Reinventing the wheel can be very valuable. Even if you don't create a better wheel, you'll learn a lot about how it works, which can really help you out in the long term.16

- It's a game, play it
- Come prepared
- It's better to say "not sure" or "don't know" than bullshit
- Don't write in the CV (or mention during the interview) things you don't want to be asked about

Last week
Customer: I want <totally useless app idea that already exists>, how long will it take to build it?
Me: I think such an app already exists, but according to your requirements I believe we could finish it around May 6th.
Customer: OK, but our app will be so much better.
-finishes meeting and signs contract-
Monday
Customer: will the app be done soon?
Me: as we discussed in the meeting last week, it won’t be done until May 6th.
Tuesday
Customer: will the app be done soon, when will it be in the app stores?
Me: As I explained yesterday, it won’t be finished before May 6th.

Although I know it's nothing, the irony is real.
My room is connected to the power group together with 5 other people.
Watching a mass surveillance documentary.
Suddenly my power goes out, the rest stays on.
I know it must be a glitch in the newly installed power management system but damn the timing couldn't be better!4 -
This little guy came and went in between my arm and my belly. He must be having a rough day. Just kinda glad I can make it better :)5
-
So my CEO wants me to move to architecting systems!!!!!!!! My dream since a kid !!!
It seems like a mad job where you're a crazy scientist 😂
What should I read or do to be better ? -
I was fired from a job where the boss had it in for me. He was a really experienced dev, but he was also very arrogant. He hated me questioning him. I didn't have the evidence nor the "political" clout to back up my criticisms.
It was humbling.
I realised two things:
keeping your mouth shut is often the best approach.
And
my own arrogance was keeping me from getting better, from learning new things. Not just for the company, but for myself.
I want to write better code, make better design decisions, utilise design patterns, actually think about what I'm doing, and be able to justify why I'm doing it.
I want to be able to choose the best tools for the job, not the best tools for me.
I want to be a person that is open to criticisms and I want to be someone who is always ready to learn new things.9 -
1. Just because it sounds cool doesn't mean it is.
2. Automate all the things. If you can see everything from cli all the better.
3. If it isn't commited and pushed, it doesn't exist or won't after a hard drive burnout
4. Everything on your workstation should be quickly reproduceable or in a git repo.
5. Murphy is a bitch3 -
Boss: we picked up a new client!
Me: nice!
Boss: They want the unfinished software we were working on that we planned to be done 2 months from now.
Me: even better!
Boss: They want it in 3 weeks.
Me:

Me: no.4 -
Dev: We need a better name than “Data” for this class. It’s used for displaying a set of tiles with certain coordinates so maybe TileMap would be a bit more declarative?
Manager: No I don’t like that. Data is perfectly fine, this class is for managing data so it’s perfectly declarative you just need to get better at reading code. If you have to change it then DataObject or DataObjectClass might be a bit more specific.
Dev: …14 -
Guys, Guys, Guys!
I've just won employee of the month! And you know what is even better? The elders of the internet allowed to lend the internet to me to use it in my speech! I couldn't be happier (they even know who I am!)10 -
Sometimes, you'll be tempted to copy-paste some piece of code from somewhere (stack overflow, w3schools, etc). But instead, read the code there and re-type it. Will help you to understand it better.2
-
I need to yell something out loud here because if I don't yell it here I'm going to yell it at a coworker, which would be unprofessional and kinda rude of me.
STOP APOLOGIZING FOR BEING A FUCKING CRETIN AND ALSO STOP BEING A FUCKING CRETIN.
Phew, thanks. That feels better.10 -
Shit code. I've done it, you've done it, we've all done it. Just keep working hard and improving. Eventually, you'll be writing better... shit code.4

How to be a great developer - 101
1. Write Code
2. scrap it
3. Rewrite in a better way..
Repeat! 😂1 -
Today a colleague of mine asked me to help with some javascript. So I said sure, it will be done in 5 minutes. Im a fullstack developer with a focus on backend in this project.
So I opened the frontend part and was amazed how shit the javascript file was. Yes you read it right FILE...
One big file with a lot of variables in the window scope.
Because she was in “charge” of the frontenders because she works there a bit longer then me I never checked the frontend code.
I said I wont/cant help unless I see better code. I explained to a trainee what could be done to change it and Im impressed that the trainee did a better job then the employee and quick as well.
Got the whole code in seperate files with each part of the code in seperate scopes within 2 hours.
What Im saying here is that even as student, intern or trainee you can know things better thsn someone with experience, dont be afraid to speak up. Because everyone can learn from eachother.7 -
Me: "We should do X!"
Client: "I think Y would be better."
Me: "If you're sure..."
Client: "I'm the one paying you!"
*much development time passes*
Client: "We should do X. Isn't it your job to think of these things?"
Me: "..."4 -
Client (big company selling luxury vehicles):
- "We need to replace analytics system on our website"
- "Since it is almost useless"
- "Our company deserve something better, google analytics is not simply enough"
- "Can you program it for us?"
- "We have already arranged budget for that project"
- "Like 200 euros, that must be enough"
Lol3 -
"we use cookies to give you a better experience on our site"
A better experience? Really?
It looks like you're using more than 100 external parties for whatever fucking reason. It is nearly impossible to disallow these, except for some stuff like analytics, which I don't like since it includes mass surveillance parties like Google and Facebook, but I'd at least, to some extent, understand that better.
But, the amount of dark pattern here is staggering and this kind of 'consent' you're using wouldn't, in a million years, hold up under the GDPR.
You know what would be a better experience? No tracking and no ads.
Go fuck your better experience (would that be a better sex experience....?)4 -
Made possible by Synergy! If you don't use it, you should. I'd be curious if people have dropped it for any better alternatives?11

so... i'll probably be joining my first job in 17 days.
My profile is *supposed to be* devops engineer (not that i know much about it, they just felt i was better suited for it than java programming (and i do agree)), although, apparently, the offer letter states java engineer and i talked to them about it, they said that it's a standard template but u are chosen for devops only. i hope that is true.
mostly i feel really upset that college will be over, but i am kinda excited about the job too.
wish me luck guys 😅😅😅13 -
The Linux desktop marketshare. Every year support gets better and better and soon I think it will be higher than the Mac desktop marketshare.
-
I am like the weakest programmer at my job. I wanna improve and get better. Understanding how to write good unit test to reading code. Damn it. I just wanna be better.9

700 years ago, some monk scraped down the ink from a book, so he could reuse it to write down his stupid prayers.
Recent analysis uncovered that the book he scraped was “Method” by Archimedes that outlined the basics of calculus 1000 years before Leibniz.
It makes me feel miserable and helpless when I think how more advanced our world would be if it didn’t happen. I realize he probably didn’t go like “hehehehe I’m erasing scientific knowledge because religion is better”, and just did what he thought was better, but I feel bad nonetheless.16 -
I've lost my gf (she said she wouldn't want to be with a programmer, I said 'sure, bye') and found a much better and more fun career path than I had before.
Otherwise my life stayed pretty much intact, except for the fckn compile time errors and occasional 'fix my electronic device' or 'hack this social media account for me' requests. In retrospect it was more than worth it, would switch to be a professional developer anytime again.11 -
I am really scared of entering into the office. Yesterday I ranted a lot about a bug and today it turned out it was my mistake. Seems it will be better if I will go in wearing a mask.3
-
Well shit.
Language features-wise Rust has a great edge over its main competitor(which seems to be Golang even though they can't really be competitors)
Rust has a better package manager with Cargo.
It also has better documentation. It also has
Wait for it...

