So I need to create a nice new web app. Let's look at some cool JS frameworks that I can work with.
*5 mins later* Hm, Angular sounds good, is there any good competitor?
*5 mins later* Wow, React sounds awesome as well. Let me learn it.
Google search result:
"Planning to use react? Check out Vue JS first"
*5 mins later* Ok so vue seems faster than React and much easier to learn. Let me see if Vue is the final choice.
Google search result:
"Angular VS Knockout VS Ember VS React VS Mithril VS Mercury VS Ractive VS Vue VS Riot"
Nope, fuck it63 -
My last night:
- Had nothing much to work on.
- Opened a porn site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good video.
- Realized full screen isn't working on the page.
- Fired up JS console, spent the next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.
Bad UI = No Fuck.23 -
Thanks for the inforant too many irrelevant tags much wow too cool to google no shit how did google know amazing algorithm9

(Q: How much are you allowed to Google as a developer?)
“You’re allowed to Google as much as you want. This is not school, you’re employed to solve a problem. Nobody cares whether you Google for the answer or remember the answer from another Googling.”15 -
"Can you put my site as the first result on google?"
I can add SEO to your site, just give me your preferred keywords, a description, and let's make sure we follow white hat best practices etc.
"No call someone at google and ask how much to go to the top of the list"
So you want to pay for ads or..?
"No get a figure I can pay to get to first page"
"Or can you just edit the google"
... And so I never renewed that contract ever again, the end.12 -
First off I dont mind what OS you are using. This rant isnt about the OS but about hypocrisy for some of the users. Secondly Im sorry for typos, I typed it on my phone while waking up.
People are calling Windows spyware, so they are using Linux or MacOS. Even though I disagree with the term spyware I would be fine with that if you weren't a hypocrite.
How many of the people who use Linux and call windows spyware uses Google, Apple, Facebook or Twitter once in a while? I highly doubt you if you say you don't.
A few years back Ive tried to live without anything of google, this also meant blocking YouTube, their trackers an javascript libraries.
Not much of the internet still works if you block google servers.
Google is everywhere and always collects data.
Facebook and twitter also collects data about you. Everyone who has your number in their phone will share it with Whatsapp and google so they can build up a profile. Even if you dont block it.
What I am telling you is that its impossible to avoid being tracked by these companies (including MS).
Every company I mentioned here has a profile on you, if you want it or not.
So let's check which of these companies tries to follow European laws.
Google gets fine after fine but doesnt really try to avoid it.
It looks like Apple, MS, Facebook and Twitter are doing it better on this.
But if you check the European law every European citizen is allowed to request their complete profile collected by a company. And that means complete and not the public part you volunteered to give away.
So I tried it out.
Google didnt want to give it, apple didnt want to give it, Facebook didnt want to give it and Twitter doesnt want to give it.
The hypocrisy is becoming clesr with the following. I did get my complete profile from MS. It was a messy PDF file which crashed most PDF readers.
It contained a list of people I know and how I know them. It contained MS accounts I had in the past and my hobbies. (and quite a lot more)
So from these big companies MS is the only one following the European Law.
So yes they do collect data, but they are open in what they collect.
And Im not saying here that Microsoft is great just because they follow the law.
You can have your own opinion about this and do with it what you want. I just wanted to share some, maybe alternative, facts.
And again this isn't an OS rant or whatever. I dont mind what you do, but I do mind hypocrisy.18 -
Last week:
Client: Hey sometimes when I sent about 20 messages to your app they need a long time to arrive. Why is your app so slow?
Me: We are using Google Cloud Messaging to deliver messages. There is no guarantee when messages arrive.
Client: So such a big company is the fault? And not you? Pls make it faster. Make it always act the same.
Working as a programmer is pain in the ass because the people with the money don't know a shit about anything.
I changed just a fucking useless string.. I deployed the "new version" and I told him I boosted everything.
Today he spoked with my buddy about another thing and he told him by the way the app is now much faster.
..placebo update2 -
Google searching should be a school subject. There is so much people that dont know how to use it13

When you were growing up to be a developer and your mom brags about what a genius you were and has literally no idea what she was bragging about...
#IJustInstalledLinuxMomChill...
Funny story my step dad was bragging about me hacking Google to a group of his guys a few months ago (mind you I'm 21, he's a roofing contractor) and he calls me over and is like "yo, Jimmy. Tell them how you hacked google. (Obviously I never "hacked google", whatever that means) and this guy he's talking to say:
"Oh shit. You can do that shazz".
For my own amusement I replied:
"Yeah I hacked google last week. I HTML'd into their json databases to pull out an ASP in order to bash attack on their .Net services using only CSS"
Of course the man's only response at this point was to ask me how much it would cost me to build him a site...11 -
Throughout the day I check Google analytics, I do it so much that I have a habit of typing "anal" and hitting enter into chrome and it auto completes,
I accidentally typed it not realising I still had focus on my company Slack chat window. The delete message feature is disabled 😰.7 -
"Google does it". I hate that sentence. It's always the beginning of an unreasonable expectation.
Perhaps if we had as much devs as Google we could do it too. But we are 2 devs spread over 15 projects, so fuck off.8 -
So I migrated over to ja.stackoverflow.com, which is just the japanese version of stackoverflow, and realized how much different japanese devs are to the american ones Im used too.
On the standard StackOverflow I would see people argue and lots of questions would be downvoted. but on its japanese counterpart if you even ask for a little more context on a question they speak to you as if you were there boss. They also always say thank you sir at the end of their comment.
Im tempted to just keep google translate open and stay on ja.stackoverflow12 -
Twitter: We use your tweets to analyze your preferences and target ads for you..
Facebook & Whatsapp: We monitor your posts, locations, private chats and target ads for you..
Google: We spy your mails, sms, location, pretty much all your activity and tailor ads for you..
All of them combined: No one can beat us in breaching privacy and bombarding you with ads..
Amazon: Hold my beer 🍺5 -
Alright, I just wanna start off by saying that I'm a huge privacy guy. I hate all kinds of data collection companies like Google/Facebook/Amazon and all that. Yet I'm forced to have a Google account for certain reasons.
But the thing that I want to say is that I often talk to people to express my concerns about privacy. And most people agree and say that "yeah sure that's some scary shit" but don't actually do much about it.
And the thing is. If you just browse through all of the options in your Google account. You can turn off and remove almost all data collection/ad serving and identification options entirely.
And yet purple complain about that Google sees what you buy and shit. Turn everything off. Get and adblocker and get noscript. The single best browser add-on out there. It's almost that easy to get at least acceptable amounts of Internet privacy.
Please, don't ever ignore the significance of in Internet privacy. And the potential issue of net neutrality. Don't be ignorant. Don't be the client.24 -
!(short rant)
Look I understand online privacy is a concern and we should really be very much aware about what data we are giving to whom. But when does it turn from being aware to just being paranoid and a maniac about it.? I mean okay, I know facebook has access to your data including your whatsapp chat (presumably), google listens to your conversations and snoops on your mail and shit, amazon advertises that you must have their spy system (read alexa) install in your homes and numerous other cases. But in the end it really boils down to "everyone wants your data but who do you trust your data with?"
For me, facebook and the so-called social media sites are a strict no-no but I use whatsapp as my primary chating application. I like to use google for my searches because yaa it gives me more accurate search results as compared to ddg because it has my search history. I use gmail as my primary as well as work email because it is convinient and an adv here and there doesnt bother me. Their spam filters, the easy accessibility options, the storage they offer everything is much more convinient for me. I use linux for my work related stuff (obviously) but I play my games on windows. Alexa and such type of products are again a big no-no for me but I regularly shop from amazon and unless I am searching for some weird ass shit (which if you want to, do it in some incognito mode) I am fine with coming across some advs about things I searched for. Sometimes it reminds me of things I need to buy which I might have put off and later on forgot. I have an amazon prime account because prime video has some good shows in there. My primary web browser is chrome because I simply love its developer tools and I now have gotten used to it. So unless chrome is very much hogging on my ram, in which case I switch over to firefox for some of my tabs, I am okay with using chrome. I have a motorola phone with stock android which means all google apps pre-installed. I use hangouts, google keep, google map(cannot live without it now), heck even google photos, but I also deny certain accesses to apps which I find fishy like if you are a game, you should not have access to my gps. I live in India where we have aadhar cards(like the social securtiy number in the USA) where the government has our fingerprints and all our data because every damn thing now needs to be linked with your aadhar otherwise your service will be terminated. Like your mobile number, your investment policies, your income tax, heck even your marraige certificates need to be linked with your aadhar card. Here, I dont have any option but to give in because somehow "its in the interest of the nation". Not surprisingly, this thing recently came to light where you can get your hands on anyone's aadhar details including their fingerprints for just ₹50($1). Fuck that shit.
tl;dr
There are and should be always exceptions when it comes to privacy because when you give the other person your data, it sometimes makes your life much easier. On the other hand, people/services asking for your data with the sole purpose of infilterating into your private life and not providing any usefulness should just be boycotted. It all boils down to till what extent you wish to share your data(ranging from literally installing a spying device in your house to them knowing that I want to understand how spring security works) and how much do you trust the service with your data. Example being, I just shared most of my private data in this rant with a group of unknown people and I am okay with it, because I know I can trust dev rant with my posts(unlike facebook).29 -
I used to think that Google knew too much about my personal life, but now I feel like someone finally gets me 😍 (screenshot)4

It's funny how every one says Google respects your privacy.
I remember a few months ago, one of my manuscripts was removed by Google because it "violated the terms and services."
First of all, it's just a psychological crime thriller about murder. I read the terms and services and it said nothing about murder, so I didn't violate anything.
Second of all, assuming they removed it for the reason it was all bloody and about murder, how would they know that? Did they start snooping and read my manuscript?
Fortunately, it was recovered the next day, but if Google cares so much about your privacy, why would they read my document?28 -
- Google: Can I track you? You'd get this and that and much more if you allow me to.
- Microsoft: I will track you. Disable half of my settings if you do not want to be tracked.
- FB: I do NOT track you7 -
Hey, this is my first day and first post on DevRant ! :D
I just wanted to share with you how much i hate the WIX ads on YouTube!
"Hey, want a website? Build it yourself !"
What's wrong with their dumb algorithm at Google? I'm very familiar with web development, just use my cookies and understand that I MAKE MY OWN WEBSITES!13 -
You know the Microsoft guy who installed Chrome because Edge crashed.
Don't judge him that much!
The guys at Google use Microsoft's VSCode for their Firebase. Also they use Typescript.
Our company (if any) shouldn't determine the tools we use. I haven't used Edge, but they recently added full Css Grid support. I'm gonna give it a try for a week or two...8 -
Why are interviewers so resistant to letting people use Google while doing coding questions? It’s not like I can remember all the semantics of every language anyway, and so much of coding is learning to use Google correctly.8

Do you know what annoys the living fuck out of me?
Me: no...?
Me: may I tell?
Me: yes, please do!
Me: okay here we go:
Sites which use Google fonts or apis or ajax or other Google-hosted libraries.
It takes fucking ages to load those sites (if they lost et-all) since I block as much as possible from that cocksucking mass surveillance network.
Google, feel free to die in a fucking corner while getting an acid shower and being stripped of your skin layer by layer, as slow as possible to increase the pain and suffering.16 -
This is to dfox and trogus. I think that a lot of devRanters are very happy with the support option! Although i hate Google pretty much i made a very unlikely exception for you because i would love to support the social network where i, next to being able to rant and be among fellow devs, met quite some very nice devs with whom i still am in touch with through slack and some encrypted channels. Thanks for this awesome place and I'm proud to be a supporter 😃7

My mom was kind of addicted to one of those fake news buzzfeed kind of online communities. She used to send me these posts like every day.
Spent about two months deliberately destroying each and every "scientific article" she sent me. It was a pseudo-scientific trash fake news kind of page and pretty much every article was just made up or had same kind of communities as a reference. I just googled the shit out of each and every topic.
She's unsubscribed now.
Feels good. I noticed that most of people of previous generations really need to be taught how to use google. Some of these communities are full-blown propaganda machines spreading things like anti-vaxx or similar.6 -
On my way to buy a second hand Oneplus One!
I don't think that not being able to remove Google services from my phone because this phone isn't supported by open source roms is a valid excuse anymore, especially since the new dutch surveillance law goes into plan the 1st of May.
I don't have that much money but I can afford this second hand device right now so let's do this.
Will install an open source rom without Google apps onto it!26 -
Most of the tech YouTubers are really noob engineers.
Joma was a data scientist. He is an L3 engineer at Google and he hasn't done much during the last 1 year based on his internal stats.
I saw tech leads stats while he was at Google and that dude did nothing during his time. I'm sure he was an IC before he became a lead.
Clement talks about system design bull shit but he's a math major who worked on some angular front end while he was at Google. Basically his experience in tech is mostly involving using mat-button and mat-input. He also quit FB in a month.
Listening to tech lead gives me cancer. That guy was also some front end/ mobile engineer. I don't think any less of mobile engineers but tech leads acts as if he built some large scale systems at Google and FB. His opinion about react native shows how much of a noob he is. He also talked about docker in one of his video which showed he had some fundamental misunderstanding of what docker is. In his courses, he struggles to explain simple algorithms.
I don't know how these people have the courage to claim themselves as some sort of experts in the field when they are extreme noobs. They also sell some shady courses and are robbing innocent college kids.
One thing they all do well is talk. Which I give them 10/10.10 -
Anyone else feel like the rebranding was completely forced?
The typeface was so much better before. Google, I know you've invested heavily in sans-serif-ing the world for some reason but come on. Give it a rest.10 -
A big FUCK YOU to chrome, and a big FUCK YOU to google in generally. First the hell that is code.org, then the chrome. I genuinely want to open a dictionary in google to see if the word "privacy" is in there. Sure, first it was tracking users with by making them agree to a long ass TOS no one wants to read except lawyers, then barely even giving any info and asking for consent with YOUR data, but this is too far. For all you that dont know, LanSchool is an application that allows teachers to see students screens, internet history and more. Its the reason kids can't play games in English class. But most importantly, its a chrome extension. We have to do assignments from home right? So when we logon to the school account from home, LANSCHOOL GETS DOWNLOADED ANYRACKS EVERYTHING I DO. It pains me how teachers can view so much information unfairly because of some unknowing students, my friends privacy was unfairly in the hands of google and the school system. Right when I found out about tit (~2 mins after i first logged on) i made an Ubuntu VM just for goddamn google docs. Back to my friend, he went on some websites not to be considered appropriate, and got in huge trouble. He was completely unaware of the fact that they could see his screen, and I resent google for allowing a third party to manipulate my PERSONAL COMPUTER without my consent. Die google, you ruined android, which had so much potential, and now the web and virtual privacy. You should be <strike>ashamed</strike> dead, and I hope in the future you realize that one day people will have common sense.26

So my in-laws got a new computer 😑
Yup you know where this is going. Ok so after I transferred all of their data set them all up etc.
They wanted to use "word" and could I set it up for free for them. I said no Microsoft office is not free you lost your license and disk and your old computer is trashed so the better choice would be Google services . So I explained the value of using Google drive, docs, sheets etc.. today and told them how much better it is everything would be on their Google drive so if I got hit by a bus they could get a new computer again and still have access to their data etc... So they said great and so I did.
Two weeks later... Can you set up word for us on our computer. Me annoyed at this point " sure no problem"
I made a shortcut on their desktop to Google docs. Them: oh boy this is great see John all you have to do is click on google docs to go to word! Thanks so much!

