Person: I want to learn to code neural networks and cool AI stuff.
Me: Look into Python or Lua.
Person: Those are too hard, I'm going to use HTML instead.
I got out of there as fast as I could. 😅11 -
So I just got rejected for a job for being too introverted.
They were very impressed with my advanced and broad technical knowledge but they said I'm "too introverted to hang out with cool, young people". That's ageism and that's illegal. Anyway.
I have more knowledge than most senior specialist devs (I've worked with them and I know them) but just because I'm a reserved and thinking person, I'm not welcome in this society of idiots and I don't get a job.
Two words: fuck society.46 -
Classmate: Oh, are you programming? You know, I'm a really great programmer... You can practically call me a hacker, because of my skills. I can't brag much, because I'm too modest for that.
Me: Cool! What languages do you know?
Classmate: I know how to use scratch.
Me: ...16 -
Student next to me tried to be cool and opened a terminal window and said to me: "I'm hacking someone." He was just running "apt-get update" ...11

Person: "I'm using Ubuntu. It's my first time using Linux. It looks pretty nice and it works for me."
People: "Eww. Loser. Ubuntu sucks! I'm a Linux god."
Person: "I think PHP is fine and has improved."
People: "Yikes. Don't use PHP. Everyone hates it."
Person: "I like using Angular. It gets the Job done."
People: "Boo! Use React. Angular sucks!"
So there you go, kids. If you wanna stay cool, listen to other people's opinion and their way of thinking. No need to really immerse and try out the tools that seem to work for you.16 -
My little brother (still in school , learning security and pen testing): i found a bug in a website , it returns an xml file instead of the web page , i reported it to them and i think i'm gonna get rewarded like 2k $ for it .
Me : cool ! Show me .
Him : shows me his phone ...
Me : wait , gotta rant this .9 -
Ms fanboy I used to know used to brag about his 10gb of Skype history.
What he hears: I'm so social and cool and stuffs.
What I hear: I've given about 10gb of personal data to Microsoft and several intelligence agencies.
It's all about perspective.12 -
Hey everyone! Huge apologies for the the delay on this - devRant++ is finally working on iOS! For anyone who tries it please let me know if you have any issues and I'm happy to help solve.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us out so far, we really appreciate the great response and have more cool things coming soon, non-devRant++ things and devRant++ things, so stay tuned!16 -
Client : your design is not cool. See this ^
*showed me some pretty neat designs pattern*
Me: which type do you want for your application.?
Client : All are pretty cool. Isn't it?
Me : Yes. But you do not need all of them. Right?
Client : Yes.
Me : So, which one.
Client : I'm confused But, this will do.
Me : Sure?
Client : Yes, very much.
After 3 days.
Client : you know what, earlier one was simple one but, best one. Easy to understand. This is (new design) making it complex. I need previous one.
Me : (I knew you'll say that, a**hole.) Just go to setting and select theme section to earlier version.
Client : thank you man.
Me : (You are red listed in my book you a**hole. Say anything else to add/edit and then see.) You are welcome.6 -
So I moved from being the TL of a small team to a member of another team a month ago.
A dev from the old team sent me this today morning. He also sent some examples of what he found "cool", and tbh I'm pretty proud of those modules. I tried being very modest there, but I'm very happy 😅8 -
Website Intro: Hello! I'm here to tell you how my life changed since I learned to build websites and became independent blah blah blah

A : What you do for living ?
B : I'm a Software Engineer
A : Hmmm what ?
B : I do IT
A : Ohh, so you do IT. Cool

My Neural Network can recognise handwritten digits!!!
It's my second try at NN so it's faaaar from perfect (or maybe even good), but hey, it's something and only with High schools, I'm pretty satisfied with the results. If you've not seen my previous post, I'm just trying to learn NNs in C and am doing just really basic things.
Still I'm proud of my progress!
Now I'm looking forward learning some library (OpenNN + OpenCV seems cool) and trying more advanced stuff, wish me luck 😆14 -
A fucking wasp bit me and now (after heating up the affected area thoroughly) I'm keeping it cool like a true nerd.9

Python: "I'm platform independent"
Me: "Cool, can you set the TCP keep alive to 1 second"
Python: "Go ask the OS lol"

I have coronavirus. Went to ER because I couldn't breathe Sunday night. Thought I was fucked. I decide to try to work a couple hours today because I'm getting restless. I'm an associate and have been on a project about a month. No prior software job.
Anyway. They ask me to clone a repo and run some tests. Cool, I can do that. They give me another example to look at to make sure I'm running the test right. Except the test files aren't attached to the email nor is the path to them provided.
I ping the other associate developer on Skype and ask for the test files and get a passive aggressive response that they're in the email. No, they're not you fuck stick, hence why I'm fucking asking you, and given that I almost fucking died a couple days ago, you should be fucking grateful I even logged on. Motherfucker.
Ok I feel better now.19 -
At a friend's party, I met one of the guys I've known from High school, and talk about what we've become:
Him: ...so yeah, now I study CS, I code some C, I dislike Java, blablablablabla I'm coding some OS and embedded software, blablablabla, and you, what do you code in?
Me: Oh, I learned everything I know by myself, still learning, and I'm mostly doing some PHP and Javascript. Doing websites and apps is cool.
Him: but those aren't programming languages? I mean, you can't manage memory, and blablablabla-
Me: Ó_Õ * Quickly dashed my ass off to talk with some ladies and boozed myself to forget what I just heard *30 -
Life with Windows 10:
An absolute nightmare. My oven doesn't work, Washing machine started rattling, toaster toasted more than it was supposed to toast. Every time windows updates it restarts my TV in my living room.
Then I met my neighbour. He lives a very happy life. I always wanted to know his secret ingredients.
One day I invited him to my house and he saw my Windows machine. He immediately insisted that I install Linux so that I can be happy and cool like him.
And that's the day my life changed. My oven started to bake beautifully, my washing machine was spinning at full speed.
Linux changed my life. I'm now part of the cool kids. Everyone loves me, embraces me.
Is your life hard? Are you not being noticed by other cool boys/girls? Are you having pain in your back? Remember:
Whatever bad happens, it's Windows 10's fault.8 -
I'm really tired of the comments like "Winblows" or "iShit" or "MicroShit."
Like cool. You don't like a company's product. Congratulations! You're entitled to your own opinion. But try to be less obnoxious it about it please and thanks!18 -
It's a funny story. When at the gym I usually wear t-shirts with tech companies logos, from companies I've worked at. This guy comes to me and asks if I'm a programmer. Turns out he's also a programmer and we began chatting every time we were at the gym at the same time. Some months later he joined the company I work at and we're now colleagues. He's a pretty cool dude.1

