My employer bought some new 40" 4k displays to the office. The want us to evaluate if they are any good, and if so replace all monitors... No real developers has one, only HR people sitting there with one huge window with office or word open!! It makes me cry! And they will most likely say they are too big!
When everyone left the office I tried one... OMG, i need this in my life! 😍50 -
How the fuck do people have an amazing GitHub profile full of contribution while still working and having a social Life??
Am I missing some secret or trick?
This struggle is real...15 -
age 11: worry about internet people finding me in real life
now: worry about people in real life finding me on the internet11 -
None of these people are real.
The “photos” are generated via neural network.

This should probably be labeled a meme, but I'm going to actually rant about this meme.
People use the term hacker way too frequently. Solving your trashy fucking "Pa$$w0rd123" password and getting access to your Spotify account isn't hacking.
Same douchewaffle probably thinks you could hack a Facebook account in 30 seconds. I fucking hate the way movies have portrayed hacking and created a dramatized bullshit idea for people to believe is real.21 -
WTF Python!!! "Master" and "Slave" perfectly convey the concept. In the English language many words have different meanings based on their context. It's plainly obvious that no allusion to human slavery is meant in the context of software or hardware module relationships. I don't even think it is problematic. The real problem seems to be the people who are taking terms outside their intended space. Why are we linking a scar on human history to terminologies explaining technical relationships?
Then lets also ban 0 and 1 because it can offends non-binary peoples!22 -
Instagram coding pics are so fucking cringe worthy....like for real man. A picture of a simple cpp loop, or averyfuckingbasic Express hello world in some hipster filter with inspirational quotes and everyone looses their shit for it.
Instagram people are so easy.11 -
Life Coach: "I want a website where I can charge $5,000 for 6 weeks of coaching for [weird life problem very few people have or think about].
Me: "That'll be $5,000."
Life Coach: "That's too expensive for a website."
Me (inner voice): "tHaT's ToO eXpEnSiVe FoR a WeBsItE."
Me (real voice): "Consider it not as a cost but as an investment necessary to obtaining your first customer. Once the first customer is realized, you've paid for the website and the future customers will make you profitable.4 -
As I'm a privacy conscious person and people often call me paranoid, i decided to have a look at the definition of paranoia.
Paranoia appearantly consists of:
- having intense fearful/anxious feelings.
- delusional thinking, thinking that things which aren't true are true.
These are the most common symptoms I could find on every health website.
The interesting part is that neither of those things apply to me... (not delusional either, the things I try to protect myself from are quite real)
................🤔30 -
I hate it when people rant that we need to call 'Ctrl, Alt & Delete' for help when we're in problem.
Real geek will use 'Ctrl + Shift + Esc'.11 -
Although I know it's nothing, the irony is real.
My room is connected to the power group together with 5 other people.
Watching a mass surveillance documentary.
Suddenly my power goes out, the rest stays on.
I know it must be a glitch in the newly installed power management system but damn the timing couldn't be better!4 -
I just completed my first real website people will actually use and I'm so proud.
It's a great feeling.14 -
Was asked to check the sales team server as it was running slow.
Apart from redundant processes and users with too much permissions I found a "Cobol" folder under one of the sales team member's home folder.
If it weren't the sales people I would immediately disregard this as trolling but with them it's quite possible that this is a real attempt to learn programming...
...most likely from the facebook ads with the hooded guys that offer to teach you to code in 10 days for $800.5 -
Every day in the office kitchen I find bottles of milk open and left out, in the fridge with no date, and empties everywhere. Yesterday I found 11 open and partially used bottles of milk. I’ve designed this flow chart to help educate people (in a way developers can understand) on how to manage milk which is apparently a real challenge for some.10

Real university assignment:
"Write an AI to win this 2player game, restrictions: you cannot save to a file and every turn is a new run of the program."
And then people ask me why do i keep saying university is useless.27 -
The hour before i downloaded devRant i was a 9gager. Now i think i am devRanter.
Thanks dfox and trogus and all awesome people in this community. I am a fresh meat in dev world and here i learn so much things about real world i cant learn in anywhere. Cheers if you are reading.15 -
I think I'm never laughing again about other people misery.
After this enjoyable rant

I got fucked in the ass:
The meeting got delayed to 2018-03-28
They discarded the prototype
I have to develop this fucking shit practically all alone
I'm so fucking pissed that I scheduled a fucking 3 hours meeting to monday and who dares to fucking go off topic on this meeting is gonna be fucking harassed for real.6 -
So people need to learn how to use a car in a safe manner and without pissing off other users before they get a license and are allowed to actually use one in the real world.
Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish this also applied to computers.2 -
I officially cut ties with all my family.
Shitty, cringy, egoist people to ever exist.
They treat me like shit. Just use me as their slave all the time and when anything goes wrong, blame me for everything.
I consider you all my family now. Though we are virtual friends but you guys are better than real family.24 -
Guy: We should build a Blockchain based review website.
Me: Why does it have to use a Blockchain?
Guy: That way we can verify that only real people are leaving reviews and not bots.
Me: That's not really how Blockchains work.
Guy: Blockchain!5 -
No... No... No!
The game engine is not in charge of code optimisation, if your program runs like ass; it is 99% going to be your fault...
Sick of seeing people judge engines because of the poorly optimised things made in them by half assed developers... Why do the good things never get any attention where the shit gets all of it... Why?!
(Just had someone crack the shits at me because I'm not using a 'real' engine and am not a a 'real' developer because I'm not using unreal... So I'm in a fan-fucking-tastic mood after that :-D)2 -

I don't have any laptop stickers. I don't know if that makes me insane or one of the non-crazy people. I just don't like the idea of turning my laptop into a Nascar of tech companies/frameworks/bad Linux jokes. Not to mention stickers can be a real pain to get off.13

Why is it so important to some people to claim that "HTML and CSS are not programming languages"? I get it, you're a REAL programmer working with arrays, maybe tuples, objects and possibly direct memory management. Who the fuck has a right to call themselves a programmer for writing some brain dead markup or poorly designed selectors, right? Who fucking cares for semantic tags or nested selectors?
Just think for a few seconds about when you were taking your first baby steps to becoming the GOD ROCKING MEMORY HANDLER THAT WRITES _REAL_ CODE that you are today, and how good it felt to be able to create something that appeared on your screen. It felt pretty awesome, yeah?
Now imagine if someone much more experienced than you told you "You're not a real programmer, that is not real programming. You should see what I do, I do real programming".
I think you get it. Why spend your energy spreading bad vibes when you could spend it on something more productive. Like reading up on the new CSS4 specs ;)18 -
Only slightly tech related. So proud of my mom.
Many years ago I helped her create a Facebook account. As it happens with most older people, she started sharing false news that she saw on her network.
So I taught her how to verify. Reverse image search. To google it and if no real news site talked about it, it was fake.
Anyway, she listened and started learning.
Now she is telling people when they are posting something untrue and I even taught her how to report false news posts.1 -
What do you guys think of having a "go anonymous" feature while ranting?
I was thinking when community will go larger and people who know each other in real life, start following each other, then it might become hard for them to rant about stuff or they might become hesitant in rantings.26 -
Why do people talk so much in the real world. I'm okay with yes/no questions. Talking face to face is exhausting for me. Leave me alone. I'm okay with chat too.
Can't tell these to anybody for real tho.
Sighs.7 -

A local television station on the other side of the country has been running my software for about two years now and today I finally went to see them. (and deploy a completely rehauled version)
It was so awesome to see these people in real life for the first time. They were nice and hospitable. I'm really glad my software is contributing to what they are doing :D12 -
In the last project i worked in, the product owner wouldn't treat people as people but as resources.
The problem with that is you just look at people and their work in terms of a checklist and remain blind about real humans face.
She wouldn't understand the challenges of building something with an absolutely new stack which people needed to learn from scratch and put pieces together. She wouldn't be supportive of people trying out things and fail.
One fine day I told her that I was spending too much time on meetings and i should be excluding that time from available sprint timings.. she made me open my calendar in a screenshare session with all team members. Made me go through go through every meeting invite i had on calender and ordered which ones should i be attending from then and which ones i wont. That was insulting. It broke the trust.
I decided to not work with the project. Stopped putting my heart and soul into it and eventually got out of it in a month time.
Don't put your team into a position like this ever. You have to trust them with the problems they face and try to find a solution. Scrutinizing and micro management will always kill the team.1 -
Pet peeve: When people use "Jira" to mean story / task / sprint / epic.
*Real* pet peeve: When people use it with more than one of the above meanings in the same sentence.
"Will we finish this Jira (story) by the time we close the Jira (sprint) on Monday?"
Dude, wtf. I actually have to decode your sentences to figure out what you're on about. Just learn the right terminology. It's not hard.10 -
Welp, I've become a supprter. :)
After a long time of thinking and considering, I think it's the best way to give back to the community. Being part of this community gave me a place I was lacking in the real world: a place to speak with other people about pretty much everything from pets to memes to just basic dev stuff, and more importantly, a place that I felt wanted me here. The community here is kind and just all around cool and I wish to continue to see people enjoy being here as much as i do. :)
Thank you for everything guys!1 -
Think about it:
It wouldn't be a real "bug" if it needed a 200 line fix. These little insects are so tiny they can easily hide even behind a misplaced apostrophe.
(In response to people getting upset about 1 line being enough to fix a 3 day problem)2 -
devrant is the only community that I feel comfortable in.
I've been browsing since 2000 and been in many communities online so far, so that's saying a lot.
I've seen supportive comments towards me and others here, and that really makes me feel less hopeless.
I think the internet in general makes you feel like you're a number. Click the like and the sub button, just be one more in a million.
But here, you matter.
If you try to post something and you are sincere, but humble people will ++ and say nice comments.
If you get upvoted, you can WHO did it and what their online persona looks like.
It feels very organic and personal, which is saying a lot for a place like the internet.
In the standard online experience, people online take advantage of the anonymity to say shit they wouldn't online:
anything, from troll shit to presumptuous comments.
I don't understand how some people can connect being anonymous with denying themselves as moral beings.
Do these people walk around in real life fighting with every person that has an opposite point of view?
There's actual people out there that will read this post and think "what a fucking boy scout".
Sorry for having emotions.
how many fucked up people are there, so that devrant feels like a goddamn mirage?9 -
Not programming relevant.
Humans are assholes. Last week was my birthday. First my mom need to remember my sisters and grandma. Last only send a WhatsApp message for my birthday. Saturday I want to celebrate with some friends. Some didn't respond, one decline because of health issues (was ok). At least 9 people including me. But only after 2.5h (8pm) the designated driver was "tired" and take 3 more people with. So they didn't take a walk or drive by Taxi, but went fucking partying at another place...
Half of family nearly forget my birthday and a bunch of "friends" are real jerks.9 -
The FCC Chairman is going ahead with his plan to repeal net neutrality despite objections from fellow commissioners, the CTO, more than a hundred members of Congress, senators and of course, the people.
What the fuck is wrong with this guy? How far up your own fucking ass does your head have to be to ignore basically everyone's vote against you? What the fuck. This guy is a really piece of fucking work. I hope this bounces back to bite him in the ass real hard.15 -

