Ok, this is a rant against some devRanters.
STOP THINKING THE ANSWER TO ANY PROBLEM IS SWITCHING TO LINUX! STOP!
I am a linux user but i fucking hate people who act like dickheads to other OS users.
-A node.js problem is not a windows/linux problem
-An android studio problem is not a windows/linux problem
-A problem with website x is not a windows/linux problem
Understand the problem and give a relevant answer, don't just spit "Use Linux" everytime.40 -
Call internet provider to ask about a problem :
costumer service: in order to help you, I need to know what windows version do you use, Windows 8, windows 7...
Me: I use linux
Costumer service : I'm sorry, we don't provide support to Windows Linux16 -
I use Linux because I enjoy unexpectedly learning how to mount an encrypted disk after a software update deletes the boot directory... on a Thursday night while other people drink beer.14

These foreign Indian scammers keep calling me about "computer virus".
Today, the guy told me to press ctrl + Windows key. I told him I use Arch Linux and then told him I use Netscape as my browser, and he still didn't take the hint.
He asked me "how can you have the Windows key on your keyboard and use Linux?".
#stupidfuck8 -
"so you use Ubuntu" she said ,
"why don't you go for Linux ?" she asked.
so I dumped my girlfriend26 -
Cleaning lady just asked me what OS I use. "Well, Linux" I replied. Oh, she said, I'll ask my husband if he knows about it. He's also good with computers (probably tech support chap or something like that).
I figured that she might not remember the name "Linux", so I thought about writing it down. But it was so hard to resist the thought of instead writing down "btw I use Arch Linux"! 😆15 -
Another funny Linux encounter from my study that I suddenly remembered.
This guy said he didn't want to work with things/services that use Linux because he wanted to support software devs by buying software. I get the idea but yah...
Linux teacher: well then why don't you start with disconnecting from the WiFi. After that drop services like fb and WhatsApp which you use a lot. Also, good luck in the dev world as you're mooost probably going to encounter Linux and for being able to finish this study you'll need to succeed on Linux classes as well!
He just sat there like 'help'. A lot of fellow students were giggling as well.
Really though, my Linux teacher was an awesome young guy!11 -
"I don't use Linux because you can't game on Linux"
Shut your fucking cocksucking mouth.
Yes, support isn't the greatest and a lot of games don't work on Linux yet and some graphical drivers don't work.
But don't fucking say you can't game on Linux because you fucking can.
Steam has a Linux game library that keeps on growing and growing.
There are some platforms for games especially for Linux as well even.
I've seen steam games with freaking high requirements run with any lag on Linux computers - open source amd drivers worked well.
The support could be much better (of games/drivers) but YOU CAN FUCKING GAME ON LINUX.
THAT YOUR GAME DOESN'T RUN ON LINUX DOES NOT MEAN THAT NO SINGLE GAME DOES.
MOTHERFUCKER115 -
> Hey I use Arch
> Did you know that I use Arch Linux?
> Arch Linux with i3 is best
> Have I told you that I use Arch Linux?
> Windows is crap, I use Arch
> I love the rollback function in Arch Linux
> i3 GAPS on ARCH LINUX IS BEST
> My girlfriend is Arch Linux
> I fuck Arch Linux
> I name my kids Arch Linux27 -
They know exactly what I do, both my parents and my sister.
Then again, they use Linux as main system although they're very a-technical ;)11 -
This may sound odd but I find myself more productive when I use linux. The whole environment kind of helps me to concentrate on the work.
Bad news is I always Windows 😞16 -
A: Hey look! I have a brand new computer!
B: Oh, so you use Linux?
A: No, I use Windows.
B: Than it's not your computer.13 -
I don't remember much but I think I was sitting on my dad's lap while he was using word or something.
Windows (95/98?) though 🤢
Gladly we all use Linux now (le family)2 -
The real battle of distros......😂😂 even till now I have not settled on a Linux distro to use I am always testing them(for 3 years)7
-
To people who don't know how to use Linux: Just because I use nano instead of gedit or any other GUI text editor does not mean I'm showing off. Why can't you understand that ssh-ing into a server and opening a file in the terminal itself to edit three lines of configuration is much easier than opening FileZilla, connecting, downloading the file, making the changes and uploading it again. It's fine if you want to do it that way. But please don't judge me for doing it my way.
To people who are good with Linux: Can you please stop suggesting me to use vim instead, EVERY FUCKING TIME? I know it's more powerful, but I haven't been using Linux enough to have surpassed it's learning curve. Plus I google up how to use it and do use it when I have the need. Please let me be?
To people who tell me to use Windows for everything: Go suck a fat dick, you uncultured morons.10 -
Wish Adobe would take a similar approach like Microsoft and release their Applications for Linux.. so I could use Photoshop and Lightroom there and ditch OS X completely...10
-
Found this on discord.
Could be copypasta but I decided to share it anyway.
"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux."
The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even you were correct, you wont be for long."
With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.14 -
When i said that i use Linux, 3/4 of the class stared at me like i have a mental problem.
Then i said that i use duckduckgo and they stared at me like i was really retarded.
The sad part is that i'm in computer science department and my colleagues have not any clue about anything else than microsoft/google.11 -
Stupid tech guy: "You should use Windows, it's bettter"
Me: "No i quit Windows and use Linux"
At the end of the day he updates Windows and got a BSOD...
I laughed and walked off8 -
Enough of Linux stickers! Here are some stickers of products which I barely recognize half and use none at work 😅16
-
*sees people on Facebook wanting to get Linux certificates*
Me: naah that's not how I'ma do it
*at le job interview*
Interviewer: "So you apply as a sysadmin.. what are your skills? Certificates?"
Me: "No certificates sir.. but I USE ARCH LINUX 😎"
Me (quietly): "and Ubuntu Server too but that's not as cool :v"9 -
The Indian state of Kerala uses Linux(Edubuntu) in all the schools. This incident happened back in 2010. I was not that proficient in Linux but I liked it for some reasons.
So one day, one of my IT teachers was handed the responsibility to edit a video. Being the School Student IT Convenor, he asked for my help. I'm no Video Editor but this thing was so easy that Openshot was enough.
While I was at it, he said: "Why does the govt. want us to use such unprofessional stuff? If it was Windows we could do everything very easily. Who is ever gonna use Linux in a professional environment? The govt. is spoiling the children by urging them to use Linux, Free Software and Open Source."
I couldn't argue that day. But today I so wish I could go back and roast him!4 -
It's a shame that Adobe doesn't support Linux for their creative suit. I know lots of artists and designers that don't use Linux regularly because of this, since Photoshop and illustrator are the de facto tools for their work. Adobe xd seems to be awesome, but I can't use on my pc due the lack of support -.-21
-
hate it when Linux users talk like they own the cyber world.. linux is bla bla windows is shit shit..
I am not a linux fan, nor a Windows fan. just I use what is the best for the requirements21 -
Found an old monitor in our garage and decided to hook it up to my laptop. Yes, I am learning how to use Linux :D10
-
I recently found an old laptop and turned on. It was running Windows but was too slow to use. I had Linux installed and it runs like new. I now have a laptop to use with no extra charge. Thanks Linux!2
-
I will disregard the fact that our target platform is windows, so sure, newly hired intern, go ahead and use linux if you want, it doesnt really matter.
After that he accomplished 1 day's work in a week because he was googling how to set up linux environments
CHOOSE THE TOOL FOR THE FUCKING JOB YOU DIMWIT9 -
Do i need to say something ?
Well, 7th try over half a year.
Spent today like 6hrs... oh man. I’m proud.rant btw btw i use arch linux did i mention that i now use arch? i use arch finally done i use arch linux21 -
OS relationship(explicitly)
Windows is my girlfriend
Mac is that rich girl I always wanted to

