Was joking with my sister about who has more steps. She had done more steps so far, so I said that I would walk 20 times around the McDonald's, where we were going to eat. The Humble bundle currently offers a bunch of Linux related books. Some gimp shit, and some blender shit.
The thing is, they have the Linux Programming interface by Michael Kerrisk for 30 dllrs(in total for everything)
Ladies and gents, that right there is a DAMN good deal. That book is fucking gold. Used it during Uni, didn't get to keep it. 30 bucks for a bunch of pdfs, ebook and mobi plus a book that for itself is worth more? Shiet son. It will pump up both your Linux and C chops I would tell ya that much.

Up until then the machine would talk and I would listen.
Now all of a sudden I was able to tell it to do whatever I want it to do. -
Boss wants me to become lead developer on a huge project; I still consider myself Junior and feel like there is still more for me to learn before I can even accept something like this. The company is amazing and I would love to step into this role but I fear that I will only disappoint.

Thought I would only do frontend-stuff when I started working. Boy I was wrong. I thought it would be easy coding in a real company and not just in schoolprojects, boy I was way out in the blue. But when your code works and is actually used by people, I never could've imagined that would feel so good!4

Today I learned about binary encoding formats alternative to JSON such as Google Protocol Butter.

I am so fucking lost.
I literally have zero expectations from life for now and future.
There was a time when I had so much clarity in my life. Rather, I was known for it.
Folks used to reach me out for guidance and my approaches even worked for others.
I was goal oriented and biased towards action. Failing and learning from it, I used to make things happen and with constant feedback kept progressing.
While none of that has changed, I still feel lost and numb. No, I am not depressed or suffering through any mental illness. I am physical active and able to feel the happiness.
But the recent incident with a narcissistic, left me emotionally handicap. I can no longer feel any kind of love or affection. I overcame the damage done and healed myself.
But now, I am done. Even if I engage with anyone for a relationship it would be mostly for sex. I can care for people around me and be affectionate towards them but when it comes to an intimate relationship, I feel it's not something I can do in this lifetime. I tried multiple times but failed.
These days, all I am doing is putting my heads down and working like crazy. Never in my life I worked more than 10 hours in an entire week. Now, I work 10+ hours everyday. During that time, I am highly productive.
And in my free time, I am busy housekeeping different life problems. Either paying bills, figuring out an insurance, planning some investment, or making some kind of life decision.
It's draining me. I feel as if I am losing sanity. But that's the only thing I am able to do.
Maybe it's the lockdown effect. Maybe some damage is yet to be healed.
But I got nothing better to do. I have some good ideas. Not those hipster-ish disruptive Million dollar ideas, but decent enough to solve a problem for a strong use case.
However, all of this is becoming overwhelming these days. Because decision making is complex and difficult task. It can make or break the future.
As of now I am confused how should I go about pursuing two of the important projects that I want to accomplish.
1. Migrating out of Google ecosystem. Is it even practically possible for my use case? What are the alternatives? Planning to opt in for a paid cloud storage so have to factor in that aspect as well.
I want to keep this new setup only for official use like bank and government stuff. Maybe family and close friends. Then have current ids for public logins and sharing it with retards whom I can block or ignore if they harass me. The research is overwhelming but having a structured setup gives insane amount of efficiency when life is spam free.
2. Migrating my Pihole and OpenVPN setup out of Digital Ocean to GCP. Primarily because $5 is a lot of amount for my computational requirements and Google has used my data enough, for me to use the free tier.
However, there isn't a simple script for a tech noob like me, to go ahead and setup something. I did find a Github repository but the documentation is kind of outdated so RTFM failed for me.
I don't know whether to pursue my start-up or let it go and focus on moving to Europe.
It's just so fucking stupid to even exist. And let's not forget taxes. Bloody taxes.21 -

If I could travel back in time, I would would slap myself for doing this. Although I remember, why I did this, because of many min()/max() operations that I needed. I wanted to keep the code, so that I would know, which code piece belonged to which part, but man ... is that badly written! Nowadays with Clean Code style, I would certainly do it differently.

