Girlfriend (art student): “You’re in CS. Why don’t you use Windows? Macs are terrible for programming.”
Me: “macOS is better for doing command line compilation and shit because it supports Unix terminal commands and stuff with a reliable OS that’s better-supported than most Linux OSes. I also have Windows on my laptop too, for Visual Studio.”
Girlfriend: “Only like 1% of people use command line stuff. Windows is better for programming. I’ve seen a lot of CS majors use Windows.”
Me: “Uh. You watch me use my computer every day. The stuff I do in Terminal takes forever on Windows.”
Girlfriend: “Yeah, but Windows is just better for programming though.”

Interesting marketing choice though...

Fuck marketing people who don't understand how to get people to buy into a service. At least the first 3 days were free, otherwise I'd even have lost actual money to that shit 😒 money that's much better spent over here!10 -
I can't believe that something I threw together in an afternoon to make my work flow better turned into something people actually use! People are opening issues and suggesting things. Never thought it would get over 2.5k downloads! 😮18

Dev: I think we should send Dev2 for some training and certification
Manager: We do not train people or have them certified. When you train people and especially if you have them certified they always leave the company for better offers so we no longer do that.
Dev: So the plan is to have a the company operated by a bunch of untrained uncertified people?
Manager: 😡 You are being disrespectful again20 -
If you want to improve, be with people that are already better than you.
That's what I do, and so far so good.8 -
I thought, maybe, MAYBE I’ll meet a better class mate for uni group project since I’m at master degree instead of bachelor...
WELL FUCK, there is still people who played dead when I tried to chat them. Fuck group project, fuck you if you read this, I know you’re here sometimes14 -
Although I know it's nothing, the irony is real.
My room is connected to the power group together with 5 other people.
Watching a mass surveillance documentary.
Suddenly my power goes out, the rest stays on.
I know it must be a glitch in the newly installed power management system but damn the timing couldn't be better!4 -
So at the beginning there was assembly.
But people wanted something more highlevel, so C was born.
But writing big projects was a pain so C++ was invented.
But then the web started to become more popular and C++ wasn‘t really good at that, so Rasmus Lerdorf created PHP.
And then everything moved to the client and should be loaded dynamically for better UX, so everyone writes JS.
But JS doesn‘t have a good performance, so people created web assembly compiled from C...
Am i the only one who sees the irony in this?7 -
I used to use Firefox few years ago, but people around me called me fool and told me that Chrome was much better.
Now I use Chrome and you devRanters are making me feel like fool again.
Lesson Learnt: Stand straight on your decisions23 -
When I self-published my first indie game on steam and people actually started buying it.
Remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of vodka trying to tell my girlfriend like that lunatic dotconnecting on a whiteboard meme guy, this is really bad because too much people bought it.
They should spend their money on something useful instead of me, I felt like a fraud.
It turned out good in the end tho, made some updates for it that made it better so i felt better about it, plus got a job from a publisher because they liked my game 😃6 -
Picked this up the other day. Hope it's as good as people have been telling me.
If so, then here begins a new journey for me to better code.11 -
1 fix my crappy sleep schedule.
2 organise my time better.
3 stop being a glutton.
4 earn a aws cert.
5 build a portfolio site.
6 build projects to go on portfolio site.
7 find a new job?
8 do some machine learning.
9 find love?
10 continue automating people out their job at their request.4 -
Just found a stackoverflow thread that had no answer and 2 comments. Here are the comments:
Person 1: Did you find a solution for this?
Author: Yes, please email me [...@gmail.com].
Bruh, what's wrong with some people???? Writing nothing at all would be better then that7 -
I officially cut ties with all my family.
Shitty, cringy, egoist people to ever exist.
They treat me like shit. Just use me as their slave all the time and when anything goes wrong, blame me for everything.
I consider you all my family now. Though we are virtual friends but you guys are better than real family.24 -
Sometimes I really feel bad for windows.
Someone with a potato Windows laptop that costs around $400 who has a bit of IT knowledge:
"Windows is so shit. Why does people buys this?"
installs Linux:
"OMG! Linux is so much better"
Even though it'll probably take a day or two to get the touchpad and wifi working. Want to install a software? Sure let me just download the source, compile it (Which will take another 2 hour to meet all the dependecies).
Another scenario:
Someone with a potato Windows laptop that costs around $400:
"Windows is such shit. Why does people buy this?"
Buys a $2000 Macbook.
"OMG! So much better. That's why people love mac so much"
I've used Fedora and Elementary for the last 3 years. But the amount of hate Windows gets is ridiculous.16 -
fucking mashable. I hate it so much. did you see their story today? they're supposed to be about "tech" BUT THEY TALKED ABOUT WHAT THE COLOR OF YOUR FUCKING IPHONE SAYS ABOUT YOU. THEN THEY TALKED ABOUT A CASE. YOU FUCKING DUMBASS, THATS AN ANDROID CASE NOT AN IPHONE CASE. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THE FUCK THESE PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED? 99% OF THE PEOPLE ON DEVRANT COULD DO A 100% BETTER JOB. AMERICA AND OTHER COUNTRIES ARE ALL NOW STUPIDER BY LOOKING AT YOUR CONTENT. FUCK YOU MASHABLE🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕19

