My brother and I have been messing with our IBM 5150 and doing cool stuff with it. I got it to play a youtube video via telnet via my bro's mac via mplayer with libcaca (ascii video output) + youtube-dl (a youtube downloader. The mac is doing all the heavy lifting, but it is still cool to see these images on a IBM 5150, just by typing a few commands on that old keyboard... more fun projects to come with this old thing.

Doing web development on one monitor is a living nightmare.

Hello guys. So after I posted the rant about me blocking Google and Facebook through my hosts file, some people commented with the idea of creating a gitlab page with more privacy tips etc.

Well, that is turning into a project (actual website) that I initially started alone but @ewpratten joined the 'team' as frontender!

He'll be doing the front end and I'll be doing the backend :).

I think this will be my first ever (active) collab so I'm pretty excited =D.

Best way to avoid procrastinating: the sooner it gets done, the sooner I no longer have to think about doing it. When I have a bunch of shit to do, I start with the things I like the least, and save the more enjoyable things for last.

Dropped out to grow a business I co-founded. Respect to all those that finished. I was already working a six figure salary as a software engineer before I even started at a university. I decided to attend though to have a more complete resume. One day a professor explained that we could look forward to doing really "advanced concepts" like web services OUR SENIOR YEAR. That was already daily life for me. Our business was starting to grow quickly and it needed more and more of my time. I chose the business and for me, that was the correct choice.

1. Try to stay sane in startup chaos
2. Use more vacation days
3. Separate work and free time a bit more
4. Get out into nature more
5. Hire 50+ good developers & get company to 15M active end users while doing all of the above

That awkward moment when you realise that your machine is doing more learning than you this semester.

I remember seeing Silicon Valley and watching Big Head do nothing at a big company and thought that was never possible.

Working at a FAANG company for 6 years and just completed 3 months of sitting around doing nothing, with 6 more months to come.

After 12 years of having programming as a hobby and getting more than proficient in doing sysadmin work and fullstack development - I finally got my first job interview and test-case!

I started my journey one year back when i had no knowledge of any programming language except basics of C.
Learnt python, Js and many more things.
Prepared for interview, got selected in first interview.
It's been more than 2 months at the new job.
Really it feels so great to see people using your developed tools in real life.
Hope to be more successful and to contribute more to community. 🤞

Start changing how young people look at programming. It’s not nerds doing nerdy things, it’s about real people using code to solve real problems. I think once the mindset changes it will get many more people interested.

I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!

TLDR why do I need to be like a competitive coder just to get a good job?

Why does being very good at technical interview questions beat having a portfolio of actual apps built using technology, tools, and skills that are much more relevant to the needs of doing the actual jobs?

Got my first laptop while I was overseas.

It was a windows hp laptop with Vista.

It was an absolute piece of shit.

Decided to find the people responsible of it.

Got to what a software engineer was.

Boss told me to look in the library to see if i find some books on the subject. Got a Java and C++ book.

Shit was hard af cuz I had no clue what I was doing, but I liked it. Decided to look more into an application wise platform of study rather than doing basic CLI shit. Got into web development with Java. Got a hold of more JS. Liked JS more cuz shit was easy, found about server side JS with classic ASP, did VBScript as well.

Eventually found Python, fell in love but hated the whitespace ussage for block level code etc. Found Ruby, to this day the most beautiful language according to me. Read about why's poignant intro to Ruby.

Dug it, but wanted some other things. Found out about the study of data structures ans algorithms, then harvard's free cs50 course, then mit courseware, rice's python class. Took all of them. CS50 introduced php, liked it, sounded like a drug, was easy to use, for whatever fucking reaskn my ass decided to use version 4 even though 5 was already out. Learned to appreciate advancements in programming language even more

Hipster phase, while studying php got more into JS and web design with more css concepts, wanted my shit to be pretty. Somehow landed with Common Lisp. Mind fucking blown.

Continued with php. Got into uni, math made sense through programming, ok so I am stupid, but not that stupid, python is the best calculator ever.

