Me : Check out this game I'm building as a side project!
Wife : Wow that's really neat! I expect to be able to play it on my phone. 1 month?
Me: What? I haven't even learned how to port ...
Wife : (interrupts) ONE MONTH

➡ A Developer is the one who thinks it will take 18 months to deliver 1 baby.🙇
➡ A Marketing Manager is the one who thinks he can deliver a baby even if no man and women are available.👷

1. Move to new house
2. Setup electricity account to auto-pay every month
3. Wait
4. Receive "disconnect" notice from electric provder
5. WTF
6. Call. Oh, yeah, our website doesn't tell you that you have to pay your first month's bill before you can setup auto-pay. It's in the fine print.
Okay people, here's my rant - if you manage a website that supports auto-pay and you're not PREVENTING your customers from signing up for auto-pay until there is a $0 balance in the account, then you're doing something wrong. Don't let your customers think they're about to loose their electric service because of a frontend guardrails issue.7 -
Every second I’m spending on this iPhone is getting me more annoyed.
I’m about to fucking compromise and get a non-lineage phone but At least a rootable one because I want or throw this piece of shit away as soon as possible.
I wouldn’t even pay 1 euro for an iOS device.
I told myself I’d go for an iPhone for a month or so but I’ll be looking for an extremely cheap android phone because I can’t bare working with this thing for much longer.
No offense to anyone and this is a personal opinion.

Wrote 800-1200 LOC
It went through code review which was apparently my first code being reviewed
Took me 1 month and more to fix most changes (per day more than 10-12 hrs of effort)..
That 1 month was a nightmare. Every day I thought of giving up programming. I shouted to myself every night why did I never considered these myself. How can I be so dumb.
Half of the reviews I didn't even know how to implement. Didn't even know what to Google.
I consider it as one of my toughest phase as a developer till date.
I still get goosebumps remembering those days.9 -
Seriously amazing how some people just contribute that much to open source:

"I actively maintain 1100+ npm packages (1 billion downloads a month) and many popular projects. You're probably depending on some of my packages in your dependency tree. For example, Webpack relies on 77 of my packages."11 -
My first job was at a web agency. Non tech background, trying to transition into tech through frontend. Month 1: graphic designer, month 2: CSS guy, month 3: UI guy, month 4: in the frontend team doing react, month 7: leading the team, also doing some rails backend, month 9: full stack, month 11: leading web team.
How? Everyone else in the dev team left at month 7 lol. Literally thrown into the middle of the rainforest, fighting bugs by myself. But became so good at debugging and learning on the spot. Left at month 12 for a better job.1 -
God dammit, my ISP fucked up.
I have a 400 Mbit/s Internet connection, which I pay a lot for it. I live in the central of a average city and we got 18 Appartements here with a banque and a wellness shop underneath.
There is a new shop under our block and 1 month ago a tecnician was here and made some recabling, so the shop would get enough performace.
Now since 1 week ago I have a bad output, laggs in games and just get about 250 Mbit/s, when not on high traffic times.
That fucking multipler in our house is over 10 years old and around 18 households are connected to it.
WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU NOT CHANGING IT, WHEN YOU SEE IT'S NOT ENOUGH?
We all here in this building are paying a lot for it, and now that fucking thing is overused and broken and you're just grabbing our money you shitbags!!!
YOU HAD ONE JOB! ONE FUCKING JOB!!!23 -
-Let's start making the game!
-Yaay
-We should focus on performance optimization!
-But we don't have anything to optimize yet..
-Performance optimization!!!
1 month later
-OK you were right, we can't focus on performance now. We need to start making this game!
-Finally!
-So we're in pre-production now, let's do some R&D!
-Awesome, I wanted to start designing our workflow for adding new content, and maybe also loca..
-NO! That's unimportant! We must do R&D!
-OK what should we Arr-and-Dee?
-Performance optimization!!!5 -
My coworker just put in his 2 weeks' notice. We're already down a person. I have a wedding to plan and have in ~1 month.
I'm a wreck. Im sitting in my office crying right now while on a call for a dumb reason12 -
I am leaving my job from a very big company with very high paying package for doing my own startup.
1 month notice period on.10 -
So, more people = more effective?
Let's see how you can deliver a baby with 9 women with only 1 month
P. S:Good luck with that!!6 -
When you're working on an uni project with a fucking idiot who tests stuff with this kind of messages and then forget to remove them a few days before the deadline… fml.
I work at the frontend, he at the backend, so I shouldn't even have to check his code, but after seeing this I fucking have to.
Useless to say that he loaded these kind of placeholders also in the database.
So the admin name is "PieroGay", which is the name of the professor who will evaluate the project...
The worst thing is this bastard will graduate in 1 month, while I probably next year.28 -

Going through Master Card API docs to see how to integrate it, saw that they have sample code, checked Java sample code and found this:
String data = MessageFormat.format(

+ "\"transaction\":'{'\"amount\":{7},\"currency\":{8},\"reference\":{9},\"targetTransactionId\":{10}'}'," + "\"customer\":'{'\"ipAddress\":{11}'}}'",
apiOperation,
sourceOfFundsType,
cardNumber,
cardExpiryMonth,
cardExpiryYear,
cardSecurityCode,
orderReference,
transactionAmount,
transactionCurrency,
transactionReference,
targetTransactionId,

FOR FUCK SAKE what happened to JSONObject (for Android) class, I'm sure it is a waaaay better solution than that mess ...
And from Oracle:
JsonObject value = Json.createObjectBuilder()
.add("firstName", "John")
.add("lastName", "Smith")
.add("age", 25)
.build();
I guess that is a cleaner understandable solution than what master card has.8 -
So I started working at this IT company here in Oslo. Norway. After almost 6 months, I have almost not had anything to do, except little over just 1 month where I actually worked on a project, and now that is done. I have nothing to do, so today I applied for 11 jobs.8

I informed the CTO that one of the beta features from our Cloud Provider (that we used for free) was released to the public and now we're supposed to pay US$ 0.65 for each 1 million requests.
In our case, this means we would pay ~US$ 6.50 to support a businesses that receives literally millions in Advertising each month.
Then I was hit with "How can we reduce that cost? It's out of our budget!"
Oh, looks like we have a really small budget, so... Let me help them by announcing that I'll leave by the end of the week because I'm moving to another country \o/6 -
It's 21:42. I had 1 month to write a report on my internship. Day after tomorrow is submission. I'm starting now.
I deleted Facebook Inc.'s products long time ago, deleted YouTube app, removed Quora account, put filters on suggestions for Stack Exchange networks, blocked Reddit, stopped Spotify, started Trello/Wunderlist/Evernote to organise thoughts, ForestApp and StayFocusd for controlled browsing, deleted Tumblr etc. All this just to focus on the report and get it done as soon as possible.
Now I FOUND devRant! What the fuck world! Why!? I'm now ranting about issue on devRant with this rant. <- this sentence is a meta, if you didn't realise.9 -

My team has 1-on-1 check-up meetings with our boss about once a month.

I saw an article about the best open source text editors today. I was expecting to see atom, vs code etc. Well no, the author says "sublime text. It's not exactly open source or even freeware software, but there are lots of open source plugins for it."
Well why in world would you title the article best open source editors?? Why not call it what it is: "my lovefest for sublime text and some plugins." You could post it on your stupid blog with 1 reader per month where I would never find it and waste my time on it.9 -
Business User [1 PM]: So I know every month you’ve been using your dark magic SQL skills to transform my monthly data into better monthly data.

Owner of Company(Not My Boss): CooCook4Choo we moving you to project 2, forget about the previous one.
2 months go by, project is completed.
Boss: I've got another project for you
Me: Awesome!
1 month later...
PM: We're moving you back to project 1
Me: Why?
PM: Our senior dev resigned, we only have junior Devs and we need a lot of help before deployment next month.
Me: Why am i moving back to a project i was taken off of
PM: Where an agile company and you will be moved off many projects
Me: **Fuuuuuuuuuuck!!!* Ok i'll need documentation of everything that happened in the past three months, the current issue, what the current sprint revolves around and A demo of what has been added.
PM: Relax, I've got a lot of work myself, you will get them soon.

My boss said to me to make an E-commerce website.
I make E-commerce website within a month. All coding done by me no CMS only (HTML5, Bootstrap, CSS3, etc)

Me: 😠 But... (Fuck you, You Asshole) (in my mind).
Me: Sorry, next time I'll do it within a day.

The company I interned at last summer decided to adopt a JS framework a little over a year ago. The managers went with the old Angular 1.x because they didn't want a JS build process. Each page has ~100 script tags on it, and these are manually included in various files (no automated way to include dependencies). None of the CSS/JS files are minified, either.
They really should have chose Angular 2+, or an entirely different framework (React, VueJS). They're also just now upgrading the codebase from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.2 (5.6 support ended a long time ago, and security support ends this month).
I love the company itself but these practices are poor.
I may be working there full time eventually. I hope to eventually help with the inevitable transition to a newer framework once Angular 1.x is dead since I am an avid user of newer JS technologies. Any tips on convincing manager(s) towards newer technology? (Or at least convincing them to combine+minify these files in production to reduce # of requests and bandwidth.)
Also this company's product has millions of active users.16 -

The senior developer who's never had a smartphone in his life gave me a lecture on why my UI improvements to the mobile application were terrible and to revert them. He didn't want to hear squat from me, and was literally saying "You're not gonna win this" while I was trying to argue why these features were necessary.
1 month later, we get a Interaction Design expert to review the app. His recommendations were hardly surprising.
Except, now I have a tighter deadline and will work this weekend. Sigh.4 -
Its been 1 month and still no reply from my university IT department after i inforned them the login was transmitting usernames and passwords unencrypted over http and that the password field was case-insensitive for some fucking reason.

