Hey everyone! As some of you have already noticed, @trogus and I made a decision (based on the suggestion of some members of the community) to start transitioning all scores on the app to binary. We have started by making all user scores in our mobile apps and website (if you’re logged in) appear in binary. We think this makes the app more fun while remaining usable at the same time!

was at a hackathon, had to write an app that sent current location to emergency contact. hard coded the location of where the hackathon was taking place and one of the members phone numbers. we came second14

Lost my iPhone last night😭 - looked all over but no luck - last chance the gas station - called and the owner said he found a phone with devRant sticker on the back. I still was not sure as lots of devRant members in NY but yes it turned out to be mine. Nice!
And the best news is the gas station owner told his dev son about devRant! So my temporary loss may change his sons life. Sometimes things are just meant to be. 😀12 -
In my company we developped a tool where we enter the average salary of all members of the meeting and then let a timer run which would show how much money the company spent on that specific meeting.
Needless to say that meetings were way shorter after that12 -

I just finished my thesis defense, one of the committee members obliterated me with incredibly difficult questions but it was so much fun to respond to this 40min smackdown after presenting all my work in 50 minutes. The battle has been won ladies and gentlemen, I am incredibly happy.13

Hey everyone - earlier tonight a surprise change in the Apple subscription API response caused devRant++ members on iOS to temporarily lose their supporter status. All should be restored now, and within the next day supporter start date for all community members in this group will be reset back to the correct start time.
We appreciate all of your support very much and apologize for this issue - I have to do some investigation into how this change happened and if there was any warning.

My first job out of college I worked in the professional services of a dotcom. My company was a subcontractor to a major consultancy, so we worked alongside their engineers. There was one guy that only ever named his variables three letter initials of family members. If you tried changing the code he reverted them back. If that's not weird I don't know what is.2

Refactored a legacy source file and reduced it from 2.8k lines to 300 lines.
Mixed feelings: happy that it is much simpler now and sad that my current project team members never go back to delete unused code.

I didn't know any one of them, we just meet at the TADHack last week end. Because my team members apologies at the last moment, I joined one of them who forgot his laptop. The third came after five minutes asking "can I join"?
We established a team from three different backgrounds, and started the work. Each one built what he know, and we integrated all of it together.
Luckily, we won.... I enjoyed these weekend...5 -

Management and I both know team members are junior/early-medium levels.
Management expects outcome.
After few weeks I clearly communicated that these engineers are unreliable. I can grow and coach them, but outcomes can't be guaranteed.
I was told it's my responsibility to deliver outcome anyway.
I was told they know it's unfair - but if whole team fails, it's on me to fix everything.
And most importantly: of course IT IS NOT MANAGEMENT FAULT OF ASSEMBLING TEAM OF WEAK ENGINEERS.

My gym decided to adopt a fitness app so members could sign up for classes. Their onboarding was terrible (to be nice about it). I really hate when businesses don’t understand the technology they want to use.
Me: I downloaded the app, but all the classes say to call the gym.

How did it never occur to you that gym members might already have accounts for a fitness app that’s been around for years and used by other businesses? Besides, this app doesn’t let users delete accounts from the app so I don’t know where you’re coming from with telling me to delete my account. -
So how do you deal with the "brilliant jerk" who is the CEO's golden chlid?
Seriously - this is one of the biggest challenges of my professional career. I have team members that have begged to not be on projects with him and others that have threatened to quit if he ever moves into a leadership role.

Working on Python+Flask delpoyed on bluemix. The app failed to start. After 4 hours of debugging by all the 4 members of thr team, we together found that there was a tab in an otherwise space intended file, which was tripping bluemix.

To any and all family members, before requesting my help with the printer/computer/electronic device follow these steps to make sure I don't get irritated.
1. Make sure it's plugged in.
2. Turn it off then back on
3. Turn it off, unplug it for around 30s, turn it back on.

