People who send an email saying "I'm getting an error message".
WHERE DID YOU GET IT?!
WHAT IS THE FUCKING ERROR MESSAGE?!
OH NO SURE LET ME LOOK IN MY CRYSTAL BALL, I'LL HAVE IT FIGURED OUT FOR YOU IN NO FUCKING TIME.

My GF just selected all files on her harddrive and clicked "Open".
The look at her face when she figured out what she have done.
BONUS: She restarts her computer, and upon start she selects Yes to the "Your computer shutdown unexpected, would you like to re-open the applications" popup 😂12 -
The new iPhone 7 comes out on August. If you want to have a sneak peek at the new iPhone. Take a look at the your current iPhone and pretend it costs 200 dollars more.15

Person: I want to learn to code neural networks and cool AI stuff.
Me: Look into Python or Lua.
Person: Those are too hard, I'm going to use HTML instead.
I got out of there as fast as I could. 😅11 -
When you look back on your github activity and just think "Wow, we have really created something special. This is really going to help the world." It just... It gets me. That's why I do this day in and day out.14

I thought i'd see what the avatars look like with different color eyes.
I personally like red. It really brings out the undying hatred I have for my peers.8 -

Dear fellow devs, I would like to remind you to get up and drink a glass of water once in a while.
At least drink enough so that your pee is clear. Just trying to look out for you guys.13 -
I'm moving to a new place soon meaning that I'll have to get a new desk/chair. (current ones suck)
I need a good one of both but I'm not rich so was looking for more cheap options.
The guy next to me is moving out soon as well appearantly and he came to me and another roommate like "hey I'm going to buy everything new, fresh start! If you guys would like to have anything, let me know!"
Me: also a desk/chair by any chance?
Guy: yup, take a look :)
*takes a look*
Me: the damn they look very good! Are you sure you want to get rid of them? I'd think they cost quite some money.
Guy: yeah, you can also have the couch table/clothing closet if you'd like! (all designer/quality stuffs)

Yesterday: "This fucking logic makes no sense. I can't work this shit out!"
Today (first look at the problem): "Oh... I think if I do this and this... Yeap, that'd work"
I love fresh brain thoughts in the morning.8 -
Me: *Working on my game*
Partner: What are you working on?
Me: Just starting out some basic AI
Partner: Why are you writing 'if' and 'switch' so much? Is that what AI can be?
Me: Look away! Don't break the illusion!
I then sat back in my chair and realised AI isn't really that intelligent...7 -

I really f*cking hate it when someone tells me they use PC and they look weirded out at me when I ask what operating system they use and say 'well I use PC so windows obviously' and then I'm like ' PC STANDS FOR PERSONAL COMPUTER NOT FOR F*CKING WINDOWS', man, can't stand those people15

When did “responsive“ web design become synonymous with “huge f*cking images, big ass captions and needing to scroll vertically forever“?!
Although sites like that may look good on tiny mobile screens, on desktop screens they are just freaking me out. I am not blind, nor am I too stupid a visitor to handle denser paragraphs of text in a more sophisticated kind of layout! Geez...8 -
Co-worker: I need a proxy to do this task.
Me: Why do you need a proxy?
Co-worker: So all these reviews for the company I'm posting don't look sketchy.
Me: Download the TOR browser.
Co-worker: That's kinda sketchy I don't wanna do that.
So falsifying information about the company is okay, but using a browser to do it anonymously is right out.1 -
You developed a completly free and open source app that was designed to do A, and it does exactly what it should.
Review from an user (2 stars out of 5):
"I tried it and it just does A, I would prefer it did B.
Thank you, but I will look for a better option. Keep working, you have a lot of potential."

It's not that I hate PHP, I just hate the lack of consistency in standard function naming and parameter order, nonsensical attribute access, nearly-meaningless comparison operators, reference handling, case (in)sensitivities, and more!
I mean, look at these functions:
strtoupper(...)
bin2hex(...)
strtolower(...)
And look at THESE FUNCTIONS:
array_search($needle, $haystack)
strpos($haystack, $needle)
array_filter($array, $callable)
array_map($callback, $array)
array_walk($array, $callable)
And let me jUST USE SOME ATTRIBUTES:
$object->attr = "No dollar sign...";
Class::$attr = "GOD WHY";
HOW ABOUT SOME COMPARISONS:
(NULL == 0) // true
(NULL < -1) // ALSO true
Functions AREN'T CASE SENSITIVE (at least variables are).
Wanna dereference? TOO BAD, YOU'LL HAVE TO GET OUT THE TNT.
Alright, yeah, I hate PHP.19 -
So I dropped out from University after 5 years because I was fed up with it, took a look at the job market, found something interesting, applied for it and got it. Now I'm here on my first day, sitting on the toilet, scrolling through DevRant.
Life is good.12 -
We’re recruiting new team members, and so our recruiting staff wanted some input on what to look for. We told them that we need more frontend devs, mainly for JS frameworks like React and Aurelia.
And now a few weeks later we find out that our newly recruited Java developer is starting this monday. Thanks3 -

Working hard on a project. Suddenly, my system freezes except for my terminals. I curse, as I really don't want to reboot. I spend 10 minutes that I don't have investigating processes, and then look at my mouse.
It's wireless, and had simply run out of juice. -
It's a perfect chronological sequence from left to right:
"I'll fix this bug in a jiffy"
"Fml i can't figure out whats wrong"
"I give up on life"
and then finally "Oh look, missing semicolon"

Jokes aside, this got me thinking html is most used and most successful hacking tool out there.
99.99% of the time it's far easier to socially engineer and phish for existing credentials that scan networks, sniff ports and look for vulnerable versions of software, new vulnerabilities etc.
We (people) are ad always will be a zero day exploit.7 -
We got a prequalification letter from the bank finally, so: Surprise vacation!
Leaving tomorrow morning to look at houses! 😊 Yaaay! Maybe we can move out of this misery at last!
Working on the road tomorrow, Monday is a holiday, and I’m taking Tuesday off.

just overhearing someone in my office,
he found a bug with someone's code who sits beside him,
I have now listened to him tell everyone in the team, blatantly pointing out the simple mistake he made, (parameter order)

