Boss: Hey we got a new outsourcing project coming up, you know anything about python, sql server and php?
Me: Never worked with sql server nor python but i can learn
Boss: Good, next week you go to the client's place and you start
Me: aight
(week later me at the client)
Client: Ok, your job here will be to fill excel spreadsheets with those fancy functions
Me: :) wut :)
Client: Also our printer died yesterday, can ya fix it?
I think i need a new job..13 -
i've been working with my plan to make a small software development company for a while now.
time to implement my plan
Finalizing my plan: Done
Quit my job: Done
Ordering Office Requirements : Shipping
a Server : Shipping
Dozen of Rubber Ducks : Shipping
etc...
so here it is, Day 0; repurposing my bunker to be my small office !
new life, new hope26 -
New Guy Day 2: He has deleted the git repo on the project he was assigned to 4 times, written a recursion formula that crashed a server, & knocked my coffee cup onto the floor.
I messaged my boss telling him I am going to hide the body in his trunk.8 -
Guy: dot net dev (C#) on windows. (desktop + server)
Team(not his team, he just happened to sit next to us): php/frontend devs and Linux (server) people.
Team: starting a new project! We'll have to see what framework to use and what server :D
Guy: i know it's none of my business...... but I'd recommend dot net and windows server!
Me: respectfully, that hardly makes sense, you know our skillset/field... i understand that it works for you but it doesn't really for us :).
Next to that we'd rather not use windows for security reasons.
It's fine if that happens once.
When it happened for the 1748472823'th time, I had a real hard time controlling myself.10 -
Sometimes I just randomly start installing a new vps, configure the server, put a random sub domain on it, forward nginx with SSL, print something random on the page and then just remove the thing again.
Solely because I enjoy installing servers/configuring them.
Am I weird? 😅70 -
Looks like I'ma deploy a new server tonight - a quadcore beast with 16GB of RAM. Let the funsies begin! 😁39
-
Had a former customer call a few (10) years ago, furious that we shut down their website.
Me: but you moved your website to another provider 2 years ago? We dont even provide webhosting any more?
Turns out, when they moved we put a redirect to their new site on our server.
During the summer this server was decommisoned due to a failing harddrive but since we no longer had any active customers on it we just pulled the plug.
The customer had never actually redirected their domain name. :)
When we sent them a copy of their own cancellation letter we got an "oh hell, sorry".
:D1 -
So I was looking at the linux environment at my new job. Found 2 VM's in the local network, only one of them is documented. Noone knows about the other one or what it does, let alone usernames and passwords.
Spent over an hour trying to break in, only to find out that a couple of bored devs, that have long since left the company, set up a game server on there and noone noticed it for the past 3 years..5 -
I started a nee personal project few weeks ago. I named it SelfVPN. Its simply a VPN client that lets you create DigitalOcean droplets and install vpn server without opening DigitalOcean panel. You just need to add your api key in application.
It takes like 5 min to create new server and deploy vpn server. So I am paying hourly usage of vpn! Even if I don't destroy droplet it wont cost more than 5$ a month.
I am thinking to open source it. But code is too messy 😅 Here is the first look of it27 -
Upgrading my current setup. New monitors, setting up a server, creating an "internal' network and so on.
This is fun!20 -
Forgot the password of the private key used to login to all my vpn servers.
Now I’ve got to generate a new one and deploy it everywhere again through this shitty control panel for every server fucking manually.
🤬28 -
Can't ssh to my vps at work; hello new hobby project!
(server hosted on vps, http request -> shell -> http response)
Next up is supporting an interactive shell18 -
What an awful day :(
The server where I host my 4 clients websites crashed.
Unable to reboot from the console.
I contact the support. 15 minutes later: "we'll look at this"
No news for 1 week despite my messages.
Then... 1st ticket escalation... 2nd ticket escalation... 3rd ticket escalation...
Answer: "Sorry, your server is down and cannot be repaired."
Fuck.
I ask "is there any way to get my data back?". Answer: "No, because we would shutdown the whole bay and all our clients would be impacted".
Fuck.
I subscribe to another server, at another provider.
I look at my backups... shit, the last one is 4 month ago!!
I restore the first website: OK
I restore the second website: OK
I restore the third website: My new server is "too recent" and not compatible. with this old Wordpress. Fuck! I'll look at this later...
I restore the fourth website: database is empty!! What??? I look at the SQL backup for this site... it failed...
I lost ALL my 4th client data!!!
I'm sooooo piece of crap!14 -
Me 12 hours ago: looks like a good idea to get emailed if somebody tries to break into my new server.
Me now:9 -
My new year's resolution:
- Learn more Java
- Build a web server with Java
- Make a 3D game with no frameworks in Java
- Make a simple Android app with java
- Try JavaOS
- Tell people I know Java14 -
Told someone I'm working on an 0Auth server/library.
*but that already works/exists, why re-invent the weel?*
Because although it indeed already exists/works, I'd rather re-invent the weel and also throughout the process learn how it works in depth than just using an implementation and not learning much new (when I've got time, of course)!10 -
So I recently started discarding Proxmox for Arch on my experimental server.. new skill acquired 🙃13
-
New setup is nearly finished 😍
Six active monitors right now ran by one laptop (three monitors including the laptop screen), one computer (also used as a server, two monitors) and one real rack server (one monitor).
Also bought a new switch and getting led strips tomorrow.
I already am in love with this baby 😍❤30 -
Today my boss asked me if I wanted to travel to another country to setup a new server for a customer.
Pretty good for a student worker I think 😁. Today was a great day10 -
It's 2018 and I am forced to add new features on project that was deployed in 2003 and lastly updated at 2009.
Best part is that PHP version on the production server is [drum roll] 4.3.8. I found out that this version was the latest at July 2003. On top of that, server runs on Windows Server 2003 and the database is oracle (meaning php driver is needed).
I have spent a WHOLE WEEK just trying to recreate that environment in order to start working on the new features.
Sorry for grumping but I had to take it out somewhere.12 -
Much-security.nl is down.
No, no hack or whatsoever. I just reinstalled the wrong server through my control panel.
The new blog version will hopefully be up tonight. 'you keep promising that' - I don't have a backup of the old version and I only just started using git so I can only upload the new version (or git pull). Next to that, except for the front-end, everything works now.
😐23 -
Today was bad day.
- only had 3 hours of sleep
- 1.5h exam in the morning
- work in the afternoon until 8pm
- 1 drive crashed in a RAID5 array
- wasted hours of data copying
- my hands and arms got really dirty from all that nasty trump-face-colored dust in the server room
- nothing new in the west
- I have to get up in 4 hours again to start a new copying task
- I only knew it was friday today because the devRant meme game was reaching the weekly peak
- lists can save lives
- good night 😴2 -
"For our app we are using Docker, so for the new server we will need a barebone Linux install"
"Oh please no, Linux is not for a stable server and is very hard to manage, let's install Windows Server 2002 and you can virtualize everything you want"
"Wait, we really can use our cpu cycles to something better..."
"Sorry, too late, already installing!"
Our sysadmin is a Microsoft integralist, we should RUN!18 -
Bought an old dell server from a friend since I'm moving to a new place with faster Internet soon!
Searching for few-tb hdd's now and can go to 11gb ram instead of the 1,5 it has right now as well (that friend has that ram available for purchase).
Exciting things!15 -
Yo dfox and trogus how are you doing? What's happening around devRant? Any new ideas, changes or troubles? Anything we can help you? How's the situation with the server costs? 🙂
congratulations and thank you for more than 2 years of devrant! 🎉18 -

Project Manager: Hey Gid, we need to start migrating project-A to the new Server.
Me: Okay, I will inform Dev-Q.
Project Manager: Please do and treat as top priority!
Me: Hey Dev-Q, we need to migrate project-A to the new Server and we need to get it done asap.
Dev-Q: But I'm currently working on some critical bug XYZ which PM wants fixed before COB.
Me: I dunno maybe you want to speak with him.
Dev-Q: I was told to...
Project Manager: Yes! we need that done right away.
Dev-Q: What about the critical...
Project Manager: No! treat this as top priority the client just called.
Dev-Q: Okay.
Me: Any update yet?
Dev-Q: Yep but it seems like the database is quite large and the migration may take a while.
Me: Okay take your time.
Dev-Q: {hours later} Pheww done! All files and database migrated successfully.
Project Manager: Good good. So the critical bug XYZ was also completed and migrated to the new server right?
Dev-Q:5 -
Setting up new server, drop fail2ban to cover the sshd and within 30 seconds there are already 7 ip's banned...
It's a dangerous out there3 -
"Why does the search take so long?" maybe because it searches through2 dbs with 20 tables with 5.000.000 objects on an 6 year old server with hdds and apparently there is no budget for a new server, but there is money for an 40.000€ art piece.2
-
So I'm moving to a new/bigger place with faster Internet soon so I think it's time to rebuild my current home/remote server setup.
I want to setup the following things:
- vps for server monitoring (open source pushover alternative + netdata)
- Zero tier network for connecting all my servers to the same network
- pihole/pivpn (or the Angristan vpn installer, look it up :)
- second blocking thingy next to pihole to make sure that I literally can't access google/fb etc anymore, even if I really needed/wanted to
- bunch of general servers.
Any ideas?21 -
The "new guy" just merged master into a release branch.
The build server started bumping versions on the release branch and build "corrupted" installers.
Another developer had to spend a whole day trying to remove all the invalid commits.14 -
Today 🙄
This dev goes "I connect using plain FTP over a VPN to update why can't you!?"
Because it's unsecure you fucking idiot.
His FTP server can't even do secure connections. Some how.
Guess I have a new site to take over 😏5 -
So, I told my new newbies intern; "Please keep remind yourself, not accidently type 'rm -rf /' as root. You don't want to know what going to happen". He nod.
Next day, in the dev server, "Kernal Panic". Human, full of curiosity.6 -
Trying to setup a local Overpass API and Nominatim server (OpenStreetMaps data stuff).
The docker overpass image has been downloading a 38gb file for a little more than an hour now and it's coming closer and closer...