Two of my team members were trying to make a website responsive for over an hour. They tested everything. They checked the JavaScript, checked their CSS media queries, tried everything but it just wouldn't work on mobile browsers.
So as usual they decided it was "impossible" due to "WordPress constraints" and told me that it would work on the browser but not desktop.
I just added the meta viewport tag. It literally took 10 seconds. It worked.
I hate people who give up easily. Just hate it.2 -

Major state insurance provider, all past and current members data stored unencrypted (including SSN, date of birth, home address, etc.). All developers and contract developers had read access to it. Reported it, nothing was done. Reported it again in my exit interview. Was basically told they had intrusion detection systems in place so it was not an issue.4

Now I can finally say that Linux is the best os I've ever used.

Now both guys are total noobs and have never used a computer before.

Some days I feel like I really know what I am doing and today was not one of these days...
Working on a game engine using Vala and now using Raylib in the backend for rendering and input.
Wrote a VAPI for Raylib and when I was doing the 'Rectangle' struct... I made it's members integers when they are floats...
So this whole time; when using a camera everything would jitter like crazy.... because I was taking the transform which is all floats... rounding it then casting to an int only for the int to be cast into a float again....
Lo and behold; changing the members to floats and removing the rounding and casting makes everything silky smooth...
I have been debugging every bit of my current render loop trying to work this out when it was 100% unrelated.... I hate myself sometimes1 -

Literally swear I despise flash. So, had a small job to update a page that consisted of a list of members, clicking on a members name will populate an adjacent div with 3 or 4 contact names. Simple stuff on the face of it.
However, it turned out the previous developer had decided to use flash for this, meaning there is a horrible .swf plonked into the page.

Last week I got told by an incoming CTO, a week old to the organisation, that I'm good for nothing and unable to produce any work. He told me that he'll replace me and put me in a team where I'm more resourceful as I have been consistently underperforming. (He doesn't understand data science yet fyi) Then, he informed he's hiring 5 new teams members.
Me (junior data scientist) being really passionate about work was shook to hear this. So much so that it took me a week to even recover from it. I have considered counselling sessions too.
Week later, 5 new team members decide to flip his offer and not join. Another existing senior member decides to leave as well. Meanwhile, major issues in existing systems emerge and only I could solve the same. Still haven't heard back any from him though.
Is this the industry standard though ? Is this how CTOs normally function ? Throwing shit at people without knowing their value or valuing their efforts ? Especially with junior developers. It's only been 2 years in this profession and I've not met more than 3 genuine and helpful people. Maybe it's just my organization.9 -

Not a rant but as an intern that is older than several of the members of the team I'm assigned to, including my mentor, it was still nice to be complemented on my ability to find workable solutions on my own rather than running for help whenever there is a problem.

I was given a project to lead and develop with 2 other team members by the co-founder, I was told that I will need to deliver an initial demo within 30 days, 20 days in the project and I was told yesterday that they need a final release ready within the next 10 days !! Not just that but the co founder decided to assign one of my team members to another project!!!

When you move your card into the Review column, set the assignee to `unassigned` so that people know to pick it up. It's so much easier to understand the state of it !

Windows, the operating system which is so much more user-friendly than Linux, or so they say, cannot be operated by my family members without constant support helping them to find files they downloaded and want to send in an email for example. So I have to stretch my mind between my family's non-tech end-user perspective and Microsoft's Windows 11 UI, both of which deviate from my developer's perspective, each in its own surprising way.5

As always with group projects, one or two people barely do anything and end up getting a passing grade because 1-3 r group members do all the heavy lifting.
Why do they always get away with this? From the two persons that profit from other peoples work in my current project, at least one is trying to make up for it now.
You would hope at least some of the useless group members would have washed out by the end of second year because of tests, but no.

I have a question on the Signal app.
Two family members have an extensive chat history. One of them accidentally deleted the data. The backup function was not active. However, the other side still has all the data. Both are using Android smartphones.
How to transfer the data? Re-sending works only five messages at a time, which is not practical with some thousand messages.
Is it possible to export the data from one smartphone e.g. via USB to a PC, then import that via USB on the other?12 -

