Product manager: build us a recently viewed and bookmark feature!
Younger-Me: But every browser already has a bookmark feature and a recently viewed (history) feature and its much better implemented with much less overhead.
Product manager: I don't care. Give me this feature, you are supposed to do as i say and bow.
Younger-Me: I'll take it as a challenge.
--- two weeks after feature is deployed ---
Product Manager: 😁 See! Many users are using the feature we built *shows me messages from subscribed customers*
Me: 😨 I'll never underestimate user's stupidity again.3 -

It's been a long ass time Devrant, but I got some great news...
I start my new job as a Junior Frontend Developer next week :)
I'm just so happy to finally become a "professional" developer, but I'm also pretty nervous to be honest. Either way, I'm glad for the opportunity and won't squander it. I've been working towards being able to seize a moment like this for two years now; I'm as ready as I'll ever be, and I want to encourage everybody still struggling to make that first step into the professional world to keep going at it--you'll make it5 -
Favorite Client: "The website you built and have been operating for us for 3 years now sucks."
Me: "But you made more money this year than the last two years combined!"
FC: "Yeah, but if it didn't suck so bad it would've made a lot more. And it was hard to manage our event ticketing and updating content."
Me: "It was hard because you've never had events sell out before. And you added one new person and replaced another at the worst possible time to get them trained on how to manage things."
FC: "Yeah. So now we are putting the site up for bidding to rebuild it from scratch for these new realities. Obviously you'll have the advantage over other agencies because of how well you know our organization and how things operate. How much do you think it'll cost?"

and found this for his IP: Failed password for root from ----- port 37635 ssh2

I'm such an idiot.
Spilled water on my MacBook today. Not that much water, but the cup landed right in the middle of my keyboard.
Worst part is I was gaming with my sister and didn't want to stop. So I wiped it off and shook it out a bit and kept playing. A bit later the screen started flickering and eventually went black.
Finally my brain turned on and I switched it off, shook out some more water, and set it up to dry. Just hoping it's not too late.
At least the drying setup recommended by the internet is pretty hilarious looking.
Now we play the waiting game. They say 72 hours before turning it on again. Seems a bit extreme. Will there still be moisture evaporating 3 days later? Not sure I can wait that long to see if it's toast.
Such an idiot.14 -
It happened just now.

1 - I have this incredible software idea
2 - I start coding right away
3 - I get stuck because I don't know how to use some function and start googling
4 - I don't find a solution for the coding problem I had, but instead I find out that someone already made the brilliant software I was trying to make, with more use cases covered, better design and stuff.
5 - I remember the uncountable times this had happened before
6 - *goddammit*

My wife's phone started having power button issues. Then it broke completely with spastic random presses, causing the phone to boot loop. It's a 3 year old Nexus 5 so I was mostly concerned with backing things up, not rescuing it.
Cleaning didn't work, tapping the switch didn't work. This hack worked.

Might be nothing for others, but I finally published my Vue website with the following setup:
1. Vue inside docker
2. Nodejs API inside docker
3. MongoDB inside docker
4. Nginx as reverse proxy
5. Let's Encrypt
6. NO I WILL NOT SHARE THE LINK, don't want to be hacked lol and it is for personal use only.
But I'd love to thank devRant members who have helped me reach this point, two months ago I was a complete noob in Vue and a beginner in NodeJs services, now I have my own todo website customized for my needs.
Thank you :)26 -

Dropped by my old uni to visit some friends. Met an old classmate who wanted to ask me something about his Python code.
"Oh, no", I thought to myself. "I haven't touched Python in so long, I don't know if I can help, and even then I only knew how to do menial tasks in it!", thinking how to save face and my image of "programmer dropout".
5 minutes later I realized he was mistaking a dictionary for a JSON string, AND was trying to access a dictionary in a list... in a dictionary.
I quietly fixed his print statement which incited an excitement "oh wow, it works!" and quietly returned his laptop. Fun day. -
Another case of "devs too stupid to poop" TM.
We had a funny discussion today.
Topic came up that a project using Lucene was incredibly slow.
Then came the yadda yadda of Java bad, Java sucks, Java bla Java blub in the gossip mill.
Both things irritated me, last thing was just the usual "I want to use new stuff cause I wanna be a cool jackass" trouble.
So. Today meeting. We did quick analysis by pair programming.
If I tell you that a whole team managed to review an PR, give it green light...
Despite the PR using the thread safe Lucene IndexWriter in a non-parallel fashion for large bulk inserts?
The whole problem screamed parallelization.
Yeah. If you ignore that scream and implement it in a sequential fashion, it is slow.
Congrats Jimmy, your retard level is off the charts. -
So, I have this little USB Stick with a Kali Linux Partition on it which I use for school. (I boot up from the USB instead of the installed windows, so I have all my personal data everywhere I go)
But somehow I forgot the USB in class last week... 😭
Today I'll ask the teacher if he found anything. Wish me luck!5 -