Almond: Look at these stats - our signup process sucks! We really need to make it better.
Boss: Yeah, maybe at some point. It doesn't affect live running though. Leave it for now.
<1 month later...>
Almond: These stats are getting worse. I really think we should redesign this to do x, y and z and avoid a, b and c.
Boss: Yeah, we probably should do at some point, but there's no rush. You can work on it if you really want to, but only if there's nothing else going on.
<2 months later...>
Boss: I'VE JUST SPOKEN TO TWO POTENTIAL CLIENTS, BUT OUR SIGNUP PROCESS SUCKS SO THEY'RE GOING ELSEWHERE! WE NEED THIS FIXED NOW!! WHERE ARE YOU ON THIS? CAN WE GET IT DONE AND DEPLOYED BY FRIDAY?!?!3 -

I remember during my internship in a startup company, we were 3 interns and one senior and everyone had an iMac with two monitors at the beginning and a private office for each.
Later I was moved with the rest of interns to a small 1 square meter workstation and my iMac was replaced with an old Pentium 4 PC.
After that, they took my 2nd screen away.
At the end of my internship period, they said they can't afford any of the interns and they kicked us (indirectly!) away and kept the senior only.
That is my 3-month professional career in depth!5 -

We needed a design for our Android and iOS App, everything should be done by an award-winning design agency. What we received was only a design for iPhone X. Only mockups as PDF, no icons, nothing. So we requested the Android design and an iPhone 8 one including icons, color codes and whatnot.
1 FUCKING MONTH LATER we got the new designs... They are all the FUCKING SAME DESIGN where some mockups were "displayed" on an android phone, and some on an iPhone. Still no icons though.
3 weeks pass and we geht FUCKING sketch files, to extract the shit ourselves. Thank you for nothing.
It took again nearly 3 month to get a "proper" Android design and all the assets. You could clearly see, that they never did anything for Android but well, we had to work with it. Award-winning design agancy my ass.5 -

There's this WebDesigner who wants every single website made pixel-perfect to his design.
We usually spend like 1 extra month on each website just because we can't do it pixel-perfect for each resolution

Am I allowed to insult the designer and swear against him every 5 minutes or so?5 -

Inmates are trying to take over the asylum again.
Got a message from the web team manager deeply concerned because since switching to the new logging framework, the site is significantly slower.
She provided no proof or any data to what 'significantly slower' means.
#1 The 'new logging' has been in place and logging for 5 years. We only recently depreciated the ILogger interface ('new' ILogger interface only has 1 method instead of 5)
#2 The 'old logging' was modified 5 years ago, so even if you were using the 'old' interface, the underlying implementation is still the same.
She tried to push the 'it wasn't this slow before' argument, so I decided to do some fact based analysis.
Knowing they deployed their logging changes couple of weeks ago, I opened up AppDynamics, looked at the average call time to Splunk (along with a few other http calls they are doing)
- caching services - 5ms
- splunk - 30ms
- Order Service - 350ms
- Product Data Service -525ms
Then I look at the data they are logging, for the month of June, over 5 million messages. At 30ms each, that's almost 42 hours spent logging errors...yes errors. Null reference exceptions, Argument exceptions, easily fixable stuff.
So far for the month of July (using the 'new' logging), almost 2.5 million errors. Pretty close so far with June's numbers.
My only suggestion was to fix the bugs in their code so they don't log so many errors.
Her response.."Can we have one of our developers review your logging code? We believe we can find ways to optimize the http requests"
Oh good Lord. I'm not a drinking man..but ...I might start.1 -

1. Skill required in PHP, Laravel, CakePHP, Wordpress, Opencart.
2. Bootstrap, CSS3 and HTML5 experience preferred.
3. JQuery, Vue.js, Angular.js, JavaScript, AJAX, HTML experience highly preferred.
and will pay 8000Rs/Month (112.88 USD)
Do they even know what they want? and at what cost they want to hire?15 -
A fucking year and a half of project that could have been 2 months if properly planned...
But every 1 month deadline is a rush to "just do it and we plan latter when stablished"... I wait 2 weeks for things to be approved so they can be changed after I fucking implement it.
Now everything is a mess that I just introduce more mess to move on and go home by the end of the day. -

Don't you just hate when your boss goes like:
"Why isn't this feature working?"
SHIT FUCK, IF I KNEW THE REASON, MAYBE I WOULD HAVE FIXED THAT SHIT, INNIT?
WHAT KIND OF FUCKING QUESTION IS THAT?
"Well you should have tested better"
IT TOOK A MONTH FOR 1 USER TO SEE THAT BUG, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? YOU EXPECT ME TO SEE THAT BUG IN THE FEW HOURS OF TESTING I CAN ACTUALLY DO FOR THIS PROJECT?
"There also are other 15 project to get done"

After 1 week working on a screen (design, logic, testing) my boss comes to me saying that what I've been work won't be necessary any longer and I should discard it.
1 month later asks for that same stuff and I tell him (jus like he said I should do) that I discarded the code.
Starts calling me names and how useless I am (this was normal).
So I pick up my stuff and just get out while saying: "please, if you are so damn good, you can do that shit yourself, I quit!"
Was there for 1 miserable year and that was my best choice I made till today.
Right now the company closed cause all the devs ended up leaving him6 -
Excerpts from "Bastard devops from hell" checklist:
- Insistently pronounce git with a soft "G" and refuse to understand people not using that pronunciation, the same goes for jithub, jitlab, jit lfs, jitkraken etc.
- Reject all pull requests not in haiku format, suggest the author needs to be more culturally open minded when offending.
- increment version numbers ONLY based on percentage code changed: Less than 1% patch increment, less than 5% minor increment, more than that major version increment.
- Cycle ALL access keys, personal tokens, connection strings etc. every month "for security reasons"
- invent and only allow usage of your own CI/CD language, for maximum reuse of course. Resist any changes to it after first draft release23 -
There was a computer programming teacher in my 1st semester who taught C. He used to have this conventional way of teaching C like other Engineering subjects which was going to more theories before writing actual codes.
These are the conversations with him.
(First day, a guy asks him some questions.)
Guy: Sir, why do we need to learn C? There are other languages used extensively for other tasks like python, etc. Why bother with this boring C?
Teacher: C is used to learn other languages. After learning C, you can easily learn other languages.
Guy: Sir, where is C's application? Where is it used?
Teacher: It is used in academics to lay foundation for students to learn other languages which are used to build softwares.
(Fucking Hilarious)
(A month after he was asking some questions to students.)
Teacher: What is an array? What is an array-name?
Student 1: Array, is this collection of data that can be stored in a single type.
Teacher: Then what is an array-name?
Student 1: I don't know.
Teacher: (angrily) Array-name is a definition itself.
(We were supposed to answer that. It was a standard definition.)15 -

You pick up your mobile phone and you have to pay a subscription of $49.99/month to be able to unlock your phone as many times as you want.
Your mobile network allows you to make 1 phone call free for the day, post which you have to pay $1.50 per call. Data costs are seperate and its sold to you as a package, labled as an "Offer".

Job seeking is mentally and emotionally tiring.
Done several skill tests that I think I killed every single one of them.
I've heard "Can you go through your resume?" a million times, 1 company hasn't said yes or no for 1 month, I have at least 2 job interviews a week. Recruiters low balling.
I also feel that being hispanic is more challenging. They think I didn't code anything back when I was living in my country. 10 years of experience reduced to the ones I've been working in the US.
It's been a long and tedious journey.
Thanks for bear with me up to this point...19 -
Just checked my laptop uptime and it's been on one charge for exactly 1 month, with average use and aggressive tlp/powertop settings 😰18

I recently got into an interview where the interviewer made a huge mistake:
R: “what’s your resignation period?”
Me: “well, long story short I’m working on a contract so it’s actually short, just 1 month”
R: “mhhh could you make it 2 weeks somehow? We may really need to start sooner”
This is a sentence you shouldn’t say as a recruiter as now I know:
- You are desperate to find someone
- You have a time urgency
- You failed to find someone before
- You basically confirmed you want me in9 -
This was interview in so called startup.
BTW I don't get point in company calling themselves as startup when they are 5-6 years old, just call your self small sized company.
1 - online interview with HR, Normal.
2 - online technical interview - 1 hour of discussion with Lead.
3. On-fucking-site technical interview - ~1 hour of detailed technical discussions.
4. Coding task- submitted successfully
5. Zoom meeting to discuss on coding task - just told it was good and started discussion on their dead project which was unrelated to job position but I've worked with that kind of thing so it was fine.
6. Trial Day Onsite - Gave me to draw a fucking BPMN chart - fuck you motherfuckers - I knew it was waste of time.
Fuck this kind of Hiring process which takes >1.5 month.9 -

Q: Why haven't you pushed your code to the repo? Did you encountered any issues?
A: Why it has to be in the repo when the source code is available on my computer and I copy it into shared folder from time to time?
Everything is set up and was served on a silver plate. I would even assist with the commits before they get used to using it. More than half a year have passed. Yet the source codes are nowhere to be found.4 -
Business Intelligence, the most confused market technology has to offer. (Perhaps rivaled only by machine licking. Learning, whatever)
Step 1: develop a product that can replace a company's database guys. Make it cost more than the database guys.
Step 2: Show off product to managers using images of the product that the managers will love, but never have the skills to do themselves.
Step 3: Fucking obviously the managers buy it.
Step 4: Fire half the database staff.
Step 5: Managers give the BI tools to their remaining database guys ANYWAYS and instruct them to use it
Step 6: Database guys spend a month learning the new tool because management "wants to use it too".
Step 7: Database guys now use this new system for reports but have trouble using it for complex use cases, as it was designed for simple use cases. Meanwhile, management will never, ever touch the tool again.
Step 8: Hire new guys for reporting, because the remaining database guys can't complete both their normal tasks *and* the reports.
Step 9: Database guys are expensive. Go to step 1.1 -
The CEO has the audacity to ask why the features released in the last month were less than in the past.
Did you forget that you made every single person in the company take a 1-week furlough? Are you serious?5 -
There was an android project that I got from my senior.
he told me that another developer already completed most the project and all I have to do is minor changes...
Well when i saw, i was amazed that the code he commented is more than the actual working code without any structure.
He copied most of code from internet.
If it's not working, put in comment else use it.
It took me a whole month to figure out what's going on.
And another 2 months to fix the issues.
Well in last my senior told me that the developer took 1 year to write this code
(to be honest any normal developer can complete that project in less than 3 month)2 -
1 on 1 meetings with manager throughout the year
Manager: You're doing really well! Keep it up!
Me: Cool, thanks!
1 on 1 meetings with my manager a month or two ago
Manager: You're still killing it! I'd really like to see you challenge the status quo since you're the newest on the team. I think we could benefit from fresh perspective.
Me: Ok, cool, I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable so I'll do that.
Me: *starts challenging process, team structure, and company norms in meetings*
Manager: *confused pikachu face*
1 on 1 meetings now, right before performance management
Manager: I really need you to start picking up more important work. You're not performing well relative to others at your level, and I won't be able to represent you well during performance management.
Me: 😐10 -
*in Sprint planning listening to my PM creating tasks*
PM (to Team): So this will be an MVP we can expand on in the future. Do let me know upfront if any tasks should not be in the Sprint.
Team Manager (to PM): Let's see... Yeah I think you've nailed it... Good.
Developer (to Team): Guys, I see the task for the frontend team to integrate machine learning doesn't have any details.
PM (to Developer): Ooh machine learning! Good catch!
PM (to Team Manager): This was one of the tasks we really needed this quarter, will we still be on track?
Team Manager (to PM): Yeah no worries we'll add it as part of the MVP design in Confluence.
PM: Okay assigning the task now. *Assigns to Developer*
*Team Manager goes on 1 month vacation*
Me (thinking to myself): Wtf3 -
FUCK YOU PHP, WHY THE FUCK DO YOU GIVE ME DECEMBER 1ST WHEN I DO
strtotime('-1 month', '12/31/2015)
USING DateTime PRODUCES THE SAME FUCKING RESULT. ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED OR WHAT?
YEAH I KNOW NOVEMBER DOESN'T HAVE 31ST BUT YOU COULD AT LEAST RETURN 30TH OR EVEN RAISE A WARNING, YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT.10 -
Guy I work with messaging me: Hey could you check my SQL syntax to get the date part for the month and year.
Me thinking: Ughhh this is going to be something stupid I know it. Why doesn't he just check it himself?
I check it... 2 queries that are very, very, very... simple... and similar except one returns last year (2017) and the other returns the current year (2018)
Me: Not sure what your issue is... I'm not getting any syntax errors. They are executing
Him: Well it shouldn't show 2017, it should show 2018
Me thinking: learn to debug you lazy fuck
Me: Well you're adding a -1 to your year...(Not sure why your even adding to it if your just getting the current month and year)
Him: Oh you're correct! That makes sense
Waste of my time2 -

