My girlfriend is amazing:
After a long uphill battle trying to finish a huge open source project I started months ago. She noticed I was getting a little deflated.
So she donated a small amount to the donation page to lift my spirits.

So, our clients missed their internal deadline this weekend so we as vendor were also forced to work for the weekend and implement new features in a very short period. I implemented new features and my project manager stayed to support the testing and sent me home as I already had tickets bought for the movie.
As someone who hasn't done any developing in a long long time he even tried to implement some changes and complex JavaScript dom manipulation that they asked during testing so that I could be with my gf.
Few hours later he called me and with a sad voice said he is simply too slow and needs my help after all . I came and we stayed until 00h and solved everything. He paid for the movie and taxi.
The thing that impressed me was that he was willing to took over my job so that I wouldn't break my deal.
Best project manager ever!

It happened 2 nights ago.
We had a whatsapp project for the distributed application programming class, my project mate and me were coding for 2 weeks whole day to finish it, especially with the end-to-end encryption feature that teacher asked, till 2 nights ago the project was trash, the private chat wasn't working and and nothing else is done we had only the UI, we was really doomed especially we had 1 more day to deliver the software, and we decided to deliver the project as a trash and get marks from the UI and the presentation.....
Till the night before deadline at 8 pm
I wanted to try fix some interface pictures and to make it better......
The next thing it was 6 am and the project is full working..
When I told my project mate he was not believing, I had to swear multiple times fot him and hat to go and show him the project by the eye.
We delivered the prohect and got 22/25 😁😁😁
It was incredible I didn't believe my self at first place.

Backstory is too long. Lets just say that they fucking expect too much as we're friends. Assuming that paying 10$ for your domain every year entitles me to work on every ducking detail of your website. Not to forget I gave this person an insane discount on the entire project.

There was once this customer, which wanted a project done. It was for around 2/3 weeks of work. The arranged cost was 500€, but when I said how long I'll need, he said:
No. I need it done in 5 days. Every day over, I deduct 50€ from the payment.
I was out of the building in less than a minute.
Fuck this type of customers.10 -

I'm so so happy to have joined devRant: it gave me lots of motivation to work on my personal projects. In the last two days I worked more on an old dream/project than I did in the last year. TWO. DAYS.
Don't know for how long this motivation will last, but - for now - thank you so much, people :')3 -
I’m a college senior now. The best CS class I ever took was in high school. Our teacher didn’t know how to write software, instead he went around on day one and has us submit proposals for year long projects.
With each project, we had to find mentors in the industry who could help us if we got blocked. Every other week we meet with the teacher (who was more a facilitator) and described how the project was coming.
The results? We had final products that were well beyond the expectations of a high school and more impressive than any project I’ve seen at my university.
Why can’t all STEM programs be like that? Students have incredible ability, but are blocked by traditional education. Let students set the bar.1 -
!rant For my uni project I have been developing a anti ransom-ware price of software which had a main purpose of damage limitation/containment in a business environment.
Some course mates were critising it saying yeah when is ransom ware ever really looked at these days, (they developed a chat app), then the news struck about the Nhs hack and now my Lecturer can't get enough of the project and suddenly the marks for real world application seem to be in my favour 🤘

So a few colleagues left the company leaving me as the most experienced person for our project and I hated to do all the babysitting for the new colleagues and trying to hold on against the new levels of pressure.
But I have just realized, that this is a great opportunity for me to evolve from a regukar worker to a leader.
Also this opens the door to creating my own company. I haven't felt this excited in a long time.3 -
Have you ever just worked on a project for so long that you just can’t stay motivated in it? Like you enjoy the project itself but the process of not knowing when it’ll be finished kills the motivation? Is this a normal feeling?14

I think the most humbling for me was deleting a table from my capstone (semester long graduation project) and messing up the online IDE so bad, I kicked everyone in web class off the IDE in the middle of their midterm. If I knew what I did, I'd promise to not do it again, but I don't, so I just don't use the IDE.
Made me realize that even if things shouldn't be dependent, they might be.2 -
Sooo I've been working on an ancient php 5.6 project that did not have any documentation and was a homemade "framework" created 7 years ago. The original creator is long gone and no one else knows a lot about this project.
When I first looked into it I almost immediately noticed the security flaws...

Earlier today I had a old schoolmate of mine PM me.. long time no see, yada yada, don't beat around the bush please... Turns out that he wanted to get a bot for OldSchool RuneScape and found a bot that was paid... And didn't want to shell out 70-odd shekels and wanted me to write a "private script". Looking at the program he linked, it looked like it'd easily take thousands of lines of code and well over half a year to reimplement.
I'm sure that it's a problem we've all had at some point, and with old friends it's especially hard to deal with. Would you give in to something that's obviously gonna be a trainwreck of a project? Tell them that they're an ass for even thinking of something crazy like this? It's not exactly hard to get offended by something like this, as if our time and expertise is worth absolutely nothing.
Honestly, I just told him.. this will take several months to implement. Here's another project I wrote (https://git.ghnou.su/ghnou/cv if you're interested) and looking at the commit log, you can see that I started it half a year ago, and more or less finished the project 3 months later. That project took ~100 lines of code and this project would easily take thousands, and months if not over a year of work. It's easy to see that it's unreasonable. Now he's going to get a project that's behind Patreon instead, after I told him that it's completely reasonable to ask money for a project like this. What's more, when private it would cost a hell of a lot more - my time isn't free.
Long story short, just honestly explain that so and so is why it's unreasonable, and this and that are other more viable solutions because such and so. Non-technical people aren't necessarily unreasonable because they're dicks, most of the time it's just ignorance. Nothing wrong with that, and mistakes happen to the best of us :)3 -