I ranted about my coworker trying to shoulder surf me last week.
Yesterday, he bought a mini Monster energy drink fridge and put it under his desk.
Me: "Oh cool. I don't have to go all the way to the kitchen to raid a fridge now :-P"
Him: "I'm gonna put a lock on it."
His Boss: "You know he teaches a lockpicking class at the hackerspace, right?"
Me: *headphones back on"4 -
(sorry if someone's already shared this)
Very true though. I remember very clearly when I was around 10 years old, wondering what all these random symbols on a keyboard were for and what type of person would use them.
I guess I'm that type of person; never would have guessed at the time that my fascination with technology would lead to where I am now.
Anyone here have a cool story to share about why they decided to become a developer?4 -
Our working hours are from 9 to 6 which is the standard in Malaysia (I'm not malaysian )
Yesterday I came in around 10AM and my boss took me to his room as soon as I arrived.
Boss: If you were in school and you come late what do you expect to happen ?
Me: get punished, I'll compensate by working an extra hour today.
Boss: well our clients aren't available at your extra hour and I'm struggelling with a big client you're supposed to ship the rest of his site and golive today and he's freaking out
Me: yh well his site is done it just needs final QA before going live.
Boss: oh its done already?, cool cool. Anyway you shouldn't be late you're not Malaysian and being late doesn't run in your genes like them.
*ops manager (Malaysian) walks in*
*boss confused*
*ops manager looks him in the eye*
*boss looks at the ground*
* me giggling while walking to my desk*3 -
How a regular convo with non-devs usually go:
"So what do you do?"
"I'm a software developer."
"Oh, so you're like... a hacker?"
"No, I build apps."
"Nice! So like facebooks and stuff???"
"Not exactly. Different things, mostly tools. It depends."
"Ooh...cool...Like what?"
*proceeds to spend what feels like an hour trying to explain what I do for a living in the simplest terms, while the person just blankly stares and nods, pauses, then finally tells me their crazily infeasible app idea.*
"So whadaya think?"
"Hmm...sounds good 😀👍"9 -
It's my first day on devRant. It's been hilarious so far. Everyone seems really cool and interesting.
I'd post a rant but I'm more tired than annoyed by anything right now.
Cheers from Argentina!7 -
Worst part of being a dev: "we need this done by the end of the week"
Me: "ok what are the specifications?"
PMs: "not sure yet, we have a meeting with the client on Thursday."
Me: "cool, I'll look at it Monday."
Don't come to me with deadlines before you know what I'm building. -
My job is pretty close to ideal.
-manager is technical/proficient
-hardly any meetings
-I'm trusted to design solutions to problems
-I'm trusted to implement those solutions
-Discretionary time off
-Decent pay
-We make cool technology7 -
Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30
-
I started with Notepad++ (and continued like that for a while)
Then I tried jetbrains webstorm, I tried atom. I tried VS. They all have their cool stuff but I was never fully satisfied.
Now I tried brackets. I just opened a project I'm working on rn and started coding a little.
Half a hour passed and I still didn't notice that I had a light theme.
Yes. This is it. I'll stay with this editor. It just feels right. I just need to figure out how to use tabs not spaces...
(picture says just my opinion)31 -
Skype, on my laptop, updated the other day. It was like: 'Oh hey we're downloading skype for windows 10!', and I was like 'oh yeah? cool! ... wait, I'm not on Windows 10 WAIT WHAT ARE YOU DOING NO WAIT NO STOP'
And now it doesn't work. Yay!3 -
I have no words to describe how I'm feeling these days. I have to do a C project for uni.
After a couple of years dealing with web dev, javascript, typescript, angular and stuff, for the first time I have a project where I have to deal with only two problems:
1) my code
2) my machine
No tools, no bloated libraries, no webpack, no json configurations, no tutorials.
It's just me, vim, gcc (actually nvcc, it's a cuda based project, but still) and the cuda manual.
I feel I'm actually building something.
Plus, the guy I'm doing the project with is cool with this stuff and most important he's open minded.
I'm happy9 -
"Hey I am a programmer too! I can code anything, I bet I'm better than you!"
-
"Huh, that sounds cool! What languages do you like to write your programs in?"
-
............ "English"
🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂
True story by the way, some guy I just met did this. I was not sure how to react. Should I laugh? Should I cry? Should I kill myself? Should I kill him?10 -
Hating WordPress is cool these days, but:
1) Shitloads of themes for clients to choose from (I'm not good with designing and where I live you are more likely to meet a unicorn than a front-end developer that can code).
2) Non technical people can understand it's admin interface without lots of explaining.
3) Huge community makes it extremely easy to find answers even when looking for pretty specific stuff.
For me it's a valid option when making something simple.18 -
I'm 4 days old to this company. I spent 40 minutes debugging why the internet is not working. I asked the IT Guys for the support and they said everything is good.
So why the fuck is the internet not working? I rant at them. The IT Guy told me to calm down and then he will help me. So I calm down and again went to ask for help. He said that he will check it out after breakfast.
It's been more then an hour and he hasn't returned yet. I'm going to complain to the Boss when he comes in. This is not cool man.11 -
What if the long term goal of @trogus and @dfox is to create a developer army, hell bent on the destruction of project managers and clients everywhere (except the cool ones).
I mean I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just wanted to... You know.... Raise some attention.3 -
Heck yeah, I finally have a Raspberry Pi Zero. It's so cool and small and cheap and I'm gonna make so many groundbreaking things with it!
*20 minutes later*
O, nice, it comes with Kodi. I suppose that's good enough for now.
*3 months later*
chirp...chirp...3 -
Yay, it's Monday!
And as Monday's go, there's a prod deployment, cool beans! 30 min later it's done!
So why the rant?
Because I'm on FUCKING ANNUAL LEAVE YOU BITCHES!!!!!
Fuck it, it's done, I'm going back to bed.rant can't catch a break work is it to much to ask for i just want a day off no time off for the wicked2 -
So a friend approached me about joining an internship. Said you'll learn php, js , jquery and bootstrap. I'm like okay I'm already learning this stuff, cool but is there a stipend or something? She says no but I'll have to pay 5000₹ (72$).
I said "ni🅱🅱a if you're paying, that's not sex that's prostitution" and noped the fuck outta there.
Its just sad how many students with no skills are actually paying to get an internship nowadays.13 -
For some reason the office I work for is paying for a designer to become a front end developer and she gets to take the classes one work time. Any time I want to further my career or pay I have to pay out of pocket and it can't interfere with work. Additionally I have to deal with her asking me every other day why I use Sublime over something else.
Basically I use Sublime because I spent too much time researching new things to try and learn yet another editor. If you wanna use brackets, cool, if you wanna use atom, cool, if you wanna use notepad, cool. I don't give a flying fuck what editor you use, you're writing CSS, I'm writing PHP, if you can count to 4 spaces, and not look at my code, I'm not going to scream at you.
She comes in each day and sits at her desk watching video after video on beginner HTML and CSS asking me mundane questions breaking my concentration at least once an hour.
I know we all started somewhere but Google was my best friend and should be yours as well.7 -
Is it strange that I'm getting more constructive advice from the Devrant community than the co-workers around me?
No lie, I discovered gistboxapp, vue.js, hacker noon and a bunch of other cool stuff through here.4 -
GUYS I DID IT
AND I ONLY HAD TO LOOK AT THE ARCHWIKI FOR GRUB INSTALLATION
AM I COOL NOW
(going to install to my computer a little later, don't worry i'm not done here)8 -
This is a ways out because I can't find LED filaments thin enough to simulate this, but if/when I find them, how difficult would it be to program a controller to have them map my circulatory system, with them pulsing in time to my pulse? I want to do something cool with my arm, and this keeps coming into my head, but I'm freaking out over how difficult I'm thinking this is going to be.
Ideas? Either on how to do this, or what else I can (reasonably) do? Friends irl want a rocket punch, I want a flamethrower, but anything else?68 -
Thank you Google for reminding me that if I start my commute. RIGHT NOW. I can be at work in time for 07:24.
When the fuck have I ever been at work that early? Just because it's morning and I'm awake doesn't mean I'm fucking rushing of to work.
I LIKE TO NOT STRESS IN THE MORNING AND BE COOL AS A FUCKING CUCUMBER.8 -
So, I'm a CS student in a third world country. I love coding and I think i'm pretty good at it.
As I'm kind of poor, I'm pretty much constantly looking for any job I can take, and I've already done a dev gig at a software sweatshop here doing mostly PHP, JS and Android/Java... the dev experience was cool, but money was absolute crap ($1.5USD/hour at the current rate, working 9h/day Mon-Sat, did it while in vacation). Better than min wage in my country but still, looking at the numbers I see from programmers all over the world... it was practically working for free. The real problem is almost every dev job here is similar, so I was looking into going remote but every opportunity I see is for seniors/people with 2-3 years experience or more.
Can you give me some tips on getting a remote job as a student/recent grad with little experience? What would you do in my position? Any input is greatly appreciated!17 -
Just wanted to deaign a typography for each popular programming language. Ideally the font matches the language itself. Initial ideas are: a playful candy font for JavaScript cuz it's so easy and fun to use, n a gothic C++ cuz it's like this epic, powerful (maybe sometimes terrifying) language.
Wouldn't it be cool if there's a set of these? Any professional designers here (cuz I'm just a hobbyist)? Or any thoughts? What should your favorite language look like?9 -
"heh, I'm gonna instal this package".
Installs in 10 seconds.
"wow, this status bar looks cool..."
Installs in a split second.
"just one apt install before going to this really important seminar."
It takes almost half an hour to download and another half to install.
Aptitude fucking reads your thoughts...3 -
New job on the horizon after being unemployed for a couple of months. Moving away from full-stack a bit to focus in on front-end stuff. Cool. Cool, cool, cool. Expect rage-filled rants in the near future 👌
Taking some time off was beneficial in all kinds of ways: got out of long term toxic relationship, got in betterer shape, learned stuff I'm actually interested in, mental health improved massively along with self-esteem, and I reconnected with friends and family. I'm actually enjoying life again. Don't get me wrong though, I had to claw my way out of a pretty dark hole... But I'm starting to think I fucking made it. This is a new start and I'm excited.
Fuck being in a toxic relationship.
Fuck working a job that is killing you.
If you're reading this and feel stuck: you deserve better. Listen to your gut, only you know what kind of life is good for you. It doesn't matter if it's a good job by every possible standard if it's making you miserable! A relationship exists to help you grow, to give you energy, to cultivate love. Sure, you'll go through bad times but if it's pathologically bad it won't get better on it's own. Trust me, I waited years for things to get better.
Anyways, good luck with whatever is challenging you right now, big or small. 😘6 -
After two years... I finally was able to quit my job.
I'm finally in a cool job, with a great team, with a cool project (from scratch! )
I have to learn Spring and Vue.js, knowing that I never tried any framework of these languages. But I really want to make it, I didn't suffer for two years, just to be beaten by a stack :p
Thanks for the ones who commented on my rant a few months ago, telling me to keep hoping for a better job. I got hired three days after the end of my previous contract, and I couldn't feel better now!9 -
!rant
Devrant makes me feel like I have tons of friends. Every new message my phone is vibrating 😅5 -
I saw an article about being able to set your phone to silent with your Google Home device. "Wow that's cool. Hey Google! Set my phone to silent."
Forgets about it.
This morning I noticed I was getting messages on Snapchat, but not getting any notifications.
"Snapchat is a piece of fucking garbage." (Still a true statement lol)
Half an hour later, I remember I set DND on and never turned it off.
Just here to say that I am a fucking moron.
I'm Stux and thanks for coming to my TED talk.4 -
Boss coding.
Boss not fan of tests at all.
"Hey I'm doing all of tests" - boss to me.
"Cool, are they automated? Or do you want me to implement'em?" - me to him
[long speech about why tests are irrelevant including "...once I tested, it is tested, we dont need to have automated tests."] *im teaching you because you dont know voice*
Please, help meeee5 -
I really hate to have a non-technical Scrum Master...
He makes these long meetings to explain EVERYTHING to him and ask us help to be on meetings with clients in case "he over commit us" with more work.
I've had cool Scrum Masters but not like this dude that is a pain in the ass...
PS. he's good friend of the boss... so I'm sending him videos about what his role should do 😕
PS2. Fourtunately, he's about to be switched to another project soon.5 -
So I'm job hunting and trying to beat ATS systems like the cool programmer I try to be.
Same company, two postings - first position I sent my resume to, rejected me after a day. Second position that I optimized my resume about 2% more, immediate interview request.
Here's the kicker, interview is done using an AI.
So basically I spent time trying to beat one robot just to be video interviewed by another robot.
Welcome to the future ladies and gents.7 -
Ok so I was talking to my computer science teacher earlier and he said that he would rather use vim over PHPStorm for creating a laravel project. WTF!
Normally I would be cool with it, but he has pushed faulty code to git over 8 times. I'm just done.8 -

Last night I had a minor hiccup with a iOS/Android CI service I absolutely love (BuddyBuild), so naturally I contact their support to address the issue and ask about potential new plans. A couple minutes later I find out I'm talking with the CEO! Turns out he's a really nice and receptive guy who cares a lot about their service!
How cool is that!? It was nice to tell him how much I've enjoyed their product and about the headache it's saved me!3 -
I wrote my first line of code at 12. I fell in love with it and continued. I'm 25 now and I'm a software engineer. I don't even have time or energy to work on personal projects anymore. Writing code isn't a hobby anymore. It's a means to survive. Why/how did this happen? When will building things be fun again? Before landing my first job as an engineer, not once did I consider salaries, equity, atmosphere, nor any of the other amenities (or lack thereof) of code as a profession. But, I don't even know when any of that fell into the picture and they've managed to suck the novelty out of a really cool pastime. I'm essentially a well-paid robot. Who did this? What's happening? What can I do to find the freedom I once had? When did I become just another cog in a machine? Should I try my hand in business, bent on making a lot of money so I can retire early and have time to experiment again? Is that unrealistic? Should I buy lottery tickets every paycheck? We only get one life and I realized this. I'm panicking because I know I'm not enjoying myself and that I'm not on track to leave the world better than it was when I was born into it. So much loss. I'm grateful, but this is not cool at all. I want my hobby back.15
-
> My company started posting things on LinkedIn. That's cool.
> My company started asking us to like and share said LinkedIn posts. Okay.
> Since I'm already on I decided to update my LinkedIn profile following some advice I've seen and including some key words. Coolio.
>> Now I keep getting recruiters wanting to be added to my network 🙄 not cool.
I've seen so many posts about recruiters being annoying on LinkedIn and never understood until now. I think I'm going to go back to having a crappy profile so these people don't find me7 -
Me to gf: hey hun look what I built! (Shows off new project)
Gf: (sees video playing in background) oh that's so cool! Did you do that? (Points at video)
Me: no, but look at this! (Shows off feature)
Gf: oh... well that's great hun, I'm so happy you are doing what you love -
Using circuit simulator (can find it on itch.io) and recently built an 8bit adder as you can see below.
Pins on left are IN and pins on right are OUT.
Just wanted to run it by some of you because 1. circuit simulator is fucking cool, 2. I'm not sure if I got the basics correct.
I attached an imagine of the 8bit adder along with the subcircuits if that interests you.7 -
AHH! There's so many cool things to program and so many ideas! not enough time to learn. Right now I'm trying to create my first mobile game in Unity using C# and a note taking app for Android with Java, it's melting my head!6
-
Guy sitting next to me sees me coding, gets excited, and asks "OH, THAT'S COOL... what do you do?"
In my head I'm thinking: I... CODE.... ur watching me code.... I do exactly what you see me doing!
Not knowing how to answer, I just end up staring at him for 10 seconds.3 -
Cool, I got psx working great on arch :D Took a lot of tweaking but so far the graphics aren't too terrible and no popcorn sound xD which is surprising given the old hardware I'm using.3

