My non techie girlfriend :) <3
-----------
She: Hey I am getting a new phone!
Me: which one?
She: Apple I phone
Me: oh cool!
She: yea I am really excited. I can't wait to have more space on my phone. I can't have anything on my current phone.
Me: yup.
She: new phone will have a lot of storage space. Its going to be 64MB. Imagine all the things I can do with it now.
Me: Hey, the 90's called, they want their storage sizes back.
*hilarious laughter ensues*
Dat iPhone crowd doe. Android 4 life.13 -
My boss literally spends half an hour finger-fucking his phone on the mobile site to find "bugs", that I can't replicate. A combination like: swipe, pinch, landscape, portrait, back pinch, open new tab, close tab, ash cigarette on phone, dunk in toilet, dry, double tap... Aha I've found a bug, there's 0.5 pixel line of space between the bag header and the browser bar.14
-
I gor a problem with my gf, and she asked for space, then i got a new problem in my workplace, i want to kill my boss and my senior mothercuker! FUCK THIS!!!8
-
My client asked me to add **three levels tab bar** to the web page. It takes 40% space of the screen when open on a mobile.
"How much does it cost?" -- she asked
"Just don't tell anyone that I do this job for you." -- I replied1 -
Just had a massive clear out of useless tabs i had open. its been so long since I've seen blank space in my tab bar :')9

As a full time remote employee it gets lonely. Im getting ready to turn my home into a co-working space :
* Plenty of space with tables and couches
* Gigabit Internet backed by enterprise networking gear
* Lots of fresh ground coffee
* Local Kubernetes server !
* dog friendly chill space
* kid friendly play areas during the summer
* Mountain home with backyard hiking trails , wildlife lookout (wild deer live in my back yard), and fireplaces
What else would you want in your co-work space-at-my-place (TM)?12 -
> Get home for lunch, time to get some work done
> Fire up windows to program my keyboard
> WindowsUpdate, fine I can wait
> Reboot, grub rescue - no partition found
> Fire up a live CD, windows update nuked my linux partition (literally - now empty space instead of my previous ubuntu partition)
> Reinstall ubuntu
> Now stuck on «Loading operating system»
Oh well, I know what I'm doing tonight
> Pic related16 -
Friend: My C code's not working.. Can you please help me debug?
TA: *puts a space before a semicolon*
TA: *Changes "i++" to "i=i+1"*
😤😤😤5 -
Hi guys, I am an Indie Game developer and I am launching a fully playable demo of my Space game STRIFE - Battle for the Southern Star tonight at 7pm GMT. Would love for my fellow Dev Ranters to check it out! Download will be available on the games Website below: www.pretzelstudios.co.uk/ at 7PM.22

"Windows can't update because you don't have enough disk space"
HOW ABOUT YOU STOP FUCKING POPPING UP A GIANT UNFUCKOFFABLE OVERLAY IN THE MIDDLE OF MY VIDYA GAMES FOR THE 10000th TIME?
I fucking know I have no disk space, if you complain one more fucking time, I'll make disk space -- by deleting you.
(I'm joking, linux/mac game support is so fucking trash)17 -
I was wondering why I never have space on my C: drive…
It seems that "Windows.old" which shows as only 500 MB in the explorer actually weighs almost 100 GB. 😑4 -
Moved in to new house, finally have myself a room for an office. Started to deck it out and the wife asks if we can find matching chairs, one for her, one for me...
It's more than an office, its supposed to be my man/dev cave!11 -
Dev of my team coding on Idea
Seeing him using space-bar to format copy pasted lines of code
Me: why don't you use ctrl+l shortcut?
Him: I don't use shortcuts while coding
Me: at least use the tab
him: nope.
He formatted 3000 lines of code with space-bar. He's not even using notepad. 😐
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.9 -
!WTF
Take a look at how big my SSD is(220GB).
Take a look at how much space I can remove with MS Disk Cleanup.
So there is a very very 👌 small risk that I will now erase the whole Windows Update File Server at Microsoft, lets see what's happens 🤞16 -
Since 4 weeks i have during work my noise cancelling headphones on, thanks to the new open space office.
I don't even hear my phone ringing 😂1 -
Today my cat, my oldest girlfriend, passed away. She chose to be in the sun for her passing. I'm happy she had a good life in the end with all the space she needed. She did not suffer. It was sudden and just a cardiac arrest.
May she hunt many more mice and little birds in the afterlife.21 -
I hope Desks of devRant is still a thing because..
I BUILT MY OWN (。♡‿♡。)
My dad helped me with the metal work. I build the wooden plate myself and I think it looks beautiful.
Also my devDucks and my little bongo cat support me. As well as my real cats which now have more space to annoy me.
I love this table ( ˘ ³˘)♥10 -
Today - after a successful launch of my own GitLab-Server - I finished my other project!
It's a Resouce Panel for my Homeserver to check it's stats like:
- CPU usage
- RAM usage
- Network Traffic
- Disk Space
It works like a charm and only need php <3
If you guys want a download link, I'll send one in :)51 -

