Just had meeting with a potential client.
They wanted to move their existing website from the internet to the cloud 😲. I left so quick I forgot to take my business card back.14 -
My employer bought some new 40" 4k displays to the office. The want us to evaluate if they are any good, and if so replace all monitors... No real developers has one, only HR people sitting there with one huge window with office or word open!! It makes me cry! And they will most likely say they are too big!
When everyone left the office I tried one... OMG, i need this in my life! 😍50 -
Agency: " Sir, we found 3 candidates as per your requirements, now how do you want their placements sir?"
M.D: "Put about 100 bricks in a closed room. Then send the candidates into the room & close the door, leave them alone & come back after a few hours and analyse the situation:-
1) If they are counting the bricks, Put them in Accounts deptt.
2) If they are re-counting the bricks, Put them in Auditing.
3) If they have messed up the whole room with the bricks, Put them in Engineering.
4) If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, Put them in Planning.
5) If they are throwing the bricks at each other, Put them in Operations.
6) If they are sleeping, Put them in Security.
7) If they have broken the bricks into pieces, Put them in Information Technology.
8) If they are sitting idle, Put them in Human Resources.
9) If they say they have tried different combinations yet not a single brick has been moved, Put them in Sales.
10) If they have already left for the day, Put them in Marketing.
11) If they are staring out of the window, Put them in Strategic Planning.
And.......
12) If they are talking to each other and not a single brick has been touched, Congratulate them and put them in Top Management.

Shit... I just got my phone stolen. Realized it 40 seconds post factum [left it at the shop counter and someone took it].
20 minutes later called the police [cuz I had to get home and use wife's phone].
5 min later poluce arrived
10 min later they got all they could from shop's security officer.
Police officer asks me to login my samsung acc on his phone. 2 minutes later we are on the way to the exact location my phone is at.
15 minutes later officer hands me my samsung 😁
got my phone back in less than an hour after theft.
maybe... Ummm... Maybe all this tracking thing is not that bad...?13 -
The Perfect Storm:
My worst coding mistake? Yeah, let me tell you about that. I pushed a simple JavaScript/HTML change without knowing that the stupid header was shared with another "not so important" section of the site called "My Account" where people go to pay for their services. I call it the perfect storm because I left early that Friday for a weekend cruise and right before leaving I pushed the change, sent the request to push for production and left. When they noticed that clients were complaining about not being able to pay they started reversing most changes of all teams trying to fix it but they never touched mine because they knew I wasn't working on the backend. My whole team worked over the weekend trying to find the issue while I was having fun in the cruise. They ended up reversing all changes by Sunday night and it took us about 4 more days to figure out that my simple JavaScript/HTML change broke the site and prevented 30 million customers from making payments that weekend plus it broke the whole 2nd release of the month.... yeah, nothing major.21 -
This is an old rant from over 10 years ago in my first job at 19. I was tasked with turning off one of our clients email because they had left the company. Easy enough, logged into cPanel, job done. Later that day I get a phone call from the clients company asking if there was a problem with the email. No I said, everything should be fine, I did remove a 'joe.bloggs@blah.com' email address as instructed because... *reading job bag*... they had left the company. The client then said, that's my email you've turned off and hung up. Turned out he had been fired and no one told him. I felt horrible. I will always remember that conversation 😓8

Got into the monday tech meeting, CTO be like: we lost 10% of users due to last version, terrible I know, but that's really valuable data, I want you to find out why they left.3
-
Got laid off my by old employer back in 2019 because they have their priorities completely wrong.
Got a mail today whether I could fix something for them (ofc, they wanted me to do it essentially for free).
One of the websites I built for a customer back when I still worked there had a massive bug (that I was aware off and patched in later versions of the library causing it).
They never updated it so, I told them "just update the library".
Apparently, the idiot that was in charge of maintaining said site after I left didn't know how to and completely broke everything.
The hilarious part: While I setup everything using stuff like Docker and Git to make rollbacks easy...
That idiot went back to FTP and manually upgrading the databases through PhpMyAdmin :^)
He nuked the entire site.
Database? Gone.
Codebase? Borked (installed a version with a lot of breaking changes without properly reading the migration guide).
And knowing that shit company, they don't have any backups either.
They said "I wasn't needed because we have other good devs" when they laid me off.
Uhu, I can eh... see those good devs doing their job :^)51 -
I was an Android developer in a company, I was told to generate a release APK file to test it locally.
So, to sign the apk, I created a keystore file and the password is my name. they decided to publish the file on Play Store.
I left the company years ago, and still on every update they have to put my name as a password.5 -
I accidently left log.debug("bollocks") ;
In an exception handler our customers log monitoring system picked it up and they questioned why and I quote here "why is there a spike in bollocks at 3am?"
That was an awkward conference call2 -
I left the military to become a dev. With no degree and no professional experience. It's safe to say they thought I was crazy. But now it's safe to say they are proud of me.18
-
They had a copy of the repository inside a development folder, on the repository.
I left on week 2.3 -
Millennials are getting right f*cked.
Low paying jobs,
Many hours of travel to work because one can't afford to live closeby,
working 10 hour a day, and
there is no hope of owning a home.
Then people say 'oh what do you do when you get home?'
Sleeeep for the limited hours left!
Then your partner says 'oh you just come home to sleep'
Then you have instagram and all these 'influencers' saying go after your dreams... while they very well know they only get paid for heavily edited images.
Wish things were better for everyone.25 -
After 10 months of development we bring the first prototype of our awesome new product to show it to the board of directors. Whereupon the chairman of the board angrily shouts at us "has nobody told you we cancelled this project a month ago?!"
I left two months later, they went bankrupt a year later.4 -
After 2 years of working as a Linux admin, and over 6 years of using Linux as my only OS, I left my job, installed Windows and started a new, better paying and more perspective carrier as a .Net developer ... It's been 6 months, and I still miss the terminal ... I've been trying to get over it by using Babun and the Linux subsystem for Windows ... The thing is ... even though they are great, they are not as good as native stuff and the knowledge that it's not the real deal still haunts me :(
TL;DR: Left Linux 6 months ago ... still miss it to this day ... doubt I will ever get over it :( Feels bad guys22 -
So, I was out cruising in my sports car the other day. Porsche, two seater, about 400 hp.
When I stopped at a red light I was next to a man driving his family of four in his Volkswagen. I revved my car to show my power, but he seemed unfazed by my superior engine. When the light became green I floored it, he didn't have a chance of catching up, I just left him behind and laughed. He's so stupid for driving that slow car.
I can't understand why anyone would ever want to drive a Volkswagen when they are just so obviously slow?
👆This is how you sound like when you compare languages only based on how fast they are.10 -
Idea Guy repellent:
Next time they tell you that they have a billion dollar idea and want you to build it, don't get angry.
Just point them to a code learning website and tell them if their idea is truly worth a billion dollar then they should spend the time learning the tech.
Then laugh as other idea guys come to them with ideas about their billion dollar apps while the rest of us are finally left alone.9 -
I had the dream of working as web designer in Berlin.
You know: techno partys, hedonistic lifestyle and cheap living.
I applied and flew over and got some Interviews.
Arrived at the agency situated in a beautiful broad avenue in a villa at the Olympia Stadion. I was greeted by 2 loud small dogs and nobody else was there. So i waited an half an hour.. and another one...
I notice their company code of conduct nicely framed on the wall. You know what is written on the first place?
"We value peoples time therefore we're punctual."
"We are cosequent"
So after two hours waiting they came. They were pretty stressed out and neded another 45 minutes to get ready to interview me. So they sat at the table telling me excuses. And i pointed at the frame and they suddenly got very bleak in their faces. I stood up and left after 3 hours of waiting. 😆
Sadly no Berlin for me.13 -
I hate people... I hate stupid people even more...
A person asked on slack about where download a Programming Language server called Railo. The official site is no longer up because the software was forked and acquired by a new company.
I suggested just to download that fork since it's more stable. They said no, they needed to mimic their production environment. Makes sense, so I left it alone since I couldn't help further.
Another person on slack asked which version of Railo they need. The OPs response was, "Oh whatever version you have."
My response was... "WTF... the latest version of Railo is 4.3 and the fork is 4.5... the only difference is the new name and a couple of security fixes. If you want to mimic production then you need the exact copy.. otherwise, the fork will be your best bet."
Nope.. I need Railo... any version. They say again. -
My coding-senpai placed this PHP code (before he left) to my org's custom-footer due to a feud that happened months ago
it flooded their cPanel with folders with '.log' as their extension everytime someone visits their website
I LOL'D UNTIL
..They hired me to clean it up :^(
They got over 700,000 of these folders

left a company over 3 years ago because they wanted me to dumb my code down so that the other devs could understand it. they wouldn't allow me to use classes in my code lol. anyway, 3+ years later figured I would try to log in to some of the admin panels... passwords still the same. MySQL dbs... passwords the same... cpanel... passwords the same. smh. even if I still worked there the passwords should be changed every so often. top notch security right there. funniest part is they don't even do backups or use VCS for the code. sad sad company. glad I'm no longer there. my personal projects have more security, redundancy and fail over lol4

My mom has a new IPad.
it took my mother and sister 4 hours to make an apple ID.
I offered to help, but they said they wanted to do it themselves
So, i opened my sister's laptop and opened google, i googled: "How to setup an apple ID". left the laptop near them, and hoped they notice it, and they did.7 -
We had a Christmas Party in our office in December and the office looked fairly trashed in the morning.
I took a photo of a colleagues desk and photoshopped burn marks on it, sending it to our group WhatsApp saying the bosses are furious and whatever they did after I left has left the guys in so much trouble.
It was a horrendous photoshop too, because I had nothing but PowerPoint to use - but everyone still believed it.
Most of the guys had booked that day off to deal with hangovers so it wasn't till the Monday that they realised it wasn't real!4 -
Installing "Hannah Montana Linux" on a co-worker's pc after they left it unlocked and went home for the weekend.5

Accidentally left a test line in an API method - the first line returned a 200 OK response.
It was a notification API for our payment portal, so when they complained our API didn't work our logs always said all was fine...
After an hour of listening to our help desk guys saying "everything in our logs says it's fine", I looked at source for 2 seconds, fixed the problem, went home, had a whiskey and went to bed!1 -
Went to recruit some interns at a CS school in my area. Talked to their teacher in charge of internships and asked her about their students skills in Java. She said they all are very solid in JavaScript. I left immediately.3

I've told this one before, but the guy had his platform bought with a promise of partnership. they kept stalling the contract, and he would repeatedly ask when he was gonna get paid his share, and eventually they said "we never promised that". he deleted everything from the team's computers, revoked all access and left. since there was never a contract, they didn't do anything about it5

A physicist, a mathematician, and a statistician go hunting. They spot a deer, and take aim. The physicist shoots first and misses 10 meters to the right. The mathematician shoots next and misses 10 meters to the left. The statistician then throws down his gun and proclaims, “we got it!”1

At a former job, the company decided to replatform to Salesforce. The entire dev team was laid off. But it would take an outside agency a year to build the Salesforce site. The company wanted the devs to stay for an additional year.
The only severance was something they called a stay bonus. It was 30% of our gross income but it was still contingent on performance. And if they decide to let you go earlier, it gets prorated if you still qualify for the bonus. Not a good deal.
Each month a dev left. By the time I secured a new job and left, all that remained of the dev team was a junior frontend dev and two team leads (one FE and one BE) with no team to lead. Well, there were contractors, but they were only brought on after the Salesforce replatform announcement. I’m pretty sure the company had to hire even more contractors. No idea how much that cost them.
For me, I think it was serendipitous that I gave notice during their busiest time of year. They actually tried asking me to extend my notice. Karma was coming back to bite them. Not just for the Salesforce thing. But also for their lack of support when I was blindly accused of being both insubordinate and incompetent.4 -
It's not a dev quiting but my brother who worked in parcel delivery at that time.
He was hired on a temporary contract but promissed from the beginning and in every discussion they had, that he'll get a permanent position after 6 moth, if his work is good.
Fast forward 6 months. They had a meeting and told him how satisfied they where with his work so naturally he asked about the permanent contract. Fuckers acted suprise and shit. Claiming to never have said any of it. However as they are happy with him and so "generous", they offerd him another contract for 6 months and told him, they could talk about a permanent one after that period.
He kind of has a temprament, so he got up, fliped them the bird and called them lying assholes and went home. He didn't show for the time left on his contract.
The funny thing about it he worked for the swiss postal service (which is owned by the state) but not directly but through this.company providing temporary workers (which is cheaper for them as they get a shitty salary compared to a full time employee with all the benefits).
Wankers!
Nice thing though, the accounting department still sent him a christmas bonus (he quit somewhere around mai...)7 -
The Intern Developer told me that I was a awesome Mentor, Developer and nice guy but the Company is fucked up and he can't work in this negative environment. He quit today. After he left, my GM came and said that don't worry they find another awesome Intern.
Fuck why can't the GM resign.

