What if God is actually an average developer working for a company which creates worlds and at first it all ran fine but then the support period expired and wasn't renewed and now shit's hitting the fan and nobody gives a fuck.25

Hey everyone! As most of you probably already know, months back we added the ability to change your username on devRant (every 6 months, via settings). We've had some people recently express a desire to change their username again, beforr that period, for whatever reason.
I just reset the 6 month period for everyone, so if you had changed your username previously, you can now change it again.
Please keep in mind that when you change your username, any @mentions of you in comments no longer link to your profile.
If you have any questions, feel free to let me know!19 -
When self-proclaimed Wordpress-wanna-be-webmaster-wizards of the universe ask me why it takes us so long to finish a project and that he can do anything we do in WP in a short period of time:9

You guys ever spent a longer period of time on finding a bug and once you found it, first go grab a coffee/snack to allow that bug some final moments?
Like some sick kind of power play along the lines of “I will fix you at a time and location of my choosing”6 -

TLDR; I just screwed a production server and rendered it useless!!!
Long story:
I went to install a product that we built at the customer's site, and was given a Linux running server, to deploy our app.
I work in windows, and barely know the basic Linux commands.
So I look at the files in the home directory, and see that the are a lot of files, so I ask the customer if it is ok that I move all the files to a separate directory.
He agrees, and me thinking that I am smart, proceed to enter the following commands in the terminal:
mkdir old
mv /* old
Of course I got an error that I don't have permission so my next command was:
sudo mv /* old
And that was the end of that computer.
The amazing part of the story is that as soon as it happened, I understood so much about Linux.
The file structure, sudo, the power of the terminal, aliases and so much more...15 -
Long ago, like 5 years, I made an app for my EX GF in symbion to track her periods. Application predict the next date when your period will come based on her cycle.
How ever after 2 month of usage she told me that application was flashing that she is pregnant. She scared shit out of herself and made me sacred a hell as well.
Later i find out that the variable i used to store number of days between last period and current date was not capable of storing value more than 40, i don't know how, and triggers negative value to be shown.
Early days of my programming, Shit happens.8 -
In my short time of working in the IT industry, I have seen my co-workers treated badly during their notice period before resignation.
The question is why!!??
So, today when I found this story, I knew it will stay with me forever ..14 -
In a programming contest, I forgot how to round numbers in Java, an I needed a 3 number rounding, so I multiplied the number by 1000, then sum 0.5 and convert it to integer so the decimal part would be gone, finally, just print the number except the 3 last digits as a string, put a period and print the other 3 digits.
I must say I'm not proud of that.5 -
Interviewer: We keep having devs take off for other opportunities after a short period of time. We need someone loyal who will be sticking around for the long haul. Oh wait, you only have one dev company you’ve worked for on your resume? Yeah that’s not good, we only hire devs who have worked for lots and lots of companies.
Dev: …9 -

I am leaving my job from a very big company with very high paying package for doing my own startup.
1 month notice period on.10 -
Who the fuck thought this was a good order of putting time period indicators in their UI?
How is it even sorted? Not alphabetically, not in duration.9 -
So I quit my job and am currently serving my notice period. I do the hiring for my team (lead dev). Today I got an email from a recruiter trying to recruit me for my current role ....6
-
Today I quit my job lol.
In my two previous stories I told you guys about a job offering I got, and after a few more incidents in my old job, I decided I take it.
No, this is not an april fools joke, though it felt quite bad to tell my team lead that I quit on april fools day.
Due to notice period I'll begin my new work at first of july this year, can't wait <33 -
I resigned today 😍
No more dealing with shit architecture and experimental beta technologies being used in production which went down constantly 😎
Back to good ol' product development! 🤩
One month notice period to go3 -
Stop fooling yourself by thinking that the hurry & pressure will eventually go away if you work overtime & stretch yourself to heroics weekly. They won't, and they never will (and even shouldn't). Focus on building sustainable habits that propel you towards your goals day by day, and don't give up until you're where you want to be. Period.2

Old rant about an internship I had years ago. It still annoys me to this day, so I just had to share the story.
Basically I had no job or work experience in the field, which is a common issue in the city I live in - developer jobs are hard to come by with no experience here. The municipality tried to counter this issue by offering us (unemployed people with an interest in the field) a free 9-month course, linked with an internship program, with a "high chance" of a job after the internship period.
To lure companies to agree to this deal, the municipality offered a sum of money to companies who willing to take interns. The only requirement for the company was that they had to offer a full-time position to the interns after the internship, as long as there were no serious issues (ex. skipping work, calling in sick, doing a bad job etc.).
On paper, this deal probably makes sense.
I landed an internship fairly quickly at a well-known company in the city. The first internship period went great, and I got constant positive feedback. I even got to the point where I ran out of tasks since I worked faster than expected - which I was fairly proud of at the time.
The next internship period was a weird mix between school (the course), and being at the company. We would be at the school for the whole week, expect Wednesdays where we could do the internship at the company.
When I met at work on that first Wednesday, the company told me that it made no sense for me to meet up on those days, as I was only watching some tutorial videos during that time, while they were finding bigger tasks for me - which in turn required that they got some designs for a new project. They said that due to the requirements they got from the municipality (which I knew nothing about at the time), they couldn't ask me to work from home - and they said it would "demoralize" the other developers if I just sat there on Wednesdays to watch videos. Instead, they suggested that I called in sick on Wednesdays and just watched the videos at home - which is something I would register to the workplace, so I wouldn't get in trouble with the school. It sounded logical to me, so I did that for like 5-6 Wednesdays in a row. Looking back at this period, there's a lot of red flags - but I was super optimistic and simply didn't notice.
After this period, the final 2 months of the internship period (no school). This time I had proper tasks, and was still being praised endlessly - just like the first period.
On the last day of the internship, I got called to a meeting with my teamlead and CEO. Thinking I was to sign a full-time contract, I happily went to the meeting.. Only to be told that they had found someone with more experience.
I was fairly disappointed, and told them honestly that I would have preferred if they had told me this earlier, since I had been looking forward to this day. They apologized, but said that there was nothing they could do.
When I returned for the last school period (2 weeks), the teacher asked me to join him for a small meeting with some guy from the municipality. Both seemed fairly disappointed / angry, and told me what still makes me furious whenever I think about it.
Basically after my last internship period, the company had called the municipality, telling them that I had called in sick on those Wednesdays, and was "a lazy worker", and they would refuse to hire me because of that.
I of course told them my side of the story, which they wouldn't believe (unemployed person vs. well-known company).
Even when I landed a proper job a few months later, the office had called my old internship for a reference - and they told the same story, which nearly made them decline my application. This honestly makes me feel like it's something personal.
So basically:
Municipality: Had to pay the company as the deal / contract between them was kept.
Company: Got free money and work.
Me: Got nothing except a bad reputation - and some (fairly limited) experience..
Do I regret taking the course? .. No, it was a free course and I learned a lot - and I DID get some experience. But god, I wish I had applied at a different company.
Sorry for my bad English - it's not my first language.. But f*ck this company :)8 -
The only person responsible for the server maintenance has put in his resignation period in.
The other person that has access to the servers does not know the difference between production & lab.