Linux is Side bitch that I only use when above are not responding8 -
"devRantron has been launched a total of 16620 times.
433 so far this month and 17 times today.
31.4% use Linux, 57.7% use Windows and 10.8% use macOS"
I assume the 31.4% Linux users are the most active.
PS : congratulations devRantron devs and nice work with the theme update.14 -
I hate these LINUX AND NOTHING ELSE fascists. Why don't you just let people use what they want? And btw: just using Linux doesn't make you a good programmer...18
-
Arch Linux is officially dead due to fanboys who always says “I use Arch Linux” everytime when they open mouth. It is considered as mental illness so they have to shut down.10
-
How many guys have experienced this?
Heard this from a supposed Linux user
Other dev: I have been using Linux for 3 years I'm really good at it.
Then sees me use "cd" and "mv" commands
Other dev: wow that's some complex stuff
Me: 😂😂😂
True story2 -
Linux... Is shitty... Ok it just is. I've tried all kinds of variations and they all just... Urgh
Now I know... I know devs are meant to love it ... But compare it to windows
(Yes windows fucks up more) but when it works it works.
... Windows isn't perfect... But it doesn't try to be.
Linux has that feel of... Clearly made by a dev... It works consistently but doesn't take into account how people want to use something...
Linux is something you have to learn to love. And I'm sure I could.
But with windows it's intuitive it's straight forward
I feel like if I was to pick up windows having never used it... I would know how it works. I could at least use it go online and watch videos do the basics... In Linux ... No it's not as easy, sometimes not possible
An os you should just know how to do everything you want to do, and not have to download tonnes of shit to get it that way
It is, the future... But holy fuck get your act together Linux65 -
This is real. I Used to hop distros like a mad man and I stopped hopping after installing arch and started hopping between desktop environments and window managers. Source: r/linuxmastrrrace16

PM has decided to learn linux. Today he asked me if "downloading" linux would make it so he can't use windows anymore.
I ended up sending him a link on how to use the ubuntu shell on windows. Then about half an hour later he asked me why he couldn't type to enter his password. This should be fun...8 -
To whom it may concern,
When I say I use Linux, please do not presume that I mean Ubuntu or other Debian derivates. If you send me instructions like 'apt-get update' you are not being helpful.
Thank you.6 -
One of the main reasons I completely left windows and osx for Linux is the fact that Linux is open source. In an era of mass surveillance, secret court orders ordering companies to build in backdoors into their products, companies building in tracking into their software and so on, I find it irresponsible to use closed source software.
Only my personal opinion though.8 -
I have nothing against windows (use it on main pc) but man does it get slow on "not top of the line" laptops. Linux here i come.15
-
Best decisions:
- Switching to Linux entirely
- Learning how to use the shell
Worst decisions:
- Using Windows 8
- Hardcoded passwords (I built a small thing for myself, don't judge)3 -
Does linux suck? Imho, Yes.
A lot of the people bash windows regarding automatic restarts, updates, bsod etc.
I may be unusually lucky, but the last bsod I saw was in 2014 because of a faulty synaptics driver.
I've really tried to use linux to see what the hype is all about. Quite frankly, it sucked. The first time it wiped out all my data, I realized the value of backups. Hence I do not have a single pic of my school now, thanks to complicated ubuntu mounting.
Next is driver support. When I plug in a device, I expect it to work. I don't want to spend a day googling for drivers.
Why the fuck would I want to use a black terminal which gives me a headache. Am I in 1980? Which sadistic asshole designed vim ?
I have seen linux developers who claim to be linux experts and love linux. They take so long to do simple shit. For god's sake don't tell me there are GUI versions of linux available. I'd rather work in windows 95.
Why in the world would anyone want to use ls to see the contents of a directory! It is seriously so fucking unproductive.
I can't just download a software, click next a couple of times, and be done. No no no. I've to do sudo apt get update. Then try to find the fucking package. And if all goes well, there's always the dependency issue which is going to bite me in the ass. If google and stackoverflow go down, most linux devs will die a cruel death.
Fuck you linux.
I'm not saying windows 10 is the best, but at least I don't have to crawl through shit to use it. If you don't like automatic updates, disable it you moron. It is easier than renaming a damn file in linux.57 -
I love Linux, use it almost daily
, but those windows update horror storys aren't happening when I'm using windows.
I think those days are gone, and people are just hating.27 -
Interviewer: Why do you use Linux distribution for your development environment?
Me: Because I want to make my life as difficult as possible1 -
Well, I guess all the Linux folks are going to know what I am talking about. Do you know this feeling (Yes, you know. Don't tell me anything.) when you use Linux and nobody else uses Linux in your Work/School. And these people come to you and say.
Stupid people : Oh! You use Linux. That's bullshit!
Me : No it's not. It doesn't do 24/7 updates like Windows.
Stupid people : No, Linux is bullshit you don't have money for Windows. And Linux can't run professional Applications.
Unfortunately there is no medicine that cures dumbness. Just saying ...
I'd rather stay not dumb like these people instead of buying another Windows license.24 -
I'm going to use this anytime I see people arguing about Linux distros on this site...
Source: https://xkcd.com/178/2 -
My employer doesn't allow us to use Linux; I have to use MacOS because "Windows is sooooo bad".
Fucking hell I'd choose Windows every day if the year over this garbage fucking OS9 -
Just made the shift to a Linux development environment from a windows one... Gotta say it feels so much better (love Ubuntu's interface)
Miss the use of photoshop though (I Know gimp exists... But photoshop is just so much better)
Any tips for a linux/ubuntu newbie??36 -
Imagine if, when a Windows version became outdated (So anything before Windows 8, I guess), Microsoft made it available in the public domain.
We could have Windows distributions, just like Linux! Imagine how weird it would sound if you just said to your Linux-using friend, 'Oh yeah, I use arch!' and they replied 'Oh, me too! I love Arch Linux!', and you just stare at them and say:
'What's Linux? I only use Arch Windows.'
...
...
...
'Arch Windows? Are you stupid?', they would reply in utter disbelief.
We all know someone's gonna blurt out 'Yeah guys! I just downloaded Kali Windows so I could learn to hack, I don't know what you're talking about!'
Ah, good times.3 -
Read some books
Get a computer
Write some codes
Use Linux
Hate Microsoft
Argue Vim vs Emacs
Debate 4 spaces vs tabs
Use dark themes
Follow buzzwords..
Now repeat after me, "I am a programmer...."4 -