Algorithms strike again :D
By the way I really much agree on both rants. People asking questions that they not even once typed into Google. Disturbing my workflow every 5 minutes...1 -
First of all, I hate crammers so much. These people kill the industry without even understanding it. They turned interviews into exams, missed the point of hiring, and saw no distinction between knowledge and information all the time. They don't understand that if you can google an answer in five seconds, it's not knowledge. It's information.
They don't understand that questions like 'what will Python do if you delete an item from a dict while iterating over it' are complete nonsense. They don't understand that it's not 'dig deep'; it's just a bad practice that leads to errors, thus must be avoided. The fact of remembering 'RuntimeError: dictionary changed size during iteration' means that you haven't been avoiding it enough.
One more example. Which signature is correct?
- ApplicationListener<ContextRefreshedEvent>
- ApplicationListener<ContextRefreshEvent>
- ApplicationListener<RefreshedEvent>
- ApplicationListener<RefreshEvent>
Second. What's the point of forcing you to write compilable code in google docs? Do they really expect that one could possibly remember 'import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;'? Seriously?
Third. Why do they expect me to know Spark, Java, J2EE, Spring Boot, Python, Kafka, Postgres, React/Redux, TypeScript, and work for miserable 70K EUR?
What's wrong with the European IT job market? Are they fucking nuts?9 -
Me: I'm going to be one of the grand finalists in the google code in challenge no matter what! I will complete as many challenges as I can per day.
Also Me: *forgets it existed after a week*
Me now: *just got reminded of it* Uhh, there's too many challenges and they are too much work... I'll try again next year.18 -
Apple you drove of delusional suckers! When will your retarded fashion devices finally support WEBP?!
A gallery page with images, and thanks to WEBP, it's 408 kB. Because Google made WEBP and handed out a well documented CLI FOSS compression tool that even can convert the source PNGs to lossy WEBP with bloody transparency. Well done, Google!
Except that Apple's shitty management can't take it that Google actually made something nice, so no WEBP. Instead, JPEG-2000 that enjoys nearly no fucking tool support. The free tools that even can deal with that mostly don't support transparency, and the encoder sucks donkeys so that JPEG still fucks JPEG-2000 big time.
So it's JPEG with matching background for iOS. Fine, but since JPEG's blocky artifacts are much more visible, the compression can't be that high, and it's 769 kB. That's 88% more image data for Shittari than for non-retarded browsers and even Edge! EDGE!!
Oh and if the user changes light/dark system mode according to surrounding light conditions, guess what happens? Yep, since JPEG doesn't support transparency, now it's different JPEGs with dark background via the media query in the "picture" element, and it's another 754 kB download. Bloody 1523 kB instead of 408 kB, that's a factor of 3.7!
Fuck your ass Crapple, with an electric eel!19 -
Check out Gotify! (if you want, of course)
I'm not involved in the project but it's pretty much a self hosted and fully open source pushover alternative which is NOT dependent on Google services.
Going to try it out tonight :D7 -
Google can you fucking not just kill off random projects that still have a very active userbase!!!
I know you want to merge the play music streaming with youtube music. But that is no reason to kill off the default music player on Android. Cause, y'know, A FUCKTONNE OF PPL STILL USE OFFLINE MUSIC!!!!
And to add more insult to this, Play Music is a default app on pretty much all Android phones. This means it cannot be uninstalled at all. (Unless you root) So thanks for the waste of space!!!17 -
I've been coding in Visual Studio so much that when Google Chrome pops up suggested autofill options I just press tab and nothing happens.5

Son of a... insurance tracker
You hit delete and I’m stuck with this reply!?!
Stuff it, I’ll rant about it instead of commenting.
How’s an insurance e company any different to google tracking your every move, except now it’s for “insurance policy premiums” and setting pricing models on when, how, and potentially why you drive.
Granted no company should have enough gps data to be able to create a behaviour driven ai that can predict your where and when’s with great accuracy.
The fight to remove this kind of tech from our lives is long over, now we have to deal with the consequences of giving companies way to much information.
- good lord, I sound like a privacy activists here, I think I’ve been around @linuxxx to long.20 -
I pretty much just copied code from Google for a good 2 years, following tutorials on Java, until I actually got a basic understanding of wtf I was doing. I could understand the syntax, loops, and conditional statements well, but for some reason I didn't quite understand the concept of an object until I took a class on Java development during my high school career, where it finally 'clicked'.3

New project at work involving Google Nest Hubs, supervisor asks me to do the initial setup of one of them to start developing with it using its API.
I start looking throughout the documentation and realise that we need to setup a work google account in order to register the devices, pay a fee and only THEN be able to use Google's API for Smart Devices (damn, you, Google!). Supervisor is somewhat baffled by this, and in my head I'm also surprised by his reaction. I'd assume you'd research your devices before you buy them, right?
Later, he comes into the room I'm in (I'm still allowed to work on location), looks at the freshly setup Nest Hub, saying "wow, this sure is a much smaller screen than I was expecting". I mean, you did research these devices before you bought TWENTY of them. RIGHT?!
On my way to fight with this Google device-registration-API-thing now.
To be continued...11 -

finally i finished a project and released my first game in google play!
very satisfaction, much wow.
now creating a list of features i will add in future updates, working on a marketing campaign and building concepts for future projects.19 -
This is probably a dumb question but:
I've (maybe embarrassingly) never been approached by a recruiter. Why does everyone hate them so much?
Wouldn't being approached by, say, a recruiter from Google or Facebook or whatever be something to be excited about?24 -
After being in China for one week,I realized how much I actually use Google during the day.don't know how they do this but even using a VPN is not a solution most of the times :-? At least devRant is not blocked here;)13

I love it when a fellow "dev" asks about some interesting security topic (full disk encryption) and I'm like "yeah I use LUKS pretty much everywhere".. and then takes an entire arm when given a hand.
Performance in LUKS? Yeah sure you can benchmark it within cryptsetup. Here's how to do it and choose a good cipher for your CPU.
D: Oh also how do I check my battery life?
M (thinking): you lazy fucking piece of shit.
M: FUCKING GOOGLE IT
D: Obviously that means that you don't know it.
M (thinking): so not only lazy but also disgustingly ungrateful, fucking twat.
M: acpi. Next time fucking Google it.
D: You know what? Never mind.
As if I'm the one that's fucking wrong now!! But you know what, never mind indeed. Because you've successfully wasted my fucking time instead of fucking googling "check battery life Linux" like a sensible dev would.
Fellow "dev", if you're on devRant I hope you read this. You can seriously go fuck yourself.4 -
I've recently received another invitation to Google's Foobar challenges.
A while ago someone here on devRant (which I believe works at Google, and whose support I deeply appreciate) sent me a couple of links to it too. Unfortunately back then I didn't take the time to learn the programming languages (Python or Java) that Google requires for these challenges. This time I'm putting everything on Python, as it's the easiest language to learn when coming from Bash.
But at the end of the day.. I am a sysadmin, not a developer. I don't know a single thing about either of these languages. Yet I can't take these challenges as the sysadmin I am. Instead, I have to learn a new language which chances are I'll never need again outside of some HR dickhead's interview with lateral thinking questions and whiteboard programming, probably prohibited from using Google search like every sane programmer and/or sysadmin would for practical challenges that actually occur in real life.
I don't want to do that. Google is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I get that. Many people would probably even steal that foobar link from me if they could. But I don't think that for me it's the right thing to do. Google has made a serious difference by actually challenging developers with practical scenarios, and that's vastly superior to whatever a HR person at any other company could cobble together for an interview. But there's one thing that they don't seem to realize. A company like Google consists of more than just developers. Not only that, it probably consists - even within their developer circles - of more than just Python and Java developers. If any company would know about languages that are more optimized such as C, it would be Google that has to leverage this performance in order to be able to deliver their services.
I'll be frank here. Foobar has its own issues that I don't like. But if Google were a nice company, I'd go for it all the way nonetheless - after all, they are arguably the single biggest tech company in the world, and the tech industry itself is one of the biggest ones in the world nowadays. It's safe to say that there's likely no opportunity like working at Google. But I don't think it's the right thing. Even if I did know Python or Java... Even if I did. I don't like Google's business decisions.
I've recently flashed my OnePlus 6T with LineageOS. It's now completely Google-free, except for a stock Yalp account (that I'm too afraid to replace with my actual Google account because oh dear, third-party app stores, oh dear that could damage our business and has to be made highly illegal!1!). My contacts on that phone are are all gone. They're all stored on a Google server somewhere (except for some like @linuxxx' that I consciously stored on device storage and thus lost a while back), waiting for me to log back in and sync them back. I've never asked for this. If Google explicitly told me that they'd sync all my contacts to my Google account and offer feasible alternatives, I'd probably given more priority to building a CalDAV and CardDAV server of my own. Because I do have the skills and desire to maintain that myself. I don't want Google to do this for me.
Move fast and break things. I've even got a special Termux script on my home screen, aptly named Unfuck-Google-Play. Every other day I have to use it. Google Search. When I open it on my Nexus 6P, which was Google's foray into hardware and in which they failed quite spectacularly - I've even almost bent and killed it tonight, after cursing at that piece of shit every goddamn day - the Google app opens, I type some text into it.. and then it just jumps back to the beginning of whatever I was typing. A preloader of sorts. The app is a fucking web page parser, or heck probably even just an API parser. How does that in any way justify such shitty preloaders? How does that in any way justify such crappy performance on anything but the most recent flagships? I could go on about this all day... I used to run modern Linux on a 15 year old laptop, smoothly. So don't you Google tell me that a - probably trillion dollar - company can't do that shit right. When there's (commercialized) community projects like DuckDuckGo that do things a million times better than you do - yet they can't compete with you due to your shit being preloaded on every phone and tablet and impossible to remove without rooting - that you Google can't do that and a lot more. You've got fucking Google Assistant for fucks sake! Yet you can't make a decent search app - the goddamn thing that your company started with in the first place!?
I'm sorry. I'd love to work at Google and taste the diversity that this company has to offer. But there's *a lot* wrong with it at the business end too. That is something that - in that state - I don't think I want to contribute to, despite it being pretty much a lottery ticket that I've been fortunate enough to draw twice.
Maybe I should just start my own company.6 -

It happens every goddamn time, why the fuck i can't download this shit !? Because these countries are fighting each other all the time! What did i do wrong in my life? I just want to download your fucking app to write another shitty app to continue my fucking life. I don't know shit about this wars happening, I'm just a dev like others all over the world.
Downloading an app, is that too much to ask? Well fuck you then.14 -

Me: "that's not how cookies work.. the info needs to be stored somewhere, where we can access it. It's not in guests cookies"
"How does Google do then? They're tracking everything we do.. *bla* *bla*"

I study software engineering, so that obviously means I'm also free family tech support right?
Apparently some lady that lives nearby believes this, but she replaced family with vague acquaintance.
This lady is very computer illiterate, so much that I have to describe the wifi icon as a dot with two waves above it.
So one day, she calls me because her Outlook isn't receiving mail. I ask her if she has any internet and she confirms she does because she can visit Google. After trying a bunch of possible solutions in Outlook, I ask her to download a remote access program so I can look at what's wrong.
She didn't have internet. Visiting Google means seeing the Chrome logo apparently.4 -
Story time on my job hunt: Currently interviewing with Google during my notice period.
I always had a love hate relationship with Google. Unlike my hate towards Meta or Amazon, where I had a reason to hate them for how ill intended they are, I never had a valid reason to dislike or hate Google apart from the fact that they steal my data.
That's it. That's my only reason why I hate Google. But I fell in love with their products during my trip to Istanbul and how throughout my journey, Google products were there for me to solve all my needs.
As y'all know, I was treated badly during my Meta interview, last October. With Google, the experience is on another level.
People are fucking smart and ingenious, but at the same time very polite, humble, and respectful.
During my 3 interviews so far (2 more remaining), each one of them made me so comfortable that I was more anxious before the interview than during or after.
They supported me during each question they asked. They made me felt heard and focused on my strength, instead of the weaknesses (or trying to break me down unnecessarily).
The interview syllabus is so fucking vast, and recruiters know so much that they helped me not only with preparation material, but also guided me personally. Haven't seen such knowledgeable recruiters.
The questions were dynamic in nature and thankfully because of my preparation, I was able to answer them most.
Overall, the culture at Google seems brilliant and an environment where one can flourish. No wonder companies are trying to copy every aspect of how Google operates and no surprise that Google is doing well at scale.
I feel so high on emotions (positively), after these interviews that I wonder how would it be to work at Google with such phenomenal people and exceptional environment.7 -
College rant:
I have finals next week. I am sitting here learning about things which have no benefit to my career. My college requires me to take Calculus based physics 2, which makes no sense to me at all! I do appreciate physics however I would much rather be coding. In my CS courses you learn theory which is fine, however very impractical. I last October I realized how much more you need to do and a degree just won't cut it. I spend about 50 hours a week learning TDD, git, hashes all this stuff that is not taught in school. Then on top of this I'm learning pointless crap that if I ever needed in a real world situation I would go to Kahn Academy or simply Google it. I'm upset because I have to stop coding for the week to study information I will forget 2 weeks from now, and most likely never use again. I have a job someone offered me which will be extremely beneficial to my career however I have to wait a week to even look at it. I'm just bitter.23 -
Me: Asking a lot of junior questions
Dev: Stop! Before you ask another question - think for 10 minutes, google another 15 minutes and if you don't find anything - ask me.
^ This was the best thing he said, after that I can google pretty much anything, and hell, I even go to 5-th page of the google from time to time!5 -
Google, why the fuck did you make the Android default USB connection type be "charging," and NOT "MTP"?! And leave no way to EVER set default to MTP!!!
EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME I plug my phone into my pc to transfer files, I have to open my notifications shade, scroll to the bottom to the fixed notifications, and change the mode to MTP, at which point the phone has to re-establish its connection to the pc!
This has been an issue from Android M and onwards. Nonetheless, Google still left in the settings app under developer options on rooted devices, the setting to choose which default USB connection mode you want to use. Even though it doesn't stay on what you choose!! It's like they left that there to purposely toy with us and get a good fucking laugh from our needless suffering.
Google, I love so much of what you do and your approaches, but honestly, some of the things you do, like this and for disabling Chrome extensions on Chrome internal pages, makes me want to strangle you and then throw you in a river of molten lava.34 -
Great alternative to google translate if your languages are supported: https://www.deepl.com/translator has much more fluent translations too.10

