Me: Did Sherry let you know that I'm leaving today?
Coworker: what!? No!
Me: yeah... I'm leaving.
Coworker: huh, I'm not surprised...
Me: what is that supposed to mean!?
Co: shit man, this job sucks, I'm not surprised. I'll be leaving right behind you.
Me: oh.... Um... April Fools... 😬
Co: God damnit.
Me: don't worry, I won't tell the boss how you really feel.4 -
Worst 'advice' from a college recruiter:
"O you want to major in computer science? Well our school is fantastic for women in comp sci because WHEN they find it too difficult they can easily transition to graphic design. How do you feel about graphic design?"
I decided that school was a bad choice.
Graduating this year with my BS in Comp Sci and going for my Masters in Robotics. Screw that guy.18 -
I have this old lady that I help from time to time with her computer issues.
She is nice, so I feel compelled to help her.
Get a call one day.
Lady : "hello, my internet and email isn't working, I've tried everything, could you maybe help me?"
Me : "Sure, ill come over after work and check it out"
*arrive at her house*
Lady : "you see, none of the web pages load, and my email refuses to sync. Should I call (insert isp name), or can you fix it?"
Me : I'm sure I can get it, gimme a sec.
*find the issue in a sec or two, dunno how to tell her about it, she isn't totally stupid*
Me : "Uhh, I don't know if you checked, but the ether.. internet cable isn't plugged in"
Lady : *realizes the wtf moment I'm having, obviously feeling very stupid*
Me : "Don't worry, happens to the best of us"
Obviously I lied a little, most of us would probably check the damn cable. Sometimes is just better to make people not feel like its their fault. People learn better when they don't feel like something is making a fool of them.
I have helped this lady with so many things that are just straight out of this world.
The one time she tried emailing 37mb tiff files over her 315kbps network.
Another time she said her email was not syncing, so I went to her house and clicked the "sync" button.
She even once phoned me to get their wifi password.
I just like helping her, somehow it makes me feel as if we all have something to learn.6 -
This is how I feel most of my client proposal start:
* It's simple, I'd like to re-invent <the wheel>.
* All I want to do is use <rocketship engine> on <old typewriter>.
* I'm too cheap to hire a full-time < DBA, DevOps engineer, development team>. Can I pay you pennies?
* I'm poor and broke, can you do this for free?
* I'd like to <commit illegal act> and be <legal compliant standard>.
* I heard it was possible to <fly 30 people to the moon> using <Ford Model-T>. Please do this for us.
* I <sold my house>, but now <I'm locked out by the new owners>. Please help.11 -
This is just my token of appreciation for the Skype devs. Can't begin to say how much I hate it. Your android app is a joke even after a host of updates, your desktop client is an even bigger joke (atleast Linux Beta version, I know betas aren't supposed to be stable but this is ridiculous).
You have reinvented chat clients to be extremely bulky, cumbersome and very hard to sync across devices. And you have managed to make it "buffer" more than a YouTube video does on a 2G network. I for one, am blown over by how you did that. And to top it all, you can't close the client on Linux atleast! All you did is just override the close button so that it only minimises it. Brilliant piece of work right there!
Why the hell can't you just close the client and run it in the background the proper way like everyone else does? Why does it have to take 20 *** seconds to open a message? The only reason I am stuck with this is some wierdos in the office still only use this. Get your shit together 😡
Ahh.. I feel much better now.18 -
Friend asked me, "How does it feel being the CTO of a startup?"
Me: "I feel like the main character in one of those cartoons where train, going full speed, is running out of rail road, so he takes rails from behind the train and puts them in front. And the entire thing is on fire. And everyone you hire is trying to put it out with gasoline."
Friend: "Doesn't your CEO help?"
Me: "Well... He had never seen a train before, and he thought they operate on magic and wishful thinking. And he never realized they need rail track to even run. So... not really"
Friend: "So, it's pretty bad, ha?"
Me: "It's great actually. We just closed our seed round. We're about to launch beta. I might even get 5-6 hours of sleep this weekend 😅"10 -

Job interview question about mainly a Java position : where do you see yourself in 5 years?
*thinks about how fast things are changing, have no idea what the web, programming will be and even where I will end up and feel like this question is a trap*
Me: in not sure.. A dev lead
- now -
After changing 4 time jobs I'm a dev lead in node js3 -
I just got handed a legacy php web project... Full of vulnerabilities... And it's using only mysql_ functions... Not only it's not OOP, there is not even a single class...
How good it's coded: User profiles are created manually by the frontend dev as htmls, and then the past php dev implemented them as links etc in the current page.
This is how I feel:5 -
Biggest terminal hack I've discovered till now which is so fucking obvious I can't believe I literally just started using it:
Executing the date command right before and after another command/series of commands to see how long shit takes.
$ date; command or commands; date
This is incredibly useful when rendering loads of data in screen sessions!
I actually feel rather retarded for only thinking of this now.17 -
Got laid off on Friday because of a workforce reduction. When I was in the office with my boss, someone went into my cubicle and confiscated my laptop. My badge was immediately revoked as was my access to network resources such as email and file storage. I then had to pack up my cubicle, which filled up the entire bed of my pickup truck, with a chaperone from Human Resources looking suspiciously over my shoulder the whole time. They promised to get me a thumb drive of my personal data. This all happens before the Holidays are over. I feel like I was speed-raped by the Flash and am only just now starting to feel less sick to the stomach. I wanted to stay with this company for the long haul, but I guess in the software engineering world, there is no such thing as job security and things are constantly shifting. Anyone have stories/tips to make me feel better? Perhaps how you have gotten through it? 😔😑😐14

Beware: this is me expressing how I feel about my programming/my skillset, and so on. It might be imposter syndrome but I am having a fucking bad episode right now and I just need to get this the fuck out.
I work at a distribution center right now. Can I provide for myself? Yes. Do I even slightly like my work? No I fucking hate it to the point. I hate going there every day, doing shit I don't like, not being able to focus on the shit I love but that's it for me for now.
In my free time I still am able to program a little but then the (I will call it imposter syndrome for now as I have no clue how to call it) imposter syndrome comes looking around the FUCKING corner.
*What the fuck are you doing? For real man, someone else could do that like way fucking better*
*Wow man your code..... there are so many people who would write that a million times better*
*You have re-written this for 10 times now. But seriously, this still sucks fucking balls*.
Fucking hell. Yes, at programming level I am still a junior, I fucking know that. But it fucking sucks feeling like anyone but you would do the shit you're making better anyways.
How fucking down can you get yourself. How bad can you make yourself feel through just a few fucking words/thoughts.
The only thing I am happy about right now is the fact that a very good friend is able to keep me at least slightly sane right now.53 -
Front end + back end = Project finished.
This is my first full stack application that I spent a month working on. It's a basic database that holds car information and saves it to a SQL db. I built this using Java Spring/Hibernate for my backend and Node.JS/REACT for my front end. Mariadb handles SQL requests. REACT handles token requests for secure login, that was the hardest part of this whole thing.
I was going to comment on how frequently I feel like garbage and an inadequate excuse of a human being, but today is my birthday and this is the best gift I could get, a finished project from scratch.
I'm 29 today devRant. And I work over the weekend before going back to school, but at least I fucking finished something that I started.
...thanks, for everything. 😄13 -

If you ever feel like having a good laugh, just watch a flat-earthers video/live-stream.
I can't understand how something like this can even happen, it's so insanely ridiculous.
HOW THE FUCK CAN A HUMAN BEING LIVING IN 2018 BELIEVE THAT THE EARTH IS A FLAT DISC WITH A GLOBE ABOVE IT.12 -
I can't be a teacher. Ever. For the sake of my student on this app, I will try to not generalize the entire class, but HOLY MOTHER OF BASTARD DEMON FUCKS. How the blazes is it so damn difficult to pay attention to the lecturer? Especially when he's nice enough to relate the information to the REAL FUCKING WORLD so they know why it's important?
I feel like they can hear my annoyance when I reply to "how long does the summary have to be?"
And how is 5 sentences the same as 5 paragraphs that are all supposed to have introductory sentence, supporting arguments, and a concluding sentence. That's at least 15 sentences if only one supporting statement is provided.
If this were any other teacher I was helping, I'd quit. But the fucker is intimidating and I want to learn as much as I can from him.17 -
Today I feel like a monster.
Due to the optimizations/automatizations I have made to the processes in my job, some low level employees are not longer required.... Ever again.
Their last day of work was yesterday, but I'm still uneasy if this is how life is now. If every job will be removed to be made by machines.10 -
How come the cat pet is on the floor?
From my experience they should be sleeping on the keyboard or sitting on top of the mouse.
@dfox, @trogus: I would suggest swapping this around. The cat should be on the desk all other items should be on the floor. I feel this would more accurately depict typical cat ownership.5 -
Post my vaccination break, I login to work today and this is waiting there for me..
My designer just dropped this note in our channel where we have our entire team including directors (my manager),
"I wanted to specifically give kudos to Floyd for creating the Confluence page for XYZ feature requirement.
It's so elaborate and very well structured 👏🏻"
And my Tech director adds to it and appreciates my efforts.
My TPM kept praising various new initiatives that I started and how it made him happy to see the progress + how everything was organised.
My skip level manager kept appreciating the work entire previous week and even in a meeting we had just before I started typing this post.
I feel like I have settled really well in this new org + started gaining trust of teams and leadership.
I need to continue the momentum before I start leading the product independently (a few more weeks should be good).
Now two things I am expecting in return, is good amount of international travel + good timely hikes.
And what's interesting is that my employer is known for these exact two things.
So fingers crossed.. 🤞🏻5 -
Today was the most fuckedup day of my internship as a software developer. I have this shithead manager who doesnt know how to explain the client requirements properly and keeps on fucking yelling at me for not understanding the requirement and not coming up with the right output. That asshole compares me with the other teammate as to how fast he is and how slow i am to even write 5 lines of code in python.(I am new to python). He has yelled at me in his cabin with the door open so that everyone on the floor could hear. Most humiliating and disappointing day of my life. I dont feel like seeing that shitheads face again. I just have a month left and i will be happy if the opportunity doesnt get converted to a full time. Todays events have made me doubt myself to a great extent and has left me disheartened. Ranting abt it makes me feel a little better.7

So recently we re-orged to a product vs engineering (yes, I meant vs, it’s contentious) organizational structure. One of the former dev leads got picked for product and went on this lovely ass-kissing spiel about how great this was in front of our new bosses. The next day(!) he was telling his old team what to do directly to his buddy the scrum master, who works for me and casually mentioned it. How am I supposed to run engineering and deliver if every P.O. can end run around the structure? I hate all this.
Also, if the new PE tells me one more time all my problems can be solved with SQS, I’m gonna explode. Not all dev problems are a nail to fix with an sns hammer. Asynch comms has its uses, it is not the *only solution.
I feel like I’m over reacting, and yet, I still feel rage…and happy to find an anonymous place to rant about it.11 -
This is how I feel while coding a system whitout tdd or any kind of tests, and it's the company's major system... Anyone else?4

I got a promotion at work!
Is it weird that I don't want it because I still feel like I have too much to learn to no longer be a "junior"? I'm happy that my hard work is paying off but I'm worried that this is how bad senior devs are made.7 -

This is the worst day in a while...
- The weather sucks
- I'm out of coffee
- I'm late for work

The gif below explains pretty well how bad I feel today and how much it hurts.8 -
I have had fiber for a week now and still can't get over how amazing it is to see this speed at my house. I'm getting 125 mbps download and upload coming from 6 mbps down/0.6 mbps up. I feel like I can do anything!10

100% honesty
I feel as if my friends from school are dropping me one by one and it's boiling down to my IT friends. I really like my friends and stuff but they're treating me like I'm invisible so I'm not posting this on instagram, not on twitter, and I'm not texting this to anyone, because I'm really starting to realize how big of an impact the life of IT studies has on me, and how amazing the community is. Thank each and every one of you for simply being here on devRant and I appreciate all of you.12 -

or better yet.... what even the fuck is jira?!?!?! I've only been using it for over a year, give me some time to figure out how to use it!!!!!!

!dev (Please, don't take this very seriously, I'm kind of burnt out)
I'm not having a good time.
I can't even write a post to properly explain how I feel.
I feel disappointed by life and by myself in many levels. Life is disappointing. I am disappointing too.
I'm having issues to focus, can't even write a couple of lines of code.
Time to listen to some emo lofi and write about how much I hate myself.
I wished I didn't feel these feelings.
I wished I didn't regret so many things I did or didn't do.
I wished I could fucking understand everything I read, but I don't, everything I read is gibberish, every paragraph makes me feel like I'm drifting in a storm.
I wished I was happy with my career, with my job. I wished I had a true friend.
I wished I could finish one goddamn fucking project for once.
I wished there was something that made me unique, but I don't think there's any.
I just feel like an ant, and that I don't really matter.
I don't feel like I'm someone at all, I feel like I'm experiencing a dream, and a rather boring one.
Programming used to be challenging and fun for me, but it has become this dull and stressful ordeal.
The internet has shown me that I don't matter really. I remember being a little kid and believing that the internet would not discriminate you, that right from the comfort of your house you could connect to people and be cared for, and collaborate in something.
But every year that passes I see that I was wrong. I have tried to put in time into people, I have asked people how they're doing, I have cared for their projects. But there's no reciprocation.
The internet itself has become a thing where the big fish only matters. The top 1k users will get 99% of the attention.
Fuck nurture, rule competition.
What's the point of creating a github project that you think it's cool? No one will give two shits about it, it won't make a goddamn difference whether you push it or not.
You know what fucking matters? If you're an apple or google developer and have thousands of followers.
Bla, bla, bla, I'm depressed...9 -
Everyday, I am amazed at developers like those here on devRant. I look up at you in awe and admiration, always thinking about how awesome your life probably is, even though you rant about it sometimes. I want to be like many of you in the future.
Thank you for improving our lives with whatever you are doing. I feel like this doesn't get said enough.
Meanwhile, University sucks (failed exams), but I am expected to graduate with good grades. Sigh. I also feel like I'm not learning enough of those things that I need to become a good dev and rather overly complicated math which I'll never need in my later life.24 -
😲😲😲
Holy shit, wow I did not see that coming at all. I've this is all I've ever dreamed of as web dev but now I'm not too sure how I feel. Edge gone, safari dying and Firefox struggling...
I wanted one web standard, not one browser engine.10 -
I feel my body is changing into greater entity that is God of Time and Space.
"How long does creating this feature takes?"
"42 mins and 12 seconds"
BOOM and its 42 minute, 12 second exact8 -
I feel like these two sentences go together somehow:

what the fuck
This is probably how a programmer poem would start.8 -
Ok peeps, this is it!
I have completed my contribution to community projects! Wanted to share with you guys...
I was so impressed/inspired with @ChappIO 's www.jsRant.com project that I wanted to create something similar.
So I created an XML stylized stream of rants, in dark theme.
It also reflects how I feel as software developer with my current knowledge - kinda derelict old school!
The underlying tech is Asp.net core 1.1, using my own .net core API wrapper.
So, here it is:

Lots of oof in one image.
I like how they had the audacity to say (and I fucking quote): "this is good news!"
I don't like to complain about sites generating revenue. I understand it is important and I even feel morally obligated not to use an adblocker. But all I will say is that the site has sustained itself for a very long time without the use of poor-quality and unrelated ads, and this feels like a lot more of a money grab than something the site actually requires.
Anyways, happy to see a -400 score on it. And I guess I can't wait to get Amazon ads on SO.6 -
Just saw a youtube video about what the author of the core-js library is going through.
I feel for the man, honestly, I could never work fully on open sourced software since I know how hard it makes it to pay the bills, and but a handful of developers can actively receive financial backup.
What seems crazy to me, is that no company has come forward as sponsors for his creation.
His github account is a wild ride:
https://github.com/zloirock/core-js
I looked around the internet, there is a lot of hate aimed at this man, which I think it is unfair.
Devs can be really mean spirited5 -
I started recently working for a big company, and when I say big, I mean really BIG.
Well, my colleagues are from different parts of the world, of course some names are harder to pronounce, so, let's say your name is 'Yagarishmakeshin', well, sometimes is easier(and I used to think friendly) to call you by a shorter name, for this example let's say 'Yag', you know, like Apu form the Simpsons, which is normal I think, people use to call me always by shorter names too and is fine.
Well, yesterday I received a complain from HR saying some people complain about this, it turns out this is offensive or degradating; I was also warned about not calling a girl 'girl', example:
- random girl at my team - So, I created this routine which is very effective and provides good performance
- me - Awesome girl, very cool
Well, Someone complain I call them 'girl' and is not fine.
I cannot tell you how frustrated I feel about this, is like, if you feel uncomfortable with a short name, just say it to me, something like 'Hey I prefer you call me by my full name' or something like that, but nah, you prefer to raise a complain like if I were a fucking predator or something; Also, I cannot retaliate or mention the topic, I need to change and pretend nothing happened.
Fuck you big corporations, and fuck you skinny stupid bitch15 -
What the hell happened to devRant?
So we have this person who is digging up old posts, harassing people (@LotsOfCaffeine here, me as well, probably more) and some fucking how is getting 14 updoots while obviously being, or at least portraying themselves as a misogynistic hater of everyone and everything. What the actual hell is up with devRant? How are there FOURTEEN OTHER PELPLE who AGREE WITH THIS PERSON. How many active users are we here? I'm sure 14 users is a pretty significant percentage of the active user base.
People, I feel bad for this person. I've been a bit of a dick to them and so have many more, but what the hell happened to devRant, the place where you went to rant about stupid colleagues and bosses, share funny coding stories and other bulshittery? We're turning into fucking 4chan with politics, sexism and racism being the main story line here. I dont fucking get it. I'm on the brink of just leaving. I'm so fucking tired of this shit...35 -
Worst part of being a dev?
For me it's putting myself into infinite loops wrestling with my own self doubt. Is this really how I want to solve this problem? Could this code be cleaner? Surely there's a better way to do this? Am I adding unnecessary complexity? Is this going to come back and bite me in x months? And so on...
In fact, most days I just feel like an imposter.4 -
!rant
Trying not to suck at code.
A good coder seems to be some one who does mistakes quickly and has strategies on how to resolve them even quicker.
The speed at which you create/resolve your problem is the experience curve at which you are learning.
How do you deal with headaches and frustration when spending hours on the same issue?
What are common efficient strat for debugging?
I know this sounds very generalised but i feel like it takes me days to do small things and need to take breaks all the time to relieve the pressure.
Any advice for a rookie?11 -
seeing these things make me very uncomfortable, I feel like reaching into the software and wiping it off, makes me wonder how much of a mess this npm ecosystem is going to become, I really dont know much of how these things work. I figured the issue could probably be the same across languages, libraries sitting atop libraries until the whole thing becomes unmanageable. I'll stop rambling now
that's the installation of expo-cli8 -
I was working on a project lately where I needed to convert an array of bits (1s and 0s) to floating numbers.
It is quite straightforward how to convert an array of bits to the simple integer (i.e. [101] = 5). But what about the numbers like `3.1415` (𝝿) or `9.109 × 10⁻³¹` (the mass of the electron in kg)?
I've explored this question a bit and came up with a diagram that explains how the float numbers are actually stored.
There is also an interactive version of this diagram available here https://trekhleb.dev/blog/2021/....
Feel free to experiment with it and play around with setting the bits on and off and see how it influences the final result.13 -
FUCK Y.O.U. windows 10 for making my pc not recognize mics on the front port.
Seriously i usually dont mind windows that much but really ?! Oh hello i noticed you changed your os version THEN LET ME FUCK UP YOUR DRIVERS SO YOU FEEL LIKE A RETARD NOT BEING ABLE TO TALK.
Worst is i feel like an idiot because i have no idea how to fix this shit apart from buying a new PC, aaaaand im pretty sure while trying to fix it i made it worse
FUCK IM A SCRUB. FUCK PEOPLE ON INTERNET AND THEM "It works". NO IT DOESNT !
And now i feel like a worthless dev because of w1055 -
I've been working with some new programmers now, trying to make this a place where people actually like working at. In my experience, most workplaces are bottom of the barrel shit, so I really wanted to try and make this the opposite, at least for the engineering team. When I hear them say how much they like working here, and how jealous their friends or family are at how much they are enjoying themselves and chilling with their coworkers and even their boss, it makes me feel so nice.
It might be a tiny company, but spreading happiness is great.1 -
RETARD MASTER: So how did you feel about this sprint DEV?
*nothing is planned, new tickets added each day and old ones removed - inconsistent sprint*
DEV: Well, it’s a bit chaotic, but it’s understandable. I’m used to it. Nothing’s to blame here. Client can’t produce their end of the bargain on time.
*3 week later*
DEV MANAGER: So RETARD MASTER gave a feedback. He told me you insulted him.
DEV: Can I please die now? Not funny.12 -

Why the fuck is this site blocked. How the fuck is it remotely adult content? ITS A GODDAMN WEBGL GAME. And you blocked is as being EDUCATIONAL. WHY THE FUCK WOULD MY SCOOL BAN A GODDAMN EDUCATIONAL WEBSITE?
P.S. for all those that know me, i made a website a year ago, during english class, and it got blocked at school (my goal was to get it blocked). Or so I thought. It turns out it didn't get blocked at my school, it was blocked across the whole county! I feel accomplished.12 -
I got a kindle paper as a hand me down gift. And I feel I'm reading so much more than before, now!
I'm starting a new small novel
A Wrinkle in Time, I'll be reading alongside my girlfriend.
I'm 52% done with a book called
Python Tricks: The Book
Literally coolest book I've touched. Contains a bunch of different tidbits about the language, granted most of them confirmed my understanding, but it's still neat to read and learn about them in a more rigorous setting.
I'm 13% done with another book called
How to Day Trade for a Living
I'm heading for the crypto currency exchange, but with a catch,
I'm reading another book called
Genetic Algorithms with Python
You can probably already guess where I'm heading.
I feel armed with more knowledge and I feel like this is a really great way to start the New Year off.7 -
It's not that my work is hard. Basically, all the work I do these days is something I've done before with a slight twist on it.
I just feel underappreciated.
"bUt u mAkE sO mUcH mOnEy dO uR jObBbb!!"
How much money I make should not suppress how I feel at a company. Two years without a raise, every company meeting is a circle jerk for the sales team, and whenever our work is mentioned it's "Great job to the PMs for getting this to our clients."
Fuck you guys. Lol. This is a team effort from all sides, but to put engineers last on the "kudos" ladder is just so shitty.8 -
My latest post about my mother made me finally realize the whole picture.
Five minutes ago, I send her a long message that describes how I feel. This message will be the very last act of communication that will happen between us.
This felt like a bullet coming one inch away from my head. Like SWAT team rescuing me from a predator's basement where I spent the last ten years. Part of me already realized what happened and is serene, part of me still can't get used to an idea that this was, in fact, the end, and no further harm will be done.
My future is bright. It's so nice to feel that she doesn't know where I live.2 -

I haven't felt joy programming for a while now.
My work is just tasks that can be done by a monkey if they understand how the framework works and at home I can't come up with any ideas that are exciting, challenging or useful.
I feel like all my creativeness is leaking dry having to deal with deadlines about implementing this text change with critical^3 priority and other boring shit9 -
My app is moments away from getting deployed into production for the first time.
This is how I feel right now 😓11 -
This belongs to the small bunch of things that makes me feel that life is beautiful.
For a pretty long time, I wanted to learn Haskell, and recently I really fell in love with the category theory. Now how exciting is that when you found that you can learn them both?
I just started it, and I guess it's a pleasure for any programmer who doesn't whine about math. It's free to read:

Or to build 😉

This is just a bunch of things I needed to get out that I’ve been holding in for a while now.
Recently I’ve found myself In this state where I feel so depressed, lazy, and just pressured to program in general. I feel like it comes from me dismissing my abilities a lot of the time and I get demotivated to do stuff but at the same time when I do sit down and code I get distracted so easily, I can get work done but I just feel like I’m everywhere.
I want to apply for positions but I’m in this duality where I both feel like I can or can’t do it, I feel like wherever I apply to will not be accepting to people that don’t have a big degree or a ton of work experience and that I’ll get fucked on it. I’m fucking anxious that if I do get a job they will be like “hey fucking do X” and I will have no fucking clue how to even do X, and I’ve had people tell me that they know for a fact I can do it but I still fucking can’t believe it because I just completely doubt myself because I have failed at things like learning certain frameworks or failing to make the things I want and having to turn to simpler projects first because I’m too overwhelmed by the scale and I didn’t do any thinking about it before hand.
I don’t know if I’m making sense at all, I always write out rants like this and I always just erase them because I fucking hate whining like this but I need to let it out before I go more crazy I’ve been holding so much in for a long time now and it’s not been good.
I just over all feel terrible, anxious, and unproductive and I want it to stop.5 -
dear female devs / haecksen, how many other female devs do you have in your team?
if not so many, how do you feel about it?
and do you get a lot of sexist bullshit or not so much?
would be great to hear your experiences.
the female quota among our devs is < 3% 😅
most of the time i don't think about it and just do my job and it's fine, but sometimes i think, it's a bit weird. also, there is this fear that people might not have trust in my skills. it can be good and bad to be "special"... anyway, having more female rolemodels / mentors / colleagues to have technical discussions with would be awesome.55 -
Hello everyone, first time ranter here! I have been studying Computer Science for 2 years starting September. The program introduced me to Java,HTML,CSS, JS and php. I feel like even though I am currently studying this I still do not "know" how to code. For example when I look at my classmates when they code it all seems so effortless and smooth, if they run into an issue they will usually solve it within the hour where as when I run into an issue I struggle to even see what the problem is. So the real point of this rant is, how do I improve? I am currently doing the #100daysofcode to get better but sometimes I feel so far away from calling myself a "developer" what is your road to the "developer" title? did you struggle as much as I am at the moment? or did you just sail into it like my classmates?14

this is mostly how i feel today. we're all aware not much actually changes, but y'know, we survived this year, we get to celebrate a new cycle and hope for new and better things4

Don't you guys feel like sometimes we make a huge deal in regards to what is basically grabbing a bunch of shit from a db and making it display on a flipping website?
I sometimes feel bored at how repetitive this shit is. Its the same shit, with various degrees of complexity to do that get data and post data or update data.
I dunno man, sometimes i just feel like there is too much for something that is inherently simple.3 -
DEPRESSION TRIGGER WARNING
Every once in a while, I feel depressed.
From who am i, where am i questions to what will i do in the future to sustain myself...
But what hits me so hard every single time is what will happen if i die...
So i disappear
From here.
As if i never wake up again from my sleep
It is like
Gone
I don't know how to explain but..
It terrifies me
Think about it
You... Poof!
Gone
From this world
And if you have no kids, well,
Gone. Completely

As a programmer I feel that i write instructions for the machine's heartbeat.
Single repetitive pattern to be performed for gazillion number of times.
And all that matters is how that heartbeat goes. As long as this one is fine, the next one should be mostly fine. -
It is exactly 4 in the morning and instead of sleeping i am crying so hard because the regret of going to college is eating me alive..... I feel like such a wasted fucking potential, a failure who can't provide money for my family in need because i focus studying shit i will never use for over 4 fucking years....... I can not fucking describe how much i regret going to college, i can safely say i would rather go and fucking die than go to fucking college........ Can't even sleep from this fucking bullshit i feel i am wasting my fucking life and losing my fucking mind on this.............14

I love to program — I discovered that about myself a few years ago. Beforehand, I only KNEW how to program. But then I discovered the power programming gives you to create things, and even help your surroundings. So now, I can surely say, that I love programming. Heck, I am even dating a very talented programmer.
But despite all the pleasure I derive from it, I feel lonely sometimes. True, there are millions of programmers all over the world. I also know I am not the only one who prefers coding over going to the movies, taking a walk, eating or sleeping.
Why do I feel this way?
My loneliness is a gendered loneliness, as there are not many women in my field. For sure, there are women who study computer science in high school or at the university, and some even work as programmers. But they are very, very few!
I often underestimate my abilities and feel intimated for no apparent reason

I have not slept in 28 hours.
I discovered Quantum computing, pubo and simulators.
I FEEL it can solve my business problem, but it is fucking time consuming to write this code. (In a good way).
I do not need sleep at this point, I need answers!
Anyone with good links to either pubo examples or a useful quantum algorithm, I’ll take it ! (not the random number… I have already run that on a real QPU 9Still no idea how much that run cost in $)!)31 -
PM in sprint review, after some colleagues complained about having to develop requirements on their own:
you are software engineers, your main task is to design software systems. this is the tricky part. coding is easy... it's a stupid task, i could do it, my nine year old daughter could do it.
shall i feel a bit offended? also i think, he is wrong... i also design while i'm coding, i'm designing all the time.
also, i love coding :( this is the most satisfying aspect of my job.
but then again, i heard there are people who code without designing... even though i cannot imagine how to work like that at all.7 -
I don't know how to feel about it. What story it tells? Python is so easy that even vandals use it or maybe someone bleed on the wall how much she/he hates python. Or maybe it is scream of inner Vandal closed in cubicle who works with AI and blockchain for life's. What is the story behind this?6

I feel really bad for the guy I'm currently working with. I have until roughly the end of August to upskill him in every aspect of 3 different iOS apps because once I move to a new project he will be the entire maintenance team for those apps. Feel like he is getting shafted so badly. The whole process has been poorly managed. The managers don't care how well I train him as long as it doesn't take too many man-days. And they are expecting that they can still pull me back in to help if he gets stuck even after I've moved. Starting to feel like I'm being taken for granted. Can't wait to get off this horrible project.

For all my friends here who have known me for years can easily notice there has been a drastic change in me.
I used to be confident. That shit was hollow but I used to laugh in the face of fear. I was ignorant and that ignorance fueled a lot of the much needed confidence.
Over the years, I learned a lot. The more I know, the more I realised how much I don't know. And for all that I know, I have to use the brain power to retain and implement it, else it rusts.
This image is of my 2021 goals that I drafted last December. Wasn't able to achieve the first, the last and the art one. But surely got myself surrounded by some of the smartest people I have ever worked with.
Now they have rightly said, be careful with what you wish for.
MY CONFIDENCE IS SHATTERED.
I feel dumb. Constant imposter syndrome. While I am learning every moment and there is no measure to it, I feel incompetent to an extent that I have started questioning how did I even reach this far?!
While, yet again I am the youngest in my team, my manager is bit micromanaging and agressive with OKRs/KPIs and tech team isn't very supportive creating constant friction (something I never faced with developers in my life because devs are my best friends), I fear how much more time will I take to ramp up in this new job and feel confident enough to tackle things on my own without constant nudge from leadership or different teams?
Or is it just that I have burnt out firefighting and lost the motivation I had?
After all, what does this all even mean?10 -
My university has a internal developed system, where everything is managed from e-mails, exams to personal data.
What I'd like most about it, they talk all day about Internet Security and store our passwords in plain text and if you press the "I've forgott my Password button", they even send your password unencrypted, plaintext via e-mail. (Hello Wiresharks)
I don't know how to feel about this, it just hurts :(1 -
I haven't been productive since the bs. (Refer to previous rant) And one deadline is approaching very fast.
My Christmas was ruined because I was anxious/annoyed/everything negative about the bs as well as being alone and stuck in a village. My new year has always been crap but this year it was extra crap.
Overall, I'm having none of the fun. My life is starting to feel like a deadend. I feel like I have to give up on my dreams to survive. And that no one is really on my side, despite whatever they say.
The ADHD rejection sensitivity is also heavily activated. Like I know that realistically I can fix this, but at this point I just want to break everything and let the ship sink.
I have lost time that I could be productive to this bs. And I wish nothing but misery for all those responsible for putting me in this situation. (I take responsibility for my mistakes, but not for how others behaved towards me)6 -
Well. Fuck.
A sunny monday morning. The sun almost glimpsing over the horizon. I'm on my way to the office, taking a breath of fresh cool air. It is infused by the scent of sweet pastries.
I reach the office, but something is different. Why is the door slightly opened? Carefully I grab the door handle. I do my first step past the doorframe and wooosch. Thick and sticky stuff is running done my spine, finding it's way through my clothes. I feel so un-fucking-believably dirty in this very moment.
This should give you an impression how I felt when I had to change a DNS record in this completely broken setup for just a matter of seconds until the letsencrypt client renewed the certificate.
I'm feeling seriously dirty.1 -
Because I didn't start coding until 21 I constantly feel behind, but the pure satisfaction from finally getting something to work or to see a project grow iteratively over time keeps the gears turning. The bad part is I feel like I am constantly stressed because of my feelings of always being inadequate. The thing is I didn't only have to learn how to code but I basically had to start from scratch tech wise. i had a decent acer laptop in high school and basically just web browsed and gamed with it. So needless to say most of my life has been away from a computer. Now I feel at a constant rush to compensate for my ignorance. I have slowly become more introverted because I feel like if I don't work on my skill set everyday I stray further away from making myself marketable; this has caused me to become more irritable and to close myself inside more. I want to make a career doing this and I also have the added pressure of not having a degree, so projects and skills are even more mandatory. I truly love programming to the fullest extend, but not having local friends to express code with and to bounce concepts and ideas off of is torture. But I try to keep my head up and make progress out of the day- if the will is there- so I can land my first job as a developer and actually make a living doing something that brings me a little piece of meaning. So overall there is a tradeoff of having added pressure, stress, anxiety and sometimes depression to build a craft that still has ages to go to reach a stage of maturity.10

I'm really into coding now for half a year. I really love that kinda flow when there pop up no errors and you work yourself through the code writing using trial and error. It's really addicting and the perfect evening.
But here comes my question: There are sometimes unsolvable errors for me (still not figuring out how to use firebase properly 😞). Is this stuff going to be fewer as I advance in coding, or am I just terrible at googling? To other beginners: Do you have often errors to that feel unsolvable for you?1 -
Seeing how cool the community's work stories here, and how they know a lot and how they work in organized companies makes me feel like an absolute piece of shit who's lacking a lot of industry skills.
Remotely working for a startup that lacks any sense of organization, CTO is a volunteering web developer who never shows up. A lone wolf I am. I never signed to be a lone wolf. A product that is based on an absolute garbage product that is in turn based on another utter garbage product. It feels so much pain every time I have to deal with that garbage that I end up watching some stupid anime instead. Decent salary for a junior, very friendly people, and a very empowering non-profit cause but still... technical side is just shit and I don't think I can keep with this.
Sigh :(6 -
I have noticed that C/C++ developers that deal with backend server technologies are very much likely to resort to PHP for some reason. I have noticed it from serveral developer friends of mine or simply by noticing how the topic comes along sometimes on web discussion forums.
I believe this is the reason why certain extension codebases that deal with php are(for the most part) exclusively done in C++, take Phalcon, written as an extension in C or PHP Swoole, which is written in cpp iirc.
I wonder what attributes does the language, or the tech stack as a whole has that would make this particular kind of developers feel attracted to the platform. Is it that is easy and widely available and they just say "fuck it, I don't wanna spend too much time in this shit" <--- which is a very valid point really.
Or them just having an innate preference towards it?