I hate Apple and I hate all their products and I hate everyone that thinks Apple is "innovating" and I don't know why so many developers use OSX when they can use Linux. A closed source company with a closed mind.37 -
So... Been making a script so that my tmux layout on my tty only hard drive displays the weather.
Apparently there is a place called 'Shit' in the world, and there's some 'Patchy rain possible' in 'Shit'.
'Shit' also seems to be 15 °C, and have 3km/h winds. Not sure which direction, but I hope nowhere near my house.7 -
When I still used swing to programm some games, I met a friend and I told him stupid because he was using linux instead of just windows, just because I didnt knew what linux actually is. He then showed me some features of linux and I said, that I'll never switch to linux because I like Win 10. After that he showed me Discord as well as telegram. And again i told him I'll never use it because I got teamspeak and whatsapp. About 1 week later I only use Discord, have a linux OS installed and using telegram (but still whatsapp).
Thanks for opening my eyes ;)8 -
Apart from the technical reasons and such. I use Linux because it feels good. And it makes me happy. You should never forget about the soft values.1
-
My raspberry Pi finally arrived ☺️! Now i just have to set it up... Any advice on what linux distro i should put on it? (i will use it as a NAS, torrent server and pi hole)7
-
If Adobe would just release their products on Linux I would literally have no reason to ever use Windows again...11
-
I just learned that linux shouldn't be called linux but GNU (or GNU/Linux)
I am a student and currently learning programming but also I looked into history and saw this interesting fact.
Basically, there was a guy who wanted to make operating system similar to unix but free to use and distribute. He called it GNU. After few years, it was getting finished but it was missing few parts. One of those parts was kernel. So people glued together this low level kernel called Linux, mid level GNU and some other stuff on top of it. It was first known as GNU/Linux and slowly GNU was kicked out of the name even though 'Linux' - the whole OS constisted more of GNU than Linux kernel.
Doesn't this seem like injustice? Am I wrong somewhere?23 -

Those managers who think that Microsoft is the only platform and believe that Linux is insecure - fuck off. I don't want to use azure, you ass.3

i met an old friend in a mall and he start talk about linux
friend: hey i just installed arch linux in my laptop!
me: wow cool! you are so expert.
friend: btw i have a problem with it, how to change directory in their black screen?
me: cd?
friend: no! i didn't use cd. i use flashdisk to install it.
me: ah.. okay.3 -
When some born-in-the-90s chode claims that linux is bullshit because you might sometimes have to use the keyboard on the command line, I set that motherfucker's house on fire.4

My use of linux could legally drink now, in the US. And even after 21 years, I still love it more all the time.2

I swear to God if “Microsoft testicle supprt” calls me one more time I’m going to flip. I think it may be time to set up a sandbox and get the fucks to “fix my computer.”
It would be a shame if instead of payment for their “support” their computers became infected with ransomeware...
I know what I’m doing today.10 -
With the announcement of WSL2, I am really concerned for linux DEs.
I use linux distros not just for the kernel but because most linux DEs do a far better job that windows ever will.
But the next gen programmers probably will never leave their shit systems for any distro because guess what... thay can just use WSLs.
I would probably have done the same.
You need to use a linux DE (Gnone/KDE/etc.) for at least a couple days to understand how great it is but people won't do it because windows is good enough and they can achieve most tasks in wsl.
Linux Foundation already doesn't care about DEs. (And why would they... Microsoft is filling their pockets).
I hope people still find wsl crap and have enough reasons to give any linux DE at least a few days try.
Wrote from my Manjaro KDE :(40 -
When i started to get into computers i didn't know a shit about Linux, i had the typical idea that is for hackers. Now i see how things that we use everyday like the phone uses it.

Whats the big appeal of macs. I know there good for graphical use and social media but Linux looks just as good and it dosent cost a few thousand. And then there's windows.33

What is the most common behavior between Arch users and vegan? 😂😂
I found this comment on a video that had nothing to do with Arch and being vegan11 -
In the very rare occasion that I boot into windows instead of linux is when I want to use Photoshop to edit some photos - usually works fine. USUALLY. I now see why everyone complains about windows updates12

Took me awhile, and 3 reinstalls but I finally got my second hard drive on Linux, Kubuntu with most of the things I use to code here and zsh on powerlevel9k. Yey!8

I am currently blocked from doing my job by a firewall policy handed down from corporate that prevents WSL2 from connecting to the internet. Three days of no dev environment and counting.
We make linux software to be hosted on linux in linux containers in linux. We use linux command line tools to make it work.
"NO! WE ARE THE ALL-POWERFUL IT DEPARTMENT AND YOU MUST USE WINDOWS BECAUSE FUCK YOU THAT'S WHY."14 -
I hate Microsoft for not making Office run on Linux. It's the only reason I have to use a fucking MacBook instead of a Linux laptop. No Microsoft, I'm not going to run windows on my laptop. The system ist too much different to my production systems.
I hate Microsoft for not thinking about the consequences of not providing a Linux version. I have to use the fucking Apple Finder in my daily job. I have to buy a thousand dongles to connect anything to my laptop.8 -
I just managed to configure a second keyboard to map its keys to separate keycodes. Basically, I should be able to use it as a complete macro deck 😏 Thank god for Linux6
-
I love how my University CSSE courses make it hard for Windows users.
Student: Is it possible use VALGRIND in Windows CMD?
prof: I don't know, I only use Linux command line. Next question.
All programs must compile and run on Linux using g++. So everyone using windows has strip the IDE bloat and transfer the project files over to the remote Linux lab every single time they compile and run.
Benefits of being a Linux user!5 -
People talk about how the use of Linux as a desktop requires an inordinate amount of time, as if that's a unique problem in Linux. There is no such thing as an operating system that I don't spend weeks and months tweaking to make my own.
The difference is that Linux doesn't resist me like other OSes.2 -
[See image]
This guy is wrong in so many ways.
"Windows/macOS is the best choice for the average user. Prove me wrong."
There are actually many Gnu/Linux based operating systems that's really easy to install and use. For example Debian/any Debian based OS.
There are avarage users that use a Gnu/Linux based operating system because guess what. They think its better and it is.
Lets do a little comparision shall we.
- - - - - Windows 10 - - Debian
Cost $139 Free
Spyware Yes. No
Freedom Limited. A lot
"[Windows] It's easy to set up, easy to use and has all the software you could possibly want. And it gets the job done. What more do you need? I don't see any reason for the average joe to use it. [Linux]"
Well as I said earlier, there are Gnu/Linux based operating systems thats easy to set up too.
And by "[Windows] has all the software you could possibly want." I guess you mean that you can download all software you could possibly want because having every single piece of software (even the ones you dont need or use) on your computer is extremely space inefficient.
"Linux is far from being mainstream, I doubt it's ever gonna happen, in fact"
Yes, Linux isn't mainstream but by the increasing number of people getting to know about Linux it eventually will be mainstream.
"[Linux is] Unusable for non-developers, non-geeks.
Depends heavily on what Gnu/Linux based operating system youre on. If youre on Ubuntu, no. If youre on Arch, yes. Just dont blame Linux for it.
"Lots of usability problems, lots of elitism, lots of deniers ("works for me", "you just don't use it right", "Just git-pull the -latest branch, recompile, mess with 12 conf files and it should work")"
That depends totally on what you're trying to. As the many in the Linux community is open source contributors, the support around open source software is huge and if you have a problem then you can get a genuine answer from someone.
"Linux is a hobby OS because you literally need to make it your 'hobby' to just to figure out how the damn thing works."
First of all, Linux isnt a OS, its a kernel. Second, no you dont. You dont have to know how it works. If you do, yes it can take a while but you dont have to.
"Linux sucks and will never break into the computer market because Linux still struggles with very basic tasks."
Ever heard of System76? What basic tasks does Linux struggle with? I call bullshit.
"It should be possible to configure pretty much everything via GUI (in the end Windows and macOS allow this) which is still not a case for some situations and operations."
Most things is possible to configure via a GUI and if it isnt, use the terminal. Its not so hard

The new company I'll work in told me that I have to use windows because they have an ad and Linux login does not work proper with it...4

