PM: You know that screen that pops up at the start of the app asking for permission to access health data?
Me: Yeah the iOS HealthKit permission screen. What about it?
PM: Can you take that out. I don't think people are going to agree to it. I want people to use the app.
Me: Well we can't do that, apple says if we want to use HealthKit we have to ask for permission. We shouldn't be touching that data without permission anyway.
PM: Oh no permission is fine I get that, but is it not implied by downloading the app, its clearly a health app. I really don't want people to download it and then uninstall it because they don't like this.
Me: Not really, not everyone will know what data is needed, some of it might be sensitive to them.
PM: Nah I don't buy into that. I asked 5 of my friends on the golf course at the weekend and 3 of them said they wouldn't agree to it, thats 60% of our user base, we can't have that.
Me: ... ok, well I don't agree that your 5 friends is a fair sample to judge the whole world by, either way we have no choice.
Pm: No this isn't going to fly, can we not build our own HealthKit that doesn't have this kind of permission screen? Maybe we could start our own, and invite our partners to use it?
Me: ... no
Pm: why not? We'll have legal draw up something we put in the terms and conditions.
Me: ... it will take months to build for all the different types of devices we have, if they even let us get access to them, and then we will have a different standard to everyone else.
Pm: ... no your not seeing the big picture, i'll run the idea up the ladder.
**It was approved up the ladder, and subsequently cancelled when they realised the scale of the work involved which is both a "thank god" and a "wtf" moment**7 -
1. I agree to work with you on your startup idea because i believe in you.
2. I am the solo developer doing both the mobile apps, website, database and server side.
3.You call me shouting and complaining that i am too slow.
4. sudo rm -rf ~/your_project5 -
Coding essentially is an infinite loop of:
1) wtf
2) ah yea
Add sprinkles of "that should be easy" and "why did i agree on this"6 -
I took a programming class this semester in which a have to write code on paper, and the more I write, the more I agree. I give you my word-
I will ***never--- ever--- write code on paper again***14 -
Sometimes the best "bug" are the troll posts, although personally I agree with it (even though a separate byte for both \r and \n make sense to keep for other purposes).7

USER: I can't see any data in the page...!
ME: ok, I'll do a check
ME: API calls get no data back. Boss, did you change anything and put it in production?
BOSS: Absolutely not, I just modified the name of what was the "Family" parameter in "Type".
ME: Seems legit. Totally agree. I'm going to lunch. Can you check in the meanwhile why calling the API with "Family" does return nothing? Thanks.3 -
Guys, I've been thinking.
When I get married I'm gonna make my partner agree to terms of service and my privacy policy instead of the lame wedding vows 😛
Instead of 'I do', it'll be 'I agree'.
Should also probably make him sign an NDA incase things go south.
Edit:
Also, probably a code of bathroom conduct. (I just remembered that football while peeing rant)31 -
!dev related but is a rant
I don't think that either Mark Zuckerberg nor Elon Musk are experts on AI but I'd agree more with Musk than Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg made a website, that's not rocket science.
Musk made a reusable rocket, that is rocket science.10 -
Sometimes I want to go back in time and slap myself when I say "yeah that shouldn't be too difficult" to a client.4

I don't care if you're a friend, acquaintance, or we fucking knew each other in high school!
If I fucking agree to do some free work for you, feel fucking happy about it! Don't fucking ask for more work or demand work or give me fucking deadlines just because you know me!
I'm doing you a fucking favor! Do you want me to send you the fucking invoice? I don't care if you're on a budget, I agreed to help you out, but don't you dare fucking cross the line!12 -
This is why you DONT deploy in a Friday!
Now can we all agree to stop disagreeing!

Oh, typo, that should've been: never gonna give a fuck!
No, seriously, I couldn't care less.48 -
meeting a client for small web project, we did not agree price of project soo I left...next week I saw him on tv, he was arrested as a pedophile6

Got my front end friend (also my irl best friend) to agree on me setting up a vm/vps on one of my dedi's with a sub domain so he can learn to work with servers.
He agreed on me leaving root access for myself in case he couldn't figure something out and I (a Linux server engineer myself) would have to help him out.
He seemed so excited, will set this up when I get home 😊6 -
Tldr : In my country, there is always a middleman .It is so rare to work for end client directly and it is very common to be fuck over by them, because they want milk you out as much as possible
Job description : Salary range from X to Y
Me : I expect 90% of Y $
HR : if you pass technical examination we can agree on this amount.
*Technical interview*
All correct answers, perfect match with stack etc.
HR calling next day:
HR: Great job on interview, but you need to lower your financial expectation to X (around 50% of Y)
Me: Why? We have spoken the other day and you said there would be no problem with the money. I nailed the interview, I don't understand why I should agree to lower wage.
HR: I know I know, but right now we cannot give more. Maybe later
Me: I am sorry, but I feel kinda cheated. For me this is red flag since I don't know what I can expect later if you are not sincere from the beginning. I won't take your offer, goodbye.9 -
Some clients take this too literally, but in general I would agree! ☺️

Somehow I finished the call but God damn it took some energy and self control not to completely lose my shit. His tone was also very denigrating (he just didn't agree on something which was his fucking problem)
Fuck him.6 -
While installing Windows 10:
Do you want to enable Cortana?
By enabling Cortana, you agree to share your voice input, typing history, search history, your location...
I think they should just minify this to: you agree to share your life with us.6 -
Arguing with a woman is like reading the Software License Agreement. In the end, you ignore everything and click "I agree".

Interviewer: So here are the technical tests. You have 20min.
Me: We agree I can use the internet?
Interviewer: No, sorry.
Me: Good, I'll make you pen&paper websites then. Seriously!?4 -
Fingerprint sensor is insecure

Fine I agree....but how secure is the face ID ??

I get really tired of people shitting on php and getting greated with immediate laughter when I say I work as a full stack LEMP/LAMP dev. I work just as hard as you (ruby/python/node devs) do and feel like I make some pretty cool shit.
Why can't we all just agree we do great things with our tools and while I may use a different hammer than you, we still use the same nails!!!19 -
Once had a classmate schedule a meeting with me to "go over something" for a project we had together. (Not a CS class, but it was a general education class.)
I agree, make time on my schedule for this meeting.
I get there and they say "Yo I just wanted to let you use my flash drive so you could make some changes to the PowerPoint I started last night. Just get it back to me a few days before the project is due and we'll look over it together."
You asshole. Go fuck yourself.
This lesson taught me to ask what meetings are about in order to prevent this bullshit2 -
Do you agree to this rule given by my company ?
"Employees are not allowed to create any sort of library for any language after or during working hours, whether for personal or company projects. As they might somehow expose companies code to the open-source world."
Personally, I created quite much (not that much) of library , I created for fun, today I was told to delete ALL , so those who use my package , Im sorry :(73 -
Fuck those clients which are surprised when they get an invoice when they ask you to do something for them.
I think it's as simple as:
- you know my hourly rate
- you ask me to do some work for you
- I give you an estimation
- you agree with the estimation
- I get the job done and show it to you
- you accept the edits/solutions
- I send you an invoice with less hours than estimated
- you agree with the invoice and pay
It seems that every step is going well, except the last one...
Well... fuck you too.13 -
thanks to @stuxnet i have to proudly say, that i have went outside and after 21 years, asked a girl for her number in real life, of course got rejected, this probably sounds pathetic as fuck to all of you, which i do agree, but because of the hell I've gone through and blood I've left behind out of struggle the life caused me, i have finally gathered bravery to take a risk and do it, yes i technically haven't achieved anything but i have finally tried at least once and this is the furthest I've gone with girls in real life... what a fucking relief... i think its gonna be much easier now that i finally broke the ice...8

I wrote this blog post entirely on my phone through doing an SSH on my home server. Why, you ask, well because I don't have my laptop and I am hella bored. Stupid, you say, well I agree.