Most painful dev learning experience?
Learned that no matter hard you work, no matter how big the dragon you slain/slew, there are individuals out there waiting to tear you down. Not immediately, certainly not in front of you, and capable of going to extremes just to make themselves feel/look better.7 -
Teach people how to google properly.
May sound a bit sarcastic but I think an important part is how to look for errors on your own rather than going to the professor/TA. I’ve seen people paste in whole error logs or more often “code throws error, what do?”
At least teach in classes what to look out for like what error type in java and understanding how to look at stackoverflow questions to apply their solution to your issue.
Moral of the story: teach people how to use existing knowledge rather than just depend on someone to help their exact issue.6 -
My personal android app project started at android 1.5 and actually went to google play when android 4.2 was launched... With the look and feel of android 1.5...
Prior to that I spent about 2 years trying to make an Adobe Air app out of it.
I feel proud of my perseverance. -
I hate it how our profession became common over the last decade. We're nothing more than factory workers of todays day and age. Just take a look at petty midldle management above you all... and all underpayed and overworked devs out there... Nah, this ain't that glamorous proffesion I dreamed about as a kid.13

Do you ever step out of your happy dev bubble and look at the news or read the paper or just talk to another human and wonder what the actual f*ck humankind is doing right now?12

So I'm in the middle of the website migration that was made in Wordpress.
Just made a database dump and decided to take a look at it cause it looked really big for a site that only needs internal management. Found out they use contact form plugin which stores binary of attachments directly in database..
And people ask me why I hate Wordpress and so called Wordpress devs..5 -
I just hate this shady Apple behavior 😡
They make it look like I’m out of storage, but I still have 20%+ free7 -
Business User: Hey can we get a sample output you plan to send us?
Me: yes heres a mock
BU: This doesn't look right, can you use real values?
Me (said nicely): WELL IF WHEN YOU WROTE THE FCKIN REQUIREMENTS WEREN'T SO VAGUE AND ACTUALLY PROVIDED REAL VALUES FOR THE INPUTS WE WOULD GET AND WHAT WE SHOULD OUTPUT USING THEM MAYBE I COULD GIVE YOU A BETTER SAMPLE... AND DO LESS GUESSING ABOUT WHAT THE FUCK YOU ACTUALLY WANT...
BU: Oh I forwarded some data
Me: *looks at input data*
(thoughts) THIS FUCKING MAKES NO SENSE!! NOWHERE DOES ANYTHING LOOK LIKE WHAT YOU WANTED.... HOW ABOUT I PULL MAGIC VALUES OUT OF MY ASS?6 -

Co-worker - "We need to have this added just like this, you should be able to do that right, it looks easy"
Me - "HA we'd have to redesign the whole architecture to make that work, and you still can't even figure out how to take a screenshot after I've showed you 20 times, so maybe don't tell me how easy something does or doesn't look"3 -
Just found out you can take Screenshots of a webpage right from the firefox console... neat! You can even select specific elements to screenshot.
Just throw :screenshot into the console - Ff v62 (--selector [css-selector], --fullpage, and some other params you can look up)
Have a good Monday :)3 -
Look to your left, then look to your right...
All of those devs started out exactly as you are doing now!7 -
Just found out why my computer didn't sound like a jet engine anymore: Both of the video card's fans were dead, and it turns out they're kinda useful for not overheating during a game.
On a completely unrelated note, websites look really shitty at 480p.8 -
Ever met another programmer, and after finding out they use Linux, proceeded to correctly guess which distro they use just by the way they look and talk? :D16

Reminder to look after yourselves.
Today I found out I've had hypertension and possibly an unruptured aneurysm. Resulting from stress at work and home, overworking and bad diet from having to keep my engery up for work. (over the last around 2-3 years).
Luckly I've moved away from stressful situations now so I'm feeling like I've dodged a rather large bullet!
Look after yourselves guys, take breaks, check your caffeine, sugar and cholesterol intakes and keep active! I reckon the 6 days a week football training saved my life!
hypertension is a silent killer and can cause fatal damage to your organs such as kidneys, lungs, eyes, brain and heart.
Luckly it spotted it early with a blood test and optician visit. I had a hemorrhage in one of my eyes but wasn't until 6 months later GP noticed signs of kidney damage from my blood test it was found!
I should be fine but look after yourselves! You're more important than that deadline!7 -

This kind of random stuff happens to me often:
*comes home from going out*
*wants to sleep badly*
Brain: heyyy, why don't we take a look at some vps discounts!!!
Me: please, I want to FUCKING sleep.
Brain: oh come on...
Me: pls don't do this to me..
Brain: But vps discounts...
Me: oh FUCK YOU, I'll go look up some stuff.
My brain can be weird and annoying.8 -
Hey fam, first post in devrant!
Possible client comes up to me and asks me what my mockup for his app looks like. I show it to him on running on my Android device.
Him: where are all the images and descriptions/info?
Me: you didn't give me any. I just made what it could look like if we had images and descriptions.
Him: well talk to some people in the departments and put it in.
Me: but that's not my job. You wanted me to make what it could look like if we actually went through with this project.
Him: okay. How hard would it be to make it for Apple?
Noooooooooo... I'm out.8 -
so java thinks any jdk different from what the jre is targeting is "out-of-date", you should learn this in "how to not look like an idiot 101" programming class in elementary school. oracle.2