I like to joke around when I am working. I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but ffs you should be able to laugh at really complex problems in stressful situations. How else can you remain sane writing thousands of lines of code just for an e-commerce site or so someone can post even more cat pictures on the Internet.

Doing combinatorial analysis.

One of the post processing scripts throws away combinatorial information, analyses significance of individual data points instead.

Code was so complicated, nobody noticed.

* No raise after one year, even that I don't earn that much
* Working in the oldest project
* Everyday I have to make quick fixes, usually requested by leader
* No spare time to rewrite shitty code - always something have higher priority (like doing some tasks that I shouldn't do, just because I had no tasks for next sprint)
* Got feedback from leader that I "hack" too much instead of writing code properly (see third dot)
* Every company around pays more and have more up-to-date stack
* The only guy that wanted to change stuff and use more generic approaches from other teams just threw resignation paper

I feel like when I was a less experienced developer I was way more productive and undertook more complicated hobby projects.

I used to not give a fuck. Use a language I've never used before? Fuck it, let's learn it on the fly. I need to use a weird library with last commit 2 years ago? I don't care, let's import it. Make a computer vision project even though I know nothing about it and I end up just making up the techniques without reading any research? Let's make it my uni year project.

Now days I have so much doubt whenever doing anything. I always spend too much time thinking about what's the best way of doing it and doing research to see how others have done it. All of my experimentation spirit has been sucked away.

My first hackathon when I was in my university. I never used to work on any side projects apart from assignments and academic projects. I was so shocked when I saw that people were so dedicated in developing a working product in a weekend sacrificing sleep and food. I got so depressed that I wasn't doing anything and people around me were doing so much!!!!! That's when I was motivated to learn more, do more, work more. After this, I never missed a single hackathon while I was studying :) I'm so much better at what I do now because of hackathons.

I had a standing ovation at my first talk at a conference. I was so nervous at first and then it was easy afterwards. I wonder if I should do more talks. Anyone have any experience doing this that can give some advice?

Got introduced to RLE on a rant the other day and holy shit doing more research into it and it's algorithms... How the fuck have I not known of this?!?!?!

Write a piece of code that works just fine and it's fairly extensible in 20 minutes.

Then proceed to spend the rest of your night rethinking and replacing said piece of code numerous times, with slightly more elegant code.

7 hours later and I'm still not done. Although a fine way to improve your skills, I seriously need to stop doing that for every single thing I write and start managing my time better. Got lots of other stuff I need to be working on...

It is such a breeze to work with components and to be able to just change something and have everything instantly recompile and update on the webpage. I am actually enjoying doing the frontend more than the backend which is strange because I am a backend guy 🤣

I worked with a developer for months. He was senior to me; on more money than me and had way more experience. I spent at least 25% of my time explaining the most basic stuff to him. Things like 'no, that's not how a cache works', 'no, you shouldnt be doing string concatenation inside a loop', 'no you've completely written the wrong thing because you didn't listen'

When he left, he claimed to have finished off a feature for our application. We dove into it, rewrote it, made it more efficient, the code cleaner, the documentation more succinct and the logic more obvious. When I say we, I mean me and a student, and by me and a student, I mean the student with some very light prodding from me.

I have this thing where I procastinate untill the last day and then I start doing things because I feel more motivated/ working faster, untill then I watch youtube and kill time by other means.

My product owner was once under the impression that writing more code was something I enjoyed doing, but it couldn't be farther from the truth.

Writing new solutions and patterns is fun, adding anything other than that is just more future maintenance work

I don't fucking see how others get their stuff through code review, if when I make an enhancement it gets stopped for stuff other people did before me. Like, at this point it seems like I'm spending more and more time refactoring than simply doing the requested enhancements.

I don't blame the team, they're going off of the documentation. But this is getting ridiculous.

Got hired for my UI knowledge, then I get stuck doing backend work since I started, while the mountain of UI work just continues to grow and they refuse to let me work on it instead of hiring more backend help. Cool cool cool cool.

More companies need to clamp down on hard-coding secrets. It’s not difficult to store them somewhere else, and there’s swathes of free tooling to stop you doing it in the first place.

