HR Lady: we saw your profile and we think it fits what we're looking for, I just need to know what you use for front-end programming
Me: I use ReactJs, AngularJs and for backend NodeJs
HR Lady: Hmm, so you don't use Javascript
Me: ... (unhandled exception in my head)
Me: M'am everything I mentioned is using Javascript
HR Lady: oh! ok.9 -
Learnt Murphy's law the hard way,
Don't use your office laptop to create a personal auto porn downloading project specially when your boss suddenly wants to use your laptop to do a product demo to client.
Now looking for a new job, let me know if anyone need a smart developer who loves solving problems like the one mentioned above.26 -
Client: Urgent! App is crashing!
Me inside: Wtf, Crashlytics didn’t send me anything, it betrayed me...
Me: What’s wrong?
Client: Some random user sent me email that app is crashing SOMEWHERE(!?)
Me: ................................... no problem, I’m working on it.
*Tomorrow*
Me: Fixed, everything works fine now (didn’t do anything actually)
Client: Great, nice work!
Client never mentioned that “problem “ anymore.
#likeaboss4 -
Boss be like:
Me: Hello Boss I will be unable to come to work tomorrow, due to heavy rains.I am literally living on an island now.
Boss: In your job application you mentioned swimming as your hobby.
See you at work @7am....1 -
Have to share some pillow talk with the wife last night - somehow got onto the subject of washing machines. Mentioned that most washing machines run on something like Java, she disagreed and said they run on buttons. BUTTONS!!
Told her I would be putting this on devrant.7 -
The face of a developer when he makes the similar UI as mentioned in the png file given by designer and the designer points out some minor spacing issue15

Demoing a new feature in the Dev environment.
Me: The images are just placeholders. The communications team are still coming up with appropriate images.
Management: Can we change that image? It doesn't really fit the theme of what we are trying to achieve.
Me: As mentioned earlier, all images are just placeholders. Continues demo.
Management: That image also doesn't really fit with the theme. Can we change that one too?
Me: 🙄6 -
Since no one has mentioned it - Happy birthday, Linux.
And thank you, who goes through fire and water debugging this enormous creature (this could've been worse, right?) -
Sometimes it just feels really good to see recruiters getting burned. A stupid one recently posted:
"When you find the candidate that has 15 years of experience in AWS, has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, speaks 6 languages and is under budget... "
The comments immediately mentioned that AWS was formed 12 years ago.
Haha, what a stupid fuck!5 -
As most of you already know, the mentioned users in a rant don't receive a notification so you have to mention them again in a comment.
After a suggestion of @Cozyplanes I decided to implement a feature that make this automatic.
Just check the box and forget about it.
It will be available soon in the next update of devRant unofficial UWP!7 -
Client: I need this very complex feature
Dev : Ok, give me approx 2 weeks, this is new to me, have to do r&d.
Client: I can't give you 2 weeks, you have 2 days.
Dev: Somehow manages to complete in 2 days.
After few weeks.
Client's representative : What's the progress on the new features?
Dev: You haven't mentioned any new features yet.
Client's representative: I don't care, it's been weeks now, here are more complex features, I need them tomorrow.
😕12 -
Boss hands over to me an old security audit report and tells me "Go through this and check if all the problems mentioned have been resolved". Quick glance through the report shows all expected issues - SQLi, plaintext transmission and storage etc. I tell him that I need access to the application both from admin and a user with restricted privileges.
He hands me the admin credentials and tells me, "After you login in, just go the "Users" tab. You'll find the profiles of all the users there. You can get the emails and passwords of any user you want from there."
I had to hold back a chuckle. There's nothing to verify. If they haven't resolved storing plain text passwords in the database (AND displaying it IN PLAIN TEXT in the website itself (which to my surprise wasn't mentioned in the audit)), they probably haven't even looked at the report.2 -
10k achieved!!! Say hello to my new tiger :D
Only 3 weeks ago I rejoined here and at the time I kinda snarkily mentioned how I would get back to my previous 26k no problem - of course I thought that it'd take another year.. yet it didn't. This platform and its members and most importantly you are amazing!! ♥️12 -
Some guy analyzed all the books mentioned on Stack Overflow and sorted them by popularity...
http://www.dev-books.com/3 -
I had enough of these "Recruiters" bugging me and decided to reply
Fucking take a minute read the god-damn description of the profile to see if they have those skills mentioned at-least24 -
Drop brother off at a new years party, where he will be until sunrise partying with friends.
Me: Have fun!
Me: *drives back home, grabs laptop and opens up IntelliJ*
Me: Let the finger dance begin!
Have I mentioned I hate parties?4 -
I dont know if this has already been mentioned but I love how the tiny dog costs a little more ++ that all the others 😁7
-
IMO, salary range must be mentioned with job descriptions!
A candidate investing so much time & efforts to pass through the entire interview process only to know that their compensation will be lesser than what they're currently paid is very frustrating.11 -
That just takes the damn fun out of it.
"In Python, we don't actually use commas unlike many languages. And as I mentioned last time, a tuple is a lot like a list, but it has it's differences. Oh yeeeah! Did I mention the logic behind if/else if/ and else statements?? They're sooo amazing."13 -
WTF!! I want a JavaScript solution.. not jQuery!! When JavaScript mentioned in the question, why the hell people answer with jQuery solution and also same solution multiple times.15
-
I just love articles like "Moving from Go to Node.js"
2 completely different topics and different use cases and can't and should not be mentioned together10 -
Recruiter: Hey! I found your CV and think you'd be great for this position.
Me: You clearly haven't read my CV. I don't know, nor have ever worked with anything you've mentioned. Why are you wasting my time? -
On my linkedin profile it is clearly mentioned that I am a Java developer.
Recruiter: Hey, I want to offer you a super cool PHP job position.
Me: But I haven’t mentioned anywhere that I am familiar with PHP.
Recruiter: Yeah, I know, but I thought you may want to switch to PHP for a while.
Me: o_O. Fuck you, miss. I do not switch programming languages like I change my socks. Who the fuck teaches you these approaches?11 -
Every fucking time, I apply for a role that suits, NOT SOME SUPER SENIOR ROLE THAT REQUIRES HUGE FUCKING EXPERIENCE, I get an email "After careful consideration, we've decided not to move on" BITCH YOU HAVENT EVEN MENTIONED WHAT YOU HAVE "CAREFULLY" CONSIDERED, I HAVENT APPLIED FOR SOME SPECIAL SPACE SCIENTIST POSITION YA CUNT.10
-
My project manager posted in linkedin 'When I die,I want my developers to carry my coffin so that they can put me down one last time"
I commented on that post
"For the first time ,you have mentioned the requirements clearly".1 -
* Initial Interview*
HR: We do offer remote job, lots of benefits and annual increase of salary.
Supervisor: "Oh... Those things HR mentioned? That's just a lie. We're just complying on the government requirements"6 -
@dfox I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but...
Feature request: Autocomplete suggestions for user-name mentions when we type @. Shouldn't take long, right?😋😋10 -
Saw a non techy friend using duckduckgo today. Asked him why. He told that several months back, I was ranting about Google and had mentioned ddg, and he was using it ever since. Feels good.2
-
I applied for Software Devloper position but was called in for interview for Systems Analyst (IT). Nothing to do with coding. When I mentioned that I applied for Software Developer role, I was told that there is no vacancy for that role then why the fuck did you advertised and fuck the fuck did I apply.
Fuck5 -
A wild Devrant bot has appeared!
Tired of forgetting about a rant? Don't worry, RemindMe is here!
How to use it?

