Met a cute girl at the ATM today.
Long story short, she gave me her Instagram account and I ended up giving her my GitHub account.13 -
preface: I'm fucking exhausted and angry.
Why does everyone assume I know how to do frontend?
Why am I always the design girl?
Why?
You hire me to do backend. STOP GIVING ME FRONTEND DESIGN CRAP. I HATE IT.
AND STOP GODDAMN YELLING AT ME FOR NOT MAKING SOMETHING RESPONSIVE.
I DON'T KNOW HOW.
yes i can learn, but I CAN'T FUCKING PICK UP A SKILL LIKE THAT IN A DAY. Also, I fucking hate it.
STICK IT UP YOUR (min-width: 1400px) ASS.
But seriously, I've spent 13 hours today figuring out completely new things (webpack, susy, express.js, cloudinary, responsive best practices, more webpack) because the boss is in panic-mode (his preferred state) and wants this project released last monday.
guess what? it isn't done.
because i still don't know how to do everything. and ofc there's nobody to ask because there never fucking is.
Seriously, boss-man. hire a fucking designer, and stop being an illiterate sales goon while you're at it. ffs.54 -
I'm giving up alcohol for a month.
Wait that came out wrong.
I'm giving up. Alcohol for a month

Today, after two hours of debugging, my girlfriend called me to break up.
Then my backend started giving strange errors about some unmet dependencies.10 -
Me: Hey, my laptop (with stickers on it) is in for repair, can't get any work done.
Friend: Oh, that sucks, we going to be delayed launching our app!
... few days later ...
Friend: Hey, did u get it back yet?
Me: They ended up giving me a brand new one cause they couldn't repair it.
Friend: That's awesome man, you got lucky!
Me: F*@$ that, I LOST MY STICKERS!7 -
iPhone app riddled with memory leaks from a team of interns. Big series of demos coming up. Managements solution?
Send instructions to the person giving the demo to kill the app every 20 mins or so.1 -
If. You. Don't. Contact. Us. With. A. Registered. Email. Address. Or. Phone. Number. Then. I'm. Not. Giving. You. Any. Information. Relating. To. 'your'. Account.
Oh you "don't agree" with that?
Guess what, never gonna give you up!
Oh, typo, that should've been: never gonna give a fuck!
No, seriously, I couldn't care less.48 -
So the first hackathon I attended my team and I came stone last. So while we wait for the awards I have 3 beers to drown my sorrows (I am a 2 beer guy so I was already feeling it)
We go into the ceremony and there were not enough chairs at a table for my team, so I end up sitting at the winning teams table. Let's just say I adopted a bottle of wine.
A wine bottle down I am feeling super drunk. I told myself "no more booze" ... Then the tequila's started rolling. I must have been quite visibly drunk because the other people at the table were giving me more to drink. Eventually I was like "I am ok, I am ok"
I wake up 2 days later on the floor of my bedroom at my parents house. Apparently this is what happened after the tequila's:
I decided to have an awards ceremony of my own and hug EVERYONE, apparently one judge did not enjoy his drunken hug very much (lol). Then I threw up in the hotels courtesy car, and also ran backwards into their bushes.
A buddy of mine took me home, but was to scared to face my parents, so he dumped me (now asleep) on the my parents driveway, rang the bell and buggered off, leaving my parents to drag me inside.3 -
After spilling coffee on my laptop, and giving it in for servicing (luckily completely covered under warranty), I walked in today to find this one arrived today. I needed cheering up, so thanks!
-
Wrote 800-1200 LOC
It went through code review which was apparently my first code being reviewed
Took me 1 month and more to fix most changes (per day more than 10-12 hrs of effort)..
That 1 month was a nightmare. Every day I thought of giving up programming. I shouted to myself every night why did I never considered these myself. How can I be so dumb.
Half of the reviews I didn't even know how to implement. Didn't even know what to Google.
I consider it as one of my toughest phase as a developer till date.
I still get goosebumps remembering those days.9 -
So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5 -
Personal projects are the best.
Coming home after work.
Cooking diner and cleanup, dishwash stuff.
Giving some attention to partner.
Exercise, because you have been sitting all day.
And then the one hour that is left before you need to sleep. You fire up the project just to realize that you forgot what you have been doing. And start browsing devrant instead.
Great day. let's try again tomorrow.5 -
PhD applications in computer science are so fucking frustrating. I have responded to so many invasive questions so far. The only private information universities haven't asked yet, is my bra size. The only contact they haven't asked for yet, is my kindergarten teacher (And her bra size, coincidentally). The only document about a potential project I haven't given to them yet, is my freaking dissertation. None of these have anything to do with my research potential, btw. There's nothing asked of me about my research aspiration and how I actually undertake a research project.
And then suddenly it occured to me: people in Academic administration are not smart. I'm actually explaining my potential to a pretty dumb bunch (Excluding those in research, none of whom will bother with these stupid documents).
... The world seems to revolve around stupid people. Fuck.19 -
Believe it or not, this community has helped me overcome my impostor syndrome.
It's such an enormous relief whenever I open the app and read the rants, and I can actually relate to or understand many of them. It restores not only my confidence in my knowledge and skills, but also my motivation to learn and grow. It gives me strength to push forward instead of giving up on this path.
Thank you DevRant, rant on you awesome fuckers! :)4 -
One team was delivering for 12 months.
... but definition of done not met. Code crap everywhere. Tests barely there and are total mess.
I inherited mess after previous lead engineer.
I exposed all the issues to the management in a straight way, no sugar coating.
... and now guess who's the bad guy for "complaining" instead of shut up and "making it work"?
P.s.
"Giving accurate report about situation" is seen as "complaining".7 -

devRant is truly amazing, a social network where I don't have to give up on privacy by giving out my number to confirm that I am legit when I'd use something as a VPN to protect my identity (unlike twitter facebook and google)
Thanks for giving a fuck about privacy and not giving a fuck about my data11 -
If a CPU were an employee...
CPU: Hey boss, I'm seeing you are giving me a lot of mathematical tasks that would really profit from splitting into parallel calculations. GPU's are great for that, we should get one.
Boss: But you can still do them, right? If you can do it, I'm pretty sure you can do it at GPU speeds. We gotta save up so I can buy another car!
----------------------
Boss: Why is this taking so long?
CPU: I'm overloaded with work, so I'm overheating. Maybe you could buy a GPU to help me out, or at least a fan...
Boss: You're overheating? Your personal problems should not affect your professional life. Learn to get your shit together or we will hire someone who will
CPU: *melts*1 -
I'm freaking the fuck out.
After months of learning from bootcamp and on my own, after a month of no resumes replied to, after almost giving up I finally got a job opportunity in front-end web development.
The thing is, I have to pass their online test to verify my JavaScript-fu.
3 hours.
4 tasks.
And I feel like garbage who can't understand even the most basic algorithms.
By the power of Grayskull, I don't think I have the power...
Wish me luck.16 -
MASTURBATION!
Just kidding. What are you, @Agred, twelve?
Mostly I'm going for a walk. If somewhat cleaner air won't help me I'm giving up entirely and driving home. Most of the times it gets the job done, as after around 20 min of driving my head gets clear enough to find some idea to push forward with task at hand.
Playing some video games for few minutes also let's me rest a bit and sometimes find a solution. Although this isn't something I would do often in the office for obvious reasons.13 -
why is it so hard to convince people to start using slack chat and giving up sending internal emails?10
-
The company I recently started working for are young guys my age, who want me to create awesome stuff, however I feel is best, and they let me think and try stuff, like new cool design ideas and use latest API's to create the most modern site possible. "Whatever you think is the best way to do it"
And I'm paid a decent salary. This is the first job I liked. Ever. I literally wake up early to get going, and work overtime (without them knowing nor paying extra) because I think this project is so amazing and I feel like giving back.. I usually hate PMs, but these guys rock.4 -
Does anyone else fantasize about giving up programming and go live in a jungle or doing other things that require more physical effort?
I've been learning carpentry, farming, DIY power generation etc. The goal is to be self-sufficient and go live in a fucking jungle someday. Or legally buy some cheap land far from the city and automate the shit out of it. No wait, I'll just live there as a normal farmer and write code if I feel nostalgic or something.
I think anyone other than me could have expressed that better.14 -
I'm officially CTC.
Chief Technical Clown 🤡
How do I know? I've yet to write a single line of productive code today. I've spent the day purely as an administrative cog: writing emails, giving data to consultants, supporting juniors, and cleaning up the absolute hellscape that is also known as our Jira project.
I've become exactly what I hate.12 -
Today I've been mocked by a fucking coffee machine.
So I was at a small train station, everything was already closed except for a small coffee machine
Dumb I, for whatever fucking reason, decided it'd be a great idea to get a highly overpriced cup there.
Now, the fucker made me the drink but instead of giving change, it started "shooting" coins in my direction (there was no flap on change box)
As I'm picking up my change, this abomination of a machine performs a cleanup, spitting some shit into my drink
I couldnt drink it obviously .. threw the overprices drink away, bought another one... Got shot with coins again... Whata pain... Just to figure out... There's no more cups 😭😭
It made the drink into the tray...

If you’re having trouble with the bossman’s ‘tude
He’s giving you the blues
You wanna dev, but not for this dude
Here’s what you gotta do:
Pull up the CV, it’s that easy
Send it every time
Just use a throw-away email, hey.10 -
First they came for the atheists, and I didn't speak out - because I'm not an atheist
Then they came for the university teachers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't like universities
Then they came for the gamers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't play videogames
Then they came for Open Source and I didn't speak out - because "anyone can fork it"
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me
I know I butchered the poem and I'm not comparing our social situation to the Holocaust (obviously), but I think it kind of illustrates that silence and gradually giving up ideals like justice and meritocracy can end up badly.
I also encourage you to read the actual poem it's pretty nice and food for thought.5 -
Fuck my fucking life. Laptop of about 6 years is finally giving up on life and I don't have a big budget right now..
Anyone advice on a new pc? I want a desktop one this time. 16gb ram minimal.
😥44 -
I Quit,
Finally I quit.
This feels good after the countless red flags I raised to management and wishful thinking that this time things will be different. For the past year!
This time I lost the optimistic approach and got myself a couple of interviews, thinking, I'm in this for the long haul, could be 6 months could be a year, evantually I will succeed. and what do you know? It works, I can still pass those.
Then I set down with myself and thought, should I come to managment before signing the contract? Giving another chance for a real change? The answer was a resounding Hell No!
So, yea, if you are in a tough position. Don't give up, think long term, and who knows that "long term" might just be a month.3 -
This happened sometime back..
A guy came to our university with a social network that he created. It was for students and professors to interact, to form study groups and earn points as they mark done topic as "studied". He made a deal with our university, so everyone was forced to sign up for this.
While he was giving a demo of the website, me and my friend started ranting.
"This website is shit. Why are we forced to use this?"
"This UI looks just like LinkedIn"
"This top bar is right out of bootstrap"
"I have seen that graph in one of the libraries. He didn't even change the defaults."
Another friend who was sitting besides us was hearing all this.
"I don't understand a word you guys are talking. It is too high level for me"
We replied, "Don't worry. We will talk in low level. 00101110010101..."4 -
I was asked to help with the website of this one club. Their 'IT head' is a business person. I told them no, but they sent me something anyways.
They sent me a zip file of their code
instead of giving me access to their GitHub repo. I then realized that they were using 3-year-old NodeJS and Express to power their static website and doing blog posts as JavaScript modules.
A second part of their architecture which was related to member sign up was horribly broken and also written in Node. I found out that they hard coded credentials to their Google Apps account, despite having the setup to pass it via environment variables.
And now they are worried that their sign up isn't working. Their developer resigned.
They want me to help them fix it within a very small timeframe. So they can use the code to collect membership fees.
This is what happens when you have business people develop code.6 -
Is a code truly tested until it has print("Fuck this"), print("Fuck that"), print("Fuck you"), print("Fuck me") spread along every code path?8
-
Funny how it's the conversation when I give my 2 weeks notice that all this comes up, like:
1) how they were "talking about giving me a raise"
2) how they were "hiring more people" so I could spend more time coding and less time doing bullshit
3) how they were going to fix all the other broken things in the company
How do you think it would fly if instead they fired me and I promised to fix everything that's wrong about my working there after the fact?
Anyway, I knew they would pull this bullshit so it was expected. Excited that I signed the new offer today. Finally getting market rate pay and expecting better work environment as well. 🐶3 -
I'm interrupted frequently during team meetings, usually by junior team members. I brought it up to my boss at a 1:1 and now he interrupts me more often than they do.
I wasn't giving you permission. 😒4 -
I'm not sure whether to cry or to burn everything to the ground.
I'm stuck in a rotten, over aged corporate that will one day choke on all the documents and formalism they require. Which is something I'm generally fine with. Each to their own.
But ever since I handed in my resignation they have been fucking me like I have never been gang raped before.
(A little context: I work for a midsize financial institute. Which at least in Germany are full of legacy projects and are regulated as all hell.)
So some fuckwits decided that since the regulator slapped us hard 2 years ago that we need to make up a new standard of documentation that has to be used for all IT-documentation there ever was and ever will be.
So the upper management (the before mention dumb-dumbs) choose some consultant company and locked them up together with the brightest stars (read biggest slime balls) of the IT department in an ivory tower and told them to pull some out the ass.
And one year later (early November last year) they got the shit they ordered. Gilden shit, only the most sparkly and non-sensical bullcrap you could imagine.
But they only looked at it and deemed it good. Now the guys actually in charge of the the applications got served the dish. And guess what they found out when started to dig into? Nothing but contradictions, non-final thoughts and all of that held together by web of retarded, unusable guidelines. But they ate it, they cursed but they swallowed forced by disciplinary punishments waiting should they misbehave.
The only one emerging fact was: All previous documentation was completely invalidated.
But now the mighty lords in the ivory tower guided by the never failing hand of the higher management had the greatest idea of them all. They needed someone to check all the documentation till the end of this year but since they blew all of their budget on useless wankers ( oh, ofc I meant "highly qualified external help") they now preyed on the lowest in the food chain. Which is where this story goes full circle and comes back to me.
I was the lowest rank on the food chain, a student that just handed in his resignation.
I was the first to be locked up in the basement, my co-student followed shortly after.
And now I'm going to spend my last 2 months looking at checklists that we had to pull out of the slime's ass and validating hundreds of thousands of pages of documentation. We get grinded up in the endless hate coming from the guys that we need to tease and are held in position by a wall of sheer idiocy on the side of the rule makers.
Today I cried when I had to tell someone that his magnificent documentation was not standard conform and had thus no longer any meaning or right to exist.
Thanks you for those that made it this far down. I hope you never have to feel my pain.11 -
Boss giving a me a lift to work cause he wants to start work earlier since our ad revenue plunged during the weekends. One fucked up day coming up.3