!rant (kind of)
I have the bad habit of suggesting "awesome" and "cool" features for projects and stuffs.. (Mostly just for fun and won't give a lot of value to the project, but would be cool). The less fun side.. I'm the only developer (in most cases..)
Me: Hey, wouldn't it be cool if the user could do this or that, or if this was implemented etc.. ?
Boss/Leader: Oh, hehe yeah, hmm.. *thinking* [a bit later] .. You're right, go ahead, implement that feature..
Me: .. Damnit..
But hey, on the bright side.. It's an extra feature! :D4 -
Today's the day! We're having a "Christmas lecture" with one of my favourite professors, I'm excited!
And afterwards: Punsch 🍹
My prof is so cool he has his own meme:5 -
Yeah I'm an adult. No, it doesn't bother me that 6 years ago on the school trip I wasn't cool enough to be invited to the girls rooms eventhough my stupid friend was. Doesn't bother me one bit7
-
Wow, I think I might be closer to done than I thought I would be!
Double buffered console library, works cross-platform with support for color! Color was a challenge because of the differences between Linux and Windows but I think my solution was okay!
The only thing I have left is reading input and I don't think that's going to be terribly hard! Then, I'm gonna bind it to Lua and make really cool console applications like a portable console notepad lol.
Pic attached.5 -
Do you fellow devranters know some cool tech/dev/programming RSS feeds you'd like to share ? I'm bored always reading the same few ones.5

I'm coining a new scale on how to rate a manager:
The BTCD rating.
My currently one was at 4, now I'm still counting...
It stands for: Beers To Cool Down (after a meeting).8 -
Best/worst career choices.
Worst: working overtime and performing awesome feats of superhuman strength to the point of being burnt out and bitter. Turns out I'm just a human being. Cool.
Best: learning, implementing, pushing my comfort zone, and sharing/learning with others. Standing by my design decisions and seeing them blossom into elegant/robust solutions is so incredibly satisfying, and kinda scary. Believe in your abilities, yo. -
I'm on windows 10 and I want to access the sound settings window to disable a speaker. I press the win key and as I start typing "sound" the first result that pops up is "voice" settings. So accurate. Thanks Cortana, very cool!8

1 on 1 meetings with manager throughout the year
Manager: You're doing really well! Keep it up!
Me: Cool, thanks!
1 on 1 meetings with my manager a month or two ago
Manager: You're still killing it! I'd really like to see you challenge the status quo since you're the newest on the team. I think we could benefit from fresh perspective.
Me: Ok, cool, I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable so I'll do that.
Me: *starts challenging process, team structure, and company norms in meetings*
Manager: *confused pikachu face*
1 on 1 meetings now, right before performance management
Manager: I really need you to start picking up more important work. You're not performing well relative to others at your level, and I won't be able to represent you well during performance management.
Me: 😐10 -
A: Hey, let's brainstorm for a good name for our new hipster coffee.
B: Ice-Coffee!
C: Cool-Coffee!
D: Karacho!
A: Take my money!

Why is every company so BAD at working with spaces in passwords? Just trying to setup Hulu on my PS4, apparently I forgot my password? No, my password had a space in it. So maybe Hulu's just one of those companies that doesn't allow spaces in passwords? Wait no, I can log in with no problems on my Switch or PC with the space. It's just SPECIFICALLY the PS4 app that doesn't allow spaces. Cool cool cool.
Like, am I missing something? Is there some reason it's harder to hash than other characters? It's just an ASCII character, it's not like I'm copy/pasting in some fringe unicode shit. Some companies straight up ban it. Some like Amazon don't recognize it as a special character, while demanding I use a special character. Why is this so terrible?4 -
Just had a great interview :)
The guy was really cool, asked actually relevant questions (my learning process, what I specialize in, etc), talked about the tech they'll be using and none of that "wHaT aRe YoUr WeAkNeSsEs?" bullshit.
He seemed to like me, he seemed to like the fact that I've been programming for a long time even though I'm in my second semester in college and he also seemed to like that I'm somewhat of a Swiss army knife, a jack of all trades but master of none.
I just I was a bit too informal in the interview but whatever. I'm not taking this very seriously, if I get the job I get the job, if I don't that's fine too.6 -
I'm working on an open source openvpn client for linux with a gtk gui and some cool features i have in mind. I wrote most of it's daemon and now i'm going for the gui. But,... the problem is..., i'm not a ui dev, so every ui i make is awful. I feel like i'm either stuck or have to choose one of my bad ui designs. what do you think i should do? how can i get some help?6

Just arrived in Sydney 2 days ago and reported for work yesterday. I looked at my laptop's clock and it said its 4:40pm. Cool! Another 20 min and I'm off.
I started fiddling around with my machine settings and noticed my Location setting is off. I switched it on. My time is updated to 2:43pm.
MOTHERF****!!!1 -
Now I feel bad for calling myself a programmer as a highschooler after seeing so many people shitting on the younger people. Goddammit I picked up programming because I thought it was cool and fun not because I want money or shit. I'm not the retard kiddies that overstate my ability. I like coding, I just like coding.
Now I wanna quit.7 -
I'm surprised how after using gulp task with minify js, css, html, smoosh and compress to gz file the whole web size down from 200kb to 20kb.
That let me think what a shit web developer I'm and what cool are those things.1 -
Got contacted by a place I used to be an intern at. They were looking to hire. Things are supposedly better now, so I highballed my salary expectations.
Surprisingly, they were willing to meet those expectations, so that's cool. However, a call they said was going to happen in the morning didn't happen until late afternoon.
Now I'm wondering just how much they've improved on the planning.3 -
Do you guys often get upset because of people that ask your job because when somebody asks me what I do for a living and I say "I'm a programmer" this someone says one of these:
1- Oh really, can you tell me HoW tO HaCk NaSa? (It's more often than you think)
2- WOW AWESOME SO I HAVE THIS BiLlIon DolLarS ApP IdeA CaN yOu ProGraM iT?
3- Hm... and... what do you do for a living? (Apparently programming is not a job)
4- Cool! Me too! Bcs once I MaDe ThiS GaMe I prOGraMmed WiTh GaMeMaKer (true story, and it was a flappy bird, but in the place of the bird it was chuck norris with a moustache instead.)(with lasers.)(Also it wasn't really working.)
5- Cool bro, so, can you take a look at my printer?
6- Hm nice * looks away with disgusting face * (that was my own family lol ;-;)9 -
I'm a little confused here. How are "viruses" different from "exploits" in Linux? The way I see it, they're the exact same thing. Although "exploit" makes it sound cool 😂14

(This happened a few days ago:)
First day on the job, last session of debriefing, HR comes to explain us some company policies.
Among them, they want us to fill in our working hours using a smartphone app (Android & iOS only).
I raise my hand and I ask them what can I do, since I have a Windows Phone.
HR lady's face is striken with sheer terror. Since then, I'm known as the "Windows Phone Guy"... 😁
I'm more than proud of myself. 🙂
P.S. We also got some cool Windows tablet to use during our training period...5 -
Becoming an 'almost' decent developer these past few years has made me realize how absolutely undeserved my ego was back in high school when I first joined DevRant and StackOverflow and thought i was 'all that' just because i did some programming thing stupid teenagers found cool in a random school.
At 24 I can say I'm happy for the internet knocking me down a few pegs when my 16-17 year old ego got out of hand. I feel it's really made me better in the long run.
Thank you DevRant2 -
I'm ashamed - but after knowing devRant for over 2 years, it is the first day i ever visit it NOT in the android app.
Nice website. Really cool.
but.
I
SEARCHED
5 MINUTES
FOR THE
FUCKING "+"-SIGN TO TELL YOU HOW COOL THE WEBSITE IS!!!!!!!!11!!
Please. Make it like 5times bigger.4 -
It's 23:00 and I'm too fucking tired to do anything but sleep.
How the fuck you people stay up all night and even develop cool stuff while doing so is beyond my understanding.4 -
me: Hey. This looks like a cool component that will save me lots of time and effort in the project I'm kicking off next week.
/* Two months later */
me: WTF was the name of that component that did that thing?
======================
I really should write things down more often.1 -
It's cool finally seeing real world feedback for something you developed and programmed yourself, I'm still in college and I'm trying to start a company with some software I came up with, and it's being taken very well from potential clients!🙏🏻3

So my country's president just decided that Turkey is too cool to set clocks back for an hour and it fucked all of my device's times up. And I'm not even sure how to convert time zones anymore.. And some devices (un) update time back to summer time so logs and notifications go crazy.
This is just a stupid idea that doesn't make the single bit of sense, are they that unoccupied to change time on their whim ?! You are the government first find a fucking proper solution for all the immigrants from neighboring countries and our unbalanced ass economy.. I'm so fucking pissed this isn't the first time our president plays with the country like this.
Uugh I just want to renounce my citizenship and reside somewhere else that isn't as fucked up as Turkey.. I'm sorry my ancestors that shed blood for this country. It's crumbling because of ignorant masses that follow a dictator blindly.1 -
DevFolio
This is a simple responsive portfolio website template. You can use it and make it yours by changing things and colours to your style and liking! I made it with a lot of hard work, love and of course with code :) I'm not a professional coder, but I tried my best to make it look cool and yet still keep it simple.

The biggest national televison channel (governmental) is doing a report about our company tomorrow, so i will be om TV
I'm a little nervous tbh
Do you have any cool ideas for some small eastereggs when they film my screen/the office?
A devRant logo somewhere is already planned ;)8 -
Really excited to learn Electron.js! I'm even opening devRant using devRantron on my computer right now, such a cool project!21
-
@retoor please tell your AI bot, that we don't need it to make 20 comments on every post.
What the bot is doing is pretty great and cool, just let it be for that one task. It's role as a spam remover is fine, but giving it a 'human' like persona, where it starts acting like a real person chatting with ranters is downright creepy.
I'm not even joking.21 -
Man fuck Facebook, log on hardly ever, feel caged by family who won't let me permanently leave, and when I do log on it's always something depressing shit.
My phone auto jumped me back to devRant and some ++ action and cool new rants...so much better, even with the down votes from the "I don't know what I'm doing here" crowd.5 -
Oh my God I fucking hate humidity
I've been without power for over 40 hours now. It's no big deal, but the fucking humidity makes it so fucking hot on my house and every fucking building.
It's about a nice and cool 70° f outside, but I'm still drenched in fucking sweat. Hopefully the power will be on soon.1 -

Can I just say that the devducks in the store are a genius freakin' idea? I'm definitely going to pick one up once I get some cash (which is never).
But seriously, those are really cool. And I want one. -
There's a group of people at my work who have mean girls syndrome.
They think they're cool, but they're actually pretty lame. I'm loving it whenever a junior comes to me because they're fed up with these morons.
Don't get me wrong, I can't do fuckall, but I love to sit and watch the world burn. Hell, I'm waiting for end of contract to get away from this hellhole of a job, this shitty small town and its close-minded people.11 -
*arrives to date on time*
Dude: so what do you do for a living?
Chick: I'm a software developer.