No rant, just appreciation
A thank you to the senior developers out there who take the time to help us juniors out, to look at our (potentially) shitty code and point out how to improve it.
To help us to see the bigger picture and maybe take a more lengthy approach to a problem that'll pay off in the end.
And lastly, thanks for allowing us to learn from your years of bug splatting, stack tracing, null pointers and error messages.
You guys rock5 -
I worked with a sales guy once who would randomly come into my office and look out the window. Our entire office was Windows. There was a rumor that he was checking to see if his car was repossessed yet. As he had been caught selling knives over the phone in his lunch break half a dozen times.
When he came into my office he did not say a word or make eye contact. Just walk in. Look out the window. And walk out. Man that guy was weird.3 -
I know last year suddenly lots of animated login popped out.
NPM actually uses one... and it doesn’t look that good14 -
Best: being able to look back at the year, from the first site I built to the latest, and seeing major progress. Realising that I can actually make a career out of this.1

so I had a very important video conference for some rather large cloud infrastructure that Im engineering. I decide to look "smart" so i decided to wear a jersey during the video call. I aced the meeting, happy people all round. I walk to my room and my wife says "you do know your jersey is inside out...and back to front..and the label is sticking out from under your chin....How did the meeting go?" me:"..fine until you pointed out a look like a 2 year old dressed me !" ... well thats one way to kill the happy feels!3
-
Hiring for my startup right now and this guy decided he's better than what we can provide.
Guy has maybe 6 or 7 years of college, "walked away from" a doctorate, whatever that means, and what looks like 2.5 years at a previous startup, 1 month as a freelancer on web development. But look out! He's beyond startups now.
Blocked me too... 😂15 -
When you open another persons function to see if there’s an obvious way to get better performance out the the query on to close it and walk away for some coffee and wish you never looked.
If I look at this monster any longer I’m going to be forcing myself not to rewrite it from scratch.1 -
When you look at a layout and consider the hour it will take to refactor and clean stuff out to remove built functionality.
Nah fuck it - display: none !important;1 -
For the Linux users/fans out here, take a look at Pinebook (just Google it). If I get enough money for this I'll buy it straight away.13

09:54 I'll get out of bed soon
09:55 let's round it to 10
10:00 ok let's wait till 0 turns into 1
10:01 hmm that number doesn't look convincing to get out of bed
10:03 ok let's round it at 05 and then get up
10:05 that's not even a good number let's round to 10
10:10 actually i like 30 more this is the last one
10:30 honestly we're halfway there so let's round to 11 and then get out for real this time
10:47 fell asleep
12:18 woke up3 -
Not sure if this has been posted before but GitHub has an official dark mode now!

Just redid a small work script in Golang to test it out.
Honestly, speed matters little for what it is, the original was in Python.
By heavens Golang is one ugly ass looking language.
I like using it tho, its easy to understand and performant for networking, file io and shit like that.
But man....shit is ugly to look at from a distance.
I do think that most langs look ugly af tho, so shit is allright.
Syntactic whitespace is still shit btw.12 -
Read source code and unit tests. Don’t bother documentation cause it’s outdated. Dig into the core, look where data goes in and where it gets out. Everything else is just a wrapper.6

I gave up on learning math as a young person because no one was ever interested in teaching it in a way that made sense to me.
But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started working on a pet projects that require understanding of (what I would consider) fairly advanced geometry, which as it turns out is called computational geometry. And it’s fun.
I just look back at the time I was afraid of this stuff with regret. All because my teachers weren’t terribly interested in teaching, but more interested in fulfilling useless metrics that only make it look like students are learning when they’re actually not.12 -
That satisfaction when you're teaching Python and git to a friend, and not only she actually understands things right away, but she tells you: "It's ok if you don't know this, I'll try to look it up and figure it out by myself".
Every now and then, the world doesn't seem such a dark and gloomy place :)5 -
Just updated devRant and out of curiosity scrolled down to look at the recommended apps - wtf
I'm not depressed and I know English already?
Btw update looks nice 😉3 -
Said jokingly to my dev lead yesterday: "or you could just use that VPN we have lying around lol"
The look on his face while saying: "v..pn?"
Like it was same mambo jambo from outer space written in Russian... Lol, this dude is so out of touch with tech :/4 -
Look here sir. If I have raised 12 defects on the feature you were working on its not a personal attack... I am not trying to publicly humilate you or doubting your ninja coding skills. We are on the same team. Just trying to make a better product that's my job as qa. So chill out with passive aggressive comments on the tickets.
You don't hear me making a peep when you take my name and say I missed the issue if someone higher up points out the same defects.1 -
spotted a huge bug 2 days before launch. My boss was panicking and he asked. "how long more you need?!" I look at him and almost said "Don't rush art" then I swallow my saliva and said "give me 2 hours" he said ok hurry up.
yea 2 hours after i find out what went wrong2 -

How I confused an Indian co-worker.
I noticed that his office desk was using a multi-outlet power strip connected to another one, and then one more after that, because the cable length was too short.
Me: pointing out that this is not allowed in our company.
Him: dafuq-look.
Me: yeah, electrical safety, we need to replace this. Gonna ask IT whether they have something (they did), replaced it.
Him: different dafuq-look.
Me: I guess that's the most German thing you've run into, right?
Him: uh, yes, but I can see the point. :)9 -
Got a text message from a former coworker who was spared the layoffs from $last_job.
"Go look at the status board, they left it up after the layoffs".
The 99% uptime is now down to 80% and you can practically pick out the exact week when the company laid off half the engineering team.
But hey, they redesigned the homepage and got a new logo.1 -
Finally, I've installed everything I need in Fedora 24. It is now stable and has all the tools I need for development.
Oh, look. Elementary OS loki is out

Men in plaid: Look like programmers.
Me in plaid: Look like farmer.
I hate fashion. I hate picking out clothing. Where is my easy uniform-thats-not-actually-a-uniform? The men folk don't have to spend brain cells devoted to clothing, if they don't want, and still look sufficiently appropriate. Whereas I'm sitting here on a Friday night, wondering what precautions need to be made before washing a professional shirt which is for some reason bedecked with rhinestones.17 -
I swear my ISP has already done away with net neutrality. My connection is always going out whenever I need to look something up for work.3

