Well, I thought about configuring an automatic response for this client, or a for-loop.

I don't judge other developers for not knowing or understanding a particular concept, I judge them for pretending like they do...

A quick advice to new developers. Never and I mean NEVER do a "quick edit" or "beautification" extremely close to a deadline. You should not underestimate the power of bugs.

I'm self taught, php, c, c#, and I make stupid little programs that make my life easier as a sys admin.

I want to ask, how do I take things further? Where I'm from, it's really hard to get a job as a programmer without 5 years experience and knowledge in 5 other languages.

Do I try and make bigger apps to showcase myself and hope someone finds me, or what do I do in this instance. I'm not a fully fledged coder, but I'm comfortable and if I don't know something i learn it pretty quickly.

i kinda feel embarrassed all the time. i feel like it's never enough, i don't know enough, there's so much i don't know. i do enjoy my work and sometimes there are moments where i'm proud of what i've done, or these "i'm a fucking genious" moments when i solve a bug or a certain problem or when something finally works. but if i have to do something new, i tend to panic a bit, as long as i do not yet have a concrete solution in mind.
my perception contrasts with the feedback people give me, but even when i'm happy about the positive feedback, i tend to think to myself, "they're wrong, it's not that great"..

Where do you go/what do you do when you need to think out a problem?
Me, I take a drive. I'm not sure why but I seem to achieve maximum clairvoyance while driving around. Moreso at night than during the day, but the effect is still there when the sun is up. I've only been here for 1 month for my new position in Ops, and I already miss software development!

All I do everyday is just typing commands on the terminal.

A post today made me think about this interview I had about a year ago... I shall tell you all about it.

Went to a hiring event for this company everyone was cool but this one guy (who would have been my boss) was a total arrogant, douchey, know it all.

So anyways cue interviewing with him a week later. He says if I give you task A, B, C and they need to be done by the end of the week in which order do you do them. (Note: he literally said abc not actual tasks)

Me: I don't really know how to answer that question without more information.

Him: Well I like to see how people answer it... So think about it for a second.

Me: Ok I guess if doing one task would help me do the next task faster I would do it in that order. Like I can use code or concepts from C to do B faster.

Him: What if A would take 2 days and B and C would take 1 day.

Me: I don't see how that would influence the order I do them in.

Him: Would you complete one task after another or switch between them or do see simultaneously.

Me: It would depend on my previous answer and what would be the fastest way to get them done but without more info I literally cannot give you an answer of like I would do B, C, A.

Him: Would you do the longest task first or the shorter tasks.

Me: I don't know I guess it depends on if it would help you or somebody else move forward with something if I got a particular task or the shorter tasks done first.

So cue more of this kind of back and forth about arbitrary details about undefined theoretical tasks for like 10 minutes.

Suffice is to say I didn't get the job and I'm glad.

As a junior Dev, I understand asking too many simple questions is irritating and usually not welcome, but, is not asking any questions at all considered a sign of disinterest or "zoning out" or lack of curiosity etc etc ?

Reasons to dislike our work VPN when working remotely: Forces all traffic to be routed through it, not only the important internal stuff.

For some reason, I just dislike having everything I do potentially recorded and/or at least slowed down.

Mine was not CS but software engineering. I had been programming for 5 years, and I think anything before my degree was just so bad. No patterns or anything. It was really good in the way that I learned how to do things well, not exactly learning about the technologies. Do they simply check your fb? simple google search your name? advanced queries with multiple search engines? data gathering software like maltego? or really check and link leaked db dumps and pastebins?

Some people just don't get it. When you meet friends who are either non technical or very new to programming, all they ask you is what language do you use.

I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.

Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.

How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. I hate UpWork and Freelancer.com fees and policies about the privacy (or lack) for your projects. But I grudgingly admit they offer protections against fraud. If you're a freelancer, or if you employ freelancers, and do so without the fraud protections of these types of services, how do you guard against being taken advantage of by clients or freelancers? I mean, anyone can write and sign contracts but in the end they're just paper promises not worth anything if the people you're working with or for are "dogs on the Internet" who can simply disappear.

As much as I hate the army and what it represents, I do often wish managers served as squad leaders or officers to at least learn the basics:

How do you deal with low motivation and procrastination caused by burnouts? I've worked on a project almost non-stop for 3 weeks, now I can't think of touching a computer nor going to the gym. All I do is sleeping.

I am still confused why people treat testing as secondary position? Tester are paid less and they hire lower quality engineers. I think testing is as important as any other phase of development, like design or implementation. . . and yeah we do testing of our own code. The only thing I can do in my case is to see that people who change my code may not break basic functionalities. And again about edge cases, try to handle some other left to be seen in production( those which I could not think of due to lack of time) I take care not to leave edge case but sometime cannot do it. I just hope people realise the worth of testing.

How do I get through tough dev days ?

If by tough day we mean a day where I'm really not feeling it or the like, I don't.
I let it pass by me though music or doing something I enjoy doing, or something random but interesting.

If we mean that the task at hand during that day is tough, then there's no escaping it unless you want to risk losing your job, and I can't afford losing my job. So I ask for help, try to do it one little thing at a time. little progress is better than no progress.

My job is as a teacher, but my school just cancelled all in-person classes for the next two weeks, so I will have to teach over phone or Zoom (not sure what they're going to do yet). But I teach a science class and I am in the middle of a set of labs!! How are my students supposed to do lab work in groups over Zoom?!?!

So my company says they are paying the market rate, and I should be grateful about it. When I went for interviews at "some big companies", I got offers from 2 different companies with the annual pay x2.5 of what I am getting here.