I dual boot windows and Linux. I use Windows primarily for light gaming on the weekends.
Somehow, the windows updates have successfully managed to break my grub menu, and my Linux partition is booting into Grub Rescue mode.
Right now tolerating the windows updates, which have been painfully going on for the past 2 hours now. Later, I'll have to deal with fixing my Linux partition boot.5 -
So now i have Linux installed everything is better than Windows but i want to program in c#... Should i use a VM or a Dual Boot with Windows and KDE Neon?15

phpMyAdmin
Well, it is not my favorite open source project... I almost never have to use DBs, but when I do, it just saves my life. I can create the tables, keys without worring about any SQL command.
But day to day life is GNU/Linux, Firefox, bash/zsh, git... There are lots of opensource tools that I use, and love, everyday. :)2 -
i wonder, does my mom use linux? cuz i can't refuse whatever she wants me to do.
it's like she always 'sudo'-ing me around6 -
Update to my previous desire to install Arch Linux on my MacBook...
Well, I installed it, played around a bit... now gonna install OS X back... primary reasons being the fact that there r a lot of things which u must do to get arch to work perfectly in MacBook... ( special kernels and stuff ) and I use an iPhone 😐... in other words, m locked to the ecosystem... for now...
I was so hoping to use arch... it wud have been amazingly fast on the SSD... 😍😍
No m not gonna use VM since it’s not fun 😂😂
Wish iTunes worked in Linux too ☹️😕7 -
Why does Linux Bluetooth audio not work properly!!!!
I have been using Linux on my laptop (moving from macOS). I got so used to Linux, and I love it so much at this point, but I really wanna use my Bluetooth speakers (subwoofer ❤️❤️).
So, now, I have to use OSX again and I am actually disliking it.

After 3.5 terms, I still see people running Linux in a vm && writing C code in nano.
Should I be concerned if that really freaks me out?
Usually I'd say use whatever floats your boat but I just don't get why they don't dual boot, they'll need Linux in pretty much every term...16 -
Is using Arch Linux the nerd equivalent of being vegan?
Like they have to mention it to everyone.
Btw I use Arch and am vegan.2 -
it kills when people say dual boot Linux with Windows. I know how painful it is. as people who like to install Linux just pray why doesn't Linux supports it all. because all they want to do is use Linux full time. 😑😖😭8
-
What console you use?
I use this one:
https://cmder.net/
I highly recommend it, you can use linux commands
Share yours!17 -
What are your favorite distros for Linux? I'm new to Linux so I'm just curious on what's out there that you guys use most and what's most convenient for development! Also can I PLEASE get some upvotes I want an avatar so bad lol8

Today my cousin is getting his first computer. I am just confused, either I should make him use linux or windows on it. Suggestions are appreciated.18 -
To the person who talked about termux in a post, thank you. I tryed to find said post but to no avail.
I've been frustrated because I can't use servers or run Linux in Android 8 and termux is a bliss.
I'm a noob in Linux so it's extra time in the terminal -
I seriously don't get it guys, can you answer to this post with your job and the os you use?
I'm a games developer and I'm happy on Windows,I couldn't even imagine switching to Linux or Mac, but everybody's on either a Mac or Linux.
I have to know why.41 -
I'm considering getting to learn to use Linux, however, I have No idea what distribution I should start out with, any recommendations? If you know a good tutorial to getting started, feel free to post :)23
-
I get really fucking mad, when people show termux and boast about "aai yuse leenox"
Use the real god damn GNU/Linux. If it is not available for your device then PORT IT! Like i did..11 -
Windows: Notepad.exe. Best ever, supports any language, can edit any text file, and comes as default on all computers, so I can develop on any computer which have internet access.
Linux: Nano. Easiest to use, and supports almost all flavours of linux.5 -
I soo want to use Linux (maybe Arch) on my main desktop but I got some programs like FL Studio which only run on Windows.
A Windows VM feels so not snappy :(7 -
The most annoying thing about being an IT professional...
Microsoft never calls me to tell me there is a problem with my computer. WTF!
I use Linux, but still, I totally miss all the fun I would have with that wanker...1 -
So I just restored a computer for my grandpa
it was quite the task because I had ot learn how to use revovery grub but finnaly I was able to get linux.
ALEXA PLAY CHAMPION BY QUEENS9 -
Hello, devs! I'm an intern at a mobile games company. I used to work with the game development there, but today I started my work in the support/tools team. Am so glad I can use Linux and ruby there *-*3