-- Access colleague system
-- Create a screen saver with an "Updating your Windows" snapshot.
-- Add shortcut key to start screen saver.
Anytime I noticed that they left their desk for a brief... I'll head up to their PC and press the key combination to start up the screen saver... Then return to my seat and put on my sorry face. 😒6 -
I'm happy that Twitter employees just up and left when Elon Musk tried to bully them into working 100-hour weeks or have them leave the company. (According to what I read online).
It's not about the downfall of Twitter, but the employees showing the world that they can get better jobs elsewhere, if they are pushed over the edge.
I hope it sends a message to all douchebag CEOs and managers around the world that do the same kinda thing.14 -
First they came for the atheists, and I didn't speak out - because I'm not an atheist
Then they came for the university teachers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't like universities
Then they came for the gamers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't play videogames
Then they came for Open Source and I didn't speak out - because "anyone can fork it"
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me
I know I butchered the poem and I'm not comparing our social situation to the Holocaust (obviously), but I think it kind of illustrates that silence and gradually giving up ideals like justice and meritocracy can end up badly.
I also encourage you to read the actual poem it's pretty nice and food for thought.5 -
My parents are real sticklers for who is allowed to be on Netflix. They only let people on when they are present, and they never click 'save password'.
Me being a poor college student and desperate for the Netflix password, created a fake website for one of my parents to sign into.
How did I do this? I created my own localhost server with a backend database for the password to go to. I then copied the Netflix home screen and log in and asked them to log me into their account.
They said I can be on for one hour, and then they were signing me out.
I agreed to these terms.
As a small twist, I had also copied the no internet tab from Chrome for the page to redirect to. Knowing that once they logged in they would be expecting the main UI.
They logged in and then waited for the page to load. I, of course, put in a delay for the page to load and then displayed the no internet tab. They were confused and asked me to refresh, still nothing. I asked them if the router was out, and they went to check.
While they were away I quickly switched back to the real Netflix website and yelled back saying I got it working again. They came back over and saw that it was asking for a password again. They signed in and saw the main homepage and none were the wiser that day.
Once they left I checked inside the DB and found the plaintext password they typed in... The damn password was so simple, I cursed myself for not having figured it out sooner. No matter, I had my parents Netflix password.
So you're probably wondering how they didn't see the URL above and think something was off?
I pressed F11 and fullscreened my entire browser. They did ask, and I simply replied with, I don't like seeing all the crap up above when I'm streaming. No further questions, perhaps I was lucky.14 -
Since everyone seems to be talking about getting places late, here's my not-so-significant story about my most recent interview.
So I was told that GPS probably wouldn't work. But the instructions that I got were not specific enough to guide me - something I learned only once I arrived in the general area that I was supposed to be in.
Ended up going one street too far and talking to the wrong front desk. They kindly gave me instructions to get to my destination.
These instructions were also wrong. They left out one step and viola, I'm at the gate of the sheriff dog training facility.
Turn 'er around and finally get on the correct road. My 20 minutes early turned into 10 minutes late, just like that.
They were understanding and I got the job.5 -
We made a software for hospitals in my old department. The senior Dev kinda gave me the software, because he thought it sucked and was perfect for a newbie like me. I really loved my work and gave everything I had to improve the quality of software, introduced tests, refactored old smelly code and talked with the product manager to overhaul the ui. Several months later this little shit project the senior gave the newbie, was a huge success and better than any thrash that the senior has created. The senior was really pissed, so everytime I had some days off, he tried to sabotage me in any way. I couldn't take that and many other things anymore, so I left the company. The most tragic part is, that my software could become a massive foundation for the company, but after I left they abandoned it. I still had some good contacts within the old company and they said, that the senior dev told everyone how bad everything was, that I have done through the years and that they can't even describe how bad the architecture of the software is. tl;dr fuck off!! I've done so much things for the company and they never appreciated it. I'm glad I quit that job. Best decision ever!!2

The biggest scaling challenge...
Aha, when I joined my first (startup) company as an IT guy, they had 2 rooms in a small corner of a commercial building.
When I left the company after 2 years, they had two floors of that building with 40 rooms, had 5 different websites running in AWS, was using managed GSuite and a lot more.
So yeah, keeping up with all those was my biggest challenge.1 -
I was in a technical interview for a web development position. When it was time for them to choose a question they showed me this:
How can you make this code display 0 to 9 correctly?
for (var i=0; i < 10; i++){
setTimeout(function(){
console.log(i);
}, 1000);
}
When I saw the question I instantly smiled and rubbed my hands ready to answer since I knew exactly the answer and they told me:
"Oh you looked already familiar to this one, we'll choose another for you"
I legit stood up and left the fucking interview right there.14 -
One of the biggest reality checks you will run into when starting your first dev related job - and which they don't teach you about in school - is that a lot of the time will be spent working with other people's code, and rewriting it into "your own" is rarely an option.
You might be super into making things, but not everyone manages to maintain that same spark while taking over a 15 year old project with fundamental issues that have to be triaged "for now" because you need a hotfix on this other specific thing out in prod before lunch.
There are no gods now. They left the company years ago and nobody knows why they used the windows registry as a user repo.3 -
A company called me for a job interview for my internship. As they saw my LinkedIn, they said I had a great skill set built up as I was studying Software Engineering and working aside as a freelancer.
After a short talk they mentioned my international business management (IBMS) minor that I have taken and criticized me that I took a wrong path of my career, told me to rethink my position of my studies and said they will not take me into consideration for the position.
That left me puzzled. Like what was the reason of that call, just to criticize my decisions?
Can't remember the company name that called me here in The Netherlands.11 -
I was going to an interview and they kept me waiting for more than 1 hour without a notice. When the interviewer came, she didn't even apologize and gave me a form to fill out. I left the building and didn't come back. Did I did wrong? What would you do?14

I work at a school and am involved in building the new website. Specifically as an ex Web developer myself I am acting as intermediary between the leadership team and the company we have hired to build the site. The company has a "the customer is always right" approach and will do what they are asked for so my main role is stopping the school from making stupid requests.
For example yesterday they complained that the site looked different on mobile compared to desktop. Then they complained that the (long paragraph) welcome message appeared below the menu and quick links on mobile instead of above them (forcing users to scroll down to get to navigation controls). After many more complaints and mind boggling suggestions, and my attempts to explain responsive design and reducing cognitive load, I left the meeting with a headache and an urge to spend the next three hours drowning Lara Croft.
The most difficult part of any developers role: not throwing the keyboard at the client every time they say something stupid.1 -
I used to work in a company with such a high bus factor that we called "teams" composed of a single people "immortal" like in the movie "highlanders" because of the fact they could not be fired since they were the only people to know how their project works. We went through hard times for the company when several of the immortals resigned one by one. Each time one of us left premises on his last day, we played the song "Princes of the Universe" very loud on the office. I was the last and I left four months ago.3
-
Client had our company build them a site, they refused our hosting suggestions, and did not want any maintenance on their site.
They eventually left us as a client all together(they were getting other services so they occasionally got an edit or two) and sent several rude emails to delete their passwords so we wouldn't have access to their stuff anymore. I gladly gave the site over to the new company with a solid "good luck." I wanted nothing to do with this client anymore anyway.
Now I'm 9 months down the line and my AM sends me an email that the client wants maintenance. I'm already typing up a ranting email to tell them no, when I decide to check the site. There are WordPress php errors all over the site.
Idk what this other company did, but I want nothing to do with cleaning up someone else's screwups. If I were freelance, this would be a HUGE up charge.7 -
Got laid off last week with the rest of the dev team, except one full stack Laravel dev. Investors money drying up, and the clowns can't figure out how to sell what we have.
I was all of devops and cloud infra. Had a nice k8s cluster, all terraform and gitops. The only dev left is being asked to migrate all of it to Laravel forge. 7 ML microservices, monolith web app, hashicorp vault, perfect, mlflow, kubecost, rancher, some other random services.
The genius asked the dev to move everything to a single aws account and deploy publicly with Laravel forge... While adding more features. The VP of engineering just finished his 3 year plan for the 5 months of runway they have left.
I already have another job offer for 50k more a year. I'm out of here!13 -
... I Help a junior out by creating a fix for an issue they are having, later this very day he starts to share this fix with everyone. People are singing his praises what a clever junior. I'm just there in the corner of the room left like wtf just happened.2
-
At my first big boy job at a start up with only 50 users, we noticed we had cloud cost spikes about 20x larger than we were expecting. I remember spending all night debugging it, checking the requests as they go through.
The culprit? Someone left an async on a UseEffect with a variable that was regularly updated as a parameter.
In other words: every time a request was fired, the variable would change… so the function would sense the variable changed and fire it again, and so on.
Felt like a total hero. -
My dev mates are all gone for Xmas
Before one of them left we hugged.
He said:gonna get laid tonight, I'm going to be all out of orgasms
Me:YOU CANT SAY THAT WHILST YOUR HUGGING ANOTHER MAN!
Wtf is wrong with my friends
They like to freak me out by saying awkward things in uncomfortable situations
PS I don't hug people like ever I was trying to be nice 😕14 -
I earned devie middle. Bought devie left. I came in this morning and devie right is looking at me???
This may be a Tribble situation! Worried when I open my office door Monday they may come pouring out. What will I do with thousands of devies???5 -
First, they came for those who Open Source'd code.
And I did not speak out, because my code could never be used by anyone out of the company, anyway.
Then, they came for the Trade Unionists.
And I did not speak out, because I was not in a union.
Then, they came for those who worked from home.
And I did not speak out, because I was granted an exception.
Then, they came for Scrum Masters and other Agile practitioners.
And I did not speak out, because fuck those spreadsheet jockeys productivity thespians.
Then, they came for in-house Data Analysts and Data Engineers.
And there was no one left to speak out for us.
Yeah, folks. The day finally came. I'm officially updating my LinkedIn and putting a ridiculous sash under my picture, "open to work". The Layoffs came for me, too.6 -
A certain, reasonably sized company had a large in house payment system to handle all their client purchases that was developed many, many years ago. All the devs that developed it had left, and as it "just worked" they hadn't seen fit to get anyone to update or maintain it since.
That was all fine until it suddenly (and completely) stopped working one sunny afternoon.
After paying a small fortune for one of the original devs to come back and look at it, turns out the payment API it was based on had been retired. Warnings of deprecation had been sent out 18 months prior, but they had just been ignored, as the secretary receiving them after the devs left had no idea what it meant.6 -
Here's a prank I played at a university. They were using Windows on their computers. So I took screenshot of the desktop deleted all the icons hide the toolbar and set the screenshot as desktop background
After few while one girl sat on that pc tried to click on the icons but failed she was clicking the mouse hard that actually made me laugh and finally left off thinking that the pc is broken .
After few days turns out they called up an it guy for repairing that pc but even he failed at recognizing that prank and formatted pc think its some kind of virus or something.3 -
People on dating apps say they are very pissed off and frustrated when they’re ghosted.
As a developer you get eager calls from recruiters talking for hours. They say I’ll catch up with you first thing in the morning. An HR manager says I’ll get back to you in 14 hours (in 14 hours?? very precise). Even you get a contract offer from a manager who is rapidly contacts and convinces you.
Than you hear nothing, you are left on read.
“Professionals” communicate in that way. They are also getting paid whilst taking your time. What can you say to random people behind nicknames?
I don’t know what I would feel if they get back and I’m zombied. I really feel like unmatching meh.8 -
Christmas reminds me of my favourite development team ever. I first visited the team for a quick hello, before I started working with them, at Christmas time. Unlike the rest of the the company they had decorations and Christmas treats and the radio was on with Christmas songs. This set a very good impression.
When I did come to join them after the holidays I discovered that this team like having treats, would often sing songs together randomly and even make up new ones about their code on the spot. They had a great attitude to work and made the working environment a fun place to be. We did get lots done but I also learned so much being with them. When I left they wrote me a card filled with raps they had come up with reflecting my time with them. I still have that card.
I miss you guys dearly. Merry Christmas xxx -
Most awkward recruiter interaction was probably when I had to tell a staffing agency that I didn't want to work for them because I had already worked for them and left.
I got into IT by working for a staffing agency and I was contracted out to a large company's IT call center. Doing the usual sort of level-one tech support stuff. After my contract term ran out (and upon reminding my boss that she wouldn't be my boss for much longer if she didn't hire me away from the staffing agency), I was hired on full-time.
Six months later I left the call center and moved on to a cloud server development job in the same company. Not long after that, I got a message on LinkedIn from the staffing agency, offering to hire me on as a contractor working for one of their largest partners in the area.
I responded asking for more details, just for fun. The company I'd be working for, etc. Then I had to inform them that I had in fact previously worked for their firm, and now worked at the company that they were offering to contract me out to, and earning a fair bit more money than they were offering.
They didn't even look at my employment information on LinkedIn before sending the InMail. Just glanced over my skills, saw the magic buzzword "devops," and sent me a message.3 -
I hired 2 fresh out of school junior devs to work with me on my old web app.
They were brilliant, knew a lot of things, and were motivated.
They started complaining about how the code was shit, the db was shit, there were no best practices, the technology was old, bug fixing was boring, no comments in code.
I felt bad, very bad during 3 years, because they were absolutely right. I tried to work with them through better coding practices, rewriting, documenting etc.
Now they both have left.
I'm alone maintaining and evolving the application.
And I start to come across the code THEY developed.
What a bunch of shit. SQL queries bringing down the server. Duplicate code, because they didn't want even read the old one. Useless comments.
Performance killing functions. Exceptions swallowed without mercy. I have to clean up they poop.
I feel somewhat better, though. The application is still growing and holding the ground after many years and generating at least 800K$ per year in revenues.
Maybe better, but sad. I really wanted to share the project with somebody else but I failed, and I'm left alone....12 -
We had a kind of "computer club" back in a year. (AG in germany). The teacher left us (4 nerdy geeks) alone for a few minutes because he had to check on something.
He was still logged in with his IT-teacher account.
After a minute of reseach and a few little commands, we had our own school network admin account.
They still haven't removed (probably not even discovered) the account.
Sadly, the localgroup admin didn't have the highest rights..1 -
When your Tesla’s battery fails, because they cut costs, you are hit with a high-pressure, thick stream of chemical hellfire spanning your entire car’s interior space. It will burn you to a crisp in 30 seconds. Because of all those “aUtOmAtIoNs”, door-opening mechanism will also fail. There is no way you’ll get out.
After 30 seconds, there will be no one left to rescue. After two minutes, there will be nothing left to bury.
There is no way a fire squad could extinguish this. That’s a battery fire. If you remember your chem class, you know lithium burns violently underwater.
You’re gonna die. Elon won’t be responsible, as usual. No one will face any consequences.
But damn, what’s an epic bacon hyperloop tech way to go out, isn't it.15 -
I bought hosting and domain last year, I uploaded my site and left it for months. Last month I logged onto my webhost's user panel and the "login to cpanel" option of my hosting directed me to someone else's premium hosting, I realised it late and I had already deleted whole of the WP site as I presumed it was mine. I left the database intact, reached out to the domain owner getting the info via whois, surprisingly he is was all fine losing his merchant navy academy website.
However, I WAS NOT FINE because I am not fucking expecting my webhost to give someone access to my hosting, just like I got access to his.
Been two weeks and they are unable to fix it and I am pissed off. I had no urgent need but I WANT ACCESS WHEN I WANT.
They are not as big as GoDaddy but they are a reputed hosting provider in my country with nice and fancy WP domain etc management portal and everything. I never expected this from then. How the fuck would they let this happen.5 -
Funny how on Facebook (which I left years ago) I used to never get any likes for anything I wrote, even if it was meaningful.
Then I would look at the feeds of my friends and they would get ++'s for mainly useless and uninspired pop-culture reposts or posts of high narcissim.
It's ironic how they praised garbage rather than value.
I'm glad that on Devrant I at least get ++'s, indicating that people can relate to me. On Facebook, people faux-relate based on narcissim and faux-culture.
Shrug.12 -
At the beginning of April there were 9 of us in Ops, come May there will only be 3 of us left. :/
They've left because they disagreed with some the CTO was trying to do and he fired them, or just because they hate him. Every week it's a new game of "Who's going this time?". -
So I reach office early , bcz I like to have sun left when I go home.
Other devs arrive almost 3-4 hours after me. And when it's time to leave,
They : you leave so early
Me : yes you ahole. I come early too.
And then they get credits for staying long I'm like yeah if you come at 12-1 you have to stay back.
So fucking frustrating.7 -
Let’s see I suppose the most pissed off I’ve been at work would be....
Being blamed for a clients mistake when their newsletter email settings where being changed over to a new mailing system but during the change over they wanted to still send out mail using the old list. So a single endpoint was kept in place so they could send one last newsletter out after it was approved as part of the migration and they were to inform us when they were done so we could change that endpoint over.
Several months later when everyone had long forgotten about it, the client tried to send another mass mail out using the old endpoint and complained when no emails had been sent.
I was blamed for making this mistake even though management approved the fucking old endpoint to be left in place at the clients request against my concerns that someone’s going to forgot about this and I was never informed to swap it over.
I quit on the spot and walked out the door after that. -
I was hired to do a massive project as a temp. I got part way done and they hired me full time to finish. Then I moved to putting out production fires for unrelated systems until I left.2
-
Many people were hired to work on new product, but no one have told them that for one or two quarters they will have to maintain 20 years old project. I was ranting about this, but in the end accepted my fate, wiped tears with money and moved on. However one of devs took another path. When he was asked to work with .aspx and jquery 1.X instead of react, he just said : "Not going to happen" and left the building.5

