Boss: "it's not the same font"
Me: "yes, it is"
Boss: "don't argue with me. It's a different font"
Me: "ok it's a different font" (it's not)
Boss: "change it please"
15 minutes later and I've done nothing at all to it. Boss comes back.
Boss: "see? I knew it was a different font. This looks perfect now. Why were you lying to me before? I don't like you arguing with me"11 -
There's a spending machine in my job that uses a tablet with an app as the interface. I downloaded Spotify, put some music and switch back to the app. It's funny to see the people trying to find where the music came from.15
-
Boss: Can we add a [Close] button at the top right of the modal instead for all the items, the back at the lower left seems out of place.
Me: What modal? You mean move the back button to the top right of the page?
Boss: And make it say [Close]
Me: But it navigates Back. It's not a modal so it doesn't close. [Back] makes more sense than [Close].
Boss: Ok
...
Boss: Change the [Back] on the modal to [Close].
Me: But... fine...
Buttons all now say "Close", they all have double quotes. No one has said anything.18 -
It's such a lovely day, sun is shining, think I'll sit outside with my laptop and a beer and continue working on personal project.
(...goes outside)
It's too bright, can't see shit, plus working on two screens is easier
(goes back inside) -
Fake or not I think all HR should learn to be straightforward by saying "I'm sorry you're not qualified" rather than telling people "We will get back to you"
600years from that time, it's unlikely they will get back to you.
save us the stress dickheads!8 -
@dfox, feature request: swipe left/right to get to the next/previous rant. Sometimes I feel too lazy to press back button and go to the next rant. Swiping is easy.
(Edit: Not sure if it's been asked before. I'm kinda new here)4 -
Saw this on LinkedIn about architecture but it's also accurate for developers, you only have to read it from back to front.

DevRant is such a small world. I posted a story about someone I know in real life and she posted a rant about me too.
And it's good to be back here.8 -
Guys, I think it's time to fight back!
Whenever a client ask you about IE9 support, tell him to find someone else, because noone the fuck uses IE9 and if someone somehow does, then it's his fault!
Then he will search for other dev, but if we all do so, we can forget about supporting stupid old shit again!2 -
*suddenly wakes up thinking I'm late for work*
*Realises it's a holiday*
*Goes back to sleep again*
PS: Sadly this happens every other day of week :/2 -
Atom please!
Why does it have to be so slow? It's so pretty though. Mesmerizing even and I can never go back to sublime now.
The lag and crashes is killing me slowly, like a hot girlfriend that is somewhat crazy..29 -
Didn't it take us years to stop writing javascript and html embedded? Is it just me or are we going back where we started? It's all a mix now!19
-
Never used Linux before. At least not enough to say I've worked on it. But these discussions in here, they've pushed me. I'll do it now. I'll try Fedora. Right now! And never come back...till it's ABSOLUTELY needed.25

Sure, WhatsApp. It's not like humans have been using the 12-hour format for literal millenniums. Change it to this weird English format with no apparent way to change it back. Thanks.4
-
This morning my girlfriend told me about the network at her school constantly disconnecting, to which I jokingly replied "So, it doesn't deserve candy". She came back with "But it's already asking for so many cookies"...

It's 2018 and folks are still stuck "collaborating" on documents by sharing them back and forth over email.
MS Word Doc created in Office 2016 will not open in Office 365.
THIS IS WHY GOOGLE IS WINNING!10 -
I need your support guys... It's been long time since I last posted, but this is a really awesome community and I was little busy. But now I'm back with a bang.... @dfox20

I often times write code and think to myself "I don't have to comment this, it's obvious what is going on", only to find myself back at the same code, figuring out wtf it does...1

Starting a third year computer science course. Lesson 1 of web API production. Git. Lecturer tells us to do a different branch for every commit so it's easy to roll back.