I love stackoverflow!
1. Developer who knows SO, and loves it : Yeah, my friend!
2. Developer who knows SO, but hates it : Go home, you're drunk.
3. Normal people who doesn't know the dev world : Why would you like a stack to overflow?
4. Normal people who is a tech savvy : Ah, the place where people share their questions and answers to make a better software and to be together? I never used it, but I heard it is awesome!
5. Idiots : What is that?
6. Grammarly : Recommended word is "stack overflow"
7. Dishwasher : Fatal error!6 -
Since roughly 981 Malaysians are using my app now for helping the needy. So I decided to send this message to those who use my platform , to remind them to stay strong.
Because I begin to see people are fed and slowly I believe someday we can do a better job than our government.8 -
So i just wanted to say thank you. Everyone on devrant.
It became a safe place for me to rant about stuff, getting feedback from awesome people and so much more. Also i learned some things on dR that making my (dev)life better!
Most important devrant is making me feel way better, when you read about people having the same struggles.
But not only the rants are making this awesome. Its every single one of you.
Thank you, stay awesome!2 -
DevRant is the best. I just gave Imgur another try. It still makes me depressed and loose faith in humanity. All those stupid people. DevRant is much better. Here we have smart people that know how to approach problems and understand jokes.8
-
Made possible by Synergy! If you don't use it, you should. I'd be curious if people have dropped it for any better alternatives?11
-
Now, I am very shy and introverted.
I have always been that way.
I really hate having to socialize.
I've recently forced myself to talk more to people and it seems to work pretty well.
I may still love my computer more, but slowly I am getting better.4 -
Used to pay $5/mo on a small instance for my personal site. Then I discovered Kubernetes and realized my site didn't scale! No canary deployments! So I upgraded and pay $200/mo now. Took weeks to configure. Millions of people can now read my resume. Damn, it's never looked better8
-
The registration thingy for a Dutch devRant meetup is online again! (Https://Linu.xxx)
Better spam protection.
Would love to see more people joining!17 -
Why do people hate windows 10? Granted I'm not super picky about my OS but windows 10 works just fine for me, and looks better than win7 imho.16
-
I used to love my job.
Then I disliked my job.
The people I worked with kept me at my job.
When those people left all I had was my dislike.
Now I hate my job.
And I'm really starting to hate the people I work with.
I'm not even sure I even want to keep developing anymore, but at this point I couldn't support my family any other way.
So I'll stay smouldering for the next 40 years, in a career dumpster fire that's long lost its magic just so I can give my family a better life.12 -
I seen a buncha people get all sentimental lately so ill have a go 'swell.
I joined devrant ~a year ago, when i was feeling really down and prolly ready to just fuckin end it all. I met a lotta amazing people and im safe to say i made some friends 'ere (yknow who y r). Thanks a lot for showin me there are sociopatic maniac idiots like me, im in a much better place rn, and i prolly wouldnt be here without yall. Thanks D and T for making this platform.8 -
Why are we still having degree vs autodidact arguments/debates?
It's fucking 2018, who gives a flying fuck how you learn?
Stop giving a shit about how people learn and give a shit about their abilities and skills.
I'm tired of people from both sides (people with degrees and autodidacts) acting like they're better than the other. Stop being arrogant cunts.
Some people have the self control and motivation to teach themselves.
Congratulations! That's fucking awesome.
Others don't and could use a structured environment like University to motivate and encourage them.
Hey it happens. At least you're trying.
My god. Just stop with this shit already. It's annoying and unnecessary.
If you made it this far, how's your week been going?26 -
So I'm sitting down at a park bench coding. People are getting close & keep staring at my MacBook. I better leave...8
-
People who message “I’m getting a error” without any context or even better the actual error message, no one else can see your screen and we can’t magic a fix, and we’re not f***ing psychic, tell us what the f***ing error is. Or better yet, figure it f***ing out like the rest of us, you also have google - go nuts16
-
I love how C++ is getting better and better with every new standard. How preprocessor-hacks become less and less relevant.
Now C++ 20 is finally giving us modules, and we only had to wait 26 years longer than the Fortran guys. Well done, people. Well done.
slowclap.gif7 -
Can people just fucking stop using "hacked" as a synonym for "my password has been found out"? Even devs do this shit! Devs should know better about what a "hacked" account is.14
-
The best part about being a dev is solving problems with an infinite number of pieces, with people who are 10,000 times better than I am, from wherever I want. I get paid to basically play with Legos all day.
Hard to find that.3 -
In the last weeks there has been some turmoil on the Fediverse (Mastodon, GNUSocial, Pleroma etc) about "how nazis prefer a certain kind of software and therefore must the developer of the software take action".
One solution is to make software "harder to install so nazis can't install one"
The thing is, that people like that do a better job of spreading the views and the message of the self-proclaimed nazis. I wish people just started to ignore them.6 -
An ex of mine broke up with me when I changed my career path to programming. She said she wouldn't want to date with a programmer, I said 'ok bye'.
Guess who has a better career and dated with smarter, nicer, more funny and more attractive people since then 😎7 -
Mini rant ahead:
So just wanted to get something off of my chest in relation to something that continues to prop up constantly in the OSS community.
OSS is not better than proprietary software and proprietary software is not greater than OSS.
Sick of seeing people complain when they see someone using proprietary software like google chrome and the like in comparison to open source alternatives.
We understand that the freedom offered by OSS is clearly better but we should not 'hate' or 'actively avoid' proprietary software.
Key example for me personally is that I use Gamemaker Studio 2 to develop my games and the amount of people who keep negatively branding that choice and tell me to use Godot because it is 'better' and 'open source'
People just really need to respect other peoples choices, if you have something to say on the matter when you see someone using something you may not agree with, sure say your opinion, but don't defend it and go on the attack because other people use differently licensed software.
* And end scene *28 -

Last week attended a conference of ~40 people. Some junior developers, and some very senior engineers at major tech companies. We all hung out and geeked out like normal (gasp!) humans, and had a great week together.
Nothing better than seeing a top engineer rock out to Lady Gaga @ karaoke. Amazing, exhausting week 🎊⛷🏕2 -
I seriously don't know why some people still using Google Drive, DropBox. Pied Piper is much better
www.piedpiper.com7 -
Linus Torvalds: 'I'll never be cuddly but I can be more polite' (BBC)
https://bbc.com/news/...
I could easily point you to various tweet storms by people who criticise my 'white cis male' behaviour, while at the same time cursing more than I ever do.
I'm trying to get rid of my outbursts, and be more polite about things, but technically wrong is still technically wrong, and I won't start accepting bad code just to make people feel better about themselves.9 -
> at my previous job as mechanical engineer at an HVAC company
> was given recurring monotonous task
> decided to start a sizeable side project to automate it
> people got pissed at me because it worked too well, i.e., took their jerbs
> decided automating things was more fun than actual current job; also, people should be more hyped about continuous improvement
> switched careers into web-development
i.e., my most successful project was the one that changed my life for the better.2 -
What is it with these companies and mandatory updates?
Microsoft with windows 10. Sorry your doing work? Nah, we've decided your going to update now! Sorry, we based our default update time on people not working late at night.
Philips hue. Wanna turn on your lights? Sorry, mandatory firmware update. You'd better install that before being able to see.
YouTube app on ps4. No sorry, can't open this, mandatory 80mb update.
FUCK SAKE PEOPLE.8 -
sometimes we try to make things better and realize people just want the same old non functional bloated shit...
-
i think the better (or maybe just longer) you’re a programmer, the less funny memes get. i’m so sick and tired of them. when i started there was occasionally a funny one, now everything is annoying.
seriously, people find this shit funny?12 -
Please stop the operational system's war. People might get hurt.
Seriously guys, every time someone says X is better then Y, my eyeballs starts rolling.
(I'm a Linux && Windows user, btw.)12 -
People ranting about programmers in <insert language> not being programmers because <insert other language> is better...4
-
It fucking pisses me off when people compare experience as a benchmark of his performance or knowledge while hiring for job and even salaries depend on that. How do you know that, that guy has jerked around while the younger guy with less years of experienco would work better and harder.
What is your experience with people like that?10 -
Incompetence of people around me drives me mad. I see a piece of shit code and I can’t stop myself from improving it.
Also better developers around me. I need to find out how they’re better and beat them6 -
Facebook has 👍
Stackoverflow has 🔺