RemindMe will remind you about the rant you mentioned it on after the time you specified

@dfox can you please implement a gang feature? Someone assigns an hashtag to some people and everytime this hashtag is called, the team members get a notif.
Adittionally, maybe you could add gang stats (how many new rants, how many times the hastag was mentioned etc...)36 -
Dear Android studio,
When u require an update please tell me u require an update.Do not pretend u can't open jdk folder or shit like that ...you could find jdk yesterday u can now

Photographer gave me a bigger discount (per his boss' orders) because I showed him free/inexpensive certificate options.
Thanks to all on here who have mentioned that; wouldn't have remembered about free options without others who think in terms of security. -
Earlier i ranted about how someone hacked our site and he had our source code.
Now finally we found how was our site code stolen, thanks to @dfox he mentioned how can we pull code from got server at that time I checked trying commamds to dowload git folder but it was secure but later we found that we had another subdomain running for pur project and its git folder was not secured16 -
So, tonight I didn't really have much planned (I found out) so when I mentioned a side-remark my boss was quick to suggest an evening phone meeting, which I couldn't turn down...
So tonight we've cleaned and archived in our repositories, weeded out teams, member permissions, and such...
The thing is; I like my boss and he's much more of a friend, so when I mentioned that a cleaning would be good, he suggested to do it over a glass or two of something good :)
We ended up spending an hour or two getting a lot closer to the bottom of things — beer in hand and laughs in the air :)6 -
I accidentally posted a Photoshopped image of my boss in her teams channel. I deleted it immediately, but I believe she saw it briefly. She never mentioned it, but things have been awkward ever since.9
-
*In Demo*
That's great but you know what would be really cool? If you changed the functionally to something I never mentioned before1 -
So you want full stack engineers to: design, do UX, create front end, build backend and deploy it in your mono repo stupid manual deployment "kubernetes cluster", add monitoring alerting manually, review others PR, QA our own apps and features, manually sync to Production, use VPN otherwise we cannot connect to anything, 2factor auth, do SRE, architecture diagrams, demo, run agile ceremonies, and learn a legacy coding language which was never mentioned in the job description. Did I miss anything?7
-
Hi android devs!
As i mentioned in some of my prev questions, i'm trying to visualize a sound file using graphview.
Now the question is:
I need some kind of indicative to show the current frame while playing the sound.
Thanks aloooot!2 -
Once during a standup, I mentioned that I needed to fix some unit tests before the build would be ready. Our tester then said "no time for tests, we need the build now". That was a dark day.
-
An old favorite that came to mind when someone mentioned C in the recent void post.
On a semi-related note, are there any modern languages that *aren’t* C-based?7 -
Boss: "wow how it happened it's already November? Well, here is this project that we supposed to end on October that I didn't mentioned yet, sorry I was sure last month was September. Don't make any plans for next few weekends, ok?"6
-
How often do women bring up their own gender in tech interviews? I've never done it, and I've never interviewed anyone, but I'm curious about whether it's ever explicitly mentioned (beyond a, "I'm in a women in tech group" or "I mentor young girls in my free time").
I don't want to start any debates. Just curious about what people on the Other Side of the Table see.20 -
Today in a meeting, a non-dev analyst who frequently uses SQL mentioned in passing that he uses Excel as a text editor for his SQL code. I don't know what he said after that because I wasn't able to get past the fact that Excel is his go to text editor.6
-
I met a programmer in an online dating app some months ago. She worked with golang, and things were going nicely with us talking a bit.
Then I mentioned that I currently work with Typescript and NodeJS and she stopped responding 😞
Should have posted this as story, since this is not actually a joke.10 -
The more time I get to play with Flutter, the more I am enjoying it. Google mentioned in their Udacity course that the best way to learn is to try and build an app that you use daily. So, I spent my Sunday building a UI clone of Facebook.
Are you also trying Flutter? What are your views?9 -
Ok this is fucking freaky!!
I was talking to my girl that she mentioned a song on a phone call today and I was listening to YouTube and all of a sudden the same song she mentioned came up which is an old out of my regular genres.
I freaked out and told her that's why I have fucking privacy issues!
And then I suggested making myself a private chatting app...
Her next sentence was:
"Yes you can baby... Basically the world is your app store!" <- her first coders quote (we are contagious)3 -
Have I ever mentioned how much TypeScript compensates for JavaScript's Lack of being statically typed?
It's. So. Much. Better.8 -
Just received a test for a job I'm interviewing for. I was interviewing for a C++ position. Practice test: Create an REST API using SpringBoot, Spring Data, document with Swagger and implement continuous integration testing.
To be fair, I also mentioned I'm fluent in Java. But I've never touched SpringBoot or done any backend webdev, since my intention was to never get near it.
Deadline: Sunday. Game on...4 -
Anders Hejlsberg
The man who designed C# 🤘
I don't think I've seen him mentioned around here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...8 -
Just started a new job yesterday in Software Config. I mentioned automating something that could be easily automated, and my coworker looked up and said "You're trying to automate 80% of my job. Stop."... This is my life now.4
-
Today I got called by a someone saying something about my internet but I couldn't actually hear him against the background noise...
I think he mentioned something about having downloaded my internet onto their servers...?7 -
1. No paper-pen exams asking defination of OOPs.
2. Introduction of VCS (e.g. GitHub, SVN, etc.)
3. Introduction of new programmimg languages in the curriculum.(Pls stop with C/C++...there are 1000s of tutorial for that)
4. Give access to licensed software. (Especially in India we were forced to use cracked softwares).
There is a lot to change. But i think mentioned all the important stuff.5 -
A client is like: Help! We got a 500 in our wordpress administration panel and there is no error in the log, it must be your infrastructure at fault!
So I calmly replied to them that wordpress handles its errors on its own, and without the appropriate debug flags enabled, doesn't log it anywhere. Even mentioned that a PHP app can change the error handler no problem, and linked them to both, PHP and Word press docummentation.
Didn't hear from them since.2 -
So I mentioned before that I managed to beat the ATS system for one job posting and got an immediate interview invite.
They one upped me by sending me to a video interview with an AI. It's supposed to analyze my facial expressions and determine if I'm worthy of being hired.
Got a rejection email just now.
So after all that hard work, looks like Skynet didn't like me very much 😛.6 -
Customer: as soon as you get a proof of concept could you send it to me?
Me: sure *sends app to test* here is what it currently does and does not do.
Customer: thanks, here is a list of 59284 things that dont work or need changed.
No shit sherlock. It's not done, you wanted a very early version, and of the things you listed I already mentioned half of those.6 -
I mentioned earlier that I did well in a tech screen. It was 2.5 hours long.... Now they want me to do another 2 hour interview. How am I supposed to find a job while working without getting fired? ? ?2
-
In a meeting with customers to agree on the scope of a new project...
Me: "Hey, we could do this awesome thing that will save you a lot of time that nobody's brought up or mentioned and will take us an extra 4 weeks to implement."
Horrible, but it's my way of training my PMs to leave me out of meetings.3 -
It is fucking written in rules that SLA would be given post the discussion.
AFTER THE MOTHERFUCKING DISCUSSION.
Bitch can't read a simple English statement.
And in the SLA column, it is clearly mentioned that one must state the DATE. This idiot mentions the entire fucking Quarter.
How fucking dumb you can be to not read the basics mentioned for your own and others ease of functioning.
Indians are illiterate morons. I apologise to the entire world today on behalf of these fragmented cauliflowers.
To whoever this means, I am sorry that you have to deal with these retarded brains.
Also, the task was supposed to be done by others and not the blabbering bitch. She takes up random unwated shit and then cribs to our manager that she is overloaded and Floyd isn't helping.
When I help, she complains that I am overstepping.
Go fuck yourself you mongoose.9 -
Guy at school
"I could do that... OR I could do it... in C#HNNNNNNNNGH"
Yeah, we get it. You like C#. Hooray for you. Please stop cumming every time it's mentioned.10 -

Sorry creators, but..... (silence, drops mic)1 -
Note to self:
Fifty shades of gray is not about CSS or any other subject you care about. Delete mental association so as not to react like Pavlov's dog every time you hear/see title mentioned in mass media.

