*yesterday*
Client: "Perfect! How did you do this so quickly?"
Me: "I used a library"
*today*
Me: "I'm still debugging. It will take some time"
Client: "Well, it has already taken too long...I can hear Mozart in the background. Maybe you need to go to a library to get some quiet and get it done fast. Visit the one you used yesterday."
Me: "Library?...Ah, I meant plugin...like, code...a library is a bunch of packaged code"5 -
Management : "How long you think it would take?"
Me : "now this is a rough estimate, but I think building the back-end and database alone could take 6-months minimum"
Management : "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS"
me : "its a big proj..."
Management : "I thought it will be something like 10 days, already told the client it can be done"
me : "but we are not ready"
Management : "how are we not ready? we already have the virtual 3D shop, and we can use this ready-to-deploy eCommerce service as our data base "
... "you need to figure this out, this is not acceptable" he continued
* 2 Days Later -talking to my direct boss *
Boss : "since you don't know how to do it..."
me : "what ? I didn't say I can't do it, all I said it will take six months"
Boss : "yeah yeah, anyway there is this studio, a professional polish studio, we called them and they can do it, we will sign a contract with them, this will let you focus on the front-end. good?"
me : "well alright then"
Boss : "please write a doc, explaining everything needed from the backend"
-to me that was the end of it, took a long time to tell me they made the deal-
* 5 Months later *
- "Abdu, can you come here for a minute..."
- "yes boss?"
- "the document we asked you to do for the Polish studio, did you specify that we needed an integration with the API we are using for eCommerce?"
scared to death I answered : "why of course I did!"
I ran to my PC to check it out because I didn't know, I forgot because no one even comment on my doc. I check it out, and it was clearly explained... I got relaxed...
turns out they didn't even do what we asked them for. took them 5 months, and with no communication whatsoever. all their work was useless to us. complete dump waste.
----------------
never mentioned this until a year later... in a heat of moment when they were asking me to make an impossible task with no men and no time... I reminded them of this story... management didn't like it. but it was the truth. they didnt push this crazily this time13 -
tl;dr don't, just don't.
A curious little me (12-14 years) just stated using the family shared computer.
And he thought: It's so slow! Maybe I can make it faster, my parents would be happy!
So he looked at this little switch on the back and he switched it from 230 to 115.
Not knowing what he did, he turned the PC on... for the last time.
Smoke, a nasty smell and a loud bang were the last memories left behind.
The parents were not happy.34 -
My grandma comes to me with all her computer problems, but this time she came to tell me a story instead.
She said she was about to call me for help, and then thought about what I would do. "Google it."
And guys, she did. She googled it. And she got an answer.
I taught her to fish, guys :) I did it.

No, I'm not hacking.
No Linux is not a movie.
No, you are not a developer because you can put "Hello World" on a website.
No, this isn't a waste of my time.
Yes, I will use it.
Yes, I'll make you a website for free. NOT!
Your phone is both Android and Samsung.
No, what they did in the movie is impossible.
No, I can't predict the stock market.

User : Hey, can you help me with this thumbdrive? Cannot open it
Me: Sure, let me see...
At this time I noticed that the drive was leaking something and smells funny also...
Me: Did you dropped it into water or something liquid?
User: Ehmm. Yes! Washed it with bleach!
Me: But why?
User : Oh! because of viruses.8 -

A few days ago a friend of mine rang me up complaining about internet issues with his computer. As usual I did the "is it plugged in, turn it off then on again" sort of thing to waste time while my pasta was cooking. After a while he asked if I had another bogus solution, so I suggested flushing his toilet.
He runs off, I hear the flush, comes back and viola - it fucking worked.
The point of this is: if it don't work, flush the toilet. You're welcome, tech support out ✌️11 -
PRANK
I remember this one time when I tried to prank my friend's laptop and it went horribly wrong
So at first when I got a hold of his laptop I changed his background to Batman and every icon to batman and all the names of his icons on the desktop to "NA", "NANANA", so on so forth
I thought he'd get the joke. But little did I know that the next time I'd meet him he told me that he reformated his laptop because of a virus that made his whole laptop go batman 😱😱.
After that I never told him about the prank I made. I feel so ashamed hahaha3 -
Sorry if I make a typo, my hands a still a little shaky, just had to stop myself from crying.
This morning I came in, opened my email, saw an automated response from Jira saying .... saying ..... saying the backend team provided details about their new endpoint.
After a year of screaming, they finally did it. It was so beautiful I fell to the floor and wept like a baby.
Thank you all for your support through this difficult time. Together we can accomplish anything!!!7 -
As usual, I woke up at 6, got ready and did all my usual stuff.
Then at 6:15 I was beautifying my Python script because the code was unattractive.
I swear it took 5 minutes! No more than five minutes, but when I checked the time it was 7:10! Why must this happen all the time?
It's just like when I'm sleeping. I'll wake up, close my eyes for two seconds, and then it's magically been an hour.31 -
Lead engineer: "Well, uh... I haven't really prepared a test for you but the HR insists that I should test you before wrapping up this interview.. so uh.... what do you suggest we should do now?"
Me: "Um... how about we walk through my latest project code and you can ask me to optimize it?"
Lead engineer: "Sounds cool, allright let's do that. How much time do you need?"
Welp. Did I just pick my own interview question?5 -
Dev: Why did you suddenly start adding random whitespace to the end of all of the files in your PRs?
Manager: IT’S NOT RANDOM!
Dev: ?
Manager: That’s a way I came up with for tracking my contributions. Every time I edit a file I add a line of whitespace at the bottom so it’s clear to everyone how much and how often I’ve contributed to the team. Although I haven’t been doing it this entire time so I had to make up for this by adding more to files that I *know* I’ve touched a bunch before. Just think! Especially with how big my PRs are compared to everyone else the tally of my contributions is going to get huge!
Dev: …21 -
Had to explain a developer from a wordpress dev agency where to find the wp-config.php file and what it does/what the values do.
This person has been doing this for years.
I looked at this config file for nearly the first time in my life.
I literally had to explain her which variables stood for/did/meant what.
I am fucking done with today.8 -
"Hey nephew, why doesn't the FB app work. It shows blank white boxes?"
- It can't connect or something? (I stopped using the FB app since 2013.)
"What is this safe mode that appeared on my phone?!"
- I don't know. I don't hack my smartphone that much. Well, I actually do have a customised ROM. But stop! I'm pecking my keyboard most of the time.
"Which of my files should I delete?"
- Am I supposed to know?
"Where did my Microsoft Word Doc1.docx go?"
- It lets you choose the location before you hit save.
"What is 1MB?"
- Search these concepts on Google. (some of us did not have access to the Internet when we learned to do basic computer operations as curious kids.)
"What should I search?"
- ...
"My computer doesn't work.. My phone has a virus. Do you think this PC they are selling me has a good spec? Is this Video Card and RAM good?"
- I'm a programmer. I write code. I think algorithmically and solve programming problems efficiently. I analyse concepts such as abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management, security, software engineering, and web development. No, I will not fix your PC.7 -
It’s time.
FUCK YOU FRONTEND DEVELOPERS!!!
What the FUCK is wrong with you!?
Could you please STOP creating ”innovate” user interfaces….
Just FUCKING STOP!!!!!
Web after web after web and I can see 100 different fucking date pickers. I mean. WHAT-THE-FUCK!!!
And the menus. GIVE US A FUCKING CLEAR UNDERSTANDING WHERE THE FUCK I AM.
And clicking back SHOULD FUCKING WORK YOU RETARDS!!!
YOU IMBECILS!
And remember the scrolling position. WHAT THE FUCK!? I did that shit
15 YEARS AGO
YOU FUCKERS!!!
It is just… a sad, sad place. I wish the old web was back. Super quick. Simple. Clear.
I get it. It is better now but IT IS NO EXCUSE TO JUST SKIP THE FUNDAMENTALS!!! You bastards!!!
AND WHY THE FUCK THE LARGE IMAGES!? You should have solved this by now!!! Fucking MB!? Are you serious? Did your mother not love you enough?
Oh man that felt good…35 -
A while ago I had all these ideas for side projects, and I really wanted to create something. However, every time I started to work on it I usually started the IDE, wrote a couple of lines, and quickly lost motivation. This kept going for a while. I just wasn't feeling it and when there is little or no (visible) progress it can be hard for me to continue working.
Then one day I wanted to push through it, and decided to set a rule: I have to make at least one commit per day, no matter how small.
So I (re)started work on a side project, and by the time I was satisfied with what I'd want to commit I've made enough progress to want to continue working on it. This quickly turned minutes of coding into (late) hours. Now I have a couple of side projects going which are progressing quite nicely, and I feel motivated to work on them again.
I don't know if there are any other people on here who've had this feeling, but if you did maybe this'll help you :) I'd love to hear from you how you keep yourself motivated!10 -
Me: Damn it guys, you broke the master branch again.
*Fixes master branch*
*15 minutes later*
Coworker: Bro, master branch is broken again.
Me: Oh for fuck's sake, who did it this time?
Coworker: You did.
Me: I have become the very thing I've swore to destroy.1 -
DST is my arch enemy.
"Why did I get paid for 7 hours instead of 8?"
"Because you worked from 1:00 till 9:00"
"Yeah, that's 8 hours"
"No it wasn't"
"Why does this input field say invalid time for 02:00?"
"Because that time doesn't exist"
"Why are so many tests failing"
"Because they check timestamps and durations which don't make sense in non-continuous time"
October is even worse...6 -

