When someone beats the level of stupidity you thought was possible.
No, when you request a Let's Encrypt certificate, you DON'T fill in YOUR OWN NAME in the "Common Name" field 🤦
Also, it explains right next to the fucking field that non-experienced users SHOULDN'T ALTER THE FUCKING VALUE.

Last night I had a dream about a bug and I woke up with a solution. When I got to the office and tried it out it worked...I have heard about this happening before but this is the first time I have experienced it!11
-
A more experienced friend told me
"don't be a pussy, test in production"
I'm the one fixing the bugs, not him8 -
Manager: "yeah so thanks for understanding we can't give you a payrise, by the way we need you to train the new guy we just hired who is your senior because even though he is more experienced than you as a c# dev he doesn't understand what an object is"

Today I learnt from a more experienced Dev that using git as versioning system makes the code open source.18

Being told I’m not experienced enough to get a senior dev job I interviewed for.
Even though I aced the first 4 interview rounds, the tech test feedback was “the best solution they had ever seen”, and I’ve been a senior dev for 25 years.
Time wasting assholes.3 -
One thing that I really hate is experienced programmers who don't threat newbies with kindness and act like "masters of everything"... Don't do that. :/12
-
Was browsing job sites and noticed an 'experienced sysadmin' job (Linux).
Everything seemed pretty interesting and then I saw this line (at what they offer):
Free own domain with hosting!
That's genuinely cute offering that to an experienced Linux sysadmin. Not saying every sysadmin has this but I for example have like 10 domain names and a bunch of servers.
Yeah that looked cute 😆27 -
Have you experienced solving a programming problem for hours, and when you finally got it, you just stare at your monitor and admire your code?
You just sit there smiling and thinking to yourself, finally you did something right. ehehehehehe
Happy Sunday buddies!3 -
Job application asked if I have experience with difficult customers and needing to repeat concepts in different ways.
How many people in the vast field of computers and technology HAVEN'T experienced this?4 -
I like when a recruiter calls, decides you're not experienced enough for the role they called for, and immediately ask if you know someone who is. Sure, bro, let me help do your job for you.4

I have been in this field almost 13 years and experienced multiple burnouts. But now feels different.
I miss those days when i spent all nights doing programming on junior high school.
Once you turn your hobby into a profession, it may ceases to be your hobby anymore.13 -
I just flashed BIOS on my server. I don't own a UPS, and i was only using 1 of the 2 PSU's since i couldn't find a second power cord.
Without a doubt the scariest 30 seconds I've ever experienced while working with IT1 -
If recruiter contacted you, and when discussing salary, they asked “Why do you think you worth that much?”. What would be the best answer? Does answering with “Oh because I worth that much, as I’ve experienced in using this and that” sounds arrogant?26
-
How many guys have experienced this?
Heard this from a supposed Linux user
Other dev: I have been using Linux for 3 years I'm really good at it.
Then sees me use "cd" and "mv" commands
Other dev: wow that's some complex stuff
Me: 😂😂😂

Just experienced a mental breakdown from studying for college exams. Today june 1 2021 i dropped out of college because nothing and nobody is worth more than my mental state6

Have you ever been forced to work with a younger and far less experienced colleague and in turn for being nice to him been lectured about basic stuff which he thinks he knows better (but he doesnt)? Gosh, I haven't been this angry in years...7

OMFG I think I've just experienced my first shock for 10 seconds after watching my boss looking for a tab on chrome that had Google opened so he could paste the searching string.