'Someone mentioned you in a comment' notification on devRant.
Can't resist checking it.
So what is everyone's favourite notification on here?12 -
I mentioned on a cv about 10 years ago that I had maintained a website built on php. This CV is no longer in circulation and hasn't been for about 9.5 years, I'm still getting message from recruiters about php roles
Fml3 -
Ran Windows RAM diagnostic tools because I was too lazy to get my Linux USB-stick. Ran for 20 minutes, restarted - "There are hardware problems present."
NO SHIT. No info how many errors, no log file mentioned, no code or anything. Something happened. How retarded can a diagnostic tool be?
Guess laziness gets you punished immediately...1 -
So after someone mentioned Haskell in a post, I googled it and started some kind of tutorial.
It's fun!4 -
Only way to stay sane as a developer reading emails:
1.) Open email
2.) Scan quickly for your name on the body of the massage
3.) If your name isn't mentioned, then close with joy.
4.) If your name is mentioned (FML), then read sort of....see what's the deal and if the email body doesn't end in a question mark, then close email and play dumb.
5.) Else, respond to the fucking email.2 -
"We have a nice documentation you can use to get this up and running"
>half the bloody variables used in said documentation are never even mentioned how they are defined
Nice. -
Raise, zero releases on weekend, not mentioning for once that ChatGPT/Bard said this or that ...etc
I swear once ChatGPT gave my boss the exact opposite of what is mentioned in the documentation and I had to literally share the link of the docs so that boss believe me ... -
WOOOP-DE-FUCKING-DO I HATE MY ISP (well actually the company which is reliable for the cable networks which lead to my/our new home).
WhAtEvErYoUmEaN and I moved yesterday to a new flat. Not spectacular at all except that mentioned company cancelled the appointment ON THE SAME FUCKING DAY! "We're so sorry. No internet until Thursday. At least"
Dickheads.
Well, so we are here in the middle of nowhere without internet. Time for old school books i guess😅6 -
The "New comments on a rant you commented on" notification really shouldn't come up if the one new comment posted mentions you, since you get a "x mentioned you in a comment!" notification too.3
-
My girlfriend seemed offended when I mentioned that I use pi-day as a memory rule for her birthday.
I always thought any way to make one remember such days better would be good…1 -
My favorite quote from an article (jokingly) poking fun at React:
"I mentioned to a junior developer that his return function was getting a little unsightly with the lengthy JSX that he’d put in his render function. He told me, “Oh it’s cool. I’ll break it out into several functions that return JSX.”
I pushed him into a volcano.
The gods smiled upon us and we had rain." -
Guys, check your tags before posting on weekly rants. There are a few of you still posting under previous week's tag. The question and the answer don't match. 😛
Also, I think I just scared someone off because I mentioned the wrong tag. 😬9 -
I checked out a Facebook profile of a stud guy. He mentioned his nickname as heart hacker... I died.6
-
I think I just gave my teammates/boss another mind-blowing idea...
Daily stand-ups are usually done standing up... Which means away from computers... And therefore JIRAs should not be mentioned, at least not by ID...
WHO THE FUCK CAN REMEMBER THEIR ISSUE IDS ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE'S...11 -
I am happy about a lot of code i have written but most recently speaking, the fuck you github page mentioned in https://devrant.com/rants/4934026/...1
-
Just finished and published iOS and Android app. Now they want to change some colors in the app theme. Never mentioned it once during weekly meetings about the app. Even tho I asked them for input. Now I have to spend half my day recompiling and making new screenshots for the store.... #fucklogic1

So we were talking with colleagues about the way french people pronounce the English "th" sound. When someone mentioned the example of "Darth Vader" (pronounced like "Dart" by some people), we imagined his choking gesture to actually be a dart throw.
This was my inspiration for this wallpaper. -
So was just reading this article about Chinese people becoming more lonely and it mentioned Xiao Ice which is pretty much like Google's... What's her name?
It said how people can talk to it like an actual person so I gave it a try... Well it's just as dumb as the others...
https://ozy.com/fast-forward/...4 -
Don't remember who but someone here told me once, when I mentioned that I do java now, "wait till you get to reflection..."
Well it's time to suffer5 -
Just in case nobody mentioned it:
Humble Bundle : Machine Learning
https://humblebundle.com/books/...
and
Humble Bundle : UI UX

So that network decom I mentioned in my last rant... Instantly beneficial. Got some dope server equipment for free. Dual Xeons, 4C/8T 2.93 GHz, 128GB RAM, Dell mobo, yeah. Oh, and a currently nonworking C64 that I'm gonna fix up! WOO!
-
Been playing Skyrim a lot lately. "research" I guess. So any abbreviations and the like I think of TES or Skyrim related lore. I saw a post on devrant earlier that mentioned DB. My first thought was Dark Brotherhood. So this meme was born:2
-
can you solve the issue in production mentioned in this slack channel you don't have access to and we're not going to grant you access to?3
-
I'm not a dev, but I visit this site due to its overwhelming sanity. That said, I have two bests:
First: Never thought I'd say it, but having Windows as opposed to Mac has continued to keep me from going batshit cray. I liken my relationship with Mac to a marriage that started out wonderfully and wound up in a field of acrimony, broken promises, and literal hatred.
Second: This site, as mentioned above.7 -
After ten hours of programming work, what could be more relaxing than watching a stream about programming?
When I mentioned that in the chat, the streamer reacted with this here:3 -
@jenochi this is for you
Due to a recent suggestion by the above-mentioned @jenochi, I though that this deserved to be a rant.
Dropping support for IE will once and for all ease web developers lives and it has got to start somewhere. Who's with us!?7 -
Fuck, today was a total shitshow. Every damn line of code I touched seemed to blow up in my face. Fucking bugs popping up left and right, and the deadline looming over my head like a goddamn guillotine. Today my wife mentioned divorce over dinner.5
-
I don't know the current total number of daily active users and rants counts on devRant. But maybe it would be nice to have a group tagged/mentioned feature. Or something similar. Or subscription to a tag?
Like for example, when it comes to security and privacy and google-free-life all of us usually mentioned linuxxx and the gang. When it comes to server, if I'm not wrong Linux and electrical hardwares for Condor, etc.
But there might be (should be) other who should be mentioned and who would want to get mentioned as well.
Might be fun as well. All those Raven and clans can communicate easily with such feature.
Thoughts anyone? If I got positive responses here, I'll open a feature request on GitHub 🤔31 -
I was setting up a small home server running CentOS to my closet and was fighting with a USB Wifi adapter that wouldn't stay "awake". Googled the error messages and nothing...
Decided to about it on the CentOS forums and mentioned (MENTIONED, WASNT THE POINT) CWP (CentOS WebPanel) in my question, an admin came, COMMENTED A LINK TO A FORUM POST THAT TOLD "CWP IS NO WAY LINKED TO CENTOS" AND CLOSED THE QUESTION!
FUUUCKKKKK, i wanted to hit something sooo hard. The admin basically turned my point from A to X.4 -
I am amazed that nobody mentioned Cloud9. I have been using it for 3 years and it is the best Cloud IDE ever.7
-
!Rant
I was just listening to a podcast and they mentioned patreon. Not sure if you two, @dfox and @trogus, thought about creating a patreon page. I would definitely support you guys for the work and time you two put into devrant. Would be awesome to have some method to tip you guys some dollar for a tea ;)1 -
The teacher I mentioned here, https://www.devrant.io/rants/138737
No longer works at my college. A lot of students had trouble with her. We got a new teacher and he's awesome. Let's see where this goes.
P. S. He lets me use Vim. -
When its saturday morning and you're on a bridge because the migration is still failing 34 hours in and the PM mentioned the vendor doc that he 'trimmed for your benefit' and replaced with his terrible doc, and you beat the original out of him and basically read off the section title "Exactly the error you got and the steps to prevent and resolve" and section 2 "big bold red letters explaining how to avoid it" and you instafix it. #wherewereyouonthursday
-
Awhile ago someone mentioned Freepik and interested to buy the premium package, if my memory serves me. I forgot who.
But Freepik is giving 40% off right now.
// I'm just a Freepik user sharing for anyone interested. I don't get any promotion fees (sadly) ☹️8 -
What is the fucking point of creating an amazing device with amazing software, which has a very nice API BUT USELESS FUCKING DOCS.
The thing has features that are only visible in their software, it is mentioned nowhere in the api docs and I have no fucking idea how to access those important features. Fuck you1 -
Get a ticket for a low priority bug, reported internally. Fix the issue mentioned in the bug.
Moves to QA environment, the original bug reporter tests and *passes* the ticket.
Moves to Staging environment, same exact individual then *fails* the testing. Cites totally new/unrelated changes that need to be made.
Apparently our the workflow is -
Code->QA->Staging->Requirements
Makes sense! :)1 -
So, I guess this is some good news...
I'm currently on annual leave, speaking to few colleagues and one of them mentioned that the Snr. dev mentioned in my previous posts has handed in his notice.
We also have a new line manager, so hopefully I'll actually be able to sort out technical debt, implement the changes I want to implement without being blocked off or PRs closed without notice.
So I guess this is a win, also means a new Snr. dev position has opened up so you bet I'm gunning for it when I get back.2 -
"Startup" mindset is invented only to rip off hardworking people, lower your wages, working 16 hrs with no apparent reason, hectic environment to hype mentioned things which is mearely show for the fools. As if people weren't starting up companies centuries ago.1
-
So this one is interesting.
As I have mentioned on my site, I'd be one of the below:
1. Anthropologist
2. Archaeologists
3. Sound engineer
4. Musician or Artist of some kind
5. Travel guide
6. Museum curator
7. Or maybe own & run a Burger joint with Rock n' Roll playing all day
After spending much time in front of screen, I felt like would on field job be better for me, in terms of physical and mental well being?10 -
Another fun thing. This morning one of the first mails i read was a issue about a bug in our software.
This was a bug i mentioned months ago but there was nog evidence where i searched like mails chats or tickets.
If people would just listen to me this bug was solved months ago but back then i got a reaction like: "works over here" while i tested it on two different instances with buggy results each time. -
I love calling (or mailing) helpdesk "engineers" about issues. Clearly something that explicitly has been mentioned to not be the issue is the issue, amirite? 🤪
Engineers my ass 😑3 -
What the fuck is so bad about JavaScript??? Like really. Everyone hates it but why? Developers HEAR JavaScript mentioned and immediately throw shit. Why?? JS is my go-to.28
-
Just left my first "here be dragon's" comment... I feel dirty.
I am required to develop using the WORST documentation, that I was told is 100% accurate, but contradicts itself, had blank parts, etc. When I emailed the creator, they fixed the parts I mentioned, but didn't proof the rest.
The math is probably all wrong, but I am working off their information and it seems to work in the one case they gave...1 -
Our teacher always tells some funny facts while coding. Today he mentioned auto stereograms. Someone who can read this?18
-
Some weeks back I mentioned (in a comment) my small program capable of editing the tags in audio files based on the filename.
Today, I had some spear time and implemented it in Go (the original version was Ruby).