Programming made me fucking fat as fuck.
I went to Holmes Place after a 2 month no gym period to get counseling.
I have a whoppin 25% body fat and it makes me fucking depressed.
Fuck sitting in front of computers and programming for hours. Fuck snacks and fuck stayibg up late. That shit is bad for you.16 -
Unspoken rule @ my work: if anyone asks if there is any specification and/or documentation available, they owe beer to everyone in hearsight... So there was a time we got around 5 new hires in a period of 2 days and guess what?! After a day or two it was a real problem to stay sober for the rest of the week. // Yes, some of them did not learn the first time 😂😂😂5

Let's do photorealism they said,
It'll look beautiful they said,

NO!
Fuck it, we're going with low poly. I'm not rendering one fucking tree, for three god damn hours!
(That's presuming that it doesn't crash during that period)
And yes I know it doesn't actually look that photorealistic, but hey, give me a break I just started. Plus I don't even wanna know how long it would take to render if it was done to look really fancy.13 -
Today I got pulled into a meeting with my 'boss'. Apparently the UX/CX person went and bitched to his bosses about the developers not following the UX/CX designs.
We missed two things. The font size for a 3 letter word was slightly off, and we missed a period at the end of some text.
I wish I was joking.6 -
Fuck Coronavirus and fuck the person, responsible for the outbreak.
The local commiccon, linux-days and my working-period at a location on the other side of Germany got canceled.
My complete weekend just got annihilated.11 -
My company cut 30% of our salaries in March 2020 until October 2020 and promised to give them back later
we just got the call saying we are never gonna get them but hey you are getting shares that are worth double the value ... but with a 2 year vesting period...
i feel i lost so much well earned money....11 -
Team during retro: management is full of shit, what can we do about it?
Me, already during notice period: I have some ideas1 -
I just started training 3 weeks ago,
I have to accomplish some knowledge during the training period or the company won't let me stay, when I told the coworker that is sitting beside me, he told me don't worry, as long as you want this job, we will help you learn everything in order to get what you want. -
40.5 hours of overtime this pay period, and about another thirty coming next pay period.
What should a young Algo do with such funding??8 -
I just bought an iPhone 6 for cheap so I can try out this apple stuff people seem to like... A couple of hours in I and I really wonder what made them not have a period on the main page of the keyboard...10

Coding competitions.
Expectations: a period of intense coding, satisfaction from solving problems, finding neat solutions.
Reality: five FUCKING HOURS spent staring at the screen doing literally nothing, because none of your ideas would fit the time limit and you have NOT A SINGLE FUCKING CLUE WHERE TO EVEN START.

I took wk119 to clean my desk and make my wife happy (for a short period of time).
WFH Setup has been rearranged shortly and is not finished. Most of the soldering/Arduino/Pi/drone stuff has been removed and will get a seperate workbench soon.
Lightning is not finished as i plan to reinstall the smart lightstripes again.
But hey , cleaning the desk is enough for this week :-)3 -
An ex-colleague got accused stealing company property (soda) that he bought with his own money.
He had put his own soda near the other soda of the company (a different brand they never bought). He went home one day and took 1 bottle with him. During that time period, the company offered free drinks (non-alcoholic of course).
WHY WERE THEY EVEN WATCHING THE CAMERAS15 -
Sony updates the firmware on their wireless headphones over Bluetooth. For TWO FUCKING HOURS. If, for some reason, the connection was to break during that period, - perhaps because Bluetooth isn't a reliable connection and was never meant to be - then the device will turn itself off (as it does when it loses connection), and it will try to boot into the half-installed firmware the next time you turn it on.20

Super stoked. Hubby just gave me this. Now to binge read and see how much I can learn and understand in a short period 😁😁🤩🤩3

COBOL is something I use at work. Typically, you see IF blocks like this
IF condition
Stuff
END-IF.
But the END-IF part if actually optional. You can just use a period and it does the same thing.
IF condition
Stuff.
Many headaches if not caught when reading.6 -
Best xp : dev on new tech
Worst xp : being pressured to deliver something out of that new tech over a very short period1 -
Regardless of your education, your career will almost certainly start with a low-paying job that's not really what you want to do. You'll do that for a year or two, and move to a job that's a little closer to what you want. Until after 10-15 years, you'll be doing work that actually interests you.
Almost every career starts with a period of what American blues musicians call, "paying your dues."13 -
I have a bit strange personal rule - If I encounter something more than three times during 3hrs period, I certainly must learn as much as possible about it. Last night I've stumbled upon few listings in Go language.
So, starting this morning, decided to learn Go. So far, so good.
P.S. Is it just me or Go really does have strong C/C++ vibe (but is, indeed, higher level language)? Old guy like me, must like that.12 -
Just rememberes a collegue i had for a short period, i was remote and he was on location randomly added, I was told he was a php developer.
What he did was delete ALL the whitespace in the php code and called it optimising, he told the director it’ll make the code run faster. You can imagine how fun that was...2 -
So, I was on-call last night and I got paged four times in the six hour period that I slept. I had to get up and handle the alerts and make sure all the systems are up and running each time. I have a meeting in 20 minutes and I just want to sleep.2

Another day, another client story.
So today the client is sending me the text for the website, and after 15(!!!) iterations, add a period, center the text, justify the text, center it again etc.
Me: Can you please create a word document, design it as you like, and I will copy that to HTML for you?
Him: But if I do all the work what am I paying you for?
Me: To listen to you ...3 -
Who the hell thought that spaces OR tabs for indentation was an option?
For Spaghetti Monster's sake. An space is to separate words, one at a time. Tabs are for indents.