Job title: "Junior Application Developer"
Rest of job description: "4 years experience...Career level: Experienced hire/Professional"
Meaning: "Looking for a senior level programmer willing to work for a junior salary."
I hate job hunting.2 -
Hello, I'm new here and I was wondering if there were other students on here. I'm fine with talking to anyone but I can't help but feel too intimidated to talk to experienced professionals.37

New job on the horizon after being unemployed for a couple of months. Moving away from full-stack a bit to focus in on front-end stuff. Cool. Cool, cool, cool. Expect rage-filled rants in the near future 👌
Taking some time off was beneficial in all kinds of ways: got out of long term toxic relationship, got in betterer shape, learned stuff I'm actually interested in, mental health improved massively along with self-esteem, and I reconnected with friends and family. I'm actually enjoying life again. Don't get me wrong though, I had to claw my way out of a pretty dark hole... But I'm starting to think I fucking made it. This is a new start and I'm excited.
Fuck being in a toxic relationship.
Fuck working a job that is killing you.
If you're reading this and feel stuck: you deserve better. Listen to your gut, only you know what kind of life is good for you. It doesn't matter if it's a good job by every possible standard if it's making you miserable! A relationship exists to help you grow, to give you energy, to cultivate love. Sure, you'll go through bad times but if it's pathologically bad it won't get better on it's own. Trust me, I waited years for things to get better.
Anyways, good luck with whatever is challenging you right now, big or small. 😘6 -
Does any1 had experienced this........ Once u have fixed ur mum's Computer and all its future problems is coz of u 😐😐😐😐😐😐😐13

today I experienced real-time bug fixing and deployment..
The phone was attached to the debugger, the client is using the app, me catching the logs.
Client: oh here is wrong behavior.
Me: *tapping on keyboard, then* ok try now please..
😅2 -
It's funny to see creator of a product not being experienced enough to apply for the job posting related to the same product...😂

Scariest thing I've ever experienced...
Was compiling a mod and left my laptop alone to do it's thing while I went to the bathroom. A couple of minutes later I started to smell something burning.
Rushed back to my laptop and everything was ok.
Turns out with all the coding I forgot about my toasts...1 -
Yesterday I experienced a developer related situation in a completely different scenario. Let me explain:
A friend asked me if he can borrow my angle-grinder. As I was curious, I asked what he needs it for. As he is not that experienced in woodworking he wanted to cut small piece of wood with it. Of course I told him, that this tool is a complete overkill and recommend him to use a small saw.
Now what makes this programmingrelated:
I believe that often unexperienced programmers tend to use to heavy tools for small tasks. His lack of experience let him choose the most powerful tool, but made him blind for analysis of the actual problem.5 -
An intern who tries not to show that he doesn't know shit has been asked for fun:
"What's the difference between a pointer and a thread?"
He answered: "I don't know, I am not experienced enough in oriented object programming".
Seriously. Bullshiting has gone too far.3 -
Anyone else experienced that the not responding apps come back to life when you're about to open Task Manager or you've opened it already? I suspect they get scared of their god.1
-
<rant>
Freelance employers should learn that a "full stack" developer does not equal "fully proficient and experienced in everything code and comp. related". ESPECIALLY if the job pays less than 6£ an hour.

I am on a learning phase. Just wrote my first python script. Please have a look at it on
https://github.com/rabingaire/... . Its a basic stuff for experienced developer but a huge step for me.9 -
When you’re way more experienced and new to a team and are met with “but this is how we’ve done it for ages, and it’s done fine for us” but the sprint performance shows they’ve not completed one in 2 years.5

I'm not a heavy smartphone user, but going from having to keep phone plugged every few hours ( battery was shitting itself in my last phone ) to this is just incredible.
I have never experienced this kind of battery life other than in those old nokia brick phones.10 -
Friends cause more problems than they solve. At least for me.
I'm currently not feeling well at all right now, anxiety and depression. I've never really experienced this before and let me tell you, if you're a person with problems like this regularly, I'm so sorry.7 -
me on my cover letter: i'm an experienced programmer
me irl: knows exactly two languages, has to google how to write basic methods2 -
Guys, would you rather do with good team and be the least experienced or in a small company and be the best programmer there?8

Just finished 2nd year of uni and got a summer placement doing game Dev. I walked in to be the most experienced person there because I am the only one doing it.5