About 20ish years ago I was working in IT, and it was about around this time where CD-Roms were hitting the stores and becoming the newest craze. However, Microsoft did not write the drivers correctly for this new hardware.
In a nutshell, the driver would be installed and the user would lose the sound to their speaker.
How did this happen? By altering the way the interrupts worked on the computer. At the time there only existed a few unreserved IRQs or Interrupt ReQuests. The installer package would redirect IRQ 5 which is "User Selectable (Sound Cards)" to work with the CD-Rom. This was fine and all unless you wanted to listen to your speakers.
I had come up with a clever hack through rewriting a config file that would be run during bootup. So at the time of boot up IRQ 5 would be dedicated to the sound card, and IRQ7 (which was usually for the Lpt1 Printer) would be dedicated to the CD-Rom. This worked.
And because I was IT at the time, I would get a lot of calls for fixing this problem.
So, as you can imagine, I've gotten **really** good at doing this. I didn't even need to be at a computer to walk someone through the problem.
I receive a call one day, it was a problem with the CD-Rom and sound card. I walk him through the problem and he reboots his computer. I could hear him on the other side jumping with joy when he was able to put in his music CD and hear sound coming from the speakers.
He asks me, how in the hell did you figure this out!? You're a fucking Genius!
And I said, It's not rocket science it's just a computer.
There was a long pause of silence.
Uhhh... Hello? Did I say something wrong?
Sir, I work at NASA I deal with Rocket Science on a daily basis.4 -
1. Submit my resume, get an email asking to schedule an interview
2. Schedule the interview
3. One day before the scheduled time, I get an email saying that the interview is being rescheduled to another time two days later (no explanation for why they did this)
4. I clear out my schedule and wait for the interview call (it’s suppose to be at 2:30, but I wait like 15 minutes early because I don’t want to miss it)
5. I don’t get a call
6. At 3:00, I call the company and ask whats going on. They apologize and say my interviewer will call me back as soon as he gets back from lunch.
7. He doesn’t call.
8. At 4:00 I call them back. Apparently the guy who was suppose to interview me went home. I ask them wtf they are doing and if this is how they treat their employees. They said they would reschedule the interview and call me back once they did.
9. No one calls.
10. I wait a week, call them back, and am told that the funding for my position didn’t come through (what does that mean? You’re not hiring programmers to design the software for your billion dollar war machines anymore? Seriously?).
I’ve had it with this company. I don’t know if it was just this incompetent recruiting group or if this is a company full of scumbags, but I mean, really?1 -
Guys, my unfortunately daily rant of my pm
I was told to create a docker env for our team. Good. Document the process so everyone can know what to do. Good.
My PM follows what he wants to instead of step by step and changes whatever he wants to.
I am asked for help because he doesnt know. No prob.
Me: "Do this, do this and.."
PM: "that doesnt matter, trust me, I could change it and.."
Me: "...and it wont work"
PM: "I know suff too, check" *does his changes aaaaaand doesnt work*
* awkward staring*
That happened a while ago.
This week, he crashed his git repo because he was doing things in docker team (including him) decided not to.
Took me more enough time explaining him "you are not supposed to do that in the container" funny fact he wanted to prove that his way was right and even if he did my way it would crash.
Sooooo he did my way just to prove how wrong I was. Everything worked flawlessly. Rage-still-awkward staring.
Plus the "aww that's weird. I dont know how this happened" -
2019 resolutions/goals recap: (non-personal ones)
1) Improve diet (did; e.g. ramen and fast food to clean keto)
2) Lose weight (did; lost 24 pounds!)
3) Find a good job (did, twice)
4) Buy a harp (did not; large and expensive, no place to put it, and I have small children who would absolutely break it)
5) Keep house clean, even if it's by myself (did, somewhat; I cleaned some, managed to get one other person to clean semi-regularly, and another sporadically)
6) Work on social awkwardness (did; read and applied Dale Carnegie's The Art of Public Speaking, which netted me my last job offer. Still pretty awkward though)
7) Move out of the desert (did not; not enough money, and job didn't allow remote work)
8) Stop bloody waiting on people (did not; still very guilty of this...)
I don't remember the rest 🙁 didn't write them down last year. But I still accomplished 5 out of the 8 I remembered, with one being a pass, so 5/7!
-----
2020 resolutions/goals:
1) Finally move out of the desert
2) Invest 20% of my income every month
3) Reduce bills by 20%
4) Solve/address some health issues
5) Make a schedule so things regularly get done around the house, e.g. cleaning
6) Find some friends and make time for them
7) Replace Debian with something else
8) Revamp my backup system
9) Be proactive and stop waiting on people
10) Build a (stationary) coil gun for fun18 -
Bored waiting for code to compile so here is a joke someone sent me last week .....
A man walks in a bar with his pet monkey. He sits down and orders a drink, meanwhile the monkey is running around all over the place and jumps up on a pool table. He grabs the 8 ball, shoves it into his mouth and swallows it hole.
"Holy crap!" says the bartender, completely livid. He says to the man, "Did you see what your stupid monkey just did?"
"Nope. What did he do this time?" says the man.
"He just swallowed one of the balls off the pool table, whole!" says the bartender.
"Yeah, well I hope it kills him 'cause he's been driving me nuts" says the man.
After finishing his drink, the man leaves.
A few weeks later the man returns to the bar with his monkey. After ordering a drink, the monkey starts running wild around the bar again. Up on the bar, he monkey finds some peanuts. He grabs one out of the bowl, sticks it up his butt, then pulls it out and eats it. The bartender is disgusted.
"Did you see what your stupid monkey did this time?" he asks.
"What now?" responds the man.
"He stuck a peanut up his butt, then pulled it out and ate it!" says the bartender.
"Well, what do you expect?" replied the man. "Ever since he ate that pool ball he measures everything first!"4 -
So, in the printing industry, FTP has a long and storied history as the standard method of sending art assets. But as time has gone on, more and more people are utterly incapable of handling FTP.
Customer: "I sent you the file. It's called xyz.zip"
PM: "I don't see the file."
Customer: "I know I sent it."
PM: "Let me check with IT."
I check the logs. No such file was uploaded.
PM: "What program did you use to send the file?"
Customer: "Firefox"
Every. Fucking. Time.
It turns out the Germans actually have a word for this:20 -
today a coworker came to me. he had some ideas on a program i made for him (he had the thoughts i did the programming).
he is really thankful for this program as it helps him a lot with his daily work.
we talked about an hour: he told me what he wishes and i explained him what i can do with my abilities.
after this talk i had like 8 to 10 changes to make - more or less big.
from 10 am to 2 pm i managed to work off 5 points, built the release and did the update on his pc.
been a long time seeing someone so happy :)
that was a great feeling. now i get some beer. cheers guys2 -
Guy I work with: Hey can I borrow you for a minute
Me: sure. What do you need?
Him: so this is a project me an the other dev worked on
Me thinking: Well I know he did it all and sent you the project so don't tell me you worked on it
Him: so we use it to do this and this and send an email to this new account I made because (2 minute explanation)
Me thinking: I don't care. Just tell me what your issue is! I already know what it is and does from what you told me the last time when you showed me. Which took an hour of my time.
Him: so he sent me this code which is called <Descriptive name> and in the method we have variables call <descriptive name> and it returns a <variable name>
Me thinking: You mother fucker! I don't give a shit what your method is named, what it the variable names are, and you don't need to read through every line of code to me! Just from the descriptive name you just said I know what it does! What the fuck is your issue!?
Him: we also have these other methods. This one is called <Descriptive name> which does...
Me: are you fucking seriously going to read me your code line by line and tell me what you named your variables AGAIN!?
Him: and we named this one <descriptive name>
Me: you mother fucker...
Him: and it calls this stored procedure. (Literally opens the stored procedure and shows me) and it is called...which has parameters called... And it is a select query that inserts
45 minutes later after he finishes explaining all 3 pages of his code and his 5 stored procedures that the other dev wrote...
Him: So anyway, back to this method. I need to know where to put this method. The other dev said to put it in this file, but where do you think I should put it in here? Should I place it after this last one or before it?
Me thinking: You fucking wasted my fucking time just to ask where to place your mother fucking method that the other dev sent to you in a project with only 3 files, all less than 500 lines of code with comments and regions that actually tell you what you should put there and 5 small stored procedures that were not even relevant to your issue! Why the fuck did you need to treat me as a rubber ducky which would fly away if you did have one because you didn't have an issue, you just didn't know where to put your fucking code! FUCK YOUR METHOD!
Me: Where ever you want
Him: Well I think it won't work if I placed it before this method.
I walked away after that. What a waste of time and an insult to my skills and really unchallenging. He's been coding for years and still can't understand anything code related. I'm tired if helping him. Every time he needs something he always has to read through and explain his shit just to ask me things like this. One time he asked me what to name his variable and another his project. More recently he asked why he couldn't get his project he found online to work. The error clearly stated he needed to use c# 7. His initial solution was to change his sql connection string. 😑
He should just go back to setting up computers and fixing printers. At least then he would never be in the office to bug me or the other dev with things like this.7 -
I have a college that never seems to answer anything fully, just the bare minimum to make it seem like he did.
Regular conversations with him goes like this:
Me: “hey, I have a problem with this feature you added, I’m getting an error *insert error*”
Him: “yeah theres a script for that...”
Me: *wait for the script he mentioned*
Me: “whats the script?”
Him: “it’s FixIssues.sh”
Me: *looks for the script in the project*
Me: “hey, I can’t find it, where is it?”
Him: “here it is” *pastes a script into chat*
Me: “Oh, where can i find that in the project?”
Him: “you can’t”
Me: “???”
Him: “I have it in my OneDrive”
WHY CAN’T YOU JUST SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE? Why this song and dance every time I ask something? This conversation could have been over in 1 minute but instead we both have to waste 15 minutes of our time to get this far.6 -
- If I buy x amount of ram | hard drive space | cpu power I will never need more.
- No need for version control | Tests. This is a small project
- git commit -m "changes" (its a small change. I will remember why I did it)
- It is too obvious that I put a lot of personal time in this so my boss will definitely notice!
- Why comment this simple method? Anyone should know what it does. Especially me!
- "this should never happen"
- This call can't be from work. Everyone knows I am on vacation.
- I will back up next week. It's not like it is going to crush today.
- It’s 11:30 already? I will work on this for only a half hour more and then I will definitely go to bed!
- This project will take x amount of time!2 -
WTF - I discovered that wasps listen to me!
Earlier when one came in, I tried to catch it with a glass and release it, or kill it if that wasn't feasible. This year, I tried pointing to the window and ordering "get out!" just because I was too lazy to take action. Of course, I didn't expect it to work, but it did. I thought it was only a coincidence, so I kept trying it. It works every single time!
Crazy shit!13 -
This is probably gona make me sound arrogant, but fuck it, you don’t know who I am, and I need to RANT!
I hate it when B.A.’s who have never studied UI or UX rail-road over my design decisions, and I just gota go along with it cos they in charge.
Then, when I make the interface the way they want it, all sorts of problems arise… Mother fucker, I saw this shit coming, and that’s why I designed it the way that I did.
Now I gota tell them how to solve the problems by doing what I originally said, and when they finally see the light, I gota waste more time re-doing the interface.
I once went through 5 fucking iterations of “Let’s try it this way”, Just to end up back with my original design spec cos these fuckers can’t even imagine what shit would look like, and how it will interact.
Now you would think after this happens a few times they would learn to trust my design skills, but noooo, Mr B.A. has to piss all over my ideas every time.
And every FUCKING time, we end up going back to what I originally proposed…
Learn your fucking lesson dumb ass!!!
*drops mic & goes straight to the bar*9 -
For the hell of it, I decided to see what would happen if I did the infamous sudo rm -rf /*
This laptop had Kali on it from a while ago, and I wanted to throw Arch on just for fun experimentation purposes.
It was pretty interesting, watching everything disappear, and then it froze, at which point I restarted it and was greeted with this.
Bored science has concluded, time to do more bored science.5 -
Story #1: So I took a month of parental leave. And was planning to extend it a little longer to deal with my final exams. I was planning to spend lots of quality time with my wife and newborn son. Little did I know... It turns out that out of 5 OoO weeks I was looking forward I actually had 3 at most. The rest I've spent working remotely as I was insisted to deploy a brand new and poorly tested feature to PROD 2 days before my paternity leave. So I spent 2 weeks debugging things in PROD. Remotely. Needless to say that did suck.
Story #2: After story #1 I've learnt my lesson. This summer I took 3 weeks annual leave to renovate my apartment. I asked to not to be disturbed unless there's an emergency. And an emergency it was. One of our app users had a planned hi-load batch job lasting for 2-3 months. Hundreds of thousands of items had to be created and processed. It turns out the _processing_ algo had some flaws and was acting out. I was called out and asked to assist. I knew this sort of debugging is going to take a lot of my time so this time I put my conditions on the table: I will assist but I'll extend my leave by 1.5 the time I spend working now. They took the deal. Instead of 3 weeks I had 5 weeks of vacation!
I don't care that much about my salary. I prefer to exchange it for my time off hence I didn't ask for compensations.
Bottom line: NEVER EVER underestimate or undersell your time and effort. You are a valuable asset and if the team/client needs you on your day off -- make it count. Your time off is YOUR time. Never forget it.3 -
Our PM is on vacation. And our CTO/CEO takes control of the PM role.
So today he decided it was time to just start a customer change request. Regardless of the customer not having approved the actual solution and estimate.
He just said that he did not want to waste any more time talking to the customer. Now they are gonna get what ever he thinks they want.
I predict this to backfire in a fabulous way. What could possible go wrong🤔4 -
Second day on the job, only one with no real degree in software development (did much stuff in free time, just finished school, got the job mainly because i knew people there)
So you can imagine that they were sceptic about me.
Chief executive whatever told me there is a problem with some JavaScript they can't fix cus there is no time and shit for that.
I was like ALL IN and said i could do this in a few mins.
Fixed it in 20 mins. Everyone was cheering. I was like "Well it was the right decision to not do my homework back in the days.." 😁1 -
Yesterday (or the day before that depending on your timezone and day-night schedule - this Friday) my OnePlus 6T arrived. After only 2 days of time between placing the order and actually getting the phone, quite impressive!
The DHL guy asked me upon receipt - is it the OnePlus 6T? - Yes it is!! - "An amazing device it is!", he said. And honestly.. he couldn't be more right.
I might be a bit biased on this because after all I did just spend €630 on this phone. But it feels so snappy, high quality, the 8GB of RAM is just.. it blows my mind. But I'm sure that the other reviews did this sort of jazz already.
The things that set this phone apart for me though were the following.
When I get a new phone or tablet, usually the first thing I do is rooting it. This one was no different, about an hour after receipt it was successfully rooted and loaded with Magisk. Currently I'm still in the phase of "getting to know the phone", wherein fuckups are usual. This time again being no different - I removed some apps and apparently did something to it that the search engines - both Google and DuckDuckGo - didn't quite like, as both of them would crash upon application launch. Me in full panic mode of course, desperately trying to find the stock ROM (which doesn't seem to be present in its usual form) or a new set of GApps (which didn't resolve the issue). OnePlus does seem to offer its OTA updates in zip archives though. So I downloaded its latest update (same as what was on the device) and applied it.
That's when the nerdgasm happened.
The "update" was simply a matter of going into the settings, tapping this and that and applying the update. No recovery, no unrooting, no nothing. The update just went like that despite the phone being rooted and just having had TWRP flashed to it. I always wanted this sort of thing, which even the Nexus couldn't offer - having the cake and eating it too. Being able to root the device and muck around with it while still being able to update the device timely without too many hurdles. This fucking thing does it!!!
That is to say, after my initial nerdgasm I did find that it bulldozed over my su binary (effectively unrooting the thing), custom emoji I've set (iOS 12 because fuck Google's most recent emoji set) and some other things. But those are easy to install back, much more so than it would've been to download a whole Android release and dirty flash it, as it was on the Nexus.
Other than that, battery life, dash charging (edit: on that topic, it does remain cool like a cucumber despite getting 15-20W of power jammed into it, quite impressive!), snappiness, the usual jazz.. eh, as I said earlier that's the usual reviewer stuff. But this feature of being able to upgrade the phone while it's modified, that's something which seems to be severely underrated by those.
Oh and during kernel builds, I couldn't quite get the source to work - probably due to my lack of experience with builds of Android kernels - but I did find that this phone actually exposes its kernel config through /proc/config.gz as it should. None of my MediaTek devices do this, so that's something that I found really appealing. Always nice to see when a manufacturer exposes this information to give you a stock sort of config that you can be rest assured will work configuration-wise. And it allows you to see what the stock kernel is actually built with, which again is really nice. I quite like this! It really encourages further development.11 -
HR: "Thanks for reaching out - your resume is quite impressive! Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's a great fit at this time. We'll be sure to keep you in mind should our needs change in the future though. Good luck!"
Me: "It is unfortunate to hear, but I appreciate the reply. May I ask where exactly did I fall short, so I may be better informed and prepared for the next time I apply anywhere?"
Let's see how this goes. Biggest hurdle? Landing the first job, I swear :(5 -
I used to think Electron apps were gonna do great and make it more accessible for companies to produce high quality programs with ease.
Oh boy I was wrong. All it did is enable big companies with the ability to refactor all of their software to run 5 times slower, consume 10 times more memory and kill your battery 20 times faster.
I fucking hate all of this prototype fast optimize later bullshit. Can I get some value for my dollar? How come technology is just being degraded for the same of "ease of programming".
You save programming time but sacrifice end user time, cus our time just doesn't fucking matter.10 -
This one time I developed some useful plugins and a command line interface for the platform we built at work.
Then when it was done I thought it had some good value so I created a pull request to donate it to the platform. That same day I got 3 complaints that my pull request did not conform to conventions and that there was no ticket for it and they complained about the fact that it made their jobs harder.
It was in fact the last time I developed something for work in my spare time.1 -
Beware, this is gonna be a long one.
Today, in university, our professor wanted us to do an algorithm where a number was given in input, and we had to see if that number was, as she put it, "triangular".
For example:
3 is triangular because it's 1+2.
6 is triangular because it's 1+2+3.
10 is triangular because it's 1+2+3+4.
And so on.
While she was explaining this, I was programming it on my phone (because I didn't bring a PC there).
In about 10 minutes I completed it.
This student who was beside me, which I didn't know until today (I'm still in my first year here), saw me programming it, and when I finished it, he looked at it and said: "It takes too much time, like this."
So he spent another like 5-10 minutes """fixing""" it, and then showed it to me: "Here, now it's better."
Do you want to know what he did?
The only thing he did was putting a for cycle instead of my while cycle.
And he didn't even do it properly!
He put an else statement inside the brackets of an if, and some variables weren't correct.
You call that making a program more efficient? Deficient is more like it.
Also, like 5-10 minutes after I did it on my phone, on my own, I looked at the prof's desk: a guy (who apparently is "the best") wrote his algorithm on the blackboard, and the whole fucking class applauded.
Later, I saw on our Whatsapp group that someone sent a photo of him writing on the blackboard, with the caption "The student surpasses the teacher." Others agreed.
I replied with: "For the record, I did this algorithm in 10 minutes."
An asshole replied: "You'll never be superior to the master"
Fuck off. -.-"
...I'll show them.22 -
99% of our server-side code is Python and PHP (legacy applications).
Asked a junior dev to make a small update to a PHP site so we could have it run some cleanup server side. Plenty of existing PHP code to look at and piece something together. Should be 50 lines max.
Did he use the existing PHP code to do this task? Nope. Did he at least use Python? Nope.
Node.js
His response?
"I couldn't figure it out and Node.js seemed to have good support for mongo so I used that instead."
We have 0 lines of server side javascript. Never had node installed. Literally none of the devs use node here. Not only is this completely outside of our tech stack, but he had to take the time to learn Node and JS just because he thought it was easier.
Much would of rather he put in twice as much time to learn the tools of our stack.8 -
*gets countless amounts of shit with Windows because of my "nonstandard use"*
WanBLowS fanbois: "Cheap hardware!! Hardware error!! Unstable drivers!!! Can't be anything else, this OS is rock solid."
I really wish that I had your ignorance. I know when I see a shitty OS in front of me. And mind you, it actually ran Linux a while back.. just that I couldn't use my Nvidia GPU in it and had to compile a kernel with all of that crap excluded to make it work decently.. fuck Nvidia. And you know what, it actually did run fucking rock solid!!! But over time I lost the config and X.org doesn't like my dualhead setup all that much, especially the ultrawide display.
So, how about we address this issue for what it is already. THE OS FUCKING SUCKS!!!21 -
So I met this Professor in my campus recently.. This life-changing conversation followed :
Prof: What are you doing on your laptop?
Me: Sir, I am practicing some coding problems.
Prof : Coding problems? What's your branch?
Me: Electrical Engineering.
Prof: You aren't expected to code. And you aren't taught much coding in your coursework too.
Me : Sir, I take it as a passion and I did learn coding all by myself.
Prof : Rubbish. Learning coding by yourself is similar to saying that you don't require a Prof. to teach you. Just focus on your subjects and stop wasting your time.
Me :Good afternoon, sir. You're right, I did waste my time here.
*Grabs laptop and leaves, hoping he won't be taking any lectures in my next sem. *16 -
Porting over code to python3 from python2 be like:
(Cakechat, in this case)
Day 0 of n of python 3 compatibility work:
This should be _easy_, just use six and do magic!
Day 1 of n:
Oh, true division is default instead of integer division, so I need to replace `/` with `//` in a few places.
Day 2 of n:
Oh, map in python2 behaves differently than map in python3, one returns a list, other an iterator. Time to replace it with `list(map())` then.
Day 3 of n:
Argh, lambdas don't evaluate automatically, time to fix that too.
Day 4 of n:
Why did I bother trying to port this code in the first place? It's been so long and I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT IS BROKEN BECAUSE THE STUFF RUNS WHEN I BREAKPOINT AND STEP THROUGH BUT NOT WHEN I RUN IT DIRECTLY?!
Day ??? of n:
[predicted]
*gives up*
I've had enough.4 -
Every time someone rants about Visual Studio I'm like: WTF are they talking about? it is the best IDE I ever used!!
but now after using VS 2017 I must say:
WHAT THE FUCK MICROSOFT DID TO THIS THING! IT RANDOMLY FREEZE EATS OUT ALL CPU AND NOW USES A GOOD 1.5GB RAM!
my previous experience:
barely 20% of CPU
at max 700MB RAM
Guess those days are over :\13 -
Definitly !rant; btw long post ahead
Soooo not so long ago i joined this community by chance just cuz i installed some app randomly found on google store and what can i say. Best decision ever!
I can say i never met such an interesting and diverse communitiy ever and i kin of ground fond of it (i usually dont get too attached to peoples).
After a while i felt the urge to get myself involved into some disscusion at some random post and i did it. But it felt empty as my image was just a plain green bubble of anonymity. But yeh, i am cool with it, i will customize it after some ++es. No problem!
I got incremented for a while and i got to make a simple generic avatar. I felt again a urge, but this time to customize even more. Sadly, anything cool needs approval by the people. Soo i kind of let it go as i am not really the kind to find myself talking in other businesses and i moved over.
Until i saw it! Not the tiger, not the bird but the dog! Annnd i wanted it so i made a joke that i am a wizard with an invisible dog. What can go wrong, right? Well the thing is.. it did not go wrong, as expected, but it went great, kinda unexpected.
How? Well, some random stranger felt me and gave me a hunble chance to get closer to my dreamy real dog. And so it begin, my crusade to get that damn dog!
But what i have realised fast is .. this is not facebook! Nor Instagram! People doesnot upvote attention whoreing or such lowly acts, but they are actually prone to support people who just.. get involved.
And so i did. I got involved. I actually got involved in a community! For a awkwardly introvert person that's something, but maybe more than few of you people can relate to this.
And today i finally reached that goal! I have a real doggo! Well, real as in not invisible, not as in a great responsability, but now i have both. But this was not such a big deal. The big deal is that i found people whos interests are alike to mine and are prone to help, support and befriend others. I must say, thanks to all! Wonderful time, and while i am not here for a long time, i will surely be!
Cheers and dev on!15 -
sometimes in my head i go through code i wrote some time ago and think: "did i think of this case? if that happens something could go very wrong." when i look at the code i see that i already thought about it and catched the case back then. then i am like "daaaamn i am good".
do you know that feel? :D1 -
So in the 2nd grade of middle school.our classes had computers with projectors and teachers would present on them. At that time I was still a beginner in programming and knew some basic cmd commands, so before our teacher had come to class I went to the computer desk, opened cmd and then executed this command “shutdown -s -t 36000” which basically shutdowns the pc after 36000 milliseconds and then the teacher came to class and started explaining us a new lesson on a power point and half way through the power point the pc suddenly shutdowns and the class got wild. and no one admitted who did it so all the teacher did is to say” who ever did it pls don’t do it again”. Like wow...😂😂😂4

It is once again that time of year when we say farewell to our current interns and say hello to a brand new batch.
The two groups overlap for a few days. During this time the old interns show the new interns the ropes, while the mentors silently weep in the lunchroom having realized that nothing that they've said over the last 12 months has had any effect whatsoever.
Some choice quotes:
---
New Intern: It says 'uncaught exception'.
Old Intern: Oh don't worry that will fix itself on production.
---
OI: Did you pull the code?
NI: Yeah, but I have all these weird brackets everywhere... [merge conflict]
OI: Oh yeah that happens sometimes, just delete them.
---
NI: It says "push to master rejected". [we enforce code reviews]
OI: Ohh that means the server is broken. You should tell someone, they have to reboot it.
---
NI: Where did that file save to? [we use ONLY macOS and Linux]
OI: C:\Users\<your name>\My Documents\...
---
OI: You can use either pgAdmin or MySQL Workbench. I like Workbench better but I couldn't get it to work, it kept giving me errors.
---
And of course...
---
OI: No, we don't use Linux. We use CentOS.

I did the math today. Only 35 more years and I can retire.5 -
The time when we were not aware with advance features of IDE and version control.
(3-4 days before the project demo)
Me: This code was working fine last time. Now it is not compiling. Has anyone did some changes?
Team member: I corrected some spellings. So that our teachers don't correct us at the time of demo.
Me: (shocked, expression less ) We demo the application not the code. And you have not corrected on all the places.
Team member: You should do the rest.
(Based on true story) -
Coworker: We you have to estimate these tasks.
Me (thinking): This task should take one day, but I'll add 4 hours in case something unexpected happens again.
* Estimates 12h
Coworker: Alright, the tasks for this sprint have been selected. Please start to work on them.
Me: * Starts working on certain task
* Sees time available for task
2d 4h (=20h)
* Writes coworker
Dude, that much time is overkill for that task!
Coworker: Yeah, the client said something similar.
Me: Then why did you estimate it that high?
Coworker: 🤷♂️
Me: Ok, what am I gonna do with all that extra time? 😑
Coworker: 🤷♂️
Thanks mate.
Around 4 hours in and almost done. What should I do with that extra time?
Task in question: Add a mutually exclusive field to a database table, add it to the form, test it and update the docs.

I got my first programming job half a year ago, the lead developer there is really fucked up... he is old fashioned and stubborn as hell. He developed a platform that is a mess, his comment: “it works”... but now I have to fix it... I argued with my boss and convinced him to put more time in making it more scalable and feature proof. But the lead developer back then... he didn’t agree it seems like he want to do everything as quickly as possible... now half a year later he stopped working for us and I’m the lead developer now.
And I’m discovering more and more bad decisions... HOWWWW
WHAT DID THIS GUY DO???
At one time I was arguing with him and he backfired a comment: “I’m doing it like this for 10 years”... so I guess that’s the problem... he didn’t put effort in keeping up with the latest developments...
There is literally no structure in his work, every file is different... HOW DO I FIX THIS IN A NICE WAY??? I’m thinking to just start over again...11 -
Sad story:
User : Hey , this interface seems quite nice
Me : Yeah, well I’m still working on it ; I still haven’t managed to workaround the data limit of the views so for the time limit I’ve set it to a couple of days
Few moments later
User : Why does it give me that it can’t connect to the data?
Me : what did you do ?
User : I tried viewing the last year of entries and compare it with this one
Few comas later

This is the last straw. I am so done with Chrome.
…
I woke up AGAIN this morning to my MacBook shining away brightly, having not gone to sleep the ENTIRE night. I did some better research this time and discovered it's actually Chrome that is causing this.
Yes Chrome is deciding whether my MacBook goes to sleep or not.
I am not ok with this. Worse, it doesn't even have any ability to change this behavior. It's basically a hidden "feature" of Chrome: it wastes your hydro too!
This is not the first time this has happened either. Last time my MacBook wasn't properly plugged in and it completely drained the battery, shutting it right off. I ranted about that already.
But I am just SO fucking livid about this right now. What on EARTH is going through google's mind that they think this is in any way even REMOTELY acceptable?
I've already filed a bug report but I think this is the last straw. I am just sick to death of Chrome. This bug is literally costing me money and damaging my property.
Shove it right up your fucking ass, Google. Right up there and twist it around.
I'm switching back to a real browser.32 -
While I was in university, I used to be a good programmer (which I still am :D ), my friends used to copy my code for the assignments. One day, the teacher (one of my my mentors) called me in his office and said, "this is your code".
I'm like, in my mind, "How did he know this?"
The teacher said, "If you let others copy your code one more time, I will fail you".
I nodded my head in affirmation.
Later I understood that I've been a "Clean code" principle follower even before I knew this term. So, it was pretty easy to differentiate my codes from my friends. The teacher is really a genius ^_^5 -

I'm an idiot. I freely admit this. I spent a solid 3 hours on a new endpoint in a WCF service, only to have it looked upon and told to fix it. I knew that the service I was calling didn't work like that. I did, I knew it. I didn't think about it while coding the endpoint, but I knew it. At least the changes only needed to happen in one file, and only took about 25 minutes with tests and all. But damn it, I knew better. I looked at my buddy, straight in the eye, and told him "Told you I was an idiot." He laughed, I laughed, the table laughed, we killed the table. It was a great time!1 -
Java's shitshow, or why I'll never like java, the language:
The fact that you cannot read the length of an iterable at any point in time without iterating through it. Did I just read this from DB? Yes, I did. Do I know how many items I read? No. Why? Because fuck the designers of this shit language and all its shitty third-party libraries. 😠😠😠18 -
I found out last week that I was passed up for a promotion not because I didn't deserve it but because I got one last year.
My manager asked to have me promoted. People on other teams wanted me promoted. HR did not.
I wasn't mad about it at the time but the more that I think about it the more it's getting me down. I've been pushing myself trying to prove that I would be good for the position and now I have lost all motivation and I hate it. I like where I am at and I like what I do but this has really killed it for me. I'm struggling to get anything done now.6 -
Me : *trying to download latest version of android studio*
Google: "Your client does not have permission to get URL /studio/index.html from this server. That’s all we know."
Me: FUCK YOU GOOGLE
Me: *googles: دانلود اندروید استودیو* (which means download android studio)
*and downloads it from a random website*
It happens every goddamn time, why the fuck i can't download this shit !? Because these countries are fighting each other all the time! What did i do wrong in my life? I just want to download your fucking app to write another shitty app to continue my fucking life. I don't know shit about this wars happening, I'm just a dev like others all over the world.
Downloading an app, is that too much to ask? Well fuck you then.14 -
Hot take: Windows 11 is just to enable them to bake Teams into the OS like they did with IE.
They gotta get sued and split up this time! Their "Facetime" is skype and they had it preinstalled. Don't compare a business messenger to a private video chat platform!
I don't use slack, but they obviously wan't to win agains them by just making it part of the OS. This can't be legal!12 -
Necessary context for this rant if you haven't read it already: https://devrant.com/rants/2117209
I've just found my LUKS encrypted flash drive back. It was never stolen.. it somehow got buried in the depths of my pockets. No idea how I didn't look into my jacket for the entire time since that incident happened... But I finally found it back. None of my keys were ever compromised. And there's several backups that were stored there that have now been recovered too. Time to dd this flash drive onto a more permanent storage medium again for archival. Either way, it did get me thinking about the security of this drive. And I'll implement them on the next iteration of it.
For now though.. happy ending. So relieved to see that data back...