The last software I worked on in my previous company (a few months back), was a temporary replacement because they were switching techs. It was meant to be replaced within 2 years.
So, before I left, I added a kill. 2 years and 2 months into the future. First it spams the devs with emails "how is the tech upgrade going?" with no further clues. 6 months later it will start throwing random exceptions at random intervals. 6 months after that it just terminates the application immediately upon startup. Snuck it in between large commits, and since they stopped code reviews when I left, doubt they found it.
There is a setting in configuration with an obscure name to disable it all.
I marked the dates in my calendar. Would love to be a fly on the wall then.3 -
Had a miserable evening yesterday. Me and my gf planned going out around 9pm to this movie with 2 other couples. Movie was kinda okay and we finished around midnight and went over to our apartment for drinks. We had lots of snacks and drinks ready, other couples brought some drinks.
Evening was kinda weird, guests were mainly just ranting about their work and household life and 2 hours in they started asking each other wether they should go home. In the end they left around 3am. I felt kinda defeated: some effort went into planning everything, and in the end I didnt feel much of a connection to them.
Maybe everyone was tired after a workday + late movie + drinks after the movie. But idk I expected more from people in late 20s. When planning we had two options: meeting on saturday or friday and they chose friday.
Anyways I guess either we are getting older or we just need to meet less often and more early in order not to run out of energy and stuff to talk about.7 -
I pulled it off! VMware on Linux is pretty rad! What you see in the pic is windows on my right monitor and Fedora on the left, Fedora serving as the host though.
They work seamlessly! (no lag at ALL)
Mind blown..

last day, 1 h 50 minutes left
now they ask about passwords, how is it with the backups and so on.
Well told him 3 months ago that the backups is on my server at home and I will remove the backups today ...8 -
Just read a comment on rant that stated "You’d be surprised as how disgusting people are especially in the work setting.". In regard to bathrooms. This reads true, for my current place of work
I was about to reply to that, but I thought this is worthy of a rant of its own. Allow me to quote some emails...
"We have had reports of excrement being left on toilet seats, which surely could be seen by the person responsible before they left the cubicle. "
"very poor toilet hygiene in some the ladies toilets.
Firstly, someone person should I say.... has used a toilet brush to clear a blockage in the Ladies loo nearest [removed]. They obviously couldn't unblock the toilet due to the density of the blockage and therefore.. returned the brush to it's holder full of the blockage!! "
"The phantom "snot" wiper is back and is using the back of the toilet door nearest the [removed] as a tissue! Again.. the poor Cleaner has had to clean this up... "
"Toilet paper being put in the Urinal blocking the system in [removed] and faeces being left on the toilet floor in [removed]. This goes without saying that this can't go on and it's not the cleaners job to be cleaning such messes! "
Its ever worse in our other office that contains a call centre. A lady was fired for leaving shit in the stairwells on multiple instances. She had been fired from her last role for the same thing.
There were also reports of subway subs been left in the toilet bowl.
You also find the most curious items in the waste bins (they have no lid, we're not search through them - just to make that clear) everything from half eaten sandwiches to watermelon.15 -
For the passed couple of years I've struggled with depression. This passed year has been so much better. I found a career path I enjoy, I learned a lot about myself, and I got a full time job.
I live with my grandparents and God bless their souls but I really want to move out. This realization really came last week when they left for a vacation and left me home alone. I've already lived away from home, volunteer work, internships. But now that I'm back home I'm bored, I have no responsibilities. I should also mention that I can't be myself around them, partly because I no longer believe in their God and partly because there never really was any transition between child and adult.
I talked it over with some older friends and they agreed that I should move out and offered some regally good advice.
I'm gonna wait until they get back and attempt to talk about it with them. I mean it's more of me telling them I'm moving out they can't really stop me at this point.
Anyway just wanted to get this off my chest. Hope you have a wonderful day.1 -
Next 3 days I' ll be working on moving our email server to new server because the old datacenter is closing down. Clients are pissed and they are fucking verbally bashing me left to right when I told them that their emails will be down since most of them host their own DNS.
I am fucked.3 -
So I've had a shoulder surgery to fix my problem always losing my left arm, I'm on a medical leave, so no work but i get payed, nice and dandy ... Yesterday my old colleague/friend calls me that he arranged an interview for me for a project ... Excuse me but wtf, I'm happy getting payed and not working 🤔
I vent to the interview, and all they want is to add Romanian and Hungarian translations to a site and mobile app they have, technically they don't even have access to the server or files to add the other languages.
Now explain that to a non tech guy.
We agreed that they get my answer when they have approval and access to the needed stuff 🤣
Edit: this also fits this weeks question6 -
Finish all my on-going side projects that have been left to gather dust due to lack of time and resources...
They may not be any good however they are fun to work on when I can. -
So this is a small glimpse of my company's website looks like after I left the company. Gosh they ruined the whole layout. I feel pity for them :P6
-
As a software house, we have many teams on different projects. One project was due to a Thursday, and the PM asked the team 1 week before if they could work over the weekend since there's a lot of things to do.
On the Friday before, one of the devs showed up a bit later than usual (around 10am), but ok...
After lunch he asked to talk to HR and also the boss. They talked for around 2h, then he started to say "goodbye and good luck" for everyone.
The project was on fire and he just... leave.
On the next 2 months another 4 people leave the company. All from the same team/project (but not with a big surprise like him).
Apparently, the team was constantly complaining to PM and boss about unrealistic deadlines and constant requirements changes, but they didn't did anything about it. Just when more than half this team had left the company they started to rethink this actions to this project and the others on the company.2 -
Our tech lead left a mess in the database. He turned his screw-up into an architectural discussion, weighing the benefits of duplicated, messy data vs. keeping it consistent. He suggested that, instead of fixing his broken script and cleaning the mess, we should break all of the other scripts and have them trash the database, too.
They almost believed it.
What a clever maneuver. I wish he would use his cleverness to make good software, instead. -
Oh my God. Did any of you catch Sundar from Google being grilled by Congress yesterday?
It is so embarrassing watching congressman who think they know technology ask questions did somebody who actually is technically proficient. you would think they would have hired somebody at least to educate them first before looking like an ass on TV.
It look like I asked my janitor to interview our next developer.
So funny though over his left shoulder there's a guy that looks like Sir topham hatt from Monopoly. Hahahahahahh not kidding black top hat and big white mustache.1 -
Got a text message from a former coworker who was spared the layoffs from $last_job.
"Go look at the status board, they left it up after the layoffs".
The 99% uptime is now down to 80% and you can practically pick out the exact week when the company laid off half the engineering team.
But hey, they redesigned the homepage and got a new logo.1 -
At my first internship I always had to cleanup the lunch area (after the lunch of course) and they would leave everything... One guy even left the crusts of his bread and so I had to cleanup everything. But the same guy one time left the crusts of an crusty bread roll... I mean what, how? WHY?? Who would do something like this?11

what a great idea to do server upgrades on a friday evening...and i can do it alone...and am responsible that everything works as expected...what a great day today...and i hate every single second of this day yet.. :-/
damnit i'm a developer, not a sysadmin, just because i can do it doesnt mean that i'm supposed to do it..what about our admins? what get they paid for? rebooting the coffeemachine? fuckers already left the building1 -
I hate looking stupid when I have to ask clarifying questions after the person explaining something to me has left out a ton of information. People assume way too often that I can “fill in the details” from a vague description that they think is complete.4
-
I hate phonecalls so i rarely do them. Today my project lead called me with a question and he just couldnt hear me. This was my fourth phonecall in 2 years time with this phone. And everytime they couldnt hear me. After switching to speaker they do.
Today I found out that my pinky is blocking the mic since its on the left side of the charger port. I guess Ive got a phone for lefthanded people. I hope I remember this in six months. -
So im a programming student at university, tasked with a small group project to make a simple 3d platformer in ue4.
End up with 3 games design students where I'm doing all of the technical stuff while they do sound, graphics and design.
So I make a simpe all purpose ai that can do everything they need and hand it over. The next day I get a call saying it doesn't work. Takes me an hour to realise they don't have a navmesh. Now, that wasn't too unreasonable mistake as they didn't know what one was but a few hours later they call me again saying it doesn't deal any damage.
I'm going through the blueprints and can't find out what isn't working until an idea pops into my head.
Me "Click the damage variable for me"
Them "What's a variable?"
Me "That thing on the bottom left that says damage. Then the world value should pop up on the right with a number, tell me that number."
Them "0"
So apparently they fucked with the variable and set damage dealt to 0. Dunno why, they didn't even know what it was nor what it did.
This is my life at the moment. I hope a real job ain't this bad :(1 -
I took over someone's code right after they left, and this was in there... By the way the containing method was about 300 lines long.7

Bitcoin Scam From (2022) Recovered By iBolt Cyber Hacker
In 2022, I fell victim to a Bitcoin scam that left me feeling hopeless and frustrated. After investing all my money and credit, I found myself unable to withdraw my funds, and my attempts to get help were ignored, rather they kept asking for more.
three days ago i saw a review of iBolt Cyber Hacker recovered four years bitcoin, i decided to ask questions and try, i can say they are really professionals, i happily write this review because iBolt successfully recovered 93% of my funds. I’m incredibly grateful, If you find yourself in a similar situation, I highly recommend iBolt Cyber Hacker.