Here I'm celebrating my birthday away from home doing first job as developer.
I started my journey one year back when i had no knowledge of any programming language except basics of C.
Learnt python, Js and many more things.
Prepared for interview, got selected in first interview.
It's been more than 2 months at the new job.
Really it feels so great to see people using your developed tools in real life.
Hope to be more successful and to contribute more to community. 🤞9 -
I see too many back-end rants against front-ends.
Should we talk about table layouts, malformed html, programatically generated spaghetti wrong markup, css absurd class naming, infinite div wrapping (div-itis), awful usability, poor legibility, terrible typography, wrong color palettes and user-unfriedly design? To name a few horrors i've seen so far.
Some people won't admit that their contempt against HTML and CSS being 'not real code' actually hides their inability or unwillingness to learn it. Or they need the feeling of superiority.11 -
Voice commands are the future!!!! .... God I hope not... Why do people like this obviously inferior interface?
A real conversation with Google assistant while driving, I got a text:
"Read text"
...
"Read text message"
*You have one text message from Dave. Would you like to hear it?*
"... Yes!"
* Hey what's up?*
"Reply"
....
"Reply to text"
*I don't understand*
"Text Dave!!!!"
"Message James using SMS. What's the message?"
GAH!!!!!!!! fuck you Google assistant! This is literally the only thing I use you for, so stop being so fucking bad at it!!!!11 -
2nd day in new job. Random HR training blabbing about something (thanks God all remote so I just did things around house). Blabbing about diversity and other corporate brainwashing. Then she proceeds to say that if someone is introvert and doesn't like to interact with people then such person should look for work in some other company (wtf x1). Next in line her real life story how she yelled at her subordinates (wtf x2 who admits to mobbing xd ) but that's ok because she is choleric and people have to understand that different character types make their team better xD
I have a bad feelings about where this is going...7 -
"It is risky to release an app that depends on APIs that you don't control."
Yeah, dude, we also live in the real world.
Better to say: "Your app should handle cases where the third party API is partially or even totally down."
God, some people, they build a wall of rules around themselves and wonder why their skills don't improve.13 -
Instagram in a nutshell:
1. Posting a meme without real picture
2. Getting likes
3. Comments:
- Bots: "Amazing","Beautiful view!","you wanna see my nudes?😍😍😍❤️❤️💘💘💘💦💦"

4. FOLLOWERS DON'T SEE MY POST BECAUSE INSTAGRAM IS STILL PROUD OF THEIR NON CHRONOLOGIC-FEED!!10 -
Start changing how young people look at programming. It’s not nerds doing nerdy things, it’s about real people using code to solve real problems. I think once the mindset changes it will get many more people interested.6

(internships included as I'm on my first real job)
Best: my current job.
Worst: using Google services at an internship instead of quitting (yes, this is a big deal for me). People call me crazy when they hear that but I've got my fucking ethics/morals/values.
For the record, if I'd have to choose between having an income/using Google services or starving, I'd go for the income part anyways, I don't have a deathwish.13 -
I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!4 -
Another smartass! Here we go!
Look, I'm an idiot and I'm absolutely aware of it. But you don't get to give an opinion without having the knowledge or skills. I may be young-ish and stupid, but that doesn't mean you're right, or that you know better than me ffs. If I'm down to earth, that doesn't mean you're above me. If you want my respect, then behave yourself. Just because you think you've "schooled me"...doesn't mean you did.
... Aaaaaand those are stuff I'll never say in real life. Gah. I can't lecture people I don't care about, but some do piss me off regardless. And what is with this sharp increase of people pissing me off these day? 🤔 🤔 🤔5 -
wild people somewhere with real high end laptop (it's apple, so we can tell by looking at it?) :"am developing a website..."
.... "develop" a website... using wordpress?
i think these days people have confuse the term develop and design.....5 -
I've been working in a company for two tears, builsing it from ground up as a CTO with a CEO and COO. Two years in, with 60 people on board I was managing a project which was bringing serious profit into the company, and they decided to cut me off. Reason: they don't trust me anymore, real reason: CEO wanted more money for himself and less money control from me and the other guy.
Turned out fine as it made me start my own business.1 -

Wish I could be Geralt in real life. Fighting ghouls, slaying griffins, brewing potions, repairing swords, helping people, getting laid and roaming across seeing wonders of nature.
Instead I'm here fighting with QA's, squashing bugs, brewing tea, wasting hours in stand-up, pulling my hairs out and finally trying to stay sane in an insane world 😐14 -
“You’ll be working in a fast-paced environment…” ALWAYS means “We’re incompetent, we don’t realize it, we don’t hire enough people to spread out the workload, we don’t have a real process, and we’ll blame you, the new guy, the first time something goes wrong.”4

I'm so fucking upset with this shitty iPhone. I can't believe there are people who are actually *paying* real money for this crap. Thankfully I am getting paid to use one, otherwise I would flush it in the toilet (but then even the toilet would reject it).9

So I trolled one of my co-workers who has an iPhone saying "Buy a real phone" .. and now people are picking that around the office and throwing it at everyone who uses Apple products .. "buy a real laptop".. etc3

i HATE snake oil idiot types
red flags:
- "interested" in tech but have no programming experience or knowledge, no real work experience
- they claim they can provide assistance and guidance to people in machine learning!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
- private instagram, weird
- spent all their money on their instagram profile picture, looks like those dumb finance gurus with a lambo
- is, in reality, unemployed
what value do you provide to society?
really its just people who are good at talking and can convince other people of equal or lower (not higher) intelligence but not really can't DO anything
and they wonder why so many companies fail
what a fucking joke i hate you
its really not just annoying its immoral - and thats the part i despise so much

Am I the only one who doesn't understand apple card? Like really, it's just the worst pitch ever!
"Apple card. Made by apple. Not a bank" that's a REAL ad I saw today. Why would you trust APPLE more than an FDIC insured bank with decades or (in some select cases) CENTURIES of experience in finance?
"No more card numbers and CVV"
Cool. I get it. Card numbers get leaked and stolen. But that's why banks insure cards and reverse fradulant transactions. How an I'm supposed to use it on Amazon?! I'm sure they have an answer. Like maybe one time use generated cards. But they haven't advertised it yet, and that's a problem!
Why do they think people want this!? And even more so, because I've seen some people are excited: WHY DO PEOPLE WANT THIS?! why is apple trying to make everything?!15 -
Jesus Christ Almighty fucking Instagram is a real shit show lately.
So many fucking bots. The porn bots than spam comments and DMs, the bots people tag in comments that get you a lot of likes and then just people that use bots to comment on posts.
Like fucking hell bruh can y'all fix your shit?7 -
Just saw a job ad for a company they were asking for one developer they wanted software developer x 7 and senior developer x 2.
How cheap is that? If you want to hire people do so but don't bundle them up, the description for what is required is funny too, I love how companies don't even know any standard way of asking for a specific role just blurt you need this this and this senior is that plus knows how to lead, cool.
Is this really a real requirement: "Visual Studio experience"?
Or is this just some piss take?2 -
Coming up to (very) tight deadline..
Manager - "Stick in a temporary fix, if the data is mocked out it will do for the demo. We really want to show this feature."
Me - "Okay, I"ll pick up the technical debt after the demo."
*Changes are coded and rolled out*
Manager calls me over to his desk..
Manager - "This feature isn't bringing back real data."
Do these kind of people exist in all companies?2 -
Today on forgotten movies – Chronicle.
A very grim, very dark movie about accidental superpowers discovery, but with some school-shooter vibes.
Don't you find it predictable how in regular movies a hero saves the world against all odds in the very last moment? Well, forget about it here – this movie is not "cinematic" at all, and that's what I like about it.
A horror in regular movies doesn't usually scare because the image itself is too perfect – you don't usually see the world like this. It doesn't seem real, that's the problem. By adopting the "found footage" screen language, Chronicle delivers the horror perfectly, because the world in it seems perfectly real, just like you see it through obscure youtube videos named MOV_0115 or IMG1014.
I like it that the characters actually look like real people, not like stereotypical superheroes and not even like enhanced versions of people that try to sell you an idea of what "success" looks like.
People in the movie also act real. They're weak, they're scared, they're irrational, and you really start to believe that yeah, this is what probably gonna happen when a human faces something as unbearable as superpowers discovery. And, as weird as it sounds, the superpower itself also looks totally real – raw, unpolished, uncontrollable force that requires getting used to and probably is too much for a regular human. Definitely not a perfect, tailored thing that turns anyone into Mary Sue.
Overall, this movie is the most immersive one I've ever seen. If you want to see what would really happen if you discover a superpower, this movie is for you.4 -

