Me: Erm ye, okay...
Friend: I think, im gonna make a css program to save data to database. That would make it even cooler!
Me: ye, okay. Wait what?! Hahahahaha
Friend: ??? Why u laughing13 -
I’m kind of pissy, so let’s get into this.
My apologies though: it’s kind of scattered.
Family support?
For @Root? Fucking never.
Maybe if I wanted to be a business major my mother might have cared. Maybe the other one (whom I call Dick because fuck him, and because it’s accurate) would have cared if I suddenly wanted to become a mechanic. But in both cases, I really doubt it. I’d probably just have been berated for not being perfect, or better at their respective fields than they were at 3x my age.
Anyway.
Support being a dev?
Not even a little.
I had hand-me-down computers that were outmoded when they originally bought them: cutting-edge discount resale tech like Win95, 33/66mhz, 404mb hd. It wouldn’t even play an MP3 without stuttering.
(The only time I had a decent one is when I built one for myself while in high school. They couldn’t believe I spent so much money on what they saw as a silly toy.)
Using a computer for anything other than email or “real world” work was bad in their eyes. Whenever I was on the computer, they accused me of playing games, and constantly yelled at me for wasting my time, for rotting in my room, etc. We moved so often I never had any friends, and they were simply awful to be around, so what was my alternative? I also got into trouble for reading too much (seriously), and with computers I could at least make things.
If they got mad at me for any (real or imagined) reason (which happened almost every other day) they would steal my things, throw them out, or get mad and destroy them. Desk, books, decorations, posters, jewelry, perfume, containers, my chair, etc. Sometimes they would just steal my power cables or network cables. If they left the house, they would sometimes unplug the internet altogether, and claim they didn’t know why it was down. (Stealing/unplugging cables continued until I was 16.) If they found my game CDs, those would disappear, too. They would go through my room, my backpack and its notes/binders/folders/assignments, my closet, my drawers, my journals (of course my journals), and my computer, too. And if they found anything at all they didn’t like, they would confront me about it, and often would bring it up for months telling me how wrong/bad I was. Related: I got all A’s and a B one year in high school, and didn’t hear the end of it for the entire summer vacation.
It got to the point that I invented my own language with its own vocabulary, grammar, and alphabet just so I could have just a little bit of privacy. (I’m still fluent in it.) I would only store everything important from my computer on my only Zip disk so that I could take it to school with me every day and keep it out of their hands. I was terrified of losing all of my work, and carrying a Zip disk around in my backpack (with no backups) was safer than leaving it at home.
I continued to experiment and learn whatever I could about computers and programming, and also started taking CS classes when I reached high school. Amusingly, I didn’t even like computers despite all of this — they were simply an escape.
Around the same time (freshman in high school) I was a decent enough dev to actually write useful software, and made a little bit of money doing that. I also made some for my parents, both for personal use and for their businesses. They never trusted it, and continually trashtalked it. They would only begrudgingly use the business software because the alternatives were many thousands of dollars. And, despite never ever having a problem with any of it, they insisted I accompany them every time, and these were often at 3am. Instead of being thankful, they would be sarcastically amazed when nothing went wrong for the nth time. Two of the larger projects I made for them were: an inventory management system that interfaced with hand scanners (VB), and another inventory management system for government facility audits (Access). Several websites, too. I actually got paid for the Access application thanks to a contract!
To put this into perspective, I was selected to work on a government software project about a year later, while still in high school. That didn’t impress them, either.
They continued to see computers as a useless waste of time, and kept telling me that I would be unemployable, and end up alone.
When they learned I was dating someone long-distance, and that it was a she, they simply took my computer and didn’t let me use it again for six months. Really freaking hard to do senior projects without a computer. They begrudgingly allowed me to use theirs for schoolwork, but it had a fraction of the specs — and some projects required Flash, which the computer could barely run.
Between the constant insults, yelling, abuse (not mentioned here), total lack of privacy, and the theft, destruction, etc. I still managed to teach myself about computers and programming.
In short, I am a dev despite my parents’ best efforts to the contrary.30 -
"But I don't know where to start..."
"... just start typing, be willing to mess up, and if you get lost just start over with better understanding from messing up. Eventually it'll work."1 -
The website i made has been hacked today.
Stored in their server.
They didnt give me an access for it.
The user account in the cms i used for updating content while building the website was revoked when the website is completed.
Now they ask me for the latest backup.
I have no backup because how the hell i do a backup when i got no access to the cpanel.
The only backup is the zip file for initial uploading into their server and the contents were added after the website is on their server.
That goddamn IT guy who wont give me any access for “securty sake” is calling me furiously asking for the backup and how to set up the stuffs from the beginning.
I thought he was the one who know his shit but i was wrong.
Fuck me?
No.
Fuck you.
But i still responding to him telling him step by step how to do shit with some swearing and sarcasm.