STARTUP IDEA GUYS SUCKS!!!!
So today one of my friend asked me to do an app for him and finally share 50 percent of the profit that I get. His idea is to build an app that can measure air pollution level, water pollution level, soil fertility range. I was like "what the hell!"... The beauty is that he wants me to pay him 50 percent for giving such (stupid, retarded) idea.
Wondering when these "startup idea guys" will realize that ideas are cheap but execution is worth the millions! Fed-up with such stupid people.14 -
So ChatGPT with GPT-4 has dropped and it's only available through a paid subscription.
I hope everyone who started to become dependent on the "free" ChatGPT or started building a business on it feels pretty stupid right about now. Unless you pay up, everyone else who does pay will now have an edge over you. Congratulations for giving another monopoly into the hands of microsoft so enthusiastically.
The "open" part of OpenAI is such a joke...21 -
In my previous rants I used to shit all over Python.
Now, I am regretting those rants.
After giving up a on "writing Java with Python syntax", and learning to write the pythonic way, it finally clicked for me, and now I really like it!4 -
Due to inspiration of giving up with windows being slow (performance wise) always connecting to MS severs (I have slow internet) so it’s noticeable when I can download quicker on a raspberry pi then on a laptop - both over wifi 🤷♂️
And burning a fucking boot DVD for Ubuntu takes 3 fucking DVDs at 2.4x speed - before getting a successful boot disk 😞
I think it’s time to swap out this hdd and go to the dark side!12 -
Hate Pair Programming. You either have an over smart sob who'll just keep blazin through things without giving a fuck whether the other person is able to catch up, or you get a lazy asshole who just keeps checking facebook on his phone!! Fuck pair programming!!7
-
I'm getting so fucking tired of frontend development...
I still like part of it, but I really hate CSS, browser compatibility, stupid users, dumb requests from product owners and fucking weird designs. And to top it all, it's the frontend team that handles all the pressure when the deadline comes up and the project's late, even if it was the product/design/whatever phase that took too much time.
Being a frontend developer is very stressful and has so many annoyances and I'm getting sick of it.
My company's been promising giving me some backend work because there are some backend-heavy projects coming up and they know I have the skills, but they just keep giving me frontend work. Also, one of our frontend developers is on leave, which means more work for the rest of us.
Why did I ever decided to do frontend development?6 -
Boss calls: "Can you give me more bandwith?"
Me: "I can, but the other coworkers will have issues"
Boss: "Doesn't matter, and please, lift up the proxy too"
Me: "I am sorry, but I can't, that could compromise our security"
Boss: "I am giving you an order..."
Me: "Ok then..."
Me: *proceeds to give boss more bandwith and lifts up proxy (all is lost now)*
I go to see what is the boss doing with the bandwith...he was downloading League of Legends in his personal notebook...
TL;DR: Boss asks to put company at risk for the sake of a game...2 -
This Chinesium power supply looks disgusting 😷 I have no idea what shit this manufacturer put their hands into when they built this piece of garbage (that nonetheless works without blowing up, go figure) but it's all sticky 😐 I want to clean it up before putting it into a new enclosure, but I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner and don't really feel like desoldering all the components and giving it a washing. Are there any other cleaning options that are inexpensive and don't damage the components or the solder joints? Pure alcohol perhaps?29

Most toxic work culture ?? oh boy where do I start.
Getting verbally abused and physical threats over bugs found in production.
All kinds of office politics going around where everyone openly admitted not liking others in other departments.
Your day's salary gets taken away if u are late by even 1 min. And no overtime pay and no you cannot say no to that either or end up getting laid off.
Company brags about giving their employees their salary on time.
Only the devs who have lasted more than 10 years in the company will be heard.
After so many job switches I managed to find one where I get to WFH and pretty much face no toxicity from others.8 -
My humble work setup. I took this a while ago and never posted it, figured I should get it up for this week's rant.
The extra touchpad and keyboard was for training the new girl and allowing her to drive while still giving me access to my box.2 -
Today in work I spotted a shoddy solution within the system. When I looked up who'd implemented it I found out it was me 6 months ago... Feel like going back in time and giving myself a slap
-
Man you know that feeling when you are considering just tossing everything away and giving up and buying survival gear and living in the woods away from civilization? I dunno I just want a break from everything and smell pines again.
Fucks sake.5 -
So last night i was dealing with some mysql query issues trying to grab some complex data from a relational database and ended up giving up.
This afternoon i was about half-asleep going to nap, not even thinking about the code and randomly came up with the solution.
A few hours later i made the changes and it works as intended.
Anyone else solve code subconsciously ? 😂😂😁😁12 -
I forgot to say the biggest distraction isn't that guy at work, no it's actually my job!
I'm an app developer but I want to be a game developer, it takes me so long to get to/from work.
This job is boring and I want to get another one at least closer to home and can at least pay me a bit more than minimum wage so I can save up more :/ but from the looks of things the jobs listed are the wanting experience without giving any. -
The project tech lead asks me to add some Docker configuration files sent by the client to a project. He gives me a zip file and I unzip it and add the files to Git. Job done.
Later he checks the commit and starts bitching because I unzipped the file and it should have been added as a zip. After much debate trying to explain to him that Docker wouldn't open the zip file to search for the Dockerfile he just says "Can you just do it? I double checked with the client!". I give up after giving him all the arguments why he is wrong and do it.
The next day the client checks the commit and comments bitching that I included the zip file and not the contents of it.4 -
You stupid shit jerk fucks.
Your request to disable the coming soon mode was hours ago. Of course google will show you coming soon text when you searched for it. It is not like google is under my arse or something.
And what do you mean it is not showing up on YAHOO!
Who the hell is still using YAHOO! ?
And that YAHOO! showed me that coming soon text result just like GOOGLE when I tried. So why is it not showing that to you? Oh right, maybe because you are old and stupid.
Today is already busy enough with packing our stuffs, stop giving us stupid tasks to fix.1 -
Follow up to my (ignorant) previous rant.
Context: Eclipse vs intelliJ
Situation: Was too comfortable with eclipse. knew shortcuts in the back of my palm. Loved the light theme. Argued with anyone who blindly believed IntelliJ is better than eclipse.
Action: Forced myself to try IntelliJ. Stepped out of my comfort zone. Got a one day code block. Changed to darcula. My eyes struggled to read. My fingers typed usual eclipse shortcuts to discover unknown windows.
Verdict: after two days of learning and not giving up. I have started loving IntelliJ and I know why.
Moral: change is good. Get out of your comfort zone ;)15 -
Not commenting enough, using if instead of switch, messing (and breaking) the IDE, not reading pop up messages, thinking and not doing, watching Netflix, starting on new projects before finishing old ones, complaining about certain languages, googling instead of figuring it for myself (sometimes), let my friends persuade me into making something for them, run-on sentences, not enough comments, giving up quickly, not doing adequate research, and of course, not writing down good ideas I have.9

"Systems open to all, but closed to intruders"

Last week, a company(start-up) came for campus recruitment.
This company was known for its long working hours, giving unrealistic deadlines to the employees, less recreational activities, etc.
Even though the pay was very good, some of them were there just to experience the interview process. All those waiting for the HR round, were half-hearted into the process.
This particular guy(a friend of mine) was so determined to be rejected from the company, that he intentionally screwed up his interview (final round).
Towards the end of the interview, the HR asked him to draw a map/path from his hostel to the building in which the interview was being taken.
Once my friend finished making the figure, the interviewer said “Take this same path, and get back to your hostel”.
SAVAGE!
Even though he was successful in getting rejected, the way he got rejected really crushed his ego.2 -
My phone is finally giving up.
It's broken beyond repair, and the screen is starting to fail completely. I managed to fix it enough to pull my data off, and post this.
It's been my reliable companion for years, and we've gone through a lot together. You will be missed, Glassy. 🙁12 -
F@#$% ANDROID STUDIO! You should definitely add a feature of giving a Pop-up window asking if the user REALLY WANTS TO OPEN THE SOFTWARE OR NOT!
You should see my face when I click on android studio icon by accident 😩 on my Windows...6 -
My boss pays me well and treats me well, but he expects me to do project management (documentation, giving tasks to 2 junior devs, reviewing their code, helping them when they are stuck), coding, architecture and to finish the project in a time record time.
When I told him that this week I will not work on development but will start to do documentation because the project got so big that it is difficult to keep track, and also the other 2 developers are waiting for tasks for me to give them, he looked disappointed.
I noticed and told him that if he wanted to speed up development, he must hire another project manager, or another senior developer because I can not do them both and expect to finish in a record time.
He keeps asking almost every day, "When are we going live?"2 -
Yesterday I had an interesting interaction
- I complain about not having tickets for something, as it makes it unclear who needs to do what
- manager tries to call out on me for “not giving precise infos”
- A frustrating argument starts, ends up with manager defending himself telling we need a meeting with [other team] to sync on infos that are not clear
- meeting starts, manager starts to make a buffoon about himself
- other dev out of nowhere tells that the manager is not giving the task to him for some reason
- other manager is speechless at our manager’s incompetence
Managers.😎1 -
Wasn't so much a question but...
Before WFH got so popular, I was interviewing at a place 50km from home, loyalty and stuff came up and the guy said something along the lines of "The only potential problem I can see is the distance. Now I get the sense you're quite a loyal person blah blah blah"
Half way into my third month they decided not to keep me after probation, after giving no negative feedback at any point prior to that then "we just need someone mors senior"
So yea, tune me about loyalty and then do that....
Also, if they needed senior why were they advirtising junior?2 -
Postman needs to learn it's god damned place.
No, I will never sign up for an account you god damn crappy wrapper for curl written in electron. Stop giving me banner ads. Fuck SO FAR off.14 -
For fucks sake, how many times can you get the same error before giving up?
So, there's this form, and it's used quite frequently without fail, and there's this 1 user receiving an error that some data is incorrect, so... they submit the form again, and again, and again, and 6 more times with the same bloody error all because changing 1 fucking field is obviously to hard to recognise as the problem when the error says "you can not have 'x' in field 'y'"
Fuck it, do I need to replace 'x' with a blank, just because you can't read a fucking error message?13 -
"Time to install Arch Linux!"
*8 hours later*
"Back to Open Suse!"
Repeat every 4-5 months.
Seriously, I would LOVE to get Arch running on my laptop, but everytime I try to something goes wrong, be it bootloader, audio, cooptimus drivers, undetected network card, window manager going crazy, etc etc etc... and I simply end giving up and reinstalling my backup.
Someday, Arch, someday...4 -
FUCK THIS FACEBOOK ASSHOLES FOR GIVING MY NUMBER TO A CLIENT. FUCK YOU ASSHOLES. I DON'T SIGNED UP FOR GIVING OUT MY NUMBER TO EVERYONE .I HOPE YOUR COMPANY LOSE ALL THEIR ASSETS AND MARK ZUCKERBERG GO BANKRUPT .... FUCK YOU ...13