Whooo....! If you are creating a content creation platform for people, then better hurry :P7 -
It has sated my hunger for never-ending knowledge.
It allows me to freely express myself.
It has given me the goal to surpass all these people who are better than me.
Also unlimited anger that can end me up behind bars. -
New opportunity coming to the people who try. Got this opportunity, i better not suck at it. Give it regular time everyday to earn atleast some title before my degree.9
-
How comes companies don't give a shit abt onboarding?! The better your onboarding processes the faster the people you hired become productive?? Should never take me three weeks jus to get access...and when I do it's a problem ...should be seamless
At least that's what makes sense to me2 -
just remembered watching a video where a little shit wannabe programmer was interviewed by another shit wannabe it professional "hacker" and the first shit claimed he designed a new language that is better with a compiler 10 times faster and better than gcc when he demonstrated his language it was nothing but a header file with couple of define statements for different C function.
and this dude was in the news and was glorified by people and shit
#justturdworldstuff
I'm glad i left "my" country3 -
My first programming experience was in highschool. Within two months I was a better programmer than my teacher.
This just indicates that the people who hire programming teachers need to know what programming is before hiring the wrong person.3 -
When you realize you had sharpening enabled in your monitor settings and you turn it off and shit just looks so much better...
I mean this is a necessary setting when using VGA but this monitor is connected via DVI!
Also some people just do not seem to notice this and leave this enabled on their screens.4 -
Game devs/other content creation people, how do you version control large asset files? So far I've been using git, but is there a better way?9
-
Reviewing code in a project, found this one:
# Todo: Fix horrible parent member check. People may have been killed for better code
-- horrible code here -- -
Just created my first discord server after seeing so many people from here mention it. The questions I have are, why? What makes it better than say slack or something else? Is it prone to spam or bots? How is it for gaming?8
-
Ubuntu 18.04 will be sending basic telemetry to Canonical by default. Great for people like me who have to use Linux for work and want a better UX. 😀8
-
When people talk about how homemade cranberry sauce is better, I compare them to people who refuse to use libraries.4
-
Why do people think it is weird to have job (programming) also be your hobby?!?
I get annoyed with this kind of people, if I like what I do, and have spent infinite amount of hours enjoying while learning, I think it is normal to have job as your hobby. Or even better phrasing, it is normal to have hobby as your job!!!4 -
Not only coding, but studying Computer Science has changed a lot in my life. For example, learning about CPU scheduling algorithms made me manage time for my personal tasks a lot better. Earlier I used to waste a lot of time by doing tasks in out of sync order. Also coding made me realize how dumb most people are!3
-
Why people like Google pixel
Worst design
No waterproofing
No wireless charging
No dual camera stuff
And now no headphones jack 😐😕
Samsung galaxy S8
And LG V30 Is far better choice4 -
Why do the java people say that java is superior over C#, when in fact it is more or less the same language? I never hear C# guys crying that their language is better, but I hear java guys all the time. And the fact is even that C# has more language features IMO makes it a better language. .Net is more or less the same as the Java API but we have had DateTime objects and a lot of good things, that Java is now copying, for a long time. Just curious on some ideas why Java is better now and forever no matter what times infinity, but why? And if someone is so stupid as to write that Java is the better language without reading this far then that proves my point. ps. Now that .Net and C# is being open sourced there is not the open source argument anymore either22

Wondering how many of you have ADD/ADHD, diagnosed or not. I've heard people say that many programmers have ADD or ADHD and that it generally makes them a better programmer. I myself have ADD and I feel like it makes me a better programmer, but I have to work harder at paying attention to my wife/social life.24
-
If someone asks you something that's easily google-able, they are probably just trying to break the ice with you.
Been reading a few books this year on people skills. We write code to make the lives of people better. To do that we need to understand and emphasise with each other -
People use this to argue why node is better. I instead use it to show why node sucks. More is less. Be ready for 3gb node_modules.12
-
Always getting prewrote replys. When you call them, they say they found someone better.
If you ask in which area the other guy excel's you, they hang up...
I was 1 year jobless and endured this shitty replys. Now I got a job, which a lot of people would like to have 😄2 -
At the beginning of programming the languages were complex and you had to think like a machine to do what you had in mind. Now code is art, it's like a poem. That's why some people (including me) when drink a beer or a cup of wine do better code.
Cheers, devs!2 -
I love when @GodHatesMe comments on a rant and people start replying.
I read their name + comment as a single sentence.
@GodHatesMe Because tabs are better, obviously! (fake example)
It literally changes every point people try to make.2 -
If you write blogs and tutorials about programming,
Please don't just throw blocks of code at people. Explain what this code does, why you wrote it in this particular way and not the other, when people should use this technique and when they shouldn't. Also don't make your tutorial specific to a particular library/package unless you specify in the title.
Stop making blogs just for the sake of making them. Make blogs that help people become better. Advertise for your proficient and show others why you love it. Put some effort into your craft people!!2 -
Drinking alcohol is soo good for my social life because my autopilot is far better with people.
Somehow people can actually really get to know and like me then.
Will this ever change for normal me (22 yo) or should I just keep going out?12 -
Ublock orgin the improved version of adblock, access less RAM and filters better than adblock.
Reason I'm posting this, is that I saw a post about adblock and how some people really don't like it anymore as it doesn't block all of the ads like it used to.
Just hoping to save some people from malicious popups/annoying ads.2 -
on dev rant, "web idiots" = people who are way better than me at web dev. they're better than me at that so therefore they are bad. me monkey brain feel safe. ooga booga!
this site should just be called InsecureRant11 -
yet here people are fucking driving nonstop even though our fucking gas prices are through the roof.....
just giving alllllllll our goddamn money away.
also i think this is an awesome project.
far better than the million and 1 stupid tasking boards like monday.com heh10 -

Best part about being a dev...
Satisfaction that people are using you inventions/products to better their lives.
I know it sounds cliché, but software dev is a lot like art.
Guessing, Da Vinci must have felt the same way in the Renaissance.2 -
How can people don't even fucking try to see if there is a better way?
Fuck, I'm constantly even trying to improve my fucking bath routine for fucks sake and these brainless monkeys are gonna be stuck forever with fucking "right click-copy right-click paste instead of keyboard shortcuts" ( just an analogy )
Fuck that makes me angry...2 -
I find it very strange and telling when people tell me that a dev shouldn't "re-invent the wheel", "roll your own" or "leave it to the experts" while simultaneously promoting substandard own-rolled projects by other people that simply got popular.
Kind of a strange elitist double standard that encourages a bad mindset of "I can't be as good as them" and it's toxic.
If you wanna make your own framework / package / etc, just do it, it might even be better.7 -
I'm curious to know how lucrative it is for the people operating those 0-points accounts to post spam comments on this kind of a platform. I don't know the exact numbers of course but I have to think looking for change in your couch cushions is a better return on investment.6
-
I dunno if I should have but I told my clients their video they are having made is shit (not exactly like that)
And that it would likely drive people away and we shouldn't put it on the site if it's going to be like that
80s TV animation is better seriously.1 -
Why is the internet such a toxic place... You voice your personal opinion and instantly have people who believe they are 'better' than you call you a stupid consumer because they use something that others may not care for.
Fuck me people, why can't we just have opinions and respect each other, it's not that fucking hard!7 -
I can't believe it, people are still using dreamweaver, and they doing so because they actually don't know that there are better options. How are you a web dev and using dreamweaver out of ignorance...4
-
Whyyyyyyy do people go back on their word and stab you in the back just to make themselves look better?
Mate, I’ve got a paper trail of your request, detailing EXACTLY what you asked for. Don’t make me use it against you to prove you’re wrong and I’m right... guess I better start collecting emails to use as self defence 😩😔3 -
What's everyone's opinion when it comes to designing modern and/or minimalistic interfaces when using blur or gradients?
I see a lot of people who are hating blur used in UI elements and a lot of people praise the 'death' of gradients, what's everyone else think of these.
I personally love using blur in UI's and do like gradients if done correctly (not 2 colour gradients)
EDIT: I mean what's your opinion on blur and gradients not which one is better :-P12 -
I'm surprised a lot of people still don't realize that passphrases are way better than an 8 character gibberish word.
I've even tried convincing a friend and he thought I was lying.

idk why I'm so anxious about money... I'm not broke, I'm better than most people my age, ffs i have savings, but whenever i think of spending on sh*t i need i start thinking about what if i get fired, what if i have to move back with my parents, where do i put my cat???
wish my brain was doing better tbh7 -
Society would be a much better place if people had same level of emotional/mental self awareness as much as they have physical self awareness.18