A better website and a non retarded looking mascot.

Good morning guys,
Have a nice day with your task today.
Let's smile and be positive you will feel better and more productive ^^

SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL ME:
HOW DO I STOP BEING SO FUCKING AWKWARD!!!!!!!! Tell me please, i swear to you. My life would be so much better if i wasn’t so awkward and have social anxiety. Tell me what to do because i’m tired of it, i hate it so much.42 -
You know what I do when I get upset or depressed?
I put myself in bed. I guess some things from childhood don't change.
Having a tantrum? Time to go to bed.3 -
Just resigned in my current position and signed with a new company for a much better opportunity. So I hope this will be it.2
-
Got rejected after final-round interviews with Amazon again. Can’t say it doesn’t hurt, but I understand it.
So to make myself feel better, I started working on the idea I’ve had for a while that I realize is going to be a huge time sink and silly, but I love it.8 -
I'm here to tell you the best way to learn anything about programming:
- Be 17
- Have a lot of projects to do (if it needs to use frameworks, better)
- Have the worse team
- Internet and a lot of free time to check documentation
PD: I hate teams7 -
My boss keeps trying new tech with important new projects instead of trying the fucking new things with anything other than important shit.
I support this let's try better options approach but cmon, be rational about it.2 -
What really grinds my gears.
When a co-worker gives me feedback from a review of my code be like "you should use if..elseif..else instead of switch, because it performs much better.
in this case performing much better means it is only 25 pikosecond instead of 30 pikosecond in a function which is called apprx. 3 times a month in production *facepalm*
I'm always with "let's get maximum performance from our software", but c'mon... really?!???4 -
"No matter how cool your interface is, it would be better if there were less of it." - Alan Cooper1

Wife and I went to visit her grandparents and when we were at the hotel she would watch lifetime and i would code.
As for Christmas, there's nothing else to do in this town so why not code.6 -
Monday: coffee tastes like dead rat. And I wrote hacks around hacks in legacy code just to get it to last a little longer until the new system can be made.
The coffee left a better taste than my commit.1 -
Today is international programmers day and I found devrant stickers in my postbox. Could it be any better?2
-
So I just removed Facebook on my phone as a way to detach myself from the app since it was taking over my life, I think I'm gonna be better in the end...maybe...3
-
Lesson I learnt the hard way today: ticket every fucking task (including admin) to:
A. Cover your arse (if the tickets are not ready because they haven't given us enough information, push back on it before committing too much effort to doing it)
B. Better deliverable (what you output will probably be better quality because you worked out the requirements upfront + you know the audience)
C. You have something to show management when they want to try and overwork you some more4 -
I feel JS has taken over...
The good.
Easy to learn, thus everyone knows it
The bad.
Everyone knows it, so npm has disgusting code that's used in prod.
Npm itself is still an unstable mess at times.
No one knows what it is to be a good programmer .
Dozens of frameworks every year since everyone thinks they can make it a bit better.
Classes still suck , no interfaces !6 -
Bro, that code u call well written, would look better if it was encoded in base64
Damn, u look like the guy at github who thought it would be a good idea to sell to microsoft.
You are an insult to anyone who codes... or thinks4 -
Co-worker: Why are you deleting this piece of code?
Me: It's deprecated and it can be made in a better way. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing
Also me: OH SHIT THE ENTIRE PROJECT IT'S RUINED4 -
When you open another persons function to see if there’s an obvious way to get better performance out the the query on to close it and walk away for some coffee and wish you never looked.
If I look at this monster any longer I’m going to be forcing myself not to rewrite it from scratch.1 -
To anyone asking for tips and tricks to start programming or become good at it, here is your ultimate golden advice: learn how to google and stop asking stupid questions like this before doing a quick research.
Reasons why:
1. You will most likely to learn better if you do your own research before asking for help. Even if you can't solve problem, you will be better and better at googling over time.
2. It is instant source of information. No need to wait for response (except response from server of course).
3. It takes only YOUR time.
4. Much more possible solutions/answers to your problems/questions.
5. Your quality of life will be improved over time. Not only your dev life but your daily life too.rant stop asking stupid questions how long this tags can be qol i am not your personal teacher programming tips tips11 -
Is it just me or Social media has made everyone philosophers automatically.
Like pretty dumb and hopeless folks you know in real life be posting some smart and motivational shit they copied off of some random site.
Dude get your dumbass off my screen mehn...coming around here giving advice on how to make my life better...have you seen your life lately?
It can't be just me...13 -
Me: "How many MB of files do you want to send me via mail? Maybe it would be better to upload everything..."
Client: "Oh don't worry. It won't be to much. It's just five folders."5 -
I am in love with regex (re in py)!
It is so damn cool!
Unfortunately, Python's find is faster.
But regex is so much better when it comes to complex patterns you would not be able to find with the regular (do you see the pun here? ;)) python's string object find method.4 -
so today we used putty and coded the exercise within the university's server. i wanted to use "tree" to see all the files better cause thats what i normally use. turns out i had to install it.
i type in "sudo apt-install tree"
screen: no root priviledges. <university_login> is not included in root.txt. this will be reported immediately.
i forgot i needed root priviledges smh i just wanted to see my files better XD7 -

I am new to coding, and I am trying to find a platform to host my code. Should I choose GitLab.com or GitHub.com. Maybe the better question is: Will my code be as accessible on GitLab as it is on GitHub?17 -
I’m a long time Objective-C and Swift developer...I’ve been asked to “research” a project using React Native.
It felt dirty to be writing an iOS app using JavaScript.
I’m still not sure why and how React Native is better/faster than native Swift.
Someone change my mind...11 -
"Couldn't have written it better myself"
"You might be Taylor Swift because damn you commit often"
"These commit messages are so helpful i could find my way through the Paris catacombs with them"
"Damn we might need to open-source this... How are people living without it??"
"It would be interesting to see if everyone feels as comfortable with this UI as i do"
"Doesn't matter how long this takes, just do it the way you do it." -
Started learning PHP bcuz @dfox loves it. Why not me?
(instantly)
WHY IS THERE SO MANY -> SIGNS???????
IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE AN ARROW AT ALL!!!!!!!!
IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST --> TO LOOK BETTER!!!!!