My paid training to become a dev starts today. Or rather in half an hour. God damn it I'm nervous. Even though I'm already kinda experienced. I'll be that company's first trainee.
It will be mostly C#.
I enjoyed my 2 month long holidays that lasted until now, though.3 -
When you start a new project with 2 more developers. You see their CVs and they look experienced.
(Fast forward one month....)
You realize you are the most experienced one and they are waiting for you to guide and mentor them.
The worst of all I thought I was going to learn from them because I still am not ready to mentor other people.
Aaaaaand now I am panicked.
I miss the time where I used to sit in my corner, do the tasks that was given to me and that's all. Now I have to code, build documentation, assign tasks, etc. I am not ready for this. I never asked for this. I just wanted to be a developer. :( :P2 -
We're having build system problems and I'm probably the most experienced when it comes to build systems.
I'm not experienced with build systems.9 -
I am now the only experienced developer and the person responsible for the delivery of a project AFTER WE ARE ONE MONTH PAST THE DEADLINE! All because user wants to replace the old system with new system with all EXACT SAME FUCKING FEATURES!

I hate knowing that there are ton of ways doing something but cant just figure it out which is the best and then having to come back and change it. I know it is part of learning and becoming experienced but still...2

Being bad at something that you want to be good at is the most fucking annoying thing I've ever experienced. Fuck.1
-
Why does every Software Engineering role at the top companies never have PHP or any functional languages in it’s list of languages they want you to be experienced in?
It’s always Java, Python, C#, C/C++, Objective C or Ruby. What about Elixir, Scala, Haskell or Clojure?9 -
All those complaints about having to maintain the shitty code the last developer left behind...
I work on a new project Monday. Modern stack on a platform I have no knowledge about. No one else more experienced to work with. I AM THAT LAST DEVELOPER!!!6 -
People complain about the high RAM usage of IDEs in general, particularly Jetbrain's one.
... They have never experienced Google Chrome ...
Greetings from vacation btw ^^4 -
As a person who is more comfortable and relatively a bit experienced with Java I find Python quite nice, easy to read and less typing.16
-
My current one.
Though it's the best one I've ever experienced too.
It's just that I never worked anywhere else.2 -
Wait this is crazy!
Well I'm not an anxious or depressed type.
But no melatonin pill = no sleep
Worst part is no sleep during the day cause of sun light.
Even taking pills won't guarantee my sleep .
Yes I told my doc and he said "just relax , limit your caffeine "
Have you experienced this?31 -
So I just experienced my first "last minute client change" boy do I understand everyone's frustrations now

I've been wanting to ask this for a while now: How does everyone feel about imposter syndrome? Have you ever experienced these moments of finally getting the hang of something and then suddenly have it all smashed within a second?
How do you deal with it?4 -
As a visual learner, how should I become good at backend development.
I am struggling with this right now. I need to have a diagram in my mind. Bog data is challenging me nowadays a lot.
Any strategies from the experienced devs here?5 -
I actually experienced this today:
"Halp, why is this not working?"
$array = [];
$array->key = 'value';

I've installed Ubuntu a million times before, but never had it hang here for 20 minutes, anyone else ever experienced it? :-/

Today I think I experienced my biggest burnout ever, combined with a huge headache. That is what you get for working at a fast growing startup.
Stay healthy and remember to take it easy guys and girls1 -
Disappointed to be an intern at a place where we were given a website project where I'm the only experienced coder. Not learning anything new and I work all day while my team watches videos.4
-
I just read this great line in the Google SRE book which I have experienced myself:
"Some of the most satisfying coding I’ve ever done was deleting thousands of lines of code at a time when it was no longer useful."3 -
The most annoying thing about having a favourite language and being fast/ experienced in using it is, that you need to bring up a lot of power to leave it behind for something else. :/1
-
Be a MEAN stack developer not just a mean developer.
Unfortunately, I have met few developers who just like to demean other people who know less or are less experienced.8 -
Along with weekly rant topics, devRant should have weekly polls where you create a poll on opinionated questions like "bash or zsh?". Devs would upvote one & post a rant why they prefer one over the other.
With lots of devs here, the opinions of experienced devs would really help young buds. @dfox3 -
Coding has given me a creative outlet. It's filled me with more frustration than anything else I've experienced. It's given me profound joy through successful projects. It's provided me a career which supports my family.
Coding has done a lot for my life... -
Companies try to find young devs, less experienced but more openminded and flexible.. do you think we will still find some cool sobs when we're > 40 || > 50 years old, even if we keep up with new technologies and stuff?
Never thought about it until now..3 -

