do all of the above and a home assistant cannot even though they are the same thing...
I am studying an online data science course in python offered by Microsoft.
The instructor uses Surface book and also has a Mac book on his desk for backup because windows.
He uses chrome all the time for his explanation to run jupyter.
The point is even they know their tech is shit but still "Windows has set your default browser to edge" - this happens
Clib is awesome!
The general impression I had from C is that I can't really do a lot of day-to-day work in it because I kind of need to rewrite A LOT of standard functionalities from zero!
and the I came across Clib and libs like kgabis/parson, chrisdew/sds and rxi/vec, and I'm pretty much set to do all that I was doing on Node.js! -
I'm the one one in my team that uses git. In fact, they ask me to set a version control system to collaborate more efficiently... But then I'm the responsible to merge all the versions and spend a lot of time. It is burninge out...
Executed chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www on my server without even thinking.
Not long after I panicked for a few seconds while checking if everything was still working. I didn't know if this command would break stuff or not.
So glad all websites are still working.
Now I'm sitting here thinking: was I braindead while executing the command??
All I wanted to do was set the right permissions for certain folders because images couldn't be uploaded with PHP.6 -
Oh, here's an environment variable that needs to be set in order to work, not mentioned at all in the documentation, only found when your CI/CD fails, blah blah blah i'm an ignorant human who doesn't give a shit enough or have enough pride in my job to write proper documentation
In our next school-block, our class will be split in 2 groups, one goes to school during the first week, the other during the second week.
Sounds reasonable and all until you recognize, that the first week only has 3 schooldays, because of a holiday and a vacation day.
The holiday is set by law, so you can't actually do anything about it, but the vacation day can be set freely.
That means they could have just moved the vacation into the lockdown, but choose not to, because fuck students.4 -
I am really frustrated and angry when my friends only think that web development is easy you just do everything in bootstrap thats it, but really not all web apps are made in bootstrap, i make mine using css media query and thats hard to set everything manually, im so pissed that they take my job for granted and they cant even right a single decent php function , ignorant retards4
I find goals for developers to be pure busy work and almost impossible set meaningful ones.
You can't set ticket based goals, because one ticket may take a week or an hour. You can't really set learning goals, because how do you measure 'learning Svelte'? And if that was your goal, what'd be the point of the outcome?
You can set goals like, ensure all tickets have at least one unit test... but then you get tickets that need to get out yesterday and you get people knocking on your door while you're trying to create meaningful tests.
But we often have a meeting to teach everyone how to set goals, then we have to sit and invent goals that satisfy someone in the org, then twist our usual daily work into some BS about how we're working towards the goals in 1:1s and then the whole thing is forgotten by H2, if not sooner. Just to be resurrected in Jan/Feb of next year.2 -
[LANGUAGE DESIGN]
What are some interesting / unique approaches you've seen to representing generics in syntax? The only one I know is the Java/C#/Typescript way of using a separate set of parentheses and either specifying all of them or none, and I've already experimented a bit with passing them as regular arguments which works great with autocurry but every syntax option for inference adds visual noise.9 -
A list with usernames and passwords have to go from customer A to customer B, because customer A does not have the permission to set these login credentials to the productive system. Additionally, the users are technically unable to change their passwords (yes I know, it's a mess there). What should customer a do? Like except burn all my customers alive and punch them...
Programming embedded systems from scratch. All hardware, memory, timers, peripherals, etc, must be set up correctly at startup, and if you set even one single bit incorrect in any of the sometimes hundreds of 32- or 64-bit configuration registers, you are screwed. There is often no terminal that prints error messages to help you, but if you are lucky you have an (often very expensive) hardware in-circuit debugger to step through the start up code.2
You really have to decide between a full feature set of a software and deadlines. You cannot have both or in other words if you wand all features of your dreams you need infinite amount of money and time.
The funny part about this is that every student learns this in the first semester if you study anything about project management or management at all... And of course in reality pms and cXos don't even give a **** about this...
Sometimes been a software developer just made me sad 😔.2 -
Few months ago we move into a new Building, Company buys new Polycoms for 2 of the boardrooms - fancy ones with the Skype for Business and stuff.
Provision the boardroom accounts get them set up and all is working well.
Director asks if we can swap 2 boardroom phones around because their dept. just got a remote user and video calling would be awesome.
I set to work changing sign in details, provisioning accounts, assigning licenses, etc which is a long process because 365 needs to update throughout.
Finally get everything right, time to login... Failed...
Login fails on the Polycom, my laptop & an android tab - all 3 with different errors.