Just sold my car waaayyy under it’s worth just because I don’t have much time left to relocate.
And those fuck faces want me to pay half of THEIR transport costs..
The both of us just signed a fucking contract you morons.
Read the contracts you write before giving them to anyone.
Good for me that I did.
Fucking unfriendly assholes trying to rip people off twice in a row..
They make immigrants look bad just because those guys are fucking idiots..
They didn’t get another penny from me those cock suckers..
And now, a good evening too all of you.

I saw a rant about overtime or staying late if your boss is still at the office.
It's the same in a(lmost all i think) Japanese Company.
9:00-18:00 work schedule.
Come in earlier than your boss before actual work schedule.
Go home after your boss after the actual work schedule.
There's no more work to be done and they think you going home early weren't doing enough work and shit.
Good think i left that company.3 -
Last week I stayed at a hotel near Prague. They named their access points like "first floor left" or "restaurant".
Even after 5 days I still had to retype the same generated password when i moved like 5 meter within the building... -
So... About a month ago 2 interns started a project from scratch at my company. My boss gave them a project to follow as an example (more for the api and database side).
Wednesday they ended the internship and I've began to help fix the rest of the kinks that were left to be fixed. Friday we were finishing up the app and api to send to the client for tests. The database was created with 4 tables that were equal in structure... Imagine that you need a table for orders and they have status like pending, cancelled, finished and accepted. What they've done was they created 4 tables, one for each status....
Why the hell would you do this???5 -
I tried to switch to protonmail from gmail 2 years back. But left in a week when I lost 2 important drafts.
I informed them about the bug. And the steps to reproduce it. But they denied to fix it.9 -
I really fucking hate somebody asking me to implement a scammy function on a shop/marketplace like "if theres 54% items left, put up a red label that says almost sold out", it works, it drives sales, and they will just find someone else to do it, if its not me, but its such a fucking dirty and ugly way of making people buy your own sold shit more than actual legitimate sellers (that already pay like 25% off of sold items) in the same category, since the shop/marketplace allows for other sellers to sell their stuff on there too, but those tricks don't apply to them, only after they cash into the "booster" program that costs almost 150$ a month, disgusting.10

I work in a very diverse team. I'm a white male, from the US and I have someone from Russia, one from China, and 2 from India. The best thing so far was a team building exercise, where we went to a AAA baseball game, and I got asked all kinds of questions, that of course seem strange to me.
How many pitches can the pitcher throw?
What happens if they hit it past the lines on the left and right?
Can they hit again if they strike out?4 -
I was out sick the day an urgent ETL job I was building would be due, so it got reassigned. When I return, I find most of my code commented out and replaced.
The first step was rewritten, with a comment that reads "Made changes to run faster." What used to be a single execution lasting 30 seconds was now a 4 step process taking 5 minutes, and yielding identical results.
Being a one-time execution (not a recurring job), I'm left wondering why they thought execution speed was even an issue, let alone what about their redesign they felt was an improvement...2 -
So TripleByte ended in rejection though they gave very detailed feedback and specific areas and even resources to look at. 👍
But it seems I'm not going to be able to escape algorithms in interviews so I'm not getting a new job anytime soon, even in tech.
So the only thing left to try in order to get my cake seems to be joining an open source project. -
I used to do some freelance work for a nonprofit. I’d do some website stuff and gallery sitting.
My friend was the gallery director. When she left, I decided to stop freelancing there and I dropped off the keys with the new director. I told them they could contact me later if they have questions about some things I implemented on the website. The new director thinks I’m a random freelancer and starts to BADMOUTH MY FRIEND, the former director.
Over a year later, the gallery assistant emails me asking about SSL warnings and cc’s the new director. WTF.
1) Those warnings were happening long before I left and long before I even started. 2) I am not your website support. I only invited contact for things I worked on. 3) The assistant already contacted Squarespace and Go Daddy for help and they gave her instructions.
I told her I didn’t set up their website and it sounds like she has the resources to resolve this on her own and she should contact Squarespace and Go Daddy if she needs more help. After all, you pay those companies for their services support and my time isn’t free.rant i didn’t set up your website that was happening before i touched anything my time isn’t free wk291 -
Step 1. Have no dissertation project.
Step 2. Wait for the last 3 hours till the deadline to come up with an idea.
Step 3. Realise that your just-thought-up project idea is something companies like Google and Amazon are still trying to figure out. But there is no time left.
Step 4: Approach your supervisor with the words "Imagine the possibilities". They respond with "Imagine the difficulty".
Step 5: They sign on it regardless since they are curious to see you fuck up with style, also you are too much in love with your idea already, and refuse to drop it.
Step 6: fml4 -
So I need to ask this because I've never experienced it.
Recently many of my colleagues left for greener pastures and now they're posting on linkedin once a week with some bullshit about how awesome it is to work wherever they went.
If this was one or two I wouldn't care, but it's like 90% of them vomiting this blatant brain-swill for almost 3 months now.
My suspicion is that these people are being coerced into posting this garbage. Am I correct that many companies these days are doing this now?7 -
All company meeting to discuss plans to move office, and they want to change all of the devs to hot-desking?!
Would be interested in your guys experiences if any of you have done it, but I feel I'd be affected a lot as I only work 3-4 days a week.
I literally stood up and left the meeting, saying I'd quit if they did it. I'm far more comfortable and productive with my setup and space. Knowing my co-workers they might think I'm saying it for drama but I think I actually would leave, despite everything else being fine (except HR!).16 -
I reset my mobile (Wileyfox Pro Windows 10) today and I had to open my old Lumia 535 to get a code for an app. The moment I turned it on the sensation of meeting a friend from old came back to me. I didn't realise I would be missing my old device.
It's kind of sad that Microsoft decided to pull the plug once again on their mobile platform. I liked the minimalism they brought to the interface and the integration they were trying to add between different devices.
All is gone now and I am left to wonder with the possibilities that would have brought.2 -

While in the banking world, I had a project where I had to automate an import into a shit system called CRAWiz. The data had to come from multiple archaic loan systems with no API and tons of shit data.
After implementing, the shit data came to light. Instead of fixing shit data (and using their loan systems correctly), they decided to go back to digging through physical files and manually importing. They blamed CRAWiz and decided to go with a new system to import their shit data into. I warned them repeatedly that a new system would not fix the shit data but they couldn't accept it. I left at that point. 😂 -
My boss's SQL schema has no foreign keys and he said he left them out intentionally because they should be handled in the application layer and they're a large performance impact.
This is a fresh greenfield project and he's already pre-optimizing for problems we don't have yet, on things that may or not be bottlenecks using ideas (e.g. foreign keys have huge performance costs on mariadb/auora) with no hard data or facts to back them up.
Let's start a new project with some technical debt!2 -
all the fun people at my workplace have either been fired or they have left. my workplace is bone dry now3
-
My last company had a code base originating in the 90's and they still write most parts of the GUI with a library that is a thin layer on top of Win32 API, with a self-rolled "ORM" for DB access (with LOTS of enums) and all that with >2million lines of C++ code. The code includes at least two implementations of std vector and std:list. One of which is even *named* std::vector. Feels good remembering that I have left that behind2

During the summer I was part of a three person brand new software team. One of my co-workers had a rubber duck, and explained rubber duck debugging. I brought in my own duck and it turned out to be identical to hers. On the last day I left my duck there with my other co-worker, so now they will both have ducks to talk to when nothing works! 🐤🚫🐛4

Really pissed at how Amazon is just assing off large chunks of money by offering managed services that use open source projects. Have nothing against Amazon but isn't open source supposed to be left open source, they should atleast setup a ratio of giving back to the community which developed the project, that's not a lot to ask for and to give!14

Set up a personalized web front page for the news organization I worked for in the spring. Left it for the editorial staff to be tested and approved.
Didn't hear a word for almost a year when the PO asked for me to deploy it.
After a few days, the editorial staff started asking questions.
I really, really wonder what they did all those months before release... -
The shady company that tried to interview me for a data entry job when I applied as a software developer called me. They left a message asking if I was still interested in a help desk position. Like nope and I never was. Been working at my current job as a software engineer for over a month. Try finding people who actually want the jobs you're offering!6

This is a personal rant, not a devRant. BUT ITS STILL A FUCKING RANT.
Anyways, I don't have a lot of friends. In fact, only one. That one friend used to pull of his moods on me, and I was more or less okay with that. When he was in a bad mood, I didn't annoy him too much. However, I expect the same from him.
Today he really triggered me badly, and at some point he knew he should just leave me alone. We were in a LoL lobby, and went into the Discord where I could hear how he is dragging me down, saying I'm an asshole etc. As a result of that, I left the lobby, and heard him say more bullshit. Then he talked about how he left at another server, since they were assholes and excluded them.
At was at that point were they deafed me. Meaning, I couldn't hear nor what they were saying or speak for myself. What is this bullshit? I mean, if your fucking best friend does this shit to you, how can you have faith or trust anybody else? It's just really fucked up, and fucking bullshit, and like the only place where I can vent off is here.
What a fucking piece of shit. And I keep forgiving him.5 -
For some project, I wrote this algoritem in Java to parse a lot of XML files and save data to database. It needs to have some tricks and optimisations to run in acceptable time. I did it and in average, it run for 8-10 minutes.
After I left company they got new guy. And he didn't know Java so they switched to PHP and rewrote the whole project. He did algorithm his way. After rewrite it run around 8 hours.
I was really proud of myself and shocked they consider it acceptable.4 -
Macbook keyboard is shit
Especially european variant.
I want to see any person in the world that is braindead enough to think that making short left shift if favour of having abolutely useless button there is good.
This is the most stupid decision that could be ever made.
Not only the symbols used by that button are seldom used, they also are duplicated on they other keyboard keys. But shift is used all the time and must be big enough instead of that shit.9 -
Problem:
some folks left the angular codebase full of ridicolous console.logs, client was upset as he noticed it during UAT
Solution:
1. add extra script in main template page
window.console.log = function(){};
2. translate it into JSFuck
3. if they ask, pretend it's a super-secret encryption algorithm to improve security6 -
Hey, fellow dRs.
I may need some help regarding this circuit.
It is about an 8 Bit multifunctional shift register with a 2 Bit instruction set.
These work:
If "Sel" is 0x00, the circuit loads data into its 8 D flip flops.
If "Sel" is 0x03, the circuit replaces all data with 0s.
These don't work (they do, but they do it in a very strange way and end up filling 1s instead):
If "Sel" is 0x01, it is supposed to ringshift bitwise to the right.
If "Sel" is 0x02, it is supposed to ringshift to the left.
As mentioned above. They do it in a very strange way. If we have 10000000, it will shift to the left or right depending on the "Sel"'s binary value. Let us say we want to shift it right. The output will turn from 10000000 to 01000000 (which is what we want), BUT after that it adds another 1 to it: 01100000. It keeps doing it until every single Bit is a 1. Same thing happens with the left ringshift.
I will include the other circuits used in this circuit in the comment section.25 -
Holy fuckin shit. Fuck java updates.
Today we deployed to production with a java app. For whatever reason it didn't work, just throwing SSL errors left and right.
Same app works on dev and qa
There's only one tiiiiny difference: Java 8 141 on dev/qa, Java 8 171 on prod
Guess what happened in 171 ... they updated the CA

I applied for software engineer in a software development firm. It clearly states in my resume that I am mainly a PHP developer in my current job. The company I applied for focuses on javascript frontend frameworks with Java Spring or node.js as backend.
The screening consisted of three parts; written exams, panel interview and the final interview. It lasted for a whole day, and when It's time for the final interview, the interviewer said that there are no slots left for trainee/junior level which is my level with 5 yrs experience in the industry.
I understand that this means that I will be trained with the technology that they are using so it will be an entry-level job but I submitted my resume several days ago and they didn't reviewed it first before making me attend the screening. I just wasted my time with this! They could've said from the start that they are not looking for people that do not have any experience with this technology/framework.