In the meeting where I gave my notice period, the manager told me I won't find another company that doesn't make you do "donkey work" like us.
Currently hee-hawing from work.3 -
After 4 years of professional programming the most important thing that I learned is "user is stupid".
Once I modified old code that was summing salaries (I added extra column to the result), nothing else. My result was rejected because all salaries was empty. Period of data was from first day of the month from user selected date to user selected date. It turned out that user was selecting 27th day of the month (it was 27th then). I responded that salaries have full month period, and you'll have to choose end of the month... And then shitstorm began, that I messed up previous functionality. I tried to explain, but it wasn't working. It ends up with user selecting any date and I'm doing end-of-the-month in the background^^
It's my first rant, welcome to you all :)4 -
I'm on my first free lance project, and devRant asks me for my horror story. -_-
Well, I undersold myself and gave such a stupid time estimation. Fortunately, the client was smarter, and he wants just half the work in same time period and will still gave me the same amount xD1 -
How many times do I have explain the rookiees in java developer team, that implementing an interface is not inheritance. You are not actually inheriting any member - variable or method or otherwise. You are just getting a skeleton, according to which you have write your class. THAT IS NOT INHERITANCE.
So MULTIPLE INHERITANCE does not exist in java. Period.
There is no way around it. Stop misunderstanding stuff and passing that misconceptions to newbies.1 -
I have started my first job as a web developer since February 1st. During the one month training period which is in progress, one of the training sessions was on Git and believe me Git is the most fascinating thing came to know me since I have joined computer science field. In love with it.2
-
I’ve only just been able to catch up with the UK news and the government missed ~16,000 cases of COVID-19 over a 7 day period due to a “technical glitch”.
The “technical glitch” was the government using an excel spreadsheet that reached the data limit.
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea long term, that’s why databases exist!!!!9 -
When I was in school, I had a period called "computers" every week. We were told by our computer teacher to remove our shoes outside the computer lab to prevent viruses from entering the computers.10
-
Moving to a new job 5 months after starting the previous one. The company did not manage to pass my probation period.5

my gf visited over the weekend. when she went out to get groceries I kept myself busy looking for a error on a project.
she came back and was like: did you fail to end a sentence with a period.
that solved the problem1 -
So i had the second talk with this company today. The backend developer somehow expected me to know all four benefits of jQuery. What the hell dude?
Nobody knows everything.
I’m not a big fan of jQuery period.9 -
I'm pretty sure my clients would fail the marshmallow test 9/10 times if not 10/10 times. We have a certain time period of the day set aside for me to look into new reported bugs but besides that I'm supposed to work on regular tasks. Of course, they ask me five hours after that time period is done, whether I can look into a new (non-urgent) bug. At the cost of the new thing they want to launch in 2 weeks. 🤔 I would love it if we actually had time to fix every single bug in the codebase but what typically happens is I get about 15 bug reports (most duplicates) and I'm expected to fix all of them in a span of 2 hours.1
-
The company I work for just screwed me out of a bonus while negotiating my salary after I handed in my notice. I really don't understand the logic of large companies that make these decisions that save them a few hundred bucks only to tarnish their reputation and assure that people like me will never EVER come back to work for them.
Can't wait for my notice period to be up!5 -
Forgot to change code in my api for rate limiting, after development. No unit tests.. because who really needs that right? 🤦♂️🙅♂️🤷♂️lolololol
Long story short, API went to production eventually, and stopped working almost immediately. Rate limiting was set for 2000 requests in a 1 hour time period. Not my finest moment.. fml 🤦♂️ -
I don't know which is worse:
1. My project manager telling me that I will have to make a whole project on my own within a month (frontend, backend, etc etc) for our major client and if I make it, we will get a bigger project for a longer period or
2. The colleague next to me being loud (speaking to himself, chewing things) at random intervals.2 -
My former partner and I raised AUD$8M in funds for a product that I developed in 2005, but due to the investor's incompetence, over a period of approx. 2 years, I forced her to resign.

What kind of a fucked up company that has a 9 interview process in a 3 month period and sends the rejection email without a single line of feedback?
They are a fucking startup, not Google! Not even close to a company like Google!!
It's my mistake that I put up with their shit from the beginning but I didn't know any better.4 -
I’m quite new to devRant, but it’s really growing on me.
I found a respectful, helpful and joyful community and I’m just glad to have found it in this difficult period of coronavirus.
I wish you all to go through and stay healthy!10 -
Stopping a heavily used script in production, because management wanted a print statement to include a period at the end.
-
My favorite is when they just don’t come in one day (don’t give notice, just see ya!). If that happens more than once in a few month period, that tells you more about the department than the individuals.
-
Got back to programming. After a failed period as tech lead at another company. It feels good to be a dev again.5
-
I love web development and web design. You can make something custom that looks great in a short period of time. Use the many frameworks to your advantage.
Also, for the people hating css, i get it. It's har sometimes but it's not that bad. Flexbox makes your life waaay easier.5 -
Being kept up for the entire night.
You ask yourself what is keeping you awake, after all you need to meet with a client about presenting what they ordered from you.
Did you debug it? Yes.
Did you back it up incase something happens? Yes.
Did you get it done in the correct time period? Yes.
Did you export it in the format they had requested? Shit. -
During a period when devs had been told "The board has been promised that we are improving quality, so you must not do anything but write unit tests", I wrote a unit test that compares the number of system colors in .NET to a constant. It's still running today (a couple of years later).