I'm resignating from Arch, Ive used it this week for a school project and as a linux newb- I cant do a lot. I have no clue how to print stuff, where to find my connected networks or how to connect to them etc. I like what it offers and I know it can be good but I'm too new to all of this to effectively use it. BUT I'm not giving up, I'll try Manjaro next as I read that it's newb friendly and I really like how it looks.
Also attached an screen of my Arch setup: i3gaps, plasma and whatnot8 -
My Flask App all of a sudden started throwing 'Error 500 - Internal Server Error' pages at me for a new subpage I made.
I couldn't figure WTF was wrong because the method responsible for the page literally just returned the HTML-template.
After giving up yesterday night, I noticed this morning that I forgot the quotes around the HTML-file name...2 -

So I've just been evicted, apparently the house I have a room in is being repossessed.

To people who have done tech support:
Shoot me. Do you know what it is like to teach kids to use a mouse? Or even type in a keyboard? They don’t even know how to double click. Gotta call google chrome the circle of colors for them to understand. Some think the video that is giving the instructions is actually them doing it. So when it ends they are like alright done.
FYI: working in an internship currently where we teach kindergarten up until 5th graders from scratch to Minecraft modding. Btw it is an unpaid internship.10 -
Why do simple errors take the longest to fucking find!
Was using the geolocation api (js) to get the current longitude and latitude of my location. Stored them in an object to use in a fetch(). Every time I ran the fetch it was giving me the wrong location!
1hr later I realized I had used.
Fetch(https${longitude}blablabla${longitude})
After realizing this mistake and everything I that lead up to that moment I closed my MacBook and took my ass to sleep.
Moral of this story is...take fucking breaks.
Goodnight1 -
boss: *showing me the new platform*
me: "oh that looks like a good demo"
boss: "ah no that's the product! we're going to put this live"
me: "wh... there's no update nor delete function for anything! where is the user profile? where are the menus??"
boss: "that's ok, we'll take note when people start using it"
and now
boss: "we've concluded the product was bad and we're giving up on it" -
I don't get it. Bethesda managed to make the best temporal antialiasing solution to ever grace this planet with TSSAA in Doom 2016 and then manage to fuck it up by removing it in favor of forced TAA in Doom Eternal which looks like complete dogshit
WHYYYYYYYY
The graphics were /literally/ the reason I bought the damn game. I just finished Doom 2016 and it was so inspirational for my own game engine, giving me motivation by seen what I can achieve. Doom Eternal is fucking depressing from a technical standpoint
Well at least I know now that my own AA solution is viable and that I can do better than a AAA studio :emotionless-shrug-guy:8 -
I swear upon the gods of the internet! Any time I am trying to read an article/blog post/anything and the site puts a god damn pop-up form asking me to sign up for something, I leave the site. ESPECIALLY ON MOBILE WHEN YOU CANT CLOSE THE DAMN WINDOW WITHOUT GIVING UP YOUR INFO.
And every time a client asks me to do this I nicely explain how much people hate pop-ups, 99% of the time I've closed the window or tab before I even read what the box is asking for, I don't care.
If the user is trying to read something, then they are trying to read something, and they don't want to be bothered with your ridiculous attempts for information gathering so you can spam them later.10 -
Been a really sad day today. Learnt this morning that my friend had died. Couldn't concentrate on anything but managed to give a nice report to boss on video call. Tried coding, but could only code a dropbox before giving up and firing up PES. Was so absent-minded the AI kept hammering me. Closed the damn thing and tries coding again but realized the combo box was that would get done today. Fucking sucks when you lose a friend. Even harder to take that he died after falling of a rooftop. Fucking suck!!2

Step 1: Download archlinux.iso
Step 2: realise your worthlessness
Step 3: Newborn awe for arch users.
Step 4: Ubuntu????
Just kidding though. Not giving up till system breaks atleast 7 times..😑7 -
My girl friend broke up with me few days ago without any solid reason. Today i stopped her and ask her why she broke up with me and she started giving stupid reasons whereas she was the one who was actually guilty of those accusations.23

Giving up/panicking/talking myself down when shit gets difficult ;/.
I always want stuff to work immediately, and I hate it when I don't understand something.
But since this is such a big part of working in dev, I should learn to keep going!2 -
When you face the dilemma of wanting to share devRant with your friends but face giving up your anonymity....also, what if you forget you ranted about them and they find out? Hmmm.....4

The most important skill you can have is doing things without shame.
Shamelessly stay in your bed all weekends watching PewDiePie, never brushing your teeth, eating Doritos from under your pillow and peeing into empty Mountain Dew bottle if you feel like doing it.
Shamelessly spend your vacation sitting in the toilet with a laptop browsing reddit.
Shamelessly cut your product in half and ship it if you don't feel like perfecting it.
Shamelessly admit that you don't know something when you messed something up at work.
If you are a millennial like me, chances are your gen x parents told you that you have to be perfect / really good to succeed and to be worthy.
You know what? Fuck your parents then. Fuck my parents as well. Admitting this behavior wrong and actually giving up on living like something is always watching is the best thing you can do to your mental health.
I'm lazy. I write "any" here and there when they force me to do typescript at work. When I need a sidebar, I go and copy-paste that jquery snippet. I write like one article a month at best and I really want to say "fuck it" if I just don't feel like it.
You can always give up on everything and it's perfectly fine. This doesn't make you any kind of looser or something. You're perfectly fine.
Too bad I'm only beginning to master that.9 -
!rant, just wanted to share

To all you fuckers out there giving bad app rating because some shit does not work on your shitty phone and you are to fucking lazy to report the bug via the fucking "send log to dev"-button that pops up with the exception.
Go fuck yourself.
And to all the user whose bugs I fixed and did not change their Bad rating - fuck you too.
And oh.. The fucktards that did not even install the app and give a Bad rating because i am your competitor - guess what...fuck you.8 -
Installs Ubuntu 16.04
Try to put my favorite software installed.
Reboot failed, drops to BusyBox shell.
Me thinking : I fucked up.
Friend walks by, couldn't read shit.
Friend: Look at his kid, he's trying to hack into someone's computer.
Me: (Agrees just for reputation) Yeah, damn teachers been giving me bad grades.
Friend: Could you help me too?
Me: (Don't have hacking experience, making shit up) NO, because your not my best friend. And school security is hard to crack.

There is a fuck-nut moron developer in my team who's been driving me crazy. I end up having multiple conversation with him on the same problem; I give him the solution; he nods his head and then makes the same mistake he made earlier.
I really want to help him learn and grow, but one can only tolerate so much stupidity before giving up.4 -
A few months passed. Still jobless. I am a php dev btw. In stead of giving up. I made a simple app allows people vote up and down restaurants I Melbourne Australia. https://melres.shopshop.space. I learn a lot about nodejs, react, redux, express, mongo, nginx, Ubuntu. I apply for nodejs job, IT support, DevOps, API job, backend job. All got rejected. Due to experience and competiton. I even ask I can work for DevOps for free. Still no reply. In stead of giving up, I keep learning, doing the thing I love. Focus on learn how to learn. Day in and day out. Hopefully it gets better.5

Today my life was saved by some fellow devs here on devRant and for those who helped(I will try to @yall in the comments), thank you so much you saved me! And more importantly saved me from all that fucking stress, which was plaguing me all day and breaking me down and lately I’ve needed that kind of pick me up. I felt so relieved I took a glorious nap! It was so needed and my head felt so much less like I bashed it into a wall piled with stress.
Recently I’ve started to actually make friends from people on devRant and it makes me excited because I can actually talk about programming/get help if I need it and they are able to. And talking things out and getting explanations for questions I have it just feels so wonderful.
Things have been luckily lookin up a bit and it’s giving me some hope and inspiration to do more.4 -

Just did a transplant on my friend's phone. He dropped it one too many times, and fucked it up real bad.
We were first going to simply put his SIM card into another phone. I had an old S6 that bricked itself during an update before I really knew much of anything about phones, so I dug it out and spent a day trying to restore it with heimdall, adb/fastboot, and eventually odin when I found a laptop with windows. Unfortunately it's a Verizon phone, and because Verizon likes to keep a tight chastity belt on everything, it was pretty much impossible to unbrick. After giving up with finding a custom recovery or flashing a stock ROM, we moved to Plan B.
We took both phones apart, switched the boards, switched the SIMs, and he now has a working phone in much better condition than before he dropped it seven feet from his girlfriend's bunk.
It's always fun to make life from two dead things.3 -
So, giving a talk soon and marketing wanted to see the slides.
Comments come back. On every slide that is purely visual they've suggested I add a title and a para or two of text.
Fuck you and your fucking slideuments. If you want them to read the material send them a memo and save me the fucking trip.
Or even better, turn up yourselves and read lists of bulletpoints off the screen for 30 mins while I sit in hotel hot-tub with a cocktail.
I hate the inanity of corporate life.
Next time I'm going to send you a blank slide and live draw my diagrams. See how you like that, arseholes.4 -
Last year I changed jobs from a large multi-national to a small local agency (which happens to be run by friends of mine).
One of the reasons for doing this was that my work involved more office politics than *actual* software development, and had just plain stopped being fun.
Now, I am having fun again! An example?
For one of our clients we have to connect to (a lot) of third-party APIs. Often even SOAP APIs!
Now I hear you protest "But that is no fun at all! SOAP APIS SUCK!" Which is true, more often than not. 😔
BUT! My friend started an internal API-SNAFU Trello board. Every time you get bitten in the ass by some ill conceived fuck-up of an API, you get to add your complaint to the board.
Beside giving as something to reciprocally rant about, the board also serves a serious function: depending on the amount of fuck-ups an API has been known to make, the price for working with that API will go up.
Who said it doesn't pay to complain? 😀1 -
Soooo.... It's almost summer alright.. Centralized heating is long gone already and they forecast +1C tonight.

Added a bond interface in my Proxmox installation for added cromulence, works, reboot again, works, reboot once more just to be sure, network down.. systemctl restart networking, successfully put the host's network back up.. lxc-attach 100, network in containers is still down apparently.. exit container, pct shutdown 100, pct start 100, lxc-attach again... Network now works fine in containers too.
Systemd's aggressive parallelization that likely tried to put the shit up too early is so amazing!
I'm literally almost crying in despair at how much shit this shitstaind is giving me lately.
Thank you Poettering for this great init, in which I have to manually restart shit on reboot because the "system manager" apparently can't really manage. Or be a proper init for that matter.