I don't know how many of you here will understand/feel what I feel but here goes nothing
I'm the kind of person who's very calm and like sitting and talking to a friend over using a mobile phone or something. I mean, it's not like I don't use mobile phones at all but yeah.
At this point, I think my smartphone is just a waste of time. Whenever I'm bored or feel lazy, the first thing I do is unlock my phone and randomly see something online. Even though I have nothing important. I feel like it's almost cutting me off from the real world. Maybe in that time, instead of using the mobile for nothing, I could go talk to someone, go for a walk, exercise, think, etc. I even see group of friends sitting in a circle, but no one's talking. Only using their phones.
And let alone socializing, I think you miss a lot of "me" time as well (oh I like meditation and shit haha).
I'm thinking of switching to a non-smartphone. But still we are developers/engineers/designers, and for us to stay away from technology is not easy when we're the ones making it. I love what I do but at the same time I also want feel life.12 -
Burnout hit me. I cant fucking function. I feel extreme tiredness. My brain cant think or work. In fact im feeling numbness in my brain! How can my brain become numb? Thats ridiculous! This has to be a mild burnout or some bullshit. Way too much excessive work and mental pressure. I need a break and this is gonna cost me at least 1 but full day of rest it seems5

I am strong technically, resourceful, with good analytical thinking, but I suck at comms. I lack patience and I struggle with communicating in a politcorrect business-friendly language when reaching out to other technical teams. I feel and behave as if they were all local folks, as if in a walking distance from my desk, when irl they [the client] may as well be on a diff continent
How can I improve? Anyone else had a similar problem? How did you overcome it?
Is this nuance going to be a problem in a career path past the senior chair?
What do you reckon?4 -
😒 I just found a new method of how to stay awake throughout the night without sleeping.... No coffee required
.. By 10pm
Start a project and name dictionary.py
On visual studio make sure you are not using internet because this is an exam and cheating ain't allowed..
Now start coding until it fully functioning and can generate random words out of predictions...
😩 Feel free to hate me after trying that1 -
A more interesting related fact is that this Tuesday I got fired and it was the first occasion that an event that impacted my career didn't have tenfold the impact on my faith in my own abilities. In fact, I didn't even really feel responsible at all. They were clearly looking for a senior with low self-esteem.
Now I just have to figure out how I'll feed myself for four more months before I graduate and get a full-time job anywhere around London.4 -
My eyes hurt everytime our backend guy gives me a new REST API to implement in our app and always the formatting of the json is something like this. Like why can't you just fucking format it properly so I won't have to look at my code and feel disappointed for writing such ugly code. All because your lazy ass didn't care to understand the fundamentals of how json objects and arrays work !!! It's been a month since I've joined this company and I'm tired of explaining why we should use the status code for failure checking and not this stupid pass/fail status flag. I don't even remember how many times I've brought it up but everytime I get reasons like "Dude, you know what our server is never going to go down or fail so it doesn't even matter". And at that point I feel like I shouldn't even argue with him anymore.3

Well I feel like an idiot thanks to my IT teacher. This guy, this fucking guy thinks that we’re seeing computer for the first time. He’s literally saying “You see this black bar on the bottom? That’s taskbar.”. It’s like he’s teaching 7 years old childs 😤
But the worst part is my class mated don’t know such basics! They don’t know how binary code works, what is motherboard, how to login to school domain on Windows.
But on the flip side, they look at me like at the God 😏7 -

Hello, my name is ***** and I already had a few Old Fashions🥃
I've been chasing a big career and success since i was about 12.. the first 8 years of my career I did the same.
for the last two years i decided to slow down, I'm still keeping up with stuff and do a good job but I took a break from wanting to being the next Wozniak.
Im much happier and more relaxes now but I'm at a point where i really wanna do, be and achieve more..
My #1 goal in life is to build a family, having a wife and a few kids. (first gotta be able to talk to women though:/)
i have a very strong desire to have an impact on the world and society to build a life in which at least my (non existing) family could be happy and without worries. but i've no fucking clue how to achieve that. how to have an impact. i don't see a way as a software engineer anymore..
i feel lonely and lost without any fucking perspectives..
i feel like i was better off when i was chasing the big money..
i know dev rant is not the place to do this but i can't talk to my family and i wanted to share my emotions. been alone for 3 months now and it's also about my dev career, that's how i justify to post this to our community here😅4 -
How many of you feel you learn something on the job?
As for myself, I learn much more from books than sitting day in, day out at work, doing more or less of the same things.
To me, this whole trial-and-error way of 'learning' is not really learning. I don't subscribe to this dogma. I don't 'learn' by messing up and fixing something. I need a full specification of why something works, when and how. I'm not satisfied by just being a code plumber.
This, next to the fact that most jobs in small startups don't provide a budget for you to expand your knowledge.5 -
For different reasons, this outbreak of coronavirus lead me to learn how to use git efficiently (never had to before, as I work mostly alone). In two days I learned to fork, branch, pull, push, ... I feel like I really accomplished something for myself.
Oh and I also started to collaborate to a shiny app in R. Any way is good to keep my mind off the fact of being in lockdown in a foreign country.
Stay positive people! :) -
Okay so this is my first desk job. I'm experiencing some personal issues and wondering if they are normal, what you do to combat them, etc.
First of all, some days, I literally almost fall asleep on the job. Caffeine doesn't work much. I know it's just my sleep schedule but what should I do in this situation? What if I actually do fall asleep?
Secondly, I'm finding that my productivity only exists in bursts. I'll do three hours of work in 10 minutes, and then 10 minutes of work in three hours. I can't just catch a stride. How do I become more consistently productive? Should I be more consistent?
My legs hurt. Sitting all day is not for me. I guess this is more situation to situation, and I do walk almost 6k steps a day on my breaks, but it really doesn't feel great most of the day.9 -

So, I don't have any idea about copyright law. I've heard, that React is bad, as it has a `if you sue or in any way "compete" against us, we revoke your licence` clause.
So how bad is this? Is this really a thing, unless you either sue FB, or they try to buy you (which are both not very probable for small companies). Could someone who knows their shit give me a tl;dr summary (or feel free to debate)
What I've found so far: https://github.com/facebook/react/... which seams to be kind of ok.

Guys should I quit my CURRENT job ? I feel like I should find another job because of the following reasons
a. I suck. I know I can't complete the task given. The task given is to build a trading bot. I can't complete it because of my incompetent trading knowledge and i find it difficult to understand trading logic and I tried my level best even paying someone to private tutor me but the tuition fees are too high and I still don't understand. Btw I am from a web development background
b. It has been 3 months in this company. I feel like I am not doing anything. I feel like a loser who has been eating free salary without contributing anything. Sure I have managed to write few strategies on pinescript.
c. I dread everyday to even do anything. I use to feel accomplished in my previous job. Nowadays I cant hope to feel like a complete idiot.
d. I don't have the motivation or fire that I use to have when I was a web developer. I just hate looking at code nowadays.
e. Algo Trading is too difficult for me. I don't feel like I am progressing anywhere.
f. Nobody in my company knows how to build a bot or have any knowledge on this.
g. Python dataframes , plots, charts bores me to death and I am really no interested to even look at it.
I am just so frustrated as I am typing this and I am becoming tired and exhausted to go to work everyday because everyday I am so clueless on what to do. You need at least some idea where to go to but I don't. Everyday I feel like a complete clueless moron.9 -
I got a call from a recruiter yesterday. The employer wants to get me in for an interview. It's for a fairly big company and I'm beginning to feel really nervous. I hate the place I'm at and I need this job. Not just for money but also to retain my sanity.
The interview is with a development manager, I wonder what kind of questions he/she will ask. Ahhhh how do I prepare for the unknown? 😱10 -
I'm done fighting with my professor over my thesis project. They want me to go slower in building my project and we only have 7 weeks to deployment. Well screw you how in the hell do you expect me to prototype, build, bug fix and deploy all this and go SLOWER. YOU AREN'T AIMING TO BE A CAREER DEVELOPER ARE YOU?
I feel really sick this morning. Between the anxiety of graduating soon and my debt...
I just want live for myself. Not the sake of a school or some corporate entity. When this is over I want to work overseas in Europe. Do something for myself for once.2 -
LinkedIn recruiter:
- messages me about a fantastic job opportunity
- waits exactly 3 days
- messages me asking about the cool company I work at and how I find the engineering department here
- again 3 days
- messages me saying that he has heard some amazing recent news (there were none) about the fast growing company I work at and asks how I feel about the changes caused by our headcount growth
- 3 more days go by
- today, I get a notification that this recruiter has given me random LinkedIn endorsements for some skills that I had put on my profile back in college and since then forgot about even the existence of the endorsements feature
My favorite part is that the job they had originally sent expects a few languages and other tech skills most of which I actually have listed on my profile, but naturally, he only endorsed me for skills not required for said job spec.
What kind of weird sorcery is this?2 -
Read up on how CSS Grid works. Now I feel like I've been living under a bridge these many months/years.
It's awesome how you learn so much during your tasks/projects.
I read the term CSS Grid a couple of days ago, and while starting a project for my client, I decided why not take a look into what a CSS Grid really is, and oh damn, I believe Grid is really going to make this project extra awesome.3 -
The interview I was so nervous about apparently went well. It’s a small ad company.
I was offered a month long “work trial” period.
Problem is I was caught off guard with discussing compensation & what I agreed to is less than half what the average dev makes in my state.
Like barely above min wage
I feel much less excited about this but this would be my first job in a loooong time.
I’m not sure how to feel but I think I have to at least try, but I feel taken advantage of already!
Is that bad? What would you guys do? How would you approach this before sending any signed commitments back?
Ugh!!!!!10 -
"What are all the meanings of static in C and C++?"

Should i call electrician to fix this bullshit?
Pls how much does this fix cost. I hope motherfucking not more than 20-30$ !!!37 -
So working on the cutting edge of 3d scanning (think project tango) i feel like my boss and his client are trying to sell a sham.
The technology is amazing but very limited. They are trying to sell magic. The PoC barrely works properly by their standards, and the one they are trying to sell to saw a fluke in behaviour that made it appear as if the PoC worked like how they are trying to sell it.
I hear them brooding over this plan to just sell that without any real plans to make this project work. There is no way they can make it work eithout compromises.
I do not want to be part of this ._.2 -
I need to get this out there because you guys and gals are honestly the only people I can vent this to.
I’m working on a program for fun that’ll transfer files over sockets. Nothing too special. But this project is just boring me. I’m not getting any motivation even when I’m getting started. Which didn’t happen last project.
I have a general idea how I’m going to do it but I just can’t sit down and do it because I start overthinking about everything. Like how am I going to do this or that. How am I going to handle feature a, feature b, etc. And I’m just getting a headache and I’m not writing code and I’m JUST FUCKING STARING LIKE AN IDIOT. I don’t even know why it’s not inspiring me because I’ve always wanted to program a file transferring application of some kind and I still do.
I keep doing a bunch of small patches when I work on it and they work and improve it but I am hard on myself because it’s not one big feature or I didn’t work on it for hours. I’m always so fucking hard on myself fuck.
I want to do so much other stuff but I just wanna tough it on through and finish but it’s so uninspired because I don’t even feel like what the final product will feel like others. Like any service that involves transferring files I feel like they don’t function like how I’m thinking they do like I’m trying to make this function.
I feel like everything I’m making is just subpar and not good and I’m trying and I’m trying to improve but I feel like I’m not getting anywhere. And I want to learn a lot of stuff I have shit planned but I can’t get to it because I have to go through uninspired bullshit hell.

I hate React. I keep reading that people have problem of grasping it, but that's not the case for me. I get it, I understand it, but I hate with passion HOW it's done knowing how nice it's done elsewhere. What really triggers me is how ugly it looks, both from architecture and code level. To me it really say a lot when even code shown in documentation looks ugly, and while reading it you ask ourself constantly "why it's done this way?". When I read React being called an "elegant" solution something explodes in me. Did you saw Svelte? Vue? Damn, even Alpine.js?
I just cannot how overengineered this API is. Even doing simplest things there produces so much junk code written only because this is what library requires. Why? I feel like working with it is a punishment.
And scalability and maintainability? I've never seen large-scale projects more messed up than those wrote with React. And yes, you can blame teams working on them for lack of skills, but it is the library which encourages or not good practices also, and I've never seen such bad situation with other libraries/frameworks.8 -