Dear everyone,
I am never late to meetings you set up with me, so please stop being late to meetings I set up with you.5 -
So... I just remembered a story that's perfect for devrant.
My brother got into engineering in university, and during the second semester they had their introductory class to programming. They had weekly homeworks that the lecturer would check and give grades accordingly.
The factors that could influence the grading were: execution (meaning that the code would excecute as intended), efficiency and readabilty. The weeks passed and everyone was doing well, getting fairly good grades. Everyone was happy.
Until one day a random guy we'll call bob got the worst grade possible. Bob wasn't a bad student. He had over-the-average grades in all the weekly homeworks and even impressed the professor in some. Naturally, he was baffled when he saw his grade on the google spreadsheet. He was pretty sure his code ran well. He always tested it on different machines and OSs. So, at the end of the class, he went straight to the helper of the class, in a pretty imperative manner, to demand to know how the fuck he got that grade. It's impossible he got excecution, efficiency and readabilty, wrong. All three wrong? Impossible. Even the stupidiest kid in the class had some points on readabilty.
"Oh, so you are Bob. Huh?" said the helper in a laid-back attitude. "Come with me. Prof. X is waiting for you in his office."
This got Bob even more confused. As they approached the office, the courage he had in a first moment banished and gave way for nervousness and fear.
The helper nocks the door. "Prof., Bobs here"
As soon as Bob sits in the chair in front of Prof. X's, he knew something bad was coming.
"In all these years of teaching..." said Prof. X hesitantly. "In all these years of teaching I have not come even close to see something similar to what you've done. You should be ashamed of yourself." Needless to say, Bob was panicked.
"In all these years I have not seen such blatant mockery!" added the professor. "HOW THE FUCK DID YOU EVEN DARE TO SEND A HOMEWORK WITH SUCH VARIABLE NAMING" That's when Bob realised the huge mistake he made. "NEVER IN ALL THESE YEARS I HAVE SEEN SOMEONE NAME HIS VARIABLES *opens the file on his desktop *: PENIS, SHIT, FUCKSHIT, GAYFUCKING<insert Prof. X's name>MAN, GOATSE, VAGINAVAR, CUMFUNCTION, [...]" The list of obcenities went on and on. In each word, the professor hit the table harder than the last time.
Turns out Bob felt so in comfort with the ease of the course he decided to spice things up by using "funny naming conventions" while coding, and then tidying everything up before uploading the homework. This week he forgot, and fucked it big time.
So remember folks, always check your code before committing/giving it in/production. And always adhere to naming conventions.9 -

A supervisor in my first job , he also taught me to pick up girls in bars.
Hell he picked up a girl whilst I was throwing up on a train 😂, literally right next to me 😅 talented man
He made me want to be better then him at programming ... Not picking up girls. So now I am and got my own company doing it ... All due to a strange bromance15 -

I just got stood up by a hiring manager.
This person emailed me directly and said (paraphrased) "I found your resume on StackOverflow and you look perfect for a lead software engineer position at [semi-big-name company]. [...] If you're interested, book some time on my calendar for a call."
So I did, and got a confirmation back. Exciting!
I called into the hangout conference at the specified time, and... well, so far it's been twenty-three minutes of listening to some faux-melodic chimes and Google's faux-soothing voice saying "You have joined the call but you are the only one here!"
ugh.