That moment when you are a junior frontend developer, you realize you are in probational period + you got a new huge project with a technology you never worked properly before and the only person, who can give you some addvices is going to leave the company in a few weeks... + you will be the only frontend dev. on this project... People I'm scared... 🤯🥺3

During our last Sprint Planning we have chosen to use internal codename Solid Snake for this period (yes, we change it every sprint).
Our Tech Lead likes to draw current name (adjective and animal name) on a whiteboard. As soon as new name has been voted down he refused to draw a new one because
Drum rolls
He doesn't like Metal Gear series.
I'm not sure I want to work in this company anymore...5 -
Ever seen a computer with a warranty period as long as the whole 30.... days?
Now you can get one! https://store.pine64.org/product/...23 -
Maybe time to implement a dupe-check making it impossible to post the same joke/meme more than x times in a 3 month period? Sorry guys but some jokes are just getting very repetitive..1

Just want to give a kudos to the dev’s who built this app - devRant. This app never fails to lighten me up after a stressful day at work. The best thing about this app which I like the most is the load time for the app. It has an amazing load time when you start the app. Period. Will soon become a supporter. Good job guys! P.S. check the tags on this post :)

Came to my parents house for the vacation period and forgot to push the code i was working on my computer. Now i sit with my laptop crying.4

When you begin to terminate sentences with semicolons; And it feels more natural than using a period. You know you've spent too much time coding;1 -

1) keeping my shit together until my 3 month notice period is done.
2) moving cross country.
3) starting a new job with a new tech stack which I'm not as experienced in. -
When I got changed between 3 projects in one month. Everytime I thought I got it figured out... NOPE. New project, new stuff to learn, comprehend and implement.
Very shitty period.1 -
Ever since installing Windows 7 a month ago it always showed the wrong time on the clock, no matter what I did.
Yesterday the trial period ran out and suddenly the clock works perfectly. -
Went for interview .
Got positive outcome .
Asked basic details and documents for call letter .
Later put notice period .
All of a sudden they dont need me.
What the actual frig?13 -
its seems like ill lose my gf if i start my cs study cuz ill not earn money in this period.. wtf!?

Got let go / fired today. I was still on my probation period, but they are going to pay me out for the next 2 weeks.
My boss wasn't even in the call "because he's in a sales meeting".
You know you are being let go when you don't have access to any company passwords, and they don't assign you any new work.
Well, onto something new. But first going to relax and catch up on my sleep.2 -
When you can't figure out why your page is broken for an hour and then realize it's because of one single missing period 😑6

Few weeks back, late night, busy watching online series and suddenly, junior pings me and asks for doubts related to implementation design and then implementation in nodejs (which I touched long long ago). And, me being attracted towards debugging, and kind heart to help the junior(hihi kind heart), helped to completely resolve the issue by texting and screenshot of logs sent over message.. just to mention. Time was around 2-3 am.. my most effective time period..
-
Just spent 4 hours working on a somewhat complex restructuring of my current project that, when boiled down totals about 50 new or modified lines.
While I realize that line count != productivity, all the testing and reworking over that period has me feeling like there should be more to show for it.
But then, there's the fact that it's working properly as it's supposed to now, so I guess it's a win in the end.1 -
I left my previous job without notice period (didnt need to coz i hadnt signed any contracts with them yet and have not been there for more that 3 months) so they got pissed and decided to not pay me my monthly salary.
Today (4 months later) they have the nerve to contact me to check if I want to go back to them. :)3 -
I don't get why the most devs are so into defending they're favorite programming language. I mean choose the language that gets the job done and not what's your favorite if language b sucks at doing a then I chose another one. So simple but most people don't get it. It's like the pc VS console discussion. Just play both period1

New years resolution: no more tech support period. No one appreciates it and if anything breaks in the future youre expected to fix it. Lol, no thanks2

Being a social media influencer i.e. having a couple thousand followers doesn’t make you entrepreneur. Period.2

so i am on notice period and suddenly my manager has realised that there are a lot of tasks that i have to pickup. well fuck this guy.
i was initially dumb enough to think that i leaving is a bad thing, and i should be doing everything to make the transition easier. the task was also interesting enough , as we were trying to add a new and complex feature and i was the main dev there.
so i started at full pace. i would work on my tasks for hours , even missing on my personal projects. but since last week he would keep adding new tickets in my jira boards every few days , followed by a quick huddle telling how this is a very small and high priority ticlet and i should look at that first.
and me being me, i would not only just finish those small tickets in time, but have a progress on my major feature, as well as answer doubts of other team mates and attend meetings.
--------
i always forget how hypnotising this work culture usually get. the above scenario that i explained? i have no problem with that in a general day. i love to work, solve problems and help others. but these are no normal days, this is my fuckin notice period.
And i am here coz of a reason. if they rely on me so much, why did they forced me to relocate when i just can't? why don't they gove me a lucrative salary + worthy relocation benefits ? fuck them. i even have to serve for a fucking 60 days coz they are not willing to reduce my notice period .
fake promises everytime.
"you don't worry about different office mentioned in your offer letter. we will always keep the environment remote" ~ lie

notice period experts, i need some devil advice to not get exploited by a lier corp. how to utilise my notice period and what should he the excuses to not attend any nloody meetings?9 -
Its so disheartening to see how easily replacable you are if you work for someone else, no matter how hard you worked. The moment you say " I am resigning", the behaviour of your manager changes so dramatically. Its like you don't exist anymore. No more new interesting work, no nothing. Why!!!!7
-
So I thought I was still on AWS' trial period. Turns out I'm not anymore and I just paid $50 for last month and still have $40 to pay at the end of this month. FUCK. I used it for my internship but I can't ask them to pay me that money back because it was my fault not knowing that I wasn't on the trial period anymore. Also, that's more than half my monthly income, what a shit currency my country has. I could've bought a new 60% keyboard I was after with that money ;-;8

GUYS; STOP THE VIMIPOSTS got like all of them in the small period I‘m checkin jesus christ lord save us20

I hate the process of trying to get hydrated when I’ve gone through a period of apparently thinking I’m a cactus.
When I don’t drink water at all, I feel fine. No dry mouth, no symptoms of dehydration.
I *start* trying to hydrate and it’s like my body thinks this is the best time to start giving me all those dehydration symptoms it doesn’t even bother with when I’m not drinking water because it’s just given up on me listening to them.
I drank 64 oz of water yesterday and woke up with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth and my throat scratchy.
I know that I need to keep drinking water in large quantities for a period of time for my body to chill the fuck out again, but words can’t describe how tempting it is to just go back to being a cactus.
Hydrating sucks.8 -
First time to lay off someone. Man that feels not good, even if the person was still in probation period...