!rant waiting for my first job interview as a developer at 35years old, so fucking nervous.😱😵 it's like going back to my childhood6
-
Someone "advised" me today to start going to bed early because it improves my health. Well, it's been 3 hours with my eyes still open.
Screw it am going back to code.6 -
Here's a video I found today from a few years back. It's Titled: Ubuntu causes girl to drop out of college
https://youtu.be/WRWrmT0ovPE
perfect 5/7, would drop out again4 -
So this API i'm integrating with wants me to post XML. Yet it's response comes back in JSON!
What the actual fuck?9 -
A few years back, when I register for an account, I can easily find the year of my birth on top of the dropdown list. Now it's going down down down....1
-
What a fucking year it's been.. and it's only the 4th.
Let's see, I've just split up with my girlfriend of more than 4 years (and she's still living with me), my car got whacked by golf ball sized hail stones (and it's not insured), my back verandah at home turns into a swimming pool with heavy rain (and SA is having record high rainfall this season), and I haven't slept since Sunday night.
FML. 🤦 I need a holiday after the holidays..7 -
In image: "Downloading now, if it's good, I give it 2 more stars." And never came back.

Yay, it's Monday!
And as Monday's go, there's a prod deployment, cool beans! 30 min later it's done!
So why the rant?
Because I'm on FUCKING ANNUAL LEAVE YOU BITCHES!!!!!

A while back our whole team was really frustrated with the marketing department.
In retaliation we made a new branch for our project called marketing-bs, which was used for all of marketing feature requests.
It's the little wins that keep us going.1 -
When your specs simply won't run new code no matter what you do, non-conditioned (and unmodified) calls don't get called, and 2+2 somehow equals Q, you know it's time to give up and restart the simulation by going to bed.
Except it's early afternoon and the project deadline is tonight. 😔
Back to debugging reality.11 -
You need to answer your manager, but don't have a clue, try these randomly:
I'll circle back to you
I will run the numbers on it
Let's go back to the drawing board
Let's touch base in a bit. Ping me
I don't have the bandwidth right now
It's on my radar
Let's put this on the back-burner
I have too many balls in the air right now
I have a lot on my plate
I'll get back by close of play tomorrow
I'll have to deep dive/drill down into this and get back
I have a hard stop at X hours
Let's park that for now
It's in the pipeline2 -
My teammate push 2gbs worth of CSV files into our repo.
He also merged all the other branches so, it's kinda hard to revert back without reworking a lot of stuff.3 -
After Monday and Tuesday holidays, it's not a very easy task to move your ass back to office.
Knowing that Friday is also a holiday doesn't help.5 -
YouTube. I used to love it a lot but now I don't recognize it. It pushes its agenda everywhere only certain content becoming popular. And regular people don't have much of a way for getting noticed unless they're in an extremely niche section. It's gone the way of the TV and I don't think it's coming back barring a massive internal restructuring.2
-
When I read the rants here it's like people don't love their work or would rather not make their children be a developer someday.
Where's the Care Bears when you need them.
Come back to semi-darkness. Dev is fun!12 -
Three months into a new job, as a senior developer (12+ years experience) and updated an import application.
With one small update query that didn't account for a possible NULL value for a parameter, so it updated all 65 million records instead of the 15 that belonged to that user.
Took 3 people and 4 days to put all the data back to it's original state.
Went right back to using the old version of the apllication, still running 2 years later. It's spaghetti code from hell with sql jobs and multiple stored procedures creating dynamic SQL, but I'm never touching it again.5 -
So I asked my company's tools team to fix a bug in their tools related to testing a major feature of our project. They downgraded it to "low priority" because it's "user-specific". I asked how can this be user-specific when it's a major feature. They came back with "well, you're the only one testing it"... Right...

Son: I've done good investment in Bitcoins
Dad: What is the rate of interest in Bitcoins?
Son: There is no such thing called rate of interest in Bitcoins. Bitcoins are virtual currency. It's kind of money itself.
Dad: So you gave money and got back money? It's not called as an investment. It's called getting change!5 -
Just came back to an old project I haven't touched in a while and realized I did an awesome job documenting it. It's almost annoying my level of detail. I'm proud of my past self for thinking of me now.3

Back in college I studied web development.
Google came to campus and hosted and event. So a fellow classmate asked me: what's this event about?
Replied: it's Google hosting an event talking about HTML5, we should definitely go & attend.
She stops for a second and replies back: umm why exactly?
- Because we're web development branch and this is related...? -
If you're the alone maintaining them, you learn a lot.... But they increase responsibilities.
I started with 1 open source project 2.5 years back. Today I'm maintaining more than 20 OS projects. And believe me it's really difficult to support them, maintain them5 -
"We don't use a VCS like git, what are you opinions on this?" This is great in my opinion. You get to see some people sheepishly agree and say it's fine and try back it up, or people put valid points why they think it's wrong. You can start to gauge a person's personality after a few of those kinds of questions.4

Dear everyone who doesn't write JS and has some hand-wringing concern about its lack of static typing, lack of threading, or its suitability for large back-end services:
It's fine, we've got this. You go back to discussing contravariance or whatever it is you do.