SCREWED OVER GOOGLE WITH MICROSOFT!!!! YES!!!
So as I'm deaf, I've always had a problem with captions or lack of them.
I thought Live Captions would fix it but it's only supported on selected devices and not enabled for calls and conferences like Zoom, WhatsApp.
I tried hooking up my sound card with an audio capble to my phone which has LC and also Live Transcribe... but somehow wouldn't pick up the audio.
Then today I was like wait... I could just install a Pixel emulator... excepy seems Google thought of that...
(I installed VB Cable virtual sound card and routed sound out to mic in).
Well first apparently, the emulator does not actually identify as Pixel... it identifies as an Emulator that sorta looks like Pixel...
Which means no LC...
I installed LT and also a sound meter which confirmed it was getting the audio but no transcription...
Though I tried GBoard and it sorta worked..
But I would like continuous transcription... and so I open the app store and try all the apps until I hit MSFT Translate...
Which has a convo mode which seems pretty much designed to screw Google over lol. Just need to start a Convo with myself...25 -
I'm a junior dev working with some very proprietary applications. The point is, I can't Google for code solutions at all.
The seniors are all very put upon and too busy to offer much actual help unless it's urgent.
I beg for assistance until I'm blue in the face and eventually stumble my way to something resembling the solution.
I get one of them to review my code, and while they do I point out all the places I STILL need help.
They don't answer any of those questions but damned if they don't have opinions on how my comments should be formatted.
Aaauuuuggghhhh5 -
Omg whhhy do things change so much from Laravel 5.x to 5.4? Tutorials are useless! And Google, I love you, but giving me laravel 4 answers as top results for my query specifying 5.4 is just infuriating!!!2

Online applications are so much worse than the classic snail mail ones, because some companies just don't seem to give a single fuck about the quality of their application application (hehe).
This results in such joyous things like:
• "Allowed file types: doc, docx, pdf, jpg, zip"
• "Max filesize 3mb"
• "One of your files does not meet the requirements" (doesn't tell you which)
• "Upload timed out, please try again"
• 403 forbidden
• "Your account does not have the necessary permissions to upload more than 4 files at once"
• clicking the submit button leads to a 404
• "Please explain why you want to work for us." 500 character limit
• Google forms2 -
The best dev advice that I had was when Google Apps recommended me DevRant, related to the apps I had installed. I learned so much since them.

I am sick and tired of big companies trying to shove their technologies down developer's throat in the name of developer advocacy. Last week I attended one of the IBM workshops which was supposed to be about ML and AI techniques but ended being solely about IBM Cloud (Bluemix), click here, click there, purchase it. I am not against developer advocacy and them trying to advertise their product but they should always keep in mind that developers won't get interested if they aren't learning any transferable core skills.
I was checking a course on Udacity about building scalable java apps. It turned out to be about Google Cloud Platform, auto scaling and nothing much. How deceiving is that?4 -
Warning: long rant
I'm sick and tired of feeling like I'm the only person who cares about their privacy
I try, as much as I can, to avoid surveillance. I use firefox, protonmail, duckduckgo, e2e encrypted chat platforms, avoid social media like the plague, and do everything I can to block facebook and google trackers on websites I visit
And it's exhausting
Each search I make means I waste another 30 seconds because duckduckgo doesn't pull the answer directly from webpages like google does
I get weird looks when I give people a @protonmail email address, and I have to explain what it is to them every fucking time
People ask if I have social media, and I either give them nothing or my Github account
And for what? Nobody else cares, no matter how much I explain how toxic google and facebook are to society.
They just say 'I have nothing to hide' as they scroll Instagram, letting Zuckerberg build an intimately detailed profile on them.
They just say 'so what' as they google memes from their chrome browser, allowing google to share that information with god-knows-who
If everyone else has given up their privacy for convenience, why am I still fighting a losing battle?
It feels like I'm fighting a war against big tech by myself, and I'm tired and about to lay down my arms12 -
"What's my email again?"

Microsoft's business suite is much better than Google's business suite.
If not for Google's monopoly in consumer market, MS would have easily taken over the consumer space as well. No wonder this company is acing their game in B2B space.
I can see myself migrating to MS ecosystem because fuck YouTube and Google Maps. MS has everything better now.
You know what MS did right?
They heard herd.
And this is what annoys me about Google. A company arrogant and adamant in their own approach that they even refuse to acknowledge a user's existence.6 -
Google
I used to be a fan, but recently they really stopped listening to users. No one asked for a wide angle selfie cam. If you give us that huge notch at least provide a FaceID equivalent or something that makes up for the notch.
Remove the headphone jack, cool. But then make the adapter and Bluetooth reliable. Even after a year the adapter isn’t working and the Bluetooth doesn’t connect on the first attempt. Never. The fix is constantly “coming”.
Google copies Apple without thinking. Apple gets away with shit because they provide something in return.
I was an Android user for almost 10 years, and I’ll say this: I bought the iPhone XS (I’m a purist, non-stock OS is a massive no-no) and it’s a much more usable device than the Pixels or other Android devices I used. It’s lacking in a lot of ways, but overall it’s a much better phone.
Google really needs to hire people who understand what people actually want. An amazing camera on its own isn’t enough these days.11 -
FUCKING google doesn't allow our country to buy FUCKING partner or reseller program.
So what the fuck do we do as an agency, we have to fucking treat every domain and google business suites as seperate entities.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THE SHIT WITH THAT?
WE HAVE TO FUCKING KNOW THEIR ADMIN PASSWORD TO FUCKING MANAGE THEIR GOOGLE SUITE ACCOUNTS.
IT IS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE.
I HATE GOOGLE FOR THAT REASON ALONE.
I can care less of how much data you gonna steal from me.4 -

It's sometimes good I work remotely from the rest of my team.... So other can't see how pissed I'm while chatting with them...
Just did an afternoon basically hand holding someone... And well this is the 3rd day... And the original instructions I gave them was: here's the problem, here the code fix, now you need to change it for the other 10 APIs it affects (OS migration).
I have another problem I need to figure out....
Yes I could do it all myself and it would be faster but I don't want to be the only person who can do this stuff either...
But can you just try to use your brain and figure things out before asking how to ....
I don't know am I that much more experienced than everyone else so I just know how to figure things out quickly, know to the learn efficiently? Ask the right questions to Google?
How hard is it to just learn to Google your problems... 80% of the questions u ask me I either tell you to Google it or actually end up googling the answer myself...2 -

I get asked about being able to hack stuff, like cracking wifi passwords. Mostly I just go along with them and make up some stuff about how you _could_ do it. And explain how it is done, throw in some "yeah its tough"s and words they wont understand. Yeah with a dictionary attack and a powerful CPU with many threads you can definitely do it! You should try it! I say. Convincing them they can. Ofcourse, download kain and abel and look for something like aircrackng on google.
They won't amount to much and probably won't even try it, but I have a laugh. Seeing the hope of hacking and cracking fade away as a child's ice cream melting on a hot summer day.

"Firefox quantum is new Google chrome"3 -
frameworks are great and all but it gets much harder to google stuff. a lot of people use php, not that many use cake7

So.....Google Flutter is finally out of beta and ready to go.
Why? Well you see, Google realized that Android development was a complete fucking mess (50+ lines of code to get a permission? Yeah eatadick) and that Fb had it right with React Native which held a better model for building interfaces and manipulating said data. Dart as a language is very nice and for those comming from C#, Java and Js should not pose that much of a hassle.
I love Java, I really do, but Google took care of making Android Java development as tedious as fucking possible with the quirky Android API. Hopefully Flutter will make it better and hopefully Fushia will become a better OS.
Remember, language extensions or frameworks happen for 2 different reasons:
1 the community loves the environment and language enough that they make more cool stuff for it (Js, Ruby, Python etc, this phenomena happens in said ecosystems)
2 the environment is so severly flawed that people add libs to fix it (or extensions to the language if we ate talking about a language)
E.g Android Butterknife, okhttp etc.
I welcome our Dart overlords.10 -
Stay curious and open-minded. If you hear something new take some 5-10 min and Google it. You will surprise much people even if you know just basics.
And if you're a fast learner, be aware, some people will be intimidated and try to oust you. But stay positive! -
Since morning, I’ve used-
Facebook, Instagram,whats app
Google search, chrome, YouTube ,Gmail
iPhone, Apple Music, Apple podcasts
Netflix
Amazon video, kindle
Can’t believe how much our lives revolve around these giants! -
So, the other night I ate too much and it somehow messed up with my nervous system... I spent about 3 or 4 hours being sleepless in bed.. Until I finally decided to ask the all-knowledgeable Google assistant for help. And that's what I got.2
-
TL;DR: Google asked me to PROVIDE a phone number to verify connection from a new device, on the said device.
Yesterdayto log into my work Google account from my personal laptop to check emails, calendars update and so on. I opened up a private navigation window, went to Google sign-in page, entered my credentials, all is well.
Google then decided to "verify it's me" and prompted me to PROVIDE a phone number (work account without work phone means no phone number set up) so that they can send a verification code to the number I just provided to make sure the connection is legit.
Didn't want to do that, clicked "use another method" and got asked to fill the last password I remember, which would be my current password thanks to my trusty password manager. After submitting, I'm prompted with an error saying I have to contact my admin to reset my password because they can't log me in with my CURRENT password.
I ain't gonna do that, so went back to login page, provided my phone number, got the code, filled in the code, next thing I know I'm browsing through my emails.
What the duck? Could have been anybody giving any phone number. So much for extra security.
Also don't care that they have my phone number, the issue is more about the way used to obtain it: locking me out of my account and having no other way of logging in.6 -
Google.
They’re doing amazing things but they are just too big now... Too much of a monopoly and the data is scary too.3 -
You know that you made it as dev when you realize that your creation has ability to effect your life also the life of others
It came to me much earlier in life ( college final semester)
F: Hey there is this girl that i am trying to talk but she never replies me on Facebook i waste to much time looking for her online status , i wish if i can say hi as soon as she comes online
HF: (first reaction) leave her alone man , ( dev reaction) hmm fb probably be using jabber protocol like xmpp I could make xmpp client and sync online status. If status changes drop a notification also the asmack lib provides a way to send msg to user in your chat room sooo we good !!
At the time i was handling 3 android app , implemented this and called it FacebookStalker , you can select who you wanna stalk and what msg you wanna send them as soon as they come online
Google obviously didn’t liked it
for a long time i judged myself that How can i can make this creepy app
Later I realized that it was not the app i was suspended because i used a DRM marked image as icon
Google never tells you the actual reason why your app is suspended so you cannot fix it.
I learned to be mindfull of what i code cause it started having real impact. Loosing dev account was like loosing everything at that point. i had nothing else25 -
I just learnt abt Stadia from Google!
They said “imagine a world where you don’t need expensive gaming hardware to play the next release.”
But my question is “will I need an expensive service to access that?”
Is it gonna be another Netflix thingy for game? For now I’m just thinking abt how much they’d charge for hosting the game on their server, wow.6 -
I don't understand privacy advocators.
Am I the only one who wouldn't give up practicality in exchange for "potentially more secure"?
I don't understand so much what the deal is with people who avoid Facebook, or don't trust Google or Microsoft, just in the basis of "privacy" or "security".
Websites tracking you to serve ads? Well, it's pointless because I very rarely buy something from the internet or let myself be influenced, ads are waste of time, just use an adblocker.
I can pretty much upload my whole life or documents on Google drive, even if I made it public no one would really care or read it all. It's like that GitHub project you uploaded but never documented, so no one cares. I usually use alternative software not because of "privacy" but because it has features other software doesn't have.
In reality you realize people aren't that interested in your life more than their own life.24 -
Me: I have so much to do! How the hell am I going to get all this done?!
**hears someone say something about some framework/library I don't know**
Me: hmmm let me google that real quick then I'll get back to work...
**3 hours later**
Me: damnit! I'm never going to get my work done! -
How did you learn to program ?.
I read E-books to get the basic knowledge and then I would go through a open source PHP project and rebuild it using the look cover right check technique.
Then on top of that I watched YouTube tutorials.
How did you learn ?.
I never went to college or further eduction as I seem to do really well at self teaching plus there is so much info on google nowadays.12 -
Everybody is criticizing Microsoft for leaving too much legacy code in Windows, etc., but let me tell you that I prefer 100% that and have lifetime backward compatibility than having to deal with Google bullshit.
Google sucks ass.
It's one of the most dev unfriendly company on this planet (along with Facebook).
You can't fucking change BASIC stuff in Android SDK every fucking version.
You just can't!
You can't use a system of "PERMISSIONS" each developer has to set in its application and each user has to accept during the installation, that a few versions later become USELESS... because "Hmmm… no, It's not enough, let's make a new privileged permission that makes the old one fucking worthless".
YOU FUCKING, TOXIC, BASTARDS.
It's my app, my code, my device, my fucking conditions. If I want to install viruses on my device, I should be able to do it.
I shouldn't have to call fucking Sundar fucking Pichai fucking CEO of fucking GOOGLE.
USERS != BABIES.
DEVS != CRIMINALS
We are the reason you have a fucking job, fucking food on your fucking table.
I want a fucking GOD_MODE permission in the next SDK, assholes!
You can't REMOVE fucking "Android.OS.getSerial()" making it only for system apps.
It's not sensible data… and if It's in your opinion, you've already created a "android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE", so what else do you want, fucking asshole?
Right, you want to introduce "android.permission.READ_PRIVILIGED_PHONE_STATE" to make obsolete the other one, son of a bitch!
I don't fucking use you're garbage Google Play Store, no worries! I won't upload my app on your servers, bitch!
They've created a monopoly in the industrial space (PDAs) and they keep making fucking wrong decisions every single year.
My job is already stressful, why you can't just stop making it worse? fml8 -
If only we could get errors like this, it would make our life so much easier.
I didn't even have to search Google all I did was use the current version and BOOM!1 -
So enlighten me here. Am I the only one that doesn't lose his absolute shit when it comes to privacy?
I know that some companies are collecting data, and to a certain extent, I'm fine with it as long as the trade-off is good.
I like that Google is "learning" who I am and what I like, cause now, I only see news and articles relevant to my interests, and search predictions are much better. Same with targeted Ads. On an off chance that I'm not using Adblock I like seeing products that I might like, which I otherwise probably wouldn't even know existed.
Except for Microsoft. I have no idea why, but that's where I draw the line.96 -
My man said "What should I return if the True/False field is left blank?"
WHY WOULD A BOOLEAN BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN TRUE OR FALSE???!!!
I'm gonna have an aneurysm. I shouldn't be educating people on best practices for something that's already been written about time and time again. RESTful philosophy has been documented so much, and all it takes is a quick google search, but noooo! I have to take time out of my day as if I'm a regular old stakeholder to explain that I want the exact thing that I sent in an email two weeks ago. Amazing.20 -
So decided 'fuck it lets try the chromium based edge on my PC and Mac...'
And you know fucking what... It is actually fucking awesome, as much as I love Google (Fight me) and dislike Microsoft products, I can honestly recommend the new Edge over Google Chrome or any from of Chromium...