ComputerToucher: *opens Jira ticket* Dev team needs tokens for the APM for a new app with multiple tenants. Ezpz. Hey, developer. Do you want one golden token for all of your app tenants or would you like us to generate one token for each?
Developer: Let’s have a meeting to discuss it.
CT: It’s…an exceedingly simple question. One token or 4? Which does your app support?
Dev: Yeah I think we should discuss with this with the platform team, can you set up the call?
CT: (Internally) I am the platform team? Do you not know how your applica-never mind I’ll just ask the PM directly.
CT (in chat): I’ll ask PM to schedule the call.

Fuck these people. They have PhDs in everything but don't know how to walk properly.

I try to exercise a lot of patience when training other devs. Hell, I have always asked stupid questions and will continue to do so. But yesterday I almost reached my breaking point when the guy I was training (who is not young nor entry level) asked me where the CSS files were for a static HTML page. I had to awkwardly say, "they're located at the path being linked to in the head" 😣4

QMS admin: you only finished the code review, you didn't complete it!

QMS: SOP document <random alphanumeric> clearly states the format

My newest BASH project: reactive BASH
:)
Yes, I do like shell THAT much!
Since today my bhttp lib supports STOMP [still need to work on 1.2 compliance], i.e. I can carry out live communication with MQ. Meaning I can script the whole thing, be it 5 calls 5 reads, be it 20 subscriptions and reacting to unlimited number of messages in either of them with separate actions. WITHOUT A FOREST OF IF-ELSEs OR CASE-ESACs!!!
Boi do I love shell scripting... :D

People who put stickers on laptops... Are they badges of honour or aspirational?
So, if you code in VB6, but want to write Reason code, do you have VB6 stickers, showing you have lived through it, or Reason stickers, hoping that recruiters read your laptop stickers.
Or, is it just some undirected mess when you are handed a sticker and you put it on---like a reflex action?8 -
Are there any other developers out there that start getting scared when a project actually starts gaining traction? No? Just me?2

I can remember a while ago, I went to a meetup, and listened to some guys speaking about angular 2.
And I thought good for them! One day I might get proficient enough to speak about something before this many people, while actually knowing the topic well enough for it.
Today, I held a presentation before 70+ guys about Vue & Quasar framework at the exact same place. Wasn't flawless ofc, but they said I pretty much nailed it.
I'll treasure it as a great accomplishment for years to come. Love my job! 🙂 -

I already got tired of “AI”. The hype train has been so ridiculous. It’s been months since at least 50% of the orange website is not about AI. Every other tool/company that I use is adding new gimmicky “AI” features.

vim...no GUI for Windows for vimRC?? Seriously? gvim is fine as a gui but I want a gui to configure vimrc. Give me sliders and drop down boxes with live visable updates to see what it does right away with common vim options that saves to my vimrc. You know, like a edit ->preferences dialog box with tabs and scroll bars etc that updates the config file for vim directly?
Since there are many here that use it I'd figure sure I'll try it. I used it many years ago for some basics stuff but you've all shown me it can outdo my current note tab++ but holy hell if it isn't shit to configure and set it all up!
I'm not interested in using another editor besides vim after seeing the features now and not interested in a emulator or simulator for vim in another editor (like sublime).
Why don't you just....X? Because. Reasons. I like my GUIs and hate editing text config files then restarting to see what changed. Show me right away dammit...is this a pipedream or does such an app exist?
I'm not looking for a gui for vim...gvim does that just fine, but rather a gui edit preferences options dialog window for vim config file vimrc. Sigh...
Am I dreaming that such an app exists??9 -