I promised someone to mention him if I get to publish it. But I forgot his user name :(9 -
Secret shhh!!!!
So you might have seen devRant news announcement! David mentioned about "Secret Project" Tim has been working on 🤔 Can you guess what it could be?

I've known about ligature fonts for about two years now. First thoughts where "ewh Im not gonna get used to it".
Kinda forgot about it until someone mentioned it to me. I tried it out since it was built in IntelliJ and don't want anything else anymore. But when pair programming I do get some confused looks.
What is your opinion on ligature fonts like Fira Code?2 -
Udemy, Skillshare, Coursera, Pluralsight, and FreeCodeCamp are all kinda garbage.
Has anyone tried Team Treehouse?
I have a strong feeling that Udacity is the best thing that I've ever discovered in my learning life.
Can you share other online courses I haven't mentioned? Thanks.11 -
The moment you are laying in bed and you suddenly see a rant about the perfect laptop with 20+ comments on the rant.
*starts googling every model mentioned in comments*6 -
So my gf told me about a job offerin she heard. They're looking for Python dev for a weather website.
Cool sound good.
Thank god I went for a drink with friends that night cause when I mentioned the job...well.
Apparently this dick pays about a 100$ LESS than a MINIMUM wage (not to mention the hostile work environment).
Honestly idk how they even stay afloat. I mean you can make almost DOUBLE working at McDonald's. -
Developed a feature 4 weeks ago with a lot of requirements from PO, even more from QA, wrote beautiful code/tests, was actually happy after deploy since everything worked beautifully.
Sales increased a lot because of this.
Story created in Jira today by mentioned PO: As a PO I want to have that feature removed because it doesn‘t work in IE9. PO decides so I had to do this.
So: What exactly is the best way to hide a body?3 -
30 notifications) => comments on your rants... Somebody replied to the rant you commented on... XYZ mentioned you in a comment
Great !! But on which one ?3 -
I think I mentioned this before but I hate recruiters that send me a f*cking long email to fill instead of a form like a normal person.
Today I got one of those and his excuse was that it saved time on the call to ask more. He mentioned to just copy and fill it using his format.
I can't believe these people still exist. -
Was once interviewing for Ops support roles looking after multiple websites wrote in java, rails, php with some rest apis, apache, varnish and more....
We were also starting moving towards automation and devops practices so we needed to expand...
We have a great CV from someone who had all of the technologies and chef mentioned on their CV so we were positive....
Invited to interview and something wasn't right..... I dropped a "so you mentioned a few different languages on your CV, can you talk me though some of the applications you've looked after and what languages they were written in, etc?"
His reply.. "yes I looked after a lot of applications and helped people with them in English"
Me "oh.. Okay.... So those apps which software languages were they... You mentioned things like Java and Php and automation tech like chef?"
Him "well yes they were all sorts of things but I predominantly looked after the apps that were wrote in English... Didn't deal with any wrote in java or chef... Just English"
Me ".... Does anyone else have any questions?"
Safe to say we didn't offer him the job.... -
I was talking about the mobile game The Room around another student yesterday and mentioned how it's like a escape room type of game.
Today I got 3 different types of escape room commercials on Instagram/Facebook. Never gotten anything close to this regarding ads.
I've never felt so afraid, or spied on.5 -
As I mentioned in previous rants
The company that I work for is very loud and noisy, making it really hard to code.
First day in new office, bigger space in the same building....PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NOISE AND LOUDNESS
FIRST. DAY.
Sorry guys, I have complained too they dont care.3 -
Like many others: Linux, GNOME, the GNU build tools, Firefox, blender, ...
A few I haven't seen mentioned:
- Liferea
- Kdenlive
- restic/borg backup4 -
I'm currently looking for jobs on LinkedIn
So i came across this opening and i tried to apply there
The moment i reached their site , it says
The position is already filled
Date posted: 4th August, 2020 (on the company's website)
And the LinkedIn post also mentioned 4 hours ago only :/
Why do they do this?11 -
A client's representative (was an operations manager maybe; non technical guy) was explaining his legacy project (a knowledge transfer session), mentioned about using Azure for their new system.
One of the senior .net developer in the room interrupts this guy and asks "can you explain what do you mean by azure?"
I was like "what the fuck! did I hear it wrong" -
Never had a truly bad experience with a designer but once one mentioned offhand that the unique keys that we were using to secure access to sensitive information should be only 4 characters long because it looks better that way...
I kept them at 161 -
I propably mentioned it in an earlier rant but my father was a programmer, my grandfather was a programmer, and thus my son shall be too.10
-
A senior engineer, while talking about adding encryption to the application, mentioned using SHA256 for that purpose.13
-
Today I have created a server application on Python Tornado which can forward TCP Packets directly to HTTP request queue without any intermediate caching.
Our remote IOT devices (microcontrollers with sensors attached) send sensor reading over TCP Socket to our server and all the connected web applications can show the data instantly using long polling and the above mentioned technique.1 -
So I've mentioned before that I'm pretty much the sole programmer for my robotics team. I'm on vacation for a week, and the other programmer has to take over.
Is it normal that, since I made the code work and wrote it almost all myself, I am fearful that she's gonna fuck it all up? I kind of want her to work on it slowly so I don't worry too much...3 -
Hello C++ / C programmers. I've noticed my professor putting the ASCII code of a character into an int instead of just using a char to store it. When he does this he's not doing math or anything with them, so is there any advantage to it? My TA mentioned something about memory alignment, but I'm not experienced enough to know how something being aligned differently in memory would help or hurt a program.5
-
TLDR; sometimes I want to murder my friends.
Pratten: Hey Ethan can you image the robotics programming laptops?
Me: Yeah sure no problem. Let me just make a custom windows iso with all the software we need so I don't have to deal with installers after the fact.
Pratten: Ok great!
Me: *makes custom ISO compiles it and puts it on usbs*
Pratten: hey could you also add drivers station?
Me: uggggg... *Recreates iso and preps bootable flash drives*
Me: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU NEED?
Pratten: nope that should do it ;;;)
Me: ok great. *flashes laptops and runs install. (they're old so it takes a while)
Pratten: ok good job thanks. Did you install *NOT PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED TOOL SUITE 1* or *NOT PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED NEWER TOLL CHAIN THAT ONLY HE KNOWS HOW TO GET* ? If not I'll have you install those later.
Me: *suicides*4 -
Just got sent a text document to read in and auto generate a mesh from the coordinates in the file. Some how the fact that it's >29,000,00 coordinate points has failed to be mentioned until now.1