I kind of just came to an insight that my computer is sort of my partner in crime.

I "teach" it how to do something that I'm probably better of not doing or should do in moderation... But then it gives me access to so much of the stuff, I spend a lot more time doing it... more effectively.

So I actually don't save much time because it makes it easier so I now do even more...

Another week at uni and another with me doing daft shit. I had an online meeting with my project group and the projects mentor. And since it was essentially full of bullshit, I decided to add even more. By wearing cat ears for the entire duration. Which turned out to be the only fun thing. /ᐠ.ꞈ.ᐟ\

I think I've reached the point where I've been programming for so long that I have off by one errors doing normal math by hand. Nothing more humbling than getting beat out to a bunch of simple math problems to a grade schooler.

Everytime I learn more tricks I also get more opportunities to do obvious mistakes.

Why every non tech person acts like I'm doing no fucking shit all day?

These types of things makes me want open my own fucking office.

CI CD pipelines in my company... Having CICD suppose to help development... Now we have countless templates and tools (github actions, circle ci, agro, aws beanstalk, azure pipelines, serverless, terraforms, cloud formation, helm charts, ECR, Vault... and few more).

Total chaos, doing simple CICD for 1 api and 1 lambda took 3 days so far, and will take bit more.

On top of that, no one have idea which part of scripts are doing what exactly, as responsibilities are in different tools (each tool have different config files).

Does deployment have to be so complex? Or is it that my company DevOps team makes it so unnecessary complicated?

Not too long ago I saw my old boss and he told me i shoud apply back at the company and get back working Front-end.

I went to check the job posting. To my surprise, the qualifications they were asking were completely different than what I was doing at the time.

Been on a fairly large project for the past two months. Been getting more and more productive and confident with each sprint! Always informed that I’m doing fine. Left a four hour task in progress for a day or so while tending to a PR which had been pending for a week and a half and was currently under review. Removed from the project due to issues with velocity.

Today I tried teaching a 36 years old student about HTML and layout. My inner self is always restless for practice as an excuse for less talking, but in the end I end up doing even more talking and getting kinda embarrassed.

Good thing is that student understood everything well enough in this 1 hour. I also inserted some good stuff: tips and tricks, conventions mentioned, trends... He even craved for more information.

I'm going to prepare to make further studies more fruitful, because the next synopses won't be as theoretical as today's one.

Started out with python, while meaning to learn javascript.

I am now competent in python. Im still not sure how it happened.

Started python because I got tired with doing repetative calculations by hand. I think I had like a phobia of problem solving with nested loops. any time I thought a problem would require nesting, especially more than one nested loop, I would just avoid doing it, or end up doing it by hand.

Wrote so many goddamn loops though in the process of exploring graphs, doing things by hand seems like a nuisance. Thinking in loops has its own zen or something.

Now I just need to get over my fear of json-based CLI-enabled configuration-over-convention.

I was working as freelancer while doing my bachelor degree and then got hired. I'll say that help bigger company to trust and pay you more. But nothing about skills.

The more I use snaps on Linux, the more I feel like we came the full circle. Installable package (snap) contains a bundle of all dependencies, and installs them in an isolated system path to avoid version incompatibilities. Snaps can can have some sort of install-time configuration, and they create links to a handful of entry points rather than adding all executables to the path. In short, they do the exact same thing Windows installers have been doing for the past 30 years.

I think that perhaps my abhor for my current position is a little more directed to the people and company that I work for, but I am really just fed up.

I have found quite a liking in terms of web-design. The clients and the work is a lot less stressful than what I am doing now - and I actually enjoy what I am doing. It is nice to see something come to fruition.

I seem to always focus on the negative things and it's miserable not only for myself but also the people around me. I think about doing things more than doing them. I'm in my own head a lot. It's difficult to let go. I mask a lot (i.e. try to act normal, to not be [or rather feel] judged).

I'm trying to change - from today - by not complaining anymore about things out of my control, spending less time online / more outside and doing more sports. It would probably do me good to find an outdoors hobby, ideally a social/cooperative activity with some physical activity.