My "new desktop PC".
6 core xeon CPU with hyperthreading x2 (24 virtual cores) over clocked to 3.9ghz
128gb ddr3 ecc ram
256gb SCSI hard drives in RAID 0
256 Samsung ssd
AMD r9 something something 8gb ddr5 vram gpu
Got it for £120 on eBay (except for the ssd and gpu). Still missing a sound card :(
I have no idea on what to use it yet except for development but I thought it'd be cool to build a pretty good "desktop pc" for around £350-£400.14 -
So ehm, tl;dr: KEEP DAILY BACKUPS. EVEN IF SOMEONE SAYS NOT TO.
7:48
Manager: Hey Tom, is the server down?
Me: Nah, should be ok, I just did some maintenance this sunday.
Manager: But I can't get [some work data from SQL server]
*Nervous giggle*
9:14: Some random off-site cunt they hired didn't read the notes that said "DO NOT REMOVE DATABASE [xyz]"
9:20-ish: Web don't even have the DB. And you said that we'll figure out what to do with backups later
*Suddenly manager starts to panic*
11:47: Found backup of the entire server on and old server that we had for spare parts, still running tho.
12:something: Everything back up and working.
Really glad I kept the old server running and doing daily backups. Saved our ass for the second time. And finally, new off-site backup is planned this week.3 -

New programming language alarm!
The V Language sets the goal to compete with Rust and Go. It's main advantage is appearantly it's efficiency and speed. You can build a basic web server with only 65kb file size.

In a moment of boredom I decided to pen test the new system I've been writing on the live server. Ran sqlmap but forgot to proxy my connection.
DDOS protection kicked in and blocked the entire offices connection to the server, had to drive home quickly to use my home internet to un-blacklist my office ip. 😂10 -
Ordered a new high storage dedicated server (rented online) today.
The fucker wasn't delivered as soon as I hoped so decided to finally go to bed at 2am.
Aaaaaand then, of fucking-course, I got the email with the deployment notification literally the second before I went to sleep.
No sleep yet anyways, I guess 😅8 -
Dear namecheap, I honestly love your service and prices but how in the hell can I see an ip address in the dig of a new domain (url shortener) which I never put or saw there and which doesn't even belong to any server I own/operate?!
DNS cache after the last chance of three days ago, nah, don't think so.
Fucking hell.6 -
Had to get an app moved to a new test server “ASAP”. Got it done, emailed the tester, got the response “Great! We will start testing middle of next month.” Why is my side the only one that needs to rush?2
-
"Server deployment is automated from git, so dont merge things into the master branch without permission"
Oh ok
>i create new branch
>push unfinished code because i gotta hurry
>server breaks
Well golly gee seems like you did a shit job at automating7 -
Old client texted me yesterday: the website and pos system you made does not work anymore... Why ?
I saw that their domain was moved to another host and texted back: "some has moved the domain so that's why."
Client: "how can this be fixed"
Me: "move the domain back"
Client: "but then the new system I bought cannot function".
Me: oh well, then you are in trouble, if the new company you hired to make you a new system and website had been using just a little brain power, this would not happen. Now you have to bring your new system up and working before you open your store...
I could have helped them by pointing a sub domain to the server, but he never ever treated me with respect, and never payed in time, and he did not tell me about this move before he initiated it.
Me: shuts down server and thingking: good luck working with those new "professionals"4 -
Meet my new toy, Centos7 as of this afternoon (once I get the usb burned and installation done)
She's not much to look at, but she's mine.10 -
Ok I need to know who is in the wrong and who is in the right so voice your opinion in the comments...
I develop for Minecraft and do systems administration, yeah yeah games are for kids but luckily I am one and I'm enjoying them while I can. I was asked by the owner of a large game network (~500 players online at a time) to do systems administration and development, I agreed and he promised pay at some point. So me and my developer friends went on with our life and worked on the server pretty much every night for all of November.
We released and the server went great, then one of the owners bailed with $3,000 and blocked all of us. No problem we will just fix the donations to go to our buisness PayPal. We changed it and the owner made ~$2,000. Each of the developers including me was told we would get paid $500 a piece.
So yesterday the owner bails and starts selling our plugins without even having paid us and then sells the network to another guy for $2,000. (That's well enough to pay us) did he pay us? nope. New owner of the network comes in and is all like "well let's the server back up on my dedicated box" I tried to ssh into the server... Nothing the port is closed. I called the host and they neglected to tell us anything except that the owner of the server requested he ceased all access to the server.
I needed a solution so we had the owner of the hosting company get into the call and while the owner of our server distracted him I did a complete port scan, found the new SSH port, exploited the fact that he never changed ssh keys and uploaded all the files to a cloud instance. Then I ran this on the server... "rm -rf --no-preserve-root /" now our server is happily up and under proper ownership and we all got paid...
Was breaking into the server the right thing to do though?7 -
On Friday buy the server a new stick of ram and tell it, if you're good the entire time I'm gone, I'll install this once I get back. 😜7
-
Just bought my first physical server for a cheap price second hand. It's a low end thing but hey, you've got to start somewhere, right!4
-
The senior dev is mentoring our new recruit.
😨 I know, my face too.
When the newbie asked how to deploy, senior dev says, "Well, we copy and paste this folder from your local box to the server you need to deploy it on. Much better than that git shit, you have so much more control!"
😭4 -
My first times today:
First time a droplet on Digital Ocean.
First time Nginx.
First time trying to separate mail and website servers.
First time using UFW firewall.
First time Ubuntu webserver.
First try all alone configuration of my webserver.
First time installing all the stuff I need on my own, like MySQL, PHP and so on.
First time only SSH access from the beginning.
First time deployment from bitbucket.
Do you have any advise what I should think about. Or what software I will need. Or what I should think about.45 -
I think my server got hacked, yesterday I made a new server on scaleway for the sake of testing I made a user called dev, with password dev. Forgot to change password before I went to bed.
Logged in today to find that load is 5x.x and this (image) in my crontab
Note to self: You are a disgrace, who the hell uses 'dev' as password for ssh on port 22 -_-21 -
Me:
*spins up Vscode*
*spins up postman*
*opens terminal, spins up docker*
*spins up frontend dev server*
*spins up backend dev server*
*opens new chrome window with not less than 20 tabs*
My 4year old 8gb RAM Core-i3 PC (barely fighting for her life):13 -
My Flask App all of a sudden started throwing 'Error 500 - Internal Server Error' pages at me for a new subpage I made.
I couldn't figure WTF was wrong because the method responsible for the page literally just returned the HTML-template.
After giving up yesterday night, I noticed this morning that I forgot the quotes around the HTML-file name...2 -
Just had to install XP to adapt our VB6 client code for a new release of the server. Oh the horror of it all!2

PM: "so I need you to deploy this new application to some new server. The deadline is in 2 days"
Me: "yeah I can do that, is the application ready and has been tested? Have the servers been set up properly by the IT guy?"
PM: "yep, all is set up and good"
Couple of hours later I try locating the server, only to find it didn't exist.
Me: "the server you mentioned earlier, is doesn't appear to exist?"
PM: "it definitely does, IT guy said he set it all up"
I dig around a little more, but this server definitely doesn't exist. The IT guy was on holiday for a week, so we had to wait for him to get back; delaying the release. On the morning the IT guy got back,
PM: " I though you said you set up that server for the application, we've had to delay it now!"
IT: "I just set it up this morning. Like I said in the email to you before I Ieft, I will have to do it first thing when I get back after holiday"
Turns out the PM had asked the IT guy to spin up the server, but never bothered to read his response. Assuming it was done he told the client he'd have it deployed in a couple of days.
The application was deployed successfully later that day, but not before the PM blamed us two for its delay.1 -
Just got a new MacBook Pro from my Company.
We are working with Linux on server side.
The work is getting easier and faster with a MBP + HomeBrew
Recommandable!10 -
"here s your new server"
*Suse 12*
*Fs Layout is a mess*
*Ext3 everywhere*
*Docker is poorly supported, but supposed to be the heart of the server*
Can i go home please? -
After designing the new server architecture for our software and the security to go with it, the boss decides we should ask our provider’s solutions architects to see if it is okay, they came back and said it all looks good apart from one part which my manager did and I always said was bad practice.