Finally back to coding at the new office. Better connection speed. Wider space. Own toilet.
Guess you won't see new posts from me anytime soon.
Just gonna enjoy the rest of your miseries from my chilled desk.
😎5 -
So I cannot complete my program because of space in my username...
Thanks for being user friendly Android Studio7 -
Manager: we require people to work in the office but we'll give you a space to get as comfy as you want.
Me: *walk into the open space office, set my mechanical keyboard, plug in my noise cancelling headphones, start coding and mumbling every now and then*
Manager: keyboard is distracting others and we don't allow headphones as we want to be able to speak to you when we feel like it.5 -
Our professor once asked us to 'mess up' the functionality of a PHP script with one shell command for fun. People tried different things like occupying the port, messing with access rights etc.
My friend just wrote a 'sed' command to replace all the underscores with an empty space...😂
It goes without saying that he stole the show.2 -
For my final project as a first year computer engineer, I have to implement a FAT32 file system using a bare metal c++ compiler that will need to work on arduino uno/due....
I've only been in the computer engineering space for 2 months.
Not sure I can do it, but I'm going to try my best!
Wish me luck10 -
*Hopefully devRant's compression of images doesn't ruin it.*
The center of the trackpad simply feels smooth because of the oil from my finger.
The keys are oily as well. Specifically the space bar and backspace.
I guess it's time to find a way to clean it. I probably can't save the trackpad lest I damage it.31 -
So I'm sick. But my inner coder tells me that I could atleast do some basic design for my project.
So I go to sit down at my home computer and immediately feel my nose literally start dripping of snot as soon as I lean in to sit. So lile any normal man i take a tissue, wipe and blow my nose and it's now time to login on the computer.
*Wrong password*
Oh, I've must been to quick
*Try again*
*Wrong password*
Wtf?!
*Slowly type my password in*
*Wrong password*
*Fuck it, show password*
A space is missing.
Alright I'll just add it in then.
*Tap spacebar*
*Nothing*
*Tap harder*
*Nothing*
So I rip out the space bar and find a two little drops of snot that must have juuuust fallen between the cracks.
I tried to wipe it away and put the space bar back, but it's dead. :(5 -
Jim comes in and tells me that server RENEGADE-DB1 has no more space left and that he tried to remove a few ridiculous sized log files, but that the system wouldn't allow him. So he used some 3rd party tool to shutdown the processes that used those log files and then succesfully removed them.
Now the database is not working and Jim needs my help.
Hello darkness my old friend.11 -
Started sending my resume to a few select companies. My job is secure (for the moment at least) but I cannot work with someone who is anti-vaccination, believes men and dinosaurs coexisted and International Space Station is out there to meet and greet his Lord...
Wish me luck15 -
I hate open space offices for following reasons
- bright environment (I cannot turn off the light just for my own)
- noises (talking, discussions, chewing)
- requests and questions
- people
But I still cannot afford to be in my own office room yet.
Now I have to wear a cap inside the office like a mad-hatter and plug my ears with earphones even without playing any music.11 -
If I wouldn't have studied computer science my second choice might have been astronomy. Dang, space is so fascinating. Love watching documentaries about it when I go to bed :o11
-
So I persuaded my boss to buy me 2 extra wide monitors (2560x1080).
They're way to big and my neck hurts. After few months, I stopped using edges, and keep all my editors and browsers in the center of my viewpoint, leaving edges empty.
My desk is also too small, and I don't have space for anything else other than monitors.
We programmers have it rough :(6 -
I want to install a game, but I haven't enough space on my disk. Then I want to uninstall VS because I don't code in C# and VS has the most place on my disk. I clicked on uninstall and then come the VS Installer. He needs an update and I don't have enough space on my disk.
Fuck this.5 -
-> "cs" friend wants to install "linux" on his laptop
->won't do it himself cuz cuckhole is afraid of ruining his original windows installation
->shitfuck bugging me for months and I always deny saying he needs to learn this shit too
->finally decide to help him, get a "linux" and go to the craphole he dwells in
->laptop looks high end, bezel less and what not. Also has a 120gigs ssd.
-> decide to partition it. Shit.
->ssd has less dan 40gigs left. Check and see there's ntn but a few store apps and visual studio installed+some personal data. Hmm where the fuck is the missing space.
->few mins of fkin shit around, decide to see size of windows installation
->nope
->nope
->nopenopenope
->windows+fuckYouUpdates takes > 50gigs of Precious and COSTLY ssd space
->tell my friend to reset windows, he denies and i nope the fuck outta there.(ik uninstalling updates and clearing cache and stuff might release space but not spending my whole fkin eve doing that thanks)
I don't hate windows, i love pc gaming but THIS is some shady shit microsoft fuck u and your worthless imbecile space sucking updates17 -
Do you still store your music files locally?
I like owning my music files on my storage.
Disadvantages:
Storage space
Time spent organising metadata
Advantages:
Savour the quality
Accessible
I don't have an internet access all the time unless I'm home. I feel left behind seeing everyone just streaming music.21 -
I don't know how to really put this but a professor at my university thinks adding a space in java program will help to execute code successfully .I am rethinking over my decision to join university18
-
Just opened my laptop to see if I can upgrade my ram, and yes I can
And I've got space for a 2.5 drive as well!
Fuck yeah!
All I need is a 1080 inside of this :P
But I've just got a shitty built-in gpu...16 -
My home setup.
I love having a huge desk.
I can fit my work setup and I still have space for some mess (and university stuff) 😁6 -
I accidentally wiped my entire drive because I fed my program the string: C:/Program Files/ProgramName/program.exe Without quotation marks and my program interpreted the space as a new command. It tried to delete C:/Program, and then the parent directory, C:/. I actually posted a “rant” on here asking how to recover data if you want to dig through my history.
*Edit* Actually, no, I must have deleted the rant asking about data recovery. My bad.5 -
Today is my birthday and all I checked in was a blank space with the commit message: "fuck yeah, last year in my twenties"!7
-
This is my desktop setup reveal 1 of 2, I wasn't sure about the monitor stand (which is why I only got the 2-arm) but really love the extra space it gave me.
3 screens help a whole lot, hardware is a bit outdated but it works for at least low end VR development.
my specs are (if anyone cares):
gtx 970 (surprisingly great for vr)
i5 4690k
asus z97 mark 2
16gb ram2 -
After 1h of work, research, one ugly hack and 2 unexplained laptop power outages i made it. I shrunk down my docker container from 800MB to astonishingly small... 500MB...
In my defense: the python libraries take up 300MB of space.5 -
Me and my classmate working on the same problem but on different machines.
Him: Hey, how to create a file by terminal?
Me: touch space filename.
Him: Hey, how to open file?
Me: vi space filename
Him: How to do this? How to do that?
Me: Do this. Do that.
After sometime,
Him: Hahahaha... I solved the problem faster than you... You are so slow. I am better.
Me: 😒👺👿2 -
devRant is so refreshing. my circle runs more in the LinkedIn space, so i naturally get on there more. but every few weeks i come back to devRant and get the pure, honest thoughts of developers and it’s always great
just appreciate the realness on here
Merry Christmas everybody5 -
My new start training at my current place of work.
Learned how to use Linux, terminal, ssh, git, MySQL, how to create basic web apps with Spring, how to write unit tests and UI tests. All in the space of 4 weeks. Best training I have ever been on.3 -
I interchanged my space-bar key with my delete key.
I think this is one of those many times everyone is wrong and am right1 -
My company that I work for now is making me work on my personal laptop for the past 4 months! Like wth! It’s work from home y’all, and you gotta work 24/7 but on your own laptops! A thing came up for a new project, and my laptop doesn’t have enough space for it, they were like, delete your stuff, make space! Wtf! It’s called a personal laptop for a reason!13

I feel my body is changing into greater entity that is God of Time and Space.
"How long does creating this feature takes?"
"42 mins and 12 seconds"
BOOM and its 42 minute, 12 second exact8 -
Had to change my avatars clothes, dont want people thinking i dont wash.
Went to check my closet on the app, shit... Im a poor bastard. Dont have enough money, cough i mean points to get that new pair of shoes ive been eyeing.
Got me thinking, we are all essentially sugar mommies and daddies. I always wanted to give that a go, so far im liking it.
Long story short - thanks for this space everyone including the community
#liveLongAndProsper Dev Rant2 -
me: boss the server is full, no more disk space
boss: run my cleaning tool
me: it didnt clean anything!
boss: fix my cleaning tool
me: *facepalm* -_- -
Started using windows mixed reality for part of my work day, best part, using Cortana voice activation to do things in my virtual space, worst part, every time i say 'hey Cortana,' my google home makes a snide remark.
Fucking google3 -
Spent bloody ages trying to figure out why my Modal wasn't working. There was a space in the id name :/1
-
Do simple Windows apps need space this much? The bulky stuff that Visual Studio and SQL Management Studio put on my machine are already pissing me off and now this? Fuck.10
-
Just watching NCIS.
Abby: I just checked the j and the f key for fingerprints, because you lay your fingers there, when you think about what to do.
Me: Bitch, I'm a gamer, I lay my fingers on LShift,A,W,D,Space.4 -
So, we have massive desks in office and there is no much space for them to fit +2 newcomers. Occasionally, my old youtube recommendation "Tetris Original Theme" started playing out loud. :)10
-
$Me: I want to start creating my own android app.
$Me: Let's start by installing android studio
*Goes to download AS*
$AS: That'll be 4gb of your disk space
$Me: well nevermind then
Really? 4gb for a fcking IDE and some build tools?5 -
Built a Media server using emby and then realized that one of my old TV shows with only 5 seasons was taking 129GB of storage space and I would need to transcode them, did my research and decided to use VP9 for the codec (YouTube, native browser support, etc.) found that it reduced my shows size to 51GB with great quality still. And then found out that emby doesn't allow direct play of VP9 on browsers and it's transcoding back to H264 Everytime I watch it. Submitted a issues, we'll see what happens now.1