I recently broke up with my boyfriend of more than two years (we have known each other for more than four). My code (and my work in general) seems to have gotten better. Maybe because he's not always at the back of my mind. No matter what anyone says, long distance WILL take a toll on you if you don't meet the other person for more than a year. Nope. Nope. Nope. I'm loving the single life now and feel so much more confident about myself!14

My ISP can suck the biggest, sweatiest pile of dicks.
First of all, our normal service is garbage (1mb down, 0.1 up).
On top of that, for some reason, the Internet access goes down for a few minutes every time the public IP changes (2-3 times a day) which is fucking annoying.
And THEY FUCKING BROUGHT FIBRE TO MY NEIGHBOUR (20 METRES DOWN THE STREET) WHO IS AN OLD COUPLE WHO HAVE 0 INTEREST IN THE INTERNET, BUT THEY REFUSE TO BRING IT TO ME.

My first interview ever for an internship. The interviewer asked me to rate myself in this language from 1 to 10 as if I'm applying for a lead engineer position at Google. I replied with a number that I thought was appropriate at the time (but now I know it wasn't accurate). The interviewer didn't say anything and moved to the next question. Later, I found out he ranted about my answer on his Twitter, again as if it's expected from an applicant intern at a low tier company to know. Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth 7 years later.8

I love it when rather than fix the bug that is causing the faulty data you write a bot on a schedule to clean up the faulty data. It's like a bot battle who can mess up / clean up the data the fastest. Unless your clean up bot has a bug then you are just F'ed.2

So I just found this in the source of a website...
There was a copyright note as well. The page was made in 2001...
It is the website of a German institute of education4 -
I thought any fledgling dev could become a good one with enough team guidance, frequent discussion on ideas and reasoning with seniors, experience, and work variety
But one I know is proving they don't have the knack.
I really wanted to believe anyone could be a good dev if they tried hard enough but this one is just...
They've dragging us down.
Not paid enough to make it my problem to raise it with management. I've tried to help them grow but I've never seen such slow growth despite the different learning/teaching styles *we've* done to improve their capabilities (the entire team)
I dread working with them and I'm not alone apparently6 -
Literally any of them. I've got several open projects.
My personal website- started it, got about half the front end done, no longer liked it, so I scrapped it. Take 2: got about half the front end done again, and again, didn't like it. So I just stopped working on it.
A website for a local business. I was just screwing around to test my skills, and got the entire front end almost exactly how I wanted it, and then just stopped. (I got busy and forgot about it, tbh.)
A fan page for a sports team. I was going to try and test my skills to make a blog-like website, got a large chunk of the front end down, and a bit of back end done. But it took a back seat to my personal site, and is just collecting dust.
I have procrastination issues. -
First it was the "set up WampServer so the client can use our database", to which I told her we should use an embedded database, to which she told me to do.
Then the "Just give the client a .jar file and install the JRE in his laptop" to wich I told her we can make a native installer, to which she fucking assigned to me.
Then the whole fucked up management thing with no design whatsoever and the "we don't need version control".
To just a few hours earlier, when she got mad because I set up a Slack for us to exchange information easily, she told me she was already mad because I shared the project by Google Drive and that she worked in security and knows the risk... AND AT THE SAME TIME, she uses Gmail to share the project.. BRILLIANT !7 -
We seem to have a problem, if I leave the 50k club, there'll be no one in the 50k club 😦