It has now become trend for all new startups in my country to follow these three steps.
Step 1 - Attract developers by showing them high CTC.
Step 2 - Make them work mercilessly on intern basis giving them low pay.
Step 3 - Fire them after intern period without giving some valid reasons.
I am fed up now as I have wasted my six months without getting much pay and now I am jobless 😨5 -
Wow!!!! After a very short period of time (since March), the startup I am at is finally finalizing an acquisition. I got my offer letter today from the new, much bigger company.
Oh boy, this starts a new chapter in my career ... one where I will be surrounded by countless people who are all smarter than me.2 -
Did some math about corona development in germany...
even if we immediately lockdown, the health system will be far overstressed.
we're literally fucked.
but dont believe me, dont believe the rki, go run the numbers yourself and keep in mind, that theres a 2 week incubation period6 -
NEVER maintain multiple release branches as a maintainer, period.
Given enough PRs, nobody, not even god-tier maintainers, is able to keep track of all commits and the whole context/story behind it.
Remember that people ALWAYS PR against your master and nobody even cares about your whatever-named-next-branch buried deep inside your feature branches.
Please make it easy for others if you want actual contributions.1 -
Is it so hard for other people to write code as if there will be other eyes watching? When will people learn that a programming language is what bridges the communication gap between humans and machines? If I can't follow your code, you wrote it poorly. Period. At least document what the hell is going on. Be considerate of the next person. Unbelievable.
-
Why everyone in management wants to know how i solve the bug if you do not even know what is Bootstrap. All that matter is fucking bug is resolved PERIOD

So... in the last few months i shared the office with a real estate company. I didnt pay rent and in exchange i would help them with different stuff.... on monday i will be moving into my own office again... damn it was a hard period of time and i want to thank devRant for helping me keep my sanity. THANK YOU!2

Just got an offer from a startup in India. Guess what? They are *not* going to be offering any equity. And... there's going to be a 6 month probation period!!! :O x-(3

Hmm, just noticed lifelog recognises devrant as communication. Found that intresting for some reason. Also dr is the only "communication" app i use for extended period along with sync for reddit.
Also, its 7.50 in morning, not evening. I am not that lazy. -
omg this is not what the meetings are about!!!!! keep dumbass questions to yourself until the q/a period...

My area of focus is to focus.
I get distracted way too easily, I often think I would get far more done if I could stay focused for a longer period.2 -
I'm an android developer. It's Friday evening. Just received a call from my honcho. He asked me to "hack" one website and get all the data from it.
Now I'm downloading PyCharm...
It's not a regular "fucking hell". It's a shit. Period.2 -
wk8 responses so far have been WEAK.
Most of them follow the format:
I did <some minor mistake> but fortunately I was able to <make a quick fix> within <short period of time> so everything turned out ok.
Come on guys, where are the REAL fuck ups? The ones that got you fired/permanently banned from the company?4 -
I've always thought that in order to become a project manager it was necessary a period as programmer (as it was a sort of promotion).
But according to what I read here it seems like a lot of pm have no idea how to/how long it takes to develop software... Am I wrong or what?3 -
I had a challenge this week. I had to develop a business site in less then 5 days. I’m pretty happy with the result especially since i estimated multiple weeks for a site like this.
Ofcourse the manager had to come over and complain and bitch about alignments of elements. I’m sorry dude but with this kind of abnormal time pressure you don’t have the right to complain. Period.4 -
My creation after 1 day.
Enter any string ending with period and this program will remove any spaces that exceed.
Looks pretty beautiful and decorative too. :)6 -

we talk sometimes...
my colleagues tend to laugh when I've been talking for a longer period of time, but it truly does help! -
What's the best passive income for you? With small effort/capital but with big returns in a short period of time? Also high chance of working/succeeding.
I don't want to be an employee forever :) thanks!11 -
There is a period in developer's life when writing comments in your code is a good idea. Then, after some time, when you write comments, it means your code is not that descriptive, is not so good that you consider writing comments.2

I'm torn on dev bootcamps.
On one hand, I learn the most in hands-on direct tinkering and bootcamps tend to exude this with well-trained instructors following best practices.
On the other hand, the short timeline means corners are cut and an overwhelming amount of material is dropped all at once leading to a leaky retention vessel at the end.
I prefer ramping up learning over a period of time to gain experience than a fire hose approach.1 -
Well I ended up getting two jobs through my college so now I've gotta pick between:
- A legacy maintenance job with a better environment and salary, for a minimum of two years.
OR
-An IT based job with a lower salary but no fixed initial working period.
Advice devRanters?
PS: I am in debt because I took a loan for college tuition. 😐
*Confused*6 -
MaterialUI? Is it shit?
A brand new code base. Old codebase (old employees) used MaterialUI, locking in a lot of the styling and layout in their grids.
I'm trying to identify the pros/cons that can come from experience using the framework.
Some questions to spark discussion:
Anyone used this in production for a period of time?
Did it hold up? Did the designers hate it?
How was mixing this with SASS etc.
Cheers8 -
The second you write `else { return false; }` you should lose the privilege of calling yourselves a dev, from then on. Period.
Example,
if(condition) {
// ...some code
return true;
} else {
return false;
}14 -
Production goes down because there's a memory leak due to scale.
When you say it in one sentence, it sounds too easy. Being developers we know how it all goes. It starts with an alert ping, then one server instance goes down, then the next. First you start debugging from your code, then the application servers, then the web servers and by that time, you're already on the tips of your toes. Then you realize that the application and application servers have been gradually losing memory over a period of time. If the application is one that don't get re-deployed ever so often, the complexity grows faster. No anomaly / change detection monitor can detect a gradual decrease of memory over a period of months.2 -
Clrscr() - Best. Function. Ever. Period.
When things get messy, all you need is this badboy(/girl) and everything is gone.
\n and \t are also my fav. -
That feeling when it's your notice period and you are given a shitty project and you still do it with complete dedication (well, because you are emotional and stuff) and on the second last day of your tint at the company, he project is scrapped! :'(3

Is it only me that when I finally meet a competent collaugue and we build consistently good products together for an extended period of time that I start seeing him/her as the whole world?
It's so rare finding a really competent collaugue that when I do, after many wonderful works together, I just can't stop compliment him/her until it gets weird.2 -
Making my sleep period do a backflip by having 25-26hr days. It shortens the quarantine and feels more healthy than trying to cram all the work, sleep and procrastinating into 24 hours.1