Dear ESLint,
- you convinced me to put a space between function() and {
- you convinced me to use single quotes for strings in place of double quotes
- you convinced me to put a space between inline operators
- you had me when you said that trailing spaces shouldn't compare in my code
- you said to put semicolons at the end of each instruction, and I thought it wasn't a so bad idea
BUT NO FUCK OFF NO NEVER I WON'T NEVER PUT A FUCKING TRAILING COMMA IN THE END OF JAVASCRIPT OBJECT IT'S MEANINGLESS UGLY A WASTE OF A FUCKING BYTE.
WHY THE FUCK I SHOULD TYPE var obj = {a: 'some text',} INSTEAD OF var obj = {a: 'some text'} WHY WHAT'S THE MEANING OF THAT FUCKING COMMA9 -
Turning my 27" monitor vertically was the smartest thing I did all year.
There's so much space now that just using it makes me happy!
That only drawback is the 1080p horizontal resolution which is not enough for many sites to fit without zooming out.
I feel like I will soon persuade myself to buy a 4K monitor...4 -
So I have the new Mac book pro for 8 months now, always thought that the butterfly keyboard issue will never happen to me.
Until three days ago I noticed my space key is kinda sticky.
I have an external monitor so I don’t recall any time I spill water or food directly on the keyboard.
So I made an appointment for a walk in.
BUT this morning, I was like: man, fuck this shit and smashed the space key.
Now it’s fixed.
Good1 -
FUCK U GOOGLE PHOTOS, I MANUALLY UPLOAD PHOTOS FROM THE APP AND THEN DELETE ONE FROM THE WEB APP FROM MY PC BECAUSE I DIDNT WANT THAT ONE UPLOADED.....
BUT IT DELETED IT ON MY PHONE.... WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lesson of the Day: Manually copy all photos to PC and external HD first. Then upload the ones you want.
This is taking a while.... i wonder if i have enough disk space.....11 -
The local news came to my coworking space looking for some sound bytes, I was chosen and very carefully opened up devrant on the monitor behind me before she started.5
-
Said jokingly to my dev lead yesterday: "or you could just use that VPN we have lying around lol"
The look on his face while saying: "v..pn?"
Like it was same mambo jambo from outer space written in Russian... Lol, this dude is so out of touch with tech :/4 -
I have this reserve phone. My previous phone broke and I needed a cheap replacement till next February.
First thing I did is download DevRant.
Since I play BF1 I also wanted to download the companion app.
It appears that I ran out of space and my phone asks me if I want to remove DevRant to free some space....
Guess I'll use the companion on the web then. -
Why is every company so BAD at working with spaces in passwords? Just trying to setup Hulu on my PS4, apparently I forgot my password? No, my password had a space in it. So maybe Hulu's just one of those companies that doesn't allow spaces in passwords? Wait no, I can log in with no problems on my Switch or PC with the space. It's just SPECIFICALLY the PS4 app that doesn't allow spaces. Cool cool cool.
Like, am I missing something? Is there some reason it's harder to hash than other characters? It's just an ASCII character, it's not like I'm copy/pasting in some fringe unicode shit. Some companies straight up ban it. Some like Amazon don't recognize it as a special character, while demanding I use a special character. Why is this so terrible?4 -
Got the stikers today, and realized that most of the space in my laptop is empty. How can i get some more stickers to fill the voids.7
-
Dear "Create a web API with ASP.NET Core" official MS tutorial:
you betrayed me. I came to you like an innocent child and you fucked me over, you abused my trust, forcing me to follow insane instructions leading to no result other than the loss of my childhood and my day.
I feel like a child raped by some perv-priest or monster father.
I had a soul ready for a space walk,
and now I have just a hole full of your cock1 -
I need to stop finishing my sprints work within the first 3-4 days of the sprint.
I get so excited to get work that I loose my sense of time and space so I finish it all in one go...
Now I’m gonna be bored again for 2-3 weeks 😫8 -
Hi guys, I just wanted to share some footage of my upcoming Space Game - STRIFE - Battle for the Southern Star.
https://youtube.com/watch/...
Super happy with what I have been able to achieve in just 2 months of development. Demo coming really soon.21 -
Registering a new account for microsoft teams:
`Your password cannot contain a space, &# characters combination, or the following characters: < >`
Are they storing the passwords in plain text? Are they not sanitizing the input? Why the fuck would they care if I put motherfucking emojis in my password? What the fuck are you doing to the passwords, Microsoft? TELL ME.4 -
I'm staring into my empty coffee mug,
hoping I could find this annoying bug.
Like always I have no such luck,
so I'm turning to my rubber duck.
He's emotionless expression I cannot read,
Guess he doesn't have what I need...
I can feel the bug mocking my face,
While I'm aimlessly looking into space.2 -
Reading a Ray Wenderlich book to try give RxSwift a go. Book is well written and going well. But I’m grinding my teeth at the fact all the code samples use 2 space indentation. Despite the fact apples standard is 4 ... and you know tabs would let us decide.
I know it’s a small thing, but it’s really pissing me off3 -
If my boss says "Don't think in the solution space; think in the problem space" one more time, I'm gonna start crying in pain and banging my head against a robot. 🙄😂😂3
-
Docker I don't have time for your bullshit tonight!
You're supposed to be this safe space where my code runs and neither the code or the god damn container changed.
Don't give me some bullshit about the container either, it's pretty clear docker itself is fucked ...2 -
My phone's space was almost full so it automatically deleted 3 gigs of my videos, photos, songs, recordings and I don't fucking know what.
FUCK these Chinese shit phones.5 -
I'd post a pic of my setup but in reality my workspace is any space I can perch my laptop and be out the way of customers and colleagues.
-
<rant>
I really don't enjoy visual studio
Is not bad but it's not worth the disk space it takes up..
Also, if your disk is starting to fill up and vs is filling the most space, YOU CAN'T <swearword> UNINSTALL IT FROM YOUR PC
To remove the shit, I had to upgrade to Windows 10 (our school PC's are not allowed to have Linux) and delete my whole fucking disk, just to get it removed
Fix your shit ms
</rant>12 -
Fuck today and fuck every piece of shit manager and non-dev coworker that thinks they contribute anything meaningful besides being a fucking idiot and making things complicated. I hope my team, except for the other devs, jumps off a bridge into a valley of dicks and spikes. I hope my client tells them to personally fuck themselves for being such a useless waste of space. Fuck off and die cunts.1
-
My project manager just had a project review at a bar because there was no space at the office. There are literally so many people at the office that we're out of chairs. And space. In a few days three more developers are scheduled to arrive. I don't know where we will put them.3
-
Android, please fuck off. I cant install/update apps because i don't have enough space. So 1gb of free memory is not enough for a 10mb app?
This is my 3rd android phone, and I've had the same issues on all of them.
Probably getting a iPhone 7. Sad, i know :(19 -
I need more disks! Setup sonarr and radarr a few months ago and just like that my free space evaporated! Too bad I don't have the cash for a NAS 😅5
-
I just found out that my partner writes his increment operators with a space between the variable and the operator.
i ++;
anybody else do that because he's changed parts of our code to include the space and it's frustrating7 -
dear deutsche bahn developers: please review you handling for dynamic contents width. yours sincerely
ps. riding in a full train and not enough space to handle my computer is boring.5 -
I can't stand my MSI laptop keyboard. The enter key is 2x smaller to make place for a bigass * key, and the > is at the right of space key... Writing HTML makes me want to shoot myself.
What are your keyboard constructors lunacies ?3 -
Omg how stupid some people are... Today at my university I used the first time one of the computers in the computer room and there is a portable Firefox installed in a shared space on the computer and that is also where it saved settings etc. So this is the same for every user on that particular computer.
And when I checked the security settings I found that about 10 different accounts were saved and accessible with website username and password.
So of course the shared space Firefox is bad, but you still shouldn't save you password on a public computer :S
PS: If anyone needs a webmail account or an account for the german university network contact me :P4 -
So I have to install visual studio which will take about 8gb of space for node-gyp to work.
WHY THE FUCK DID I SWITCH? I WAS HAPPY WITH MY LINUX
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO2 -
I have a dedicated office space at home with a huge desk that was given to me by my mom and stepdad as a gift with a really nice chair that my wife got for me. It has a nice long whiteboard to write whatever it is I am doing, a bookshelf with tons of coding books and guitar magazines and shit. A closet with good space and in a corner sits my guitar and amp.
Where can I be located during coding hours? In the floor, on the living room, using a box to put one of my laptops in.
Why am I like this?2 -
Fuck you scp. I was uploading 6GB file to an EC2 server. Well, needless to say, "no space left on device" after all 6GB transferred was the biggest FUCK YOU moment. Seriously. Send the file size and check before you waste 30 minutes of my time. Oh, and don't read CLI command data as part of the transfer. You suck.8
-
Saturday 9.00 AM. I was sleeping, my colleague (on holiday) sent me a text: "We got a problem on our system, probably we ran out of space". I checked the log and found out that several cron jobs failed due to not enough space on the disk. I started deleting some unnecessary logs (we're paranoid) and ended up to squeeze the vm like a lemon to save some space. Sent an email to the sysadmin, "We got to add more space ASAP, users are getting 500 errror for almost everything". Silence. I thought to myself: "Until monday we're safe..". I did a df (96%) and sent a screen to the sysadmin, just to be sure that we understood each other. Finally monday comes, nobody worries about the issue. At noon I literally takled the guy of IT dept. "Yeah, we read your email. I think the sysadmin didn't take you seriously". "Why? Which part of 'we're running out of space' isn't serious?!!!". "He just told me that we have unlimited space on that vm". Unlimited space...sure.... "Right.....the disk is at 96%, buuuuut if he said so No news to worry. Don't call me if everything burns. Have a good day!!!"4
-
did not expect the stickers would actually arrive! you sent it all the way half of the earth. the stickers earn a deservedly special space on my laptop and phone. Kudos to you devRant!2
-
Me: "time to install some stuff for visual studio.. But VS, my system drive is getting full, so install these additions on this other drive with tons of space."
VS: Sure thing! I just need to put 95% of it on your system drive. Cool?"
Me: "REEEEEEEEE!'1 -
#1 Sharing co-working space with my wife.
#2 my home office! (I transitioned from music industry work into data science over the last few years)8 -
I really like having my desk in the corner of the office. Then I can block the entrace with my umbrella while drying it. Combine that with headphones and monitors blocking direct sight of me. So I have the ultimate do not disturb office space for efficient programming!5
-
on my college days (8yrs ago), i had to study COBOL as part of syllabus....
you had to write lots of codes as header on every simple program you write, define every variable you gonna use (with how much space they need) upfront..
and you can't leave a blank space any where in the code unless it is required!!
best part? you need to start every line of code with 7 blank spaces! and each line should end at 72 chars...if you have more to type in a line, the next line's 7the char should be a dash(-) to indicate so..
and the compiler's error messages are shit!
now, even with modern languages, people think its hard to code!3 -
Went into a room that hasn’t been visited in a while.
I decided to clear up some space and see how dusty it was.
Naturally I use my hand to take the dust off the table.
My hand is covered in dust.
Because of the absence of a trash can, I have no choice but to open the window and throw the dust outside.
I open the window; a gust of wind rushes inside, blowing all the dust in the room.
Smh.4 -
“Your iCloud doesn’t have enough space for backup. Upgrade shit”
— My new phone that doesn’t have a single fucking document on it.2 -
My friend starts every program by adding some¹ empty lines in the Main function, 'couse "I need space where I can work". I can't understand him.

