"Is that a script or a hand job?"
A friend's colleague (who's pretty bad at English) that refers to manually typing in to the console as "a hand job".15 -
Lecturer: Unfortunately, you will have to manually write these 16 combinations in the program.
Me: *writes a script to generate the combinations*12 -
Forgot the password of the private key used to login to all my vpn servers.
Now I’ve got to generate a new one and deploy it everywhere again through this shitty control panel for every server fucking manually.

Just spent 30 minutes trying to work out why my page will not load a JavaScript file even though I could manually browse to the file:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/js" href="js/home.js" />
I then proceeded to take a 5 minute walk around the office and rethink my life decisions...5 -

“Your time zone is not my concern” - manager of the backend team
I asked if there’s another way for us to get test data into QA. That doesn’t involve us staying on until 9pm to get a backend dev to modify the db manually, everyday.6 -
A critical vulnerability was detected in Electron and I urge all the devRantron users to update their app manually.
Please go to https://www.devrantron.com get the latest version which has the necessary patches.
Due to a request, we added compact mode in the app, which can be used to view a distraction-free mode of the UI. Notifications screen is a little bit more readable now. The read notifications are now greyed out.
Again, the auto update will not work for this version. Please manually update as soon as possible.6 -
Update on my student job :
Today they put me on a new project.
Basically, I have to update a database of buildings owned or rented by the company. They provided me a lot of data including the address of each building but I need the GPS coordinates.
They wanted me to do it manually, copy pasting from Google maps (info: there's 75 buildings).
So I wrote a small script using an API to automate that, took me 20 minutes.
My colleagues were like "how the fuck is that possible ? We always do it manually, always takes ages !"7 -
Been coding for hours, trying to automate the processing of over 500 rows of data, I refuse to do that manually.
At least I have company7 -
Today in train programming:
Pushed a new build before pulling into station
Battery dies
Test on tablet
Build is broken, files missing
Upload files manually to Azure (WHY)
try to log in to my sure to treat, forgotten password
Try to reset password, smtp details in DB are wrong...
I'm doing well1 -
No boss... For the fucking millionth time: unit tests are not a waste of time.
You keep testing everything manually and hoping that you tested everything every time and praying that there are no bugs IS THE FUCKING TIME WASTE
My boss just can't fucking wrap his head around automated tests... I'm trying hard... Gonna try harder...6 -
So today, our "senior tester" logged a bug because he "Viewed Page Source" on the web based report he's testing and the Year values are hard coded! So 2017 will have to added manually!
I burst out laughing so hard, all my colleagues think I'm having a mental breakdown.2 -

I don't care what codestyle you want. I even can deal with codestyle I detest. (Looking at you, Vertical Alignment)
There is pretty much only one hard requirement:
It must be enforceable via autoformatting.
I won't manually edit a file because you have a preference.3 -
Am I the only one who will spend an hour to write a script that runs only once to save myself from entering in 20 minutes worth of data manually?6

While debugging some java code by our Senior Architect, I found this gem: 5000 padding done manually.

DEVS THAT MANUALLY UPDATE AUTOGENERATED CODE ARE THE WORST!!!!
Guess who has to clean up your mess? And be pinged about it later when another dev thinks they wrote the feature??
No, your hack wasn't cool.2 -

Ah, new feature submission to app store day.
- Tests passing = check!
- App built = check!
- App manually tested = check!
- App store content = check!

Ready to go baby!! -

I found an old project on which I hadn't version controlled, so I decided to manually commit progress on a past date. Only problem GitHub calendar wouldn't show it.
I emailed them and because it was private repo I added them as contributor. Then I got this reply.15 -
"iOS Development is easier"
Yeah, right? There's no dropdown, no checkbox, no radio button, no placeholder for multiline textfields, ...
Motherfck!
You have to manually do everything yourself and lay things out in their messy slow Xcode. Apple doesn't include important things only because they have randomly decided not to include them! Fuck this job.6 -
Got moved to testing last week, (due to lack of testers) being a developer it requires a whole different mind set to test !!!
But running selenium scripts and again verifying manually sucks.
But what hurts the most is rejecting something that you approved during peer review 😱🤭3 -
Yuppie clients are utter cancer. You treat me like garbage, stress me the fuck out with constant calls and changes, and force me to deploy manually on a f*cking friday. Your site deserves to be broken. You deserve to be angry. I enjoy your business suffering, you yuppie ass money brabbing retardotron.

