Me: IT call center.
Lady: Hi! I cant access the shared folder!
Me: Ok. I'll try and help you out. Whats happening when you click on it?
Lady: ok ok... {clicks}... Now it's asking me to entered my password. Should I enter it?
Me: Do you know it?
Lady: Yeah.
Me: yeah try entering it.
Lady: YES. That worked! Thank you so so much!!!
Me: No problem. Have a good day!13 -
Don't know if it's up here, found it on r/ProgrammerHumor and thought it deserved to be shared :)28

Interviewer - so what's your email ID?
Candidate- sir, abc@xyz.com
Interviewer - and password?
Candidate- 12345678
Interviewer - you shared such a confidential information so easily for the job. How can we trust that you will not share any confidential information of the company for some better offers?
Candidate - Sir, I might have shared my password with you but I don't think you can still login to my email account. Let's look for the possibilities. My password can be
12345678
Or
Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneight
Or
1twothreefourfivesixseveneight
1twothreefourfivesixseven8….. so on
Or

13355557777778 (1, two 3, four 5……, 8)….. so on
Or
Combination of all of these…
By the way, did I mention use of capitals? 😂
Finally that candidate was offered with the position as

"could I get admin privileges to reboot this server?"
Sounds valid enough, right?
OH YEAH SURE, YOU'RE A TINY USER ON A HUGE ASS SHARED SERVER, OF COURSE I'LL GIVE YOU ROOT ACCESS TO REBOOT THE WHOLE FUCKING SERVER.
Worst part, he didn't understand why that would be weird.
Can I buy a little common sense somewhere for this guy?27 -
This made my day (and is the 3rd freaking time I try to get this shared here. Definitely need more coffee)2

I was asked to present a code I wrote previously. This was not planned. I shared my screen and presented. Things went well.
One employee asked me to search a particular term which was possibly related to an advance topic in the domain we were working on.
I opened Chrome and the first page had a Quora post: "Why my dull co-workers try to act smart and are not yet fired?".

You think a junior dev pushing his code onto a production server is bad? Wait till you have that admin who is illegally mining Bitcoin on your production server. 😂
I went for a Cyber Security conference today with one of managers and this was one of the life experiences some of the speakers shared.18 -
Yesterday Gitlab had severe issues.
Somehow their database replication had split and ALL of the traffic went over one server.
I absolutely love how transparent they were about this issue and that they shared what exactly they were doing.9 -
Confession.
I am sorry.
I don't know if I am doing the right or the wrong thing.
I never shared devRant with people I know because of three things.
1. I don't want to infect this community with cancerous people.
2. I only have a few friends.
3. People I know have no interest in programming (still in college).16 -
My coworker shared account keys of Amazon aws on a public repo at Github. Took me around 3 days to find out and about 20 ec2 instances were created and running by a hacker...6

For fucks sake, corporate IT has locked a database application for new entries because it will be phased out by the end of the year. However, the new application is not yet working.
The interim solution? An excel sheet on a shared network drive. In fucking 2020! Unbe-fucking-lievable!12 -
Shared by codechef on their Facebook page. Not sure who the original author.
But it sure does make a pretty good header for your code. ;)

Dev: This could be sooooo easily optimized...
Me: Uhm. Don't think so. What's your idea?
Dev: Just use threads.
Me: Nope. Problem requires 3 shared resources per process step, it won't be faster by threading. Shared resource will only lead to locking contention, decreasing performance.
Dev: I don't think that will happen. Can you PROOF to ME that this will happen?
Me: It was your suggestion, so you should proof me wrong. Nice try, but no thanks.
Dev: Yeah, but it's too slow and it should run faster.
Me: If you cannot find a better approach than the current one, it runs as fast as it can while providing correct results. That's not slow. That's just working as intended and designed.
Dev: Yeah, but it's still slow.