Just an observation.
According to Stackoverflow's survey, it suggests that developers with more experience are less competitive. I still can't understand this. How can developers loose their interest over time?18 -
Anyone that ever experienced that a personal/hobby project (side to work/school) became successful?
How successful? Did it beco.e your main job?
Was it mostly luck or a lot of hard work?
Curious to hear peoples stories and how common it is.7 -
Experienced programmer:
Code works in head; code almost works in computer; code never works with client.
Beginner programmer:
Code almost works in head; code never works in computer; code will never work with client.
Long story short: it's hard to begin but when you let the code flow, you became a programmer -
Xamarin vs Android Studio?
Pros and Cons?
Plan to get into Android Development in my holidays. I am very experienced with C# decent understanding of Java. Which one should I go for?5 -
Have you ever been hangover at work?
What's the worst hangover you experienced?
I once puked on my keyboard (just a little bit) and spent the next 2 hours cleaning it in total silence while my coworkers couldn't stop laughing and making jokes ;_;3 -
When you know more programming language than your teacher... but not because you're good, just because he sucks!
Reminds me of this question: it only happens once in a while or you had you guys experienced same feelling? How did you do to turn around that in your college?2 -
1) keeping my shit together until my 3 month notice period is done.
2) moving cross country.
3) starting a new job with a new tech stack which I'm not as experienced in. -

Wtf are you taking man?
You’re supposed to be an experienced engineer but what the fuck are you doing leaking null pointer exceptions everywhere you go?
Just 1 more month. Good thing my manager isn’t renewing your contract.

UI design android
Back in college we were taught the principle of KISS (Keeping it simple stupid) and experienced it first hand today.Been struggling with a layout design from our designer and had cursed him a lot earlier.
Turns out I only needed few attributes:
android:clipChidren="false"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal" -
Finally got around to installing Manjaro Linux (XFCE) on my desktop, which is replacing Ubuntu.
I’ve always looked at Manjaro and experimented with it, but I’m more experienced with Linux now, and I am hella enjoying Manjaro. Definitely my fav distro.11 -
How d'yall live without a boss who is an incredibly experienced developer?!
To those who have a corporate dickhead as a boss, you all have my sympathy -
A guy asked on an online channel of programmers about buying a laptop and here's the perfect guide from an experienced programmer.8

Ever had to work with a Web backend, which is written in C++, has 30000 lines of code and is contains php, JQUERY, HTML as well as a desktop UI? I have to do that right now. Now, I am not the most experienced dev with Web stuff but this is fucking ridiculous.2

A question to all experienced developers!
What is that one thing or advice that you would like to give to your past self when you just started programming ?15 -
There's a production site with api call limits. We experienced waaaaay more visitors than usual and I forgot to increase the api call limit, so new users weren't able to do anything. FML again, update emails sent out.2

