Call me a child, but I still have a love for Lego. Lately, as I have been sorting my childhood collection into individual sets, I needed a way to track how many of each piece I've found for any given set, and started programming a tool that lets me pull Lego set inventories from the internet and keep track of the parts I've found.
This is the first time I've found a problem and built a program to solve it, and it feels so good! :D

Browser “Do Not Track” Signals: Most browsers contain a “do-not-track” setting. In general, when a “do-not-track” setting is active, the user’s browser notifies other websites that the user does not want their personal information and online behavior to be tracked and used, for example, for behavioral advertising. As required by recent Shine the Light law amendments we are required to inform you that, as is the case with most websites, we do not honor or alter our behavior when a user to one of our Websites has activated the “do-not-track” setting on his/her browser.5 -

Any other people here that find Python to be actually a harder language than Java? With Java it's much easier to keep track of your code and to track what variables refer to certain object types.
It feels like Python has much more quirks and feels therefore much more inconsistent as a language. Object oriented programming is more verbose with static methods and decorators being vague for example. This makes it harder to grasp concepts like design patterns and SOLID principles in Python imo.7 -

So, how do you guys and girls keep track of your projects ? Stuck with To-do lists for now ^^6 -
Stress is real, drowning... Spotify has my back. Thanks I needed this.

What IDE do you guys use?
I use notepad++, Codeanywhere and Visual Studio 2017 Pro.
I'm looking for decent code completion with internal referencing to keep track of methods and variable.
Would you recommend staying with VS or how about intelliJ?
Or something new?6 -
Yes this is about github, no it's not complaining about Microsoft buying it.
Have you noticed Microsoft seems to be buying/working with its competitors on something they failed to do?
MSN inferior Skype
PowerShell inferior to bash
VSTM inferior to github
And if track record continues, github might go down the shutter majorly...3 -
Not using git{,hub} (at the earliest)
One does not simply keep a track of changes being performed every now and then in an entire project.
Lost some ideas or sometimes the entire project :/ -

I swear YouTube's recommendations are fucked. I watch one fantano review of a song that just dropped and YouTube is over here like
"hey, do you want to see what EVERYONE thought of that track?"2 -

So, my company already has subscriptions to rally (jira alternative) but the current team fucking uses an online SPREADSHEET to track work items! it's easy to track, blah blah, fuck you. The feature requirement is just one fucking line long. Are you kidding me. Don't come back to me saying something is not working as expected when you didn't specify how it should work.3 -
Fellow Freelancers, can you recommend a platform you use to track and share project progress with your clients?
What do you typically use to keep clients updated about project status? There a Fancy SaaS solution or do you use a simple excel file??
Would like some ideas and recos!4 -
Reasons my mother-in-law phones us:
- the laptop is not connected to wifi
- what is the password of our MS Office subscription?
- the website says I can only play videos without adblocker
- I want to keep track of a Youtube video link
:facepalm:5 -
For those who are not in the devRant Discord, here’s a track suggestion:

"Copy the file sent to our warehouse management system to another folder so we can keep track of the deliveries we sent data for."
Why these geniuses think that having a folder with file names containing timestamps (and not delivery numbers) would make their job easier is beyond me... -
What is one of the most important things you can do related to your healthcare? Track your meds.
What **can’t** HealthKit do? Give you the ability to track your meds.

DuckDuckGo claims that they don't track their users, which is very true. But if a person is using an Android device, he/she is already "owned" by Google.
How does DDG help here?10 -
If you're making code changes without a Story or Bug ID, you're doing something wrong. Take the 30 seconds and open a story to track your friggin work please.2

So in my experience, coding while I'm not sober actually helps out sometimes. I always end up documenting my code way more so that I can keep track of what I am doing, and the code I write is actually decent.
Ofcourse, I always re-test it once sober again2 -
At my company we recently made some restructuring of TFS, such as renaming folders and moving projects between folders. That all worked out very nicely - except that some files completely lost track of their history!12

Everyone loves freebies!
So solicited spam time 😎
Developer Nation is running a survey to gain insights, explore trends and track developer experiences across platforms, languages, revenue models, verticals, tools, segments and regions.
Yea ok, it's a massive questionnaire, but did I mention the freebies?

