Here's my piece of advice for new devs out there:

1 - Pick one language to learn first and stick with it, untill you grasp some solid fundamentals. (Variables, functions, classes, namespaces, scope, at least)

2 - Pick an IDE, and stick with it for now. Don't worry about tools yet. Comment everything you're coding. The important thing is to comment why you wrote it, and not what it does. Research git and start using version control, even when coding by yourself alone.

3 - Practice, pratice and pratice. If you got stuck, try reading the language docs first and see if you can figure it out yourself. If all else fails, then go to google and stackoverflow. Avoid copying the solution, type it all and try to understand it.

4 - After you feel you need to go to the next level, research best practices first, and start to apply them to your code. Try to make it modular as it grows. Then learn about tools, preprocessors and frameworks.

5 - Always keep studying. Never give up. We all feel that we have no idea of what we are doing sometimes. That's normal. You will understand eventually. ALWAYS KEEP STUDYING.

Good news: Learning to use Vim was tough as fuck but worth it. I've been on it for a week and not having to use a mouse for text editing anymore just naturally makes more sense.

Bad news: Nothing. Else. Has. Vim. I am going to be spending hours figruing out how to get this to work in MS Office online and Firefox to keep my workflow the same.

we had this guy once, who we gave access to our private repo. everything's all good until we noticed that our amazon bill was USD 8,000+!!! we found out that lots of servers got created and that's bec. this guy forked our private repo and his fork was a public one. our keys were still not in .env files and were part of the commit so some bot got hold of it and accessed our amazon account. we suspected that the servers were used for bitcoin mining. anyway guy was fired on the spot and we also learned our lesson to keep keys out of repos.

I've been working for years on a game that would be a mix between Dwarf Fortress, Factorio and SpaceChem.

Problem is, I keep switching between engines and languages, never making too much progress. I've written several isometric rendering libraries, tried out going fully 2D ASCII or fully 3D in unity... And then something else eats up my time for a while again.

I'm learning golang currently. I 'designed' a mug to keep myself motivated. Turned out pretty good.

Git commit messages are not a game. Be playful with comments in code or your readme.md file but git messages should be a clear reflection of the changes not what a teenager's phone vomited on the keyboard.

Google cripples ad and tracking blockers: In January, Chromium will switch to Manifest V3 which removes an essential API in favour of an inferior one. As usually, Google is being deceitful and touts security concerns as pretext.

That hits all Chromium based browser, such as my beloved Vivaldi. The team argues with their own browser internal blocker, but that's far worse than uBlock Origin. One of Vivaldi's core promises was privacy, and that will go out of the window. The team simply doesn't react to people pointing that out. They're fucked, and they know it.

So what now? Well, going back to Firefox because that will include the crippled new API for extension compatibility, but also keep the powerful old one specifically so that ad and tracking blockers will keep working. Google has just handed Mozilla a major unique selling point, and miraculously, Mozilla didn't fuck it up.

So I just got let go because there was not enough work to keep me full time. Yet my manager was farming out dev work to a 3rd party developer... Fml

When I was having Introduction to Programming in the first year of college, the teacher said something that stuck to me:

Okay. For fuck sakes, writing complex code that's meant to handle "everything" and is "super generic" can be a fuck up. Like just keep shit simple. THAT is the show of great and impressive work. Over engineering is not it. Yes your shit works and yes your shit is fancy but was it needed? How long did it even take you for this over kill? How long will it take the next person to understand or not.

I carry the same mindset as an aspiring programmer as I did when I was a music major. There were times I practice for hours and got very little out of it in terms of quality (because I wasn't interested, focused or willing) and then there were times I practiced for 20 mins and really made progress on the piece. So I always keep that in mind to save me time and to produce better code overall.

I don't really "keep" myself motivated. I wake up with certain amount of motivation every day and then I slowly die inside through out the day, every day.

I remind myself that nobody knows everything, and even the most knowledgeable people have their gaps in knowledge.
For whatever I'm not doing well right now, I'll keep an open mind, and be willing to accept advice and work on it.
In the end, just because I'm not doing something right once, doesn't extrapolate to the rest of my life. I still try to be the best version of myself.

I figured out a way to make your code readable!

The main idea: make everything into a function. Each function should be small and you should gradually use past functions to build future functions.

Depending on the language and the size of your code you should make your functions with different sizes, but always keep them small.