Some fegit: "test you"
*fegit sends outbound Facebook link to some Paki website*
(why not a direct link you moron?)
Fegit: "go."
Me (thinking): *what the fuck does this idiot want from me*
Me: "What makes you think that we want to prove ourselves to you by us doing your dirty work? We are not your personal army, so please fuck right off."
Fegit: "look out ya window"
Ehm yeah sure.. as if there's anything there. You'll need more than that to threaten me.
Me: "Anything to see there?"
Fegit: …
Fucking piece of shit. Look out your window you say. Wanna give it a try? To someone who masters the art of wrangling the angry pixies? I don't need a gun to kill people, you know ^^
Oh well. At least it wasn't a "plz huk Phasebuk" question I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
That moment when you decide to look why Vim's regex rules are a bit inconsistent and find out this program has a setting called "very magic".
Today is a good day.4 -
Do you guys think that in terms of a design, we're in a refresh loop?
Like, I don't think the goal of a design is to be user friendly and optimal for all human eyes. There's a million ways sideways to achieve that.
I think the real thing most designers go for is to just make something look "new". And every few years that needs to be redone. Forever. In an infinite loop.
Fuck actual usability, thought-out layouts, contrast rules, what-the-fuck ever. 99% of the goal is to make it look "modern"10 -
I was playing kitchen with my niece today and we were baking a cake. After she put it in the toy oven, without thinking, I spat out:
"How long do you think it will build for?"
I've never seen such a confused look 😂 -
!dev
Just took out my four wisdom teeth at once. I can't feel my face, I look like a balloon and I'm drooling like I'm about to eat a delicious cake.
Except the cake is a fucking lie, my mandibular joints are hurting and I can't eat solids for a week.
At least I only have one postoperative to contend with. Hurray! 🙃6 -
Bluntly telling management that they're wrong, full of shit, and need to quit doing stupid things instead of just smiling and nodding and taking the paycheck. SPOILER ALERT: After 20 years in industry, they're NEVER going to change. They're just going to keep doing stupid shit. The best you can do is smile and politely point out that it's a problem. Then, look out for your own concerns and make sure you don't have to suffer with their bullshit decision as best as you can.
-
If HR wants us (engineering) to fill out a form, you need to make it short and sweet.
The longer you make it (multiple pages, a lot of text, etc) the less people are going to fill it out / even look at it.2 -
I was working on a game, and my monitor randomly blacked out and my computer stopped dead. My lights were still on so it wasn't a power cut. I look at my computer and I noticed it's completely covered in Diet Coke. So, I take it apart and cleaned them inside out, whilst I waited for any drying. I stole my dad's desktop and just put the hard drive in. Continued coding. So I guess the moral of the story, don't spill Coke on your PC.2

Google is so racist. It thinks all Chinese look the same so it didn't bother to blur out their faces. :/9

that feeling when you start looking at code after dinner, correct a bug or two, start implementing new features, tweak the code a little bit, you are really focus in your coding... then look out the window and realize the sun is about to come up. it's great 🤓

Looked into my spam/junk folder and found this. I don't have a C-Panel account, just so you know. I took a look into the link to check it out. It's quite obviously an attempt at phishing. (more screenshots in the comments)8

Just had my year 1 review.
They love what I've done so far, exceeded every expectation. But the salary will be looked at 6 months from now. It's already awful enough at work.
About time to look for something new in case they take the piss out of me in 6 months.4 -
What I can figure out:
You give me a large application with multiple projects/classes/files/functions that is tens of thousands of lines long, I can debug it. I can picture the multi-dimensional data structures, objects that contain lists of other objects, all in my I head.
What I can't figure out:
Should I or should I not look at the person sitting at their desk when I walk back to my desk from the bathroom.4 -
For some reason the backend kept throwing errors when I tried to save a long string containing markdown. Initially I assumed I must be escaping things incorrectly but that all looked fine. Asked the backend guy to take a look.
Turned out that in order to count the number of words they were using a regex, which seems fine, unless you construct the regex out of my string and run that over the word count regex... 🤔 -
So I just found out about arrow functions thanks to React and I've been sitting here for legit 20 min, amazed by how aesthetic they look6

Hi (name)
Your resume recently came across my desk and I wanted to reach out and let you know about a couple positions I'm working on. I've looked over your resume and you look like you'd be a great fit.3 -
so wait... the recruitment agency just gave me the wrong FUCKING ADDRESS.
THAT JUST FUCKING HAPPENED.
Get your head out your arse, and take a fucking proper look at the appointment details, instead of checking your goddamn phone constantly.
Fucking hell, I'm angry. -
One thing I learned early on was...
"If the bug is not where you are looking...look somewhere else."
I just spent 2 hours looking at 50 lines of code pulling my hair out why it wasn't working. Guess what...those lines were correct. The bug was somewhere else.4 -
That awkward moment when u look svn history to find out which idiot wrote this stupid code and u leant it was you yourself. You feel so glad you didn't go all gun blazing criticising the guy to your colleagues before ur investigation.

Fuck YouTube and their sponsored content!
You can clearly see they get paid to promote certain videos as they pop out of nowhere, regardless of your interests, and no matter how many time you click "I don't like this" or "don't recommend channel".
It can be simple stuff like Warthunder vids (which I don't play and never searched for),
Or complex like the Amber Heard trial - vids that make her look foolish. Feels like Depp dropped some serious cash on YouTube to make him look like a victim! (regardless if he really is or not)
Isn't there a law that sponsored content must be marked as such?13 -
Random rant: You should always look for a new job, even after landing a good(seemingly) one. It keeps you on edge and synchronized with the market.
Employers also should not shun people who are looking for new job, if they somehow find out. A developer who looks for a job, gets offer but decide to stay is better than who lost his/her/xir fire.3 -
Tried to make my qr code look fancy, and it didn't turn out well. My guess is the main part of the qr code must be darker than the complementary part?

As I went through old open PRs, to sort them out and resolve them, I started to feel you do when you look at your childhood photos or in case of YouTubers at their old videos.
That is to say, I'm dying of shame.
*Well at least I'm cleaning them up now so~*3 -
Hi. I'm new here and liking it.
My rant today: Lofty business guy tells my small dev team that he knows exactly how everything should look and work because he knows exactly what users want out of the webapp experience.... goes on to tell us to make an editable, side-scrolling table that is also mobile-friendly, for users to manually input a ton of data.... -
I've heard a lot of nice things about python so today I decided to check it out and HOLY CRAP this is an amazing language! Really makes me wonder why I didn't look into this sooner!
Seriously though! I looked at the documentation and official tutorials for like 30 minutes before writing a selection sort algorithm using only six lines of code. I'm quite mind blown.8 -
I was working on this ER model today and making everything look polished and alligned and then I proceed to generate the PNG out of it, but it turns out blurry and disgusting and eww and why the hell can't I change the dpi or ppi even? 96 dpi is not enough ...4

