I was writing tests at work and rather enjoying myself.

Boss insisted we all go home early because "holiday halfsies," so I semi-unhappily pack up and go home. At home, I write tests for a personal project instead.

Free time... sometimes I want to program, learn new stuff and work on personal projects, but sometimes I just want to be a couch potato and play hours and hours of video games...

I had my first nightmare in years:

I was at work, and suddenly saw that my NS has changed for my personal domain. I also saw that the domain has transferred to another provider and a company had bought it and had it for sale for $7000.

I woke up, but it took 10 minutes before I realized it was just a dream.

When I'm at work, can't wait to go home and work on my personal projects.
When I'm home I cook, I eat then I'm too tired to do anything except watching Netflix on the couch.
Then I go to bed frustrated for not having actually done anything I really like.
Am I the only one?
Is there any escape from this?

Please tell me I'm not the only lazy bastard that spends all week dreaming of the weekend to finally work on some personal projects and when it finally arrives as soon as I launch the IDE my motivation goes down to -100 and I spend the rest of the day watching random videos on YouTube as always dreaming of the next weekend to finish that awesome idea I had 5 years ago...

This is my work desktop. Since I'm working in a Japanese office, they're very specific about making sure your workspace is clean and tidy at all times. Also they expect you to have very little to no personal items on your workspace.

The mini whiteboard is my best tool. It makes it easier to work out minor concepts or to explain things to co-workers.

Personal projects are the best.

Coming home after work.
Cooking diner and cleanup, dishwash stuff.
Giving some attention to partner.
Exercise, because you have been sitting all day.
And then the one hour that is left before you need to sleep. You fire up the project just to realize that you forgot what you have been doing. And start browsing devrant instead.

When I was 12 I started programming by makimg games. Then when I was 18 I stopped with a game dev study (because of personal reasons). I went to a web dev study and found work 4 years later. Today my company hired a new sales person who has worked at a few game dev companies and she said she will try to put me on game dev projects.

1. I tend to work too much (by choice), which impacts my personal spare time heavily.

2. I tend to not let loose of a problem until it is solved. This often results in longer work hours or me not taking brakes...

I have a 9-5 development job and I also have a personal web application I am building and plan to bring to production.

There are simply not enough hours in the day. I struggle to find enough time to work on my personal project while still performing well at the 9-5 and spending some time with my family so I'm not absent.

Agh I wish I could pause time for productivity 😂

There should be a devrant Meetup one day. Basically The community just gets together, rants about stuff to each other but in person so we all meet our social interaction requirements for the year. Then we could buy swag and sit on our computers and work on our personal/group projects. It would give devs a great excuse to take a vacation once a year.

Everyday single day I have to give time for family, personal work and office. Prioritized in that order.

End result : low quality family time, pending personal projects. Office work - well that one is OK I guess cos the time is dedicated.

Solution : made a deal with wife - one day on weekend dedicated for family (she can plan anything she wants) and I will not do any work. Other day dedicated for my personal work/time (no family plans).
Divide weekdays similarly. On family days I checkout at sharp 4pm from office and come home straight spend the rest of the day with family alone. On the other days I stay either at office or go somewhere to work or hangout with dev buddies.

End result: Quality family time. No interruption when coding (a dev would understand the importance of this). More productive work.

Joined a call during a potentially important life event. Work laptop password expired this morning, personal laptop didn't connect to vpn, desktop not connecting to vpn. No one knew what's wrong on the call (just that it's not working).

Used to work overtime on complex features, every engineer was 10x, learned a bunch, worked my ass of everyday. Switch due to overtime and because I wanted more personal time.

Anyways, at the new job I’ve completed two tickets in a month, code is shit, no one cares about the quality, scalability, etc. I’m payed 2x more and I currently work max 3 hours a day. Feels weird AF. I guess I got what I wanted, but didn’t know back then that professionally I’m going to degrade. Didn’t happen yet, but I can see that in the future.