I think software development would be immensely difficult if there were no internet and you would have to search everything in a physical library whilst left to your intellectual wit. That would require great skills.
I used to do it like that back in 1994, but of course now I don't have the time for that unless it would be on a hobby project.9 -
This is how Scrum works:
Three coworkers are in a Scrum Team. One of them is also the Product Owner and the Scrum Master... The PO decided this Monday that they need to add a new feature for the Tuesday night release, which is estimated at 80 hours. I told the other two in front of a manager that this is not scrum. There are times where I would be debugging during one of my (high school) classes, and I would finally find that bug that I've been looking into for days, and I would then involuntarily yell out something like "Oh! That shouldn't be there!", and everybody would start staring at me. It really pissed off the teachers.1

Lesson Learned: Don't ever be so ambitious that you are no longer realistic about your abilities. I remember when I started out, I would give unbelievably short TTC estimates for medium/hard tasks that would undoubtedly take some time.3

A post today made me think about this interview I had about a year ago... I shall tell you all about it.
Went to a hiring event for this company everyone was cool but this one guy (who would have been my boss) was a total arrogant, douchey, know it all.
So anyways cue interviewing with him a week later. He says if I give you task A, B, C and they need to be done by the end of the week in which order do you do them. (Note: he literally said abc not actual tasks)
Me: I don't really know how to answer that question without more information.
Him: Well I like to see how people answer it... So think about it for a second.
Me: Ok I guess if doing one task would help me do the next task faster I would do it in that order. Like I can use code or concepts from C to do B faster.
Him: What if A would take 2 days and B and C would take 1 day.
Me: I don't see how that would influence the order I do them in.
Him: Would you complete one task after another or switch between them or do see simultaneously.
Me: It would depend on my previous answer and what would be the fastest way to get them done but without more info I literally cannot give you an answer of like I would do B, C, A.
Him: Would you do the longest task first or the shorter tasks.
Me: I don't know I guess it depends on if it would help you or somebody else move forward with something if I got a particular task or the shorter tasks done first.
So cue more of this kind of back and forth about arbitrary details about undefined theoretical tasks for like 10 minutes.
Suffice is to say I didn't get the job and I'm glad.7 -

I want to get into game dev, but don't know which engine to choose, Unreal or Unity. Both would be free, because Unreal is free for students. I already know C++, but I think it depends more on the API than the language itself. Maybe I would like to create games for Android too.

I am planning to learn machine learning and deep learning. I am quite comfortable programming in c++ and python, what would you recommend would be a nice starting point with more attention towards practical stuff.8 -
When I was younger I went to computer camps. We would basically play LAN games the majority of the time.
One year we played Jedi Knight Dark Forces II.
This game was super easy to hack since you would just save a local version of the file and it would override the game.
There was a god mode that you can download which would give your character 1 million in health and never die.
I then modified it so I had a health of 500. This way if I wanted to prove that I could be killed I would just call the kill command 4 times to bring my life back down to 100. -

Hi friends and others. There is a task I want to automate. I want to convert .docx files to .pdf and then minify those. Are there JavaScript libraries or npm- packages which can do that? Because I would like to use Gulp or Webpack for this task. I would not mind if external APIs are involved, but I would rather not use those if not required.

So, there is this guy, who asked me whether I want to join him in a project. I asked him what kind of project and what would each of us do. The project was Cryptocurrency Arbitrage and I would code the bot to do the stuff and he would design the logic to even out the money after the transfer. And we would get two thirds of the money and I would get the rest. I haven't said no yet, but ... -
Firstly, my main wish is to work in the office. I don't like remote stuff and all that. I would like to have a job where you have to go every day except weekend at a certain time and be there for example 7 hours. I would love to have a good who will tell me what to do, I like to listen to people. I would also want to have a secretary, Im not organized. I would like to do either .NET development, Web Development or 3D modeling. If im working .NET, I would like to work in Microsoft. During my high school days, I pitched an idea of an Antivirus. That would “hack” any origin computer that was being used to hack the destination computer.
Another idea I had was to deploy a virus, which was meant to be harmless, and would stay dormant while it replicated itself. Once in enough systems, I would “command” it to delete a certain photo from every computer that would ever exist.

