At the ranters who use Vim as their primary IDE. How do you manage to get some autocompletion working?
I want to be one of the cool kids and use Vim for coding but I am so used to a good autocompletion like the one IntelliJ offers.
I want to be able to browse through every method of an object or function of a module. But Vims build in engine sucks ass and YouCompleteMe doesnt seem to work that good either (only tested with Javascript, Typescript and Elm). They dont show all the correct identifiers but they do show some other random stuff.

How do you guys manage to be productive? How do you make it show only the usefull stuff?

Small feature request, but I think it would be cool if you guys could add some devducks with colored capes as well as keep the classic yellow duck as an option inside Desk Items (L).

I know its impractical to add text for obvious readability issues, but I think the base color of the actual capes would be cool, you know to match your current devduck irl :) Maybe keep the classic duck at +100 and have a higher ++ for the devducks with capes? Anyways, I'll just leave this here...

Soooo I have greatly underestimated the value of the shit you can learn in Kaggle, both from the projects that people do and from the learning section that they have. I wouldn't exactly classify them as beginner level or for complete newbies.

By default, if you wanna go and learn about ML then be trady to have some mathematical background to at least the level of Linear algebra, statistics and some basic calculus, everything else can be learned as you go along.

But ye, shit is fucking cool man, they have sooo many cool projects in it. I learned from academic shit in uni and a fuckload of books, but i dig this approach sooo much more.

Does anyone really like JavaScript as a language?

I mean i like working with it because you can build a lot of creative and cool stuff with it, but i find the language itself to be hacky, wierd and too complex.

A while ago, i decided to finally learn a bit about the web stack (especially django) and create my first web page. The image shows what it currently looks like.

I am actually very happy with the result. It will be my personal little Home automation software, with progressive apps etc. It runs on the pi plattform and can currently switch an IO to a Relais, which in turn switches on a light.

The applications of this are really endless, which is quite cool and leads me to do more stuff at my home with it. So dear devRant: Does anybody know of some nice hackable light bulbs/spots for my home that i can use? Or other cool hackable hardware that could be applied?

I'm doing a code review on a huge feature, basically touching every part of our authorization logic, and man... It's like my colleague writes his code to be as hard to read as possible. He's 60+ and you'd think he'd have learned how to write good and clear code, but nope. "Let's make it cool cool and I look like I'm a genius. And if I can spend 3 keystrokes less on a function I'm happy". Fuck me.

A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Arch Linux on my main computer and the upgrade is incredible. I knew it would be, of course - I already had Linux on my laptop. But wow, on a dual monitor setup, and with the motivation to set it up nicely, it's brilliant.

My question is, what's everyone's favourite Linux distro, and why? Pictures of your desktops would be cool.

I think it'd be cool if we put together ctf events, so people could learn bash, PowerShell, etc., by solving puzzles. It'd be a nice collaboration, and people can learn at the same time.

My (younger) brother used to be way better than me at programming. He was making all this cool stuff (mainly Arduino).

I learned to program to make cool stuff like him basically. I learned Python to start since someone told me it would be easier to start with (it was).

I made a bunch of small programs (shitty things to help with homework, text based game, etc).

Eventually took programming classes in university.

Now I do C++ for a living.

I feel like premium content should be available via paid (ad-free), free (ads), or through web user small scale crypto mining, at the users discretion obviously.

I don't get why we have to have these ad blockers and ad creators trying to one up each other. The *option* for low-performance crypto mining while on the page would be cool to have as a choice.

Have you ever wanted a feature to be a certain way but you had to settle with something easier and less cool/impressive?

I just had to and it’s very dissatisfying.

Each time I try to study someone else’s (cool) JS files, to learn from it, there are always some funky function calls that throw me off. I wish the person could be beside me and just walk me through why they did what they did at each step.

It’s just tough sometimes. I see all these cool projects on GitHub and I go, “let me try to analyse it,” and then I see all these properties too. Sometimes I feel compelled to just check the API but it seems like I’d be going into a blackhole of never-ending API depths.

There will always be times when you will need to understand/modify horribly written code, or have to work with a fellow "programmer" who is clueless about what programming actually is.

Today is my last coursework submission. I've touched on a lot of topics I never thought I would be able to do/even thought about. I like data science, but I just don't feel so passionate about it now. I just want to ditch coursework and do cool shit, but I never find the time.

I wish we could stop to push candidates to do TDD or even asking questions about it during interview. This thing is a lie, has always been and will ever be. It is cool for small coding exercises but nothing else.

guys, I've spent 3 days trying to deploy a small site with a nodejs API on ubuntu/apache with a reverse proxy.

I was cursing everything and everyone when I realised the node app was listening on port 1337 while the proxy was set to 3117

launched major version today which has been in development nearly 2 years. daily bugfix builds for the next month or so until it's stable as we slowly rollout one cluster at a time. going to be my first time on production bugfix duty. man it feels cool to be a full time software engineer.

what would you guys think of a user-controlled news app? like people would posts stories, and users would control what content would be featured in their respective categories. then you would have a feed of all the categories you follow. story integrity will be controlled by users approval and by corroboration.

Started doing web with POCO in C++. Could not be as pleased as now. Syntax is cool, framework is cool, GNU Makefiles are cool, aclocal isn't, but... Go to hell automake. I am happy, helping a friend and enjoying what I feel as the chilliest programming language is becoming the way I do web.

Here is what I don't understand about elementaryOS: it's supposed to be targeted at users who aren't tech savvy. But in order to perform any major upgrades you need to reinstall the entire operating system.