I'm a hobbyist photographer but lately I've been getting offers to work on major gigs. Apparently people have started liking my photography.
However, just like some programmers are hardliners when it comes to particular stacks, the camera world is riddled with brand loyalists that can't accept that anything other than their camera gear is better. You have Canon/Nikon users who can't wrap their minds around the fact that Sony is making better cameras for the price.
I ask a question about what lens people recommend and a flame war starts about why X camera is better than Y camera.
Guess what, it ultimately comes down to the skill of the photographer and not the camera. All I wanted was a lens recommendation for a particular style of shooting.
Thing is, all modern cameras are more than capable of doing their jobs.8 -
If number of people using Pokemon Go tries to learn programming go the world would be much better place to code.
-
[sarcasm] Sure, change the front end completely after i spent half a day taking screenshots to compile documentation for other people to you use your tool...Its not like i have anything else better to do anyway >.< [/sarcasm]1

Whenever I go to some major Mastodon server, the explore page contains at least some of the following:
- a post about "rich" people bad
- a post labelling some group of people as "nazis"
- a post promoting some black / lgbt thing
- a post about "left-wing government good, right-wing government bad"
And at least 20% of the posts on the explore page are about how "we" are better than whatever the current negative topic in the media is.18 -
I'm quite the Microsoft fan, so let the downvotes flow, but can you please tell me why:
1. Some consider IE and Edge to be the same thing (when they are not - https://developer.microsoft.com/en-... )
2. Java is better than C# (which I have heard some people say)?7 -
Publishing stuff and receiving feedback and improvement ideas is sush a great feeling. A guy opend an issue today asking for a feature to be implemented and he was very polite. Thanking me for my work.
This is way better than money. Money can't buy that feeling. People like this guy is the reason open source stuff lives. -
Is it only me that I feel I am so special for being a programmer, and also able to think, learn, and analyze better than other people?
I feel like we are small group of people that do magical things that change the world while nobody even realizes or appreciates what we do4 -
Im getting a feeling that the more we try to replace humans with computers and machines, the worse the remaining humans get to interact with. And I dont mean that in a way that computers are better to interact with but in the sense that people tend to forget how to properly work with each other.8

Religion is ruined by people.
God's bugs are our mistakes, the platypi, and turtle penises.
Nature is so much better without us, I enjoy programming but the users are polluting, wasteful, selfish useless beings removing resources from the Earth.
Sometimes I want to become a hacker and ruin rich people's lives.10 -
A message to designers and developers:
please please please stop being so touchy about your designs/software. The final work is meant to be used/enjoyed by end users, customers, clients, young people, old people, disabled people, short attention span people, irrational people, patient people etc. So if they say it's not good enough accept it go back and make it simpler (not necessarily better but simpler) and move on!!
Stop going into defence mode and start throwing your toys out the pram or giving people the silent treatment.
Sorry just been on the receiving end and boy is childish.1 -
It's nice to see people posting what they've been up to during their free time.
Oh wait, did I say nice? No, fuck you and your slightly better circumstances!1 -
Come on bitch. Fucking tell me how programmers were better in the "old times".
People fucking died because of stupid race conditions and bad practices.

Know what really grinds my gears? The fact that at many companies, PM's and QA people aren't required or expected to have even a basic level of knowledge, making communication pretty unpleasant. Even having a grasp of relevant vocabulary would make things so much easier.
Combine this with the bedside manner of a barn-raised sociopath, an ignorance of human and technical capabilities in general, and we have several good reasons to stay at home "sick". What the hell do I keep getting myself into?2 -
People are so cheap. I hear people say things like "Frontend Masters is too expensive." I'm pretty sure that I just got 2k of value in the last 3 hours... Maybe those people aren't 'cheap' per say - but more generally, don't understand the concept of value. I'm sure they see that attribute in their clients, but never themselves. Better for me I suppose!4
-
People that don't realize their microphone is feeding back everyone's voice into the meeting. Mute your fucking mics people, or better yet buy a fucking pair of headphones or earbuds!4
-
Why people think that Mac is better than pc? Im Mac user and I like Mac. I think Apple just uses better hardware and charges extra for it. If you build windows with better hardware then windows will work really fast too. On Mac gradle build takes really less time because of SSD it does not mean Mac is faster. Get SSD for windows and see the difference yourself.
- P.S. Not hater of any OS.6 -
Does social media make you suffer? No? You sincerely enjoy Instagram and TikTok?
Then never listen to all that "social media detox" crackpots. There is no need to feel guilty about what you enjoy.
Some people find social media detox relieving. But some people don't. Detox supposed to make you feel better. If it doesn't but you keep blaming yourself and keep going just because some ray-ban-wearing hipster told you so, stop.
Watch your TikToks. Leave yourself alone.2 -
People sometimes scream to everyone else that tabs are better than spaces, but they don't realize that their IDE most of the times automatically converts tabs in 4 spaces.10
-
Had my first evaluation session today, where people use my software for an hour and see if they like it. Mixed feelings.
For one thing there are indeed bugs here and there, but a lot of the things that people say are missing are there! They just didn't see it.
In times look this I see I still need to do better painfully clear.5 -
I hate it when people use like 7 "if" statements instead of like.. 2? And when they do not nest "if"s.
For ex. :
if(condition1 && condition2){
}
if(condition1 && condition3){
}
.....
" But I am writing it out longer to understand better! "
Yet it eventually stays that way with like 50 lines of "if"s..1 -
Did not understand why people posted so much on here till I had to argue with my "partner" product manager that SVG icons are better than pure CSS icons, and yes there is such thing as animated SVG, and no I'm not a designer to create fancy icons for you just because they "are actually code" you twat1

!rant
How about a feed where people can ask for help?
I know there are sites such as stack overflow for things like that, but I find devrant's community to be a lot more friendly and just better overall.
Also I believe it would be kinda funny if the questions would not be required to be 100% dev related.4 -
I fucking hate when people think they can do a better job not using a well tested library.
And then try justify why their code is better and quicker than using a library.1 -
Small rant for today: why in God's name do some people feel the need to ignore the conventions of the frameworks THEY chose to use for theyr projects, and start just throwing stuff randomly around the whole codebase?
ARRRGGHHHH...
Phew...all better now :)1 -
There are two kinds op people. People who like to help because they feel sorry for you, and people who want to help to proof themselves.
The second one is annoying as fuck. Even though i asked for help, it doesn’t mean you are better in it then me.
You should listen to what i have to say. Stuck up anti social asshole.7 -
Anyone else find they work better between the hours of say 10am - 2am rather than the "normal office hours" of 9am - 5pm?
The problem is if I start later then the people who I work with are so absorbed in their work that I don't receive a reply to my email.1 -
I hate people editing slack messages.
Here it goes...
1. I receive a slack message (notification sound while working)
After 5 mins of finishing my work...
2. I open slack to look at the message
3. The message says just a hyphen with an edited sign. Why tf you have to edit the message when you can delete it? Or better, don't send it in the first place.
Why people? Why?2 -
I hate interviews. I am not too keen on giving them and not too great at taking them, though I typically do well.
We are smart people, there has to be a better way than coding things on the fly... -
I'm working as a software intern and the room where I work is almost always quiet. And then there's some people who come in and talk, but at that point I don't mind because it's better than straight silence. Anyway, yeah2
-
I'm just wondering how many developers is tire of people asking them to build a complete custom site in WordPress. And when you tell them "hey Fucker it would be faster and work better if we just build this cms from scratch" but the client won't budge they want fucking WordPress no matter what...10
-
Fucking hell it pisses me off when you go to so much trouble to streamline processes, set up systems that improve workflow and solve issues, find better solutions and show how they make life easier... and people are like "yeah nah let's just do things the same old shitty way we've always done things".
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻5 -
I have lately seen a lot of people mentioning that functional programming is better than object oriented programming.
So far I have only experience in oop and I would really like to know some reasons why it is better.9 -
What browser does everyone use? I've been using Firefox and its pretty good mixed with DuckDuckGo I could ask for better, but people seem to love Chrome. What does everyone think should I try Chrome for a bit.40