tl;dr - why you no read this?
Here I am pondering why I continue to return to my job everyday when we are currently at month 13 of a 4 month project... yea let that set in for a minute... which is still at least 3-4 months away from being deployed due to annual leave of key stake holders and the whole Christmas period creeping up and things just not going as planned every step of the way.
There's no greater demotivater - is that even how you spell it - then being stuck in a project for so long you really just don't give a shit if it works or not anymore.
This has gone from a simple - relatively speaking - project to some monolithic mayhem of requirement changes and process adjustments, that have not only delayed our team, but 3rd party vendors needing to change things as well, or the requirements being wrong early so when you get up to business testing it's like "nope, that's not what we wanted" .... despite all the sessions of you personally giving the PM all the damn requirements.
But in saying that, they (3rd party) aren't innocent either, we have found nothing but issue after issue with their product since we started this project that who ever signed off on going forward with the thing should have been shot from both sides - it's not designed for the scale we will be using it yet we didn't find that out till we got so far into the rabbit hole we had a chance to be able to do load testing.
Meh, guess I'll go to work Monday and spend another week in misery trying to deliver something that just doesn't want to know what the finish line is.4 -

I was cleaning up dangling images in docker, and I accidentally removed the production database container as well.
Its not a big issue, I can just up the container back and everything should be fine. But after I up the container and connected to the database, I found out there's no data inside. I thought I fucked up, and sent msg in slack channel that I nuked the db.
Later my friend asked me which compose file I am using and that's when I realized I used the wrong config to up the db. Used the correct config to up the database again and everything goes back to normal.
It's friday evening and if I really dropped the db it would be fucking bad weekend....3 -

One of the biggest challenges for me learning to program is my memory.
Some people can pick up concepts easily and have a field day. I have to keep practicing until I memorize it properly, and even then I have the tendency to struggle.
Does this mean I give up? Helllll no. I'm far from giving up with all the progress I've made.4 -

I was just begged to play 30 minutes of monopoly with my family
With all those versions of monopoly I'll have to be more precice, it's the worst of them all
It's monopoly fucking zapped, you need an ios device to play it, it's been developed for the iPhone 4 and maybe a tablet because they didn't even update it for current phones, not even iPhone 5
The credit cards are a fucking joke, they work by touching certain parts of the touchscreen and don't work 85% of the time you try to use them, 5% of the time just choosing the wrong person
At least your relieved when 10% chance kicks in where it works for once
Instead they could developed for Android and used nfc tags making it reliable and fun, no it has to be shitty, cheap and frustrating
Like seriously, they could've also used qr codes instead, or just have fucking buttons on the screen because you need the fucking ios app anyway
The minigames are at least a bit of thought, but don't really make sense either
Money doesn't seem to matter, sometimes paying another player when it shouldve been pay to the bank (yeah, not only the credit cards are fucked, the whole money system is shit)
It's a fucking abomination of a game
Halfway through I searched for the company name on the board...

The new spec ended up wanting exact replicas of our Winforms projects in wpf. -
Damn, summer is here, I go to bed at dawn and wake up in the afternoon... it's strange... I don't like it. I liked going to bed when it was still dark outside and waking up to a sunset :(2
-
Got to love when the on-call takes their sweet-fucking time with the back-up. All this because the lazy douche did not what to verify the back-up was complete.
-
They offered 50% off if I signed up for their "club" at the clothing store
Needless to say I used my spam account to sign up2 -
9 pm - let me just quickly setup up a media center/NAS in my RPI, then it's off to bed!
3 am - shit, i have to get up in 3 hours >< -
Tried to install Ubuntu on a Virtualbox. Wasted so much time and effort just to get it running.
Got so fed up, ended up getting a hosted one at Digital Ocean.8 -
- woke up at 2:00 AM to read,
- read how sleep makes you healthy, active, smart
- went back to sleep,
- wake up in the morning and felt freaking awesome,
~best decision of my life -
I work in tech support right now... 80% of my job is waiting around for presenters to show up to events and end up not wanting any tech.