Felt like a real badass in middle school when I made my first .bat script that would recursively open itself. Took only two words. Four if you wanted exponential recursion rather than linear. And I came up with it by myself.
Cheesiest thing ever, but I really loved freaking people out by opening it and just watch windows grind to a halt as it would run out of ram opening thousands of terminal windows. Hell, it still gives me a kick today when I show it to people the first time :D7 -

To all the people who constantly complain about devRant not being good enough…
First off, who the fuck cares? I mean honestly, does anyone give a fuck? People have been saying for YEARS that they hate devrant and that it needs to change in whatever fucked up dev idea way that we all think the world should actually work. The real fun is how this platform evolves into different phases over time. The fun is interacting with devs anonymously talking about really anything. It doesn’t matter - as long as it’s interesting or entertaining it’s fine. Don’t fucking pretend that you are a goddamn professional elitist asshole bc we all know everyone here is weird and stupid.8 -

Shaving with an old-style safety razor just rocks - that metal thing consisting of three pieces where a slotted, double edged razor blade fits in. With the good Russian Astra Platinum blades at 10 cent per piece where a hundred piece pack lasts for years. The whole thing can be fully dismantled and cleaned.
I can't understand why people use this modern overpriced Gillette shit at 2 EUR per piece that you can't even clean, with debris stuck in-between that starts to rot if you use the blade block more than once. Must be brainwashing by ads. Even worse for women who pay 50% extra for the pink version of that unhygienic shit.
Oh, and real shaving soap with a real shaving brush and not the canned aerosol garbage that doesn't really work anyway.8 -
We are probably reading alot of "this co-worker was so bad because blah blah blah..." from people who actualy were the real shitty co-worker and are still blaming others for his/hers mistakes.

HR: "People you got to keep believing in the software so we can succeed. You look like a pack of beaten dogs who have given up the fight".

An online community I've been part of for years has seen a lot of popularity/hate overnight due to a new policy. The influx of new people who want nothing to do with us but just drop by to troll and be cunts is impressive. Also, a significant amount of bots. I want my online home back :( I'm for the new policy and very much against these new clowns who don't really have any reason to be on our page. Before anyone yells gatekeeping, it's a site about knitting and crochet. Why would you go there if you don't know either craft and have no desire to learn or talk about those? So disappointed. I hope it brought new crafters in and that the trolls will go away soon. It's been such a nice place for so long with barely any idiots because it was reasonably small.. And now look at this mess. I logged in to 20 friend requests from people I don't know and am almost certain aren't real people.
Why is it so hard for humans to accept that some people may disagree with them and that's okay?16 -
Does anyone else here hate people who use numpy panda and tensorflow and call themselves data scientists ??
Cuz I hate 'em. There are so many researchers who work day and night to figure out the math and algos which go into these libraries. These researchers are real data scientists.
If computerss sciemce would have been a religion, then just using these stupid libraries and claiming you are a data scientist would be blasphemy.7 -
Zero Days documentary about stuxnet malware features a "identity protected" NSA employee who reveals information about classified NSA tactics.
She claims "I would NEVER compromise ongoing operations in the field."
Well it's too bad that Amazon Prime Video and IMDB don't share your values. They have compromised your name, Joanne Tucker, and the other films you were in.
Nice acting though. You really have people believing you were a real source!15 -
Dev ducks. I don't have one, but I'll get one.
I've always talked to the people around me when I was debugging but now it's time to talk to a "real" duck.2 -
How fucking stupid can people actually be?!
So a Swiss ISP called "Swisscom" is giving out a Picasso, like the real thing for you to keep at home for a few days or so... and they built sensors into the Frame... AND THEY HAVE A FUCKING PICTURE OF THE GPS SENSOR IN THE VIDEO! Thats not the worst... why not OPEN UP THE FRAME AND STEAL THE PICTURE?!5 -
Ya sure 0-2 yes experience with all those requirements + 5 more items hidden cuz of my tiny screen.
What is even more interesting they would like that person to know Swift UI.... It's not even out of beta ....
Also must know C#? For real... Those people do xamarine and native projects and they r not even a software company, they sepcialize in architecture
I hate it when people do this, like take the best at lowest price, that poor Dev is busting his ass to get your job done and you take the profit and give him the remaining change?
Hope this world doesn't get worse than it is....
By the way, job is for Full stack iOS developer 🙄17 -
Why do business and systems analyst even project managers try to give estimates for how long development should and will take? I hate how people who don't code and do any real work try totell me how long it would take me.4
-
i dislike the people that dont take mental illnesses seriously. its a serious thing and they don’t think its a real thing because they havent been through it.3

CTO for the picture.
This is so real, people are having a bad time because of the covid-19, productivity could be affected by this, my colleagues are having a hard time since they cant realy separate work from work anymore, the situation is hard as it is, i hope we all get through this.
Please Give Loving Comments below so i can show this to my dev/non dev friends that are having a hard time.11 -
Oops, looks like "Benedict Cumberbatch" just broke your unrealistic design specs and spotlights your non-inclusive cognitive bias, designer. Maybe stop using "John Smith" as mock design data for users' names and design things for real people.
Developers should not be paying down your design debts. Fix this!
Sincerely, the UI developer doing your job6 -
Thought I would only do frontend-stuff when I started working. Boy I was wrong. I thought it would be easy coding in a real company and not just in schoolprojects, boy I was way out in the blue. But when your code works and is actually used by people, I never could've imagined that would feel so good!4

In an art school. 3 years into our artistic degree. They decided to teach us web development. Me coming from a background of web though that this was going to be easy.
Little did I know that I'll see a new perspective of web design. These people, many of whom do not know of flat design, are actually making real shit that looks gorgeous! I love my classmates! -
CppCon2017 is COMING guys!! All these crazy speakers and conference! I won't say their names because they are too many x) But... FUCK ! That's the only moment I wish I lived in USA... No streaming, can't go... Only one thing to do, wait the upload on YouTube...
When I see people hyped about GoT or whatever... Guys this is the REAL HYPE!!!4 -
As much fun it is to code and create new features for users. Take a break from the computer and spend time with real people.
A few years ago I would stay at work to get tasks done. While everyone in the office would go home I would stay and finish some task. After doing that for a few months my wife started to yell at me.
It made me realize that no matter how important a new feature, a bug or optimizing code is family and the relationships you have are more important.4 -
I don't get much spam, but when I do, I rant about how badly those mails are crafted.
I mean, yeah, for non-devs or typical old people, those badly made Google fake mails (that use the old Google logo, the logo in Times New Roman or something) or ISP / phone company mails with malicious attachments may look good enough.
But, seriously, if I were a dev paid to create spam mails, they would look like the real deal, if I may say so myself, as I would actually put some effort in them.
What do you think? Wouldn't spam made by real developers like us be "better"?
Maybe send some examples from inside your junk box 🤔3 -
Yesterday all management was sick or away on vacation or training.
All work continued as normal. Everyone is an adult and knows what to do.
Made me question if we actually need to have soooo many people in management positions.
Funny to think that they get paid more.
Ironically when a developer is sick, real money is lost and progress stops in a particular area.
🤔1 -
idk when I became so jaded, but I don't have the patience to deal with a specific kind of people. the kind that are spoiled, are too "nice", in that very corporate way, speak in that nonsense business language, and they all look the same (white, well dressed, plain). the kind of people that consider making slides real work 🙄
sigh... maybe it's a prejudice of mine, but ffs... those people are fake af, and i have zero tolerance for work politics6 -

Anyone else who can't focus while listening to music? I can't grasp how that's not annoying to people.
The sound of silence.
For real, the best coding flows happen then.
If there is something that I can hear and process, my train of thought behaves like a dream behaves when you wake up in the morning.
Even worse are children, humming, whistling or munching as the ONLY sound in that silence, Im scorching inside when that happens.
If I can't be somewhere silent (preferably completely), I block the distractions with binaural beats and/or sound of rain.26 -
I love how CS universities teach stuff like every student there is going to create a programming language from scratch, but none of the real world stuff. Then people get surprised that bootcamp students get promotions twice as fast.14
-
I really don't mind it as long as the work is on track but damn it hurts to read the git commit messages with messed up spellings. In some cases it's not just that, but variable names, file names, etc. as well.
English isn't the first language in my country and a lot of people are not as proficient with it so it's probably not appropriate to judge, but the cringe is real.
Sometimes I wonder if I am that cringeworthy person to someone else.3 -
You will think you are having a bad day, until you come on devRant and read so real shit happening to people.
And, I honestly do find most of the rants here to be fucking hilarious.
I know and understand that these are real frustrations people are going through; but bitch, can I laugh if I find your rant funny? And use some symbols too?10 -
I don't think the Internet became toxic because of anonymity like all those people claimed post-90s
I think it became toxic because normal people with their real life cultures found it and brought their real life cultural norms onto it
I've been thinking why are video games communities so much more holistic than other types of communities
the last few years this is becoming less and less the case, however
and now even games suck.
games now, instead of their old cultures, are becoming derivative plain cultures
everything has to be easy, meaningless, shallow
everybody has to follow the meta or people rage at you with their entitlements to your behaviour
it's exactly like real life!