!rant
I got a confession to make...
Sometimes when I find a rant interesting, agree with it, in general, have a positive reaction to it, I forget to ++ it...
Sometimes I even comment and don't ++ the rant or comment that I've seen...
I'm sorry to everyone who I didn't ++ and deserved it.8 -
Currently written on the conference room whiteboard:
People who enjoy meetings should not be in charge of anything.

By the way I really much agree on both rants. People asking questions that they not even once typed into Google. Disturbing my workflow every 5 minutes...1 -
I HATE when a request for a change or a new feature comes like a bug feedback, as if it's your fault

"If you want to be a good developer then be good at one programming language." - I don't know why but I do not agree with this.7

so... i'll probably be joining my first job in 17 days.
My profile is *supposed to be* devops engineer (not that i know much about it, they just felt i was better suited for it than java programming (and i do agree)), although, apparently, the offer letter states java engineer and i talked to them about it, they said that it's a standard template but u are chosen for devops only. i hope that is true.
mostly i feel really upset that college will be over, but i am kinda excited about the job too.
wish me luck guys 😅😅😅13 -
We were already working overtime all Saturday. Boss came in the evening to demand some ridiculous shit. Me and senior dev agree it's ridiculous. It's already 1 am Sunday. I already explained to him why it doesn't make sense so he suggest more changes that doesn't even solve his initial problem. He asks me if I can do it by Monday morning. I can't. He suggested way too many breaking changes that I don't even agree with and I have to sleep like a normal human being.
I shit you not, he says he will do it himself. This guy barely even codes and has never seen a single line of code for this project. I didn't stop him. I went home and slept.
End of rant.8 -
Not really a recruiter but at interview at one place I was given a printed code example and told that there was 8 bugs and that I shield treat it like a code review.
I found 16 bugs and 4 bad practices and explained them all to the director of software engineering and team lead (that set the test), they agree that I was correct; the director turned to the team lead and said ... Are you are your a senior
I tried not to laugh lol1 -
My coworkers are all working remotely because they're hungover, and all shocked I'm in the office today.
You think a night of drinking and 4 hours of sleep is enough to hold me down? Please. If I'm hungover enough to not go to work it means I'm probably in the hospital lol.
That being said, I have discovered that scotch does not agree with my stomach, so I'm not having the best time. At least I'm here though!9 -
Scrum Master: Let's estimate the task. Chose your estimations individually, then we will reveal at the same time and discuss

Product Owner: I don't agree, this should be a 1 or 2.
Dev Team Lead: Agreed, this is why I chose 2. Let's vote again.
- All votes now are 1s or 2s
Good fucking job 🤨11 -

Guys, can we just not shorten links when pasting them here e.g. using bitly?
No idea what’s behind it.
I’m paranoid enough to copy paste every link before using it to see if the shown link was the actual link or just a cover. But with bitly I have to go to that page without knowing it’s target before I get there..
Hope most of you agree with me.6 -

I can understand (to a point) when non-devs use meaningless tech "buzzwords", but please, as developers, can we just agree not to spout nonsense?!
"Electron is so amazing, it's such a lightweight framework!"
"Django is incredible, it's so agile!"
Agile is a family of development methodologies, and Electron is about as heavyweight as a desktop application can possibly get...10 -
So my boss thinks that it takes maximum of two days to create a website in WordPress.
I agree with that, but what about the million requirements of the client and you about the theme? and custom dashboards?
PS: Only one developer will work on one website!6 -
Everyone complains that a certain developer's code is not up to standard and when they have to take over his project the lack of code quality is really slowing them down.
I look at code, agree it is poor quality and put together a learning plan for said developer.
Also look at who approved every pull request which allowed bad code into our codebase. Same developers as those complaining it's no good. You had your chance to stop it!9 -
Manager: Dev, you will submit to my leadership and surrender all common sense to agree with what I say or face consequences.

Introduction to graphics
Lecturer says "this is a very practical course. In fact I think we should have a practical exam"
All students agree. He would sort out that matter.
Meanwhile he taught us how to making shapes in java, then a house, then a game...
And the exam was for us to make a building where a user can walk through the building using the arrow keys...
What fun we had. We got out marks...and everybody did well!!!!1 -
This rant is aimed towards those who hate on JavaScript developers and the JS language:
Dear Asshole,
I am a JavaScript developer by choice.
I think JavaScript is great.
I agree that JavaScript have some bad sides to it, but I believe that the community is driving good change to the ecosystem.
I appreciate other models of other languages.
I do not include 3rd party NPM modules without checking their source and credibility.
I will not use a framework (i.e. react, Vue, Anguler) if it's not needed.
And finally:
I can do any software engineering tasks a software engineer is supposed to do.
Kind regards,
Nedo-the-angry.18 -
Why The Fuck do you always have to say "Yes"?
I'm asking for a goddamn opinion. Give me an opinion.
But no, everything I say must be fucking gold 'cause it's always "yes", "you're right", "good idea", "I agree".
It's irritating as hell. It's "yes" even when I say something stupid on purpose.
Learn to say no, for fuck's sake.12 -
Boss: "Sooo.... How long will it take?"
Me: "Maybe we should agree on some processes and specify your wishes for the new feature first?"
Boss: "Yeah you're right.... But what do you think? Will you get it done til $deadline?"
...
Why am I even trying? Who needs project management anyway?4 -
I am a woman with multiple years of experience in the coding industry , while in most of my jobs I have been the only woman in the team and I do agree there is a need for more women in the coding industry , however I really do believe workshops like shecodes are an absolute scam , the inclusiveness to bridge the gender divide in tech needs to start from the employers , all resources to learn to code are completely gender neutral and unbiased. I also find it quite hypocritical that shecodes was founded by a man and is taught by a man . Can anyone please shine some different opinions about this or does anyone else believe a similar thing ?32

This app allows you view the json file your computer upload to Microsoft.
But to open it, you have to join the insider program and agree to upload more private data.
To know what data Microsoft spying on me, I have to agree to let Microsoft spying me willingly.
What kind the logic is that?😤15 -
Not an enemy yet, but I’ve just debated with a senior dev that said stored procedure is faster, safer, and works better than entity framework
I agree with faster (only a bit) but the rest is just bs23 -

YOU SISTERFUCKING ASSHOLES!
WELL... I FUCKING CLICKED "AGREE" AND WHEN I FINALLY FOUND THE PRIVACY CENTER (LOL) THE SAME FUCKING POP-UP DID APPEAR!