And yes I know that you've never had any issues with it. If you've got nothing better to say than that then please STFU. "Works for me" is also a rant I wrote a while back.12 -
Writing a truly crossplatform terminal library is the biggest pain in the ass.
And you thought windows was bad. They have a proper API with droves of features, freely allocatable screenbuffers, scrolling on both axes, etc.
Fucking xterm vtxxx compatible piles of shit are the problem.
Controlling kinda works eventhough the feature set is pretty bad. The really fucked up thing is reading values back. They literally get put into the input buffer. So you have to read all the actual user input before that and then somehow parse out the returned control sequence. Of course the user input has to be consumed so I have to buffer it myself. Even better is when you get a response with non printable characters which the fucking terminal will interpret as another control sequence. So when you set a window title to a ansi control sequence it would get executed when queried. Fuck this shit but I'm not giving up. I will tame this ugly, bodged together dragon7 -
I've really struggled to make friends with people who code... and it's been absolutely frustrating. Does everyone in this industry have a god complex or something? Everyone I try to make friends with ends up being super narcissistic and self obsessed it's crazy. One of them wanted to be my mentor a while back, and we still talk occasionally, but after getting to know him I decided I didn't want to learn from him. It turns out he only mentors people to showboat his greatness and claim later that all their success is directly his doing. I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people and I only ever had 2 sessions from him. One of the best choices I've ever made. But I've found a lot of people who are programmers tend to be a lot like him. A lot of them I talk to will hit me up to brag about themselves or what they've done. But none ever ask what's been up with me or how my journey is doing? Is this just a normal thing in this industry or am I just meeting terrible people. It's made me appreciate my slightly dumber friends, cause at least they care about me and it shows.
More a rant than anything, but genuinely curious if anyone else has this issue... I'm starting my bootcamp soon and I'm hoping to make friends but I'm so concerned about this it's kind of giving me anxiety.14 -
My mom (a single mother who had to feed 4 kids) feed me, let me stay in her house (at least until I was 21) and let me use the motorcycle.
Instead of running away and giving up her children to child institution (because that's probably what I will do being a selfish person that I am)
If that's not support, I don't know what that is anymore.
It might not be much but at least it gave me the time to grew up and be independent to pursue my dream of working in IT.
Her strength and toughness facing the hard life is also the main inspiration for me to keep going, to prove that I can do whatever I want if I put enough effort on it.1 -
I fucking hate the Internet
day before Yesterday, I was searching for a software on internet(which is not free) I found a site (unofficial) giving me both free full & trial version. so I thought, why not get the full version. I downloaded it, installed it. awesome.
everything was going great until I found out that all of my files in a folder were encrypted by some WankDecrypt. I was lucky the files in that folder were useless. but next day some mysterious links started to pop up into my browser. and today some fucking wank decentralized shit started eating up my ram. FML
Somebody fucking stuck his shit with cracked version of software. so beware devs.13 -
I work in a consulting firm.
I started right after graduation. I entered with candy glasses. Thinking is all well and ready to climb the ladder.
I entered as a junior developer.
On my first project, i am constantly belittled by my team lead. To the extent i suffer from ptsd.
On my second project, i am the only dev. I am amaze i manage to handle all the development job by myself for a year. Still i get nasty comments from my boss. Despite i am able to deliver on time.
On my third project. i left due to office politics.
Currently i am in my fourth project. The code is complete mess. The development environment is crappy. It doesn't reflect change right away.
My passion has dried up.
I'm seriously giving thoughts, should i switch career path.12 -
I finally bit the bullet and got a 2018 macbook pro i7 with 1 terabyte ssd. I've been needing a personal laptop for development for awhile. I thought about going full Linux but it's tough finding Linux laptops that support thunderbolt 3 charging.
I tried to make Windows and WLS work. But it's a pain getting my Golang, GCP, and Kubernetes workflow setup on it. I keep having to jump command prompts and it annoys the shit out of me. Going multi monitor helps a lot, but I like to be at coffee shops and code.
I feel sick a out giving Apple more money especially $3,000. But it was money well spent. My workflow is seamless and unlike on my Windows laptop I dont spend 3 to 4 days just setting up my environment.15 -
How fucking stupid can people actually be?!
So a Swiss ISP called "Swisscom" is giving out a Picasso, like the real thing for you to keep at home for a few days or so... and they built sensors into the Frame... AND THEY HAVE A FUCKING PICTURE OF THE GPS SENSOR IN THE VIDEO! Thats not the worst... why not OPEN UP THE FRAME AND STEAL THE PICTURE?!5 -
Woke up early, took my mom out for breakfast. It has been more than an hour, we have talked for about 15 minutes the rest of the time she has been on her phone. Was giving smartphones to boomers a mistake? Any boomer devs here that have fallen to the same addiction?
These old people and their damn mobile devices! Get off my lawn!8 -
I cant believe im crying while coding because i cant fix a bug. Is this a mild reaction of a burnout. Instead of giving up I'm literally crying and i cant control it. Good thing im alone in the room so nobody can see me9

Who's the dumbass that decided you can't delete your PayPal account at all unless your balance is $0?
I am not giving you my card information for the $0.18 balance I have. For God sakes, I don't even bend over to pick that up if I see it on the ground.
It's one thing if it were like $100 or even $10. But it's eighteen fucking cents. Not even a a quarter of a fucking dollar.
At least make me put in my password and answer a security question or some shit, not straight up remove the option to delete it.
Fucking ridiculous.21 -
tl;dr - why you no read this?
Here I am pondering why I continue to return to my job everyday when we are currently at month 13 of a 4 month project... yea let that set in for a minute... which is still at least 3-4 months away from being deployed due to annual leave of key stake holders and the whole Christmas period creeping up and things just not going as planned every step of the way.
There's no greater demotivater - is that even how you spell it - then being stuck in a project for so long you really just don't give a shit if it works or not anymore.
This has gone from a simple - relatively speaking - project to some monolithic mayhem of requirement changes and process adjustments, that have not only delayed our team, but 3rd party vendors needing to change things as well, or the requirements being wrong early so when you get up to business testing it's like "nope, that's not what we wanted" .... despite all the sessions of you personally giving the PM all the damn requirements.
But in saying that, they (3rd party) aren't innocent either, we have found nothing but issue after issue with their product since we started this project that who ever signed off on going forward with the thing should have been shot from both sides - it's not designed for the scale we will be using it yet we didn't find that out till we got so far into the rabbit hole we had a chance to be able to do load testing.
Meh, guess I'll go to work Monday and spend another week in misery trying to deliver something that just doesn't want to know what the finish line is.4 -
My colleague can be so fucking annoying I’m close to snapping. It’s morning, I just got it, didn’t have any coffee yet and he asks me “what did you do while I was gone?” (He was away sick a few days). So I start explaining to him the code changes we did and he takes it as an opportunity to interrupt me and ask more questions during my explanation. Mostly because he thinks it’s amusing. I continue explaining not giving in to his shit and he continues interrupting me and tries to make other team members laugh at his stupid face. No one does. I finally tell him to shut up and listen and he does.
It’s like having a kid run around, focusing on every sound other than what is important and trying to be funny when all that’s happening is everyone thinking he’s and asshole that should shut the fuck up. ARGH!!! So annoying.6 -
In context to my previous rant(s)*
As much as fixing up the pyload youtubecom plugin and giving back to the project sounds great, I'd be just shooting myself in the knee, because youtube-dl has active support that fixes things whenever they break, where as with the plugin I would have to constantly fix it based on what the youtube-dl project does.
So I might just write my own wrapper around youtube-dl since it apparently has progress_hooks that return all I'll need, might even get into python again, have been quite rusty on that.

I'm trying really hard not to be sensitive, but my manager is making it difficult with their "constructive criticisms" ...
Just finished up a call with them. And I'm so tired. I'm not even angry or upset, I just feel so tired of their bullshit.
I set up a meeting as a courtesy to get them up to date on all the code changes I made. Last night I stayed up late to try and get things in before the deadline and this morning just killed me when they say.
"I don't think I should have given you this."
"I was right, you weren't ready to start doing this."
(Then don't even bother giving me anymore tasks then, I don't fucking care.)
"you clearly don't understand how branches work"
(Absolutely fucking false, I fixed that shit and am very familiar with how to understand the structure of the fucking repo)
"you are rushing and I don't need you messing up the website"
(I'm being proactive you twat, not rushing, making it very difficult for me to do the work and being productive)
Like seriously bro! Don't fucking patronize me for the work I was trying to get out. And trust me this fucking meeting is done in order to get ahead of potential issues, not a time to be condescending of my skills or lack there-of as you seem to so keenly think.
If you had this much doubt about my abilities then why give me the fucking Sr. title? Fucking trust that I'm being honest, and I'm trying to get us to a good spot, not fucking sabotage the company. God fucking damn.6 -
*cracks knuckles*
Boy was I happy to see this when I opened devRant up.
So for starters, more group projects are necessary. Many reasons why. To begin with, it allows for more complex programs than getting some input and printing some shit out. It also develops interpersonal skills (I hate people too, but when you go out to look for work you'll be with them, so better get used to it soon). If a platform like GitHub is used, it's easy to track who did what, and see what each person in the group did, so it should be fairly easy to discourage lazy asses.
Beyond that, stop giving us half completed assignments and asking us to fill in a function/method. Yes, it will take longer. But one doesn't learn to program by doing the minimum required work, you've got to crash and burn a lot in order to git gud. So ffs, let us do all the work. We're like AI, we learn through reinforcement learning.
Stop giving us a spec to follow. We'll do plenty of that in the future, right now we need to make mistakes, not be held by the hand all the way. Let us do dumb shit so you can fail us and tell us our code is repulsive, and this other way was better. Explain why. That's how people learn, not by telling us what each function should return, what can and can't be used, etc. And if you can't come up with a scenario in which what you're teaching is useful, then maybe you're not teaching us the right material.
I'll leave it at that for today... But I'll be back 😈 -
SharePoint things that I get yelled at by customers for:
Setting up page permissions wrong (even though the real problem is that a coworker didn’t check the page in)
Writing the workflow wrong and nobody is getting emailed (even though they didn’t select who to send the email to)
Not magically knowing that they wanted the new intern (who started Tuesday) to be given full design rights on their page
Not magically knowing that their discussion mod quit a year ago (before I started here) and now nobody can feature a post
Not spinning up an entire new site so that they could post a link to a single sign up sheet for their team (of 10 people) barbecue
Somehow making it so MS Edge can’t handle high res images correctly (because I totally created Edge (which isn’t even a supported browser here))
Not responding immediately when they submitted a ticket at 7:00pm (I’m off at 5) asking me to change one word on a page they have edit rights to
Not giving their admin assistant global design rights for our entire organization
Not giving them access to a confidential folder that has nothing to do with their job
Telling the owner of aforementioned folder that they’re not allowed to store confidential data in SharePoint
Making workflows too confusing for them to figure out
Fixing shit workflows that their ex coworker built wrong
Generally having the word SharePoint associated with my name2 -
Last day in the office. I started remembering good old memories. Felt nostalgic and doubted my new job as they were not giving rise as per my expectation.
Then, my manager comes up with his divine improvement in the good working site (not for me but for other dev).
I felt sorry for my fellow mates and started praising my new job.1 -
One of the biggest challenges for me learning to program is my memory.
Some people can pick up concepts easily and have a field day. I have to keep practicing until I memorize it properly, and even then I have the tendency to struggle.
Does this mean I give up? Helllll no. I'm far from giving up with all the progress I've made.4 -

Thanks google for giving me the opportunity to work with neural networks without being an expert about them.