In the news today, a city in Lebanon fell victim to some sort of explosion, which was captured by hundreds of civilians via cell phone recording.
In other news today, millions of people learned Lebanon is a real place.2 -
School's intro to computers, when I was 12, was the formal beginning. But I think the real start was before then; learning how to give people an order/direction they can't possibly fuck up.6

not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.
we are all in it for fun!1 -
wk142: geekiest non-dev activity
Definitely music production. Especially when using real instruments and capture their audio, so everything is quantized (i.e. fixed to time grid) and very tightly recorded. I make metal, 'tis a precise genre. For one riff it sometimes take 20 takes, since I record 4 times my guitar.
I've learned for the past 10 years how to compose, mix, masterize, but also learned how to sing, learned how to play the guitar, learned how to compose drums and using my keyboard to play drums (people are often surprised I can play double kicks @ 230 bpm) so that I can have a basic drum layer to further edit
Pretty geeky, not a common subject I talk to people about :D2 -
Very soon I am going to do the following things,
- leave the working and high paying world
- build another startup from scratch
- jump into a very new and controversial industry
- fight against extreme misinformation and prejudice in the above industry
- build some amazing technology that I hope will actually help people
- finally, publicly be my real and genuine self
I am both very frightened and very excited.
Trending more and more toward excited every day.
Can you relate to that? Then let’s chat on the comments!8 -
!(isRant(thisPost));
Submitted my third pull request today in just a couple months as an intern, got told I'm doing a great job and already being considered to move to a more in depth dev team. Honestly a dream come true. Great company, great people, and I have a solid shot at a REAL full time dev position after college. I'm so happy man all that work finally paying off. -
We have gotten an email saying we need to use our Teams channel to place our food orders less. A random colleague then goes to the local supermarket and buys the food orders. This group chat has around 15 people that often need something from there. If you don't need it, you ignore the channel.
So we need to use it less. So we follow the orders and now we privately message everyone for their orders. Talk about a real "time gain" :D2 -
I honestly don't understand people who genuinely believe formal schooling will cover all the basics they need to know to do a real-life job, and still get barely passing grades on all relevant subjects.
I genuinely don't understand people who copy GitHub projects to pass classes, and graduate from a university with goddamn StackOverflow instead of a brain.
Whom I understand even less are people who don't do anything major-related on their spare time.
I mean, change your fucking major, do what you actually like, do things that actually light your nuts with passion.
Please don't waste my time pretending you are in it not just because it's potentially well-paid and "cool".
Please don't waste my time being my coworker.
Yes, I'm looking at you, trendy wanker with a CS degree and no personal projects.
P.S. Junior here. Yes, I'm full of hatred for all the "real programmers" in the industry out there. I hoped for a better experience.
P.S.S. I mean absolutely no offense to people using either GitHub or StackOverflow outside of the aforementioned context.10 -
Waiting for Apple to deprecate their iOS Safari and finally let people install real alternative browsers on their iPhones. Suckfari does not support aspect-ratio either, coincidentally spend hours to find that, now struggling with 100vh and -webkit-fill-available.
Microsoft at least left the choice to install something else besides Internet Explorer before they finally pulled the plug and provided Chromium Edge. Safari isn't the new Internet Explorer, it's worse.6 -
When people say that Gen Z is fucked, I used to scoff at them thinking it's not that bad as they make it out to be.
But I've witnessed it first hand now, it's real. Totally real. I only spoke about my salaries in my resume video and people are actually thanking me for telling the truth.
They're soooo used to getting told lies to, that someone even speaking a little bit truth is mind blowing to them. It breaks my heart, honestly.3 -
I am working on a project which I want to make open source. The problem is, I have never launched any open source project and I do not know any platform to reach people (I am not talking about hosting the project, I am talking about making people know, use and take part in the project). I believe this project will help a lot of people who works on IoT, chat services or distributed real time servers.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.8 -
I finally made my first production-level bugfix at my new job! 😄 After weeks of training and then being assigned a live bug, I resolved it quickly & elegantly, which helps prove my worth to the team.
Man, it's so gratifying to be making contributions that are going to affect real devices that actual people are using. It seems being a dev with a sense of purpose is nearly as important as enjoying what you do. ☺️ -
Remember my friends
Fuck 2019. I still have one photo of 1/1/2019 on my instagram profile as my first photo with hopes to achieve what i was planning to achieve. But life happened. Things went wrong. Murphy's fucking law took over. Fuck you

Anyone else starting to perceive real life and communicating with people using logical gate thinking?
I think I need vacation because communicating with non tech/code savy people requires an effort..1 -
Getting real tired of people posting meetings only for you to join when they end. How hard is it to have you meeting at the time you set it for? Holy shit!1
-
Just figured out that while I was on vacation they made a really well thought (not) decision to switch to Firebase despite having 4 fully managed VPS with low usage.
Wanna know what the big deal is?
The only one who looks like knows anything is the fucking intern.
I was trying to understand the thought process and everything revolved around "its real time" argument.
No one knows how the api really works, the benefits of "real time" , and we are using the free plan :)
Yeah... People really do overthink things here... -
Why would anyone use -1 for true and 0 for false in a database.
Booleans people!!! FFS
Making migration of old project a real PITA4 -
Whatever works that you can get people to work with.
I can’t remember the number of times I’ve warned management against using fancy ass tools only to find out that there literally are no devs on the market who work with it outside fancy ass startups.
Reality is real for a reason.2 -
I never liked Facebook. I only use it to get posts from the pages on architecture. Yeah, i wanted to be an architect 😅. But after a week of getting into coding, i flipping fell in love with this too. After, i found devrant, i thank god that it exists. Facebook is for people ranting about what their relatives are liking or hating or what, people they don't know, are doing. That's not real. What you guys, the community so wonderful rants about everyday, is the real stuff. I love devrant. I love to code.
Chalo(is about the same as saying,"I'm out"), Good Night peeps 😴.I'm high on sleep.
P.S. didn't proof read the above because high on sleep2 -
I wonder if there are more real developers or fake ones? Maybe even? Too many people stick their nose where they shouldn't be and create too many problems for people who actually work and do something.3

I get really fucking mad, when people show termux and boast about "aai yuse leenox"
Use the real god damn GNU/Linux. If it is not available for your device then PORT IT! Like i did..11 -
Linkedin is known from displaying invasive corporate advertisements like join our cloud, and other picture title shit.
But it got worse.
From January I am invaded by contribute to this article crap and get some badge. Powered by some artificial intelligence shit.
From about a month or so I am seeing lots of suggestions on linkedin wall that look like content written by bots, and the posts are from real people, well morons from FAANG started showing up with their generated spam but that’s not all.
This week I started getting job offers that look like are written by chatgpt and not a real people. When I reply to this offer that it looks like it’s not from real person I am ghosted.
Those job offers are like 3 a day and I those are not only contacts but mostly a direct messages from premium account that costs 1000$ per month or more.
I feel like I’m in real world matrix.
But that’s not all.
I see lots of recriuters from my contact list are getting fired and looking for new job.
But that’s not all bitches !!!
I sometimes reply to some CEO and they delete posts and invite me to contacts just to ghost me.
I feel so disconnected I started to think all those people are all only bots and I am last living - real person that is not using AI to write something.
I think microsoft finally managed to kill this cash cow with their obsession about AI. Corporate shit is killing every good platform.
Hope for fediverse to take off with some news websites thinking about integration with fediverse.
Help me obi P2P nobi you’re my last torrent hope.
If p2p social networks won’t take off now it would be dead end.9 -
Dear BOSE, how can you make a "smart" speaker so dumb and complicated? Why require to use an app that needs frequent updates and takes up so much storage space for ... what exactly?
Dear Spotify, why not add features to the web player if your app does not run on older devices? Which native feature would your app need that is missing on iOS 13?
Dear companies making money due to the fact that some real artists make real music that real people love to listen to, how come your apps and gadgets always make me nostalgic about actual records and make me tune in to an actual radio station at the end of the day? At least you keep showing us not to rely on digital technology and rather go visit actual live concerts to listen to live music in the real world more often!2 -
as you can see my naive people; even dfox/trogus started to question whether or not they have done the right thing by chasing a degree that has no value in the real world. just understand that when you see someone who works at a job, he works there not because he has a degree but because he has the knowledge and skills to get the work done4
-
If people would change their name in real life like here on devRant I would be maximally irritated!!1
-
Hating on {LIBRARY} and telling people they are not real developers because they use {LIBRARY} = never cool10