PM: There are bugs in the code.
ME: There are bugs, because you asked me to cut corners. *fu#k you* *wtf moment*4 -
My supervisor's flaky attitude is annoying the shit out of me.
Mate, why would you agree to hire me for the project I wanted to do (and get me to move halfway across the planet) and then tell another colleague that I'm focusing too much on my project and they should give me their extra work?
Like, I get it but I don't get it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯6 -
I didn't... Some of y'all might argue I'm not even a proper dev.. and I'd agree..
I'm fixing bugz & implementing a thing or two.. but all within how project was done.. you give me a blank project, I'd probably spend days reading up on how to do it properly and still couldn't decide what sounds good to me.7 -

Yes, I agree with your comparison very very much.

Can we agree to from now on do all our sylesheets like this?
Honestly. It takes a bit of work organizing everything but bloody hell is it easy to use.

Yo...wtf
A node package, event-stream. Was infected. Basically, the exploit seems to steal data from mining cryptocurrencies. What was amazing was the github repo owner's attitude about it. I would normally agree with it not being his issue anymore if it weren't because:
1. The pendejo did not archive the repo to indicate that he is free of fault and not his anymore.
2. You can't just entrust a fucking software lib to any pendejo that asks.
3. Eat a dick nigga

Why do theoretical computer science and maths lectures mostly start at 8 am. I am a nocturnal creature to me is like having to wake up at 3 am for others. There are other kinds of people that like to get up early so here is a suggestion: Why don't we agree that all lectures start at 11:00 earliest? It is a good time in the day for a lot of people and I would have the time to inject myself with some Mate tea.8

Fuck you apple, and fuck your god damn shitty documentation.
Working with NFC enabled passes, their documentation says "payload max is 64 bytes"
What they ACTUALLY fucking mean is 64 ascii characters.
Also, the way they handle date time formats is fucked. They say they support W3C formats (iso) but what they actually mean is, they support a half assed version of a subset of it.
I told their chief engineer over a phone call and his response;
"I agree, our documentation is lacking"... HOW ABOUT YOU FUCKING UPDATE IT!
Also, how they handle json is just bad.7 -
Breaking news!
An anomaly in human communications was discovered!! It appears that when a person asks a tech oriented friend "can you help me with my computer?" And receives a positive response, what he actually hears is "yes, I agree to be your slave for any technical issue you have from now and until the end of time"!
Scientists are investigating...2 -

Just learned my company says it owns everything I think or build, whether I am on the clock or not. It was in the handbook, not the paperwork I signed, but it says I agree to it if I keep working for them. It even says I cannot show interest in something without their approval. FUCK!13

Why can't you just fucking tell me what type of website you want. Every week you are fucking adding/removing new features and don't want to pay for it. You know what? Fuck you! From next week Monday I' am putting your website on hold until you agree to pay for the changes we made for the past 3 weeks.
On the same note, fuck you to my General Manager who thinks he will get laid for not charging for the changes made to the website. She is just using you dumb piece of shit.1 -
I've just found the worst website ever. After some seconds, they show a banner with the usual "agree to our use of cookies" stuff. Of course, I clicked on settings. I think you can see we're this is going...2

"I have a great idea for a messaging app.
But I can't tell you what it is until you agree to make it for me, I can't pay you right now but I'll pay you back when we make tonnes of money!"

my cousin wants to buy a new phone and asked for advice. (with advice I mean saying what he wants and hoping I agree)
*talks about lumia 930.
me: you won't be able to use these apps x,y,z......
him: why not it has better specs than mine. bla bla.... you will see.
week later
him: phone doesn't have Play Store installed. can you do it?5 -
Well, I got it. The new job that is so from December first I really am a C# developer :)

Damn Google.
"hey my company I like diversity, and agree with our goal but think we are punishing people for voicing an opinion that we could accomplish our values of nondiscrimination using better methods"
Googles Response "we encourage diversity including diversity of opinions. All employees should be safe to talk about these things. Oh and FUCK you man you're fired we don't agree with you standing up and voicing a differing opinion"3 -
I had code waiting in review for ten days, blocking other work. On the eleventh day, the final reviewer (who was standing behind me as I wrote it) says "I'm not sure that I agree with the design, here."
I get you, man, I can re-write the algorithm, but I am so not in that context anymore and you've just delayed release of the feature by at least a week. Ugggh.5 -
Priceless advice to all. Never agree to work on a project where graphic designers are overseeing it. You will be installing a scripty handwritten font the week before go live, changing out images but the ecommerce portion has not yet been implemented much less tested. I thought I would be implementing a typical Shopify site but no it is "story telling" they say. Oh yeah go live is 4 days away.5

Sometimes I would like to rank the intensity of my likes/upvotes/++'es (depending on what social media I'm using). I know this would make things extra complicated and it would be a bad idea. But sometimes I upvote something because I agree with a statement or I just like the post, but sometimes a post makes me feel so understood or it makes me laugh for 3min straight and that makes me want to upvote it 3 times as much as the others. But I guess that's where the favourite function comes into play3

Absolutely SICK of clients contesting invoices, refusing to pay and paying late.
I work bloody hard building websites for these people, often saving their business and doing a huge amount of work they’ll never understand or appreciate. Agree a price and pay it, stop being horrible greedy arseholes.
Arghhhhhhhh5 -
Fucking kill me. I've just agreed to make a shitty fucking app that would be better as a Webpage, using shitty fucking technologies I don't understand, to do a thing that would be better handled by a third party.
You know why? The guy who asked me to do it is a good friend, and I'm the "best (only) code monkey" he knows. FUCK MY LIFE.
At least I'm getting payed7 -
Me : java is suck.
Friend : php is suck.
Friend2 : c++ is suck.
Friend3 : network is suck.
Friend4 : security is very suck!
All : I agree.5 -
Almost a month has gone by with my new job, and I already hate it. I thought it would be fun... but it is the worst!
They expect us to work 24/7! What are we? Robots? I am not working 24/7, end of discussion. Even if this means I have to quit my job at the end of this week if they don't agree to my "demands" about having a healthy working hours. I am already looking for a new job, because I got a feeling they won't want me there anymore after this week, because we're going to have a meeting about this.3 -
I was suggested as a kid to “avoid using too much “uh”s and “umm”s while speaking, especially if giving a speech. It sounds bad.” And I agree.
But now, I see, that people generally don’t fucking care about how they speak. Almost every video on the internet (especially the teaching videos) is full of bloody “uh”s and “umm”s.
It’s okay once or twice, if someone genuinely forgets about something. But why the fuck is it becoming part of people’s way of speaking?
Ruins the whole experience of a video. Even if the video’s contents are actually good.
Pause if you want to, but stop the fucking moaning!7 -
I've seen a lot of hate to Macbooks and Apple products in general, and although I agree that iphone could be dramatically improved in terms of hardware I think that OSX is the best platform to do Web development.
Which one would you pick and why? Windows, OSX or Linux.27 -
Flex + CSS grids is awesome. I know I am late. I regret not realizing this earlier. Way earlier.
Someone who does not agree with me please read this: https://css-tricks.com/snippets/...4 -
OMFG I'm exhausted from the workload this last week, but everything is due this week and I'm totally ruined because everything is half done. Just murder me in my sleep please.3

I don't like others to know that i'm a programmer. Do you agree or why shall they know? It just changes their opinion on you.4