One of the guys in my uni group project accused me of bullying, shutting him out of the group, ignoring him and taking over his work. He complained to head of year, I had to have a "discussion" with head of year, welfare tutor and my personal tutor.
For supporting evidence, I brought the message he'd posted in our team Facebook group where he told me to do the thing I was doing. The discussion didn't last long, but it seemed he was unhappy with me asking questions, mean things like "I need a draft api to do my work, why don't we sit down and design it instead of the UI you're working on?"
Conclusion? He "worked on a separate project". Got to the end of the year, the whole class went for pub drinks, someone else came up to me, had been through the exact same thing, exact same person, different group project.
Group projects teach you to hate people.5 -
At my previous employer my boss asked me how long a project would take. Told him about a week maybe two. He then informed me it was due that day. Apparently the client gave it to him months ago. I worked a 35 hour weekend to make it happen. Then he complained that my weekly time sheet was higher than normal. He didn't think it was accurate and underpaid me. So glad I got out of agency work.6

I'm finally realising my long time dream and making a programming language. It's a functional language resemblent in both appearance and usage to lambda calculus. I'll mostly be making plans down to the finest details until the end of summer, at which point if I can gauge the challenge I can hopefully submit this as a graduate project.

That strange moment an entire PHP project no longer throws any errors, warnings or notices and you don’t know if you should believe it or not.
It’s been a long day trawling the logs file by file, action by action, surely I’ve missed something or it’s just waiting to break like hell when I commit the changes. -
I and my mates finally finished the project : a console calculator that manages parenthesis, infinite numbers, the four major operators and also all the bases from 1 to 94
We were not allowed to use stdlib except for malloc, stdio was disallowed too, but we had the unistd write, read and sizeof ahaha
That was a long road of a week but finally we did it :D2 -

My company took over a project that was previously sent overseas . (PHP, laravel 5.1) so I was pointed a lead developer in this project, when I emailed the "senior developer " from the previous company about version control and code documentation. He assured me there was nothing to worry about . ... I found 450 line methods without comments and as version control I found zip files with dates as the name ... fML this is gonna be a long summer14

Roblox has come a long way. Been working on what started as a small project and now its been about 2 years and its finally coming together! As roblox still has ways to go to make it easier on developers. I cant wait to move to unreal engine and make somthing great!

"Getting me up to speed" apparently consists in a 20 minute-long demo on a project I've never heard of with a technology I don't know.

Project Manager and I went to a meeting with the client, and a talk started about one task which was estimated to 20, but took us 40 hours to be finished.
The client asked me:
''How is it possible that it took you double of the estimated time?''
and the PM turned his head to my direction and said:
''Really, how did it take you so long?''

Recently in a project of mine people started to raise tons of issues and suggesting fixes "just slap this module on it", "just do this", "just do that". And no respect for the project whatsoever. Code contributions? Don't even think about it.
The users raising these do not know what language the project is written in, they do not know whether it supports modules at all (let alone that particular one), and they have no idea whatsoever what the code is like, or how this suggestion 99% of the time would not at all integrate with the overall structure of the project. And aside from all that, don't fucking tell me what to do with my project!
My question is, how do you deal with these people? All I can think of is "wontfix™️" or even "cantfix™️" in some cases. Given that this is an endless slew of users, anything long-term?1 -

Haven't used it since and hopefully never will again, but understanding recursion and keyboard input in Assembly (uni project)
After a long (4 days) sleepover with my friends, with 14 hours a day of slamming our heads against abstract registers, we could finally program the factorial and take floating numbers as input and output them on the screen. It was nothing but pain, but the moment we got it, the sky had opened before us :D

I’m a long time Objective-C and Swift developer...I’ve been asked to “research” a project using React Native.
It felt dirty to be writing an iOS app using JavaScript.
I’m still not sure why and how React Native is better/faster than native Swift.

The. Fuck. I absolutely hate it when my supervisor asks me for a time estimate on a project when I have never used the language/framework for that project before. It's like saying, "Here's a winding path you've never run before that you need to run through. How long will it take you to get to the end?" Gosh, it's like the don't ever think about what they just said.3

It has been a long long time since I posted, a lot has happened the past couple of months.
I lost my grandfather, I got a nice dev job and God I miss ranting here. I finally published my side project and all I have to say is
AWS is a b*tch! But beautiful at the same time, had to learn a lot the old way (trial and error).
I don't have any anime pictures as I've changed phones recently but I find this picture just as awesome.