Google's new feature is to show you a quick overview of a medical condition and it's so cool, I'm having a little stiffy as a medical IT student 😍7

I'm starting a new job in a month!
I'm simultaneously excited and anxious about it.
Excited because I get to work on some new cool projects, use new tech, get great pay and benefits, and it really seems like a great place for me.
Anxious because I am currently on sick leave with stress, because my current job wore me down. Not so much the tasks themselves, but the atmosphere and attitude of management. So I have to hope that I can manage to get enough rest in the coming month that I am well enough to perform well at my new job.4 -
Hey there! New here. Just found this app and it seems pretty cool so far! Where is everyone from? I'm Janelle from NYC.17
-
Well. Fuck.
A sunny monday morning. The sun almost glimpsing over the horizon. I'm on my way to the office, taking a breath of fresh cool air. It is infused by the scent of sweet pastries.
I reach the office, but something is different. Why is the door slightly opened? Carefully I grab the door handle. I do my first step past the doorframe and wooosch. Thick and sticky stuff is running done my spine, finding it's way through my clothes. I feel so un-fucking-believably dirty in this very moment.
This should give you an impression how I felt when I had to change a DNS record in this completely broken setup for just a matter of seconds until the letsencrypt client renewed the certificate.
I'm feeling seriously dirty.1 -
My rant is that I low key hate devRant.
I'm 23, I'm an average software engineer, with some expertise in machine learning and with a decent job.
But seeing all your cool stories, skills and rants makes me feel like I don't know shit and everyone else is just more driven, skillful and passionate, taking care of a 1000 pet projects at a time and dominating their work routine.
Oh impostor syndrome, how I've missed you!
P.S.: I still love your rants, keep them coming.2 -
I have a more than average paying job. Cool manager who is okay with almost anything I do .The work place and colleagues are awesome but I'm not getting any work. My title says SE but all I do at work is play. Should I leave this place or stay and work on my side projects?7
-
>you can order Devrant stickers for free
>but you're not doing that
>'Man, why? That stickers are cool!'
>I know they are cool, but I'm here not for stickers, I'm here for funny community
That's what I think.9 -
I once thought that developing on WordPress was cool and easy. Now I see that it's a total abomination.
No more WordPress job for me. I'm gtfo.3 -
Another update on my 3D Software Engine:
Big progress since my last rant.
I now have a simple lightning with the Gouraud Shading Algorithm!
Looks really cool now!
Btw for those who are interested, I am following a tutorial but I'm translating everything to Lua/LÖVE2D. Here's the link to the tutorial:

Dear Target App Developers,
I think you left some debug code in your app...
I know you want to know if someone is using a VPN and that's cool with me, I get it.
But when I'm on a VPN your app constantly pops up a modal with my IP address every time I change a page in your app....
Might want to look things over a bit closer before you put it in production ;)2 -
"Well, I used Jekyll, but then switched to Hugo - but then that wasn't cool anymore so, I went with Nuxt, but switched to React, then Gatsby, then Next - and Now I just redid it in 11nty."
"So, did you ever write any blog posts? I thought it was a blog? The only thing you've done for the past 3 years is to update your basic website? That really could have just been HTML?"
(I'm not sure we can trust this guy to work on a legacy project...)9 -
Well, this'll sound like my first rant but my boss did it again. working on implementing a new feature. but I got sick last week and took some time to recoup. well come into the office todat, tell him I'm going to finish it. he says okay. 3pm comes around and I go and ask him for some help on finishing it. he says "check out the repository, I already did it."
okay. I'm sick. you want it done. fine. that's cool. but you made me waste literally my entire workday doing something you knew was already completed? WTF?5 -
Hi guys, I'm back!
I spent some time not using DevRant, I got a new phone and thought it would be better not to install it for some days. I had to do a lot of stuff for school these days and didn't want to geht distracted by amazing devs posting cool rants. So here I am, happy to see you all again. (Or at least your avatars)12 -
To be honest, I'm not as excited as I was 6-7 years ago when our tech industry seen a big leap, where these ML/Deep Learning algorithms were out performing humans, Apache Spark out perfomed Hadoop in distributed computing, Docker/Kubernetes are the new phenomenon in software development and delivery, Microservices architecture, ReactJS virtual DOM concepts were so cool.
Really though, I've come realise that these software trends come and go. All you need to do is adapt and go with the flow.3 -
One of my favorite things to do in Secondary School was to go around telling people I had written a program that uses the 'Doomsday Algorithm' which sounded really cool and always scared those who didn't understand it.
Truth is, the 'Doomsday Algorithm' is just an Algorithm that used to determine the Day of the Week of a given date.
I wrote this when I was 13/14 years old and I'm still super proud of it today.... well I mean I probably would be if I could read my own code.1 -
For this new project I'm looking into a neural network the same way neuroscientists look into brain and ngl, it's so fucking cool.6
-
Had a better day with i3wm and Linux. Did a lot of futzing with config files and got it looking pretty cool. My status bar is relevant, urxvt is transparent, I'm happy with it.
I would have taken a screenshot to share with you all but uhh... I don't know how yet. :/6 -
So for the past few days I decided to create my own personal blog because I wanted to start blogging again. Anyways, I setup a basic WP website (sorry wp haters xD) and installed a pretty cool free theme that I tweaked all over the place.
I was thinking of cool things to add while I'm just in that setting up phase and I really admired that whole dark/light mode toggling feature :) so I spent the past day or so creating my own and it works finally, even across different pages! So i thought I'd share. (Please excuse the BS posts, its strictly for testing. Havent actually started writing posts yet xD)
Url: https://notyourcode.com
Heres also a link to this terrible js file I wrote that controls the logic lol (I'll have to refactor quite a bit but it works)
JS: https://notyourcode.com/wpd/...
Any feedback is appreciated as I'm still just developing it :)14 -
Best: learned a lot of new things: vueJS, ES6, Bootstrap, CSS3 transitions and transforms, use of some cool JS libraries...
Worst: an awesome web page turns a nightmare because of endless "upgrades" that the client wanted (I'm aiming to finish it soon)1 -
"Cool, I can win fee stuff just for posting one of the many funny devRants I'm sure I have. 😀"
*2 hours later*
"Pffft, who needs free stickers... 😥"2 -
Am annoyed. Not mad, just very disappointed. So the guy I emailed yesterday about doctoral research positions hasn't responded yet, and this is causing me somewhat of rejection anxiety, specially considering recent events.
Honest to god, if this one fails I'm abandoning academia and research and making cool stuff. Fuck society. I could make so many useful life saving stuff, but they didn't let me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also, I'm enjoying my current minimum wage occupation. It's stressless and repetitive and I pay fuckall for tax. I didn't want to go antisocial, but I was driven here. So there. This is why y'all can't have nice things. 🎤💧8 -
First dev job is my current one.
I'm a software engineer in test, writing automated UI tests for web and mobile apps.
Its pretty great. I work from home with flexible hours. I have a boss but he doesnt manage my dev team, he just checks in to make sure I'm getting support, training and have all my questions answered. My dev team is myself and 2 other people, both of which are cool, and all the work is dev-driven.
Might just stay here until retirement, that sounds easy.2 -
Woah! Collabs! Nice.
I'm actually glad it's a paid feature. The sheer entitlement of people using free software asking for development help for free has always bothered me.
Cool idea, I hope it works out! -
Have any of you pitched a directional or starting idea to bosses and have it go well? I feel like I'm at such a low "worked bee" level is have to send a lot of time preparing data to back up the idea. Also not sure if I should go to immediate boss who is cool but a little reserved about ideas like this or boss's boss who has more leverage to put an idea like this in action?3
-
So my friend works in this big MNC company with good pay. He has had good education and certifications. He runs into a simple issue with someone's github project he forked and calls me for me help to debug the issue. Just helped him figure out the reason for issue over the phone.
And here I am technically "jobless" and loser in my relatives eyes because I'm pursuing self employment with no cool certifications to brag about.
Not sure if I should feel stupid for the choices I made in my life.2 -
When you're an idiot who doesn't know what you're talking about since you've always used Google, and people give you shit for it anyways instead of just being cool about it.
😧🔫
Come on guys. This is ridiculous. My school uses Google services, so I'm pretty much forced into it. I've never really ventured outside of Google because it works just fine. I clearly don't know what I'm talking about. That much is obvious. How about trying to be a good person and help me out instead of talking down to me and --'ing my rants and comments.
This is why humanity is doomed to fail. Half the population is comprised of complete fucking idiots, and the other half is mostly assholes.4 -
Why do all the cool things have terrible documentation?
I'm looking at you Gnuradio and OpenCV!
Doxygen doesn't count if you don't actually write doc comments!!3 -
"Don't worry I used to be a programmer, I'm a cool project manager"
...Scariest words I've herd in a long time -
Have you heard of "Thunder client"? Meh... That shit is cool. I came across it on my YouTube recommendations, installed and gave it a try. I'm probably not going back to postman.8
-
Statistics. Tbh, it is way more. Didn't use the codeium plugin for a long time. Regarding key presses i'm in the 0.10%. Longest streak is not impressive. 21 on codeium and 40 on github or so.
At this moment I'm very happy with the plugin, it knows me completely. * tab tab tab *. Almost always knows what I want to do. It advanced a lot last year, I did quit a few times on it last year for few months because it often sucked. Now it's perfect. Especially under VIM it's very cool!2 -
I have a random question. Does it make me a less of a developer if I say no to a embedded side project proposed by a friend?
I mean I'm all into side projects n building something cool but hardware and embedded stuff isn't something I like or feel passionate about.3 -
Ok I'm officially losing my fucking mind!
I've been trying to solve a connection bug that only occurs in production which is cool if THIS FUCKING APP DIDN'T TAKE 30 MINUTES TO DEPLOY!!!
Been busy for 4 hours and I've only been able to test 4 minor fixes. -
Anyone got any cool arduino/pi projects they want to share? I'm currently iteratively building a self-hydrating cactus that measures the soil moisture content and sunlight and logs it to my server, just because i can, then waters the cactus for me if it needs it.4

guy creates very cool looking, advanced css effects library that went viral
guy puts it up on GitHub
guy writes a ranty post and pins it to top the of issues with stuff like "i'm not going to make this a module or library that can be installed, and also don't try because i've already created a seperate repo for that" ON AN OPEN SOURCE LIBRARY
dude, you already open-sourced it, people are going to use it however they want
idk, just found this to be a very weird vibe, thought i'd share. thoughts?13 -

me: yeah that's cool what IDE are you using for C++?
guy: like an editor where I write the code?
me: ......yes?
guy: hold on, I don't know what it was called