Weirdest coworker was at a tech support job I had when I just graduated from college. I was training this guy and he could listen in on my calls and my wife called and he heard the conversation (nothing there) and later he suggested I should encourage her to work in the phone sex industry cause she had a sexy voice. One time I saw pornography on his screen and with the supervisor's permission we did a search on his work desktop and found a lot of it - some that was really sick!2

So I was just wondering, do any of you guys know what happened to @BlueNutterfly, I mean besides her parents taking away a lot of her beloved belongings. How is she? Is she still on devrant? did she get her things back? Did she move out? The last time I saw her here is a couple of months ago. I miss her and I think a lot of you do as well. It really sucks what happened to her and nobody should go through these kinds of things, I really hope she is okay and moved out or does so soon. If anyone could shed a little light on this, I would be very grateful, I'm really worried about her.14

As much as I love Microsoft, they're really getting on my nerves now.
I didn't fuckin spend 499usd on a new lumia just to reset it nearly every month coz it decides to fuck itself up out of the blue.
What does microsoft support say to its random breakdowns? Oh um hard reset it. HOW ABOUT FUCKIN NO.
My on the ventilator lumia 1520 didn't give me these many troubles in years as much as the 950xl did in mere months.
I'm this close. THIIIIS close to return my lumia for an *gulp* iPhone.
Last time I used that monstrosity was years ago, iPhone 4 if I remember correctly.10 -
I finally built my own neural network model.
I did start this journey a long time ago. Maybe 2 or 3 years ago. My first ("undefined") rant :) was about it.

Did I ever say I love my PM? He's fucking awesome.
In the summer I got an internship at this company and the PM had plans to turn me into a permanent employee, junior position I assume. I told him I'd need a month after school started to see how things went with school and the job at the same time. In the end I decided I couldn't work full-time because I don't have time for it. Also, I want to explore a bit the CS field and see if there's anything else I like (quantum computing and low level programming are at the top of my list), so I decided I won't be renewing my contract as an intern either.
Last week I went into a call with my PM to tell him about all of this and I did not expect the response I got. He actually thinks I'm doing right and supported me in my decision to learn other things. I didn't expect this kind of response at all and it made me feel much, much better (I was pretty nervous to tell him). He also told me that if I want to work on something else in order to learn I just have to ask (I currently do web dev).
But that's not all. He gives us, developers, space to work and doesn't micromanage us. He has technical understanding, doesn't force deadlines on us and understands that sometimes things take longer than expected. He is just great and I'm kind of sad I'll be leaving this job because he's awesome and (from what I read here on devrant) that seems to be pretty rare.
Anyways, that's it, no anger or anything today, I just wanted to say I like my PM very much.4 -
So I have been looking for a job for so long now. I keep losing faith every single time I get the dreaded "thank you for taking the time to apply but we did not find a match for you at this time" I am having such a hard time staying optimistic!
I've seriously lived thru some fckd up last few years, my father died, my grandpa died and I didn't get to see either of them.
I filed for a divorce from the worst most scamming fraudulent person ever and have survived and have come out the other side, thankfully I am rid of him and all crappy people in my life. I did it all without a plan on how to make it all better, I just went with it by knowing I didn't know where I would end up but I sure as hell wasn't going to stay in that situation, nope, not a chance.
While going thru a contentious divorce and court dates, I was also learning to code--it kept me looking forward to something. Once I graduated and received my certificate . . . PANDEMIC.
Now I am competing for jobs with people with years of experience! how am I ever going to get a job in this type of situation?
I know this has to end sometime and I will eventually be able to get a job but seriously how do you stay optimistic with so many rejections non stop day after day?
this is horrible and I don't know what else to do. I'm glad I found this space for my rant.20 -
Some years ago our company site was hosted by a prick who knew nothing and started to pretend the server got a virus or whatever.
I tested their server and figured out they did not have any firewall policies going on like mitigation of ssh brute force.
It was at this time I learned about SYN flood, and boy I flooded that port 80 of them.
The company site went down for as long as I wanted.
It was great because now we manage it in house and never had a problem anymore. -
I am laughing and crying at the same time.
I did a high value transaction with Google Pay, and now I cannot see the transaction details in history for this specific transaction (The money was transferred correctly though). When I open the history entry, it says "Something went wrong, please try again".
So after waiting for a week, I went to report a bug with Google from within the app. And when I press submit, I get an error.
Wanna guess what's the error?
ITS FUCKING "SOMETHING WENT WRONG, PLEASE TRY AGAIN"!4 -
When the new keyboard you ordered arrives at work (it's for at home) and your team lead remarks 'that is a big dildo you got there'. I did fire back by asking him if he was jealous which led to sudden silence. Still disappointed in him, we do rib each other all the time but this feels sexist and inappropriate. I'm used to it and laugh it off but I'd still expected better of him.13

Wow i must have been brain dead when i wrote this code. Needed to exclude certain elements from response for the the list of objects.
for (obj : objects) {
If (obj.skipFromResponse()) {
break
}
add obj to response
}
I used break instead of continue at the if condition which meant it would break out of the loop at the first instance of condition being met.
This went through qa and has been in production for 4 weeks so how did this not break before. Well little did i know the list of objects was sorted and all the test data, qa data and everything so far in production coincidentally only had the last element with matching condition. This meant it returned everything correctly so far.
Today was the first time there was a situation where this caused incorrect output. Luckily as soon as I heard the description of the issue I remembered to check the merged PR and hung my head in shame for making such trivial error. I must have written way more complicated code without any problem but this made me embarrassed to even admit. 🤦♂️4 -
I wrote my first line of code at 12. I fell in love with it and continued. I'm 25 now and I'm a software engineer. I don't even have time or energy to work on personal projects anymore. Writing code isn't a hobby anymore. It's a means to survive. Why/how did this happen? When will building things be fun again? Before landing my first job as an engineer, not once did I consider salaries, equity, atmosphere, nor any of the other amenities (or lack thereof) of code as a profession. But, I don't even know when any of that fell into the picture and they've managed to suck the novelty out of a really cool pastime. I'm essentially a well-paid robot. Who did this? What's happening? What can I do to find the freedom I once had? When did I become just another cog in a machine? Should I try my hand in business, bent on making a lot of money so I can retire early and have time to experiment again? Is that unrealistic? Should I buy lottery tickets every paycheck? We only get one life and I realized this. I'm panicking because I know I'm not enjoying myself and that I'm not on track to leave the world better than it was when I was born into it. So much loss. I'm grateful, but this is not cool at all. I want my hobby back.15

FUUUU!!!!!! 3h of colleagues work gone in sconds.. & yes, actually it is all my fault, even though I was not aware of being a totall ass at that time..
What happened?! You know the ctrl+s shortcut?! Yes? Weeeell...doesn't go well with oracle sql developer and packages.. o.O
I was totally unavare that I was typing in ctrl+s ctrl+s all the time. I know I do that with c# code.. Anyhow, when I first moved to sql developer from other tool I noticed that compile thingy.. Oooops, ok, let's remove that shortcut to not stab yourself absentmindenly and overwrite other peoples work.. OK that's taken care of, shortcuts removed and I go back to work..
It's been almost 6 months since the move & first incident and today I guess I did the same.. ctrl+s.. But this time I wasn't so lucky.
Coworker pissed off, that is not my procedure. When did you compile?! Someone overwrote my code..
Wasn't me.. Then I started thinking about ctrl+s.. OMFG!! I check this on another package, it compiled. O.o I almost died. I check the shortcuts. They are back! And even after removing them the package still compiled.. FML!! 😭😭😭😭
I removed them again & closed the tool. Reopended.. BACK!! We're back to fuck your life up!! Fuuuuuuu!!
Now I worry wtf else I fucked up without notice.. o.O hopefully not much.. I hope.. O.O boss will kill me...
BTW anyone knows how to really get rid of this feature?! Cuz for me its a bug (since I am buggy and press ctrl+s all the time.. )6 -
User: "Why isn't this process updated? There's something wrong with your system."
Me: "Did you submit the request?"
User: "Uh yeah I'm sure I did..."
Me: "Go submit the request again." (they never did the first time)
User: "I don't know how. Will you show me?" *shows user how to do it* "Ok I did it now."
Me: "You did it wrong, you need to resubmit it."
User: "Ok I resubmitted it."
* a week later *
User: "The process still hasn't shown any progress."
Me: "You didn't resubmit it like you said you did."
User: "Will you show me how to do it again?"
* fuck me *
Me: "Sure..."
Process works as expected and everyone lives happily ever after, except the developer that knows it is just a matter of time till the next user blatantly lies, has no respect for anyone's time, and demonstrates a complete lack of desire to care about their job at all and just wants to bitch and complain like a typical lazy ass-hat.6 -
This fucking professor who doesn't go to classes and demands make up classes to catch up. Like WTF, So now you are taking our precious resting time where it is the only time we get our precious sleep? Fuck off. It was not our fault that you did not show up. I get that you want to catch up but taking our rest time is not cool. You are not the only one who stress us with fucking projects and exam shits...13

Using an array of function pointers to replace large switch statements... holy shit.. I feel like Thanos getting the time stone.
Just when you think you can’t get your code to run any faster, nor did I think I could get the code any smaller... BOOM.. C never ceases to impress.
Next I’ll be turning this into “object” oriented ... but since it’s C ... it will just be Struct oriented .. SOP ..18 -
Sent email to my parents this morning telling them to contact me by email since the Pie update broke my One Plus 6 (when I tried to reroot it but got a bootloop and restoring from TWRP screwed it up even more somehow) so restoring it.
First response from my dad: you can use my spare S9...
Yes he has a spare because he got it in a 2 for 1 deal... but I'm thinking uhhh..... It's not like I physically dropped the phone and cracked the screen... (like he did to his late 2 phones)... I'm 99% sure I can restore somehow... Like I did last time (a few months ago)7 -
Did I tell you that X third party system needed to be updated due to that pos using flash? Yes
Did you bitch about budget constraints and finding workarounds and stuff like that? Also Yes
Did I mention that X system was crucial for people and that we were not going to be able to do anything about it if we did not allocate the time to modify that before it happened? Also Yes
Did I mentioned this on multiple occasions? Yes
Was my team also pulled out from working on the alternative before this happened? Yes
Did I send multiple emails about this, talks, meetings and documentation of me saying all of the above? You betcha
Oh well 🤡6 -
God fucking dammit why are people so fucking lazy? A couple months ago I've had the intern refactor and organise this coworker's spaghetti code, and he did an excellent job, added type safety, etc.
I've took special care to explain it to this coworker that I understand he didn't have time to organise code and the intern took care of it, and to please keep it clean from now on.
Today I had to add a small feature to the same codebase, and every single thing that fucktard added from then on was crammed in the same file. And that guy's been here for 5 years already, I thought I don't have to triple check every single line he writes by now...5 -
When I landed my dream job in 2009 (which is also be my first job in the industry), I had no clue about python. The company just asked me three months after starting with them for something related if I'd like to join the automation team. It sounded like fun to me, so the company paid for me a private remote instructor for a week. Then I went across the world to the main office to work directly with our automation team for two weeks. I picked it up quickly and well (or so I thought) and was churning out scripts for a few years.
Through a series of unfortunate events, I and many others no longer work there. Five years later, I have a renewed interest in Python so I take online courses to relearn it. Why is it so much harder this time around? I do remember it, but not in great detail nor as well as I did, but I'm baffled that I'm struggling so much the second time around.
It's only Python! Still getting enjoyment out of it as I did before though.3 -
boss: “I’m conceiving a new policy for engineering. What do you think about these changes?”
me: “Looks good”
boss: “You hardly looked at it”
me: *looks for one second longer than I did last time* “Looks good”
boss: “Do you actually care about this?”
me: “Am I going to have to enforce this policy or interact with any aspect of what happens when it becomes official?”
boss: “No”
me: “Honestlly, man….I really don’t”.
boss: :( “Ok”.