My laptop's pissing me off.
The screen kept flickering so I took out the frame, and checked the display ribbon cable. It was intact, so I put the frame back on and it was fixed.
But a few days later, it started flickering again. For some reason, taking out the frame and putting it back on fixes the issue. I have no idea why.
I'm glad it works, but it's irritating taking it out and putting it back on all the time.12 -
Have you guys tried the 'recent' rants tab?
It's like going back to the early days of devrant when it was unusual to see a rant over 100++ 😍6 -

Interviewer : Hmm is there any reason why you pick up nodeJS as your back end language
Me : * forming convincing reasons in attempt to impress interviewer *

Interviewer : let me guess, because it's JavaScript
Me : (sheepish smile) yes...3 -
People of Java.... Why do you love Java... It's so confusing and a pain to write.
Second off.... Why do I keep going back thinking I can write Java!!
WHEN I KNOW I HATE JAVA!!!13 -
VSCode you fucking piece of shit!
Just got my code working and rewarded myself with tweaking some of the configurations. Coming back to my file and it's all irrevertably messed up with randomly pasted and probably some deleted code snippets.
How's that even possible? 😡9 -

Implemented complex AD tracking system for offline conversions back to ads.
Me: It's done and works and it's based on cookies.
Tech Manager: What if the cookies get deleted all the tracking is gone.......
Me in my head: Stop trying to be clever with the dotdotot ....
Me in real life: Same as Analytics and Adwords .......all that tracking is gone.

Sitting down all day doesn't do my back much good, so thought I'd look for an electric back massager. And there's plenty around - great! So I do the normal thing I do and take a look at the reviews...
...but the reviews are completely unhelpful, because about 5% are the usual complaining it turned up late, 5% are maybe talking about using it as a back massager, and the remaining 90% seem to be using it as a vibrator. Some are even just bloody ambiguous. I'm still not sure if "takes a bit of work to get it in the right spot, but it's very effective when it's there" is referring to someone with a sore back, or someone who's sexually frustrated. Who knows, maybe both.
First world problems eh.14 -
Legitimately haven't written a single piece of code in months... I feel truly broken!
Haven't even done my usual of prototyping 456 things and then immediately shelving them, maybe it's time to get back in the game1 -

VsCode.
I have been on a journey with editors, all the way back to using edit.exe in Windows 95, to notepad, MS FrontPage, Adobe Dreamweaver, PHPDesigner, vim, nano, then out to Eclipse, Atom, Brackets, notepad++, back to Atom, then VsCode.
And by far, vsCode has given me the most productivity and customisation of them all to not care about what project I open, what language it's written in, or what frameworks are working behind it. I can switch with workspaces and everything is setup to go, yes it's a pain in the ass to setup, but it's a ducking dream to just open and jump in.
Now being able to use VsCode for Salesforce has dropped any requirement for me to keep eclipse around.rant wk206 solves my problems productivity++ multiple everything. multiple languages vscode multiple git hosts1 -

Spending all day sitting in a chair takes its toll on my back. Lumbar and intra-scapular areas are ssssoooooo sore that I can't even stretch them out properly any more (I'm quite a flexible person).
Thanks to my closest shopping centre for this double foam-ball. It's the best investment I've made in years and it only cost me 4€.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good python debugger that allows jumping to statements, etc.?2 -
I've been writing Java the last few days. Really makes me remember why I enjoy writing objective c / swift so much. It's not necessarily the crazy syntax of objective c. It's the conventions behind the languages. It's very easy to make your code read like prose. Which when you become used to this it's very hard to jump back into spaghetti code with abbreviated variable names and such.3

It's Monday and I am back in the office. Going to continue the project from where I left on Friday. Fuck so boring shit.