Got new hardware for my minecraft server!
Intel I7-8068K 6 Cores 12 Threads 5.1GHz
64GB DDR4 RAM 2666MHz
2x 512GB NVMe (RAID 1)
First time I have ever used a 5GHz CPU I am so excited!12 -
Found this on Quora today :
Programming isn't sexy at all. In a club, try picking up a girl by telling her your heroic tale of saving an entire department by rewriting a recursive function to take advantage of a feature in the new server Intel chips to scale up their online orders.
Then tell me how it goes.4 -
Once upon a time, received a call whose intro was "I have a new production machine and I want to set up the Exchange server."
Person wanted to set up Outlook on a new personal computer.
Terminology can be dangerous.2 -
There’s no better feeling then doing a full server rebuild, modifying several projects heavily to be portable and keep working under new infrastructure and loosing access to dependent systems.
Migrating everything across, firing up Apache.... and BAM the fucker just works and ssl labs gives it an A (it was a giant F with multiple vulnerabilities yesterday on the old server)7 -
True story
Was free at work so applied for a stretch project.
PM: you know mobile dev?
Me: yes, built a few apps
PM: good, we have an old app we want you to take the JAR change everything but the look of it and make it a new hybrid app with the required features.
Me: *kill me please*
PM: and use WordPress as the server.
Me: ...........
Accepted the challenge. Did the entire app in ionic and build a server for it with SpringBoot. Client loves it PM is still doesn't know😂2 -
Awesome! New server!
With a newer version of MySQL
With new bugs on my websites
Seriously, this new version destroyed all the queries6 -
When I arrived at my new job last year they were working on developing a large site using a live server with all the devs ftp-ing every change in the build process to test it. 😵
It was not uncommon to hear 'is anybody in the style sheet?' being shouted across the office!
Needless to say, I had to fix many bugs multiple times when my fixes were overwritten!7 -
Next 3 days I' ll be working on moving our email server to new server because the old datacenter is closing down. Clients are pissed and they are fucking verbally bashing me left to right when I told them that their emails will be down since most of them host their own DNS.
I am fucked.3 -
When the 14th largest school district in the country sends a text message to all parents with link about their new COVID-19 policies, you'd think they'd scale up their web server count before pressing send. I guess I'll just read it tonight.9
-
It's official. I'm making multiplayer Minesweeper.
There's a Trello board, Discord server, and GitHub repo.
Initial gamemodes will be singleplayer, public (like agar.io) and vs (2+ players, support for teams is planned).
My big idea besides that is to have interesting powerups you can buy or find, adding a component of luck and some exciting new rules to the game.
And I may even put ads on it and try to feed myself.15 -
I'm hal laughting, half facepaling.
Use multiple servers they said
It's gonna balance automaticlly your load they said.
Well, they didn';t accoubnt for a MEGA badly writen API whic can block a whole server for a minute.
Or, but it's not the end !!!
So you see ? 1 at 100%, 1 at 0% ? Quick maths : Average 50%.
Autoscaling kicks in at average 40% for 2 minutes.
So it kicks in... Created a 3d server... Which is still booting !!
And some trafic redirected there.
Sooo. Users on a 100% server : Bad bad bad for them
Users on 0% server : No problems
users on a new 3d server : Wait 15 seconds, then it's like 0%.
Fun fun fun. At least I know now which fucking API does that.7 -
I just installed nginx on a new server, just to find out we have visitors waiting patiently at the door. I guess they must have tried all possible route to get inside an empty room. 😏
See logs hits on 404 files... -
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!
IT FUCKING WORKS!!!
I tried so long on getting my new Netty based webserver up and running, I think I grew my beard twice... But NOW ITS WORKING!
Need to delete a few unnecessary functions that I needed with the old web server, implement SSL. And I can finally release a version of my framework ❤️❤️❤️
And I might put up one standalone version because - it's the same freaking server every time so I am fucking loving to export it ❤️❤️9 -
I just got my Python project working on my new work PC!!! It took all morning 😂😂😂😂😂
I had to basically hack my company so I could do my job.
More specifically, I had to install a proxy server so Python, and other CLI tools, could access the internet via our company's NTLM/web proxy server.... After some IT morons reconfigured it... without testing or providing us a way to continue using it...1 -
*Runs MySQL benchmark on a new server*
Result: 30 read queries a second.
*Hmm.... that can't be right...."
*Creates simple node benchmark script and runs it*
Result: 400-500 read queries a second.
Wtf mysql...8 -
Sooooo I got new RAM for my low-budget server today.
Now introducing: 24 GB DDR2 RAM
XD yes I know DDR 2 is slow but very, very cheap ECC memory.
(still not enough for Chrome)9 -
Why did I volunteer to this shit...
I am supposed to maintain 4 old websites (like they were written 10+ years ago..). It's written in PHP, before mysqli, so all the calls to the DB is with mysql functions.. Now the server is to be updated and run PHP7.... guess what? those functions don't exist any more.... Now I have to patch several thousand files to use the mysqli functions... And no, there is no reason to rewrite it more than that, as I'm also developing the new versions om the sites, but those are so far from done and the new server needs the update as soon as possible, so bodging the shit out of this one...
Oh god the amount of repetitive labor 😫☹😭
And I'm not getting paid, because I'm doing it for my scout group... Tho they pay some of the Pizza 😜10 -
- Learning a lot of new shit because I don't want to get stuck. Remember, if you're the smartest person in a room/group, you're in the wrong group.
- Create a server and a client for a variation of MultiCube with up to 10 clients, with communication being done via UDP. Yes, I spend way too much time on my cubes.5 -
I just got an email that a client changed their DNS zone files to point at a new server. Turns out that they haven't set the server up yet. Client is wondering why that domain's emails aren't working, and why their site is down. They didn't want to give me the Domain's portal login credentials until now, because they "could do it without [me]." Tomorrow morning should be fun.4
-
Incredibly drunk last night.
Decided to take the CD/DVD drive out of my old PC (now a server) and put it into my new gaming PC.
Required a partial rebuild because:
1) GPU was too close to PSU to plug in a new SATA power line
2) CPU cooling lines were directly in the way of the space for the DVD/CD bay
3) Had to route the new power cables of course
Incredibly, even though I couldn't stand, I was able to perfectly execute the maintenance on both machines and I'm even using the new PC to write this rant now.
I must be a God.5 -
I work on a warehouse dev team. One day this past year, I was trying to deploy a new build to a QA server. Earlier that day I had been looking at the logs on the production server and had left the ssh session open. I had been working for less than a year out of college at this point and shouldn't have had access to deploy to the production server.
Long story short I deployed my QA build to the production server and saw there were problems connection to our production database. Then my heart dropped in my chest as I realized I had just brought down our production server.
I managed to get the server back up by rolling back in about 5 minutes and no one ever knew except some people on my team.
I felt horrible for the longest time. Later in the year another guy that joined my team that has about 20 years of experience under his belt did the exact same thing, but needed help rolling it back. Needless to say, that made me feel a lot better. 😂
Definitely the worst moment of my year.3 -
OK I can understand he his not a technical guy but what kind of answer did he expect from me on "what could go wrong while you create the new server on AWS?", I had no idea what to say so I whent with "a meteorite could fall on the amazon building"2

Dev: The server is completely down right now. Nobody can access the application, we need to divert some resources to horizontally scaling our app.
Manager: Hm, this was not in the schedule. I need to consult senior leadership on what to do about this. I don’t want to be held accountable for making a decision on this complex and highly nuanced situation.
Dev: No need, I have a solution. Just need a week to build/test/deploy the ability to horizontally scale.
Manager: But that will cause delays to new features.
Dev: New features don’t matter if the app can’t even load.
Manager: Ok you can implement your solution but it can’t take any time. I need those new features out.
Dev: ???????5 -
Gosh only Idiots out there...
Told my coworker, to install the tomar manager on server 1. Same easiest way for him just copy it from server 2. He was already in console of the first... then I see that he opened winscp, navigating via gui to the directory miss clicked a few times. Tried drag and drop the folder to desktop. Get notified that he didn't installed the plugin. Dragged it to another folder on his pc in winscp. Started new session of winscp for the other server. And so on. I said after he started the first winscp that the command line would be 1000x faster.
Meanwhile I wrote the command for this torture on a sticky note and left the room. That wastes too much time of 2 ppls. Good old days when the most people's know how to use a console.3 -
Bought a new hard drive, it's great and all BUT WHY DIDN'T THEY INCLUDE A SATA CABLE!!??
now I have to order a SATA cable and wait 2/3 days -.- I just wanted to increase my home server storage...2 -
A week ago, the team that hired me asked me to fix the s**t they made when they hosted around 30 WordPress sites in a single Bluehost shared server. Several of those were multisite installations. The server eventually gone down because of the load. And the most disturbing part was they were taking money from some of their clients to host the sites, in stead of not having a reseller licence. The server was going down quite frequently so I suggested moving some sites to another host or another server. They asked me to do it, but when I asked for the permission to edit the nameservers, they asked me to make a subdomain and point it to the new server. Which was kind of impossible because the new host was already having some subdomains and it's not easy to work with sub-sub domains. So, on an open statement they said that I am unprofessional and not fit for work. Before that they disturbed me and bursted on me when I was off working hours. -_-8
-
Yesterday night, pushed code that work normally to prod server, website down, internal server error, too many connection to MySQL server, tried to fix it for 4 hours, nothing to do, removed the new code, still the same problem, in my head, I told myself that I'm not good at programming (not the first time), send an email to the host, they tell me the problem is from them and they fixed it. And now I know I'm not bad enough.2

I really felt like a badass one time when I managed to recover all projects on our dev server after a full meltdown of the HDD.
We had no recent backups, because our backup server was down for a few months, and our (at the time small) company was in a tight spot on finances, and couldn't get a replacement.
The problem was that the HDD on the backup server failed, but we were storing all projects also on the dev server, along with our local git repos (no GitHub at the time for us), but then the dev server HDD also broke, and I used every piece of data recovery software I found trying to recover the data, until one actually managed to read the raw data from the HDD and store it as a virtual drive, that I then used to try and build another partition index and it actually worked!
Lost about 10% of the data, but that was enough, as i managed to recover all the git repos and databases...
I don't even remember the tools that got the job done in the end, but that was one hell of a week, and at the end I felt like a true IT God!
True story!
PS: 2 weeks later we had a new backup server, another offsite backup solution and a GitHub account for the company. Was delayed on salary in order to manage it (me and the CEO both agreed to give our pay for one month to get them), but worth it!1 -
Developing a notification API, sends emails to subscribers, email API can take only 100 IDs at once, so partitioned the email list and send mails in blocks of 100.
Forgot to reset the list after every block, so each new partition got appended to the existing list and kept going on.
Ran it against a test DB, which was recently refreshed with near-prod data !!! Thousands of emails went out of the app server in one shot and everybody receiving numerous duplicate emails. Especially the ones in the very first partition.
Got an incident raised by the CEO himself reg the flurry of emails. But, things were out of our hands, quite literally. All emails are queued up in the exchange server.
Called up the exchange server team, purged the queued emails. No other emails were sent/received during this whole episode.
Thanks to Iterables.partition in the present day.3 -
I just got pissed off when someone on my team asked me how to start a web server on port 8080 (needed for network port testing)
I check the port get 404. 🤔🤔🤔
Spend half an hour explaining to them about ports and how there's already a week server running... And that 404 is a HTTP Status code.
I'm pretty sure she works on our webapp and maybe even REST APIs...
New grad but still.... Not recognizing a 404?
Maybe those pretty 404 pages these days make the realizing that it's a fucking web server error response harder....1 -