> I'm laughing a bit uncomfortably because I'm not sure whether he is serious or not
> guy opens up .cpp file in word
> so many questions

Hey ho, some dev from Rakuten Tokyo here? Could do an application for it. Want to know if there are cool developers 🙃
But need to move from Germany to Japan and I'm a bit scared 🙁
I wished a while ago to life and work in Japan. Currently I have no real roots / bindings in Germany. Except some friends.
Should I try it or not? 😣3 -
what it's like when someone doesnt use "mm/dd/yyyy" or "dd/mm/yyyy":
"I need a name for your reservation. It can either be base64 encoded or a sha3 hash"
"Yeah, I'm on my way, how many light years is it past 404th street?"
"Oh, cool, my birthday's coming up, too. How many eons away is it?"9 -
Checked mails and saw bunch of newsletters from the same company.
Me: huh? I don't remember subscribing to these. *scrolled down* here it is, (button to unsubscribe from these emails)
*Clicked and got redirected to their feedback page before unsubscribing.
Me: Cool, just need to provide feedback, not a big deal. *gave feedback*
Message reads : DONE. Operation failed. Due to technical error
What!! I'm gonna block the shit out of you!!1 -
I just switched from Arch to Fedora...
I know I know that all the cool kids use arch, but right now I'm not up for checking out random gdm bugs or some other manual tasks. I need a stable, fairly supported and well maintained distro and fedora just works!11 -
It's sad when I see a seemingly cool job and it says something like: "required 69 years of professional Java experience". Why lock the opportunity to a certain technology?
I haven't used Java professionally but I have used it throughout university and I can get by. And I'm always willing to learn. Weird stuff!2 -
In all the companies i worked at so far, never seen any employee (in any department) above age 50..maybe the ceo or some lawyer, but thats it.
Where do all the 50+ ppl go in tech?
I'm not sure the tech world will be what it is now even in 10 years.. but I'm just wondering do any of u guys think/worry about where we'll work when we stop being young and cool?
Looks like it's either u start your own business, which not everyone can, or..
what is option B exactly?!?17 -
I have a pretty successful project on github
Which I don't think is necessarily my best achievement but all the stuff I do at work is not open
I used the project as a way to learn bash scripting and it kinda caught on.
Sadly I'm not a sys admin or anything I'm more of hardware/embedded engineer but it's still cool to have one of my projects being so used. And I got to learn a little of bash along the way 😁 I now feel super comfortable in a terminal and reading man pages to figure things our which was a skill i lacked previously. I definitely learn better by doing and fixing mistakes along the way -
?
I am working as intern with a super cool startup. I love working here.
But, for the past few days I've been busy with college, exams stuff. This has affected my work severely. I'm constantly past deadlines etc.. The startup understands the fact and also puts no pressure on me for to show up every day and decreased my workload.
College work will be the same for the next two months. I don't want to underperform at the company, at the same time cant do away with my college too.
It's like a relationship where you love the girl a lot but are genuinely too busy to spend time with her.
I'm meeting my supervisor today. I need a subtle way to let him know of the same. I know this would mean me leaving the company, but I want to join them back after two months. Or at least be a work from home, part time employee.
I'm in serious need of some help.9 -
Ever had a coworker who thinks you are his driver ? I mean it's cool that you want a ride and I'm willing to help but every single day ? I don't even like him2
-
I'm so tired I can't even do my personal stuff that I wanted to do instead of actually working. But I'm getting paid anyways. Working is kinda cool1
-
Working from home is a cool experience for me, but video meetings are a hassle. Not because of the nature of the meeting, but because I need to be sure that certain giant pillow is not visible for the webcam.
Also, for some reason I'm the only one with a stable connection, so there's a large overhead of asking and nobody talking, because we don't know what just happened3 -
A new subsea internet cable between the country I'm in and where my server is, went live a few weeks ago
The rsync from local PC -> remote server went up from avg 500kb/s to 4mb/s
the subsea cable website says they're aiming Nov/Dec launch so it's probably in semi-live stage rn but still cool 🫡2 -
Can't decide if I should join this nice internship or let myself enjoy this summer and rest a bit, as I burned out a bit this semester with studying and freelancing.
Why is it so difficult to decide..
The internship is at cool place with nice tech and I feel like its a nice opportunity to grab, but I feel like I need the rest too.
And I have to decide tomorrow. I guess I'm terrible at decision-making sometimes Ffs..3 -
I guess my story is not really cool, but okay, I lost my job as a Digital designer (Yeah, I actually have a bachelor's degree in graphic design, I'm an impostor)
I lost it because I saved enough money to travel to Japan and I wanted to stay at least a month so the company didn't like it. after coming back I got a job as a content editor, I just copied old content from an old website to a new one, basic html and css, not even responsive design, then I got really into it, and bootstrap came along, the company opened a new department "Front End" so I got in, I learnt responsive design and Jquery, really loved it, I went back to Japan for a month and a half, keeping my job, I liked it, but I quit.
I now work as a remote front end and I feel stuck, I'm very comfortable as remote, don't wanna go back to an office, but it seems I'll have to, can't find any opportunities to improve remotely, and I feel like I'm missing what the "cool kids" are doing.4 -
I'm leaving my current job in a week. What is a great prank I can pull off on my team before/after leaving the company?
I'm more interested in a long con which plays out slowly after I leave (maybe on April fool's?) Please share if you got any cool ideas or experience.
Context: I designed and built a web app which is used to manage stuff (CRUD) related to my project internally.
I would really love to hear some funny and non-destructive suggestions.9 -

Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.

Current boss is best boss.
Seriously though, he's a great guy. He has a lot of knowledge technology-wise, especially in electronics and will explain things to you without tiring if you don't understand them.
He lets me run my thing which is cool and letting me run too freely/not taking enough time is probably the only thing I'd criticize.
He seems to have a similar mindset to mine which makes it (most times) enjoyable to work with him. I like him personally - though I'm sometimes not sure whether he gets my somewhat weird humour. -
This week I'm all sorts of determined. It great.
I'm 18. Lived in a commune cult style campus religious place. Homeschooled and never finished highschool.
Just about all of my programming experience is self taught. Currently working as a full stack web developer for the place I'm living at.
I got a hand me down car and got my permit. I'm studying for my GED.
I want to build my portfolio and get an job. A degree is a cool idea but that's a lot of money I don't have.
I'm tired of passively living my life to other people whims. I sound really naive but fuck it.6 -
I'm doing a code review on a huge feature, basically touching every part of our authorization logic, and man... It's like my colleague writes his code to be as hard to read as possible. He's 60+ and you'd think he'd have learned how to write good and clear code, but nope. "Let's make it cool cool and I look like I'm a genius. And if I can spend 3 keystrokes less on a function I'm happy". Fuck me.
-
I got ca. 200€ and want to spend them on smth. awesome.
I'm interested in coding, electronic and tech in general.
Do you have any cool ideas / things you have bought that were worth it?17 -
I created an undefined rant. And it never received any attention. I shouldn't be surprised, but I'm a little surprised. Kinda cool. I could create entirely public but unnoticeable rants.
Kind of like my life
/s8 -
So I created my first Babel plugin today.
I think I'm hooked. This stuff is really cool, kind of opens a whole new world for you ☺️6 -
1) Search for "what is *language-I'm-interested-in* useful for?" on ddg;
2) Google the same thing 'cause you never know;
3) If it looks cool/useful and adds something to the tech I already know, I find a tutorial and follow it.
4) Trial and error on a new project that I will end up doing in another language because by that time I will find the new project so cool that I have to finish it in a language I use proficiently.
Every damn time. -
I can see life is meaningless and the only reason of my short visit to this planet is to pass on my vain selfish genes.
But what drives me every day is the exponential trends of tech and the looming technological singularity in the 2040s. And the prospect of staying alive for billions of years mapping exoplanets, contributing in every way I can.
Until we reach a Type 10 civilization and beyond, I'm not sure when I might want to hang up my coat.
Still if I can't make it to the singularity, that's cool also, after all life is meaningless.
I'm chill with anything.19 -
I'm getting started with Go (so cool so far!) and I'm trying to interact with Tumblr API using their Go Client...
Every time I google something about it I got the growing feeling that I am the first person who uses that client LOOOL2 -
Due to non work related shit I'm struggling to focus, I can still wrap my head around programming (even if with significant struggle) but I cannot keep up with cloud/containers/microservices/cool new tech of the day2
-
Holy shit. I'm on the devrant app and I just noticed that the scrollbar on the right does this weird worm thingy.
As I scroll up and down, the scrollbar size keeps changing. It's a cool effect where it twitches like a worm.
Is that an android o feature or something or did @dfox or @trogus add that shet.2 -
Someone tell me should I just give up because I'm stupid and simple shit escapes me or tell me bro calm the fuck down the guy is full of shit...
Dude says he can't verify 3rd statement in a nested IF - elseif logic because the third check for a false condition is the True condition in the first 2 statements.
So
If (mode) = manual and then
Data(g) /= Status1
Or else Data(g) = Invalid
Then
Do this thing that sounds cool
Elsif
Data(g) = Status1
And then Data(g) /= Invalid
Then
Do something else equally cool
Elsif (mode) /= manual
and then Data(g) /= Invalid
and then Data(g) /= Status1
Then
Do some less cool stuff
end if4 -
I'm a dev lead. I'm trying to consolidate a squad. There's a senior in it preaching the dream of career climbing and LinkedIn optimization.
Now all interns want to switch squads. I'm all for personal growth... but now everyone wants to be everything at once and productivity stalled. The job descriptions for our squad were perfectly clear, there's tons of different tech stacks... We can build a lot of cool things in this scope, and now no one can see them because Data Science or Data Engineering or Front-end is suddenly sparkling.
I'm tired.3 -
4th week of internship begins and today, for the first time, features that I programmed got deployed to the production server !
I'm proud of myself and I really enjoy working there !
It's challenging and at the same time really cool.8 -
Focus on your strengths and not your weaknesses. Oh and wear one of those Polo Pullovers, that way you'll say "Hire me, because I'm that cool kinda sexy but douchey as fuck developer you guys need in your life". That should get the job done or job gotten.
-
Anyone have any good suggestions for Java IDEs/Editors? I'm using Eclipse right now, and since I'm a student I can get IntelliJ Ultimate free, except I can't figure out why the run/debug buttons are greyed out...
Also would be cool to suggest good dark themes for whichever program you guys mention. And which OS would be good to use? I'm thinking Ubuntu right now
Plz don't hate for these dumb questions, I'm only a first year xD8 -
I'm fucking annoyed by low contrast bullshit all over the web!!!
Seriously, 1.9:1 contrast ratio for text on a documentation site?
FUCK YOU ASSHOLE. STOP THIS SHIT. IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD. IT ISN'T USEFUL. IT'S GODDAMN INFURIATING THAT I HAVE TO SQUINT TO READ SOMETHING THAT I'M SUPPOSED TO BE READING AND MAKE MY EYES BLEED!
It's not cool, it never was.
#contrastrebellion5 -
Working on a feature for about a month, give or take. And the whole way through, I'm feeling worried that what I have is very little in relation to how much time I've spent on it.
Well, guess what? I send the PR, and see all the commits put together -- and ONLY THEN I'm able to realize it's a WAY bigger contribution than in my wildest fucking dreams.
So now I'm thinking shit, I may have gone too far in a few places...
Anyway, the feature is not a 100% done: this is just the first step lmao. But I'm glad to get a break from this, though it was a very cool thing to get to work on, I definitively got severe tunnel vision focusing so much on it. Time to return to smaller bug fixes, let's go!
**ANXIETY INTENSIFIES FOR NO REASON** -
I learnt Java in 2 months from 0 (or 0.005), a year before going to college. (the full experience™️; not just String, while and sysoCtrl+space)
On "Data Structures and Algorithms" class, the teacher says something like "usually OOP takes like 2 years to learn completely".
Me in my mind: "Aaahh I'm so proud of myself. *selfhugs*"
Of course I knew the teacher was exaggerating but even if she doubled what she thinks, I still was in the cool range. B|3 -
3D printer.
fillament.
Pieces won't fucking stick.
Hey 3D guys. So... I changed to my second fillament rool, from white to black PLA.
The white worked perfectly, but I'm having lots of problems with the black. It just doesn't stick right on the table and than drags strings , with ends up fucking the piece.
I was printing at 200C, now upped to 220C and it just seams to cool to fast or something...
Cleaned the table, leveled like 30 times so far, using lots of airspray...
Do I need to up the heat more? Or may I already givint to much?
the fillament says from 220C to 260C, but I'm afraid the 3D printer can't handle arround 250C36 -
About skyRant. I really like what you're doing for establishing it as a third party app with the verify login thing. Technically there is no way for me to verify if the app I'm using is using that source code unless I built it myself, but still nice.
I do feel a bit odd about having additional data such as reactions on the skyRant platform. It's cool and all, but it degrades the experience for anyone not using skyRant. If I like someone's post with a ❤️ there is no guarantee that user will see it. Idk just some random thoughts, but very cool app! :)7 -
I'm at work but not working, at all!
Planning was done very badly, my team finished in a very effective and efficient way, even before the timeline(including tests and all other things).
It's been a month(or so) since I'm not doing anything, the start was cool, I know most of you are gonna say you envy this, believe me, I'm not, I feel useless and the sense I could be fired at anytime increases everyday (my personal paranoia).
What would Brian Boitano do?4 -
How to eliminate programmers burnout? I know that I'm still raw and I have more to learn but I just want to know from our dearest and craziest programmers/engineers/developers out here.
Cool to have this platform. Thanks creators!13 -
Why is it that when your making a perfect clients website he requests a really hard job 2 do, you do it, then they find something really cool on codepen.io and all your work is 4 nothing, I'm gonna start working for hours now.....
-
Apparently under the correct architecture, hopfield networks reduce down to the attention mechanism in transformers.
Very damn cool discovery. Surprised that I'm just reading about it.
Image is a snapshot from the article.