Why apply to interviews if you don't wanna show up? I start feeling stupid because I showed up on time for your interview.
Please, please people; don't apply if you're not going to come; we have other things to do too...4 -
Why doesn't Google buy Bluestacks to help speed up the official emulators?
Why doesn't Google just speed up the official emulators?5 -
Stay up all night coding. Wake up hating myself. Repeat. I haven't been to sleep before midnight in at least a year.1

Here are some of the variable types in java if someone needs it :)
-String myString = "Hello";
//integeres
- Byte myByte = 127; [It can hold up to 128
-Short myShort = 530; [up to 32767] -> 2 bytes
-int myInt = 8021; [up to 2,147,483,647] -> 4 bytes]
-long myLong = 213134; [ up to 9,223,372,036,854,755,807] -> 8bytes
//Decimal Numbers
-float myFloat = 3.14f;
-double myDouble = 23.45;
P.S.
I hate double... idk why

porting a script that supports barewords to something that doesn't....
string up = "up", down = "down";
if(position === up)
its all well and good until you find someone copyies and pwastes that to have in every function
string up = "up", down = "down";
if(position === up)
string up = "up", down = "down";
if(position === up)
string up = "up", down = "down";
if(position === up)
then imagine a much larger dictionary. Also there was a spelling mistake, several in fact.
also who rewrote the parser to try to support keywords as variables? -
Finally started to learn Node.js and actually set up a small server with node and express and ejs, it honestly works nice but requires so many small things that take a bit to set up, while an apache server running PHP and Mysql would take me 5 minutes max to set up, but either way still trying to make that transition.5

Trying to install Fedora to use some Linux stuff

Yeah fuck this back to Windows it is.10 -
Got engaged to set up the CI for a project. Worked with the main developer to set up the dev environment only to find out that he deleted 80% of the migration files because he didn't know what they were

Those moments when you get up hoping that you don't screw up your day but then end up bugging your code rather than debugging it and then Git/other VCS comes to your help.2

Anaconda. Quite fitting a name to something that fucks up python environments so thoroughly. Ironic too, given that it was meant to simplify. Anaconda doesn't give a shit about the python that came with the distro. And all packages installed with pip are only visible to anacondas python. Not a single note of caution during installation. Or a best practices guide for the newbie. Just chaos. Utter chaos. The price of being a noob had been paid.8

I used to have time to read up on new web development tools and techniques and it helped me get a better job.
Now I have a better job I'm always busy, which I love, but it's harder to keep up to date.
I do some reading in my own time but it's more difficult to focus.
Thinking about it, I suppose I do keep learning just by being at work and solving new problems.1 -
Had my dev job described as a "computer, desk job" in a condescending tone yesterday by a guy trying to convince me to join his pyramid scheme....
// TODO: come up with awesome rant about this so I can look badassundefined todo come up with better tags todo documentation comments shit okay not sure how to tag this shit2 -

This became a tradition when waking up DevOps. When I wrote the escalation SOP, I felt it needed to be included. I don't think anybody's noticed it yet...1

Creating side projects for the side projects which are supposed to make the coding of side projects who are supposed to speed up coding on main project. Ends up in sideprojectception...3

Torn between buying a new pc now and waiting till a time when a new version doesn’t drop every fucking week 😡1

My best friends from university. Somehow I ended up with friends who are all better than me in computer science. Thus, I am basically forced to work hard to keep up.
-
fuck up some code and the mistake gets noticed later
add tests to cover up my fuck up
get asked to add tests for other existing presumably correct code i did not add or change in the nearby area
so be it4 -
I'm giving up on having side projects, most if the stuff I come up with is an unoriginal and uneeded waste of time. I'd rather run the extra mile to contribure to someone else's project.
-
being middleware... had to split up back end work in two parts which wasn't necessary but for 1 day it is split up and at the end 3 days delayed because of split up... controlling temper was the biggest challenge of that part.