Coding is not the solution to unemployment or gender inequality... This what the MF don't understand.... Until you create a better Sys and population is controlled and there is cultural evaluation. - you MF are just running a circus show.
Every MF want to jump into the bandwagon of cheap CSR - "hey we are empowering people by teaching people how to develop a website , aren't we good peopLE 😊"
Lol like programming is fucking open source, you don't need to teach people, anyone interested can learn it , and they are billion FREE RESOURCES out here for them to learn, so why not just fucking focus on doing something significant than clowning around "become a dev ".
Fuck havard, fuck Google fuck KMPG fuck the fucking dumb Government fuck youth empowerment📌4 -
How did pornhub pitch their idea to investors?
"...making the world a better place by enabling people watch porn faster and reliably" -
Thomas had never seen such bullshit before (Insert name of that guy, who thinks Apple is hyped, and needs better password resets).
Honestly, when people say Indians are shit devs and write shit code, I could not really relate to that. I am an Indian, and I see pretty well educated, telented devs around.
Now I know why everyone else feels so.
I am sorry for his doings, people like him are the reason everybody hates us22 -
Why do people hate jQuery so much? 30KB is basically nothing in times of modern bandwidth and for me CSS selectors are mich more readable than the Vanilla JS functions.
Im not judging and would be happy if someone explains it to me or shows better alternatives.4 -
Which version of Python are people working with these days? Is there enough support for Python 3.x to use that or is it better to stick with Python 2.7.x for the time being?6

Too many projects, too little time and didn't get a raise. So I now work on projects that people I like ask me to. Ignoring the other pm's while looking for a better job.1

What does Linux and web development have in common. New distros and framework popping up everyday.
What is wrong with people, creating distros and web framework for dumb reason. When they can contribute to to existing distro/framework to make it better.8 -
I've seen far worse people doing what I'm doing, applying terrible practices and still being valued af.
Even if I do smth wrong after doing all the research and alternatives' analysis I know I'll do a proper post-mortem RCA, document it and learn from it, as a result I'll make a better choice to fix the problem and I'll know better next time.
I think I'm alright compared to them. So I don't wory about being an impostor.
Learning by good examples is a good approach. Learning by bad ones might be even better. The "good ones" are yet to fail and be replaced by better (or worse) ones. The "bad ones" are already failing and you can learn WHY you should not be doing it like that and HOW should you do instead to solve the problem.
Learning from good examples only works well if you know the back-story, all the WHYs and HOWs. People usually don't :) -
Code review with some people is emotionally draining. How do you keep encouraging someone to get better without being a dick when the improvement isn't there?4
-
I just want a better life. A life where people can live freely. Where skill and talent is enough to make a living. A life where we don't have to be scared of the police.2
-
Some Devs need to be better about sharing info. Like, I don't want to play 20Qs just to learn how to configure a system I never used. You have job security, don't worry! Other people are allowed to know what ya know; you don't need to impress anyone!1
-
People rant about missing semicolon which can be easily solved by switching to a better IDE. And here I am working on a language in which statement terminates with Dot(.) Which is so easy to miss. And worst part is that I can't change IDE.1

Why people loves Java? It's because the maintenance or something in architectural level? I don't understand, because we have languages like Python with a better syntax and languages like C++ with a better optimization and speed of processing9

Is kotlin worth coding in? Or is plain Java better? There are many people here coding in kotlin what made you change to kotlin from Java or from anything else? Is there a specific reason? Speed? Stability? Anything? Is it worth using it instead of Java?9

Is is better to tell the interviewer that you are a solo developer in the current company? Or that you are a team of 2-3 people?
Just shower thoughts7 -
Ford vs Ferrari shows everything wrong with upper management. They are a bunch egoistic pricks in suits who have nothing better to do than play office politics and take credit for the hard work of people under them.
One of the best movie I have ever seen. Made me wanna smell some oil and grease.1 -
Everytime I scroll through here I see people complaining about JS and frameworks being made for it. Well think about it, would you rather have to use old buggy JavaScript or help the community and the language achieve better standards? Just look at ES6 and ways to write code and JavaScript really isn't that bad. It's just misunderstood.3
-
So a lot of people tell me Linux is way better than Windows. And I know it's all personal preference but I was thinking about switching to linux. What's everybodies opinion?16
-
People really have short term memories. It seems everyone has suddenly forgotten the nonexistent lack of privacy at Zuck’s platforms.
To be fair, I think competition is good for consumers and Musk has been doing a very terrible job of managing Twitter.
But not having most platforms of social communication controlled by one company would be better.5 -
I rarely donate money to charity, but I consider myself fairly charitable in other ways. For example, I rejected the 16th "billion dollar app idea" presented to me over the course of a few years, today. (Counting only ideas that come from semi rational people). I do believe I make the world a better place.
-
Microsoft bought Github so what ? It's not like github is the most important tool out there. If they break it we'll just move on to something else no problem just chill people. Give them the benefit of doubt maybe they'll make it even better.2

Some people say linux is better than windows because it's better suited for development work
Let's be honest: It's not linux, the tools just suck ass
And no I'm totally not frustrated with installing ocaml on windows 🤐14 -
When you get on devRant expecting to make yourself feel better with others' shittier lives as devs and instead see people posting jokes and happy stuff.1

Got an openai invite.
Funny thing it has been so long since I requested it, I no longer remember what I was gonna build.
I know some people who are better qualified and wanted access haven't been able to get access yet.
So, any suggestions?6 -
People are usually better known for something special in their social circles, like a habit, or something they like, or a phrase they often use, like their catchphrase...
As a developer, do you think you have like a code leitmotif? A singular habit or a certain algorithm you like to use?
For example, I'm very mad about string quotes, so I tend to use strictly ' unless it's better / necessary to use ", ` or something else.9 -
This last week I have been so excited about Artemis going around the moon. This is the kind of stuff that people need. Stop bickering about bullshit. There is a universe to explore!
I saw parts of the flyby today and it was really really cool. I hope NASA is getting incredible data from this. I cannot wait until we send people there again. Probably better to use robots, but going there in person is cool. -
Have you seen those comments which are better than the rants themselves ...
I see myself being forced to ++ the rant, just so people could see the comment :/1 -
I don't like Chrome because Windows 10 forces it to perform slowly so that edge can perform better & people can fucking use it.8

I play some ping pong and talk to other people about it.
Rubber duck is great but thinking human is a little better.3 -
Happy Diwali people 😤
Ive to work on my should've-been-a-day-off coz big meeting so y'all better celebrate in my stead 😤😤😤 -
The best coworker I've had always wanted to fix everything! And most times he did. But sometimes his fixes created more bugs. Needless to say his name is Paul Ness so it made it even better hearing people say "PNesswhat did you do now!?" , that never got old. 😂