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
What does it mean when one day you are fighting management on every decision and then suddenly they agree with everything you say?
Have I been victim of brainwashing?3 -
a former client and their client keep contacting me about the project i did for them, we couldn't agree on a new contract but they keep asking me things about the site but, if they had signed would be billable.
Sorry i dont work for free.2 -
For anyone that uses Dev.to,
Do you agree with their rosy mentality of all inclusiveness? I think they take it a to an extreme.
I've seen multiple dev posts where someone (as an example) created an application called brogrammer for lifting weights and literally all comments were "the name is not inclusive omg, y do this" and berating their fellow dev because they named their app something that is little bit more masculine and straying away from the no gender posts. Its retarded imo.12 -
Not my rant, but this person can probably use some devRant in his/her life. Go read the full tweet and his/her replies here.
Buck up for a very very long read.
https://twitter.com/gravislizard/...
There was quite the argument storm in (a) similar rant(s) here, so hope peeps don’t mind how this is just adding to the pile. The tweet uses a lot of web examples and bashed really hard on them.
PS: I do web dev myself, but I have to agree to certain nasty things about it.9 -
Really hate that Motorola are quite happy producing shit iPhone X knockoffs but they can't create a moto 360 gen 3... Priorities guys!

I hate those morons who do QA by simply clicking around. You are a disgrace to people like me who like to code and still enjoy doing testing.
Get a life you fuckers. You are the sole reason why many people in industry thinks that QA is something anybody can do.
Yes, I agree you can test the application, but in no way you could ensure the quality of the product.4 -
Did anyone else follow the epic duck twitter battle between museums around the world?
Seems it was started by The MERL: https://twitter.com/TheMERL/status/...
A nice summary: https://mashable.com/article/...
I agree completely with the one tweeted response in the link above:
"Honestly seeing museums flex over ducks in their collection is the kind of energy I want from 2019" (https://mobile.twitter.com/hannahke...) -
Agree or disagree?
My friend said programming for fun is ludicrous... I program for fun...
Actually I was planning to use my comic reader I wrote but ended up spending half the night adding a feature to it....5 -
Consultant: "I don't agree with that, it's got to be something else" when you point to a known fault with the function they are using in the framework.
Then you send them 10 articles from stackoverflow and the framework's own website.
Consultant: "Oh. Thank you."
Just let me fix the damned bugs and not have to justify every single fucking change I have to make to make the damned thing work the way it is fucking supposed to.
This is why we can't have nice things. -

So, settle an argument between me and my dad. My mom wants to start programming, and me and my father can't seem to agree which language would be easier to learn first, where there's no shortage for jobs. My father says Visual Basic or C#, while I say PHP or Java. What would you recommend?22

Sweet, sweet weekend. :)
Now that I'm done working for money, it's time for ... CS studies assignments! Yay!
(A friend once told me jokingly I was a sucker for pain. I'm inclined to agree now.)11 -
I'm really sick of elitist JS/front-end devs acting like these front-end heavy sites are any better than a traditional site using SSR (server-side rendering). Single page apps (SPAs) have 1 large benefit over an app with full page requests: the web dependencies (CSS,JS,etc) don't have to be looked up and downloaded on every page load. With optimized caching headers and HTTP2, this is not a problem. I agree with every point this guy makes: https://blog.usejournal.com/spa-or-...6
-
Had to wake up 1 hour earlier today, and the worry of that kept me awake last night. Now I sit here like a zombie, hating the day that I'm going to have, which is not full of exciting coding with headphones on and Babymetal in my ears, but full of meetings.
I already see my eyes tearing up, reality fading, a guy in a meeting asking me something and pulling me back to reality so that I could stare blankly into his eyes and reply a generic "Yeah, I agree with your proposal", so everyone will think that I'm on drugs or something.
Welp... gotta go. Fuck.2 -
Therapy is hardest when you're starting it IMO. I don't like talking about my vulnerabilities with people face to face very much, I get pretty defensive about it. We've agree that I'm suffering from a high level of anxiety which is likely leading to depression and we'll be working on solutions in the coming weeks.
Over the weekend I stopped programming and dedicated myself to more leisure. Went out for a hike (literally) and got a PS4, my first new gaming machine in over two years. Been playing Horizon Zero Dawn.
I'm starting to feel a little bit better. :)1 -
I've come across this website:

Can’t wait for the next year to be attacked by pop-ups asking me if I agree with the site using cookies. Now more than ever, because everybody cares about cookies, and it’s totally not going to ruin the user experience.
I can’t wait for another law that will force sites to ask users if they agree with usage of JavaScript.4 -

Argh recruiters!! After 4 emails back and forth because he won’t tell me the company name I agree to a call. Basic role for a basic company. Today's software industry is crap!
Ok, a little clickbait tittle ;)
Today, a friend of mine sent me a great text about the laziness and complete lack of care for efficiency and simplicity in software development industry. I totally agree with the author, and encourage you guys to read it, and give it a deep thought:

I don't know what shall be the hill I die on, the subject my children and I will never agree, the thing that will make future generations condemn mine as irredeemable bigots.
I am sure I have no idea what currently ridiculous notion will be the one I shall be thought as a dinosaur for refusing to accept.
I guess it will have something to do with AI.
Nevertheless, I say for sure:
CARS SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE!9 -

Ah Windows, I do love how you can't even agree with yourself. -
Okay, seriously, who invented merge conflicts? I want names! It's like playing Jenga with code, hoping your masterpiece doesn't topple over. I've seen more ">>>>>> HEAD" blocks than actual code lately.
Can we all agree to commit more frequently and save my sanity, please?5 -
Didn't think I had material for a rant but... Oh boy (at least at the level I'm at, I'm sure worse is to come)
I'm a Java programmer, lets get that out of the way. I like Java, it feels warm and fuzzy, and I'm still a n00b so I'm allowed to not code everything in assembly or whatever.
So I saw this video about compilers and how they optimize and move and do stuff with the machine code while generating the executable files. And the guy was using this cool terminal that had color, autocomplete past commands and just looked cool. So I was like "I'll make that for my next project!"
In Java.
So I Google around and find a code snipped that gives me "raw" input (vs "cooked" input) and returns codes and I'm like 😎. Pressing "a" returns 97 (I think that's the ASCII value) and I think this is all golden now.
No point in ranting if everything goes as planned so here is the *but*
Tabs, backspaces and other codes like that returned appropriate ASCII codes in Unix. But in windows, no such thing. And since I though I'd go multiplatform (WORA amarite) now I had to do extra work so that it worked cross platform.
Then I saw arrow keys have no ASCII codes... So I pressed a arrow key and THREE SEPARATE VALUES WERE REGISTERED. Let me reiterate. Unix was pretending I had pressed three keys instead of one, for arrow keys. So on Unix, I had to work some magic to get accurate readings on what the user was actually doing (not too bad but still...). Windows actually behaved better, just spit out some high values and all was good. So two more systems I had to set up for dealing with arrow keys.
Now I got to ANSI codes (to display color, move around the terminal window and do other stuff). Unix supports them and Windows did but doesn't but does with some Win 10 patch...? But when tested it doesn't (at least from what I've seen). So now, all that work I put into making one Unix key and arrow key reader, and same for Windows, flies out the window. Windows needs a UI (I will force Win users, screw compatibility).
So after all the fiddling and messing, trying to make the bloody thing work on all systems, I now have to toss half the input system and rework it to support UI. And make a UI, which I absolutely despise (why I want to do back end work and thought this would be good, since terminal is not too front end).2 -
My C adventure is going horribly. So I stopped. I took a second to breathe then looked at my current resources decided to use the 2 books i have as references to learn from as well, then found a reasonably long YouTube guide so I can have someone verbally explain something, and I have a friend and a few places I can now ask questions if I need it. So yeah I'm pretty confident now.rant c is a neutral entity in my life why did i choose this profession c why did i agree to this learning c7