Emailed my PM a new project spec, the next morning he emails me back saying, to stop wasting time and get back to "real" work.
A few days later we had a Skype meeting with senior management and the PM who rejected the spec to go over that same spec document among other projects, everyone agrees it's a good idea including the PM :D

Worst coding mistake was copying data from a live site to a sandbox site. Data was 1 year old and it's a magazine site.
Accidentally restored year old data to live site. Rolling back all content to a year back.

According to one of my previous rants, it's been 133 days since I got through the first interview stage at Cisco!
I wonder Cisco, when do you plan on calling back about the second stage? -

I can never forgive Apple for the iPhone X. Not because it's a bad phone or that it is overpriced. But because they missed the perfect opportunity to make the back logo the fingerprint scanner.
I mean seriously, just think about the marketing potential. They finally had an excuse to cut that hole in the back of the cover.1 -
I want to properly get into other programming languages like Java and C#, but I keep going back to Python because it's so much more familiar and I'm comfortable with it. :(
What do? Do others have this kind of problem too?15 -

When the meeting organizer gets to the end and says "I'll give you back 20 minutes of your day". 🤬
No sir, plonking a meeting in my calendar doesn't mean you now own an hour of my day. No no no. You are not being a saint giving me back time. The truth is you just took 40 minutes of my time! 40 minutes I can't get back. It's gone. Forever.
Please be respectful of that next time you're planning a pointless meeting5 -
When you come back from work after filling up jira, talking with colleagues during too long stand ups and writing documentation it's time to finally sit down and write some pure code.
-
I've been using Git since 2014. So why do I STILL cringe whenever I have to revert commits or do a hard reset back to HEAD? What's going to disappear? What will remain? Will my entire Git history be vaporized? It's a total game of Russian Roulette to me. So, without the certainty level I want, I just do what feels safer...I grab the versions of the files I think are what I need and stick them back into my repo, then git status and commit the correct changes back in.2
-
Does anyone have lower back pain after coding for a few hours? How did you fix it? What chair do you have? It's it a posture problem?8
-
Friend of mine wants to use his old blu ray player as a surround sound amp. Okay, sure it's supposed to have that functionality.
Struggle, struggle, struggle. Then I see on the back, a powered by Java sticker. Guess it's one of those 3 billion devices4 -
So it's 2018, I thought let's start working with Android Studio on Ubuntu. [Due to some guy who posted his CPU usage on a very heated rant of same issue]
I realized it's fucking mess(/shit) and you dare not keep any browser open in back/fore-ground. Now, my entire system is stuck.
Ruined the first day man. -
Didn't go to work today because of commuting issues.
It's fucking night and I'm receiving notification of boss sending me photo on messenger. back to back.
I haven't opened the app yet and I'm legit scared if it has anything to do with me not coming to work.
Or even worse nudez.
:/ -
When your old boss writes you excited about their UI update and asks for feedback and it's so horrid and half written you can't muster a nice thing to say back...1

First time I've been out all spring or is it summer 😬 been coding my life away
It's nice outside!
Back to work4 -
New task with a march deadline, our 1 developer (me) will work on multiple projects, while also learning about AR (I'm a WebDev) and creating a commercial ready AR app....
I think it's time to get back to looking for a new job... -
It's not a new year unless you spend your first day back firefighting shit that broke over the holidays 🙃
-
Ever tried explaining GitHub to someone? I swear it's like trying to teach a dog to ride a bike. You can try, but it's probably not going to end well.
Okay, rant over. Back to coding... and dealing with merge conflicts... and pull requests... and GitHub issues... sigh.4 -
Boss comes, asks that I make a function in the site. Tell him it's impossible / forbidden, he says okay and goes back. Comes back a week later, asks for the exact same function he asked earlier.

One morning I accidentally pulled the charger out of my phone. It's not turned, just pulled out. I tried to plug it back, but the first attempt failed. I turned around the cable and plugged in. WTF USB?! How is this working?1

Revisiting Python again and so far it's very enjoyable. It brings back memories on how excited I was when I started to grasp certain concepts within programming. Feel like it's really easy to actually accomplish things in that language. It also makes me realize I have learnt a lot on my journey because I felt that I understand what I'm doing.