This function splitting allows for debugging small parts of your code, avoids repetition and abstracts your code, each making it more readable.

I just overestimated the fuck out of some tasks because I knew the client would come back last minute and cut the deadline in half.

2 days later they do just that, luckily I overestimated the work so now it's all good.

The annoying thing is that they keep doing this, but since I work for an agency I have no power to drop this client since they give us a lot of work, so that sucks

When people keep asking the same kind of questions over and over and you realize it's your fault for always helping them out so they don't learn how to debug on their own.

I feel ridiculous. While learning SQL databases I ran a query that was supposed to fill up the database with test data for me to play with. The actual result?

8 GB and 330,000+ rows.

Keep in mind this database is on a remote server, so trying to delete it times out after thirty minutes. I’m submitting a ticket right now.

There was a competition being run by a large bank in the Netherlands. The competition involved playing a simple game on Facebook to win prizes. After discovering that much of the game logic was client-sided, I used a combination of cheat engine to speed up the clock and auto mouse clicker to keep the games restarting. Turns out I was able to play several thousand games in a few minutes.

It sucks to have memories assigned to specific sounds.

Honestly, I spent years trying to make the most out of every functionality that the languages provided... After 7 years of that, last 3 I only use the most basic things and I can say: it is far superior to keep things simple. I'm making deadlines in a third of expected time, debugging is a piece of cake, and adding new features usually takes about 5 minutes thanks to very simple and straightforward design.

I set up unRAID on my server this weekend, and only just checked my logs to see if anything weird was happening. Turns out 2 IPs have been trying to brute-force the SSH password all weekend. I quickly installed the DenyHosts plugin and reminded myself to always use a strong password, which luckily I did.

A bit later now, and one of the 2 gave up, the other one keeps trying but of course the connection is refused. Just keep trying buddy :P

Today is Day Two of my Dev Ops Internship.

Started using Trello to track project detail and overall whiteboard my project list. Made a list called "Top 5" and shared the board with my boss so her could keep track with me. - waste months to write an opinionated framework that works only if used in a super specific way
- have a fat sample project as example
- use a code generator to copy and rename the said sample project whenever you create a new service
- have everything break whenever something new is added in the framework
- oh and keep the framework in active development while others work on the client services, so lots of things will break often and out of nowhere

Mobile (Android/iOS) gaming has such potential but publishers keep pushing out mindless garbage. What's the point of getting a gaming phone only to spend your time playing gatcha games?

Joined a startup which does webscraping. I never knew that webscraping can be so much monotonous. I feel like I am doing a damn support job. Apart from that websites keep blocking the scrapers, and that is another thing to be fixed. jesus christ, non devs keep asking for ETA about how long would it take to complete a certain task. Thanks to remote work, I have been burnt out every day, and have been working for 14+ hours everyday!!!!! God help me!

Why does youtube keep suggesting videos I already saw?

Seriously, this must be what going insane feels like. Questioning whether I already saw a certain video every time something feels familiar and having Déja Vus all over the place. Youtube keeps digging out videos I watched a few years ago.

Went up to a booth of some small company with nobody in line and they rejected me flat out because I hadn't had a previous internship. they laid out their requirements (which were higher than Microsoft's I might add) and then said they still wanted to keep my resume. i told them that their requests were ridiculous, then grabbed my resume out of their hands and told them I'd give it to somebody worth my time

Then my toddler reached for my root beer and spills it on my 1 month old laptop. I quickly pull the plug and turn upside down, get it wiped off and pray. Went to my school yesterday to get my computer science degree, aaaand....

Surprise! You got a degree in Liberal Arts! Even though when you graduated, it said Computer Science and thought they already fixed the problem about me graduating with Liberal Arts instead of CS! Nope! Still Liberal Arts!

Sigh, fuck that school. I'm sure when my wife finds out about it, she'll definitely flip out and make me fix this, because she also spent time for me to finish school and get a stupid degree. I just don't wanna deal with it anymore and instead keep learning on my own, make projects, and be so good that employers can't ignore me.

It was so cool doing all this back then, because there weren't many wp devs out there.

I like helping out on weird little projects that keep my brain fed. One of our IT guys needs a little form that can auto inject some info from a small data store (Google sheets). There's a few caveats within his specs. All can be done with some js relatively easily.

But because I said it can be done he thinks it'll take 10mins and now suddenly he's putting pressure on me to do it, despite me also having an actual job to do! So frustrating!