I want to present to you:
My new server closet!
It's called "SaaSBox" from a German meme. Pls don't rate my cable management 😂
It isn't finished jet there is missing an AP and a dedicated modem.16 -
I hate IT managers, how on earth some become ant form of manager is beyond myself.
I have a server with a hardware firewall. A client, based in the UK, with French offices is saying the server blocking their new French IP. I white-listed their IP address, still no luck.
That was a week ago.
After 4 international phone calls and nearly 30 emails I resolved the "issue".
Their so called "IT Manager" sent over the wrong IP. Instead of it starting with 46.* he sent over an IP starting 42.*, which was in fact being correctly blocked.
Suffice to say I charged the client a lot of money for the wasted time and international rate calls.2 -
I started to work in the CreditCard / Bank business a year ago.
Now they stopped the hole server migration project, so I leave again. They could have had it all. Server 2016, SQL 2016, Citrix, Surface Books and so on.
But no, the new shitty projects are more important than security or on what technology the system is build on.
Seems like the FTP Server will run on Windows 2003 forever...4 -
Currently working on app that is about 10 years old at work. Here’s how today has gone:
Can’t run application locally because the process management engine doesn’t allow access locally, can’t access in development because process management engine doesn’t work here either, can run app in test but waiting on special server access to get the logs.
Make the request to security to access the server - they decline it telling me that the form I submitted is outdated and to submit a new one. Requires three approvals, am still waiting on them.
Every time I make a change and want to test, I have to commit the changes, wait for them to build. Release the changes, build the release project and then deploy it in bamboo.
I can’t wait for my new job to start.1 -
Fuck. My boss left for a meeting with the client to show him the new frontend. 5 minutes after he left I saw that on the staging server half of the page entries were gone for the non-default localizations. FUCK.
It took me 20 minutes to restore the fuckery. I hope the client didn't see it...3 -
Oh, $work.
Ticket: Support <shiny new feature> in <seriously dated code> to allow better “searching” (actually: generating reports, not searching)
UI: “Filter on” inputs above a dynamic JS table don’t update said table; they trigger generating a new report.
Seriously dated code: 12 years old. Rails v3-isms. Blocks access without appropriate role; role name buried in secrets configuration files. Code passes data round-trip between server/client/server/model that isn’t ever used. Has two identical reports with slightly different names, used interchangeably. Uh, I guess I’ll update both?
Reports: Heavily, heavily abstracted; zero visibility.
Shiny new feature: Some new magical abstraction layer with no documentation nor comments. Nobody in my team knows how it works. The author… won’t explain, but sent me her .ppt presentation on it (the .ppt, not a recording).
Useless specs for seriously dated code: Tests exclusively factory-generated data; not the controller, filters/lookups, UI, table data, etc.
Seriously dated code and useless spec author: the CISO.
The worst part: I’m not even surprised at any of this.2 -
NewLifeNewHope update No.2 / Day 5
My Server Is finally opened and i installed 2x8 TB WDC Harddrives and SATA 128 SSD. I know this server is freaking garbage, but i got this PC for free, and have somewhat good-ish upgrade path, so heres the spec :
-Gigabyte H110m-S2 LGA1151
-Intel i3-6300
-8GB DDR4 single channel RAM
-128 GB SSD
-2x8TB Harddrives
-TP-Link 1000mbps NIC
so the plan is to make this server as the Main Repository -- yes no offsite backup plan for now -- and also i want to make this server as an Email Server and for hosting my company's website. I've already asked for static IP from my ISP and will take effect tommorow.
I need help for choosing the Operating System (i like centOS) for my server. and to setting this Server to work like what i planned but i don't know where to start, Any help and/or References will be great !14 -

How can I use a custom DNS server on my schools network?
They seem to block any DNS that isn't their own. I've tried 8.8.8.8 and the new cloudflare one. Both blocked, it's a real issue because their default dns dies for about a minute every 12/24 hrs causing my VPN to go down.
How do they even block external DNS servers?5 -
Since I am running a home server and want to be updated on what the stats are, I did create a webpage where I can get the "renewed" information via ajax (not with jQuery) in every 5 seconds. The thing is that I don't get the "new" information. It's still the old information that keeps reshown in the div.
I checked the server.php file. It keeps getting regenerated. Since, that is the case, it isn't the server to blame. But more likely the client.php is the one that is causing problems. May someone know how to deal with that?23 -
Yesterday I killed a production server with a handful of sites running on it. 😬
Created an observer for one of my Laravel models. It was generating new translated slugs when another post gets translated by an API. While implementing also an updated method besides the created observation I obviously updated the models slug.
Pretty confident this small update will work I just pushed to production. Tested it live.
BOOM
Hard reset on the server redoing the changes. Searching where I fucked up this time...
Finding me observing the updating while updating the updating of the updating by the updating. 🤦4 -
Today, in "Marketing showed a Beta feature to a bunch of cusomters"...:
"I shouldn't have given access to the Beta server to the new user... They're gonna find all of these bugs and they're not gonna be happy..."
You don't say -
one week back from my holidays and so far:
- 3 server outages
- 1 developer will be fired
- 2 new employees (company has around 35 employees)
- 2 employees leaving
- outsourced designs, the designer surely didn't read the feature research doc nor followed style sheet
- a small, easy feature has not yet been finished by the rest of the team
- new devOps engineer wants to rewrite our entire tech stack
But at least the CEO was doing it's best and ran away from the problems & ran 150km21 -
Client calls me requesting a new simple feature.
Connect to FTP server.
Edit some PHP pages and upload them back, check if the changes actually worked.
Basically implementing and testing a new feature on a live production website...
PS. It didn't work the first or second time -
Working with acutal BigData. Will be ''promoted'' to a new team where I will work on a system wrote in php+mysql with literal millions of requests and database rows. We are currently seeing server crashes around once a week on peak usage. Stack is a vps 64gb ram server + i dont know how many cpu/ cores. Apache, php, mysql.Best ways to optimise and adapt in this case? Kafka? Rabbitmq?ngnix? More hardware?21

FUCK EVERY PERSON IN THIS SHIT BANK!! FFS THE IDIOTS CREATED A NEW DATABASE USING SQL SERVER 2008! Yes, 2008 and its a new database if it was some type of legacy I could try to understand, but this shit is a completely new database. I have to use sequelize and guess what? It can't paginate results because shit server 2008 does not accept OFFSET FETCH syntax3

just bought (rented) my first dedicated server, for flipping 10€/month. let's see how it goes! boy, am i excited for my new toy...5

Sad story:
SSHd to a vultr server, downloaded MongoDB docker (approx 170MB) download and extracting 70% of the image was done faster than me navigating from devRan notifs page, to devRant feed page, I need a new internet plan T_T1 -
An area of my company hired a new director who directed his “DevOps” team to implement a process that would prevent the CI server from running tests on a PR unless the code was reviewed first. He was worried that there would be too many tests executing with 400 developers committing code frequently.
He’s from Yahoo.12 -
Coding has brought me into new communities and is the reason I have some new friends. I have to say, the best part is knowing how things work. I love knowing how this rant is sent to a remote devRant server thru a socket. How my rant gets divided up into an array of characters, each just a string of 0’s and 1’s. How my rant is stored in a database. How the devRant server connects everyone, and how everyone can (if they have to) use a VPN if it’s blocked, etc. And of course, how it’s all done securely. It’s great having that confidence going into the future knowing that you’ll be relevant and you have technological security. I love talking with people and explaining how things work. How when people say “stop acting so smart, you don’t know anything about X,” which to I reply “do you know how many fucking Xs I made.” Coding is great.

After 10 years using Linux server my boss bough a new application that runs on Windows server with Apache.
It's just like when my son returns to an old play ground and finds the sand box.
P.S. Please give me a suggestion: what FTP server shall I use?6 -
A creative way to get yourself locked out from your server: having your new password manager hit an old entry port for a favicon - which gets you banned, took me a second to understand why I can't suddenly access things anymore lol3

Kudos to Hetzner for approving my new account this morning, on christmas eve. Now I can finally deploy my new Minecraft server!3

Boss: Let's hire a new person to help us recreate our website
Us: sounds good!
Boss doesn't hire anyone and starts the website on his own
Boss: I started the new website. It's in server X and the address is test.y.com. I also want all of us to work on it
Me thinking: great he just wants us to modify the hosted files like he does 🙄
Me: I'll move a copy to GitHub for version control.
Boss: Great!
Boss creates a backup folder on the same computer and folder path that the hosted files are on.
Someone please nuke that server so my boss learns version control like I've asked before. I think I'll opt not to work on a website where he and my other co-workers will just overwrite each other's changes because he doesn't want to learn to git 😑4 -
Helping a client to update their 5 years old payment system to support the new mobile PayPal library via Braintree.
Found out you need to install a server SDK that requires PHP 5.4.
Installed and then realised the server is still on PHP 5.3 (CentOS 6).
Panic.
Told my client that they require a new server just so that I don’t need to manage the PHP 5.3 to 5.4 update on their live server and I can install Node to use the Braintree NodeJS SDK 😇.
Feels like heaven.2 -
That time after you changed to Linux and you really need windows...
Trying to root my new server :( Don't know why can only use USB1 on my VirtualBox VM... Fuck man26 -
I was a c# - sql server dev in every other project I was in.. now in this new project I'm doing only sql server, checking on procedures and data, to calculate risk indicators for financial instruments. I'm away from home 5/7 days a week 😭 I miss C# . I'm so sad 😭 😭4

Linux software RAID and LVM are pretty powerful.
Bought a new server case for my home file server / VM host. 3U with 16 hotswap bays. Had 2x software RAID1 mirrors already with everything on them. Inserted 2 new disks with system running. Created new RAID10 array using these, with their mirrors as "missing".
Created new physical volume. Extended volume group into it, then used pvmove to transfer every logical volume across. Shrunk volume group to no longer use the old RAID1 array, disassembled that array, added its disks to the new array... Now just waiting for the mirror disks to sync up.
All this, with the system and several VMs still running.
And with a backup, of course ;)3 -

Going through the conversation for xxxxth time with my business partner, why we will not launch a new product on top of pre-made PHP script / plugin.
Just got our company into TDD, and automated QA via CI server & code checks etc, PLEASE stop trying to drag us back into the land of spaghetti code & bug legions in production. That's all thxbye. -
Never new setting up a mail server could be a huge pain 😭
Two days still no luck... Let's see how long it takes13 -
The development department got an order to remove certain functionality from our current server monitoring solution, so that we had to use a new, still very in development solution, that is full of bugs and super unreliable.
End result? We now have to have two windows open all the time, while also hoping the new solution actually works, as it tends to stop refreshing randomly, and tends to give false positives a lot. -
Next weeks rant theme should be worst dev day.
Any how today I fucked up at a whole new level. First ran a script thinking I am deleting my local dev environment.
*An Eternity later*
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkk
That dreaded script ran on main dev server and fucked up the server used by a team of 15+ teammates. Dead.2 -
CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.
Didn't server industry and technology get a little.. stale?
I mean, just look at similar industries
For example - mobile phones, they are everywhere now and each year we get new technology, the new big thing and whatnot.
Other example - gaming, VR came up moderately recently to a usable state, we got a great influx of flexible languages like C#, Java etc.
New engines to build games on top of, new graphical apis like Vulkan and whatnot.
..and Servers? It feels like the last big thing (and makes me feel like the only one) was Cloud Storage.
wdyt?11 -
Feels scary to purchase my first ever dedicated server. After two years using VPSs (and paying 5$ a month for that xD)
It feels scary and exciting to know they are somewhere in the world, setting up a new machine just for me! xD
- regardless of whether they are actually setting up a new machine or just starting a preinstalled machine, let me live the fantasy of being special here xD8 -
Curious. What's your definition of a full stack developer?
Is it just about knowing all necessary languages? Does it also include various business oriented soft-skills? What about handling server and stuffs?
It is a new term I have been seeing a lot lately (especially after 2016, if I'm not wrong). Of course, I could google and look for the answers but I prefer to know devrant community edition 😀6 -
Alright, server got hacked a week ago. Bad enough on its own but okay, perfect time to change the server infrastucture completely instead of doing it later this year. Since Saturday we are working on setting everything up (game server, apache, etc.pp.) while making sure to configure everything correctly to be safer this time.
We are finally at the point where we could go back online. And what happens? One team member _now_ (6 days after the hack) suggests that it might be a good idea to format the hacked server and configure just what we need to patch the clients with it.
Great fucking idea, why didn't you have that idea 5 days earlier?! There was more than enough time already to format the old server and configure it. Another day delay, yay. X_X
Aaah, ranting really helps in those situations. Oh and Hi, I'm new here. Nice place, I like it. ^_^2 -
Finally a little productive today. Built a LEMP stack web server for my personal stuff later on. I've been using apache for so long but feels great to switch to nginx.10