Had to reinstall Linux on my gaming PC today. I tried Korora (Fedora based) but failed at installing the NVIDIA drivers.
So, back to Antergos I go. It's so much easier running [sudo pacman -S nvidia] than having to blacklist nouveau... -
Trying to sleep. Looking at devRant. See a f ew rants about bugs which reminds me of my bug. Get out of bed and now behind my computer trying to fix the bug. Hope it's a quick one so I can go back to sleep
-
I stop and write some useless but fun classes/methods which takes my mind off the problem enough that I'm excited to get back to whatever I was working on. It's almost therapeutic reinventing a small part of the wheel in an empty project.
-
Vim + Tmux = Heaven. I love it.
I'm also getting better at the hotkeys (and there are A LOT of them) so it's a really nice experience when you can do things faster than using a IDE. I only missed the auto complete, so it's very very hard sometimes (DB connection for example).
I may look crazy for going back on time using it but it's so good i can't stop.2 -
My current job is too easy.
I know that's a weird rant, but after years of crisis deadlines and constant struggling pressure it's really relaxing to be able to build at a sane and professional pace.
...but I'm afraid it's ruining me. I don't know if I could go back to literally any of the other types of companies I've worked for. I'm going soft8 -
I totally want to refactor my project's code, but I don't have any time for it and now it's a working piece of spaghetti-ish 😭
I'm just praying I'll get to do it once it's actually finished, so I don't have to work with it again in like a year and want to travel back in time and murder myself.13 -
Maybe "non-replaceable" batteries in phones isn't a big deal after all. By the time the battery has degraded, the glass back cover is broken for certain. It's no big deal replacing both at the same time.12
-
In case you guys want to know, Apple fixed a big problem with the whole virtual back to the last app button. Now it's way smaller and it doesn't actually hide your internet connection info. Small fix, but one truly appreciated

Clench your butt tight hole and prepare:
Microsoft, Google, Amazon are the early owns, others going to follow. It's going to be painful year (Build back better).

This is just the start.....16 -
What the fuck is up with all these fucking shit-posts lately. devRant used to be fucking sick as and now it's just meme after meme and random shit everywhere. No true rants most of the time.
P.S. I'm back. Welcome to me.5 -
Working full time and going back to college......
I got my full time gig in January. This semester I decided to go back for my bachelor's because I only got my associates degree. Honestly balancing the homework and work isnt that bad. It's trying to get ANYTHING ELSE done....like getting and oil change, going to the dentist, etc. I have to use paid time off for all of it now. :(2 -
After a 3 weeks break from work and programming, the hardest thing is going back on track. It's day 4 that I have started 'working' and I barely finished any tasks. I keep thinking of the great time I spent on 3 weeks holiday. ;'(1

Ok it's not the "worst" technology I've ever used, but it's undoubtedly one of the most maddening…
Auto Layout!
Powerful? Certainly. Intuitive? Not a chance.
There's nothing "auto" about it. Like shit, give me back my HTML and CSS over this over-architected shitstorm. 😠 -
Did you guys know that the computers in the back of the Delta airlines' seats run Linux? Lol just tell them it's not working right and they'll reboot it for you 😋3
-
Looking back at myself, I thought the refresh button made computer faster by cleaning up ram.
It's just fucking repaints the desktop. -
For a back-end, Java engineer, It's really sad when you are so bored at work that you get excited at the thought of designing SQL views/procs to make prod support easier.
-
I feel like I need to change company... it's Monday, I'm 1 hour late to work and already wanting to go back home.
Any Portuguese company looking for a iOS dev? 😅😅2 -
The button radius for the Android Pie pill and back button really pisses me off.
I can't tell you how many times my fat ass finger has accidentally pressed home trying to go back in an app.
Having said that, it's still a looot better than the old soft buttons.2 -
Getting back to the cpp applet I started somewhat recently (Vanilla + Gentoo kernel version checker)...
Me: "debugging c plus plus code"
Dictation: "f***ing c++ code"
...
Well, it's not too far off. -
It's my first time learning back end and I feel like I'm leaving half of my intelligence back before I boot my laptop to try get somewhere1