To sum it up:
1. Preprocess data
2. Use Automl to train classifier
3. ????
4. Profit1 -
not sure if this totally classifies as a rant, but here goes:
so my Pi is giving a lot of problems. can't install software, keep getting weird error messages. so I try DD a new image onto the card. does not work at all. tried on three different machines :D
next I try run rm -rf /
it's obviously totally fucked. nothing works. pull the plug and plug it in again to see what happens.... it boots up again :D all the commands are back. no files are gone.
and that's when I was like fuck this and I returned the sd card :D2 -
Funny topic. I normally am very understanding of incompetence when it comes from nothing more than lack of experience. Happens to all who at one point is a junior dev.
As long as people have the willingess to learn I find myself being very understanding.
I take a lot of effort in helping others, I don't mind at all, and I would rather take them extra 10 mins to explain how to do something than to slap people with rtfm and then blame them completely when their lack of experience messes up stuff. I also take care of providing isolated environments and giving explanations. Even when they screw up, it is isolated from the rest and I can teach them what was wrong, most of the time they figure it out themselves. It has made my coworkers respect me more, rather than being a total dick that believes that what I do is sacred and should be spared from newbs (like all the idiots in S.O) i take the approach of a very patient mentor.
But I am a hippie, shit works for me.
But I do not excuse shitty attitudes and arrogance. I find that not knowing is fine, but acting as if one knows all and then fucking shit up makes it bad.
Which is when I change, I am a hippie but can get violent pretty quickly.
I have been screwed over shitty attitudes more than incompetence. -
Started with a "Python for Kids" book when I was in fourth grade, hated it, but a week later I went to a summer camp with my friend where we made a cool CSS3-styled website. Then on, I've finished most of the courses on codecademy, and built some games and apps, and more websites that my friends wanted. Welp :/, if you need me I'll be making my AI or working on an OS. I guess you could say my process was giving up on Python ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can someone please write a plugin that automatically translates bug tickets into startup-ese? It would make it very easy to present the most common offenders to higher management on quarterly reviews.
Example:
-
$< "screen A is all messed up"
$> "We are disrupting the establishment in screen A"
-
$< "API B is not responding, giving timeout errors"
$> "We are facing logistical challenges in API B"4 -
Install 18.04 they said. It will be fine they said...
Well.
Apperently it hates my intel graphics card. It was giving me artifacts already during installation. It didnt boot after installation and got stuck on a purple screen with the mouse on it.
Got past that with recovery mode. Googled the solution snd they said "move mouse while booting" yeah that doesn't help.
It also didn't recognize the other monitors connected to it and since it comes without unity now everything was not where I'm used to look for it.
3 hours of grub mangleing, driver installing and a unity installation later, it finally works.
Installed terminator and oh, look, one of the most used short cuts is overwritten by some emoji pick bs.
Ffs.
Longest ubuntu installtion ever and it almost fked up the 16.04 aswell which is in dual boot atm.
And before someone says use Arch: ubuntu is a project requirement and Arch is not supported by the tools we need to use.12 -
I tried and I'm giving up. I have spent nearly two years of my life trying to teach kids to code but it feels like standing in quicksand I don't get to learn new stuff I feel myself turning into the kind of teachers ppl make fun of here. Wasted 2 hours of my life trying to make an actionbar display white text on a dark background after migrating the legacy code from ActionBarSherlock to the supportactionbar.
And guess what? That fucking actionbar still displays black text.
What. The. Fuck.
Giving up on this for today...2 -
After an year of not giving up, finally got a certificate. I am a certified developer now, how cool is that 😎😁3

So it's a sad day that I say goodbye to my moto 360 gen 2, purchased a ticwatch C2 and here's hoping the OLED screen and NFC capabilities are worth giving up my favourite watch...13

Today was:
30% setting u partitions for arch
20% fixing typos that caused some kernel panic
20% trying to find a good resource for Squid

Giving up expectations of people.
People don't know what the fuck they want, so what made me think they could actually deliver anything? Idk, but it doesn't matter now, my life has been easier since I stopped caring.1 -
Shit night. Sat at my fucking desk to work on my fucking tasks. Started at about 9:30. Now is 12:21 and I'm in my fucking bed.
Guess what I finished? 70% of the new template for fucking home page of one website.
I'm supposed to finish the new design for two websites and present at tomorrow morning meeting.
And I couldn't even finish one full page. My brain is just giving up on everything.
I just have to sleep and get up early. Hope my fucking body get up early. -
I just gave a simple API which fetches recent searches by pinging an index on elasticsearch to the UI developer.
She had just one job. And ended up calling the server every time it loads on every screen thereby reaching max limit of calls per second and giving 429.
QA are not even required to break your code. UI developers are more than enough :) -
Today I had a casual chat with my friend and we were discussing how human mind limits the things one can achieve. Like giving up after constant failures, or lack of determination, blaming destiny for failures. I told him I am never easy about the fact that your destiny is pre-written and you can't do anything about it. If you are willing, you can change it. You just need to have the right mindset.
He said I am going to do MBA after engineering. You can't be rich with just engineering. I told him if you work smart and hard enough, and just follow your passion, there is no need for an MBA. And he went on to tell me how top richest persons mostly comprise of businessmen.
I fear for the future. People like this with no goals when take up engineering, they blame everyone but themselves and the stream gets the bad name. People want money, but they don't want to work from the beginning. Even after that they give up too easy.
People like Bill and Mark were not pre-destined. They made themselves. They were just like us, but they never got satisfied with themselves. We all have the capabilities to be them or even better. We just need to keep driving ourselves until we reach there, we don't have to get satisfied. We have to keep improving and learn from our mistakes, then try again.2 -
I’m an idiot. Stackoverflow issue that I documented to a T. Javascript. So I put requirement of not having jquery or framework.
Get a comment about do I know it is working? My answer, debugging. They respond back with a question about debugging and some details I totally didn’t read.
Well, that was the bug. Chrome debugger was showing a message I didn’t understand. So they answered my problem perfectly.
But before realizing he answered my issue, I blew up. Of course I know what is going on. The debugger is showing me....did you even run my example?
I almost felt like giving up as a developer. Here is this awesome guy, solving my issue, and some dumbass like me has to be frustrated. Now he won’t respond to take a bounty he so awesomely deserves.
I’m still a dev. I just don’t feel so professional anymore... -
Guys who "can't get girls"… treat women like people, like, you know, like they're… humans? Because that's what they are?
Once I gave up on trying to give girls special treatment, I got a lot of attention. This goes both ways, no matter if you hate them/worship them. I was desperate, I gave up, I dropped my facade, and I went into my first relationship. I was never without a partner since I was sixteen. Partners kinda overlapped, and when I knew I was going to end a relationship, magically, another relationship emerged out of nowhere.
The only time I wasn't in one was after my ex left me when I was at the lowest point of my depression. I took two weeks off, looked for a partner more meaningfully, and boom, we're together for I don't know how long, we're in a polyamorous relationship, we never had a fight ever.
Overall, my number one advice is you should stop giving women special treatment psychologically. Talk to them just the way you talk to your friends at the bar, or to any person you're not sexually interested in. You being horny ruins everything.4 -
Introduce Git - Promote Collaboration
In the real world they won't work alone. Instead of giving individual projects give them a module to work for.
Example project: Library System
Student 1: Sign-up module
Student 2: Log-in module
Student 3: Book sorting module
Student n: x module
Output: A working system
With this approach, students will learn to work with a team and communicate properly about the project they're working for.1 -

EVERY COMPANY IS STRAIGHT UP REJECTING OR GHOSTING AFTER GIVING A TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENT.
I am just tired of this at this point. I have been unemployed for over two months now. I have been constantly applying to every opportunity that I see within my limits. I've also reduced my salary expectations by significant margins.
I'd have understood if I was getting rejected after the initial screening / technical interview. But I am not even getting there.19 -
My biggest challenge was trying to convince my old boss why things need to be done the way I'm saying and not the way he wants (of course, arch wise and not business wise)
After giving up, I ended up going back to collage, studying Masters in Business Administration just to know how managers think, took me two years, and now I'm in my final semester, even though I left my old job, I am now able to handle things in a better way in my current one regardless if I was arguing with general manager, or project manager, luckily clients are not allowed anywhere near me ... -
I was rejected by the company that I had already made plans to work for, all of it was perfect, but I just got rejected based on a video response question basis. At this point I'm down so much that I want to leave the field. I feel like I'm giving up way to easily and especially since it's only a start to my career but I just don't know if I am good enough anymore, the hesitation to write code has set in and I don't know where to go anymore... where or how do you guys get your inspiration?3

My friend started giving me advice without me even asking. She didn't listen why I chose to do something but kept on saying it's a wrong decision and why I will regret.
I asked to some people in my network and they agreed with me.
During the conversation with my friend, I felt very furious ans once tried to stop her calmly but she didn't listen, in the end I hung up by saying that I'll talk to her later and ended the conversation without getting into shitty conversation.8 -
@dfox I saw a few posts lately, about websites that people did. So besides the collabs, I'd like to suggest a new section. "DevReviews" or what ever. The basical idea is, every one, that is signed up gets one "token" devRant ++ suporters maybee an additional free token every months or whatever.
If you wan't your website reviewed, you can post it there and people reviewing it will get such a token for their review.
To ensure a certain quality of the reviews, I'd put a minimum caracter length and a "dispute" function, where the review is taken to a community voting, if the person giving the review should get the token, or if the review should be dismissed. Additional "tokens" for additional/more reviews can be bought through the app, that could help a lot of devs get quality reviews and testing and earn you some $ for the servers.5 -

My manager asked me why would our server would get overloaded, after analysing the issue and giving him a technical analysis over the last N weeks.
So I used an analogy:
Imagine an empty tank. The water coming in comes through a giant hose where the output is like a tiny tap.
Then just now I was thinking how to explain the Node event loop... And thought of this analogy:
Imagine fireball Mario running around in a circular track throwing fireballs to the side as he runs.
Maybe not entirely true but got made me chuckle...
Does anyone else come up with these sorts of analogies to explain programming problems to "nonprogrammers"?8 -
i started a project a couple months ago and i used ORM for the queries, cause it's already implemented. thing is, this project came directly from hell and the math is stupid af. it requires subqueries in subqueries and the data that was provided is trash. I'm giving up on the ORM, it's not scalable.
-
kinda sick of my friends giving me super basic advice when I mention my mess of 3d printer files
'group similar things together'
'have folders for main projects with nested sub projects'
'put the slicer project file with the stl files for the specific model'
I'm not fucking 5 I've lived long enough to have some level of basic common sense.
Worst part is they forget we've had this conversation and next time I even mention my files they bring up the exact same fucking comments EVERY damn time8 -
Rant...ish? It's more mixed feelings...
Had my first day yesterday at a new job in a big company. I came dressed really nicely in a suit and tie. Went to orientation with everyone new coming in.
Felt like I made the right choice to up my effort in dress code.
Met with my manager, was led to my team. Everyone is dressed casually. Unshaved. Giving me hate stares.
Felt out of place. But kind of happy that I can try less.
Still. What's up with programmers and being toxic to people dressed nicely o.0 I don't need to look like I came out of crunch time every single day to prove my worth...
It's really weird getting these looks. It's almost like highschool all over again. When I let my mother dress me and looked like the nerdiest kid on the block...
Then again, today I'm wearing sneakers and causal clothes. I either feel like I cave in to peer pressure... But at the same time I don't mind it. Erghhh... Still hate this...
Mixed feelings... I donno.4 -
One of the things that I like the most regarding Clojure(and most Lisps to be honest) is how "not for beginners" the ecosystem feels.
Don't get me wrong, setting up a project in lein with dependencies(both internal and external) is a cakewalk, installing lein or boot is a cakewalk. Setting environment consts and middleware etc etc is a cakewalk.
Its just that there are no blogs about convoluted and amateurish ways of doing things. Most presentations and articles are written by really experienced and talented individuals.
I dunno, its just a nice shift in community. Its nice to see people not fucking up Object Oriented programming in java or any of the other oop languages. Its nice not seeing people giving horrible advice regarding memory management in C or c++ and it is sure as shit nice to not see spaghetti php und js code.
And my productivity levels are off the charts man. Really liking this shit and I get to stay inside my JVM -
Looked up at the clock... 2 AM... Thought about giving up and going to sleep, but something kept me there...
Rewrote my encoder and decoder for my steganography program, which are used to insert and retrieve data respectively from images. Compiled, ran, and output was as expected!
Tried to write actual data, instead of just headers, to the image, and it broke... Of course it wouldn't work first try, it's me writing the code after all.
But then, after debugging for a while and changing a couple lines, the encoder looked like it had done its work properly. Then I decoded it, and voila, data completely recovered! It almost felt too magical to be true, usually I have to modify a lot more to get it working.
So now I'm in bed, after literally decimating the memory usage of the program, amongst other optimizations, and I know that the code works perfectly 😎 best part is I refactored each class down to 100 lines each, so now it's clean and dense 😇
Just had to share, feeling so good right now 😄2 -