So my dad calls me because my uncle is freaking out about how a client messaged him and he doesn't know how to check if he can do what them asked him to. I tour them around the website he's using (as he understands little to none of it, and my dad doesn't use the site regularly so he's not versed into it as well) as to where they're supposed to look and they go check this one tab. In it, there's info of what is sold out in what day. And for each day it says "day x - y sold out" and he asks me what day it is that y things are sold out, and that it is confusing, and I'm like "are you serious it's right there". Goddamn it this guy sometimes

Hate asking these questions here buuuuuut...
Can anyone recommend a good flowchat/diagram visualiser for linux?
Preferably GTK based so it doesn't look out of place but anything will do, using google docs for this shit is like trying to disarm a bomb with a spoon...14 -
Starting dev job with .NET (various stack levels I think) in a couple months, beginning with a paid intro course. Any tips for stuff I should look out for, awesome training tools etc? Background: java, some js, some Python.4

This is by far the most creative way so look for a job. It happens, when you install core-js. It prints out a job-search at the console.3

Anyone else out there feel useless as a programmer? By that I mean you have always struggled to solve problems quickly and effectively. Or to fully understand the language and typical patterns and algorithms. Or to retain in memory all the things you need to “just know” on a daily basis to avoid having to look them up regularly and look foolish or incompetent? It seems I can’t keep my mind focused on learning, whether by tutorials or hands-on practice. I should probably just switch careers, but I’m so close to retirement that it seems stupid to attempt such a thing. Am I alone?12

I remember when I was fresh out of college and I had a shitty client that wouldn't shut up on how my design didn't look exactly like the 50 page PDF they sent over. So what did I do? I took each page of the PDF, made it a JPEG, and made each page in the site an image. THERES YOUR PIXEL PERFECT DESIGN!2

My brothers friend messages me on discord asking for help making their chatgpt generated code look more human

I miss the simple times when you could have a runny nose and still go out for a run..or at least walk outside and nobody gave you a second look.. :(8

I was developing an Android app during college training. I made the app in three days, actually, three nights.
Three consecutive nights of only coding had its toll on me. I got burned out.
I couldn't even look at my laptop. Every code I looked made me want to throw up. That's how much burned out I was.
Well, after three more days, the feelings of throwing up receded, and I was back on track.
This was my second worst burned out experience. -
some guy asked me to look at his react project,
I'm yet to find out the problem with his routing but look at this dependency list.
for a simple frontend project, I really dont know how many lazy developers are being introduced into the javascript ecosystem,
might seem normal to others but it feels wrong to me, as a beginner developer who isnt even dealing with a deadline
or......... maybe they are just plain clueless that they dont realize this level of redundancy9 -
I can't eat lunch in our office anymore.

Can anyone recommend some android alternatives?
I'm not looking to move away from android permanently but I'm just curious, I enjoyed my time with UBports (fuck QT) and seeing projects like the PinePhone and Librem 3 just get me curious what is actually out there.
Currently rocking a pixel 2 XL but not shy on buying new hardware to test stuff out as long as it's within reason.
Currently had a look at PureOS (not available) and Sailfish, any others to give a whirl?6 -
Oh man. When I look for a job after I'm done with school, I need to watch out for those "pay-per-line" bullshit contracts. More lines? Everyone can do that, but it will cause inefficiency just for the money. I could make a fucking Python Hello World program have 100 needed lines if I wanted to, but why would I? More lines = more typing ≠ more work.3

Today it is the day of:
"Ok just a few more changes and this thing is good to go. Let me just look at this for a bit to make sure the changes work and...."
And now I'm looking at some APIs spitting out garbage and somehow everything is working and I'm questioning if I know anything at all now :O1 -
Everybody keeps complaining about people who center content (expecially in websites) not appropriately.
So I'm just watching the WWDC 2018 (never watched one before and don't own any iDevice) and see the new aproach on Apple News.
So, "centering is ugly" is out and instead "gorgeous".
Have to admit, that this does indeed look nice. Just funny when centering content often embodies bad design choices.2 -
How i love US companies and their tendency to just lazily send out a programming quiz as a part of the interview.
Look i swear i can make a fucking java bean, i just suck at coming up with algorithms okay?1 -
Just a quick one:
Testing team: hey your webservice isn't returning the id number of this customer we used it to look up, fix it
I take a look and sure enough the test customer doesn't have an id number *screenshot of blank field*
I add an id number to the customer and test it out again. Lo and behlod, there's the id number! *screenshot* *send reply*
Seriously wtf this is basic1 -
I’m stressing out man. I can look at let’s just say a sorting algorithm for now. I can look at that insertion sort and I can understand what’s happening, but if you were to tell me I was supposed to be able to write that just based off a description I couldn’t. I need to be able to design and understand algorithms but I don’t know where or how to start. There was some course I was gonna try and see what that does. I put aside JS completely to focus on C# but I’m just stressing out over here. I learned the basics of C# although I feel like I’m learning it wrong but I’m moving on to SQLite and it’s my first Database experience and it’s confusing me and I also don’t know how I’m going to be able to use it for my future applications yet I’m just expecting too much out of me idk I love programming but sometimes it’s a cruel mistress13

Me: taking 1 week off Oct 1. I need a break from production issues and all these critical tasks...
CW: ah OK yea, you deserve it. So where you going?
Me: well I'm planning to just stay home unless the weather is really nice. I'm going to try React Native to build a mobile app and maybe look for some open source projects... O yes gotta look into my investments too...

Recent rant about hipster styled mobile-first websites which actually look awful on a desktop PC reminded me of this. How is this a good UX if I have to zoom out your page every single time? C'mon, I am not blind ffs!