You know these conversations where you just wanna rip some people's face off, stick it in the shit hole they use to talk and toss them out of the window....
Yeah. Had those conversations today.10 -
You know shared folder in Windows? My boss tell us web developers to work on an app inside that single shared folder (from one "powerful" pc, lol) to prevent conflict and keep the app up-to-date instead of git.2

At office we sometimes lose our internet connection, the strange part is that it's not fully gone, if you (for example) ping an ip directly, it's fine. But if you try to load any web pages, or do any other kind of internet usage, it won't.
We finally know why...
It's because another company in the same building is uploading some huge thing and using all of the available upload bandwidth (200 mb/s)
So that's nice... Let's put a limiter on that so they DON'T FUCKING KICK US OFFLINE WHEN THEY NEED TO UPLOAD SOME.... WHAT EVER THEY MAKE...3 -
Shared devRant to some of my Chinese speaking dev partners.
Partner: It is interesting to know that dev rants are language independent.
Me: Developers talk in programming languages, which are the same throughout the world. -

Hello @Everyone! , this is my first rant.

"As a team, we have the shared responsibility to ___".
(replace with ALL of the following: resolve bugs, do junior's code reviews, clean up dead code, keep the kitchen clean, improve test coverage, write documentation, order coffee beans, etc)
NO. JUST FUCKING STOP RIGHT THERE. Shared responsibilities do not exist. A single person is responsible, and can optionally delegate tasks.
EITHER I DO IT AND I'LL BE FUCKING AWESOME AT IT, OR SOMEONE ELSE DOES — BUT I'LL SLAP SLACKERS IN THE GENITALS WITH MY KEYBOARD.
Fucking startup hipsters with their community driven attitude, this way no shit gets done, ever.7 -
Me and some of my friends used to crack programming jokes and ranting about jobs/software engineering etc. Other people used to get irritated by that, even s/w enggs. When I found devRant, I felt like those girls from Avicii's song "Wake me up".
I shared devRant with my friends and said "Guys, we found our people. Hurry!!" 😍😍😎😎😂😂2 -

I shared public IP of a server to a fellow software engineer. He has ssh login access to that server.
He needs private IP of the same server to run some script.
He is asking me for private IP. Did he really graduate in computer science ?
BTW, his development machine is a Linux machine.

Customer has thousands of clients - puts each client site under a subdomain of the main domain on a shared server. What happens to every single website when the server runs out of space?
But that'll never happen, right? We have lots of space. It certainly won't happen on day one of the main tech dev's holiday.
...twice...
It's fine, there's a backup, or atleast a redirect, right
.....right?4 -

Instead of this

Also I should mention that this happened 4 years ago and my mentor (27 years old economy major at the time) did not know how to use git, we stored projects on a shared networking folder.15 -
Never before I have shared my feelings with all great, kind developers. I always wanted to be the healthy, active & passionate member of this family...but never know what to say!!
Made an account earlier as well .. but thought I am not ready I always had some lame excuses so never shared anything before.
I am doing a fresh start now , able to convince myself to share something..

IT is so violent and disturbing when it comes to technical terms in relation to clusters:
- master / slave
- master / master / witness (crime scene?)
- splitbrain (how does that look in reality?)
- stonith (shoot the other node in the head)
- deadtime (no heartbeat)
- slicing (wtf?)
- shard (do they kill with that?)
- active / passive (sex scene?)
- single point of failure (at least they know who is to blame)
- share nothing / shared all (dictators vs communism)

Introduced git in work about 5 months ago, explained to my coworkers how it works, shared links to tutorials, git pro book and everything imaginable.

I shared it with my team but no one even acknowledged it. 😞2 -
at the begin of the year I started working as contractor for a company which development environment was a shit machine in the basement...shared by all developers via ssh, that's right, no local development.

Boss: Can you export the foo data and send it to me?
Me: Sure
Me (later): Ok, just shared foo.csv with you. It should have everything you need, just let me know if you need the bar data.
Boss: OK, thanks.
Today
Boss: Did you get the foo data exported?
Me: Yes, I shared that with you yesterday
Boss: What did you name it?
This is all in a chat, by the way, not in person. Scrolling for 1.5 seconds reveals all the relevant information.
How do I respond in a way that is not sarcastic and does not belittle my boss? I'm not sure it's even possible.2 -