Any Haskell programmers here?
I started to learn this language for fun two days ago and so far I find it absolutely amazing and really different to OOP languages. Most of the time the solutions make so much sense, but actually coding them requires really abstract thinking of the problem. How fast did you learn Haskell? How long it took you do code it comfortably? Any advises you can give me? I work mainly through a uni exercise sheet from a friend from a different uni, and the rest is hoogle and google :P10 -
For my bachelor thesis 3 years ago I wrote a Go/Baduk AI system capable of sharing a problem between an unlimited number of programs to be worked on. 3 years later Google kicked ass using pretty much that method + machine learning. Which is my master's degree... Should have patented it!3

Step 1. Have no dissertation project.
Step 2. Wait for the last 3 hours till the deadline to come up with an idea.
Step 3. Realise that your just-thought-up project idea is something companies like Google and Amazon are still trying to figure out. But there is no time left.
Step 4: Approach your supervisor with the words "Imagine the possibilities". They respond with "Imagine the difficulty".
Step 5: They sign on it regardless since they are curious to see you fuck up with style, also you are too much in love with your idea already, and refuse to drop it.
Step 6: fml4 -
I've been using DDG now for quite a while and as most of you that did too, I enjoyed it for most of the ride, though me and many others that I recommended the duck to, had themselves using the "!g" bang much more than it was worth to be using DDG.
It's amazing for "most" things, like a quick search and especially code related questions, thanks to the stackoverflow embeds, but it still sucks at search results for those other searches.
Just recently I've hit startpage again, they were quite awkward to use imho in the past, but they did an entire redesign and have added advanced options which are nearly non existent in google anymore without knowing the secret konami code to access e.g. "in-title".
So now I am switching between DDG and Startpage and thought I'd share, because finally there's a proper way to ditch google (except if you want some very localized results or use a lot googles in results math {which DDG can too, just not startpage}).
It easily integrates into most browsers too and on android you can just make use of the custom search engine adding in firefox mobile.
Qwant was another option I thought to use, but startpage simply proxies the google results, which were literally the fallback issue for so long - Qwant iirc runs their own and also is often times pretty laggy on mobile from my testing.

I don't get much spam, but when I do, I rant about how badly those mails are crafted.
I mean, yeah, for non-devs or typical old people, those badly made Google fake mails (that use the old Google logo, the logo in Times New Roman or something) or ISP / phone company mails with malicious attachments may look good enough.
But, seriously, if I were a dev paid to create spam mails, they would look like the real deal, if I may say so myself, as I would actually put some effort in them.
What do you think? Wouldn't spam made by real developers like us be "better"?
Maybe send some examples from inside your junk box 🤔3 -
Google search can get fucked in the ass.
Greedy fucking bastards deceptively including ads as normal results.
It used to be just one, but I've seen crazy shit, like 4 ads in one search results. FOUR.
And it's not just the ads. It's all the fucking litter that they put above the results.
I'm talking about all this fucking Google Maps and web cards bullshit.
It takes too much goddamned space, and most of the times I DO NOT GIVE SHITS ABOUT THEM.
And if you want to hide that shit, guess what, you gotta go into the settings. How about you include a fucking corner X that I can click so I can hide immediately hide that shit when I want to?
Now, let's analyze the unholy mess that the image I included is:
The search I did is a simple "html form". Notice that the fucking Adblock is turned ON, yet I still get a "chameleon" ad.
The first real result is from w3schools that also expands on two also hideous things: sitelinks.
Sitelinks are nothing more than spacehogs that I very very rarely click. They look fancy, but they just add CLUTTER.
What are search result n 2 and 3? w3fools again. And I shit you not the next 2 results to those are also w3schools again. So 5 w3fucks links TOTAL.
Wow, google, I'm fucking mindblown, excellent fucking job for a trillion dollar corporation.
Get fucked in the ass.12 -
I start shaking and getting nervous when there is something I really, really want to say.
Today in school we started talking about Amazon Alexa and privacy.
This topic concerns me a lot and I started talking in front of the whole class about Google and things they do to spy on you. After about 30 seconds of me talking I started shaking because there was so much I wanted to say and with so much enthusiasm and also a bit of anger.13 -
Sometimes I just HATE Google.
No, this is NOT because they keep all your data, are evil and all the usual things. I just think they suck, yes there are super cool things and a lot of things are just the best in the field but I just feel like we could do better, there are so many smart people out there I just do not understand why everything is taking so much time.

GOOGLE WANTS TO KILL THE URL..
Umm... that's ok. But I like URL to know where exactly I'm. They should not be very long and should be in the language I can understand.
So hiding rest part of the URL will not impress me much.10 -
Not much of a haxk, just a stupid thing that works.
In my hs videogame programming class, the teacher has this program called LANSchool (most of you have heard of it) which he used to restrict apps/browsers to the point of uselessness . He didn't (and still doesn't) know anything about the stuff he 'teaches', most is tought by TAs.
Here's the dumb part: he WHITELISTED APPS. A friend, one of the TAs, figured out that if you rename something 'Google Chrome', lanschool wouldn't care. So I got Chromium (for unblocked internet) and switched its blue icons in the exe for original chrome icons, then renamed it 'Google Chrime'. Woo.
LANSchool is such a bad program (you can even unblock a site by spamming the F key for refresh).
The teacher did, and still does, treat the TAs like trash. He's a babysitter while students listen to online vids and the TAs.2 -
Google should not have this much control over the damn browser market. I wish Mozilla were more powerful.37

It has given me a great understanding of how important perfection is. At school everyone said, "you spend too much time perfecting everything" or "spread your* effort, rather than spending lots of time on one thing and rushing another." But now, in programming, knowing where to put the time and effort is the most useful skill I could ever need.
Also, I can barely use the mouse correctly anymore, except when playing video games.
*Here, my Google Keyboard suggested: legs, wings, Marmite. 😕1 -
Started my internship web project. Found myself relying a bit too much on stackoverflow and google for backend and frontend help and it's making me feel a bit too guilty. Any advice ?5
-
So Huawei got pretty much nuked by Google.
I wonder if it's going to stick because it would mean they're pretty much out of the smartphone game if I understand it right8 -
Can someone tell me how a mid level developer with a PhD from EU country is unable to work independently, conduct investigation by himself without too much hand-holding?
Is he too allergic to use google search?
Or is it me that have too much expectation? He's been in our team for 3 months, he should be able to search docs/procedure/files by himself now. Is it me that are too workaholic nerdy and he's just a normal person?
🤔
Thankfully he's the nicest person in our team, but I am getting fed up having to answer his questions many times.12 -
I was looking at some info about how much ads pay, CPM and all that, came across a guy who answered a question related to this on quora (FUCK quora piece of shit content farm :/ but that's a story for another day) and put links to his apps on Google Play in it.
I always had low self esteem and think that I know nothing and I'm shit but seriously fact that people who make apps like this exist and are proud of their shit makes me feel better.
His entire collection of apps are garbage like this, like a "driving school" with images from Google Search and other games screenshots and "top 10 search engines" with just logos of search engines. 😂
EDIT: Typos3 -
My first rant here, I just found out about it, I don't have much of programming background, but it always triggeredmy intetest, currently I am learning many tools, my aim is to become a data scientist, I have done SAS, R, Python for it (not proficient yet though), also working on google cloud computing, database resources and going to start Machine Learning (Andrew Ng's Coursera).
Can anybody advice me, Am I doing it right or not.?2 -
Decided it was high time to give windows the boot, other than the very rare gaming I do there seemed to no longer be a valid reason to keep it. So off I went, kubuntu looked nice, but after 2 hours I determined it did not like me much. No matter how much I google, could not find out why it would not pick up sda in the installers drive selection.
So figured, last try, grab the Ubuntu ISO and booted with that, and what do you know, 5 min later I am installing my software....1 -
I *cannot* be the first person in history that wants to do this.
Someone much smarter than must have already done, packaged it and sold distribution rights to the T-shirt.
Time to Google the sh*t out of it... -
My wifi card has been in the bugs section of almost every major Linux distro for the past 4 years since an update. Tried almost every solution i could find. nothing helped. couldn't use it with it's unstable speed and disconnections. So much for open source and GNU/shit and fix it yourself crap. Do you really expect me to learn to write a wifi driver? I'm done with Linux. Installed Windows and everything was fine. open source software may be good but not the best. Much better to use proprietary software than to waste time trying solutions from the seventh page of google search results.12

Google Tag Manager is a complete abomination of UX. The whole concept is just ridiculous, it lacks at least 3 levels of automation. Non-tech people won't be able to use it and for tech people it's laughably inadequate while still being conceptually difficult. A perfect combination of a tool that does too much and too little at the same time.1

First experience with Android: our professor of Software Engineering gave us a project about building an app for University indoor geolocation using BLE beacons.
Just found out that only a few PhD-level dudes did such a thing with much fewer good results.
Sounds like when your average-hedidnotrealizedwhataprogrammeris-friend asks you if you are able to hack Google Chrome.2 -
Just got my first iPhone today. Any idea on how to get rid of these two? Using the Google keyboard and I hate that so much of my screen is occupied by these two6

Recruiters on LinkedIn be like "Yu sim like a fit is much good at in company ours indutri tek AI is startup! Google is invest we money in! Kan we talk is good?"
Seriously, lay down the Google translate. Why even bother recruiting in a language themselves can't understand?2 -
So... Google Chrome on Android got an update (just reset my phone so maybe some funky Google roll out) and... I don't know how I feel...
I love it so much but hate it at the same time...8 -
While on topic of google collecting too much data, is there an chromium like android os, that doesnt spy on its user? Adroidium?13

I changed my default search engine to DDG for some weeks to try something new. Sadly I must say that it isn't for me. At least not in the company I work. Reason is: we use a German CMS with most Forum posts written in German and I noticed really fast that Google just gives me much better results on specific issues.
Are you guys happy with DDG?9 -
I just want to take a moment to appreciate how lovely and non-aggressive the subscription process for a Mozilla dev newsletter is.
They show a list of topics like
- Mozilla tech
- add on mails
etc
Only the dev newsletter is preselected by default and the rest are unsubscribed by default.
So if I just submit, I'll just get dev mails and I can subscribe to the rest only if I want to.
This is so much better than chrome or other Google bullshit where if I subscribe to a dev newsletter I'm automatically subscribed to every single piece of shit mail available.
You go Mozilla. Thanks for not being a piece of shit. -
I have an interview with Google in less than 3 hours. It really sucks because I'm totally not motivated to do it. I didn't study much for the interview, because I recently switched companies and had a lengthy job search. And I finally landed at a decent job that I'm having a great time working for. And to be totally honest, I just have interview fatigue. It started in late May and ended in August. Countless interviews asking the same damn questions just gets exhausting. Too "homework assignments" in addition to my "day job". I'm just burned out on interview hence I just haven't had it in me to really study for a Google interview.5

Classmate ( 7.5+ GPAer, probably 8+ ) asking me (<6 GPAer ), how to fill form of TCS ( IT giant ) for campus placement.
Asked me to choose 3 "Field of interest" for him 😑. I Suggested him options, not of much importance ( IOT and IT were on the list too ). When he asked me what are these, I replied him to search on Google.
His brain thought of asking me first them to google about.
Can't even choose what are his field of interest ....Damn 😑14 -
Nearly same time as the "don't be evil" got removed from google pages, an old internal video leaked about some futuristic concept, where the AI would try to gather as much data as possible from a user and if not possible, suggest devices with discount (e.g. a scale), that can return that data to the AI or if there's no fitting product, just print or make it based on the previously collected data (favorite color, ..) and suggest that to the user to buy, all since google duplex, anything mentioning google has been outscoring the previous idea 😶