Wozniak, Apple don’t give a shit about what you think, they didn’t 34 years ago when you left and they certainly don’t today. Please stop commenting, you are irrelevant.11

"left or right? left or right?!"
DUDE! I'M RIDING A SMALL MOUNTAIN BIKE WITH A FUCKING HEAVY TRAILER OF GROCERIES AND YOU ARE IN A FUCKING E-BIKE!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GO AROUND ME PUSSY!!!! I'M NOT GOING TO GRIND UP AGAINST THE SIDEWALK WITH MY TRAILER.... BECAUSE ITS A FUCKING TRAILER, AND ITS FULL OF FUCKING GROCERIES!!!!!!
god, fucking boomers... i swear to god if i get one more rube talking to me while i'm biking and saying i should "stay to the right" when EVERY time i'm CLEARLY right of the middle of the road, i'm going to start yelling back rude comments and put the fucking low IQ assholes in their place... (probably what I should have done from the first place. why are we to take shit from them, when they own 75% of the wealth but are 25% of the population.) absolute fuck sticks get the fuck off my road, go ride off a cliff5 -
Glavic ++es my rants from time to time. I didn’t see them, so I guessed they were relatively new to the platform. I opened the profile and saw a rant that said “sometimes I star rants that don’t deserve it just to remember where I left off”, and now every time I see a ++ from Glavic, my brain remembers it, and I feel bad.4

So recently I got a new job in a respected creative agency with a good salary. FYI, I am a junior web dev with merely 2 years of experience. Office and everything is great about the job except the job itself. The senior dev have left the agency before I came and now they expect me to build a fucking transnational crm web application all by myself. And the deadline is in 6 weeks which only 4 left now. I don't want to believe that how they fucking give a junior dev such a big web project to build. In the beginning I wanted to resign but then I decided to build it. I have some difficulties but I think I'll manage to finish it. Just wanted to share how fucked up my current situation is. Fuck the managers btw.4
-
when you confirm with a friend that 2 different members of their team who left didn't contribute shit (one of which got into a meeting with management with them telling them to work) , but they also made more money than both of you and are now making more money in more successful companies in more senior roles
is it possible to learn this power /palpatine1 -
Documentation? That's the stuff of dreams for us.
Instead we have ancient code written by people who have long left / forgotten with no idea what the cryptic mess they left behind does. -
do you guys think it's dangerous territory to do something you weren't asked to do at work?
like, i know i can improve some minor inconveniences, but they are not the priority. on the other hand, we always have a bigger problem and the little stuff gets left behind. idk, i just want to leave things better than i found them9 -
Started further developing an app (that I had left dormant) for retail outlets in my town. Spoken to the managers and they said they like my idea, and want to trial run it and then if it works properly, they want to start having the other branches around the country use it.
Now to sit by ass behind my screen, and finish developing my app (meaning tackling the many bugs that made me pull my hair out last time)2 -
In my previous job, the head of tech was a bully and my project manager had an affair and probably sex at work with him after I rejected her attentions. They both played against me at work. Not to talk about the call centre there.. Have you ever tried to focus on programming whilst people at call centre talk loud about how often they walk their dog to poo? I've been used there and then kicked out in a very sneaky way. They didn't fire me because I've been awesome (as far as my colleagues said) at work, they just made me want to leave after increasing my salary. I left that job with disgust and indignation. My new job now is far better but still hear the voice of the head of tech sometime as a ghost in my head. If I was another kind of person I would have probably punched his mouth until it stopped offending and harassing me because of too much bleed in the teeth.5

They said do freelancing, you can work from wherever you want. But, I haven't left my house even once in last 7 months.
They said do freelancing, you get to take off days whenever you want. But, I haven't taken even a single day off, after starting freelancing.
They said do freelancing, you will have better work-life balance. But I feel like, I just code and go to the gym and sometimes make YouTube videos.
They said do freelancing, it's better security-wise. But, every month I'm fucking petrified thinking if I even will survive and pay my bills next month.
They said do freelancing, you can work and travel at the same time. But, I've been married 7 months now and haven't taken my wife to honeymoon trip yet.
Am I doing freelancing wrong?13 -
My first job was 3 years ago.
I was tasked to create feature updates for a referral system.
There were two programmers in that project , both had left the company before I started.
There left no documentation whatsoever. They gave me a copy of user manual as my guide. HAHA!
Half of the code was in code igniter framework(wasn't even familiar with it then), the other half was hard coded.
It was a total nightmare. Wish I had the guts to call it quits then and there. XD10 -
I'm looking at someone's shit code... and I have to remind myself... we all have the ability to be fucking stupid, especially when we're trying to do something in order to do something else so that we can do something else.
note to self: "always remember, they did the best they could with the resources they had at the time".
But that doesn't change the fact that I need to clean up the crap they left behind.5 -
Waiting for Apple to deprecate their iOS Safari and finally let people install real alternative browsers on their iPhones. Suckfari does not support aspect-ratio either, coincidentally spend hours to find that, now struggling with 100vh and -webkit-fill-available.
Microsoft at least left the choice to install something else besides Internet Explorer before they finally pulled the plug and provided Chromium Edge. Safari isn't the new Internet Explorer, it's worse.6 -
So... I had some money left over and added a 3d printer to my terrorist workshop (some of you might remember the picture I posted a while ago. A friend of mine gave it the name after the police stormed a hackerspace in Nuremberg and I wondered when they would kick down my door. )...
That's how far I got in two hours (from cutting open the package), and I don't really fancy myself dexterous... Not anymore at least.
I suppose this will be a weeklong project 😂.1 -
Today started off great!
New 5TiB HDD... Check!
Formatted with zfs under LUKS, with a high level.of compression and dedup... Check!
Copying over roughly 4TiB of data, about 2 of which was scattered in small files... Coworker unplugged it from AC thinking it was his (they are sort of similar), when the process was almost complete.
Goddamit. zpool scrub.... 6 hours left. It's 9 pm over here, and I'm not a fan of leaving my stuff at work. Goddammit.
...I guess tomorrow is another day.8 -

Every time we are on a hurry because we don't do X ...
Every time we are delayed because we don't do X ...
I get less and less motivated to be here...
Soon they won't hear me saying anything and will keep wondering why everything just melted after I left...2 -
So I was working on a website for a club in my college. I designed a pretty decent UI and at first everyone accepted it. So I made a working website with my friend, made backend with node and all was set.
After that, the fucking member of club brought in another graphic designer for changes. And they literally made the whole website with heavy images. The designer made heavy neon backgrounds in Adobe Illustrator and didn't even compressed it.
They made the whole fucking website with images and they ran it all on localhost and were happy with the speeds! ಠ_ಠ
They even put an image in fucking Navbar!
And then I left that project, I could not see more destruction.1 -
My GOTOs are:
- Check if focus on teamwork is emphasized. Does the company state themselves? Spend a day with the team if possible, see how they work together.
- What tools do they use? Sometimes this will hint you towards whether or not you will encounter a good environment or a jumbled mess.
- Is there organized communication? I know, sometimes there are too many meetings, but that is better than too vew. How often does the team meet, even if just for 10mins? How does management communicate with the team? What ways are provided to give feedback? Are suggestions to improve practices welcome?
I left my last company and joined my current one, where these things work out the way they should. While I liked both projects with respect to development, my mental state has improved dramatically in the new environment. Stress is down, productivity is up. I love my job. -
Aaagh...... 2022 this year has been shity for real..
So its now 1 year and I've been a fullstack developer for this mid tech company as the only developer
so I've been trying to get these guys to hire a second developer. and try to also upgrade equipment and these guys didnt even bother to attend to my requests and during my evaluation meeting on friday these guys where down my neck about why projects are taking time to complete i MEAN WTF!!!!! told them its bcoz Im a 1 man army and most of the times Im chocked with the "any other duty" thing and how tha fuck do they expect them projects to be done on time
I'm the only developer some times i get sick 2weeks and where i left off is were i continue from and thats 2 weeks work of progress down the drain
I'm so fucking pieced off ryt now I feel like droping this shity job and find a much better organization
they want me to build them a developer department and they dont even equip me with the necessary tools to do so WTF do they think they are doing they think they know better than me?
so let them build their fucking dev department without me
this has been a fucking stressful experiance
wrote them a later to hire a second developer
I dont fucking care how they are going to do it
contracting or an internal dev if they dont in the next 3 months I fucking leaving this shit7 -
It's like everytime you tell your PM that you need to be left alone to code their projects, it goes in one ear and out the other. I usually ignore them when busy coding, but then they start to blow you up on all forms of communication. Where are you? Why aren't you answering me? It's because I am coding away on all of your projects. If we sit here for hours talking, nothing would get done! Like was it necessary to message and call me on several forms of communication??

I don't understand some developer's thought processes when they fix a bug/issue.
Let's say the error is -> "Cannot read property id of undefined".
My first thought is to add a check for undefined and null and figure out if further code should be executed if a null or undefined is encountered, depending on what the code is supposed to do.
But some devs are like, "Yesterday the sunrise was at 5:30 AM, Earth's rotational axis is titled at 15 degrees to the left, My aunt asked me about how I am doing today, so therefore the bug fix is required at line 65,456 of this particular kernel file".
And they implement it, and it WORKS.
Weird.5 -
full of contradiction.
If u try freelancing nobody would pay you shit coz theres always someone who'd do it for 100$.
If you do get a good budget freelance project, any Dev you'd consider outsourcing to to split the work with will ask for more than the project is worth.
There's a lot of competition but it's basically made up of
- people from fancy universities who dont know shit coz they think their degree is worth something on its own and expect high salaries off the bat.
- people who figured out the first group are idiots and tried to self learn, so they joined bootcamps that spoon fed them some Laravel and React and now think they are high tier engineers but may not even know their way around a bash terminal
- people who actually know their shit, went through hell to get the skills they have now, could probably spin up a startup on their own
group 3 all left the country tho4 -
It baffles me that even now people still use ChatGPT to learn new things. LLMs are the antithesis of learning. They're inaccurate so you're left reasoning from flat out incorrect principles, they save you from encountering neighboring information to the answer you seek which is a central mechanic for developing a mental model, and the further away you are from common thought patterns the less their training applies which makes them fundamentally and unfixably terrible at detecting and correcting misunderstandings.38

Someone around here once said that they believe that Rust compiler errors are generated by first sending the compiler noise to some dude in India and then they parse the errors and send them back to the compiler.
This was not a nod against our friends from the land of India, but instead, I think, a praise.
Thus I would like to add a request to the rust devs to see if they could include more "trademark Indian" sassy remarks in the messages that the compiler generates. But I am afraid that they think I am being racist or something.
For reference: My Indian friends are all beyond sassy in the way they clap back at mfkers when having friendly arguments, I have been left with a "well, damn" in multiple occasions because I am incapable of reaching that level of sass myself.12 -
Here's a nightmarish tale that happened to me not long ago:
One of our stores was moving, so they asked me for help with the systems. Thinking it'd be fun, I said yes, and went. All I had to do was unplug everything and reorder it at the new location, sounds really easy right?
They hadn't cleaned the computer area in ten years.
Each time something broke, they replaced it...and left the old cables there. But that was nothing compared to just a little later, when I tackled the network situation.
For two stations, they had:
2 routers. 5 switches. A wi-fi adapter, even though the routers had that capability, an adsl modem backup and a...56k modem. ALL plugged. ALL linked.
Turns out they switched providers, and they didn't bother removing the old equipment. They just linked everything together.
Man, what a night it was -_-1 -
My former employer refuses to pay out my vacation time per state law. Left a month ago but they have not disabled my company email account.
Small shop so no active directory but still shocked they have not disabled my access. It’s only outlook/ office 365 no access to network drives.
What kind of small, petty and (mostly) legal havoc can I cause?
Something annoying but causes no monetary damage.6 -
for the people saying they have devrant on the main screen or even to the once that have it in the quick actions (really nice idea) I raise you with this, I just have to push in the top left of my screen and it opens devrant.4

Working for blockchain companies is kind of funny. They get endless money from investors, while shoveling manure.