If being late can be marked as "half day leave"; should leaving early also be marked as "half day leave"?
On a side note, my company already has just 3.4 out of 5 ratings on the basis of 3 ratings, on glassdoor... Now they're messing up with 2 employees on notice period. Both of us are planning to give 1. :)4 -
Lately i feel like i lost my mind
I became insane
Insanity is eating me alive from within
For a longer period of time
As you can fucking tell from my previous posts
Youtube recommend me a video
A song
It is called Taw & Blvkstn - Minds Gone
The lyrics go as
"My minds gone
No lights on

I was thinking about what the correct term is for the "." symbol at the end of sentences. Is it dot, point or period?
Turns out it is period, but I also learned that in British English it’s called full stop, which I find very funny 😂. It sounds like something that one would scream in an emergency. FULL STOP!
Anyway, in German there is only one word for dot, point, period and full stop.90 -
do you know: victoria's secret higher ranking executive from scranton, pa was a lesbian who humped women prostitutes and since has been replaced by one of your pod people.
but the song from this time period about victoria's secret, is kind of funny, since one of the higher level executives was a woman and apparently enjoyed young women in lingerie as much as men do :P4 -
When your comp sci teacher didn't get mad that everyone skipped class.

Yes, after an initial period of scepticism they did.
I was incredibly well supported, both morally and financially, and I'm incredibly grateful for it. It's a very fortunate position that many don't have the luxury of experiencing, and I've no doubt it helped immensely - especially in earlier years. -
I spent most of the first half of the year writing an app that talks to an API that a vendor custom-made for us, to automate the opening of vendor hardware replacement tickets. It went live yesterday on the vendor's side, and I began 13 days of PTO today. Rather than go full-on with it, I handed it to three engineers to test it while I'm gone and document their experience. Preliminary results have been very good. I figured that would be the smartest way to handle my absence and still get some valuable work done with it.
But I'm going out of my mind! I want feedback now! I want to work more on it! All I can do is keep a list of fixes and improvements and stare blankly at it until after my vacation is over. My mind is still wedged firmly in the backend. Must relax!1 -
If you could remember that I'm not your staff anymore and stop assigning me to projects. That'd be fucking swell.
I'm meant to be infrastructure now so fuck off. Oh a devs leaving let's hand the project to the infrastructure guy who's fucking leaving also!!
Fucking genius. I'm so close to just to saying fucking swivel and walking out. Fuck the notice period. -
My favourite tool currently is Gulp, although that sentiment is slowly eroding as I integrate it into a project that is 10+ years old and follows few standards with regard to css and javascript files. At least it is a quiet period in my workplace at the moment and it will improve development workflow when I'm done3

There should be a garbage collector for IRC channels. If there's no activity for a given period of time, then just cancel it from above...2

Not using my period of unemployment to really delve into freelancing. It's much harder to do on the side. But I lacked knowledge and experience back then.
Also not interviewing companies better. Always ask about everything. -
One letter story:
This is going to be weird--do it and we'll see how far we can go without going completely insane.
Whitespaces is one single comment, so is symbols such as the period sign. Be creative--use ampersands and quick way of writing longer things.
The rest of the rules go the same as for my previous rant. I'll write the first comment, then we COMMENT THE FUCKING SHIT OUT OF THIS GOD DAMN FUCKING RANT!17 -
When react says "Module Not Found" then you realise that you have to add a period infront of the forward slash 😒

Worked entire day on an ML to predict train ticket status for Indian Railways.

There's more to it, but the results are better now.4 -
I’ve been on devRant for a very short period of time and I’ve seen too many posts about PHP fucking people in the ass.
Is it really that bad?(I’m an embedded systems geek so don’t ask me why I don’t know anything about PHP)18 -
Ik was helping a friend and needed quick a dev environment. Great, github codespaces to the resque! Fast dev environment with vscode editor online running a debian container. Perfect. But then it happened: "You're at 100% of your included usage for this billing period. For more information, view your billing settings.".
I can't access my source files anymore. Fuck, it was so much research5 -
Took three days off during an insanely busy period because had to take care of some shit back in the country I'm from. Didn't know what state I'd be in after this so despite having the flight now (in the evening), took the next day off as well in case I would be completely exhausted. Now, at the airport, who do I see? The CEO... Commence hide-and-seek :)
-
I'm alone most of the day: my housemate is at work this morning, family scattered around the country, recently moved to a new town.
I had a great night last night and today is fantastic too. I'm not writing a single line of code today or doing anything but running a few laps later... maybe.
I don't even feel sad in the slightest.
Happy nondenominational festive period guys! -
Well, here goes the first day of my four week notice period. Finally took the decision to look for a new job last week. I'm curious where I'm gonna end up, but I'll be relieved when these four weeks are over. I lost interest in the job I'm currently at and it sucks that I'm still stuck here for so long, but at least there's an end in sight now.1

Forbes study https://lnkd.in/f4GDPnf shows that there has been a drastic reduction in pollution levels in China during the lockdown period due to Coronavirus outbreak.

My friend Just completed his notice period in my company, but now he's saying that I forgot to copy some code for reference like their architecture and authentication code, so, he's asking me to share the repo code of my company. The company has deleted all his data while he was leaving. So what should I do? should I share the code without including .env files or what should I do?10

funny how linkedin lunatics compare "not taking job due to multiple offers" to "not giving a job after giving a job offer"
this may seem similar, but on one side there's a company, with running operations and having multiple employees to take up on the work load of the leaving employee. even if some guy backed out on an offer, they still have employees and can continue their search.
but on other side their is an employee serving 60-90 days notice period. he/she have put a notice period due to a job guarantee and is out of livelihood if offer is rescinded3 -
I'm working real hard for my studies and I'm loving it because I'm getting the results. However, friends keep on telling me how I'll regret that later and that this is my only youth etc...
I don't know if what I'm doing is right, the idea to waste a period is scary, but also I really want to succeed to be good in CS later on ...3 -
I want to work on my project (well it's just a copy of another website) so bad, but it's the exam period. Mendokusē4

The period of half a year when I mostly lost interest in programming.