Over a year ago I posted a screenshot of chrome vs edge, and chrome had 92 processes consuming 2.1GB RAM vs edges 19 processes consuming 3.2GB RAM
Just seen this... WTF google, how can you need soooo much ram, I thought you had fixed your high memory issues!!!22 -
Client: I want a fixed timescale and cost on this project.
Me: OK, what do you need?
Client: We need to integrate our website with our CRM system, which we're in the middle of rebuilding and don't know what data will be available from it. We also want sophisticated Google maps integration, online sale, digital agreement signing and a customer login section that works as a social network for our clients. And we want it in six months time. And an app. And we want you to pitch for free with some initial design concepts. And we want details of you project management strategy.
Me: Ok... Do you know what you want your app to do?
Client: Yes, it's an app! So how much will this cost me?
Me: D':2 -
I hate AMP sites so much. Fuck you Google! I'm not living in some third world country, nor do I use a decade old smartphone. And even if so, it's none of your fucking business what I do with my bandwidth!!
Just give me the real website, instead of downgraded shit!!1 -
My favorite Android email client just changed its name, and now they want $50.00/year for a subscription. Mmmm mm, not so much. I'm all for supporting starving developers, but that is extreme. I think they will lose their customer base. Guess I'll switch to Google Inbox or Firebird. Meh.4
-
I'm thinking of making a project that will help me during the upcoming school year. Pretty much an assistant that can fetch quick answers from google and a few other basic tasks. What projects have you guys done with your work? P.S. I might want one or two people to also contribute so comment down below if you'd like to help (won't be open source)6

To those who own a huawei
assumind they will remain functioning, just w/o any updates. Do you reckon you'll stay w/ huawei? Or get a new, supported device?
And what if all the google services get cut off later on? How much do you rely on them?10 -
A Bible app for Android called Tour the Bible. It uses the Google maps API to put a pin in each location as you read so you can follow along and virtually "tour" the Bible.
I had a basic version built but then I switched to Kotlin then I pretty much completely rewrote it to use an api for the Bible content instead of plain .txt files. I still try to work on it in my spare time but with a family, full time job, full time school and part time freelancing I don't get much spare time.2 -
When you're an idiot who doesn't know what you're talking about since you've always used Google, and people give you shit for it anyways instead of just being cool about it.
😧🔫
Come on guys. This is ridiculous. My school uses Google services, so I'm pretty much forced into it. I've never really ventured outside of Google because it works just fine. I clearly don't know what I'm talking about. That much is obvious. How about trying to be a good person and help me out instead of talking down to me and --'ing my rants and comments.
This is why humanity is doomed to fail. Half the population is comprised of complete fucking idiots, and the other half is mostly assholes.4 -
Just saying hello. I'm a Google Store chronic downloader and found this. I'm so happy to see so much conversation around coding. I've been learning by myself for 2 months and since then I've been desperate to have someone to talk about programming and stuff. I hope I can learn more and have fun here :)5

** this means words are muted **
Friday:
I send a mail the client a Google doc with elaborate details about evaluation of an Android tablet from a Chinese manufacturer.
Monday:
The client is upset, he says "You say there is no GPS chip on the tablet while the manufacturer says otherwise"
Me- "I have clearly mentioned that it has a GPS chip"
Client- Opens the Google doc, points to a sentence. Looks at me like I did something horrible.
Me - **This guys is either word blind or something else is wrong with him, the line reads 'GPS chip available'**
Me- "Look, it says 'GPS chip available'.
Client- **Blinks n blinks again** "Alright, but why did you share a Google document, why not PDF, docx"
Me-**Politely** "You can download the document in any format, look I will show you..."
Client- "It should have been in the mail itself ideally"
Me- **WTH** "We normally maintain a document for such things to keep everything organised, but if you want I will put everything in mail itself"
Client- "Hmm.. do both from next time"
Me- "Alright" **BS**
Client- "Why is the new feature taking so much time"
Me- "As planned earlier, we going to deliver it tomorrow"
Client- "Why not today??" **Gives a strange look.**
Me thinking - **Enough**
Me- "See, I am trying to integrate a smarten with a socket connection, reading it's data via exposed APIs that are hardly documented, we need faster performance so I need to implement caching, multi threading, offline handling, multiple processes to avoid memory fluctuations, sync adapter to sync data...."
Client- "Ok ok ok, it's fine if you give working build tomorrow"
Me- "Ok, fine"

Fuck these fucking youtube ads! I got blocked on youtube and cant play any video on desktop unless i disable adblocker. Shits so fucking LAME. Fuck off. Switching over to brave browser now and never looking back. Fuck off chrome.
Get fucked google. Now Google dropped to the last place for me from cloud providers. I'll prioritize the pedophille childfucker bill gates Azure cloud over GCP Now! Fuck Off. Shove ur ads into someone elses ass just how bill gates shoves his dick into childrens assholes on the epstein island!
Brave browser found a solution to all this fuckertry! It has built in adblockers for everything including built in vpn IP cloaker trace blocker and so much more for privacy and data integrity. Playing yt videos on brave browser works like a charm with no fucking ads or extensions installed! Everything is the same like chrome including layout development etc, minus ads tracking and data harvesting!
Before:
AWS > GCP > Azure > OCI
After:
AWS > Azure > OCI > GCP
Google ur now worse than a pedophile azure. Deserved to get spot #3 now. Shitheads8 -
Fuck apple, and fuck xcode.
Making and running android app was a breeze.
Making and running ios app was hell.
Expectation : I should have gotten everything I need just by installing xcode and flutter.
Reality : I need to install these from the terminal : xcode command line tools, homebrew, ruby, cocoapods, firebase-cli. Also I need to manually add many stuffs, such as google login url into xcode project settings. Also we can simply test run our app or install to our device, and iphone we owned, we need to register in apple developer program, fill a full form, blah blah blah.
When it comes to android, I only need to register an account much much later, when I want to publish it to the playstore.5 -
When I first started reading about Angular 4 I must admit I was a bit excited. It seemed like it fit the company enterprise requirements. The improvements it offered on paper looked quite good for our use case. HOWEVER... After writing Angular 4 for two weeks I'm seriously doubting I made the right decision. Testing is a dependency hell and there are two ways to build and structure your application. The webpack way and the SystemJS way. The grunt way and the angular-cli way. For fuck sake Google. And the documentation is somewhat half supporting one thing, half supporting another. So when you're using angular-cli with webpack, you're pretty much screwed when we're talking about documentation. It has now taken me almost 50 hours to write a pretty basic Angular app, made it compliant with our staging environment and writing a Makefile for it, since I haven't been able to find any same way to provide custom arguments when building it with the angular-cli --aot option. So fuck you Google. Luckily I've found a way to modularize it so much that I'll be able to reuse the core in the future. So I guess I got that thing going for me, which is nice... -.-' *sigh*

Just went to my accounts in Google. And happen to go across my activity section. I had no fucking idea I was tracked so much! It even lists the app I have opened at particular time. It stores every frigging thing I do with my phone. Goddamnit! Yes, I understand I have agreed to share my information with you. But you just take everything.
Go to myaccount.google.com and head towards the my activity section. You'll know what I'm talking about if you are heavy android user.5 -
PSA Cloudflare had a bug in there system where they were dumping random pieces of memory in the body of HTML responses, things like passwords, API tokens, personal information, chats, hotel bookings, in plain text, unencrypted. Once discovered they were able to fix it pretty quickly, but it could have been out in the wild as early as September of last year. The major issue with this is that many of those results were cached by search engines. The bug itself was discovered when people found this stuff on the google search results page.
It's not quite end of the world, but it's much worse than Heartbleed.
Now excuse me this weekend as I have to go change all of my passwords.3 -
Much as I hate to say it, I'm finding chatgpt useful. Not for writing code. But I can recognise where my colleagues are making mistakes. I don't necessarily know what the mistake is, but I give gpt a description of what they're doing wrong and it can say what the problem is and that gives me something to Google. Searching directly for the description doesn't work too well. Also makes me wonder if search has got worse outside of specific keyword matching.13

So I gave my younger brother my OnePlus One since he is now using an even older Google Nexus and don't care much for phones. The camera is slightly better basically.
Asked him to test drive it:
Me: so did you set it up yet?
B: nope, what's the rush?
Me: well you see it's running a custom OS (Lineage) as it technically doesn't support it. You need to test drive it and make sure it works with your SIM? May need to change some configs
B: sounds like a pain, should I just get a new phone?
Me: ... yes probably...
He's a just graduated CS major that doesn't like tinkering with tech...
(Well can I have it back then so I can play around with it?)9 -
Not a rant, but a question.
Why is their so much fear of Google and Microsoft misusing information they collect?
What proof is there of this (provide references and cases, for a proper argument)?
What would you have these companies do to resolve the issues you brought up above?
I'm sorry if I seem ignorant, I'm genuinely unaware of all this. I'm willing to learn provided it's a fair analysis.7 -
RethinkDB is such a rediculous overengineered BIGGEST BULLSHIT I HAVE EVER UNFORTUNATELY USED.
Does anyone even use this total shit????
This shit eats RAM memory for just 1 CRUD operation as if you opened 10,000 google chrome tabs. Who the fuck thought that kind of technology is a good idea?
Yes it IS very fast, a real time database. But you'd have to have a multi-million dollar supercomputer to be able to handle so much data like a relational database can....5 -
Android Studio is by far worst development environment I've ever seen. Slow as fuck, messed up and cumbersome, not much better than eclipse. Menus are hilariously fucked up. On top of that, clear new setup (on Windows) may as well melt up your PC if you have that shit running overnight: after a weekend I came to the office and my MBP is fucking screaming and breathing hot air... I was WTF is that, and when I logged in, this fucking garbage android studio was taking 100% of all 8/16 cores ... WHAT A FUCKING HIDEOUS PILE OF SHIT FROM GOOGLE. Google: please kill this project, no need to improve or fix it, it's garbage. Start over.26

First time programming for work... Man in the middle student password changes. Yep that's right I'm being asked to write a program that will change students passwords on their Google accounts and local domain while also keeping a decryptable format password in a database. Granted it's much better than not letting students change their passwords at all. Plus were doing it because it will let us fix their issues while their out of school so...8

I have spent 5 days in Microsoft Excel trying to do my budget planner. I struggled a lot and too much Googling. Google started to show reCaptcha whenever I search for something after that.
Yesterday, I spent 3 hours and got my fully functionality web based budget planner done.
I don't know if I did the right thing or not but am really happy and I have the full control. -
So I love how for the last what now, 20 years companies that don't seem to have the most obvious sources of income build huge data servers, and make the general public push to digitization and lack of physical ownership *cough google cough* and then they, after encouraging dependency for storage say 'yeah well, we're going to press the reset button anyone who is being detained for 2 years or so or eating dogshit in the street by deleting all the photos attached to an account that is not logged into for that long'..... seriously.
So I developed a tool to download everything.. a few times now. Why should I have to hop from one foot to the other so much ? Thats what I'm asking.
I tell you, for such a rich company their api's are very poorly documented and there is so much goddamn documentation that is competing with other versions.3 -
Made my own "devRant" ("inspired hehe") Android app/socialmedia^^
(still in BETA) Not targeting a specific area though. http://stardash.de:4000/
And no not a devRant replacement cuzz its not soo much dev Related :)
Layout has no similarities aT aLl :D
App can only be downloaded on my website cuzz im not 18 yet so i cant publish to the playstore (and also i kinda dislike Google and using anything Google connected in a app e.g. Firebase)
There is a build in update center in the app though.
Server:
My Pc (Linux)
Nodejs with Express
Mysql
App:
Android Studio mostly with Retrofit13 -
I sincerely want to thank Google.
I was this introverted guy with lots of questions to ask.
Whenever I try to ask question I could not. It might be - my ass liked the bench too much or gravity was different for me.
Anyway, Thanks google.2 -
I fucking hate apple so goddamn much. They make it next to impossible to connect or reset an old account from 10+ years ago for any modern services unless you are invested in their ecosystem and use it everyday for everything. Have not had any issues with old app accounts connecting through Google. Just sayin10

As soon as curiosity sets in we’re searching on Google or asking our trusted friend Siri for the answer. In the 21st century, it isn’t about how much knowledge you have, but whether you know how to search quickly for the accurate information.
-
Thank you Google, for updating Chrome on my phone without notice in spite of me explicitly disabling automatic updates and me 'not having enough storage space left' for manual updates. It's nice to see you caring about the user so much.
Now if you sucked my dick while you were at it, that would be great.3 -
I know you pals know much more than me about privacy. I have these questions to you all:
- can google still know trends about me if I only use google docs and google drive to store files I share with other people and rarely update it? Let’s say I don’t use google search or any other google service ON REGULAR BASIS
- does chromium actually works as the measure to get rid of google tracking if I don’t want to use Firefox?
- how safe is apple (miss me with that Apple hate)? How bad is the fact that I let apple store my regularly updated health information and I use iPhone?
I’m not talking about triple letters here (FBI, CIA, etc), I’m only talking about collecting and selling data across companies12 -
First job starts in June, so I guess my first rant is that I don't have much to rant about (yet). Time to lurk .-.
P.S: Google why 4 notifications for new device sign-ins :[ -
I hate the current state of internet based service providers. They are collecting so much data, it's scary and borderline stalking.
A simple search on Netflix changes ads shown by Google. I watch a lot of Japanese/Korean drama and now my ads are in Japanese. What the actual fuck.
I run windows 10 on my main rig because of steam and windows only games. One day I was searching for filezilla in windows search. Since it is now handled by the same UI as cortana, it searched it on the web too. So now I have ads related to ftp hosting in Japanese.
Sometimes I feel like just formatting my system and install debian on it. But those games man. May be I can live without them.
Can we bring back the internet from 2008. It was so much better back then.12 -
Funniest Questions ask to Google Assistant
Question: “How old are you?”
Answer: “I was launched in 2016, so I’m still fairly young. But I’ve learned so much! I hope I’m wise beyond my years.”
Question: “Who was your first crush?”
Answer: “Siri.” -
Sometimes I feel like, if anybody would have told me, the real use of GitHub, bitbucket or any other version control systems. Then life would have been much easier.
I remember in my college days, I use to keep the code backup in several different places on my system as well as Google drive and Dropbox..
For working parallely with the team-mate in college means...sharing of changed code..every now and then..via mail😫
Git, bitbucket you're the real MVP. Period.2 -
I just remembered that 2 years ago I found an open-redirect vulnerability in one of Google's old pages.
I decided to not submit it to Google because it's too much effort (even though I knew they pay for these things) and told about it to a friend who deals with these things.
I was SO. DAMN. STUPID.1 -
How hard it is percieved by management to do something in code is proportional to whether or not it's a task that sales or the CEO wants, versus what the developers need. Developers want to rewrite something, or fix infrastructure? Too much work can't justify it. Sales wants to clone Google Search? We'll expect it by next month.1

What the hell is wrong with search engines?
I thought Google had turned to shit. So I decided to get on Duckduckgo as many hyped
It turned out to be way worse. You search for something with a slightly viral keyword, and it only gives you results for the keyword as if you didn't ask it anything else.
Bing is not much better either IMO.
Are we just getting too used to neat answers given by chatGPT, or are the search engines actually being worse this year?6 -
Wtf? Why so much space at Left?