In early 2016 I got a front end web development job.
<1 month later, was fired from thatfront end web development job.
Reason: After several years focused primarily on social media marketing, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing and couldn’t catch up fast enough to what their shop was using. My coding skills were way more out of date than I ever anticipated.
In retrospect, the only reason I got the job was that their 3rd party skills testing website repeatedly wouldn’t submit my results and didn’t change up the questions, so by the time it finally did, I had guessed 90% of the answers correctly. I registered as a false positive and that was, apparently, enough for their HR person. -
Jesus, using vim in browser is such a beautiful thing, thought it's pointless.
Also, FUCK managers/bosses that change their technologies for no fuckin reason.
I didn't spend 1+ month to learn .NET core, which is a fine piece of tech and you suddenly come and say that we should move to PHP because the new guys you hired are PHP devs and don't know a single line of .NET.
I DONT GIVE A FUCK.
TAKE YOUR PHP AND SHOVE IT UP TO YOUR ASS.10 -
Fuck JavaScript, seriously I have spent the last 8 hours trying to build a fucking basic search application that would take me < 1 hour in any other fucking programming language on the planet. I AM FUCKING DONE WITH THIS SHIT. I'd rather pay some dude with a long ass fucking beard who calls himself a "Frontend Engineer" WHATEVER THE FUCK THAT MEANS. Because my backend oriented brain cannot fucking handle all of the frameworks, and modules, and different versions of the same fucking language. Plus its like JavaScript was designed so that you can't not write spaghetti code. FUCK THIS. I'm going back to writing static fucking template code that is used by a fucking backend language that only changes every few fucking years, not every month.
Have a great day. :)4 -

Client to Company :This is a complex 1 month approx task. We need this feature
Company forgets to tell employee developer about this.
Meanwhile Client to Company after one month.
Client to Company: We are just 1 week away from the deadline, what's the status of the work in progress.
Company to client : It's going well, we will get back to you on the day of demo.
Company to employee developer: We have this complex task, you need to complete it in 1 week.
Developer mental status gets fucked with over burdened hectic work which has to be completed in a week having no idea of fuck up by the company which already had the information of the task one month ago but just forgot to tell the developer.2 -

So here's is the thing.
For some weird reason I decided to work at a VC funded startup. For 15k year,(I live in a really poor country).
So, let me describe the hell I'm in now, and if for some good grace you happen to be hiring, please consider saving me from the horror that's ahead.
Company got funded 5 months ago, main owners are, an economist and a civil engineer with no programming habilities whatsoever.
They took 1 month to assemble "a killer team", with no hiring expertise they handpicked a CTO that came in 1 month later and took a month of vacation in his first month of work.
He didn't do any specification of the system that needs to be built.
The 2 naive owners hired the rest of this "killer team".
The team is good, but have no appreciation of planning.
They've built and rebuilt the backend system twice, once in graphql and the second with plain http (is not real rest, just a http api), in front of, guess what a mongo database.
This mongo DB is not only one, but 7, because we have 7 microservices, and each has its own database.
After some time, they decided to fire their CTO, and hire one more programmer(that's me), because the CTO wasn't doing anything.
The app has 3 parts, the app per se, a business version, and a help desk, guess what the helpdesk just appeared last week on the radar.
Long story short, we have one month to deliver what couldn't be built in 5.
When I decided to work for these people, I did not imagine the kind of clusterfuck that I was getting into.
It took me 1 month to realize the whole situation, now, I really would like to see some help from the deities of any religion, not for the project, that project is doomed.
It's how I'll pay the bills after that clusterfuck collapses that worries me.
Now in the startup no one is talking about how stupid the whole situation is. Or how far back we are. And at this point there's very little that could be done about it, I have a feeling that it could still be accomplished, but it's fading day after day.
I will do my best to live the best of this experience, and do as the musicians in the Titanic and keep playing the music even after knowing the Titanic is sinking.4 -
"Come on, please try a bit harder. Why don't the IT students make an app to sell local goods online or something? Even I, without knowing anything about tech, consider this to be easy".
Wise words from a non tech substitute teacher I once had the honor of studying under. When he checked everyone's 1 month project proposals, he expressed his disappointment.
I wonder if he works in management now.1 -
The team spirit in our team has improved over the past 1 month with this etiquette..
*walk up to team member
*no greetings
Just say " bring yourself back online"
Watch them light up..share those ten Westworld seconds..ask for what you need
..and the hell back to your desk
..cheers -
I hate my freelancer life.
1. No weekends
2. No particular time to close
3. Work for 12 to 14 hours without sleep sometimes
4. Keep explaining the dumb clients about how development is not wordpress.
Its all fucked up. I have no life.
My average Lines of code this month is around 700 LOC/day. Whereas the average that showed on internet is 100 LOC/day.
I have choosen a hellish life.10 -
I don't know which is worse:
1. My project manager telling me that I will have to make a whole project on my own within a month (frontend, backend, etc etc) for our major client and if I make it, we will get a bigger project for a longer period or
2. The colleague next to me being loud (speaking to himself, chewing things) at random intervals.2 -
Me (junior with 1 month of work experience): have to shutdown the service on pre-release server, then reload it. Best case: ~10 seconds of bo, no one will know...I hope.
Result: 13 seconds of bo, no one noticed.
Senior: I'm deleting the tables and reload them through sh script. Oh fuck the reload script doesn't work......
5 minutes of bo for her.
What did we learn from this? I think nothing 🤔 -
All these super expensive and fancy enterprise tools. CloudWatch, AppDynamics, Grafana, Splunk and whatnot. Spent a month trying to figure out why the fuck the app does not perform well.
Took 1 day with tcpdump, awk and gnu utils to figure out why.
Should anyone need a tcpdump analyzer -- try my awk script. Shows response times of each network call w/o impacting app performance :)

When the guy with his master's who's job you were told you weren't qualified for performed the following all in one query:
1. A massive many to many join on a 4 million row table.....to itself on in inner query through a linked server.
2. Decides to try and join this massive inner query (see step 1) to another table on a second many to many join.
3. Writes a function for month. Yes instead of month(literallyadate)
Then this guy emails me to ask if I can optimize it because we yelled at him for trying to insert 216 GB of data into a table (again on a massive many to many joined disaster). We told him if a query was taking more than 40 minutes we needed to see it.
I regret saying that now...should have just bought more space ;)3 -

My worst dev experience was my first software as freelance...
1 month codding
When delivering the app the client didnt want it anymore...
Two years latter the client calls me because he had a problem... Merging hundreds of access 97 databases... Exactly what my software did (besides editing, filters and remove duplicates)
Told him I got mad, deleted the source code and was already working on a company...
He had to pay for a software company to do the same 10 times the cost4 -
!Rant
Wrote a crawler and now has 18 million records in the queue. About 500.000 files with metadata.
1 month until deadline and we have to do shit many things.
Now we discover we have a flaw in our crawler ( I don't see it as a bug ).. We don't know how much metadata we missed, but now we have to write a script that scrapes every webpage that we've already visited and get that metadata..
What's the flaw you ask? Some people find it funny to put capital letters in their attribute names.. *kuch* Microsoft.com!! *kuch*
And what didn't we do? We didn't lower case each entire webpage and then, only then, search the webpage for data..5 -

For the past 7 days since I was ordered to learn react wich originated this rant https://devrant.io/rants/805055/...
I somehow know more of it then my team that is on it for the past month or more.
Looks like the "standard" is to pass refs everywhere instead of proper props/state utilization.
At first I was confused by the usefulness and credibility of it but after a literal 1 fucking minute google search I found it to be a bad practice discouraged even by official docs.
Wtf? No one read the docs?2 -

My previous manager reached out to me (we still work at the same company; different clients/projects/countries). Offered a very temporary project (1-2 months tops). I look at the client's requirements -- sounds super easy, doable in 1 month.
I dig more into the docs, details, other references. Turns out, this invitation has been published publicly and anyone could reach out to them applying for the project. Even I could, outside of my employer.
And the budget is $60k
And now I'm a bit mad at myself for not finding this page earlier. Had I been accepted for the job, I'd have earned $60k in 1 fucking month. And now I'll only get my usual salary
FUCK!
Definitely adding that website to my bookmarks.1 -
I am 15 and just last month I told my client to stop breaching the contract and honor your word like a man over whatsapp. He just ignored it like a pussy so I told him over a phone call, "you have 2 options, either 1) you pay me and honor your word or 2) I will sue your ass" and hung up. 3 days had passed and I was getting fed up of that twat, plus school was starting soon. I called him up and told him he is fired and that he can keep his shitty idea and shove it up his ass. I hung up and since then I haven't heard or seen the wanker. Life has been great since then😝😎😜!17

@dfox (this might not be the correct way to tag here, but we'll see once I post)
A few suggestions:
1. Being able to move between day, month etc. by swiping left or right
2. A web interface (to rant from a laptop/desktop)
3. Link "framing" (a-la WhatsApp, messenger, where links get a frame with a picture and description)
4. basic markdown (bold, quotes, etc. a-la Reddit. this might exist but I haven't run into it, and if it does maybe a preview window for the result would be helpful)
Really like the app, cheers!12 -