How do you track your job applications? I mean in terms of the number of applications you’ve sent, which stage each application ended, etc4
-
Sometimes, certain features don't work in my app if it's uploaded to the production track in Google Play.
It works in debug mode.
It works in release mode.
It works in the internal testing track.
...but it won't work in the production track? Y'know, the one that actually matters? Theoretically, there shouldn't really be a difference if the same exact APK was uploaded to the internal testing and production track, but... idk dude.
As a result, I implemented a secret way to test a feature in the production build (it's an app to remotely control OBS Studio): if the first connection you added is named "yayeet_" and you open the disclaimer, it tests the feature. Luckily, I got some of the stuff figured out, but I just thought the way I had to test it in production was dumb.1 -
Dafuq? Small people at creatorkit couldn't track me opening their spam and are now RESENDING it because my mac didn't load their spyware trackers in their first email? What even is this?
By the way, this email is about how they're gonna remove the free plan soon & their manipulative gaslighting justifications for that.4 -
I asked my boss if we could move the website to our version control. Reason is because he would make changes and break something and didn't know what he did and so he spends the entire day trying to fix the issue and of he can't figure it out he then asks our only web developer to resolve the issue.
He didn't understand how we could keep it in sync with what is published when he makes changes.
Had to explain to him that's it's only to track changes. He still didn't understand.
How is this person my boss... Only one location for our website, doesn't track changes, and runs the backup on the same computer that hosts the website. Yes... He just modifies the hosting files... -
I have discovered the power of YourKit. Really helped me track down the problem of a ton of threads and a slow application.

I see managers micromanage by having a junior developer to track the things people are doing. Micromanagement is truly a trickle down issue. They learn it from their managers and so on.

The ability to track all deliveries in real time using gps of the exact location is sort of creepy. Just spend about 10mins watching my dasher seemingly lost and trying to locate the restaurant...
But sorta feels like being an overlord watching his serf do his bidding...1 -
ewh, that moment when you make a mediocre track but spotify lowers it’s quality so it sounds bad now.

Question for you guys.
I have an Android app in which you can track when and how much you have worked, etc., especially aimed at (food) delivery drivers. I know those kind of apps already exist, it's a hobby project :). But I have no idea what to call it.
Any suggestions?3 -
Evolving so fast that we would make frameworks to keep track of frameworks that make their own frameworks out of frameworks.
Real AI shall be birthed in this manner. -
Some days I completely lack the ability to focus on anything.. Much like a gold fish.
Other days, I keep going for hours and effortlessly picks right back up on my track..
So riding the wave & acknowledge when I should slack off and fake it when questioned is my method.. :p -

6 weeks of doing nothing except dealing with nightmares from the past in my mind I think I left all that crap behind and I am ready to jump back.
I don’t feel much anger and disappointment anymore, even some excitement for new crap to come by on my desk.
I started to write some code and practice puzzles for getting some decent job or project (again)
Puzzles are usually not a problem but I fail with HR.
When they’re asking me stupid questions I answer with stupid answers to piss them off.
But now time to get some money so I’d try to be gentle. -

I'll start charging hourly for jobs and I'd like some suggestions on how to track my time properly, apps and such that could help me to that. Integration with Sublime would be nice, or something that tracks it automatically.. dunno. I'm afraid i will forget to track if I have to do it manually.
Thanks :)8 -
I might sound stupid, but why don't solo-developers use things like dropbox for active file history that keeps track of every change and also gives diff options and up to 1 year log - instead of git?
Don't get me wrong, git is amazing when you have to work with a team or multiple people in general, but it's simply a pain in the ass when working alone and having to keep track of every state yourself.6 -
Some Devs at work can listen do podcasts without losing focus. I wonder how they can do that. Maybe it depends?

I'm a self taught web developer, I know I can develop great apps, but my code doesn't feel structured... It gets messier as I add more features, and this makes it harder to develop and keep track of everything.
How can I improve this, are there any processes to follow?5 -
you either get unreadable rust code or 7 layers of misdirection so that the compiler can work around keeping track of lifetimes
I mean maybe I'm too opinionated about readability. technically the computer can read it so people should just get good I guess -
PHP is like the black sheep on every family tree. Lots of work revolves around him. It's prone to failure, break up easily, does things in an inefficient manner, and gets all kind of disease. So I'm using other family memebers, C++ and Go, to keep him on track.8