I think that is a wrong padding-left

What's wrong with Google and Facebook selling my data, what are the effects directly affecting me from them selling my data? Why should I care that someone is making money off of something from me that doesn't affect me at all?
Putting so much effort into hiding from those companies has more negative effects then just letting them do what they're doing.58 -
Definitely the first Android app I decided to fork.
It was an open source OTP authenticator which hadn't been actively developed for 2 years at that point. At first I only did some small fixes and minor visual improvements but by now it's evolved into its own project with a lot of contributores and users on both Google Play and F-Droid.
When I started I had no knowledge of Java or Android development what so ever. So it basically forced me to learn lots of new stuff, especially once issues started to come in. By now I learned so much on this project that I'm thinking about re-writing the whole thing from scratch because I question some of the design choices from the original app I forked...

Working with a group on a startup idea. We have weekly Google chat meetings with the full team and sometimes me and the other two founders have side calls. Our group is getting bigger so the weekly is getting longer so the 3 of us were talking about ways to make them more efficient. One was, background distractions like TV, random people talking in bg, kids...
So then yesterday the 3 of us went over a different topic and the guy who had brought up the distraction issue was in the bathroom shaving and trimming nose hairs the whole time. He kept asking questions about the agenda which we all had access to. I shouldn't even care much. I drink through the meetings anyways.2 -
**Wrongly edited last time, made it confusing. Deleted. Posting again. Apologies.**
So, scenario was like, we friends were chatting on WhatsApp and talking about Germany as one of us has shifted there recently. After a 30-40 mins chat, I clicked on Google to search for some company(say 'xyz') .... Now this searching for company and chatting with friends are totally separate events. But when I typed 'xyz' , google suggested "xyz career Germany" and 'xyz Germany glassdoor'.
My question is that is it possible that Google is taking records of what am I typing anywhere(I've android phone) and using that to decide which suggestions should it be showing to me? Or am I thinking too much? 😌9 -

So I coded minesweeper and because I thought it would be fun, I also coded a multiplayer mode. Then I uploaded the code to github. Since this was an Assignment, I wanted to download the zipped code and send it to my teacher. Imagine my surprise, when Chrome told me: Failed - Virus detected. Same with Firefox and Edge. Wow. I didn't think my code was that bad🙃. I then tried to download the release executables I uploaded, expecting for them to fail the test too, but nope, the . exe and the . jar work fine. Google also didn't say much about it. I found a github issue, that talked about a similar problem with the zipped source code, but wasn't much help. What is going on? Anyone have an idea?9

My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8 -
No one loves Java as much as Google and Oracle. They are willing to have a battle in court. Or maybe it is just that $9 billion 😂😂😝
But on a serious note as a former paralegal "I don't think copyright should be applied on a programming language " plus, I feel like even if it is applied... google is using java in it's own way (android) as the courts have stated that you can't copyright a language syntax or API definition. So Google can use the Java langauge syntax and core Java API freely on Android.
I don't know about you but, a lot of clients do bring up their concerns..on what the implications are for them and their company developing mobile apps!!
Any updates? Concerns? Thoughts?3 -
What certifications do you guys have, and which do you recommend having?
I'm currently pursuing AWS Developer Assosiate, and in the future Google certified Android developer and MongoDB developer.
Been thinking about Docker but it costs too much15 -
Ponderings more than a rant.
Can't help but feel that if Google (and other companies with similar ridiculously hard interview experiences) want to keep attracting the best candidates, they'll have to change their approach. I can't be alone in that, surely?
I know a lot of good senior & lead devs through various networks - *really* smart people, definitely way brighter than me, who stay on top of their game, work really well in any team they're a part of and create top-notch, beautiful and well-tested code to do just about anything they set their mind to. A few of them have literally turned around projects on the brink of disaster into massive successes.
Have *any* of them expressed any desire in working for companies like Google? Not one iota, and mainly because of the interview process which has a (deserved) reputation for being unnecessarily long, drawn-out, and full of irrelevant questions and mind games.
20 years ago when working for Google was *the* cool place to be, I could see it. But I really can't see them attracting the cream of the crop all the while they continue to take that approach. The really good devs just have too much choice elsewhere - there's not much reason to bother.5 -
!rant - what is everyone's take on React Native? I've been asked to put together a team to develop an MVP for a client. Rather than pull together an IOS and Android dev I was gonna get a React Native developer.
it's an on-demand service, will be looking to utilise Google Maps API, likely will sit on AWS and will also have a website where people can manage their account.
Given that it's an on-demand service there will also need to be a "user" side to it as well as a "service provider" side.
Do we think React Native is mature enough to handle this? I don't have much / any experience with it, but I'm hearing more and more - "Why don't you use react native?"3 -
1. Learn as much as you can before starting your first serious job. Because once you are in production, you are not as much learning new concepts as you are copy pasting, fixing dead code and getting stressed by deadlines.
2. Aim as far as possible and believe in yourself. Facebook or google might comprise of a billion lines of code, but it's not like you can't understand all of it if you gave it your 100%. Be it a weird but amazing looking design or a simple looking calculator, you can figure it out if you are curious and dedicated enough.
3. Learn to google.
4. Don't let assholes berate you. And you WILL meet a lot of assholes in this field.1 -
Going to put my 2 cents on the Microsoft to use chromium based back ends.
I would personally prefer if Microsoft did a fork of the modules they are using and custom tailor them more, just that way edge will still be what it is but will have a much more matured backend (you can't deny Google has made more progress than Microsoft in this respect).
I agree that it is bad for Microsoft to go to chromium but it's an up hill battle for them to get edge as a legitimate competitor for Firefox and Chrome with as little maturity that it has3 -

HOW THE FUCK IS THIS LEGAL?! This isn't even their fucking research! So much of this was either done decades before they existed, or done by others. In the first place, since when can you patent fucking math?! Sure we haven't seen the full patents but they should focus on specific implementations if anything and the titles clearly do not reflect that.
So much for "don't be evil", fuck Google -
If soundcloud would have a reverse search feature, my life would be much less of a pain.
Also, if soundcloud could return better results than Google:"songName" + soundcloud -
Hehe I'm back peeps 😭 missed this community so much. Hope I can read yall's rants and have a pleasant laugh :3.
Also, I've ripped apart my android app and I'm rewriting it using Flutter. Yes I did that. I don't regret it though. Does Google have more control over me now or less? I have no clue. The whole dynamic vs. Shutdown framework risk benefit balance out I assume.10 -
Maybe I should automate downloading these google spreadsheets... neat there's an api for it, lemme just check the npm (https://npmjs.com/package/...).

Uhhh... fuck no? How about no fucking way? The nerve of these guys! Can you imagine being so up your own ass!? That's like 2kb of shit I care about, and the rest is bloat. Might even have some spyware hidden in there for how much NSA pays them.3 -
I love coding so much that I end up re-inventing the wheel more often than not. Like, I'll see an interesting problem and I'll prefer coding it myself than just google it. That's definitely a form of masochism. 🥺
Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have a 100 other things to do...3 -
I had to make a project for university with a colleague and we shared code through google drive because none of us never used git.
Don't insult me too much please 😂 -
Google is giving Google home for adding action on console without even checking that if it is the same questions that had been submitted by other user
I made 6 Gmail account and created same flash quiz and got 6 Google home and T shirts which cost about 49000 Indian rupees
So why is Google spending too much on just an action?5 -
Got an invite for Google foobar challenge.
Successful completed 2 challenges.
It is so much fun to work on complex problem especially with a time bomb attached to it. -
So, there was this time I was a security intern for google, It was my first day as an intern tho :p and I got a little excited about exploring stuff and all at the workplace. Me having a large appetite was mesmerized by the food supplied over there.
I might have sat approximately 2 hours over there fantasizing about how much could I save over food by eating a lot over here and taking some to home.
Then came the SE/SDE guys over my place and we started discussing how there was a loophole here and how one could exploit it. All were heads over heels how was I making calculations for "my" property. All seemed to be pretty interested except for one guy. This guy was over excited how I was managing this and slacking off over the first day. He happened to be a senior lead architect, turns out he shows too much interest in anything he finds suspicious. This wasn't supposed to be rant, but yeah. My story. -
Where to begin learning about blockchain? (Google searches return way too much information.)
This has been in the back of my head for years now. And with all the attention that crypto currency has been getting lately, reminded me to look into this again.
Note: I don't actually care for cryto currencies, I'm just really curious about blockchain technology.4 -
In the saga of the unnamed SAAS I've talked about before, LOOK AT THEM USER-SESSIONS XD
And this is only from Android-App embeds since web-embed isnt even open to public yet, so no google-crawller false-positives
The country I'm in, has only 8 sessions waayyyy down below so my code isn't messing up the numbers :3
I'm still too much of a bitch to face this product head-on and "launch" it damn this feels good 😤🤘3 -
This story happened to everyone, and i am sure that if i search, i will find dozens of similar stories, but the different here is, i tried, i really tried, in a hundred different ways to achieve my goal !
When you are stuck on a problem, let's say, that you have a program, project, website ... and need to achieve something technically weird (or hard) and need some help to save you time on experimentations. The first thing a lot of people do is : Google.com && put search dorks.
But, at a moment, google gets "dirty", you use it so often that he always think to know better then you what you are looking for.
It reminds of "Ted", the movie (for thows who know it) where they asked : "Hey ! Why does google always suggest us to look for black dicks ??"
It is exactly what happened to me, i got results who doesn't have anything to do with what i was looking for !
You can give it a try now : type "semantic web RDF to RDB"
You won't find anything, except results related to : NOSQL DBs, which is totally annoying.
Something else, i once google swift to get some updates, what results did i got ? Taylor Swift ... (musician)
I often get 2 or 3 results from google, which made me thinking that i somewhat reached the end of internet, or that people are so dumb that i will have spend hours trying to figure my solutions, but, before doing that, other solutions had to be tested.
1- TOR : Google tracks his users and uses its algos and bullshits to return results as close as possible to the user's demand (big fail ...) so how about moving to a different country ? DL TOR browser, open, setup, go to US, open google (got us version YAY !) enter my keywords, and, nothing, still nothing, more results for sure, but nothing related to what i was looking for.
2- VM
Pop a VM, launch TOR, use Hidden mode, delet all cookies and stuff (it is a new VM but who knows).
Use keywords (now in UK). Here they are !! my results !!! i finally found some decent results about my keywords !
But, i have the required knowledge to do this kind of stuff, but how about people who rely heavily on google ? they can't change country, clear everything, trick google to think you are a new user, they have almost biased and flawed results. I tried duckduckgo (i love them) but they are not that efficient.
Google says not to anything evil, but they ARE EVIL, miss guiding people, suggesting corrections who have nothing to do with the keywords, or results totally unrelated in any way to the keywords while results exist in other countries ???
Ever since, i don't pay attention to google at all, and started thinking that google's algos are manipulating people, i don't know if it is done on purpose or not, but the result is the same, people have biased results based on their country, on their tag, on their ID, and the recent keywords.
During that period i was cursing google every funcking day, and i am still doing it, too much trackers, too much manipulation, i will end-up enclosing myself in darknet.4 -
just wondering: how much of your programming / development is based on your memory and how much do you use Google just for a reminder and how much do you ude Google for the entire code?2

Why is it fast to search using Google than to search a file on my computer using Cortana or File explorer and my hard drive is just about 200GB full yet the Internet is far much bigger?3

Its a interview with a senior google software engineer who leaked information about Google's machine learning bias, censorship, hiring practices, and much more. I think that Google's censorship based on the company's own political standing is disgusting. While I do not associate with either political parties (I feel like I don't know enough politics to have an opinion), I do detest any censorship of speech and information. Maybe unbiased search engines like duckduckgo will rise in the future.
p.s. sorry if there's bad formatting, I am on mobile.1 -
Soo... me and my best friend decided to go literally "wherever" by plane for as cheap as we can (<50€ per person for a return ticket) and I am looking for a service that offers a free API to search for plane tickets as it would make my and her life much easier if I could just write a program, let it run on my Raspberry Pi and make it send me an email whenever it finds some cheap tickets. I noticed that Google lets you search for cheap plane tickets, but is there an API (even unofficial) that I could use?1