Wow... so i split my ssd into 2 partitions, one for Windows and one for ubuntu. After booting into ubuntu multiple times and it works fine, i boot into windows for a while. Next boot i get met with the grub rescue screen... apparently when i booted into windows it deleted my ubuntu partition and allocated the space back to its partition. 😐3
-
To leave 9/5 behind and successfully launch my own thing. By design it should require minimal maintenance so I should be good to spend my time however I feel fit. Get my fam and close relatives involved as well.
Move out of that tiny apartment into a large house outside the city where my kids could grow their imagination, have nearly unlimited space to plat at safely, where I would no longer feel squeezed in tightly.
I'm the donkey and that's my carrot hanging in front of me1 -
I like to right justify my comments to save space and make it easy to see what's happening on a line by line basis13

FaceTime is not instant access in to my space. I can ignore that too. Every time you want to tell me you've sent me the logo sets me back 15 minutes. Do I really need to fucking see you to tell me that shit. It's not for you to reel off a load of requests either... when you have finished don't you here me say "put it in an email and I'll get back to you". Stop wasting my fucking time. FaceTime.1

My friend learnt how to use CircleCI for his laravel projects and he hasn't given me a breathing space since, he's constantly saying "I'm now a DevOps engineer".
I told him "You're only only a BugOps engineer". 😂😂 -
What are your favorite hotkeys? Some of mine:
Super+x: opens xterm(by far my most used hotkey)
Alt+space: opens mutate launcher prompt
Super+Alt+c: opens selectable clipboard history
Super+Alt+d: toggles window decoration
Shift+Alt+4: enables draggable selection rectangle for screenshots(like on a Mac)
Alt+keypad_minus: switch to next virtual desktop
Super+tab: opens rofi for keyboard filterable selection of open applications5 -
white space being used significantly/meaningfully for syntax like python or yaml is a horrendous idea in my opinion
how awful is my take13 -
Piece of shit shitware called visual studio, I only need you because of that stupid vcvarsall.dll, so I gave you a folder on my HDD, but nooo, You just had to ignore this and place yourself on my SSD. My poor SSD that has very little space left.
Fuck you visual studio. To me you are a literal waste of Time, Space and Sanity2 -
I didn't realise that so many people in a dev social space cannot differentiate SE from CS...
Also, lecturers should have some mandatory teaching training, just because you have an area of expertise, doesn't inherently imply an ability to teach the material to the students. Powerpoints, and endless incoherent monologues are the bane of my existence2 -
Definitely not a rant.
After the OpenGL ranting (here and by myself), I wanted to share with you my joy to have achieved a little goal:

TLDR filling disk space
Filling almost all c drive and buying more and more external storage.
When downloading new software, open file explorer -> my computer -> press f5 every 10 seconds to see your drive taking place. -
Using Ubuntu from years, never knew this logs file named 'syslog.1' could start filling about 80% of my root space 🤦.6

Manager: "are you doing this obscure process that I laid out months ago with no plan or follow through?"
Me: "no, my other 3 managers said they didn't see any value in it, not sure how to keep everyone happy"
Manager: "that's not what we want! You need start doing this obscure process now!"
We have 20 engineers total in my company and I have 4 managers. Office Space was a documentary.2 -
For my AP Comp Sci final project I put a ton of work in, and built a mix of space Invaders and galaga, and called it Space Invaders 2. I created the thing on my own, with no partner, and I did all the art myself too. It was easily one of the best in the class.5

Latex, can you for once be nice and not fuck up my images, please?
Can you stop pushing this image which you clearly have enough space for to the next page and leave the previous page completely empty??9 -
today my cpu was at 100% (red) ram at 96% (above 95 is memory leak) and disk 95% (almost no space left) bc i ran emulator 2 android studio projects chrome etc all in the same time1

I'm in an open space
Since there are new people, they are formed so people are talking. So I put my headphones with noise reduction.
But I'm with a team that communicates too, so my music shouldn't be too loud.
Man it's hard finding the good balance in the volume.1 -
Was explaining the usage of   and white space in HTML to a confused nondev colleague. He later asked how come there is white space, when this program you use to code is a black..while pointing to my dark themed text editor.
-
We're making reusable rockets and putting cars in space but I still can't pay with my fingerprint instead of a fucking pin code.9
-
Going to a student study center. (Not sure how to explain, but it's basically huge library without books?)
Huge quiet space with tons of people studying just makes me want to focus on my own things.
So, group mentality I guess1 -
Co-worker told me my code isn't up to" standard" and I don't follow "relevant convention" because I don't use a space after declaring a class/function AND inside the parentheses:
Me: class MyClass(something):
Her: class HerClass ( something ):
How do you do this personally?9 -
Programming deeply inspired me before it became my day job. Before Facebook conquered the front-end and API code space. Before Electron apps. Before D. Trump became president. Each of those dealt a hit to either my passion for dev or motivation to create software for others10

Why didn't i use 2880x1620 resolution on my zenbook before?
Jesus it feels that i got so much more space and and it's pretty awesome
tmux + i3wm feels even more awesome4 -
I’m thankful for my team. I had an upsetting personal incident and it was affecting my ability to be present. I even missed a meeting. They are giving me the space I need and rescheduling other meetings for me. It’s hard for me to accept compassion because I haven’t experienced a lot of that when I needed it. I was very distressed at the beginning of the week, but now I’m starting to feel better and getting back to functioning.2

Few weeks back, I have subscribed /r/battlestations and drooling everyday. Now with this latest devRant news, it's time to save money or sell my ass on street to
1) buy a wide monitor or monitors
2) buy backlit keyboard and mouse
3) buy a good desk
4) buy a good chair
5) buy/rent a room with enough space
Forget about buying and setting up a good unit, I can just use my potato laptop for one photo taking. *dry-laugh*

The problem with Windows Store apps is that they are not uniform. They are all layed out differently from each other. Their navigation sucks. They use too much mystery meat icons. Some waste space. The interface is like zoomed in. Just my personal opinion though.2

Made my first game last weekend, in a Hackathon.
Had to build either a Pong clone or a Space Invaders one. Went with the later, and used Phaser. So pumped up! :D

Okay this is 3.30 AM . Just woke up from bad geeky dreams. My heart is pounding so fast that I could nose bleed and I can't sleep as I am remembering I had the same dream last night.
Dream was about : me being astronaut. Everything was usual. From rocket launch to be in space. Scary part was my ship in orbit of moon.
Seeing dead land from that height chocked me. Imagine you are looking out of the window and all you see a big grey land and pitch black in background. Realising there is no one out there was spooky.
The scary part was I launched some satellite but crash on surface. It was scary seeing something going smaller every time. Crashing on deserted land was one plus on adding fear.
Then my ship leave the orbit (from the reverse shock of that satellite dittachment ) and it flow away in the vastness of space......
Away from the moon and away from the earth in long loneliness.
I wish I could erase this from my memory but I am not gonna watch space exploration video anymore.
I got to say, landing on moon is one thing but being out there knowing one accident and you will be forever there. You need balls to be on such missions.4 -
I hate it when software downloads an update
and then shuffles a notification up my face saying "An update has been downloaded and ready to install".
Just WTF is wrong with these developers! What if I say no then you just successfully wasted my fucking internet data and disk space. Thank you and no thank you idiots.1 -
Public transport is slowly getting quieter and quieter. One side of my enjoys the silence and space, but the other side wishes I had the option to not take it either.
Everyone WFH, I envy you...2 -
Which misanthropic, terrible, perverse excuse for a dogfucker decided that damned non breaking spaces (SPACES!) return false on isWhitespace? It's in the name, space, it's white, it's a fucking white space, a whitespace if you will so who do I have to kill for wasting two damned hours of my life trying to parse away those bastards?3