After working 3 years in my current job and my boss hating anything to do with unit testing etc, I used my spare time to refactor our Makefiles to allow for the creation of unit and integration tests. I technically didn't tell my boss about it, so my heart was in my throat when he Skyped me with 'what did you change in ...'?
After having bashed any workflow with testing in it, I showed him the new workflow and automatic testing in Jenkins and he was actually enthousiastic, just like all other employees! I was hailed a hero in the R&D department, after all this time we can finally write universal tests. :D7 -
I just remembered something I did like freshman year of high school lol
So our school system had just adopted a new site blocking program. It did even better than the one we had used before it.
Literally every good site to play games was blocked, and it really pissed me the fuck off. I had an easy class that was in a lab, and I finished my work early literally everyday, so I played the games to kill time.
Finally I got fucking fed up, and I made a site using weebly where I put the games I wanted to play on it. This way I was in control of it, and I had all the game files on a flash drive, so if it got blocked, I could just keep making new ones.
It actually got to the point that after a week, a few of my friends were using the site daily as well, and they kept asking for games to be put on it.
Simpler times man, simpler times.2 -
Just saw the first Iron Man again, but this time in english (never did it before (I'm stupid (but french dub is pretty nice tho))).
Poor dude developed his first armor with some kind of Vista running computer, I can't begin to imagine his pain during the process6 -
"For me, it means..."
For me it was not one specific meeting, but rather a series of meetings with a customer over some years.
It was like the movie "groundhog day", it was the same all over again.
We had this technical term, and our customer had his own definition of what it meant and what it's supposed to be. No need to say that his definition did not match the one the engineers and developers of the world had agreed on.
At least a dozen times, i convinced him, but as soon as the meeting ends, it's all reset and we start at zero next time with his new or old definition of what a definition should mean. Sometimes i was just sick and tired of it so i let him explain how it is while i just stared into the void. Didn't matter he told me once, it will happen again next time again, like it never happened before.1 -
Me: so where do I change this variable?
Ex-developer: I have no idea
Me: okayyyyy... So where did you get this codebase?
Ex-developer: I created it
Me: and you don't know how to change this variable?
Ex-developer: honestly mate, I was pretty high at the time
Me: *hangs up phone*2 -
I received this special picture per WhatsApp. It changes its color the first time while downloading and the second time after you tap on it.
It goes from about #ff96e1 to #42000d
(Yes, I know these Thumbnail-Faker but in this case it keeps changing its color even after opening and closing the pic multiple times)
I did not find anything by inspecting it on PC...
Does anyone have an idea how it works?21 -
Fuck this day!
Like really fuck it!
I have one of the most terrible crunch-time i ever experienced.
I’v been working 12+ hours every day with an ever-changing project timeline.
It started simple, we made a timeline, it was risky even then but it was realistic, we started working immideatly, everything looked good then a few days in BOOM! Actually our project management completely forgot client B’s projects soo we need to do that too with the same fucking deadline!!! (About 10x more work in waay less time)
Then this morning i got an email from the graphics team that we need to document our design process RIGHT FUCKING NOW! Because management wants documentations, in the middle of a fucking crunch-time.
Today it almost got physical with my project manager, i told him that he is not a programmer, i dont fucking care about his shit, just fuck off and let me work because we won’t be ready based on his unrealistic bs.
I feel like completely fucked over, like we were told 2 days before deadline that the whole company and people’s jobs depends on us now because if we wont finish this clients won’t pay.
WE ARE TWO PROGRAMMERS for studio of 10-12 people!!!
Soo i’w been thinking about getting the fuck out of here ASAP, i got an offer from a pretty big international gamedev company just what i needed, i already did their test before all of this, i passed A+.
We scheduled a skype interview for today. I had completely no time to prepare or chill off, just got out of the office, got into a starbucks and i’m interviewing. No time to even check my mic or internet, the call was so shit i could not hear anything, they neither because the plaza was loud af. Meanwhile im nervous about work, about the interview, about can they hear me at all because of the noise. I fucked it up. BIG time! I was so done i could not reverse a fucking string in c++ or explain what is a signed int!!!
Needless to say they said no.
Need time to think about it or realize what happened? Nice dreams. Back to the office and continue working.
I can’t do this anymore. My girlfriend came for me and took me home at 10pm but all i could do was stare at the floor on the subway. I don’t want people to lose their jobs but i just phisically can’t do this anymore.
Meanwhile any time i talk to my project manager about being tired he says like “hshshsbsb i have 60 hours in the last 4 days i got the worst part, i would be grateful in your place..” like fuck off dude, i dont give fuck about how you feel about this. This is not okay for me, you did this to the project, your fucking job is to manage it! I have one day off before going back to this, i have completely no idea what to do now...
[ps: this is not Nemesys. They did not let me work on my own stuff because i would be a competitor, so i left.]5 -
!rant
Just had the best moment of my career today. Myself and two of my colleagues have been working on this system (firmware, hardware, web app etc) together and after months of hard work we finally saw it all in action.
My colleague turned on a device on the web site and it updated the db, turned on a light on his board and updated the devices state on the site (we use web sockets so it's real time).
I probably haven't did it justice here but it was flipping awesome!1 -
I installed WhatsApp after 7.5 years.
My family forced me to do so because they make all the plans there and I am left out.
I am strictly using it for family and specifically for cousins while ignoring everyone else.
While the group is inactive except for when we all meet (which is once or twice a year).
I am also on Instagram which is 99% of the time deactivated and the only reason I have it is when I did my backpack, I met some real awesome people and the only way to stay in touch with them was via Instagram. Too bad that I did not have it then.
Yes, you can hate me for doing this. But I need to get this off my chest here. I am integrated with Meta ecosystem, but I am making sure I tread carefully and take all measures to protect myself from any kind of damage.11 -
Yesterday I was hanging with the guys from our Records dpt in the staff lounge. Their manager is a pretty nice talkative guy. Everything was going well until this happened..
Him: Hey you, I have an idea for an app. You can"definitely" help me, right? Or someone you know who also does the code thing..
Me: It depends. Just before you tell me about this idea, know that you'll be paying me or whoever will be doing this job unt..i..l *he interrupts
Him: Paying? I thought it was a one time or few hundreds of dollars. Why do I have to keep paying when you haven't finished the app?
Me: Did you finish your entire work this week?...but you're still getting paid next week, right?
Him: Oh crap, makes sense. Ok, how about I pay you the amount you charge then, that's it?
Me: See, you don't get it. I know once the app is done, you'll come back to me to fix and update things. When that time comes, you'll have to pay me again. And with the initial payment, don't just think you pay me and that's all... you'll...
Him: Crap, I have think more and come up with a plan for this.. nevermind, I'll keep you updated.
I think I made him sad knowing that, this sort of things doesn't happen easily.2 -
Every time I tell a more senior dev I need help, they tell me to try the obvious things, I tell them I tried those things already, and they think I must have just done it wrong. So they spend an hour explaining to me how to do something I literally just did, and then more time trying the exact same things I just tried. Nobody wins.
Except for me when I find the correct solution while they’re re-implementing the failed solutions because nobody trusted me.
Sadly, this happens all the time. “Did you try a and b?” “Yeah, no luck.” “Okay, so when you try a, you have to remember to call c and d. Let me explain...”
So much wasted time. But the silver lining is in getting to be the one who found the solution (until they wonder ‘why’d she even come to me anyway if she knew the answer?’ ... 🙄) Because I trusted you to know what “team” means, and it’s not too late to learn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
Me: We did [technical debt] and [next feature] is hard to implement because of it. I suggest we do [actual 5 min solution] before proceeding to implement [next feature].
Colleagues: Agreed
Team Lead: We don't have time for this I dont want to change anything because the way we did [technical debt] already works besides we can [more technical debt] code go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr3 -
Tldr: I just FAILED AN EXAM because of my uni's SHITTIEST SERVERS EVER. YEAR AFTER YEAR THE EXACT SAME SHIT HAPPENS, THEIR SERVERS OR NETWORK FAIL HARD AND STUDENTS FAIL EXAMS BECAUSE OF IT, AND THEY NEVER FIX IT.
FUCK
In the middle of a 3h exam at uni, using Matlab through virtualdesktop, when suddenly it stops working entirely. Trying to restart it, no go. A few other people are having the same issue as well.
After 20 minutes of waiting, one IT tech shows up saying people in other labs are having the same issue, big problems.
Ended up wasting nearly an hour waiting for shit to work again - which it did, but only when the extra time they had given us ran out.
Desperately tried to salvage what I could of my exam, but I don't think I did enough to pass.
This is not the first time it happens. Exam after exam, shit like this keeps happening over and over again, and every time some students get fucked in the ass and have to take the exam again - the next semester.
This is supposed to be one of the top universities in the country, and top 20 engineering schools in the world.
FUCK THIS SHIT7 -
The first program that was used at a company.
I wrote it on suggestion of my father to help with simplifying calculations for rental machines at his work and once finished it reduced time from start to finished report from 2-3 days down to 30 minutes, and corrections could be done in minutes instead of starting all over.
It also featured saving and loading old reports.
And for context, this was 1987 and excel did not exist and existing spreadsheets was not nearly as easy to use.6 -
So I was looking through some old files, looking for some help while I was working on a project and I came across my first codes I wrote in school.
This one time I challenged myself and I tried to write the code a bit.....different. When i ran the code it worked as it should, no problems, then he said:" Show me the code how you did it". I giggled a bit and opened it up. I still remember the expression on his face. He wanted to say something twice but couldn't. Then he just sighed and said, please don't do that again.7 -
Did an app for my college.
Everyone liked the features in it.
But when it came to the money part, (I didn't ask the actual cost, I only asked then 10% of actual standard cost) they were like improve it more, do this do that ("for free").
I held onto "If you're good at something, don't do it for free".
Just wasted my time in developing that.2 -
Just lost my shit with a colleague which went for the Nth time "Oh MaN tHiS sCrIpT sUcKs So BaD".
Dude, I wrote the thing in 5 days, and back when I did I had no experience whatsoever with JS -or with programming at all, for that matter. It was pretty much my first project and I was as green as it can possibly get.
And yet, that script served us well for well over a year and a half without being touched once. It always worked for everything you could possibly want. Shut your mouth or do it yourself, buddy.3 -
@dfox bug report time (at least it looks like one)!
I have ~400 upvotes atm.
For shoes in pic you need 1500 of them.
How i did this?
I equipped them when they were free afaik.5 -
One coworker in my projects now.
I work with her on two projects. One project I'm doing a review on their test scripts and saw a lot of revision is needed on hers. It's fine, she may just need some help. Offered help and did sessions and gave explanations and samples. But she is still not finished. 2nd project I was acting like the project manager until the official PM gets assigned. Her tasks is just to create test data.
Little did I know she has escalated the 1st project to her team lead and manager and requesting for a project change. This is not the first time she did this project shopping bit. But what irks me the most is doing an emergency leave so you don't have to attend the meeting on one project you are failing and then not telling me as the acting PM on the 2nd project that you have an emergency leave. She may likely never thought there is need to tell because she did attend the meeting for the 2nd project later in the day. But for the 1st project I have to pickup her slack and do the test scripts because the PM in that project already was informed about her leave.
This would have gone to daily rant but she is the first one I've encountered who fails and somehow gets away with it and even gets promoted doing the same tactics. But she did that to our junior resources in other projects who may likely got burned out and resigned.
Crappy performance should not be rewarded. I hope this time our management won't look the other way.5 -
Hello everyone, first time ranter here! I have been studying Computer Science for 2 years starting September. The program introduced me to Java,HTML,CSS, JS and php. I feel like even though I am currently studying this I still do not "know" how to code. For example when I look at my classmates when they code it all seems so effortless and smooth, if they run into an issue they will usually solve it within the hour where as when I run into an issue I struggle to even see what the problem is. So the real point of this rant is, how do I improve? I am currently doing the #100daysofcode to get better but sometimes I feel so far away from calling myself a "developer" what is your road to the "developer" title? did you struggle as much as I am at the moment? or did you just sail into it like my classmates?14

Colleague while reviewing my latest commit.
Him: Hey, RemusWasTaken, why did you leave this debug log in here?
Me: That function won't work unless I leave that line exactly there.
Him: It can't stay, come here so we can fix it.
Three hours of debugging later, this Friday afternoon.
Him: Okay, I give up. Let's leave it there for now.
Me: I did the same thing yesterday. Time well spent.
Nodejs is weird sometimes, or we are incompetent devs.5 -
Last day of work. Literally only few more hours before I give up this lifestyle. Feeling little emotional as i look at the screen of my work laptop. It's a Windows 10 Lenovo ideapad .
Gonna miss those days when it made me mad bugging with updates. But it has been good to me, did more than i expected from it. I kept it turned on since half year or so and contrary to popular belief about it's race, it never disappointed me. We had our little secrets going on. Time to wipe them off and say goodbye. 😿3 -
I've started to do some time tracking and just after one day of doing it I noticed that I can't get more that 10 mins working without someone interrupting me.
I love to help and hate to say no, but this is killing my productivity and delaying my work.
Most of the time my help isn't really needed too. "Did you clear the cache?" "Did you run yarn install after pulling?" "Let me look at the stack trace/error message." Sentences like these are all I need to say most of the time.
Did my coworkers get lazy because I'm there to help? Should I start say "not now" more often? Or should I just look for a better team somewhere else?5 -
I just fucking hate BGAs* that unsolder themselves.
So, thanks to my laptop slowly breaking apart I decided to reactivate an old netbook my father gave me back in 2014(?) when it failed, to have a device on standby if necessary.
Wasn't really planning to repair it and kept it for spare parts mostly as the whole device is a fucking design failure concerning heat dissipation.
But yet again, I thought I'd give it a try one-two years ago. I soon found out it was said heat problem that caused the error in the device and it'd probably only take some reworking using a heat gun, which I did. Netbook worked for some hours, then was dead again, same error. Lost motivation and stashed it until this week.
Reworked with a hair-dryer this time and it worked! Well, until this morning - same error. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried to run a VM and then shut down the device right after that.
I will now try only one more time, this time just baking the whole damn main board thoroughly.
Either it works or it's really dead after. Either way, I'll be somewhat happier then.

I don't like interview coding challenges. At the same time, given the skill level of some developers I've worked with who work for a contracting firm and presumably didn't get a coding test in their intervies...I understand the necessity. Some people are so bad at coding that even the simplest of coding tests can show how bad they are.
I think my favorite is being given a simple task to write code for. And that's it. No "use this specific language feature to do this specific thing". Just a task and that's it.
I got a really simple coding test once. I had to reverse a string. I could choose any language. Presumably they wanted to see loops or something, but I just used Python and did this: string[::-1]
I got the job.3 -
It's so annoying when your colleague dev says: "It's just a 30minutes task, I'm sure you'll do it in lesser time" NO I CAN'T!!!
Did anyone else had this kinda situation? :/6 -
I just made a terrible mistake 😬 finishing my Android app for school project on my Ubuntu, Android Studio opened, trillions of chrome tabs opened, Spotify opened (it's a must! 🎶🤘), simply typical school project coding. Then I wanted to fully complete design and I remembered I did some prototypes of that app using JustInMind on VirtualBox win. So I without realizing what monstrosities are already running on my poor laptop I booted it.
I'm using Ubuntu for five years now and this was the first time I had to hard-reset it 😬😬 lets hope to never do the same mistake again2 -
I must admit I like Microsoft a lot, but today, I hate them. Yesterday the Windows 10 anniversary update was pushed and I was forced to install it. As I had a day of meetings I did.
This morning I started my laptop and and browsed to one of the web apps I'm developing for my client. The website didn't work. Turns out Microsoft uninstalled all specific Windows features, such as IIS, MSMQ, and much much more. Guess I'll be spending my time this morning or day to reconfigure my system. Happy anniversary Microsoft.6 -
The only reason I ever switched to windows 10 was because I only use it for gaming and because DX12 would only get support for win10.
Then I realized: DX12 has been out for almost 3 years and there's only about 30 games that support it. There's only a handful of games that require it (which are of course Microsoft games I'm never going to play). I did some research and apparently most games even perform worse when running in DX12 mode.
I have been using win10 against my will this whole time now... 🤦🏼♂️1 -
"Yesterday "
Client: ''Perfect! How did you do this do quickly? "
Me: "I used a library"
"Today "
Me: "I'm still debugging. It will take some time"
Client: "well, It has already taking too long.... I can hear Mozart in the background. Maybe you need to go to a library to get some quite and get it done fast. Visit the one you used yesterday. "
Me: "library?Ahh... I meant plug in like.... Code, a library is a bunch of packed code. "4 -
HELL FUCK AND HELL YEAH AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME!
Why? Well... You maybe remember that I Posted a Rant where i said that i Stream EVERY 3D Print i do. And... That I wanted to make an Easter Bunny, that failed... Failed Horribly... and thanks to the Fact im streaming everything i could just REWIND the footage AND FOUND THE ERROR! AND IM SO FUCKING GLAD THAT I DID THIS!
GOOD DOCUMENTATION IS A MUST FOR EVERYTHING!!! DOCUMENT YOUR WHOLE FUCKING LIFE! JUST FUCKING DO IT!3 -
I was wondering how people can hate other people. That was weird to me, but now I unterstand these people.
I begin to hate people, too.
Not only because they are stupid, but also because of their irresponsibility, ignorance and incompetence.
Here I am taking my time to finish a school project which is to create a video about stock shares etc.
I did the planning, did the editing of the audio files, put my own part (imagea and own audio) to it and right now I am editing it.
One guy from our group is being a bitch and does not record his voice to a few documents which will barely take him 3 minutes. I did 8-9 minutes of talking, for the records.
Because of that dip shit, I am wasting endless time waiting for him to get his shit done. I need to create the video. I have a personal life, too.
I gave him a deadline, because he was procrastinating. If he does not make it to this time, I am going to record his part on my own and give myself all of his credits. Done.4 -
Okay it's FUCKing rant time... FUCK you prestashop!
FUCK your utterly bizarre "coding standard"
Also a big FUCK your config files, since when did config files start to include application logic, multiple includes/requires and modification of super-globals. When did I miss that memo?
This file is full of so much FUCKing horseshit, my FUCKing testicles hurt.
FUCK your "module overrides", yes let's duplicate 20-30MB senseless horror code into another folder, just so we can modify one line, without having future updates breaking our stuff.
And your attempt to migrate to a symphony stucture is FUCKing pathetic, do it properly, or don't do it at all.. FUCKtards..
I know wordpress can be bad, but this...
Prestashop takes FUCKing lousy, headache/cancer- giving, piece of crapware to the next FUCKing level.
I wouldn't even wish this FUCKing upon my worst enemy.2 -
Spent 5+ years tolerating the bullshit of this guy (ex boss) and looks like it was a useless addition to my network.
I always got high praise from him and my colleagues and PMs. However, that never translated to good hikes/promotions/any favours of any type. Except for one time I never protested this because I saved the mental stress for other more important things (and that worked out well for me). It allowed me to sort of strut about the place like I own it and that was cool.
But today I needed to encash a favour from this reptile. And it was trivial enough that I thought I could count on that snake. But he did what he always does. Offered a useless alternative to any actual help.
So he helped, tried 'his best' according to 'policy', but I have to refuse it because it's like asking for water but getting air in return. Fucking chode.10 -
I feel fucked, I feel fucked right up in the ass.
Remember that app I had to do to get the job? I found out the other candidates weren't even able to install Android Studio and that their deadline was postponed. And that they weren't able to complete the app.
I did everything with a really good design, solid programming, even added animations and made it so the recyclerview loads 15 items at a time while you scroll down smoothly. I. DID. EVERYTHING IN ONE DAY. I missed a good night of sleep.
I didn't get the job. They gave it to a fucker that was a web developer. I saw his app. It was really crappy (I'm not being petty or malicious, it was really bad from a dev point of view and a user point of view).
I feel. Disappointed. in this unfair world. And honestly I feel disappointed to the point that I don't even know if I should be a developer anymore. I feel betrayed by the hopes and the good feeling I got from the oportunity.8 -
I don't fucking see how others get their stuff through code review, if when I make an enhancement it gets stopped for stuff other people did before me. Like, at this point it seems like I'm spending more and more time refactoring than simply doing the requested enhancements.
I don't blame the team, they're going off of the documentation. But this is getting ridiculous.2 -
After exhaustive talking to my boss, who always expresses the same concerns, we always end up agreeing that we need to separate development across our coworkers competences ...
We are even gonna hire a full front-end developer this time (as we did with the last 3 hires)..
And what did he do you may ask...
Put our front ender in charge of:
- Build a api in python
- Build the front-end
- 2 months deadline
The front ender is smart and is constantly asking me stuff and learning a lot.
But wtf boss? I could do it in no time...
I literally spent this whole week doing nothing, waiting for some approvals...
He is making everyone unmotivated as fuck ...
I'm starting to wonder pretty fucking every time if he is genuinely retarded.6 -
Welp. My mental health is down the drain.
I don't want to talk to anyone about it, but I am well aware of the situation. I can't even bring myself to sleep on a proper time frame, and depression is crawling back like an abusive ex.
There. Complete failure. Where do I sign out for this life?
Footnote:This is not fishing for attention, more like ranting in the void. (or trying to) Apologies to the one who I should've probably talked to about this, but never did.27 -
Phone rings...
'I'm calling about the car accident you had recently that wasn't your fault.'
Me: 'Yup, ok. I'm surprised at how quickly you got through!'
Them: 'Could you tell me when the accident was?'
Me: 'This morning before work'
Them: 'And whereabouts did this happen?'
Me: 'My living room'
Them: 'That's strange. Were you driving at the time?'
Me: 'No, I was on foot, I generally am in my living room.'
Them: 'Were you injured?'
Me: 'I sustained some pain in my foot'
Them: 'So you were hit by a car? Do you remember the make and model?'
Me: 'Yes, it was a red Ford, but I'm not sure which model.'
Them: 'Did you get the registration number?'
Me: 'I'm not sure it had one. The car was quite small'
Them: 'Did you get the driver's name?'
Me: 'It was James Jones'
Them: 'Could you describe the driver?'
Me: 'About two foot tall, blonde hair, green top, dungarees'.
Them: 'Did you know the driver?'
Me: 'Yes, he's my two year old son'