48 boolean variables.
For real?
It's clear why the class name is "GameHardActivity", this certainly is hard to maintain, understand, edit, and believe.
I can understand people learning, but with 2 years of experience in programming??? And there's a matrix right in the middle!!!! USE ARRAYS, PLEASE!!!!9 -
Yeah, handouts create lazy people I'm not impressed with
You want something in life, then why don't you go and get it?
Actions speak louder than words do, it's pretty quiet, isn't it?
Look at the world we live in, defined by comment sections
Surround yourself with people that challenge how you think
Not people that nod their head and act like they agree
Those people will cut you open just to watch you bleed
Always be yourself, not the person that you pretend to be, no!
These people gon' tell you that you will never make it
Then when you do, they gon' say they knew you were goin' places
That's just how it works, next thing you know you'll be overrated
Hearing people say they miss the "old you, " it's crazy, ain't it?
And perfect people don't exist, so don't pretend to be one
I don't need pats on the back from people for my achievements
When I die I wanna know that I lived for a reason
Anyone can take your life, but not what you believe in, no
Just remember this
Yeah, don't take opinions from people that won't listen to yours
If money's where you find happiness, you'll always be poor
If you don't like the job you have, then what do you do it for?
The cure to pain isn't something you buy at liquor stores, nah
The real you is not defined by the size of your office
The real you is who you are when ain't nobody watchin'
You spend your whole life worried about what's in your wallet
For what? That money won't show up in your coffin, woo!
Yeah, anger's a liar, he ain't got no respect
I fell in love with my pain and I slept with my regrets
Happiness saw it happen, maybe that's why she up and left
Joy called me a cheater, said she ain't coming back
I've always had a problem with relationships
But that's what happens when you see the world through a broken lens
Mistakes can make you grow, that doesn't mean you're friends
Who you are is up to you, don't leave it up to them, no
Just remember this
Yeah, they say you got into music, you signed up to be hated
That's kinda weird cause I don't remember signing my name up
Coming from people that give advice but never take none
I like my privacy, but, lately, I feel it's invaded
I heard that life's too short, don't let it pass you by
We waste a lot of time crying over wasted time
It's not about what people think, it's how you feel inside
My biggest failures in life are knowing I never tried, woo!
I look at the world from a different angle
People change, even Satan used to be an angel
Think twice before you're bitin' on the hand that made you
Don't believe what you believe just 'cause that's how they raised you
Think your own thoughts, don't let them do it for you
Say you want a drink, don't wait for people to pour it on you
Cut out the liars, stay close to the people you know are loyal
Grab your own glass and fill it, don't let your fear destroy you, woo!2 -
Most commerce site are actually disgusting with how much screen real estate taken up by navbars and useless options.
People visit for the content and products yet they make it so hard to fucking use. Those sites deserve a lack of online sales.1 -
I’ve never bothered to try Linux as past experiences with it is not as amazing as people say. What advantages does Linux have to Windows? And it terms of real life usage, such as developing software or websites for a local company, why choose Linux over Windows when the majority of the companies users would use Windows anyway?
All I can think is that I should have a computer specifically for Linux so I can still test things on a Windows computer.19 -
Focus on projects, not tests.
If you want people to be able to code, judge them by their ability to code.
Plus that way your graduates have a portfolio as opposed to a grade list that says nothing about their usefulness in the market.
If you must do tests, at least mimic real world conditions:
- Digital, no paper
- Internet allowed (have rules on copying SO if you must)
- BYOD, let people work in their customised environment -
Help me out,
Being a front end dev I suck at back end. I can do some stuff but some of the concepts and other things I really struggle to grasp.
Sometimes when I’m real clueless or have no idea how to do a task the best thing to do is ask one of the senior roles but whenever I ask him he rolls his eyes and huffs and puffs. I get it dev is quite a independent thing and you should do research etc. But it makes me feel so bad and I suck as if I don’t get the question he asked correct or I don’t understand he gets real impatient. I really do try I don’t want people to do it for me of course so I want to to understand but I just get moaned at. What do I do???4 -
My workplace is a generally nice place, but there is a lot of gossiping and complaining. Voices carry and we have a lot of people coming through, so there’s a risk that if people are gossiping, other people could end up overhearing colleagues talking about them or someone they know. It doesn’t help that some of our employees work all of their time in the office (including me) and the others come and go, which I think creates an in-group and an out-group. When gossip comes up, or the urge to gossip, it’s tough to be as empathetic if you don’t have a real in-person relationship and primarily interact with someone over email.
I am a good listener and generally want to hear people out, but there is so much potential for problems when people are talking harshly about others. Could you give me some advice about how to politely shut it down when people are gossiping to me?
In particular, I’m interested in knowing how to shut it down if the gossiper is senior to me, versus a peer, or versus junior to me. Also, should I handle it any differently if I agree with the comments being made or if I don’t? What if the person is sharing something confidential that I know they shouldn’t be talking about? And does it make any difference if the information is work-related or not?3 -
...Sometimes as I read rants or comments, I look at the author’s avatar and I try to imagine how the person look like in real life... By some people I would be quite curious how they look like in real... Haha 😄😄😄14

People sound like they hate their jobs here. What's your favorite part of being a dev? I like the idea of turning an idea into a real thing3
-
why do all of you get so hyped when you install arch linux? you guys sound like the type of people who jack off to arch lmao. lets keep it real tonight, some of you legit ejaculate fantasizing about arch linux like "ohh archh mm 💦💦 ohh tmux 💦 i3💦💦💦linux baby give me more👅💦"
maybe even cool hackermans who brag about installing arch wanna use it for hacking. r u a better hackerman now that u use arch linux ?10 -
I'm too young to have taken my last job...
Enough with the jokes. I have been networking with a lot of people through the years of working at companies and that paid off.
When people trust you for your knowledge, then it's normal to attract business offers. Also, you can partner up with people. That's how my last job started and is still going. At a previous company, I interviewed a guy who had the skills and motive to replace me, but he didn't get the job cause my boss was stupid (he was lucky not to work there, for real).
After I left, he called me to offer me a partnership. One year later and we are killing it, became good friends too.rant partnerships even friendships out of nowhere stupid bosses everywhere networking is important wk77 -
So here I am trying to Code a Rick Astley video on my website so 2 people can watch it in real-time but the code KEEPS DOING THE PART THAT I SPECIFICALLY TOLD IT NOT TO DO UNTIL I GET THE TIME FROM THE GOD DAMN DATABASE!!!!1

What really grind my gears?
People telling you to get ”a real job", because they can make a website with WordPress without needing any education or scam-diploma(read: proof of education)... -
I wish real world would have breakpoints and we could just go back to fix those bugs.
What is wrong with people... Trump, Munich, Ansbach, Nice, Brexit, Orlando... so many bugs to find...3 -
Made a game, it was like tetris but you had to connect at least 3 blocks of the same colour.
I worked on it for like a month, about 50h overall, and it was downloaded by 10-11 people all over the world and then removed after like an year or so for no real reason.
I then stopped making games.
I was too depressed by the whole thing3 -
Why do people hate wordpress so much? It honestly fucks me off the amount of hate it gets and I honestly get a little triggered when people give me the "aww people who use Wordpress aren't real web devs" comment? Like fuck off i use Wordpress to make using a site more easy for my clients you daft cunt. 😩23

I made this site which is nice. Its a nice project plus I made this for my own. So I decided to book a domain for it.
Turns out every possible name is booked and it started pissing me off. I mean how positive people are for startups.
They made this a real-state business. Saw land acquire it. You never know which one will be next facebook ha!
Then I hit git.com which was parked too. I thought god bless you and your money.2 -
Pretty much after couple of years of entering the real world I lost faith, not because I found myself not able to cope and learn but the amount of chaos and closed minded people that you face everyday pushed me to pursue my MBA.
Now I'm slowly drifting away to the management part because I've had enough with this, its just not worth it. I'll keep development for self entertainment in personal projects, and nothing more. -
I know this is utopic, but I've been thinking for a while now about starting an open source platform for figuring out the problems of our society and finding real world, applicable, open source solutions for them.
To give you some more details, the platform should have two interfaces:
- one for people involved in researching, compiling issues into smaller, concrete chunks that can be tackled in the real world, discuss and try to find workable solutions for the issues and so on
- one for the general public to search through the database of issues, become aware of the problems and follow progress on the issues that people started working on
Of course, anyone can join the platform, both as an observer (and have the ability to follow issues they find interesting) and/or contributor (and actually work with the community to make the world a better place in any way they can).
Each area of expertise would have some people that will manage the smaller communities that would build around issues, much like people already do in the open source community, managing teams to focus on the important thins for each issue. (I haven't found a solution for big egos getting in the way yet, but it would be nice if the people involved would focus on fixing stuff in stead of debating about tabs vs spaces, if you know what I mean).
The goal of this project would be to bring together as many people from all kind of fields to actually try to fix this broken society.
It would be even better if it attracted people with money and access to resources (one example off the top of my head being people like Elon Musk) that could help implement the solutions proposed by the community without expecting to gain profit off of it (profit is also acceptable if it is made in a considerate, fair and helpful way, but would not be promoted on the platform).
The whole thing would be voluntary work; no salary, no other commitment than the personal pledge that once someone chooses to tackle something, he/she will also see it trough (or at least do his/her best).
The platform would be something like a mix of real time communication, issue tracker, project management tool and publishing platform.
I don't yet have all the details for how it should all fit together, but if there is something that I would like to start, this is definitely it!
PS: I don't think I can ever do something like this by myself, and I don't really have the time to manage a community of developers to start work on it right now. But if you guys think something like this is something worth your time, I will make time and at least start on defining the architecture and try to turn this into a real project.
If enough people are interested, I will drop any other side projects and do my best to get this into the world!
Thank you for reading :)6 -
Happy New year
May you have a year that is filled with love and bugs, laughter and debugging , brightness and dark theme , hope and distro hopping and little less windows vs linux shit 😂 please arch guys you too 🙄😝
Wish you all a great year 😅😛
I rarely post anything but I'm pretty active reading every shit post here. we fucking have a great community here. Few people are going through some real shit , hey you, things will get better don't lose hope but don't just wait on it , things don't ever get better by just wishing. Do what has to be done no matter how hard that decision can be.
Cut all those toxic people from your life doesn't matter who they're. You all deserve better
Believe in yourself. Everyone is going through some real shit. Keep fighting. Live for yourself.
You got only one life live upto your fill potential.
Regret is the worst thing so do whatever the fuck you want to do.
Never give up doesn't matter what you're going through.
And in the end may you "live" all the days of your life. -
How does it feel attending conferences? (Good ones!)
Here in my country we don't have that many good ones they are all just some show offs talking about how they hacked their way through. But when I see videos for big conferences with thousands of people it makes me feel a bit jealous and sad that I can't attend those where you'll get real achievers (~_~)
Why did I have to be born here like this FUCK 3rd world countries.2 -
A VR/AR OS, with gesture recognition and virtual tools, to substitute workstations.
Imagine painting a picture in a AR canvas, for example.
Or using photoshop in VR for a distraction free enviroment. For coding, I would want to use a real keyboard, of course, but I would use virtual screens for everything.
The possibilities are endless, but people would probably use it mostly for porn, obviously. -
Why do people get an idea that Ctrl+Alt+[character] is a good combination for keyboard shortcuts? Just because your keyboard layout doesn't have a special character for Ctrl+Alt+Z, it doesn't mean other people don't! Did you ever stop to think that more than half buttons on your keyboard already have a Ctrl+Alt (~AltGr) binding, so maybe, just fucking maybe, other keyboard layouts could have that kind of bindings for other buttons as well? You've got 38 published works, you boast your years of experience, yet you can't fucking consider some basic real-world problems when working on a piece of software!
God I fucking hate people like these, with their PhDs and no actual hands-on experience, they're always so smug about their work and expect you to pay them millions, but fail to understand that details like those are why people pick you instead of some cheap student, and that's where their salary comes from.7 -
1. Windows is unreliable and crappy.(I have had a lot of bad experience with windows.)
2. Mac is good but doesn't have a lot of things to tinker with.(Used mac, it runs on specific hardware only, for rich people who don't know how to use computers or for chad programmers )
3. Linux is the best. (The real programmer shit that has it all.)
What do you think?40 -
GitHub needs an offline option. Why can't we manage meta information like pull requests and projects in a decentralized repository style but instead we seem to have to use a real-time UI in the browser that fails when there is no internet eventually.
How do people manage to work with GitHub day to day when there are power outages or when they're on a train crossing areas with no internet connection?21 -
I'm unironically VERY excited. In the last month, TWO real people, both of them into devops according to their profiles, have begun watching avtomat (https://github.com/Liebranca/...), and yes I WILL continue spamming the link if this keeps up. Would you like me to stop? Then give me a dislike and tit-slap the "unsubscribe" button NOW to end my suffering!4