So, I fixed this shitty code, real shitty, inlined some shit and shaved off some other shit and it was fixed...
The reviewer says we'd better request a review from the dude that's actually responsible for that piece of shit code - what the fuck...
Here comes this bossy fucker saying they don't really understand that shit so they don't know for sure if there could be a better way...
Me, ignorant as always, popped a vessel figuring out a cleaner way.
I tell those sick fucks that we'd need to change some shit over at another repository, also maintained by the latter turd.
The latter turd says they like my second suggestion better, to which I reply,
'ok, I agree.'
In my mind that pull was done, should be closed and water under the bridge but oh how clueless I was...
SIX FUCKING MONTHS later the same shitbag pops out of god knows where asking if I still wanted to work on the pull....
"Motherfucker, my pull was for this fucking code, not for doing work on the other, obviously I'm not interested in doing that or else I would've opened a pull there instead of here, dumb-dumb" - I thought
Thou what I said was:
"No, I don't. I agree it's a problem better solved at the other repository."
Maybe I was a bit mean, was I? I don't know, honestly, people confuse me2 -
I don't generally agree with the death sentence, but maaaybe it should be allowed specifically for the person who created the current iteration of Windows Update. Just got woken up by a video playing on my computer, which happened because Windows fucking Update thought it was a good time to reboot for no reason.

Way back in high school there was a school wide competition to see who would represent the school at the bigger competition (I dunno, regional or something). Halfway during the test I was on the third out of four tasks while pretty much everyone else was on the first one. The teacher saw this, looked at what I did and said to everyone "He is already on task 3, does everyone agree he represents the school?"
Everybody said yes immediately.
:) The dev equivalent of a K.O. win, felt pretty badass :D -
Me: Ok, this sounds like a good idea, however we need to consult the Act to ensure we're not breaking any laws by requesting this new information and making it mandatory.
Boss: I am trying to ensure good database management and data design principles, why can't you just agree with me?
Me:... I agree with you... But changing up the process like this may put us in hot water, let's just check to ensure we're good on the legal front --
Boss: The law is just a guide. My primary concern and your concern should be the design of this database and ensuring we stick to good data management principles!

I don't think it should take "years" to develop a card sorting mechanism.
Android devs do you agree?
( This is picked up from the release notes of Trello. )6 -
I always see people who say that open source != monetarily free. While I agree that may be technically true, I think practically speaking it is not.
Why do I say this?
Well to my knowledge there isn't any successful company that makes money by actually selling open source software. There are a few companies that have become successful by selling complimentary services like Redhat with Enterprise support or Mozilla with selling ad space in their browser, but none that actually sell the software directly.1 -
Okay so one of my friends got an offer for a more powerful server with 128GB RAM, ok processor because the current server load is high. When they got the offer of the new one I saw there was in the licenses part, Windows Server 2016. Which to me seems worst thing you can do for just using PHP, MySQL and nothing active directory or really windows specific. Can some of u please write in short why use linux for servers instead of shitdows. And it would clearly cost much less. Because I guess if other tell it they, the client, will agree...16

Recently I learned that the collective noun for a group of hedgehogs is an "array".
Possibly the only kind of array where we can all agree, you'd have to start counting it from 1.
Or I guess you could just name a pet hedgehog "Element Zero" if that's how you prefer your arrays2 -
New question to ask potential employers: What makes this work so difficult? is it innovative or in a challenging domain? Or is it because of a poorly documented, poorly maintained code base between multiple groups that can't agree on terminology?
Though if you ask, you should probably be more polite than I am hearing this in my head.2 -
Why are you all so obsessed with hating jQuery? For me it just does the job done. Animate stuff. But I agree being totally dependant on javascript is bad for any website. Seen hundreds of wordpress spaghetti code where fancy effects were made with jquery like CSS opacity 0 and jquery animate to 1... What a bullshit. But yeah I still love jquery. Easy, fast and reliable.3

Not drunk, still underage. I can share a wonderful story from when my wisdom teeth were pulled. My mom made me agree to not work on anything, especially code, when I came home. However, I had an awesome CPU architecture design project, and I was ready to make a few example programs in the assembly language. When I woke up the next morning with a clearer mind, I looked at the code again. ^A , ^X. Mom said "I told you so."

!rant, but friendly advice.
I see all those jokes about Android Studio being too heavy, and while I completely agree, want to ask you guys something:
Have you increased the memory it can use in .vmoptions?
Mine lagged as hell, but was using only about 1GB of ram.
After slight change in that file, it finally started working like it should from the beginning.6 -
After watching YT-Videos about the Language/Framework/... , I start during a long weekends night with a fresh Spotify-Playlist. 😁
The few first days are always the most productive ones... Until you loose motivation... 😒
Do you hear music when coding? Sometimes I think, I could be way more productive when I just code without it. Do you agree?1 -
Hey guys! So I need advice/strategy’s on how to let someone go in your life. It all started when I became friends with this person through other mutual friends, at first I didn’t even think twice about him. But now we started talking more and I realize he’s funny and nice, however, he does do some pretty bad things I don’t agree with. And whenever we are in public he ignores me and goes off with my other friends, how do I stop stressing about this. I really just want to let go of this person and move on, go back to not even thinking twice about him. I need help on how to do this, thank you so much for your time and advice.5

Starting programming project at the collage with 6 month running time.
In team we agree every day to start "soon"...
1 month left.. everybody gets hectic..
..Until then i had finished the project alone..
TEAMWORK ;) :''''''D -
You'd think with all the data Facebook and Google collect, they'd be able to air some halfway relevant political ads.
Having ads I don't agree with shoved down my throat isn't going to make me change my views, it's just going to make me resent that particular group or person more.8 -
I've been meaning to sign up on dev.to for a while now.
Finally started the sign up process. They require you to agree to follow their code of conduct which states that they will prioritize empowering the marginalized communities and in order to do that they will *not* act on complaints of reverse-isms. Reverse (sexism | racism), cisphobia, etc.
Am I the only one who thinks that this is wrong? I'm all for empowering people, tolerance and not getting trolled but outrightly rejecting complaints on topics that seem politically incorrect sounds superfluous to me. Am I interpreting something wrong? (I hope I am because in general I find the community to be nice and positive)3 -
I mean. People love Docker and Kubernetes? Really? I mean, I agree it's good. I'm just wishing if people demanded for better and simple software and not complicated stuff. Idk10

Wrote a detailed spec, costed and agreed. Meanwhile client and designer agree upon half baked designs that only vaguely resemble the spec. Don't worry though, I have balls. I'm not a yes man. Will put them both straight (again) on how the fuck we do things if it involves me, incompetent twats. Will soon be calling the shots again. Ha ha, it's either that or I fucking walk.

