We moved to a new office floor and got a brand new set up. My new extension monitor died just after 4 hours of use, it was showing a black screen a with couple of colourful lines running down the screen.

Got the IT guy to come and replace it. He says he must test it with a display cable even though the screen was dead without any input source. (Ok fine cbf arguing with you, just do it.)

Realising I was right, he gave the ok for another guy to replace my monitor.

Second guy comes to my desk and realised he forgot the electric screwdriver. (Sigh, how long must I wait...) After he finally finished installing​ the new monitor he plugged the display cable into a random display port without looking.

Since the monitor wasn't displaying anything, he jumped into asking me to restart my computer. I gave him "the wtf are you stupid face" and just said "NO". I looked over to where he plugged the cable and asked why he plugged into the "dp out" port.

I plugged the cable to the correct port and monitor was working.

Felt like I can do their job better without any experience in IT support.

PS. Don't play the "please restart your computer" card on me. I also work in technology.

My first ever programming lesson was pretty awkward. I had zero knowledge of any coding so even the basics were new. Everytime the teacher said "string" I was kinda cringing and feeling awkward, but nobody else seemed bothered. I was laughing inside like the teenager I was, looking around for someone to share a giggle with. But nothing.

The explanation:
The word "string" in dutch means thong. Me not knowing any other uses for this word was a little flustered 😬.

I was a good programmer.

My teachers always impressed by work..
I was like coming up on my own solutions not from books. Never remembered any algo but still the one who solve mostly every problems

What I did wrong during my home office cleaning session this morning:
- put soap on my mouse mat
- snapped my enter key
- vacuumed up my F8 key
- absent-mindedly cut my ethernet cable
- lost my zero key
- dropped my backup hard drive (data was recoverable, but I need a new drive)
- lost one of the nose pads on my glasses
- got a cocktail stick stuck in a USB port
- exploded my mouse by using the wrong type of battery

Things I did good:

Today was bad day.
- only had 3 hours of sleep
- 1.5h exam in the morning
- work in the afternoon until 8pm
- 1 drive crashed in a RAID5 array

- I have to get up in 4 hours again to start a new copying task

I had an old rant somewhere about the most unproductive meeting I’ve had.

It was when I joined a new team. I was asked to hold a meeting to solve the issue of why nothing gets done on time and nobody showed up to the meeting on time including the manager.

Manager: We are now using libraries for everything. I estimate based on nothing that this will increase productivity x20.

I was working on a website. I noticed that entries were submitting yesterday but today new entries were not showing up on database. It was like my database refused to insert new rows but there was no new error in log. I kept trying for almost half an hour, read all the answers on stackoverflow, read docs, tried different methods. Nothing worked. I was fucked up. Completely fucked up.

In frustration, I just stared my database for 10 mins without a single blink, and then I noticed this thing 'showing 25 out of 78 rows'

As devs we like to complain about our jobs. But I just want to take a moment and acknowledge how truly amazing writing software is. Nothing else has given me so much joy and happiness. The endless stream of new things to learn, the elusive art of clean code, and deep understanding of systems required for architecture. There is so much depth to this career we have all chosen and I hope you guys love it just as much as I do.

You know, sometimes I wish I had friends who knew how to code or new a bit about the programming world. Then I could show them my projects and they could help out of they wanted. I could also get them to properly criticize my designs and script. Installed Linux on my grandma's computer because she uses it only to browse internet so there was nothing new to learn for her other than how to shut it down which is dead simple and the win10 she had previously was slow as fuck. So far I've checked various chips for visible damage, and nothing except a blown fuse on both machines. Apparently it takes dual 9vAC and single 5vDC. The 9 powers the SID and the video output, the VIC-II heatsink is off, and I've tested the PSU voltages and one of the 9v's is dead. I'll be getting new fuses and a new PSU soon. Any recommendations on other things to check or things to do when they're done? Pic included because why not.

I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I just found a new WhatsApp Crash Exploit. Full denial of service right there. An attacker could send a message to a Chat (be it private Chat or group Chat) and everyone who receives the message has no chance of starting WhatsApp again. It crashes and won't restart.
Tested on latest version on Samsung Galaxy S6 and S8. Don't know if it works on other versions but I am pretty sure it does. (It's midnight here, noone online to test)

The fun thing is, I knew this Bug for a long time but when I last tested it, nothing happened. Which means this Crash is only possible because someone at WhatsApp programmed a new Feature...