instead of just pooping without giving any attention to it or using phone while pooping, you can use your phone for guided meditation with apps like Trip, Calm, ...
While shitting I noticed small things like the water tap, I slowly rotated it; first the water came in drops(listen to it), then in a small stream, then a turbulent flow.
If your attention drifts away, gently observe that its a thought and let it pass.
focus on what is happening right now. Feel how your anus vibrates to fart, giving a tingling sensation.
focus on how the turd comes out of the anus, the way it expands your sphincter muscles and finally drops in the crapper.
Practice gratitude. I realised how lucky I'm to shit comfortably in solidarity, many people in the world don't even have such privilege.
I feel good that I've flush mechanism in my toilet and 24x7 water supply. The shitting time can be utilised in a very positive way like this.
Look at your shit and wonder this used to be food, and be grateful to your digestive system.19 -
Although im starting a job in 2 weeks, i feel depressed already. I know what awaits me and I'll know even more what is yet to come. It's going to be hell. If it was a huge amount of money like 5-6k i would be less depressed. It would solve lots of problems. But its nowhere close to that
Tomorrow morning i have to go and sign the nda and other contracts. I really dont want to. This is not what i had planned. I planned to finish my project by the end of this year asap. Now i have to speedrun and finish the whole project ASAP before i officially start this job
Although im starting a job, i feel like a failure even more than not having a job. How is this possible and why is that? Why do i feel so bad to start working a job?
Knowing already that ill sign a 3 month contract, and knowing that I'll earn exactly $3900 in the next 3 months, is fucking pathetic in this economy13 -
I am living my dream.
I have a nice fam, enough capital, a job I enjoy, I'm enjoying the life in this world every day now. And yesterday I caught myself in a moment that 10 years ago I thought only happens in movies. An engineer participating in a meeting with the client while riding on a motorcycle.
I mean, how cool is that! It may not seem like much now, because it was a necessity - I had to be at 2 places at once. But a 10 years younger me would wet his pants if he knew I would one day be doing that IRL.
How about you? How would a 10 years younger you feel about the _now_ you?4 -
Problems. We get them frequently, to me it feels like life is not about being happy and all, it's about how you handle your problems. Any kind of problem, be it work related, you personal life anything.
Developing the skill to deal with different kinds of problem is what makes your life better and better.
What world taught me till now, to run away from the discomfort, a lot people talk about how environment is bad, and you should not take shit from anyone. But few things tell us what's actually lack inside us. Maybe, on social media we don't boast a self awareness based thinking because is makes people uncomfortable to think about their own behaviour. Self awareness is becoming more and more important for me now. I am trying to keep my self love intact, it's hard though. But knowing your own shortcomings and taking actions to understand and do something about them makes me feel in more control. Makes me happy. :)
I'm writing this, because I just got a work problem and I snapped and closed my laptop very impatiently. Then in few seconds I realised, it's a kind of a problem that I should try to 'deal' with and not go into a loop of self hatred. Even though my heart ja racing fast, and all the hormones which are making me wanna feel sad, I feel aware and more in control that hey, you are feeling this because this problem has these consequences but let's try to solve it. :) -
This week I had an interview via Zoom and the HR asked me "How would you feel positive/comfortable as an "apprenticeship person"?".
I asked them to repeat the question because it sounded weird and I thought it was maybe just my mind imagining things.
They said the same thing to which I asked why they ask me such a question thinking that this might be a new HR trap.
She (HR) felt that I was suspecting something and explained this is not a trap, but just to improve the company.
I don't think that's the case lol.
If I were to demand material things, it would not be in the company's favor.
+ how the hell am I supposed to know before even having worked with them for let's say a week?
That was strange7 -
Well, I've been reading 'rants' in this community, and I'm amazed at how people discuss various softwares, languages, and sometimes even hardware!
I'd say I'm a noob. Can't even compare my 'coding knowledge' with what people know in this community, and I don't want to. I like that I'm now a part of this community. But I feel intimidated at times by the amount of things there are to learn! And I don't know how to start. I mean, we had a course on C for a semester, and I tried to build up on that myself. Other than that, I've been trying to learn web-dev, made a browser based game and tried to learn some back end. But I don't know exactly how to build up my proficiency with code, and solving problems, from here on out. So I would really appreciate if this golden community could help me out.(Not trying to flatter anyone. I don't express much, but all this is what I genuinely feel, and am grateful about.) I want to know how to go on about learning knew things in the realm of programming, and how I can apply it to solve actual problems. What language should I learn first? What will be valuable in this rapid-paced time? And some courses to help out?
I stumbled upon devRant one day out of nowhere, and I'm glad I did.8 -
Got a virus (was stupid enough to rely on Defender coz didn't want to compromise performance).
Hell I right-clicked > scan with defender and it gave it a clean chit.
Later got every click on any page leading to some porn website (that too fuckin clickbaits not the real ones -_-)
Installed Kaspersky on trial > virus removed.
BUT the fucker modified files.
Reinstalling Firefox disinfected it,
BUT I CANT REINSTALL EDGE.
Another full-OS reset.
I guess this is how women in their late 30s feel like..

Hate my fucking ‘Logic’ class. Teaching us if, or, and, etc statements and when something is true or false so far. Fair enough, part of logic. But fucking 6 classes on the same topic, isn’t helpful. Especially since it feels like the same shit I learnt myself when I was 13 and a junior in High School.
People are all surprised at it, even the Computer Science majors. This shouldn’t be a shock to you on how these statements work if you’ve coded for a few minutes in the University. You should’ve learnt it in your first programming class.
Ugh, just how I feel about this class. Have to take it to get my degree, otherwise I would’ve dropped it by now >.> Waste of time and money for me.12 -
So we have this team bonding and feedback session every monday, where everyone in the team needs to say what they appreciate of their team member and what they wish the team member would change... The whole thing takes about 2 hours.
Honestly, feel like a corporate BS, what feedback do you want? Just do your job and I am happy with it... Well I guess that's part of the corporate world, instead of just doing your job, it is about how big your "influence" is in the company and how many people like you4 -
Need to rant / maybe some advice.
Working remote is hard.
New company, remote on boarding. I feel like my coworkers are robots, and I'm being tossed into the deep end with minimal guidance.
The codebase is so unnecessarily complicated, its impossible to read. I've been trying to figure out how things work for a whole month, still not sure.
My mentor that is supposed to help onboard me is a robot, and answers questions in a somewhat acceptable manner, but it still feels like a lot of "figuring out" is still left for myself.
My other work partner that is also a newbie like myself is also a robot - doesn't talk or ask many questions whenever we have a sync up meeting.
The codebase is huge and feels quite overwhelming, I don't feel like I got a team "with my back", I don't enjoy work as much as I have before, I barely do any coding (mostly reading code and trying to understand how everything is working by setting breakpoints and debugging tests that take foreeeever to run), and some days I'm seriously considering cutting my losses and jumping ship just to save my sanity.
Am I paranoid? Am I just dumb? Should I just suck it up and be happy I have a job? Is this how Remote work is supposed to feel like? Why does it feel like my soul is dying?
Anyone in similar situations, or who can give some insight/advice/etc, I would highly appreciate it.
And this is supposed to be a good company too from the reviews. I don't know how it can be so crappy in reality. Did I make the wrong choice joining? Should I jump ship sooner rather than later? I've only been here about a month or so, and maybe its too soon? Halp!12 -

What is everyone's opinion on the way the gaming industry is going, I mean with everything going for the 4K and all the shit that goes on between Console and PC gaming (I'm a console gamer).
And, if you are a game developer, how has this push for 4K and everything must be 3D and photo realistic effected your work?12 -
I am looking for a job. Ok, alright. This woman calls me with her phone. After a bit of a coordination effort, she proceeds to give me the most pyramid scheme speech that could pyramid scheme. And she said I was fucking chosen because of my IT knowledge... Which I feel fucking insulted about.
This is not my first time brushing against pyramid schemes. Oriflame, if you've heard of it, is another one of the pyramid schemes that, confusingly enough, has product.
But my whole point is, they literally hunted me down because of my age, asked about my goddamn zodiac sign which is always a really good sign (/s), asked me shit like if I have children etc. Like, really. And left no space not to answer most of these.
The whole pyramid scheme industry is basically marketing itself to usually stay-at-home moms, promises an opportunity, etc and they are hard to weed out because they are making their way to normal job hunting websites. Which is how I ran into my first one.
I feel insulted that they'd do this stuff to me but here we are. At least I get the choice of blocking and maybe reporting.
But it really discourages me that that is how things are...5 -
All this small node modules in the npm repository that is a fork of another with a name that sounds almost like the other. It's a jungle. Then things are abandoned or changing name. How much i like coding nodejs based projects I really feel bad of the total mess with that repo. Freedom and a lot of projects are good. But the mess is like the flat of a young student that hasn't been cleaned in a year.

So I'm at Brazil Day in NY, took me $6 and 1.5hrs to get here but know what I'm here I feel spending $5 for street food snacks is too much... Like they're price gouging too far...
But in other contexts, I have no problem dropping $$$ for food... Pretty much daily...
I'm not sure how I should make sense of this or justify it. Maybe that's the difference between paying cash and swiping?3 -
Spent another half day learning ELK and how to programatically query and run aggregations against the data that's now collected.
So I can feed it into a testing framework for releases.
I sorta feel like I'm dragging everyone else into the light...
Like "you see what you've been missing all these years? This is how it's supposed to be these days..."
Data data data... Useful data.... This is what you can do when have structured and searchable logs rather then huge messy text files ...6 -
School made me a stickler for the Linux kernel coding conventions in regards to the C language. And even though I shouldn't feel bothered by reading other coding styles.....i still get annoyed.
I try not to get irked cuz I find it a small thing to get annoyed at.... but i still do.....bad.
And even then i dislike how there is not padding inside of funcion parametes
void
fu(int here, int there) {}
Should be
void
fu( int here, int there ) {}
That space man...its needed.
Man this is such a small thing to be annoyed at..3 -
I don't feel ready to search for jobs. I don't feel that coding is for me.
There is this guy that wanted to study physics and changed to System Information. He is more logical and rational than me. I'm too "emotional" to code, I get stressed easily when something isn't working.
I'm doing this because I wanted to challenge and prove myself that I could be more. I could have been a teacher, but I thought that it wasn't enough for me and I wanted to go further.
Every day I'm outside of my comfort zone and I don't know where this path will lead me and I'm scared and at the same time, I'm hoping for a happy end.
Maybe my brain is not made for coding, maybe it is more on the database side. But I'm sure of one thing: this year I'll give my best and everything at my current internship to get better at coding with Android Studio, Windows Form, Angular and React. My results will determine if I''m a good fit for coding.
Remember one thing: not everyone can easily learn how to code, but you will never know if you don't try it. Go out of your comfort zone in your life and you will meet a whole new world.2 -
A client I've been working with was supposed to pay me for $710, a pay for my two-month work for two of his projects.
He called me today saying that he could only pay $179 and that I need to wait for my unpaid salary. This guy is a friend of mine and he lowkey gives me access to his Netflix account, so I don't really know how to feel.
Do I get mad? Do I laugh it off?
Any same experience here?9 -
Our team lead was promoted to manager a few months back. Our VP/Director was fired a few months later. Our manager got our team a call today; the business is making a ton of money due to the Coronavirus fears. The company hasn't mandated any work-from-home policies yet. We're in a big city (Chicago/Downtown) so it feels irresponsible.
Our manager has complained about how he has no manager to ask questions; how every person is MIA (now he should know how we feel about him; but I don't think he realizes how absent he is).

Worst week ever.
Servers are on fire. Respoinse times out of control
Some SIMPLE SQL queries (literaly select * from whatever where Id = id) timouts at 30 seconds.
No idea what's goining on (And I have full logs of all api calls and all DB queries). No way to find how to corelate this data.
Ok, I added 1000$/month on Azure and the problem is "masked", but not resolved.
I have dumps, I have logs I have everything, why the fuck I can't find the 1 or 2 APIs causing that ?!!!
Now I feel better.10 -
For the first time, after 4 years, i have installed tinder. I feel depressed for having to do vengeance. And i also feel depressed for not having to do it. I feel sad for being forced to find another girl. This is not how i imagined it to be
Right now its 1-0 for my blonde ex gf. I have to have a random hookup at least a 1 night stand to make this 1-1. This is what i did before but now after experiencing love for the first time, true love in the first 2 years with her, for the first time that somebody genuinely loved me other than my parents, is very hard for me to go back to random hookups
Hookups are meaningless to me now. But i am forced. I have been given a check mate
⚠️Why do i have to be forced to fuck another girl in order to prove my girlfriend that other girls still want me, so that my girlfriend will love and want me again as well?....⚠️
Please reread this paragraph above 3 more times. Let it sink in. That is saddening to me. The more she sees how no other girl wants me, the less interest she has in me....
Im literally sitting. Listening to sad depressing "music" which is more of nature and dark rain sounds. I also started working out aggressively. I couldnt eat for 5 days due to finding chats on my blonde ex gfs phone with the other guy...
Now 8 days later... I have lost 6 kg and counting. I am barely eating. I am using the screenshots of their chats as an overdosed injection of adrenaline every time pre workout and during workout
Today she didnt text me at all. I always start the conversation first. I have to move on and i am still in disbelief that i have to do it.
My birthday is next week and the last thing i need is to spend being depressed....
I feel lost
But i have a feeling all i need to do is get rich. All i need is to get my money up and that way find more easily a new better behaved normal gf.
God help me
Forgive me God for everything
Thank you God for everything
Guide me God on the right path, for i am lost
Please.

I am 2 months in this job and I already hate it.
I love programming and building stuff and also the business side of things, even some meetings are ok if done efficiently.
This time its the coworkers. Nobody goes with the management decision to migrate the app. People intentionally deny help or at best dont care. Nothing is going forward.
I am a Junior but I am not just a warm body in the room. Still they really try to make me feel like I have to kiss some boots because of it. I really fucking hate this „family“ they call themselves.
How do you do? And how do you deal with a place you hate?7 -
How about a Git for Databases?
Do your changes, delete things, create things, and then when you are sure push these changes to your server.
If you did something wrong like accidentally delete fucking everything, just revert and everything is like before again.
Also you can view history and blame people for doing something wrong.
Tell me what you think about this. Not clue how you could implement this tho... Also I have enough to do already so feel free to take this idea!10 -
Did I get old or did I just finish plucking all the low hanging fruit?
When I started on a programming journey about a decade ago everything feel exciting and I learn a lot of things per day (variable,loop,method,class,---etc)
Now a decade later I am more concern with the overall system design, algorithms usage (Big O Notation),how reliable the system it,and how the configurations are set up and how easy is it to change them.
I now notice that I don't really learn anything learn new.Everything feel the same.
Want redundancy? Use more server
Want faster performance? Make a parallel system.
Want program to run on low end device? Think about how memory and storage will be used in system.
Is this a stage everyone went through like puberty? or I am just having a mid life crisis?
PS : I haven't even reach 30 yet but I feel too old.4 -

This is not a happy rant...
Got a new well paying job. Moving up in life. But my wife is not in the same place... She had quite a few career struggles and just lost her current job... It wasn't even a job she went to school for, just whatever she could find...
Now she's getting quite depressed. Luckily she's not envious at me, but does keep saying how lucky she is to have me.
I really want to help her somehow, but this is really a thing I just don't know how... And it just looks like she's not handling it too well. Joking about suicide and crying about being useless... She also keeps saying that all she can do now is be a housewife. We did seek out help for her. But still... I really want to give her better support. I feel useless here.18 -
I feel fucking proud of myself.
I spent the better part of three days trying to figure out how to compile source code on Linux using ./configure and stuff and best place to put the compiled source after running make and it all works. It's such a small thing but seeing as I've been tarnished with Windows this is a great accomplishment to me.
Also because I wasted days figuring this out, jumping to multiple topics, progressing deeper and deeper into different topics to figure it out... abstraction would've been nice... -
This lack of real human contact is getting on my nerves. Most of the text messages, discussions, especially in PR or design roads to follow develop into pissing contests. Always proving how much one is right and the others are wrong. -
I get so pissed off with little details, e.g. useless, wrongly handled boolean return values. Cannot understand how they don't see it my way. Or how they can feel superior by offering platitudes like "One should never use singletons". As if following some stupid rules and patterns from a book made you a better programmer instead of looking closely what each problem really needs. Or how they don't measure properly/scientifically or can't interpret the numbers.
My blood pressure already rising just from writing about it. Maybe I need to get some time off. But at the same time I feel like, they are doing it all wrong or not the way it should be done, so it's hard to let go. To obsessed with all that shit...1 -

I feel like I never lived/live my age. I feel like I have wasted childhood (who the fuck wastes their childhood?!), teenage years, university years, most of my 20's. I need help.
I love software and hardware development but over a period of 4 years now i have lost motivation. I hardly finish anything i have started and if i finish, it's never rewarding.
I also feel like i live a very boring life. Staring at the screen all day and doing very little.
What do you guys do for fun? What activities or books do you read to keep yourselves busy or entertained?
I have been having this desire for someone to love but something makes me think that it's just a reaction to a soul that has lost purpose and only feels like loving someone will be a source of happiness. Luckily, nobody has been available for the mess i have been.
I really admire busy people. People who are passionately working on something they have chosen to do and still have fun.
I think talking to someone about how bad i feel about myself will help a little but what i really need is help on how to restore the motivation i had 4 years ago.
Can someone give me a fun project i can work on? Not for making money but something i will do, learn and feel happy about it.
I will also appreciate if someone can recommend a good book that will help me learn. Get me motivated and also hide me from this reality.
Thank you.1 -
I just returned from a 1 week vacation and my boss summonned me for a 1 on 1, and said he is not satisfied with my work, as I don't deliver "fast enough" according to him and do not show enough enthusiasm. I just nodded and didn't answer out of shock.
Background: It's my first dev job, and it's in a really fast paced startup. I have no degree, and I'm here for 3 months. I'm 23 years old, he is around 30.
I really don't know how should I feel about this. It's the first time someone tells me stuff like that and I'm kinda depressed. I know I sometimes work slower than my colleagues because I have less experience but I never thought it would come to this.
Any advice?2 -
I dont understand why we must use PHP to
understand OOP
Im a student software developer and this is the first time i will learn about Object Oriented programming but i dont know man im really confused why our prof makes us use PHP to understand the concept of OOP rather than to learn Python or Java which is ten times easier for an OOP based application
I can understand that PHP can be used for OOP but why just why... can someone please explain why this might be and how does it feel to use PHP for OOP purpouses9 -

Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now. -
Most frustrating? Anything involving IE, but that's a safe answer. No, my most frustrating experience (to this day) is getting tables to behave responsively on mobile screens. Not easy when the tables in questions contain dozens of columns with hundreds of rows and mostly rely on fixed widths to render the text the way the client wants. So if you have a client who doesn't understand how hyphenation and word break work, I know how you feel.3

I love devrant so much for how I feel it's the one social network in which I feel part of the community, and I hate it for letting me realize how alive all of the stereotypical behaviours the IT crowd is usually shunned for are amongst us.
Users and managers aren't stupid, processes in a company are usually there for a reason, and if your boss is really that much of a dimwit, then why the hell are you even there?
This has to be one of the most recession proof professions out there. Change jobs. Stop blaming everybody else for your shortcomings, damn it.
But, yeah, much love to all of you making us look good and being humble about it.10 -
Does anyone else feel bored of sleeping ?
Purposely closing my eyes and dozing off to sleep is something I cannot do... It's just boring.
I tire myself out until my weakness kicks in to give me a couple hours of sleep. This has been affecting my health, concentration and ultimately work and I don't know how to tackle this problem.
Trying to sleep is easier said than done, staring into a blank empty space is a huge anxiety trigger for me on top of being a less exciting thing to do.23 -
So Today I completed an android app I have been building for like 2 months then this asshole who does education looks at the app and says "This simple thing is what you have been working on for 2 months?".