I can't believe how difficult it is to convince people in a *tech* company to automate things.
"oh yeah it's only a couple of times a year. How much work is it gonna take to automate it, it'll take us only a few minutes to do manually"
That's how you get stuck in the past.7 -
So you want full stack engineers to: design, do UX, create front end, build backend and deploy it in your mono repo stupid manual deployment "kubernetes cluster", add monitoring alerting manually, review others PR, QA our own apps and features, manually sync to Production, use VPN otherwise we cannot connect to anything, 2factor auth, do SRE, architecture diagrams, demo, run agile ceremonies, and learn a legacy coding language which was never mentioned in the job description. Did I miss anything?7

Porting Java Code to Kotlin manually, just to get a better understanding of the language. Best thing so far, NO more Assertive Exception Handling.
Damnit Java, I know it for a fact that the damned thing won't throw an exception! There's Careful and Paranoid. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE5 -
Let's talk about input forms.
Please don't do that!
Setting time with the arrow buttons in the UI.
Each time change causes the page to re-fetch all the records. This is fetching, parsing, rendering tens of thousands of entries on every single click. And I want to set a very specific time, so there's gonna be a lot of gigs of traffic wasted for /dev/null.
Do I hear you say "just type the date manually you dumbass!"? I would indeed be a dumbass if I didn't try that. You know what? Typing the date in manually does nothing. Apparently, the handler is not triggered if I type it in manually/remove the focus/hit enter/try to jump on 1 leg/draw a blue triangle in my notebook/pray3 -

There's only one model. The user model, wich is preinstalled. But the database has many tables. All queries are generated manually. Within the "mainController".

Internship Company employee: Hey, we need 600 images uploaded to a wordpress site, you'll have to do that for me.
Me: Alrightyy, can you give me some FTP or SSH access or something?
Employee: Nope, not allowed to.
Me: Uhm, I could write a shell script and run it?
Employee: The server is windows....
Me: Mother of god, I'll have to do it manually then?
Employee: You could ask John (my technical guider, not his real name) if you can borrow some fellow interns!
Me: *walks to John* Hey man, can I borrow some interns?
John: What for?
Me: Manually uploading 600 images to posts :).
Interns: *looking at me with a deadly view*
John: Sure!

Why in the fucking world did I decide to manually use @media screen in CSS instead of Bootstrap, I'm down to 212px wide screen now just because I can't stand that SOMEBODY might have a bloody screen that size.9

When someone decides to manually delete a user from a relational database that relies on that user to exist and expects everything to work out perfectly.2

it's not even worth fixing all the errors,

I delete all the bookmarks manually thinking that I will get rid of the bar, but instead I was left with this!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!! 😡9

Instead of worrying about API rate limits I made my code manually parse the html from a website.

FUCK U GOOGLE PHOTOS, I MANUALLY UPLOAD PHOTOS FROM THE APP AND THEN DELETE ONE FROM THE WEB APP FROM MY PC BECAUSE I DIDNT WANT THAT ONE UPLOADED.....