Working for a company where the coworkers working 24/7 and the boss (ceo) expect me to do the same, even working on weekends.

that feeling when your new toys from aliexpress get delivered earlier than expected... i feel so happy unpacking those sensors, capacitors, heat sinks, microchips, breadboards and all. i feel like i have a geeky shopping addiction, i probably won't have the time to play with them from all the work and other personal projects, but still i hoarded enough electronics to invade the world with a drone army in case i have a few weeks me-time.

One shitty thing about working in a Japanese company is that they make you write personal goals/targets (目標). These goals they expect you to achieve don't actually relate to your work most of the time and it's not about personal growth, but more about what you did to improve the company.

Another thing is their expectations that you can achieve all this within a year on top of your work is kind of unrealistic. Plus even if you achieve such goals, it does not equate to good performance review and/or salary increases.

When you have tons of of work to do but all you can think about is a cool personal project...

I’ve been ranting & posting a lot about my career, relocation, work life balance etc. in the last year.

Just wanna say, relocating was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. Professionally and personally..
Although it was a bit scary and I didn’t have any money left after relocating..

It’s 6PM, I’m sitting in the garden, listen to some classical music and don’t spend a single thought on work.
Tomorrow I will arrive in the office around 7:45, I will do my work. My boss recognizes my teams effort and thanks all of us for the work on the end of each sprint.

There are no personal fights in the team, everyone is getting along with the others.

I do some good work, get a good salary and don’t have to mix up work and personal life.

The people here are awesome, everyone is welcoming and supportive.

If everything goes as planned, I’ll be able to buy my dream car by the end of summer because the government doesn’t take all of my money. They take their taxes before I get my salary and the money I get is the money I HAVE..

I think I might get close to a burnout. Last week was extremely stressful because of a deadline and I worked 45 hours in 4 days. Even in the evening my heart is pounding like a coke addict who had his last nose 1 hour ago.

However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...

Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.

Well, today was a fun day playing with Qubes OS. I really did nothing really difficult, I created a template for multimedia pruposes (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify and VLC) based on debian and then create a domain based on that same template.

Still need to fix the screen tearing, but it is nothing really serious, in fact I probably just change the graphic card to the integrated on the motherboard to see if something change.

Probably the next issue will be set a few domains for specific issues:

Working on my personal projects really shows me how rushed the work is were I work, and it drives me crazy.

I know my code works 100% in my current project as it is unit and e2e tested, so I can edit it until the cows come home.. at work though, different story.

I'm trying the latter but it's nearly impossible to do anything productive at home after 9 hours at office..

So I had plans of hammering out ludum dare and personal game work... But instead discovered the glory that is extra stout Guiness... Struggled to type this out and Im not even mad!

Today stayed few hours of overtime again in work to make more progress before incoming deadline. As I was just to leave office my coworker who was overstaying too asked for help with one last thing today and then we go. I helped him and in that time some guy hit my car on parking :p

Perfect. Now I'm out of personal time AND car for a week.

So I'm rebuilding my personal site, creating a nice layout, etc. I only just thought about checking how it looks in ie. That horrible bastard browser just fucks up the layout, and I'm not sure why some css rules don't even seem to fucking work. Probably gonna say screw it and not support ie, but it still sucks.

AI won't take our jobs. It will create possibilities we can't even imagine right now. We will work together with AI. Just in jobs we can't conceive right now.

Heck, do you think a programmer in the 70s would phantom that personal PCs would take his/her job? It just opened the possibility of programming to the masses :D

Do any of you have two browser instances for personal and work things? I do at least, and it's so annoying when I click a link and it opens in my personal browser instead of my work one.

So I made a script that I set as default browser that checks the link and opens the correct browser. Oh boy do I love Linux :D

Following online course on machine learning, instructor says we'll use python 3.x as the interpreter for the project, boot personal laptop and start pycharms, create the file, choose right interpreter no big deal
pip install the modules I need for the course - done, try to import them.
Doesn't work, first reboot, still not working, browsing Internet for answers, no ideas, reboot again (you never know) reload pycharms, browse Internet again, find out the modules only work on python 2.7.