Hi I just joined this great Community and here is my thoughts about programming tap "++" if you agree if not then change your mind.
For me programming is like becoming wizard of next generation. Like wizard you can control or create anything because in future you will find electronics containing programs written by a wizard (programmer). We are not people who can repair computer but greater then that because a pc is just a box without programs (software)
You are reading this article because you loves challenges and you are hard working too.1 -
I like style checkers. I really do. I may not agree with any of the rules they force upon the rules, but I will bury that for consistent code. That said, why, oh why, does this damn thing have to fail out the build rather than just warning me in the IDE. This fucker takes 15 minutes to build and when it fucks the build, it's a huge waste of time.
That said, anyone know how to get check style rules out of Maven and put them in IntelliJ? Myself and my team would love you forever.3 -
Good one 😅,
Indeed #Debugging isn't always that much fun, but I have learned a lot by debugging the code and still learning so many things. It helps us become better.
Agree?1 -
Guys, do you agree that C++ is getting overly complicated following the updated versions?
At times I wonder whether I should leave C++ and jump to python as my goto programming language.24 -
You ever agree to do something that you really don't want to do because you don't want to piss off the other person?
Like, I could've avoided doing this shit if I just were an asshole. Ugh6 -
My biggest insecurity is not being able to understand the problem or figure out how to solve it.
Also seeing that we aren't finding a common ground to agree to about the problem and/or solution thinking if I was just talking gibberish to them all along and I can't just carry the message across.1 -
can we agree that T is a dumb variable name?
I mean I totally know what it means in that instance, but why do people keep writing math stuff like they'd skribble it on paper?8 -
Is it just me or is everyone thinking the binary ++ counter is a good idea?
I think it’s really cool because it sort of hides the number of ++ you have behind a wall of laziness. Like people probably aren’t going to convert every score and I personally just look at the length of it as a rough estimate of how upvoted a user is.
I think this really helps eliminate the “likes contest” that can come with other social media. (And as a result reduces spam that is posted/reposted just to get likes)
Anyone agree? Disagree?5 -
So my software head wants everything on linux based servers and i totally agree with. We are trying gitlab and devops installed on Windows server.
I am fucking angry now.
Why the fuck Windows. -
Sometimes we can be productive even without the Internet. But I believe we would all like to agree on this that as soon as the Internet goes down, we want to smash those keyboards and start shouting at people, "Why is the Internet down???" Because it's the one excuse that can always save you.1

When you tell one of your teammates this would be a perfect feature to develop using TDD. They agree, and after a couple of days they send you a code review with 0 unit tests and a message saying "I will start working on the tests while you review this."

Not technically a devRant buuuuuuut...
Everyone is banging on about exclusives in the gaming industry and how the Xbox is a failure because it had barely any exclusives... Does anyone else think that exclusivity is actually ruining the industry to a point?
People are still going to be a console gamer, I don't prefer Xbox because of Halo or any other Xbox exclusive, I choose it because of the interface and I always prefered all the Xbox controllers over PlayStation...
Just think Devs should treat everything equally and just develop for as much as they can?
Anyone else agree or am I the only apple on the tree here?1 -
I feel like a good rule of thumb of how good a developer is (or how senior are they) is whether they know when a question should go in stackover and when it should go in softwareengineerin.stackexchange.
Do anybody agree?1 -
Yeeehaw,
i finally get rid off that over-the-top dependency on Zend\Config in upwork/phystrix
The Pull-Request is on it's way:
https://github.com/upwork/phystrix/...
After 4 years of "this will take minutes to refactor" and "yeah. I totally agree. Replace Zend\Config with Array Interfaces", someone (in this case me) took finally care of this easy to solve issue :)
I hope it will be merged soon into the master branch -
In the first one, the group would just not get to agree at something, they'd spend hours talking about an approach.
First times, I was like "Hey, why don't we do this?", they began to argue and half an hour later, they agreed to whatever I said in the first place (they didn't acknowledge what I said and they tell me they came with the solution and that I didn't say anything)
Fucking shit, if only they listened in the first time. -
Friday, late due trains, on schedule for presenting last month's work.

When your coding at the cafeteria at school...
Woah! Are you hacking? Can you hack this game for me? Stop hacking you'll get expelled.
I just sit there and agree with it all ;D -
I'm curious, why do you guys seem to always put up with "I changed my mind, I need it by Friday" kind of requests? "I've pulled an all-nighter, because customer wanted it before the holidays" - didn't you agree to do it after the holidays? Did the customer come by with a bag of money for you to put away everything else for them? Even if you do get paid extra, do you really get that much more to make your suffering worth it?6

Agree or disagree?
I disagree.... When debugging, I'd like to breakpoint here (inside the DAO class) and see the results.4 -
The hardest part in my job these days is thinking commit and PR messages :/
I believe my code and commits and PRs are always self explanatory, the company doesn't agree apparently.2 -
My boss has been pretty insistent on us writing good tests (which I wholeheartedly agree with) for our new project, and being the less-experienced junior that I am, asked if we could get some guidance or a demonstration.
Took two weeks, but I finally got it said guidance... by opening a pull request with tests that weren't absolutely perfect.1 -

Six months ago, I architected a solution that I thought was pretty darn good. Of course my boss didn't agree and basically twisted my arm until I agreed to go along with his approach. Today, he's walking back on it.. and telling us we can refactor the solution if it doesn't make sense anymore.. so back to my original solution?
If only he listened in the first place.. -
"The longer one carries a problem, the heavier it gets",
that being said, I'm struggling with repetitive code, bad indention and illogical logic.
So yeah, I agree with this saying -
The world must truly hate me.
I refactored my code a lot in order to easily integrate different APIs endpoints but then I can't use the one I specifically did this for, because of TLS errors.
My browsers all agree that it's fine, but curl and the 2 http libraries I tested can't fetxh any data.
END ME!9 -
I read this post somewhere where this son of a bitch created 4 5 accounts, then submitted fake PRs across those accounts to each other during Hacktoberfest.
People like these are fucking losers absolutely destroying the credibility of a event like Hacktoberfest.
People like them would sell of their own fucking soul for a T shirt

Because of cache split brain issue I have to invalidate cache every 5min. I've said to lead dev about this hack and we both agree to solve it asap.
This was 3 months ago...
Temporary fix becomes production solution. And it only took me 10min to add cron entry to every prod srv.
So productive!

Storing ToS in Database.
So, all my life I've built custom software for businesses that do no intent to be used by public.
Now I am developing an online store and the user has to agree to ToS before signing up. I was wondering, if the users agrees to ToS should I store it in database that he accepted? If yes, will it be just a boolean or a text.

Although I can agree with a lot of things in this article, they say things like "geeky references and a competitive environment" prevent women from entering tech.
Common, of course theres gonna be competition, and women are totally capable of beating it. About geeky references, this is the field that makes most geeky references, women included2 -
I haven't slept since yesterday, I have a problem, please tell me someone does agree that they would rather be typing away than sleep.