Not the first I used a computer, but I remember playing this game called Dave. Oh god, brings back memories. My parents used to tell me it's virus. 😂2
-
People have good coding style right up until they use a new language, then it's like they're back at uni. Having to explain basic things like good names or what should be a member variable, don't add comments like "sets variable x"2
-
the daily/weekly/monthly/yearly meeting where everybody absolutely agree on absolutely fucking everything and everybody shows only positive things.
After that, you go back to work and it's the opposite.3 -
Please don't try to decipher your code from 5 years ago, it's a mistake. Thought it would be a great idea to bring an old project back to life. Turns out it is not. Not when I can't understand my own code...3
-
When the project manager gives you work then sods off to a meeting. You review the work and only been given half the info you need and impossible to complete. They then come back from the meeting and kick off it's not done!!!

Been developing a FAAS backend for a mobile app while going back and forth to work in the train, constantly loosing wifi and failing deployments, it's like waterboarding for geeks4
-
That feeling when you switch from your feature branch to master and it's like going back 50 years in time. All the nice, cool things are missing!
-
PM: "I have an easy question for you."
me: "Well let me decide if it's easy."
PM: "Where do the images for X in project Y come from?"
me: "Good question. No idea. I will come back to you."1 -
Thanks GitHub, it's not like I didn't have shit I had to do today.
Guess I'll just sit back and wait for the heat dome to kill me.5 -
You know it's time to search for new job when you constantly feel like taking out wallet and mobile from bag and leave office and never return back

Guys am i the only one removing my pants by jumping backward into the bed and rolling back until I'm leg up, catching my ankle and pulling?
It's the most efficient way I found4 -
Man, it's hard getting a job in a field you have little to no experience in.. in my case: front-end.
I hate back-end..9 -
Whenever you change your Instagram username it becomes unavailable completely even tho it's not taken. Not possible to get it back after changing.
Not sure if this a bug or a feature that they intended to have in their app...8 -
Fuck JavaScript!
Seriously, it's always like this:
> "Hey, look <module name> seem cool, let's try it!"
> Find a tutorial
> Tutorial is 3 to 6 months old
> Should be good
> Everything is deprecated
> Come on...
> Back to C I guess.
It's moving waayyyy to fast.
It's frustrating...19 -
I've realised that I should probably get another desk at home if I want my productivity back. It's small, rickety AF and my wife keeps putting crap on it. Any other tips for keeping productivity up @ home?7
-
Well, apples terrible keyboard is back after a short hiatus. It worked almost flawlessly for ONE update, but it's now back to its terrible illogical awful nonsense.2
-
Okay, I have to ask you guys this question, given that most ranters here are experienced devs.
I keep hearing this sentiment that "Oh, back in the day it was super easy to land a job. You just show up to an interview, and you have a pulse, and you were hired".
I call bullshit on this sentiment. It's not like people weren't facing rejections back in the day.
What's your take on this sentiment?8 -
Switched back to windows again, and Holy crap development is so much faster! It certainly has to do with the fact that I'm using WSL2, but but I'm so excited for next year, when it's officially out.
Instead of waiting 5 seconds for nodemon to restart my application, it's almost instantaneous now8 -
When you think you suck something it's NOT your fault - learn how it's done in a different language or framework, then come back to it.
When you think you mastered something, it IS your fault - learn how it's done in a different language or framework, then come back to it. -
I always print out a hard copy of whatever code I'm working on, then go through the code and annotate it with a pen until I feel that I have some insight... it's usually either that or I'll just walk away and come back later2