After 3 month of work when we presented the same they then told us to scrap the project. what they wanted was cloud storage space which i am now implementing using amazon s3 FUCK THIS FUCKING STARTUP

When you spend 9 hour at work, 2 hours in that fucking exploded bus, tries to spend time with friends and family, spend enough time with that one special person, try to sleep descently and manage to work on your personal projects during that two hours in the bus, and that each day, each week, the whole year.

But when today I loose two months of work because of a hardware problem and that (because I don't have internet in the bus) I didn't backup on GitHub , I just have lost all motivation and will!

In an office where I used to work, we would send an email from the offender's account to the extended org about how he/she loves bacon.

One guy would start sending messages to every personal IM contact: "you suck." Over and over.

I come from an older generation where we didn't mention personal lives or politics at work. I can be productive and befriend people that are opposites of me politically, as a matter of fact I kind of like it. My complaint is when tech companies as a whole broadcast their views. They have every right to but does it make good business sense? I am also not comfortable with people broadcasting personal details about their personal lifestyle in a professional setting. I like to be lifestyle and political neutral in business.

90% of my time at work is spent debugging and fixing a horrible mess of years-old legacy spaghetti. The only "real" coding I do is my personal hobby projects at home.

The manager is there when you arrive at work, and is still there when you leave. He never seems to leave his desk, not even for lunch, except for the occasional meeting.

We never see him do anything other than work, but sometimes he joins in on personal conversations with other colleagues, which usually ends the conversation rather quickly.

One, where I'd to work on multiple technologies, comfortable timing i.e 6 - 7 hours a day. Enough time to do personal projects.

Other, I'd to work on single technology stack, but more complex and large projects. Good for architectural and design pattern knowledge. Better pay, but stressing work hours like 8-10 hours daily. Might be on weekends as well.

You're working on a project, your boss has set you tasks to complete. You complete all the tasks and make pull requests of all the work you've done. Your boss is busy and you don't know what to do next? What do you do? Is it unethical to work on personal projects in work hours, because you're not being paid for that? How do you find other stuff to do?

I work with a guy who is genius in his field, but doesn't have much ability outside of it, his view is we should all know what he knows and not bother him with bugs in his code we should fix the issues ourselves. Oh how the shoe was on the other foot when he needed help with a personal app.

We were forced to work from home since our region is under "Enhanced Community Quarantine". I brought my work computer at home so I don't need to set up shit on my personal computer. After 2 days, I lost my internet connection and I can't contact my fucking ISP, their office is closed and their customer service doesn't exist. I am now under No Work No Pay policy. Fucking what the fuck.

My biggest personal challenge as a device? Staying on topic and meeting deadlines. I get too caught up adding bells and whistles because I want my work to be badass. So badass that I forget that I'm supposed to release it and not spend months working on adding features

"Non-technical" users must have some magic skill that goes beyond my understanding. How can anyone work with no-code page builders? I tried Wix, Webflow, Gutenberg, Elementor, Divi, and Semplice. Each one sucks in their way, but they have one thing in common: their UI behaves even more erratically than Microsoft Word.

If it’s a personal project, I’ll put it off for a while and do something else to switch things up - I might work on a different project for a day and then pick the first one up again.

If it’s a work project, I can’t naturally put it down, but I might just drop it for a shorter period of time, like a minute or two. Get up, take a walk, refresh my thoughts.

This may of course be a slippery slope for some, but for me it’s proven effective in juggling my projects.

I'm working on a rev share game, something I think could be really good but I don't have the personal funds to really throw myself into. I've spent so much time finding a team and getting everyone on the same page, and they all seem really excited about the project.

Now, however, I'm having so much trouble getting them to put in any effort and meet deadlines. I've tried searching for more people but it's so hard to get people into a project like this, and all of the incentives and work I put into getting them to work are ineffective.