How can I learn to use Linux effectively as a developer? I’m a first-year CS student at university and based on what I’ve read here and on the web, I need to know the Linux system and it’s various distros. Any resources are greatly appreciated 😁5
-
That moment you are forced to use Windows to develop PHP Stuff and arent allowed to install Linux because of "Company Regulations" (aka Windows only Admins) ...
I just want my beloved Linux Dev Stack here :(4 -
Unpopular opinion: macOS is better for working on the go than Linux.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Linux... for servers and desktops. Linux, particularly Arch, is incredible at running only the bare minimum of what you need in a system, so that you use the power of the machine to fullest. Don't get me started on the out-of-the-box compatibility with development in general.
However, I just spent 2 days trying to get the freaking wifi working on my Linux laptop. When I opened up my Macbook, it *just worked.* I really don't have the time to be dicking around with configs when I am working on the go.
Especially with technologies such as Docker, Git, and SSH, it's actually really easy to have the same development environment on my macbook and Linux desktop... and as much as I hate to say it, I think it's no more Linux on laptops for me anymore.10 -
I’ve never bothered to try Linux as past experiences with it is not as amazing as people say. What advantages does Linux have to Windows? And it terms of real life usage, such as developing software or websites for a local company, why choose Linux over Windows when the majority of the companies users would use Windows anyway?
All I can think is that I should have a computer specifically for Linux so I can still test things on a Windows computer.19 -
Am i the only one who can't use the Windows command prompt after i recently learned how to use the Linux terminal?
Heck. I can't even navigate properly in the cmd prompt and when a command fails i forget i use Windows and puts 'sudo' before the command even though it's godamn Windows.
Guess i have gotten too used to Linux.3 -
So I was just wondering, how many of you here use FreeBsd and why?
Is there a big difference between BSD and Linux?
Are there many BSD servers out there?7 -
I use a Mac for developing. I'm thinking of using a VM with a linux distro to develop in my Windows machine. What's a good distro for developing Node/React apps?9
-
I don't understand how people use Windows for development! And then they get GitBash and WSL and those terminals that let you use Linux commands and what not, like why not just get gnu/Linux or macOS?19
-
I've running Mac for one month and one week now. Now, every time I'm going to use it my thought is: I JUST WANTED A NORMAL NOTEBOOK RUNNING LINUX I DON'T WANT TO USE THIS SHIT.6
-
Fall Creators Update did some changes to Bash on Windows, first they renamed it to WSL(Windows Subsystem for Linux) and now you can have multiple distros on it.
They also added it to Windows Server.
I have no idea why people would use Windows Server, but I guess that if you are forced to use it, you can now use Linux utilities on it, so woot? I guess.5 -
Just suggested to the question on how to merge pdfs to a single large one to use MS Word for that.
It was a Linux only group.
I live dangerous in other ways as well. -
I'm not one of those "windows sucks lol" guys, but I got used to having my dev environment set on Linux and due to some technical problems I'm setting things up on Windows for a while (dual boot).
Now... Jesus CHRIST how annoying this is. First, I use Laravel and the whole documentation assumes you're either using Mac or Linux. Second, everything has to be added to the god-damned PATH. Third, Windows sole purpose now seems to be updating the PC (and hogging my bandwidth in the process) so I had to waste time taming the beast called Windows Update.
Again, not the stupid old Linux vs Windows thing. I use both for different things, but had never set up a dev environment on Windows.11 -
Uno questione:
Seeing as linux might be going down the shitter soon, could the, 'btw I use arch", meme be replaced with, "btw I use OpenBSD"?
Like I did with the last question, have a snek.12 -
My father has an old powermac (G5 I believe) and wants a modern lightweight OS since apple dropped support a while ago. I proposed Linux and my father seemed intrigued to try it out. Tomorrow I get the machine and get to set it up.
I was thinking of Elementary OS, since he is an Apple fanboy. What do you think about that decision?
Never used or installed it before, but how hard can it be?
*obligatorily mentioning that I use Arch Linux*6 -
Ok so there are a lot of things out there like #WhyIUseLinux, well as a Linux lover that is stuck using windows, I say we start a 'why I use windows' discussion.
For me, I'm stuck on windows simply because the game development engine I use is only on windows and mac and doesn't seem to play nicrly when run on a VM, if the software was released on Linux I would swap over in a heart beat!5 -
What operating system are you using for developing?
I use Manjaro Linux and I will never go back to something else.11 -
USE F🤬 GNU/LINUX!!! After, make technology really available (there’s cheap but functional options like ltsp). Teach the f🤬 bases of programming! Use open source softwares! How Internet works and privacy thing! Learn to read f🤬 terms of contract and privacy things, teach that ie is fucking shit and also, the most important thing! Use dark theme, don’t hurt others like I was!
And also, use vim -
Im gonna get a new laptop soon and on my old laptop I want to install linux (cant do that on my main laptop because Im a windows dev at the moment).
I am not new to linux and have used 3 major ubuntu versions and it was all trouble, autoremoving files after update etc.
So I am planning to go Manjaro but which desktop environment shall I use? I've heard great things about i3 and Cinnamon. Gnome is not something I liked in Ubuntu.
Which desktop environment do you use, why and how did you make the choice?6 -
Finally managed to flash Linux on my 250GB SSD with Linux! (After breaking it several times...)
Now I have a question to people that have a Linux/Windows Dual-boot:
What do you use Linux for, and what do you use windows for?
Really unsure how I should use the disk... Had an 16GB USB for school until now. (Lost it tho)
I plan to use it for school as well but I'm kinda afraid of losing it. (Was expensive)
Therefore I tend to just use it at home.23 -
Okay soooo.... I have this laptop that I use a little less often but is bugging me about. So WINDOWS just decides to RAMP UP THE HARD DRIVE TO ALL HELL WHENEVER I NEED TO USE IT.
I have a few options:
- Replace the 1TB 5400RPM with a 120GB SSD and do Linux
- Replace the 1TB with the 120GB and do a fresh install of Windows
- Replace Windows with Linux, keeping the 1TB
- or reinstall Windows
Which do you suggest and why?4 -
will move to linux again, this time I hope will be the last. I'm motivated from a rant in which some guys discussed about proton having a lot of tittles supported in steam
got rise of nations from steam working in laptop with freshly installed linux mint 19.3 . (same game does not run in my win 10)
will use same distro in my gaming pc and hopefully will keep on linux for a while 🤞
wish me luck9 -
Finally set up my home server and port forwarded it so I can use linux everywhere even as a window pleb.
Now just to make a solution for not having a static IP address...2 -
I've recently gotten this idea to take a Chromebook and run Linux on it.
Why a Chromebook, you ask? Well ChromeOS is a Linux kernel, boots using coreboot, and Google now requires that OEMs support LVFS (fwupd), i.e. the Chromebook is a very Linux friendly laptop.
Some other reasons I would use a Chromebook are: it's cheap, basically useless otherwise, amongst other things.
So, what do you guys think, good idea or not?14 -
[linux distro stuff]
Hey guys!
Im considerig switching to linux because:
My macbook does not support mojave and the new ones are expensive af.
Windows 10 is bloated and not a great user experience(removing stuff from the control panel and adding it to the very stripped down settings app, privacy etc..).
I love open source software
However i did not used linux for a long time, back then i used ubuntu and SUSE.
My considerations:
Debian - because .deb on them haters
OpenSUSE - because i used it in the past and it seemed very stable and fast
Arch - i heard from a lot of sources that it’s “da best”
My use case is game development and 3D modeling. I use gimp, blender vscode and unity (the game engine) at work i sometimes use autodesk stuff (motionbuilder, 3ds max) because of fbx.
For audio stuff i use audacity
So overall i’m looking for a distro that is fast, lightweight, i can develop on it (mostly 3D stuff) and occasionally play some games
Anyone has experience with the mentioned distros? What distro would you use for this?6 -
Which Linux should I use for a dual boot for my PC? It shouldn't be too hard tobuse cause I'm an absolite Linux beginner.22
-
I am really thinking of switching my main computer over to linux. I’m getting pretty tired of windows bugs and I keep finding myself wanting to use linux commands. The only reason I haven’t switched is MS Office products and video games, but I suppose I could make a new windows image just for that and dual-boot...13
-
Recently I see people installing Linux distros to their Macbooks. Is MacOS that bad? I mean I use Ubuntu in my daily life but let's accept that most of the Linux distros (for desktop of course) has hickups. I haven't used MacOS but there is a big company maintaining and optimizing it for just few machines. What is the point installing a Linux distro to a Mac?6
-
I use mySQL workbench on a daily basis, but I've been having issues with the dark GTK theme not working well with Linux. Should I do a workaround to get workbench to use a light GTK theme, learn to use SQL from the CLI, or go with a third option?16

C# or c++. Hi im starting to learn programming and i have to decide between c# or c++. I use linux as my os. What do you think?17

I've always been tempted to move at least in some part over to a version of Linux but don't know how to go about it safely because I still love my win10 for casual use, so advise for moving to Linux??10

It's always funny to see my teachers panicking when they see that I don't use the same text editor as them and on the top of that i'm on linux.
Why don't u use netbeans ?
Rhetorical question3 -
So I really like Linux, but I also have to use windows and can't do a dual boot because of space issues. Guess I'm stuck with bash for windows...9
-
You know, i think making a linux distro where it's ubuntu but "Sudo" is swapped with the word "Please" would be a good use of knowledge and time4
-
Is there anyway to install Linux on my SSD and configure it use my HDD for storage and application installations like you can on Windows?
I've looked on google but I can't find an answer.2 -
To all you linux fans out there:
What DE/WM would you use for a 2 monitor desktop setup?
I’ve tried i3 and a couple major DEs (xfce, gnome, kde,...) and i don’t really have a strong preference for either.
I like the efficiency of i3 but also the ease of use of - say - xfce. I’d definitely use i3 on a laptop, but i dunno what i should go for on desktop... recommendations?6 -
Today Phoronix posted a short article about a (in my opinion cool) new feature I implemented in my file manager (Dolphin). Most of the feedback was positive/constructive criticism but some people attacked me personally because they don't like the feature/think "true" Linux users wouldn't use it.
I gave you something cool for free. Would you please stop bitching about it?
If you don't like it don't use it. You can even disable it if it threatens your ego as a Linux master user5 -
Everytime I use Linux and Git I wish in the Linus's time there was more crappy tools and he would make an alternative for these too.
-
Hey guys, has anyone got an idea which Linux Distro I could use next? I've already been using Mint, Debian and OpenSUSE but now I'm searching for something different.26
-
Updated to Win10 Anniversary Update. I've seen the bug-hell. Reinstalled Win8.1. Updated to Win10. I've lost a full afternoon doing nothing. Please stahp! That's why I use Linux.7