What i thought to be a cool company, turned out to be a shitshow.
Our "Team Lead" when assigning tasks keeps saying things like "it's only..." or "It's just..." or "You only need to change one line [there]..." And that's in regard to a terrible product with a pile of tech debt. So when you actually start to develop/fix things, you end up redoing third of the whole application.
How do you deal with this? How do you tell the "leader" that he should look into what we have in a code before making us all look bad for doing "just this one line change"?2 -
I fear that in the future there will only be 2 possibilities as software developer
either work for pennies out of passion while others profit off your work as more and more open source developers do
or work in a dipshit heavy environment with soul-less automatons who look only to maximize a column or another in a spreadsheet until they are ready to retire and die6 -
I'm new in the programming world; when I need to learn something new I generally look at documentation and articles to get an understanding of the basics.
Then, if it's still interesting to me, I just try it out.
Sometimes I might ask a fellow more experienced programmer or a teacher to explain it to me.1 -
Depends on the project.
If it is a full application I usually start with what information it will handle.
Then either sketch out some database or some pages depending on how much info I got and if I got any good examples.
The less info I have, the more I try to focus on use cases and workflow to try to figure out what data will be needed.
But for more niche projects, like supportive library, ex parsers, I either mock some test in linqpad or look for similar examples online to flesh out the idea.
But I tend to very quickly fill out the basic shape and try to get something that can be tested.
Then I can find if I need to rethink it. -
Trying to work out an encoding bug after upload, I ask them to send me the original version of the file that is currently uploaded. I look at the files and they seem strangely similar, but strangely different.
I reply to them, "To confirm, this is the version you uploaded?"
"Nope." -
DevRant is starting to look more like a shitty fucking combination of Pinterest/Instagram to me.
Everybody's taking memes/pics out of other sites and upload it here, as if we devs don't follow meme sites ourselves.
It adds scrolling length for no reason, but if you say something about it, incels jump in be like "wHy iS tHeRe aN oPtIoN tO uPlOaD tHeN".3 -
Using the new project as an excuse to try out the language I was an absolute newbie at. (Python, at the time).
A couple years later when I’m much more proficient and I go back and look at that code, I want to slap past me for putting that spaghetti mess into production. -
Every fucking time I get an application for simple stuff like cleaning or weight measuring, and it asks me for completely unnecessary things like making an account and requesting access to my gps location, I look up the company and find out it's Chinese. What the fuck man.1

I think the advantage of CS is that it forces you to explore things you might not think interest you, it also gives a general base and vocabulary to speak "the language" of this career. With that said I often look to hire people without CS degrees but that has the motivation to learn by themselves (I'm self-taught). The degree doesn't say much about, but if during it you explore, stay curious, look beyond 20y/o outdated advice from some professors you'd get the most out of it.
Start making a portfolio even before starting college and stay curious! -
So I'm pretty new to PHP after coming off 5 years worth of Java. So far I've used nothing but standard, out-of-the-box code. Leaving the office before everyone else and having to walk out in front of them has to be one of the embarrassing in the office.

Folks at my organisation say they can't recode our product based on a newer technology as they aren't comfortable with it and yes, it would apparently take much time and effort.
I think you should look out for better and newer technology out there that might improve your product and not worry about the effort it takes to migrate.

Disconnect from everything that you're thinking of for a moment. Step away from your computer, and dump all of your thoughts out for about five minutes.
In better terms: clear your cache. Your devices need it, and you need it too. Bonus points if you give your eyes a stretch and look outside your window.2 -

The more I look back on it, the more I really see that this job has really thrown me to the wolves time and time again, only to laugh as I come back beaten and bruised.
They’ve given me objectives that were deceptively broad, no guidance, and then misguidance when I came back with a well researched opinion. They wanted me to estimate large projects without having worked on a large project. Plus, college leaves out the huge part of software work: deployment. I had to figure all that out on my own too.
The more I look back on it the more I see this place has been a complete shit show from the beginning. It was just the first job I didn’t have to do manual labor at so I valued it highly.
It’s time to move on to somewhere I’m not the constant scapegoat. -

Thinking abut changing game engines entirely form GameMaker (Instability and lack of communication), mentioned in a previous rant I was going to look into Godot and Unity but starting to think it might just be worth building my own engines from the ground up in either C# or C++ (after i learn more of it)...
Just want to know if any other dev's out there have done this and what experience they had with it, or if there are any legible documents out there regarding it?10 -
Whats people's opinion using other design languages on other operating systems.
For example, using the UWP design language on the Xbox android app.
I absolutely hate it... Makes the app look terrible and out of place in my opinion, even worse when they use there square style icon and just put it in a circle for it to 'match' the pixel launcher, for example, LinkedIn -,- -
If the documentation does not make any sense, I always try to look up some articles or tutorials. But I found out that especially on the Medium platform, so many people copied word to word from the official documentations, I was like what is wrong with this mf's.2

First version of the devRant-Webhooks Front-End is up!
You can access it here: https://devrant-webhooks.clan.rip/
Would be nice if some of you could test it out, look for security leaks and generally give feedback!
Next Part is the actual core of devRant-Webhooks, which listens to events and executes the webhooks.
Greetings!14 -
Can anyone explain why the Assign Issue and Resolve Issue dialogs in JIRA are modal, so that I can't look at the issue I am assigning/resolving while writing my comment and filling out all the other mandatory fields?
And if you close and reopen the dialog, all your changes are lost. Second tab it is...1 -
Got my first real job programming recently doing Java, this a good language to ride out and gain experience in or should I look to switch to a job that uses a newer and popular stack? I'm really just concerned about job security.7

Just started a blog. It doesn't look pretty and I just grabbed the first fully free platform I could - I don't care how it looks. I intend to post on it every time I learn something interesting or have something I think is decent to say.
Check it out if you want

So I'm looking at different fonts because I enjoy getting new fonts to try out that look nice... and I'm taken to this site: http://velvetyne.fr/
And while their fonts are nice, their layout is most certainly a disaster. Holy crap, I feel so claustrophobic going to that site...1 -
An undefined ArrayList coupled with NullPointerExceptions because of it really know how to raise your blood pressure up.
Spent almost 1 hour trying to figure out why and all I needed to do was look a couple lines above.
But I guess that's what 4am development is all about -
I have been on LinkedIn since 2008. I really don't know why I still look at the site everyday. I only get contacted by recruiters that are doing the throw out a big net thing. I keep up with a few past co-workers but I can do that on slack now. I almost close may account then change my mind.2