Yesterday, i created a simple food ordering app for our office. I shared it to my dev colleagues and got a decent feedback (except for the new hire). But when shared it to people like writers and graphic designers. I feel a bit off.
Graphic D: "The app should not use a blue color scheme. because blue is an UNAPPETIZING COLOR", "The yellow color is too vibrant"
Writers: They are blabbing about the grammar and spellings :(
New Hired Dev: Can you share me the codes?
** I always trying to learn how to do webdesign but i think its not really for me :(8 -
Fun though practical question.
You've accidentaly pasted and sent some internally used password, let it be your account pw or some server's root pw, into a company's chat channel with 100+ other employees. What do you do next? :)
P.S. deleting the message is not possible
P.P.S. this happens. Thanks to windows "Let me just quickly change window focus from putty to chat window" _FEATURE_ I've accidentally shared like a dozen of root passwords with others.11 -
Our new COO has decided to migrate our passwords from to a new password manager (due to security concerns).
But now, nearly 75% of our passwords are just 'missing' and we don't have access anymore to our first password manager and it's been emptied out.
AFAIK, the COO still has all the passwords but not shared. He is not responding to my mails / team message from the past day.10 -

My colleague saw this code of mine and said it is annoying conditions are not on the same line, since it is a shared project I can't go "that's my style!"
What do you think should I convince him why we need to follow this approach (at least it can be easily read rather than reading a screen wide line)26 -
Had coffee in the late evening.

Most successful project? Probably a little tool I built to practice programming and to help with my studies in a completely different field. I didn't want to keep it all for myself and shared it with some friends at the university. I would never have expected that a couple of weeks later almost every student at our department will be using it but I'm quite happy I could help them too.

Why do _devs_ still use shared hosting (and then bitch about it)?
"This thing won't let me use external SMTP" - "I can't use more than 2 domains for my site" - "I can't change X in PHP config" ...
You're a dev, VPS prices are pretty much on the same level as shared hosting, and setting those things up isn't exactly rocket science either.31 -
First thing, I love my colleague. I know him for 15 years and I'm under 30. But I freaking hate when he picks his nose FOR ALL THE DAY LONG and uses shared mouses and keyboards, leaving them unable to use. I have to clean all that mess and no matter what we say he still do it. :(5

It pains most when a colleague left the company for good since OJT. Worst is leaving the company without a pay, no refund for not remitted governmentt benefits. I thought this only applies to fucking government or politicians, but also to the company you worked and shared most of your goddamn life not wondering why most good employees left the company.

Omg how stupid some people are... Today at my university I used the first time one of the computers in the computer room and there is a portable Firefox installed in a shared space on the computer and that is also where it saved settings etc. So this is the same for every user on that particular computer.
And when I checked the security settings I found that about 10 different accounts were saved and accessible with website username and password.
So of course the shared space Firefox is bad, but you still shouldn't save you password on a public computer :S
PS: If anyone needs a webmail account or an account for the german university network contact me :P4 -

About a month ago told the director we need our own broadband line instead of sharing the crappy one from the shared office building as we rely on internet for all our systems. He said no because we'd have to pay for it and the shared one is free.
Today the shared internet has gone down and all our systems are inaccessible including the phones. I'm just sat here like "told you so", and there is nothing I can do as have no control of it 👍6 -