Interview scheduled : 11.30 am
Reached venue: 11.15 am
Waiting for my turn : 2.30 pm
How much time should I wait: some one who is part of team, give me two minutes let me check

Why do they schedule interviews if they cant manage or provide proper inputs.😤😤5 -
Just left my first "here be dragon's" comment... I feel dirty.
I am required to develop using the WORST documentation, that I was told is 100% accurate, but contradicts itself, had blank parts, etc. When I emailed the creator, they fixed the parts I mentioned, but didn't proof the rest.
The math is probably all wrong, but I am working off their information and it seems to work in the one case they gave...1 -
!rant had my yob interview today, i hope i left a positive vibe, they want me to meet de other devs to evaluate my level of skill. Pray for me i'm good enough for their custom php management tool3

Do you guys think people realize how unclear they are, and are just too fucking lazy to write the full spec? Or are they just so fucking stupid they don't realize I literally have no fucking clue what to do exactly with comments like these?
I guess Hanlon's razor applies here, but some days I just don't know...
Happy Friday! ☠️rant dumb comments lets see how many tags devrant allows are you an idiot please kill me maybe i'll break it not technical no spec3 -
What's wrong with Mozilla?!
Savvy webdevs use link preloading to break up dependency chains for late discovered resources, and users like the faster loading as result. Firefox 56 started supporting that two and a half years ago. Turned out they had screwed up and it didn't work with non-cacheable resources. So Mozilla "fixed" that by disabling the feature altogether behind some config flag.
And they left it at that - still not supported. They even had patches, but decided not to merge them and instead try something different, some day.
Is Firefox becoming the new IE or what?6 -
In the 10th circle of Hell, we find those developers whose UI components move just as you're about to click/tap them.
Amongst other things, these accursed souls find that, when they go to sit down on the bog, a millisecond before their arse makes contact, the whole bathroom inexplicably moves 14 inches to the left so they actually sit on the handle of the brush.
Or they go to open a door, and just as their fingers are about to touch the handle, the handle is magically replaced by a live wolverine.2 -

The above link is an article about a new Amazon service allowing for purchased products to be placed inside your home. How does this work? With a "smart" lock.
When will people learn that the more technology they have, the more hackable they are? It'll only be a matter of time before people learn how to break these locks, leaving your house left unprotected.2 -
I left my previous job without notice period (didnt need to coz i hadnt signed any contracts with them yet and have not been there for more that 3 months) so they got pissed and decided to not pay me my monthly salary.
Today (4 months later) they have the nerve to contact me to check if I want to go back to them. :)3 -
In August 2021 I asked my bosses for a raise for my extra work that I done for the last 6 months to create the first 4 microservices in the company and deploy them in production on a new infrastructure that is cloud based.
Today 27/01/2022 they reported how happy they are of me and that they will take my proposal *in consideration*.
Now i am searching for a new job.
Funny part: I am simple guy if they would have given me a NAS from Synology with lot of space as a reward I would actually have been happy.
P.S. jokes on them, i left 4 easter eggs hidden in the app, pipeline, db and user manual.3 -
Hello everyone :)
I left a job a while ago (8 month maybe a little more), before me alot of the team left, and the lasts ones left after me.
They hired back an ex teammate from years ago (he actually started the POC), but he doesn't do php so much and don't know symfony and he's alone. I'm not either (i don't like php), i was doing python and admin sys for them, but i saw the project going/evolving for two years, so i can help them.
They contacted me a week ago, asking me some help. I said yes, (because i believed in the company and i'm too nice i guess), so i spend two days making a new script to setup the environment and serveur and also had to do some package update on the project (late shit with pear php apparently).
I don't have any way to make a bill, i don't own any company. So I'm not sure what i should ask for money, and if i should keep helping them.
(it has been my first serious real job, and i put some money in the company that i took back).
Should i keep helping for nothing even if it's only few hours the month or should i change this situation fast?! (already worked 20h for them, and the boss a nice guy)
Thanks devRant3 -
4 days left for project deadline and PM just realized that we are behind in the design. Meeting at 9AM, am sure that they will ask me to work really late to complete, I don't think it's possible.
Guys, should I let this project fail, just note that I didn't receive the designs?14 -
I left my previous job to concentrate on finishing up University. I've been working full-time at another company and doing freelance on the side since then.
Not too long ago I saw my old boss and he told me i shoud apply back at the company and get back working Front-end.
I went to check the job posting. To my surprise, the qualifications they were asking were completely different than what I was doing at the time.
I'm no longer qualified for my old job despite being more experienced and still learning. -
On a three months project for a website, the "strategists" and project managers spent two months and a half discussing the "strategy". It left us (production team) two weeks to create the content, the design, and code everything.
Of course it ended being rushed and somehow shitty, but they still congratulte themselves because they "nailed" the "strategy".

Tuition reimbursement I earned is getting denied because of the freaking beuracracy!

Yesterday was the last day at my job.
We had a nice review party (the team pushing back to Scrum)
After it they have said some heartworming words, I cleaned my PC and left .
I was amazed to hear all the good words, as I felt the team think the opposite of me.
For example, I felt the team thinks I'm pushy, they said im modest.1 -
they gave me my assestment results on todays interview ( american company w/ many red flags... ) : 89% with avg. 54%
for context : it was 40 questions for 20 mins. like many of them was how many of the pics are exactly the same and what is the next in the sequence ( not a single dev related )
finished them with about 2 mins left =]3 -
Seriously, can we just all agree and fuck Epic Games? And also their shitty EAC. RIP Rocket League on Linux. What's next? Oh wait...there is almost nothing left...
The best thing how they act like their retarded Store is better than Steam. You can suck my dick idiots.7 -
I wanted to suggest a functionality (keyboard shortcut) to a website. I see that their feedback button was pretty visible, which is weird because most websites I've visited first take you through 3 layers of "have you googled your question first?" before they let you send a question or feedback. Alas, I fell into the trap. First they asked me for the typical intrusive demographic info, and then they asked me marketing questions, and then... that's it. They didn't let me submit any feedback. They just took my info and left. great3

"The Perils of Overzealous Code Commenting"
In the land of code, where bugs roam free,
There lived a developer, a comment enthusiast, you see.
Their code was a masterpiece, a work of art,
But the comments? Oh, they took it too far!
For every line of code, a comment did appear,
Explaining the obvious with a touch of fear.
Their obsession with comments, though well-intentioned,
Left fellow developers scratching their heads, bewildered and pensioned.5 -
My first job wasn't as good as i hoped to be.
I had to do a content update to a overly plugined worpress site.
But non of my collegues could give me the code for the site to actually do something. I only could use the wordpress admin page.
My colleagues had to use a shitty php framework which was developed by an other company. They were so stressed..
After i talked to them they told me that everyone wants to leave the company.
And the boss was an arrogant asshole.
I left after a weak. -
I hope I’m not the only person who drafts a plan to build a thing to do a thing, and in the course of research about implementing the thing, winds up mashing together several other unrelated things because they looked like fun and the original thing gets left behind. (Oh, look, squirrel!)1
-
Had to get my car looked at because it kept veering to the right, and my team decides to meet to work on our website without me. "You don't have to be there. It's fine." Next day, I learn that they finished a lot of the website and there's not much left to do. No, it's fine. I only wanted to contribute the ******* simple backend stuff and look like I contributed nothing to the website.

So..
The company I was working at until two weeks ago just called me because they don't understand the project I've been working on (even though I provided in-depth documentation, which felt like I documented closely every bit twice -.- ) and they don't have any developer left who knows even a bit of python.
WHY PYTHON IN THE FIRST PLACE IF YOU DON'T EXTEND THE CONTRACT FOR THE MAIN DEVELOPER?!?!
Hypocrites...9 -
I was 4 when I was allowed at school to be on the single computer in reception. It came to break time the teachers just left me on it.
I think that’s because when my brother was kicked off 2 years prior (similar situation) he kicked up the biggest fuss possible so when it came to my first time they just went “nope not touching that”
And then a programmer was born -

Working with government contracts...
Them: We want an agile environment!
What they mean: Waterfall with bits and pieces of agile.
Them: We want to modernize our code!
What they mean: Oh, that is open source code from Russia or a country we don't like? No, even though it is a norm and a very powerful tool, we can't have communism here.
Them: We have a new task order for you.
What they mean: We won't approve you the money till you have a month left of the task order.3 -
I started as intern at the place. Worked unpaid for 4 months. Then they started paying. That's when shitload started. 5 web developers and 10 projects. 1 months later they fire one of us. Next month they fire another one. 3 developer and 8 projects. No documentation for they projects that were already started before I went there. Provide support for 3 year old project and nothing for reference. Salary was paid 10/15 days after the month war over. I couldn't take it anymore so I have a two months notice before leaving job. A month later all of the 3 android developers gave their notice. After we left, they haven't still paid us our final month's salary. Reason was it was not formal east of leaving and they projects we worked on haven't rolled out to market yet.
Talked and then mailed them the resignation two months in advance is not formal then I don't know what is.
Also how can the project be rolled out when there is specification change every 6 hour to 1 day on the project. Also we completed what was given to us and then the project hasn't rolled out because of new changes in the specification. -
I just took the "lead" over a small internal Projekt. I can not believe what they have done.
They somehow managed to use dependencies that are not managed by maven.
They 'used' the entire apache-commons library just to create empty InputStreams once!
And they merged unfinished tickets to the development branch which dont even work!
Did I mention that they all left the project in the middle of the sprint without saying a word and even without finishing their tickets...?
How... Why....4 -
Projects I left behind...
- Voice assistant for people with movement problems (also to send text /make calls while driving)
- client database for my community club (they are using a excel file till I finish)
- CNC helper... The only one I'm developing, with tables and sheet cheats for my work (and any other cnc machine worker), there isn't anything like that in the playstore
- Get a girlfriend
- make a baby -
So it's been a week since I left this company, but I still have access to all resources and stuff. I worked there on a project for 2 years, and in a week they managed to fuck up the codebase, because why follow guidelines I set up.
Ugh, hard to let go sometimes. But I know Im better of at this new job.1 -

Fuck mi ISP, really, fuck it.
It left the whole city without internet access for 3 days, and it's service is HORRIBLE.
Not only that, they don't expand the network they have and we are stuck with 5mbps! (3, effectively).
Imagine trying to download a file, while 2 other people are watching YouTube, and 2 other devices are PLAYING NETFLIX. OF COURSE IT WILL STOP WORKING.
I COULDN'T EVEN POST A RANT WITH AN IMAGE (it'd stuck loading for minutes).
I am trying to get a new ISP and this one will be wire to my personal PC, fuck them. However, as a house in the suburbs of a small satellite city, it's hard to get a decent new service.7 -
Lol this is actually funny
It was a promotion that involved doing more work but didn't involve me getting a change in title or pay
Thing is tho... The promotion was caused due to developers leaving left right and center and I left shortly after as well...so I guess it makes sense that they maybe saw that I was planning to leave *shrugs*1 -
I'm a workaholic.
My boss literally told me I've only used 1 PTO day this year and with only 2 weeks left I HAVE to take at least the rest of this week off.
Guess... I'm getting a really long weekend, took tomorrow thru Friday off, Monday and Tuesday are holiday, so only 3 days left of the year after 5 today.
Not taking the last 3 days next week because I don't trust my one co-worker to do end of month/year procedures without me there to verify they didn't fuck up anything.
Now I just have to get through that time stressing about things I'm responsible for breaking while I'm not there.5 -
Okaaay.....so after I got fucked at the technical interview i returned there the following day and wrote them code for a system that was actually on their pipeline
Left the thing 80% complete and they were like: Amaizing we will be in touch
And I left bouncing1 -
When the infinite layers of upper management and committees don't trust the ones in the battlefield, are too paranoid and disconnected from reality. They are the ones blocking and preventing the release.
Otherwise, we devs are on schedule, almost no bug left. -
My department was tasked with building browser extentions for Shopify to add functionality to their admin panel.
We warned the bosses about how unstable these extentions could become as there is no warning of changes to Shopify's code. If they make a small change it could break everything.
Instead of listening to us, what did they do? They doubled down and had us build this massive plug-in that adds dozens of complicated UIs and features to run the core of their business. I actually left the company over this and several other questionable decisions.
Last week I was catching up with their last remaining dev. Appearently a few weeks ago most of it fell apart and some of its not fixable unless Shopify makes some changes.1 -
My coworker has been freaking out that our company doesn't do Agile or Scrum right and it will negatively impact his career. He claims that some elite company will want him to prove he worked in well oiled Agile machine. He also claims his last company had it down to a T yet he voluntarily left so they couldn't have been that damn spectacular.
I'm on my 7th company and no one does this shit "right", everyone makes it up. Also it's impossible to prove that you worked in a perfect environment to a different employer, if they even care at all. If someone asks, just tell them what they want to hear because no one actually works in this mythical world of Agile perfection.1 -
When you bullsh*t stuff the whole meeting, then they setup a meeting tomorrow to continue where you left off today

Another thing about Android 9:
I miss the thing where shortcuts for settings, wifi, bluetooth etc are separate from the notification drawer and you can pick by dragging down on the left or right side of the screen. Because yes, I have a 19.5x9 aspect ratio, but have you ever tried to read long notifications in portrait mode?!? Notifications are important! They need more than 1.5cm (!) of space. Yes! I measured! And this is ridiculous! -
Viruses are little monsters that eat your computer away (or what's left from it) after it's dead. They start with the heart (BIOS) and then go to the CMOS chip.2

junior developer raises an issue saying that there's an application deployment error on one of their dev clusters.
sysadmin asks them to go back and look at the error logs and come back with the problem.
they come back saying, "No space left on device"
sysadmin takes a look at server. finds this :5 -
Learning information security yet again after doing multiple information security things for company and manager is pushing to do it saying "due immediately" and they're after sending "a number of emails" (it's due in a month and they sent 1 email).
Annoying that these things must be done again and again just because someone in sales let something slip or left their journal behind like a dumb dumb. It's not like I'm never off-site with my stuff or I interact with customer(s) yet1 -
I hate frameworks and I hate people (and companies) who disable comments because they hope to hide from questions and also hide themselves from the hate
Now I have nothing left to do but post hate on DevRant. There you have it. I hope your framework burns in hell; all versions of it.3 -
I know this is incredibly fucking minor, but
MY LAST HALF-DAY OF CPD HAS BEEN DROPPED AND I'M MAD ABOUT IT
I have literally two weeks left and they will. not. stop. pulling this shit. AAAARRGHHHH3 -
- Elon received daddy's money.
- Twitter will die in a week.
- Elon Musk didn't do shit. His employees did.
- ChatGPT is just a glorified chatbot. It's nothing new. (Doesn't realize they are shitting on the work of his employees).
These are the words of the coping left. Now we have to tools to replace woke left in IT. That means all woke politics along with it go out the door slowly. :)14 -
Most awesome game ever! It mostly plays by itself and cheats... or maybe it a bug: You (as Autoplay) don't have to beat all the NPCs to advance....
Strangely it feels sort of familiar... O right bc I usually God Mode all games..... But still need to play thru them manually.
Also there's some Chinese left in one of the buttons... they forgot to translate... But maybe that's... Most of time all we care about is the graphics and seeing rank go up....3 -
I remember there being someone on here who documented their progress on building their own sex robot with a bunch of Arduinos or something.
Who was that again? Are they still here?5 -
Is the past repeating itself? Am I in that situation again where I, as a junior developer, is left to my own devices on a project, with no code reviews, and with features being added/changed as they wish? 😟

Rant
The rumour goes that, with meetings with the highest staff, attendees lay their tokens (to enter the building) on the table in case they get fired and have to leave that very moment.
I once had to attend such a meeting as a simple application engineer. They had heard I could "do stuff with SharePoint".
The part about the tokens was a myth but that people get fired right away was not! One did get fired! I shit bricks back then. Especially when I got asked something very ridiculous and impossible... how would I say no?
Luckily I came up with an alternative.
But Damn. .. glad I left that place -
Once I had a junior who was the child of the boss, whom would refuse to listen because they thought they knew better. That junior was ambitious and always wanted harder tasks even though at the end of the day, someone would need to “pair” with them (aka go and do the task for them).
I left that place. Now I have a junior who knows so little that if they came and told me they don’t know how to turn on a computer, I wouldn’t be surprised (yes, unfortunately the bar went down incredibly fast).
I feel sorry for the new junior. I don’t have bandwidth for all of this. Nobody in the team has.
I do think it sucks that companies in general are so against juniors, but I wish at least that the ones who still make the cut were a little bit more prepared.6 -
Google showed so many nice things for Android. Curious to see what Apple will show next month .. they are getting left behind ..