The problem: The only way of having our users move a wpf control was to disable it. This caused the control to gray out.
The solution: Creating a .BMP of the control that would be placed on top of the control so that it didn't look disabled in order to not confuse the user.
My reaction to hearing this: vomit. -
At university: Error 404
But as I say: you can learn from everything, from good how to do the things, from bad how to not do the things.
One example: don't copy code directly from a PowerPoint presentation, it will change the " to other symbol and make you look like a fool when the compiler throws errors and you don't figure it out why -
That moment when you start to hang out with a new girl, and she tries to look more intelligent & interesting and asks you:
Girl: Hey you, you know more of software, which of these devices should I buy? -
I’m in the middle of a 2:30h SCRUM meeting and the only thing I have to say is that Bill Cosby drinks would be less soporific.
Honestly, why managers can’t just hand out the tasks instead of forcing us to look at them discussing them?2 -
I decided to start learning Rust, mainly to work with REST API's, any recommendations? Or do I look out for another language?14

Going back to WhatsApp seems inevitable as most of my contacts won't switch to other viable options like one such as Signal. But with the look of things it seems Signal isn't ready to grow or scale massively just yet due to the funds that may go down the drain without any income strategy. I really see reasons from what this community user pointed out...10

Tried to look of an operating systems cookbook that had a kernel's recipe.
Turns out the answer was 11 herbs and spices. -
What should I do if I can't get a Leetcode answer?
Should I just keep hammering along and stress myself out until I get the answer, or look at the answer and try to learn from that?
I'm trying to find a new job and am pretty shit at algorithms.5 -
so I found out that i'm too stupid to understand floats... I look at the structure and my brain immediately smooths over. I just can't understand it for some reason. Even better: this shitbox calculator requires them for LITERALLY EVERYTHING. I can't even have it take a register and turn it into a float or anything, so I can't even operate on anything without massive assembly routines, and I just don't understand what the fuck any of it does or means.
i'm really not cut out for a programming job am i5 -
Thinks about a great tool all day, comes up with ideas and features, figures out how to make it all work, sits down, 'accidentally' selects the YouTube icon. Look! An entertaining video! Another one! So Many! Wait, what was I doing?

Any 'A Perfect Circle' fans out there? Was wondering if you could recommend some similar acts?
Got this tune stuck in my head resonating deeply:
"Time to put the silicon obsession down
Take a look around
Find a way in the silence
Lie supine away with your back to the ground
Dis- and re-connect to the resonance now
You were never an island"2 -
Well gawrsh! Just look at all those "full-stack developers" out there without professional experience . . . ah-hyuck!2

I just spent like 4 hours trying to figure out how to make a simple httprequest to the google directions api in android... nothing worked :( running it in a seperate thread, tweaking the address...
I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing... but I'm feeling broken and defeated right now...
They make it look so easy on the android5 -
Fucking shit, i just spent 20 minutes debuggin why saving a model was not working, turns out i was only fetching specific models to being with.
(SQL Management studo kept crashing and was not bothered to look into it, so i was not checking the database either) -
PM: We need to add "Under Contract" banners dynamically to listings on xyz.com
Me: No problem
[ ... a few minutes later ... ]
Me: xyz.com has been updated. Check out the listings and let me know if anything is out of place.
PM: The updates you made look great! How does this scale (in the most basic sense of the word; i.e. in the viewport) on abc.com.
Me: ? òįÓ ? ... that's a completely different site ... why would it affect it if you didn't ask for it. -
So I'm testing a co-workers code and doing regression scenarios when suddenly it "loses" data in two fields after I save the data and go out/come back into the form. That's weird says I, lets have a look....
And I find the following conditional::
if (field empty) then failValidation("hey stoopid user")
else blank field value
Say what???
Happy Friyay everyone.... -
Every time I look up a tutorial, a guide, some sort of documentation on something that's new to me, and all I can find is written with the implication that you already have a level of understanding on this thing. It's new to me, I don't have that. Instantly questioning whether or not I'm cut out for this.2

Wow man, them shoulders look broad asf, started working out?
Nah, just started carrying my laptop to work.. -
So today I needed produce some files with an unknown file name, not specified by business. I said in the standup that I still don't know what it is supposed to be. BA says they will find out. Speak to them all day discussing it. The architect says its in the documentation. BA and I don't find it. Turns out it isn't. I ask a sister team what they did in a similar situation, they said they named it something arbitrary and moved on. I was like sweet, GG story. Later I'm discussing work with my tech lead. Email pops up look at that and read. Look back at tech leads screen. What do I see, file names. At this point I'm frustrated because all I see is file names that look similar. My senior then speaks and says 'Yeah we've seen them for X days now' I'm like really? He says yeah and I hope we don't get anymore people like you. At this point my colleague dev bursts out laughing and I feel humiliated. Only to realise they are the names of other files. Try to explain myself but my senior is already looking at his PC doing sweet fa.
I'm now raging a bit inside and want to leave but can't because I'm tied into a horrible contract.
So Today I realised I'm might be being bullied by my senior dev.1 -
When you're working in visual studio and trying to look through the suggested uses of an object and fucking shit keeps popping up all over the screen to tell what type things are and shit and you're just like "get the fuck out of the way I can't see shit you useless cunt fuck."
Visual studio buddy. You're killing me.2 -
An internal application is distributed as "bunch files without extensions". To figure out what types of files they are I need to hexdump each one, look for the identifiers, and then add the extensions…
Who distributes anything without extensions and why? Also how is a non-programmer expected to figure this out? (tool's audience is mainly EPMs)3 -
When you have 5 hours on a task, struggle for the first hour procrastinating , second hour trying to look into the problem ,then convincing yourself you cannot work until this mess of a file is sorted out, spends another hour restructuring the whole file , adding comments and moving related logic together.
Great 2 hours to do a 5 hour job -
Getting ready to start sending out applications for junior dev positions.
What would you suggest should I look into/repeat/prepare for possible interview questions? For example, typical algorithms they might ask me to code?
I already have a list but maybe you have even more ideas to add :)4 -
I’d look myself but there are endless fonts out there. Can anyone give me a suggestion for my editors? I like the harsh terminal look but I also don’t enjoy hurting my eyeballs1

I just look up resources, bits and pieces, and make something out of it. Usually some text adventure.