This is taking a while.... i wonder if i have enough disk space.....11 -
This stupid fucker of my senior writes code directly in server. Whenever I give my branch name to merge and deploy, he types code manually again in the server. This introduced a bug and I had to fix it in server again.3

I love when this happens to me.
1. Restarts manually the webserver.
2. 5 seconds later, i try to reach one of the websites and i am surprised of the 'the site is down' error and begin to investigate the reason.
3. 30 seconds later: "oh im stupid".4 -

Going through a WordPress site that hasn't been updated in over a year. It's so severely infected that even the Wordfence and Security plugins say it's fine. So I'm going through the file structure manually.
File by file, folder by folder manually searching for infected files. This is the most tedious thing I've had to do. But I'm learning some really interesting tips. One file looked empty and I almost missed it because the code had been tabbed over a few hundred times clearing it way off the the right of the screen.10 -
Wrote a small code to test my "Reset Password" feature, service console kept printing: User not found and returns 404
I was 100% I added that user manually to the database....
Well it turned out I added that user to the wrong database. I need to sleep T_T -
I broke the system!

Me: you probably shouldn’t use an IDE, you would learn a lot more about the language if you did things manually.
JavaFriend: Nah I’m all good
Me: alright you do you
4 years LATER
Me: *gets text* oh it’s from JavaFriend. *opens text*
JavaFriend: “dude so I decided to stop using my IDE’s and start doing things manually and I’m learning so much”
Me: ...
Me: I know. I’ve been doing it like this for a reason.
I know IDEs are helpful and good to use but personally I like to work without them and I feel it helps you learn the language more of you go without it.
If you have opinions on the topic in general lemme know.26 -
I'm preparing a major deployment & what do I see?

Unit testing is cool and all, but FFS...
If you want unit test - cool. But its not drop-in replacement for functional testing!
I believe each release should be manually tested.9 -
God I love being able to use MathJax on GitHub, despite it being quite a pain to get it perfect.
https://github.com/OpenlyEducated/...

Also the bug that broke all inline mathjax for a week wasn't exactly helpful..1 -

Linux users, do you admin your server manually or do you use any web interface tool? After getting the third server of the day running I think I need a tool to make the work faster. Do you have any recommendation? Cpanel ist pretty neat but sadly not free10

Turns out deleting a git branch also deletes your unchanged changes fuckkkkk
Well as good a time as any to learn how to use 'git fsck' and manually sort through hundreds of dangling blobs

Why I hate typescript. Bored during quarantine so thought I rant a little more about this.
1. Compilation time, typescript increases project compilation time from 1 second to 3-4 seconds, which is basically triple or quadruple the time if you don't know math.
2. You write a minimum of 30% more code.
3. Many libraries are not written in TS by default, which means you end up having to manually install a fuckton of @types/(pckg name) manually which is incredibly shit.
4. Typescript is an absolute pain in the ass when using dynamic libraries. Plus when it works, it usually ends up finding maybe 1-2 errors in your code MAX, completely not worth it.
5.JSDoc is 100 times better. (Still don't use it though).
6. I actually enjoy loosely typed languages, having your compiler being smart enough to tell what the type of your input is is much better than it assuming you're a fucking retard so it forces you to manually type everything.
P.S if you hate loosely typed languages, kindly resort to Angular, C#, Java or whatever and leave JS alone, cunt.41 -
I put together my first custom computer, was too cheap to buy a case for it, at the end I realized the "power button" is on the case itself!! Anyone else turn on a computer by manually using a metal object to connect the power pins :/2

So... My boss is "hard working", meaning that she'd rather edit and upload a html file every morning at 5am for the last 5 years and manually send a push notification notifying the user that the new file is up than learning a little bit about automation (cron? IFTTT?) and even after letting her know about those options she has "no time"
She'd rather keep source code (pug, sass), manually build on local computer and upload to live servers instead of learning git and letting me setup once and for all CI/CD
SERIOUSLY!?!? NO TIME!?!? But there's time to do things at a turtle pace like in the 90s... 🤦♂️5 -
Designers! Argh. I’ve been busy with a form for over two days and STILL it isnt good enough. I told everybody this CMS is a pain the ass and every element has to be positioned manually.
THAT YOUR FUCKING CHECKBOX ISNT LIKE YOUR PSD ISNT MY PROBLEM.
PLEASE THROW YOURSELF OFF A BUILDING?! -
New team, same discussions...
* Why should we use cmake? It is way better to add visual studio project files to the repository and allow everyone to mess around in the compiler setting dialogs. Nobody needs cmake if not targeting multiple platforms!
* clang-format? What kind of black magic is this? It is way better to manually try to stick with each source file's existing formatting - regardless of how messed up it is - and manually check that from time to time!
* Why should we use the latest visual studio 2019 compiler, if 2017 and 2015 do just fine? This way we can save license fees!
/irony off
Just to mention a few highlights...13 -