No performance bonus was mentioned in my contract but hey they gave me one anyway... Man I love working here1
-
I'm not sure if it is a dev experience, but definitely boosted my morale.
In 2014, my company (in India) sent me to attend a conference in Boston. The conference was about big data.
When I came back, I wrote a blog post about Apache Spark in my company's blog. Because of the blog, my name got mentioned in a prominent newspaper's article about Apache Spark.
PS: That is my only blog post till date -
Woo hoo, how I just love having to develop an extension to a system that the company bought 😍
Especially when there is an API that is completely undocumented, not even mentioned on their site 😍
Even more when it's a feature you expected to be there when you bought the system, because it's a reasonable thing to expect 😍
Fucking Ubiquity Unifi Video 😭 -
To you, who use Windows 11. Is there at least one feature that makes you glad you switched from 10 to 11? Or maybe not necessarily glad, but it would make you appreciate the new OS? One thing that would make the upgrade worth it... I myself can not think of a single fucking thing. (Please don't say better HDR support, that's the one most often mentioned feature. Definitely not good enough reason to have a new OS)11

Have I ever mentioned my undying love of NullPointerException?
I love those so fucking much I would give up my non existent social life for it.
This is a cry for help please help2 -
So the guy who i mentioned previously with his shitty csv made webservice which i needed to use.
It returned utf-8 encoded xml:
- in file the header contained central europe encoding
- the xml had more roots
- basically he only put his csv format inside xml tags
- csv contained html tags but there wasnt cdata
Now work with this lol
I neded to cut this shit with string functions and also some numeric data get with regexp from htm table td's
Whyyyyyyyyyyyy1 -
I'm not sure if he's mentioned already, or if he's"famous" at all, but I'm a fan of Joey Hess.
Once I saw his name on some of old debian man pages and for no apparent reason, I looked up his name and found his home page.
He was a motivation for me to start learning Haskell, and also I was damn envious of his awesome lifestyle.
See shy jo at https://joeyh.name -
Why do I get push notification for comment even when I got the mentioned notificaton of comment on same post and same comment ?2

So my manager mentioned off hand that we might look at updating our company website to look a little more modern...
Me being me jumped right into action and now that I've finished I remember why I haven't built my personal site.. Fuck static web pages man...
Don't know why I did this, not even happy with it but I think it'll do, CSS and HTML is messy but fuck it, it works...1 -
Someone mentioned that client want to use wordpress instead of they current website because it is cheaper! Ok lets see how cheap it is.. each time wp release update after updating you need go through all website and check if nothing is broken.. plugins will need update as well because usually they run on specific wp version. Fixing theme and plugins requires dev time.. despite all those things.. have common sense. Maybe it is good for some type of business to host few pages without any business logic or use as blog without scare to loose everything and do not store users data.. someone mentioned that it is secure to run anything because updates are the best security to avoid security breaches. So why banks are not running on WP? Why health service is not using WP?
-
The moment when your company customer is a major mobile provider and you reply to their support question: "Device you mentioned was not included in the bundle you got, but we can include it for 4.99/m + vat if you're on contract."
;D for all the times they said it to me... -
worst documentation.. OpenCV.
About half of the features I've used are not even mentioned in the documentation. The worst part is that at first look the website looks neat and well maintained but in reality it is missing a lot of usefull info. And some of it is plain jibberish.3 -
I plan on going to office on time... I generally reach after 10:30, timing mentioned on my offer letter was 9:00.
So, waking up has never been an issue.
But I wake up, lay on my bed doing nothing... Sit on my bed doing nothing... Does everything in ultra slow motion...
And regardless of how I early I wake up I'm always late. Ugh.2 -
Asked my teacher for help in 10th grade, she came up to my computer, looked at the code, zoomed in to 350%(ctrl+), mentioned that in C# we use upper cased functions names and then disappeared.
Not only the bug was not fixed, I couldn't even execute my code now.2 -
Sorry to repost,
I had made a request for friends post last week, but someone mentioned my discord link was too far down, so maybe people missed it.
So here it is chirptune#1829.
Again, I'm doing wfh and having decent anxiety so I would appreciate talking to someone. I can also hear you on your problems. -
I am partially self taught and partially book taught.
The self taught part involved viewing the source of websites and learning HTML that way.
The book part comes from when I worked at a .COM startup in their customer service dept while learning HTML. I mentioned it to the IT Director and he threw a ColdFusion book at me and told me to learn it and I could move to the IT dept. Needless to say, I haven't done customer service work since.3 -
As I've mentioned in a company-held course about this topic: Construction work noises.
I quote:
"Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr."
At least there's earphones that help prevent this from ever reaching my ears. -
I just started a new project with a new client who once off-handedly mentioned offering us stock options if the site is successful. He's paying us real money to do the site and I hope he doesn't pull the old "Oops, I'm out of money. Would you like stock options?" move. Thanks to hellobonsai.com contract language I think we're covered.2
-
It depends, really. Sometimes it's a spontaneous urge, sometimes it's me drinking and coding whilst doing so.
Sometimes it's a lot of coffee as mentioned in another post commenting on this week's topic.
Regarding the drinking: for some reason my code works and I write more in less time.
Un-fucking-believeable.2 -
We had a planning meeting and it was mentioned that a specific story is too big and needs subtasks.
A team leader took responsibility to do that and guess what? The person just created two or three subtasks without any f*** content.
Yes, just a generic title and have fun figuring out the responsibility of each subtask.1 -
I'm surprised no one mentioned anything about Nvidia's new 30xx cards here on devRant. Or someone already did but I didn't see it?8
-
Notification system is weird
Suppose I have 200 notifs unread and as usual, dR shows 99+ on its bell. But if I click to see it(someone mentioned you in a comment and ++d your rant and whatsoever), its logic is flawed and shows only 97 notifs left unread. But actually 200-3=197 in the whole fucking list5 -
My coworker cannot log in to his company email account. So I contacted the guys in charge of this by email, asking if they could help and asked whats the process now or how does this work. I assume if his email is not working, they cannot send him a password reset link.
their answer: yeah, sure, we reseted the password of the mentioned user, here is his new password5 -
I really try to not write passive aggressive replies but people who don't seem to read before typing are making things harder than they have to be.
"Wow, thanks you so very much for the suggestion. I mentioned that I already tested this scenario and that it seems to be unrelated to this case, but thanks for bringing it up again! Now I really question my ability to get my point across"1 -
ok. worst interview.
i was refused for a dev position because i couldnt answer a non techincal question they had for me.
i mentioned in my resume that i previously worked on sms ( when it was still a thing ). the interviewer asked me how sms can help their company. i couldnt get around to a specific answer. i mean, come on! isnt it your job to think about the application in your own company?5 -
When you find that one critical piece of documentation that you need causally mentioned in a github comment somewhere. They'll never know how happy they made me :D
-
Is c a good language to learn. Or c++ or C#. What projects can you do with the languages i mentioned.9
-
yo tester, I mentioned that I was off for half a day, WHY in the world are you trying to contact me to say that the test environment does not work??!!?!
There are more capable developers online that can fix that for you!!!
Stupid incompetent person!2 -
Emailed to a group seeking for help on a certain web app function.
Specifically mentioned that I tried turning my system off and on but didn't work.
(To ensure no one suggests me this)
Got a reply, did you click the restart button in the web app UI.
I closed the browser and opened again, and the fucking issue was resolved by the restart button on the UI.2 -
Been working for a client in different time zone. We are an offshore team of 18 ppl. Now we have 2 an hour long meetings daily, one is our internal and the other is with the client.
Today I mentioned that we are consuming 36 man hours daily just in the meetings and they were like, nah man, we are good. 🙄🙄 -
Learning to troubleshoot issues with vms. Had to break a vm with a script I was given and then fix it. Docs I was given said x error should be in y log. I check the log; nope. Check the other logs for other possible errors mentioned; nope. Turns out something else broke instead and before of the thing I was supposed to break. Rip me
-
So we (group of 3) were out to a tech guy who was out sourcing some project. During the meeting we mentioned VCS, upon hearing this the guy was like "this is used by big companies". we left the meeting then and there.