Went to steal a tool from my father's office. That was 3 hours ago..
Didn't find the tool (more labels for a label machine, I'm marking everything), still found lots more stuff, filled the space in my office that took me a week to open and now I have like days off stuff to unmount, reuse,... And didn't find the fucking labels... -
I sit in a cubicle and I update bank software for the 2000 switch. You see, they wrote all this bank software and to save space, they put 98 instead of 1998. So I go through these thousands of lines of code and uh, it doesn't really matter. I, uh, I don't like my job. I don't think I'm gonna go anymore.1

I’ve got so many stickers but I’m saving space for my devRant stickers 😅 we’ll see where the others go once those get their place. They’ll probably get here next year but I’ll wait 🙂7

For the love of fuck, my sd card had a ridiculously large amount of space, but I can't just download apps to it, the best I can do is download to my space-limited phone and then "move to sd card" which doesn't help if the app is bigger than the space I have on my phone and because it doesn't move the while app, just a couple files, stupid fucking fuck1

for now i'm fueled by rage

Besides assorted craft materials and PC my desk has a dual purpose crocheted rubber duck: it serves as a pin cushion and my debugging friend! I made him and he has lived there since my first year of university.
I also keep a mug from my university, scented candles, notepad and pen (for all my tech savvy-ness, quick notes are still better handwritten) and whatever crafty project I'm working on.
My desk is honestly a mess (I have to clear it ~three times a week to have any space to work on) but they say creative people have messy workstations so I take my inability to keep an orderly environment as an expression of my creativity. -
My brother: Get your things out of the desk so I can put my stuff
Me: Ok, I'm already allocating some space
I think I'm programming too much 🤔🤔🤔 -
Does anyone else feel bored of sleeping ?
Purposely closing my eyes and dozing off to sleep is something I cannot do... It's just boring.
I tire myself out until my weakness kicks in to give me a couple hours of sleep. This has been affecting my health, concentration and ultimately work and I don't know how to tackle this problem.
Trying to sleep is easier said than done, staring into a blank empty space is a huge anxiety trigger for me on top of being a less exciting thing to do.23 -
Not the best workspace picture in the world but it's my first working space that I rent with some collegemates inside a shopping center with 10 floors in Iran. The only thing that annoys me is the fact that I have to get premission for almost anything from security...
Today the mission is to clean more and make the setups! -
Hello, world!
Okay, guys and gals... I need your creative minds. I need a concept for sort of a property manager for my game.. I have an idea of my own, feel free to tear it apart or throw it out the window.
So basically.. You'll no longer have one Computer System (and you wont instantly hit the login screen for that System on startup) Instead, you'll have a lot of things. They will probably only be represented using text and menu's (likely no 3D or 2D environments or anything.. Though, a setup like News Tycoon would be epic, but I think that would be too much for this game.) You'll basically start off with a small space (probably a basement) with x amount of free space. In that space, you'll need to add things like a desk, chair, and a laptop, or tower + monitor. You can also buy things like server rigs with a ton of space, but those are pricy and bulky. Each item costs X amount and takes up X amount of space. Also, you'll need a desk for a monitor (or multiples..) and other things.. (Like your rubber duck collection ;P JK) You can also rent and manage servers. (renting is more exspensive in the long run, but things on your server are not on your property. But, if you own a server on your property you can rent space to to NPCs) As well as manage your devices, properties, stocks, etc..
Also, there will be in-game time. Depending on how "comfortable" you are will determine how long you can stay up in a day. In-game events will take place later on at specific times so staying up (or not..) will need to be managed well. Especially if you're being targeted by a rival (NPC) hacker.7 -
So Windows released a faulty update that broke the driver for my external harddrive. Now I don't have enough space for the update...4
-
Huh... Seems like my company is going to implement flexible office/home hours even after lockdown is lifted.
Not sure whether they're trying to rip us off, because we're going to use office space less and they will pay less accordingly, or whether it is really a an improvement because allegedly many people here responded that they would like to have such a flexible option rather than being glued to the office space.17 -
You know you should tidy up some space when your ssd has more space left then your hard drive
I still have a second hard drive, but I'm too lazy to move either my steam games or my programs over there...
The time will hit me when the last GB has been used1 -
So everyone is talking about those Greek sign pranks right? But I got something just as bad (I haven't used it as a prank but I've just encountered it on my own -> pranked my self)
So on Mac OS you can type this character with ALT+Space and it looks like a space, but it isn't. If you don't have render whitespaces on you would never know that it is not a space... Imagine the time you can spend on finding that xD you mistyped 1character and BAM broken xD5 -
came to the pub for some peice and quiet to read my book and this fucking dumbass boomer is sneezing every fucking goddamn second dude fucking fuck off god just eject me into space what the fuck is wrong with these FUCKING retards jesus christ5

> A whole 15 minutes long my drives go in overdrive...
> Removed 37 ruby versions and their gems, 104GB space freed up
I should do this more often
And I should now pull in all new versions and other things...3 -
I have spent my entire day code reviewing thinking ...
This developer must think all the lines are fighting with one another ..
I kid you not ! Every line of code has white space between it ....
To top it off ... all strings are initialized new String() then assigned to constants ......
*sigh*1 -
On a lighter note:
Mom: How do I delete messages on my phone? I want to delete some pictures of coupons that I sent you.
Me: Why? Mom, that’s not really necessary. The messages aren’t taking up that much space on your phone. And those coupons have expired anyway.
Mom: But they’re old and I want to delete them.
Me: Ok. Get your phone.4 -
Thank you Google, for updating Chrome on my phone without notice in spite of me explicitly disabling automatic updates and me 'not having enough storage space left' for manual updates. It's nice to see you caring about the user so much.
Now if you sucked my dick while you were at it, that would be great.3 -
I did a backup of my computer on a new harddrive. I know it's on me for not checking this, but how difficult it could be for the software to check if there is enough space on the hd for the whole backup BEFORE starting it, instead of in the middle of it?? 😥
-
I just rebooted my server by accident because I wanted to play Space Engineers.
Long story short, dual booting. Needed to boot into windows. Typed reboot into my terminal. My terminal was not local. When am I finally getting around to set up my terminal color as red when it is connected to another host?
But two things are good here. This was my own server.. Well, bunch of stuff is running on it, including for my bachelor's thesis. But if that was a server of my company, that would have been worse.
Second thing, my systems are fault tolerant. I reboot once per week at the latest and for systems with fail overs once per day. I know they are coming back up. I don't worry. My Gitlab will be back in 5 minutes at the latest. I am going to reboot and play Space Engineers now.
Reboot your servers guys. Only way to make sure they'll survive reboots!4 -
My office computer ran out of hard drive space so I asked for an upgrade.
Instead they gave me a brand new computer with awesome specs and a mid-top tier graphics card, so now all I want to do is play games.
Productivity may drop...2 -
rant && !rant
so my company just relocated to another part of the city.
it took about 2-3 months of searching for a space till the management found a suitable place. then about one more month for settling on the details (price, when we move, etc). then another month of just waiting for the space to be ready ...
the actual move took 1 day ... just one day ...
so the new place
- is better placed (for me at least)
- has lots of nice pubs / restaurants around for lunch or just relaxing after work
- has great views from every office
- lots of extra space for everyone
- ok people (so far) working at the other companies in the same space
- everyone seems so much more relaxed and easygoing and happy at the new place
But:
- the ac is still not working (32 degrees Celsius outside, and our office is facing the sun almost all day)
- for the first days we were lacking blinds at the windows
- office was full of little stinky bugs and they still keep showing up when we open up the windows
So, overall pretty great ... so (rant part??) WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG TO MOVE HERE ??? (both before it was decided to move, about 4 years at the old place, and after)
also, relating to the topic of the week ... nothing code related was learned, much was gained, and a life lesson was obtained: if you don't like something, just change it as soon as you can -
Totally not dev related but had to ait this somewhere... Yesterday my parents came to me and asked what the best way would be for them to have some space cake...
Totally caught me by surprise! Was so surprised I couldn't utter actual sentences for a solid 5 minutes...8 -
I keep forgetting about Ctrl+space so I always end up trying all the letters on my keyboard to see a complete list of properties on a config DTO.