I've been creating a game in Unity and I made sure to tell all my friends, but now every other day when I see them they ask me if they can play it. It gets a bit old, I try to explain this is a very long-term project and there's nothing to play until it's almost complete. Only a few of them get the memo.11

Boss: How long will it take to finish the project?
Me: (Gives date for finishing dev and deployment.)
Boss: great, sound reasonable.
Me: ...
Boss: wait. Aren't you on vacation the two weeks after that.
Me: jup.
Boss: yeah we are not doing that again. Client can wait another two weeks.
Before someone says no Boss/PM is like that, he was/is a developer too so discussing deadlines and efforts is usually pretty relaxed since he knows our codebase and how long it takes to do things.2 -
Worked on a WordPress Multisite project that required digging around to find ways to hook into areas that weren’t meant to be hooked, create and add custom core files that would withstand updates, ensure certain plugin capabilities were available even if the current site didn’t load them, and a variety of other black magic that I’m too fried to remember off the top of my head.
By the end of the project I more or less felt like a god in WordPress—There’s little I could ever want to get it to do that I didn’t know how to do.
Then again, this is all probably a long way of saying I learned some very bad ways to do things. Mercifully, it’s fully documented with PHPdoc blocks down to the loop level so that even a 3-year-old should be able to figure out the logic...
All this to say, I’m definitely ready for a new project.3 -
Woke up super late (evening), was planning to work on my personal project, but didn't have a table where I can comfortably code and sketch out my ideas.
Hence, dressed up immediately and went to a furniture shop.
Getting table, chair and a bed (which I was planning for a long time) tomorrow.

Long meeting with a coworker presenting a huge, complicated system to track changes to configuration files.
Basically, whenever someone needs to change a config file, this person is supposed to manually enter an entry to a changelog file, and the build system is supposed to give an error if the person forgets to update the changelog.
At the end of the 1 hour long presentation, I raise my hand and say: "we are already using git for our config files, look:
$ git log <filename>
here you can see the list of changes to the file. What you describe is already available, no need to reinvent it."
Long akward silence in the room.
The presenter: "okay, I will look into that. Any other questions?"
Haven't heard about that project since then.1 -
So a client of mine who I've known a long time referred me to a friend of his for a project. OK great! Quoted the guy a price got the OK but didn't know my client had told this friend they would be paying me for the job. Well I found this out when I went to get payment from the guy. I call my client and he proceeds to tell me "yes we told him we would pay for it but thought it would just be included in our project fee which was already paid".. WTF2

I feel really bad for the guy I'm currently working with. I have until roughly the end of August to upskill him in every aspect of 3 different iOS apps because once I move to a new project he will be the entire maintenance team for those apps. Feel like he is getting shafted so badly. The whole process has been poorly managed. The managers don't care how well I train him as long as it doesn't take too many man-days. And they are expecting that they can still pull me back in to help if he gets stuck even after I've moved. Starting to feel like I'm being taken for granted. Can't wait to get off this horrible project.

I just took over a new project from a brand new client today. It's an Android app that he said needed some updates and refactoring, and he said it wasn't well documented but he would add some comments for me before giving me the code. He gave me access to the code today and one class in it is over 1200 lines long with exactly 4 methods in it... the shortest method is still over 200 lines long. There is one comment at the very top:

After my first project (you know, the "Working project I made for fun long ago" code everyone did once, but when you look at it again it looks like sorcery and there's no way to understand it ?), I decided that I'd comment almost everything I'd do... But...
When I begin a project, it's fiiiine and I do my comments the way they should be... AND THEN, WHEN DIFFICULTIES ARRIVES AND I START TO BE TIRED (ie : always) THEY START TO INCLUDE INSULTS OR WEIRD JOKES ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE, MOVIES REFERENCES, AND SOMETIMES THEIR LANGUAGE VARIES. (Like, that project you're doing in English and suddenly there's a comment written in French in the middle of that)
Soo, yeah, even if I do comment my shit now, it isn't more helpful, lol. Maybe I should listen to relaxing music when I code err.
Oh, comments. Damn comments. Someday I'll do those correctly. Maybe.8 -
A dev joins the project. I help him set up, and he has everything up and running. I give him a task to fix a CSS issue, I even tell him what needs to be done. Almost 4 hours later I begin to wonder what's taking him so long and what is he up to. He finally sends me a pull request with just one line of code changed, and leaves for the day, over 45 mins earlier than supposed to.12

On Friday. Client and Project Managers arranged a meeting and wanted me to be there. Client said the meeting will be max 15 Minutes but it was around 2 hours. This client project was due the following week. I was happy because everything was done and excited that the client might be coming down to say how awesome the work was.
The table turned around. They came changed the designed and functionalities. The client said, it won't take long to do it, right? and my Project Manager said No! No! No! don't worry its very easy thing. It will take him around 1 day to do it, it's just all cosmetic changes.
It took me more than a week to get it done, test again, check on browsers. The client was pissed and they fired us. Guess who was blamed for it?1 -
It's been so long without an update on my little encryption project so...
We accomplished the following:

Yesterday i started a new app and i designed some of it but classes i coded will speed up the whole coding of other parts .
Anyways today i needed to work on the server side of the project and when i was working on setting up the databases structures i realized how big is this project (it uses like 3 APIs) so i was unmotivated because its a side project and it takes alot of time and overall it dont worth it and even app may fail or may be successful.
So i said i dont care about how it will turn out
Im gonna do it , and im gonna do it right now
So i did now its 6 am and the server part is almost finished ! 75% done .
It was a secure login system and signup with verifications and more security stuff and the codes that provide the server status and most of the user parts . And some of the features of the app .
The most hard thing remaining is to setup the in app purchases and the APIs .
So if you see a project that is huge .
Dont give up . Just do it as long as you can
And you will see how much you progress !
And the huge project will be a big project ;)
Then a normal project , then a tiny project :P