Thought I had a dead pixel in the center of a brand new display (<1 month). Thankfully it was just dust, but damn I was pissed.3

Some years ago but it's funny.
The company give to me a new laptop with windows Home Edition,
After few months I have installed Pro Version.
1 month later the laptop didn't work anymore, nothing on display, no beeps, zero.
Tried to replace ram and check but nothing works.
The CTO asked the supplier and they asked about SO, and they said it's not turning ON because i have installed Windows Pro.
Than the CTO had a brilliant idea: try put the hard disk in another laptop and install Windows Home, and put back in the defective one. I refused to to that, it's stupid and he insisted, then I put the laptop in his desk and I said: if you want do this you can do, im not stupid enough to do this.
He got really mad, 1 week later i got a brand new one 😅5 -
Spent 1 month creating a piece of software for a school project and when I speak of it to someone on the IT business they tell me:
"Really? Once you start working you'll be using software that'll allow you to do something twice as hard in about 2 hours"5 -
Migration in progress (long one, lasting over a month)
PM: Let's schedule a meeting to discuss migration progress
PM: Let's schedule a meeting to agree on what should we test
PM: Let's schedule a meeting to get specs of the new infra
Seriously, PMs. One 1 hour long meeting costs at least 4 hours of productive time (1 hour for travel, 1 hour for the meeting, 1+ hour for preparing for the meeting, 1+ hour for post-meeting discussions). And more often than not all meetings end with "We will come back to you later in regards to <some question not answered during meeting>" and it always means "we'll continue this chat via emails"
Why can't you first ask "do we need a meeting or can we sort this out via email?" ??? Or are you intentionally wasting everyone's time?4 -
Not my week for tech.
5 year old 21" desktop monitor burns out. 2nd monitor, so at least not completely down.
Then my toddler reached for my root beer and spills it on my 1 month old laptop. I quickly pull the plug and turn upside down, get it wiped off and pray. Next day, arrow and enter keys a little sticky and battery is blown. The 2 exact fucking reasons I bought the new laptop. (keyboard issues and battery)
Keep em coming tech gods.4 -

As of today, 12:11 CEST, my days as a student who hates school are over. In one month, i will be a programmer. Feels fucking great.

Last week I received an invitation to lead the development of a e-commerce redesign, replatforming and data migration. I've only been here for 1 month for my new position in Ops, and I already miss software development!
All I do everyday is just typing commands on the terminal.
If I am feeling fancy, I may create a script or two (that's the closest thing I have to writing code).
I hope I can get more interesting thing to do in the future. If not I can't see myself doing this in long term. It's OK for occasional tasks or added responsibility but I don't want to do it as my main job.11 -
Man soo much has happened. I broke ( 2. Months ago ) my main phone = Oneplus 1. Then I proceeded to throw my sim card into my backup phone = iPhone 4. So within that time I've started working at the same remote company my brother/ I work for as a python dev. But I am deffinatly learning as I go. Been there a month this week! So with this being my second job. I finally had enough money to buy nonessential so 4 day ago I ordered a new glass and digitizer assembly for my main phone it came today I fixed in just under 2 hours as my first phone repair. Pretty proud

!rant !dev
Finished side project last month. It was hell of a ride, about 300-350 hours of programming and solving problems per month for over half a year, including my regular remote job.
Side project was 1 hour commute time from my house.
There were days where I was working over 16 hours per day.
During this roller coaster I also changed my diet to keto and lost about 12kg / 26 lbs.
Kept my regular remote job where I am the only backend developer.
Donated to eff.
Started listen to audiobooks and exercise to keep my mind clear and focused.
Finally I discovered devrant.
It was all crazy shit and I feel happy I did it because now 5 days after I finished this side project I started to think that my life is not so fucked up I thought it is. This gave me my confidence back.
Now it’s time to rest before some new crazy shit would hit my life.
Peace1 -

Lady next door was visiting me. She is 67. She is a kinda psychologist and she needed a new site. With her just sitting here, i generated one with gpt and explained her html a bit. The instructions are as follow:
- if you add a page, duplicate the other page and remove the text you don't want. Do not remove html unless it's around content what you don't use anymore.
- learned her how to copy a href and change the link.
So, first, she asked me for a website. The last thing I want is somebody's website in maintenance or even work on it. Making "beautiful"/commercial sites is not my hobby.
Now, for 1,80 per month she has a domain name (i asked if it will have SSL, that's still bit unclear) and 1,- hosting per month. I think it can be even cheaper. It doesn't support php/python and stuff.
TLDR; i gave someone a HTML site generated in 5 minutes, tried a few style sheets and she was happy with it. Bye bye designers :P No one cares! Also full responsive.16 -

SEO guy: Hey, did you change anything in the site because the site is not ranking anymore on Google. The URLs are dynamically generated in front end. Google does not like that.
ME: But you said that Google loves React. It took me nearly 1 month to migrate the code in React.
Fucking hell.11 -
3 months project:
- deadline changed to 2 months
- specs delayed by 1 month
Now a 1 month project...
Started one month earlier so I could achieve something...
Now, 23 days to deadline: here, take this 20 page PDF with 200 questions ( witch can be drastically reduced) to make the new form section (2nd section out of 6).
Me: OK, but it could be nice to have everything at once so I could design it accordingly , I can see questions here that are repetitive , it would spare me a lot of work if I could see the big picture.
she: Just put those (200 f#cking questions) on and show me so I can see if its good and deliver the rest based on it.
OK, fuck it I'm just let hibernate create all the fucking tables and I figured out where to get all the questions she wants anyway... there are 7 categories with repeated questions...(about 150)...
Just wonder what's so hard to do her job... she had 3 months to do it and I only have 1... -
Banned from travel
I was going to go to France this month to meet with the people of my company and have physical training and ended up finding out that I have military service when I went to renew my passport.
Since I found out I have become extremely devastated, I either have to serve for 1 year or wait 2 years after I turn 30 in order to pay a fine and be able to get out of this fucking prison, the worst thing is I had planned this trip with my manager in December and had no idea about this shit, I also contacted my friends in europe to plan a meetup and then it all went down the drain.13 -
Holy crap, just started working again on a personal project after a 1-month hiatus... Really struggling to get my head back where it was, I have (almost) no clue what I was doing or why.
Even the commit log and the comments and docs I've left around seem empty somehow.
Any good tips/tools for retracing steps? How do you start working on a codebase you've never touched before?1 -
1. Wrote super complex snippet w/o comments.
2. Commit & push.
3. Read code after 1 month
4. Ask yourself how you wrote that.1 -
Currently at my work they are making everyone assist to the office at least 1 day of the week, some people live in other cities, there is even one coworker that has to take a flight once a month. We don't even do anything different on the office, same work, nobody likes to come.4
-
1) keeping my shit together until my 3 month notice period is done.
2) moving cross country.
3) starting a new job with a new tech stack which I'm not as experienced in. -
This always gets me:
Developers complaining that their 4 year old / cheap ass computer is slow.
Get. A. New. One.
It's not that hard.
Here, let me do one for you:
https://computeruniverse.net/en/...
I just went to a site that delivers across Europe, and selected a cheap laptop with a decent CPU and SSD. Short on RAM, sure, and without a Windows License. But you can buy RAM for an additional 50$, and that brings you to a total of 550€, delivery included. And it will WORK. And it will be fast.
It's too expensive?
No, not exactly. Wherever you are in the world, if you can code decently, good enough to have the right to complain about development tools, you are eligible to at least 10$ per hour income as a freelancer across the globe. I've had such opportunities offered to me by many organizations, especially non-profit ones that need cheap employees. I actually was offered more but let's stick to 10$ per hour.
So that's 1600$ per month. Enough to buy 3 such laptops. Oh, taxes, I forgot. So you get 2 laptops. Wait! You need food and everything else. Well if you're in a country where that offer actually makes sense, then it's likely that you can live off of 400$ per month quite well. Maybe 800$ if you need to pay rent.
So that's roughly 1 month of work for a laptop that will make you not waste time on waiting for stuff.
Sweet! 1 Month! What does it get me?
Well assuming that you have no laptop, it gets you A JOB that pays you 1600$ per month.
But if you DO have a laptop, you can sell it for cheap, and benefit from the following:
1. Boot-up time from 30-60 seconds to 10 seconds.
2. Installing software - from 1 minute to 10 seconds.
3. Opening a browser - from 10 seconds to 1 second.
4. Opening an advanced text editor (Atom, VS.Code) - from 10 seconds to 1 second.
5. Searching for a file on your entire hard drive - from 1 hour to 2 minutes.
....
You get the point. Waiting is reduced by several times.
So how much do you really wait when coding?
Well are you compiling? Are you opening a new project and the IDE needs to re-index the files? Are you opening programs like a terminal emulator, browser and such? Are you using virtual machines for dev environments?
Well all of these processes become several times faster. Depending on how often you do it, you'll be saving yourself from 1 hour per day to upto 4 hours per day (my case, where a HDD would be just out of the question).
How much is that time worth? At least 10$ per day. If you're working for 20 days per month, 240 days per year, that's a total of 2400$. And for the life time of that crappy laptop of 2 years, that's 4800$ saved. And that's with hugely conservative numbers. Nobody pays 10$ per hour any more, except if you've just started in the industry. I know because I've been there.
Please, for all that's sacred to you, justify right here, right now, HOW THE FUCK can you not afford to get that 8GB of RAM, that cheap ass SSD for 100$, or even a brand new laptop (hey! it's even portable and has FHD graphics on it!) for 550$.
That's why every time I hear someone who is a professional developer complain that they don't have money for a decent machine, I have to ask: why the fuck are you wasting yours and everyone else's time?!10 -
Somehow they felt like the first day of a month isn't always n°1 (and last day might be smaller than 10)8