TL;DR - Developers, do not buy HP Stream models laptop unless they are selling at $1.

Cannot even handle Sublime + Firefox + LAMP use case well. On lubuntu OS with literally nothing else on it. Sublime crashes every hour.

Now I am learning how to code using other tools before I can buy a better replacement for it. Failure with gedit; very slow and sluggish. Currently trying Geany.

Made an Android app a while ago. I needed some pet project so I decided to go with Java for Android. First time, no experience at all.

So everything went ok, I had a little help from a colleague, structuring code, and pushing to the store. Work done app was doing ok.

A year later I came back to this project. I needed to fix a bug - date time and daylight savings crap. 😥

Spent a week on it. Ready to push a new version to the store, with some extra features! Build apk. All good.

Wait. I need to sign the APK? Wtf. I had to format my hard drive. How do I recover my fucking certificate?

No fucking way. I can't restore the certificate. Or get the keystore back. The solution is to create a new app with a brand new package name?

Well, then I update phpStorm and everything became fine. Ok, JetBrains, good idea to say user about new release version and make update:) Seriously, it works fine. Yesterday night, pushed code that work normally to prod server, website down, internal server error, too many connection to MySQL server, tried to fix it for 4 hours, nothing to do, removed the new code, still the same problem, in my head, I told myself that I'm not good at programming (not the first time), send an email to the host, they tell me the problem is from them and they fixed it. Several months of work got deployed and suddenly the app stops displaying user submitted images. No new changes that looks related went live and the images seem to be stored and read by the code. Nothing looks odd about it other than images not displaying. 4 hours of frustrated developers later an accidental newline at the top of a routing file is removed and all is fine.

Last night I dreamed that I figured out a new complicated computer language... it was the best feeling until I woke up and realized it didn’t exist and all that work was for nothing!! Why can’t dreams be more productive?!

It is increasingly difficult to believe that Google CAPTCHAs are not deliberately made unsolvable.

Everyone hates CAPTCHA, that is nothing new. As most people know, CAPTCHA frequently whines "please try again" after the user provides the correct answer. Sometimes it shows "Please select all matching images." when no new images with the named subject exist. However, now Google is taking it to a new level.

After clicking, the pictures take five seconds to fade to white and the new pictures take another five seconds to fade in. And CAPTCHA challenges have an expiry duration of two minutes. This causes CAPTCHAs to expire before it is possible to solve them.

Does Google think I am not a human because I don't have the time to waste whack-a-moling random StreetView pictures?

I've been working for the last 5 years on some large legacy code used in production, more than 100K LOC, poor comments (when existing) often outdated, huge parts of code that can no longer be reached, over-engineered class hierarchy, functions of thousands lines, huge parts of deprecated code that cannot be removed because "someone might still be using it". Statistically, every small change caused 3 new issues somewhere else and every bug fix or new feature required 10 times the time that would be necessary with a decent codebase. But after five years in hell I can finally say that... Oh wait, nothing changed, the code is still legacy and nobody is going to do anything about that.

The display on my new RPi4 doesn't work properly. Plugged the SD card into a model 3 and everything is fine. RPi4 boots and I can SSH into it but any display I connect it to detects nothing.

During the summer I was part of a three person brand new software team. One of my co-workers had a rubber duck, and explained rubber duck debugging. I was working on a new feature for this legacy project.. Just minding my own buisness then all out of the blue I got an email from our client (before the email I exported the live database because I needed to reproduce a weird bug) saying the sync stopped working

So a few days ago windows decides to update. No alerts, nothing. Just a random update. 4 HOURS LATER it's still going "hi, we have a new update for you". By hour 5 it's finally done. My wonderful new desktop is a black screen with broken keyboard drivers (mouse still works somehow) and the other user accounts are also broken (but explorer somehow still loads). Then these motherfuckers have the nerve to send a dialog saying "congratulations on updating Windows to the latest version" ...... ;-;

reinstalled windows and everything works again. just need to download ~500Gb of programs on a >1mb/s connection.