Just spent an entire night eaning up my codebase...
I optimized some of the functions got rid of unnecessary global variables and changed up the whole file hirearchy so it would be easier to read. After spending all night doing this I went to run the program and for once it seemed everything worked right the first time! However a portion of my application that is supposed to happen at a certain date and time never would run. After spending all night comparing each and every line for what I changed versus my last commit I couldn't find the fallacy in my logic. Everything should still work like it did before. After spending more time looking for bugs I finally realized I didn't break anything when I switched over to this new structure it was the old code that was broken. I went through the old code and after some debugging eventually found the culprit an extra continue statement that prevented my loop from fully executing. Lesson learned sometimes the biggest bugs can spawn from one line of code.4 -
Me: *working on a project for a year solo*
Management: Let's move development to consultants
Me: I don't think we'll profit from that
Management: Yes let's do it anyways
Me: *switching between project management and working on another project for 6 weeks*
EMERGENCY MEETING
Management: We're not getting enough output
Me: What did I say?
I'm so fucking tired of this project fuckery. Cred to my boss, she's great, but this time they should've just listened to me.2 -
"We need this project done by friday"
When:
Requirements changing on a daily basis.
No standards whatsoever, anywhere.
5 different people commiting changes with no code review.
Original team leader quit a month ago.
Current team leader doesn't know our own deadlines.
QA looking at layout through a microscope at every single possible resolution. (please move this 2 pixels to the left between 934px and 936px range)
QA being too vague some times (this looks weird some times)
Same thing being changed back and forth because no-one could agree on how exactly should it look.
PM implying at every chance that I did nothing and what little I did broke everything all the time.5 -
As a dev, I never want to personally talk to Clients anymore.
I had this Client for whom I developed a website for a tool he was making. I did the front-end work, did the backend, added the shop and everything he asked for. I showed him everything so he could see for himself what was done and how it all works. He went ahead and tested the finished product to see if there were any bugs.
He came back to me and wanted a call on skype and I joined the call. He shared his screen to show me that when he resizes the browser, the content of it gets bigger and smaller according to scale. I worked so hard to get it responsive and whatnot, and he tells me that it is doing what it is supposed to do. I die inside every time I think about it2 -
Hi everyone, long time no see. Hope you're all doing fine! 💙
Here's an actual rant: I don't know if I chose the right university course, anymore.
I chose "Informatics", but there are so many subjects that aren't even related to Informatics, and still I have to do them because that's how it is. I just wanna do programming, because I like the creative aspect of it.
I'm getting sick of this to be honest... I'm at my second year, now, and I feel like maybe... I should've just studied programming on my own, and seek a job without going through university.
Though, that being said, I may just be temporarily having a bad time. I don't know, ok?
It seemed I did okay, in my first year, I completed 4 exams out of 7, but now I don't know anymore.
The exams for this semester's subjects are coming up in a couple months, and I haven't exactly learned much, y'know...? I couldn't follow most of what the professors said in the lessons, for whatever reason (some professors talk too quietly, some don't explain well, etc.).
What was your experience with university, if you ever went there? Did you find it helpful, or was it a waste of your time?
Thank you for reading. I hope my next post will be more joyful, sorry for being like this. Love you all! 💙7 -
I think I'm getting fired. My manager is pushing to have a meeting. Although we also have 1:1s but he is asking for it this time. Never did this before.
My company have a firing culture. I'm not very positive about everything. My performance was satisfactory last year, but I couldn't do much this year.22 -
“We mob every thing so that means we don’t need pull requests, because by the time the code is committed it’s had plenty of pairs of eyes on it”
Well, I beg to differ.
Today I read through some of this spaghetti mobbed code to look into a performance issue. Wasn’t supposed to but bored stiff so I ‘went dark’ and did it without the mob.
After about an hour I figured out it runs a few lines of dubious code and if there’s an error it tries many times over with an exponential back off.
And each run of the methods will fail for sure because of how it’s written.
Someone must’ve seen this problem but instead of realising it can never work, they’ve wrapped it in retries and back offs.
So many back offs and retries that it just sits there doing this for 25 minutes.
But yeah. The mobbing works great guys, keep churning out this quality code. 😂😂😂
Can’t wait to see the back of this joke job.4 -
For some project, I wrote this algoritem in Java to parse a lot of XML files and save data to database. It needs to have some tricks and optimisations to run in acceptable time. I did it and in average, it run for 8-10 minutes.
After I left company they got new guy. And he didn't know Java so they switched to PHP and rewrote the whole project. He did algorithm his way. After rewrite it run around 8 hours.
I was really proud of myself and shocked they consider it acceptable.4 -
I was told the other dev hadn't enough time anymore to maintain this 20-year-old project, because he did it in his free time and we should transition from working together, learning the code, etc to me maintaining the whole thing with the other dev providing the knowledge about his program.
So, we had one meeting where I got the current state of the program and never really heard from the other dev again.
This thing was written in C and quite a mess (it still is, who needs refactoring...) and I have never programmed in C before. Needless to say, I learnt a lot.7 -
this www.xmlrant.com project I created turns to be quite a learning experience
*happy*
Things I did for the first time as part of it
- submitted a public nuget package
- worked with .net core library and mvc application
- integrated mvc's app github repo with continious integration platform appVeyor9 -
Upgraded from a gen 6 motherboard and cpu to a gen 11. And the difference is asounding.
My old setup did everything I needed it to pretty well. Hell it got me through college as well as multiple part time and full time jobs. As well as the system that I learned about 80% of what I know specifically for my career
But alas the old cpu's age started showing and I'd consistently throttle multiple threads when compiling or even just using 7z on large folders. Hell deleting anything above a couple hundred mb would pause for a few seconds
The new cpu is immensely faster on such tasks (probably cause of the extra 2 cores and cpu improvements since gen 6)
I haven't been this excited since I got my first SSD a few years ago and saw the immense boot time improvements. Maybe soon I'll get an nvme drive and really be zooming with this setup 🤣🤣🤣6 -
I'm back. I'm the old itsnameless. I left programming because high school stuff. It was just overwhelming. I, slowly, left programming until the point I forgot everything. A lot of evaluations, high school stuff just for remembering NOTHING. The only thing I did this year on high school was losing a really big part of my time remembering weird stuff.
After all this stuff, I would love to spend my 2 months vacations mostly in the place that I've met lovely, awesome people. That place is called devRant.
So, yeah, hello there.
P.S: Of course after the vacations I'll still be here. lol10 -
1) Submitted my CV
2) Got an email to schedule a phone interview for the next week, I gave ~5 appiointments on the next week that were good for me
3) Next week passed, no answer to my E-mail, I asked in a mail, what happend
4) Got reply, that we should schedule the phone interview for the next week
5) We aggreed, in the appointment, they did not call me
6) I asked in a mail, what has happened
7) We aggreed in a new appointment
8) This time they called me, after a short conversation I was told, that I they send me task as homework right after the phone call and I will have to do it in one week
9) They did not send it
10) Next day I asked, whats going on
11) They sent me the task, and said that I can ask them, if have queations
12) For me it was not clear, if I was allowed to use frameworks for the task, so I asked it
13) I neveg got reply and did not ping for the 4th time
This was the most annoying and ridiculous recruiting process I had to deal with. It was just a waste of time.1 -
I did a project once and it came back to haunt me - this is how I got the job I have now:
I was already working for the company, in the second year of my vocational training as an electronics technician when I got a assigned The Project.
In brief, The Project was a kind of measurement automation implemented with some arduinos. I was tinkering with them at the time in my free time so they must've thought 'Hey, great, she can do that, so she can also do The Project!'
Just that I couldn't - after investing nearly a year, getting frustrated because of the lack of time, support, knowledge etc. The Project died quite unceremoniously and I resumed my training normally.
I just wish devRant already existed back then, it'd have made up for some spectacular rants - The Project was fucking nerve-wrecking due to incoherent behaviour by some hardware and I had to battle the whole big, ugly thing more or less alone as an apprentice.
If it hadn't died at the time it did I feel like I would've brutally murdered it with a shovel - that is, if someone actually would've cared enough to buy me a shovel.
But it ended and I let it go.
In the last year of completing this vocational training, my feeling of "This is not enough" and growing boredom with the routines of my future job had manifested. I wanted to go back to university but also continue working at the same time.
I wasn't ready to do freelancing nor did I want to quit at that time - most people there are amazing and I'm still learning much from them - so I asked early for a student position and got one.
And to get some continuity in my work, it wasn't just any student project I was assigned to but The Project. It came back alive, laughing at me, leaving bodies of dead electronics in its wake, after all these years.*
And that's how I got my current job.
*(They asked me if I was OK with it and they dropped the Arduinos and other hardware in exchange for a bit more software. Also I have a team of great engineers which I can ask for help anytime should I get stuck, so I got that going for me which is nice.) -
Woke up this morning to my Macbook completely drained.
Again. 😒
Turns out my USB-C cable had dislodged itself.
Again.
But what *really* pisses me off is why the fuck is my computer completely drained overnight? Did it have the screen on the whole time? I swear I've come down in the morning and the screen on my Macbook is still on. I wouldn't be surprised.
Apple is really losing their touch.1 -
Any Haskell programmers here?
I started to learn this language for fun two days ago and so far I find it absolutely amazing and really different to OOP languages. Most of the time the solutions make so much sense, but actually coding them requires really abstract thinking of the problem. How fast did you learn Haskell? How long it took you do code it comfortably? Any advises you can give me? I work mainly through a uni exercise sheet from a friend from a different uni, and the rest is hoogle and google :P10 -
Last night: Wow, I just finished that massive feature and I still get some time left! Why not play something?!
Oh crap, this game is so cool but my video card drivers needs an update (AMD Radeon on a Fedora system).
The proprietary drivers don't run on this version of Xorg server... Fine, let's search for some solutions online and... Hey! Found it! Let's see: downgrade Xorg, download the driver, patch it for your kernel version...
Did I just fucked my display? Oh yeah... Let's try to fix it........
Fuck...
5am: Finally got it all working perfectly again... Fuck this game, I hate it!3 -
Fucking cant solve productivity problem. Since I was working as programmer, about 8-9 years experience, constant complaints about my productivity and some jobs even fired me for this. Only one job did not complain and I worked in it longest time but still I was worrying very often about my productivity. It is fucking annoying. Why others are productive and I am not. How the fuck to find biggest bottlenecks to know which to work on.
I know I am not knowing technology perfectly, and from time to time I get stuck and so I ask other people help, or somehow manage to find solution myself but it takes more time. But dont know if that is the biggest issue. Should I intecify my learning? I am regularly studying, and working with symfony about 2 years, so I think I should know enough to be productive even with those strugles from time to time. But maybe they are too often?
I have listened book "deep work" and basic thing I think from this is - to minimize disctractions and learn to focus very well. But to minimize like in this book, I should work alone in my room. And even then I would like each hour for few minutes to read some new or smth, which this book says is bad, but a lot of people do that and they somehow get away with it. Plus if I work alone in my room, my social skills might get worse, and we all need social skills, even programmers.
I so envy to others who know how to be productive. I would hate if the only thing to be more productive is to reduce quality of the code, make more bugs. THats fucking cheating system.20 -
QA personal voice assistant that runs locally without cloud, it’s like never ending project. I look at it from time to time and time pass by. Chat bots arrived, some decent voice algorithms appeared. There is less and less stuff to code since people progress in that area a lot.
I want to save notes using voice, search trough them, hear them, find some stuff in public data sources like wikipedia and also hear that stuff without using hands, read news articles and stuff like that.
I want to spend, more time for math and core algorithms related to machine learning and deep learning.
Problem is once I remember how basic network layers, error correction algorithms work or how particular deep learning algorithm is constructed and why is that, it’s already a week passed and I don’t remember where I started.
I did it couple of times already and every time I remember more then before but understanding core requires me sitting down with pen and paper and math problems and I don’t have time for that.
Now when I’m thinking about it - maybe I should write it somewhere in organized way. Get back to blogging and write articles about what I learned. This would require two times the time but maybe it would help to not forget.
I’m mostly interested in nlp, tts, stt. Wavenet, tacotron, bert, roberta, sentiment analysis, graphs and qa stuff. And now crystallography cause crystals are just organized graphs in 3d.
Well maybe if I’m lucky I retire in the next decade or at least take a year or two years off to have plenty of time to finish this project. -
You know, I really like my Redmi 4x. It's a nice and inexpensive phone and perfect for me. Now I wanted to get the most out of my phone by rooting it, which was going to be easy.
I thought. And lord almighty was I wrong.
First of all, to even get to root it you have to unlock the bootloader. To do that you have to use a tool that they've made. Good! An official way to do so would surely be good, I thought. But to actually use the tool you have to be logged in to their service on both the tool and your phone. Then, and get this, you have to submit a written application as to why you would want to unluck the bootloader.
Ohh but it didn't stop there. I did so and months passed without me getting any info from them what so ever. When trying the tool it would just tell me that they hadn't reviewed my application.
Today I tried again, and something new happened. It told me that I hadn't synced my accounts. Which I promptly did because it's progress.
I tried for what should be the final time, aaaand I get this. This according to the forums means I have to wait 72 hours to be able to do it.
But it's progress, right?

its been there since many years, but:
When did we turned the wrong way and made it acceptable that Windows can blantly say in my face that i cannot deactivate the transmission of data unless i have the "Business" Variant of their Software. Its called Windows 10 PROFESSIONAL. Why are there no international Laws against that? Where was the molotov throwing mob when this became the norm?
Additonally. that cute telemetry service consumes a considerable amount of cpu and disk power from time to time.
and no, Linux is not an alternative. It never was. There is proprietary software and driver sets used for lab equipment and machines that cannot run under linux, noone will ever have the time to tool something for it and the user base is too specific to hope for any community solution.
sidenote: even Level 0 STILL transmits data. I want mode -14 -
This is one from when I was in school, so I wasn't a dev but it made me feel like a CS student badass.
A class mate and I were having a discussion about his study habits. Basically he was freaking about the mount of studying he was going to have to do for this class:
Me: dude, you need to relax. You'll do fine.
Classmate: no, have you seen the amount of work that is on the syllabus? The size of the book?
Me: wait you bought the book? Also we took this same professor for several classes. His syllabuses are always huge. What did you get in the prereq to this class?
CM: an A.
Me: there you go.
CM: but I had to study all the time. I had no free time.
Me: really? I had an insane amount of free time.
CM: what did you get?
Me: B+.
CM: See but I did better than you.
Me: yeah . . . but I had fun last year.
Professor: you know, it's hard to tell who is the better student. The one that had no fun, but got an A. Or the one that had a lot of fun and got a B.
Other Classmates: probably the guy that got the B.
Hurray for peer and professor validated laziness. -
I just wrote unit tests for like the first time in my life (didn't find it useful in university, someone else handing in the project always did that). It cut my coding time by a factor of 3! You should try this one if haven't already, it really saved me a lot of headache right now.2
-
PM: "Did you ever push changes for this one feature?" Me: "No. I haven't had time to even look at it. Everyone wants me to do stuff before my last day." PM: "okay so is it done yet or not?". If i haven't looked at it, if it's not pushed, HOW THE HELL WOULD IT BE DONE?!2

Found this beautiful piece of code, that I wrote apparently a year ago .... oh my 😂 🤦♂ 😅
If I could travel back in time, I would would slap myself for doing this. Although I remember, why I did this, because of many min()/max() operations that I needed. I wanted to keep the code, so that I would know, which code piece belonged to which part, but man ... is that badly written! Nowadays with Clean Code style, I would certainly do it differently.7 -
I don't like it when my brain goes on a self conflicting spree after I fix a bug.
*** Fixes a bug and commits ***
Oh wait, it works but what if this happens? It'll break.
*** Thinks more on the correct solution this time ***
Oh wait, what I did was right! NVM.
*** Another situation comes to mind ***
Start thinking again. Same outcome.
Go through this a couple of times.
Aah, screw it. Will see when it breaks!3 -
I love working doing tasks like moving boxes.
Move 10 boxes from point A to point B. Simple, you know what to do. and you know when you are finished.
I Hate tasks such as: Change this Icon to other icon. (C++) Because it takes me 3 fucking hours to find in code where the fuck this happens! And every time my first instinct when I don't know something is go to the internet and search for it. But in this case I CaN't!.
Wife: asking why I'm browsing the internet looking at memes.
Because I Don't Know where the fuck I need to be to finish my task! And I am stuck in this repeating loop of searching in code, looking at memes and being ashamed of myself that I did not this fucking simple task in like 10 minutes.
And after 3 hours of doing basically NOTHING. I don't dare to ask a colleague about everything.
Please send help....4 -
What the fuck this fucking shit of an app supposedly went through five rounds of QA and I broke it in 5 minutes? Holy fucking shit How this is the main point of your job. You shitty shits take forever getting this PR to me and now it’s buggier than a haunted house on Halloween?
After this is after wanting to cuss Apple for making me update the os then then xcode then iTunes just to recognize the goddamn development phone. It’s an app built off Cordova it works for like 14 versions of iOS just run the bugger you over priced aluminum chassis dildo riding fruit Fuckers.
Now back to the goddamn cluster fuck I just got delivered. What the goddamn fuck. This level of bullshittery I have not seen before. And apparently Cordova is only partly de-sandboxed? I don’t know for sure because I don’t have time to test it because I’m running the entire technological stack of this company on a junior dev salary!
When you tell me it goes though all this QA and you spend 2 weeks on just QA tickets for fucks sake the first operation I do, the most common fucking operation on the app, the shit we have been building around all this fucking time, should not fucking error out. For fucks sake at least try to get the main fucking thing working. I recognize you did a lot of work and implemented a number of features but what the fuck good are they if I can’t even run them for one fucking time. -

dev: but sr, we need to...
Client: what did i say? just stop saying things and build it!2 -
Long time no rant.
Here's the summary of a review meeting I & team just had with our programming prof:
"You did exactly what I taught you in class, and I don't like it."
"To get a better mark you should've done more than what was required."
"This wasn't a requirement. You should've kept it short."
except we asked about it being a requirement earlier and only got vague answers like "that should be obvious."
Also, printing a class diagram over 2 pages apparently is unacceptable and we should've gone to a copyshop to print that as one page instead.1 -
So with the advent of Docker Desktop going premium we thought we'd buy a couple licenses... What did the HR team say?
"No, you're fine - we can just keep using it - how will they know?"
WHAT??!!! I will NOT be the one who gets brought into a multi-million dollar lawsuit because HR are a bunch of nitwits. I will fight this with everything I have so that when ouch time comes, i can say i didnt participate in the shady bullshit these people are recommending.13 -

Well, let me elaborate. I hate *remote* pair programming. It completely disrupts my flow and wastes so much time with additional water cooler nonsense, and pedantic argument for the sake of participation. Not to mention "oh hey let me see how you did this... Oh, you know what, I think it would be better to do it this way...". Ok, great, we weren't even discussing that, but sure, let's completely detail this session to refactor something that could have come up at a good transition point, like I dunno, say a code review?
Like I said, there are very good reasons to pair program, but I would much prefer rubber ducking wherever possible.2 -
A client asked for a tool for his website. So I built it for him and he was satisfied with the thing, cause it did what it should. Nevertheless I was not, because it kind of had a messy backend. I made it working and charged my time. Now I am wondering if I should rebuild the thing to satisfy my code quality for free, or just keep that thing as ugly as it is....
What your opinion on this?6 -
!rant !dev
Finished side project last month. It was hell of a ride, about 300-350 hours of programming and solving problems per month for over half a year, including my regular remote job.
Side project was 1 hour commute time from my house.
There were days where I was working over 16 hours per day.
During this roller coaster I also changed my diet to keto and lost about 12kg / 26 lbs.
Kept my regular remote job where I am the only backend developer.
Donated to eff.
Started listen to audiobooks and exercise to keep my mind clear and focused.
Finally I discovered devrant.
It was all crazy shit and I feel happy I did it because now 5 days after I finished this side project I started to think that my life is not so fucked up I thought it is. This gave me my confidence back.
Now it’s time to rest before some new crazy shit would hit my life.
Peace1 -
probably every time I see my tests failing.
Each time I am writing tests I'm convincing myself "it's an investment", "spend 2 hours now to save 2 days later", "unit-tests are good".
And each time I'm chasing away ideas like "perhaps they are right, perhaps writing unit tests is a waste of time..", "this code is simple, it should ever break - why test it??", "In the 2 hours I'll spend writing those UT I could build another feature"
Yes, it is terribly annoying to write tests, especially after writing the production code (code-first approach). Why test code that you know works, right?
But after a few weeks, months or years, when the time comes to change your feature: enhance it, refactor it, build an integration with/from it, etc, I feel like a child who found a forgotten favourite candy in his pocket when I see my tests failing.
It means I did a very good job writing them
It means it was not a waste of time
it means these tests will now save me hours or days of trial-and-error change→compile→deploy→test cycles.
So yeah, whenever I see my tests fail, I feel warm and fussy inside :)2 -
So once upon a time I had this dream while I was sleeping:
I was programming this videogame while I was inside of it.
It was something like VR where I had a tron-like world and I was the god in there, I was able to make and destroy anything as I pleased.
What I did was making a sort of challenge where you had to destroy someone else's kingdom by accessing it via FTP and then just destroy the useful files to kill defences and then become an actual king of that place.
Once awake I started thinking of making this whole thing into an actual game, but then I started reading the documentation for FTP connection in C# (I was thinking about using Unity) and literally stopped thinking about making it.2 -
Was going through old photos from university time and...I present to you the result of deadline + lack of sleep + boredom + shitty university project because somebody decided that CS folks needed to learn webdev in old ASP.NET.
Yes that is one query. I wrote the entire thing out as a string in my C# program in one go and tested it by running it from the program. Must've worked properly because I got them grades so eh. I recall I had one nested seven levels too (this is just 5) but I can't find a photo of it. These two queries did all the business logic. Yeah.
Apologies for the poor quality photo of the screen, I don't have the code so no screenshot, this is just from my photos archive4 -
College came to me today with version 3 of an attempt for a bug-fix followed with the comment "This one should work, this time i tested it myself before commited it and came to you"
I just thought: then wtf did you do the previous two times? Just yolo commit it to the codebase?
Maybe its time i found some other place to work..8 -
Who the FUCK thought "let's completely redesign the Doodle mobile app and make it as unusable as possible!"?
The app RESETS every selected option EVERY time you switch to another app and back. Like yea, you don't need to use the calendar app to check at what dates you're available.
Fucking morons! What. a. shit. piece. of. software. How can any PM approve of this? I bet even ChatGPT could do a better job. Fucking hell. "Let's save money with developing hybrid apps! We have no clue how to do it right but: we spend less money, yay!" Fuck. You.
(First rant. Don't know if I did this right but I had to let this out.)2 -
I was scared shitless while installing the windows creator, that it might shit on my grub like the anniversary update did! I had to chroot, reinstall bootloader, and run mkinitcpio to rebuild boot and kernel images. But thankfully everything went on smoothly this time!11
-
So earlier my Windows 10 machine decided to crash to blue screen on me. First time I have seen a blue screen in 4 years. I thought, this sucks. I waited for it to reboot. I logged back in and saw it was busy doing "stuff". Then I heard the hardware attaching noise.
This is what I think happened. I think because I did an update the other day that it had installed new drivers. I think there may be some sort of driver A/B testing going on. So the blue screen gave Windows enough info to know which driver. Then when the machine restarted it either reverted to a known "good" driver or switched to an alternate.
I don't know if this is true, but it is a cool feature if it is. Do other OSes do stuff like that?6 -
!rant
So...i have lost the count of the number of posts ranting about W10 sudden restarts because of the updates. Many people lost their valuable work and many more were just annoyed by this occurence...
But it has NEVER happened to me. Every time there was a pop-up message asking me if it was an appropriate time to update. On some occassions i would postpone the same update for numerous times, and it still did not force-restart my laptop.
Question: Is my machine buggy or do people do not know how to set working hours on their machines and postpone their updates?16 -
Fuck,
I've been charging everything with the oculus quest 2 charger because it's very powerful but it just blew up my headphones. I did this often before but this time was a whole night.
I hope I can still get this great headphones, it had such good volume & bass. It's the cheapest Fresh & Rebel but the sound quality and battery is great22 -
This is why I love Mr.Robot. They hide easter eggs in there for programmers and such. I found this at around the same time as these guys did but they beat me to decoding it. https://m.reddit.com/r/MrRobot/...4