OMG. Just had the worst convo with my supervisor. She's a dev and she does not understand why scalability is important.
We have a really bad client who has a fucking insane amount of pages and they want to change some stuff on a few and my supervisor just said manually add it in with if satements.
I replied saying this client will want more things changed let me take the extra hlaf hour to make it scalable.
She responded no just do manually.
I wanted to get in to rant about how scalability is important but it was the end of the day and I was to tired.4 -

When will I learn that some defaults should be explicitly set.... *sigh*
At least Proxmox has an REST API to change the default value of aio=uring to aio=native....
Otherwise I'd have to update a few hundred VMs manually. :( -

this is how our upgrade from mongoose v5 to v6 went

Rant at myself for being a moron.

Lesson learned: need to backup databases more regularly. Any good tools?3 -
My dad asked a facebook group for help decoding a calibration script I wrote for the new 3D printer, instead of just asking me, and every single person yelled at him that "oh that's so dangerous if you didn't write it yourself don't run it, if you can't manually write gcode sell your printer" etc.
why are these groups always full of degenerate assholes? (and why do they legitimately think calibrating a printer has to be done by manually writing bits to the EEPROM with a needle, or it's not worth having a printer?)4 -
shutdown an old Jenkins CI pipeline from one of our teams... after one month they call us to bring it online again because they don't know how to build it manually.... lol #automation #scripting #jenkins2

I just joined a new company.
Their CI pipeline is to give root access to staging and prod servers to every developer in the company and the manually git pull each repository (8-10 repos per server) and manually set nginx and port configurations. And if this wasn't enough, all of the 30 sites they have are basically the same site and they make the changes manually for each tenant (no env file). I'm amazed at how hard some people are willing to work.5 -

PHP code that didn't use sanitize, but manually checked if strings contained ' or ". Not even in a function, but manually implemented whenever the person writing that burning dumpsterfire thought it was a good idea to check for that.
Code also didn't report, it just exited without error code. Users would just get a white screen if that spaghetti code "security" system got tripped. -
Not leaning on unit tests. I usually write them after testing my code manually, and lose time for testing feature by hand.1

Client: Why was the payment applied to the May invoice?
Me: Because that is the only open bill.
Client: We want to apply it to the July invoice.

Client: ...can you manually correct this?

Anyone who formats their code manually is a fuck there I said it.
Also stop using a tool that has no contextual understanding of your code. You're wasting more so much fucking time trying to guess shit that an ide would automatically know and doing stuff that an ide would automatically do.4 -
Tried to install WAMP manually to learn PHP. It almost put me off development altogether, but great when it worked and I learnt a lot doing it. The next time I used Xampp before moving on to vagrant & VMs.

Last day at work: goodbye overnight sessions breeding over some arcane legacy code that blew up in prod or manually restoring dozens of backups because the customer continued to work while systems went down due to power failure.

Build pipelines are awesome. What's not awesome is forgetting the 'pipeline' bit.
Sure, let's have each TeamCity job in the 'pipeline' build the deployable from different places! You must manually merge your code from dev to test to release.
What's that? The functionality working in dev isn't there in production? I wonder how that happened. -
So there are a few bugs with IDEA and qwertz keyboards, namely there are combos on @ { < keys (you know, not that i would use those in java). After setting it to qwerty, manually deleting every shortcut and restarting the whole damn universe, still nothing. Very useful, 10/10, would use again.