I hate it when we have weeks of planing, i know that it is important in soft eng but yet it is too long. I rather get a prototype, test it and get real results instead of daily brainstormings based on theories.
People need to grow guts and test !2 -
Lot of people asking my real Identity 🙄 Let's see who can figure out my real name. There are couple exceptions who already know me. So please don't comment if you already know. 😅12

Had a nightmare last night where I was called in to do a coding challenge against two other people...on a whiteboard only and no Google or StackOverflow. I couldn't even get one line of code written. The other two guys got a bunch. Too bad one of my real life projects has a lot in common with this nightmare.

Today we got our first real contract for my software company. It fills me with the most confidence as I scroll this feed of people having the same issues as we do. Customers wanting more than was agreed, customers expecting us to know what they want before talking to us etc... Thank you devRant!

Im curious to know how people organise their workspace on windows.
I learned coding with linux.
I scored my first real job and they use mac. All good.
But at home i game and sometimes i feel like coding/gaming at the same time. But fark i hate the terminal.
How do you make it more ho my zsh/ linux terminal comfortable?6 -
I can't believe it is real: I just had to talk someone out of calling a navigation point "FAQ User"
Had to admit I'm from Germany and so was the client. It's quiet common people pronounce FAQ as fuck here3 -
I was always fascinated by Silicon Valley(the real place), it seemed like a dream workplace. But ever since I've watched Silicon Valley(the show), I have lost my faith in the place. I used to be amazed by the big people in tech, but now all that's left is skepticism.
Is it really like that in real?4 -
Anyone else think the emphasis on scaling is misplaced?
I think we can have more innovative products that solve real problems in specific ways if people focused on solving specific problems rather than targeting wider audience in attempt to sell to as many as possible.24 -
I swear business people are so stupid. They take us off of a real priority programming project and then tell us to stop and send emails to gather reporting data.
I am a developer...not an email jockey. Get someone with a business degree and nothing better to do to do this shit. -

People keep telling me that fullstack/web/mobile isn't real programming, and only "heavy" stuff like OS/Performence/libraries & SDK/Malware is "real".
I think they are just assholes. But these stuff are cooler than building a CRUD app.

Right now everything is a CMS. And I hate it. It lets people who don't know what they're doing, think they know what they're doing and make a mess for the real developers.
All I can hope for us some huge educational effort so that if you want to use WordPress you can, but know that there are much better options.

1. Make it so IT teams are only directly managed by people who know their shit about IT
2. Make nvidia opensourxe their linux driver, so we can have some real improvements
3. Make me able to rm -fr people and tasks from the command line.3 -
And there are still people saying that stack overflow is the best site to ask questions. Interestingly, when you do a question, you get criticize for the title given to the question and they don't give you a real answer. And what about people that comment on your question, saying you that they don't understand the question??? Clearer than so what do you want ??? A pinch in the ass???? FUCK ALL THIS SHIT1

So got into a small debate (actually a civil one, surprise surprise) about the final project for a class. Basically the final project involves a team of 3-4 coders making a website for an actual client that either they find or provided by the professor.
The exact point of conflict was that the work is pro bono. The student argued that the work should be paid since after all, real work, real client. My argument is that because the clients don’t exactly choose the designers (or have little to no knowledge of most of their work) there will be high variance in quality and contract work would cause more conflict if done in class.
So just wondering, what do people think about this? Logistical issues aside (earning money for technically school property/ownership and money for learning essentially)6 -
guide to make successful software house company for future me:
1.find shortest domain name with code / star / best / it / super / ai / - whatever banger word you find
2. parse companies work board / linkedin jobs
3. parse people profiles
4. setup email server and create fake linkedin profiles that match jobs and candidates so company looks big
5. fake c-level management so company looks big
6. spam likes and create posts generated by ai from multiple profiles
7. spam invitations to people that match job descriptions and to people working within companies posting jobs
8. offer fake candidates that match job description
9. find real but less promising candidates and offer them the job
10. tell that fake candidate is no longer available but you have someone better

So I found a bug in Azure's alerting platform that means we cannot use response time as a condition.
A month down the line after having raised a support ticket, recreated the bug multiple times in different resources, being told a fix had been made, bouncing emails around to supervisors and having the case moved to other people they finally have come back to me saying they have the real fix.
Done with it4 -
People in this discussion will refer to my classmates doing their project we were allowed to choose like 3 months ago and back then I already told them they won't ever manage to make it work in time.
People: "yo could you help real fast"
Me: "aaah not again but okay why not"
People: "here's the code"
Me: "the fuck is this? What is it supposed to do?"
People: "ummm it should doooo eeeerrr... Like this and .... Yeah we don't know. The output should look like that but it doesn't"
Me: "the fuck did you even try to do. That'll never work. And I told you the same thing like 3 months ago when you just chose the project. Just go and use some random math lib you find"
People: "kkkk"
Their code seriously made no sense at all. Parsing substring within like 5 nested loops and like 20vars called "s1" and "theString" and what not. -
OK I'm getting real tired of people posting stuff about Net Neutrality on here, as we all know about it at this point.
The one thing that gets me more angry is that these people get it wrong.
People look at this Net Neutrality thing and instantly think: "Oh, well, I would have to pay more. That's bad."
What it really is is that your ISP can see what you have been searching and would be allowed to send that information to a third party, or change the speed of your internet if you search something their sponsors don't like.
This is what you should be worried about. Your privacy, not your wallet.5 -
Do you know what is both a good and a bad thing about old tech like IRC ? vs Slack, Twitter, Facebook, Email, etc for socializing ?
excepting that they were recording most channels traffic with bots, you could miss things.
things changed.
it was more living you expected people to be there to have real conversations. and then the conversations unless fragments were saved, disappeared on there own.
it made you have to remember things.1 -
just a thought : the advancement in AI is going to result in a lot of porn and fetishes reaching an even higher audience. comparing the advancements in generations :
gen x :
- porn is limited to magazines and comics
- people are crazy about sex but only in their homes
gen y :
- porn as an industry gets established. a few companies with good money starts hiring people and create porn as content.
- the governments are sceptical and puts lots of regulations in this industry resulting in those japenese sensored porns and porn being shared like drugs in market (secretively)
- only the curious people are able to get access porn with lots of hardwork
gen z/curren5 gen :
- porn as a concept is still a taboo in religions and general public , but government is lineant and does not /could not stop its distribution
- porn accessible to anyone with an internet
- content creation no longer a high investment business, lots of small companies and even individuals become content creators
- rule 34 flourishes resulting in a lot of fetishes . wherever there is an idea, there maybe some content creator making a video, comic or art on that idea.
next gen :
- AI creates realistic porn on any idea. the access to such ai models becomes cheap . thus anyone who is a consumer can become a producer, resulting in even more content generation
- since ai can use non real people to make porn, the stigma around porn reduces and mature content gets more mainstream ( r rated movies getting family friendly ratings)
- rise of hate porn, deep fakes, resulting in either the concept of hate porn getting less audience , or direct decrease of extroverted professions ( no real actors/actresses to shoot movies)
just some thoughts around porn lol11 -
Hello guys!
Some context: our subject thesis is: "Benchmarking of IoT OS". We decided to narrow down the subject to a benchmarking of real-time OS. Examples of RTOS: Contiki, RIOT, ...
As there are no such papers on the subject out there, we are looking for some people/communities that could help us answer our questions.
Thank you for your time!1 -
I was going to rant today about lack of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in some developers, this rant was based on the interviews I have seen flop over the years.
But then, as I am typing it, people in my office start having this exact conversation. We get together and discuss it and in the end we come to the same conclusion as my rant.
Now it feels like a waste to rant about something on the internet when I got to have a real in-person discussion about it.
It’s like devRant in real life!