So here's a random idea: DDoS defence swarm.
Install the daemon on your server, and every time your server gets DDoS'd, all members of the swarm will mobilise to defend you, but the catch is that your server will have to help other members of the swarm too.
The defensive technique in question can be one of many:
1. Automated IP blocking/reporting with a blacklist in distributed form.
2. Other swarm members counterattack and cooperatively DDoS the offending addresses.
3. Flood the ISP with automated emails to force them to pay attention to the problem.
...or a combination of all of the above.
The only issue I can see with this is abuse potential. A clever person can trick the swarm into DDoSing innocents.15 -

A really sad story of my cousin's carrier,
My cousin was a smarter guy in math during school grades but there comes his devil aunt and uncle during his high grades forcing him and his family members to go for biology in high school. They just want to use my cousin for their benefit, as they own many medical stores in the town they can use my cousin in future in their field. The uncle reached the school's principal and confirmed his admission in biology giving bribe.
Here where my cousin's carrier starts to demolish, as he was interested in math but he was forcefully admitted in biology class.
It was all ok till high school but further the uncle fought with family members misguiding them and took cousin's admission in pharmacy discipline in a university offering bribe. Here the min problems starts, As he is not interested in pharmacy he is failing in the exams and now he is under a great depression.
PS : The uncle ruined whole carrier of my cousin just for his future monetary benefits.12 -

My company boss wants to reorganise the team structures drastically.
Currently we have different teams for each product. And in that team we have a lead, frontend and backend developers working in sync.
The boss wants to split the teams not based on product.. but based on technology / frontend backend. Then assign the members to products based on demand.

Product was not thrilled with our estimates we gave them for the next phase of our project. So they got the veep to give us 2 new team members - a new hire and an existing senior - in hopes that it will allow us to finish a lot sooner.

Tested a script that watches a folder for any missing folders (team members kept moving them), and then showed it to the guy who was mentoring me. It did what it needed to, so we were going to switch it off the test directory on the local box to the network share.

There is a difference between HR and CHRO, senior marketing expert and CMO, senior developer and CTO.
There is a work ethic stance of always staying in your scope and saying "that's not my job" to any extra stuff someone asks you to do. This is acceptable and perfectly normal. Any team member has a contract, and you owe your company nothing beyond that.
That stance is however only acceptable from regular workers, not a chief board members. For any acronym position that starts with a capital letter C, that stance is not acceptable anymore. That's the difference.
Board members should have a share. Board members should have the right to dictate how a company is, at least proportional to their share or more.
Only those who display T-shaped skills, ownership and interest in the whole business model, not just their scope, are eligible to graduate up to a chief position. If you're not a chief officer, but you want to get there, this is what you do. Analyze the business as a whole and come up with measurable and provable ways of making it better, because this can't be formalized, and thus can't be a part of your contract. This is the surest way to the top.
I am of course speaking of the companies where the main priority is the business and its ethics and not the founder's ego. The latter can't be saved.4 -

Service based companies and Nepotism
In India, most IT companies hires their own family members. Even they promote their own family members. One of the my friend worked as dev he found that mostly his co workers are relatives of founder or managers. He told me that he understand if they get hired from some kind of references but that's not case here. Even HR is also family member of manager/founder. Most of this guys don't know any language. Even they don't have any kind of professionalism
Imagine that working on companies where your co-workers and HR is family members of managers and founder. Where you find help because everyone will against you because all are family members.
they deduct PF of workers who are not relatives and never pay tax to goverment. In india, most developers are desperate to get job because that's what education system and society taught them.

Products are being given to the clients with lots of bugs. Management's response: double the QA team size... We almost have more QA members than Dev members. FFS.

I am a junior / new grad and I am working at my first job out of school. The software team is very small (around 5 people) and we maintain a very large project. Since the project is so large, each member of the team is responsible for a specific part of the project.
Other members on the team work on embedded and low level programming. I am responsible for only the web interface to the project.
I recently just figured a solution for a problem that I had been exclusively working on for almost 2 months.
I tried asking for help from other members of my team when I was working in this problem. However, most of them told me that they do not have the time to become familiar with the my codebase inorder to help.
As a junior, what am I supposed to do in this situation? I know I could’ve asked a question on stackoverflow but I thought that if members of my team helped me, it’d be a beneficial mentorship experience.