Current I’ve been assigned 5 pages web design, but my coworker only been assigned two simple html and css task. We got same two weeks to finish it. She joined three months before me. After the task done, my manager ask her to do demo to team, she never mentioned me, and today’s stand up, big team manager said thanks for her demo and work, she didn’t mentioned me too… And now everyone contact her instead of me, and then she told me what others said later.
I feel she’ve been take credit from me..
should I talk with the manager about this? Or I should just quit the job?3 -
For the past days i’ve mentioned that i need a backender to create me an extra page in the solution. No attention was given. Backenders where too busy. Today we started a new sprint and i got asked what i’m gonna do.
I told them for the fourth time, i need backend work done to continue.
I got pissed.
Backender got pissed.
And in the end nothing will be done for this cause.
Fucking great.
Fuck my life.
Fuck these people.1 -
In a e-commerce project my client asked for tax calculation with static some x value all the time.
Me: As promised your site is live and please check it.
Client: Checks everything. I want this tax to be dynamic.
Me: That was not mentioned earlier. Now I need to redo the design which takes much time.
Client: You will just change the addition at the end then what's with the design change.
Me: ( I killed him already in my mind)

Well, i when I was 13 I thought that a bit extra knowledge before programming in school would be nice, so I bought a book about the basics of java. The books never mentioned the concept of an IDE, so I just used the windows editor and command lines.
And yes, you guessed right, the battles with the compiler were furious. -
hey, someone mentioned nasa today or whatever. got me curious. if you happen to catch this, the falcon launch happens in 16 minutes. nasa.gov2
-
We were looking at the screen confused as to why the SolR queries that weren't working a day before were suddenly working.
Being the troll I am, I mentioned that maybe the little elves that live in little shoes came around and fixed it.
The other guy looked me dead in the eyes and mentioned "But there was no commit message."
We burst out laughing. -
Today there was a question on the react native forum asking how to map an array..... ([].map(mapFunction))
1) it's the wrong place for the question
2) like 80% mentioned ramda, lodash, underscore :(7 -
Stupid project ideas pitched at me?
Well, basically everything my friends ever mentioned.
NO I don't wanna help you do shady things... and as soon as someone drops the word hacking I route the whole conversation to my inner /dev/null2 -
My boss is in a meeting (davanti a un caffè) with someone who is "a technophile" and "really knows about AI". He was amazed some months ago by the images they were generating using their paid service (right after that, I showed him Bing AI and the conversation ended).
We have discussed using AI previously, and we have been developing web apps for 5 years now.
These are the messages I've been receiving through the last hour and a half and haven't read; I guess it's information he considers will be important when we meet later:
- LLM modelo de lenguaje
- Large language model
- Chat gpt 4O
- API
- Aplication programe interface
This are all things I've mentioned either within the past months, or ieri *itself*, as he mentioned he was meeting this guy.
I'll keep you posted on new messages.
I wonder if that guy says he's a "prompt engineer"...5 -
Went for a interview for a first time after I've found a job as developer last year. It was my first time trying to get a job in gamedev. My dream has come true - they asked me about what games I like and we have talked about mentioned titles for about ten minutes. No idea if I presented myself good enough but experience was really awesome.

Recruiter: ‘Dear PsCustomObject,
I checked your profile and your experience with JavaScript is impressive and I wanted to gauge your interest with company XY...’
Too bad nowhere in my profile JS is mentioned as I don’t use it (and would love a better life knowing it is not out there anymore).2 -
Ugh.. what's the point of a design document if you don't want me to follow it and just want me to build features you want and that the client mentioned nothing about.
and yet you wonder why we are over budget. -
This is my last month at this my current company. Found another company who was really interested in me to join them. They even took me out for dinner so that I can say "Yes" to their offer. I did say "Yes" however I have mentioned that if the management if fucked up, I will leave.
Before that I will need to burn my current leaves. Starting from 15th of Jan in the new company.3 -
I'd teach the basic principles of researching technologies, choosing a technology stack, proof of concepts and reading and understanding documentation. If this is done correctly it's 50% of the project. Nowhere on my CS uni has anybody mentioned these things, and I see other students are failing because they don't understand how to start a project or read docs.
-
Our OOP lecturer spent the first 6 weeks of the module covering basic programming concepts we had already covered in 2 previous Java modules. Halfway through the module before he even mentioned objects. Biggest waste of time ever.
-
I am in school. Talking to the dean of the program he mentioned that there is a programming class that is required. Naturally I inquire about the language in the class and he responds with Python. I am ecstatic. I love Python. I eat, sleep, and breathe Python. Class comes up, and time to buy books. I am now the owner of Windows Powershell Cookbook and Learn Powershell in a Month of Lunches. :-(2

Someone save me from this fucking stupid corporate web based trainings and let me focus on more important shit like re-factoring my code (ohh joke) and/or writing something more code then going what i just mentioned above.

Ah, the joys of using a bleeding edge web framework! After updating a bunch of NuGet packages, I get the TypeInitializationException from hell. Googling the error message turns up void, because seems to be me and about a dozen other devs using this framework.
2-3 new threads per week in the support forum and mentioned in a total of 288 StackOverflow questions. It feels lonely using this framework, but the design is so darn promising...5 -
Don't remember who recommended me wes bos, but generally it's ok, you do learn a lot, even things not directly mentioned in the usual tutorials, but the amount of mistakes he makes, makes it look like hes just started learning it himself and now tries to just quickly shoot out a course out thin air to just bust some more money up his pocket2
-
When I was discussing this position with their HR, she mentioned they are filing time sheets, but she didn't mention they do it by typing something like "10:10-12:34" in a text area
Now she is like "oh, you'll get used to it, everyone did"1 -
A friend was gifted a laptop recently. When we talked about it, the person mentioned that it's a snsv laptop. disappointed to not find a new brand but a good old ASUS instead

I don't know, if it was mentioned before (probably was), but there isn't any option to create a female avatar with short hair.

How no one has yet mentioned the lofi radio on youtube is beyond me....
but the Katamari OSTs get me so hyped when I code

Taking my company's Security training... One of the rules was don't download unauthorized programs.
Find except we're devs so if we really need a program we could write our own that does the same thing
But yes lots of things mentioned we shouldn't do that well I think any sane person would do...
Wondering are they trying to make everyone quit or is this like double speak?
Do all companies do this?4 -
Didn't see this mentioned before. BeyondCompare is one I use everyday, but goes unnoticed in the fav software list.3

Recently my work is just making designs for upcoming features / reworks that will probably take months to even start developing. I mentioned a few weeks ago again that I rather write code and now this sprint, it is 100% design tickets :(1

I created an application A which was faster than B. As the authors of B created a repo for benchmarking and mentioned
'Do you know other Bs? PR! :D'
I created a PR in Apr.
it is not accepted yet.4 -

Found out that a pervert from my gf’s highschool took a bunch of screenshots of her Instagram (bikini pictures, etc.) and posted them to the r/breeding and other fucked up subreddits even though she was only 16/17 in the photos
We notified the uni he goes too and nothing happened. We noticed the police of his hometown and they said they couldn’t do anything because he was currently at his uni
He then claimed it was a rumor and it wasn’t him even though the Reddit account that posted it had a previous post that directly connected the Reddit account to his Instagram account and the Reddit account mentioned had a post that mentioned his home town
My poor gf is now having panic attacks bc this motherfucker wanted to jerk his tiny dick off with his retard friends bc they were rejected by her in highschool
It’s taking so much effort not to send him some phishing emails and empty his fucking bank account20 -
No idea if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I feel it would be really cool if @dfox could public some kind of stats for devRant (anonymous, but on things like post count per day, topics etc...)