I wanted to prank a colleague. And he ruined it by showing up to the site of prank way too early, despite him having had clear instructions as to "let me know" once he gets to the office.
Anyways, as I was going to lengths getting this damn skeleton yesterday, I was thinking how much more fun it would be if my highschool bestfriend was here instead of him, and what greater lengths I'd go just to prank her. Halloween specially would be prank every day for a week! 😆
Now, point to make, is that the mentioned bestfriend is well and alive, just wants to live her life her own way, and that doesn't include having a goofy friend such as me as close anymore (and I feel that's fair, however much I don't like it)
But that I am projecting my friendship with her on this new friend/colleague... creepy of me, I know, but like... also sad. Like I felt bad for myself for a second there. How many times in a lifetime do you get to feel bad for yourself?

The sheer amount of information to be gained in this field, and in my case specifically at my job, is mind boggling. Maybe it's just the week of fatigue talking here but I feel I'm way in over my head. Learning business, teamwork, development strategies, progress tracking, the code base itself, how different teams work together, how different sectors work together, overarching goals, individual goals, and then going home and having a social life, good nights rest, and somehow exercise in there?
It's certainly overwhelming. I know being new makes it seem worse than it likely is but I don't see how people even manage to amass so much knowledge in such a short amount of time. It's honestly so exhausting to keep track of everything and try not to make mistakes that it's nauseating. I'm still gonna try but good lord does it feel impossible. -
Currently we have to make a new REST API at work. I want to have a clear and functional API (with HAL JSON, that is given). But my colleagues don’t like this, because they don’t like the design (the look and feel) of the HAL JSON responses. They just want an easy API with a nice design, so they want to ignore half of the HAL JSON specification. But a REST API don’t has to be easy and don’t need a fancy design, REST APIs are not for humans but for computers! How can I explain this to them?3

Do you feel dazed by what front-end development is become? You should read this article, it worths your time https://hackernoon.com/how-it-feels...
I felt the need to share it and to talk about it1 -
I am fucking out of shape. I hate it. I also dislike gyms and exercising doing some repetitive boring set of things. I feel like exercise should be a functional thing. My mind has issues so I end up not exercising. I walk every day 2 to 3 times a day at work. So I am getting some exercise, but not enough. I also like to play games. I saw a reference to a "Skyrim workout". I thought, hey I should look into that. So I found a couple of workouts tied to game mechanics. I am going to start with the simpler one until I see how this will "work out"... If this is successful I think I will create a mod that people can customize their workouts. Less fatty gamers unite!
I have also changed my diet to mostly non carbs. I allow some carbs, but not most. I feel better in general. I just need to actually move more. Have found I don't really get hungry anymore, or not as much.
Anyway, here is the simpler workout I found:17 -
Was recruited to build a text-based course where I get a nice bonus if I finish the course early. Now I know how they are always able to save themselves from giving that out. There's so much fucking red tape for each literal sentence I write! I have MULTIPLE reviewers, commenting, editing, and "suggesting" EVERYTHING I write.
News flash: this course is derived from a different video-based course that has sold hundreds of copies on other platforms, so I must be doing something right.
Just let me write the whole course and we edit it in the end!!! This treadmill is going to triple or quadruple the time until publishing...
I feel like I'm trapped in the movie office space: "every day I have 5 different bosses come and tell me the same thing"
Won't be working with this platform again. -

This is probably a standard pattern/algorithm, but I feel pretty good about myself figuring this out.
I was doing a programming challenge and found myself with 2 lists of integer points (x,y). I needed to see where the points converged and identify those locations. Of course I started with a brute force approach and did nested loops to find these locations. This was taking WAY TOO LONG. These lists were 200K each. So checking with naive looping is 200K * 200K operations. Which is a lot.
Then I thought, well I am checking equality, so I will create a third map. The index to the map will be the point, and the data will be an integer. I then go through each list once incrementing the integer for each point that exists in each respective list. Any point with a value greater than 1 is a point convergence.
Like I said, this has got to be a standard thing, so can someone tell me what algorithm this is? I am not sure how to search for this.
I am fuzzy on complexity notation but I think the complexity started at n^2 and was reduced to n. Each list is cycled over once.4 -
Hey DevRant fam,
I hope everyone is doing very well and of course staying safe, I just would like to share an experience I've had with an interview and would like some input and of course how you may have dealt with the situation,
I recently interviewed with a company that does Analytics consulting and are looking for grads - My gut feeling went warm as I walked into the office, was asked a nice first question such as "How is your day " etc, then was asked questions along the lines of:
"You seem to have finished your degree awhile ago, how are you making your money?"
"How many interviews are you having atm? How successful in each interview are you?" etc..
As I left my body felt very negative about the whole process... also I was only asked approx. < 5 questions, it felt like i was interviewing my interviewer - didn't feel good.
how would you go about this situation? curious to hear your thoughts! I very much appreciate you guys taking the time to respond and read my post. thank you <3 - this was organised through a recruitment firm btw.8 -
I failed at university, spent too long there without ever graduating. I learned a lot through self-study, though. The only company I worked at was an arrangement with a friend whose company needed people, so I stepped in, but eventually I deserted the job after the company went out of money and I went two months straight working without getting paid. Now I feel apprehensive of putting that job experience in my resume because I didn't come out of it in good terms with the company. I have many unfinished projects but keep them private on GitHub because I feel like the code is too bad to show off. How do I even get a job, now? Should I just quit the industry altogether? Aaaaaaaaaaaaa
Right now I'm just self-studying some things I had wanted to do since college (namely computer graphics and trying to build a game engine) but never actually got to study formally because I kept failing at the prerequisite courses because I always kept distracting myself from my studies and just not putting enough effort. Anyway, I'm willing to listen to your advice and your judgment alike. I feel somewhat confident that I can actually do a good job, but I also don't feel confident enough to apply for jobs since I always feel like my skills are lacking. I know about impostor syndrome, but at the core of it is the matter: is this impostor's syndrome, or am I in fact *actually* consistently bad and incompetent? Rationally speaking I tend to feel like the latter, yet I know the only thing I can do is to try and be better. I guess.
Anyway, completely unstructured thing, just me venting off my frustration and desperation in a place where at least people will read it and possibly offer some advice. Thank you for reading this far.4 -
Today we all opened santa claus holiday gifts at the job. we were told to buy each other small gifts based on questionnaire that we filled. Some girl bought me and i bought her
I have never seen someone put in so much effort to buy so many, such detailed gifts for a person they have not even met, personalized to my questionnaire that i filled up...
She bought me a book. Candies. Letters. Socks. Drinks. Spongebob chocolate eggs. About 15 different (but not unique) items in total. She even wrote in the first page of the book how carefully she took the time to find a fun book to read and not choose a random book just to buy a book
And i bought her a figure of santa claus with cupcakes, as in santa claus brought her cupcakes (2 items total)
I feel so bad. I hate it so much when someone else puts in more effort for me than i give in return. I feel ashamed. I didnt take this seriously at all. I cant stop thinking about this. Its making me feel so bad. Im feeling beyond terrible. She said she was happy and grateful for what i bought but I know what i bought is nothing compared to what she bought
How do i live with this moving on forward17 -
I feel a bit like shit.
I started a new job about 2 months ago. Company is great, culture is amazing, project is interesting, processes are what i always dreamed.
This is after having learned the job from scratch at a startup that was all you can imagine. Tedious, hoping to be something that was not yet and so on....
So we are coming at the last week of a sprint. Its Tuesday and most stories are competed. We dont have a culture of jumping on others PR, its kind of like this is my PR kind of mentality. This is not established its more like an untold rule. But coming to the end i figured, especially if i knew exactly how to fix the PR that o should jump in a make it happen.
Person who owns those prs unassigned themselves from those and added me instead kind of like: “well take it if you want it....”
What are your rules regarding others prs and sprints?4 -
How do I handle working with my coworker?
He can be a bit half cocked with his pursuit of ideas. We're supposed to be working as a team on a project, and he'll often forget to cc me on emails. Or he'll go and talk to other people (make decisions) without discussing it with me.
Am I ovary acting? (heh) No, but seriously, I think it's benign behavior, butI feel uncomfortable by it. The last time I brought this up to him... He nearly cried. He was very hurt. What should I do? Be more aggressive?
I was a student leader throughoyt undergrad, but I feel like if we say something is a team project that we should be trying to work together. Feels like he doesn't know what that even means.4 -
The moment you realize you've spent years in a technology where the "IDE":
- isn't too good at finding references, unless the project is tiny
- is not capable to do any sort of refactoring (or at least you shouldn't trust it due to the point above)
- doesn't let you connect to any version control
- doesn't allow to CTRL+Z or any equivalent
- I won't even mention templates or dark theme
Guess the name. Feel free to tell me how utterly stupid this is so maybe I'll finally work on changing my path before it's too late.13 -
Tomorrow is my first day of slave job. I feel depression higher and higher. I am extremely unhappy. I feel like im going to prison starting from tomorrow.... 9-5 jobs are definitely not for me. I had never enjoyed this bullshit. I can already sense depression so deep thats about to hit me. Dont know how long this job will last, but not more than 3 months hopefully. Probably wont make it even 3 months from how bad I'll perform. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh6
-
I gave my team 2 weeks notice last week. Now, every time something “stupid” happens, this is how I feel! I’ll be starting at my new job in a few weeks and couldn’t be more excited!

Remember when we were talking about studios turning movies into shit?
Well this is the trailer they put out for the Minecraft movie:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
The reception has been terrible. I saw what the down votes were and they were over 7 million at the time. It is ratioed hard.
Then someone used the same audio and made what I feel like it should have looked:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
The audio works very well with this animated version. Someone made this animated version of the trailer in a MONTH! Holy shit!
Now I see this version of what they thought it should be like and I am dying:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
I just don't see how movie studios can be this bad. The fans made something more compelling in less than a month. I don't see the official Minecraft movie to be anything other than a torrent if your bored movie. It is not worth paying money.3 -
Tl;dr I am incredibly ashamed of my code at work.
I recently started working as a junior dev. I know many aspects of the stack I use, and I feel pretty comfortable when solving simple and specific problems.
But this is the first complete project I make, and I received no peer review until now. And my code sucks.
I tried my best to deliver a good and working code, but it became messy in too many places. Now it's too late to refactor.
Probably I just cannot see the right way of modeling specific situations, I don't feel I should blame the frameworks I'm using, but the point is that my code sucks. Or at least this is how I feel.
I'm going to leave this workplace soon (personal reasons, not related to this topic and/or the company), and I am kinda scared of the shit I'm about to leave to them. It's a very nice environment and they don't deserve this crap. Also I have some other good reasons to worry about this, but I cannot tell them.
My plan is to finish a couple or personal stuff I have to do and then spend as many hours I can on the project trying to finish it asap and make the code better (for now I've been working only 6hr/day).
I'm really thinking that I just suck at this.12 -
Got through 4 hours of merge conflicts before pushing to prod... I imagine this is how doctors feel during an operation... #ef

So had to send my pixel 2 xl back to google under warranty (4th fucking pixel I've had, now on my 5th) and just got it back after 3 weeks Alan's after using a Nokia 6.1... Holy fuck this phone is fucking huge!!
It's really weird now looking at it thinking on how I was able to put up with such a large device... I feel shaken to my core...
(Side note, as I'm typing this; I just realised I had some repo changes in termux I didn't commit and some debug logs for something I I was working on left on the Nokia but I just did a factory reset... fuck!)5 -

Even though I bought Prime for cord-cutting now whenever I need to buy something I have an urge to just buy from Amazon because I feel like I'm making back what I paid since shipping is now free 2-day for anything and 5% cash back...
And when you search for anything, there's usually 1 result that's like Amazon Choice and I see there's a price huge price cut...
But in the back of my mind, I stop and think does this make sense. Could be cheaper elsewhere? Are these deals really deals...
And that $120 was for video and I'm pretty sure Amazon is not losing money no matter how many orders I make our how much I "save"....
And why am I even trying to make back X by doing Y....
Yes totally random but thoughts, how do you think about this?7 -
Every time a new hype thing appeared, I was annoyed, like "kids these days and their tiktoks".
But at some point in time, this pattern of mine changed completely. I don't know how it happened, I don't know when it happened, but now I experience... acute nostalgia?
I miss Elon Musk and his twitter fanbase. I miss tiktok. I feel like a time traveller who went into their past, which is our present, to experience the cultural landmarks once again, because their time here is limited, and tomorrow they will have to go back.
I miss my autism problems and mental health uphill battle. I miss avengers and thanos. I miss metaverse.
Oh, and also... I miss you.4 -
Systems guy: this is how you slow down development projects. By tying design to a software development ticket.
Software guy: yeah but that's how you get reminded to do the work and tie a design requirement to the software development effort in the ticket.
Systems: why do I need to be reminded of my design work?
Me: because you're a year behind software and at this point you are just documenting what software has already done?
Sometimes I feel like the design guys don't understand that if they want to be involved in the process they need to NOT keep us waiting until right up against the deadline to give us the design. -

Learning iOS/Swift Programmer here.
I feel like Apple’s Developer Documentation is extremely hard to parse.
For one problem, it feels like there are 50 similar ways to deal with it; but only one way will actually work.
There also aren’t enough examples in the docs for me either, they just seem to go: “Here’s some code, figure out what it’s purpose is.” for most things.
I also feel stupid, because I’m using the Hacking with Swift tutorials to learn iOS Development(Great Tutorials Though); and I don’t know how to just build an app from scratch. (i.e. creating swift files and assets and compiling from the terminal.)
And using StackOverflow feels like cheating.
Lastly, I feel awful inside when other people see my work and think I’m a genius, when really, I feel like I barely know anything at all.
I’m I alone in this observation?
Or just dumb?6 -
!rant && type=="idea"
So lately I've been seeing a lot more posts about Devranters organising meetups, having some drinks together and loads of fun like that, absolutely amazing!
What I think is sad is that a day or two after those meetups, I see comments passing by saying "I wish I knew about this earlier" and "Oh man, would've loved to come if I knew!"
Perhaps it's an idea to make a subsection for (un)official devrant meetups/events on devrant so everyone who's interested in meeting fellow ranters can find these posts in one location, or maybe even a calendar with these meetups/events
How do you guys and galls feel about this?1 -
Android Tutorial #3: Welcome back! Today we're gonna learn how to use the List View.
Me: Wow, this is gonna be so useful for me! What a great tutorial!
The next day
Android Tutorial #4: Welcome back! Hey, remember List View from yesterday? Yeah, it's deprecated. Today we're gonna learn how to use the Recycler View.