My current company mentality is so shitty that they only want to hire undergrads or people from oversea so they can pay less.

I do not even know what my fucking role is at this point, I do DevOps, I fucking do infra, I also do SRE shit, then I also write fucking code for servers. Yet my pay is slightly less than just "dev" working at good companies. Fuck my company, I am leaving soon.

I am currently using angular from 1.5 years. With angular 2 coming to production i was thinking of moving to it.

I am hesitating to move because it encourages typescript over javascript. It adds 1 more dependency to my code ( code will break after angular updates and also when typescript updates).

I selected "ignore all XXX selected files (add to .gitignore)" but it has neither added to gitignore nor removed them from the list.

Question: How do you guys charge your clients? I have had an hourly rate for quite sometime now, but never have I been able to use it since I do not know how to calculate it.

What I usually do is charge a fixed fee and charge on top of a feature is requested,
or I charge a monthly fee for long term contacts and charge on top if any additional feature is requested.

I want to try out hourly charge but since most of my clients are online, I do not know how it will work since the client can believe that I am simply adding additional hours or delaying work causing the hours to increase. How do you guys keep track of IT news... Not financial or companies related news, but new frameworks worth looking for, new updates on know languages/frameworks?

For instance for me to keep up with flutter or firebase I do by following both the github and YouTube channel. But I learned about flutter (early on) for instance, by a random lucky search...
Am I missing on something big? A blog, YouTube channel... Because if I am not missing on something like that I know what to do in the next hackton :P

Just spent the whole night awake to do a university coursework.
Not because I was late or it was difficult, but because the framework we had to use was so wrong that I had to take a 20 minutes break for desperation for every line I wrote.

Hey! I have to build a website using ReactJS and OAuth. Does anyone have tips/links/advice or things NOT to do?

I earned the title of "sql king" due to the complexity of the sql I write (not proud of that because it makes maintainability hell) . It's pretty cool except sometime I feel like I can write shit code and ship it to production just because none can review my code properly or rather spend enough time understanding it,
basically I am not challenged enough...

What do you guys do if you are not challenged or bored ?

After working about a year at a new company, I realise multiple things.

1. Just because their older, or senior, doesn't not mean they know everything.
2. I really like helping other people with coding.
3. I am underpaid for the amount of work I do.

I do the same job as the senior devs, and also take on a more leadership role. The coming talk about my pay will be interesting to see..

I like react, I really do. But one thing I hate about it, is the number of decisions I need to make, I get so fucking confused whether to use redux thunk or sagaas, inline styles or styles components, redux or flux, even to judicially choose whether to use a state management library or not. It just lack of my own experience or don't know what. But this thing sucks

What to do when someone creates anger in me?
How do you guys deal?

I'm in college. Will it be useful in life later if I learn to swallow my anger? or Do I need to develop some mindset so I can't be affected by whatever anybody says to me or insults me.

One of my teachers scolded me in the examination hall because he didn't like my clothes. There were no rules regarding uniforms. I was not wearing revealing or torn clothes, just normal clothes.

I hate it when such things happen. It disturbs me. Even when the whole event is over, the whole thing plays in my mind again and again, sometimes for days.

Am i the only one who thinks TypeScript is not necessary, more some kind of overhead creation?

Almost all of them are made by me ( I do copy some from the net if I got lazy or forget to make a new one ( I do them the previous day ) ) so hopefully some of them are not on the net already

Does anybody else feel a little sad when reading rants or negative comments concerning frameworks you've used a lot or maybe even more in case you're still using them?

In my particular case I just read some comments tackling Angular - and I do not want to say, that those comments aren't justified. We're currently living in a more than ever fast-paced front end framework world and Angular is simply not state of the art anymore.

So I do not want to start a "what's the best framework" discussion here, that's not my intention.

This is more about the feeling you get when you've built a lot of stuff using a framework, maybe you have still projects running on this framework or even contributed.
Either you do not have the time to switch to another framework yet or you're even still somehow satisfied with the way they're working.

However - reading all this negative stuff about such a framework is sometimes not that easy.

..or am I just some kind of strange, sentimental developer guy? ;D

Okay so anyone experienced working with networking or VOIP applications are welcome to try to help me figure out a few questions I have.

1.) How do VOIP applications like Discord and Skype not have to require you to port forward before use?

2.) If I wanted to do stuff with sockets over the internet the user of the application would have to configure a static IP Address. but when Im using Discord, or a multiplayer game, or literally anything that requires connecting to people I dont have to configure a static IP for those applications but I do for mine?!?

3.) Is there any additional information I should learn about whilst trying to make my networking application (File Transferring application) work? or any links/PDF's I should check out?

These are kinda just things I haven't found answers to, and I didn't know where to ask.

I am finally getting to learn web api with mvc 6, core.net or whatever they call it. Why do all the example show the repository pattern data access layer? I have not used that for several years.

One year ago I made a resolution to do one of two things: get serious about learning neural networks, or finish one of the side projects (markdown based wiki with some nifty features). Didn't do the first one, and got the second one to about 50%.

Not really happy as I did not complete any goal. Still some decent work was done and built an open source parser. So, I guess I am 50% happy.

What were your achievements this year? Did you achieve 100%?

Can I use some other screen by literally disassembling the whole cellphone and do some hakabuka? Or, is there any way that I can access the phone although it's locked and the screen is not working?

Got an offer letter today and have to decide by tomorrow. I don't what to do about it. The offer/company is good but not awesome. Should I wait for something better or should I accept this. I don't know, I am really confused.