Starting off with my internship today with a very passionate bunch of people! Relatively new but experienced startup. Wish me luck! 🙂
For a change it's a paid internship
(At most of the companies in India we have unpaid internship :/ )2 -
Is it me or you also feel guilty for handing over the shitty code that does the job and try to make it better before handing over?
-
4 different software areas face issues I am experienced in resolving. I somehow feel like the down time these last few months is about to come to an abrupt end.
Just as soon as they figure out which one gets me, let's hope it isn't all of them at once. -
Used to be a fan of agile and the wisdom of the crowd, but now I’m not so sure. If the team majority aren’t experienced then the experienced people make suggestions are voted down.
I’m fast becoming anti-agile now7 -
As my contractor job ends and my beginning the process of looking for new work the sudden feeling of imposter syndrome starts washing over me.
"I'm not qualified for any of these positions...", I say to myself, but then I think to myself, I wonder how devRanters deal with this.
So let me ask you, devRant, how have you dealt the *Experience Required* section of most jobs when job hunting?3 -
One of my colleagues is ex-military.
As much as I respect these guys for their service, I have never experienced so much stubborn insubordination in my entire career.
Anybody else deal with these types?3 -
Does anyone else think some of the Sonar rules are actually crap?
In particular the Put all you variables above methods one?
I have some static methods and variables and some object ones.
Apart from creating a new class for them which I think is over kill for just a few helper methods, don't you feel you should keep all static stuff separate?
Clean code shouldn't be about following arbitrary debatable rules, it should be preventing the horrible crap that any experienced developer would instantly call shit... If he didn't write it.
And I'm pretty sure I'm experienced so if I'm not calling a price of code shit...I don't see why Sonar should...1 -
I never had to deal with an attack.
At least, I don't know about it. My firewall couldn't detect anything.
I wish I could have experienced something like that tbh *sob*2 -
Developer-in-training at OSU, worried about being able to find a job. Contributing to an open-source project right now to try to hone my skills. Any advice from the more experienced?3
-
We were in math class at computers because we should test our math skills. Had some HTML skills at that point So on the score page changed my score to the best score. The first time I experienced the chrome developer tools.

Have you ever experienced receiving this type of footer in mail?
Img is a sample.
Hate it. Especially first time email contact. It feels like bragging.
"Hey! I'll send it to you via iPhone!"
I know you got an iPhone but if you are an applicant, a proper signature would've been great.2 -
Breakup and all hurts
But have you ever experienced you're working fucking hard on a project in your company for 3 weeks and suddenly they drop the idea for a new feature implementation ?
Trust me it feels so much fucking demotivated .
Idk what to say now8 -
How the heck does nvram magically forget your boot entries while your system is up...
Worst reboot of windows I've experienced in a long time, ugh.
The boot/*.efi files are still present but no entries in the menu... -
Me : I m experienced enough to build apps nicely.
Also me : Spents half an hour to center a button.9 -
Sometimes I think My company thinks like Hadoop ,
Instead of getting a experienced guy like 10 years exp . Let's take 5 with 2 years exp which should be more efficient !! 😒1 -
Do you have ever experienced where:
- You have an idea
- You design it, choose core features that you want for it
- Start the project
- As you work, the project goes messier and messier, and also more complicated than you though, and then eventually you have done with it
- You abandoned the project and move on
I experienced it quite often. And I haven't had a finished project since quite a long time ago.
Maybe I should scale it down.5 -
Maybe you already know it and I’m just retarded.. but if not, try out kodi + Exodus add-on👌
Most comfortable streaming I’ve ever experienced.
(Here in my country streaming is completely legal so no hate please:))4 -
Hey I want to ask some react project suggestion that are good for interview as an experienced web developer. I don't want to build calculator :(

I don't know if it's only me or if anyone have experienced that sometimes, when my code is not doing what I expected it to do, then I add a log.d to debug what's happening.Then.. It magically fix the program, without me fixing it...Weird3

If my 'official' job title was programmer but I was also doing network troubleshooting and administration as well as server configuration cause we had no one experienced to do it should I include that on my resume or would it look fake?
Should I only include the programming stuff since that was my job title5 -
I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?11

I'm gonna be job shadowing some programmers to see what it's like first hand in the field soon! Its my senior year and it'll count as a field trip for my school so I won't get counted absent!!3

When you made a project deployed it and everything works fine, you feel something is left ,you make some changes and push it on ............ now the application error reflects on your screen and you think to revert the commit but before reverting the judge comes to your table.