Yesterday I had a discussion with a freelancing developer
Me: You're already earning good, why are you freelancing?
He: Freelancing is my hobby.
Me: !! Why don't you participate in some open source development? I do.
He: How much do you earn there?
Me: In terms of money? few bucks as donation for 1 coffee in a month.
He: few bucks only !!!
Me: Opensource development can be good for your career. You can get a good job or promotion....
He: I believe in certainty.
Me: Hmmm5 -
Today I dont feel that good.
I have only 1 month of my holiday temporary job left. After that Im going to university, the place that i have been dreaming about, the place where finaly i would finish my projects, where i would meet people like me that could support, help me with my passions.
I have no idea where i got that wave of saddnes. Normaly i dont feel that way. Job is unconfortable and sometimes stressing a bit but it is not the end of the world.
I just want to stay in confy bed for the whole day but i cant, i need that money for uni.
I tried to code yesterday but i just couldnt focus! Always when i try to finish the project, no matter what it is i just lose my motivation, its just gone.
Sometimes I wonder if that university is going to be as good as i was imaginig it, after numerous rants on devrant about their uni im not so sure... That dosent help me with my mood.
Is my terrible mood caused by loneiness? bad diet? or lazyness?
I just dont know... I just want to feel better. I just want to survive that month somehow, without that crushing feeling and constant depression.3 -
*So I have a function where the date is formatted as 20180317 and get returned if I pass a date to it.*
Junior Dev: I'm selecting March as a month but it's showing 20180217 and not 20180317, what should I do?
Me: I've written function for formatting date just go there and there will be date.getMonth() just add 1 to it by doing +1.
Junior Dev: It's still not working!!!.
So I went there and checked what she did, and she did this .....
date.getMonth(+1);2 -
Interviewer said that passing technical interview means that 90% of the time I will get the offer.
In the final interview with management, I can't answer some questions because I didn't study. Isn't final interview should just about getting to know each other like hobby, interest, talking about company products?
They gave me some puzzle to solve :(
After that, they wait another 1 week just to tell me I don't pass. Why the fuck they wait 1 week just to tell me that? They should just tell me 1 day after!
I still have other job openings right now, but the job searching has been very depressing.
I will give it like 1 more month. But if I can't get any leads, I will just give it up. Maybe tech is not the right job for me.
I will just go back to my old job in non-tech. It's not exactly my dream job, but at least they don't treat me like shit like this.9 -
1. Apply for a 3 month Java internship.
2. Prove your worth and skills during it not even liking Java.
3. Get invited to work full time after it without further internship in any technology you want.
4. Join the company when convenient year later as they really want you.
5. Be proud of how good you are that they still want you.
6. Get your own project in language and technology you prefer.
7. Profit.3 -
Story Time
One of my cousins works in an MNC and his CTC is 30 Lakhs per annum ( USD 36,591 )
My mom used to compare me to that cousin, like how Asian countries parents stereotypically do,
Until last week when my mom and aunt were chatting and, out of nowhere, my aunt explained to my mom, what the difference between CTC and actual salary is.
The cousin's CTC is above amount but he takes home only 1 Lakh a month making his take-home salary about 12 Lakhs per annum ( USD 14,636 )
I am a little relieved, now that my parents understand that CTC doesn't mean take-home salary which was something I was trying to explain them before, but they used to brush me off saying I was looking for excuses.2 -
I have been coding for 2 years, 1 month at a company
Teammate1 has been coding for a year, a genius, learns everything in a week, knows all major js frameworks, refuses to adhere to any rules except no rebase on pushed (luckily)
Teammate2 has been coding for a year, learns slowly, very reliable, has no common sense at all
Teammate3 the designer, really has the skills but always busy, never has time for a meeting, gets very mad if it looks different from her original plan.
We're all college students short of money so they all want to work for clients. I don't have the leadership skills / charisma for this.1 -
I cancelled prime a few months ago so when I was doing BF shopping on Amazon yesterday, delivery is now 1wk instead of 2-days.
And shipping apparently is $9 if you don't meet the $25 minimum and manually select free shipping; I remember it was $6 before...
So a few thoughts I had:
1. Amazon really must need the Prime memberships to cover all the shipping costs since it is now a pain in the ass to get free shipping on the checkout page.
2. Americans really want instant gratification? Waiting a week is that painful?
In contrast, stuff from China take about a month but are much cheaper
3. The only thing that's worth buying via Amazon now is electronics and stuff that are fragile... And food that's on sale because they have to uphold quality
4. Lucky for me, I get 1 week shipping, I have more time to cancel orders... Which is what I actually did8 -
According to SimilarWeb, Bing has more than 1 billion visits each month which means that millions of people do not find what they are looking for...
Someone has to stop this madness!1 -

Wtf are you taking man?
You’re supposed to be an experienced engineer but what the fuck are you doing leaking null pointer exceptions everywhere you go?
Just 1 more month. Good thing my manager isn’t renewing your contract.
Fuck!!!! -
We've had a project we knew was going to happen since February, and every 2-3 weeks we have been requesting feature requirements and gear to work on (hardware for test automation).
1 month ago we got the official request. 2 weeks ago sales said no to ordering equipment. Sales is now asking for weekly progress updates.
My boss said we have documentation of our asking and the group director (bosses' boss) is behind us saying, "work to make it function, not to get it done quickly."
Sometimes things work out. -
It's been 1 month in my first dev job.
I'm really happy but there is one problem...
Despite my role as a full stack dev in a fullstack team, I deal with only frontend stuff so far.
I asked to get some backend tasks from my boss, and he said "in due time".
Is it because I'm a junior? Is it normal?5 -
Worst week ever.
Servers are on fire. Respoinse times out of control
Some SIMPLE SQL queries (literaly select * from whatever where Id = id) timouts at 30 seconds.
No idea what's goining on (And I have full logs of all api calls and all DB queries). No way to find how to corelate this data.
Ok, I added 1000$/month on Azure and the problem is "masked", but not resolved.
I have dumps, I have logs I have everything, why the fuck I can't find the 1 or 2 APIs causing that ?!!!
Now I feel better.10 -
I started as intern at the place. Worked unpaid for 4 months. Then they started paying. That's when shitload started. 5 web developers and 10 projects. 1 months later they fire one of us. Next month they fire another one. 3 developer and 8 projects. No documentation for they projects that were already started before I went there. Provide support for 3 year old project and nothing for reference. Salary was paid 10/15 days after the month war over. I couldn't take it anymore so I have a two months notice before leaving job. A month later all of the 3 android developers gave their notice. After we left, they haven't still paid us our final month's salary. Reason was it was not formal east of leaving and they projects we worked on haven't rolled out to market yet.
Talked and then mailed them the resignation two months in advance is not formal then I don't know what is.
Also how can the project be rolled out when there is specification change every 6 hour to 1 day on the project. Also we completed what was given to us and then the project hasn't rolled out because of new changes in the specification. -
Before starting the project team lead told me this is the page of apidoc which will be updated after each new service call so that the communication is clear and i know the parameter of each api call well to use them.
1 month passed and no new service call appeared so i got curious and took a look at his code. He has created 8 f****g nrw calls but did not update the docs.1 -
Starting programming project at the collage with 6 month running time.
In team we agree every day to start "soon"...
1 month left.. everybody gets hectic..
..Until then i had finished the project alone..

GM sucks. (General Motors)
There HR sucks, can't call on booked time, for phone screening and wanted me after I applied for job 4 months ago. I still entertained them. But now, it has gone too far.
I am blacklisting GM for life. I will never ever work for them, unless they give me 1 Million per month2 -
The perks of working for a .NET shop:
1. 130€ of credit to burn on Azure every month, so I can run some long builds there, to have VPN/proxies for free that are not easily blacklisted and whatever else I can think of. Today I set up a VM for my wife to RDP into, so she doesn't have to do her job search on her company laptop (which is the only computer she has right now). -
Can someone help me how to focus for 6 straight hours/day until the end of this month? Got 1 last exam left till i graduate with comp. science degree. I have to study databases but only theory. And i fucking hate reading text. I hate theory. I like solving problems analytically and theory is my weakness.
I read theory shit for a few mins and then distract myself with mobile games and tiktok for a few hours... I cant concentrate studying this shit...
How do i forcefully focus.
Can someone suggest me the best app that actually works to help me focus or something? Or some yt sound waves music?14 -
Does anyone every get JOB from Linkedin ??
I am continuously applying from last 1-2 month and I just got.. Thanks for your interest but we are not moving with your application. No Matter if it is basic skill level Job or higher one? I wonder if I am the only one facing this13 -
Difference between 2023-01-01 00:00:00 and 2023-12-31 23:59:59 is 11 months, 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds ; so almost a year (by one second)
Difference between 2023-01-01 00:00:00 and 2023-01-31 23:59:59 is the same, almost a month by 1 second.
Same for february (even with 28 being the last day).
But then, 2023-03-01 00:00:00 and 2023-03-31 23:59:59 gives me :
1 month, 2 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds.
WHY, are there fucking 34 days in March ? Is this a bug ? Is it confused with February being the previous month ?
Why would PHP do this to me ?
Why the hell is it always so painful to work with dates, it's not even like I'm stretching the standard library or using raw timestamps to hack things together
I used the diff method of PHP 7.4 DateTime, is someone wants to try it24 -
Okay... I need to confess.
I actually like the idea of counting arrays from 1 like it is in some languages.
It makes code cleaner.
Think about it.
You would never need to subtract 1 from count/size/length or add 1 for things like the month in javascript because the first item would be at index 1 and many many errors wouldn't be happening because we don't need to force our minds to think another way. I learned counting from 1 after I learned to walk so it's the most natural thing to do. Just because the software/hardware below our language works that way doesn't mean we can not abstract this behavior away. What's your opinion about this? Am I wrong?12 -

Coworker: "Hey, I have an idea. I think it will be much better if, one month before launch, we pivot this project from using 2D animation to using 3D Animation with Motion Capture! It will save us so much time!"
Me: I'd be happy to look into it for you, but those technologies are very labour intensive and we don't currently employ anyone who has any experience in those technologies. However, I absolutely agree and I believe we could look at this in 1-2 years after the prototype of the application is completed.
Coworker: I'm more optimistic than you.
Actual conversation. Coworker made an animation once in college, which is the entire basis of their argument.2 -
Project management 101:
1) For a new project, pretend it is similar to a project in currently in development
2) Proudly state that everything can be copied from the older project, so the schedule of the new can be tightened
3) Calculate the new schedule based on the "just copy and paste" effort.
4) Now the new project will be finished before the older project
5) Enjoy the applause from upper management for the successful project that hasn't even begun yet.
No, this does not belong in the joke category.
That's gonna be fun...1 -
you know, i've got 5K+ in cash savings before i would even need to dip into "long term" retirement funds
and other than the food and the drink, i don't spend anything (can scrape by on 1-2K per month)
so fuck it, i'm going to enjoy the amazing weather that is everywhere in europe right now
if companies are going to be assholes, i am too
because in the long run i know my skills and vast competances are valuable
companies can hire the cheap clueless scrub in the shortrun
but i know i'll win in the long run when they realize who they are trying to hire does not exist
what's even one year of being unemployed against a lifetime of opportunity and projects? nothing.13 -
I started working as back end dev and I was given a pc sadly with no admin rights (which I neede oc) so I happily requested them to IT services. After 3 weeks of waiting got a msg telling me that the script for giving me admin rights was not working so they had to send the request to the next lvl and bla bla bla.
So... I called them. A really nice guy just connected to my pc, used an admin resque account and added my user as admin (2 mins) et voilà. 1 month of waiting for a 2 mins shet. Hate big companies...4 -
1. Keep my job
2. Keep my side job
3. Revive blogging at least 1 post a month
4. Keep focus on what’s important and what are priorities
5. Finish my notes / diary application cause my text files / html pages are now taking up to much space and using cat/grep to search trough them is painful ( it can also help with point 3 )
6. Maybe just maybe start writing prototype of table top rpg game scenario, I have a concept in my mind for a long time but it’s also connected to point 5 and 7 and 8
7. Spend twice more time to practice drawing than in this year
8. Read / listen to more than 1 book a month
I think that’s it from dev stuff1 -
Editors ask me to build a web application for students that consisted of 21 separate pages, 55 images, and 29 interactives. They want this in 1 month. I'm the only designer and developer.5