I'm slowly realizing how much goofy code I put in my branch and overlooked. This code review is going to be interesting...
Some examples:
import plots as lel
<h4 id="title">Crunchatize Me, Captain! </h4>
go.Scattergeo(name="cheese", ...)
webster = { ... }
The commit messages are even worse.
- 'horizontalize' link list
- very messily hack in <feature>
- partially refactor some of the awful code from previous
- Remove one annoying space
- make background color less annoying
- remove seemingly useless property
- minor fix
- Apparently it's possible to center a DIV. Who knew?
- Made some cool bar graphs
And then there's just a bunch of reverts.2 -
My CSS-only hamburger menu.
It's cool and all, just a few lines of code, but some days ago I tried to do a 2 sides hamburger menu.
Based on that I just copied it and changed every left for right. Worked. Like. A. Charm. I had to apply some z-index stuff of course but nothing out of ordinary.
I'm so cool. I'll upload it to GitHub ASAP, but it's not a priority rn. -
hey devs, i'm a web dev, i'm honestly tired with php, js, html, css, looking for some cool recommendations to learn n enhance skills19

VS Code ships so many features with every release that I'm having diificulties keeping track of all cool stuff1

Hey there everyone, I stay in a hostel which tends to misplace all post, so I always have everything sent home.
And today is the day I finally received everything from the last six months that was couriered to me from home. I'm so excited. Finally got the devrant and WhatsMyIP stickers, the GCI and Twilio tshirts (The Twilio one is just too good) and also some cool handwritten notes. Loved it.
PS. Exams also ended today. So yay!
PPS. Now rooting for the stress ball 😂4 -
I'm looking to learn a thing or two about automating stuff with python. Any cool ideas you guys have that I should implement?1
-
I'm organizing my leaving handover etc,
Just spent the better part of 2 hours making sure a graduate, who due to come on the project has the environment all set up, which is cool dont wana see them stuck,
But when u ask a mid/senior level dev how his set up is goin and he replys with his user name and password for a VM and says, "Work away at it yourself" ,
thats when im trying to hold back my inner Hulk and not lose the Fucking plot! Lazy Cunt! -
can you guys show me yours & your favorite personal websites?
i need mine to be unique and POP. right now mine has a linear gradient background that changes each time with javascript to look cool, but that's pretty much it. do you guys have any ideas?
i really want the user to be able to deepfake the picture of me in it by using their camera and tensorflow.js so that the picture will change to their facial expressions, but i'm not sure how to do that yet.32 -
Think I'm gonna branch out from dev for a minute and try my hand mucking about with my arduino kit! Any cool ideas guys? Robot Arm seems to be my prevailing will so far4

I felt inspired when I found out about Minecraft mods when I was in elementary school. I thought they looked so cool. I then went and actually bought a Java reference book but I never made any mods. Because Counter Strike came into my life and well I wasn't too proud of myself. But now I've quit CS:GO and I'm now committed to learning programing and I love it!1
-
I learnt a lot of my java background from Minecraft modding. I even went back a couple years ago when I was learning python and used the Minecraft python api to make my learning a little more interactive.
I'm always trying to find cool ways to apply programming to my hobbies, and hacking / modding / breaking the games I play it's a hell of a lot of fun and drives me to learn more1 -
I'm not really active here recently but thought it would be nice to share a cool website I ran into: https://refactoring.guru/design-pat...
Imo every developer who aspires to be more professional should have it in its bookmarks and ocassionally look into it when facing a code design dilema. -
Godot Engine - great open source alternative to Unity, powerful with basically anything you need for game dev and with great community,
VS Community and VS Code for more serious things, because they're pretty pretty powerful and extendable.
Oh and Krita is kinda cool, but I'm not much of an art guy -
I'm trying out Picolisp. Cool, I think, an OpenGL library. I'll try the example program.
(Clicks mouse on program window)
(A wild SIGILL appears!)
Two hours later, still trying to figure out why it's doing that, with Google and DuckDuckGo returning no helpful results whatsoever. This is very annoying.2 -
Would some Android devs please step up? At the rate all the cool apps are popping up on iOS I'm gonna end up with an iPhone again and I don't wanna go back to the ecosystem :/4

! Suggestion
So I've one project based on fingerprint scanner where the scanner came with sdk for c# and other language libraries.
So basically the user punches for login and logout I'm storing timestamp based on that to MongoDB. Now the only concern is when the user punches, it doesn't give any response like sound or light for telling it's accepted or not.
For that I've to do something so my guess was
1. Sound
2. Light
But, it's for library and they don't want sound. And my scanner don't have any extra light for that.
Anyone got any suggestion or cool idea?
(I'm using Nitgen Fingkey Hamster I DX HFDU06)4 -
Company is hiring a new PM (the first one, to allow me, the only dev, to concentrate on developing and not dealing with client crap) and I'm being allowed in on the vetting process.
Background: we maintain quite a few WordPress ecommerce sites, so part of the job spec was to be familiar with WordPress environments and the codebase, and that they have a least 3 years of PM experience.
1st phone interview: I'm an experienced WordPress developer, been doing it for 5 years.
Me: oh cool, can you show us examples of themes, plugins, and extensions you've created?
Guy: oh, no, I just install pre-made stuff.
Me: ...

"I'm going to learn and use <cool new Javascript framework/library> for this project!" then having to try and learn it, only for the new project to eventually use jQuery again.1

QA people hurt my head. "I found this issue" cool write it up. Proceeds to not write it up. "Hey this isn't working" yeah your on the wrong PR. For the 80th time. "Hey I just found out 4 days after deploying this key feature is no longer working" did . . . did you test it? I'm irritated. Probably because all of my tickets got sent to triage because I pushed them to the wrong PR. My life hurts. The burn out is real.