1. Nothing lasts forever and you always need to be prepared for change.

That might be technology acquired by other company and dropped completely by all of people or new technology take over the market for a year and is gone after that and no one remember about it.

2. If you go opposite way then all of people around you that might be actually the best way.

That learned me to always look around for new stuff cause this small stuff that people make today can be big company next day just cause they got annoyed by things and start something new.

3. Trust nothing that you see.

4. Quality and speed doesn’t matter when you start doing something but consistency matters a lot.

When you start doing something you suck and you need to be ok with fact that you’re going to make lots of stupid mistakes and learn from them.
When you start new prototype you don’t need dozen tools to finish it, you don’t need performance or perfection, you need consistency to finish it.

The company give to me a new laptop with windows Home Edition,
After few months I have installed Pro Version.
1 month later the laptop didn't work anymore, nothing on display, no beeps, zero.
Tried to replace ram and check but nothing works.
The CTO asked the supplier and they asked about SO, and they said it's not turning ON because i have installed Windows Pro.
Than the CTO had a brilliant idea: try put the hard disk in another laptop and install Windows Home, and put back in the defective one. I refused to to that, it's stupid and he insisted, then I put the laptop in his desk and I said: if you want do this you can do, im not stupid enough to do this.
He got really mad, 1 week later i got a brand new one 😅

We were redesigning our template apps into a single one and I repeatedly said to our pm "don't get someone to merge all the old backends into a single api get them to build it up with the new front end"

They ignored me now I have to spend goodness knows how long fixing it because the requirements for the new fe are completely different and it's all broken.

Not to mention it was rushed converted from js to typescript and nothing is typed.

Its going to be a fun Monday.

L1 support requested to terminate an EC2 instance on which one of our apps seemed to be misbehaving. The node was terminated after few min.

L1 later realized that that instance didn't belong to that app, but instead it was one of the RabbitMQ nodes.

Then, after some panicking we remembered that HA was enabled, so nothing should've been lost.

Later, we realized that the recent RMQ upgrade necessitated a new cluster on which HA was NOT enabled!

I had joined a new company and got access to their codebase. They were updating password on MD5 hash of user name and their email in get request. No password validation, no token based authentication, nothing.

That's it, you get change user password.

On the last day, before I started working again, literally Sunday night, a pile of garbage non-urgent changes were pushed directly to remote.

Managed to get my awful phone rooted and Lineage working on it despite it not being supported on my phone.
I actually really like my phone now, its almost like a brand new one.

This is not meant as motivation so much as it is meant as a reminder. Our colleagues may be garbage. Our clients may be garbage. Our bosses, the interns, the new dev, and almost certainly ourselves, are almost always garbage.

Am I the only one who feels useless and like a piece of shit when not doing something? I started a new project after over a week of doing absolutely nothing and now I feel happier than while I was being an organic paperweight.

Got my new pc up and running, asrock x370 killer sli/ac mobo, ryzen 2200g cpu and radeon rx550 with 12g ram (don't ask). Nothing fancy but sure beats my old am2 system! New pc is so quiet :D

Finished my planned work for current sprint 3 days early. Nobody needs help, nothing to do until new tasks are given out. Expected to feel great. Feeling useless.

When you have two managers and one of them is trying to screw you into a position on his team even though you have made it clear that you want nothing to do with that type of development.

I am looking for a new job now...

To be fair, I don't have my degree yet (just two more semesters...) but I'm working as a dev second year now and studying is really nothing compared to real-world experience. Yeah, I know I haven't said nothing new.

When you get talked into a new job by a friend and leave your old one. Just to find out the new place is nothing as advertised and you dislike it more every second 💩

There is nothing more beautiful than having to embed legacy shit into an new website because the customer is a cheap arse and doesn't want to budget the whole pissing redesign package of his website.

For the past week I've been rewriting an application with just pure php, html, js and css (with a sprinkle of bootstrap), and I gotta say that in this new modern world of frameworks & CMSs, it feels great building a "problem solving" application with nothing but my bare hands!

You know what's funny?

Gender bias at work is usually AGAINST MALES, like seriously I had a great year in my new job and I'm happy about it, but end up finding out that the boss awarded only females in our team😒

If society should stop treating women like objects well how about treating men like human beings?