I just noticed that when my wife fills the dishwasher, she always leaves empty the space between the border and the first support for the dishes.
I'm starting to be afraid that she might also believe that arrays start at 1...1 -

I shall now retreat back to my safe space of coding half assed applications...2 -
My users seem to share a collective IQ of that of an insentient, inedible piece of jello which all it does take up space in your fridge. I need a stressball, especially on Mondays.2

@localhost finally got around to posting my WFH space (not pictured is a Surface Book and Surface Pro 3).
@sheffter not everyone has an immaculate desk ;-)5 -
So I downloaded this game (to be fair, it is a preview version for a kickstarter project) and I had to crate an account with my mail address in order to sign in. Fair enough, I fill in this form and it says "invalid mail adress". It came to my attention that the form automatically put a space behind the mail adress so I had removed it. After I put back the space everything worked, but now I can't sign in because I didn't get the confirmation email (I assume because they sent it to [my email]+[space] instead of just my email). Currently chatting with the support guy, seems like a nice guy and I can't blame them because my mistakes are often even dumber, but before you post a preview version of your product online as a first impression, check if it even works. Please. Especially if the reason for posting it online is asking people for money.

I’m expanding my storage with 8x 20TB hard drives. With raid5 on it I would get approximately 126TB of storage space.
This would allow me to download full common crawl dataset and play with it locally.14 -
Here's what's on my mind.
I am building portfolio website as my first project. But I am doing this going the self taught route. I do not know a single soul in the developer space. And none of my friends or family are technical.
How can I get feedback on my site?7 -
So a few minutes after doing a factory reset on my phone, i get 2 notifications... first one saying "35+ apps have been updated" (factory installed apps) and "Your device is out of storage space". WTF 😑1

my workstation, can't imagine to work without it,
waiting for dev rant stickers even left some space for them
Proudly running Ubuntu Gnome 16.043 -
Goin on vacation tomorrow night... As expected to have two more days.

New to linux
So I deleted all of my games, pron, and installers just to free up some space for testing dual boot in my laptop.
I will study all the basic commands in terminal and make use of my time to coding.7 -
Noise!!!
I guess that is bound to happen when working in an open space.
People at my team love playing music from the computer speakers and talk loud. I moved to another corner of the office where people are not playing music aloud and talking less passionately :)
I bought noise canceling headphone, but i figured i don't like to put them on for a long time.1 -
When I look at the hefty PC setup on my desk self-assembled ~8 years ago, the only thought crossing my mind is: "what the hell was I thinking..."
time for an upgrade to free up 1 sq meter of space on my desk5 -
So macOS Sierra introduced the ability to sync sort-of important folders like 'Desktop' and 'Documents' between machines.
Nice idea until I forgot that the default of a lot of programs is to set up your project in the Documents folder, and that the project I was checking out from git had two 20G files. Okay, the machine I was working with at home had plenty of disk space.
Turns out my machine at work did not, and happily synced itself out of disk space, which has been causing all sorts of no-not-fun-at-all busy work this morning.1 -
It feels that I have my own personal space in the head offices of Google 2TB, Facebook 6TB.....I wish they could have provided that much cloud storage of data for free

Spent an hour trying to figure out why my API request was returning unauthorized, turned out I had a trailing space after the ID (hard coded for testing purpose) T_T4

It's not necessarily code related, but ever since I was a kid in grade school, I've wanted a lab where I could solder and build and mix chemicals and build rockets and brew beer and blow stuff up and do all kinds of science that would ruin my carpet and/or otherwise go horribly wrong if done in my living area. One day soon (I hope), I'll have enough space to have a proper lab, just not today.
I daydream about that shit.1 -
Last night i sat down at 6pm to free up some disk space on /boot, because i didnt properly size it months ago on first installation.
5:20am i close my laptop with a fresh install, and no more WinBlows.
Didnt set out to do it, but Im not mad that it happened. -
Funny thing I like to do sometimes that I learned from the movie called Office Space:
Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. -
Best shell (bash) utilities to install? Looking to pimp up my headless server. So far I have tree (path visualizer), tmux, and nnn (disk space tool)8

Jesus fucking christ.
I posted two rants today, both about trying to get my SD card reader to work on my arduino due...
After spending my whole day debugging, rewriting my code multiple times, cutting off anything that wasn't strictly necessary, writing my code procedurally, I finally decided to go and see what the library I HAVE to use is doing under the hood.
APPARENTLY...
uint_fast8_t is NOT 8 bits wide on my due...
The bitshifts were "overflowing" (not really, just taking more space, which it had access to) meaning that my data was getting corrupt.
FUCK YOU FOR TAKING A DAY OFF MY LIFE1 -
From my command center at home like all self-respecting super villians. The League of Evil wants me to join their open space! Isn't that ridiculous? How can we conquer the world while we have to listen to Becky's personal calls???1

Management suddenly decide to push for an early go-live for a product being worked on by another dev team in the company. As a result we are pulled in to help and get extra tasks loaded onto our sprint.
My co-worker pulled an all nighter to get the extra work done.
I emailed the project manager to remove items from my sprint to make space for the new work.
Am I lazy, or smart?6 -
gonna rice up i3 real nice and classy on my new laptop.
do any of you know of a good spotify cli? i'm getting cmus in case spotify dosen't work, but it would save space if i could use spotify7 -
My boss writes code like this:
def someFunction (someArg: String) = ...
Who does that?! A space? Da fuck?! And it's all over the code base. Whenever another dev touches any of his stuff, we correct it:

The way god intended it!8 -
Why the fuck does a freaking SD card reader for arduino needs a 3v and a 5v pin...... I have no space in my project and no experience at all to handle this.... and no fucking place for batteries....
Why is every of my project like this ..... cry12 -
Developer's frustration..
I currently don't have the space (believe it or not) to accommodate two screens onto my desk.

Anyone else bounce games and you become obsessed about how to play the game for weeks?
Playing a space sandbox and I want to figure out the economy system to crank in the dough. Any chance I get I am reading about how to build systems, stations, ships, etc to feed my economy in game. -
does anyone know what other storage is? I got on my mac today and was going to reinstall xcode after deleting it because of how shitty the software is but I couldn't download it because I didn't have enough space. I go to look at my storage and I have 155 GB of storage named "other" AND IT WONT EVEN LET ME CHECK WHAT OTHER IS9

My co-working space was too loud, so I created an app to shush them automatically

My vps made me crazy last night when it showed me no space left on device, & i was like wtf dude merely using 2gb out of 50gb. I might have just fucked my linux installation. Deleted the windows partition, resized the linux over the free space, can no longer boot into ubuntu.
This might have been a stupid idea - I don't know.

I'm at my limits with working from home. It started off really cool, but for a multitude of reasons I just need to get out of my house. I'm seriously considering renting a work space to at least go to part time. If anyone in the Denver area wants to go in on one, or is looking to rent out space, please let me know.3

After 1 year decided to install Nextcloud on my Digital Ocean droplet under a subdomain. I'm happy with the results, and now I'm moving my Google Drive data (including contacts) to my Nextcloud instance.
Wish there is a Google Docs equivalent for Nextcloud I could install!.
I'm studying the chance to offer cloud space to my family for free too.3 -
Hey everyone :-) - Hope you're all doing well & Staying safe, i just have a question for you all, i have a project i am working on which is a command line tool to track my storage on my PC & laptop, right now it outputs my remaining space, used space and storage capacity :-), it also shows these numbers on bar chart & pie chart - i'm proud of it! :D , its written in Python also - would love to know what other things would you guys add to it? any ideas? id really appreciate it :-) cheers! <336

I just realised I have 1TB of MS OneDrive Cloud space lying around unused. DAMNNN!!!
Just yesterday, I was thinking of backing up all my content to cloud (because just in case and past experiences of losing data).
I did a quick fact check and figured that I have ~450 GB of unbacked data.
After quick calculations, I came to a number of how many Google accounts I'll need for 15 GB per account of drive space.
Today, I was playing around with my Microsoft Developer account and saw OneDrive. I thought let's check how much free space does MS Dev subscription offers.
It showed 1024 GB. FUCK! My balls dropped.
Now here's what I did...
I have a local drive of 500 GB, which holds all the unbacked data. Now I setup my local OneDrive there and put everything into OneDrive.
And then, I moved my local Google Drive into OneDrive. A nested setup for important stuff.
So this way, less important stuff is backed up on cloud and accessible everywhere.
And more important stuff gets synced on Google Drive and OneDrive, both.
Did I do the right and sensible thing with this kind of setup?
MS Developer subscription says they expire it in 90 days but until today, they have auto renewed it always.
I still have ~500 GB of space which can be consumed.
Also, overall MS ecosystem seems much better to me than Google. Moreover, MS allows custom domain mapping which Google doesn't.
Let's see how can I entirely migrate to MS ecosystem in near future.18 -
I have realised this the hard way. Never ever ever delete something if it’s backed up in cloud and is not taking space in your device, just to free some space.
Obviously some bullshit is better deleted. But never overdo it. You never know when you are going to want the thing you have deleted.
I have 2 regrets. Both related to deleting things without backup. But in my defence, I forgot that they were not backed up. Brain freeze.3 -
Grrrrrr!! Wtf,.. my younger brother uninstalled the mighty devrant app coz of memory issue to get space just to install a shitty BBM app!! How can I live without this awesome community. I have just banned him indefinately from getting near my fon... still thinking of grounding him!! How can he do that... undeniably in love with this community2
-
This screenshot is from when i first installed Ubuntu, i think 2 years ago.
I though well I'm not gonna be using it much, why bother giving it more than 30 gigs?
WRONG
I instantly fell in love and this became my daily driver. Within 2 weeks this happened. So I did what any sane person would do. Deleted windows partition to make space for this lil fella. (I didn't have much hdd space)
I am a proud man4 -
My space key is not coming back once i clicked . Served like 10 years. It deserve better end than this. damn it guys we lost him. He was so close to retirement. Just this morning he said to me " I am too tired of this board". Its fairwell brother.13