Why do people keep inventing new object serialisations when there is already JSON and XML? Why do people think that a custom format and parser would be better than an industry standard and a parser that has years of development improvements? :-S
How would you teach / punish these people?2 -
I wonder if windows server could have made Task Manager a little better since I only have 30 people connected right now and in about 2 months I will have over a hundred...
Maybe they should group the tasks and you can expand them to see which users have it open, instead of having the tasks collapsed by users.3 -
The bigger the number of people smarter than me defines how much I like the company.
More is better.3 -
I feel like the better you are technically, the worse you'll fare career wise. I've seen it, people who are really good at software engineering rarely make much money. On the other hand, people who have a 'technical background', and go into management, do far better.
It's almost as the transferable skills from I.T. pay far better than the actual I.T. skills themselves. -
People like to argue what language is better, saner, safer, etc. The problem with these arguments is it all boils down to what the programmer does with it.
I said before, languages are our tools. A shoddy carpenter can build a rickety house even with the best tools.
Golang has been introduced as a rather nice language, with many people agreeing that it's solid. That said, Golang still does not prevent evil, ugly code.
The source for the image below is available here: https://play.golang.org/p/...6 -
How did you learn to think "like a programmer"?
I am starting to learn C++ and I am trying it out on exercism. I am really at the beggining but when I make it work after so much frustration(based on devrant posts I guess that's part of the job) I always see people having shorter/better/more effective codes which makes sense to me but I wouldn't thought of it that way.
Is there way to make such thinking better or does it simply come with practice ?6 -
I hope middle management feels some type of way when they learn that 70% of people want to leave their jobs right now. I hope all companies get what they deserve. I hope they all learn how to be better.5
-
People need to fucking shut up about this MacBook Pro port shit. They're moving all their ports to one unified port that has a standard interconnect that people have been wanting on Android phones and other machines since USB C was announced. Shut the fuck up and notice that it's changing for the better.12
-
I mean. People love Docker and Kubernetes? Really? I mean, I agree it's good. I'm just wishing if people demanded for better and simple software and not complicated stuff. Idk10
-
The biggest things I’ve probably learned working on side projects are patience and planning. Side projects are a great place to hone your skills of negotiation with other people, but I’ve personally learned a great deal about the process of architecture, simply by doing side projects where I’ve experienced scoping and tooling problems later on. Being patient lends itself to getting better at planning. Working with others on side projects has given me insight into “when to hold em and when to fold em”...and again, this patience education has often helped me be a better planner for a multitude of tasks.

damn berlin sucks, the public transport is not very comfortable, people are gloomy and sometimes even snobby, the service is not the best and shopping sucks because there are not much choices and prices are not justified. prague was much better.2 -
There's a special place in hell for the people responsible for PC screen menus. I'm sure they all just hate other people, this shit can only be intentional.
Are expensive screens better in that regard or do they all have this UX clusterfuck that's processed by a microchip Foxconn grabbed from their garbage can?10 -
No we don't actually need to have a meeting about this because your architectural opinions rely on medium articles written by unemployed people pretending that these competing technologies are relevant. All you have to do is take an existing piece of code and rewrite it how you'd like to, and show everyone that it's better5
-
So the guy who sits next to me in my class uses white theme for his IDE.
Me: So, you use white theme.
Him: Yea, I like it. So much better than darker ones. Don't know why people like it. Does it bothers you too?
Me: Pfft, no!
Me inside:7 -
I've decided that I want to make a REST API using Flask/Python. I've researched it for a few days, but can't seem to find anything close to a definitive answer: How should I structure the application?
I've found a lot of people talking about using Blueprints, and I'm leaning towards that, but I'm wondering if there aren't "better" frameworks for building a REST API? What do people here recommend that I look into?7 -
i cant understand some people
Why use atom for python development while we have pycharm?
is it about price?
community edition is free and 100 times better than atom.
what is wrong with you?16 -
I wish gamedevs put more focus on the cheating problem in multiplayer games.
When you have to manually ban people in your esports minor qualifier there is something wrong...
I need to find a better game :(
Or start a cheat program company for the easy money but I doubt it's legal.7 -
Most humbling thing for me us talking to people who have more experience than me about a problem I have. It's kind of uncomfortable at first knowing you're not that good compared to these guys, but eventually you just realize they were where you were once, asking people better than you for help.
-
Working at a startup with a small (~4-6) person engineering team usually means those few people are the most in tune with the software. This then usually leads to an onslaught of people who should know better asking devs stupid questions about the software or relying on the devs to do their jobs for them.
Have you encountered these types of situations before? How were they resolved?2 -
I hate people who own crypto and think they're some futurist tech elite. You don't know how the price will fluctuate in the future so stop thinking you're some goddamn fucking wizard. Just because you know the very basics of how a blockchain works or simple economics, doesn't mean you're better than those who don't own crypto.1
-
Fucking hate explaining and convincing people why Linux is better.. The least the can do is give it a shot and experience themselves.20

Machine learning. People started picking up ml and bragging about machine learning. Sure it’s an obvious industry that is going to pick up, but thousands of people picking up the same subject is going to make the industry stale and people are going to find better alternatives and won’t be as successful as some think imo (I could be wrong, don’t attack me).3
-
I swear business people are so stupid. They take us off of a real priority programming project and then tell us to stop and send emails to gather reporting data.
I am a developer...not an email jockey. Get someone with a business degree and nothing better to do to do this shit. -
Serious question. And apologize if I sound stupid.
Why do people, especially here on devRant brag about Arch Linux?
What is so special about this OS?
What does this OS do better than Ubuntu, Debian, Kali Linux, Fedora etc?11 -
Any of you guys (especially German people) know of this online bank N26? It looks pretty cool and I was thinking of getting another bank account for a better money management plan. Anyone's used it before/knows it's safe/good?8

Everytime I am in some shopping centre and google maps asks me to add a photo of it because these photos are popular a thought crosses my mind: don't people have anything better to do with their lives!? For fuck's sake.

I get the feeling that the only reason people get macs is because windows is horrible now, I mean I’ve heard there’s better editing tools and all but surely they don’t give a huge advantage over editing tools for windows right?26

People who specifically attribute all value to people making money are the core problem
So many infant raping pieces of human trash make money
Our system could just work at last and there could be a million things being done better or being finished22 -
If you do not push something (language, education, people, cars, design, medicine ...etc etc) how the hell do you expect to mature, surpass expectations and become better. Java didn't start off as good or as bad as it is today. It was through testing, abuse, use and pushing it harder do more and more amazing things that it wasn't built for. PHP has changed alot since I started using and it's through people efforts that it gets better. Before the javascript wave came it was a nuisance to use and sucked as most browsers had it switched off by default but it's become more secure, fluent and able to do more amazing things and people are loving it right now.
I really wish people would stop with half arsed and uneducated comments.1 -
Is there a collective of people who just make things out of the goodness of their heart for the better of the society??14

i was wondering Is it true when people do drugs they code alot better?
All where I see this concept.6 -
I see a lot of people here coding using terminal editors like vim. Isn’t it better to use an IDE rather than vim? How do people in the industry do it?3

We need to create a completely software driven music band. Use AI to learn what people like and adjust over time. So the music becomes "better" as more input is received. It should be complete with VR musicians and VR stages and concerts.
The band name would be: Zero Day1 -
why can't people just fucking figure shit out on their own or better yet ask people besides me to help them

I blurred out the ip in the image for obvious reasons, but I did debate leaving it unblurred just to see what would happen for about 5 minutes3 -

I wish I have a better academic year with great professors and wonderful coursework so I don't have to rant as much,

Happy new year, people. -
The reason Google page loads are so fast is because their research showed people will use something less frequently if it takes a long time to load.
I'm starting to understand that better now as my email fills up with Pocket, Quora subscription newsletters. Their pages take too long to load on 2G (20KB/s, I'm traveling internationally) -
Why the fuck people are exclusive based on their ego?
They think they are smarter and better than others but don't really act like it. How fucking ironic.
Go fuck yourself with your coolness.2 -
You know, one thing that really puzzels me is that people are willing to use WinRar despite there being plenty of better alternatives (*cough*7-Zip*cough*) that doesn't slap an activation notice in your face every fucking time.4

They should have made a song "but first let me take a backup", instead of selfie. This would have made the world a better place and a better life for many people like me :(

If I don't respond on messages maybe I'm fucking busy. Sometimes its really better to just shutdown my.phone so i can fully focus on work.
Those are text messages through WhatsApp by the way, and people can actually see I haven't read their messages yet2 -
Dear MyISAM,
please die a painful and horrible death already, you living corpse of the times long gone. You're taking way too long.
Thank you,

Nothing beats when you move into a new team and your old team message you all the time for those little things they could Google... Did people really think I was that smart??? Maybe some people are better at googling than others...