Her: and they were roommates
My autistic ass, picking my belly button while contracting my neck muscles on the left side, trying to balance the tension in the precise spot between regular and uncontrollably cramped, singing “One” by U2 in my head, keeping my eyes completely relaxed to focus on those little blurry floaty thingys, knowing full well that when you focus on them, they disappear, assessing whether it is time to trim my nostrils' hair, focusing on feeling the surrounding smell, wondering whether I can figure out whether it is time to change my bedsheets without getting closer to them to smell them properly (do I feel the smell? I don't feel it, but is that because bedsheets are fresh, or because I'm too far away to smell it?), thinking about whether my T-shirt is exactly centered and whether one side has more fabric than the left, thus weighing more, so I have to readjust it, also thinking about whether “text/pain” is a good enough name for my book: please continue
(I know that the answer is “oh my god they were roommates”, but I want to socialize and not appear as a smartass, all while thinking about whether it's authentic or not)2 -
So... Working alone in a hollyday, at night .
Turning mill operator.
Started working here 2 months ago.
Had to stop a machine. They like to work by brute force here, so a tool is braking on every piece I try to make...
Might just go home early.
I know what the problem is and how to solve it, but I'm new here, I'm not going to tell the engenheir how these very expensive machines should operate.
Problem is: cutting tool should cut at most 1mm per passage, they program only one passage so its cutting maybe 10mm each time.
I just had to change a few parameters in the variables for cutting depth... But they will never learn while operators solve that problem behind the boss back. So machine is resting.
Also have no more pieces to work in the other machines... They don't pay well, so 4 people left just last month for better jobs and now there isn't enough workers to keep production.
Why do people still use 1940's methods in today's companies?2 -
my job fucked up.
I thought i had x amount of (paid) holdiays left (according to the online platform) so I took them for december. they were approved and now the "human resource" person double checked it and apparenlty it was a technical fault.... They got changed to unpaid holidays without checking in with me...
Is that legal?? Bunch of clowns9 -
"Oh I knew they'd say that it's why I didn't get them to test it "
Did these words really just come out of your mouth? Who the fuck left you in charge of planning this shit?
Some team manager requested dev work it got approved and done standard. However they knew from the get go their team would rip it apart so when it came to the testing phase did he get his team to use it?
No he pulled fucking random people from other teams who don't use this feature at all in their day to day to test and sign it off.
Sod your vision mate. Our team just lost two months of work your team's productivity has dropped because you had a picture of how things should be but didn't want to be told no. And for a fucking valid reason your method is shit.
Don't think he'll be left in charge of a project anytime soon. -
Big fucking rant....
3 employers, 3 sets of phone and in person interviews.
Guess how many provided even a scrap of feedback why they passed and did not hire me. I always ask at the end of the interview if I can address anything left out, if they have any concerns, etc.... Everything is fine, no concerns, we'll be in touch...
Except just to say no, but not why
What the fuck? Is this this just another form of ghosting? I don't get it - they spend hours interviewing. Mother fuckers can't even give 2 minutes to write a fucking reply email with a reason?

I provide training for our clients on our company CMS after having built them their sites.
I once had 3 ladies could me in for their FREE training session who were incredibly rude. They I territories me mid sentence to talk about unrelated stuff, spoke over me, were clearly uninterested in learning the system, and devolved the meeting into their own board meeting.
I didn't know how to deal with such rudeness without being rude back long story short they left having learned nothing, too dumb to work the system out themselves and I find ways to be unhelpful each time they ring up to ask for support they haven't paid for...4 -
Boss calls a team leads meeting which is just me and the other guy. Rest are product or project managers.
Turns out they concerns over how our last few sprints are always left unfinished as the work in it doesn't get passed QA.
Tried to tell him how can devs work on something that failed QA on the last day of the sprint.
We have one QA person who tests 20 something devs work. We are massively under resourced and yet they want us to do everything and always end up making promises to clients that we can't keep coz our sprint doesn't have capacity.
Yet they are hiring more product managers instead of getting some more QA help.
Sick & tired of this shit. -
Getting real sick of companies who think they can get out of obviously bad claims by making claims that are "less bad" and more technical. As if it improves the situation. But alas Huawei....
"No we weren't spying. It's not a back door. We just forgot that we left telnet enabled for 7 years."

Had to do the FizzBuzz test in PHP. Proceeded to creat a range(1, 100) before the for loop instead of using the loops own index #. Worst part is I realized what I had done in the parking lot after I left. They asked me multiple times how I could optimize the code too lol.

Recently, our COO left the company and we got a new one. He is, for some reason, a freelancer which I find very odd as a C-level employee.
Anyway, fast forward 3 months and we the scrum master (or project manager), 60% of our dev team, one tech guy responsible for installations and our intern IT support department all got fired.
Now they gave me the decision for a raise, extra training (that they pay) but I have to find/figure out or an e-bike. Does anyone have some advice?5 -
One company was looking for a developer, so they found my FB profile (yeah, Facebook). They scan my profile and contact me via Messenger and offer me a job. At the same time my previous company was in financial crisis and I'm the only staff left, so I felt so bored.
I give them a visit, then, voila, today is my first day there. Despite a bit far from my home, but it have wonderful workplace and apply good development practices. I'm comfortable here thank God. :)2 -
I learned that you should never trust someone saying "let me setup the basics for the project" if someone said that they'll probably come back with a book as thick as earth (round one) just to run that "basic" project. And yet it still won't run because errors and missing packages. Also they documented only half of the fixes they applied to get it running themselves.
Oh and then you only reached the point where you have no motivation left and only have a blank template to start. -
at one point documents were useful things to align people to the relevant information to the tasks they must complete for everything to work out
now documents are a ritual, and relevant information is even forgotten or omitted and considered secondary to the document existing and looking like a professional document
I wonder if this is how all industries evolve
at one point there were people who knew what they were doing, they created processes so nobody is left behind
and over time, whoever made the processes, the spirit for their existence, is forgotten
and you're left with empty rituals, so devoid of their original function, the humans subjected to these things, crushed by them, can't even discern what their usage is
evidently if you put monkeys in an enclosure with some apples up a tree with a mechanism that if a monkey goes up the tree and takes an apple it sprays all the other monkeys in the enclosure with water
the monkeys will learn to pull down any monkey trying to go up the tree, because they don't wanna get sprayed
and this will keep going, generations will change and yet they'll still religiously pull down the monkeys, in a ritual... nobody remembers why only that their parents did this to them, so they do it to others
if you take the trap away, they never figure it out, which is how this story is typically told
but regardless of if the trap is there or not
wouldn't you wanna know and see it for yourself instead of following empty rituals?!
and what of people who erroneously view things as traps, and pull people down, but they were just seeing things?!
self limiting myths to doom the ages! -
The end of today was hell...
Another company make changes to UAT for one part of the application and refuse to use VCS. This means we have to manually merge there changes in regularly. The developer in charge of this project left a few weeks ago and when someone new to the setup decided to pickup a task to re merge they accidentally did the scp command the wrong way around...
I probably don't need to say much more but we received MANY angry email and calls.1 -
Client deescalation needed and intervention by company leader...
Client refuses to test - too much work they say.
Client wants a lot of changes - but cannot define what.
But most frustrating... Even as we tried to with all patience that was left to find out what they were doing aka how they work, what work flows, documents and so on were involved, they basically started a team discussion and seemed to work all differently...
And the project should be a complete sale and warehouse solution, suited and written for their needs.
Really? How can a company like this work?
It's not the first time I've dealt with hard projects or 'weird' customers, but really the first time I have no fucking clue what I should do.
Can someone please summon Ctulhu?3 -
It was my first job, I went to the interview and the interviewee started looking at my github then he said you're hired you can start tomorrow. The next day I knew they had a web developer who worked there for a week and left because of college and they had projects to do so they just hired me.

Front end left extra pages in wireframe. I coded them and found out that i wasted an hour since they werent necessary anymore.

They told me I needed to know VBA, so went off and learnt it in a week (I only knew Turbo Pascal) 1st day in the job they put me on ASP. So it was great, by the time I left I knew TP, VBA, ASP and JavaScript. All before 1st year University!

Talk about giving me a headache..
Mmh k, so i want to move my current domain to cloudflare.
Go to current provider, their site report a previous provider has the record but that provider says they have nothing left.
Great.
Contact current provider and they tell me to contact cloudflare, cloudflare tells me to resolve that issue with my previous provider....

One good thing about being at a remote offline office with virtually no supervision or coworkers is long lunches. I left ~10mins ago, and if anyone calls (and no one will), I left just few minutes before they called.1

So yesterday I heard that after they let my previous contract expire, all other front enders also left... Awesum!

So GitHub's "Repository Refresh" layout is live now and they haven't fixed the damn .repohead (with the repo name and the links to Issues, Pull Requests, etc.) stretchting across the entire screen instead of being constrained to the middle column :/
If it annoys you just as much as it does me, just wack this CSS into a user css extensions and it's fixed:
.repohead .d-flex:first-of-type {
max-width: 1280px !important;
margin-left: auto !important;
margin-right: auto !important;
}
.repohead nav.js-repo-nav {
max-width: 1280px !important;
margin-left: auto !important;
margin-right: auto !important;
}
.repohead .UnderlineNav {
/* Remove repohead bottom divider */
box-shadow: none;
background-color: transparent !important;
}
.repohead {
/* Add repohead bottom divider to repohead so it stretches across the entire screen */
box-shadow: inset 0 -1px 0 #e1e4e8;

i always enjoyed computes and was always impress by them and by how much they could do. i stoped following computers and joined the U.S Military. while in, i would program a little here, a little there. thats when i decided that i was actually going to pursue it. so i started after i left the U.S Marines. at the age of 22 ish.

January is always the month of feedback and reflection. I dont mind going to the office x times a week and standing still on the highway every day. But if they are asking me to spend my own time on a course now they can lick my balls. Im already working for two years without a raise. Ik not continuing like this. I understand everyone needs to improve but if im exhausted at the end of the day by all the buzz in the office i dont have energy left for additional schooling. Im learning on the job. Deal with it1

A certain company:
1) Forbids to run its proprietary operating system on hardware that is not produced by the company itself (BTW sold extremely overpriced). Virtual machines included.
2) Makes laptops with wrong and unusable keyboard layouts.
3) Does not sell any kind of servers that can be mounted on a rack.
Why should any open source project waste resources and time to support it? They should just be left alone with their crappy software and their overpriced hardware.4 -
Shitty legacy codebase made by shovelling pile of different shit by some 'cool dude' who left the company 3 years ago. Fixing bugs on this pile of shit all the time, but also I have to document everything as documentation wasn't there at all and fix the whole damn project in the meantime. No linters, no types, ancient libraries that have shitton of issues, hacky behaviours wherever you look, no tests whatsoever.
Except when we want to refactor/rewrite we don't get time for fixing the whole shit as it is worthless - there's no value for customers in that.
the other one was shitty HR talk which consisted of bashing on my technical competencies by computer illiterate troglodyte after which I left the company. They asked me could I stay for 2 more months.
That was that one single NO that felt so great that I will remember it for the rest of my life. -
So I decided to finish college and get a degree in cs. 1,5 years left woohoo proud...
But they changed the curriculum and now I have to build software in oracle Apex.... Why does this exist? Where can I code? what is this. This is so slow, building software in a GUI. Does anyone here heard of this or even use this...
I just wanted to open my text editor and write some python. :(1 -

unigine sim engine has the worst documentation i've ever seen. it was written in bad english, occasionally did not follow a word convention (i.e. functions doing analogous work used different keywords), most items were just reiterations of function names (made up example for clarification: getAngularVelocity(): gets angular velocity...). i had to use it for my first ever job, and had to learn in from scratch, mostly by trial and error. it's been months since i switched jobs, and they were rolling a version 2 when i left, i hope they improved on their docs.