Android devs, what are your thoughts about the naming conventions google tries to enforce on us, especially with the xmls?
I opened a new project after months of leaving android dev, and thought of trying the basic activity template with name 'myActivity'
On clicking it, a ton of files got created : myActivity, myActivityFragment ,... And in xml the reverse naming notation : activity_my, fragment_my, content_my,...
This naming is uncomfortable .in a large project, activities usually acts as complete modules in which different tasks are handled : logins getting checked, data being cached, database being accessed and much more...
So if my activity 'abc' has a content fragment and a toolbar whose design is in another xml, shouldnt the 3 of them be named like:
abc_activity.xml
abc_activity_fragment.xml
abc_activity_toolbar.xml
And not
activity_abc.xml
fragment_abc.xml
toolbar_abc.xml
??
At the very least , it would look nice since the components that are displayed together will have their files together. And i don't know much about testing, but i believe it would be helpful there too5 -
Few of my frnds are doing a small hardware project , they need to make an android app for that, they arent much of devs and hadnt used an IDE yet.
They downloaded Android Studio and installed it. On trying to start project , an error poped up saying SDK is missing .😑.I have to set the path of sdk for them. After that they tried to start the first project. It worked and after a minute or so everything was done. I just waited for all squiggly lines and red colour in code to disappear , but they didnt. 😶
"Messages" showed lot of errors. I am also a noob so most of them were unfamiliar to me. I was a bit busy and was about to leave, so i couldn't say much to them other than to "google the errors, there will be simple solutions for all ".
My point is, if this is the kind off problem someone faces while starting out in android programming, wont they feel like quitting even before their "hello world" application is done.4 -
It feels that I have my own personal space in the head offices of Google 2TB, Facebook 6TB.....I wish they could have provided that much cloud storage of data for free

Wanna hear a joke?
The google play front page!
Its essetially just a giant ad page. And pretty much consists only of puzzle games and games parents let their children install only for them to shut up.2 -
Given the following:
1) how much we (as a species) relly on google search (or alternatives) to do most of our usual jobs
2) the rate and aggresivity of advertsing that keeps creeping into our lives
I predict that in the following years self-curated and group maintained indexes of search results and popular technical pages will become more and more popular
Something like torrent trackers but specifically for StackOverflow/Reddit-like threads and questions -
Hi all my webdev friends! Question for you, tried google, got propaganda.
Why do front end devs use frameworks like angular or react? I was looking into it, and it looks like html/JavaScript can handle it all. Wouldn't removing them save load time and data overhead? Does it really boost productivity that much?
As a backend dev, it is completely possible I missed something haha.5 -
My OP5 got a system update to Android Oreo today. FUCK YOU Google for removing the cute blob emojis! I'm not using emojis that often, hell I normally wouldn't care at all, but the new ones are so ugly I wanna rip my eyeballs out everytime I see them. I already miss those adorable blobby bastards so much that I'm considering going back to Nougat :(
By the way: hello Devrant and the best wishes for 2018 to everyone!2 -
FUCK FLUTTER!!!
Who the hell wants to learn to program in dart, would rather learn php than learn an inutill, and complicated language that only works under Google frameworks. Also, a flutter app weighs twice as much as a app native and closes all the time. I hate Flutter and its community

Global pandemic is now at least for a month so it’s a good time to start reading about first market movements.
Started to read about how much money facebook, google and other digital companies are loosing right now due to advertising business shrinking and current situation.
Marketing is always dropped first and above companies revenues are mostly from advertising.3 -
Does anyone ever get stuck at a super complex problem and then google it, find it on stackoverflow and then see that it was answered in '08 and just feel like a loser because someone out there knows so much more than you?
Like I'm super thankful for stackoverflow but damn. It makes me feel like such a n00b.3 -
Testing out VR without your own VR equipment is a pain.
The glasses are not much of a problem, since you can first develop using the google cardboard SDK and test it with your phone.
It's the controllers that are a pain to test. Luckily vrtk made something that simulates the controllers, which can be controlled with the keyboard.
The controls are very uncomfortable, this is not their fault; you can't really emulate movement easily with a keyboard. -
5 fucking days of Google search after Google search. Error after fucking error. Deadline getting closer by the fucking minute. teammates interrupting me every 10 minutes over discord asking for help on their fucking part of the project
and it turns out the solution was just one damn line
One fucking line in a forEach to iterate over the model data sending the necessary aspects to the Javascript function to create map pins for the database locations
5 fucking horrible days all amounts to 1 line
Really shows how much I still have to learn. And the yelling at my screen reveals my need to take an anger management class1 -
Why the hell is facebook sdk documentation so fucked up?! It doesnt explain anything! And on top of that google doesnt help much either. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The new NHS contact tracing apps appear to make use of Google Analytics (in the privacy policy section)
https://github.com/nhsx/...
No, I have no idea what's going on here, and considering how much the privacy implications of this app have been discussed this seems like an egregious oversight. I'm not even sure I can summon the effort to properly rant about it.1 -
What was your process to learn to code?
I started out modding Pokemon games for the good old Gameboy Advance around the age of 11. With basic scripts like; walk 3 steps left etc.
After that starten to use Unity 3D (with C#), just copy everything from Google. After a while I could edit some scripts and stuff (painful process...).
I started to do a study Software Engineering, didn't learn that much, just got some errands and little projects from people (the usual, 'oh you can code, I need bla bla) learned pretty much most of my skills there (JavaScript, python, PHP). In the meantime creating games (C#, C++).
Did an internship in game dev. got a job now. Only a bit more that a year from now I have my degree (if everything is going to plan).
That is more or less my process of learning to program. -
I detest using `indexOf` to check if a string contains a substring so much I could write a rant about it.
Or is there a better way? One google search later: ES6 supports `string.prototype.includes`[1]
So moral of the story: Before ranting and using something, bother to look if it is still a problem. They might have fixed it.

starting to learn ruby and found a video on my recommendations "5 ruby pro tips"
Now i begin to ask how much google knows about me2 -
Google.
It’s just gotten to big and just dominates. They make some useful tools, but they just buy other companies to do so. But what is worse, is how much information they have on people, I’m going to be honest that I’m not a fully a privacy person but on how much they use that information for I’ve slowly started leaning away from them. -
Is it all worth it? We feel its freedom, We feel it's just me and my phone or my PC. Is it? Is it that private? That camera you have on your phone, what if someone is watching you right now? That microphone you have, what if someone is listening to you right now? Those stuffs you Google, Those sites you visit, you're tracked, you're tapped. Ohh Incognito, Good Luck, there's no such thing called Incognito. Is it all worth it? In fact you're getting so much out of it. Is it all worth it? Or Am I just too obsessed? Is this Internet really that free?
It's freedom but you're compelled to use. Its freedom!

It's been weeks now since I looked through a language, called S-SIZE, filetype .ssz) that is so little used around (I think it's only used is for a game engine clone called Ikemen) that I can't find much documentation or talk about it on Google.
I'm kinda surprised actually. Is it kind of a common thing to see languages used for a single application?2 -
I used to be a fan of Google designs but that all white shit is just too much, the developer console (aka Play console) is annoying and less organized and blinds my eyes!4

How to manage privacy and online presence?
I've seen the privacy advocacy making its rounds around here lately. The concept of hiding as much info as possible is something I'd like to try, but on the other hand I do want to maintain social media and have an outer presence. Additionally, I do want to use some Google services even if I do move my email (mostly developer related things).
I try and be a fairly social person alongside my introverted dev life, so this has been my dilemma the past few days. I could move to those obscure open source social media sites but that defeats the purpose of being connected with the non-tech people in my life.8 -
So I was asked to delete the previous posts because my friend didn't like having his name published... even though I pointed out that there are 100s of people with the same name.... his doesn't even show up in the first page of Google results...
But anyways, here's the C# app if anyone want's it. Maybe can help me fix some bugs... but I'm pretty much done I think unless I need another WhatsApp bot for some reason... It does what I wanted it to do and I've had my fun.
Although WhatsApp seems smart... after like 1 hour if the other person doesn't respond, the messages seem to go to nowhere... just see 1 check instead of 2.

I’m trying to update a job posting so that it’s not complete BS and deters juniors from applying... but honestly this is so tough... no wonder these posting get so much bs in them...
Maybe devRant community can help be tackle this conundrum.
I am looking for a junior ml engineer. Basically somebody I can offload a bunch of easy menial tasks like “helping data scientists debug their docker containers”, “integrating with 3rd party REST APIs some of our models for governance”, “extend/debug our ci”, “write some preprocessing functions for raw data”. I’m not expecting the person to know any of the tech we are using, but they should at least be competent enough to google what “docker is” or how GitHub actions work. I’ll be reviewing their work anyhow. Also the person should be able to speak to data scientists on topics relating to accuracy metrics and mode inputs/outputs (not so much the deep-end of how the models work).
In my opinion i need either a “mathy person who loves to code” (like me) or a “techy person who’s interested in data science”.
What do you think is a reasonable request for credentials/experience?5 -
🤔 Google is transforming from a free service company to a paid service company with gsuite, youtube tv, google drive premium , YouTube patreon approach, g cloud, selling hardware ... and more
I am a little afraid 😱
Is google transforming to apple like3 -
When I do not have much to do, I like to take a look at apps on Google Play, just see what's out there. Then I start to see the opinions of users and go into anger.
I'm Spanish and I'm sick of all those Spanish-speaking people (mostly latin american... sorry but that's true) who mark only one star and make aggressive comments to developers because the app in question is not available in Spanish.
Seriously, are you stupid or what's wrong with you? If the app is in English, it's free, it's good ... learn English and stop complaining !!
Or better, offer to translate it to reach more people!!
Although this is demanding a lot, since this kind of people don't know neither Spanish grammar nor proper spelling at all.1 -
Need a serious help as I can't find a solution to this. My Google search (homepage + results) changes the language to a regional one on every refresh. I want it back to English, I even changed search language setting and the account language for all apps to english. When it hinted, "some apps don't have the same language" in a toast message, I updated that too.
Now I don't understand what is causing this. Here's what I tried. I reinstalled chrome. Removed all my extensions. Used the chrome malicious software detection. Used a different browser- Edge.
I see this is a problem with my Google account as this only happens after I sign in. The language automatically changes to a random regional language, but the search language settings still show English selected.
I checked all the apps authorized with my account but there's nothing suspicious there.
I added "?hl=en" to the url as a temporary fix but that doesn't really help much if I'm on another device. I also found some video suggesting to add "/ncr" to the url. It somehow fixed this for like 10 secs. and then I refreshed to see- back to the same problem.
I tried looking for similar issues and even asked a question on google forums but no luck. Somehow after an hour of repeating the same process of switching the language in settings, it seemed like it got fixed. Until now, where I logged into another device and the issue is back.
Any help? Please? Thanks. :)1 -
I just realised I have 1TB of MS OneDrive Cloud space lying around unused. DAMNNN!!!
Just yesterday, I was thinking of backing up all my content to cloud (because just in case and past experiences of losing data).
I did a quick fact check and figured that I have ~450 GB of unbacked data.
After quick calculations, I came to a number of how many Google accounts I'll need for 15 GB per account of drive space.
Today, I was playing around with my Microsoft Developer account and saw OneDrive. I thought let's check how much free space does MS Dev subscription offers.
It showed 1024 GB. FUCK! My balls dropped.
Now here's what I did...
I have a local drive of 500 GB, which holds all the unbacked data. Now I setup my local OneDrive there and put everything into OneDrive.
And then, I moved my local Google Drive into OneDrive. A nested setup for important stuff.
So this way, less important stuff is backed up on cloud and accessible everywhere.
And more important stuff gets synced on Google Drive and OneDrive, both.
Did I do the right and sensible thing with this kind of setup?
MS Developer subscription says they expire it in 90 days but until today, they have auto renewed it always.
I still have ~500 GB of space which can be consumed.
Also, overall MS ecosystem seems much better to me than Google. Moreover, MS allows custom domain mapping which Google doesn't.
Let's see how can I entirely migrate to MS ecosystem in near future.18 -
Happy Teacher's Day
Who thought learning would stop after School/College? Have been learning since childhood (though not as much as I should) and it will continue forever. I thank all the Teachers, Class Mates, My Parents, My Brother, My Friends, My Colleagues, My Seniors, My Juniors, My Managers and other Superiors. Everyone contributed their part 🙏🙏🙏
Edit - Totally Forgot Google and Co. Thank you won't suffice
Much more learning to come! Happy Learning :-)4 -
I have done it!
I have discovered my biggest irritant when it comes to the tech world and that is fragmentation and visual disorganisation and once again, Microsoft and Google are the fucking worst for it, all applications have different design languages in play, their OS's are disjointed (Chrome OS shits me just because of how much android is leaking in yet they refuse to use similar navigation and the like)...
Apple did it right, oh we are redesigning our mobile platform and desktop platform at the same time, oh I know! Let's make them follow the same fucking design...
I'm just some random 20 year old and have so many ideas that almost everyone will agree make both teams products so much user appealing -,-8 -
So I have a programming question that has always stopped me from making so much. I wanna make stuff in the terminal like Conways game of life and simple games but I don't know how I would track everything like or how to set up the map/board and how everything moves and just all that.. does that make me a bad programmer? I'm fairly new but still..
And no I dont wanna Google it I'm trying to work on being social even if it's online4 -
Anyone else remember at googles summer of code in 2006-ish google catching heat for hiring strippers to give the male devs lap dances ?
those were they days ! I wanted to work for google so much after that.
we need to bring the debauchery into development lol
notably, google has erased all evidence of that new story now that they have become staffed baby raping, tree hugging, snarky fucking homosexual clowns.
and btw i am an environmentalist and I don';t care if someone is actually gay. I'm also practical and like boobs. unfortunately i don't think thats whats working at google.31 -
Thanks google for making it so fucking damn difficult to authenticate G Apps users and check their groups/org unit. Makes my fucking work so much harder! To make matters worse you decided that that if I want to get the information in a seprate call I have to use a seprate admin account to do it because apparently letting the user see it is to fucking hard.