There was weeks where I saved the bosse's ass and worked for over 60 HOURS and still nothing.

I ran my PHP script file in Firefox, only to be greeted by everything else but my webpage. I scanned through the errors and looked them up on Google. As I was only restricted to a basic text editor, I had no choice but to prepare myself to look through hundreds of lines of code spanning across different files in my project.

Minutes passed, found nothing. An hour has passed, and I can feel my brain power fading away into oblivion, but I still found nothing. I took a stab in the dark and made a few changes in the code, hoping that it'd solve the problem, only to be slapped with a big fat 'nope' in the browser. I lost all hope for the day and decided to give it a rest and come back tomorrow to try again.

New day, new me, fresh new energy to tackle the code! But after one failed attempt at debugging and I was back to the same state as yesterday.

But... at the corner of my eye, something at the end of a line caught my attention. I moved my cursor to that position, pressed the key on top of my pinky finger down, saved the file, and ran the script. It worked.

Who knew how problematic a single missing semicolon could be :3

Test A succeeds when run solo. Test A fails when run in conjunction with Test B. Obviously, some kind of messy state that isn't isolated per test.

I realize what it is, so I add a new feature to address it.

Test still fails, it had nothing to do with that.

I finally realize what it was. One liner fix.

Yay for a new (useless?) feature that isn't getting backed out.

Spaghetti codes makes a person feel frustrated, non-productive even slightly depressed, and even do refractoring takes time of production and slows things down in the short term there's nothing like that "new feeling " after you successfully re-organize and re-structure a project.

The skies seem more blue the motivation re-appears and new ideas make the project feel worth it of your time again

And here I am again, reading test cases that basically boil down to:

Why would anyone feel the need to write these kind of tests? They don't do anything. If I set up my mock a certain way, of course I will have that data, esp. if the unit under test only applies the data AS IS. (Funily enough through another component that already has the relevant dummy tests in place making these tests extra redundant and obsolete.)

You would think that one test case with dummy data suffices, yet no, there are like 30 examples that lie to you about apparent business logic cases, yet in the end the way you set up the mock decides what you will or won't get.

What's the point?

Any Ideas for tools to make?

I keep phones for two years, or try to anyway. Later this year I will hit that two year mark, and rather than excitement at the idea of getting a new phone, I find myself thinking that there's nothing out there that excites me at all. And also, my current phone is in no way deficient. It doesn't hold a charge like when it was new, but that's totally normal, and as degraded as it may be, it's still not a problem at all.

A powerful phone with a snapdragon and 6 or more GB of memory, that measures under 5" and doesn't have some bullshit OEM skin on it. To my knowledge, it doesn't exist.

Nothing like a new year to rekindle that old pile of backlog issues from 2016.

I've been using an arch based distro that really required pretty much nothing in terms of know-how to get it set up. Tonight, I randomly checked the ~/.bashrc file today and found some cute aliases.

I started coding by playing really bad video games. After being suckered into using what allowance I had, I started hacking them to make them better. This led to hacking up MySpace... (ha) That led to actually trying out new languages and eventually unity3d/c# to learn proper coding techniques. I regret nothing!

I was just watching a livestream YouTube video hoping to learn something new but the streamer clearly has no idea what he is doing. He was just looking things up all the time and failing miserable to find anything useful for the program he's trying to build.

Funny thing, the last statement he said was: "I give up, bye!" and that's it!! 1.5 hours of my life wasted for nothing.

Just sent a series of design visuals for the client to look at for his new website, expecting some feedback. A few hours later he sends an email saying, "my main competitor" with a web link and nothing else. What the fuck am i supposed to do with that? Id already studied all his competitors prior to commencing the design visuals, how am i supposed to respond without being condescending?

New job, new city, my job is very good & coworkers as well, but since I'm an introvert I'm not good at making new friends, I'm not socializing other than talking to my colleagues at during office hours. After office I come at my flat and do nothing wish I was good enough to have friend. Or some girl to hangout with its so lonely during weekends.

A new year, a new job.

After a years hard graft learning front end code I finally landed my first dev job!

Even though the job is a while away, there will be nothing stopping me getting there and learning all I can in this industry.