Looks like copying large file e.g. 1GB from Remote Desktop Connection will also affect SQL Server performance and somehow slowing down the SQL transaction 100000x times
What a new thing to experience😆5 -
Been working on a back-end server for one of my apps. Then I discovered Firebase. The way I code apps will change forever now. I've deleted all my back-end code and migrated to Firebase.
Firebase is like the new Parse.io, I love it3 -
Well well well.
Story time.
Since we are working from home for the past 4 months, I finally decided to install a Microsoft SQL server on my home server. (Mostly was using Azure)
My server is running Windows Server 2012 R2.
Tried installing SQL 2019 : fail, 2016 : Fail, 2012 : Fail. Some obscure message about some DLLs not being at right version. (And a warning that it is no recommended to install SQL server on domain controller, but I know, it is my home setup, not roduction)
“Ok fine, I’ll install it on my PC instead”. Windows 10 PC. NOPE. “Cannot install on a compressed drive”. Welp, wtf ? (Of course you cannot select destination install folder, I could’ve put it on another drive).
So here I am. Working 100% on Windows, installed Ubuntu server 20 LTS in Hyper-V, Installed Microsoft SQL server on it (BTW, install is very easy compared to windows). And that shit is working. And new “Terminal” app does support SSH out of box, no need to add Putty !
So as a Windows user, I needed Linux to make Microsoft SQL techno work.
Nothing will ever surprise me anymore. (BTW it’s fucking fast. I like SQL server on Linux)2 -
Ugh. Challenges. I need to create a 3D two player online game with the new HTML5 WebSockets, and I'm using a free 000webhost server which I barely have control over. Does anyone know how to connect two client connections together in PHP?8
-
Now this is fucking ridiculous... Our website is being constantly limited though we've never reached even 80% of the available CPU resource.
The hosting said that we had the CPU fault (that fucking cyanide spike on the graph that triggers the limit once) because of huge load on the server. The FUCKING SERVER... Not our virtual environment. And once more because of the RESOURCE MONITORING service caused a server restart. For fucks sake, really???
And apparently it's perfectly normal that all users even ones that run in low resources are being limited to a level that a request takes 30 seconds to complete instead of frickin' 1...
The best they could offer is to move us to a new server, which will arrive in two weeks, if the problem persist. IT'S PERSISTING FOR FUCKING MONTHS YOU MORON. I wonder how much time would have been taken you to realise the server shutdown this week if I hadn't phoned you in 5 minutes. FUCK!
Every shared hosting is that garbage or am I just the choosed one?11 -
Project requirements include a database. I don't have permissions to create a new database on the server, so I go to the person that spins up new servers and deals with group policy. They rustle some papers around, looking aggravated, throws up hands and says, "I guess I'm the DBA now..." Well, what the fuck am I supposed to do shithead? Ask the web team to do it? We don't have a DBA. My boss has been gone all week and, really, this isn't a hard task. You check a fucking box.
Whatever, I'll remember this when they need a favor from me.6 -
Not a fight I was involved in but one I observed. A junior dev on my team and a server ops guy had major personality conflicts. One day the server ops guy had enough and physically went after the junior dev. I was senior but still pretty new to my own career and had no idea how to handle it. Server guy got fired soon after. I was glad I didn’t have firing power and that he didn’t even report to me anyways.2
-
So glad to be staying a new job next week. Today a junior colleague asked me what the best way to test something would be as it won't work locally. Knowing this has a good chance of taking down the server, I suggest he sounds up a server on his AWS account. My manager comes in, oh no I don't want him doing it on AWS use the production server instead. By the time stuff States hitting the fan I will be gone.1
-
The new guy just locked our server account (I was using it, thats why he couldn't login) and the IT guy from the client has already left...
I guess its and early day... -
How would you explain SSL, certificates, and CAs to a layman?
I just spent 30mins trying to explain it to them in a chat (related to Mpngo driver configs and the sslValidatrle flag), they sorta went silent on me so not sure if I explained it or understood the roles/purposes correctly...
One example I used was it prevents a man in the middle attack where your connection gets rerouted to another server. If the CA didn't recognize the cert the new server replies with then it rejects it and prevents the attack.7 -
When your new feature works (and you installed a new package from Nuget) on your and your co-workers environments. And then you push to the build-QA-server and it breaks...4

Part of my job requires me to use SQL in SQL Server and databases and Python and utilising Javascript APIs - so I was thrown in at the deep end. But my fiancé is also an amazing help as a software engineer he helps to spot my errors and encourages me to take on new challenges.

Meeting about brand new web app system to replace an ancient MFC app.
director: can we just use the old subsystem manager? (horrible mix of management ui and SOAP listeners in the same app...)
developers: No, that's an MFC app... not even just a server.
director: but... can't you just plug it in? you're using web components right?
developers: *weary sigh* -
You know when you are suddenly push to a new position that you are not familiar with?
Well I just became a server database/cloud expert. Fuck me.
Been Googling for a while now. If anyone has any advice, I'll appreciate it.
Anything free and open source, even better.6 -
Company's main server got an upgrade and I am installing the new one from scratch now.
The new server hoster has custom images and CDRoms. One of them is called "Arch Linux"...
I... I am very attempted! -
People keep asking me the reason why I am still using my 9 years old laptop which has Pentium b940 and 4 GB of ram. I should say Its enough for me!
All hard work is on the server side. I just need an SSH client, VS Code, Chromium, and Spotify, all running on a light weight Ubuntu. why should I buy one of those brand new laptops which has lights more than a UFO.6 -
So I got access to a new Centos server. I had to install applications like Mysql, tomcat etc. The install was easy but configuration to be done were fucking headache. Admin guys were such Assholes that they dint care much to help. It took me 3 days to finally sort out and got things running. Yay! I believe I learnt a lot about Linux. Thank you Admin for being such an asshole✌️1

At the beginning of the evening I started creating a snapshot of my webserver Ubuntu 16.04 installation, running 5 websites.
When the snapshot was created I started a release upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04.
Finally after upgrade and reboot... Nothing worked anymore. Nginx was running but none of the websites was working.
I started checking logs & searching for a solution, with no luck.
Wanted to restore my snapshot. Reading the docs of Scaleway: only a manual on how to restore to a *new* server...
Dumb me removing my current server and wanting to create a new server: "All servers tempotary out of stock"
Me: *panicing and clicking the resfresh button every second*
"Low stock"
*HITTING the create server button*
Added my snapshot
*Booting up*
Ssh'ing into server
Server: "nope"
#+#£_&-+{$}¥}•+';!
*Sees 'add snapshot to volume'*
*Sees 'add volume to server'*
*All websites running again after nginx restart*
What the fuck.
*End of evening* -
I just setup a new VPS
I made all configuration required
I reboot the server

Converting server time to any given local timezone is a pain in the ass.. at least in JS.
Here's what I've got:
convertNowToTimezone = (localOffset) => {
let d = new Date();
let millis = d.getTime() + (d.getTimezoneOffset() * 60000); //convert server local time to UTC millisec
d.setTime(millis - (localOffset * 60000)); //convert UTC millisec to required local time
return d;
}

Switching to a new server provider the day before a sprint and thinking that turning it on qualifies as the server being "set up".
-
A few weeks ago I ordered 2 8TB HDDs so they can run in RAID 1 on my server. Then I discovered that one of them isn't working.
So I sent it back to seagate and got a new fresh one today. I thought I would install it in my server and everything will be fine ...
First thing was to backup all files on the already working HDD and delete the volume, but windows already put a pagefile on it so I needed to deactivate it.
Restarted and notice that windows wasn't doing anything so I deactivated it again and now the wonderful text "Getting Windows ready screen" appeared and after minutes of starring at a non moving image I force-restarted the server and eventually I could delete the volume.
I activated mirroring and thought "I'm ready to go". After 15 Minutes of waiting, the text changed from "Formatting" to "Formatting (1%)". The only thing I wanted to do was yelling ... Thanks Windows .... thanks4 -
New customer calling me to change all admin password on all server and Nas and some router/wifi ap for an unknown reason.
Customer: I have so many windows servers and nas'es...
Me arriving on site: just one qnap Nas... no windows server. 👍🏻🦄 -
Ffs, I just spent the whole weekend setting up our new storage server. Moved it into the rack. Entered the UEFI to enable idrac. And BAM! The uefi decided to load it’s own raid config over the raid controller.
Raid controller bios doesn’t let me load it’s own config after that. So I have to reset the controller and setup raid, os and the whole shot again.
To make it even better. Debian doesn’t load the firmware for the broadcom chip, since it’s a non-free driver. Making me have to do lots of manual config after the install just to get it on the internet.
I wish I could’ve just bought a new server instead of working with this shit.
I would’ve used FreeBSD with ZFS, but our server only has 8GB ram, and I need about 120GB extra to work smoothly with all the storage.
It’s just a pita working with this. One step forward, ten steps back. -
I hate ot when your client has access to new relic and they panic and start creating critical issues when the linux db server is is 80% memory..
After a 2h conference call the client said he was going to contact a 3rd party dba because he didn't believe it was normal. -
Client has decided to buy another server because the old one is too slow
Manager: how long will it take to move our apps to the new server
Me: maybe 3-4 hours
15 hours later
Manager: why isn't it finished yet?
Me: because I have to install a lot of missing things on the new server, and I have to google a lot to find them
Me (thinking): because your 15-years old apps suck big time4 -
My company is getting a new website. This involves getting new hosting.
I made the old one, and it's all just static html. I'm not that attached to it but it's an important detail.
The bosses want the switch to the new site to happen instantly, but I pointed out that with DNS propagation times etc it can't really happen that way.
So I suggested the new web guys host our old site for a few days and we change the DNS now. Then when they want to launch we don't have to wait for the DNS and they can just swap it out.
This involves dropping 10MB of html files into the web directory on the new server.
For this service they are charging us for 2 hours of their time!
I guess I'm in the wrong business... -
let's try something new
(virtualbox only right now - i kinda sorta lost all my isos due to not paying attention to which drive i was writing one to, and accidentally wrote over the drive with the isos 😥 { as well as all of my school material, and game projects. }... i really need a server to back things up to, y'know?4 -
Changed the .bashrc of my headless server incorrectly, causing me to get kicked out of my ssh session as soon as I connected… Thank God for scp (learned something new today as well 😂)