Terrible, bad, mediocre, good, great:
so, 60% of the people in the workforce aren’t even “good” at their job.
If you just better than the bottom 20%, you should be fine. Chin up!7 -
I really wish i had the opportunity to work at larger companies tht move the industry (facebook, twitter, google, amazon). Just to experiancr even as an intern regardless of what people say negative or positive. Just work with brilliant minds and this will make me see and experiance things and make me a better developer but mainly be myself and a better person.2

Which is better:
1. Developers who develop software writing documentation for the software they developed
2. Marketing people who market stuff writing documentation for the software the developers developed1 -
I used to do a job where I helped older people with their computer issues and of my customers once used an actual magnifier to view websites their smaller letters. Both logical but also hilarious, the customer probably didnt know any better!2

Meeting time; issue. People have been leaving at an alarming rate. New boss pulls us into a meeting. We are the people that do the most every day to the point we are tired.
Boss: why do you think we are having issues with attrition?
Me: because we are tired of being told we are doing great work and then being treated like we sit around with are thumbs up are ass.
Boss: I... ummm
Me: yeah it's bad, also I quit.
Point is, I am now making more money, doing better work, in a better place. Point is, don't quit out right, but don't be afraid to look for a better place and take the time to interview.2 -
So many people on devRant rave about iPhones because of the better security and privacy, but the new iPhone X starts at a whopping $1000! Sure, you don't have to get the X, but that's what everybody wants.
You'll say "well, I'm willing to pay more if it means better security because that's just the way it is." It doesn't have to be. It would be much more beneficial to actually fight and take a stand for better security and more privacy than just put up with outrageous prices.1 -
Why devRant is not open source?
I know that it has a Github issue tracker with a awful amount issues.
Wouldn't it be better if people could work on the platform to improve it since most of the devRant users are developers.
(Just a random thought i had)11 -
To know what people are thinking to better understand them, their reasoning and motives.
Quite a lot of the time facades are put in place and while i already see through them, would like to know what is really going on. -
Fuck!
The activity tab on Instagram has gone now..
That feature was really useful in understanding the people better - their quirks, their secret desires etc.
It helped me learn people without really talking to them at all..
So disappointed 😑4 -
Very vague and large question but: How do you become better in terms of software development / engineering?
For context my current job is pretty good but sometimes it lacks challenges, I’m interested in how people become better out of the work scope I guess.7 -
Dumb as a rock...
Pet rocks...
Why people so dumb to be dumb as a rock and have pet rocks?
Yet people have computers which basically have a math rock that runs the system. People think computers are smart so they defer to things like online data and ai systems. As if the computer somehow "knows" better. The R2D2 effect. Fancy magic 8 balls.
Society is dumber than a rock. Seems to be getting dumber too. The irony is that people who had pet rocks also went outside and touched grass.4 -
Is anybody else bothered by Slack? The way they handle account management and channels bothers me. It solved a problem that didn't exist, and now it has become this ecosystem so many people/organizations are over reliant on.
I feel like AIM had better features in the early 00's.1 -

How to get cheap engagement for your shitty tech website:
- write an article about Android vs iOS (even better if you state that one is better than the other justifying that with very vague points)
- share it on Facebook where hordes of people with their brain stuck in early teenage years will fiercely fight for their mobile platform of choice
- profit! -
Has anyone heard of anbox? It's something that they say could run android apps on Ubuntu. Is it worth using? Or am I better off with an android vm? If vm which android version do you people recommend?2

I think it was Mike Rugnetta (from pbs idea channel on YouTube) who once tweeted "worse weekends have happened to better people" or something to that effect.
Word. -
I fucking hate people who keep changing little things when the big things don't change for the better to annoy me !

I see people working with Atom. I assume none of them are dealing with even moderately large files. Codepen has better performance.6

the mistake people keep making when they're happy about some new tech and its possibilities is that they keep forgetting we are being ruled, and the tech is being controlled and monopolized, by a cult of megalomaniacal, narcissistic, powerhungry, moneyhungry, ideologically fundamentalist control freak lizards who give exactly ZERO shits about people, or the quality of their products, or some vision/ambition of making things better for people/humanity.
you think "vr metaverse", and you imagine Oasis because you think it's being made by James Halliday, while, in reality it's being made by a team of Cthulhus so it would be closer to reality if you imagined the people pods that ensure your lifetime connection to The Matrix.1 -
Working as a designer and developer helping people make their own ideas come true, I worked on a lot of projects and it's depressing seeing people excited about their ideas which are shitty as fuck and wasting their money on them, at the same time I can't tell them that. It would've been better for everyone if these ideas worked out, but these are shitty Ideas and I can't tell them that :D

That I don’t communicate well enough in English.
I’ve been working with teams that only speak English for a couple of years now, but I don’t feel that my conversation level is quite there yet. I’ve been getting better at it by, chatting with teammates, making notes before meetings and organizing my thoughts, but I’d like to get even better to improve myself and be more useful to my team when the time comes to deal with a complex bug that involves many people to solve.3 -
Belts are nice and all, but I've always found them to be particularly unfriendly towards laptops.
Buttons aren't much better, which I try to explain to people, but for some reason I still get strange looks when I go bottomless in the public library.

For a small team (<= 7 people) working on a self-managed Gitlab instance ('Starter' subscription), is it better if each user keeps a fork of the project they work on (working on other branch than master) or have everybody work on the same fork (still, different branches)?
Also, squash commits on branch merging, yes/no and why?4 -
Why the hate on JS? This isn't me trying to start some dumb war on what is better. I just genuinely would like to know why people specifically hate it.12
-
Its hard to manage people in a development team if someone is behind and not willing to learn and being a happy go lucky programmer with someone helping cleaning up his codes 😭 better solution is to rolloff this resource 😈2

Apparently the standard "pack" of applicants for a job is at least 100 people, how else can you only be in the top "2%"? If there's only 2 applicants, your fingers (typing skills?) are in the top 2%, and the rest is in the upper 48.
All of that just to say it would have been better worded as 2 in 100 people than 2% =).