Well here it goes,
I started out in customer support (A lot of stuff to tell here).
1.
One of my colleagues would come to work drunk, like every day he would smell of boze (the hard stuff 80%+). When a customer got on his nerves he endet the call and threw his Keyboard across the room. He worked in the company 3+ Years after I left.
2. Another colleague would connect to his Personal Computer at his home and play WoW while at work ( Allthough the man was a genius with a lot of free time, until a new task was assigned to him)
3. My Boss at the time did some really shitty things. I worked 17 hour days (while I was 18) for a week, and at the end of the week he shredded the accrued overtime with some Bullshit Explanation. (I did not stay long after this shitshow happened).
4. A dispatcher who sent our technicians out scheduled their tasks so that they were on the road for weeks and did not see their families. This led to a very strong turnover among technicians.
And yes, this company still operates today.1 -
Everyone is going on about how suddenly finding a programming gig is or has become a lot harder why with the outbreak and the economic downturn it is going g to cause.
But realistically is it true? Did I just pick a bad time to start a new career in this particular field or is it just FUD?20 -
the api endpoint for retrieving user-data in an alexa skill might as well be api.eu.amazonalexa.com WITH .EU
this is not as good documented as it should be and did cost me several hours until i saw it by accident analyzing the request-data another time...
you´re welcome. -
I always thought I suffered from imposter syndrome until I saw what the previous developer on this NodeJS/SailsJS project did.
They put return statements inside of a switch block. He also put in the break statements as well. The return statements were the exact same thing every time it was written.
Fuck shitty JS developers....6 -
I just want to say it annoys the shit out of me that my B.Sc. Bachelor's degree in CompSci isn't enough for (ignorant) employers.
Now I have to waste time getting certs in fad languages (even though I did projects in them in college) just so I'm 'marketable' again. Man, f*** this bs.
Ridiculous requirements nowadays!9 -
If there was an anime Based on developers.

Dev : here comes my favorite browser.
Mouse : No, not until I'm here.
Hand : whattttt? What's happening??
Mind : oh NO!! I why's Internet Explorer is loading?!?
Faster Mind : it's mouse, he's behind all this. Only he's powerful enough to pull off something like this.
Time : Developer-san SAVE me!!
IE : it's too late now, if you do anything it will just slow everything down!!! Hahahah
Dev : No it won't, don't ever underestimate a true developer. It's not over yet!!
*Some keyboard key combination
Time : *screams* developerrr-saaaan!!
Hand : wait, I know it, it's happening. We can still save Time-chan.
IE : WHAT!! No, it can't be!!
Dev : here comes Ctrl+Alt+Del. Be gone....
IE : Nooooooooooooo, this isn't happening, Aaaaaa *dead*
Hand : we did it!!!10 -
JetBrains Fleet sucks!
It's absolutely gorgeous but it sucks, technically. I mean did nobody try to edit a YAML file with 2 spaces indent in there during development??
I wasn't even able to open a fucking project with it one time. And why in gods name does it go full macos with it's design?
Loving their IDEs, but da fuck's going on with this?14 -
I did it! I learnt vim!
...
Oh wait, how do you exit again?
This is how it feels with me and vim, every time I think I know it, it turns out there's a whole batch of shortcuts I had no idea existed :"(5 -

I am embrassed.. :(
Situation was..
It was 3-4 months ago I written the process but now client was saying it is not working so I just need to update value in array..
I spent 2-3 hours everything was good..
only in the statement where I am assigning the value is not working.
I was like dude wtf call your senior why its not working .. everything is correct.. then suddenly my eyes catch the rubbish thing I did..
this is what I used mistakenly for assignment "=="
:( and I was looking at statement from 1-2 hour.. it just wasted my time3 -
So here I work with this colleague that , at first , had a reasonable résumé. Whatever.
Time goed by and he is just doing tickets, clicking left and right, the usual grind of a shitty monitoring system which I am working intensely on deprecating that shit. Anyhoo
The last few days it became apparent that his resume was basically a hot air cake and he knows basically nothing intrinsically.
As I have stated before in previous rants, "everyone was a noob once"... But this guy...
He wants to do "something with Ansible"... "Ok what do you want to do?" , I asked (and I regret to have asked).
He basically wants to write new files on targets. Easy enough, I show him how he could do it with playbooks, inventory and role just for demonstrating the entire chain.
This guy chanes everything up, thereby breaking host group assignment, he launchea it on ALL machines...
Luckily it's a harmless file, so dodged a bullet there.
But the real wtf ia that he did it with the root account for our systems, without understanding the difference between "authentication" and "authorization"...
I am now explaining him what the difference is and how he can be able to check it. I give him the commands literally! ( sudo -l -U <user>)
Manages to fucking open up each sudoer file in vim , mistype or whatever he did in an attempt to leave vim... Breaks sudo...
Now he tries to spin it in such a way that I have steered him to break things.
"Dude you just fucking failed a copy/paste and you did absolutely fuckall without understanding what you are doing, then splurge out accusations because you did it wrong!"
FMLrant privilege escalation authentication authorization living eventually gets revealed colleagues without intrinsic knowledge breaking sudo3 -
Did you know that docker's ADD instruction uses "go-http-client/1.1" as user-agent when src is an URL?
I didn't. And since I'm unfortunate, enough so that this user-agent is blocked by my company, I've now spent twice the time it took me to write the whole dockerfile to identify the problem and fix it...
I love waisting my time for such minor things...12 -
Time for me to feel stupid. I have been reading here for a week, and only saw a way to do a -1 on a post or a comment. Turns out that Chrome is NOT showing me the +1 about the current ranking. I had to switch to Microsoft Edge to see it. I thought that I had to hit a certain plus level before I could plus others. ARGH!! So many posts that I have to find again. Why, Chrome, did you do this to me??5

I did it! I've finally figured it out!
I've always had this feeling that AvatarOfKaine reminds me of someone. Todaybit finally hit me - O know who it is!

Story time!
I was with some friends, one a CS student and the other one's a mechanical engineer student with coding like a hobby.
I was listening to a song from which the band released the stems (individual tracks) of a song, and this dude made an anime version of it.
Me: Oh God, this is awesome
Mech: how did he do that?
Me: What? The song?
Mech: Yeah, how did he split the voice and everything, is the music like an Ajax request and he queried for the voice
Me and my other friend lock eyes and began to laugh so fucking hard.
Me: that's not how it works, why did you though that?
Mech: I don't know -
So I recently finished a rewrite of a website that processes donations for nonprofits. Once it was complete, I would migrate all the data from the old system to the new system. This involved iterating through every transaction in the database and making a cURL request to the new system's API. A rough calculation yielded 16 hours of migration time.
The first hour or two of the migration (where it was creating users) was fine, no issues. But once it got to the transaction part, the API server would start using more and more RAM. Eventually (30 minutes), it would start doing OOMs and the such. For a while, I just assumed the issue was a lack of RAM so I upgraded the server to 16 GB of RAM.
Running the script again, it would approach the 7 GiB mark and be maxing out all 8 CPUs. At this point, I assumed there was a memory leak somewhere and the garbage collector was doing it's best to free up anything it could find. I scanned my code time and time again, but there was no place I was storing any strong references to anything!
At this point, I just sort of gave up. Every 30 minutes, I would restart the server to fix the RAM and CPU issue. And all was fine. But then there was this one time where I tried to kill it, but I go the error: "fork failed: resource temporarily unavailable". Up until this point, I believed this was simply a lack of memory...but none of my SWAP was in use! And I had 4 GiB of cached stuff!
Now this made me really confused. So I did one search on the Internet and apparently this can be caused by many things: a lack of file descriptors or even too many threads. So I did some digging, and apparently my app was using over 31 thousands threads!!!!! WTF!
I did some more digging, and as it turns out, I never called close() on my network objects. Thus leaving ~30 new "worker" threads per iteration of the migration script. Thanks Java, if only finalize() was utilized properly.1 -
So, I am currently on Spring Break, and what do I do when I am on Spring Break: I take a moment to experiment with different languages. This time, I decided to check out Objective C since it mixes up two languages that I love dearly (but that I do not use outside of academic endeavors) which are C and Smalltalk.
Going around the net I found this https://github.com/Flying-Toast/...
Notice: I have nothing against Swift, I stopped developing apps for IOS back when Swift was in its infancy, so I was forced to use Objective C and tbh I never had an issue with it, I had learned it before through GNUStep, the language was obviously strange when I started learning it, but I did not hate it, I tried following Swift to see if I could use it at least in some portions, but at the time of its release it was still pretty much beta for me, so I passed. I feel it is much better now, but the issues with the language at this point in time I feel are more from the side of XCode which can either be just ok, good or an absolute piece of shit depending on the release. Either way, I found the link to be funny.2 -
Anyone here have any experience with PHP? I've never really used it myself and don't really want to, but I do look at things like http://phpsadness.com/ from time to time.
These complaints range from "fairly minor" (some stuff like function names/args and some syntsx complaints) to "how is this language even used" (segfaults in a scripting language, broken things like "create_function", comparisons and ternanry operator).
Of course, i don't program in PHP so i don't know how bad any of this actually is.
Anyone actually use PHP or did use it previously?19 -
Okay, I realize that it doesn't mean anything, but I've been working on trying to solve this freaking Codility challenge for like a week and while I had a solution that would give me a silver award (the tests that weren't performance-based had me getting the right results, I just timed-out for performance tests), I really wanted to get a gold one. And I FINALLY DID.

Just in time for having to do a technical phone screen for a company. Maybe I'll go into it feeling like a competent programmer.7 -
I’m always tired all the time. Depression and what not but today I am TIRED
Had an interview that requires vanilla javascript but I suck at algos even tho I was getting it done till time ran out. We gelled tho so I hope they see potential and move to next round.
But the good news is. I had a follow up interview based on a challenge. It’s the second I’ve ever had and I did well this time.
So much so that they’re booking another interview for tomorrow.
So I’m done with the technical portions of the process.
This is the first time I’ve gotten this far and I’m so happy. I’m hoping really that this is the one cause I doubt I have the energy and will power to keep going though the processes.
I’m so excited. It’s as if all my work is slowly showing and I’m getting closer and closer
Wish me luck guys. Hopefully I ace it as I come across well In General Chats.
This is my last application. If it doesn’t work I think I’m done with dev life and job hunt.
Fingers crossed I’ve found the one1 -
Professor: with rm -r /* you can delete everything on your pc

(This is the third time I'm talking about the same question I posted on stack overflow this week, but things keep happening that pisses me off)
Me: *answers my own question, clearly says I tried deleting the php path environment variable and that it didn't work, so that's why I added it back and now it's working perfectly*
Guy: *downvotes my answer* "you need to delete the php path environment variable, here's how"
M: "I did and it didn't work, that's why I added it back and now it's working"
G: "well, you need to delete the php path environment variable"
YOU MOTHERF-
G: "You need to check for all the references"
WERE? You literally only talked about environment variables, I told you I checked those multiple times. Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, if I did I wouldn't be asking such a stupid question like this one, so maybe a little guidance? I mean, isn't that what stack overflow is for? To guide people who don't know how to do something? Don't just say "your wrong" when I said MULTIPLE TIMES I did what you said and it DIDN'T WORK.
Seriously, asking a question there was the worst thing I did 😑
Anyway, he didn't answer back and everything is still working fine, with the php path.1 -
Working as an cooperative student in an big IT company. I shall continue the work of another student (Something in Frontend Visualization) for their Sharepoint sites.
The other student wrote a fucking 40 page university evaluation (requirements, first architecture and sl on) about the concept of this project and did not have the time to implement it.
But instead of giving me this research paper, my advisors say “Be creative and don’t use this work. Do it by your own.”
wtf? Why has this student even done all of this work and why do I have to waste many hours in order to begin everything from day zero??2 -
For my fellow stuck at home Nintendo Switch owners: Ring Fit is legit af.
I am in good shape, but can honestly say that you will get a workout out of this bad boy AND by the time yo ass is feeling tired you will not notice it on account of the fun you will have.
Of course, not everyone will like it, shit, I know I didn't wanted to play it. But I did and I loved it.
I am Al, and I support Nintendo's agenda on getting switch owners jacked.6 -
Well, this happens time to time...
I'm freelancing as a backend guy. I like to take care of all infrastructure before really starting to build anything, this mostly includes dev/staging/prod environments with some linear promotion strategy. So.. I did this API. Still on staging, proceeding with the development as planned, everything goes according the timeline.
And then.. this happens... At some point PM told frontend guy that it's time for production (without notifying me), so the frontend guy does what "anyone" would do in this case - tells PM to create DNS record for production to point to staging app.
Time passes, I'm still unaware of this. But I'm starting to see some quality entries in the DB, not the usual QA crap. I write to them that they're doing good job and continue with my tasks.
One of the tasks required some major DB change. I could've written migrations script, but since we're not in "production" yet, I just wipe the DB and recreate schema as I need it.
In 10 minutes the furious PM starts shouting that "production" is down and I need to fix it ASAP.
I'm lost, I'm asking questions, I'm slowly understanding what's happening...
So I want to grab some coffee, sat back down, wrote politely that they suck, added a finger emoji and terminated the contract.
Felt like the right thing to do as I definitely don't want to continue within the same "team".1 -
Me vs. Code Moocher:
CM: Hey, did you do the Chapter 6 homework?
Me: Did You...?
CM: Yes... (with confidence but an odd pause) But it doesn't work.
Me: Sorry I'm not done with it either I can help you.
I hate people like this. He could've asked me for my help or waited to ask the Prof.
But he outright asked for my work. It wouldn't be the first time.
FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF MOTHERFUCKER!!!4 -
Put this as a comment but felt that it needed a post of its own.
I ducking love my fuck (see what I did there ;P) He my little coding buddy, I gave him a little back story and everything.
This is Francis (although he insists its Frankie) He transpecied (a duck in a penguins body) so he always has a "short-man complex" little attitude all the time (unless its because he never gets a word in before I figure out the bug myself =S ) -

Moral:If you have a little humor and skills, you WILL get the job
I started the job a week later and it was AMAZING
*Based on a true story*2 -
In the new job as "Consultant", one of my duties is to maintain the website. Now, the website is based on PHP 5.6 (which they are still using mail method) and without git or sg-git and of course, it is based on cPanel.
Now, I update the website in real time i.e. working on cPanel itself. This is because I don't do for the front end, I do it for SEO. So one day, they reported a "feature" as a bug and assigned it to solve me, I took my time solved it, they did not like it, I reverted it back and I had to listen to a lecture because I did not test it.
Imagine old "wise" ass hats giving a lecture which they do not know about in the first place, 12 of them precisely, yeah that's what happened to me. -
After all this time, I've finally managed to apply my programming skills in my day situation (thing I really wanted to happen).
A website had a block of text reeeally long and I couldn't select it all. Grabbed my terminal, opened vim and did a program to grab that block of text and save it into a file. Ran it and worked perfectly. I mean, isn't the best thing I've ever done but I feel very proud of myself. :) -

Manager: Hi
Manager: Do you know anything about this? <screenshot.jpg>
Me: Hi
Manager: Oh, I didn't mean to disturb you this late
Me: *what....? Then what DID you mean by writing to me at my bedtime....?*
(Though it's good he pinged me - it was a valid and time-sensitive concern. But saying "I didn't mean to" - that's just not true. Call a spade a spade and spit out what you need)10 -
So I just spent all morning struggling setting up a project and getting it to run. My colleague sent me a screenshot of the documentation wiki, but didn't give the link.
*4 hours later looks at email for the Nth time*
Wait he did... that's not a wiki, that's Readme.md... this is in the repo link right above it!
I didn't need to checkout the repo so didn't open it... -
After I have been using tabnine and Grammarly for quite some time, I thought I follow this years' hype and give GitHub Codepilot a try, before eventually considering chatGPT.
Added Copilot to my IDE, proceeded to extend behavioral test descriptions in JavaScript.
Copilot suggests the most redundant and irrelevant inline comments I can imagine. They would be a legitimate target of criticism in every code review.
Wasn't it supposed to add some code that's actually useful? Well, tabnine and JetBrains IDEA annotations already did that anyway.
What did I miss?2 -
Seriously, I got given a project that someone else was working on, it's beind and they're on long term sick. I did the project as discussed. My manager has decided he wants it done differently, wasting about a week of work. This is the same manager that complained about my rate of closing tickets. 2 weeks ago.
Malicious compliance time, I'm closing the current ticket and creating a new one for the new work. -
For starters - I like Windows 10. I seldom have any problems with it. But...
For fucking fuck sake how did this fucking happen. I tried to make a carbon copy of my small 128 SSD with Windows and Linux on it onto a bigger, 256 GB one using Partition Wizard. Something went so fucking wrong that Windows started showing me, for the first time in a looooooong time, BSODs. It wouldn't be so bad if after restoring Windows grub stopped functioning and now I can't access any OS on this drive. And all I wanted was to migrate to bigger disk...2 -
So it finally sunk in that now is not the time to develop a commercial app. I never did it because reasons (too lazy to explain it all), but I always wanted to and this time I was determined to do it, but it dawned on me that now is not the time. Right now I have to do well in college and learn as much as I can.
Sadly that sweet sweet passive income will have to wait, but I'm kinda excited. I have basically freed myself from the feeling of guilt of making slow progress on my project. No more of that voice in the back of my head "but I should be developing the project, not this random thing". Now I'll basically just try my hand at a fuck ton of stuff, see what I like, maybe get an internship with a teacher of mine, who knows.2 -
One of my favourite rant is this one:

I went back and looked at some code I wrote a couple years ago. It made me so sad... I well and truely did not understand a lot of core concept yet at the time, and I was stubborn and thought what I was writing was good and refused to start over or delete code.
This try block had 4 FileInputStream objects and I even have a defined branching statement which I never use.
Whoever marked this assignment probably needed a lot of alcohol.1 -

Sadly I did this to procrastinate writing my thesis. -
Created an affiliate tracker / split test tracker / campaign tracker for my Laravel project in 1.5 days.
Not bad, not bad.
Now, should I offer it on github? Seems like I might be kicking myself in the balls if I did.
On the one hand, I don't have a lot of time atm, on the other, I'd love to meet fellow programmers who seek out and would want this, and perhaps contribute. Could lead to some great partnerships down the line..
Anyone have experience with this? Did it take a lot more time than you thought, did you meet other programmers and ended up collaborating on future projects?
Curious.. -
I finally did it. I installed Arch linux + Unity 3D + VSCode + budgie + vertex + sddm-deepin in virtualbox....
What a fucking journey and a half that was.
Now to install on an ssd for real...
My thoughts on the process:
1.) This is not for the faint of heart.
2.) Be preapred to devote some time getting it all right.
3. This was actually quite a rewarding process.1 -
Episode 2 of taking a big ass dump. This time its 1:54 am and i had to get my ass out of the bed to throw this big nuclear bomb. My legs are once again numb and i cant feel them from dumping for too long. I had to hold on walls and crawl up the bed. But when i did get to bed it was majestic. Numb legs but i dont care. I took a dump and now im 10 kg skinnier and i dont care4

Dear xcode,
you fckn bitch did it again. I really wanted to do some iOS development, I swear. But you are like an abusive relationship, I have this weird habit of coming back to you even though I am getting fucked in the ass in parallel.
I love Swift but I despise you xcode. Randomly fucking up my workflow, and then it is clean build folder, reset package cache, restart xcode. Again and again and again you fuck things up out of nowhere. And from time to time, you just have to install the newest version of xcode because its so fucked up its easier to download this MASSIVE asshole than to even try to fix anything if you know its just xcode again.
Yeah, fuck extensions and formatting. Just fuck humanly tolerable build time. Fuck you xcode.
I am not an experienced dev with iOS nor am I a common Mac user but this is just wrong. I feel violated and the joy of development sucked out of my soul while I try to navigate through the overloaded interface.
I am not even going into details about iOS development, its just that xcode is the gatekeeper to get me the fuck out of this miserable place that is native iOS development.
Arrivederci, suckers.4 -
Working for the wrong manager in the wrong company at the wrong time;
This shit will rip off all your energy to code, no matter how crazy you are about it.
I did, and I am empty now.3 -
You might think that getting your work done super fast is a good idea but it's really not. It takes QA awhile to test your tickets and give feedback. If you clear your sprint board, PMs will add more assignments... Then on top of that extra work, QA will give you feedback from your previous work. You now will be super stressed to get all of this done by the end of the sprint.
It is best to take your time and get it right the first time... I've also learned to make a buffer... which is tickets in my queue I've already completed but did not say I've competed yet. This way I can take extra time on tickets that need TLC and the PM team won't surprise you with backlog tickets. -
So this happen to me today ....
I was hired some time ago to a company to make an App for Android and the app must interact with the Software of the company ...
There was needed to add some column into a table of the SQL DB for some features of the app to work better and an update as been submitted for the software (to be created the table) also. We told the IT department that they need to update the software first then the app on the android and start testing the new features on it ... they come to me and start complaining that the app didn't work as intended .... after 2 hour's trying to figure out what was the dam problem a thing come into my mind .... and I did ask if they did what was saying in the email, if they did update the software first then the app, and of course they only did update the app ...
Moral of the story, never assume that IT or other people it will do as it was instructed for the software work properly.
P.S. Sorry for my bad English :D1 -
Test: this time, I copy a line with line break, because, when I did this yesterday, it fucked up devRant web.
Not copied:
Five brave knights write code in one night for free, because they like it
Copied:
Five brave knights write code in one night for free, because they like it
Does this fuck up the web-version? If so, @dfox needs ta parsed a capied text and add the needed line-breaks...1 -
I always make sure i can code on Vacation on my own projects. The flipside of this is tho: i never take time off, since my work is rather relaxed anyways.
My employer messages me about that recently, that i still have 100% of my vacation days left, so what i did is using it all up until the year is over. Essentially im almost all the time on vacation until the end of the year (+ a little), and can work on my own projects. One rust project might be in a publishable state soon actually. -
Monday morning after working whole weekend to finish for release at Tuesday tidying everything up, optimizing, when I ask myself
"why did I wrote in ES5?"
*Checking the time*
"17 hrs left of this day, I should be able to make it!"
As if I didn't have enough problems with procrastination in my life. I sure can find more things to do
*Locking the door and turning phone off* -
I used to work with another dev who had memory problems. This guy *literaly* could not remeber what he did yesterday...
So, he was trying to change one of the password screens we had in the app. This was a really simple screen. Logo, password prompt, and two buttons. He worked on this small change for two days, but everything he did did not affect the screen at run time.
So finally, he gave up and called me to help him... I come over, and look at his code. It looks ok. I make a small change, and see what happens. Nothing. I think for a moment, and delete the entire screen UI elements. Run the app. Nothing happens - screen still the same.
Then I got it - he kept changing the wrong screen... for two days....
took me a whole 5 minutes to figure out.2 -
Tl;dr coding is awesome, but teaching good programming skills is fundamental. Take some time to teach and help someone in need!
This morning I had to help two of my students who were unable to write a simple program to simulate a random sampling. It reminded me of how helpless I felt when I started out, and how I felt stupid for not getting easy concepts (and now I'm in love with programming). Here on devRant I hear so many stories about bad programming teachers, but it doesn't have to be that way. I'm the most impatient person on this planet, but I love teaching and I wish more people did it. So, go out and spread the word, fellow devRanters!3 -
Some time ago Ex-Boss, who's also a Dev, asks for some opinions about which JS framework we should use in our next project. I gave my 2 cents about react JS and he said no, react won't be any good, we must use Aurelia because it is backed up by Rob etc etc. At that moment I thought: wth is he asking, if he has already made its mind on Aurelia? As at that moment react was getting some hype and I knew the features and advantages, I kept going. Boss, react has shadow DOM. React has this, it has that etc. This discussion ended up with him raising his voice, telling me he is much more experienced than me and telling me to GTFO. That's what I did. And thanks God I did it. I respect other opinions and beliefs but If I'm asked to give my own opinion I will, even if they don't like it.

No actual data loss here, but the feeling of data loss.
After having my data scattered across several devices i decided to get a grip on it use a cloud. I'm too paranoid for a real cloud so i used a local nextcloud installation. That was done via docker and with a 2TB raid1-array.
I noticed that after restarting the server the cloud was somehow reset and pointed me to the setup-page, afterwards my files were already there. It did strike me as odd but i figured "maybe don't restart the server in the next time".
But i did restart it. And this time i had to setup the cloud again, but my files were gone. I got close to a heart attack, even though all those files weren't that valuable. I ripped one disk from the usb hub, connected it to my laptop and tried to mount it, but raid array. Instead i started photorec and recovered a bunch of files, even though their names were some random hex and i knew i'd spend my next weeks sorting my files. While photorec ran i inspected the docker container and saw that there were only 10GB of space available. After a while and one final df i found the culprit: the raid. For some reason the raid wasn't mounted at boot and docker created the volumes on the servers hard disk, same goes for the container data. After re-adding the disk to the hub i mounted the raid and inspected everything again. All my files were still there.
At no point did i lose my data, but the thought was shocking enough. It'd be best not to fiddle with this server in the next time. -
Recalling the the time I was discussing a web dev based assignment with a classmate( And I wouldn't even go as far as to call it web dev, it was just making connect 4 using js and node).
Me: so did you get to implementing your game with firebase.
Classmate: no, but hey did you use loops for making the board?
Me: ?? There were like 50 elements ofc what did you do.
( Sigh* to think it's going to this)
Classmate: copy pasted
Yup 50 elements copy and paste. like the person I was talking to wasn't even incompetent I mean he had like a 3.5 gpa, how is there any correlation between this stupid number and how they actually code if you can't even code loops. The dude was a 2nd year student. And this wasn't even the only person I heard this from.
Apparently the TAs had to post about how to use loops in Js before we had our lab exam cause so many people copy pasted instead of loops, to think that would ever have to be the case.
The future is not bright. -
So basically I am the computer guy in my office. If there is any hardware or software related problem, I am the guy who fix it or try to fix it in my own time.
Little bit of more backstory. Two month ago we got react native project from a client. My boss asked me if I want to do that project. he knew that I don't know react native but I want to learn it. So I said yes. I have worked over 12 hours per day to work on that project while learning react native ( I committed the final version to git today.)
Yesterday there was a meeting in our office about project deadlines and issue with current work and stuff. In that meeting one guy asked (this guy had personal beef with me) in rude way like why I am taking parts of pc and given other people. ( If there is any hardware issue, I use other parts from pc which are not currently in use. So basically a simpe resource allocation.)
I knew it was a targeted questio toward me but before I say anything, All people took his side. (I did all those repair after taking permission from my boss, so he did not take that question seriously.)
I spend lots of time fixing those problem so people work does not stop and this is the thank you I got in return. I did this over one and half year. Right now I am asking my self if I continue the work or not.
Note: I wrote this whole thing to get my anger out of me. Sorry for typos. I am little bit drunk and I am not good with English.2 -
Am I the only one who feels like morning scrum meetings are a complete waste of time? At least in the way that my team does them. It's 30 minutes of "I did this thing yesterday, and I will continue to do that same thing today." All of this information can be sent in an email, but we insist on meeting every morning to say the same exact things.
For the past 3 weeks, the majority of the team has said the same exact things during scrum: "I continued to work on this big feature yesterday. Thank you." Like how does a detailed retelling of what this person did yesterday pertain to the rest of the team? It's just meeting for the sake of meeting, and talking for the sake of talking.
If you have this little technical issue that only pertains to work that this single person is doing, then meet with that person separately and discuss it. There's no reason to make everybody else sit and listen to information that will never be useful to them.
And most of the time, this scrum stems into spontaneous unplanned longer meetings afterwards. So suddenly this "quick" 30 minute scrum turns in 2-hours of meetings and a morning wasted on information that could've easily been discussed over email instead5 -
I'm still learning so take it easy on me, I'm trying to learn typescript and Factory pattern, hope I did it correctly this time :)

NO I DID NOT MEAN __d_dirname!!!!
I MEANT dd_name!!
NOT d_name, but dd_name!!
i swear to god the other times it worked. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG? I SPENT 3 FUCKING HOURS DEBUGGING THIS SHIT!
yes i have included sys/types.h, dirent.h AND sys/stat.h AND I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!!
why did you worked last time? i just wanted to implement a better library than handling all the known and unknown errors myself.
if anyone knows what is wrong, please help me, i am disperate.19 -
I am a fresher at this IT giant and I was hired to work in a better role as a dev. They assigned me CMS copy paste stuff and I dont like the work here at all. I am preparing for better opportunities. The lead calls me up after working hours to do some more copy paste stuff. I conveyed frankly that I cant devote time after working hours as I have other studies to attend do. Did I fuck myself or did i do the right thing ?5

When dogecoin went out, I was a little curious kid. I knew small to nothing about cryptocurrencies, so I started mining some for the lulz on my shitty laptop. Holy fuck no one was using and mining this shit, so I was earning 500-600 DC by night. I did it for a few weeks, let the miner running when I was at highschool.
I stopped after one month since its value was inferior to the used electricity cost.
From time to time, I remember about this story about a 70000+ dogecoins, and I instantly want to chop my balls off and put some super strength bleach on the wounds while slapping myself with spiky plants.
I lost the wallet.1 -
I spent a lot of my time as a little kid playing video games and typing on my old computer. Somehow I found GameMaker (6 or 7, I think) and started pumping out little games with the free version. I didn't like the drag and drop stuff so I learned GML (GameMaker Language).
A few years later someone gave me a PHP book and while I never actually learned anything from it, it did get me interested in learning a real programming language (not GML).
Around this time Minecraft became popular, and with a lot of YouTube videos I got a grasp on Java, and a little C++/C#.
Tinkering around in scripting languages finally lead me to JavaScript which of course introduced me to HTML and CSS.
I loved how quickly a website could me created compared to a compiled program, so I started spending most of my time learning Web Technologies.
And that leads me to where I am today. By this point I've spent over half of my life programing in various languages and formats and I've loved every bit of it! -
QA people hurt my head. "I found this issue" cool write it up. Proceeds to not write it up. "Hey this isn't working" yeah your on the wrong PR. For the 80th time. "Hey I just found out 4 days after deploying this key feature is no longer working" did . . . did you test it? I'm irritated. Probably because all of my tickets got sent to triage because I pushed them to the wrong PR. My life hurts. The burn out is real.

When I was discussing this position with their HR, she mentioned they are filing time sheets, but she didn't mention they do it by typing something like "10:10-12:34" in a text area
Now she is like "oh, you'll get used to it, everyone did"1 -
So, our lab professor in university for data structures was evaluating my friend's group assignment next to me and my colleague.
Professor: So, what does this method do?
Friend: I feel it would be best to explain our structure first and then how our methods work.
P: No, no. It's okay, I'm seeing it here in my laptop. *Looking at their report which included nothing about the structure of the assignment since she asked specifically only to place the methods and their complexity analysis due to not having time to look and evaluate a full report for each group*
F: Okay, *proceeds to explain*.
P: Okay, and why is your code commented?
F: Because it's good practice and we learned in subject x last semester.
P: Impossible! I teach that subject and I did not teach that in my classes.
F: Okay, but our professor did.
P: *Says nothing*.
They got a 3.25/5 as a grade for it and got really pissed off. I mean, they spent a lot of time making the assignment's structure perfect, optimizing their code and the professor did not care for the structure, just the methods, on the data structures subject.
FYI, they are workaholic, dedicate a lot of time improving their skills and their normal grades are usually >= 4.25.2 -
Didn't know what this was, dad caught it this morning in the backyard... Apparently for the first time.
Been watching Pokemon Journeys lately so my first thought was "you caught a new Pokemon" and also "can you name that Pokemon?"
You take a guess here but I did a Google reverse image search and it got it 100%, even with the cage. So I was like wow...
I've used it rarely for other pictures before and my memory says it never came close.
Or maybe that's what all those captchas have been used for.... Though usually they are all for cars, roads and traffic lights....14 -
Week 1 day 3 and 4.
I didn't feel like I did a whole lot yesterday so I just pushed it into today. In the past I tried to program for hours everyday and expect to keep up my stamina for it but it didn't work so this time I'll just take days off every now and then and see if that works at all. Yesterday was one of those, the only thing I did was watch some videos on OOP and practice some more with OOP and recursion.
As far as today goes I started sketching our the ideas for my own personal app I hope to develop once I get the skill set. I tried to focus on looking at it not just from the perspective of a developer but also a user and a marketer to see vialibity and such but I have a LONG time to go before I can get my idea rolling. I decided to push starting the actual course until tomorrow because Ina small questionnaire before you go into it it asks if you're familliar with threading and networking, which I am not. So that was my main focus today, expanding my base Java skill set. If any Android Devs can give from their experience want I need to know I would love that but other than that I feel pretty good about what I did today. -
So my schol has this softwarecenter site from which all software must be installed (if you aren't admin). That's fina and all, i mesn they want to conteoll what we can install, and provide some paid software, BUT WHY THE HELL DID THEY DECIIDE TO USE SITE THAT ONLY WORKS IN IE!? EVERY TIME I OPEN IT I HAVE TO COPY THE LINK FROM CHROME (default browser) AND THEN OPEN IE! IT DOESN'T EVEN SUPPORT EDGE! (Btw all the software found on this site is out of date.)
-
I have spent the last 2 days on the phone trying to get support for certain issues...
- Amazon
- Quickbooks
- CRA
It is universal that all support lines are complete garbage. Shitholes for stupid people to get paycheques.
I have noticed that this task has actually had a negative impact on the emotional state and it upsets me further that I have allowed this.
I am getting a virtual assistant to handle this because frankly, my time is too valuable to be consistently wasted by stupid people delivering no results.
"I am a software engineer and have tried all the normal debugging techniques"
"Did you try restarting it?"
"Yes, that was the first thing I did..."
"Well, would you mind doing it again"
"Yup... It did not work"
"Hmmmmm....."
5 minutes of silence...
"Have you tried the next step that you already read on our support site"
"Yes!"
"Could you try it again for me?"
"FFFFUUUUUCCCCKKKK YYYOOOOOUUUUUU!!!!"
I am literally listening to someone who is reading the god damn support page (and reading it at what seems to be a 3rd-grade level) GREAT!!!! -
Was running personal laptop on 4.10 kernel (running Manjaro).
Was having problems for some reason with an audio program I'm using and so needed to run some older kernel that is real time for better latency.
Installed that kernel and booted with it.
Attempted to remove kernel 4.10, I don't need it anymore.
Rebooted, some kernel modules aren't loading. Xorg not creating a session.
I have no input working.
Not even wifi.
I can't detect USB devices.
Tried to fix it all night.. going through a ton of forums online...
Finally I give up. I didn't have access to anther computer to get a bootable USB image to. FUCK. IM NOT SMART ENOUFG FOR THIS SHIT.
I have 3 USB drive that I carry around all the time. Why don't I have a live image in one of them?
I went to sleep.
Next day I download Lubuntu (just to boot and backup some stuff before downloading and reinstalling Manjaro).
When I was burning the ISO to the USB, turns out I actually had a bootable Ubuntu on it the whole time.
I feel so stupid.
Last week I don't remember why, but I did sudo chmod 770 /
Which also broke my system.
Took me 3 hours to realize that this was the problem and make it work.
I love Linux. It keeps things interesting..3 -
I did a small project in Python a while ago (like 8 months) and today i did it in Elixir, this time I felt a lot more satisfied with the result. Supervisors actually make me feel safe, I fucking love this lang :'-)

Sometimes I think that getting a degree was the biggest mistake I have ever done.
When professor wants to know why you did the work the way you did and you disagree as polite as you can, he calls you Arogant.. Like what the fuck, if you ask me 4 times why I did not expand the assigned task and I 4 times repeat that I want that shit as abstract as I can get. I already have it 5 times bigger as others god damnit, If you want me to focus on details, ask me to bring a tent..
A little bit of time later another professor assigns you a "Social network for schools"... Like wtf? U want facebook clone for free and in 4 weeks... What is this bullshit? You have mistaken uni for freelancer..
Because fuck you sideways... How dare you to have another classes?
Note for self... Next time open up a hotdog stand..1 -
I can't get anything done
I know I want or have to do something, but I always waste my time on something completely unrelated.
Afterwards I feel bad, and when I notice what I should've done and what I actually did I get a bit depressed
I just don't have the self-discipline for this shit, and I have no idea how to get it3 -
At least pretend to have a reason for using checkboxes where the behaviour is obviously a single choice. I know I'm sometimes full of crap. I know I can waste so much time arguing for something I'm wrong about. At least I have arguments to support my approach, and I don't dismiss my mistakes. I don't need you to spend the next 5 minutes changing checkboxes for radio buttons in the mockup, it took dev 5 seconds to replace "checkbox" with "radio" and move on. However, I do need you to know what you're doing, even if it turns to be wrong.
I know this world celebrates people who can do things perfectly: models with perfect bodies, singers with perfect voices, sportsmen with perfect scores, students with perfect grades. I understand that's why you wish to try again so you can do it perfectly.
That's not what the world needs. The world needs people who know why they did what they did. It's drunk drivers who break down in the court, not serial killers. Serial killers know what they did, they know why they did it, and they believe it was the right thing to do; drunk drivers on the other hand had no idea what they did or why they did it, and they try to dismiss their wrongdoings by blaming them on alcohol, not getting a taxi, parking fees, the car, or some other circumstances.
So confront your bullshit for once. Stop searching for excuses to dismiss challenging ideas and prove you can defend your position. Otherwise, don't get angry when your "impeccable" ideas lose to someone who at least tries to defend their nonsense.3 -
A colleague of mine has built a kernel module that is part of our system. He wrote it for Linux 4.4 but in the meantime our servers got updated to 4.15. The kernel API changed from 4.4 to 4.15 so the module does not build anymore. He said he will update it, but in the mean time I figured it would be easiest to just use 4.4 in the meantime. I downloaded the kernel deb package and installed it. Now, after reboot I can't ssh into the machine any more. I just started this project and I'm already tired of it. Every time I fix something a new issue appears. And I did not even start what I am supposed to do1
-
Did it when You l was a kid. Got good through a decade of learning before I even started working as one.
Don't want to waste all those years of learning, probably the only good thing about my childhood...
So yes, it's mostly sunk-cost-fallacy at this time. But it brings food to the table.1 -
Why am I not a queen of blunders. I did one line wrong in the code, my senior has to spent a lot of time on it. I spent like 2 days on it. Turned out to be one of my blunders.
I am so tired. I am done. I will. complete my 4 years in industry soon and this ks what I do.
This is not the first time due to small issues things are delayed.2 -
Google’s SEO glitch over the weekend resulted in both a ruined weekend for my client and I but also a little billable time for me and extra moolah in my bank account. I only wish I had seen this article, but it did help us uncover a nasty hotlinker to block and disavow. Thanks, Google?