The outcome of the offline chat...
- Have a cultural policy that is strictly NO ASSHOLES
- Watch for people who are nasty on the internet, especially LinkedIn
- Be careful with people who have a lot of questions for you but answer your questions with “we are in stealth mode” or something similar
- There is no point in wasting your time on these folks in an interview, just politely conclude it as fast as you can and move on -
Not sure if other programming languages class a Boolean as an integer value buuuuuuut...
The amount of times I've seen people do code such as...
if(value == true) {
variable = "blah blah";
} else if(value == false) {
variable = "blah";
}
Instead of doing a simple 1D array and going...
variable = strings[value];
It drives me crazy, such a small thing that has no real benefit but... Ugh... Whyyyyyyy3 -
Don't have a cs degree, when I was in college I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I got an bachelor's in math figuring that would open a lot of doors. Did a boot camp after college to test the waters and found out i had a real passion for engineering. 2 years later I am teaching people with Masters in cs how to get shit done at my job. Morale of the story, your education in the theoretical doesn't mean shit when it's time to get practical work done.

I see a lot of people complain about uni degrees and stuff because they don't learn how to code etc. Is this really the standard?
I mean I'm only in fourth semester bachelor and had coding knowledge before starting uni. But we had basic to intermediate java in the first two semester, now learning how to write secure code and OS-Level stuff in C++, we had a module with practical Assembly coding all while still learning all the theory.
At the end of the first semester we had to write a terminal game in Java. I mean of course that's not "real experience" but if you dive in you definitely learn the basics you need to get started in real life.
Or am I wrong completely / just in a weird uni?6 -
My biggest insecurity is that people will one day find out that I am not good enough!
I write clean code and do all the shit around it but I don't feel good enough.

People that say shit like "real fans know that *their opinion* is true" or "anyone that knows anything about x knows that *their opinion* is true" are some of the worst people in society.

To create a native CLI application for Linux, windows and Mac using C or just use C# and tell people to use mono... These are the real questions that I can't tell if I'm too lazy to ask myself properly...9

I regularly get added by unknown people on telegram. Now, sometimes they're real people asking you to rate some hotels or put smth in a shopping basket in a specific webshop.
It's my hobby to figure out what their scam is. (I think just not paying, how would they do that anyway).
Also, you've bots. Doing acquisition and then ask you to contact them on a different number. I do this. Yolo. For fun.
But now, there's a Chinese girl that added me and I can't figure out if she's a bot or real. She did ask me to contact on a different number - like bot.. But she goes to sleep on Hong Kong timezones and I've let her tell me what was in a youtube video. She described well. Still, I don't trust.
She does have some inconsistenties in dot usage at end of sentence and stuff.
English, quite well but I think she uses translator if she's real. She said it's not her native language.
It drives me totally crazy not being able to figure out.
What are more ways to check if AI?23 -

QA people hurt my head. "I found this issue" cool write it up. Proceeds to not write it up. "Hey this isn't working" yeah your on the wrong PR. For the 80th time. "Hey I just found out 4 days after deploying this key feature is no longer working" did . . . did you test it? I'm irritated. Probably because all of my tickets got sent to triage because I pushed them to the wrong PR. My life hurts. The burn out is real.

Get a bachelors degree or higher from a decent uni or college. It's gives you a solid foundation teaching you stuff that you wouldn't otherwise spend time on because frankly it's shit boring. Like compiler technology and low-level programming languages. I believe this broader understanding which eventually allows you to become a better developer and architect.
Yes, the first year at a real job will teach you a ton more relevant stuff than 3 years at uni. But that's just not what it's about. Ignorant people just think it is.5 -
Tried to boot ReactOS on real hardware.
ALL the driver issues, and no way to fix them (USB had drivers assigned but only had power, not even my mouse worked.)
God I wish ReactOS was laughed at less. There's so much here that could grow into a full Windows replacement, but people are too busy laughing to help.
It's like comparing Windows 2.x to Windows 7 or 10. There's something there, it's just not progressed far enough to get up to where it could be. (Not literally ofc, metaphorically)2 -

THING 1: What's JTAG debugging
THING 2: No just debug using the software.

Am I too dumb if I do not understand good-first-issues on open source projects? I mean, I completed C++ Primer book. Tried to find a real world challenges to use my knowledge.
I look at those issues but I really can understand em, when they belong to a project with tens of modules etc. Maybe good-first-issue is for people who spends 20 hours just to understand project, before writing a single line of code.3 -
Is there a service, or forum, where you can ask people to try to break into your software for free?

Hi. I'm a recent senior dev and for a long time, even before reaching senior, I'm always being overloaded with questions and meets everytime. People asking why are the services returning error (when they could at least make the first analysis and give it to me), asking me to join meets for whatever the reason, people asking how to configure environments, interns asking for help, HR asking for interns feedback. So much workload I can't even focus on the actual developments. Is this the real meaning of a senior dev? Or is this just bad management and bad company culture?7

A self rant here.
I have noticed how much ever you think of UX by yourself and try to think u are a genius for coming up with it, users are going to shit over your idea anyways.
I recently thought of this genius idea of forcing users to put their "Full Name", cause it elevates the gaming experience, as it's a group party game. For that I thought of adding two boxes: "Full Name" and "Nickname". So users will be forced to put a silly name in the nickname box but in full name they would add their real name.
To my surprise out of everyone who has played my game only 4-5% of people have added their real name, I have had people enter random characters in both the boxes.
I have even mentioned that this information is used to enhance the game experience.. still!!29 -

Least favorite enterprise software (so far) is Oracle JD Edwards (but more specifically the integration between systems).
Unfortunately a board member was friends with an employee who recommended JDE. It required full time maintenance and a few years later that employee left and the company wrote off over a million dollars to go back to the old (but slightly updated) system.
Following that, a board member (the same one I think) agreed to have another friend's security business install CCTV across the branches. The project was not scoped and no thought had gone into it, making a real mess for the IT department to sort out (provided hardware was under spec'd, existing networking equipment needed replacing, etc)
Who do these upper management people think they are that they can make decisions based on little fact or research and expect the people beneath them to just magically make work.
The huge salaries of those people is not justified. We're the real workers who actually get stuff done so the pay and appreciation should be spread accordingy.
Rant over. -
I suggest at our retro that other teams have skills in languages and frameworks that we have only just started using, and that we practically just make it up as we go along and then keep making changes as we realise things suck. Why not bring a real expert in from another team for 1 or 2 days to rapidly improve our knowledge?
15 people in the room, every single one of them: "no that's stupid. Why would you even do that?"
Really? Am I the retarded one?3 -

As a newbie dev, I'm looking for partners to work together. You know I feel like unmotivated right now for some unknown reasons. We can also share some new ideas together!1

I hate and despise all governments so much right now. Blunder, waste money. Politicians are rarely held accountable for the bad decisions
People say that anarchy is bad. Like, the streets would be full of thieves and bandits: you walk 10m and you get robbed because there is no police. The real question though, is: do we have any real evidence on this matter? Just something I've been wondering about lately.
Do we have a real-world example where the crime rate actually goes down because of a good decision made by the government? Do we have a historical example of an anarchy society? The way I understand it, people were just more bloodthirsty in the past: many liked the idea of going to war and killing enemies (is fact). Now the culture has changed, but the governments are stuck in the past.17 -

No-meds is a real privilege. Let me explain.
There are people who have to take a shit ton of medicines/pills to 'just' function normally.

It's the only privilege I can get behind the idea of.4 -

Yesterday I saw something about real-time Implementations using deepstream.io and been asking myself if I should try to add it to the project I'm working on (Angular).
It's important to say I'm working for free, because it's a school project, which in the end is going to be used by real people and solve real problems inside my school.
BUT it's not a required feature. It's more like a matter of vanity.
It's just id don't know if it's worth the time and effort. Or if it will work at all2 -
I have 2 server that run in production that using SQL Server Developer Edition and SQL Server Standard Edition. This was setup by shit people before they all resigned from the company.
I need to upgrade both server to Enterprise Edition. It give me a real pain since both server is on production side now.
Is it possible to upgrade it without any error or long downtime?3 -
Every profession has people who have done some real shit. You have doctors, lawers, scientists, architects.
I want to be one of those developers who did some real shit. I'm just saying.....6 -
Politics isn’t real. The only real thing is the economy, that is and will always revolve around natural resources.
Life on Earth is hell. Living with people is hell. If you’re not experiencing hell, you’re lucky enough to find yourself on a territory that belongs to violent criminals that are stronger than other violent criminals around them. Stronger criminals will always steal resources from/destroy the ecology of weaker criminals, as if we had multiple planets and there was no tomorrow.
It is like this, and it will always be like this, until a major step further in the evolution of human brain.
All hail autism — the best candidate for said step.3 -
In Go, one symbol is called a rune. A string is a string, but when I try to manipulate it, it turns into an array of bytes, not an array of runes. I then have to deal with this crap.
Can you suggest some mental gymnastics to justify this behavior to people who use real programming languages?5 -
Working as a Dev for a while now, I tell new people not to bother with it. There is never any job satisfaction as people in charge never understand the basics.
Instead of learning to write efficient code, figure out how to solve real business problems, work towards a maintainable flexible product to quickly deliver value on changing requirements, write automated tests to improve quality, maintainability and prevent live issues - basically do anything a good Dev strives for - you will just constantly end up working for people with no interest beyond the next couple days, on a shit code base that no one can understand, with people that don't want to learn anything about software design and just check boxes off.
Apart from pay this must be the worst career possible in a technical field.4 -