What do people feel about remote work?
I got into my current work about 8 months and we all were remote working.
In 8 months, we met in person several times and worked together at one place for a week or two.
We have never overcome the feeling of a disconnect when we work remotely. There's less focus and less clarity on things to do.
Is this common? How do people be focused and productive in remote work?
Also how do people communicate effectively?2 -
So, I am fresh CS grad working at his first dev job at a pretty small startup (less than 20 people).
The Engineering team has 7 people and it's relatively flat.
At times, the senior engineers in my team, have 1:1's with the CEO and (what I feel is) some decisions are taken according to that meeting.
I feel kind of uncomfortable about this secrecy etc. even though I know that at least right now I am not experienced enough to be a "decision-maker".
Is this normal? Idk if this is how politics in the workplace happens.. looking for advice on what I should do regarding this..
Also, it doesn't help that I am literally the only Software Engineer (all other Engineers are Senior Software Engineers or CTO) so there is this generational gap which has limited my ability to "really connect" with anyone on the team.4 -
Being a native Android dev for most of my college days(yet to start a full time professional life), i often feel scared of my life choices.
Like, i chose to go into a field in which am totally on my own . Android is not a subject taught or supported by colleges, so a virtual shelter that every fresher gets, i.e that of a "he's just a college passout, he wouldn't know that" is not for me. I am supposed to be a self learner and a knowledgeable android dev by default.
Other than that , idk why i feel that am having a very specific skillset which would be harmful for me if am not the best at it.
I feel the same for entire Android dev. I mean, its nothing but a very specific hardware device with a small screen and a bunch of lmited sensors. Our tools and apps are limited to just manipulate them to do little fancy stuff offline. Other than that everything (and sometimes even this too) could be achieved by a website/webapp of a web dev.
A particular native android dev don't know how the ML/AI stuff works, don't know how backend stuff works don't know how the cloud stuff works, jeck we don't even know how those unity games work!
We are just some end product makers taking data from somewhere handled by someone and printing them in fancy gui.
(But we are good at ranting about stupid mobile hardware manufacturers, i tell u that)
So am not sure if being an Android dev is a going to be good for me in the future. I mean , a web dev always gets to interact at every level of products, but we can't.
I always feel my future will end up being limited to being good in Android, later shifting to IOS to being completely unemployed because everything is controlled by js and web dev tools and native programming is no longer a thing anymore :/4 -
So there is this guy with a startup, who wants me to work with him like a co-founder, putting innovations in to the startup. But I want to work like an intern, I will code, you will pay me money, if something breaks, I'm out.
Idk for how long, we can continue like this. Sometimes I feel I should leave, but then I think about the extra pocket money (I am a student). But he calls me like 10 times a day, talking for 15-30 minutes on phone, repeating the same things again and again, which really pisses me off as an introvert.
Should I leave the extra pocket money for some peace of mind?1 -
Ive been shit lately and my only escape has been programming and even so I still feel just bad.
Going through a C# book I have helps, but the last thing to get me to just feel good was this Python script I wrote to download a lot of images within a thread of a post and just seeing it go from nothing to working how I wanted is such rush and to watch it work and go through a LARGE thread of pictures that ARENT pornographic and download and save them is extremely satisfying.
That’s how I’ve been lately.3 -
Do any of you all have any recommendations on how to drill functional programming concepts into my brainhole? Any good resources or things that helped you learn? My brain is object oriented and I'm really struggling to "see the light" and become another FP hypebeast (which is what I feel most people become when they really learn this stuff)
Send help

At first i was told to go to college BY PEOPLE WITH NO COLLEGE because i wouldnt be able to find a job without degree
Like a sucker i fell for it and believed in those LIES so i sacrificed my life for school
Then later i found out PEOPLE WHO FINISHED COLLEGE told me i just need knowledge in order to be hired, and turns out degree is unimportant
Like a sucker i fell for it and believed in those LIES so i studied and worked on practical projects and gained knowledge
Now when I try to get hired, they admitted that i am able to complete complex projects and i know how to solve the problems even if i see them for the first time. But they rejected me because "im not sure why the car leaks oil".
I have to understand and know what the whole framework is doing under the hood, how everything works, how dependency injection works under the hood, SOLID principles under the hood, decorators how they work under the hood etc.
So now it turns out
- sacrificing life for school is not enough
- sacrificing life for degree is not enough
- sacrificing life for learning and gaining knowledge is not enough
- now the new trend is i have to know not only how to drive a car like a professional formula F1 driver, i also have to be a mechanic and know how to fix the car if it breaks.
MATRIX IS A BIG FAT BULLSHIT AND A LIE.
I feel like they're looking for a senior developer knowledge to pay him junior developer salary
WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT?
I sacrificed 10 days of my life for their bullshit to build this project from scratch as a technical interview. They never said congrats on all the parts that were built right, but only complained about the small portion of bugs i didnt have time to fix.
ALL OF THIS FOR A SALARY OF $1500/MONTH THAT I ASKED. THATS LESS THAN 20,000$ A YEAR. THEY EITHER GAVE ME AN OPTION TO WORK FOR WAY LESS (500-600$/month) OR CALL THEM BACK IN A FEW MONTHS.
I JUST FINISHED COLLEGE AND THEY EXPECT ME TO HAVE 20 YEARS OF SENIOR DEVELOPER EXPERIENCE.
WTF IS THIS SLAVERY BULLSHIT?
HAVING A 500$/MONTH AS ENGINEERING SALARY WITH A DEGREE IS BELITTLING OF THIS JOB.
NO I DONT LIVE IN INDIA I LIVE IN SERBIA. MY DOG IS SICK AND IT COSTS 100$ A DAY JUST FOR HIS TREATMENT. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE WITH A SLAVE SALARY IN THIS ECONOMIC CRISIS.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND2 -
I am a junior developer, two weeks ago I got a job for the first time in my life as a fullstack web developer, I have felt bad for the times that "I should have read the code better before coding", I think I am distracted and impatient. I make mistakes because I don't know how the system works in some parts and I write repeated or unnecessary code, my boss has corrected me, but I feel very stupid and I'm afraid of being fired. Is it normal to feel like this?2
-
I feel super discouraged. I just got a new job from being let go from my previous one, and I’m already thinking about quitting.
They really threw me into the weeds with a couple of complex tasks that require a lot of BE work and all I really do is FE. I’m still just trying to learn how the framework actually works. I think they expect me to become full stack. Now I find myself just starting at the computer screen most of the day because I have no fucking idea how to start working. The codebase and local environment is also fucked up super bad and barely runs on my machine.
Also, whenever I reach out these people they give the most minimal answers and have swollen egos. The frameworks they use have a really shitty community and bad documentation, so googling anything is really pointless. Working on this project, it has made me consider giving up development.
I am wondering if this is just a me thing though. Should I quit or stick with it for a bit?13 -
Met a girl in an app. She is hot 10/10. Sense of humor is 10/10. Empathy, integrity is 3/10. I’ve realized she is an addict of Marijuana. We’ve been talking for a month and she’s stood me up once. Then went traveling. Says she misses me. Then goes cold. And back and forth. This shit is a fucking headache. Just today she was stoned and telling me its not gonna work, I want kids and marriage and she can’t give me that. She sends me nudes and promises we will meet at the end of the month. This entire fucking thing is an emotional rollercoaster. I don’t feel the same at work. My productivity is suffering. My gut says to block her. And I fucking hate the thought of it but it’s right for my peace of mind and productivity. I just wonder how long I should fight since we have such fun conversations. I’ve lots all trust for her. She’s basically like a permanent fixture of my digital life it seems. And that’s depressing as hell. I’m giving her two weeks to show in my physical life otherwise I’ve set a date in my calendar where I must block. Addiction doesn’t even cut it, I feel addicted to this person. The jokes the laughter, the beauty. It’s torture.27

Anyone here that is pretty new to programming? So many times when I try to develop something, I feel I can't develop it because I don't know how to start or where to start (choose lanugage, framework and so on). And sometimes I encounter problems i'll sit with in days without success and then I just give up. Any experienced programmer that experienced this and overcome it. How do I do?7

ok this may look like a lazy ass beginner crying out for spoon feeding( which it kinda is), but i want some real industrial training in non documented Android coding.
For last 2 years i have been reading tons of Android articles and documentation on "how to use this library", "how to add this feature", "what this function of this class does", but not much about how to use it efficiently, like the way its used in industry.
When I interned with a startup, all they wanted from me was to push new design changes, fix layout bugs and work as fastly as i could. I had no time to understand their core code, which had so many things that i could have learned : those mvp/mvvm design/architecture patterns, dependency injections, kotlin , coroutines, state management designs, data bindings, eventbuses and handling, and VIPER,RIBS (I mean, not everything was particularly in their code, i picked up a few keywords from here n there)... a lot of stuff that is used by many apps for their codebase.
I can read up these stuff by myself, but i always end up feeling bored coz frankly, i got no big/valuable project to implement it upon and feel excited about it. I feel that open source projects from OSS companies could be my window, but their chat spaces are also mostly empty to discuss/get some guidance.
I want some specific training about these. Can you guys provide any online/offline course/company training/books in this subject, the best practices?1 -
Feeling over stressed, over worked and highly underpaid for all this effort. Worst of all I feel the passion leaving me for this work.
I graduated a boot camp last April and was blessed to contract part time at a startup learning how to work in the unity game engine. The team is two other guys, both super smart snd been working in this field for a long time. Since then I’ve added personal projects, finished a data structures and algorithms course and started the Leet code grind. I told this startup that I’d start looking for full time employee positions soon and they understand. They couldn’t offer me much money, or stock options, just experience they said. I feel like I’ve basically been grinding 24/7 since May. I’m going to run out of money soon and it’s all starting to take a toll on my body and mind. I never really sit on the couch or watch something anymore because I feel I should be doing something productive. This just makes me feel like everything I’m doing is meaningless and without impact. I feel like a wheel turning endlessly in sand and not moving forward. I even feel it zapping my passion for developing.
I just can’t help but feel that I’m burning out here. I have a new experimental feature to do for the startup and the amount of things to learn seems overwhelming. Especially with Leet code and interviews coming up. The two other devs on the team are extremely busy as this is a part time endeavor for everyone. I’m also in a relationship I started to feel detached from which causes it’s own stress. I love VR and AR which is why I chose this startup to learn Unity. Now I just feel like I’m dividing my efforts too much. I’m shitty at unity and also less good at web dev than I would have been if I focused on it purely after boot camp grad. On the plus side I will say I’m doing what I want. I just can’t help but feel like that damn tire in the sand turning without traction. And I feel the patience in me for self learning the basics and iteration over a complex project is waning. Without patience the learning is rushed and I don’t learn shit. I also make dumb mistake and “hope” I don’t run into errors. I feel I’m just trying to bang it out for the startup instead of use it learn cool shit. Anyways it feels good to rant. I can’t wait for a full time job, established work hours, and decent pay so I can live life and have off time.
I assume wherever I go I’ll always be in a spot where I need to figure how to get xyz done with minimal help or oversight. I just would like to be paid for it.8 -
OK... so just spent 3 hours doing the Code Sprint.... 1.9/7 correctly answered... these were "Easy".
Well this is how I feel now....
btw any tips how to do these, seems like you have to be a real God to complete all of these? within just a few days. Do you really need to be able to do this at a tech company? -
So I get an internship and I am obviously very happy about it.
First day at work and I get a brief idea of what my project is and it was related to machine learning with tensorflow which I have experience with.
Come tensorflow lite and NN api, my job is now to convert tensorflow model into tfLite and use NN api whichpart of NDK and I have 0 clue about it.
So I obviously go to documentation and read up about it. Goes to Google sample to checkout NNAPI example and I freak out looking at the no of files and the code cuz. Wtf are these JAVA CPP WRAPPER AND NATIVE CODE .HOW DO I EVEN START WRITING CODE FOR IT. WHERE DO I BEGIN. HOW DO I USE NDK WITH THIS. THERE ARE NO OTHER EXAMPLES ON THIS REEEEEEEE

Digital transformation is pain in the ass, my customer migrated project management from self hosted jira to atlassian cloud.
Results:
I am finally able to login to this new amazing jira that looks completely different but still nothing is optimized to laptop screen so looks crap as before.
My issues are now assigned to not existing user.
At least I remember how to use basic JQL and reassign issues to me.
I feel bad to other team members.
Great waste of time.7 -
So I'm on one project which was previously developed (I mean poorly developed) by another firm.
So this fucking guy who has done all the coding, I just fucking hate that guy because he has the shittiest logic and he doesn't know things should always be dynamic.
So he has written code(in PHP) where he has calculated the difference between DateTime and he is adding days, hours and minutes to another DateTime.
And it took me fucking 5hours to realize that he just forgot there is a thing called month which should be considered while doing this, I mean WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?
It was calculating like the difference between
2018-07-12 and 2018-09-18 are FUCKING 6 DAYS WTF!!!! SERIOUSLY? HOW COULD SOMEONE MISS THIS?WTF?!!!! FUCKING 5 HOURS FOR THIS?
Hush!! I think it is my bad that I thought it is DateTime issue and focused on that. I feel good now. Thanks.1 -
In the past 3 months I worked on a new frontend project at work using "new things" like vue.js and webpack including Babel polyfills on production for the first time. Now the project is almost done an I've been sent on to other tasks on our older projects to help follow the deadline at these projects.
It is a hard cut to switch my head back to the old legacy code after this long time only working with the new stuff and technologies. I feel much less productive at the moment, because I know how much time I could safe if I just could use the new technologies. But there is now way around this. Finally I now have to maintain Symfony 1.2 and jQuery again instead of building new awesome stuff in this exiting new technologies.1 -
I got an interview with the first company that has ever taken me seriously in 8 days (Oct 5). It's not the technical interview yet, but I'm still really fucking nervous. I really don't want to screw this up and i would love to finally be a professional...ish software/web developer; not to mention I kinda need a new job since being put on call at my current workplace (tourism's slow season). I got a lot of future plans hanging on the outcome of this at this point, and I can't shake the negative feeling that things aren't going to work out how I want them to, but at the same I feel confident enough to say within myself that I got this--what the hell is wrong eith me? 😥😥😥4

Triaging this project that's running on IIS makes me feel like my skillset is wasted on such banal garbage - while at the same time hoping nobody realizes what a mistake it was to put me on it because I have no idea how to troubleshoot or fix it.
I try not to be that guy who blames every issue on their tools but I can't believe some of these issues and respective fixes. Our QA was down for 2 months because I hadn't uninstalled a default module which prevents POST requests. -
im really tired of people who just happen to have been around for 10+ years being put into management roles despite not knowing how to manage, especially for software projects. really feel like im in the wrong field even though i love programming and am good at what i do. past few jobs have been similar in poor management, unclear roadmaps, etc., but this is the first time ive been directly insulted by someone above me. the pay isnt even that great here. i could just leave but why bother if every other company is pretty much the same3

Im beginning to think im stuck in an infinite loop of learning. This fucking bullshit never stops. I just continuously keep learning new shit and the more shit i learn the more i realize how much bullshit i still have to learn
It creates an illusion as if i know nothing
Just when i thought i see the end of the horizon and reach it only then i realize it just keeps on going into oblivion, as a sphere
Its like im trying to catch and find a corner of a sphere
There aint none
Its pointless
Is it also pointless to keep learning like this?
Perhaps this whole existence is pointless
Real talk now whats the point of existence bro
No matter what you do or dont do it doesnt matter
No matter if you're successful or not it doesnt matter
No matter if you learn all the bullshit in the world you're still gonna die and it wont matter
No matter how much i learn, it still and will always appear as if its not enough to these shitface recruiters and companies, to them it doesnt matter
Nothing matters. Everything is empty and meaningless. The entire life itself is. I dont value life. I dont care if i live or die. I feel no joy when i succeed and i feel no sadness when i fail
The tiny little bit of joy or success cannot outweight the years of sadness depression emptiness and failure the life has dumped onto me in spite of my hard work and continuous learning

This isn't a devrant post really, more like "adjacent to the societal void that all brings us here".
Anyway. This is for you.
"Fraud" or "Addiction"
Lies are like addiction.
We lie to ourselves.
We lie to each other.
Why can't we just be honest.
Why can't we not be honest?;
I don't need it.
I don't need it.
I WANT it.
But I don't want how it makes me feel.6 -
I saw a thing on the Workplace stack exchange site. This college kid with no in industry experience read the false narrative that "pitting your testers against your developers for bonus money encourages better productivity and bug free code". And thought it sounded good on paper. This worries me in many ways (especially since he wants to make a startup). The first being that he couldn't see how both sides would game the hell out of such a system, which I feel any worthwhile engineer types would easily figure out. The second is seeing money as the major motivating force behind software devs doing their jobs. I had a third but I am tired.
But seriously, who is still writing this bullshit (that article, not the kid's question) in 2016? -
I honestly have come a long way. But I still have these moments when I just lose confidence In myself, and while grieving it can be worse/more frequent.
I’m being taught some networking programming from this person I befriended and it’s going wonderfully! But I don’t know how much I’m taking in. I don’t know if I’ll be able to completely understand while I’m using what I’m learning, but I guess part of the learning is by using and doing. But what if I need to change it up for a different purpose but I don’t know how?
What if I’m not programming enough? When working on this project/learning the stuff from my new teacher friend to actually make some of the stuff I usually work on that for 30 mins to an hour and a half maybe even 2. Relax, do some college, play games, then later I’ll try to work through a few exercises of my C# WinForms book.
And before you say it I’m not balancing too much on my head. I’ve learned GUI’s before with Python I’m just reflecting that to C# and it’s easy and I’m always in a separate headspace for networking. But it all just doesn’t feel like enough?
It also doesn’t help that i don’t feel like I’m doing anything special that I can boost my confidence with. Usually in a project I won’t feel like I’m doing anything until a cool or special feature is made and I know that’s bad I hate it but I can’t avoid it and I want to feel good even when nothing completely out of this world is made that day.
And I’ve definitely come a long way I’m proud of myself but I just hate getting these feels. And It happens a bit when I’m learning because I’m afraid I’m not learning and I’m gonna keep copy pasting the same code snippets for different projects and I don’t want that I want to be able to fucking edit and change it or make a completely new one of whatever it is but my design but I guess that takes experience with it first.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk -
Any tips to stop getting pissed at your designer's design?
I was given a frontend task after so long (I'm a backend developer who has frontend experience) and the design is very good except architecture wise it's very difficult to build. It's not impossible, but it's very tricky to implement.
Our client has already approved the design, so I guess there's nothing I can do about it
But I am getting constantly annoyed when implementing the design. Whenever I look at the design, I feel like swearing all the time. I feel the designer is very inconsiderate. The design looks very good at big desktop screen, but some part looks dumb in responsive or tablet.
Does anyone ever feel the same? And maybe have tips for me to get by?
My managers have started telling me to stop saying "it's difficult" or "it's too hard". But it is difficult! And I am getting more annoyed when they tell me that.
Whenever I tell the designer that certain part is not gonna work (because we try to make things general so we can reuse), he will argue and somehow ended up saying "come on, just think how prideful you will be after implementing this".3 -
My thoughts on how progression goes from top to bottom:
I'm going to use the terms all wrong because I don't know correct terminology but this is just how I make sense of a good workflow in programming.
From top to bottom:
Hard coding
Variablizing (is this a word? I use it to myself)
Functionizing
Abstracting the function
Adding an interface to the abstracted function (another layer of abstraction saves so much effort later)
Testing each step if possible.
Then when I feel a bit of code is good, giving it some more time and more testing then finding bugs I didn't see before and improving things.
If I get tripped up and spend too much time on some issue, I'll just let it sit for a little bit and take a walk or think of something else. The problem is still being worked on subconsciously and when I return after a rest usually is more apparent.
Testing, testing, testing and more testing!1 -