Every, single, time, Windows, updates, and reboot...
I do not know what I did wrong with this Mint. It works perfectly until I reboot to Windows. So Windows update itself, I have to reboot and, after finishing all Windows boots, when I come back to Linux it does not work anymore.9 -
I had an interview for a position with an initial part-time duration of 2 months.
It was a team lead role with full-time work only after two months. After some discussion about the role and the compensation, they asked me to get back with my expected salary for the part-time duration (they had a low number in mind from what I could understand as they were comparing it with my previous salary).
So considering what they were going to offer me for the full-time position, the part-time duration (3 hrs/day for two months), and the lead role, I followed up with a higher number (with some reasoning behind it) than they mentioned during the call.
I did not hear back from them after this. -
So doesn't matter that I already did this
Or that nodejs is a large steaming pile of shit
Noone else seems to be stepping up to finish this project so I'm stuck recreating it till the end of time apparently.
I am gonna finish this damn project. Maybe package up a few things I added as well.
There is some kind of mount command in windows right ? Other than creating shortcuts and hardlinks right ? just curious.23 -
During my education there was this "Exception('Smoking hot girl')", and also very kind/sweet I used to help a lot, and tutor best practices on whatever project she would throw herself into.
(It should be noted that half of our teachers where incompetent, or flat out wrong, so we kinda had to use more than usual time helping other people)
But being a shy guy, and having the spine of a worm, I got stuck as a 'personal teacher' for a good period of time. Never had the guts to ask her out.
Not sure if it's selfish to focus your attention on one person because you liked the girl, that's a lot of time I could've used to help others. Or if I should be proud of what I did, I do believe she'd dropped out otherwise....
But nonetheless I did enjoy the time.1 -
Ticket: implement compression algorithm to crypto object x
Details: object to big, we must devise a way to compress it. A deflate algorithm should be added here, yada yada yada we did not have the time Yara yada...
Go see crypto provider's documentation... It has compression options... -_-
You lazy fucking stack overflow copy question dimwits!!! Jesus fucking Christ! This reached production like this shit, I've got clients complaining of the size of the payload because you are a bunch of lazy fucks who can't even read simple documentation!!!
I want to kill someone for wasting my time and patience... Don't call me for this kind of crap... I have better things to do!
I mean, the time it took you to write the ticket should suffice... -
The most hours I worked in a row - more or less, going by the definition of having no time to enjoy any personal activities aside from sleeping - were about ~17h.
I specifically remember this event because of the amount of hours of pointless work that generally went into that project and there was this one time when we - not only me as a technician, but also most of the engineers - had to build hundreds of complex devices in-house to meet an important customer's deadline because we had problems with a subcontractor at that time.
We did it in time, there was pizza afterwards as well as some questionable sense of achievement, so apart from a wasted weekend and sore muscles in my hands for the next days I didn't regret it all that much. So yay, I guess. -
OMFG bless the guy maintaining MikTex for Windows, if only had installed this instead of TexLive the first time around I'd probably be a lot more sane right now (and I would have passed more uni exams).
I genuinely wanna shout my lungs out in frustration... I wasted over a fucking month trying to get my TexLive install to work the way I wanted it to, and now with just a simple automatic installer everything works exactly the way I wish it did, it's so fucking perfect!
Sigh3 -
implementing ticket from epic somebody else did breakdown on
someone from other team mentions that we should be getting approval from their team and preferably avoid doing stuff in this legacy repo
im just a code monkey, i didn't make the decision (or know the nuances around it), nor did i want to be in that old legacy repo
pain
i didnt know, i dont know what i dont know,
how do i do better next time...3 -
This is interesting from a troubleshooting point of view. I have a decent laptop I use to play Fallout 4. It was running just fine until recently. The game will spike GPU activity and crash. I found if I reduced settings and lower resolution it happens less often.
I kept searching and finally found someone saying it could be GPU thermal compound has worn out. So I looked how to change that on a laptop. The video I found it looked fairly easy.
I get into my laptop and I find all the screws for the heatsink/head pipe assembly. However there is a ton of thermal tape used everywhere holding it all down. I think if I am not careful I will break the heat sink. I did pull on the main part and it just didn't want to give.
Feeling a bit defeated as I put everything back together. I had gotten some decent thermal compound for this. So I fire up the game and it runs fine at the low settings. Then I raise all the settings to max with max resolution. This was crashing the game the last few days. It just runs and runs fine on those settings. GPU temps look normal (they did before, but I wanted to see). So, all I can think the act of lifting the heat sink a small amount may have reseated the thermal compound a bit. I am still going to price out a professional doing this, but I can play on max settings again. Maybe messing with screws on GPU and slightly moving the heat sink actually did something.
This confirms to me that something needs done about the thermal compound. The company I bought the laptop from offered custom thermal compound at time of purchase. So I am thinking they can do this for me. It will be cheaper to pay a couple hundred bucks to have a pro do this rather than pay $1800 for a new computer. This is only 2 1/2 years old. It has been a top performer up til now.6 -
I was working on this attendance thing for a very prestigious talk by some amazing doctors(Which I didn't know at the time)
Being an intern I was seated next to the watercooler
So to think up a "creative" name
I used Water Mancooler as an attendant
It was all fun and good....
Little did I know that my boss was going to present it to said Doctors and they see that name as the first person attending
Needless to say I had a fun next day at work 😁 -
Hey ranters who once shared my inability to just announce when I don't understand something, how did you get over it and just embrace pointing out that you're confused at this point in time?
I tend to just brush stuff off and figure I'll have time to properly investigate and figure it out later, which usually works, but it does mean I will keep quiet if something isn't entirely clear.
I think this is bad and I'd to stop doing it. At the same time, it doesn't seem worth interrupting a discussion / explaining to ask what something is when I can look it up now or later and fill in the mental gap. I guess there's a balance to be found. Any tips? Any slaps to the face?8 -
can i have an unbiased review of people working in service based MNC firms like tcs/wipro/cognizant/capgemini/etc ?
- how much did you learnt during your time there?
- i have heard a lot about "bench" : from what i understood, its the free time period in which a person is not allocated to any project. So why is this so bad? can't you simply use your laptop in that time to watch videos and learn new tech?
- How is the growth there? How is it affected, considering these companies are mass recruiters taking thousands of freshers each year?9 -
DevRant Stress Ball Rant.
Today, I was like its time to finally mail and get myself one of them stress balls.
Turns out it requires 300+... arrghhhhh. Damn it. When did this happen? Was it always 300+? I remember seeing 200+ before.. Damn...was I too late or was I mistaken? I guess it's going to increment even more since the community continues to grow.. *sigh* :(
Now I guess I would need a blood sacrifice or something to get anywhere near those numbers..5 -
To the physicists among us:
I'm in the process of planning a very lightweight mini drone that flies with the help of radio signals that's surrounding it.
I'm targeting 100 MHz.
I calculated the amount of energy (Joules) of it and just when I did change the formula from E=h*f to Power=E/time I realized that time is basically going to be infinite and now I am stuck finding a solution to this.
I can't just use a potential infinite amount of time in this equation and need a workaround.
Any help is appreciated.22 -
Fucking windows not releasing my hard drive. I was in a kind of a hurry, but you just have to be a pain in the arse. Now I even have to wait for you to fix an indexing error for something I did not agree to?
FUCKING BULLSHIT, MY DUDE NEXT TO ME USING LINUX WAS USING IT JUST FINE!
I want enough time to replace this garbage.
By the time I got here, it finished scanning for errors. NO. FUCKING. ERRORS. FOUND. FUCKING. WASTE. OF. TIME. -
First chart library:
Perfect, but when you hide it, change tabs, come back and show them they freaking explode. Stupid bug, not ideal, I don't have time for this, move on.
Second chart library:
Cool, cute, but why doesn't it update? Wait, why did this one disappear? Why doesn't it ever appear again? Wtf? It's just like the others...
Do I really have to make my own chart library?1 -
Damn some stupid moves can literally fuck you up.
I just moved to linux distros around 4 to 5 months back. And I have installed and reinstalled it many times. So I thought it's simple and cool af.
So last time when i installed Ubuntu 18.04 i had it installed it on SSD and mounted my home from HDD. I felt super awesome. It worked perfectoo! 😘
And now I had some issues with dual booting so i planned to resort it and make it clean.
So during the installation process there's a part where you gotta select where to installation path and all. Its been a long time since I did a clean installation and TBH i forgot the / and /home . So what i did I put / on my previously maintained home instead of putting it on the SSD.
Now I am FUCKED!
Guys never ever make this mistake. It's baaad. Reaaal bad!2 -
Tried 4 times to move the 'data disk' on home assistant to the ssd restoring my backup.
This last time I let it run for 5 days and it didn't fucking work
Decided to just say fuck it, reinstalled home assistant to the yellow, did NOT restore backup, and the move to data disk took 5 fucking minutes : |
After that I restored my backup which took only another 5 minutes and now everything is just working. really wish the instructions suggested moving the data disk before restoring so I wouldn't have wasted my fucking time.
Like fuck am I the only one who had this issue? -
Just two weeks ago I worked with other students on a university project. I left the room for a short time to buy some hot chocolate (no coffee!) the next day one of my "coworkers" showed me my twitter timeline with the last tweet like "waifu #3dpd" or something like that. And yep, I deleted it. I was about to change my password, then he stopped me and told me he did that directly on my pc in this short time. It was a bit funny...

PO: "Remember guys, protect your scope!"
.. moments later, after the PO meeting..
PO: "I want you to do user story x but I want it changed this way"
me: "Ok"
*pling* notification: PO changed jira story
*I work on it for a few hours*
me: "Is this what you wanted?"
PO: "Yeah, actually I made up my mind. I want you to implement it totally different and scrap what you added now"
me: "Thanks for wasting my time bro"
me: *codes*
.. a few hours later, mid-coding..
PO: "Uh, yeah, changed my mind. The way you did it now is ok, but I want something else added"
*3 iterations of the same crap later*
me: "Sigh, make up your minds!"5 -
People hate on Python a lot. I just used the Python ternary operator for the first time. I found it easier to read than the C++ ternary operator:
0 if i==0 else 2 if i==segmentMax-1 else 1
vs
i==0 ? 0 : i==segmentMax-1 ? 2 : 1
I think Python did a good job in this case.18 -
So I had this Case tools lab during my 5th semester of college and they asked everyone to do a project. Me hoping that they will see the project and appreciate the work, did a good one and I spent day and night on it. Then came the finals. The fucking teacher who was asked to evaluate me didn't even open my project properly and just entered the marks just seeing the home page. It was that fucking day that I hated my college so much. Now I don't spend too much time on projects for my college. Worst Dev experience!

Just sat the shittiest exam of my life yesterday. It involved among other things: TDD with java (on paper), critiquing and rewriting gherkin scenarios, and diagnosing problems with agile teams based on a limited description. I was short for time at the end and chose not to answer some questions because it would tire my hand too much to attempt them, and it's time consuming af to edit stuff you wrote down.
Many other exams are switching to online tests, and this one really could have benefited from that given the sheer volume of crap I had to write down.
I'm basically hoping to God that I didn't fail this thing, but the lowest exam grade I've had so far is 70 so it would be crazy if I did. Still, fuck these people for writing such a difficult exam. -
Lately I am facing this issue. I spend a lot of time and did hard work on some specific thing! but it doesn’t seem to work as it should be, so because of this I am disappointed. I don’t know I should be feeling like this or not, but I am questing myself that I am a good developer or not!
It’s not like that I don’t know stuff, I start working on laravel , few months ago. It’s been 4 months, and I already develop a backend of the whole app, but it was not that complex. Recently , I am assigned to this new project, which is very complex, and It was already made by some other developer, so I am new to this and I don’t know how it actually works. But I was assigned to add new functionality to it, and It was kinda complex, like maths and calculation and depending upon the data coming and updating calculations changed. So, I almost work hard and over time for this, and I think I did a good job, but turns out it didn’t. So, I worked again on this, but again turns out it didn’t work out as it suppose to be.
So , After all of my hard work, the code was not right, and that led me to question myself and I am feeling bad. Is this normal? Is it okay to feel at something?3 -
Fuckkk.. I'm learning total.js now and lost a significant amount of time wondering were did my flags (an array elements) in the route method have gone missing..
Instead of writing like this:
F.route('/admin_page', view_admin_page, ['authorize', '@admin']);
i had it written like this :
F.route('/admin_page', view_admin_page, ['authorize, @admin']); -
And so again I'm here asking for your opinions.
My old router (linksys EA6400) had a meltdown yesterday and decided to lose wifi connectivity every 4-5 seconds for 4-5 seconds each time. So it was like 5 ICMP packets pass and then 5 fail, and this pattern held up through the whole day.
Did a hard reset hoping it will help. Little did I know.. Do you even imagine how fun it was setting it up with randomly not working wifi? :D And this router can only be set up over wifi. I had to count seconds in my head predicting when it will start losing packets. Because when it does - the setup fails :)
yayy!!
So I guess it's time to start looking for a new one. I barely use ethernet ports (one for RPi). But I do need a good wifi. AC is a must. AX is not since none of my devices support it. I'd also like it to have open-source firmware, maybe accessible via shell (100% dd-wrt/open-wrt compatible). A USB port would be a plus (for the RPi).
Do you have any suggestions worth looking at?
What do you think about WRT3200ACM MU-MIMO?
Also I came across something called MESH ROUTERS (wtf is that?). http://linuxgizmos.com/low-cost-802.... Is it worth looking at?
What would YOU suggest?4 -
So apparently my code went to prod more or less all right. Phew, the deadline was this week-end. This project have been sitting there for month, they gave me the technical requirement and never bothered to ask the stakeholders about it. When the contract went in, they started to freak out it wasn't usable.
The thing is, this project had way more moving part and trying to threat video in the frontend is not the easiest. But now is REFACTOR TIME.
I dream of getting rid of the browser video api (too flaky), download the bitmap directly and render it in requestAnimationFrame. I call it just-in-time rendering. I think i'd need to put a decoder in aws, I did it already with ffmpeg. I could not manage to put it in streaming mode though, so it was still a bit slow, but i could decode, write and re-encode faster than the video player speed.
What do you lads think? Doable or not? I at least need to general tidy up (this codebase have grown organically without any fucking direction from above, like this project took all my time on the technical side, I did not have time to run after people to get specs), centralizing state, improve monorepo and tooling, perfs,...
Hopefully they understood i cant keep adding whatever feature they want today. -
I point out to a guy which documentation and which section he should read to solved his problem, 30minutes later I swing by and the dude sits and watches tutorials on YouTube. I ask him "did you figure it out and solved the problem?", he replies " nah! This tutorial is really great, it shows step by step...blah blah.. I can send it to you! We should all watch it tomorrow after standup" ... Really? He honestly believes were getting paid to drink latte watch tutorials on YouTube? I almost imploded at that point, went into "whatever"-mode and seriously pondered how much mentoring sucks some days. But seriously tutorials on the tube were targeted for 14year old beginners a last time I checked, did the world do a double revolution and left me behind?? Or is that guy just plainly trying to hide the fact how incompetent he is at reading docs?

how i learned what are browser user agent string?
i was learning web development and someone mentioned that term, and i was like yeah ok but deep down inside i was like why on earth would you need that?
few days after my father called me to see why his website(organisation's web protal to apply for leave) wasn't working(he thought i did something, beacuse i can code :/ ) and started scolding me that you did this, you are that and boy what a day that was, then after his speech, i learned that website said it worked best on IE 6,7 and that time IE 9 was latest and we were on windows 7 machine and I had no idea about how to get this done, and just like steve jobs said "you can't connect the dots looking forward" I googled how to change user string agent and told him that this browser has bug and you can solve it like this -
For the final week of a group project at university, the project members and I ended up staying in the computer labs pretty much for 5 days. Another project group did the same (to this day we're still good friends). Everyone brought in their PCs from home and we ended up sleeping in the labs overnight. None of us went to classes as it was pretty full on crunch time to get the project done.
When it was time to eat, we each took turns to go on a food run for everyone, like getting McDonalds, or getting everyone coffee or energy drinks. Of course it wasn't all just work. At the time Quake 4 was just released and we had some pretty epic matches at 3am. -
Most satisfying was reducing the time my ci/cd did to build, test, verify complance and deploy of virtually anything i want in lrss then 10 minutes. From code to running appliance fully configured and being absolute certain it will work without any other modificatio . it used to be an hour.
Achieved this to do lots of caching and parallell test runs.
The downside is that my development server is feeling like a unvoluntary black person from ghana moving to the newfound united states 400 years ago... -
Consecutive hours: ~24, it was a hackathon and not terribly interesting.
I did however have an exciting new experience this exam period; a 5 day crunch with strictly timed 6 hour sleep breaks, half-hour lunch breaks and the rest entirely populated by work. I live 5 minutes from the CS lab so this pretty much meant 18 hours of coding per day, 90 hours in total.
Think of this the next time you're trying to decide whether to announce that you aren't going to contribute to a group project. -
Typescript Question
This is something that's been bugging me for a longer time now.
I did couple of React/typescript project (CRA) and it just keeps on happening and I have no idea why and even better - I have no idea how to query google with about problem.
From time to time I open a file that I KNOW was without any errors and suddenly BOOM - Parameter 'XYZ' implicitly has an 'any' type. And now I need to go and add explicit types everywhere it wants me to. TS Server restart doesnt help. Why does this keep happening? Any Typescript guru please?3