Android Tutorial #3: Welcome back! Today we're gonna learn how to use the List View.
Me: Wow, this is gonna be so useful for me! What a great tutorial!
The next day
Android Tutorial #4: Welcome back! Hey, remember List View from yesterday? Yeah, it's deprecated. Today we're gonna learn how to use the Recycler View.
I feel so betrayed 😵8 -
I'm sure everybody here knows that when you lend a usb to somebody, your coworker or friend... THEY NEVER GIVE IT BACK. And you can't ask it back outta nowhere because it will make you seem like a cheapskate. You can't also ask them in a casual conversation too because you are not that close (if it's coworker or a friend you don't talk much to anymore). And even if you ask them they still won't give it back because they usually have the memory of a goldfish. So you go buy a new usb.. knowing that it will also disappear.4
-
I've mostly taken a back seat these days. So many rants come in, it's a little bit more fun to just lurk now.1
-
UPDATE ON E REPO: it's back up? I don't know what happened but I couldnt find it 2 days ago and now is back. So yea. It's archived but I have a form of it if anyone wants to check it out.
-
!rant how many of you work as web developers (front, back, fullstack, devops, alien, ... ) without a CS degree ? And if it's the case, do you suffer from it at work ?6
-
Am I the only one who hates the current status of Windows 10 where it's slow as fuck on an HDD? And I honestly don't like it's design... Even today I started messing with a Windows 7 PC and loved the OS theme and design again (though the icons may need a change). Well, back to my Elementary OS I go...1
-
I can't find a remote development job and here's Microsoft built a AI that can code. Well fuck you Microsoft, fix your fucken browsers. oh wait...Your AI again suck.
I think it's best I go back to the farm.1 -
Have you ever hit Ballmers Peak, only to fly past it but still keep coding? Sometimes it's an adventure looking at the code the next day. Three steps forward, one step back I say!2
-
It's been barely a day since I got windows back and I'm furious about all these malware. Should have stuck with fedora8

The moment when the company you applied to as Junior Java Developer emails back asking for a date for a phone interview and it's been 3 days passed the day you picked with them and still no call.. 🤔😥3

Why, god why... Why does my track pad stop working everytime I boot back from Windows into linux.. It usually takes just a couple reboots within Linux and it's back up and going... but now it's stuck... ugh..

Manager wants to sign me up for sponsored Apigee training and certification and i wasn't sure if it's good or bad (even now)
Me: ohh, nice
Manager: let me know asap. I'll get back to you.
*Manager comes back after 2 mins*
Manager: have you decided?
Me: uhm, yeah i haven't finished looking. I'll get back to you in 30mins
*Manager comes back after an hour*
Me: does this have a bond?
Manager: no
Me: okay, I'll get back to you tom
Poll question: is it a go or no go?1 -
So I've been on vacation for a week now, still two days to go until I get back to work.
It's been super fun, but I am getting pretty stressed about the shit-ton of work I have to do when I come back.
How do you let go?2 -
OMG it's suprising when you write down a code that run in the first time without an error :O I love Rust so much and I will never go back to C++ :D1
-
Fucking client takes a week to get back to me, and when they do and I jump into their staging environment to test, it's like WTF? How could you fuck up those instructions I gave you?
-
This whole thing about privacy and google is getting a little paranoid, it's almost like the Y2K bug back then...
-
This rant goes way back.
> Be a student with student placement program at a big non IT related company back in the college days
> Given the job to work on a system to digitize their paperwork
> Had to go through 1.5 workdays of bureaucracy (?) to install Notepad++ and other basic open source tools to work with
IT'S JUST NOTEPAD++ NOT THE FKN MATRIX! JUST APPROVE THE DAMN THING!1 -
Damn it's hard to alter code, on a big (side)project, that is pretty shitty... And it too big to start over.. :/
I'm just gonna run with it and rewrite the damn app piece by piece as I am writing new features..
It's by the way a project I kinda quit half a year ago or so. Now it's coming back., but better. :)1 -

Getting a chair with a straight back and lumbar cushion makes it sooo comfortable to sit, it's amazing.
I just got a DXRacer chair and my back feels it's hugged and supported from every side possible. And doesn't hurt anymore.
Do yourself a favor and get one.1 -
to present an TPS ASP.NET site with target features/objectives for our finals in prog subj
working time: 1 night
and i tell you right now, it's the most shittiest site (front end && back end) i have ever done, and i'm never going back. 1/4 only of our class actually accomplished the target features. -
Coworker was on cppcon (hope it's the name) and apparently Visual Studio debugger is gonna have "step back" ability !
Holy proper shit, I'd love to be among the engineers behind this, awesome1 -
Not using my period of unemployment to really delve into freelancing. It's much harder to do on the side. But I lacked knowledge and experience back then.
Also not interviewing companies better. Always ask about everything. -
Let me just warn people that if you quit your job but they offer you to come back with a significant salary increase it's probably not the right answer.5
-
Was always wondering how different programmers perceive their IDEs: for front-enders it's simple lightweight cool-looking notepad when majority of back-enders uses heavy tank-looking shit like intellij or eclipse with guns, rifles and much more shit6