Beware: Here lies a cautionary tale about shared hosting, backups, and -goes without saying- WordPress.
1. Got a call from a client saying their site presented an issue with a third-party add-on. The vendor asked us to grant him access to our staging copy.
2. Their staging copy, apparently, never got duplicated correctly because, for security reasons, their in-house dev changed the name of the wp-content folder. That broke their staging algo. So no staging site.
3. In order to recreate the staging site, we had to reset everything back to WP defaults. Including, for some reason, absolute paths inside the database. A huge fucking database. Because WordPress.
4. Made the changes directly in a downloaded sql file. Shared hosting, obviously, had an upload limit smaller to the actual database.
5. Spent half an hour trying to upload table by table to no avail.
6. In-house uploads a new, fixed database with the help of the shared hosting provider.
7. Database has the wrong path. Again.
8. In-house performs massive Find and Replace through phpMyAdmin on the production server.
9. Obviously, MySQL crashes instantly and the site gets blocked for over 3 hours for exceeding shared hosting limits.
10. Hosting provider refuses to accept this was caused by such a stupid act and says site needs to be checked because queries are too slow.
11. We are gouging our eyeballs as we see an in-house vs. hosting fight unfold. So we decide to watch a whole Netflix documentary in between.
12. Finally, the hosting folds and enables access to the site, which is obvi not working because, you know, wrong paths.
13. Documentary finishes. We log in again, click restore from backup. Go to bed. Client phones to bless us. Client’s in-house dev probably looking for a cardboard box to pack his stuff first thing in the morning. \_(ツ)_/¯ -
I fucked up.
I shared information that should have never been said with my wife.
Now she knows and she won't leave it alone.
It's changed her perception of me, clearly, and she's made several comments that have bothered me for a couple reasons.
In either case, the damage is done and there's nothing I can do to stop this shit train from rolling me over.15 -
Been stuck with a fucking 13mbit internet connection shared between three people for the past seven years. Lived cheap in a nice location, so it was worth it, still frustrating af. Finally moved, new city, new place, new internet. Currently sitting on 300mbit at home. Downloaded update for car nav, 25gb, took about 15 minutes, where it would previously have taken all day. It’s late, and stupid RSpec has decided to only mock calls to a particular method in some specs but not in others.
`allow(object).to receive(:method).with(resource_arg).and_return(“some\ntext”)`
Works in a few specs, but not the rest. Why? Who the fuck knows. Probably some shared state between specs that isn’t supposed to happen.
HAHA JUST KIDDING
After refactoring my specs to use unique ‘resource’ names for each call because I’ve had shared state issues before.
and after refactoring my model code to remove a lot of now-unused dependency injection (because maybe it was mocking a different object than got passed in?)
Guess what?
When creating my mock objects, I forgot to link them together. That’s it. A 14-character change. And suddenly they all pass.

I can’t remember if I shared this cringe with you all or if I was too embarrassed by it, but…
In the spirit of giving, I gift you all this cringey parody song I recorded 3 years ago. “I Program in C”. Lyrics written by Chris Frederick on amiright.com, song parodied is I Go to Extremes by Billy Joel.

Someone posted this to our shared channel. I'm so tired of people thinking that developers "just need to push a few buttons".
Am I crazy for believing that all I can accomplish in 4 hours is read their documentation (or there lack of), and maybe write few tests for the slew of things they'll be asking for??? And maybe, just maybe, get my local environment running.
Why does everyone think that developers know the location of the "magic button"???3 -
I was experimenting with a load test suite called 'Siege' to build and scale increasingly complex searches against our new site search engine. I assumed that an old iMac couldn't have generated a crushing load against the beta servers and I learned two things the day I wrote and started that script before heading to lunch:
1) Beta and Production shared MSSQL instances
2) That single iMac was more than enough to take the whole production site down... -
Got to write a post to reddit about most influential games in my life. I wrote about the legend of zelda and fortresscraft by projector games because the creator inspired me to be an indie. A co-worker shared his wisdom with me today:
"It's okay for your job to be the side quest of your story, just don't forget the main quest"
And I'm left thinking, that's deep as shit, but if my track record in Skyrim is anyting to go by I'm fucked.
At least the easter holidays are coming up. Back to the main quest :D1 -

When did the meaning of
"Statically linked", under Linux, change from
This binary includes all libraries it depends on and will run on any device that runs a sufficiently compatible hardware and kernel.
to
This binary will only run on these 3 Ubuntu versions, because it still depends on a fuckton of shared-objects of " default" libraries and this shit-distro is the only one, that comes pre-bloated with all of them.5 -
Don't rebase and force-push a shared feature branch that's still in active development. FFS. A "senior" developer should know better.1

So recently a 0-day exploit was discovered in WP plugin Kaswara Modern WP Bakery Page (https://zdnet.com/article/...).
A customer's shared hosting space was taken down (about 6 websites) after this vulnerability had been exploited and although we removed the malicious code, & changed credentials the hosting company demands we update ALL Wordpress plugins to latest AND provide them a virus scan report of our local PC before putting the webspace back online??? WTF???
That just strikes me as outrageous. Thoughts?10 -
Hostinger
Hostgator
DigitalOcean for VPS ?
Something else ?
Please do suggest a host for shared hosting.
Moving from GoDaddy 🤦😅.
I know, shouldn't have tried in the first place.17 -
I had a ticket to enhance the loading of a page.
So instead of doing 40K requests to a MySQL DB in order to generate a tree and display it to to the user on each page visit, the initial query was optimized and moreover, the results are saved in a MongoDB which will then are served to the user on each page visit.
Long story short, after a code review the code got shipped to production and there was a bug which got fixed in a Hotfix shortly afterwards.
I got all the blame for the bug.
I don't deny I have a responsibility for the bug.
Do you guys think the code reviewer also has a shared responsibility for the bug?4 -
That feeling of elation when you rig two timer UI elements with different behavior to a shared Chronometer object, saving the app memory overhead and increasing its performance, only for the designer to berate you for making the background the wrong shade of green. :|