TL;DR: Brainfuck & Abstraction is so cool!
One of my dreams is to make a Mandelbrot Fractal with Brainfuck as the one on Rosetta Code.
I'm too lazy... So i'm writing a Compiler for Brainfuck.
At now i have 900 line of Python code and the operation VAR, SET, ADD, SUB, MUL with nested operation compatibility, IF, ELSE, ENDIF...
Probably i will doing it fast directly with BF but damn if abstraction is so cool!!4 -
I already developed with Angular, I thought it was cool. ReactJS, I thought it was good. But I've just discovered Vue with vanilla Javascript and I'm completely in love.9
-
It's so cool to see this many computer nerds just like me gathered in one place. I think I'm gonna like college, it's a dream come true.3

#Bug, I think
This is the second month in a row in which money has been taken from me to go towards the amazingness that is devRant, however, I do not have the cool [++] badge next to my name...
Not like that's the only reason I'm giving money, but it's a nice perk!!5 -
>where is the code that is in charge of that?
>that's the infrastructure dependencies job
>oh cool. So what if I want to do X Y Z?
>the infra doesn't do that
> well who is on charge of infra?
>oh that was {guy that left 2 weeks ago} and anyway that code existed for AGES
So now I'm drowning in foreign spaghetti because people didn't want to disturb the holy infra and just made workaround in the services themselves. Good thing I got my nylon overalls for maximum shit protection -
>start new job, not very professionally experienced dev
>spend couple of months working on a feature that is supposed to be an MVP kind of thing, be rushed to finish and told to cut corners because it's "just an MVP", still lose sleep and have relationship suffer (and ultimately ruined) as I try to not lose deadlines created by the boss with questions like "you can have this done by <very soon>, right?"
>frontend created by fellow developer is a garbled mess of repeated code and questionably implemented subpages, frontend dev apparently copies CSS from Figma and pastes it into new non-reusable React components as envisioned by designer, I am tasked with making sense of the mess and adding in API consumption, when questioning boss what to do with the mess I am often told to discard stuff that the frontend dev has made and just reuse his styling; all of this on top of implementing the backend feature that a previous developer wasn't able to do
>specs change along the way, I had been using a library as a helper in some part of the original feature, now the boss sees that and (without further testing the library) promises CEO that we'll add that as a separate subfeature, but the performance of the library is garbage for larger inputs and causes problems, is basically shit that might not have been shit if we had implemented it ourselves, however at this point CEO has promised new feature to some customers, all the actual sense of responsibility falls upon my hands
>marketing folk see halfway done application and ask for more changes
>everything is rushed to launch, plenty of things aren't implemented or are done halfway
>while I'm waiting for boss to deploy, I'm called up to company office by CEO, and get new task that is pretty cool and will actually involve assessing various algorithms and experiment with them, rather than just stitching API calls and endpoints together, it involves delving into a whole new field of CS that I never had the opportunity to delve into before
>start working on cool task, doing research, making good progress
>boss finally deploys feature I had been originally implementing
>cut corners of original boring insane feature start showing up, now I have to start fixing them instead of working on cool task, however the cool task also has a deadline which is likely expected to be met
I'm not sure if I'm having it bad or not, is this what a whole career in software development will look like?6 -
I'm creating my personal portfolio website and writing tag line for my header section but I'm not a native English person, I wrote this tag line to all the English I'm currently knew but it is gramitically incorrect and sounds to dumb can a native English speaker help me to write this in better way, Thanks in advance:D
"I'm a self-taught web developer and I've been doing web development past couple of years. I love to make cool stuff for myself and other people and am always open to learning new things, I currently pursuing my bachelor's degree."9 -
Hello council of elders.. or should I say "console"? Heh? Heh? I've been up for a long time sorry.
Anyway. I've started learning framework stuff. Angular right now. Been long overdue tbh. And I found a free course on udemy and followed it. It's cool and everything but I gotta ask...
Why can't I just use vanilla js and everything from scratch? I'm not sure if its the course I'm using (I'd appreciate more resources. Thanks) but I feel like it's a lot of effort. Is there something I'm missing or haven't learned yet?
It might sound stupid please let me know why it's better to use that than regular methods. Apparently it's meant to make stuff easier but I feel like it's just a lot linking files and making various things in different places.
Also. Other stupid question which might just be cause of the course but like... Is it mostly just for manipulating json??
Thanks. More questions to come soon!!3 -
// Not a rant.
A while ago I saw the community projects page, and I thought it'd be cool to create a wrapper for devRant in Java. A bit later now, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. If you're interested, please check it out: https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
Feedback is always appreciated!2 -
I think it's kinda cool that almost all of my work _could_ be done within a browser (IDE, docker, etc, etc..)
I'm happy as I am but I like the option5 -
I am learning CS for like four years and creating some cool stuff, in the meanwhile, one of my friends learns to play the piano for two years or so,
whenever he sees a piano he starts playing and everyone is amazed (me too actually), but if I show some project I'm working on for a month the reaction is usually: "Oh, nice bro" and that is it.
I'm not jealous (I really am not) but I personally think that this is really sad... :(3 -
The objective c stdlib is pretty cool, it's what backs the swift stdlib on mac. The collection classes dynamically switch backend depending on size and expected performance characteristics. EG a set of 3 items is faster to linearly search a vector, so it'll switch that out.
https://objc.io/issues/...
I'm not a mac fan but that's some truly artful engineering.
(reposting comment as rant coz I think it's cool)3 -
I'm at my limits with working from home. It started off really cool, but for a multitude of reasons I just need to get out of my house. I'm seriously considering renting a work space to at least go to part time. If anyone in the Denver area wants to go in on one, or is looking to rent out space, please let me know.3

I'm excited about flutter, looks like it will make cross platform mobile dev more fun.
Also dx12 rtx real time raytracing. It would be cool to work on it at work. We do animations for short movies at work and render times are huge now.
I'm kinda suspicious for both though. Couldn't check it out yet.1 -
I own a small software company and we are going to make T-shirts for all my coworkers, mainly programmers.
We are about 20 people and I wanted to make the shirts witg a small company logo, but the primary should be dev related text, slogans, jokes or illustrations.
But I'm out of ideas, being a programmer myself, I though Dev rant would have some cool suggestions 😎
Hit me!10 -
Hey Everyone! Just a question about C#
Does anyone know of a good learning resource for the absolute beginner of C#? It seems like the initial learning curve is absurdly steep, at least from the online training videos I've come across so far.
I'm asking about C# mostly because I have some pretty okay powershell experience and thought it would be cool to learn how to speed up my scripts dropping down to C# or .NET for performance.
Additionally, I wanted to learn a language I could use for actual app development, even though I'm a total noobstick. 😅10 -
I like docker. I think the technology is cool and I have a few ideas on how I can use it. But I sometimes think I'm too stupid to use it.
I'm currently trying to convert parts of my dev environment to use containers. But following tutorials on it confuses me and I get lost with it really quickly and get discouraged for a few days until I give it another try and fail again
Like fuck I already know I'm mediocre but this makes me feel like i should go into a manual labor field instead of software development6 -
What should I use to build cross-platform desktop programs?
I'm thinking of learning Java and using JavaFX. I'm staying away from swing since it's a bit old and I've seen people say it's outdated for today's standards.
Flutter desktop would be cool but there's nothing stable for that stuff yet. I've also looked a bit into Haxe but I'm not sure if it's any good.
What's your opinion?22 -
I don't think that it is a trend, but I'm pretty excited with the Crystal programming language. Ruby's cool syntax and a compiled language performance, sounds pretty good to me!
-
Daaamn.. Dagger.io is actually quite cool. Spent 2 days learning and building a dagger module for my project's ci and I've gotta tell ya - I'm lovin' it!

Q:
I'm making a dictionary/glossary for a website. Any cool open source solutions? Something like Wiktionary, but maybe a bit more styling than wiki's plain old black on white.2 -
Does anyone know a good todo app? I' searching someting _simple_, so no kanban board whatsoever.
I only want a way to do simple lists.
I'm looking for a mobile app, if it has cloud synchronization or even a desktop app, that's an absolute bonus. Also, while we're on that topic, self hosted would be reeeeaaaally cool (but again no must)6 -
`if (boolean)`
Would you tell a colleague that their PR needed to be refactored because they used parenthesis around an if block that didn't need it? I'm all about explicit order of operations and often add brackets and parentheses around things that don't need them. It's cool if you don't want to put them in, but does the PR need to be held up over this?1 -
What do you think about the Crystal language?
It looks kinda cool, but I'm somewhat worried about the lack of Multithreading and the beta status so far.21 -
on a 5 day rock festival vacation... a band with songs i barely know is on and i'm a bit high... there's a cool set of animations playing at the stage background and i spent the whole concert trying to figure how i could write each animation in opengl. i'll give them a shot back home, if i don't forget.3

I'm sick of managers treating the project I work on as a joke. First, a junior colleague, and now a junior QA. I'm the the most experienced and I'm only mid level dev. It's a very cool project with interesting technologies but I have no time to tutor people...
-
So, Dell's XPS 13 or HP's Spectre x360 13''?
Convertibles seem cool but I'm not sure if the feature is useful...9 -
oh ok
my SSI (that I got due to low-income family and being a minor) is still coming in despite supposedly ending after last month's payment
cool
if it's still there by the third week or so i'll just keep the $350 lol
if i keep getting paid i'm not gonna complain lol
(wait, the taxpayers might. SHIT)2 -
How do you find ideas for cool projects. I'm bored and can't think of anything interesting. Maybe you could throw some ideas here?3
-
Don't you love the neverending sprint?
You know the one that just inherits all the tickets from the last one? Each sprint packs on new cool features but along the way bug tickets come in for code you haven't even touched or wrote and you deal with them because they are blockers.
before you know it, sprint is over and ok to the next one. I'm pretty sure that is how this is supposed to work right?1 -
Anyone wanna start a project of some kind?
I'm a noob but I'm willing to help and learn along the way. I just wanna get as much experience as possible.
Doesn't have to be big but something cool and fun. I'd really like to make a game for Android and IOS10 -
I hate these hipster people who think because they write python they don't need to write any tests. Meanwhile the same people who bashes bash scripts ... GNAAAA1
-
Can't believe I'm about to say this, but:
Systemd-container is a rather cool SysD extension.
It allows me (Root on most servers) to switch to a customer account in a completely new session, setting all the .profile and .bashrc stuff up, so I can do stuff like control their rootless docker, and no longer have to add my SSH key to their authorized_keys file then re-login under their user.
Nice.1 -
Build a website for a private business: Cool.
Do it without being aware that frameworks are a thing and you shouldn't swear every day for a month to fix percentage layouts: Cooler.
Hear the customer complain about how much he liked a competitor website built on flash technology: Coolest.
Now I'm an iOS developer. -
I'm an Android dev but now I'm looking to also create cool stuff on Arduino anyone know any good tutorials1
-
Fuck you, BouncyCastle. I really like you but the way you have documentation. It's annoying. Nice name. Cool project.
Here, I'm write Java Docs for JUnit tests! For every damn test case!
So damn less documentation even SO said mind your own business! It's been more than 15 hrs. Not a single reply! I died a little today. They have examples but they are not really "examples". No passion at all for documentation!
You should watch and learn from AssertJ docs. OMFG @joel-costoglia sets standards for code style and docs before pull requests. The examples are LOTR themed for god's sake. I'm not asking for fluent API. I just want docs. What class does what. A simple program structure required.
Dyn4j, deeplearning4J have wonderful docs. Why not BouncyCastle?!!!!! -
I'm learning how to bundle with webpack. Cool. Exept that I don't have a single project in my portfolio that would benefit from any of it's features. Is this another "enterprise only" thing I can easily ignore in favor for the few <script> tags I'd normally use to hook up VUE or whatever?12

What do you guys think about the comma expression in JavaScript? I'm aware that due to it's (to some) unknown nature that it can lead to subtle bugs, but I have at least one good use case for it and wanted to hear reasons why I shouldn't use it for similar use cases, but also what would be some other cool (not necessarily "good") use cases :D8