I keep thinking that I need to set up my site for a portfolio or something, but then I remembered that I'm really bad at coming up with designs.
Have tried to look up some other sites for inspiration, but I always get these really impressive sites that me feel even more potato :c2 -
Machine learning. People started picking up ml and bragging about machine learning. Sure it’s an obvious industry that is going to pick up, but thousands of people picking up the same subject is going to make the industry stale and people are going to find better alternatives and won’t be as successful as some think imo (I could be wrong, don’t attack me).3

Windows after a fresh installation be like
Preparing, seting things up for you, do you want to use cortana, do you want to give us all your data, windows is all yours, configuring, Setting up, almost there

Should I be even be testing if no one cares.
I keep asking Devs regarding the functionalities of their system for testing and then, realize it's already on Prod even before I test in beta or enable to test in beta.
Do I exist!!!
Now, for the nth time, I have started to test when things are almost there or already there in Prod.
I should keep myself in adrenaline mode always on from now on.
Need to do something worthy.
The worst way to start a new job.2 -
Would some Android devs please step up? At the rate all the cool apps are popping up on iOS I'm gonna end up with an iPhone again and I don't wanna go back to the ecosystem :/4

Seeing the Apple event makes me feel bitter-sweet.
It's like seeing everything Microsoft did first, failed to polish, and gave up on; picked up by Apple, re-done wayyyy better 5y later and marketted to the general populace
I wish msft stopped giving up within 2-3y of failing. The gap will just widen5 -
Could someone explain to this old fart what the kiki and bouba thing I keep seeing around the place is all about? Is it something to do with Köhler's work, or just something the urban dictionary hasn't yet catalogued?5

Got a new work laptop yesterday. Set it up, updated it, and went to bed. I woke up this morning to it not accepting my password. I had to blow it away in recovery and delete my old keychain. Great start to the morning.

When you wake up late, then have an event you're going to this evening. Means I get less than 3 hrs to code.

While hand-testing comment-posting functionality messed up the migrations and damaged local db. Had to recreate the whole set up (users, posts, etc) in order to resume the testing by hand.
Should've written the tests ;( -
can’t someone just take jupyterhub and nbgrader, polish them the fuck up and host them somewhere and make it available for people to use without having to go through hell just to set it up somewhere! jeez.2

Everyone who runs tests on our platform complains about the speed and says that it needs to be optimised ASAP. Then assumes someone else will do it. Then a few weeks later they complain again!

So after requesting (more like begging) the guys higher up to give us proper heads up about a piece of work... They just threw the same 2 day worth of work to us saying we have 3 hours to do it... Sometimes I think they just do this kind of thing on purpose to wind us up...

Trying to upgrade to macOS High Sierra, guess what? After half a day of backing up and installation, I time traveled. My Mac is still running macOS Sierra. 🙄

Should I just give up? I keep trying to learn Android and can never seem to memorize anything. Like how to do a recyclerview. I know that it needs a adapter a view holder. Yet I always have to look up how's it's done. Either though docs or from other projects. Is that common? Or should I give up since I can't seem to remember how to do it.5

Gonna start up my own blog pretty soon. I've got XAMPP set up and a few pages ready to go. I just need to figure out what to actually write about to put in it. Any hints or tips from y'all?10

My credo in (a.o.) dev is to sit down, shut up, and get it over with. Works every time. Except that my colleagues 99 out of a 100 times fail to shut up :(

That smug moment when you've just come back off holiday and reel off all the awesome shit you got up to during the scrum stand up meeting 😏

I'm about to give up on chrome canary on my Mac. Opens up tonnes of empty tabs (sometimes over 30) when I put the OS to sleep and fire it up later. It's slow and sometimes I have to refresh pages for the page to display correctly. Gonna go with Firefox for now.1

Waking up with a Red wine hangover only to find out the banks changed its cc processing system. That easy to set up extension I'd planned on using today won't work... I've got to write one from scratch.
Can someone please magic me to tomorrow? -
Well, today my school introduced us to their essay writing usb sticks. Which are basicly custom Debian Live USB sticks, which you need to boot to from the bios. Wonder how long it takes for someone to mess up something up in the bios.1

Thanks to the simplicity of android command line tools I wasted 2 days trying to set it up and then ended up deleting every byte it created to install android studio which comes with its huge IDE which I'm never going to use.