I know its supposed to be the same since it is built on Electron. But vs code looks waaay better on a Mac than it does on windows. I think its funny.7
-
I'm not qualified to say anything here, I'm a junior as well, but something general that I picked up:
Not everything needs to be object oriented.
Writing 5 functions and calling it a day is often much better than needing 13 classes and 4 interfaces.5 -
People use this to argue why node is better. I instead use it to show why node sucks. More is less. Be ready for 3gb node_modules.12
-
Fucking kill me. I've just agreed to make a shitty fucking app that would be better as a Webpage, using shitty fucking technologies I don't understand, to do a thing that would be better handled by a third party.
You know why? The guy who asked me to do it is a good friend, and I'm the "best (only) code monkey" he knows. FUCK MY LIFE.
At least I'm getting payed7 -
fucked up my hand, spent entire work coding like on a typewriter.
for those who want to know, dropped coffee dripper on my hand, full of hot water. it was a first degree burn thankfully, water wasn't that hot. hurt like hell at first, but it's much better already. by monday I'll be ready to be fully exploited for my work again 👍16 -
Why do people think it is weird to have job (programming) also be your hobby?!?
I get annoyed with this kind of people, if I like what I do, and have spent infinite amount of hours enjoying while learning, I think it is normal to have job as your hobby. Or even better phrasing, it is normal to have hobby as your job!!!4 -
Today I realized that a project that Ive worked on for years is now redundant and will probably be scrapped after my own new and more effective process hits production.
Im happy about that, no matter how good and hours spent. I made something better to replace it. This must be what finding a New gf after divorce feels like.1 -
Reads horrible code
Opens DevRant to rant about it
Reads some stories
Ok, better mood, I can continue working now.
What was my planned rant about again? Ah, it can't be that bad.
Goes back to the code: Oh no, it is that bad...1 -
American Express is proud to be the official card for Universal Orlando. It also uses Windows XP. WHAT IS THIS? WHAT ALTERNATE DIMENSION AM I LIVING IN? Meh, still better than Windows 10.1

Question for the old timers: is it possible to work as a dev for the rest of your life and be happy?
.
.
.
Does it get any better or is dev burnout baked into the business model of every company?
The CEO flat out admitted it was exactly that where I'm at a few weeks ago 😞16 -
That job you thought you may not be a good fit, you end up at.
Sometimes as developers we doubt ourselves because we set higher bars for ourselves to learn more and try and build better solutions and share them with everyone.
You are almost as good as you need to be and you are going to be getting better, as long as you keep hitting the road towards your main goal.
But look at it this, isn't it the best of scientific communities?
Everyone is trying to improve and share more and make the ecosystem richer.
And open-source, fucking open-source, if there is a God, then he inspired the moral of open-source...
Anyway, congratulations for being among the best of scientific communities and damn I appreciate'yall!!1 -
*lunch time*
Designer: we want to put these graphs on the landing page.
Me: ok, well they are pretty simple I can recreate them in about an hour with JS, and they will look better and be inter active...
PM: we don't have time for that just use the images from the mock up
Me: ok...
*5hrs & dozens of emails later...*
PM: the graph doesn't look quite right, can we just build it in code so it looks better? Oh and we need to have it to the client to review by end of day...

Best password manager?
I usually use the post-it-jutsu art to save my passwords.
But I think that when you have too much passwords, there should be a better way to store your info.20 -
I seriously cannot stress how important it is to build good reliable tests. Especially regression testing.
I am crying inside over the amount of time I've lost in my integration hell.
Seriously stupid shit that should have been tested but never did because I was too fucking lazy. Don't be me. Don't put yourself in the hell I'm in. Be better.1 -
If we made computers out of Fry's transistors, it would cost a couple billion dollars. These better be insanely deluxe.1

Today's finished projects :
Mini vacuum cleaner:
Works. Just need better patles to be really effective.
Portable lighter wire solderer :
Busted.
Works but the flame must be always on. Takes time to heat. Good for a tight spot and you can buy the tools for it anywhere.
Many if the coil is more open... I'll check on beta 2 (not quitting yet)4 -
My favorite thing about developing on a windows machine is hearing that it would be "so" much better if I was a using a Mac... at least I can play games on my system. *single tear*13

I watched some of markipliers videos back when I watched yt
I felt down and like I wasn't giving my best and stuff
Searched for "markiplier inspiration"
Marks video "believe in yourself" is just that
Inspirational af
Say what you want about him, I guess there are people who think he's about the money or stuff, but no matter how you look at it he is a good guy.
He makes you laugh when you need it (if you get the idea of watching his videos)
He has a kind heart, he is a fucking inspiration on himself, inspiration in person.
Comparing myself to myself, I still think I can do better, but that's also what he encourages, set your own goals and just try to be a bit better than yourself
Only compare yourself to your past self.
I may not be as great as I want to be, but I am a lot fucking better than I was a year ago.
And that's what it's all about.
I'm gonna try a bit harder as I go, I wanna BE BETTER as he says, I am going to be fucking better.
It won't be instant, but I'll try.
I hope some one who reads this crap will get inspired a bit as well.
Believe in yourself, and know that others believe in you as well.

I appreciate if someone explains this to me:
Designers ask that we put three images in a grid layout on an Android device so that they can compare which image looks better, and guess what is changed in theses three images: font size changes one point in each image.
My question is: Is this normal? Designers need to see it on a screenshot to be able to decide which fits better?9 -
i really wish Python would not have the presence it has on Machine Learning. I can think of a handful of languages that would be better suited for it and even though I don't hate Python it has a lot of things that just make me say uuuuuuugh when writing it. It al comes down from this: treating syntactic whitespace in a special way is fucking retarded.11

Upon deleting a file,
Filename too long. Delete file permanently?
*just windows things*
Maybe I'm not that well informed but wouldn't the option of allowing user to rename it or removing excess characters from filename be a better option?9 -
Finally, after 42 days of in development, I can proudly say my game reached Alpha stage. All core mechanics are in place. I hope I'll be able to say the same thing for Beta in next 6 weeks too!
To be honest, I could do it better, but I didn't had much time.11 -
Oh f*ck you Google. You can't tell me you don't collect my data (which option I selected) but ask me to answer surveys to make my ads better. It can't be more obvious...5

New programmer who just pick up Python be like , C is shot , is bad , python better blablabla....
Why anyone hate C so much? I personally use C for Embedded Programming, for hardware or is better compare to using python for my case.
I love python , but I love C more. Because without C the rest don't exist. Right?
So stop hating on C. Because you might use it someday.17 -
Even better... When your trying to fix something, but the fix was something you thought at the very start but thought "it can't be that".

Is anyone making more money than what they're spending, saving up and having time to spend on a side project/hobby?
I really like programming, but I also want to be able to do other things. It appears that it can be a job that can make one comfortable financially to be able to afford to do other things. Way better than working for McDonald's or some other job.
Is anyone doing this now? Or is everyone working all the time and always stressed??3 -
Anyone here use atom? I tried switching to it from sublime, gave it a solid 2 weeks but had to give up on it. Just painfully slow, regularly taking 5-10 seconds to open a work project and let me start working on it and would continue to be slow whilst working.
Back to sublime now, so much better...21 -
I dunno if I should have but I told my clients their video they are having made is shit (not exactly like that)
And that it would likely drive people away and we shouldn't put it on the site if it's going to be like that
80s TV animation is better seriously.1 -
With all M$ buying GitHub thing i really hope some good things will come out of it like:
- Better version control inside Visual Studio.
- Microsoft making its projects more open source, since it now has an official platform for itself.
- Faster and better service from GitHub since there is now a much bigger budget for servers and other things.
But there are some things that i think are worth thinking about:
- Will this be another one of Microsoft's paid services?
- Will there be "intergration" into the Office apps along Skype, Word and others?
- Will the privacy policy change?
Most likely, none of the bad things happen but me being paranoid as i am, I'd prepare. I always try to be optimistic and just ignore it for now until Microsoft start doing things.1 -
Find yourself a manager/leader who knows a bit about software engineering. Better still, find one who is/was a software engineer him/herself.
Because software engineering is a form of art. A leader who doesn't understand your art won't be able to properly appreciate it.
They won't be interested in how and why you make/do something. They're only interested in how fast can you get it done.1 -
Ah good ol' refactoring summer.
*Me starts refactoring spaghetti bolognese*
- Hurrah everything can be generic and so much better. I'll just do this and this and this and this, oh and this also needs to be reworked cuz of this.
8 hours later.
- it wasn't that bad!
$ git status
- oh god
$ dotnet test
- welp.... I need something to do tomorrow.4 -
The developer of this app should post their technology stack so we could rant about how faster and better in general it would be if they used something else! :D8