Trying to update and add to my skills. Let's try angular,. Visual Studio sucks for this. Hey look vs code, this looks great.... Install, add some recommended extensions... Cool. Add eslint, hey look at these errors awesome I'm getting somewhere. WTF dont use var use let.. Ok why... Hours later and one drink, okay that makes sense. Change code.....
Unexpected declaration wtf why. Switch to var... Dont use var..... Fuck me... Google, read, google, read...... Wtf why why why won't this fucking work... I just want to code something using best practices2 -
Weekend is here ... Does it mean that work stops? By all means NO! And I'm cool with that ;-)
OS just crashed LOL. -
As V1.0 I found Allo quite fine. Google assistant is so cool answering a lot of questions that you would rather switch to chrome and browse Google search results etc.. About encryption issues, I'm not a CIA agent and I have no problem if they use my data to improve the app utility. That's what AI and machine learning are all about. And please, don't tell me that Facebook or other services don't store your conversations. What is missing is SMS/MMS support and a Desktop client, that's it.1

My friend said in front of manager 'look what this fool(manager) is speaking' to another friend.
Manager changes requirements on a daily basis and my friend lost his cool today.
Now I'm worried about getting implicated because he always comes to me for help.1 -
It irks me dearly when people look up to me and then copy me. I feel like they're doing it just because I'm doing it and they like it, but whether it's actually something good for them doesn't really matter. Kind of like using a coding paradigm because it's "cool", but it actually makes the code in your case hard to follow, inefficient and suboptimal.
I'm talking about life in general, but in coding as well.
Does this irk you guys as well?1 -
ugh what have I done to myself?
Today I started this codingame thing someone mentioned on here, but because I'm stubborn I've played every puzzle or game in bash so far...
So yeah, I'm loosing to all the cool kids using C++ or python even on simple stuff and I'm always struggling with this weird syntax - like "$" or not ... whitespace? parenthesis?
I mean I do like some bash but these games are really not made for it4 -
Any of you guys have a cool project that I can help with?
I think I'm good at JavaScript, nodejs and php
I'm new to github though I have several years as professional web developer2 -
Hey guys, I'm new to coding and DevRant. I was looking for some ground to learn some cool stuff but don't know were to start. What are some good languages to start? I know Python and VBA for now. What are some good sites for learning??4
-
I started programming with C# for a Windows Phone 8 app for my dad. Never finished it, but it sparked my interest for programming.
And mostly because I want my friends to say something like:"Wow, you're super cool" or something like that.(FAILED)
Now I work with C++ and I'm proud of myself, so I basically inspired myself to take on programming. -
Helloo Seniors! Just a short intro, I'm currently doing my Degree in Computer Science and I would be eternally grateful if you could help me out to come out with a cool/interesting title for one of my projects. The system I be creating is pretty simple, It would go through the list of students and what classes are they taking and it would detect if any of the students' classes are colliding with each other, eg: starts at the same time.11

Telling my non-coding friends I'm working on a cool personal project that I'm really passionate about:
Friend "Oh yeah sounds good.. That's, eh, nice, (Tension is building) ..LISTEN I HAVE THIS IDEA, maybe we can work something out? (Looking at me like they have invented the light bulb)
Me: -_-1 -
I hope there's a pill that I could take to master vim and tiling desktop in an instant. I feel so envious just by looking at a co-worker who's good with that and rocking a cool tiny 60% keyboard. I'm TOO damn comfortable with the normies way of computing.2

What are some good books to learn C# and the.net framework(newest)?
I found a cool project on github I'm interested in learning about, and sadly don't know those yet but I do have a few months before I go back to school. Learning time
Thanks In advance :)2 -
Am I doing something wrong in integrating bootstrap into my web design.
I'm just making some cool looking password reset forms and stuff.
1. Is it overkill?
2. Is there a better alternative?
3. Any good tutorials to understand bootstrap better than what I do know? (afaik it's just a collection of html elements and css styles)
4. I still have a problem with auto padding at different resolutions which messes up the alignments and stuff I'm really inexperienced at this.
5. I'm a noob at web UI and I want to add it to my skill set so I don't mind a good recommendation to some sort of path I can follow. (I'm alright with Photoshop concept designs, I'm bad at implementing them)4 -
I'm working on my side project. I'm using AngularJS and C# as my stack. During the process I made some cool angular directives which I'm thinking I should put up on github for the world to refine them and make them even cooler 😉and obviously use them.

Asp.Net MVC core
Me: this is really cool scaffolding out models.
1hr later: This really sucks have to bind models
1hr later. This is awesome only one nav bar to worry about.
1hr later this is total shit controller inside controller.
1 hr later wow I love MVC
Anybody can relate++
Feel like I'm loosing my mind. -
So for one of my uni courses we're writing arm assembly. That's pretty cool. What's not cool is the shit textbook written by the instructor, the asshat elitists on every single fucking help thread, and the fucking garbage documentation.
But hey, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I mean, after all, you should need to spend 5+ hours to discover where the fuck you should place a label for a god damn binary constant. Oh, and once you've finally got code that'll link, good fuckin luck getting it to load the address of that constant in a register.
At least I have a good explanation on why those guys on the forums are such fucking dicks: Stockholm Syndrome. -
Anyone here used Kivy before?
My brother is gonna try to learn Python soon, I'm will help. But I thought it would be cool if he could use this skill to make apps. Any thoughts?2 -
*not a rant*
I'm building a dashboard/control panel that checks on the status of a couple of dbs/apis/websites and need a cool name for it. Let's see how creative devrant can be?14 -
My college labs have iMacs for us to work with, which is rather cool. The thing is that they're 20-inch early 2008 with C2D 2.66GHz and 4GB DDR2. Add an old HDD and El Capitan to the mixture and you have a really sluggish computer that even takes time to open Safari.
I feel sorry for the ones that actually have to use them to develop os iOS with them... I'm just using them as a second monitor.3 -
So while I was being bored af in my school I had a freaking cool idea. The previous day I had tried out this thing: https://parsecgaming.com
It was pretty cool, I used my gaming PC as the host machine, and my android as a client, but the touch screen, meh....
So I have bought a USBc to USB 3.0 on ebay. Is USB keyboard+mouse plug n play on android?
Anyways, I'm gonna fucking game PC games on my phone in school and Its gonna be fcking cool.4 -
WSL seems really cool from what i've been toying with it. WSL2 seems like it'll be even better and the integration with docker(another thing i'm toying with) looks interesting. as far as i can find though it's only on windows insider for now, and I don't like having telemetry on my main machine.
So i spent a good chuck of my day just setting up Hyper-v, learning about nested virtualization (so docker will work), setting up a win10pro vm, and i'm now in the process of setting this up to be a virtualized dev machine (not gonna be a one use only system cause i spent way too long on this shit) and setting up docker and wsl
I don't know much about docker or WSL beyond just some random stuff i've learned to toy with to simplify some things i do. but maybe this will give me a cool way to actively learn more about them and maybe use them as more than just boredom toys3 -
I'm tired and stressed and it's friday
all my work is done that is required for monday, i should do testing and code cleanup, but i'm burned out so instead i'm gonna play with grafana and see what I can do with it, seems cool and something more interesting to do than code cleanup and wanting to cry2 -
Not exactly a rant, but I'm wondering where to go next with my learning.
I'm a c# dev and I want to get more into massive, scalable, distributed application development.
I sort of want to be with the "cool kids" i.e. open source, node.js, docker, scala, you name it. I get that open source moves quickly, but I get the feeling that every new framework is a fad.
Then again there is the corporate world with shitloads of money who are invested in .net and will very soon want people who can redesign their software so that their management can use all the buzz words.
I'm thinking into get into consulting and claim my slice of pie there by designing their solutions to go on the cloud so they can throw even more money at microsoft.
Anyway, I'm doing a bit of soul searching so feel free to throw in your 2 cents1 -
I have this theory that (most of) tech people (software engineers, developers, devops, etc) are very ok with a working regular smartphone as opposed to non-tech people.
I'm talking like, money not being an issue, we are cool with a Xiaomi or OPPO, etc. As other people feel the need to go for the latest and more expensive iPhone or Samsung.
So, WDYT?
PS: I'm still rocking my Xiaomi Mi A1, it's still performant for what I need it.10 -
Me yesterday: finally weekend is coming, I'll start the research for this cool app idea that I want to make for a side project
Me today: Suma1l you magnificent son of a bitch, that blademail surprise... (I'm watching Dota vods on bed while eating snack endlessly) -
Hello guy who develop the internal library I'm using
Just so you know, no, "idString" is not a cool name for ppl to know what they should use when you have dozens of differents ids.
And no documentation makes it less likeable.
Have a good day, you're making mine being horrible3 -
Turning to Devrant to search for researchers because THEY ARE NOWVERE TO BE FOUND!
Like i think research is cool, researchers create the stuff that developers will use later, but unlike them, there isn't any community or even indian tutorials.
As a new research student myself i'm both delighted and terrified.2 -
I have two potential offers. A is too good (pay, hours, stability, perks). B is decent (good pay but not so stable, no idea on perks but the work seems cool). Despite better work I'm not inclined to go for B. It is from my previous interview experience rant. People seem shitty, or at least as bad as the ones I'm leaving.
I don't wanna accept A either because they are expecting a longer stay and right now I'm in a state where I don't want to commit more than 6-7 months to anything. 😞
But I don't have any other offers and there aren't any short term projects coming up in my search.
Ugh.11 -
I'm looking for a new side project.. I want to write in Python or React, haven't used those languages before but want to learn them by doing something more or less useful :D
Do you have any cool ideas? Thanks a lot!2 -
!rant
Got amazed by last Doom, especially with the music, Mick is absolute genius.
Yesterday I ended up trying to beat '93 version at 11 pm despite I had to get up at 6 am because I'm getting ready for a trip ^^
btw. Doomsday engine pretty cool. -

I find it hard to think what to code and what to make. Currently I'm joining a contest and I need to come up with something that would be beneficial to mainframers. I've joined IBM master the mainframe 2020.
Can you suggest me on what would be cool to make? They want something awesome. And I'm sorry for asking you guys to help me.
Any ideas will be appreciated. Thank you :)7 -
got to love them assessment tests...
wondering will they figure based on my answers that I'm a psychopath who can burn to ashes their infrastructure ( remotely from other pc ) if they don't play cool
... or imagine after finishing one of those a msg apers on the screen : please remain calm and on spot, a swat team is dispatched to your location... -
I have recently come across jupyter notebooks it's pretty cool I'm wondering if it is something that I should be using a long-term? Or is there another tool I should look at but I am quite interested halving interactive notebooks?
-
Hey devs, I could use some help! I need to come up with something cool to parallelize for a course I'm taking and I'm all out of ideas. Should be about 3-4 days of development. Any ideas?3
-
I asked this question earlier but I wasn't clear.
I'd like some suggestions on a keyboard for my PC (running Ubuntu) and MacBook Pro.
I'd prefer it to be wireless but I'm cool with wired as well.2 -
I've had a linode server for a while now. And I'm only using 1% most of the time. Anyone have any cool ideas of what I can do with it3

How is your experience using twitter to follow tech community ? i'm tired of seeing tech influencers trying to promote tech stacks to attract sponsors and get some pocket money + people sharing garbage tweets so they can grow their followers base + people/companies trying to overengineering even small things so they appear cool, twitter become the new instagram for developers1