It has now become trend for all new startups in my country to follow these three steps.
Step 1 - Attract developers by showing them high CTC.
Step 2 - Make them work mercilessly on intern basis giving them low pay.
Step 3 - Fire them after intern period without giving some valid reasons.
I am fed up now as I have wasted my six months without getting much pay and now I am jobless 😨5 -
Nope,
Far too in love with myself to have any sort of insecurities.
Not that there is anything wrong with having them, we are all different. I just believe that insecurities come from giving other people far too much power over ourselves. And I just couldn't care less what people say about me, as long as it IS about me. See?
The more confidence you project the more attention you will get, be it good or bad, it doesn't matter since it is the only way to go up in your workplace. Having a personality besides "ZOmG cOde Is LiFE" really goes a long way also.
So yall cheer the fuck up, its just code.7 -
Hey fellas,
So, our company is taking up some consulting projects to survive this pandemic since our main business is a little down. I've been assigned to a RN project and the client company has 2 other devs. Those devs are so incompetent that they don't even know the basics of JS and RN. They don't even understand how to split code into components and make it resusable. Okay, fine they must be new devs. I get it but can't you even fucking follow the instructions and guidelines that I'm giving you!! The code is very bad with a lot of pitfalls. In the first 2 weeks I reviewed all the code they were writing and gave comments for improvements. They didn't even care to do that! Now I've given up!
Every single day looking at the codebase makes me sick and not want to touch anything. I've practically started hating the project. How do I deal with this situation? Now, we are reaching the deadline and they're piling up the work on me. Any suggestions on how to handle this?
Thanks!
P.S: This is my first actual rant!6 -
So i work in support (do dev stuff in my own time). Spent 3 months seconded to another team supporting in project clients.
First issue i had in that team was a client with serious data issues which took about 30 hours +/- to diagnose and write some scripts to resolve.
After they went live and got handed over to support they had the same issue again but instead of support picking it up they sat on it till i came back on Monday.
Ive spent about another 10 hours or so picking through audit logs. I get all the shit no one else can either be bothered or capable of doing and to top it off i didnt get the promotion i was going for because i hadnt closed enough tickets, because they keep giving me all the shit to fix for everybody else -

Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.

I started building an application for FIDAL (Italian Federation of Athletics) because why not: I was bored and wanted to learn Flutter.
There is no API, but I didn't even expect it. Parsing the HTML is easy enough.
BUT OH MY GOD THE ENTIRE WEBSITE IS SHIT. Take this page: http://www.fidal.it/graduatorie.php, it uses some useless jQuery plugin and uses a buttload of JavaScript that isn't even needed. BUT WAIT. Try entering an invalid "club code" (http://fidal.it/graduatorie.php/...), a FUCKING white page with 200, are you kidding?
I'd also like to mention that all pages that require form input won't load correctly if you don't include "submit=Invia" in the URL.
I am not giving up.3 -
I legit had this dream early morning today.
A bunch of kids (grade 10ish) were stuck somewhere and helicopters had been sent in for rescue. Strings were thrown down to airlift 'em and just like that, one kid was being pulled up. Everyone was horrified to see that the strings were giving way for just this kid while the others were being pulled up easily. The rescue team attempted the act multiple times but no go.
After all the hullabaloo it turned out that the pen-drive in his pocket had a node_modules folder. Deleting it made him lighter and that saved his life omg. :') -
I feel a whole lot better. The project that I was so incredibly stressed out over has finally been invoiced for, albeit two months late, and my client has been understanding throughout the process. I now realise that although pressure is great for working to a deadline, too much pressure is heavily impacting on my thought processes and extends my deadlines more than I can manage at the moment.
The words of encouragement in the comments on my last "rant" really spurred me on, and the criticism made me reflect very much on how little squeeze time I'd given myself. I'm very grateful to this community for those inciteful fragments, and I promise to do my bet to take all of them on board.
Thank you devrant community, for giving me a leg up when I needed it. -
What's up with giving away +1's for anything and everything? I thought this was a place for cranky developers. I expected developers over here to be mean and bullies.6

I hate the process of trying to get hydrated when I’ve gone through a period of apparently thinking I’m a cactus.
When I don’t drink water at all, I feel fine. No dry mouth, no symptoms of dehydration.
I *start* trying to hydrate and it’s like my body thinks this is the best time to start giving me all those dehydration symptoms it doesn’t even bother with when I’m not drinking water because it’s just given up on me listening to them.
I drank 64 oz of water yesterday and woke up with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth and my throat scratchy.
I know that I need to keep drinking water in large quantities for a period of time for my body to chill the fuck out again, but words can’t describe how tempting it is to just go back to being a cactus.
Hydrating sucks.8 -
Recently I've been working on an ERP in logistics, and I was doing it solo. Gotta say that it's a big mistake to take this up alone, and architected the whole system based on the flexibility of scale. It took me more than 7 months to bang enough walls to realize that tech work is not what it used to be.
As of now there are a slew of meetings that I need to go to. It pretty much felt like the client was trying to find faults in my work.
Software timeline estimation becomes irrelevant, and work still needs to continue on anyways. At this point, I really do feel like giving up and just be a product manager instead. What say you?1 -
After giving up on multiple attempts to contribute to opensource projects, came to know about 'yourfirstpr' on one of the comments here.
Long story short, a week later and I've made my first pull request to libgit which has been merged :)

A**hole of a "Technical" Delivery Manager, who has changed orgs after at-most every 14 months, and says she can't read code or even understand technical things like Kafka.
It's been 12 months she's joined here, I bet she's again gonna jump to somewhere. Why the hell do they give these roles if there's no relevance.
Only thing she knows is to blame/assign anything to anyone without giving a f**king read.
Any random thread, she'd just ++ and say, ensure this is done on priority. There are 7 priorities already assigned, atleast reply when I ask you on mail to arrange your priorities in order so that you won't say we messed up. We've no issues ticking one thing at a time from the top.

Have a friend who wants to enrich his coding portfolio but is scared of people copying his more serious code if he puts it up on github.
Told him it's all about open source and he could just keep the more casual code up there while giving access to serious projects on request from a company, but it's not very ideal, is it?
What would you tell him?7 -
An arrogant and rich girl called "Microsoft" daughter of billionaire Bill Gates finally cut her arrogance and confessed her love to that guy "Linux" who were always at a small corner while everybody is giving him stairs of negligence and fear at the same time because he was spacial, thanks to his loyal friends and family he grows up to be a hell of a boy, sexy, stylish, very attractive and yet very strong to a point "Microsoft" couldn't resist anymore and shout out her love in public, will Microsoft and Linux get along and live happily? or the differences in point of views will shatter them apart again?..... to be continued8

More network/hardware than dev but anyway: I use OPNsense as a firewall at home on an embedded system. Had everything set up nicely and appearing to be working fine, quite a lot of things set up (static leases, VLANs with various firewall rules etc. - a fair bit of stuff involved). I noticed my remote system was failing to back up to my local one. Turned out port forwarding wasn't fully working (initial packet got through but nothing else). I noticed this at midnight.
Ran an update to see if that helped - nope. Reboot time then! It made its shutdown noises and I waited 15 minutes before giving up (no noises, no ping response). Took SD card out. Copied a fresh install onto it, thus wiping all settings. Booted up fine, set up my internet connection, all good. Proceeded to configure it. Noticed I couldn't access the internet from my PC, but could from the firewall itself. Rebooted the firewall. It didn't come back up. Argh!
Reinstalled AGAIN. Attached a serial cable and it was complaining about something which sounded like it couldn't read the SD card. Tried another. Nope. Looked online (using phone): known issue to do with boot delays.
Gave up and went to bed at this point (4am).
Next day: Installed it in a VM instead. Still no internet from my PC! Another known issue to do with default gateway not being the PPPoE interface. Got into shell, manually changed the default route. Was then able to update to the latest version which fixes the gateway issue. Rebooted the VM. All good.
Put all my settings back in, this time taking a backup afterward.
Only to discover....
....port forwarding wasn't working properly. Back to square 1.
Poked around with some NAT settings (outbound ones), made no difference, undid those changes and suddenly it started working.
WTF? /waves arms in the air
OPNsense folk were very helpful, producing a new build for me to try within a couple of hours of me asking about the problem.
But days like that, I start to question whether I really enjoy technology as much as I thought I did... -
After falling down the Manjaro hole for months I yesterday decided to leave Manjaro for Pop!_OS. I lose a bit of performance and battery life, I gain a ton of UI polish, I gain a lot of package support, and I lose some hard earned nerd points.
My NAS has an easy to install Debian tool for file sync. I can use Etcher for making bootable USB/SD for my raspberry pi. Firefox is the default browser and I can use all my plugins and password manager out of the box. Apt is easier to use than pacman. Easier Python development setup. Docs are more often written for Debian. (For some reason I spent hours trying to get powerline and oh-my-zsh working right in manjaro’s xfce terminal before giving up.) -
been fighting with nginx and php-fpm becuase the dev makes php scripts that run longer than 1 minutes even the connection between nginx and the php socks is giving up on life.2

Decided to change how my game engine asset loading and sorting systems work, giving up on making everything editable JSON files just so it's easier to manage and actually build things.
Currently trying to work out a way to load all of the packages sprites into 1 singular asset bundle and here is the evolution so far...
Revision 1: Compiles a single 328KB PNG into a 24MB file in 190 seconds.
Revision 2: Compiles same image into a 24MB file in 5 seconds.
Revision 3: Compiles into a 16MB image in 4 seconds.
It's not much but it's a start :-D
(Still haven't built a loading system so who knows if it works yet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)3 -

was working on a project once where we needed a database mapping to some c# code
tasked one of our less experienced guys on it to maybe give him some experience
now I'm assuming most people here who have worked in .NET for a reasonable amount of time know about entity framework, and I did tell the guy about it.
three days after giving him that task he comes up to me smiling and says he's done
great! what did he do? he wrote the database mapping from scratch using hard coded SQL queries using lists to chain queries together in a sea of if-else statements...
let's just say the code broke down and needed last minute fixing when it was time to present it2 -
Back home from vacations tomorrow.
It wasn't the best time I had but the thought of returning to daily life is already giving me a stomach ache.
Gotta take care of my little pug too, my anxiety about his partial eye keratosis isn't doing great too. Since the caretakers don't apply eye medication regularly.
There's this fear of my productivity before uni begins, I really don't want my vacation to end with me returning without completing my application.
I've still got a lot to do, anyone want to partner up with me ? I've still got load balancing and failover mechanisms which I have no real-time experience with (excluding api related stuff). I've got a general idea to use nginx. -
Fuck Apple and their shitty macbooks
the MacBook air I bought a year ago as that was the only I could afford at that point is slowly giving up as this piece of shit lacks any sort of cooling. As soon as Xcode starts , temperatures reach 80-90C and don't even get me started on what happens when I provide builds.
Seriously, how do they get away with providing subpar hardware at such high prices. Their after sale services will literally cost me another MacBook. This "ecosystem" is just not worth it.12 -
Okay, let's admit this, being a programmer, I never heard of devRant. The thing that made me join this platform was that it was giving away some free goodies, please don't hate me xD. I thought this would be like any other meme sharing platform where all nonsense is talked. But boy, how wrong I was. I ended up, using this application all the time. The people here, they are just amazing, I learned a lot here.
But the irony is, that I never received free goodies xD.5 -
Maybe I'm not cut out to program. I have yet to write an entire program start to finish outside of tut sites and still have little idea as to what I'm doing.11