Im curious to know how people organise their workspace on windows.
I learned coding with linux.
I scored my first real job and they use mac. All good.
But at home i game and sometimes i feel like coding/gaming at the same time. But fark i hate the terminal.
How do you make it more ho my zsh/ linux terminal comfortable?6 -
I'm actually setting up a server that's supposed to have a very good uptime with Arch Linux
ha
I use Arch btw13 -
What linux distro do you guys use?
I was looking for a simple one to start with. For now i just use it for C, Java and some python.
What distro should I pick?21 -
After having tried my hand at setting up Linux on my personal PC, something has dawned on me.
I don't think Linux should be used as a desktop experience. I absolutely love the idea and concept of Linux, and of course use it for servers and the like, but with the current state of most distros, I don't think it's a suitable replacement for Windows/MacOS.
Any good arguments against this?20 -
I've been constantly switching between my Linux PC and Mac. What a pain in the ass. Why can't they have same keyboard layout?
Don't hate me for this but linux seems more productive to me. Mostly because of the ease of use and the shortcuts. I mean yeah I can create new shortcuts and stuff for my Mac but why should I bother? Any productivity tips for mac?7 -
Your favorite linux distribution? Which window manager / desktop env do you use? I have a popOS from System_76 with default settings (so gnome) :-)30
-
Every time I try to use Android Studio in any linux distribution it makes file system read only mode and I have to use fsck command every time. Is there anybody who have the same problem as me 😐😐3
-
Why is real workable Linux with GUI so big? Windows XP is sub 1 gig, any Linux distro (real one that is, not Tiny Core Linux) is several times that. What am I supposed to use for my old ThinkPads and EEE PCs?
I don't need anything more than what XP gives me. Just an OS with GUI that can run software. Give me a Linux distro that does the same that Windows XP does, while weighing the same. Is it too much to ask?33 -
Wanted to know: what shell do you guys use on Windows, considering cmd.exe sucks and PowerShell doesn’t even pass the Doherty Threshold? I myself use Clink with *nix binaries and WSL for what is Linux-only.21
-
I hate it when I use another desktop environment on linux like xfce or mate and I end up trying to press super key+shift+q to quit an application.2
-
Am I the only one that feels like the Linux sound driver (alsa) have a more clean sound than the windows drivers? I'm a pianist (at least I'm playing the piano in my free time 😜) and I feel more comfortable with the sound on my Linux. (I use the same physical piano modeling software on both systems)1
-
I'm really in love with Linux, I use it for work and programming. But at Home I still have a Windows Desktop PC. But All the Windows Updates in the past days (and even today) and the other Shit the Shit Windows has, I want to Switch to Linux even for my Home pc. I think for the first time I'll install it on a separate disk.
I want to try some new Linux Distribution. How about elementary os? I Like the design, its really attractive.
Thank you for Sharing your opinion with me :)4 -
I have been using Windows my entire life but never gotten the bluescreen of death.. What ha e i been doing wrong?! :P
Also I want to learn to use Linux. Which is best for developing and beginners ?11 -
Is Ubuntu subsystem for Linux any good? I'm still unable to have a stable Linux install so I thought I would use it because I'm just so used to Linux.7
-
Google should really add support for Linux on Chromebooks. I don't see a reason to pay £1k for a Pixel Book just for build quality and great looks. However, having native Linux support and being able to use something more useful than ChromeOS would be hugely attractive and I would consider buying it.4
-
Any linux distro recommendations that works well in a virtual machine? Would like to try Linux but I still use Windows for my everyday C# and student life.27
-
Yesterday I tried to install virtualbox to be able to run gitlab-runner with a Docker executor locally. I completely fucked up. After a reboot, I'm not able to run GDM/gnome/cinnamon(segfault), so I have to run Xorg as root without any window manager, and it sucks. I have to work all day with this shitty config.
Fuck myself, Fuck Arch, I'm switching to manjaro7 -
Wtf, there exists vim on windows :o, even tho I don't use it that much, except when on Linux servers, but still it's a nice addition3
-
My 2 cents on different OSes to use.
I think Linux is best for running servers and services and having long run times with little issues (when its Console and not GUI based.) But I have a lot of issues with using its GUI distributions like Ubuntu and it feels kind of unpolished in that area.
I prefer macOS for its GUI as it actually works and has far less issues than Windows GUI and is (IMO) better than Linux GUI's by far. But macOS just doesn't feel like it was designed super users and it can feel like its holding you back a bit. Also you have to use Mac hardware which are amazing machines, they are just overpriced.
I prefer Windows for its GUI and despite its problems, it is very well designed for super users and has very well designed remote desktop features and scalability (although it is a pain to maintain.) Windows works well for connected company systems.
In my opion:
Linux: Servers, databases (no GUI)
macOS: Designers, photo/video editing, IT/programmers and general use as a standalone (not part of a company system).
Windows: IT/programmers, super users, general use but better than macOS at working together in a company setup, but macOS is better at being a personal laptop or PC.
I personally use Linux for our email and web servers. Windows for our company computers (designers use Macs) and I have a Macbook as my own personal computer.25 -
As we all know we have Apple, MS and linux fanboys & girls here. I myself am strongly MS oriented however I like and use Linux too. I have never tried running a virtualized Win10 pro on Linux though. Anyone ever did that? And if so, what did you use to get it working and did it work well? Since my last 2 clients I always work on a VM so that I have a windows VM specifically setup for my client so their config and apps don't mess with my personal dev needs. So I curently run Win10 pro inside hyper v vm on win10 pro. I'd like to experiment and run win 10 pro vm on linux so any suggestions etc are highly appreciated.11

Why is Ruby on Rails such pain in the ass on Windows? A college of mine uses Windows for our project, since I use Linux I rarely get any errors :)2
-
Is booting linux from a drive a good way to start with linux if I'm not too sure I should make it my main os? The only thing keeping me back at this point is gaming since it's my gaming rig but idk I have 2 distros I want to use/decide between that I've loved on vms in the past but it's just me actually going through with doing it22
-
not used to this on windows
Operation Successful...
Why do professors need .doc files? Pdf works too. I don't know how to use windows. Give me linux.1 -
What if you could alt+tab out of windows in your virtualbox VM to windows in windows and vice-versa
And yes, I'd prefer native Linux but it's a work computer so I can't use it -
Question to all linux users:
tl;dr MS office alternate for linux?
I am planning on switching from Win to some linux distro. But I hesitate bc I don't know what I should use instead of MS office or how I could still use it. I am searching an office suite that has a rather comprehensive UI, is stable, can be used offline and is compatible with MS Office since I still have to use it in school.
What do you use or would recommend?5 -
I am a newbie.
Just want to know why u use linux as for programming?
Is there anyone who prefers windows over linux even though he is not into gaming stuff?8 -
YAS!
I've convinced my brother to try the Linux. Now I have to choose for him simple to use distro. I was thinking Linux Mint, but I don't really know if I should get him Cinnamon or MATE.8 -
To create a native CLI application for Linux, windows and Mac using C or just use C# and tell people to use mono... These are the real questions that I can't tell if I'm too lazy to ask myself properly...9

While talking about how Windows dropped support for a line of AMD GPUs (not really sure which), I suggested they use Linux.
Friend: "You know, whenever I hear Linux, it's always from oraro"