Bought my first VPS, because the shared plan we are using is shit.
Spent just half an hour trying to log in, because upon registration they encouraged a strong password with simbols and everything.
But in reality a root password can only contain letters, numbers, underscore and minus sign... The fuck is wrong with you? Reducing the entropy is one thing, but really fucking up the most essential part of a VPN setup?7 -

Back in the old days, ie. before facebook, I used to save all my funny email attachments to a folder. I got talking to one of the support guys. Seemed a nice fella. So, I network shared my folder and told him to how to connect. I did suggest that he probably shouldn't share it with everyone else in support as some of the material was a tad risqué.
I realised he hadn't taken notice of this advice when I walked in the office and all the support PC CD drives were randomly opening and closing and the PCs playing farting noises. (Anyone remember that?)
I had to go round all the PCs and kill the process.
I then returned to my own machine and disconnected the shared drive. -

Now this is fucking ridiculous... Our website is being constantly limited though we've never reached even 80% of the available CPU resource.
The hosting said that we had the CPU fault (that fucking cyanide spike on the graph that triggers the limit once) because of huge load on the server. The FUCKING SERVER... Not our virtual environment. And once more because of the RESOURCE MONITORING service caused a server restart. For fucks sake, really???
And apparently it's perfectly normal that all users even ones that run in low resources are being limited to a level that a request takes 30 seconds to complete instead of frickin' 1...
The best they could offer is to move us to a new server, which will arrive in two weeks, if the problem persist. IT'S PERSISTING FOR FUCKING MONTHS YOU MORON. I wonder how much time would have been taken you to realise the server shutdown this week if I hadn't phoned you in 5 minutes. FUCK!
Every shared hosting is that garbage or am I just the choosed one?11 -
WTF is wrong with Manjaro, every package I install gets "error while loading shared libraries". VSCode, chromium, even yaourt?! I mean this just doesn't even fucking work.

PSA: The smaller the compute shader workgroups the more efficient they are, down to the wave size (32 on nvidia). Not exactly sure why, but looks like if you don't need group shared memory always have your workgroups be wave sized
Just this alone gave me a 30%+ performance increase. And combined with a few other changes got me from 50 µs to 10 µs, yay!5 -

I swear this mofo runs all of my code through pylint, he comments about every PEP8 inconsistency and every formatting decision he doesn't like.
Same guy also got in a small debate with one of our converts from the older project where they used C#, because he still writes everything in Windows-style CamelCase. After that, when we needed to decide on a password for a shared thing, I came up with "camel_case".1 -

c++ has a little bit of a learning curve, I think.
Used smart pointers everywhere in my code because I heard that's what we gotta do nowadays.
When learning about shared vs unique vs weak, I disregarded weak pointers because I didn't really understand them.
"That sounds like something for liberal pansies", I said to myself, then continued on with my STRONG shared and unique pointers.
Now my app leaks memory like a MOTHERFUCKER, if you can believe that.
So now I need to go back and manage my object lifetime with more intent instead of just making everything a shared pointer. Fuckin circular references. Fuckin reaping what I fuckin sow. God damn.9 -

I’m rarely at the initiative of a meeting, but when I am, my approach is: what questions need to to be answered? Time spent in the meeting is answering those questions without beating around the bush. I request precise answers, no "we shoulds" or vague responses. Meeting usually ends with clear answers/resolutions written down and shared so there aren’t any "that’s not what we agreed upon"1

When your team has only one shared testing device, but everybody seems to need it at the same time 😖

Asking that someone why he hadn't shared that earlier was seen as complete disrespect against all management. -
Being a zoomer means leaving your favorite indie musician on repeat overnight for them to earn a bit more money.
Being a zoomer means never leaving a one-star review on your Uber driver because if you do this, they fire them, put them on an internal blacklist that is unofficially shared between such bloody companies and they'll never find a job and probably die of starvation.9 -
Hi. Quick question, I came across a rant that described the best tools for a designer to help developers be on the same page for the prototypes. Can you guys suggest some? I remember there was one that shared the same exact hex color or code for UI/ux interfaces between designers and developers.6