I was in a meeting the other day which started with a introducing of the members and a basic explanation about scrum.
The meeting ended with the note form the client that the project was absolutely not allowed to cost more then X.
After the meeting a coworker asked who explained scrum to the client. And it was explained twice by two different people. -
Digital transformation is pain in the ass, my customer migrated project management from self hosted jira to atlassian cloud.
Results:
I am finally able to login to this new amazing jira that looks completely different but still nothing is optimized to laptop screen so looks crap as before.
My issues are now assigned to not existing user.
At least I remember how to use basic JQL and reassign issues to me.
I feel bad to other team members.

TL;DR, which is the best JS templating library?
I've been using React for a while since I like the library's ideology and how simple designing templates is. But for the sake of future technologies, I've been wondering if I could get out of React and start coding with native JS.
The only problem is constructing the DOM, which gets super ugly with vanillaJS. So, I want to ask the experienced members of devRant which library would best suit my use case.6 -

In one of my previous projects, most of the team members were pranksters. One time a team member who had newly joined the project left his laptop unlocked while going to the restroom. The others drafted a fake resignation letter from his laptop and emailed it to our entire team. And when he returned, we all spent the next ten to fifteen minutes nagging him to explain why he took such a "drastic step", before finally explaining everything to him.

I've been a freelance for almost 20 years, so I had the ability to choose my tech and architecture. Now that I'm leading a team, I'm finally needing to fight with other developers to convince them to actually use what was the scientific state of the art 20 years ago, because our field is so disconnected from science and good practices…
The upside is that I get to teach that state of the art to my team members.
I'll see in a year if it's more thrilling or tiring. -

Let' s say I have a sensorReading component that looks like these green boxes. I only want 4 of them in app-component(default one). How can I create 4 of these inside app-component and access their properties and methods from app-component.ts script?
I can create 4 of them in app-component.html with ngFor but how can I access elements of these sensorReading components I created with ngFor? Members are sensorType, value and unit as you can see.16 -

Today, I found out that the webmaster for the organization I volunteer at is using a security-by-obscurity PHP implemented design for the private data of our members. I've talked with him about it, but for a variety of reasons to do with organization and workload, it won't be changing.

Working on a CS370 (Software Engineering) project with 5 people; 2 of which feel like their time is more important than everyone else's so when we all meet as a group to go over presentations, documentation and other things we need to do as a group, they silently sit alone working on bits of code they should have done previously. Then when we can't get docs done and handed in on time, one of the two decides to spam our group chat at 2am when 2 of us are sleeping because we work in the morning, one of us is sleeping because of morning classes and the last one is doing god knows what. Like, I'm sorry. But failure to do your shit on time does not constitute an emergency on my shit. All of our weekly peer reviews reflect on how no matter what we say to these two; they refuse to work as a team.

In a team, your time is not more important than team time. You can do things on your time whenever you want; but unless your entire team shares your schedule, team time might be a rare commodity and should be used as such. -
I work in an agile environment and I act as scrum master. There is one team member I have been trying to get on the rails for two years now. Today she went off at standup and one other team member commented it was like listening to a diary entry. It’s true. I’ve been to agile open hours with this problem so many times- glad we are only in the office two days so I can mute myself and react. Anyone else have team members taking standup meetings hostage? I just want to scream !!!2

Working on a project (auction website) with a group, one of them described himself as an experienced web developer (both front and back end). Two weeks into the project, he won't shut up about using Bootstrap and how great it is (even tho we decided on not using it); fucks up even the simplest queries and doesn't know any OOPHP. Needless to say, he got kicked pretty soon and after making some nonsensical threats to the group members we never heard of him again. Or so we hope.5

Which platform do you recommend for inter-team comm?
We were on skype, but it didn't allow threads.
We have now shifted to Microsoft Teams but some members aren't liking it because it does not have a native App for Linux.
Slack is paid, and we're already paying Microsoft for other features.
There are open source alternatives but we don't have a spare machine to host on...

If a supervisor conducts an informational conference call that’s on a set schedule, mainly consisting of members from their management team, they should avoid conducting the kindergarten style roll call start off. Especially, if the call consists of 20 or more people.
10+ minute roll calls are horrible to have to sit through, not to mention borderline degrading if the team members involved are management or supervisors. -