Rant two of monday!!
We are in a new office. Bigger than the previous one. Fine.
We are away from sales team (check previous rants about sales team and their hero #boringman)
Cool. We still hear him and them but it's better.
Boring man stops by tech team table to ask how many lines of code we have done today or in the last <period of time>.
We have solved nothing.
Boring man is veeeeery bored. -
Just to deploy to test we have to create a listing for our jars so they are deployed with an ear. Time to create this record? Three fucking days.
Just let us use Docker already you Jurassic period techno-dinosaur fucks! -
Do you listen to music when you have to be productive during a fixed period of time? What kind of music then? Or do you prefer a quiet environment? I am curious about what are your pro-life-tips devs.7

Spent most of the day at work debugging a script which imports client data from their old system into our system. Someone made a change to a for loop which was looping through a period length by days, doing whatever it needed to do for each day. Unfortunately they changed the increment value from 1 day to 86400 days... probably thinking they were dealing with seconds not days. A day well spent.1

election period always makes me cynical (more cynical than I already am that is).
Apocalyptic fantasies are indulgent because they suggest a catastrophe that might end the world. The dull reality is that the world doesn't end, and you just have to go about your life with a new standard.4 -
I'll soon start as a web dev intern, I'm looking forward to it, though I'm also a bit anxious/insecure about it.
Do you guys have any tips for my intern period etc?7 -
Today suddenly our HR had mailed to all the employees that after 6 days all employees' post resignation notice period will be changed
- from 1 month (old) to 3 months (new) for under probation employees &
- from 2 months (old) to 3 months (new) for permanent employees.
Even logically this seems to be too stretched up for IT service company based in the India.
My question is how much legal is this?
I googled but answers were for Indian labor laws which are not applicable to the IT company according to my knowledge.5 -
I.miss watching the golden girls with my mother and wings and innocent things.

I bought a Lenovo laptop in 2022 and after six months laptop's hinge was broken. It was in a warranty period so they replaced the broken parts in a month. Then the keyboard was not working so they replaced it too. After 1 year, windows got corrupted. And now, in 2 years, the hinge is broken twice. I have only one question.
Why the hell do you guys make such weak laptops?5 -
Is it a good approach to use MariaDB in one Server and MongoDB in another one to store various client's data?
The reason I need MongoDB is because the client has to create custom Maintenance Checklist (which mean he has to create rows and columns), and then submit these data based on specific period. And I am finding hard time how to design this on MariaDB, even with dynamic columns since it might bring performance issue.8 -
Browsing le web for an extensiv period of time looking for useful input on build/release pipelines related to deployment of js code.
Judging by the answers on SO, blogs, tutorials etc I’ve come to the conclusion that no js code make it past development. Which is weird. -
Only dev in the company, couple of on going wordpress projects, just left without notice period. Im going to hell arnt I.
Explanation: I had not yet signed any contracts because the boss “trusted me” i just completed 3 months (standard probation period in other companies) but just got a job offer with triple the salary but recruiters seemed in a rush and i figured i might lose my shot if i told them to wait. Keep in mind in my country that kind of salary is impossible to get for a 21 yr old dev.1 -
Having sex. Or long hot showers. It's amazing how doing either of those helps me unplug for the day and start to refresh my self for the next day of coding.
Context, I used to burnout quiet often. Learning to unplug allowed me to be a better software engineer that could work better over an extended period of time.3 -
I'm currently working as an intern in a Web company and its the first time that I have to work 8 hours a day (I'm in college so that's completely new to me).
How do you guys stay focused for 8 hours? It's kinda hard to go from 90 minutes classes to 8 hours of (somewhat) consistent work.
How do I focus for a long period of time?7 -

Best: Initiated the formal process to get a work visa, which is really the first step into settling down here after my studying period.
Worst: Have to work with with WordPress sometimes, and 80% of the other system's tech stack being new, making me feel like an absolute retard because I'm slower than a drunk snail.
Overall a nice year, despite 2020 shitting all over everyone. -
I entered my current company on January 28 and I have made a great effort. I was offered a lead role on may or july but depending on a review period. I know this period came to an end so I ask for a salary raise but they told me the following: "you are closed to the salary band limit so there is no possibility of a salary raise; the only possibility is switching to another role". So I disagreed because I considered I should be rewarded for all the effort I did these months... They came up with the idea of a bonus (they didnt told me the amount) but I still think I should hace set things clear... Like saying: There will be a review or analysis period ? Ok when it will end ?. Whats going to be decided after that ?. If a new role is considered, what will be my responsabilities ?. Because I made a huge effort considering I will be a father... And think this takes me to a place where I must still keep waiting when I know I give proof of my vslue5

I'm surprised by how complex simple things could become. Alt+<key> in vim didn't work, so I copied a script from stackoverflow that makes vim poll the esc key every 50ms, if it is pressed together with another key in this period it is interpreted as Alt. My terminal sends esc+<key> instead of Alt+<key> so it works perfectly.

Do you know of any free tools to limit the network of a specific application on windows?
NetLimiter works but I have to buy it after the test period. Could not find anything else.5 -
How can it be hat magento, one of "the" eCommerce softwares with a pretty based "cloud" plan and all that, is just offline for "planned maintenance" for TWO DAYS?!
CI/CD?
Cloud?
Dont your customers pay you enough for this basic stuff?
And also the opensource segment ist offline for the whole "maintenance" period.

boy all i did around this time period is make money. and try to make more. and try to bypass blue collar temp jobs back into career moves.
wow this time period sucked.
sucks more now that you people have lied for years about the year2 -
I'm tempted to join a cybersecurity challenge and give it a shot. The only problem is that the dates for the admission tests are fully overlapping with my exam period at university, and I *need* to pass some exams this time.
Why does it always have to be so complicated? -
So after the CIO pretty much does a table flip to the division about causing near daily customer impact we now have seven business day cool period for Changes and 13 cross functional teams stood up with 1, 15, 30, 60, and 90 day deliverables to an executive audience.
Guess what my team did today?
Offline a major Production database during the middle of the day, thinking they were in Development. Didn’t notice for 40 minutes. -
If I wanted to do some 1990s hackers shit, but more for this time period is there a way i can autopilot the apps on a smartphone that offer those crappy free numbers and auto-dial with them and feed / receive audio information into/from them via a program ?3