It would actually be interesting to see all of Jase's accounts(active and inactive)🤔. List and tag one if you can remember so that we can have a count. Try not to repeat an account that has been mentioned.8

So I’m the frontend developer in this company. I am the one with 10 years of experience when it comes to html, css and js.
How can it be then that I’m not invited to frontend meetings?
I checked the meetings colleages have and came across a excel sheet. My name is mentioned about 10 times in this sheet. Which was what the meeting was about. However I am not a part of this? Wtf?2 -
After spilling covfefe on my imac magic keyboard i looked up on yt how to fix this and they said to put Isopropyl Alcohol on it. I highly recommend https://www.codegrepper.com/ (if you're not using it, you may really like it), I'm paying for GitHub Copilot for use in vscode and Android Studio and find it very useful, and now playing with ChatGPT as a google search/chrome extension https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
With Google Graph and the combination of everything mentioned above life is pretty good :D6 -
Watched UFO 2018.
Movie mostly about guy trying to solve math problem but nice.
Learned about fine-structure constant and that all base SI units were redefined in 2019 lol.
I don’t remember anyone mentioned that scientists changed all of standardized measurements.
Overall nice movie if you like those about solving imaginary problem without special effects etc...
Looks like nobody cares how much kilogram weights.7 -
So the adorable teacher I mentioned on my last rant, wants my group to add a lecture to our work, because what we specified on our proposal apparently was not enough for 3 people. If at least he had read that fucking shit like he should, he probably would see that what we proposed requires more hours than what is specified on the class sheet. FML2

I Really get fedup with all the software I come accross and sometimes buy, that is in an unfinished state, esspecially my Job software, the save button saves the current data typed into the previous file opened and not the current running file. The Taborder is not flowing good, the process button is before the last input. And the service, I mentioned it to the inhouse developer at HQ, but he said I am using it wrong.3

Are any of you guys doing mobile game development? I recently started looking into this and decided I want to learn. What frameworks are good for making online multiplayer 2D and 3D games?
If anyone of you have played hide.io, that is the type of game I'd love to make. I remember a couple of years ago LibGDX was the shit, but now I couldn't find it mentioned in any recent articles.2 -
I've mentioned this before, but I never really understood bit flags until I tried out Cocos 2D and read about how you implement hit detection. You identify different rendered objects with an enum value, and it would spit out a result every frame that you use bitwise logic on with the enum to determine which objects were touching. Such a simple and elegant way to represent combined state.
It may be elementary for some folks but I was not a CS major.1 -
Is OSS code worth it as an alternative to VSCode?
Found about the open source version a few days ago, and deciding to use this instead of VSCode on my new Manjaro distro(was using VSCode on Ubuntu previously). I did read through the differences as mentioned in the VSCode wiki, but I'd like to know what people here think of it.4 -
Hey @we3D why am I just now hearing of Oberon programming language?… I feel like I’ve heard Pascal before you mentioned it, but to be honest… if I had, it was rare too. I’ve definitely heard of C… wth ETH Zurich been doing since the 80’s….2

A couple weeks ago I mentioned to my boss that we are thinking about creating a program to send invoices through cxml. Today he sent me an email that just says FYI with a link to the Wikipedia page on cxml

Difference between security threat and programming bug ?
Found a cool paper about format string attacks which mentioned buffer Overflow is a security threat while format string is a programming bug.
Had no idea what that really meant.
Tnx1 -
Finally, installed nvidia drivers on arch linux and I can watch videos without screen tearing.
It took me 8 months to figure out to download the main driver from their site instead of using the commands mentioned in arch wiki.15 -
My dream job, apart from everything that's been mentioned already, is working every other month or so: one month working (not too hard of course), one month off. I'd spend that either travelling or hobbying.

So basically
-I have a project to finish due next week from an interview i had and i mentioned that i want a server side role, i am more of a PHP & MySQL (laravel).
-Also told them i am not very good at the front end
-So good so far
-They gave me the requirements
-BUILD A FU##ING website using
{
- BOOTSTRAP AND WORDPRESS
}
two let's call them tools i have NEVER used and also mentioned that
So here i am having my fking pulse over 100 trying to damn figure out how this bs works.
End my suffering
Have a nice day!!8 -
I recieved a -2 on a stack overflow question because I mentioned the flutter widget that I was having issues with........2
-
I got downvoted in stackoverflow because the guy had two problems. One he mentioned in the question, everyone answered that. The problem persisted because there was another problem too. And I kindly mentioned the problem. I currently have two downvotes on that answer. And I bet you, the answer is correct and working. I even created a codepen.3

1) Have a plan for what's going to be talked about (and what will not be mentioned)
2) Could this meeting be an email or done async? Then don't schedule a meeting
3) Send out the calendar invite at least 72 hours before. Include details in the title and description, such as join link and if video will be on or not
4) Join 5 mins early to ensure everything is working
5) Start the meeting right on time, no matter who isn't there
6) If someone joins late, don't recap what's been mentioned
7) End on time, the time that was set when the calendar invite was sent, ending early is also fine
8) At the end say thanks, and know who will send out the notes which include tasks mentioned and the deadline. As well as who to contact if have any questions
9) If a select portion of the meeting attendes is going to have another meeting regarding this, then meet elsewhere
10) Actually send those notes before the end of day -
So people mentioned hexo here and I got really interested, since it seems really lightweight and has nice themes ready to download, but I don't get it, you have to re-generate via "hexo generate" the public html each time you want to publish something new?1

The bad thing about github library's readmes is that every time i act as it's step by step guide i encounter errors that no not mentioned how to solve it any where
-
Best:
- Guiding few junior engineers.
- Figured out the root cause for an issue which would hampered the productivity of some folks.
Worst:
- Not being able to work on a proper dev ticket
- Not even being able to identify a proper fix for the issue mentioned above. (It is still in the works, but only after 2021) -
Why, how, why oh why is the PyQt documentation so awful how and why do i find stuff in some random blog that wasnt in there at all not even mentioned nothing :((((3

As mentioned in one of my comments earlier, I am learning web development. And as such would like a web hosting service that is affordable and has instant customer support.
Suggestions ?10 -
When sales throws you under a bus because you never answer emails promptly about their pet project, yet multiple emails to them asking for a specification for that project go unanswered. When I mentioned the multiple emails the vp of company advised that they do not have the time for trivial stuff such as emails.

Career fair was today at my college. I don’t know why but I makes me kinda happy that some things I’m learning on my own were mentioned that aren’t taught in class
Many people mentioned micro services, some talked about containers like docker, and I had a ten minute conversation just about react js. All things I’m reading and toying with on my own time since they’re not in the curriculum, but I’ve heard them mentioned often enough in articles to know I should know about them -
Good deed done for he day, my friend was versioning his application by using zip folders with the date as the name of the folder. Introduced him to git because the university hasn't thought us how to use it yet and now he is delighted! Note I'm in my final year and college has barely mentioned using version control

You fucking fucktard! First, learn how to fucking read an email and secondly, I was referring to the fucking login issue you mentioned before, not the fucking logout issue!!! Serioursly!>!?!?!?! How the fuck do you function!
Fucking belgium fucktard!7 -
Any React (native) devs in here? What do you think about issues mentioned in this podcast?
I love JavaScript – Software Engineering Daily | React Native at Airbnb with Gabriel Peal, let's play it!

Boss mentioned yesterday about me working with meteor angular, only have experience with meteor react, what sort of learning curve am I looking at?
I figure best to go with it for diversification -
Android studio,
I'm in love with the multiple cursor
And with the thing that you can right click +Ctrl vars/classes/files/functions
And it will take you to them/to where they are mentioned -
Congratulated a Dev at my company after he had finished all the functional testing...
Until he mentioned that he just needs to tweak the test to work with the new code now.. -
Not really an impressive one, but I think it's blasphemous enough to be mentioned:
Creating an embedded application, it was not supported to print a float using optimized libraries (understandable since they're not really supposed to be used anyways), but I was too lazy to convert clocks to a time unit by hand while running benchmarks. So I just printed the float as two integers, splitting it to one for the whole and one for the thousands. -
Client doesn't read scope doc. Sends me email asking basic questions that were mentioned as bullet points in the document and subsequent PSA4

I want to start contributing to open source softwares, but I don't know whom to approach or what is the criteria if there is some for getting selected in open source softwares.
I read many articles on the internet, all of them mentioned what activities one can do in an OSS, but neither mentioned of how to approach them.
Please someone give me a route of getting into OSS.7 -
ugh what have I done to myself?
Today I started this codingame thing someone mentioned on here, but because I'm stubborn I've played every puzzle or game in bash so far...
So yeah, I'm loosing to all the cool kids using C++ or python even on simple stuff and I'm always struggling with this weird syntax - like "$" or not ... whitespace? parenthesis?
I mean I do like some bash but these games are really not made for it4 -
Thierry A Davis, but already mentioned by kiki. So, Robert Nystrom, his book crafting interpreters is amazing. What a knowledge. His book is free online but you can buy as ebook too. He currently works for Google at dart programming language1