Why. Fix your automated phone service ffs!

few years ago... Setting up Ellucian's mobile product only to find out they left out where to put the config file (it's not in the typical App_Data directory or root of WAR file) it's in a hard coded spot on the C drive (C:\ellucianmobile\...groovy)
Below is the change request their support team put in to update the documentation...
Their documentation seems to be a bit spotty at times, almost as if they want you to have to pay their support / consultants to setup the products you bought from them -
I'm pretty sure remote teams don't work with the remote team doing all the coding and we have the same exact JD and in the same department...*sigh* when management are foreign, they really are afraid of letting the local tech team help out. No wonder we are 3, sorry 2 since a fellow dev left to a better job in Amsterdam

According to Lunduke, Google code has now 25% AI generated (only new part I assume) code and is doing layoffs because of that and prevents raises. We wouldnt be replaced by AI but if we work so fast with it, some still are if there's not enough work left anymore. But I also think that Google is the type of company where most people are doing unimportant stuff anyway. What sick stuff they must have with so many developers. There's not daily a new product or so30

Wordpress.com are idiots. I have free site there. And now I want to edit my posts and I clicn on my site in top left and it does not do anything. And its not a first time. Wtf. Fucking idiots. Or I click write when loaded my site, and it fukcing opens white page. What a fuck.3 -

How the fuck do I handle self-called senior developers who do not want to do testing (writing unit tests and manually testing) in an agile environment where there is dedicated tester anymore?
They behave like fresh programmers out of college only wanting to write their code and nothing more. We had a dedicated tester role but that guy left the project. -

for just fifteen dollars a day you TOO can help a poor beardleas man by sharing part of your beard today. All around the world beardless waifs are beaten, abused, and left out in the rain. They are hungry and cold. Please. For just twenty dollars a day you too can help one of these helpless beardless bastards. Everyday they get colder, and hungrier. Please, wont you have a heart. For just a hundred dollars a day you can make a difference.

When you unknowingly/accidentally/inadvertently delete something someone was working on for a long time and they don’t tell you until several months later when all the backups are long rotated out. No way to fix it and nothing left to do but accept blame and sanctions and work to regain lost trust. Kill me now.4

"We're surprised some tasks were getting done faster after you left."
No shit, Sherlock. 3 teams, each having multiple devs waiting with their own support queue, sat in on my handover. If they weren't getting done faster you're in a lot more trouble than you thought and I'd have jumped ship much faster. -
This may get me some hate from y'all but let me make a confession here.
I have taken away clients from my previous bosses when they made the mistake of giving the client direct access to me outside the company.
It happened in 2019, my manager gave the client my phone number so they could directly call me and assign me tasks. Well, I left that company and took the client away with me. Heck, I even made more money for the next 4 months from the client than the company was paying me.
Again in 2023 when I left my job, I sent out LinkedIn requests to all members of the client's org, hoping that they'd remember me and reach out for projects. Well, 2 months into leaving the company, they did reach out and now I'm making 3X what I was making before.
I'd do it again in the future again and again. If YOU and I partner up to work for a client, I will make sure that you are out of the equation ASAP.
There, I said it. I've done it twice and I'll do it again in the future.4 -
I always find it hilarious when I hear anyone say "I worked my ass off during my internship".
Because I did NOTHING at mine. I only showed up, browsed YouTube, drank company coffee and left.
I didn't have to pay them and they didn't pay me either. 3 months later, they gave me a certificate. That was the entire ordeal.5 -
I tried to make some SP using the syntax and formatting that visual studio outputs when making a SSRS report. I thought it was nice.
It formats the code in a standard way and transforms stuff like "join" to "INNER JOIN" and "left join" to "LEFT OUTER JOIN ".
When the team reviewed the code they were like WTF?! This syntax is horrible, it can't be understood. You did this?
*Me with my red face*...
I just said. You know what? I am going to go back to the old school syntax if you prefer. I just thought it was better.
Yeah... You really should go back to old school syntax.
---
Keep in mind that the old school syntax is annoying to me... No formatting at all and basic instructions are not in larger upper case.
Anyway, I thought it was nice tbh. I still think it is. And it is definitely better to me in some way.
What bothers me most is that they want to improve their coding. They say they want to be more standard and it seems every time you want to make a change it's not a good idea because "everything is already written that way". And when you don't make a change, "you should have change it"... Well sorry I was just copying the old style.
Anyways , it's not that important. I do get their point. Sometimes.1 -
tldr: i take pride of our code! It hurts when someone calls it wrong when i know it was right.
So there was this integrations team that are trying to connect to our api. This team has been throwing different people to work with us. We even taught them how to use postman/soapui with ssl, even to the point that we search stackoverflow to resolve their code-level issues and left us halfway, then came back again repeating all process. A year passed, they came back with the same issue... now all answer that they get from us was to “review past conversation”, Today, they insist that we repeat ssl onboarding process as they are having issues with their current one, we insisted not to do it, and told them we (including them) can proceed without changing the client ssl. And told them we had a snippet sent to resolve their issues, but instead told us in a rude way, our sample is wrong. I was challenged to prove that we can make it work by eod. With their wrong sense of pride as theyve been working for that issue for long, they started throwing tantrums on us, saying that we do not need to make them feel that they do not know what their doing. man! Cmon, its you who requested that snippet few years back, then you tell us you dont need it as it is not working, in the first place, it is not our job to code for you asses,...i left the channel after. it was escalated quickly to management and accounts team(those people who only cares for traffic/money).. asked to return to the channel, spoonfed the details to them, provided a working snippet and left again.not sure what happened next.,. I hope this started a fire on our management to handle such incompetence. -
So in my current job and the current projects that I was a founding member of, there have been a bunch things that have been done that has made the management of projects a complete nightmare. An example would be the vendor directory being submitted into the repository. This was not my decision as I was against it at the time.
So for the past 3 years I've been bitching about fixing it and have always been denied because they wanted me to work on other things. But with me leaving at the end of the month, they suddenly want me to fix everything. Guess they want to get every drop of work out of me as once I'm gone, there'll be no one left who understands the core of all the applications. -
Wow companies can be so inconsiderate when interviewing candidates. They’ve scheduled me for interviews at a days notice, and when I can’t make the interview they blame it on me!! Like who tf do they think they are!?! They hold all the power I guess. Ughh so frustrated with their interview process. This is the first time I have told an interviewer that I don’t think the company is a good fit for me, thanked them for their time and left. I’ve got bigger fish to fry.4

Don't you just hate politics being spoken about in work. Many deva go to uni and get brainwashed into a left wing LOONEYS. Fed up of keeping quiet while they slagging the right wing party off!!!

The project is not complete and already well beyond estimated work hours.

People usually use their phones in portrait mode. People often taking vertical photos and videos. People read books, and every book has portrait pages. Almost every website has unused space on left and right.
But when people see my vertical monitors they all like: oh man, you are weirdo, that's awful and uncomfortable.5 -
Hmmm.. I don't know but something sketchy was going on with my previous employer as they're not really registered here in our country yet so, they decided to put "Freelance" on our job title though we're working full-time or under a contract. Not really sure how that goes. Glad that I left that company.1

I was working at a restaurant and picked up a couple shifts notrealizing they were all on the same day. Started at 5:30 am as the opener, orked my normal 3-close shift and left at 7am the next day after doing after doing the night cleaning job. -

ahhh for that earlier time period where engineers didn't bother testing their designs so they could constantly role out the next model in a an endless wave of greed and cruelty while selling their children's body parts to disgusting perverse strangers with every bit of overstock sold and third world countries had their populations poisoned and our own society was left in a state of constant questioning about their own future and health even though none of this was exactly necessary..
oh wait... heh
and then they started burning landfills.

Laid the foundation and got a patent application for a custom Enterprise PHP framework that interacts with all of the big chat AI api's and can communicate with the outside world as IVR, SMS, Webchat, etc. Had corporate guidance but a lot of leeway and was the sole developer for a full year of the project. I've since left the company and they expanded the team and are soon to go to production with it.

Make an application that, whenever the left mouse button was clicked, it would open a dialog asking if the user really wants to close the top window if activated. Every time they would click it would say "Are you sure you want to close Microsoft Word?", in Word, for example.

seeing wwdc keynote and asking myself is there anything left they shouldn't cover and reply came from inside.
what do you want in iOS now??? Harry Potter?
they fucking opened there OS like never before -
In Xcode you can't have your project file view AND compile errors/warnings view visible at the same time. You always need to switch between them because they are different tabs in the left panel called the Navigator.
This lack of customizability is the worst part of Xcode. -
I finally reached a point in configuring my desktop where there is only one thing left to fix, the window control buttons.
Even though I don't think they look ugly, they make everything look a bit macOS-esque.
Can anyone recommend some or has an idea for a design?
Edit: more full scale versions of the images are in the comments.5 -

WTF with Uber Eats. Finally I had some amount left in my salary. I ordered food via Uber eats and they charged me. After sometime they restaurant not accepted my order and cancelled it. I paid for and I don't have an extra money for ordering. The repayment says it will repay in after 7 days. After Contacting customer care number, it is only priority for the ordered customers only. I'm starving now...Fuck this morning and Uber eats. Any devs from that shitty company take care of that flaw...they are taking this as a fucky business...
What a flaw...taking is faster and repayment takes 7 days...
Seriously out of my mind....fuck...fuck....7 -

Yeah, it's Friday morning and guess what I left my laptop work yesterday and who just got a text saying that the server is on their ass.. yeah you are right ME. And my team who can do the same job as me on restarting the application don't ever take action on this kind of thing... Well I hope they will in a few weeks because I will be gone then2

I've been asked to release a project which has been written by someone else, then rewritten by another developer, and both have left the company.
I can't release it yet because there is an inconsistent bug throwing some values out.
We've got it running side by side with an older legacy system which it's going to replace. Before the 2nd developer left they added some logging to our live system to record both values so that they could be monitored to make sure there was no inconsistency.
There are some inconsistencies... however, when I run the same data through the new system and the legacy system in a test environment they both come out correct.

I wonder sometimes is maybe management just like. Forgot that I'm my partner's primary transportation or something. I cannot imagine how else they would have approved putting them on a 4p-1a shift where they are alone and have no other transportation options save for me, their roommate who has to be up at 6a M-F, or walking home. But like it's 1a and actually freezing outside, so...
I dunno, maybe it's the sleep-deprivation, but it seems to me like they didn't think very hard about this, despite being made well aware a month or better in advance, and clearly understanding it then since HR had me take them for their drug test just before they were hired on because they didn't have another available ride.
But, then too, this is the same management and HR that left my partner without "official" access to clean drinking water or a working bathroom for almost 3 weeks because they delayed getting them a door code, so I'm not sure what I expected, exactly 😒4 -
So a client is apparently ignoring my request for payment to continue the hosting services for their blog ( which has been inactive for a long time ).
Thinking of getting rid of the client. I wouldn't mind if they voluntarily left because they don't want to pay, but now it's like i have to force them out.
This is going to be a rope walk. I wouldn't want their few hundred followers coming after me.
Any tips?9 -
I was assigned as an on-boarding buddy for a new hire in finance. I wish I had know they were hiring finance as I would have recommended a friend who had to relocate to Nashville to get her job back with Amazon.
They're hiring finance and sales people, but my company has yet to replace any of the developers who have left since the layoff last year. It's a startup, so I understand them needing to generate revenue more than anything else, but it really doesn't look good for the company.2 -
In the old XP days, if a colleague left their screen unlocked we'd take a screenshot of their desktop and set it as the desktop wallpaper. Then lock the screen and drag the unlock dialog off screen.
When they came back to their computer they would frantically click on everything not knowing why nothing would work. -
At my company they have this legacy system that's been around for a good 10 years now. The company told me they plan to break away from the legacy system, and this was 2 years ago. The reason that nothing has changed is because anyone that knows the legacy system have already left, and there's one service that relies on it. That team absolutely refuses to break away from it so everyone is stuck where they are. Given the attitude of the company employees, I'm pretty sure this legacy system will be around for another 10 years.

Any recommendations on a jquery/js plugin that saves form fields in the scenario where the user left the form or page they can come back and still have the values from when they left. I wrote up some thing for a small form on an old site using sessionStorage api but I need something that can work with any form or perhaps multiple forms at once. any good plugins out there?6

Anyone on vscode insiders, did they move the integrated terminal tabs to the left instead of the top where it's always been? Can you change it back?
Edit:
Ok settings > terminal > integrated show tabs can turn it off

Windows RDP, multiple sessions per user are turned on..
I always fall into one of existing sessions with all the crap left opened by my coworkers.. I'm fuckin sick of this shit, noone closes things after they stop using servers.. // the rant part
Is there a way to force new session on connect? // the question part
I tried googling but either I'm blind or don't know what to google.. only managed to find how to connect to specific existing session.. :/6 -