Short : I'm in a situation where I fucking hate to go to office everyday because the business team thinks I'm their bitch
Long : Exactly one year ago I joined this small company, few months ago all the senior devs started working on revamping the old shitty ERP they have into new one. They put me in charge of taking care the support for a project we work before. Now fucking asshole from the BA team sit on my shoulder every day and forcing me to do anything he thinks he want.Right now I'm doing a data migration from massive excel files from client. It's in a shitty format I asked help from senior devs they said it's impossible to import this shit. But my asshole team lead also support that BA fucker.
I can't sleep everyday normally because of stress. My notice period (relieving period) is 3 months.I just feel like every end of day I wanna kill all those motherfuckers11 -
You guys had to ever deal with so called bench time 😵😵 so annoying after certain time period. Employers keeps complaining about bench ageing yet have no projects to offer. And best excuse for rejecting profiles within company for mismatch skills.5

I think all this gender shit is just garbage. The male/female group has it wrong and the wtf gender group has it wrong. There is one gender, period! We are all male.

Doing office even when it's vacation day today...
Not because I am a workaholic or there is work pressure from company...
But because I like doing my work as a developer and it's quite peaceful and fun to code for some hours rather than idling around at home figuring out how to kill time especially during this lockdown period...
P.S. Planning to find some time to learn from online tutorials too in the evening 😁2 -
It's always some dumb thing that goes wrong. Like, a semicolon I forgot to type, or a period or a misspelled variable. Last week I spent two hours on a Discord Bot coded in Python that refused to iterate a list of names. I had forgotten to put quotation marks around each of the items in the list so they would register as strings instead of integers. Will it ever get better?6

you know. a little pointer as to what it is I'm supposed to be doing to move on with life would be nice.

Haven't been on here in quite awhile. Hoping I can get inspired to work on a project or something. This depression has been real, especially during this quarantine period I'm currently in.

YouTube apparently has taken to blocking uploads with the words fake and pandemic in it
The pandemic describing it modeling more a time period where pedophile whores and child traffickers were extremely active and pushing their honest children into the street while the cocksuckers got apartments11 -
To what order of magnitude would be sufficient to step time based functions for physics applications ? Since direct solutions off multivariant co dependent problems usually cant be found until you update things like position velocity and or energy over a very short tike period first. Example being gravitation or electrostatics
Like nano seconds ?12 -
Learning system development. Period. Heck, I'm still looking for resources that don't cost hundreds of dollars, require me to open-source everything I want to make, require that I read a 4000-page Intel manual, and/or ask that I be in a graduate program or have a degree that I am still earning.3

Upon re-launching a website following an extensive, yet quiet testing period, our marketing/online team say to us "I guess we better start testing now"

Ever tried explaining software development to your grandma? It's like narrating a sci-fi movie to someone who only watches period dramas. "Can you fix my computer?" they ask, as if coding automatically qualifies me for IT support. And those midnight meetings? It's like they think engineers are nocturnal creatures powered by coffee and keyboard clicks.3

The holidays are the worst period: since I am the only dev, my boss get into the code, and I receive multiple messages - calls the explain "why this is so bad" and even "when you come back from vacation we need to talk about a lot of problems".
So, everything worked when I was there because of magic, it seems... -
Ah, strong motivation: get to 80% (or so) test coverage before my Goland trial expires today or tomorrow.
-
Bad habits I know but, if I go for a smoke, jump to the toilet and get a coffee in the way back to my desk and stick Spotify on a long playlist I don't tend to move for quite an extended period of time and actually get Shit done. I also find do not disturb to be an incredibly useful feature in Skype for business

Team I'm on consists of four devs, two being contractors who have hit their necessary month off period (something to do with contractual laws), one junior developer who is off on holiday for a while, and me, the person with most experience but busiest home life.
Next few weeks are going to be a real test of patience until I'm no longer alone on the team.1 -
so what will you do if a company is offering you a job and you have a 60 day notice period? (assuming that the said company hasn't asked this question before/during the interview process)
seeing the current market situation, it seems very risky since the new company is obviously going to keep searching for backup devs who might show up before your joining date.
meanwhile it will be very awkward for you to work during your notice period since 60 days is almost a financial quarter and you are the notice period guy, so you might end with non important tasks
what will you do?5 -
Spent all day yesterday and a pile of StackOverflow good will on debugging the fact that I was missing a hyphen and a period.
I really, really, really suck at this. -
Catching up from shows from this programmed time period, anyone see Domina ? Its a big jockish but at least it isn't a spartacus sands and whatever-the-hell dumb crap that was.

Did anyone participate in GSOC 2020?
Please share how your "waiting for the results period going on" XD ? -
Any one with a shorter way to code a deck of cards shuffling and never let the deck of cards be shuffled in a way it is similar to a certain period it was shuffled? Python. :-)1

I think the idea that someone thought supposedly that I was served human rather than venison intentionally begins to adequately sum up my problems with this time period and these people. Where their minds.leap to is pretty fucked up3
-
I really really need to invent a trustworthy place to store photos and back date as necessary to ensure you always know where And when the really real time period has settled and give you all the stuff stolen which is being held in archives5

So last time saw one of the Zimmerman he was telling me the salt lake crisis from this time period was being overplayed to try to get people to want to flee salt lake city
Wonder if they ever just diverted a damn river to it . -
Why are fucking people do dedicated to destroying everyone else's purpose ?
There has to be a record
Records and history matter
There has to be something sentimental
There has to be something nostalgic
Much in the same way as they can be classified this entire time period didn't have to be but had ended up being one big gaping empty hole
And they all ate themselves

I got a new opportunity in a startup with a good hike as compared to current organization, my notice period is 30 days and still my manager wants me to stay in the company for atleast 3 months, I am so in a dilemma. What should I do?4

Data scientists: I have logged how busy my gym was for a week (every minute). How would I generate a graph of a typical day? I haven’t done anything like this, so I don’t know how to approach the problem. Basically I want to see what time of the day there’s a quiet period on average.11

I was laid off last week due to economic issues in my company. Can you give me an idea of what the job market is like right now? I'm a full-stack developer with 6 years of experience in RoR, Elixir Phoenix, and JavaScript front-end frameworks like ReactJS and Vue. I have 15 days left of my 30-day notice period, and I haven't been able to secure an interview yet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