I'm a workaholic.
My boss literally told me I've only used 1 PTO day this year and with only 2 weeks left I HAVE to take at least the rest of this week off.
Guess... I'm getting a really long weekend, took tomorrow thru Friday off, Monday and Tuesday are holiday, so only 3 days left of the year after 5 today.
Not taking the last 3 days next week because I don't trust my one co-worker to do end of month/year procedures without me there to verify they didn't fuck up anything.
Now I just have to get through that time stressing about things I'm responsible for breaking while I'm not there.5 -
This happened 2 years ago. With 1 year c++ application development experience in a big firm, the new company hired me as "intern". That moment I was like ok ok whatever then the nightmare began. They forced me to code on windows xp with visual studio200x with an old ass c++ (much older than my previous work, there's no string data type) and it has to work on IE. I told my supervisor that this code is obsolete and I need a new windows, IDE, and newer c++ to work on. He said he will get it done. 1 month passed I still sat my ass on the same chair with an old ass pc in front of me. Best thing I could do was designing a new web ui yet they still force me to work on their unfinished obsoleted codes. Well u know what? I quit 😒3

TL;DR: Forwards and backwards buttons on mouse broke. Me sad!
grrr, bought a corsair dark core mouse (on sale) to use with my laptop (in school) because I got really sick my other mouse being wired. It has worked really well up until like a month ago where the fucking forwards and backwards buttons magically stopped working and will instead just type the numbers 1 and 2. This also happens only in Linux because iQueue, their driver software, is windows only.
It works fine otherwise, but goooood is it hard to live without the forwards and backwards buttons :<1 -
Today I have fixed an issue in 300k usd servers that have been sitting there for almost 6 months... Even the vendor (which is a major company) did not wanna touch them. Nobody knows about it yet but I'm proud of myself but at the same time I feel a big resentment because despite my hard work I will not get to spend the next holiday which is a month from now with my family because all coworker went behind my back to the manager and took a vacation and manager will not even allow a work from home day... 1 single day. That's the only working day that week. But without it I can't go back home because home is 20 hours away... More if I take a connecting flight5

All of the basic features of the rewrite have been successfully implemented! Ranting, commenting and even different types of posts have been implemented.
In 1 fucking month. Fuck, if that’s not impressive I don’t know what would be honestly.
Now - time for notifications.2 -
Before I joined the project I was told I had to EOY to hit deadline. After I joined for 1 month was told I have to hit the deadline in a month and that I’m too slow.2

It seems Lightroom is not WYSIWYG....
Spent a month touching up photos manually from DNG and now finally Exported them to JPG... most look really bad even though they look really nice in LR...
Just reset all of the adjustments and told LR to auto edit all of them... they look a lot nicer after exporting....
So it seems the correct process is now:
1. Auto correct (but leave white balancing)
2. Export
3. Manually fix the ones I don't like14 -
Learning information security yet again after doing multiple information security things for company and manager is pushing to do it saying "due immediately" and they're after sending "a number of emails" (it's due in a month and they sent 1 email).
Annoying that these things must be done again and again just because someone in sales let something slip or left their journal behind like a dumb dumb. It's not like I'm never off-site with my stuff or I interact with customer(s) yet1 -
Last month, I learnt Docker via the 1 hour crash course of the YouTube video.
Now, I don't remember all the content of that video which made me think that I should start making notes.
I understand the basic fundamentals of the Contanarization and a couple of commands.
But I still feel like I'm lacking the whole picture of the docker.
I wonder what other devs do to learn new tech and also about note taking habit for revisions.6 -

funny that ever since i started working out regularly, my craving for cheese has shot up. i usually have cheat meals every weekend, but my favourite ( and most harmful) cheat food is a Domino's pizza with a cheese burst base. i try to have that atmost 1 a month but damn... that burst of cheese in mouth gives me an orgasm session of 30 minutes.
today i had it and now am missing the workout lol4 -
- Started learning python
- New semester's about to start in college
...and laptop got recked.
Shows the post screen and crashes and reboots repeatedly. Tried to fix it and now the display doesn't light up and the Hard-Disk makes screeching noise. I didn't even touch the display. HDD maybe.
Removed the HDD and tried to recover it from my friends PC, but it turns out it was already dead. All my data from 1 month ago is gone (thank god for external HDD) and I cannot learn python anymore cause I don't have any backup computer.
I don't even know if I can afford to get it repaired if they say they have to replace the entire motherboard in the laptop.

Developer: o...kay... such as?
Client: how about a 360 environment and mobile can make use of the gyroscope?

Client: IE 9
Developer: .... ok we may need a fallback for non-supported. May I know how about the timeline?

In my project to process CSV file it needs to be transformed into XML file. Basically 100 MB CSV is turned into 3GB XML. They can be deleted afterward but it is not implemented and no one cares. Our storage gains around 1-2 TB data each month. Right now we have ~200 TB of XML in our s3
I think I can add Big Data to my CV *sarcasm*5 -
Got designs on Wednesday afternoon. Final changes on Thursday and they expected me to work all weekend because they were lats for designs I asked 1 month ago for QA and testing. Not my fucking problem.
And not working on a weekend.
And today got told that components were missing and they needed animations. No fucking duh7 -
Here, code reviews are not happening 🙁☹️
When the actual error comes to the prod, we dig into the logs and figure out the reason.
The project is not stable and in the development phase, so requirements are coming too much every month with deadlines.
Deadlines are mostly 1 to 2 weeks.
Sr. Devs mostly merge PR without reviewing it.
I had lots of opportunities though due to various requirements like I learnt AWS dynamo DB, S3, and a few things regarding EC2.
But the coding standard which needs to be learned that I think I'm lacking because my code is not getting reviewed.
Not only about coding, we have to create a ticket in Jira for our task which is decided in the scrum and needs to assigned to ourselves.
In the name of scrum, there are 1 to 2 hours of meeting where they started brainstorming about new requirements and how we are going to implement them.
What should I do to make my code more cleaner and professional?1 -
Why the FUCK SCALEWAY DOESN'T DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT!
Arrgh. I just want it to be deleted. I clicked delete almost 3 months now. I used their service for 2 months, charged for 4.
Ok, there is the story.
> Be me
> Be broke
> Buy their 3 Euro package
> Use it for 1 month, you know, install npm, vpn and stuff
> Be broke
> You have 0 euros in your account
> Cannot log in to server couse you didn't paid their bill
> Sure, they have right to do that
> Forget about it
> Earn money
> 3 months later, remember it
> Ok, I want to delete it, couse i don't use it anymore
> Remember you used more than 1 month, so pay your debt
> There is 3 issued bills
> Try to delete account
> Wait 1 month
> They didn't deleted your account
> Fuck it, there is the money you want
> Pay all the bills, hope it ends
> Wait 1 week
> Nope
> Open a ticket
> Says it will be deleted in few weeks.
> Wait 1 month
> DIDN'T FUCKING DELETED
WHY CAN'T THEY DELETE THAT SHIT FOR FUCKS SAKE. WHAT CAN I DO FOR MAKE THEM DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT?

Update to my laptop rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1822853/...
I finally got my gaming laptop back, with its motherboard changed under warranty, which was nice. Now all I gotta wait for is 1 month worth of Windows updates. Fun! -
I just had the idea for a social network which would care about privacy, don't sell the data of its users and stuff. This would mean the users had to pay for it to keep the lights on, like 1 oder 2 bucks a month.
Do you think this could work? I'm not sure, I think there might already be too much competition in that field.9 -

Yesterday, the Project Manager forwarded an email from a staff member who worked on a donations campaign. Staff member was confused about a Cloudflare challenge that appeared before the user was sent to the donation page. It’s a less than 5 second JavaScript check. He thought it looked fishy.
I had to explain that it’s a security measure that’s been up for almost a month. PM knows this but left it to me to explain because ownership of the site is on me. The donations page and api gets hit by a lot of bots because it’s a public api and there are no security measures like captchas to deter the bots. I’m inheriting this website and I didn’t build it.
Staff member says other staff want to know if the Cloudflare page can be customized so it looks more legit. Um, Cloudflare is a widely known legit service. Google it.
A few thoughts pop into my head:
1. Engineering communicated to stakeholders about the Cloudflare messaging a month ago.
2. Wow, stakeholders don’t share relevant info with their staff who aren’t on these emails.
3. Woooow, stakeholders and staff don’t look at the website that often.2 -

Still haven't got a schedule for my master thesis defense after 2 months. The normal deadline is 1 month.
My professor is ignoring my follow up emails, even after the head of the program urging him to finish the review.
I feel discriminated as this didn't happen to other students that worked under him before.
I am job searching now, what if a job offer came but I still couldn't get a graduation certificate because of my delayed defense.
Will the university willing to compensate for the time loss not being able to work?
Maybe I should start finding out how to hire a lawyer in case I have to sue the uni.