Show 10 lines of code to a dev.
Dev: It could be improved here and there, it can be optimized way better etc.
Show 5000 lines of code to dev.
Dev: Looks good!5 -
This book isn't at all what I thought it was going to be. I hoped it would be patterns and practices to writing better code...it's more like a philosophical Chicken Soup for the Developer's Soul. Self-care for syntax geeks.
And by that merit, it's actually quite good. -
I find it very strange and telling when people tell me that a dev shouldn't "re-invent the wheel", "roll your own" or "leave it to the experts" while simultaneously promoting substandard own-rolled projects by other people that simply got popular.
Kind of a strange elitist double standard that encourages a bad mindset of "I can't be as good as them" and it's toxic.
If you wanna make your own framework / package / etc, just do it, it might even be better.7 -
I'm loving the bootcamp I'm in so far. I know I won't be a whiz kid once I'm done, but it gives me a great start for my career change! You'll only be as successful as the work you put into coding. Practice makes better as time goes on!2

I've been using git mindlessly for a while now. But this week I've been working on getting a better understanding of how it's working.
There's a lot there that exists, it's nice to be doing it properly and not destroying branches and not understanding why.1 -
Hello devs, I need help from database devs.
The company where I'm interning is a non IT company, so they planned to migrate to a SQL Database from their older MS Access Database.
Since I'm the only IT intern, I'm up against the major devs and hot shots from where my company outsources IT solutions.
They suggested SQL Express.
I have a meeting tomorrow with them, please help me so that I can get better results for my company.
Basically I have to question them about how their decision works better for our firm and why didn't we go for MySQL Enterprise Edition or anything which is much better and cheaper and such critical questions.
Please help me.
The Database would be used to store information about the products manufactured and their parts' history so that in future if there's a problem with the product, it can be looked up in the database so that there can be further replacement or repair processes.10 -
Manager was a douche again.
I mean not that it's anything new but this guy seriously has an issue with being respectful to coworkers and me. Has this pompous, I'm better than thou attitude. It completely ticks me off.
Guy needs an attitude adjustment stat. As a leader I expect better. I get you've been in the industry 20 years. I get it, but you don't have to be an asshole about it. I'm doing my best, I may code a little slower, but I'm not fucking stupid.1 -

One day AI will handle these robocallers automatically. And then it will just be GAN style robocallers vs robosecretaries training against each other to become better and better at fooling each other.
And then suddenly, one day: skynet.

If I had to name one attribute that dominates the software engineering ecosystem, it would be “arrogance” especially among young programmers. I think software engineering would be a much better place to work if people were more empathetic than being ginormous assholes trying to have a leg up over all their peers. Collaboration is much more rewarding than competition. It feeds your soul and feels a lot more natural.
Collaboration over Competition.
Have a peaceful day at work guys!5 -
I run my first program in Java on Linux... I feel like most powerful person in the World! xD
I still have some complications but it will not be better probably :)2 -
i hate myself for having a better idea to write a procedure or a function after getting it done. *comments the first set of code, just to be sure.*1

Dear devRant,
when my ++'s finally reach 2^32-1, or let it be 2^64-1, the next inc. will better make it -2^32 or -2^64 because tHAT IS HOW IT WORKS AND THAT IS WHAT I WOULD EXPECT4 -
!rant
How about a feed where people can ask for help?
I know there are sites such as stack overflow for things like that, but I find devrant's community to be a lot more friendly and just better overall.
Also I believe it would be kinda funny if the questions would not be required to be 100% dev related.4 -
Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Making mistakes is the only way to learn from them and grow. F*ck sh*t up and build it back up again but better. Fall seven times stand up 8!

I love Android development, but I HATE make individual strings for each word in my apps. It's so tedious! There's gotta be a better way than telling myself, "Oh crap you better be a good boy and use Google's 'best practices' and not hardcode all your strings. Who knows you might make this app translatable in Portuguese someday and it'll be easy then!". I HATE it!!2

Beautiful is better than ugly.
Explicit is better than implicit.
Simple is better than complex.
Complex is better than complicated.
Flat is better than nested.
Sparse is better than dense.
Readability counts.
Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules.
Although practicality beats purity.
Errors should never pass silently.
Unless explicitly silenced.
In the face of ambiguity, refuse the temptation to guess.
There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.
Although that way may not be obvious at first unless you're Dutch.
Now is better than never.
Although never is often better than *right* now.

Official Release of Meme Bot is here, Though it's a meme bot, it can be used as any image bot, since it googles the text. For better results, give proper description.
The script runs on a cron job, checking for mentions every minute, so, it will reply within 1 minute.

Getting cooped at home to a avoid COVID is annoying because it got me remembering my ex. I hate myself for shutting down a few days thinking of him. If only there is an "Empty trash" button for emotions. Finally I get better today. I resume studying for work and target to pass the certification. Strive to be better!3
-
Am I the only one bothered by the way devRant ( and to be fair also Twitter) previews images?
It just kinda crops some unknown up front amount of edges. It's annoying in and of itself, but also directs viewer focus to some arbitrary part of the picture, and you can't unsee it even after opening the whole thing...
Is there really no better way to handle the issue of size? How can that be a good UX ??1 -
Imagine a world that only consists of humans with a developer mindset . Would it be a better or worse world?
Aside from all the food and production problems, let's say we automated it all.5 -
Started working with React Native a week ago because of work, and I just hate it. I know it has better performance then, lets say Ionic, but holy shit its a torture for me to work in it. I never was, and will be a fan of React, so imagine working with it for 8 hours a day..2