Trying to setup a ltsp server for fun. Neve done server things before.
The server and the thin client are in VMs. So I start, install openssh, and them when I try to ssh... WHY CAN’T I FUCKING CONNECT, I CHECKED THE IP WITH IFCONFIG, oh shit, forgot to configure the vm network... so ssh works! Then I setup dhcp (I really don’t know what I’m doing, just following the tutorial), the ltsp configs thing, build the client image and then, I HAVE NO FUCKING INTERNET CONNECTION. Continues, boot up the thin client... WHY CAN’T YPU FUCKING FIND THE SERVER!! Then I realise the vm is not an ubuntu one, so delete it and make a new one... WHY DOES IT STILL DOESN’T WORK!!!!!! Oh wait forgot to connect to the network! Goes to put the network adaptor, and: wait! I don’t need NAT! So I replace the NAT by the correct network, and: Wait it lets me choose the weird thingy intel/pce thingy, oh I remember now! It said we needed the “...III FAST...”! Activate it and... IT WORKS ! !!!! CONNECTS TO THE SERVER!!! GOT THE DHCP!!! WAIT!!!!! What is THAT 🤬 TFTP LOADING THING!!!:
TFTP open timeout

A new subsea internet cable between the country I'm in and where my server is, went live a few weeks ago
The rsync from local PC -> remote server went up from avg 500kb/s to 4mb/s
the subsea cable website says they're aiming Nov/Dec launch so it's probably in semi-live stage rn but still cool 🫡2 -

Freaking github markdown! I just want this directly under each other like i fucking wrote it:

[Server implementation](implementation_server.md)
But it's places it together on one line. Fine, i put a new line between it.

It fucking shows a blank line in between!

So I'm soley a Java developer, and I got the task of making a server so I was like what a great time to learn C++ or something. With no prior knowledge of what c++ looks like I make a new project and open the damn template to be confused asf on where to start. I lookup some hello world tutorials and now I'm even more confused. Thanks C++13

I just spent an hour and a half installing a cpu cooler for my new server. I got so pissed my brain just switched to happy mode and I genuinely felt good and started laughing like a psychopath for no reason.
All in all, terrible experience, fuck cpu coolers. I've had terrible experience with them throughout the years.5 -
At my workplace a while back we got some new interns.
I had been explaining how to use the commands on our Linux server. While I was in mid-sentence talking about what shutdown does, the intern inputs the shutdown command; shutting down everything... not shortly after, I start getting bombarded with emails and calls...4 -
Okay so one of my friends got an offer for a more powerful server with 128GB RAM, ok processor because the current server load is high. When they got the offer of the new one I saw there was in the licenses part, Windows Server 2016. Which to me seems worst thing you can do for just using PHP, MySQL and nothing active directory or really windows specific. Can some of u please write in short why use linux for servers instead of shitdows. And it would clearly cost much less. Because I guess if other tell it they, the client, will agree...16

>>Server sind für mich "Neuland".<<
I want to switch to a new server with my website. I have a bunch of questions and hope you beautiful people will help me out.
1. I've decided to switch from shared hosting to an virtual server. Therefore I am going to rent the cheapest VS from hetzner.de. is this a good choice?
2. What do I have to care about and what stuff there is to be done in the beginning?
3. The reasons I want to switch are more root accessibility and I want to switch to https. What about that? Is let's encrypt enough?
4. How do I move the server from a to b?
5. What OS should I choose?
6. What about security?
7. Any further advice from experienced people is welcome!
Sry for those noob questions, but I've never been in touch with server work...23 -
Well finished work yesterday at the company where I would be grilled over whether it was safe to run an SQL script on the server using the command line but they thought nothing of everyone having to log in to the server as root!7

I updated my hosting packages, purchasing a new VPS. Half way through my download of all the hosted sites, I wondered why it had stopped. Yeaaaaah... I'd updated the DNS to point to the new server mid transaction. Hodor.2

1. Universal switch to IPv6 with back compatibility to IPv4.
2. A new universe of easy and convenient personal softwares that are served from your own home (aka, every client is a server).

Today was the best day of my life. Being a jack of all trades, that I am, I decided to migrate a client's website to an new shiny self-managed server from a shared host. So I started by setting up a web server and deployment being run from a group bash scripts. This morning everything was ready to go after some testing, all that was left to do, was to update my DNS to point to the new server. I got that sorted, the DNS update took about 1 hour to propagate. So the homepage was loading just like before, it felt like I had just achieved something worthy of a mention on the interwebs — at least. Then I tried to navigate to another page other than the homepage and none of those were working as expected, at this point I was only getting 404s. Tweaked to settings and then all I could get were 502s. I spend about 8 hours dreading that uncomfortable call from the client, luckily that call never came through and all is well again. All this drama was caused by a bad .htaccess.

fucking VS2017,
It takes like 1 minute to refresh stored procedures in the server explorer, It is so annoying especially if you need to constantly add new stored procedures.
and dont get me start on DBML at least once a week that shit fucking decided to crash VS2017.
Maybe I need to download more ram 🤔🤔🤔5 -
Since I’ve started this new job (Restaurant Server) I haven’t had much time to code and it’s annoying.3

my old game had this flow every time a client places an object:
Client A creates a new generic object, and attaches texture paths (yep, global paths are allowed), and... lua code as strings to it.
Client A sends the entire object list to the server
Server receives it, replaces it's own object list
Server copies the entire object list and sends it to all clients
Client A and Client B both receive the object list and replace their versions.
All clients see that the object contains some code as strings
They compile and store it, and then run every frame. UNSANDBOXED.
any client could make all other ones execute any code and i was proud of my idea! -
Our production server has huge memory shortage so I have to jump trough a lot of mod_rewrite optimising hoops to keep it running because no time to configure a new server...

!Rant
Just for blatant curiosity; how many people would ++ this just to help me get a stressball to get through this day.
Rant
So today I woke up to a message that my jobs webserver was down; and that all personal webpages for the Uni went down with it. We had no idea why or how it went down but eventually someone got it up- just in time for our Proxmox server to go down; which runs our new web server (thankfully it's not live yet), our print server, our PXE server, and more... Loving today. Such stress. Very shit.

The test server at work was going up and down all day. Not great when I was trying to use my new dashboard.

With my new server equipment, I'm almost ready to boot her up, but one issue:
I don't have all of it. I need PSUs, Heatsinks, and a chassis. Found a local seller on eBay, but they don't do shit on weekends 😐 COME ON I HAVE FUCKING WORK LIKE AN HOUR AWAY DURING THE WEEK -
Recently we started to encrypt all our PHP code.
To hide the code that we use to unauthorized people.
A new intern deleted ALL the encrypted and uncrypted files from all the servers (Also our backup server) saying
"I thought it was a Cryptolocker".
Now I can fucking start to find it all back and maybe even recreate our system and fucking crypt everything again.6 -

Worst advice I guess.1 -
After a couple of days reading bout CI/CD i find it really compilated for my usecase. Server for jankins server for rancher server for anything and a lot of configurations to make it work. So i gave up and decided to build my own CI tool which turned out to be easiear than all of this. So i wrote a simple cli tool in go which listens on master branch of every directory specified in a .yml file and everytime a new commit is done it pulls the repo and rebuilds the container. Pretty easy without having to deal with all the bullshit15

So yesterday at a client location, our support guy called me and said this thing is trimming the characters whenever I save it. It was a ckeditor in our application, so basic troubleshooting was to check the system configuration for that page and the ckeditor configuration.
Checked the system configuration, ckeditor configuration, found nothing.
Out of curiosity, checked the schema for the table in which the data is stored, so one of the idiots took the backup of original table and appended it with the date time on which it was backed up. And created a new table with field data type of varchar with a 255 limit.
This was in UAT server as well as Production server. Changed the field type to text again in UAT. Asked to team to get the same thing done on Production server as well. -
I was about a year into working for this small marketing company as the only developer. I was still pretty new to development, my first real gig, 2006'ish.
Form processing was still a struggle for me, so my really cool idea was to use an open sourced tool that would create and process any type of contact form, (think wufoo, but on your own server)
Anyway it was working great, then a few months later we decided to move all 30 of or our small clients to a new server, I moved everything over and deleted the old site (didn't make a backup of any DB (who does that?) got a call the next morning that none of our contact forms were working and nobody had any info stored from previous contacts.
Spent the next 2 weeks getting really good at php. We never did that again. -
WEP security on a brand new wifi rollout. Do it for the legacy because no one knew the scanner gun (like target or walmart has) could operate on WPA Personal or even....802.1x Kerberos Security login. At least it was *something* but the whole place was on windows xp and server 2003.
It is 2016. Lets learn our technologies and read the manuals. -
!rant got to give an end of sprint demo for the ui my team had been working on for three weeks today, bosses said they were impressed with how much we got accomplished (we're all new college hires and this is only out second sprint) and didn't care that out demo was ran from a local machine rather than a proper web server

Hey ya'll back with another college boi question.
I want to develop a web server akin to that of jackbox/among us. Where each session has like an 'ABCXYZ' style code, and i assume are using TCP sockets on the back end.
I'll be writing in Go cause I <3 Go and its a chad language. Anywho, am i supposed to spin up a new websocket server each time someone wants to make a room? Or do i have one websocket server and some sort of map of rooms.
gameRooms := map['id_string']clients
Anyone have any suggestions for this?7 -
Being told to continuously restart a server over the weekend while someone's API script kept crashing the server. Yes, they knew it was doing it. No, they "claimed" they didn't know how to slow down the amount of new API sessions. I avoided all their requests after that.1

So I discovered WAMP this weekend, it's so nice to not have to work on my prod server when making changes and testing out new projects :)

New LTS version? Why not upgrading? For sure you'll update your server in an hour, what could happen?1

Current deploy process on the legacy project I'm on right now: ssh to server, check out branch with new feature, test on live, if it works then merge to master and check out master.