Ich need some help with Linux.
Ich want to switch from windows 7 to Linux. But want a "Windows desktop like" environment and I'm not so experienced with linux jet (just the basics). Can you help?14 -
Objectively, I know I should leave.
The company hasn't been doing well. At all.
Projects are a shit show.
Despite everything everyone is kind and respectful, though.
My team's great and boss is good.
Pay is okay, too.
As the lead dev I am appreciated for my work and knowledge.
But the company itself seems unable to learn despite the coworkers being young.
My team doesn't have any work now because the customer canceled the project.
There have already been layoffs. 40% of people gone.
Other companies also pay well.
But damn my team is amazing.
Although I am the most experienced developer. But I know I am not THAT experienced, really. i am still young and would love to work with someone MORE experienced.
Maybe i am just lazy. Then I will likely soon be lazy and unemployed.
Oh no....3 -
Dev programming something
Code reviewer: Change x, change y change a to b
Dev: okay ( I don't give a f**k, just merge my code)
Dev made changes...
Code reviewer: why did you placed b instead of a, can you revert back x...
Dev: F**k u!!
Have u guys experienced this??1 -
When shadowing "experienced devs" as a "new dev" remember that if you fix their problems they will tell everyone they did it. At least that is my experience.2
-
What's a no CS degree, zero experience, experienced a short boot camp, was hoping this would be his break and spent a shit ton of money on it, person gotta do to get a developer job?12

while interviewing a 10 year experienced .net developer I asked, do you know Liskov substition principle.
And he was like 'what cow???'
Me: Faceslam!!!14 -
Just installed Android P. It would appear that the screen transitions in devRant had changed. Anyone else experienced this?4

"An inexperienced observer sees everything in a picture; the experienced one sees even the things that are missing." - Rastko Ciric1

My company did a test on how many of our users use ad blockers on our site. I was expecting way more, but only 5% of people actually use it... That's really surprising to me.
Has anyone else experienced similar numbers?4 -
So is it just a standard thing, now, where interviewers get you to do a coding problem remotely on a shared notepad while they watch you over video chat? For me at least, it is the most uncomfortable style of interview I've experienced. I don't think I'll ever get through one :(4
-
Just removed an API key from one of my GitHub repos (yeah I know API keys don't belong there) and at the moment i pushed the corrected file, I got an email from GitGuardian that it discovered a key in my Repo although i deleted it. Anyone else experienced something similar?2

When your changes keep being reverted and you finally discover the 'experienced' contractor has been using rebase and 'take mine' in git merges.1

I am one year experienced Android developer... just got an opportunity to work as a game developer in the same company(they will provide training)... I'm in dilemma whether to accept or no.. Is it safe to keep on changing fields😟6

May it be that .NET MAUI is supposed to be a Souls like title for developers?
Never experienced such pain creating even the simplest things :-|12 -
I remembered in my previous job, I was a frontend Dev and there is a backend developer. There's a task where computations are needed before presenting data in the frontend. Backend Dev asked me to do the computations in the frontend instead. Well well 🤷♂️
Have you experienced this before?6 -
Anyone here that is pretty new to programming? So many times when I try to develop something, I feel I can't develop it because I don't know how to start or where to start (choose lanugage, framework and so on). And sometimes I encounter problems i'll sit with in days without success and then I just give up. Any experienced programmer that experienced this and overcome it. How do I do?7
-
It bothers me when applications faill and say that they have "experienced an unexpected problem with windows". If it was expected, the devs should have fixed it.
-
Even while quite experienced, I do keep messing names up:
start_server
stop_server
And
server_start
server_stop
I do know that last example is better with autocomplete but my head thinks the other way. I find myself frequently renaming functions in the end.
What is your preference?27 -
Update on my fever: reports confirm that it's Dengue NS1.

Never had a real fight referring to any development - stuff, because most devs around me are more experienced and most of the time I can see the point in their opinions. I definitely had some discussions about some constructs in C++ for example. But thats it.

Some of you can probably relate, I've been learning to code since about 13 and it all obviously began with copy pasta code claiming proudly that you would have made it, then there were those kind of dicks which either have proven that you copied the code or pointed out how bad the code was, I've hated those kind of developers.
Welp, I just turned 18 with a lot of experience gained and I really just became that kind of person over the years, no regrets :^)1 -