Decide to test account by logging into the web version in OWA - logs in perfectly.
Why Microsoft?? Why must you make it so hard? Why not just work?2 -
Watching the building maintenance guy assemble desks from kits. Thinking to myself that the company bought him an erector set. Also realizing my job is to assemble software and electronic systems. So basically a generic erector set.
People in tech fields are just building more sophisticated erector sets. No wonder we like games that let you build things in game. We all just want erector sets to be happy. -
So... I need to implement something from a spec based on a set of standards that use another set of standards based on IETF RFC.
Decide to use a library that implements the original specs. Nothing works.
Read through all of the specs, researched the standards they used, read the RFCs.
Turns out the library doesn't implement the specs properly. Looks like I'll still have to implement my own.
The concept of designing and building a testable application is apparently a very alien one to my colleagues.
1. The application cannot be used without gigabytes of data.
2. The application must be fully connected to all external systems at all times.
3. Convention over configuration is unheard of, so if you manage to achieve the above, it still takes hours to set up the damn thing.
Apes. -
Building migration day. Movers were late so ended up moving my system on my own. Once everything was set up I realized there were no chairs. The factorization shit I'm always ranting about? I decided for once to explain it visually in this handy dandy little infographic.
We're essentially transforming the product from an unsmooth set of potential factors in its factor tree, to a factorization tree that guarantees first that the set of potential factors are all 2, 3, 5, and a or b of p, and second, that all the factors are *smooth integers* of a or b.
This is basically what Adi Shamir was trying to do with TWINKLE and TWIRL, despite checking a hundred thousand+ potential primes.
I did it in four.7 -
just read about Zeno's paradox and realized, this is our life!!
The client sets requirements, we code them within n time. by the time we finish it, the client sets new requirements. so we code them again, but by the time we finish it, more requirements are set.
will we ever be able to finish it all? that is the paradox.
Fighting to get a code repository up and running at my current company.
There is no central repository at all; people use their own local files and hope nobody else made changes. At least one product had to be retired because nobody could find the firmware source. I didn't even bother with git, I set up an SVN and showed them how basic and easy it was to use. They all agreed it was simple, and then continued to not use it. Facepalm.3 -
So I decided to buy a new graphic card to fully enjoy my PC games. Once I set it up it sounded like the fans were working too hard,so I decided to open the computer case and clean inside.
And now it doesn't boot anymore. Nothing at all on the screens.
I have enjoyed my new graphic card during one hour all in all. Frustration is high.8 -
I started thinking on how ML can help in hacking but before that I got another doubt on how you can be a effective hacker and started looking into all ways of being a hacker but later convinced myself that hacking is not just a tuxedo jacket to wear it's more of you watching duncrick movie multiple times and understanding what exactly the movie all about so any leads for resources to cultivate that mind set of being a hacker and any links/material to follow and practise would be of great help1
So I'd like to see some opinions on different editors and IDEs.
I personally use Atom, and I really dig all the functionality and packages it has available. What do you use and why? So I am struggling with a SQL Query for my Database lecture.
This is the Table Layout:
Users(id:integer, reputation:integer, display_name:string,
day:integer, month:integer, year:integer, location:string,
up_votes:integer, down_votes:integer, age:integer)
This is the task:
Show the set of users who have the highest reputation and the lowest down_votes
than any other user. HINT: there is no user that is better than all other users on each of the
criterion individually. Thus, you need a query that can eliminate users that are worse on both
criteria than some other user (in Economics your query will return what is known as the Pareto
Set).
I have looked up the Pareto Set but I am not really sure how to implement it into SQL.
So does any one of you know how to implement this or could anyone lead me into the right direction?
Help is very appreciated :)12 -
We're supporting hardware for a new client now. A guy on my team has been working directly with the client to set up access for us all. He sent us all an email yesterday, asking us to update a ticket with our, "domain name and passphrase."
Ok, so for past 1 whole day I am trying to make vhost work on my brand new laptop, running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS... When I installed OS, I've set hard disk encryption, and on top of it - user home folder encryption. Don't ask me why I did both.
Setting up vhost is simple and straight forward - I did it hundreds, maybe thousands of times, on various Linux distros, server and desktop releases alike.
And of course, as it usually happens, opposed to all logic and reason - setting up virtual host on this machine did't work. No matter what I do - I get 403 (access not allowed).
All is correctly set - directory params in apache config, vhost paths, directory params within vhost, all the usual stuff.