I'm an idiot, almost
I needed a tablet for uni but I also wanted it to be quite powerful and with an OS I could actually get things done with (this precluded android and iOS)
I also am quite pricacy concerned but I never did much to prevent it
I ended up buying a surface pro, for its weight and power
joined with a mac at home and a google nexus in my hands... my privacy is fucked :)1 -
Best: two actually, a java game that was customizable and had statistics (simples but was great) the other was my first android APP consistent of google maps API and QR code scanner.
Worst: still being made, my first project that consists of doing documentation from scratch about a web app in .net core, and it's giving too much work than it should for a university class project -

Anyone encountered issue with vanishing hdd space on Windows 7 ??
My father has this issue: amount of free and used space doesn't add up to the correct total. The problem slowly but steadily worsens.
I tried to help to the best of my systems knowledge but no cigar.
We checked sizes of everything with windirstat so we are somewhat sure that used space is calculated correctly.
We ran native disk cleaning, the trash is empty and pagefile is set to static size.
Honestly i ran out of ideas, last one is take a peek at the disk in something like gparted but i doubt I'll learn much.
I'm counting someone here will help me...
Google failed me, only devRant can save me now!14 -
Any hardcore vim users out there? In need of help with tabs/panes. I tried some google-fu, but not much help.
I have a kubernetes helper, where I can run a command like :Vikube, and it'll open the result in a new tab. Is there any way I can open the result in a splitpane instead? I've found some ways, but not any good ways :/4 -
I wonder how much traffic Vue cinemas' website gets from web developers searching for "Vue" on Google and clicking on the first link presented.1

I think promoting 'a quick lookup on Google' every single time you need to add something useful into your codebase is a bad mentality. It's the same problem with populating your code with Stackoverflow snippets.
I think this is not a good approach because your code will eventually rot and you won't have full control over your codebase in that you didn't write those parts and you don't fully know what's going on underneath. Then, you will forget about that code. A new feature request will come up and oh no, you will be wrestling with your old code because you just quickly inserted it in there, not fully knowing it under the hood. Hours will be lost on debugging.
I advocate much more the approach of really knowing the language and the solutions you're using, instead of just constantly hacking it with the excuse of "Oh, there's no time to learn everything", "You don't need to know the details" and "This is the real world".
No, this is not a good attitude. With the former approach, you will be much more able to safeguard your code and improve on it, rather than wrestling for hours with it. I think it's important to have as much ownership of your code as possible and depend as little on outside libraries as possible.
Fundamentals first, practicality second.2 -
I knew I wanted to be a dev in 10th grade when my Chem teacher told me about the work environment & pay at Google. When I actually started learning to code, it was so much fun & the whole Google thing just seems like an added perk if I make it there.

Google is known for frequently removing features from its products and services. So much that they have been given the nickname "Gookill".
If only they removed the one feature that deserves to be removed.

Joined a hackathon for an app which requires a server to help parse a few things and send push notifications. Looked up Google push notifications and it seemed decent so I just bookmarked it and left it there for reference during the hackathon. Biiigggg mistake. No idea how to implement the server, couldn't find a tutorial that explains enough for a newbie like me and the Google site didn't help much either. Welp. Google cloud messaging. Never gonna like those words ever.1

Google's fastboot driver is not working since windows' got updated to build 2004. so much time passed (i guess 2 years) but google still don't fix their sick driver and I think they didn't even fucking noticed it. that's all sorry I just wanted type these useless words

Completely fed up today, trying to investigate a memory leak using google chromes profiling tools, first of all all the "documentation" is well out of date so you have to pretty much guess your way through it.
Anyway i start to investigate and it looks like the JS Heap increases in size only after a garbage collection, surely this is the wrong way round or am i just being stupid2 -
Welp, how much longer till someone building some magic to crack any modern encryption in blink of an eye.
...
tl;dr Google claimed it has managed to cut calculation time to 200 seconds from what it says would take a traditional computer 10,000 years to complete.

I pay for Youtube, because I'm a Google music (now youtube music, and much worse than it was) subscriber. Youtube pisses me off because if I curiously watch some video, their algo swoops in and starts recommending videos from r/youseeingthisshit or Craig ferguson clips, or fox news, or pbs kids or some other bullshit I don't want in my feed. The only way to disable algo, as far as I know, is to browse "incognito," which then forces ads on me.
Has newpipe been broken for everybody else for a while too?8 -
Every time I look at the web pack config. I wonder what the fuck does this term mean? Then I need to YouTube the term. Simpely google does not help much
-
Does anyone know if there's a name/term for the common distribution of app ratings that you see for pretty much every app (in the Google play store anyways).
Demonstrated in the pic:4 -
DigitalOcean, really just because of the pricing. I will say though that kubernetes in Google cloud is much better than what DO offers, so if cost wasn't an issue I'd probably prefer it

Why is it that Browsersync works so much faster and cleaner in Chrome then Firefox. I want to dev in Firefox but Chrome is seriously tempting me with it's faster refresh rate with HTML and JS.
Google I want to hate you and dammit sometimes I just can't. 😫3 -
Sure would be nice if Google could give us an API for Play Music much like how Spotify has one... it's really hurting me.1

I've been using Google Photos to serve images for clients E-Mail Templates since its a one time payment and I didnt want to continually pay for a server and storage.
Anyone knows if that violates any Google ToS since i use it pretty much commercially?
I couldnt find anything about that and was thinking about migrating the images to AWS7 -
People replying to a restaurant ad on Facebook asking where the restaurant is located (not related to dev but I built the restaurant's website and have access to Facebook admin stuff). Saying things like "It would be helpful to post the address." Bitch, it would be helpful if your lazy ass could do so much as simply fucking click the Facebook page, visit the website, or just fucking Google the restaurant (it's a very unique name and cuisine, especially for this area) and you'll find the address in a split second. Some people can't do shit if the information isn't shoved in their face in big bold flashing letters... even then I don't have hope for people like this.10
-
Why the fuck is it Impossible to get crisp font rendering on chrome (widows desktop), Firefox looks sooooo much more crispy... Get your shit together Google, also while your at it, catch up to Firefox with WebAssembly loading time.
And Firefox, it would be really nice if you could start supporting brotli compression... Just saying.2 -
I can't wait for the release of Snips Air sometime in 2019 so that I can stop using my Google home. It's not even the privacy concern that bugs me, it's the stupid shit like alarm management. To preface, I've had a Google home since late last year and since I got it the alarms have been nothing but trouble. More than half the time when I ask it when my next alarm is, it will respond with "You have an alarm for Friday at 7pm that is going off right now" (At the time of this response it was Tuesday). Then snoozing sometimes just doesn't work, I told it to snooze for 10 minutes, it worked just fine. Then today I made the mistake of asking it to snooze a second time which responded with "Sure, snoozing for 5 minutes", I wake up 45 minutes later, and ask "Hey Google, when's my next alarm?", it responds "You have an alarm today for 7:00 snoozed until 7:15". I have an exam today so luckily I didn't sleep in too late but againg this isn't the first occurence. To prevent this I normally just have a backup alarm on my phone and the one on my phone will wake me up in case something happens. On top of that though I've had rarer cases where it will delete all my alarms and I'll have to go command by command reminding of each alarm. That's just alarms though, I also have it control several IoT devices, and me having to use IFTTT requires the utmost precision in my phrasing otherwise it won't understand ( although this issue is mainly due to how the assistant service trigger on IFTTT is configured ). It still does much better than Siri ( at least my home can set alarms unlike my mac ), I have yet to try Alexa though. Of course my last problem is the hotword, saying "Hey Google" is much better than "Ok Google" but it's still excessive when I have to repeat it for each individual command. This is why I'm so excited for snips air, a set of devices that look pretty great, hackable, and as a bonus much more private that the current options. I realize that I could get a dev kit or set up snips on a pi but the dev kit isn't exactly visually appealing and I doubt I could get something that looks or functions half decent on the pi.1

stupid docker creators. Why the fuck when something does not work it does no show errors. I had so much anger till idea came to head to ask on google does docker has logs and found it has - docker logs command. And I saw fucking errors and then I knew by them what to fix. Idiots, hide errors when runing docker-compose up, what are they smoking when creating docker.
And even after docker-compose up it showed done !! Done sounds as everthing went without fucking errrors!!!! But when running docker ps there was no such container! Because when running it - it was giving errors.13 -
[googling devRanters before wasting time with Google]
Any of you does know of a cooking app/service where you can input the food that you have, the tools that you have and get back the recipes ordered by, for example, time-to-cook, the cooking difficulty and tastiness (the last one defined as how much of flavoured is the final meal)?14 -
I have so much to rant about... the problem is "everyone I know" knows my nickname. And I'm afraid someday they would google it and find my rants. I need to create another account...5

I just realized while looking to buy a movie on an Android phone and using prime video and get the error message that I can't buy from the app...
This is pretty much saying only Google play store is the only place you can buy anything now... Feels like Apple but...
It's pretty much a monopoly okay and anticompetitive... Feels like it could get seriously sued for this -
What is the name of the technology that your one time passcode is generated on your device instead of being send to your phone?
Is it a variety of 2FA?I try to google it but I am not having much luck.4 -
Google being Google I can't find a bloody answer, how do I decide to what PHP framework to use for a project? It's an ecommerce platform, not much need for scaling, but I can't bloody figure out what framework to use, either way it will mean learning it from scratch4

Google Gemini API for Rest is horrible. I dont know if anyone else feels this way. If you want to know how API References and related documentation SHOULD NEVER BE written that way, go check that out.
No wonder Google's GeminiAI adoption is so much lower.1 -
I don't know much about how search engines works and all that stuffs. I started a Blogspot and tried the Google Console to index my web on Google. But it sucks. I get redirect errors. "Crawled- but not indexed.", "Discovered not crawled". I don't know shit. And every video is just a crap on YouTube. I tried several methods and sometimes I feel like giving up.6

I have an issue that I just can't shake and wondered if anyone had any insight.
I'm currently working for a company that is going through a ruff patch when it comes to google rankings dropping off.
I'm the developer who is rebuilding his sites, I've told him that his site is very flat as in no content and he need to start writing articles within his industry.
No buying strength at all just a catalogue of products categorised.
But the guy doesn't get it and insists in spending money on PPC Google shopping which gets him a 83% bounce rate.
I keep going on and on at him how he is doing to much advertising and not enough content marketing but he just doesn't get it.
What would you do ?.1 -
As much as the build quality and features of Google products are appreciated, how many of you are concerned about the data they collect about users ? Do you guys take steps to avoid such data collection ? Who wins eventually .. convenience or privacy ?1

After going through this stuff here https://github.com/google/grafika , Í really don't know how much noob I am...

Hi,
So I have been using colab for the past 2 years. I liked how without any setup you can use kernels with GPU and TPU with some configuration.
But recently I can't train any model. It always goes runtime error, runtime disconnected, not to mention they have limited their total hours of usage for a day.
I know you are providing everything for free but this is just annoying. I dont mind if google wants to start a subscription plan for colab...its much better for fast prototyping than getting a cloud server from google or aws or anything of such sorts.
I have been trying to train a model with only 3 gigs of data and I cant complete the model, once I change the tab it shows Runtime Disconnected. DAMN it.
Sadly, I am trying not to use colab from now on.
But yeah I am frustrated with colab and their services.3 -
I just disabled 2 recommendation notifications from Google Map and Photos...
My first thought is Google is turning into Facebook. My next read Google knows too much... But what can I do...
It's also very convenient... when it's not data mining the data it stores... -
God damn the android camera 2 API is a giant pain in the ass. First I got it all working on my emulator, then I thought "hey let's set how it looks on my fancy phone!.... Oh... Ok."..
So at much fiddling I managed to merge the Google sample with my requirements and got it working on my phone. Then I'm sitting in the train, fire up the emulator and to my surprise IT STOPPED WORKING ON THE EMULATOR AAARRHH!
anyway, it's working on my device which will suffice for now.
Now I'm trying to chop the video into images and... Wait... Google... What do you mean your don't support the Java media framework?!?
😭😭😢😭😩😩😖😡😡😠😠😠😠 -
Factory Reset my Nexus 6P, can't get Google Assistant -
So I was using the Android O Dev preview and decided the annoying things in it was just too much so I un-enrolled which reset my device, I'm now on Android N and have been for a week or two, everything's up to date and all but holding the home menu gives me the "Now on tap", I've cleared the Google app and services data/cache, swapped the language to English (US) and rebooted a few times but still nothing.
I'm not rooted and my bootloader is locked, I'm in Australia and had access to Google Assistant without any trickery before...
Not too sure what I'm missing and how to enable Assistant? So freaking annoying not having it and stuff, it was so useful and I miss it3 -
"The window screen is the Earth's boundary", said a flat earther using Google Maps.
By the way, they don't zoom it out that much.1 -
why the hell does google keep changing their goddamn interface? they somehow found a way to make it worse. i know i'm late to the party but it just annoys me so much.
i'm switching to yandex.6 -
Well I might be asking too much, but is it possible to get a mentor for free in learning android development and perhaps get help from him/her to land a job?
About me: I'm an undergraduate student, currently unable to get a job because of COVID-19. I have experience in Programming problem solving. I also do android development for about 2 years and have 2 apps published in google play store.rant google android developer internship job mentorship mentor developer course android development android free mentorship4 -
I set the voice password for my Android phone, it asked me to say ok Google three times.
Why can't it allowed me to name my phone ? Like Cindy Cindy Cindy ????? Don't you think that will be much safer and easier? No need to have data connection to unlock. -
Does Google Crawl every website and pages on the internet?
I want to know does google crawler will visit my pages or they only visit few, like I have more than 10 Million pages so how much time it will take approx to index complete pages.4 -
An important query, it would be of great help if someone could help me with this.
I am working on a project which requires real-time updation of content on the client and server- much like evernote or google keep- I should be able to update the server with the changes made to the app and vice versa, real-time.
I have seen sync adapter, but it is asynchronous and thus, non real-time. Other option is using an IntentService, as given on android dev site.
Is there any other thing I can do to achieve the goal?
Thanks in advance -
Finally I got purchased Apple developer program, After fucking three months.

Learn something from Google. -
Does anyone know of some good research papers around NLP AI capable of situational awareness? General conversational awareness... i remember trying cleverbot a few years back and it left much to be desired. Even Google is sub-par when it comes to asking follow-up questions.

good evening i would like to know how google takes how much percentage of admob revenue and does interstitial ads make money when someone watches them without clicking, thanks3