I JUST REALISED HOW POWERFUL ARE COMMANDLINE ARGUMENTS !!
F*** you college u didn't teach me shit, they just taught us how to pass cmd arguments.
I just tried on my own to pass a command using PHP to run a simpe python script on the server! But its so fun!
Damn, now I see a sea of possibilities of what I can do with this new Power I discovered !!1 -
You make edits to your code, then you deploy.
But the behavior remains the same.
You try to figure out why your new code doesn't get executed.
Try other cases.
Try changing this.
Try changing that.
Still no changes.
Then you realize you deployed to a minimized emulator* the whole time.
* replace emulator with device/server/whatevs -
I needed a tool that was super simple to transfer email from a non-cpanel server to a new WHM-based VPS. Ended up coding one and launched http://transfermyemail.ca - have had a few server companies jump on board because they needed migration tools too! Was it worth it from a development time point of view? Not yet...maybe next year :)

Hey guys
spent all day with a new project, maybe you guys can help.
I have two p2p cameras that I want to setup and access when my family goes on vacation.
Cameras are working (with mildly success) , now, what Is the best option to access them from the Internet?
I can send e-mails, but can't config the SMTP server (don't know why always gives connection error, but guessing that maby this kind of products are blocked from sending e-mails), tried Gmail, mail, and Hotmail.
ftp-server.. don't have any online (have a VPS with 200 mb free ram...)
Tips? ideas?
Thanks, guys12 -
Today i chartered new realms for me.
I created a new hyper-v vm on the company windows servers and added a 5th instance to it, but instead of running another windows server i installed an ubuntu 18.04 (cause i am a bit familiar with debian from my raspberry pi)
we have two servers, one which runs the 4 vms and a replica. I first had the new vm on the main server but it occured me to move it instead to the unusued replica machine. That kinda worked..i did a planned failover but the main server isnt configured to be the replica..and even when activating that it didnt work. This is weird.
For the moment i ignored that and proceeded to install nginx, mariadb and php 7.2..basically the lemp stack. I managed to setup nginx and a static ip adress for the machine (which was different from how i remembered it to do (in 18.04 its not done with the network conf but a yaml file).
in the end i added two different virtual servers, one for actual use and one for dev stuff (with phpmyadmin running for instance), listening on port 80 and some random other port.
as a test i brought a mediawiki onto the Port 80 server and it worked.
on monday i have to figure out how to implement the wildcard certificate i have for our company domain (internal dns simply routes intranet.company.com to the local server vm)
i am mighty proud cause all my experience with linux was with a raspberry pi so far and i am fairly certain i did it right and without shortcuts this time. (unlike my raspberry experience)
just wanted to share
(i also sweated a lot of blood when editing the hyper v settings as i did not set up the server in the first place)
((i also installed xrdp and a mate desktop, but i am less proud of that, but sometimes seeing folders graphically helps me)) -
testing feature: that is not what the specs say this how this is suppose to work. so, I write a bug report.
conversation with developer goes as follows
developer: this is not a bug. sends the bug report back.
me: the specs say it is a bug. I resubmit the bug.
developer: sends it back saying that it has been changed in the new specs.
me: how do I get the new specs?
developer: it is on the server, go ask your boss on where ecaxtally on the server they are. then, he closes the bug report.1 -

God, these people...
Little backstory. I'm making an training application and we have a MySQL database set up where some elements of the training are configured. This is so learning experts can easily change some aspects of the training without programmer's help.
Meanwhile, I'm also in the middle of a server migration, because our current server is running a lot of deprecated software and is in dire need of replacement.
This is going pretty slowly, though, because of other, high-priority, work that keeps being shoved my way.
Now, someone accidentally deletes a bunch of data from one of the schemas. No big deal in my book, the training is still in development and we have nightly backups of the database.
So I shoot a support ticket to the hosting provider and ask them to restore a specific schema, telling them to restore the image to some other machine and dump the tables in an MySQL file so I can restore it that way.
I also told them to get the backup of the OLD server, not the NEW one we're still migrating to.
About an hour later, I get a message that they dumped the schema's files in a Temp folder on the D drive. So I RDP to the server to check and... The files aren't there. Just before writing a response asking where the file is, I remembered the server I was migrating to and checked that server, and there were the files.
I had already migrated part of our databases and was testing compatibility before I moved to something else.
The hosting provider just dumped the files of the wrong server, despite me telling them exactly which server to use.
This is not the first time this hosting provider has let me down...
I'm really considering jumping to another if they keep doing this... -

Question: which is better approach?
1. Use push notifications to tell react website that new data is available
OR
2. Use SignalR (similar to socket.io) and push data in real time?
The down side of SignalR is server needs to map connections --> use more memory while push notifications doesn't require that12 -
I finally got my new home server.
A Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q in one of the higher configurations.
Any ideas what top level OS I should put on it?
ATM, I'm thinking Proxmox, ESX or Alpine.
I like proxmox because of the neat UI for everything but I'm kinda worried about how it basically takes the most important parts of the system over.
I like Alpine since I already use it for quite a while as my goto server OS and because of AWALL, which IMHO is the best linux server firewall.
I didn't get to evaluate ESX yet.6 -
short: The admin with enough xp is ill, there is no one with xp with varnish is and after 1 restart varnish outputs only 503.
long: there original admin is ill but he gave me an project to migrate an typo3 installation to a new server. Thats ok.
Plan: I move 150 GB of data with rsync to the new server, let specialists do something and switch ips between the new and old and clear varnish with a restart.
Reality: +2 hours to migrate the data, because of false infos from the admin, 7 hours preparing the switch, 5 minutes switch, 3 hours to find out the F*****G varnish is the single point of failure. I and the t3 guys agree to see the next day what went wrong.
ALL HAPPENED TODAY!
Plan for tomorrow: speak with the boss to account the extra hours to that day so i dont get over 10 hours and debug that fucking varnish and delete some servers from another project from the backupsystem and monitoring.3 -

Azure, great development slots! Must have, now I can have developer, staging and production. The greatest no downtime when swapping a new server in....
Everything crashes? WTF?
OKAY, so swapping to a service that authenticates users makes the authentication part crash :/
Phew development slots ROLL BACK...
No the entire service was broken. Rolling back, all non authenticating controllers work, but the authentication never happens, so server is working, but the users cant use it. Fuck!
Delete everything. Recreate. The setting persists. WTF. Delete again, recreate, reinitialize, republish, it works as it should when tested phew.
Creating new service experiencing cant replicate. Hmm, okay must have been a glitch. Next, update, YEAH swap, no downtime!!!

When I found out that the server I use weirdly implements SSH login.
For some very odd reason (probably a historical one,) you have to access the web-app console and press a button TO GRANT SSH ACCESS TO THE F*<KING IP ADDRESS FROM WHICH I PRESSED THE BUTTON. The server blocks the wrong IP addresses outright. And only one active allowed IP at a time. This totally obliterates my plan to perform CD on this server. Why can't I just register public keys?
Then I learned several months later that they introduced a new server plan that *does* support the public-key registration.
I'm divided on whether to change my plan in exchange for a rather significant increase in the monthly cost.3 -

Change of technology. There's one time that the team can't decide what tech to use. So after 2 years of production suddenly we moved from Nodejs to Elixir for server side and MySql to Cassandra for database ... It is crazy that time...
So learning a new language it was so difficult as elixir is functional ... (And I was sucks back then) , and Cassandra is something new to me , which is difficult.
(Hey bit now it is ok ) -
That moment when you deploy latest version at end of day and the server finds new bugs for you.
Python on our server is so whiney it's not even funny. Code runs perfectly on our Windows machines, dies as soon as it touches its own environment.
Time to start deploying to a VM first instead. -
I've been writing on this TCP server the last few days to integrate our software with some services used by the rest of the company.
Noticed the company service keeps making a new connection for every single message, and closes this at client side (without signifying the server).
So I contact the team who wrote these services and ask them what's happening. Team lead of that team doubts that I know what I'm talking about and tells me TCP automagically signals the server on disconnect, and this probably is a .Net only problem.
5 seconds of googlefu: half open tcp connection.
Apparently, the application doesn't care about dropped connections and losing connection states even though every service should be checked for licensing when connecting to the server. With this set-up everyone can just send a message other than the registration and pass through any 'validation' due to the fact there can be no connection state.

Hi there, i'm new to AWS. i've running my python code in Lambda. Basically it's calling an http-request and processing the responding JSON to a CSV file. Now, what is the easiest way to transfer that CSV file to a 3rd party FTP Server?7

PM: Can we setup this new server today ?
Me: Sure, where is the ESXi setup CD ?
PM: ehh, wasn't in the box ?
Me: nah
So Finance team can't ctrl+c, ctrl+v from what we send them and actually buy stuff we need :D1 -
Discord server under development for software engineering, cyber security, networking, and IT talk in general. Looking to meet new people and talk :). @ me if you're interested in testing it.4
-
someone gets in my Discord server, asks "can anyone download a file for me? DM me" in the bot trap, and leaves.
Is it worth the effort of trying to track this guy down so I can get new malware or is it not worth the risk of CP?4 -
-Recently started a new job so I’m new to the infrastructure-
Spent the vast majority of the day trying to SSH into one of my company servers to sort some random bug out on the website & the connection kept being rejected despite the day before it working when passing the .pem key into the SSH along with the ip & my username, nothing new there.
Anyway, everyone’s mad busy so I don’t wanna bother anyone to ask why, so I check confluence, no documentation for SSHING into our scheduler or the code the server I need to access. Never-mind.
Spend another couple hours trying debug it on my own, no luck. Never-mind.
Finally seize my opportunity and ask for help; ‘Oh the server IP changes daily so you need to run a task through our scheduler that you need to SSH into to return the list of IPS and that dynamically changes so that’s how you get the IP’
Oh ok. Why is there no documentation for that again? I mean. Thats generally some pretty important information you’d pass onto your starters.
At least I can say I won’t be making that same mistake again.5 -
so I'm the new guy now, my new team write complicated, deep-for-no-reason IFs instead of a switch, gave me a shitload of resources to get up to date with their standards, insisted to every time make sure my code has been tested, then the first deployment I see THEM do breaks production, because a major fucking app had no tests whatsoever, also half of the team has 30+ years of experience in backend, laughs about TS on the server (which is actually fair) and I'm the frontend guy