That's it. Fuck the docs. I'm going hardcore now: hooking up a debugger and diving into the unseen depths of Spring's automatic JPA repo initialization.
Unless any one of you knows how to
1. Manually create jpa repo interface bean
2. Make transactions work [also enable them manually by declaring beans in @Configuration]
and do all this in a single @Bean method. Jpa provider - hibernate.
Nobody? Not a single one? Allright then, I'm going in :(1 -

Every. Single. Time. I've tried to learn and implement proper Unit/Instrumentation testing, the main Android devs decide to go for something else or introduce some feature or Gradle plugin that breaks every tutorial out there. Me: are you done merging the remaining branches into master?
Colleague: no, I'm still merging the changes manually.

Me: but how? It will just conflict and you can keep whichever changes YOU WANT. You can even edit before committing the merge.
Colleague: I'm just redoing the changes manually anyway.

Spent a month touching up photos manually from DNG and now finally Exported them to JPG... most look really bad even though they look really nice in LR...
Just reset all of the adjustments and told LR to auto edit all of them... they look a lot nicer after exporting....
So it seems the correct process is now:
1. Auto correct (but leave white balancing)
2. Export

So, I recently started a new job as a "general" IT tech for someone my dad knows. He does insurance billing and everything is done manually (manually copying from pdfs to excel sheets, etc). A couple of weeks ago, I started developing a custom suite of software for automation of some parts of the processes + integration with the task management software we use. At this point, I feel like my boss is turning into a client. Is this a common occurrence? BTW, it's a small company (5 employees including him) and I'm the only person who does tech around here.1

I'm trying to stand up a docker container to read a storage queue with dotnet and invoke ffmpeg to convert some videos. For a whole day I fought with this wrapper (FFMpegCore) which kept throwing file not found errors on the ffmpeg binary itself. Locally (windows) it worked fine.
I spent a ton of time trying to install the Debian package, trying to add it to the path manually, trying to just use the wrapper just to generate the arguments I wanted (I'm not an ffmpeg pro, so the fluent API the wrapper has is super useful) and running it manually, nothing worked. Finally, I realized it wasn't getting to the part where I ran it manually: just using the fluent API to get the arguments was invoking ffmpeg and throwing.
I took away the wrapper completely, start ffmpeg manually and it works...

I gues devrant android app got an update recently [last week?]? Notifications suddenly started to work. Yayy!
But in-app notifications broke. More often than not either tab in notifs [all, ++, comments, etc.] loads nothing and there's no way to re-fetch data manually. If _all_ breaks I have to browse each category manually to see what's new.

Finding weird stuff that previous devs have done #302:

mobile browsers not refreshing stylesheets.
this is the worst thing that mankind ever did. I mean, when you are trying to design a website and the changes you make to the css are not loaded by the browser, you have no clue wtf is going on. There is no way to make the browser refresh the stylesheet. Reloading, entering the url manually, reopening the tab, restarting the browser, nothing works. The only fix is to manually clear the app's cache in android settings.
The strange thing here is that at first the stylesheet gets refreshed like it should, but after some time the cache seems to be capped and it wont load sh*t...
This is soooo frustrating :(((3 -

Anonymous functions in PHP can be quite verbose, even when they only perform a simple operation. Partly this is due to a large amount of syntactic boilerplate, and party due to the need to manually import used variables. This makes code using simple closures hard to read and understand.

It's been some months and I've been working with data, I'm in charge of the data migration and after 4 months into the job, they tell me that the data is sometimes transformed but they do not have a tool to validate the data, instead they do it manually.
When I said, that if we do it manually, it'll be prone to human error. My team says that humans make errors.
They're basically checking 2 rows of the database manually and then pray. That's their way of testing/validating the data.
Couple years back when I was in college, we used to talk about code quality or whatever but I don't think that's followed anywhere.