When I started ssh'ing into remote linux machines I would wonder why a lot of the programs I started wouldn't keep running after I logged out... :facepalm:

Our site ran into a cache stampede which took down the site for awhile. While people were helping out, I just stayed out of their way since I knew nothing about it -_-

You keep repeating it wrongly until you are blue in the face, the whole world has gone red and the sweet release of death sounds favorable to your current dilemma.

Then, if you are lucky, you get it right out of the many many failed attempts.

But, what you have learned is far greater than getting it right once. You've learned many ways not to do it again.

Me: "no, my other 3 managers said they didn't see any value in it, not sure how to keep everyone happy"

Manager: "that's not what we want! You need start doing this obscure process now!"

We have 20 engineers total in my company and I have 4 managers. Office Space was a documentary.

If I have to change my domain password every 3 months for a bullshit out of date security policy (there's plenty of evidence suggesting that changing passwords is actually worse security), then maybe, just FUCKING maybe, make sure that that password change appropriately filters down to things like SQL Server so I can keep doing my goddamn work.

I think a good path to dev education is if you are interested in it as a teen and try out coding and keep failing. Persistence and interest will bring you farther than just going straight to uni/dev school.

Another (primarily back end) developer is helping out on my (mostly front end) project amends because I'm too busy with others. Should be a blessing but really I'll have to keep going to check on him or answer questions about the project. :/

So I snapped during pointing session and told the BA that I didn’t have time to explain software engineering to the team….then they proceeded to make up new requirements that the client didn’t ask for which resulted in more complex error handling that presents the user with a list of generic message; I try really hard to keep implementation details out of those meetings, because all it does is bog down the team and waste time, but I suppose I fell into that trap.

whenever I suspend my laptop my openvpn would get stuck on reconnecting and I'd have to ctrl c and wait for like minutes so it would correctly close. so I only used VPN when I really needed it.

but then I found out: mullvad (my VPN host supports wireguard! and so wireguard is a more passive protocol, and doesn't need to keep open the connection. so now I can just set my VPN to "always on" and not worry about it anymore, yay!

Why did you guys decide to become a developer?

I became a developer after finding out that I loved wrecking my brains on complicated puzzles to keep me from getting depressed. After a while I figured out that I'm the person that needs to be challenged to actually be able to enjoy something and start to overthink the little things.

Here are the things I wreck my brains over on a weekly basis.
- programming
- research on complicated subjects
- magic the gathering

Companies are laying workers off these days like it's nothing.

My company dismissed (just within my department) 90 out of 129 workers — that messed me up.

However, though, my team experienced just a partial effect: 2 Senior devs are needed out of 3 — mid and junior devs are going. I literally had to re-interview for my role again, since they need to keep only 2 senior engineers.

To cut the long story short, I was the first selected candidate — grateful I still have my job. But, I'm sad to see the disruption.

I understand that at the end of the day, it's all business, but mehnnn ...

How do you deal with a boss that is not very intelligent, but fights you, your team, executive management and project stakeholders on critical system design decisions?

Everyone else is worn out, the project is long overdue and I'm running out of energy, myself. Do I just do what everyone else does and let him have his way and prepare myself to deal with the imminent problems ahead, or do I keep fighting for a well designed system that customers will enjoy using?

Just an advice:

Keep in mind that you can now have ES modules in nodejs with the esm package. And it's a zero config install.

For those that don't know, in js ES modules is the import/export syntax and is a huge upgrade from cjs (the require syntax) because you find out "pre runtime" when a specific import is non existent.

Trying to use a coworker's new API endpoint and I keep getting an "OAuth2 Bearer Token missing" error, despite triple-checking that I set the Authorization header correctly... finally dig into the source code and I find out that all their endpoints require that the bearer token be put into the request body. The fuck?

Just found out that I have been reassigned to maintain an in house shitty project... It's full of crap code, no documentation, has lot of duct tapes to keep the project together and 20+ open bugs and issues...

I am so happy with my current project. But my manager is always pissed off at me for no apparent reason.

My driver's ed Course is online. It is a 32 hour course so in order to go through every slide you have to wait for a timer to countdown. The way they keep you from advancing is graying out the next button.

Because I just found out that you can change the button class to active in the Chrome inspector. You can continue.

The shocking part is is that there is no server side verification, so I could complete the entire hour course in less than 30seconds.