Freelancers, how many hours would you charge your client per small projects?
Situation is that I am leaving country but will still work as a freelancer android dev in my company at hourly rate 27EUR/hour.
Now from experience I already feel that most specifications of tasks/ux-ui sketches will be not clear/vague. Also there is a question of overall app architecture, prevention from crashes, memory leaks and etc.
Basically they will give me some spec and I will have to evaluate how long it will take to do it. I never worked as a freelancer so I need some advice on how to deal with problems like this. If I guess that something might take 5 working days to be done (40h) should I charge for 60h and etc.?6 -
Okay, yes, modsecurity WAF is amazing and all, but... When one tries to implement its rules atop an existing app that wasn't developed in accordance to the rules... That hurts.
How tf am I supposed to parse and present a 6.5GB / 22M line audit log to the client?! Just parsing that monstrosity once takes *minutes*, let alone doing any sort of sorting / analysis!
I feel sick. This is exactly why I am a sysadmin and not a programmer, I don't like writing analysis stuff, or programs more complex than a few hundred lines of bash... :|5 -
The longer I go at this job, the more I feel unqualified to be doing it!
My boss is giving all these really fascinating ideas and things to get done... but he's not really describing it well on how to do it... just to do it. My creativity is being tested...2 -
I feel the need for a personal AI is real. I mean at this stage of my life I feel replacing humans around/close to me with a strong AI.
The idea is kinda creation of a strong AI but control its learning ability limited to one user.
Pros:
You have someone who understands you completely.
Knows what/how to talk no matter How's your mood.
Could be used to calm down the user even in critical situations.
Besides, if something doesn't workout just fucking tweak the code its yours no matter what the fuck you do with it.
Do I make sense??3 -
It's now a few months that I'm doing my first internship.
And I feel pretty bad.
The company is great, but the software I'm working on is horrible, bad coded and a nightmare to maintain. I think it's a common situation: fixing a bug opens other twenty bugs.
Also, the boss doesn't want to spend time to rewrite any part of it (it's not a huge thing, it would require at most three weeks).
I feel like I'm not learning almost anything and I'm not practicing anything about what I studied.
Also, when I go back home I don't have any will to code, even just to practice.
How should I feel about this? Is this a normal situation and I'm just somehow spoiled?8 -
Currently learning go and I’m really enjoying it. It’s been a while since I learnt a new programming language and the experience is different to what I remember. I’m reading an o reilly book and when about how they implemented a common feature of programming I’m like oh no they didn’t. I think this is what normal feel when they read celebrity gossip. Hash tag goto.2
-
I feel very frustrated about this situation. I'm studying so I haven't many time to work but I worked last two years and now I feel as a bird with clipped wings. I need a side project, something mine, to work on, to put myself in. I don't need to get money from it but the revenue it's only a confirmation about the success provided by hard work and dedication. I can't fill this emptiness with the study. I feel I just need to work on something I believe, see it grows up and came alive. Every project I start and every line of code I write seems meaningless. This situation is a strange existential drama and hurts me. It's like I forgot how to be satisfied programming. I live in this recurrent melancholy and I don't feel realized.
Sorry for the sad rant but I need some suggestions from someone who can understand me.1 -
So the more I scroll here the more I feel at home. I think this is the first place that I've ever been able to go that is in a social media format that I actually feel welcomed. It's like if I tell a joke people will get it. if I ask a question I can assume someone has come up with the same problem and will know how to help. or if they don't they've seen something on stackOverflow for me :p it's a good feeling to have found this website and the small comunity it presents.6

Can't figure out how in the hell to use nunjuck templates (or any for that matter) in metalsmith.
I feel like this is a general problem with oh so minimalistic modern projects. They look kinda cool but fail to do their main job correctly and in a flexible manner. This sort of flexible markup transformation just isn't possible to offload entirely to third party plugins and expect them to come up with some sort of compatibility themselves1 -
That time when you are taking about personal projects with other developers and their past frustrations come into the project discussion all of the sudden. Like, I just wanted to communicate about this great idea I got with other developers, not about how it cannot be done, or how someone else thinks I cannot get it done. I can stand this happening the first 1000 times, but not the next 10000 times.
I feel that this happens to other people as well, but there is just no talk about it anywhere.3 -
As a techie how loves the climate, I feel like I am living two life's. On one hand, I want to protect my earth, but than I make a app, and Evan though I buy offsets, what about all of the users. Why was I born this way, and can the natural and the man-made coexist? That is the question I must ask myself all day. I am looking to drone powered climate research in a effort to prove to my self they benefit each other, but I just can't. I fucking hate my life rn2

I like docker. I think the technology is cool and I have a few ideas on how I can use it. But I sometimes think I'm too stupid to use it.
I'm currently trying to convert parts of my dev environment to use containers. But following tutorials on it confuses me and I get lost with it really quickly and get discouraged for a few days until I give it another try and fail again
Like fuck I already know I'm mediocre but this makes me feel like i should go into a manual labor field instead of software development6 -
I have a good friend who wants to learn the basics of web development so she can leave her job. We used hang out frequently before the pandemic, so this would be a way for us to talk more. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how I can really help, since I don’t think I’m a good teacher.
My current plan is to send her through the free portions of Codecademy, and then find one-hour code challenges where we can code together via video chat, and then I can show her how I’d do certain parts differently when she’s done.
I feel like this is an OK foundation, but it doesn’t get into much of the other things web developers need, like CMS training and other stuff that just pops up as you work. Do you have any suggestions for 1) how to flesh out this training, 2) how to keep this fun, and not shift the dynamic of our friendship, and 3) how to eventually prove to a future employer that this training is actually useful?
Big ask, so big thanks to those with suggestions!5 -
I love automating things and tomorrow I will finish automating yet another repetitive work freeing not only IT stuff but some admins and moderators too. It feels satisfying but at the same time w/ each next automation I am going closer to the moment where I'll no longer be needed...
but then again I have to hop before that moment...just need to sacrifice some of my free time and start poking the market again...
some time soon...
and since this is in the question section, how do u feel about the automation and all5 -

Sometimes, I feel my school is a prison.
I'm sitting there, 8-10 hours per day, learnin' things I already know, and all I can do is sitting quiet to `don't disturb during the lesson`. I can't even use my laptop.
But, school also is nice in some ways, my principal allowed me to run a Hacktoberfest event in my school, make kinda radio in our school and make an app for our SmartTV (yep, we have a TV in school) to show weather, changes in lesson plans etc.
But still, I really feel this is the prison. One more year, and I'll finish this shit and go...to another school because `you need to graduate to do anything in your life`. Btw, do ya know any good ways how to become CTO or COO one day? Just asking. Greetings, I hate my school, have a nice day.10 -
"hey come try this good chat program called demonsaw"
5 days later:
developer: "i have no idea why it's so unstable for you only, at this point i'd suggest trying a different distro"
me: *tries a bunch of distros* "yeah all of them are just as fucked"
we went through "well is it DS' config? Is it your kernel? systemd? debian misconfig? libs? hardware? network? other shit running? ulimit settings? does Windows do this too? How about OSX?"
i feel so bad but we have no idea what is happening6 -
if you're having funner you're winning, son 😏
browsed through somewhere people were confessing things about their life. the community there is about something else so it's an interesting peek to who is there and how they are as people outside that area. man some depressing shit, or plain vile shit, evil shit
people have hope for the best for themselves and it doesn't work so they go crazy sometimes
some in there thought if they stayed there and toughed it out and were "successful" they would feel better. they didn't. I see that so much in the comments. people thinking if only they were successful they would feel better, but their problems have nothing to do with their level of success. it's strange humans do this
somehow every time I see depression I get happy
life will roll you, but are you having fun, son?
the more pain you see, the more you understand
so let's make talking about pain illegal
earlier I found out the first time my roommate realized if you pushed your body you eventually can't feel how tough it is to move it was when he was in his mid 20s on a college field trip... really wtf?
I walked a few miles to a far away grocery store to buy potatoes and hauled a couple bags home today. last time I did this I felt great after, which is what spurred the earlier conversation cuz I was telling him I was gonna go do it again.
well when I got back... he was doing dishes and literally crying... and he doesn't do dishes... because it's too physically tough for him to do his own dishes... so I guess knowing I was gonna do this walk with several kgs of potatoes he decided to try it out...
I told him the difference is maybe cuz since ever I could remember, my mom had taken me on errands with her like pre me being 3 years old, and we'd walk like 6-8 hours so I had learned real quick if you just power through physically you eventually feel nothing and can do it all day long
how could a dude not know that until he's in his 20s lol
so much of life is just like this though. it's funny. nothing real is spoken, nobody does anything, nothing ever happens. there's even war tourism people complaining current wars are too boring
but are you having fun, son?7 -
I have been working on a really interesting project for the last 6 months, now they put it on hold because another department wants something else done.
Now I have to go back and work with shitty tech and horrible legacy code.
They said is only for a month or so, but I can feel that it will be more, way more.
I feel like it is bothering me more than it should, probably because the other project was mine since day one and was way more enjoyable to work with.
Part of me wants to quit because of this, part of me tells me that I need to wait and I will get the other project back.
What would you do? How can I shut up my internal quitter voice? -
I am considering which CS elective to register for this coming semester, and I am not happy with many of the choices. Basically, I can choose between Android programming, a web programming class in the grad school, and maybe Linear Algebra for CS majors class. I am trying to figure out what is worthwhile to take in college, and what I can learn on my own. Advisor thinks I should take a web class, because it's important to know, but I am not too into web and I feel like I can just learn that on my own. I would rather take a class that will help me understand how things work, rather than just how to use a specific technology. What do you guys think?3

Beginner here.
Question: What is the most common way to customize a WordPress site to a specific design?
Guys I've been learning html and css and have just started Javascript. But I'm wanting to create some WordPress sites for fun and so that I also have some stuff in my portfolio.
I'll be creating a portfolio site for af friend who's is a cinematographer.
I don't want to just use a theme but I'd rather create a fully customized website in conjunction with a set design, as I feel like this is what I need to know if I'm going to be getting paid for this in the future.
How does one go about doing this? I've seen many videos but they all seem a bit confusing. Maybe there's a video series that you could point me to.
I'm feeling extremely fucken lost.5 -
What would you do if you had a safe way to slack whole day in job?
I am working in a giant company, it is easy to camouflage here. I am doing whenever a job is given but those tasks are not developing me. So I execute those tasks slowly. Sometjmes, a good quality tasks are given , I execute them really fine but those are scarce.
I used to study a lot of things during the day, like cpp, python, IoT but i feel like burnt out, just waiting for the end of the day. How can I break out of this situation. I know, for a better job, I must be a better sw engineer but I am wasting my free time(during my work hours) recently and my feeling of guilt is increasing.
How do you pick up yourselves in such mkments?16 -
I've been doing pretty well since lockdown (March) and making some projects to spent my time and practicing problems on hackerrank, leetcode, etc.
But now I don't feel like it anymore, another day passes by where I decide to solve or make something but still can't somehow.
my GitHub's contribution shows no activity since 4 weeks, how do you guys keep yourself motivated every day?
coz this lockdown is soo draining. ugh 🤦🏻♂️ -
I'm in need of advice. I reckon this is no stack overflow but that's probably for the best as I wouldn't feel as comfortable posting there as I am doing it here. So, back to the question: I'm currently working with legacy code, written in .NET 2.0. This code is responsible for calling upon PEC services in order to finally create personal smart cards. I was tasked with the job of creating a repository system that would allow the program to call on the old legacy services or the new ones without any distinction. We are talking about SOAP services in both cases. The issues is: the new service definition is comprised of soap policies. This wouldn't be a problem per se, with more modern version of the framework, but with .NET 2.0? Yes, it is. It doesn't support policies and signing the body with a certificate right out of the box. How can I manage this? I feel like the only way would be letting the proxy class do its thing up until the very last moment: intercept the SOAP request before its sent and modify it according to the specifications. But I reckon this is very bad practice. Is there any other way out of this?
Thanks for anyone that would like to help. 🙂6 -

we all know how much we love opensource. I've finally made one of my projects public on Github. Basically, it was easy to answer questions on SO by making my project public as it became easy to refer. I just wanted suggestions from you guys regarding how to make my project reach interested people? I thought this is a goof platform but obviously, it is meant to rant. Anyways, here's the link to my project : https://github.com/caffeinator13/...
Please give suggestions to make it better and get some contributions. I just want to feel comfortable in the opensource enviroment. Thanks guys! :)
PS: I'd like to share a pic of my stressball but i'm afraid, it is in a real bad shape as my folks used it to play cricket in the room. :/9 -
How much of mentoring should I expect as a junior dev? 4 weeks in this job. I get assigned a ticket, tryhard for 3-4 days on it only for my implementation to be replaced by a mid/senior with another broken solution with new bugs which I dont even know how to debug. They are not even in the office, I have to call them and mentoring that I get is max 30min a week. Is that normal? I expected at least 30min a day mentoring. I feel that I cant grow here as fast as I would want to. If I wanted to waste my time on digging through dozens of articles to learn what senior could tell me in 10 minutes, I wouldnt have accepted this job.9
-
Sooooo how much should I expect to get accomplished as a new junior developer? I feel like I'm making progress but basically everything is a struggle and I do it wrong to learn. Is this normal? I understand a lot but also the complexity of the projects im working on (in comparison to my skill level) means I'm basically always wrong and in need of guidance.
Thoughts? -
How many days an hour do you real professionals actually spending writing code... Right now between work as a junior front end dev, class and an applied project for school my brain is mush by the middle of the week and I spend my weekends trying to avoid opening my laptop, I hope I'm just overloaded right now and that I don't feel like this when I graduate.
Im getting a little worried though.2 -
Whenever I'm trying to get something done urgently suddenly something wrong happens. And then a chain of 'something wrong' starts. It doesn't matter how many different ways I try, there's always something wrong waiting for me on the way.
And when I try to fix 'something wrong', something else wrong happens.
I feel like this whole universe, each and every atom in this galaxy is trying to fuck me up.3 -
I’ve been at this issue at work for four days now and no progress and I feel really bad because we have important stories to pick up and I feel I’m wasting my capacity like this because I haven’t fixed it. Basically, only in our QA environment (one before production) our services is not acknowledging duplicate events posted by Kafka, thus keeps reprocessing them. I’ve spent so long trying to diagnose the code, which is the same in all envs currently, seeing how this suddenly occurred, restarted things, went through complications of using different tools, asked for help from others a lot but IVE gotten NOWHERE. Idr wanna say to my team that I should prioritise other things because we have deadlines but I feel this issue is important to fix but I just can’t figure out how. Now I’m worried this whole sprint will go without me doing anything and then fingers pointed at me later6