To most non-dev people, being hit with error after error when fixing one small problem out of a much bigger collection of problems would probably be infuriating.
To me, it's a huge loop of:
for(var failsAtLine = 1; failsAtLine < lines.length; failsAtLine++;) {
changeSomething();
runTest();
readErrors();
cry();
comtemplateMeaningOfLife();
}
openChampagne();
Would help if deployer.org had better documentation and bigger support community. -

i have no idea what im doing
javascript, jsx, typescript, react have some of the ugliest and redundant syntax i have ever seen
what are people's favorite reference material for them
do people recommend the official documentation, was surprised react looked better than expected for its docs6 -
When people use my life as a basis to judge that theirs is better, should I be proud of it, or feel sad about it 😅😅6
-
@dfox & @trogus
Since there are less people around can we lower the requirements for the free stress ball back to 100++?
I know I can just buy one but earning one is so much better 😁4 -
I'm a 2nd year software development student in college and I'm looking for a new laptop and I thought who'd be better to help me than the fine people at Dev rant. My budget is 700 euro1
-
People complaining about your life on DevRant. If your life is better than mine then you should not complain 😠🧂18

I can't be the only person who feel that public/online education courses for programming is terrible. As far as I've seen it just teaches people bad practices. You're better off reading on your own.7
-
People should do a better job hiding what they are around me. This includes doing something different instead of being goddamn ants.6

I know how many people hate systemd. I started reading about it a week ago and I am enjoying it. Seems a much better alternative to previous things.
Is there something bad I should know about...2 -
Does anyone know how Go, the programming language is working?
People likes it, is it useful, is it good or there are better alternatives?
Would like to know the opinions of those who know about it :]7 -
Being black....It's workin' twice as hard as the people you know you're better than
'Cause you need to do double what they do so you can level them.1 -
The thought process that goes into developing software. I mean, the things that go through our minds as we try to write the code for the problem, and how we draw parallels from past experiences or similar things done in a different programming language. This, I feel makes us better at problem solving and consequently, better programmers and people.1

Mexico just got for a big earthquake and people is organizing a lots of ways to help.
> Some guys started a webpage and they are adding useful information and data for the people. They create a repo on GitHub to improve information.
> Mexican devs start discussing which technology is better for solving imaginary problems about escalate the servers, concurrency, creating a CMS, creating a public API, tokens for publishing the API... Instead of using something quick like firebase or some Trello to just publish info.1 -
Do people really use django's included admin interface? It's not even responsive; you're better off making your own if you're dealing with a big project.1
-
Irony
Even the black folks when faced with the problem.of wanting a better life for themselves apparently embraced the mindset of the fucking confederacy in a scenario where the untenable system or seemingly so of economics we embrace as a globe turned out not to work
They just tried to make more people like they were to keep themselves better off

HP
I really like their laptops, or i used to. My HP lappy has a realtek WiFi card and realtek doesn't provide support for Linux. I think I also hate realtek. Furthermore, my laptop starts throttling because of dust being collected. Some people that I know have older Dell laptops that work better than mine1 -
People gets confused on how comes I get better results then them in search. They always blame since I'm a programmer1

Tired of disputes with colleagues about which text editor is better: VS Code, Atom, Notepad++, Sublime Text... I just installed EMACS and thus not be part of any group of fanboys. When will people learn that those are just tools?1

I think the most people who are saying remote increased efficiency is hiding the fact their total job output has dropped. They can hide when they are not working and not everydev job is stimulating, so you can bullshit your way with increased efficiency. Some, like web dev, is brain damaging for example.
Tldr: for most of the people, job output drops because of lack of oversight. A few examples of better remote worker won’t change the fact.13 -
Hey everyone!
I'm thinking of building an open-source React Native app for DevRant just as a fun project. I came across an unofficial API documentation and also a wrapper.
https://devrant-docs.github.io/
https://github.com/danillouz/...
If anyone has used these, kindly let me know your experience and which one is better.
PS: I have no intention to publish or earn money from this project. Anyone who is interested can jump into the project and help in making it better. If enough people want to use it, I can compile an apk/ipa for people to download later on.devrant react native devrant app open source community project community app github android devrant api ios -
Building custom software for a State project and there's nothing better than dealing with the bureaucracy of emailing 1500 people only for them to email 1200 people when if you could just sit down with one of their programmers the issue would be solved in 20 minutes.

A few days ago, our latin teacher asked the ICT coördinator to borrow the poor camera of the school to record the lesson. She knows that I am the computerfreak of the class so she gives me the camera and she explanes me how to use it like I don’t fucking know how to use it. She said me that she didn’t know how much space there is left on the SD-Card and so the camera could stop filming. I started up the camera and the first thing that I saw: 27’22”, such a stupid bitch. We returned the camera and said: You could see on the display how many minutes there were left. She seemed pretty ashamed, she ignored us and walked further.7

They can have the comp once a new one is purchased
Remember there was a decent paying job these people stole. And he took the comp that was purchased. So the same or better and they can make their own lives and photos5 -
Today was the first time I realy used wordpress...
FUUUUCKING wp, the editor is nofucking shit better than ms notepad! How is it that so many people are using it and actually like it?! fuuuck....
What alternatives do you use for your homepages? I personaly prefer bolt.ch1 -
I know my development skills are getting better because I am having more people pitch me ideas....to many ideas...1

Been building a Shopify app for 2 months now. Every time I look at the code, Im adding more feature. Fuck. At this rate I'll never have people telling me how shit of an app this is to make it better.

I wanted my MySpace and Xanga to look better and function better than everyone else's.
I created a very basic directory on my xanga linking people's real names to their respective xanga for my group of friends. I started getting requests to add people to my directory. All my friends would go to my xanga first so they could easily find our friend's xangas.
I created social networking.
lol jk.
But it felt good knowing that I made the Internet a bit easier to use. -
Time to complain about "Just do X". Often nerds ask broad, open-ended questions, and I see people giving lazy, low effort solutions. As a lazy, open guy, I sympathize. I just wish people gave better "just" answers. How about a few levels of abstraction above "doing" something next time! Tell someone to "just read this", or "just learn about this" instead! Please pass this on to your neighbor.

I continue to firmly believe that psychological abuse can in the long run create incredibly strong and confident people, that those who become depressed as a result of being abused simply haven't developed the ability to use everything for the better, and that bullying can encourage the psychologically-abused to use everything for the better.1

Question for the crypto users here:
Is paying someone/getting paid via a crypto transaction better than getting paid through Wire/Bank transfer, where you're dealing with overseas payments?
Do you recommend people having a crypto wallet so they can get paid overseas easily?1 -
A news/article/blog site and forum revolving around social issues where in addition to reading articles people can ask questions that are sensitive judgment free and get answers.
The aim is to slowly make the world a better more tolerant place8 -
you know supposedly the life of a hunter gatherer was easier on the human body than that of a farmer.
i could kind of see that in a way.
we're built to move around, i don't know about the being out in the sun all day part though.
anyway I was thinking. is this bs better or worse ? it would a be a terrible letdown to work as a warehouse guy the rest of my life and land is expensive right now and people are nuts.
the latter especially, however there are better ways of organizing society.
for example.
if i had to work in a backbreaking job for several years i'd want to shoot myself or a crap job that was sort of grimey.
but making those jobs as livable as possible and moving everyone through them on a schedule.
that is doable for most people.
but if you say work in construction for 40 years your knees back and face are bye bye.
there are better ways of conducting the day to day business of our cuntry. -
Meta made Horizons World open to all people that have Occulus.
I don't but watching a YouTube video all I can think is that the avatars and world look like the Wii one years ago... And well no better then mobile.
So would be better if they just used the anime art like Genshin Impact or Breath of the Wild...4 -
Not gonna mention the better world part or what would make it
But would say a nice start is to not be living in a poisoned version of earlier events where people are crazy stupid and gradually disappearing and being replaced5 -
Leftists think they will get to a better world by banning everything they deem will fuel hatred.
You can see the spammers trying to prevent a discussion by spewing bile and hatred themselves (LOL) and spam in the comment section.
They hate successful people and want to knock them down and make the world a boring place. Goddamn evil people!9