I just tested a VPS and it was kind of impressive: I just had shared hosting until now and it is a total difference when you're having full root access.
Kind of hating these greedy shared hosting fuckers now ;)
Because it was just for testing purposes, I wanted to try the mysterious command "rm -rf / --no-preserve-root".
It was working for around 5 minutes and after that literally no command worked anymore!
Not even reboot worked :P
Then I tried reboot it via the VPS panel :) End of the story: vps panel chrashed with error message: unable to start vps :P
I thought it was kind of funnny and nice to share & thanks for reading 'til here!5 -
Well I would say a pretty humbling experience was my last job interview where my new boss and hr guy were truly shared by my skills and then the first day at work where my boss said please do this decision, I really need an opinion by an experienced developer like you as I am not sure which one is the better one.1

I’m working on server monitoring system. I found that I need to pay for most server monitor services, and ones that are free/open source didn’t sound like they fit my use case (b/c the server i need to monitor is shared,) so I basically said “f*<k it I’ll do it myself.” I find it fun to work on something that I feel the need to make.1 -

Got a nice solution, part of a micro-services system. Interfaces where they should be. Single responsibilities. Easily unit testable (and plenty of tests in there).
Then the Senior rewrites things because he didn’t see the point in having interfaces and couples every layer to a shared set of objects, and those objects are now shared by all the other micro-services too. One change in one and we have to repeat it in every service. 🤦♂️4 -
In html/css class

Any Kotlin fans out here? What's your favourite feature?
To me: coroutines and the flow API. I can't wait for the state flow and shared flow APIs to be released. Goodbye Rx! It'll come probably in the next release, which might come in a week already, because then JetBrains (Kotlin developer) hosts their online alternative to KotlinConf.8 -

Is it just me, or do REST API's literally rule the world right now?
Feeling like I can automate the universe.

So time for some stories!
DevRant Masters, what did you find the most Challenging when starting out as a dev?
For me it wasnt actually writing good code, it was more about finding out WHERE to write it, in this clusterfuck of shared projects inside projects.1 -
The manager that believed that sharing code was bad. We had a web and a windows client over the same db. No code shared. He'd rather duplicate the code and maintenance than share it. And the BL should be put in stored procedures, 'cause that's so easy to change in-flight...

I was on a call with a colleague and we talked about my next tasks.
He was building some stubs and shared his screen with me so I knew what to do after he pushed these changes.
We talked about refactoring one method and he wrote "throw new NotImplementedException()" in the first line of the method and said: "I'm evil ;)". -
Now I have enough of this shit I fucking go grab a chainsaw and cut you into the tiniest pieces possible then pour gasoline on your fucking servers and lit them on fire. How the fuck should I remain calm if there is at least two fucking email I can't send because your fucking piece of shit server gets blacklisted EVERY FUCKING WEEK.
Oh how cool you made ipv6 available to shared plans so outlook servers won't blacklist mails. But guess what, it STILL DOESN'T WORK!!! Not to mention that you automatically modify my existing SPF record and set the shared storage ipv6 address to the main domain which should be pointing to the vps (still working though but have no idea why). I am so fucking fed up with people for today, and it's only just morning. -
Yet again, another feature hand off where most everything I was told in the meeting is contradicted by the feature doc and design they give me at the end. Prototyping is making me feel more and more like an idiot. Thing ain't drawing correctly? It's because a month ago I had a copy paste error and I was doing am unnecessary conversion. Not really a bug, but I have recently finished organising our Domain Controller.
It was a server set up about 8 year ago by someone with zero experience with server OS.
I had to completely re-work every single group, GPO, User Account, Login script, shared drives and DHCP.
I have now solved 90% of re-occurring problems with our network.
Now they want me to do the same with our Digital Storefront... -
The term 'continuous rot' just came to mind as something like this: A lone/sole developer is hired to implement a solution but dispite the illusional good intent shared by everyone at the beginning, time constrains will soon come into play and the code deteriorates at a rapid pace until the developer can't handle it anymore... But someone else comes to continue the work... And the rot continues... And once again... And again...again....