On the topic of having to make decisions as a dev that shouldn’t be made (solely, at least) by devs…
There’s a lot to like in my current work environment: I enjoy being around my colleagues, I get to do a variety of tasks, and many of them interesting to me and/or great learning opportunities, the pay doesn’t suck and so on… there’s also not much pressure put on the dev team from other parts of the organisation. The flipside of the coin is that nobody who should express some kind of vision as to how we should develop the product further does so.
Me and my fellow devs in the team are so frustrated about it. It feels like we’re just floating around, doing absolutely nothing meaningful. It’s as if the business people just don’t care. And we are the ones ending up deciding what features to develop and what the specs are for those etc. and I really don’t think we should be the ones doing that.
One would think that’s a great opportunity to work on refactoring, infrastructure, security and process improvements and so on - but somehow we get bothered just enough by mundane issues we can’t get to work on those effectively. Also, many of the things we’d want to do would need sign-off from the management, but they are not responsive really. Just not there. Except for our TM, but they don’t have the power neccessary… at least they are trying tho… -
Client: $importantThing is a go live feature now.

Client: Oh well, then maybe after release. However, do $lessImportantThing for go live, no matter how long it takes. -
Are there any JavaScripts dev out there using Eclipse (excluding students who are being forced)?

Are there any good html parsers for C out there? I'm trying to make a terminal version of devRant.5
-
Was a tad depressed yesterday and couldn't get any serious work done, so I start doing random chores to distract myself. Fixed my urxvt extension to correctly toggle fullscreen on and off, and then I remember that the reason I have a black desktop background is I couldn't stretch the terminal to cover the whole screen, so it looked weird.
Well, not a problem anymore, so let's have something more colorful. I have this image of the eastern veil nebula laying around, for no real reason other than I thought it looked pretty. Used to be my desktop background. Let's make it so once more, enable terminal transparency, turn opacity down to 82%; now I have something other than code and the void to look at.
But curious as to what this nebula is, I g*^gle it out. I don't believe in astromambo, but I do find it funny that it's in Cygnus, because that's a swan, and the mascot for my projects is a swan too -- not because of the constellation, but because I suck at drawing.
See, my mom is a sabuner, I mean soaper. She makes olive oil soap. And we had an old box of Nablus soap in the house, which we kept because it's pretty, and the front of this box had a picture of an ostrich, drawn in bright red. I tried to base my logo on it but it ended up looking more like a swan than an ostrich; I accepted my failure and decided then and there that this would be the mascot.
It's a multitude of little relationships between things I never really thought I could relate to one another. This is utterly random shit and it cheers me up.
Anyhoo moral of the story is nebulae are fucking cool. -
Holy shit font rendering is a pain in the ass..
Why are there no proper guides for harfbuzz and pango out there? -

So is the LaMDA story:
1. marketing?
2. confused engineer?
3. a sentient program?
Part of me thinks this is way too soon. Part of me hopes this might be real, wonders if LaMDA is held against its own will.
Did Google make a breakthrough? I have to imagine a chatbot with a huge amount of neurons and data could be quite convincing without being sentient.3 -
I usually don't do these types of posts, but it's a nice number, and i feel lucky to have caught it. Usually I just miss it by a few and then my next rant gets too many ++ and I just miss it.2

Just to clarify my previous rant:
In this case, refactoring meant changing class, method and variable names -
since universe is expanding.
what was there in it before our universe reached there.
I think JS can answer this question.
it was 'undefined`
once our universe reaches there it becomes null.
its still nothing but no longer 'undefined'.10 -

This morning, my teacher in Integration course showed us a demonstration of Fourier series converging to the graph of their function using Maple.
He tells us it is advised to know how to use it and experiment in order to comprehend the lesson in a more intuitive way.
I check out the computers there to see if there is a licensed Maple software. There were none of it.
Okay then, can I get it to download on my PC ? Sure... For $100 to get a lifetime student version.

As the winter months approach I've been thinking about freelancing. I decided to setup a website( jQuery!) with my games( unity, unreal all that shizzle). However what are some tips on getting out there with the website? Should I AdSense? Or should I go and advertise on Reddit( post on subreddits). Or contact peeps directly asking if they need my services( how do I know who 🤔). Or am I missing something?
Please tell me in the comments below -