Product Owner.
Not Product Liaison.
Not Product Buddy.
Not Product Suggester.
Own it. Bend it to your will. Make it better or sunset it and build it again. But don’t be a wet noodle and say “I’m just following orders”. You give the orders, you own it.3 -
So at work, there is this class/model thing that's for storing translated strings. It also supports n-level nested macros, cascading lookup (e->d->c->b->a->blank), and I've added transforms too. The code is a bloody mess and very inefficient (legendary dev's code), but it's useful.
You call methods with a symbol representing one of the strings, and it does... whatever you ask, like return text, booleans, expand macros and submacros, pass in data to interpolate, etc.
But I just learned something today.
Its `.html` method... doesn't support html. In fact, calling it strips out all html, takes whatever is left, and attempts to convert that back into html. Because that makes so much sense. So, if you have an html string? Don't call html on it.
Also, macros use the same <angle brackets> as html tags, and macro expansion eats unknown macros, so... you can't mix html and macros, meaning you cannot inject values into your markup. That's a freaking joy to work around. (You end up writing a parser every time.)
So no, if you have an html string, you need to get the raw data out and handle it yourself. Don't reach for that shiny .html method; it'll just ruin your day.
It's the little things that make my day so terribly long.rant it really isn't so bad principle of most surprise poor design but it could be ever so much better8 -
I’m running 1.5km every day for two weeks already. Anxiety still strikes sometimes. Depression is measurably better, but it was getting better months ago when I started taking fluvoxamine, so I can’t attribute this to running alone.
Running will help me in another way though: my mental health will definitely be going through the roof when I look in the mirror and see the beautiful, albeit scarred, slender body I posessed before it all started.8 -
Kinda wanna say my teammates are incompetent morons but the truth is I'm not much better
So saying that about them would be admitting it about myself4 -
I started to teach my partner some programming basics (web, just html and some css for starters), since they asked me to. So far we haven’t killed each others, so it’s going much better than expected.
Also, it seems to be a very common misconception that one needs to be a special breed of person to be able to understand and write some code.7 -
It may be wierd. But one of my hobbies is to check top charts of playstore and observe changes in ranking.
Things I notice that except popular social apps most apps are very poor. There are better alternative available in store but dunno why only these poor apps make it to top.6 -
Never had a truly bad experience with a designer but once one mentioned offhand that the unique keys that we were using to secure access to sensitive information should be only 4 characters long because it looks better that way...

Why do people hate jQuery so much? 30KB is basically nothing in times of modern bandwidth and for me CSS selectors are mich more readable than the Vanilla JS functions.
Im not judging and would be happy if someone explains it to me or shows better alternatives.4 -
Why the fuck can't ls have the size listings like Windows' DIR command?
Why can't there be a simple command scripting solution, like BATCH, without it being as potentially complicated as SH to set up?
Goddammit, even though Windows sucks dick, they did do some things better...20 -
Sometines after a long day of having clients continually find edge cases that break the code makes me want to be like.
"Hey! Having the app work well was never part of the scope for the project, just that it would work ish."
But I know better. -
Shitty co-workers. From bad management to lazy colleagues I've had it all, and all of it pushes me to be better than they are.1

Given how precise developers have to be with their code to get it to run, you'd think they'd be better spellers when they write blog posts. 🤔1

I wanted to talk about the right job.
In my previous job I did not feel happy, the management was weird, the salary was low.
For a time I was thinking, I need to get better and do more and I will have a better salary and management will be more lenient towards me.
After a few years, I got an offer to join a much bigger company with a bigger salary and better benefits.
I joined them of course. And it turns out in some places you just do not fit in or the company just wants something that is not realistic and always will be unhappy with you.
In my current company, I have never felt better working, the team is awesome and tasks are challenging but doable, and they appreciate my skills and speed of work.
TL;DR:
If you do not feel good in your company, leave for some other company, most likely it's not you, but its the job that sucks.2 -

@dfox Wouldn't it be better if there were limited amount of push notifications if user haven't seen the previous ones yet? I commented on some popular rant and when I got to a stable connection, the phone vibrated like crazy for at least 15s :D It was awesome btw.1

Ability to understand all machine learning models to modify code and those models directly and create better ones every time.
I would take existing ml model, modify it by hand to create better one, win some multimillion dollars competitions and make them open source.
Eventually all recommendation systems, text to speech, speech to text, music generation, movies generation etc would be opensource.
This would either destroy or boost all modern economy but for sure it would make harm to corporations and make them cry.
That would be fun to see.6 -
Uhmm. How do you guys write your resume? I mean, there seems to be a lot of ways and taboos on writing one, some say it shouldn't be more than 2 pages. But in some domain, the longer the better. As a software developer how should it look? Some are project-oriented others opt for work-company-experience-oriented.5
-
People really have short term memories. It seems everyone has suddenly forgotten the nonexistent lack of privacy at Zuck’s platforms.
To be fair, I think competition is good for consumers and Musk has been doing a very terrible job of managing Twitter.
But not having most platforms of social communication controlled by one company would be better.5 -
So it's 5 am and a random Snapchat adds me. Of course I know it's a bot. I tend to answer these because i'm curious of how clever the ai has become in these scams. Still hasn't improved in like 5 years. Here I am telling this ai how shitty it is at it's job and telling it how it could be better by using deep learning to copy the way others talk and actually be convincing and then I think to myself, "well damn, why don't I just build a better ai." Seriously thinking about it. Ended up leaving the chat after telling the ai to inform it's lizard overlords I am for hire if they want a better trap.

Wk88 i basically see "I'm a beta that belittles myself, because everybody else seems to be so much better than me.."
While I certainly know how it feels, that mantra & mindset will lead to void or null.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy and life's a bitch that'll keep ya down if you let it.
It's gonna be rough, but ye gotta stop calling yourself inadequate and start working on honing your skills.
No great feat happens over night, it takes practice and dedication.1 -
@dev-rant @dfox @trogus

I think it would be better for the development of of the app to include a feedback/bug option.
Bug-> I changed my password on a different phone but the current phone didn't ask for the updated password, and logged in.7 -
My uncle wants a website for his company. Should I do it in Wordpress, or do you know any other, better CMS? Node.js would be awesome :)15

I had a config option where some shit would either be dimmed down or switched off. I called them "fade-out" and "hard-off" in UI and documentation.
Luckily, it dawned on me in time that I'd better rename the latter option to "cut-off".2 -
I don't know if my boss just wants me to learn how to use a new internal deployment process or just likes giving me unnecessary low-value work to take up time...
I could and have just copied the program via SFTP and unzip it to set it up....
(This is a testing and does not need to be in production...)
I have better things I could be doing and just want to get this done and closed but ... -
I really want to decouple classes from each other, but I also want to decouple them from any specific DI container, so this is what I came up with. Factory methods passed as arguments.
Is this bad? how would it be better done?2 -
We interviewed some candidates for a dev position some weeks ago and, knowing the environment isn't that challenging (at least for me) I voted against the better curriculums because I know they would be frustrated fast, I said that. But I didn't say it was because it's shit here... Of course.... I really just want the good devs to be better then they can be here.... What do you think?3

Not sure what's better on Friday:
Fix the bugs and push it to prod so manager will be happy.
Or sit there like a dumb fuck and wait for Monday before touching the code2 -
I've seen far worse people doing what I'm doing, applying terrible practices and still being valued af.
Even if I do smth wrong after doing all the research and alternatives' analysis I know I'll do a proper post-mortem RCA, document it and learn from it, as a result I'll make a better choice to fix the problem and I'll know better next time.
I think I'm alright compared to them. So I don't wory about being an impostor.
Learning by good examples is a good approach. Learning by bad ones might be even better. The "good ones" are yet to fail and be replaced by better (or worse) ones. The "bad ones" are already failing and you can learn WHY you should not be doing it like that and HOW should you do instead to solve the problem.
Learning from good examples only works well if you know the back-story, all the WHYs and HOWs. People usually don't :) -
I am amazed this is still going.
I remember Google showing results for this for most technical questions. My experience encountering a paywall.
Stack Exchange may be very unfriendly to use, but it is miles better than this.2 -

Anyone know a good open source web page builder? If there's a laravel integration would be better.
Got a client needs this very soon!
Sort of just assumed someone did it, but yeah, like there's lots, I see wink, grapejs, etc. But there's gotta be one perfect for my needs.
Thanks!8 -
I just lost a comment and had to rewrite it because I clicked a millimetre under the "post" button.
On new posts, the text remains in the box and can be edited the next time, but not on comments.
Perhaps I should get used to navigating to the "post" button with the tabulator key (↹).
It would be even better if CTRL+Enter did send.4 -
So basically.... you should make the implementation of this wireframe .... which may change in the nearest future but we don't know it yet, so better you start it anyway because it may even be the final one.