Just about every meeting goes the same way. I (or a different developer) explain something to the client and they agree and say it makes sense. Great, that takes 5 minutes. Then the project manager jumps in and says the same thing all over again but takes twice as long and confuses the client. By the time I (or the other dev) are able to clarify to the client the boss jumps in with a random comment that is either completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand (showing he wasn't paying attention) or that undermines all we had done up to that point. At this point the project manager then sums it all up with something like "great meeting" and "we'll send you an email". Now both the client and I are confused about what is going on... After the meeting the project manager again reiterates everything that we had already said. A simple 5 minute meeting is now 45 minutes long. So. Stupid.

to make a long story short, i wanted a wrapper for a api (https://esi.evetech.net), but there were none that were updated or actively maintained, so i built my own. the first version had all the non-authed endpoints, and 2 days ago i finally got all the authed endpoints, plus added in features like a config file (for storing the token and project name) :D

I fucking hate the process of setting up IDEs and compilers! All the build files, cmake files, tasks, all that shit.
I undrerstand it's integral part of coding, but fuck, why does it always take so long to set up a stupid project. Just let me start coding ffs.

Just found a unit test in a legacy project that is over 300 lines long, creates files on the server and multiple records in the database, then deletes them all. It takes over two minutes to run.

Well, the project I've been working on is now being terminated.
As the lead dev, I found out by one of the managers sending a public message to the staffing team in one of the channels unrelated to development, which I don't normally check.
Apparently at no point in their "very long discussion" did they think they should let me know of this decision.

In my study program the is this last big course everyone is looking forward to because it combines everything we've learned so far. It's a group project where you build a middle-scale-ish application using ask kind of project management like scrum & co.
We had a good idea and am enthusiastic team.
Well, long story short: our assigned teacher was just bad. He barely listened to our proposal, had no fucking idea who we were at the second meeting and he FUCKING FELL ASLEEP in the last meeting. No feedback. No comments on our progress. Nothing. We could've work with the cleaning lady, she probably would've more feedback for us! -
So for a while I have wanted to build a raspberry pi cluster. In the spirit of shia labeouf I got started last saturday.
I had two pies lying around so I figured I'd run some experiments before I invested in a lot of hardware. After about a day I had turned the two pies into a shared cluster when disaster struck....
I had completely ignored the fact that you cannot run 32 or 64bit software on an arm processor (I know... I'm a java developer). So when I booted my service and the load balancer, I found that nothing worked. So pretty bumbed out, I quit the project.
Later that day I found a crazy guy who had bought a batch of 400 small form factor PSUs (300W) and internally I laughed at him a little. I mean, who's gonna sell 300W irregular power supplies. Then, just as I was about to go to bed I found this guy, he was selling from a batch of CPU-onboard motherboard for 10 bucks each and everything clicked!
I did some quick calculations and decided I could probably gather enough cash to get: 10 motherboards, 10 2GB ram dimms, 10 Sata disks and 14 PSU (in case some fail) and some misc hardware for networking and such.
So... Long story short, I am going to build a cluster computer, the first version is going to have 10 nodes and I am waiting for delivery right now!12 -

Not that there is anything wrong with having them, we are all different. I just believe that insecurities come from giving other people far too much power over ourselves. And I just couldn't care less what people say about me, as long as it IS about me. See?
The more confidence you project the more attention you will get, be it good or bad, it doesn't matter since it is the only way to go up in your workplace. Having a personality besides "ZOmG cOde Is LiFE" really goes a long way also.

So I finished 6-month long frontend studies and the school proposed internship in one of the best local coding companies. I got their test, basically to write 'API-based internet app with any of JS frameworks'.
Me: 'Hooray!!!'. Couple of days later, app delivered. Made with jQuery (because this is the only js framework the fucking coding school taught me). Very long, very personal cover letter sent along with it.
They: ' We are sorry, but we will not consider anything written with jQuery'.
Me: 'OK'. Learning ReactJS alone by myself for two weeks, 8-10 hours daily. Another two weeks - another project delivered. News agregator, fetching from 3 APIs and merging news based on publication time. News categories, news search - all the bells and whistles. Made 100% myself - not some clone from Udemy workshop or youtube.
They: 'Sorry, your project isn't good enough'.
Me (silently): Fuck you too, stupid HR manager. If you aren't able to see the motivation and dedication in a person, shove a dildo up your ass.5 -