Was searching app for patent search °°
Seen one comment with one star and that fellow mentioned that
"It won't find the parents"
Wow! -
The Chrome plugin "Darkness" (I might have mentioned it before 😅)
Yes I know "Stylish" was a thing and it has been replaced, but by then I was way to invested in "Darkness" and it has some features that the others are missing; the styles are tested and maintained and it has themes to choose from.
And it has been a nice experience working with scss 😄 -
TFW 'this' in functions loses its context when in promise chains and none of the blogs mentioned it :^)1
-
At the place I intern, we're managing a project that's quite old (about 8 years). There's a specification document that discusses features but the mentioned stuff has been subject to incremental changes over the years so that these documents no longer fully discuss exact specifications of a particular feature. I'm curious on how you keep track of such incremental changes to a feature? Do you update the specification document with the new requirement document or is there some other way to do it?1

Me and my study group have been developing a system for a company the last semester, but the system isn't done at the end of the semester (which is fine) and the company have mentioned that they want to pay us to finish the system.
The problem is that we have a very little knowledge about how much time it is going to take.
So what are we gonna say? It's pretty hard to calculate a price and estimate any time frame2 -
In Kotlin or Java, I have a list of items that have an ID property. This list is generated based on another list. Now I get a List of mentioned list items and I want to select all items in the parent list, selecting by ID equality.
Is there a more elegant way than just iterating the parent lost for each derived item? Thank you :)5 -
Anyone learn about Bloom filters in school? I was watching a lecture and he mentioned using a Bloom filter with a few hash functions to create a cache you can use to avoid querying a table if there's no match, which is a neat idea. I've never heard of this but I also didn't study CS in school so I'm curious if it's common knowledge.1

Big meeting in our hobby app team, surprise our app is not performing weel on abandoned silverlight framework for windows phone.
Should we go for uwp or xamarin? Our code base is as mentioned in Silverlight so a tool for some conversion exists towards uwp, but is half baked.2 -
SocketIO can't listen to the event 'ping'. Spent unnecessary time on it. Could've been mentioned in the docs. 😑

Oh damn!
I have been tired of everything for a couple of years and thought it is temporary and it will go away. But today I discovered there is a thing called Chronic fatigue syndrome.
Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Fellow developers, if you are experiencing similar symptoms mentioned in the wiki, make sure you visit a doctor; trust me, this permanent state of fatigue will not go away.
I just made an appointment to doctor and urge you to do the same!1 -
Kind of a followup on my earlier rant, it seems like my "teacher" doesn't even really know C++. He replied to me that "the code doesn't work", which is probably because the code needs the compiler flag for c++11 (I barely even know what I'm talking about here), which he would've known *if he looked at the error message*?!
Have I mentioned enough yet that I STARTED LEARNING C++ LITERALLY ABOUT 2.5 WEEKS AGO?!?! OTL5 -
Any Emacs users here? I've seen several editor discussion in devRant but rarely mentioned Emacs. I wonder if it is really not loved…8
-
As mentioned in my profile, still a student. Plus I'm having so much difficulty deciding one area gor development. :/
-
The smaller the code changes the longer the name of PR for the code.
And even more review changes mentioned by the reviewer... -
Getting used to C++.... Jesus those syntaxes.... you can write it so or so or this way... also this way.... did i mentioned this?!1

How come that nowhere on the entire internet it's mentioned whether the AirPods Pro also cancel ambient noise while using the microphone to talk to other people? Am I the only person in the world that would love to have a conversation through the AirPods while being at a noisy place without them complaining about my noisy surroundings? Why is literally no review talking about that (maybe missing) feature? Seems important to me...

Have I ever mentioned how much the Fritz Box 7490 sucks Ass?
Fuck and their 'OS' all it is is slow and keeps dying3 -
On Friday, 2 of my coworkers asked for help on a concourse issue, it wasn't building correctly, and they had been trying to figure it out all day. It was an old VB project, which was built very weirdly. We made some progress, but didn't get passed the error. I recommend asking in slack if anyone had gotten the error before, but the refused, saying that they could fix it.
Monday morning, and at standup they mentioned that they still haven't solved the issue and were going to work on it today. I once again mentioned that (blank) could help them.
Monday afternoon, and they are still stuck the same issue they had friday morning. I give up and contact (blank) myself, who mentioned they have seen this error before and shows them how to fix it. Five minutes later and they are back on track, past the issue.
Why are people so adverse to help, it should not have taken 2 days and me introducing them to accept help... 🙃1 -
question / idea.
I do not know if it already exists or if others have already mentioned this idea.
a devRant live communication channel / chat where you can quickly get help with a issues you are sitting with here and now (of course, it requires others to be on) and I'm thinking of something built into devRant.3 -
So I was out at night with some friends and one of them mentioned her fast ultrabook got slower with the windows updates (Win8->Win8.1). I asked what was her daily tasks to get a base usage.
Me: maybe you should try Linux.
Her: oh yeah, I've heard of that.4 -
@Atheist @Hazarth I know you said its normal that a neural network will be all over the place when its initially training but in this case I'm thinking you mentioned a caveat I'm interested in hearing as its been x number of years since the world ended again.7

If a swat team comes now, I won't be surprised. I was reading the Zodiac's letter when I came across the bus bombing one. And the site included his diagrams! As I mentioned before I am on serval watchlists but I think I crossed the line with bomb diagrams.

Just found this article sharing the opinion of a dev on software project fail with points I saw mentioned here on devRant, but also on other dev-related places. What do you think about it ?

the moment you lunch a kickstarter and get hate massages about things you mentioned in the campaign but they don't red it. http://kck.st/2cn7AED
I said thousands of times at twitter and in kickstarter that kenney. NL did the art and they call it fake...1 -
Sat with the designer yesterday to look at the current state of the homepage and got 15 point to pick up.
Today i’m almost done, i asked him one question: got another 6 points to fix.
Fucking great. You could’ve mentioned this yesterday... -
Challenge mentioned in the below thread is one of the most asked javascipt question in top companies.
Do check it out and post your solution

I'm SO FUCKING PROUD of whoever put this here. It's besn forever since anyone's even mentioned memes as a concept in my high school, much less done/written something for the meme.
-
Business Process Execution Languages.
Would anybody incorporate these into a new project? The guy mentioned it at the interview and I have still not understood what are they useful for... -
I'll go with something not mentioned.
"Git for Windows"
Makes git on Windows so much better. One of those things I use daily but almost never reflect on -
Not sure if this is somehow standard but have a new dev process we need to use to deploy a Docker image to an Openshift container.
(Is an container one node/vm or could be many?)
In the Jenkins build it seems the files are copied to in Docker image.
But they aren't copied to the container/OPENSHIFT deployment image. There's something mentioned about config map but not sure how that's related to file copy...10 -
Is huwaei insane for saying that 1 line of their harmonyos code can do 100 lines of android code. I watched this in a coldfusion video. Link :- https://youtube.com/watch/... , The line I mentioned is at 11:554

Am I the only one that cringes when they see the word "scale" mentioned on a software product's documentation/README?
-
Have I ever mentioned how much i love you all ?
Sweet cuddly cool peoples
Help me in my grandmotherly exodus from perdition !

Have I mentioned how I hate hypocritical old men talking about Shriner or masonic work they don't believe in10
-
Still new to development buy holy dang I had no idea clients could be so fickle.
It seems like every time I turn in my one project- which I've been on for a month because of this nonsense- they think of two more major features they wanted all along but never mentioned -
Since most open-source projects that I use have been mentioned, I'll just mention the last one I've found about and it made my life easier:
Flameshot - https://github.com/lupoDharkael/...
It's a screenshot application that allows quick screenshot editing and has a comfortable area selector. You can see what I mean on github page.2 -
I don't hate Microsoft for the amount of Memes it is mentioned in.....
Faaaakkkk !!!
Just be quite guys !!! They just bought GitHub, Didn't delete your Repos.1