How well can bash be used on windows?
i've used it a bit now and it seems to work really well, but i'm wondering if it's possible to efficiently and fully work on it. Are there any drawbacks or missing functionallity that is a must for development but not implemented (yet) in bash ?
i'll be forced to work on windows and i'm wondering which option is better - VM or bash?12 -
I would like to learn how to better automate workflows. I find it fascinating that you can control one program with another. Especially GUI apps. I have automated apps before to reduce human error and boring data entry work. It would be amazing to take this to a new level. Perhaps even automate specific programming work.
Machines programming machines would be fascinating as well. -
It would be a pleasure for me if you guys would give me a rate for a website ive just uploaded to the live server. It's responsive but german. If you have better options, for some functionalities, i am open for better ideas.

What are your thoughts on documenting developer (local/dev) functional testing? Should we be trusted that we've tested our shit and it works? Or should we provide proof? Are we better to provide proof to protect ourselves?3
-
So I have been using IntelliJ for two weeks now. Still failing to see how this is superior to Eclipse. It has crashed or locked up multiple times, makes dependency management needlessly complicated and the UI just plain doesn’t make sense. I don’t see anything here that makes this software worth $60 per month when my free software does everything yours does, but better.
Everyone on my team who is being forced to use it hates it and the money our company is paying for it could be used for better things like toilet paper with more than one ply.4 -
"Guys best idea to fuc... help the javascript developers. We make a framework with its own events/states and it will not change inputs or anything unless specified in state. Clearly easier to test... I mean how hard can it be?
Even better our framework will be so fuc... Helpfull that they will put an plugin so they can make it work... I mean improve...
Did i say we just throw the html and put everything in our own butchered way? Even better remember that easy

O yeah and the state must be immutable objects... What immutable means? Who the fu... I mean its easy...
And we make our own virtual dom because... Fu browsers"

So, right now we upload production code by means of FTP.
I said it would be better to use continuous deployment using Docker, but they said it was overkill (I work at a small company).
Because manually uploading by means of FTP is so much better right...6 -
When did you scrap your project and start over, and why?
I'm working on a second project at my company.
But as the project got longer and initially unplanned features started to pile up, the software has become a total mess and a pile of conversion layers for all sorts of I/O.
I'm starting to believe that it'd be better to learn from our mistakes and start over with a better plan, if it means we'll be able to achieve performance and stability improvements.
So, what was it like scrapping your project and starting over?2 -
So, I thought that I would simply be able help improve MacOS Mojave... I thought wrong. They just yesterday rolled out version 2 of the public meta, but it is absolutely horrible. Most Unstable operating system ever to be made. The windows public betas were a lot better. I can’t even install virtual box...3

So finally I could find a part-time job! Better yet, I'll be paid as a full time worker! It's a shame it isn't tech related, I'll be taking care of a small firm's finances. But hey, I got a small office that, as my employer told me, I can use outside of work, for whatever I want! It's been a good year so far!1

"We need you to write a script to consolidate changes on different pages down to a single page. By the way, we're going to randomly make changes that will break your script, not tell you, and then complain to you when it doesn't work." -- That would be better than not saying anything and doing it anyway.

Not a rant!
But I want to know how much do programmer make? (Money wise) and would it be better to be a freelancer or to work for a company? What are some pros and cons for working in a company and for being a freelancer.5 -
I started sending my resume everywhere so whoever accepts my person first and makes final offer the better or worse ( didn’t decided yet ) for them.
Probably better... I hope lol.
Let the fate decide... it never worked so I hope to not be disappointed also this time and got fucked up et the end.4 -
few hours ago i ranted about how my company won’t use new software, now i’ve written 4 pages on a new organization/communication system and boy it better be convincing or else that was a HUGE waste of time3

Argument exception message convention: is it better to specify what is allowed or what is not allowed? Eg: "value must be a positive integer" or "value can not be negative"?2

I understand devs find it hard to say "I dont know" because our job is about not knowing then knowing through our own accord, but damn, when you dont know. Let that be known, you may be directed or helped. Both you and the task requester will have a good time. And better expectations set.
Say it with me... "I dont know, but-will-look-into-it"
You might hear something nice like "here are some pointers"3 -
So many people on devRant rave about iPhones because of the better security and privacy, but the new iPhone X starts at a whopping $1000! Sure, you don't have to get the X, but that's what everybody wants.
You'll say "well, I'm willing to pay more if it means better security because that's just the way it is." It doesn't have to be. It would be much more beneficial to actually fight and take a stand for better security and more privacy than just put up with outrageous prices.1 -
I am thinking of buying a new desktop.
Would it be better if I built one myself or bought a prebuilt one?17 -
Boss!!!
Boss isn't a person.
It's not a name.
It's a feeling.
It's an emotion.
It's something that you are afraid of even in ur dreams.
It's something that pushes you, shouts at you, criticises you, shouts at you again, but at the end he gives you appreciation, money and fame(sometimes).
No matter how shitty the pay is, it is something. Better than nothing.
If you don't like it, go to another boss.

What is wrong with Android Studio it used to be better just the sheer number of updates and the gradle build oh the gradle build5

Why devRant is not open source?
I know that it has a Github issue tracker with a awful amount issues.
Wouldn't it be better if people could work on the platform to improve it since most of the devRant users are developers.

We need to create a completely software driven music band. Use AI to learn what people like and adjust over time. So the music becomes "better" as more input is received. It should be complete with VR musicians and VR stages and concerts.
The band name would be: Zero Day1 -
Would the world be a better place if everything was open source? How would it effect the profits of companies and wages of programmers?1

I am working on spring boot jwt project. Ive encoutered a UserDetails class name.
Why is it named UserDetails?? Where the fuck are those details??!! COZ I CANT SEE THEM
Those kind of methods can be found also in other various Services for example LocationService or UserService but none of them is called by developers for example LocationDetailsService. WHAT THE FUCK. Wouldnt it be better to name it UserSecurity???? -
Codeium did 700 autocompletions for me this week. I can see it evolving and getting better. Had deleted it a few months ago and use it again since a few weeks. Much changed. The autocompletion quality is great. It does what Ive would've done based on my project. I use quite consistent naming and it even generates good function names. I consider the autocomplete of codeium a huge success. I didn't use the chat tho, not interested in prompt engineering. I'm faster myself regarding doing it well. It also comes with a nice statistics page and is considered to be better than copilot. Didn't use copilot myself. Anyone else experience with both?6

I finally understand it. Its all about adaptability. The body and the subconsciouses mind is in a continuous adaptation to the environment it lives in. That explains why we always strive for new, better and cooler things, why we never are satisfied with what we have.
Be happy in the current position you are in, be grateful for simply living. It sounds like I'm on drugs or something, but we take such things for granted, appreciate and embrace what you have.2 -