Ok so I have never really used motors before so I have no idea what I am doing, but I was wondering how to calculate how much weight a motor could move.
Say I have a trolley that weights ~300kg, and I attached a motor to each of its 4 wheels how would I calculate if it would move/what would be needed to move it, and how would I know the RPM of the motors. (Friction can be ignored and it would be on a flat surface)
Also, if I added 4 more motors to turn the wheels, since its just moving a small wheel and it wont be supporting the weight, could it be weaker than the other motors, or would the force that the wheel is experiencing from the trolleys weight effect the turning of the motor.1 -

I would like to learn how to better automate workflows. I find it fascinating that you can control one program with another. Especially GUI apps. I have automated apps before to reduce human error and boring data entry work. It would be amazing to take this to a new level. Perhaps even automate specific programming work.
Machines programming machines would be fascinating as well. -
I would have never guessed when I my steam deck that my laptop and desktop would die the the same week my grandpa would die. An I would be tasked to make a memorial video for him. But the steam deck is truly the best console ever even does video editing better then I ever expected.

An interviewer asked me what work-life balance meant to me
I said something like it was essential, and I would like to set boundaries and start and end work at set times if possible.
They then asked if I would fix something at 2 am, I sort of jokingly said that I would if I could wake up (probably shouldn't have said that lol)
And so they asked what if in case I was on-call, and I said I would if I was on-call
After this interview, I had one tech interview (that went well), but then I didn't hear back from them.8 -
I would work at an animal shelter. I would need a big house though because I would take so many animals home

I am still in college and will be going for a job next year. I want to learn Java with all the best practices associated with it. What I would like to do is do a large enough project that would enable me to learn industry standards and use the best practices(effective java etc) in actual code.
So I would ask the devrant community to give some project ideas that would use these practices extensively. I don't know if I am making myself clear here, but any help would be appreciated.7 -

I am thinking about installing a Linux Distribution on my Pc... I can't decide between Ubuntu or Debian. Which one would you recommend for a Linux beginner or would you recommend a complete different distro? :-)6

A mind computer interface that acts like an extension of my psyche. Allows information access, tool access, and gets rid of mundane interfaces like keyboard and mouse.
I would like this interface to be non-intrusive with the ability to remove. I would hate for it to mess with my driving. In that case it would be nice if it overlay-ed data for a hud while driving. Like just having the speed be an overlay would be nice.
I wonder if such an interface would make our already lazy mental skills even lazier? Or would it invigorate our learning?2 -
Sometimes I feel like going back in time and changing some things. If life would have a debugger would know when I am doing a mistake.3

the worst person I worked with was back in school. he would make no contribution to our work and would have a go at me if I did something wrong and whenever I fixed a bug he would act as if he knew the solution the entire time. it was so frustrating2

I am getting my first apartment next Saturday, and it's awesome. And I was thinking of buying a great desktop computer because my laptop is getting old and I want a real desk with a real modern computer, also as a symbol of my new life coming. It would have costs me around 1300€, but guess what, I just spent that yesterday to pay the real estate agency, the deposit, and the first rent for that apartment 😭 I guess I'll have to wait again for that new pc...10

I had a splash of inspiration. I would like to develop a method for analyzing unknown bitstreams of data. The method would involve determining the format of the data by trial and error machine learning algorithms. This would allow determining data types and byte formats and meanings of streams of data. Could be useful in data forensics. I would call the method: heuristic translation machine learning. I am currently developing code that does this. It will be fun to learn about reinforcement algorithms.5

- running a private space shipyard

And last, if nothing works, I would open up a deli on Mars. The robots would make the food anyway, I would probably only program the menu and fix them when they malfunction. -

If I would be a network administrator , I would troll everyone by creating 2 networks, one called x-fast and another called x-slow. Obviously I would reverse them so the one called slow is actually fast, and the fast one is slow. So I can benefit myself from a private network with no one on it because it's "slow" :-)

However, the reality is that it is still a grind with more distractions. It is easier to get sidetracked. Not like how I would have hoped it would be. -
I know it made sense resource wise, but being on constant support/incident tickets, bug fixes, out of hours & weekend deployments for the past like four months really drains you.
Though, now I have the opportunity of completing half a sprint on my own, while dealing with the ongoing incident tickets.