~16 hours. It was during the start of my career. Like every other project manager, mine had also made an unrealistic plan for the project I was on.
10/10 wouldn’t agree to work like that again. -
So, a year ago we started to learn java at school. Since I have started learning java I hated it. I don't know why, but I absolutely don't like java. Do you guys agree? I want to like java, but I have no reasons why, anyone has some tips?5

Yesterday I saw video (it's a sketch),
Where in a scene, there is a meet where the presenter says :
"We should use SAS instead of R Tools ! "
Do u guys agree??
BTW I completely lost my Mind after hearing that!2 -

8 hours ... maybe?!?! I agree with previous ranter who says we CANNOT work more than 2 hours straight without some sort of break.
Including breaks, but not including sleep ... once did 48 hours -
Has any of you listen to Peter Thiel recently? I agree with him on "we are not really doing innovation" but iterations of the same technologies' for last 20 years in IT.10

Well, yes. My boss accepted my 'test' project to be build for production use, stack is Laravel, Vue, a little Python.
It is divided into phases where as I have now month and a half to finish phase 1.
You agree I will finish the first phase in time? (24-2) Keep in mind I still have other projects I'm working on.9 -
Everyone on my team now seems to to agree with everything I say about things we should do.
This sorta gives me the greenlight to go ahead and do it but makes me wonder if it's now the equivalent to "yea, yea, yea... Now go away" and they won't follow along once I've done it. -
Me: "let's just update the data frame directly and also change the code to re-create it, but without actually recreating from scratch" (because it would take multiple hours of manual labour)
My junior colleague: "I agree! But let's be honest: if this were my proposal to you, you'd have rolled your eyes and disagreed..."

Was having a conversation with a dev friend and he said, in every tech implementation, we are more or less doing CRUD operations at fundamental level.
To which, I agree with as there are three layers to tech
1. Data
2. Front end where the data is rendered
3. APIs to perform CRUD on data
Want to understand community's thoughts on this..13 -
Someone in the #us slack channel posted about how, if other Americas were dealing with roe v wade, they could come to the mental health channel.
I really want to respond about how Americans are a diverse group, and some are thankful for a judgement that preserves what some consider life, and to keep our diverse opinions in mind.
But I'm not going to. I'm not stupid. It's not worth starting a fight or potentially losing a job over. So I remain silent, like a coward.
I earn a lot of money, enough to ignore ideology I don't agree with, and messages that would have been considered totally inappropriate at one time.21 -
I don't know if I'm projecting but I think my manager never agree with any idea I present to him. I had to bring an urgent implementation to VP for him to accept it. I feel like we, as a the team, stuck with whatever tech stack he chose, whatever he feels comfortable. No improvement, no challenge, no stat, no data; everything we do is just based on his feeling about things. He's not even 30 yet, but I feel like talking to a stubborn 60yo everytime I discuss an idea.2

Anyone not a fan of Material Design especially the ripple effect? If not a fan, please tell me why. If yes, please tell me why, too.

I'm looking for a personal project involving IPFS. I know that a lot of people say that IPFS is going to revolutionize the way we think of Internet and its the future and so on and so forth. I fully agree with this. But, from a practical stand point, I am wondering if there is any kind of service that absolutely necessitates the use of IPFS. In other words, is there something that I can work on that isn't already accomplished by a traditional, centralized service?2

If a project's structure is shit, well of course, let's continue using it because "it is known". Doing it any other way "will add complexity".
That I wasted three days making my working code adhere to the clusterfuck of a structure, nevermind that. Let's continue. And yes, colleagues do agree that the structure is shit, though let's improve it ... later.
Or in other words: Suck it up, we always have done it this way. Fuck you and your ill-advised attempts of trying to improve it. -
Fucking windows not releasing my hard drive. I was in a kind of a hurry, but you just have to be a pain in the arse. Now I even have to wait for you to fix an indexing error for something I did not agree to?
FUCKING BULLSHIT, MY DUDE NEXT TO ME USING LINUX WAS USING IT JUST FINE!
I want enough time to replace this garbage.
By the time I got here, it finished scanning for errors. NO. FUCKING. ERRORS. FOUND. FUCKING. WASTE. OF. TIME. -

I agree with Python being very useful due to library availability. Not sure what I think about C beating out C++ though. I would much prefer programming in C++ to C any day. I don't like Java, but a LOT of people use Java.
I find it interesting that a lot of people talk about Rust, but I am not seeing it in the top 10. Is it just too new?
What I find most interesting is that this is a good list of languages to learn. These are what are being used in the field. Well, at least from the the perspective of IEEE.

Anyone know where I can get a tombstone made for an application? Finally got the powers that be to agree to retire an application that I have been asking about for over a year.

As much as I hate writing documentation, I agree that it's a necessary evil. I also try to be as descriptive as possible where it makes sense. But, do we really need a 6-page document explaining how to run a query that updates a user's role?1

PO writes a story. We groom it. Point it. Do the work. Finish the work. Dev test it. Push it to test. Tester find a weird edge case. Talks to me. I agree it’s weird. I talk to PO and the PM in the standup. PO realizes the whole business flow doesn’t make any sense. Changes the AC. Asks us to change/redo shit. 2 days until the end of the sprint.
I guess I’m working this weekend. Not that I have to go anywhere 🤷🏽♂️4 -
The new project was started.
Planning, analysis, design.... all right.
Now contacting all the companies for partner programs, finding payment gateway that will agree to work with our country.
For fucks sake. third week goes, and still no code writing. Just researching, contacting, researching. Urgh.
I want to code already! I am just
a backend/DevOps person! When it would be coding time?!3 -
Being a front end develop of mostly PHP projects and also designer of everything for the company, probably best that I use OS X most of the time.
My place doesn't agree. They realise that I can't use Windows because it's support of PHP is laughable at best. However, they don't understand how difficult it is find a good quality piece of Ubuntu software for designing responsive websites. It just doesn't exist as far as I'm aware.23 -
When you realize you are blocked ........
Background:
A simulation I am working on stopped working due to some linking errors again. I looked it up online and followed some suggestions. Deleting the project from work space and reimporting it. I also created a new workspace and compared binary files with another similar class. The makefile seems to be detecting it. It just doesn’t agree with he file syntax although it’s correct. Oh no ....
Me: “You gotta be kidding! I just want to code .....!”1 -
Stackoverflow...some love it some hate it. I personally really like and try and again as much as possible, but what thing that is really starting to annoy me is lack of upvoting on questions. People will happily down vote poor queations and tend to upvote and downvote answers appropriately but there seems to be huge lack positive feedback on good questions... It's very annoying. Anyone else agree?