There are good things and bad things every times..
We can't just say if everything is better or worse. Sometimes we want to stay in the present and sometimes in the past.
Things change, for the best and for the worse. We just need to move on or deal with it.
Just live with your time. You can just hope the best or try to make it possible. -

Unless it's literally a startup from scratch. I feel like that proper response to the "design youtube/twitter" question should be: I really hope your product team comes up with better requirement than just design a product, get to it -
Well, this may out my secret identity to devRanters in my area, but I just submitted my first application ever to be a speaker at a local WordPress conference. The title is "The Care and Feeding of Your Web Developer". If you have a wishlist of how you wish working with employers or clients could be better, please comment and I'll work it into my talk. Thanks!
-
If you're working on integrating a 3rd party app, never trust their docs to be fool-proof. Not only are they erroneous, they keep changing too. Better try it and ask questions on their forums, even if it involves a little more effort and time.
-
Ubuntu's search is so bad that when I'm looking for a file by its name it is more convenient asking Google where that file resides on my machine than using the builtin serach itself (and Windows is not better in any way to be fair)7
-
HFS, MacBooks standard file system is the answer to that every question asking "what if you don't design well/ how bad can it get."
How can a bloody file system not be case sensitive.
I know you want to be different from *nix
But there would have been better ways1 -
I hate it when clients add the brief mid project, yet my own system I’m creating, I’m doing the same. I’m adding three new features for everyone one that I complete! I keep telling myself but it’ll be even better.
-
I am thinking to make a SoundCloud clone as per project for learning purpose. Can you suggest the better way to proceed.what is the best stack and how music uploading and streaming should be handled. I want to do it hard way.1
-
I simplified 7 functions down to a blob because it was truly unreadable and fragmented. As I did it, I thought there was no way I did it right. This can't be the logic. Nope. It is.
Yeah, the formatting could be better. End of the shift so that's a tomorrow thing.10 -
I got a Samsung A71 from job. What changes would you do to make it less "Samsungy"? Like, I like my OnePlus, but the Samsung is arguably better, so it's be nice if I didn't disgust it.5
-
Aye i know we got a few musicians here, what daw do you recommend for a beginner? Im tryna use lmms right now and its not bad but there might be better ones. Main direction would be dubstep. Windows is fine and id keep it free or under $50 if possible.3

Hey folks,
So, rust.
Has anyone any ideas on a decent way to learn it? I feel of all the languages I've ever looked into it has the least about of resources of any discernable quality available. Even the docs can be a but dodge. Would I be better off learning pure c and then migrating? (as I imagine is the pathway of the standard rust user)
Any other recommendations would be deadly!8 -
why does microsoft products require so many accounts, google does it better IMO.
`this is intended to be a angry rant but I just can't put it in better words.`4 -
!rant does anyone know what sustainable computing is? I googled it but I don't think I understand much..like, if I took this as my major for uni then what will my potential careers be like? Is it a better choice then software engineering? 😕😕😕3
-
Omg click once applications are such a royal fucking pain in my ass.
Everything has to be code signed and every manifest much match and if you change anything you better hope to the gods you can use mage and resign that shit and that it will work
Can we just like, stop using it thank you god I hate it2 -
Q: Why is windows better than linux?
A: Cos when you download zoom on windows, you can be pretty darn sure that it will work without you having to debug stupid permission issues. Linux would be dead if web browsers weren't a thing.19 -
If we are able to use our cars for 20 years, shouldn't smartphones and web browsers be the same way?
Even though it is better to update software, old versions should not be excluded because otherwise a digital dark age comes closer.14 -
I am doing a small application using C++ as a side project to learn C++ Developement. It would be better if i have a small UI . Will ncurses be okay ? Does it have any utility now ? Is there a better way ? Please keep in mind i am a beginner in terms of application developement..1

Since I am working with a pretty large codebase at work and also some ugly parts I do not fear to look into a fat ass open-source repo and get into it (fix something, ..). Never let the fear of it be your excuse.
But if the code looks like golumn, rewrite that shit yourself and do better. -
Scala is a better TypeScript. Feels so easy and natural to switch. Too bad it mainly targets Java devs. Scala.js is not nearly as popular as it should be.3
-
I always work too much in bursts. Long days of intense work when I’m deep into something, skipping lunch and breaks. Then short days when I take it easy. Would probably be better to work more evenly.3
-
Fucking visual studio and waiting 5 fucking minutes just to find out It didn't work and I need to change it and setup with another fucking 5 minutes
There must be a better way???, -
It should be at night (after 9/10pm; I work better at night anyway), headphones on, music blasting (heavy metal nowadays), alone, preferably no distractions, but now that I am at home for xmas holidays I have to be on the lookout for my parents calling me. When I go back to uni I can eliminate that variable from this equation and so I should be in the zone for longer. Hopefully 😅
-
Let's be real a second, hiDPI and multiple DPI display support on GNU/Linux (xorg) sucks.
It apparently has better support through Wayland but I hate gnome3 (does KDE implements Wayland? don't really care I don't like it too, way too heavy)2 -
That moment when you quit a job and your colleagues give you a "Clean code" copy. Doing it at joining would be way better.
-
update on the Lenovo shit laptop.
getting a new custom made laptop with better specs sadly had to give away 2gb video ram but I can live with that it also comes with a third disk so let the O's recommendations come.
specs will be in a comment3 -
There better be a special place for the frontend dev I just replaced. All this absurd html, angular and css obsolete code everywhere 😩
Who other than none-devs uses bootstrap? And who makes a layout, using only 11 columns and shifting it 1 to the side? Whyyyy5 -
My dream project I already built but I would like to make it better so it's still a ongoing project.its a self help medication system for over the counter medication (panado herbal remedies etc).pick an ailment and it will give recommendations that will print out the receipt.this system can be put into pharmacies.
-
When people use my life as a basis to judge that theirs is better, should I be proud of it, or feel sad about it 😅😅6
-
Hmm am learning mean stack.. so far it is good... But can anyone help me in reviewing my code. Like am doing self learning but I guess my code can be improved with better standards or approaches.. Just curious if can found any help here :)8
-
Why can't protocols like IPFS or Odysee go mainstream? Would it be better to have a fully HTTP-based system that mimics Netflix and uses React?17
-
If we really try to reinvent the wheel, and if we did that successfully, I bet it will be 2x better than at least all the unfancy stuff in the dev-market
-
Is it just me or is devrant a little bit slow to load rants. If so why is that? What should be done to make it better?6
-
Any apps you think could be better... Like tinder messenger I think is terrible... I mean it takes 5-6 hours to build a better chat system then that...
What are they doing.
Ho the extra mile1 -
Merry xmas to all
Witnessed the first ever world cup won by my country via cinema.
It can't be any better -
I can't be the only person who feel that public/online education courses for programming is terrible. As far as I've seen it just teaches people bad practices. You're better off reading on your own.7
-
Bollocks. My headset just snapped.
Better hope I can find the duct tape, or I'll be doing client calls all day with one side of the headphones flopping all over the place...
Also, any headset recommendations? G430 was the one I had. Enjoyed it, until it broke.5 -
Never try learning everything, better learn one thnig and get really good at it... And also: do only, what u like doing (xcept 4 job)... Sure, evthing will be fine!