What's everyone's favorite operating system? I've been using Ubuntu for years now and I actually have no idea why as I have no real reason to be using it other than people tell me it is good.
What is everyone's favorite (unix) OS and why?1 -
So I was tooling through the same dumb crap again looking at the same posts and watching as people just for some reason do the same things as we no longer try to solve the problem of the country getting bankrupted which they cause and I feel an almost total lack of any or all motivation to do anything.
why should I ?
people are chomping at the bit to ruin our country and have succeeded for some time now.
our courts are corrupt
our government is bullshit
the young and old are all garbage
and noone seems interested in time progressing because there is always some other dumbshit
age group reaching maturity being told the most obscene explanations for things.
its like i'm mad max discovering the airplane cult !
and yeah I like what i'm looking at exactly this moment, but its not worth what it costs in the absence of a real economy.
I want to move forward with life and retain a life the only way these bastards coerce people to engage in their weird ordered tyranny is by removing their ability to have a normal life.
fuck you people.
additionally, fuck your arranging the most obsene aspect of your whore trade beside the one normal people would want !1 -
Just burning right through the years of our lives aren’t we ? Same bitch
Same studies
Same unfinished work
Same jack assess
Same bots
I wish people hadn’t gone out of their way to make me feel they were full of shit at points
Liars lying requires some real annoying thoughts to determine if they’re lying 100% of the time or just deceiving because they know you think that6 -
Gitlab as a product is awesome, the real wtf is the processes (manual, automated or otherwise) and people supporting their cloud offering.3

Why do people obsess over Rust for some reason ? Is there any real-world reason to do so ? Can anyone enlighten me please ?5

Working on a (mostly) off-grid LAN.
Basically just a real-life meetup in or around Arnhem (eg. somewhere in a park) where we have some banter and some offline IT (or non-IT, whatever people attending want) fun.
Of course, taking the covid-19 shit in mind.
wrote an entire custom DNS server (using DoH only atm) for it, added a Matrix server (along with Element so people have a start) and a wiki for it :)
Still need to add a Gitea server (or similar, any suggestions?) to it tho.
Gonna see to have some trial-runs by myself (or maybe with 1 or 2 people) soon.
Soooo exited o see two months worth of planning and development start coming together :313 -
I wanted my MySpace and Xanga to look better and function better than everyone else's.
I created a very basic directory on my xanga linking people's real names to their respective xanga for my group of friends. I started getting requests to add people to my directory. All my friends would go to my xanga first so they could easily find our friend's xangas.
I created social networking.
lol jk.
But it felt good knowing that I made the Internet a bit easier to use. -
20 years in and I’m just now discovering Fish! Why the hell isn’t it more popular? For real, it has more features OOB than bash or zsh and the scripted is so much nicer. Oh I need to add to my path? Just add onto a built in variable from the CLI and your good, no need for a script to append a line to some file loaded by zsh or opening up the .zshrc and manually editing it. And how bout that “funcsave” built in huh? Freaking awesome. More people need to be championing Fish, it’s better than your terminal bros zsh6

How many people use a real bug tracker? We use a project management tool for our bug tracking and it SUCKS!
What tools do you use for project management/bug tracking?2 -
Is the android emulator still dogshit? Will I put myself through endless misery until I get a real device? Last I tried was when people were using eclipse.2

Real Estate agent. I'm good with people and I'm detail oriented - that combination has made me a very successful developer & consultant. I'd probably have built out my own real estate sales support tech (e.g. my own web site, apps, whatever) on my own just to have kept up my technology interest. I like the idea of making 3% commission on $400k home sales for basically doing jack shit but schmoozing clients and keeping up with state laws that can be covered in a 40 hour course and taking a licensing exam.

Holy shit why does change management have to be such garbage? I've never worked anywhere with a formal change process that felt remotely like it adds value. It seems like it's even WORSE when there's a dedicated change/process team. They just get super edgy and jaded, likely because no one wants to follow their ridiculous requirements, and bitch at people whenever the real world happens and things have to happen "out of band".2
-
Some people referencing each other makes it seem like this platform is a small circle. Do you guys meet in real life too?5

The tragedy of my life has been I grew up in the sane real world not knowing it was insane and that the inmates thus interred in the asylum they embraced used the real
World to cover their perversity and inhumanity. When they had less freaks all around and more normal people to mimic they mimicked ordinary people better and I not knowing what they were, made explanations that seemed more reasonable than the truth for their strange behavior. And behind the scenes they were lying and taking advantage of a man who only wanted to live and have the things that seemed reasonable: a home, a companion, and some set of interests to follow when not working. Maybe some ambition in there as well but it’s evident that only the most evil people truly thrive and then only a small subsection of them. And now I wander back through looking at what amounts to moving museum pieces of trash all standing in the same places telling the same lies and in some cases so inane and stupid they think this benefits them. That the destruction of all the light in the world availed them somehow. Definition of pathetic.2 -
You know all those years ago
I saw some guys being handed COVID-19 masks in a lockdown facility
But no one outside was wearing them
I sometimes wonder
How stupid people must have felt when they realized it wasn't real
Footage from Chile in 2021 shows their military wearing those retarded masks4 -
Are dating sites safe for real meetings?
Very few people who use dating sites consider them only for online communication. Most users need them to find someone for real dating. So, after an online dating stage, sooner or later, people start thinking about meeting in real life. And even if everything has been perfect and smooth and you have a great time via online chat, it doesn’t mean yet that you shouldn’t forget about safety measures. I don’t doubt the online dating safety, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, when taking a decision to move from online to real dating, you need to prepare for the first date well and thoroughly.
1. Make it formal
Even if you have been chatting online for many months, and you know probably everything about this person, including many moments of life that people usually do not share at once, you still should not rush the events, no matter how hard you want to make a huge step forward. Your first non-virtual date should be formal, no exclusions. Choose a crowded place for the first date, for example, a restaurant, cinema, exhibition, or agree to meet in a park and spend time there. Do not invite a person to your home nor accept an invitation to visit her house.
2. Inform your friends where you are going
I know that it may seem like too much for just a date, but you are going to meet a person you have never seen in real life. And informing a friend that you are going for a date with an online match is an absolutely right decision. Besides, most dating sites recommend to do it.
3. Leave if you feel uncomfortable
Your real date may significantly differ from the online ones that you had before. So, if you see that your virtual partner is not the person you know so well online, you’d better end this date. Not all online dates should go real. Sometimes, it’s better to leave things as they are and continue communication online.
4. Avoid alcohol
Do not drink alcohol on the first date. Even if you feel a bit nervous and you know that a little alcohol will help you to relax and calm down. I still recommend you to avoid drinking because you may either create a wrong image of yourself and spoil the date anyways or simply make mistakes.
So, how safe is online dating? I’d say that online dating is 100% safe in case you do not neglect the basic rules which work not only for virtual dating but also for the real-world one. Do not rush events, take your time, avoid conversations about money, do not send or buy gifts on request, and do not share personal things about you unless you are sure you know a person well enough. https://wizzlove.com3 -

I have been using CakePHP 1.3 and 2.x fore some years. I built two custom platforms on them that we used for almost every project at work, and also some of my freelance ones.
We've built all kind of stuff, from basic CMS to large scale CRM/ERP systems, and it held it's own!
But now I wanna build another one! :D
I wanna build a platform on CakePHP 3.x fore sume time at work, but the constant flow of projects leaves little time for this.
And I am not talking about the shitty stuff like the sorry attempts you can find oh GitHub right now, that I never even managed to use once for a real project (I really tired!), I am talking about a real platform, for real world projects, with a real world interface, and real world functionallity, for real world use cases!
I was thinking to start an open source project, but I never managed one so I have some concerns...
Like it will not get any contributors and I will eventually do it on my own anyway, or like it WILL get traction and I will not be able to manage the project, or the community.
I am the head of the dev dept at work, but open source seems like a whole new ball game for me...
Anyway, what do you people think? Would you work on something like that? Would you use it? Should I create a GitHub project and add a collab? Or is it doomed already? -
Now I have a real, not controversial question. Many times using a specific technology I get stack and despite years of experience (in other similar technologies) it seems I'm not able to go on. Maybe a colleague can help me, maybe they can't. Many "experts" say that they haven't had any problems in that area, but you see a lot of people that either: 1) keep changing their technology stack because they keep bumping into problmes 2) stop learning because novelities are such difficult to integrate 3) resort to already integrated tools that are less customizable (and less powerful) (microsoft benefits from these people). I want to say openly that I often bump into problems expecially in open source stacks. I often need help and I struggle to find it.4

Whenever I rant about JavaScript and it's terrible way of doing things differently and totally illogical in the way real programmers would do things versus webdev-scriptkiddies...
Whenever I laugh about these engineers who can only 'code' in Matlab...
Whenever I hear people consider configuring (of stuff like WordPress or RGB-Keyboard-Lights etc.) as 'programming'...
I wonder, if I'm just like the 'Real Programmers' back in 1983 who truly considered Fortran or Assembly to be much more superior than Pascal and someone who coded in the latter or even used a simple OS like UNIX couldn't get accepted as a programmer.
Found that old article about "Real Programmers".
It's worth a read.
http://pbm.com/~lindahl/...
Just consider someone writing modern computer programs without libraries, ifs, for loops and only gotos by hand from top to bottom...
Some day I want to start some modern project everyone else would do in some random modern scripting language and hack it down in assembly just for fun and to tell people, I did it. So I could call myself a Real Programmer too.2 -

Does anyone find any value over doing paid courses online vs just watching youtube videos about the content?
I've learned just about everything in my career by reading/watching tutorials and following along. I'm confused as to why people pay for that kind of training when it's freely available. Is there real value there?10 -
Why the fuck do people not reply all when I clearly added people for a real and even let them know...8

Okay we get it.
You hate x programming language because of y idiosyncrasy.

I use recursion.