Reinstalling linux, any distro suggestion? I was using Manjaro, I very likely will again, but might use a different DE
I'm considering just arch, but can't think of any advantages7 -
jr.: which os may I used for our syllabus?
me: look every OS has it's own pron and cons .
jr : ohh. still tell me.
me: but linux is superior among them. use ubuntu.4 -
Best Linux distro for NodeJS back end projects? Maybe I have to work with docker or VMs. I currently have Ubuntu Mate but I want to change. I have 8Gb of RAM and performance is what I need.
2nd Question with low priority: is anyone able to use office 365 without the online solution in any Linux distro?5 -
EVERY GODDAMN TIME I use FREAKING Windows in my computer, I have to reconfigure FUCKING EVERYTHING. But seriously, every goddamn time it fucks up with the other OS'. Mac and Linux aren't acting up, you little shit.3

Is there any way I can develop iOS apps on Windows? I read about VirtualBox and I already use it to run Linux. Any suggestions? Cant get a macbook right now!9

I want to try installing Linux from scratch. So without a fancy ui just bash. Has someone a reccomendation how and where to start? The goal is to use the system for daily use.12

I use the Parrot OS linux distro and I think my built in python interpreter is broken, when I run a .py program from the command line, I get errors that I don't get when I run them in pycharm, why is this happening?8
-
Finally decided to work on my kernel update script a bit (basically I compile the mainline kernel and configure it to slim it down a ton for my laptop, and that gets annoying so I wrote a script to do it for me). As of right now it is functional, it MAY require some babysitting, cause sometimes shit goes wrong, but it hasn't given me any problems the last few times I've run it. But it's also written with Arch in mind (using linux-mainline AUR package), because I use Arch btw. At some point in the future I want to add support for other distros, but I also want to get everything functional on Arch first.
If anyone has any suggestions or anything:

I use so many open-source projects that I don't even know which one I use most.
Probably Linux or Git. I use Linux on all my own personal PCs. I use Git at home and at work. But there's also Firefox...11 -
It seems like now I can ssh into a Windows machine and use the glorious cmd!

Thinking about installing a Linux distro on my home computer as the second OS. Any recommendations on which distro to use? I'm not a total beginner, I just haven't used any desktop environments for Linux yet. I'm currently having a look at Arch + Budgie - any previous experiences?3
-
So I have to install chromium because line isn't available for linux...
Line is far east messaging/social app, and new customers use it.6 -
I've been a windows user for a long time now, but I've been thinking of trying out Linux sometime soon. Which distro should I start with? And can I still play steam/origin games? I might also use a VM to see how I like it before I move over.
I'm sure I could google this, but a lot of you seem to use Linux, and this isn't stack overflow so I'm not expecting too many people to shit on me for asking 🙂5 -
Hi! I want to switch to linux but i never used it before and i want advice from you guys about the OS (what distro should i use and how to get started).15
-
I hoped to be able to finally use “Linux” on my work computer thanks to WSL 2 but it turns out which is slow and I cannot pass its Internet connection trough our enterprise VPN, fuck it.1
-
Tl;Dr:
The new windows subsystem for Linux might severely slow compilation time for me.
Microsoft is releasing a preview of WSL 2 which works fundamentally different to WSL 1, which I currently use.
For those who don't know, WSL (or Windows Subsystem for Linux) used to be a compatibility layer, which "translated" Linux syscalls to Windows syscalls. This enables the execution of Linux applications on Windows. The new WSL (WSL 2) doesn't do any of that, instead, it is a highly optimised Virtual Machine.
So don't get me wrong from a performance point of view there is no Issue, RAM and CPU usage is truly astonishingly small and performance of Linux applications is much improved over WSL 1.
BUT, apparently, accessing files stored on Windows through Linux is now piss slow.
Great, truly outstanding.
Why is this a problem? Well, I use WSL to develop c++ Linux applications using CLion, the way this works is that you set up an ssh server in WSL, which CLion uses to do compilations.
One _needs_ to have the project files stored on Windows as otherwise CLion on Windows can't access them.
If I wanted a Linux VM I would have installed one.
Urgh.13 -
!rant, just looking for some input
I can't find a solution that I like for managing email/calendar in one whack for Linux. I use Debian, and am currently using Evolution mail client, but the calendar doesn't sync with my Exchange. I tried IceDove, but didn't love the mail (or calendar) client.
For my Linux brethren out there, what do you use to manage email/calendar? I've heard G-Suite used a lot, but I'd rather have native software than a dedicated browser window.
Thanks ahead of time.4 -
Why is there so much hate towards Manjaro Linux and so much love towards Antergos ? I mean, it's still Arch, right ?
It's just that Manjaro has its own repos but you can still use AUR.3 -
What keyboards do you use?
Well atm i use a cheap mechanic keyboard which i got since my last one died. I can afford a new one and looking for options. I prefer tenkeyless keyboards. What do you use? Mechanic? Slim? Anyone uses mac keyboard with linux? Any suggestions would be very helpful.5 -
Man i realy need to get of my windows host.
My productivity takes a nosedive whenever im on windows idk why.
I'd love to use linux fully but my fav game Overwatch has shit performance running on linux.
So the best solution would be to pass through my gpu to a windows vm for gaming.
But that would require a new gpu for the host system as the ryzen 7 1700 does not have a gpu.
I dont have any experience with passing thtough gpus. But could i make 2 vms that acces the same gpu, ofc not at the same time. So that i could have a gaming vm and maybe use another linux vm if i wanted to do something which profits off gpu acceleration.11 -
Question for those running Linux on a Dell XPS 13 with a 4k display. What distro do you use? I tried using Ubuntu 16 but had to uninstall it due to absolutely terrible battery life and heat.
Ive been doing fine using the Linux subsystem for windows, but I kinda wanted to give Linux another go and dual boot just for the heck of it.6 -

I want to use Linux again. I tried to use Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint 18 before but for some reason my Laptop gets frozen randomly (and I think the kernels used in these OS are somehow responsible for it, because it was all okay when the kernel version was 3.xx) and I didn't get any solution from Ubuntu Forums, so I gave up.
So any suggestions? Which distro should I use? I'd love an user friendly DE (Like XFCE or Cinnamon) and good software availability.
And my Laptop also has a Touchscreen. I'd like to utilise it if possible.
P.S. Please go easy on me. I'm still learning.24 -
I need to run a cloud Linux vm. My need is limited to running tomcat and about 10 web services- that's it. What I would like is an easy to use Linux flavor with a nice UI.
I need to know what cloud service and what flavor of Linux. And please don't get snotty with me because I have run massive applications on Solaris, AIX and HPUX - I am over doing things in a shell.2 -
!rant Planning on writing a document editor in Electron for linux as I believe the lack of these tools is why a lot of users dont use linux despite its awesomeness. Opinions ?5

Before installing Arch Linux, I failed to see why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
After installing Arch Linux, still have no idea why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
(Still using and loving it though, after 3+ months.)1 -
Use linux they said. It is stable they said.
I use a linux VM for managing DNS with BIND and configuration via WebMIN.
A minor webmin update : Sure, let’s click.
“Update failed. WebMIN requires UnZIP” Poof whole interface is down. Here we go for 30+ minutes of manual rolling back, installing unzip, retrying update. That shit only happens on linux.23 -
I could never ever use Linux as a main OS, but for development, hands down, it's the best for my needs.3

I used mint, Ubuntu,Kali but now I want to change my Linux flavour.
My work is mostly on backend development (PHP, MySQL).
Which one may I try next?
(All previous Linux are f9 for me I just want to use new distro)3 -
Though I don't use vim, but why all the hate when it is a widely used software?