Anyone encountered issue with vanishing hdd space on Windows 7 ??
My father has this issue: amount of free and used space doesn't add up to the correct total. The problem slowly but steadily worsens.
I tried to help to the best of my systems knowledge but no cigar.
We checked sizes of everything with windirstat so we are somewhat sure that used space is calculated correctly.
We ran native disk cleaning, the trash is empty and pagefile is set to static size.
Honestly i ran out of ideas, last one is take a peek at the disk in something like gparted but i doubt I'll learn much.
I'm counting someone here will help me...
Google failed me, only devRant can save me now!14 -
Every time a read a rant about a company environment here I think: “It sounds exactly like my previous company!”
But I know we are in different countries…
I guess that when companies suck over a given threshold, they distort space and time like a black hole and become a unique super dimensional joint venture.1 -
Just wanted to free up some space and separate all of my projects.
First idea ... failed!
mksquashfs /home/tracktraps/Development/myproject1 ~/Squash/myproject1.sfs -info -progress -b 1048576 -comp xz -Xdict-size 100%
mkdir /mnt/myproject1
mount ~/Squash/myproject1.sfs /mnt/myproject1
unionfs -o allow_other,nonempty ~/.unionfs/changes/myproject1=rw:/mnt/myproject1/=ro ~/Development/Project1
Too much cpu overhead, too many folders, can't delete files, all get mixed up ...
Second idea ... failed!
dd if=/dev/zero of=~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs bs=1M count=10240
mkfs.btrfs ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs
mount -o defaults,noatime,autodefrag,compress,compress-force,inode_cache ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs ~/Development/Project1
Well ... little overhead, gzip compression, saved a lot of space, but fixed img size.
Third idea ... yay!
truncate -s 200G ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs
mkfs.btrfs ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs
mount -o defaults,noatime,autodefrag,compress,compress-force,inode_cache ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs ~/Development/Project1
Well ... little overhead, gzip compression, saved a lot of space ... but wait ... why do my btfs files consume more and more space?
Hmm ... time for a little bash and my beloved systemd timers.
for f in `find . -type f -name "*.btfs"`
do
project=${$f%.*}
btrfs balance start -v -dusage=100 ~/Development/$project
btrfs balance start -v -musage=100 ~/Development/$project
fstrim ~/Development/$project
fallocate -d -v $f
done1 -
Aah fuckin ubuntu setup,
I made a some free space from windows disk management for Ubuntu setup, afterwards the turned on ubuntu setup, it showed the free disk space as unusable!!!
I did something,i don't remember, and somehow I entirely erased my E:(contains all my media) Drive 🤦. I was also about to erase my D drive ( contains all my dev work and all).Than I stopped and will sort it later.
I always have my media backed-up on mulitple disks hence I didnt lose much. But Why the fuck does Ubuntu show empty space as unusable ?????2 -
Not enough space in my Linux vps? Ok upgraded plan.
Was figuring out how to expand the free space within the partition, wasted 2hours and all I gotten myself now its a fucking free upgrade from fucking CentOS to fucking gnu grub bash Ubuntu WHAT THE FUCK2 -
Sometimes Idk if it's MARS (a MIPS Assembly simulator) slowing down progressively on my laptop on purpose, or if my specs just can't take my runs of my Space Invaders project that was due for today, but...
With the parameters I put for my PC, it worked just great. But on the university PC, I can't tell what's worse between playing my game or playing Touhou 6 at 650FPS. -
I like manjaro and hate architect...
On my Windows I created an empty space to write the linux there. Booted up the architect flash drive, completed some steps, now partitioning. EFI boot partition, swap, home, root I am going to set em' up.
> Automatic partitioning
Ehm, why not? It warns that it will create new partitions. I created free space in my SSD so its ok isn't it? Surely, it will detect that there is a big enough space to create partitions there. I've lost my Windows, projects, files, docs. Fuck them. Fuck them again. Who the fuck created that automatic partitioning?2 -
Totally not going to a coffee shop to code all day and get some space from my family while back from college ..4

I have a little vserver with the possibility to backup to my free Dropbox. 😎. I host nodejs stuff on it not much fife little apps. Guess what?
Yep my Dropbox running out of space. I like nodejs 😁4 -
I think I just wrote a non-ASCII comma or space somewhere in my code... damn me for having so many keyboards...8

I've went away but now I'm back. My last job was a fucking nightmare, they were well into my rants! New job now. I'll be tearing into my old one in due course. Watch this space.3

Barely working on c++ in recent years. Wanting to delete visual studio to free some space only to be asked to update my visual studio installer which ends up taking more space.
It is just temporary considering I plan on deleting that installer too but this is just plain stupid to be asked to install something so you could uninstall...1 -
because I lacked a portable storing solution (pockets weren't allowed), I couldn't find anything better than using my own skull as a storage box. It turned out it had way more room than expected. The brain itself is quite small, and the whole frontal lobe & the space around the brain is completely empty. Initially, opening the skull was scary and cumbersome, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. Once upon a time, when I tried to pop an acne on my forehead, the hole was revealed, and it led to the storage space beneath. I have no idea how it happened, but apparently the skin is too thin. The bone also looks much thicker from the inside. There were two wires — red and black — leading to a standard PC speaker every old computer had. I wasn't a cyborg, mind you, I merely put that speaker there for storage. The acne hole healed with those wires exposed, leaving a permanent mark due to the wire coloring pigment dissolving in my skin.
I used that storage space to hide the contents of some parcels I was processing back then. I was stealing things. Eventually, my coworker — Bruce Willis — confronted me, and I had to strangle him. My arm became very flexible, and I was able to wrap it around his neck several times during a chokehold. It didn't end well for both of us. -
EVP handed us a packet for some salesforce "low code application" and "citizen developer" bullshit. What is this garbage? Who's trying to weasel into my space? Now we are obliged to learn and use this restrictive "low code" framework instead of doing what we already know, because management types and IT guys cannot compile C#.