A recruiter set me up with an interview for a company I really liked and I thought it went pretty well. But I tried following up with him and he refuses to answer my 3 emails or pick up my calls. It's fine if I didn't get the job but this is the first time a recruiter just completely ignores me without giving me any feedback. Has this even happened to anyone and how do I deal with this?5

Every time I try and write C++ code, I end up getting annoyed with my approach and trying several different ways to structure my code before giving up and reverting to writing the exact logic I need in C.
It is most likely due to lack of experience with writing C++ programs, and one day I'm sure I will finally work out how to apply the right patterns at the right time and find it quicker and easier to write good code. But for now, I use C since it is very easy to bend into whatever shape I desire.4 -
I really regret switching to manjaro. So many things keep breaking, like my laptop won't sleep anymore, it stays up, whenever I plug in another display I get an error thrown at me. Among other weird behaviors (all screen related) that I can't seem to fix and make the experience feel like I'm running a very clunky win-poop machine.
On the other hand, setting up a very custom sddm theme and installing certain software like hadoop, rust, gimp, xfce tweaks and other things was such a breeze D: just "yay hadoop" and 90% of the work was done.
Grhhh... Wondering if I should accept defeat, and maybe switch to Linux MX or spend hours fixing what probably is a display driver issue that's pissing me off 😠2 -
why am I feeling so guilty about this? should I be feeling guilty about this?
PS : this is not a support request. I genuinely feel bad about writing that piece of code and sense something is wrong somewhere, but I cannot figure out what. I stared at the screen for quite a while before giving up.
maybe it might reveal itself to me when I continue staring at it tomorrow.12 -
Friend: "Heyyy, I want a custom IT solution. Can you make it for me?"
Me: "Okay sure."
Friend: "Heyyy I don't want the program to do it for me, I want to learn it myself."
Me: "What the fuck.. sigh."
I ended up giving them some third-party boilerplate solution and now they're happy. Peasants..1 -
No wonder it’s hard to hire devs with even a basic level of competency or some kind of promise that them might be able to learn shit given time, opportunity and guidance. The sheer amount of idiocy and stupidity and straight up incompetent cringe I witness on every platform giving us devs a voice (yes, including here) is mindboggling…4

Apparently I have an account with a certain online organization though I don't remember setting it up.
So naturally I had no idea of my username or password, so they asked me challenge questions.
It asked me the city of my birth, which is a place with a weird spelling. Because of that weird spelling, I never remember if I'm spelling it right (I was only there as a newborn infant) And I'm also supposed to remember if I capitalized it or not.
I hate challenge questions. And anyone doing any remotely simple research on me shouldn't have trouble learning what city I was born in so it seems to me it's a security vulnerability, nothing more.
And maybe I'm giving things away by saying it asks me that question, but it's a common security question any hacker would anticipate anyways.3 -
I don't know if my boss just wants me to learn how to use a new internal deployment process or just likes giving me unnecessary low-value work to take up time...
I could and have just copied the program via SFTP and unzip it to set it up....
(This is a testing and does not need to be in production...)
I have better things I could be doing and just want to get this done and closed but ... -

I’m always tired all the time. Depression and what not but today I am TIRED
Had an interview that requires vanilla javascript but I suck at algos even tho I was getting it done till time ran out. We gelled tho so I hope they see potential and move to next round.
But the good news is. I had a follow up interview based on a challenge. It’s the second I’ve ever had and I did well this time.
So much so that they’re booking another interview for tomorrow.
So I’m done with the technical portions of the process.
This is the first time I’ve gotten this far and I’m so happy. I’m hoping really that this is the one cause I doubt I have the energy and will power to keep going though the processes.
I’m so excited. It’s as if all my work is slowly showing and I’m getting closer and closer
Wish me luck guys. Hopefully I ace it as I come across well In General Chats.
This is my last application. If it doesn’t work I think I’m done with dev life and job hunt.
Fingers crossed I’ve found the one1 -
Switched to LG G5 from iPhone 7 Plus.
Lg's screen has burn in and took me about 10 hours to completely fuck it up, restore it, flash crDroid(Lineage os based, the only custom rom working fine so far) and workaround the faulty wifi chip giving null mac address by faking it.
Still love my new(old) phone more than the iPhone.2 -
Fuck me. I was installing arch after giving up on manjaro not working, and after fighting to get it connected to the wifi, I forgot to plug it in and it died 30 minutes or so into pacstrap.
Goddamned idiot, that's what I fucking am. -
When you feel like giving up on it all and just going off the grid... I've been programming too long. I need a fuckin' break.1

I feel super discouraged. I just got a new job from being let go from my previous one, and I’m already thinking about quitting.
They really threw me into the weeds with a couple of complex tasks that require a lot of BE work and all I really do is FE. I’m still just trying to learn how the framework actually works. I think they expect me to become full stack. Now I find myself just starting at the computer screen most of the day because I have no fucking idea how to start working. The codebase and local environment is also fucked up super bad and barely runs on my machine.
Also, whenever I reach out these people they give the most minimal answers and have swollen egos. The frameworks they use have a really shitty community and bad documentation, so googling anything is really pointless. Working on this project, it has made me consider giving up development.
I am wondering if this is just a me thing though. Should I quit or stick with it for a bit?13 -
Was really motivated and started out with Android development.
Android studio is sick as fuck.I am struck in the second step. The only solution I can find is "try restarting your system".
Like wtf arrrgh!!
After gazillion times of restarts later. Finally, I am giving up.
Thank you google, now go f*ck yourself.9 -
What a fucking boring day.
I had a heated argument with a fellow colleague because he wants us to add a feature to a certain product for free. He thinks am so money minded as I was pressuring him to charge the feature but he's defending himself that we are just a start-up.
Am left wondering if I was wrong or if giving free stuff will pay our bills or should start-ups code some stuff for free.....4 -
Thinking of ideas is not so much about them being unique as it is about tackling them in a unique way.
The only bad idea you can have is giving up on the last. -
Well my nexus 5 showed up and got UBports installed on it.
Quite like the OS actually, yet to test it's desktop functionality but the only downside is the lack of developers, really suffers from the 'look at me! im an os too!' issue of there being almost nothing but web apps.
If you have a supported device I recommend giving it a shot, has a lot of good ideas! -
I really feel lost in the world of freelancing, I mean I literally have three jobs on the go so barely any pressure and yet I'm cocking up my time estimations and mixing up code for each site, and giving incorrect predictions for completion, so basically I keep ending up working for free. Freelancers of the depths of devRant, please help! How do you manage to maintain a work life balance? Is accurate predictions and time management just something that comes with experience?
Also huge props to you for being able to keep your mentality!12 -

Which database program do you use? MySQL, MongoDB etc.
I'm using MySQL at the moment, but a lot of jobs requires MongoDB. Does anyone know why?

After spending lots of money on a Mac mini 2014, ngrox, and other dev tools to get jenkins working for android, iOS, and node.js, I'm giving up and switching to bitbucket pipelines. I'm having a dilemma.
I currently hold a position as a Data Collector for one of the biggest tech companies around.
I have picked up a bit of programming by myself over the course of a year, hoping that I would have an opportunity to prove myself in said company for a more permanent position.
Thing is, I don't think they'll be able to take me seriously enough for a more technical position as long as I don't have a degree, which I don't.
So, I was thinking of pursuing a BSc in Computer Sciences, to increase knowledge and at the same time, increase my career prospects.
However, this means that I would have to leave the company, effectively giving up any footholds I have made there already.
Any advice?5 -
"Ughh, you're such a lazy person. Why don't you finish it instead of making me do everything afger I asked YOU to do it"
I am so fucking done playing family technicman for you. I copied all of your data from your old phone to yojr new one. I set up everything except personal accounts because I respect privacy. You only need to insert your damm sim card.
And don't you even try giving me that "I tried but could not do it, it's just to complicated"
I could buy the same phone, throw it at you and pay the lawyer if I would get one cent for each time you said that.1 -
Do you ever have a problem that you just don't know how to resolve, you are way out of your depth and it seems like there really is no solution. There is nobody you can ask for help. You want to just give up. Then finally you have an answer. You fix the issue and it feels like you are superman and you can do anything. I remember that feeling before but this time I think maybe I should start looking for another job.1

Hey y'all. So my manager is giving me "permission" to do coding related activities. I'm part of support, so it's a privilege to be going out of scope of my work.
But I gotta ask, is it me or is 3 hours everyday for large scaled coding project a bit short?
I feel like 3 hours is not enough time to ramp up and then do productive work. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I am being setup for failure.4 -
I'm supporting my language learning with an app that puts users in touch with other users who are fluent in the language you want to learn. You specify the language, and also your current ability on a scale of 1-5.
Does anything like this exist for programming? Like a small scale site with mentoring, something to support people who are learning a particular programming language. I've been thinking that I don't know of any really supportive site where beginners can talk to and learn from expert coders.
If it doesn't exist, is it something that would work and be worth setting up? I really like the idea of helping more people learn coding and giving them someone to turn to when they get stuck or need some encouragement, or even just some positive feedback on their work.10 -
For me, it was when I was on a team doing government work. We had an entire team devoted to deployments etc which were handled via ansible.
Ansible was fairly new at the time (~2015, they had just been bought by RedHat) but the team was definitely doing a great job picking it up and creating install playbooks for _every_ piece of our distributed infrastructure (load balancers, application servers, queues, databases, everything).
I luckily left before stuff got too hairy, but last I heard they are more than 6 months behind schedule. They STILL can't get a reproducible install process with the ansible playbooks! And it's all due to tech debt ie not giving any time to fix things, so its just band aid after band aid.
It's really sad to hear because the sytem itself was pretty cool, completely horizontally scalable and definitely miles ahead of the program they've been using for the last 20 years. -
A prime example of bad UX from the guys at Ubisoft.
They have this 30-day giveaway up to Christmas and it's terrible.
1. They are giving away posters and shit wallpapers in the lowest resolutions, like really, how long would it have taken to export that shit in 4K? Also, that is a cheap as fuck move. You are Ubisoft, give away some games, for fucks sake! Not shit posters in a resolution so low that I can't use it for wallpaper or print it.
2. When you enter the site you don't have a fucking login button! You have to guess that you have to click a number and then it prompts you to login. Also, why the fuck can't you sustain my login from yestersay?
I anyone wants to see this mess it's over at https://30days.ubi.com1 -
I am the nightmare of the recruiters. They're reaching out to me and I am giving them back every experience I received while I was a junior.
I'm arrogant, not responding, gaslighting, shaming, slow responding, sometimes I build up hope for them and just stop communicating with them.
I am a bit sorry but at the same time it feels extremely satisfying and I feel revenge.6 -

After 4 years of computer science courses, lots of books, and hours googling, I was able to create instructions for my personal gadgets and my clients' machines.1

Having a look at electron again after giving up on it months ago.
I must say, the documentation has improved a lot since then, and it looks---dare I say---intuitive to use?
The electron api demos app is surely some help, but I'm not really all that sure how much it lives up to its name. It doesn't really demonstrate anything, and it doesn't cover the whole api, just small chunks of it.
Loving the event system though!12 -

I had a fun experience today.
Updated my system, got plenty of unsuspecting dpkg errors. Couldn't figure out how to solve them (all relating to something python-*). Next issue was Firefox, which wouldn't even start.
Uninstall, reinstall.
And it won't even start up without immediately giving me some XML error related to... chrome? Whatever.
Start it from the terminal, mostly to see if it gives me the error in more detail. Ublock Origin does not like when Firefox gets reinstalled apparently. Spend more time than I'd like to admit getting a Firefox to start in safe mode with all extensions disabled. Apparently it's 'firefox -safe-mode' (yes I didn't try the obvious because I wasn't thinking). Uninstall all my extensions then Install them again, problem solved.
Now to solve those damn dpkg errors...1 -
There are billionaires/millionaires who get asked almost the same question -> "What would you advise for a beginner?" and they usually say some BS answer like -> "Wake up early. Read books. Workout" etc. And they get clowned on for giving out "generic" advices.
But I think, they do it on purpose. Like, think about it. If I make a billion dollars tomorrow, (somehow), why would I lay out step by step to you, on how I did it? Why would I increase competition for myself by giving you "real" advice?
So they will never reveal what they did to get where they are, whether it is joining an elite cult, selling their soul to the devil or just keeping the business active. We will only get generic advices because it's an easy cop-out.3 -
How hard can it be to let sql just multiply some values and sum the results, right? As it turns out, damn hard!
I hear you thinking, surely you can just do select SUM(price*amount) AS total right? Nope! I mean, yes you can, but it fucks up. Oddly. It always ends up giving me wrong results. Always. Wtf sql? And it's not like I'm running a massive dataset or anything, it's like 100 records at most?27 -