I have a task:
Make a feature to gather donates at web site through debit cards and e.t.c.
Additional conditions:
There is no company to register the payment gateway.
U need to find the one that would agree to work with physical person in Russia.
It needs to accept payments in USD and EURO worldwide.1 -
I'd like to share this article i found on reddit with you :

It's about bloated sowftware and performances on modern hardware, I mostly agree with it. What are your thoughts ?3 -
I saw few rants about "working in a box". Isn't that legacy technique and we all are now working in open space?I have auto adjusting chair that costs more than my month salary, desk which raises when I push button, console rooms etc etc
Still some thinks that we are slaves of companies working 'in the boxes '. If you are on devrant and you agree with this kind of jokes I must say that you have chosen a bad place to work ;( -
I’m a Frontend developer and my wife is Quality assurance Lead. We never tend to agree on things even personal. But with time I stepped up and developed negotiation skills. Now things are getting better 🙂1

Ok, let's agree to stop giving applications names that are so ambiguous that they give no clue what the purpose is.
Google Play Store has top 2016 apps... Under "most innovative" is the app, "Eve" by "Glow". Is it a game? General app? I was curious and clicked for the detail...
I never in a million years would have clicked on that! Wow. 😓 -
Any heuristics on using new JS/CSS features?
I thought of waiting 2 years, but I just saw an article that recommended waiting 6 months.
Another factor could be covered percentage, based on caniuse. 98%+ is the coverage of things we can all agree we can use, so is 95%+ enough for new features? 90%+ (so 1 in 10 people wouldn't get the expected experience)?5 -
"All Tech Projects Run Over Budget"
https://medium.com/@team_96861/...
I was on a nice streak of being calm for a while and then this article just dropped today. Fuck management and fuck whichever dumbass wrote this piece of shit.
Is anyone else pissed off at this? It makes it sound like software engineers are slow and never on time, and the main reason for a project's failure is the inability of programmers to meet deadlines. I find this a little sus, especially as it's written by someone in a management position.
I would argue that projects fail because:
1. Management takes the very feasible timeline given to them and throws it out the window, opting to impose impossible deadlines instead, because FUCK your employees right?
2. Clients have requirements that can't be met (I agree w/ this from the article, but not the part about developers not accounting for issues--I always do this and everyone I know does this)
3. Technical Debt arising from when management tells the software engineers to *just do it this way because it's cheaper*
The calculator they made is nice but it's also quoting estimates that I and everyone I've spoken to agree with, so this is clearly not a software engineer problem, it's a fucking management problem. "Budget" = accounting's job.
/rant
That being said, the "take their quote and triple it" part had me dead...1 -
Just bought a new, cheap laptop for travel purposes.
It turns out I cannot start Windows 10 without giving Microsoft my phone number or an email. And the installator asks me if I agree to allow the apps to use „advertisement id”. It doesn’t ask if I like rough pegging.
Luckily, there’s a lot of temp e-mail solutions and I happen to have internet access on my other devices.
Then I have to spend 20 minutes uninstalling all the crap Asus preinstalled on MY computer. Seriously, when did I order „Asus Giftbox” or McAfee virus? The Asus-crap deinstalator displays a screen where I am asked to create an Asus account.
Question to apple funboys: is the experience the same when you buy a new Mac?12 -
Noticing that we have several stories in sprint that are scattered across the backlog, some are at the top, some at the bottom...
Me: I think we should prioritize the backlog.
PO: I agree; When do you think you'll be done?1 -
Hello, fellow developers, i am having a question in mind that confusing me about my career choices.
At first i joined a company as a full stack developer with 6 months experience in MERN, MySql etc.
Now i have completed nearly 1 year in this company but they are always assigning me to full DevOps CI/ CD projects. And i agree i am learning a lot of new things and completed the given works too.
BUT , the question is , should i completely shift as devops engineer or software developer? What might be a better career in long term?
Ps: in CI/CD i did almost all works in Typescript using CDK and sometimes a little bit in python (not good in python but learning)10 -
i think 2022 is gonna be the worst year ever judging by the omnicron and i think there will be more covid varients, and they will be more dangerous. the vaccine could just not work in response to the variant and millions of people could die because of that.
it could be a good year, but i don't really agree with that. and judging by the past two years, it doesn't look so good because of what happened in the last two years.
(blm riots, covid, india running out of oxygen for its hospitals, january sixth, etc)
but maybe, just maybe its good, but i don't really know.3 -
Working with a tester that scope creeps and then “fails” the tests because they did not live up to the scope that the person added just now............. Man, that grinds my gears.. And then reaches out in order to verify whether a feature could be nice to have, and when I agree, she slams it in as a scope creep on another feature and “fails” the test.. Going slightly crazy here2

I am starting to agree more and more with Linus' assessment that C++ is stupid! Maybe I should move to C!1

I'm starting to really regret not meeting more professors in school. I'm trying to found a ctf team at my university and can't get a single professor to agree to advise the club (it's required to use school resources) loads of interested students but I can't find a single staffer. All the computer science professors talk about how important cybersecurity is but they don't want anything to do with it.
I'm so desperate I'm about to reach out to... information systems professors from the college of business2 -

I see a lot of dislike on Wordpress here, which I do agree and I loathe it just as much. But what’s your opinion on Wix.com?
I’ve used it before, and it’s way worst than Wordpress for me.
PS: Let’s not talk about this from a non-dev standpoint cause we can come to a consensus that these are friendly (and made to be so) for them, until they want a certain feature on their site.
PSS: I’ve not seen much of a discussion about Wix since coming on, but there seems to be a lot about Wordpress.3 -
I just submitted "a lower price found" on GrubHub for an order I just made. Haven't gotten back to me yet but apparently if they agree, they'll give a $15 credit.
I think other services have this gaurantee too... So wondering...
How hard is it to write an app coloring menu prices between all these services...
Could get a lot of credits... And why haven't they done it themselves.
I'm not really up for the task at the moment but basically you just generate a table with all the prices from each service and highlight the ones that are different...
Then profit!!!6 -
When you agree upon a project and the functionality included in the project, and the client keeps adding more features.
At this point I would rather not have started the project at all1 -
Okay, can anyone explain to me why this is the third time in a row that I have to re-disable "fast startup" after a windows-update?
I know, some of you might think that windows sucks, and I agree, to some extent, but I still want to be able to play my games there.
So, is there any rational explanation for the fact that windows seems to suffer from some kind of amnesia when it comes to settings? I don't believe it was either bad intent or complete incompetence from the developers...
Is it a certain design decision? Or is is that hard to implement "persistent" settings storage?3 -
SITECORE VS OTHER CMS'S
FIGHT!
Someone I know has been convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that SiteCore is this amazing peice of magic software where you push a few buttons and your wildest dreams come true.
Anytime there's a probem with our other websites (laravel sites or Drupal sites) we get a lecute on how a SiteCore site would do X so much better and how the problem would never happen on a SiteCore instance'
I think it's a little bloated and don't like the tech stack behind it.
What are your thoughts on it? Is it magic ? Should I agree with him and just stop fighting the inevitable?1 -
Only just got around to listing to the devRant podcast #1 this morning. DHH is a little potty mouth 🙃
Excellent content none the less! I kind of agree on DHH's stance on project managers.
On a side note, what other podcasts do you guys listen to? I quite like most of the content from jupiter broadcasting. LAS and Coder Radio specifically. -
Agree or disagree?

Now I didn't become a dev solei to avoid paperwork but the lack of paper was appealing...
I'm stuck in a support gig because it pays more than any of the dev jobs I got offered and I do is write is docs on Confluence.
Please no "Money isn't everything" comments. I agree but the dev offers I got, I couldn't live on -
So I tried to buy some recreational stuff from the deep web, and this is what they have replied—
“We're really sorry about it but we have some problems with shipping to your region. If you agree to continue we can get your additional $55 usd payment to the bitcoin address below.”

Ah, the eternal battle between "Allman style" and "K&R style" bracing. Because arguing over where to put an opening curly brace is what I dreamed of when I became a developer.
Can we just agree on something and move on?3