Fuck inherited projects!
I was invited to work on a simple migration and integration project for a bank. Thinking it was simple and just a month long project, I accepted it.
... last August 2020.
Now, almost a year later, we have freakin gone nowhere with this project. The bank has had 5 project managers leave over the last 1.5 years that this project has been active.
And every fix I make brings in numerous other problems.
It’s so fucking insane.
No one knows who to blame.
I am currently in call with the bank with about 12 other people who are all watching me fix bugs that they find -.- -
I've been a "firefighter" on our big money-making project for like a year now and probably will be for the next year. Every sprint, fully booked out.
However, this sprint, some people think I have time to brainstorm, learn new tech and attend meetings related to a completely new project.
"Will it done in 2 weeks?"
"How long do you estimate?"
I can knock up a rough version of your fucking application in about a week if someone grows some fucking balls and schedules me some fucking time for it. STFU and stop interrupting my other work. Allocate some time or shove it up your ass so far until you regurgitate it then swallow it again and choke on it. -
I begin with the optimism and the joy that I am creating something new that will improve people's lives.
I listen to the user and analyze the current process in depth.
I try to suggest additional value to the system for the users consideration. Sometimes they do not realize we can improve 10x rather than 2x.
I learn what the users goals are and what they want out of the system. We think about reports and downstream value. Sort of working from the end to the beginning (data ingests and upstream processes that will feed the system).
After the user signs off on the requirements and deliverables and I have a realistic project plan I begin to code.
It works and has worked for me every time for a long long time. -
So I removed all the Eclipse crap from the repository (.settings, .project, etc), add those to the .gitignore, commit and push. The next thing happened is my co-worker found that broken his copy of the code as on Eclipse. That's expected. I told him it's justified to get rid of IDE specific stuff from the repo. All he needed is to set up the project again on his Eclipse.

I helped him out. Wasted 15 min. It shouldn't take that long if I did not try to explain along the way.

I don't think it could be more .net core than this: Several parts of the application ended up failing because of a too long URL. For example we used a List to store selected items in an array and they each looked like this:
&model.selectedIds[n]=true
The server side made more sense but we were running late with the project so we just went with it and hoped no one would use this feature. -
Ok so some of you have probably seen my previous rants about my computer science teacher and our project but I'm just going to summarize all of them and share with you more of my pain.
1. He edits in the production environment. Its a laravel project and he is creating test database migrations IN THE PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT AND SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH FROM MASTER AND DEV.
2. He edits in vim and doesn't follow codestyle even though I printed him off a piece of paper and emailed it to him.
3. He doesn't have any ethic when it comes to more complex things like laravel homestead.
4. He doesnt want me to release features even though he takes really long to do them.
While I love vim and it is my editor of choice, some things should be done in an ide. This is really annoying me and I'm really just considering handing him the project if he can't follow basic outline.6 -

Taking a class at my local university for fun where the point of the class is to build some kind of project for local companies. The teacher talks a lot about Wordpress and how great it is... He's not a dev, and has only worked as a business consultant/pm.... It's gonna be a long semester, but at least he's funny and has good choices in tv shows to include in his lectures.1

We are working on a year long project which is to update the college's old website to one that is not only more user friendly, but is also mobile friendly (unlike the old one). My job for the past week (with another week to go) has been to simply delete all HTML attributes that were used in HTML3, and this entire site was written using it.

Long time ago I worked with a few developers on some relatively simple web project. We were using php and smarty and we used svn for versioning. At one point some dude joined the project as a php developer (with a few years of experience).
After a few days without any commits, we found out that he doesn't know what a SVN is or how to use it. After he learned how to use it we found out in our repo bunch of files with a following naming scheme:

I had a small .NET PoC project I wanted to upload to our git server. So added the project to version control using Visual Studio, meaning that VS created a local repository for it. Then I wanted to push it to the remote repository which were created by my colleague. This one was initialized with a commit (.gitignore and Readme.md), so I couldn't push directly. Googled a bit, OK then tried to fetch the remote repo, didn't help. Googled again, tried some "git push origin master whatever" stuff and then rebate, because nothing seemed to help.
OOPS where are my local files? WTF? 😣
Long story short: Experience in other version control systems is not enough or even dangerous when switching over to git. 😂4 -
I just released my first NPM package that is actually functional and used in a private project (https://npmjs.com/package/@lbfalvy/...) and I have to say, the quality of debug tooling for Node is abysmal. I spent 4 hours just on Webpack's "Field browser doesn't contain a valid alias configuration" error which simply means "package not found", and then getting Rollup to output a working compiled javascript _and_ a d.ts was its own day-long ordeal.4

From perfectly working scrum team to... Don't know what it is now...
Long story short - our SM left company and our team have ongoing "reorganization", our tester leaving at the end of this month, probably we will be out of tester for next month...
I don't mean reorganization, it's normal thing, but... It looks like it's slowly collapsing under bad head decisions (one of them is the reason why our tester is leaving)... Multiple "side" projects / tasks for ppl in team and problems with delivering sprint tasks on time because of it, context switching etc.
I fucking like this project, it gives me much opportunities to learn new things and design new features - it's up to us how we will implement it. Client is satisfied with our work and we worked for their trust for long time. But if things will be going same way as now, we will probably lose it.
How do you think, is it worth to try stay with this project? Or should I update CV just in case?6 -

We estimated out how long a new project was gonna take using story points. It wasn't too big and the estimate came out to two months. We discussed it and it seemed to be all good.
Later on someone pointed out a Quora question where my boss asked why it would take so long to develop such a project.
My boss trusts people on Quora more than his own employees.2 -

Just got intern to “help me” on project. Told him to install nodeJs and run ‘npm install’ inside project folder that he pulled from git.
He ended up running ‘npm install’ inside C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs

What I’ve been doing is I’ve found a open source project on github and downloaded it , loaded it up and read through some code, from memory the project is called ‘keepass’ and its written in c++!.
I’d love to get some advice from you guys, how do i go about learning and understanding open source code :-)? What is some advice you can give to me? Anyways I’d be very grateful for any piece of advice :D once again as always hope everyone has an amazing Sunday night and long weekend, wherever you may be!.

so for the past yr i have been unofficially a lead on a project, i wasnt officially a lead but i was the one in control of everything in it and got to do decisions.
the project itself was horrible, and i was the only one who delved into it and understood it thats why everyone relied on me i guess.
recently PMs took charge of it after i told them i want to do something else. now they are bossing the hell out of me to finish their new stuff in that project. Now i hate every second of my job.
i regret telling them i am unhappy with the project because at least i was the only one responsible for it. maybe long term that would have been a good reason to be promoted. but now they took charge so im afraid i wont get promoted anytime soon.