Marketing department sometimes are so Fucking annoying in the context of they " just found out certain technology" and try to enforce us to implement.

For example recently this guys just found out firebase(Firestore thingy ) and keep asking us to implement into the app (E wallet app) which our software architect refuse to use firebase( I agree with him) because in the long run , the project will definitely get surprising prices in the invoice.

Also, our DBA had started to implement Apache Cassandra .....

So dear marketing department, why don't you guys shut up and let us do our job and let our software architect do his job? Fuck off!

Scrum master sending another reply to look into the matter on High priority.

We again double checked for the customer but he is not registered on the new website.

Apparently, both scrum master and support team and entire company is aware that our team is not working for legacy website.
But No one reads the email properly and keep forwarding to dev team disturbing the entire team.

Some times things like this are done by product manager and her associate, but they keep replying to each other on unnecessary things till they come to conclusion and scrum master try hard to keep up with them with his own agile disciplines.

So long story short, I bought a license for a very popular web app theme a few years ago in the hopes that I'd someday use it to make a full fledged app that i can use as a showcase for my skills. Day in and day out, they keep sending me updates for the said theme, only for me to download it and then leave it to rot somewhere deep in the trenches of my hard drive, never to be heard of again until i run out of space and have to clear some stuff out. And then i proceed to delete it, thinking its ok coz i can download a new version when they send the next update. The last one that I downloaded was 9GB. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Family wasn't very supportive of my first choice (Film Directing) and since I live in Latin America and both of my parents come from very poor families, they pushed me to engineering in order to make money and live a better life than they did.

Even though it was not my initial call and they were not very supportive of my first choice, once I started CS they gave me everything I needed to keep on studying.

Overall, I think that for a lot of coders out here from third world countries, we can agree that engineering was not our first call, but it's mostly a way to get out of poverty and into a field that gives you advantages over others.

P.S.
I am using a paid password manager, but keep asking myself is it really worth it, and am I compromising all my passwords if someone is willing to spend some time and hack my vaults. On the other hand the convenience and benefit of having all passwords in one place and also using different strong passwords for each of my accounts protects me from a weak security implementation on any third party service I use, because I am not re-using the same password everywhere.

When it goes down it goes down, I can't do anything about it, I keep reminding everyone to keep a copy of their stuff on the NAS so they have access to it when this happens, no one ever listens to me! The only person that uses the NAS is me...

For a Web project I usually start with copying a minimal boilerplate node app, find some api I wanna use, copy paste a single example of some data I wanna display and render something on a html page as fast as possible. Seeing stuff on a page motivates me to keep going and helps me figure out the most essential direction forward.

What the hell is wrong with recaptcha? It is solely there to be a nuisance, especially if I use a 2FA device. I do not fear hacking attempts against my username+password, because the 2FA will keep the lucky guess out.

So in my experience, coding while I'm not sober actually helps out sometimes. I always end up documenting my code way more so that I can keep track of what I am doing, and the code I write is actually decent.

I've gone through so many tiling wm this semester and can't figure out what I like best...
i3, bspwm, xmonad, windowchef, herbstuffwm, awesomewm, fvwm, etc.

I love the cleanliness and productivity aspect of them compared to something like Windows and it's floating/snap feature. Awesomewm looks like a good choice but the config scripting is quite verbose.

So many choices! Probably doesn't help I want to keep it consistent across my laptop and 3 monitor setup (1 21:9, 2 16:9).

Story time: Once I sent our android developer a project that he was supposed to compile and install on a test device. On my machine everything worked perfectly but on his machine ADB would keep failing to install the apk. After an hour of scratching our heads we figured out what happened:

He had just received a new Chinese action camera from Amazon and plugged it into his PC to charge. Turns out it's running rooted Android and runs ADB Debug mode by default. So the build script would try to deploy our phone app to his action cam instead of our test device

I have a client who I do web design and hosting for. He texted me at 5am to tell me that his website "was no longer working" and he wanted me to fix it. He got mad and threatened to cancel his services because we couldn't "keep his site up". It turned out that he let his domain name expire. I am not a morning person and that was my only day off. I guess that's what you call self employment.

Fuck it, go ruin your own life, I don't deserve this shit.

I don't deserve getting treated like shit by my mother for financially helping her, in fact, bringing all the fucking money in this household to the table.

I don't deserve being gaslighted by some hypocrite who victimized or egos themself up to fit their narrative.