Managing a project is fucking hard.

We've been using private GitHub repos as a distribution method for our personal npm packages at work for years.

I finally got sick of it and did the work to publish them to artifactory yesterday. Today, I worked out the remaining kinks, fixed the CI builds, and wrote a wiki page explaining the change with step by step migration instructions and sent it around to the rest of the devs. And it's working great!

I feel simultaneously like a hero for finally getting this fixed and an idiot for putting up with it for so long.

Also thankful for my devops friend who helped a bunch.

Do you prefer working remote or in the office?

I like to view these as equal choices. I don't think offices are as bad as some people make them up to be (of course heavily depends on the environment and company!). In opposed to working remote, offices can help you focus more on work and leave work problems "at work".

While, if you're working remote, it's not unlikely for work and personal life to become so intertwined that it's hard to tell them apart anymore. It's hard to not think about work at home if home is where you work.

I believe an ideal is somewhere inbetween - not entirely remote, but not entirely office focused either. Mixing and matching seems like the one approach where you get to have most of the benefits, but with the least negatives. It doesn't seem necessary to always be at the office but it also doesn't seem good for you to always be cooped up at home.

Fuck, I just found out that I have to replace the (pooled) company laptop, which I sometimes take home with me to continue some (work related) side projects, by myself if something happens to it.

Team lead asks me why I do that .... Because I am stupid enough to invest some spare time to get more valuable for the company, asshole.

While we're discussing options, we should also consider maintaining a list of users as a CSV^H^H^H MS Excel file, and install an authentication server that runs off the laptop of an "IT Administrator". That way it'll be super secure because hackers cannot access any system outside of working hours, as well as the days that said admin is off from work.

I asked on LinkedIn and the response was that personal websites are a bit 90s.

I am, slowly, making a github pages site, and I know no one is really going to be interested in my thoughts on certain topics etc, but I felt it would be a bit more attractive than just a link to my github account.

Do employers care about portfolios/github accounts etc? Or are the only interested in CVs and certificates?

I am in this weird situation, where I work with a pretty cool team and have an awesome commute to work, and a nice salary. Got placed at LnT Infotech through my college placements
Free-lanced at a company for four months and got a job offer from them with the same salary. But the work load is too much. There is no such thing as personal time. It's work 24*7. However, the exposure is good. For one of the projects I was the PM. Had dinner good exposure. But as I said, to much work. I lost quite some weight in the one month that I was the PM.

So now the problem is, should I join an MNC where my exposure will be terrible or a start-up where my personal life will be terrible

Do you guys worry about your non disclosure agreements at work? I use my personal computer at work so I do my own projects on the same computer as work but it makes me a bit uneasy. We're a broke startup and I'm lucky to have the job so I'm not going to ask for a computer.

Here’s my setup, a little late. I use the dual monitors with my work computer and laptop + monitor for personal computer.

Just started working for a small engineering company ~10 employees. They have a single guy that have done most og the development work and version control management. Turns out everything was stored om his personal harddrive with a backup on an USB drive. I'm doing the "dirty work" on porting the version control to a network drive. Not ideal, but the boss was insisting on doing it this way. Have anybody encountered anything like this?

Normally when I revisit an old project feel like tearing out my awful old code and rewriting it all - not today; today I feel like I am backsliding. I sidelined my personal project months ago when my real work got busy.

I have spent the evening discovering all the cool shit the project does and wondering if I'll ever get my head around it all again.

I've got into an impasse.
I'm working as a mobile developer for one of the well known multinational corporations. I am working here for 1.5 years, it's my first job and I'm already a team leader. It doesn't mean that this is my programming experience. The problem is that I'm feeling that this job stops me from growing on personal plan. I have no more time to work on my personal projects, i have no real portfolio, projects made for the company cannot be included in my portfolio and so on. And also the payment isn't real good so i can't quit and allocate my full time to my own projects. And without a good portfolio i can't get my own customers.

What do you guys would do in my situation.