A little help on Django
So I just started learning Python and Django Framework and I have one question...
Are the variables shared between visitors?
I mean, let's say I have a variable named "school"
school = "school1"
A visitor from X location enters and changes this variable to "school2". A new visitor enters the page from Y location and reads the variable 'school'. What is going to show on visitor Y? "school1" or "school2".2 -

This is all done without accessing any unauthorized apis, as the LMS always returns all student marks and then hides the ones with a False 'shared' key. School administration caught me, so I've now shut it down. I have a meeting with the deans tomorrow. Any advice? (Again, this is all done using existing methods found within this LMS)4

It's fuckin midnight, after an exhausting day. Instead of working on a company, why don't each one of us just create a blog site, then add some ads, we share our url here and we'll gonna visit each shared url to generate traffic so we can generate revenue.
Oh if only it could work that way. These what if scenarios sometimes coming to my mind at night. Sorry for the interruption, keep scrolling.3 -
Not sure if this was already shared but..
Q: why did the programmer quit his job?
A: because he didn't get arrays (a raise) -
Thought I'd share this awesome project to you guys that one of my friends made.
https://github.com/MSPaintIDE/...
He's trying to get it to over a thousand stars so it would be appreciated if you shared it with all your dev friends 😄
Edit: didn't know what category was best, but now that I think about it it should have been posted in question3 -
Do you think that's a good idea to work with 4 developers on a shared development server without functional or technical specs and versioning software or testing methods/environment?
Just asking for a friend, not for my future employer...2 -
A new product release plan is shared on friday with everyone
On Monday morning its goes like this:
My boss: "when have we planned to do feature x?"
Me: "am sorry, I forgot my release plan at home."
My boss: in his mind ->"i thought you shared on Friday?"
Me: in my mind -> "Just say it loud" -
i was tasked to coordinate an enterprise release. ran into some issues that my lead knows of. only problem is, she didnt bother to transition or shared it with me. worst: she gets mad after I called her mobile phone cause she doesnt want to be disturbed. she blames me for her and her husbands argument over a very crucial call.

tfw a company jvm takes 10 minutes to start because it is bloated with shared libraries it doesn't need.

!rant I shared it in a thread, but in case y’all weren’t in it… the podcast I guested on dropped! Does this mean I am a professional now? 😅

Is there a market for novelty ducks? I shared an office with a coworker so i cannot really speak to mine, i still got this one just for the sake of having one. It looked a bit different than the usual ones but its not exactly novelty, but it got me thinking...
anyway, i present you "standing duck with hat"3 -
Was learning c++ really fast, but I stopped because I just can't find a way to deploy the applications with their dependant libraries on linux.cant I just include the .so files in the same directory as my executable.12

Think I’ve finally finished setting up my shared hosting server for my clients websites 😁
I found Webmin a few days ago and spent a few evenings sorting it out, so far so good. Should save a lot of time ☺️3 -
When I shared my terminal setup with a bit of ricing to a Telegram group, someone asked what my terminal was. I said it was just the default terminal on my Fedora 27. Not that XTerm stuff or any other extra terminal emulators. He still insists that every terminal has a name. He's right.
I shall name my terminal "Default".3 -
I am thinking to migrate from a shared hosting (I have a few websites, some of them with WordPress) to a 2GB RAM droplet, but I am concerned about having to create a mail server.
Any opinion about that?
Thanks! :)11 -
Share an action says add more people to test your actions.
And also it says once the user has opened the link shared, they can start.
But on the Assistant app on mobile, I can't find my app. Anyone into this?6 -
Question: to those who may have been hosting resellers. Will upgrading to a VPS decrease performance for clients as compared to when you resell shared hosting?
Also, would anyone happen to know any good shared hosting reseller plans? :/5 -
Why does a site have two caching plugins? Whoever made this site (that I'm working on improving) needs to get new and updated training.
And why is this site using godaddy shared hosting? I couldn't even update more than two plugins at a time.2 -
Had that moment where I thought to myself I need some sleep.
Working on Android app, using shared preferences (for a lay person, a key value store for settings)
Kept storing data in store and checked repeatedly from different parts of the app for the data. No clue where it went when storing (did store correctly)
Found out I was storing in a store labelled X _Y and was reading from store called XY.3 -
Just migrated a behemoth of a wordpress installation and it works twice as fast on our shared hosting than the previous dedicated server with cdn it was on.
After just 2 emails from the previous website admin i understood why... The guy clearly has no idea what he is doing.
There should be an IT police squad for cases like these.1 -
Not super ranty but what I’m interested in how passwords are managed in your organisation?
I feel dirty receiving passwords through slack and having a spreadsheet on a shared drive seems like madness.
I’ve worked at organisations before that have a single login to a password manager. However theoretically I still have access to that as no one would have changed the password.
Organisational password manager softwares are really expensive!14 -
How would you go about trying to make anything that would like connect to google maps, check the locations to those who have shared their locations with you, and notifies you when they start to move. It would have to constantly refresh their location on google maps.1