I was hoping it would be possible in a big international company to work (as a software developer) on my own laptop (MacBook Pro) - cause of better parameters = better performance = better efficiency. After I got hired, I was told that it is not possible to bring my own laptop. So I was given an old DELL laptop with Windows + a lot of security stuff in it from the company. The poor DELL is so slow - that even a single commit into the branch takes about 2 minutes because of the security stuff : -O ...I am soooo disappointed... :[ .... On the other hand, by working at home on my MacBook in compare with that DELL I feel about it like I work with some super ultra alien technology from the future :D what a feeling <35

I'm building a web application, and I'm currently working on the account registration code, and I could use some design advice. In your opinion, is it better to say "username/email address in use" when one or both are in use, or would it be best to specify whether the username or email address are in use? Why?1
-
Where do you place your desktop tower so it doesn't suck up dust. Per a previous rant, @sunfishcc was right there is a vent at the bottom and probably a very bad idea to place it on cardboard.... Or carpet. But what would be the best?
Would putting it on top of plastic be better?5 -
Xamarin vs Flutter
I already know c# but I’m thinking it’s better to learn Dart + Flutter than carry on with Xamarin (only ever worked on the back end parts of Xamarin so not familiar with the layout syntax and the ui side of it).
Xamarin seems to be so clunky (to be fair more the dev environment than the end result), even on a powerful machine it’s a pig to work on.
Our project uses Xamarin forms, without any extra MVVM framework such as Prism and it just seems a bit shit from what front end code I’ve seen (could be the devs).
So given that I’m not sure that holding out for MAUI and expecting it to be a silver bullet is a good idea.
Is the UI code for Flutter any cleaner?
Is the dev environment more reliable?
Or is another option better, such as ReactNative or Ionic ?
(Particularly if one of those would let you develop an iOS version without access to a Mac)2 -
It feels good to be an intern. I literally do nothing. Or barely anything.
I know it's not something good but who says no to a big desk and extra monitor?
At least it's giving me a relatively "better" workspace.1 -
In university, would it be better to study civil engineering for my bachelor and then move to computer science for my master, or would it be better to start with computer science in the first place?
With a bachelor in civil engineering I can always go do something else if computer science doesn't turn out, but I fear that it also might be a lot harder (to study). I'd like to hear your advice on this issue.3 -
Please unity devs...
If your going to use visual studio for code development, please change to visual studio code. Idk why but it slightly annoys me. If anyone can explain why visual studio would be better please do.3 -
I was thinking about installing Linux on my laptop and I was reading about the various distros for beginners and I came across Arch Linux, it seems not to be liked by this comunity. Why is it? What distro would be better?8
-
Has anyone ever accepted an offer of employment and then changed their mind and "cancelled it" in the UK?
I have an offer starting 6 months from now and I am worried I might get another better offer in the mean time but I'll be bound to this one since I accepted it...
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.4 -
At times I actually feel like making a group to conquer earth. I think it would probably be better ran than it is now anyway.4
-
Apple better not be slowing down my Ipad Air 2 to save battery because goddamn it costs $300 to fix at my work!!!
-
POCing a neural network thing.
Luckily it's a shallow network, but it's taking a frickin' eternity to train :( -
When a professor asks an expert system of you, but then when u present the design of it he demands it to be dumbed down cause "it is only for learning purposes", and to top it he adds "I don't want you to make a real expert system"......... Note the system must be built based on rules and knowledge and be done only in prolog. The subject is AI 2, we should be learning something better.....4
-
I fucking hate HP UFT a test "IDE" that needs to be tested itself..before thinking of selling it to organizations to help them test their software..awfull crash crappy bitch ass tool I just hate it and what's even worse is that I'm using it to test an eclipse rcp application...feeling a bit better now.
-
So, so far for ending my life, I think it will be opening wrists. It seems the most non painfull way to go.
Better ideas ?5 -
Hey guys. I use the build in terminal of linux and im really confident with it, but i believe there have to be better out there. Any suggestion?4
-
Anybody know anything about this laptop:
https://newegg.com/p/...
I want to upgrade my current rig and want it to be an epic update. However, I found one review and it had a hardware failure.
Is there a better place to buy laptops that have power (GPU, CPU), but don't die from overheating?8 -
There is such a thing called "building wayyyy too many features in the product that 99% of the user base won't even care about"
I think that management does it because of this mentality, "The more features we have, the better our product would be".2 -
It will be better if posting a rant or especially commenting saves the post until submited or cleared. That way you can check to what you are responding. Or whe you search for an image or gif.
-
So this my final year as an IT student, and I need to make a desktop app for the college which is about monitoring and diagnosing network flow and connected hardware, the question is: is there any stuff that can help and will it be better to use a specific language ?3

"I think design would be better if designers were much more skeptical about its applications. If you believe in the potency of your craft, where you choose to dole it out is not something to take lightly." - Frank Chimero

Part-of-a-team...teamwork!

Always fun to watch if you know it, inspirational if you don't.
And if your boss is De Niro, meditate - and better be part of the team. -
https://adventofcode.com/2021
Anyone ? ;p so far I like little code every day not related to work and some of "tasks" are pretty interesting (Ok, I mostly brute force everything, but it can be done so much better!)5 -
Wanted to discuss about this AMP framework by Google. I have developed with it for my company and have been having mixed feelings about it.
On one end, it gives you the power of Google cache, declarative layout and all.
But still, it seems to be too restrictive and filled with bizarre rules that often could have been avoided if they just made guidelines for normal "web pages" to be better and not yet another framework to build "AMP pages".
One more (and probably the biggest) thing. AMP is Open Source... But can it be really considered Open if the biggest player in its development is a single corporation?4 -
Had to refractor and abstract some code into an angular 2 component so it can be reused by another. Well I could have just copied and pasted the code from component 1 to 2, that would have been a lot more faster than making this piece of code separate. The later is better, removes code duplicate and your code reads better.
-
I need to have domainB show the contents of domainsA without redirect. Oh and its WordPress if that makes it worse.
Support just said "You gotta clone the website" but there's gotta be a better way.
It's cloud hosting from HostGator so I don't have access to virtualhosts.6 -
I've been tumbling down the webpack rabbit hole for the better part of the day. Irritable.
I get it to bundle and everything but then I can't access variables that I used to be able to. I'm confused and hungry. -
luasocket decided to provide blocking network primitives to be used in single threaded lua environments. Sure I can overcome it with socket select polling, promises and coroutines. But WTF. It is 2016! Even node.js does it better.
-
Mr .... what are you doing here she asks
Observing court I say
Why must everything be a pointless pageant of idiocy ?
But that's exactly it
You observed court you weren't on trial
Also you got better5 -
Not gonna mention the better world part or what would make it
But would say a nice start is to not be living in a poisoned version of earlier events where people are crazy stupid and gradually disappearing and being replaced5 -
Windows is crap! Linux is better but does not support many important programs. And I think, a good system should be usable just fine without using the Terminal.
So would it be possible to create a 4th big system architecture (Open-Source), which supports Windows Apps & Games without being shitty and without harming their laws?13