Ok! My new project still haven't started and I'm so bored , running out things to look into!!!
So far I have looked into
Firebase
Ethical Hacking
Some web developing concept...
Any suggestions??? Related to web developing, laravel , vuejs ???1 -
So this has happened before, but I think I’m gonna deliver late on this project. I really don’t want to look bad within the first six months of a new job. Someone lie to me and say it’ll all work out. 😭😭4

Is privacy really that big a deal some of the more tin-foil hats make it out to be? Look at Estonia, their government knows every last detail about an individual citizens life. Result: they are basically in a golden age as everything is efficient as there is zero red tape. This is what technology can achieve if we don’t bog ourselves down with non-issues1

Yesterday it was my first day at work ever. Basically I have no tasks yet, all I can do for now is look at other's code and figure out the basic of how their framework works. Is it usually like that?1

when you can clearly see an object property you want to access and check against in web browser debugger but you're too stupid to figure out how to get typescript let you access it in code

Why Redmine has a such bad and convoluted UX? I don't care about its look which comes straight out of the 90s but it shouldn't be made in such a way which each thing you do requires 1000 clicks.4

I got to create the data platform with Azure Data Factory. I am new to data platform.
Any advise on what to look out for?
Could you guy please tell me if you know any good use case I can look at or any obvious pitfall which drain all the credit and so on?
I just a vague idea of what Azure data factory can do.4 -
anybody likes/loves nestjs? I don't know why but every time I look at the folder structures, it creeps the hell out of me. And the learning curve, Ughh! I don't even know how people are this patient while learning new things.
btw, any advise for me regarding nestjs?5 -
Anyone know of algorithms i cam check out to generate a scene with rooms ect. I think the random walk algo is one example but are there more i should consider having a look into?

Okay, so I need a Twitter client library for my Python app. Surely there's a decent one out there, right?
> Goes to Twitter's developer site
There are links to nine different Github repos.
> Takes a look at the one with the most stars
Every method of the API class is @property decorated and returns the result of a function that creates an entirely new class, and then returns a new function that creates an instance of the new class and calls one of its methods that happens to actually make the damn API call.
Alright then...
> Takes a look at the one with the second most stars
All method names are PascalCased.
Please help😭 -
For the first year or so, for me at least, I found that loads of my classes didn’t teach much other than rote learning. Loads of this does that, here’s an example code to look at. I bet most of us would’ve learned quicker if we got to play with the code and figure stuff out yourself.

@#!@!&#! Hangouts! Need to attend Jangouts meeting. Installed app on cellphone as desktop doesn't have a mic. Figured out way how to open correct meeting in the Hangouts app (opening it on desktop and then it shows in mobile app), made sure whenever I spoke green bars were going up. Found out that I shouldn't mite myself as unmuting doesn't work. Ok, it's fragile, let's not touch it. Figured all this half an hour before the conference. And when others join, found out that they can't understand me as sound capturing is somehow screwed up and it's doing just noise!
I really need to look into jangouts and convince others to switch conferencing system. -
@shellbug thanks for mentioning Radium. I took a look at it and I'm going to try it out starting now...ish

Coworker heads out for lunch and says "I'm bringing my apple with me".
I looked at him and said "But you have a PC..."
He gave me the best look as he started to walk way.
"Next time I'll bring my Dell just for you... " He said as he left. -
Since I'm not getting a lot of help on SO, might as well post it here. If anyone has experience with FFMPEG RTMP streaming and feels like helping a brother out, please do take a look :)

My internship assigment was about building http client for specific software. In the end of my internship I find out that there are plenty of these type clients I was developing. Always look out of the box no matter what your supervisor is saying :)

Dev job? I always thought finding out the most ideal way on how to structure an ui for i.e. Blind or disabled people to tell devs how it must look like and how random people would expect ui functions to be placed is a thing which could help.

Have a look at the attched image first and spot something fishy.
**(Spoilers)**
To make sure the user does not read the terms and conditions, I found two dirty tactics used by companies.(Specially on this one)
1. Use of **complex** legal words, to make it incomprehensible to the reader/user.
2. This one is special- They repeated the same words without changing para multiple times, to make it look like a big set of terms and conditions. Yes in the 11th line after [Jurisdiction]. The para is repeated, again multiple times.
Instead of focusing on spending thousands of dollars on making websites look more presentable, if the company really wants to stand out, they shall improve the way their terms and conditions page looks like. Atleast they can ditch the para system, use some less technically jarring words, and be concise and don't repeat the same things again. -
Any time there is a meeting it is the worst.
Suddenly, there's a voice in my head that constantly says, "shut the fuck up!"
I want to let that voice out but that'd just be poor "soft skills."
Oh well.
When I sit down at look at code again the voice will go away.. Or will it?1 -
Just got hired for an internship duing QA testing for an insurance companies software team. I've been told their systems run mostly Java, SQL, php, JavaScript, and a little bit of Cobol. Any advice, tips, or things to look out for?1

I really would love to buy a microsoft surface pro, went to the store yesterday to try it out ... and I leaved without buying. I hope windows will some day get some nice scaling on high dpi displays like mac OS but till now it looks terrible IMHO!
Even the Icons in the file explorer look better on fullhd then highdpi -.- -
Boy... Prisma kind of sucks... 404 links in the documentation...
gotta look trough github examples to figure out the list of directives available...1 -
What news sources or blogs do you guys use to keep up with your current stacks, or even use to get into other stacks? For example, I usually keep within the Microsoft world of things, so I spend some time periodically going through patch notes on .net or the latest version of vs. If I want to get out of my comfort zone Ill look at a blog like hanselman, or I used to look at spolsky's blog before he went pretty inactive.

For mac os lovers out there.. wanna make your ubuntu look like macintosh??

Hi everyone, good to be back (my phone died, backup one wasn't able to run devRant). I wonder what I missed. Probably a lot considering how many amazing stories and discussions appear here daily.
But I digress. So I wanted to ask if anyone is planning on going to HackYeah hackathon in Krakow, Poland? Just curious if I should look out for any familiar orange stickers. -