The fucking nail to my coffin. This thing is so unreliable. I fixed on issue get the next one. Then get an error trying to make a http request, with little information on the web. Eventually switch to FTP which is working for a while. Then suddenly nothing is working properly. Even the serial communication has errors. This process took over 6 months. Constant debugging and headscraching involved. After hundreds of hours I give up. I'm going to switch to a Raspberry Pi Zero with an UMTS Stick attached. This is going to cost way more battery time but my project needs to be finished by july and I'm tired of this shitty little module.2 -
That shitty moment when you are finally about to release your code, after about one month of developing and testing, and making sure everything is OK, imagining: "Oh we're finally releasing this feature, I have worked so hard on it, it's going to kick some ass!" but surprisingly things get fucked up on production server... I mean seriously? Stupid middleware I killed myself to get to work messed up. Where the hell have you been in staging, you stupid little bug? You happy now? My CTO giving me awkward looks and shit like: "I'm sorry but you have to come fix it, during weekend." The best way to fuck up my mood, today is the last day of week for god's sake!
I hate releasing like this. seriously SAG in this release!1 -
It normally starts with installing a new framework, either via composer or npm, then several hours of reading documentation, before giving up for the day. I think to myself I'll pick that up again later...
The good thing is I always learn something from it I can use in other projects. -
funny how linkedin lunatics compare "not taking job due to multiple offers" to "not giving a job after giving a job offer"
this may seem similar, but on one side there's a company, with running operations and having multiple employees to take up on the work load of the leaving employee. even if some guy backed out on an offer, they still have employees and can continue their search.
but on other side their is an employee serving 60-90 days notice period. he/she have put a notice period due to a job guarantee and is out of livelihood if offer is rescinded2 -
How do you find the balance between just howing the junior how it's done (or end up doing it yourself) and giving them hints so they can figure it out on their own?
Not trying to be an ass, on the contrary, I just want to help.
But it's frustrating as fuck seeing all the little, simple stuff going wrong over and over and I end up just giving in and take time off my assignments to "help out" (point out the error/give the solution).5 -

Since when was having 3 spinner styles and 2 pop ups styles a good idea in a SaaS? This baby needs a proper spruce up. I must admit it's not really a rant, I enjoy it, decrapifying the code and general refactoring. This is from a hackathon a good couple of years ago. Finally giving it some TLC. Feels amazing.

After delaying it for a few months, i'm finally starting to work on my final college project. It's going to be done in Java and Mongo. I'm not sure about the web part of the project, because i've never done anything in that part besides basic html and css. I'll probably try JavaScript.
Just wanted to share this because i've made the hardest step - actually started working on it.

Am I the only one who isn't really that bothered by Mozilla's mistake with Firefox and that Mr robot thing?
They made a big fuck-up, yes, but do you think they'll do it again? I don't.

My thoughts on how progression goes from top to bottom:
I'm going to use the terms all wrong because I don't know correct terminology but this is just how I make sense of a good workflow in programming.
From top to bottom:
Hard coding
Variablizing (is this a word? I use it to myself)
Functionizing
Abstracting the function
Adding an interface to the abstracted function (another layer of abstraction saves so much effort later)
Testing each step if possible.
Then when I feel a bit of code is good, giving it some more time and more testing then finding bugs I didn't see before and improving things.
If I get tripped up and spend too much time on some issue, I'll just let it sit for a little bit and take a walk or think of something else. The problem is still being worked on subconsciously and when I return after a rest usually is more apparent.
Testing, testing, testing and more testing!1 -

I just came across this strategy for the rate us section to avoid the lower ratings on the store.
When you click on rate us. It initially presents you with a 5 star with none filled up.
If you click on stars 1 to 3 then a feedback box pops up asking why I'm giving them less stars. Still letting to change them to 5 stars.
If I click on 4 or 5 stars then the app directly takes you to the play store listing where I need to press the 5 star again.
What do you think about this strategy?. Is it worth implementing??3 -
Security theater is not security.
I am still on my mother's cell plan. I pay for it, but she is the primary account holder. We are grandfathered into unlimited no restrictions data, and a new phone yearly, so yeah, not giving that up.
Anyway, when i go to the store to manage the account they say, 'sorry, Sarah needs to come in as the primary account holder.'
'I am sarah' I tell them. I am lying, they know I am lying, and they know I know.
But they have no choice but to go along. I even asked once; they are not allowed to ask for proof of id. I don't know why.
It's just security theater.1 -

I think i came up with the ultimate captcha. A gif that displays four numbers, one by one in current position. There's always one number displayed. I do not think that AI can recognize it without some nasty adjustments while it's very clear for humans. A while ago I had to do a captcha with six questions and failed it a few times. Wtf.
The site I'm working on will have this captcha soon. I make a microservice in C that will create a captcha equal to the last url parameter, the four digit number. By giving the number yourself as parameter you know what to validate with later at post. I probably include the answer hashed with some salt in a hidden field to compare answer with so it works if you have two tabs open20 -
Had a hell of a week trying to convince a client that "Case Sensitivity" is a real thing in programming languages.
So there was some typo in some third party code which client had provided which was not giving the accurate results, but the client was not ready to listen. I asked him to get the variable rectified from the 3rd party from
var1 to Var1
But he somehow had a notion in the back of his mind that the 3rd party could never ever be wrong and it was surely I who had screwed up the code and he won't even bother the other team.
He was all like "I don't understand anything remotely connected with coding, but do explain me why is this not working ?" (His exact words)
Me (thinking): umm, WTF !!!
After to and fro for the whole damn week, finally able to convince him ( I guess, still doubtful) after giving the video and link of a jsfiddle showing him all the freaking magic of caseSensitivity! -

I just helped my friend setting up Laravel on her machine. The npm is giving me headache because of the fucking permission issue. WHY THE FUCK chmod DOESN'T WORK ON WINDOWS IF POWERSHELL RECOGNIZE THE COMMAND?? Then composer says that it cannot find the autoload.php. I thought it was another permission issue end up it's because composer fuck up installing on Windows. Wasted 2 hours for this shit.
Oh and the default language she uses is French. The keyboard layout is entirely different. French is totally awesome but the typos in command is getting really annoying. :(
I'm not saying Windows is bad for general use but I think it's a bad idea for developing non-Microsoft product on Windows. I don't understand how can one bear with so much shit on Windows. Most dev tools tutorials are written in Unix system so fucking get a Mac or Linux at least!2 -

@dfox curious about the decision making process behind what happens when you +1 something you've already -1'd and vice versa. Currently it jumps up two points instead of going to 0 and then giving you the opportunity to vote again if you wanted.

I wanted to design an operating system when I was younger after giving up on the idea of being a video game designer. While researching that I learned I need to know how to program. I tried too learn solo with websites like Codecademy. I completed several tracks on the site. After getting the basics down, I took two Java programming classes. After that opportunities to write code for free kept popping up and I kept saying "yes". Fast forward a few years and I'm working as a programmer. She also asked me to click a picture of the coupon and send it to her when I buy it as a proof that I'm genuinely interested in renting the place and her trip (she claims to live in another city) will not be in vain. Looks clean but my instincts are screaming that this is a scam. But the only scenario I can think of is them beating me up and stealing the coupons from me instead of giving me the agreement and keys. If it is a scam, I really want to know how they plan to execute it.8 -
How does your organisation and team balance PR comments demanding changes and dev time?
Here, while fixing PR comments we sometimes end up wasting as much time as we took in actually developing the feature... As a result, almost every major user story overshoots the estimation and almost every sprint gets delayed.
Yes, to each his own; but talking in general, why do you think this time wasting happens?
Do you think that happens because some of us are not as experienced as the others, the existing code not being up to the mark giving a bad example, or just a skewed review process?2 -
How do you plan your personal projects?
I have a couple of ideas rattling around inside my head, and I know if I just sit down and start typing away something will happen but it'll be crap and I'll end up starting over numerous times before giving up.
But if I try and plan then I end up procrastinating, then other things like work, family, and distance learning degree eat up what little time I have available6 -
FFS what is the standard with dependency injection with Android. Is it dagger2 or kodein. Last 2 days googling about and it seems like it's dagger2 yet others say it's kodein. Kodein is newer I guess so less written about it. Seems like every 2 weeks it's something new. No wonder I can't pick this up. It changes faster than Trump can fricken tweet.
Like first mvc then mvp then mvvm then mvi what's next mve? 😵
So flustered. As last post I feel like giving up. Every time you try to learn some new "standard" creeps out from CS major ass crack. Is it the same for IOS. Maybe I should sell a kidney for a Mac book.1 -
We got this feature on our app where if you change the status of an action item, it moves down/up to join its brethren of the same status at the bottom of its respective grouping. This is also true for creation.
Problem is: Testing.
I embarked upon this fuckin ridonkulousness today where I had to test all possible scenarios. Empty list, list with only A status, list with only B, list with A and B, list with A and C, etc etc
9 fucking hours later and a lot of anger, I am finally done. I powered back probably 10 club sodas, 6 teas, and had chillstep rollin all day.
If y'all ever feel like giving up because shit's hard, keep pushin. You'll get it eventually ;)1 -
Back in 2014, I was developing a personal web page and I decided to add something called flip card on the page (it flips horizontally when hovered)
https://w3schools.com/howto/...
It worked but was not feeling very "natural". I mean the flip thing was not giving "that" feeling. So I ended up a fine summer evening tweaking shadow, speed, z-axis, etc. And then the next day I deleted the whole project because it was taking a lot of my time. Mood swings. Moved on to Machine Learning and never touched CSS stuff again. Was a lot of fun though. -
I just realized being alive in this life is actually a punishment. Who enjoys this life if they are not rich? Wtf.
I have to spend thousands of dollars for my dogs treatment because hes sick. Those greedy vets are fucking disgusting. I dont have energy to talk about how money hungry they are and not actually helping.
Literally giving away my last dollars to help my dog. These doctors don't give a Fuck if hes gonna survive they are here just to milk as much money as they can from me. Im fuckijg sick of this life and world. I didnt sign up for this struggle.5 -
Any good free HTML5-CSS3 visualization tool for Java Swing?
I did my research and gave up (tried 3, 1 was paid and 2 didn't work) ended up using JFreeChart, but the Grid Bag Layout is giving me some headaches, if you have any idea, you're welcome.1 -
I don't know much about how search engines works and all that stuffs. I started a Blogspot and tried the Google Console to index my web on Google. But it sucks. I get redirect errors. "Crawled- but not indexed.", "Discovered not crawled". I don't know shit. And every video is just a crap on YouTube. I tried several methods and sometimes I feel like giving up.6

Yesterday I spent an hour fiddling in network settings trying to figure out why my laptop was not connecting to WiFi.
Giving up on it I started walking away from laptop only to realise the main WiFi adapter was switched off the whole damn time🙈
Moral of the story: Not every issue is a software problem -

I'm not a fan of reinventing the wheel but I have this new found motivation to learn everything related to tech , science and math from scratch. I'm talking new models and so on . It's probably not going to work like most of my other ideas but it's worth giving it a shot . For now I guess I will setup a new YouTube channel or something and log the progress and the development .
That said I'm not sure where i should start first but I do know I want to cover everything from programming and quantum scripting to rocket science . Work our way up slowly ofcourse ...