Worst: job insecurity, i. e. "due to Covid, unfortunately we can only renew you for 1 month for now" which kept on going from March till October and during which all sensible colleagues left.
Best: finally leaving this piece of shit management in October for a better position.1 -
Developer in anger : I'm gonna leave this team and the manager/team will suffer for my loss and the project will fail.
In the meanwhile,
Manager to the senior manager : If one of the developers die or leaves the team, the project deadline extends by 1 month.
Senior manager : Great. -
I haven't had an actual burnout ever since I started programming 6 years ago, maybe duo to the fact that I don't accept more than 2 projects at the same time, and I request a minimum deadline of 1 month for any project.
that said, I had to offer the clients something in compensation, basically lower prices and higher quality applications.
so i guess the more you give the more you earn? -

So my office tends to have seating rearrangements every few months due to the amount of people increasing in the company. In the 1 year that we moved to this office, I have been lucky to not have moved seats drastically.
Today though my team got moved to a new area. The previous area was already pretty small, the new area is even smaller where dual monitors JUST fit on the desk. With more people being hired by the month, there's going to be no more room again. I really wish the company would look at just hiring actual talented staff rather than hiring just to meet demands. Again, it's all about quality, not quantity!! -
Someone raised a PR for the opensource project "fast XML parser". Since this was a major change, it was difficult to review. I asked for the purpose and requested to break it into multiple PRs, where 1 PR should have related changes only. And any good change but unnecessary change can be avoided to scheduled for later.
We had long arguments for a month or two.
I don't know why but instead of breaking the PR, the contributor keep updating his PR for every commit someone made on the original repo.
He also stopped contributing for other changes, and commenting on other issues. (Change in the behavior)
Finally after 5-6 months, I had to close the PR as it was not active, having conflicts and not as per guidelines. -

FUCK. So the bog boys get all in a panic about one of our best devs leaving.
They respond to this with 2 things, that I am aware of, 1 is to setup meeting with all the devs to see if they are happy, the other was this message sent to me from our CEO.
"Heya..We've decided to give you a one time thank you bonus.. will be paid at month end .. thank you for everything regards".
Today I find out what that "bonus" was, a nice 8% of my salary. Like HTF is that a "bonus".7 -
Don‘t we adore it when month in advance requested vacation does not get confirmed and 3 days before the due boss comes in: „you need to finish your tasks, fulfill yet 5 hereby new assigned tasks but all 1 day in advance because if client comes back with questions. Tldr: intern here, I like staying in my workplace for longer than my work hours. Is it going to cause me trouble if i become a permanent employee?
Long story: So as per my previous rants i joined a startup as an android intern, company is of around 80-90 employees with many teams and standard/sad rules like 9 hr shift, 1 paid leave per month etc.
I was worried of these rules due to being a regular clg student and living very far from office, so i complained and got a little compensations like 7 hr work shift, few half days and work from home days, etc
Now the thing is : i actually have kind of started to like this work. Its been a month and i took around 12 days leave last month for papers, but marked some of them as wfh and half days, so deductions were not what i expected (although payslip is yet to come, which would have given a better explaination). But overall Pay is decent, work environment is chill ( people work in teams here, but since am the only android dev, i got no timelines, or tech leads. Just the ceo, whom i send a daily progress message), there are good refreshments available and after papers, i am pretty much free.
So I like staying here for longer hours like 8, or 8.30 hours. My family is also working, so they are usually not much worried, tho my mom starts sending messages when i leave after 7. But this friend of mine, keeps saying "its wrong, your managers are gonna call you weak and would force you to work for more hours when they notice you can come for 9 hours , etc"
So am i doing the wrong thing here?3 -

So I resigned from work 6 months ago and they counter offered with a sweet pay deal as they were totally fubar without me
That 6 month deal expired today and they are totally surprised that Im not going back to full time (so I can work on my start-up side project)
I've offered to go back part time on a more reasonable salary and they are totally pissed. Surely the writing was on the wall!!
Here is an idea. When your bus factor is 1... Hire some other people! -
Today at work I started doing 1 month old task with production problem.
First of all why now ?
Because I already fixed all the other urgent production problems I had during last month, done about 4 deployments of those super urgent errors.
Now I can start with not trivial one that are pending for quite time.
I am the only backend developer in this project ...
This is a dtp application and the problem is that we are not verifying if we got all fonts embedded in customer provided pdf files.
We are generating high quality images of those pdf for printing just fine from the beginning but now we need valid PDF with all fonts embedded in it. ( don’t ask me why I am only a hammer in this process )
After running simple test using python script against database it turned out we have over 500 broken PDF files without fonts.
So I guess I have just one sentence to say about it.
Fuck you PDF format for not being strict and allowing this shit. -

Sooo I think my VPS slowly dying. Disk r/w performance has gone to shit - we're talking ~10MB/s write speed on a fucking SSD.
Is there any way to bring it back to life? Or should I just give up?
Note: I've been keeping this VPS alive for years because it only costs me 1 eur/month, and they don't have this offer anymore - it costs triple now, so I reeeeally don't want to lose that price.
Also, I'm using it as a DNS server (among other things), and I really like the IP address, so I don't really wanna lose that either...

"curious about programming?
You’ve read all of your member-only stories this month. Become a member to read and support the writers and publications uncovering new insights in the topics that matter to you."
Fair enough, good work should be paid.
But do "the writers" actually get paid by medium?
From my knowledge and experience so far, I had reasons to doubt, at least they never paid me (but then again I only wrote 1 serious story there).
Also I still do not get it why some stories are free and others aren't. Personally, I prefer dev.to for reading as well as writing. But medium stories rank so successfully on Google that there are always some of them before any dev.to content in the search results.4 -
I've started my business in amazon with dropshipping. And I'm using the dropshipping tool extension which simply makes .csv file with computed prices and things from the product search I've made in amazon. But still I have to check all the products one by one and delete the ones which are not eligible for selling. And it takes like 1 hours for 100-150 products and after that I only have 3 or 4 products left.
So I've made a program to automate this by taking the csv file and checking the products itself and deleting not eligible products . And now I'm thinking of selling it. Is it better to sell it with monthly plan like $4/month or to sell it for $50?2 -
Some updates:
> Going to get another paper published (hopefully) once my exams end
> Got a intern, not a lot of money, ₹2L≈$2.6k per month for 2.5 months
> Will get a Mac from company for the intern(probably not new, and most likely will be taken back soon after the internship)
> Planning on entrepreneurship after getting a degree
Ohh and the rant:
1. Fucking sent me a 2 page list of links as "pre reads for internship" during my exams -- and intern will start soon after exams
2. Have missed 3 paper submission deadlines till now, hopefully will run more experiments on time this time and finally get that paper submitted (on 15th May) -

honest question: if I know ReactJS, Golang, Python, Typescript, and a bit of Postgres and living in Costa Rica, what sort of freelance services could I promote on the net?

any recommendations?2 -

Well, yes. My boss accepted my 'test' project to be build for production use, stack is Laravel, Vue, a little Python.

You agree I will finish the first phase in time? (24-2) Keep in mind I still have other projects I'm working on.9 -
Okay, going to throw my shame away here.
My chances are slim, but if anyone happen to work in a company that might have a use for a remote intern with skills in Python/Flask, JavaScript, Java or PHP living in GMT+1
I will go for fulltime too but I know chances for that are even slimmer. At this point, I will kill for a $500/month intern opportunity for perspective.

This is the single most important question of the year:
Where is a good Minecraft server service that can run FTB Modpacks?
My options are:
1 - A dedicated linux box with Minecraft management software with a port open to the world.
2 - Purchase a vps or something similar to host MC.
I have done 1, and it worked pretty well. It ran on a tiny A8 processor with 8GB ram and an SSD. I see services and they cost like 15 to 20 a month and seem like they are awfully stingy on storage. I can get an enterprise server for 30 a month, but I just asked (my webhost, who I really like) and they said they cannot run Minecraft servers. They said I would need a vps, and they don't have them yet. So I could dig around for a vps service and that is an option. I am really wary of "minecraft" branded services as many are outright ripoffs.
Thoughts? Successes? Just do it myself?5 -
How is it possible that nextjs developers could build a much more sophisticated web platforms than i do, much faster much more rapidly and easily and ship it to production for almost no costs, not even using any devops pipeline, unit or untegration testing, while i do all of that + devops and it costs me to pay for servers on aws?????
Literally what a nextjs developer can build in 1 month it would take me at least 3-4 months11 -

I want to go to gym but im too broke
Gyms in my country are expensive as fuck. German gym Synergy (im not from germany) costs $27 not per month but per 7 trainings within 1 month. That means if i go every day monday through sunday i have wasted my ticket and have to pay another $27. And thats just the minimum package level, there are other more expensive packages out there that include sauna and various other shits. Other gyms are just as expensive, more or less
On top of that I'd have to pay the private gym coach several hundreds of euros (depending on gym coach) ranging from 100-500 or more euros per month. I live in a country where engineer's minimum salary is 500 euros per month
Not to mention the special expensive food I'd have to eat to follow the training diet which will cost additional several hundred euros more??
double costs = gym + coach + food;
It saddens me to throw away so much money on a liability like this. I'd rather throw that money into some crypto asset thats gonna yield me more money
How the fuck do people afford gym? I want to go to the gym but im too broke for this... Like how perfect and complete life do some people already live in order to be able to afford gym membership so easily?
I cant believe im working such a difficult software java backend job and cant afford a goddamn gym membership
Edit: I just wanted some minimal workouts to maintain my physical health, not some intensive sports workout. Just enough so i look good physically but not too much difficult or heavy weight workouts because i dont care about bodybuilding etc thats not my primary job. So therefore if im asking for bare minimum shouldn't there be some ultra cheap option for me?7 -

So I am working in this startup at Stockholm for 6 months and 1 week ago decided to leave.
I am still under probation period(5 days left until probation period is over), so I should have actually given 1 months notice. However we had many meetings about this and we decided that I will give 2 months notice.
Like we decided, previous week I gave founders a notice of 2 months and they agreed to it. I sent them e-mail and they confirmed it so I have proof.
This week all of a sudden they are saying that their plans have changed and there won't be much work to do for me so they are are forcing me to leave after 3-4 weeks.
I understand their point of view. Since my salary is 41k, they are spending totally 53k sek on me monthly. So their idea is to save extra 53k sek by forcing me to leave 1 month earlier. Also I've heard that they plan to hire another person 2-3 months later after I leave, so essentially they will save 150-200k sek and that's fine, I get it, it's business as usual right?
What I don't understand is how can they be so inhumane?
We agreed that notice is 2 months. I informed all my relatives (since I will be leaving Sweden). I gave notice to my landlord (deposit is 10k sek) and etc. I wanted to have 8 more weeks to plan what I'm going to do when I leave.
When asked wether I can leave by the end of this month I didn't know what to answer. I said that I will need to think about it and now I'm "thinking" about it. First of all I mentioned to them that I am risking to loose my deposit. Instead of offering any compensation, they keep asking me how they can help me to leave as soon as I can?
Situation is really messed up.
Since according to the contract I am still under probation(even though I started working earlier than stated in contract, so technically I shouldn't be under probation) I have no idea what they can do if I don't agree to their terms.
As far as I know they are obligated to give me 1 months notice if they are firing me while I'm under probation, so it doesn't seem that I would have much power in this situation.
If I would try to force them to keep me around for total 8 weeks, they can just officially fire me while I'm under probation and I will have to leave in 4 weeks. However after one week I will become a permanent employee and then they will have to give me 2 months notice if they want to fire me. So it seems that they are trying to save their face by trying to force me to leave earlier on my own will.
My current plan is to agree with them and actually leave at the end of this month. But with conditions.
First I need to get in touch with my landlord, explain the situation and hope that he would give back my deposit even if I'm leaving 1 month earlier than I've told him before.
Also, since these guys decided to mess up my plans by trying to save some money, I think I should demand for some compensation? Like 10-15k? I had plans goddamit and we agreed that notice will be 2 months via e-mail after all.3 -

Bout a month back went for an interview, went well, assessment and all that, but the company was busy moving so feedback was slow.
Last week got contacted by a client of a former company who is now also looking for a dev.
Company 1 just came back wanting to discuss offer, and company 2 will probably get back to me tomorrow.
Question is, there like any reason to disclose the info to them. The second guy I know, he was client for about a year.1 -
Microsoft Foundation Classes - MFC. Spent 1 month to make a fixed column on a grid. Counter intuitive APIs.