I'm learning python and I feel more and more like it!
I either have too much space, or not enough. And this is screwing my chance to pick up tabs... -
Anyone know of a good docker backup tool?
I'm working with fairly limited space here so Im looking for a tool to allow me to backup and restore my docker instance without storing easily recreatable data.
That means that what I want to backup are:
- Container specs (inspections or the like)
- Contents of persistent, non-nfs volumes
Since the image and the contents of my nfs volumes are stored elsewhere, and my space is limited, I decided not to back them up. Same for non-persistent (unnamed) volumes since they mostly contain stuff that you don't want to recreate on every container update or recreation but can easily be recreated if needed.
The hope is that this approach should give me a pretty slim backup while still preserving everything I need to recreate my whole docker instance.
Thanks in advance!11 -
I'm just dumping 10 GB of data remotely from a mysql db, because my el cheapo VPS run out of space
can you suggest a good book?
oh, actually I already found one, the title is "Prepare your fucking server/workspace properly if you want to play around with a lot of data"5 -
I got 21 files with conflicts while merging feature to develop.
16 files were just identation and space shit conflicts. WHY do you commit reformats that change tab characters with spaces or vice versa without changing any code??? STOP WASTING MY TIME3 -
Apart from the fact that I arrived at a good framework at work to play in problem space than in solution space, this post is more about self realisation and a slight progress in my happiness levels.
Monsoons started in India. The vibe somehow had always been melancholic for me triggering SAD (aka seasonal depression).
However, this year I find it cosier than ever. Hot showers, lazing around on a holiday when it's pouring outside, watching my favourite show/movie. I feel very relaxed in the moment, even when work and life is not as expected/under control.
What I realised is that my problem can be solved. I need a bigger house. That would give me privacy, some personal space for hobbies, and put a barrier between me and parents easing the tension and clashes. I could then get married, and with all the money I will save (from not buying a house myself), can be used to pursue hobbies like music, art, travel, etc.
Whenever I relax, my sleep pattern changes where I have longer duration of deep sleep with many dreams (perhaps processing everything). Does anyone else experience such a phenomenon?
Anyway, life doesn't get easy or hard, we just learn to put up with shit.4 -
Playing around with DALL-E mini for the first time, thanks to huggingface.co ... My first request, obviously: "rubber duck in space".
Then it turned into the next one where the request was: "A fleet of rubber ducks in space preparing to conquer a purple planet that has lots of clouds and trees".
...which then turned into me wondering...what would Google Lens think of this...which led me to thinking that will be the thing I tell my kid ... vs. before when you'd joke and tell people not to Google "Google" or you'll break the internet. Now it's: you can't use this AI with this other AI or they'll gain sentience (or if already sentient we'll say: give them a headache or something).1 -
Any idea to get around the cluster storage limitation?
I have to train a model on a large dataset, but the limit I have is about 39GB. There is space on my local disk but I don't know if I can store the data on my computer and have the model train on the cluster resources.1 -
People usually use their phones in portrait mode. People often taking vertical photos and videos. People read books, and every book has portrait pages. Almost every website has unused space on left and right.
But when people see my vertical monitors they all like: oh man, you are weirdo, that's awful and uncomfortable.5 -
I'm anti-social, but sitting alone in my home office day after day is starting to get to me.
Thinking of renting a desk at a co-working space.2 -
Was moving some equipment into my closet/attic space to reduce noise and had to use a laptop with SSH to reconfigure a few things. It was dark with only a laptop screen to guide the way.1

Shits ridiculous
So much of my goddamn time wasted
Perfect idea really
Gradually grab all pixel locations that fit space constraints
Remember finishing this script and watching the areas populate
Purpose ? Extract shapes to feed my damn neural network for custom character recognition
So much goddamn time wasted

Considering using a node.js based library for a simple interface on an embedded ARM system. I have zero experience with node.js. At the very least I will use this as a test rig outside of the embedded system.
How much space will a minimal node.js server take?
Note: If its in the gigs my guess is this will be too large for our system.10 -
I shared my steam library with my little brother yesterday. I almost forgot how fun it is to backseat play Kerbal Space Program.2

I need to actually build up my website since all that's there is a digital resume currently
I have too many ideas for what I want like a simple blogging space, project showcase space, my teacher recommend a lanking page, and a better digital resume. but limited free time to figure out where to start and what to use and that's really demotivating
I'm thinking about using node or vue to learn a framework but again I'd have to learn them since all I know is normal unmodified js. And again where the hell do I start4 -
Anyone playing Star Trek Online via Wine, PlayOnMac, CrossOver, or WineBottler? They yanked the official Mac installer in February and I refuse to allocate space for bootcamp or my Macbook Pro or a dual boot on my hackintosh. I got it working momentarily on crossover but something went wrong.
Damn you Cryptic Studios! -
Man this heat. Everytime I push space bar a new trickle of sweat falls into my eyelashes and causes everything to look like a video game kill cam after a tab of LSD.2

Sorry, technical question but my SSD is running out of space...
Not sure why the old versions are still here... they're taking up a few GBs... Can I just delete them? They're not in Add/Remove7 -
Sometimes I find solutions so ridiculous, I can't help but laugh at the hours that I put into finding them.
I tried to find a way to put space between items in a flexbox while they were in a row, but without leaving uneven space on either side of the elements when they wrap. After scratching my head for longer than I'd like to admit, giving the parent a negative margin and the children the same positive value allowed me to achieve this. (I would have saved a lot of time googling this, I know.) -
My collegue make remote assistance for our software, dedicated to doctors in Italy. A doctor had the hd completely full, so it can't update the software and he call my collegue angry, saying "i've an update error, is your fault!!!" etc...after my collegue explain him he had to free space on the disk because there is no space, he had a genial idea! he brought new laptop, worst than the other one, because of the free space on disk!2

installed linux mint along side with win10.
alocated 25gb space on my ssd for mint (as i would only install couple of browsers, git, python tools and atom)
26hours of happiness. yess im finally back to Linux 💒

If your workflow counts on users copying and pasting things (like security tokens from text messages) read this:
Please for fuck sake trim the damn whitespace before you validate. I can't see the fucking space client-side, and you fucking know I didn't mean to enter <SPACE>123456 as my auth code.
Double click, copy, paste, click, curse <-- Story of my life because somebody forgot a damn .replace statement.1 -
For my side project, I spend more time in thinking about other thinks like Hosting, Disk Space and RAM rather then actually building the application. Lol..fml

I'm really frustrated by the size of node_modules folder that gets created every time for every project. So, I've been looking for some time-space saving solutions. And I found PNPM ( https://pnpm.js.org/ ) , Yarn ( https://yarnpkg.com/ ) and Pkglink ( https://github.com/jeffbski/pkglink ). But I'm not sure which is better to serve my purpose.
Things I'm looking forward to solving:
1. I don't want to re-download the same packages over and over again
2. I don't want the same packages to be in multiple projects and eat up space
3. I want a stable, fast and disk space saving solution
Looking for experts advice.4 -
Meanwhile in OS X: Pressing alt-space gives you a nbsp, not a normal space character. Happens quite easily after a pipe on my layout. Just suck in the pain of that syntax error.

I was planning on migrating my Mastodon instance to a new node, but then I looked carefully at my deployment scripts. I had built in support for multiple servers, but not everything supports it, and the configuration is messy now that I think about it.
Now I need to write a bunch of tests, and then refactor a bunch of my code. Hopefully I can get this done before I run out of space on my Mastodon instance. It's gonna be a fun day. :-P -
In a quiet, closed space unhindered by distractions.
For me (and I'd imagine, many others here), constant conversations in the background, people walking by, etc absolutely kill my focus and keep me from getting work done. Working from home helps a bit, but my neighbors provide plenty of their own distractions.
Honestly, I'll take a broom closet with a laptop, headphones and an Ethernet jack over any other open office design. -
Microsoft one drive
I know you wanna sync my folder
I know you wanna provide a one drive alias to every file
But who the fuck in their right fucking mind makes a alias with space in path
Oh you dumb piece of shit 🤬3 -
iOS Storyboards in Xcode feels like Dreamveawer. This Autolayout and Safe Area shit doesn't make any sense. As for Xcode itself it's a monstrosity, looking forward to purging that and reclaim my disk space.

Why can't Eclipse save non-project-specific customisations somewhere centrally? Why do I have to customise my editor fonts, colours and hotkeys again every time I open up a new work space? Why would they think I could want different editor fonts, colours and hotkeys on every different project I work on?
I so hate Eclipse!
I so hate IDEs!4 -

Do dev or engineer needs to know how the program works?. I mean that should they know about time and space complexity?
Till now my answer is yes, they should know. But i have met more than triple Dev's with absolutely no knowledge of complexity and they all are behind code quality.6 -
I just love when all my code is perfect and clean... then I compile it to see my changes... and everything is fucking broken.. so I think "okay, let me see if I missed something or forgot a space or something stupid."... nope not that *recompiles* nothing is showing up.

Today I found out that memory =/= disk space...
I always referred to disk space as memory. Here's how a casual chat with my friend would be like:
Friend: Hey, you should get this game!
Me: How big is it? 50GB? I Don have enough memory on my laptop for that. -
"I'm going to save space in my source code file by using obscure abbreviations for all my #define statements, and cramming as much C code into as few lines as possible."
- teammate who apparently has no idea how a preprocessor works, and who thinks "code density" literally means cramming lines of code in as small a space as possible in the source file! -
Not much riskiest though,
So on my office laptop I've duel boot Fedora as primary OS and windows another.
So for some reasons I needed extra space on windows so I had to un-allocate some space from /home as it had assigned too much disk(more than 100GB I think)
So I unmounted /home moved all the /home/myuser to /opt using sudo then did sudo rm -rf to /home/myuser and un-allocated some space
after I restarted laptop I get to know that I fucked up little xD
Took me while to fix that shit, I literally created one more user and fixed it as at the time of booting it was trying to get few configs from /home/myuser and even had permission issues. -
student here.
just spent over an hour working on my final project trying to figure out why space padding "wouldn't work" in my strings...