TL;DR The "senior dev", that the client hired on their end, is acting as a middleman between me and the project requestors. Taking the credit for my work.
I've already bitch about this before. I've been in a crusade to defend the production server from this fraud for a long time now.
But most recently he has removed me from all meetings with the actual project owner. I create the solutions, then he goes through them to understand it a bit. He proceeds to present it to the project owner in a way that almost blatantly says that he made it.
I'm sick and tired of working with this asshole. He is literally useless, worse he is slowing things down and breaking others.

How do you deal with a boss that is not very intelligent, but fights you, your team, executive management and project stakeholders on critical system design decisions?
Everyone else is worn out, the project is long overdue and I'm running out of energy, myself. Do I just do what everyone else does and let him have his way and prepare myself to deal with the imminent problems ahead, or do I keep fighting for a well designed system that customers will enjoy using?6 -

I don't understand windows 10 "Quick Access" (when you open windows file manager). I open One very less used folder and it stays in quick access for approx. 10 days and I open my Project folder everyday, every hour, evry minute and every second, it doesn't shows up in quick access, and when sometimes does, it doesn't stays long.9

So last year I started a project, and gave up after 8 months (was an unemployed student, and made my todo list wayyy too long)
Turns out, over those 8 months I wrote over 13.5k lines of coding/ styling, while also spending a couple months revising for, and taking my GCSE exams where I didnt do any programming.
Somehow I was averaging around 2k lines a month and I wish I had that productivity still.3 -
Manager asked me to create a spreadsheet showing tasks in a project with percentage complete to send to client.
Sounds easy, even though I prefer JIRA, I created spreadsheet with all tasks and asked each developer responsible to fill in percentage done.
But I did it completely wrong. I have to give estimate for how long it took for each task and make sure total complete is 70 percent and number of days add up to 10. WTF guess the estimate to match the total. And this is how you teach me project management.
Did I mention that all this is happening after most of the project is done?1 -

My last big project at school.
There was some pretty interesting projects, some shitty one, but there was one big project that interested almost everyone : a project in collaboration with Siemens. The project implied Machine Learning and Image Analysis. There were like 11 applies, with a total of 13-14 groups.
The project was randomly chosen for each group. I've learned that my project was the big one with Siemens. I remember how excited and hyped I was in a quarter of second.
So the whole project was tutored by one teacher that know us pretty well (since we already did a pretty cool project last year tutored by him) and by a former student at my school who's now at Siemens. And to be honest, it was one of the coolest project I've been into, despite the difficulty, since the whole subject (not gonna tell it just in case) was pretty new. We had some troubles, but we and our tutors always had discussion every week that helped us quite a lot.
There was some development planned at first, but the more we went into the project, the more we all saw the complexity of it and didn't quite hope to do a single line of code, but mostly research.
The project took around 3-4 months, we had a room that we can use with a GTX 1070 for training the neural network, and me and my friend knew how to work perfectly and efficiently.
At the end of the project, as expected we didn't do some coding, but we did a presentation of the project, with the big help of our tutor at Siemens that told us to redo from scratch our part in a more scientific way; the presentation was a real success, we got all the jury saying they actually wanted those kind of presentation and were really pleased. And we provided everything needed so a new fresh group with no knowledge of the topic could do some coding on it.
We got one of the highest notes of the promotion (not sure if the highest or not). Even tho it kinda disgusted me in researching, that actually was one of the best project I got to do that was that successful.1 -
Is 'long term thinking' a forbidden thing??
I: if we use Chef to deploy our project to the different servers, we can save a lot of time and hassle (also for the server people)

Yes, it takes some more time initially but it pays back in the long run especially because now we have a terrible mess of server environments..3 -

Switching to Java after several years of c# experience(new project)... and it feels like lobotomy has been performed on both the language/machine and my part - no var keyword(yet), horrible work with the collections (but thank god we have at least the streams), basic things like Long are actual objects(not a value type), strings must be compared with .equals ... and suddenly even simple tasks take me horrendous amount of time.9

I'm contributing to a project that allows you to control your Linux desktop from your phone. I managed to implement controlling your PCs volume form the phone. At first the code was ugly as hell, include a fucking long bash statement, but I even managed to turn it into a nice solution.

got two client who have an idea and walk up to us saying we should do whats best for the idea, We took up the project came up with the features and all specifics including deadline and client was ok, later on client says some things dont makes sense and reshaped idea, since we greatly want to increase our custumer base we took the change and of course deadline is altered later on client says the project Is taking long and insist that their change couldn't have caused the change in deadline. Weekend Project-A-thon
over a decade ago, I created a very simple php script, but because I was new to php, it took 2 months to code
I eventually sold half my interest in the business, and it was updated, upgraded, etc.
But now I have to clone it. And I have a weekend to do it. I've come a long way with my coding skills. I think it's possible.