Wasted two hours configuring a new application server, because there are over 9000! places where properties must be set...4

IPython is the epitome of the new and shiny. IPython, jupyter, lab, hub, server, galaxy. I think they're all different iterations of "UI around python repl".
And I love new and shiny.3 -
2nd day of deployment!
Till now its going smooth; server configured + tables migration is ON!
PS: Migrating old site to new ;)1 -
That feeling when a new feature works on a local build, works on the development server, and works on the QA/UAT server, and then still breaks production when deployed.2

does anyone have a vps server? i just need to borrow it for a minute to see if i can create a new spotify account10

Sprinting all week long against time. friday afternoon, committing time. connect to Git to check latest changes. Server down.
New IT Guy pushed an update @4PM.
He's been missing for a week. -
Look at job ad. Server less, micro services, nodejs, react, vue, docker. While I still stuck in lamp stack. How do I ever find a new job? Learning those shit at spare Time. Employer said need at least 1 year commercial experience at those shit1

Developing a News app in android and kinda struck at the point where a new news is added to the server and then to be notified to all users.. I mean I want to know how to correctly implement push notifications and will I need an XMPP server for that ? If so ,then which one do all you experienced devs suggest..?
Thanks.. #awesomeCommunity5 -
When your development team gets called out to a testing site to fix the problem with the software not login in... and you emailed all the user's and the it admin to install the new software update due to security update and a server changeover... only to realise that all of them have the old version installed. I expected the user's not to follow instruction, but the IT admin... really?

Since Electron is getting some well deserved flak, I think I'll add my two cents.
Why in the actual fuck can it not proceed any way to allow us to USE OUR SELF FUCKING SIGNED CERTIFICATES.
Yes, security hole, but for messing about with new software, I'm not going to pay a CA for a certificate so I can put it on a server that only I and a few select individuals use!
At least give us a usable frontend for allowing our self-signed certificates so I can use my fucking server!1 -
There's a right way, and a wrong way...
Correct:
if (version <= OLD_VERSION) {
... do_something_old ...
}
else { ... something new ... }
The wrong way:
if (version = NEW_VERSION) {
... do something new ...
} else { ... do something old ... }
What my standup report is today:
I'm modifying thousands of lines of SQL code because the script was hard-coded to only work on SQL Server 2008 R2, and we're using SQL 2017 in our test environment. All of those lines now fail because we don't match your "new version" number.4 -
Well ... If the server response does not give me the new form data, how am I supposed to display that form without any data???

Runs automated deploy script on new laptop.
Forgot to install latest .NET.
And SQL Server.
And Node.

I had to work on a new apache server, after 3 hours of trying to figure out why this price of cap doesn't obey my will, I found out the SElinux in on(fuck you mode)

What wrong with the MNC's. I am trying to create a new folder for email templates in DEV server. I have been busy for two days to take the approval from Manager, Infra team and architect. Are you serious two productive days to give approval to create a folder???
Fuck the system. Fuck you MNC. -
That lovely moment your development server manages to find a new error every day and you have to spend the new day fixing the error. This just a week from releasing the work of months running smoothly.

Option #1 when installing new software: "Install database and web server on same server (typical)" ... Typical!? What kind of world are we living in here?

Discover 2 days before go for a vacation week end that one of the customer servers will shutdown at midnight (the customer discuss and finally got other 2 days).
And that you to do a backup of 30gb of data before you leave and upload on the new server.
And in conclusion, as all the love stories, leave 2 day later that you didn't make in time because the original server is veeeeery slooooow. -

Discontinuing my raspberry pi as a gitlab server (I have sorted a new one for myself) and I'm trying to figure out what to do next with it.
I've been toying with the idea of making a smart mirror since my room doesn't have a mirror anyway, does anyone have any other ideas? :)3 -
I am facing some problem on my new project. This is how I expect my project to work.
1. I am working on an Android application that uses Twitter sentiment analysis and gives out predictive result.
2. I want to keep the backend that is the python file/NLTK script on server/cloud/anywhere.
3. The Android App take the input and pass it to server.
4. In backend the tweets regarding the input are processed and after that a result is generated. The result is passed to Android App(client).
5. The app displays the result.
The problem is I don't know how to create the server(All I have is .py file). Secondly I don't know how to create request/response between the app and the server( client with .py) like how to create communication between them.
I have googled the query but am unable to come up with any reasonable solution. Any suggestions are welcome.1 -
Why does Chromes sometimes suck balls when it comes to caching and reloading updated files on the backend web server?
Sometimes I get stuck in a state where I don't get the whole F-ing site refreshed... until I open a new virgin browser who's never been touched by the web code.
Why can't refresh .. .just REFRESH?

Deploy new script on production and then server time are outdated suddenly, plus old timestamp data inside db changed to outdated time. Who update the data inside db? Mindblow~2

Thank god it's Christmas holidays so i can setup my amazon server for a new site. Normally a admin does it but it's a side project.

Testing new server deployment in test env all works, then production it all breaks down. Network didn't allowed the right traffic. Took me whole week to find that out. Until some networking engineer said, you know there is a firewall between those networks?

Would it be possible to use (S)FTP protocol in conjunction with push technology rather than pull? Perhaps websockets since both use TCP?
Say, something like an external server periodically sending my server files and when a new file arrives, I will get a notification. This instead of constantly polling my directory to check if there are files in it.
I think I can see this done with an Angular page that gives me a notification when a new file arrives on my FTP.
I think it might turn into an interesting little hobby project..4 -
Need recommendation on which server side language/framework to use along with my new react native app.
Thanks3 -
Not quite dev-related, but I once had to migrate and replace a Windows Server 2003 Domain (1 DC) to a new Windows Server 2016 Domain Controller. The network consisted of about 30 PCs, 1 DC and 1 DB Server.
Eventhough it worked, I wouldn't do it again... 😰
At the beginning I almost deleted the old Domain Controller VM from the old ESXi host server, before any VM backup existed. Close one... -
To the Backend Ninjas out here.
Ive written rest APIs before but know I'm asking myself how I would implement user messaging for my app.?
Use Rest and poll the server?
Use websockets and keep the connection to the server?
Or is there something that I don't know?
Man I'm getting old Everyday there are thousands of new things....6 -
BACKSTORY:
I was considering creation of client-server app to learn some new language and wanted it to have the best possible performance.
The client part is not an issue, it can be whatever, really... the server choice is pain in the ass...
I have looked up web server framework benchmark here: https://techempower.com/benchmarks/
So comparing those I have 2 options:
- Actix (Rust)
- Vert.x (Java)
I was about to use Vert.x, it handles requests asynchronously which seems nice.
However I thought, what if I wanted to sell this shit someday and Java requires licenses, while Rust don't.
I am terrible if it comes to licenses, so...
QUESTION:
How does Java licensing work?
It is on client to pay it cause he is using it or on me as a product owner?
Or should I switch to Rust already?5 -
Nextjs 14 just came out and they added a new server actions syntax which is the same bullshit syntax like php where you insert server side code in the middle of html div! And not only is that ridiculous enough but also vulnerable to sql injection 😂😂😂2

Quote from my new colleague: "I rather cut of <colleagues> fingers".
They both were troubleshooting a server problem. Both of them did not cause the server problem afaik.3 -
Grrrrrrr!!!!!!! How you frustrate me SQL SERVER REPORTING SERVICES! Designing a report changed query on dataset to include new field, fields started displaying all sorts of random stuff, booleans in text fields etc. Just spent 20 mins "checking" by rebuilding the first few bits of report and first dataset it's something weird with SSRS. Bye bye Sunday evening!!!

! Rant... Advice.
Looking for a new server to host my clients websites.
Worked with WHM and CPanel until now.
Think it's time for a Vps and looking at prices between managed and self managed and after some experienced advice.
Where do I start with learning about managing a server, what's best options (I'd like to stay with Apache and cpanel as I understand it).
Any recommendations for Aussie vps? -
Is JavaScript the Tower of Babel? What will be the long term effects of the explosion of new frameworks. I liked it when you could use a backend server side language and had JavaScript as the special sauce that could do what the backend could not do. I am sure I will be sent to hell for blaspheming the hot, new js frameworks. Oh well better to burn out than fade away.

You guys probably use slack at work. Or teams. But what about using discord? Would it be a good idea to use a discord server and create and manage clients' projects that way? Its free and simple to do. I have the most experience with discord even coding custom discord hooks.
For example I'd categorize each project by discord categories, and within each category I'd have channels such as general, ui, coding etc so engineers team project managers designers and clients can communicate in real time.
The biggest downside to this approach is... Discord allows maximum 50 categories per server. What if i have more than 50 projects to work on? I wouldn't be able to create a new category for that project. The growth and scalability of a company is limited thst way. That's what sucks. I'd have to create a brand new server and repeat this cycle again. And each server having max 50 projects. This doesnt sound very efficient right?
Is there a better way? Or do i have to use slack?24 -
Fuck you sophos. Fuck you hard. I moved a server to a new datacenter and it worked like a charm. Thank you windows and hyper-v. BUT! BUUUUUUT my fucking sophos worked like shit. Blocking everything by default? Yeah fuck you. Reconfigured everything. Still blocked and why? Forward “all“ doesnt mean forward all. Had to apply rules from port tcp 1 - 65335 and udp 1-65335. Nice you piece of fuck.2

Sorry, I just have a Question. Please is it possible to continue typing in the same local in Pycharm Terminal where the server was initiated while it is still running?, if yes, what should I do to continue typing on the on the same local.
I do not want to open another new local, and I don't know if if that's normal with the community.1 -
Transferred wordpress site to new server for a client and it introduces special characters into the text #fun1

Has anyone done client side validation of subscriptions in Android? Or atleast just figure if it's expired or not?
I've spent my whole day trying to do this without a server and no, Google only has API for servers.
SO working answers are like 3-5 years old after which the API were changed. New answers simply ignore the part 'client side'1 -
Me: I spent some time cleaning up code because our server was crashing every time I called this api I needed for the new feature we are building this sprint.
Scrum master: why are you working on things that were not planned in this sprint
Me: .... -
We uploaded a theme (The7) to a fresh new wordpress installation.
We imported a few pages and then BOOM! everything stopped working.
That fucking theme and its plugins just destroy the whole server...