I thought I was going crazy. I go back to several live servers I'm maintaining - exactly the same setup that doesn't work on my machine. Google it, SO-it, all I can see is exactly what I have been doing... I ended up checking char by char every single line, in disbelief that I cannot find what is the problem.
And then - I finally figured it out after loosing one whole day of my life on it:
I was trying to setup vhost to point to a folder inside my user's home folder - which is set to be encrypted.
Aaaaaand of course - even with all right permissions - Apache cannot read anything from it.
As soon as I tried any other folder outside my home folder - it worked.
I cannot believe that nobody encountered this issue before on Stackoverflow or wherever else.9 -
I am following the component docs from Elastic but not sure how each component integrates with each other or how to set the mongo connection (DB is not local)5 -
Print screen someone's desktop and set as the background. Then move all icons off the desktop.
Have fun watching them trying to click on their desktop1 -
Windows 10 forced update resetted all of my IIS settings at work. Took me half a day to set everything right again..1
Fuck me Amazon cert manager is so fucking complicated. Just do it all for me; why do i have to providing a route 53 entry (TECHNICALLY 2 IF I WANT MY NAME CORRECT) BEFORE I set up my load balancer??!! I should be able to test a load balancer first and then add on tls, not have to get a cert all set up and then sit on my fucking ass when the load balancer shits itself1
Anybody here work with Firebase before?
I have a web app (react) that writes to a Firestore DB and a mobile app (react-native) that reads from the DB. As of right now, in my Firebase console I have the project set up as a web app project. Is this ok even though I’m reading the DB through a mobile app? Let me know if I’m not clear at all. Thanks!5 -
I love and hate javascript. I set out to do a fully ajax/state driven form interface that operates with multiple interdependent data objects which all extend a base class.
React/Angular may have been a better call but I just didn't have time so I needed to rapid prototype in jquery /vanilla JS.
I'm in the midst of learning and refactoring all the ajax calls to promises and then to async/await, so it's a huge learning experience...
Meanwhile I've got to build objects to represent the data on the backend which is all legacy OScommerce/PHP
Hell of a ride. -
Damn what the holy shit, our college curriculum has not changed their syllabi since last decade and they've been teaching us J2ME mobile development,
After all the rant and shit I made an assignment to find out the content type at classroom is only set to question/answer
Damn they can't even post an assignment correctly either1 -
so... if someone is learning php, then all of their pages would be php scripts which needs the php engine to execute, aka a complete server set up. therefore no chance of sharing their progress or cool mini projects to the world by setting up a static github page.
Why didn't anyone tell me about that :/1 -
I've been trying to understand why my browser does not set the cookies I'm getting from my login api for the last 4 hours and I'm losing my mind, pls help. My frontend is a create-react-app on localhost:8888 and my api is a django rest framework on localhost:8000. I'm using fetch() for all the communication to the api11
So I am a mentor at a coder-dojo, basically every 2 weeks a bunch of software developers meet in order to help kids from 8 to 17 with their first coding projects.
This one time the mother of one of the kids came up to me and askes me on how she, no technical background at all, could build her own website with a small webshop.
She told me she heard about wordpress and asked me if I could help her set it up at her Laptop.
Took us quite some time to set it up and after I was finished, she seriously asked if creating the homepage would be as hard as setting up..1 -
When your replacement that your training didn't understand configuration management and just makes changes on one server instead of making a change set and deploying it to all the servers 😭
I am a stupid monkey that spilled coffee all over his keyboard, and now it seems to be EOL.
Looking for some "inspiration" - what keyboards (and mice, might also just buy a whole new set) are you guys using?9 -
so I got the reverse proxy all set up on my server, forwarding all the right headers to enable SSL behind reverse proxy. awesome! my only problem remaining is, since nginx only handles HTTP/S traffic, I can't connect to my gitlab instance via ssh. anyone know how I can proxy this traffic as well to enable ssh connection for git?2
When do you use parameters in your Dto/ViewModel constructors?
I'm trying to explain to a senior developer, that we don't need to have all parameters for all properties,
we only need it to set default/private fields.3 -
I think I broke our intern.
All I did was set up an alias command to copy a war file. It of course has all the error handling and crap -
Learning C# coming from Java...
What's the fuss about properties? As i see it, theyre only usefull for binding, as else they just work as syntetic sugar instead of getter/setter methods.
But properties are also limited to give response back, like a successfull set, unless you start throwing exceptions..
And if a set property has if(age>5){this.age=age} then if i pass the property a 4, you will never know as a user that it failed (again, unless you start throwing exceptions)
Im kinda feeling like i want to use get/set methods until i need to bind, then of course use property ?? Am i all off here?25