This was a project for school, we had to simulate an app that traced bus routes over a map.
All the teams but mine do it in Java (desktop app), we took another approach and did it on Android with the Maps API.
I had fun coding a parser, this parser job was to read a file and load the bus routes and draw them on the map.
It was structured like:

The fun part was coding and telling my teammates "chill out, it will work", so we finished, built and run and... done! First code working smooth AF.
I know it's a simple parser and a simple app, but it was a nice feeling not having to debug the app.1 -

This was a few years ago in my 2nd year of college. my very first foray into web dev for a team project. long story short, I wrote over 16,000 lines of code. teammate #2 wrote barely 1,000 lines. teammate #3 wrote around 250 lines, around 200 of which I had to rewrite anyway because it was such complete trash. and yet, still, it was this class that showed me I wanted to go into web dev. I'm about to start learning Android development. First it's the obligatory Get Started, then a couple of Udemy courses. After doing javascript for so long, i think it'll be nice to use a strongly typed language again (Java is my first language; college you know).
But, I'm REALLY not looking forward to Gradle wasting my time--it took two minutes to even start up the IDE for the initial project.

I took a project. Wild mix of php and html including db stuff and data processing. About 200 files, some 3000+ lines long with if else cases processed in another template/logic behemoth...
I wrote a js file included it at the footer of the monster and update dom + data via ajax on my own api implementation because I'm too afraid to write in any of those files.

Estimate how long it will take you then double it. After that split the project into milestones and add the days you give a client to accept the milestone. If you have a good client you will get done early and refund them the difference. Otherwise you get paid well for dealing with a dumbass.

Started adding new MVC project to main solution at work. Started getting assembly reference errors across the projects during testing. Figured I might as while update the few assemblies that are complaining instead of trying to downgrade to maintain the current state of things. Shouldn't take too long right?....8 hours of staring at configs and running and rerunning nuget commands to get all the versions lined up across 120 projects....thank God we have extensive unit and integration tests...

I'm currently working on a project in my spare time for which I haven't yet written much “real” code; it primarily consists of nothing other than extremely bare-bones pseudocode (hell, one of the lines literally reads “DO SOMETHING WITH THE API”), and it's already at a length of over 6KB. I need some help speccing a server.
We have 5 video editors/ 3D animators, who’s currently working on their own machine and keeping a version on their machine.
I want a server that allows 5 people to work on it simultaneously. Preferably a few SSDs for the current project, then 50 TB++ of long storage. What raid should I use, how much ram, cpu, what system should I run, etc etc2 -
So.. currently working on updating some hybrid mobile apps. Major updates, so requires drastic measures..
anyway, over in my Nx workspace now, I generate a new Angular app, add Capacitor and generate a new Android project.
Then when I open my new project in Android Studio, it recommends updating AGP from 8.0.0 to 8.1.1.
Waiting for the new packages to download, AS shows an orange warning message popup that reads "sync is taking an unusually long time", or something like that.

These past few days were the first days in ages that I actually had time to work on a project. It is also the first time in ages that I pulled all nighters to code. We got an end of year project in comp sci at school and we got a lot of freedom for what we were required to do so I got the idea of creating bank management software cause it seemed pretty simple. But then I started the project and realized how much more I could do with this. So I've been working on an entire bank management program including account creation, database creation, file encryption, payment options, and credit/debit card attaching. It is currently text based but I'd like to create a gui in the time we have left to finish. I'd also like to incorporate more features that come to mind. -
Took me way too long to realise what the (annoyingly simple) solution to the problem I was having was.
This is the problem with derailed projects that just feels never ending, you get stupid after a while.
God I hope I can finish this shit up this weekend. I'm so done with this project. -

Today I escape from the clutches of the legacy iOS project ive been stuck in for about a year and a half.
Starting on a new team, totally different stack (TypeScript/Angular).
Its bad that what makes me happiest is that we have unit tests, something thats been missing from my life for so long now. I might actually get to do TDD now.

Yesterday at midnight, I discovered why the Appveyor CI system for my project was failing sometimes for over three months.
If the commit message was only one line long, the environment variable holding the rest of them did not exist, and the function returned null.
One of the few times I don't say "The hell had I written!" when I discover a bug. -
We got an email today which stated that if the government closes schools, everyone has to work from home. Well, it just do happens that from midnight this will be the case. This is going to be funny, my computer is unbelievably crappy and it will barely be able to run the project itself, let alone Webstorm & Co. But at least I can sleep as long as I want!4

I choose to go with Angular 1.x because I'm lile "hey i know that already", but there's one teensie problem--it hit me that i haven't looked at Angular so long that I have no fucking clue how to start up an Angular project from scratch properly. I'm currently working on a dynamics CRM project which has been going on for almost a year, we're on week 19 of defect rectification brought on by a mixture of the clients abysmal testing and spec writing and the pain of debugging in Dynamics.
This project has left me emotionally and physically drained. I used to love where I worked and the guys I worked with but right now I'm the lowest I've felt in a long time.
I have autism and I really struggle with situations I have little control over, I also pride myself on being able to diagnose and fix problems quickly, I've been working on the same 2 bugs for the last 3 week's. I squashed one on Friday but this other one is persistent and I feel like it's killing me.
I've mentioned my low mood to my boss who could only say "It will be over soon". Well I was supposed to be transferred to a new none dynamics project in September, but yeah that didn't happen.
I really enjoy Angular and I've found this long project has caused my skills in it to rust to the point where even the most basic elements are a struggle.
I hate Dynamics and I hate the prospect of going in tomorrow and facing it again. -