How can people stand this bitten apple? With this mojave update I now feel in the most unfriendly desert for developers.
Not only did your update render all my VM's unusable, but the new AppStore seems a joke. This new icon there if a piece is downloading or installing or whatever. I cannot tell what it should tell me. That an alien took a crap on my display? There's no percentage, nothing indicating what's actually happening. Is this your understanding of user experience through obscurity? - shunning the user from any useful information, hiding everything behind some nice looking vapourware?4 -
What is your opinion about courses?
I got into the world of development from the world of Sysadmining and security with 10 month long Java course and now doing web courses in my free time.
I feel this really helped me, as before I tried to learn completely by myself but failed. Now I feel much more confident learning by myself(albeit I still feel Noobish as fuck)
How did you learn? Did you take courses? Completely by yourself? Through work?4 -
So im through my trial period at my new job. I’m a bit surprised by how positive everyone is about me and my work so far. Especially since i feel i haven’t really contributed that much yet. I hope they’ll stay this positive but wouldnt be surprised if it isnt that case anymore after 12 months.
I always hate how colleages talk behind each others backs. There is someone leaving, supposedly because of travel distance. And one of the first things i heard was something along the lines that they are surprised it was still his own choice to leave.1 -
Landed a part time support/maintenance job for an android app. Its only 10 hours a week and I signed it, we agreed that jira tasks will be estimated in hours.
Now all of a sudden they want me to install some time tracking app called Toggle. They expect me to work on this part time after my fullltime work and also to clock every minute worked for this part time gig. Even if I go to take a piss apparently they expect me to stop the clock and I gues the app tracks wether screen/mouse is active? Like having a sprint and a task assigned with hours for that sprint is not fucking enough. No I have to track time now. Seems fucking disrespectful.
Not sure how to actually handle this because never been in such situation. I guess I will try to work with it for a sprint or two and see how it goes. Im not gonna be squeezed out like a lemon thats for sure. Gonna "track" extra time if I feel like it, fuck it. Anyone had experience how to deal with this?6 -
Right now I have all these ideas in my head that I want to do after my exams are over, but I feel overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I came up with, from finally starting to learn how to create and develop my own website to video editing for a small documentary that I want to do on my city just to train these skills.
If that is not enough, summer is here and I want to do lots of stuff with friends and my gf.
Any ideas how I can manage all of this?4 -
Just after feature launch, major bug on production and now I am getting yelled at by my lead as the issue happens to be with the PR i was responsible for reviewing yesterday. Somehow a logic error got past my review. But considering how large the project is it wasn't possible for me to test out every possible scenario myself. They should have had QA handle that. Also, that was my first code review. I can't understand why my boss has such unrealistic expectations. Bugs are expected at this stage. I feel like he just puts too much pressure on me for no other ther reason other than to just trigger my imposter syndrome. That way, I feel like a bad developer even though I am working my ass off. And he gets to avoid giving me a raise. Cant believe I rejected multiple offers to stay at this company. I don't even know why am I still working for this company anymore.4

How I feel about people in a meeting
Listening to someone others participating in some meeting (on speaker) (I'm not a part of):
checking configurations, talking about config hierarchies, addressing network stack limitations, etc -- all smart-sounding things. They must be very wise and experienced. It's got to be something very serious they're working on
Participating in a meeting myself:
wtf is he talking about, does he even know what JVM is? No no, this configuration does not make ANY sense. No, Mr manager, this is not how it works. Come on guys, you all running like a headless chicken - USE COMMON SENSE!!
I wonder if anyone else noticed that... I've been noticing this since the very beginning of my IT career.1 -
I don't know how to motivate myself to finish up this android app by the end of this month. My head is paining and I feel like sleeping only. I don't want to go to work.1

Not sure how to ask this. I really enjoy Network side of IT. Maybe even throw in a little Cyber Security as well. I feel like I'm trying to every too fast. I got no certifications yet. This is stressful 😫1

So this is a long, time sickness i have with the way we are brought up and being counseled in mental ilness. I feel like because i have bipolar disorder, and combat PTSD people are unaware of how debilitating it is to live like this, they just hear the symptoms and have no idea what its like to live with it. So like my wife and parents they are so ignorant to it that its insulting.. Im not toootin my own horn, but from 21-32 i have dont nothing but kill myself in every way i can. or jump headfiurst into addictions just to stop the dark times. I married a women thats become the worst person who has ever crossed my path. I need a helping hand sometimes to keep it together from people that shouldnt ever feel bothered but being honest with them is dissapointing..1

I joined a startup a few months back, it has four developers apart from me and after I joined and started interacting with them, I could feel that they weren't happy working there, after a couple of months, they became vocal about their dislike, when we were talking about work. I too started experiencing that. Two of them are going to leave next month.
I feel like its starting to rub off on me, I don't have that enthusiasm I used to have, I dread going to the office and overall everything related to the office started to seem negative to me. I feel like I want to get out of this place ASAP.
yeah, most of the things they say are true and I'm not so sure about the rest. Is this how I truly feel?1 -
I'll try to make this short:D
I'm a CS student atm. at 3 sem.
And I just wanted to ask you guys, how did you improve back when you started developing?
The assignments we get at school never really challenge me, so I've spent a lot of time doing "programming ideas"(from sub reddits and ideabag2) on the side.
But I feel like I've hit a brick wall, as in, I don't think I learn super much from them anymore.
Which is why I've tried to "help" others, but when I go onto stack overflow or try to help on open source projects, I understand nothing and I'm definitely not able to help with anything. (They're all about things/subjects I've never heard of before)
So my question is mostly, how did you guys get from where I am today, to where you are today?
Thanks for even reading this.
(I know java, android dev, and Js/node.js)
(Sry about the English ;D)7 -
@all, picture the scene, your employer hired a Dev into an equal level role to you, he was running his own company, handed off to his father and brother. You now hear your employer is purchasing 40% in said company to outsource 'certain' projects too (off shore developers). You don't really rate this developers skills AND the work so far from this outsourced group has been sub par. How does this make you feel? What issues do you perceive? Am i right to feel concerned?5

Been working really hard last 5-6 weeks and achieved a lot with the help of my ADD meds (concerta, basically ritalin). However I noticed that week ago I reached full blown burnout. I feel mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted. I already signed up for a metting at doctor's to come up with a plan how to fix this asap so I could get back in my flow. My question is how do you guys combat adrenal fatigue and recover from it?7

I need your advice. I'm a junior developer and I overslept and missed not only a stand up meeting but a review as well and I feel like shit. This is my first time missing a meeting, though I feel like I've dirtied my name a bit. Am I holding myself to too high of a standard or am I rightfully upset with myself, and how do I make it right? Should I be concerned about losing my job?15 -
Hey guys, I am getting into game engine development and I wanted to start off with a simple 2D engine. But I don't know which source is the best to stick with.
So if anyone who has any experience in this field could tell me what course/tutorial they feel is the best to begin with, it would be really helpful.
My programming knowledge is strongest in C++.
I would also like to know as to how long would it take for a normal C++ dev to come up with a half decent game engine?4 -
There are many issues with designers. Let's skip hamburger fuckups, navigations on bottom or other stuff. What pisses me of most are tables. Simple tables. As many times as i remember i told them: plaease, design this table with full borders around cells. Your design will make problems with rowspans a cellspans. Why you keep doing that? This is not like tables list in your fucking IS, where you tracking your shitty designers tasks.
How to talk with them? Blow their dicks off before discussion so they feel happy?
But you know, i'm just coder... I have no main word on design things.10 -
I've been wanting to start a web community in the small city I come from for a while.
I presented this idea to my best-friend which he for some reason did not fully engage in, this was a bit strange.
A couple of months later, I found out that his little brother has started the same concept, and is close to publishing the site.
I'm a bit confused, and at the same time angry. The feeling I have now is to go home, lock myself in a room for 1 week, and build the damn site for myself.
I'm not sure what do to because I feel this constantly happens, every time I have an idea, someone else goes and build it. I'm assuming it's me, and that I don't take immediate actions.
Any tips on how one can start a web-based community in the city he lives in? How should I get more people evolved, through FaceBook, Meetup/eventBrite, talk to locals?5 -
Ugh Android OS is so vast and intimidating, i feel so unsure about it even after 3 years of learning it.
Like now i am about to graduate, so i need to look for a job. Those companies require knowledge of libraries like data binding, dagger, rx fabric, etc the stuff that i never personally used in any of my personal projects because i was able to handle all my stuff by general programming knowledge.
At the same time the os itself is so large and full of apis that i want to learn and spend my time upon. Like Android stores data, renddrs media , its databases, its lifecycles, gradle building , manifest etc
Can any devs share how they are proceeding with this os? I always feel like i am floating on the surface and not diving deep enough :/2 -
If I have to hear one more time about how Sharepoint can do X for you, X := {multiple datastore search, Knowledge Base, etc} I will angrily look at some kittens and really make them feel uncomfortable :p
Maybe raise an eyebrow;
this is getting real now!2 -
My jobs requires me to be at office 6 days a week but I am learning a lot. But I am stressed out and on the edge. One day off is not working out for me and they won't change their policy. Is there anyone else who is in a same situation like me? How are you handling it? Should I be part of this company anymore? Because sometimes I feel like quitting.

I feel like i am not living my life correctly. i have made myself as a slow learner for the things i like .
i would want to dedicate a specific amount of time to a particular topic until i make written notes of it, repeat that stuff in my mind and make sure its engraved it in my brain.
if i don't get that time in normal routine, i force that time into my routine by disrupting my sleep/ reducing social interaction/ skipping the actual work to learn about it until i feel satisfied.
But even after that i am left unhappy, because i realize that the particular skill in question is a very small part of the whole product and i will be still dedicating a lot of time to the project.
I also feel sad because my Saturday got wasted learning this whole concept, which now looks very small, when i could have gone to a date or have a relaxing time with friends/family
How do you learn new stuff? for eg, i am learning php via udemy videos(5-6 mins each) since last 4 days. my goal is to make a small blogging website in 30 days. so far i have watched 10 videos and only able to learn how to setup mamp server, echo, some stuff on variables ,data types and functions.
How much would you have learned in a weekend? what is your approach?1 -
Help me out a bit, functional programming fans!
I'm experimenting with functional programming through JavaScript.
I created some dummy data to experiment with and created a simple function to query the data. I would like to get all elements, whose type attribute is not 'x'. A simple solution can be seen under the 'original code' part.
Under the 'fully functional code' part I gathered some frequently used general purpose functions, which I assembled into the function composition at line 45.
I'm having a bad taste in my mouth and feel that I've gone too far. I basically replaced every language element for a function. Is this the goal of functional programming? Is this how a perfectly functional code should look like?1 -
This is a question with a bit of backstory. Bear with me.
Firstly, i’m back (again😂) now pursuing my software engineer goal at a university.
I had a group project course this spring and me and my group produced a kinda half assed product that could help within sports teams, for a customer at the university (won’t go into details). After the course ended I couldn’t go home to northern Sweden and stayed in my student accomodation for the summer. So I took the chance and offered myself to continue work on the product this summer to make it more usable and functionable, and they hired me (first real devjob!🥰)! Now when I look into the parts of the code that I did not write (our team communcation were bad), I realize I don’t understand fully how it works and therefore feel it’s better for me (also to learn more) to rewrite some parts my old group produced, and to actually make it easier to improve. Now finally the question; how do you feel about taking on a product, scraping some parts to rewrite them, and (in your perspective), improve them?4 -
One of my big gripes about PyQt5 in particular is lack of info, especially on advanced topics. This includes books. I found this on Amazon today:
Qt5 Python GUI Programming Cookbook: Building responsive and powerful cross-platform applications with PyQt https://amazon.com/dp/B079S4Q9T2/...
It was just published in July. I’m thinking I might buy the Kindle book.
On reviewer complained about lack of info on how to handle child dialogs (after fighting with child dialogs that had their own children and dialogs with threading and all that, I feel you, brother). But the 2 reviews it’s gotten look fairly positive.
I wonder how advanced the book gets. Going to read the sample later.4 -
Company I applied to is going to make an offer me tomorrow. I feel like they will try to kinda lowball me. Is it rude to ask for lets say plus 10 percent as soon as I receive the offer ? In your experience have you did this and how it ended?1

Hi, I'm currently an intern and building a web application with react. I'm only doing frontend and have no access to the backend.
After some development we want to host the website and the backend guy is building a pipeline.yml for me. Fast forward website doesn't work because of missing environmental files in the pipeline. I added them on azure but somehow you need to do that in the pipeline.yml as well. I have no idea how to do that and he said: "Find out for yourself and tell me later"
How should I work from here? I feel left alone with that backend stuff. Why should I fix this pipeline, isn't it his job or is it frontend?6 -
my sleep schedule is spectacularly fucked. i go home from school, fall asleep, wake up at 1 AM to try and work on my various web app projects, stay up until time for school the next day. this fucked up schedule has decreased my productivity a lot and i have done nothing to fix it. i feel like in the future when being productive actually matters this will be a huge set back for me. any idea how i can fix this?2

Any tips for eye soreness? I don't feel it when I am working in front of the computer but it gets sore at the end of the day and few minutes in the morning the day after.I typically see the screen for around 9 hours.
Is this common? How do you devs overcome this? How do you devs protect your eyes? I'd like to get any tips from you people.
Thanks5 -
🤪😳😅 this is how i feel about the fact that i will be primarily writing c# at my new job. Any .NET guys with a few tips and pointers on how not to fail. Last time i wrote c# was 7 years ago at least. I will be working on some big project which i love being a part of but I can’t help but feel scared. What if i fail?2

so i've been working with a ux/graphic designer on a pretty large project that will likely have many services attached to it, it's been in "active" development for about a year now. something that concerns me however is how uncertain i feel about what i'm doing, constant questions like "am i doing this right", "is this secure", and many like them plague my mind while i'm coding and it's really discouraging. when i was just learning i didn't really take any heed from these questions, intact i never even really thought about them so why am i now? i feel kid if i'm able to just work and have fun i will be so much more productive and happy. my partner has been learning front end and has been doing great me i'm working on front and back end. i have been making most of the decision in regards to our stack but i feel like i'm making them arbitrarily and to attribute to this fact, i have switched things up several times, we went from react to an mvc framework and now i'm considering going back to react. i just can't seem to keep on track with my decisions, if any of you have experienced this before i would really like some advice on how i can be productive and again and not fall into this never-ending abyss of doubt.3

Do you randomly feel intense hatred towards people in your friend circle ?
Well I am
I have tons of friends to hang out and randomly talk about well... random things.
When it comes to more engineering related dev discussions I only have a couple friends.
One I don't speak to since he isn't very passionate about the field other than the money aspect. It's hard discussing with a person who can only see the monetary aspect of things.
Well this other guy was my only companion on this journey.. but he gave up and took on an acting career. Tbh I feel cheated. I don't have a companion / rival / anybody who I can really talk heart to heart when I get a random fun idea.
I understand how acting is on its own a pretty difficult skill but I definitely am feeling intense hatred for this fucker.
No knowledgeable guy puts himself in a situation where he has to decide between acting and electronics/programming .. and I considered this bloody motherfuck my intellectual companion.
This is what it feels like to be lonely despite having so many people around.
I'm going to work on creating a split personality. It's my only option to surviving in an engineering deprived country as mine (India).
The same country where 70% people end up engineers and most of them don't know what an oscilloscope is.1 -
I'm currently working at a company that builds escape-room alike games (sadly that's how I can best describe it). My boss lives by the "I like this therefore this is how it should be!"-mentality, and this has led to none of the rooms having anything in common with any of the other game. I need help finding a way to inform him that we need to unify the look and feel of our games to create a overall feel and a "brand".
Do any of you have any good way of showing that this is a good idea and a way to prove that it's needed, straight out telling him this has not worked.7 -
Hi everyone
I have a python script that continuously collects data for me. I want to be able to display that data on a node js server. How should I go about this? I was thinking of maybe having the python script send get requests to the server but I feel that is not the right answer. Let me know if u guys need more info, thanks!5 -
Hello everyone,
Hopefully you can help me with this, i feel like my math skills are really bad, even though I come from an engineering background we all know how most classes on uni goes...
So the thing is, I’ve seen brilliant(the website) as an option to start from the beginning with a good mathematic foundation.
Is brilliant worth the 10$ or there are better options?6 -
The ransomware which has been affecting many places over the weekend is named perfectly for how I feel going into work this morning after being away for a week training wannacry.

i never cheated but due to unprovoked betrayal, i understand why people cheat. If i cheat now i wouldnt feel bad at all. If i find another innocent person and break their heart i wouldnt care. Because nobody felt bad or cared when it happened to me. This vicious cycle of evil then spreads like a virus to other innocent people, turning them into a victim, and then in 99% cases it molds them into an evil person, who continues to spread the same evil.
This is how it all starts. This is why the society today is fucked.
all of this suffering
because of 1 born-evil person.14