Really i don't understand why everyone thinks linux is better... Windows now is way better than linux , if i work on aplatform i want it to be easy to use not that for Every fucking thing i have to use terminal , not that i can't have easy installati on for my programs ! Do you think linux is best but sorry guy ... You have to code more for linux , and build a better user friendly experience or linux will never be able to beat windows , and btw i Like linux but i prefer to be honest than laught on windows that is now best OS29

I just got a new laptop and wanted to dual boot Linux on it.
Everything seemed fine until I realized the laptop had UEFI. I always used easyBCD but this won't work sadly. MS blocked some features.
Any alternatives?
What boot loader do you guys use for dual booting Linux that works with UEFI?
Thanks in advance!14 -
Which Linux distribution is suitable for programming and development purposes?
I am going to use Linux for the first time. I usually worked on windows and macOS.11 -
Best Linux distro for a 2-in-1 laptop that I also want to use as a tablet? Are there any that can run Android apps natively (like ChromeOS but not ChromeOS because I also wanna do dev)?2

I use Windows for work and I’ve always used Linux for my home set up. Got a Mac a few months ago…..yeah I see it now….15

Im helping my brother build a pc, and i try to make him try a linux distro before he purchase windows, simply because i regret not doing so.
Now i got some thoughts going tho.. We both have/will have Ryzen 5 CPU and GTX 1060/70/80. Will there be any compatibility issues with some linux distros with that?
Iirc Nvidia cards had some minor issues on linux.
My brother will mainly use it for gaming on a serious level, and i use it for development and gaming for fun.
Also any distros you can recommend? I had a peek at Manjaro, it looked cool.11 -
Guys i installed Linux mint 22 with gnome on top of it in a Virtual Machine, I installed everything i use on a daily basis and configured all applications i use, then I did a TimeShift snapshot, then i got an idea which i want your advice about, I currently use Zorin 16 OS, if i did a TimeShift restore on my main machine based on the snapshot i took in the VM without doing a fresh install of Linux mint, would that work? Or it will simply keep Zorins files and adds up Linux mint files and make a conflict?

Hey guys, I'm planning to install a Linux in my machine. I have used Ubuntu, debian and fedora before. Which Linux distro would be best to use? I'll be using the environment for development. Looking for lightweight, fast Linux distro. Please suggest.17

I want to setup my pc with Linux/windows double boot but I don't have the slightest idea which distribution to use. I tried Ubuntu some years ago, but that just didn't seem to be my style.
What do you use and why?12 -
Some pigs just don't fly, even with sufficient thrust.
Been struggling for days trying to get my IntelliJ-on-Linux-VM setup running on Windows, and it's abysmally slow. Latencies for the UI are counted in seconds.
Screw it, I'm reinstalling my entire dev stack direct on Windows. I love Linux, but I will not use it when the price is that I cannot get anything done.8 -
I don't know why people are complaining about windows updates while they can stop the update service from service manager. I did that wile I was using windows.
Moral of the story: I use linux. 😜 -
So really there's no way to use unity on a high DPI monitor in Linux?
I can't believe this is still not implemented..2 -
As much as I love Linux, it just sucks to use its GUI for development.
Maybe I'm just using the wrong distro, anyone knows something better than Ubuntu for Web dev?12 -
Next year goals:
1. Learn how to use Macintosh.
2. Learn better Linux.
3. Finish an android app that I am too bored to finish.
4. Evolve social skills for Humans. -
Greetings guys and gals.
I found an old laptop of mine and since I don't really use it anymore, I want to try "the linux" on it.
My question is, what's a nice linux distribution to make the windows transition smoother.
I have a vps so I'm not afraid to use the terminal.
I just want vscode and a browser on it, no gaming, no video editing, nothing fancy.
Thanks12 -
Yo fellow devrant devs!
Are here any PLC devs present?
After 4 years of internal struggle, short side leaps and a big amount of feeling restricted and beeing tired of it, I decided to totally switch from windows to linux. No dual boot (which ended about 20times in "oh, i didnt start linux for 2 weeks.."), no "i can have Linux on VM". Just linux and me, hopefully a neverending love story.
Thats the theory.
Problem 1: is it somehow possible to use Siemens TIA portal with Linux in a proper way?
Problem 2: is there any IDE which is at least nearly as comfortable for c# coding as visual studio?2 -
What would be the best Linux distro for someone who's used Windows all his life? My friend has recently been getting super pissed about windows and it's land of a million updates so he wants to switch to Linux but doesn't know what distro to use. Personally I would recommend Ubuntu.2

Hey, anyone have experience with email with encryption?
I need to setup TLS for emails for all devices on premises. The printer and other devices does not support TLS.
I'm thinking i could use local exchange server that forwards to our office 365, as we use outlook for the domain. But i would rather use some linux solution.
We have multiple ip's we might send from.1 -
Hey guys. I use the build in terminal of linux and im really confident with it, but i believe there have to be better out there. Any suggestion?4

What OS does everyone use, and what kind of dev do you use it for?

Just realized I can't use my new Linux laptop for work because we use Xamarin. And there is no working version for Linux yet. Also no one knows when there will be one. Why support everything except for Linux?5

Windows or Linux?
It's a simple choice.
Window for personal computer (I wanna use visual studio and win apps and sometimes play games)
Linux for server (a 500m RAM Linux work better than 4g RAM window)14 -
I really like Linux but it makes me mad when apps I use, like Adobe XD, are available for everything but Linux.
I'm not even going to start with HBO not being able to load streams on Linux. I payed money to stare at a black screen.
I tried to use PlayOnLinux for Adobe Creative Cloud but XD doesn't even appear there.
I also hate dual booting because when I'm using Win or Linux for a bit I tend to make different desktops for different programs/IDEs/browsers and I like them to be open at all times for easy access when I want to do shit. Dual booting means having to open all this again
VMs are even worse in that they tend to be very slow and when I see choppiness when moving windows I immediately "nope" out of that shit
I can't put up with Windows's bs anymore, but not being able to use the software I need is even worse.
I don't know what to do2 -
Do you guys think it's worth it to learn how to use linux for fedora? I currently use Windows and I really want to get into node.js and want to start learning git as well. I'm still new to programming and haven't developed my own preference yet.1

I often have to use files on Linux, Mac OS and Windows. I've had multiple issues trying to swap files across the platforms. Is there a solution I can use to replace USB storage? A dedicated server or something?2

Did you ever use ZFS?
I want to build a linux-setup with some cool new stuff I didn't use so far and ZFS is among them.8 -
I installed arch on a 2012 MacBook pro today, that was fun, learned a lot more about Linux. Now, I don't know which DE to use.
I would use KDE, but last time I used it(recently) it reset the desktop configuration upon every boot, wiping panels and stuff. I'm sick of GNOME and Cinnamon, and XFCE is eh. Maybe i3?
Leave suggestions!1 -
Hi guys , i'm having a problem with kali linux on virtualbox, my pc doesn't have wifi built in so i am using a usb wifi adapter , but when i open kali linux i can't use wlan0 , only eth0, so does anyone know a solution to this ?9

I kind of feel like I type faster when I use Windows than Linux.
Don't know whether it is because I type code on Linux and !code on Windows1 -
In our Linux environment, we freeuently use a script called “shutdown.sh”. It wouldn’t be really problem if we didn’t have to switch to rootduring the execution. But damn it, it gives me heart attack when I use autocomplete and execute first thing.4