I'm trying to put together a decent graduate CV and the non-tech people around me insist that I should put "the research projects I spend so much time on" on it, but I'm pretty sure that as long as there's a Github link the rows full of jargon combined with meaningless names that would be a project list do more harm than good.3

Despite not having any real C# experience to speak of, I've been put on a short and rather intense enhancement project that was written with .net framework and MVC.
Yesterday I had to add a new method to call a stored procedure. The file I had to add it in was over 6k lines long. Most files, not including entities, are well over 1k - including the views.
Can't say I'm enjoying working on this project so far.

I was given a project to fix and improve a legacy unity VR project I was told was for the oculus rift Now the problems started almost immediately partly stemming from the fact I’ve never used unity before this project was handed to me as my long term TA assignment
And partly from the fact there was no oculus integration in the game at all. it was built for GoogleVr and most of the code the last person wrote consisted of massive sections (25-50 lines) of commented out code and no explanation of what the hell the non-commented parts are supposed to be doing
So long story short. I’m now in a basic unity course, six feet deep in documentation trying to read resources that go way over my head in understanding, and am rebuilding the project from basically scratch (took the assets and saved the c# scripts for reference) and have finally figured out how to at least get the player character constantly moving forward and stream in the WRLD3D environment like the last guy did. Now to get the player character to turn and change direction when the player turns their head with the oculus headset
By the way. WRLD3D is a really cool api thing in my opinion -

Working on a C# project that took ages (to the point it burnt me out) not long after dealing with a relatively simple static site project that ended up incomplete because one of the team members couldn't be arsed in providing the info needed.

Worked late on a project... Pretty much falling asleep while coding. Go to bed.
5 hours later, awake but still tired. Want to get back on project, but don't want to miss out on some more rest for this long Friday...

So a new project was assigned to me with Laravel. I don't know abcd of this But have to do within strict deadlines :(
Very much hectic weeks for me... waking up long nights,,,, working on weekends..
Hope so will soon grab on it and will complete task in less time.
Now am thinking does being developer is ok for long term. :( Sometime it really become very very hectic.. And How can I take less stress about the pending tasks.. I mean if something got stuck .. my mind will stay there until I finished/solved that off :(
Any advicess from those are in long run being dev2 -
Right. My next project from now is to create a copy of the bc command. It'll be long. It'll be hard. But that's the end of the harder part! 💪

I once blew up my git project by doing a find and replace string thru the command line. Long story short don't ever do it.

Not for too long, really. Around 12-13h in the office and next 4-5h for my personal project. For a week. Then I stopped crunching and went back to 7-8h in the office and 6-7h of personal project.

It's been over 7 months of being deployed to help finish a project that's crossed the deadline umpteenth times. There's only this guy who had started on this project and me as developers. He's a nice guy, but I'm finding him to be a snowflake that's extremely difficult to work with. Every time I mention a critical problem with his original design, or the approaches he takes on this project, he takes it personally. He would pour out a long spiel of why this and why that, and waste most of the meeting time. Or he would run to his outdated diagrams or documents that he had created himself somewhere deep in the wiki forest, and use that as a defense. He creates his own user stories and tasks on a whim with no PM supervision. I've noted to the managers that this is a project to fail, and all they've done is assign a busy PM to this project, and the new PM is perfectly fine w/ the way the project has been handled so far.
I point out a small flaw with his assumptions just the other day, and he even managed to hyperventilate and again fall back to his outdated document... WTF? I'd rather start from scratch and get this project finished faster.. and even though I've expressed my objection to continue on this path, the managers foolishly believe that this project will be completed somehow. I don't hate my development partner, or PM, or people in the management, but I hate the fact that I don't have control over so many aspects of this project, including the half-assed, unnecessarily complex design, and the dev workflow itself. I feel like I'm tied to a car that's being thrown over the cliff, and assigned to fix the junky car w/ its engine broken before the car hits the ground. Something like this would never be allowed to go in a commercial sector. I just wish that the management could just give me control over project as THE lead & PM over this project, and get this project tied up for good, and with better reusability and quality.1 -
I am doing some late night developing because I feel excited about my own project after a long slog of refactoring and ground work... and my IDE is getting weird leading to long compilation times :(

Last week we commenced a programming project on a machine that was being built for a customer with a view to them coming to test machine in 8 working days, we spent 2.5 days re wiring due to bad electrical design, a further two days changing mechanical design, and I have had half a day coding. We now have three days before customer comes and about three weeks work to do. Might be some long days3

Update of previous post
I just got assigned to a project.
Project-specific training is designed to take up to 20 days.
I got materials, videos, and a person who is in this project for a long time to supervise training and introduce me to the project.
Only problem is that the project apparently uses 5 years old version of base framework. -
So I'm kind of stuck this semester in my third computer science degree year.
Most subjects could have been interesting but 4 out of 5 teachers suck... I was thinking how to get motivation and dev rant is the place! I'm enjoying this place.
I'm doing my last year in California and want to get involved in a programming project or something. Could anyone recommend me a place or something?