What do you use for performance monitoring on your infrastructure?
My company uses zabbix, OpenNMS and Nagios to monitor different parts of our infrastructure (from shared web hosting to OCCAS to IPTV to FutureVoice to Atlassian servers) but has no real-time performance checks.
I’ve set netdata master with prometheus backlog and grafana dashboards to monitor different metrics, however I am not sure whether any better approach could be done. Any suggestions?2 -

Imagine loading a shared CSS for your subdomain site from your main site via PHP over cURL and then embed it in a <style/> tag on every single damn request.

I'm writing this in response to the article shared by @Christine
God!!! And I wanted to start learning web development. Should I even start with HTML? I mean.. ugh!
Any SANE web developer here who could share their usual tools for building a website.
And if you would use entire different tool sets for different sites, which ones would you use for which kinds of sites?
(Is this question too much?)7 -
Hey, I have a question concerning the use of jpa annotations in a kotlin multiplatform project and how to organize shared data classes.
I already posted the question on stackoverflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
I would appreciate every help :) -
What are the pros and cons of creating a builder (and a dozen related files and classes) vs using a partial shared view?
For what is basically 2-3 html elements reused a few times in a single page. -
I have this love-hate relationship with strong typing.
Right now, the types are shared between:
Postgres <-> DB Data Models <-> GraphQL <-> TypeScript <-> MobX-State-Tree2 -
How do you keep shared libraries used by multiple microservices in sync?
For example, a model class in a shared lib used by some of your microservices. If a new field is added, how would you quickly identify which microservices need to be updated, redeployed? And do it quickly.
Or say the model library has many classes, used by different services. 1 class changed, and only 2/10 services reference it. Do you target only three 2 or so of them? Or would those be bad design?21 -
I shared my steam library with my little brother yesterday. I almost forgot how fun it is to backseat play Kerbal Space Program.2

Next.js is a piece of shit framework, (Like React is next level shit), which enforces things in the name of "convention" and is just a PITA to work with. Have to migrate an existing project to next? Make sure you use css-in-js, or you cant use next. Want to use a shared layout? lol, gtfo. Want statically optimized assets? make sure you call the correct apis in pages or you get no optimization.

I honestly can't remember which I used first, but my dad had a monochrome apricot with snake and a Texas instruments with Parsec. I think we still have the TI lying around somewhere.
I remember it being something we shared an interest in and it's a shame most parents today view games as a babysitting tool at best. -
What would you recommend for an programming aprentice?
Dedicated server (DS) or shared hosting(SH)?
A DS is more expensive, but i could learn much more in Ops. Shared hosting is cheaper (and i already have a virtual one with access to root, but no sudo)...

PS i only choose swiss hoster ;)5 -
I've done a social anxiety test to find not-so-surprising results. I shared that to a group of programmers then hm, that's a lot of anxious people. Are we socially anxious naturally or what? are you guys socially anxious even?8

can you give me/point me to some good example problem/exercise for multithreading? as in, something that's small in scope, but actually requires dealing with most of the multithreading issues & complications? race conditions, synchronization, locks, shared memory access, cross-thread calls/callbacks, etc?2 -

took me four hours plus to get a nodejs app to successfully run on cpanel.
at this point I just want to sleep and sleep forever.
why will anyone ever want to deal with this?
the ssh access? complete crap but it was better than having to deal with the janky ui, it was also slow as fuck1 -
I have an iot solutions company which has 0.5 millions hits per day just from 7 devices. It is on shared server and it bogs down every now and then. In future it is going to grow to 100 million hits.