Not really a Rant but:
My Productivity Method:
1. Nootropics (Nootrobox Daily, Sprint for 6+ hour work/focus periods)
2. Ketogenic Diet (Ridiculous Energy, Amazing Food Choices, No Crashing, No Cheating!)
3. Moderate Exercise
4. Get Lit (Partying) once a month at least, hard liquors.
5. Nicotine (Vaping 6mg) while coding.
6. Caffeine (Bulletproof Coffee)
7. League of Legends breaks.
8. Weekly Cigar Social with other professionals.
Balance Vice with Virtue is a great combination for getting stuff done.

Any remote dev out there? What's your experience being remote been like? What advise would you give someone starting a remote position?1

How in heart is possible to work with a router that randomly shutdowns itself around 3/4 times a day without any reason. Leaving me without internet for 10-15 minutes. I called my ISP and they said that they don't see any problem and they will not send any replacement. I can instead fix an appointment with their technician to have a look at the issue, but of couse, I'm paying for him.
How about no? I'm going to buy a proper modem/router next month, this shit router they give you have 1/100 of the proper configurations options you need.2 -
Do you do overtime? How much? Do you think it "works"? I had 1 month of overtime a while ago, and I only noticed a stressed team for a tiny gain in speed. I know that if it went on for even longer I would've quit.4

How much do you earn if you work professionally. Include experience and position.

Hi guys !
I start "studies" to become Web Developer and after 1 month and a half of studies, my teacher asks us to create our first project in groups of 3 or 4. Do you have any ideas of what kind of project we could build? I was thinking of an e-commerce site with our knowledge (HTML5, CS3, a bit of JavaScript, SQL, a little PHP ($ _SESSION, $ _POST and $ _GET) and CRUD).
Is it a good idea?9 -
1. Be lost in thought less.
2. Listen to people more attentively.
3. Read 3 computer science books.
Note: Last year my resolution was to read 3 computer science books and I'm proud to say that I read 2.5 computer science books. Didn't fully reach it but 2 and a half books in a year is damn better than 0. They were: "Clean Code", "The Mythical Man-Month", and half of "Algorithms 4th Edition". -
Started learning salesforce 1 month back. Felt somewhat manageable.
Got the repository on Monday. Its a fucking spaghetti. A billion different conventions all around the place, no comments anywhere (except for 1% maybe 5 of the places where it needs to be), and for some reason the Checkpoint sync wont work with this project (although it works if I use a scratch or or trailhead playgrounds).
I am starting to think about unlearning this and try some new department of the company. Problem is, the employer is great at Salesforce himself, and he has high hopes from me.7 -
I wasted 470 rupees ($5.6 USD) recharging on the wrong WiFi account, today.
😭 How's your Friday going? 😭
(I did ask Customer support if it can be refunded but they said No, it's not in the policy to refund these transactions).
It's a good thing I always chose 1 month recharge over 3, 6 or 12 months recharge, otherwise I'd have killed myself today.7 -
random thought:
Life= tension. But you are only winning it if you don't let these tensions divert you from "what you gotta do"
Life will always find a way to give you some kind of problem. if you are not tensed about something, you ain't living a life.
But we often start ignoring our favourite habits/ aspirations/ goals in order to tackle these problems .
For eg I had made a habit of meditating for 15 mins followed by 45 mins of workout b/w 7-8pm last year. but since January 12th there hasn't been a day when i could achieve this habit simply because life kept throwing random tensions at me.
1. first my hand got fractured and i had to leave gym for a month. "no worries", i thought. "meditation doesn't require a working hand and i could do start walking as an excercise from next month"
2. then my office got wfo 3/5 days. i will get back to home after 7.30 and on wfh days my work won't finish till 8 on home days. "no worries" , i thought
"i will shift it to 9-10 every night next month"
3. then next month office got wfo 4/5 days annd family started steps for buying a new home. all time affter pfffice went into those steps/discussions "no worries ", i thought. "it wiill be over by the next month and i will be free"
this next month hasn't fome yet :/3 -
We go to see a customer for a small project, probably 1/2 month dev and few thousand $, basically a small member page for a small local club.
"We want something exactly like this" he says. He opens the browser, logs in Linkedin, I wait.
"Something like this" he repeats.
I finally understand.
Well - I say- Login page and profile picture upload, yes we can do it...2 -
I got deployed to a client who uses Java. I have no knowledge in Java. Can I learn it in only half a month? Also including spring boot to create web services. The project will start soon.
They say the number 1 skill of a developer is the ability to learn fast. I'm a PHP JS guy by the way.8 -
1. New Job/ New project
2. Learns new language/framework
3. Works for a month or so
4. Priorities change
5. endlessly loop from 1 to 4
What do you mean one-page-resume?1 -
We've been working full time on a certain application with 1-3 developers (depending on the month)... After 4 years, we are proudly to announce that we have 150 users
What a mess2 -
So trunk-based is the new approach everyone is using, because it is so cool.
I used gitflow for the last projects with azure devops, set up the pipelines like tipically in 1 week if I had other things to do with the help of the portal clicking through things. PR-s triggered pipelines, everything worked cool.
But then trunk-based got momentum, so I worked with this client where 2 developers worked for !!!3 months!!! to setup trunk-based pipeline. It was not my money, so I did not say a thing. They were using infrastructure as code.
I am all in for automation, but seriously? Then again, another project where a DevOps team took 1 dev-month to setup the pipeline + meetings. And what do you get in the end? So that the same image goes on all environments? Like how many releases do you have for prod in a year. Lets say 24. 24 x 5 minutes of manual work for the release, that is 2 hours. So my question is why would you spend 2 hours of manual work while you can automate it merely in a month? Everyone loves to code, but using the ui on the DevOps portal saves you so much time. I don't get this. Maybe I am getting old :D4 -
I'm going insane.
So let's say you have an object in database, with 20-30 related objects (Or lists of objects) (All related objects have a foregn key to the "main" object).
Now, as long as you just edit/create thinga everything is fine.
But the deletion... Oh MY GOD
"Just put on delete cascade", right ? RIGHT ?
WRONG ! presence of some objects should block delete, while others can be deleted and some are "situational" depending on the first object state.
So delete operation with all the checks takes .... 1 - 2 seconds.
Seems fine ? WRONG ! When you have 40 or more objects to delete, even 1 second is too long.
Should I say "fuck it" and just write a stored proc which will crash if object cannot be deleted for any reason ? because with Entity Framework, I don't see how I can do it effitenly.
But I HATE stored proc, after couple of month/years noone remembers how they work...
RHAAAAA.
Ok I feel better.8 -
When your marketing department moves so slow you now only have 1 month before Q&A for a massive website release and I’m still only 44% done....

I need your help. I'm currently deciding on setting up a proper multi-monitor set up (inspired by the ones you guys have) at home so I can be better productive since my current "desk" at home is actually my bed (I have a dual monitor set-up at work). I have decided on two monitor choices.
My current budget is around LKR 25,000 (USD 155) per month without it eating into my living expenses (welp, i'm poor 😢).
Do you think I should go for:
2x Dell P2214H 22" monitors in 1 month - LKR 23,600 (USD 146) (per month for one month)
https://dell.com/en-us/work/...
or ..
2x ASUS VZ249H Frameless 23.8" monitors in 2 months - LKR 25,000 (USD 155) (per month for two months)
https://asus.com/lk/Monitors/...
I would really really appreciate your opinions on this.5 -
So i have to make a project in coming 1 month, any crazy/stupid/random/weird ideas and yeah i have to show it to teachers so SFW only pls lol.9

could anyone help me calculating costs for AWS and Google Colab Services? I find it quite intransparent...
i would like to host 1x Python App which runs once a day or week (API call, enrichment uf JSON, JSON 2 CSV, FTP transfer). runtime is probably a few seconds, something between 1 and 5.
in AWS i created a Lambda function and for scheduling i guess i need CloudWatch. what really grind my gears is the combination of free contingent and paied service - i really don't have an overview right now, so my question here: how could i calculate it and what would be the monthly/yearly costs?
in Google Colab created a notebook and for scheduling i would need Google Cloud Scheduler. as far as i understand the hosting of the notebook is for free and the costs of cloud scheduler is $0.10 per job per project per month. 3 are for free. so 1 project, 1 job = scheduler for free?
Also, i'm open for other services such as digital ocean droplets or similar.
thx in advance for your help!8 -
I'll about to join one of MNC in next month(at this moment I work in Startup company). But I'm little bit nervous. Technology for which I got selected, I worked 1 year ago. I selected for senior post and don't know what my responsibilities will be. I'm going through Imposter Syndrome. For overcoming that stress and nervousness I'm working on my weak areas. But as my notice period is going on, my boss is giving me more and more work and I'm not getting enough time on focusing on my weak areas. As date is coming close and that stress is increasing day by day. What can I do and how can I handle myself?3

I graduated from a non elite institute, from non CS branch. I was working in a not so know startup. It was so difficult to get referrals at big orgs like Amazon, Flipkart...
Now that I'm already in Flipkart, atleast 1 recruiter contacts me each day with openings in the best companies in India... Seriously wth, I made a switch a month ago!1 -
My friend told me this :
"To make my app running as free i decided to implement Donation. User base of the application is above lacs, So i thought it will be not a big deal. $1 was the amount.
After a month when i was checking store review one comment was this.. "Begger App. Update every day." Star was 3 to my surprise.
And now i am seriously thinking to withdraw my app from store."
Should he??2 -
When you describe to the business owner as a dev that this is a bad idea but they want it anyways so you just go on and dev it. Then 1 month into dev hell thinking about hanging your self for poor choices they go “This future is too difficult for the customer to understand and its not going to work”. Do you say i told you so or do you hang him with a mouse cable?1