sooo, new job. more complex stuff to do. i thought. turns out some project have memory probs. guess what, it's sharepoint! *sigh*... very hard to find the code in trouble.
learn sharepoint and it WILL come back to haunt you!2 -
Hi guys, I'm hoping you can help. I've looked everywhere and I've not got a clue what it is.
I lost my back door key (5-pin pin and tumbler lock) the other day, and I can't afford to get a new one right now.
I tried picking it earlier, and I discovered it's got a spring at the back of the plug (which I've never come across). I lined up all the pins but for some reason it's not opening, and I have a feeling it's either got an anti-pick pin or it's to do with that spring.
Has anyone with lock experience got a clue what could be doing this? I'm at a loss.5 -
It's funny when a girl says where's the "any" key to start a game it's found cute and when a guy does the same and it's like here should crawl back into his mother's womb and rethink his life decisions.4

People that call you, get to voicemail and, instead of leaving you a message (especially if it's something important), just hang up.
Why is it so hard for people to just leave a message saying “Hi, I'm ${PERSON} and I'm calling you because of ${REASON}, to let you know that ${WHATEVER}. Please call back”?
I don't know if it's like that in your respective countries, but here in Spain people seem to have a phobia of leaving voicemails and it's fucking annoying.3 -
Anyone else trying to crawl back out the rabbit hole that is 3d printing? It's great don't get me wrong but it's so fucking annoying when it goes wrong16

Project before lunch: Green and good to go.🏞🏞
Project during lunch: Holy fuck the world is collapsing what the fuck are these exceptions! Get back and fix this! 🌋🌋
Five minutes after lunch: It's fixed... Files were being named incorrectly.🏞🏞 -

I don't know if I'd quite say it's MY specialty yet but the company I work for specializes in automation. I'm technically a support/DevOps person atm but they've got me heading more more back into dev work (which is good)

You stupid tester first add you freaking requirements and not just put back stories on todo and say it's not finished. You are just testing how an web app works. We can also automate that process you know!!!!

there was a third part of a rant linking previous part, so i tapped it, and second part linked the first one, so i tapped it. read and tapped the system back button. read the second part and tapped system back button again. or maybe (probably) twice by accident, which took me back to rant list.

Junior frontend here, I really fucked up with SCSS nesting. It's a nightmare to go back and maintain or extend the UI. I really should go back and sort this shit out. Some parts of the hierarchy even contains pointers which I phased out long ago, but somehow it still works.
Let this be a lesson. -_-5 -
Jira on Android 🙄
I had an overview of the backlog, blocked, active issues, could see who works on what and so on ...
Accidentally pressed the back button, returned to the project. Now it's a single big list with only issue type, description and deadline. It's pretty much a guessing game, which feature is open. Their seems to be no way to change that, not even deleting any data.
How did this happen?? Let me change it back!6 -
When you're on the way to a client with two colleagues and take the back seat... so you awkwardly stare out the window for an hour because it's too noisy to speak to the guys up front.

the back-end now has spend 9 months to be able to upload phonebooks .... and it still doesn't work :'D
How... It's not even a complex feature. Just parsing a simple xslx file. I don't know how incompetent a senior developer can be.9 -
We were learning how to code circles to light up in sequence. As it's similar to how code works for Arduino. Cool. Go back to c# in Unity and teach what the code does not just copy.

I was away sick for a week. Come back to a chat log with messages about how the other dev team is trying to figure out a solution to a bug that they only show three services listed in the system.
Me couple of weeks ago on my second day in the project figured it out relating to a task I was doing. It's not a bug, it's a feature. It's a constant defined in the constants-file.
And the best thing: my team mate quoted me and said "Lankku figured it out last week". And it was passed down back to the team who had actually developed the whole feature and couldn't figure out why it was working so now. xD -

Hello guys, I've posted a question here: https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/...
It's a question regarding taking ownership of a project with a apache 2 license. I've pretty much created the back-end part of this back end as a service. Some other colleagues created the Java, ios and js clients, so it's not entirely made by me.
More details in the question itself. -
