Client: "This has been broken for weeks! Why is it still broken!?!?"
Me: "Did you tell anyone it was broken?"
Client: "Well...um...no..."
I may be good at my job, but I have not been able to (nor do I want to) develop mind-reading abilities. Now please fuck off (so that I can go fix it).7 -
Manager: You really shouldn’t be doing that
Dev: It’s in my job description
Manager: Yeah but you still shouldn’t be doing it.
Dev: Who should I hand it off to?
Manager: We don’t have anyone else to hand off that task to.
Dev: Ok, do I stop doing it?
Manager: 😡 Of course not, it needs to get done! I’m just saying you shouldn’t do it.
Dev: ???????????13 -
Fuck MatLab. Fuck Mathworks. Why the fuck do I still have this fucking piece of shit on my computer? Even its logo makes me want to puke.
You think JavaScript is bad? Try MatLab, JavaScript will look like a saint.
You are still virgin? Try MatLab, it will fuck you hard.
Give me one fucking engineer who has to use MatLab and love its nonsense, I dare you!31 -
Friend(non dev): Hey. Do you know how much it costs to maintain an app?
Me : Well that depends. What are you planning to do?
Friend: Something like Trivago. But small.
Me: That still doesn't tell me anything
Friend: Come on. Just give a number. How hard can it be?
Me: 42. *facepalm*
Friend: See wasn't that hard. Was it?
Me: *thinking* Don't correct him. Just let him be.19 -
One of our CEO: “we dont have the internet speed that we have paid for - I will check it out”
Developers: “please dont, remember last time?”
CEO: “the net will only be down for a couples of minuts”
Developers: “please dont touch anything, and do it after hours”
1 hour later we still dont have the internet restored.
FML!6 -
I had to explain to a customer's head of IT what a public IP is! He is (still) convinced all addresses in the world have to start with 192.168...
How do people like this get/keep their jobs?!9 -
Your app works.
You do some changes.
It doesn't work anymore...
You restore the old code.
It still doesn't work... WHY?4 -
Throughout the day I check Google analytics, I do it so much that I have a habit of typing "anal" and hitting enter into chrome and it auto completes,
I accidentally typed it not realising I still had focus on my company Slack chat window. The delete message feature is disabled 😰.7 -
tl;dr stupid clients with their stupid requirements.
Client: (on Monday) hypothetically could you implement "A"?
Me: (on Monday) yeah I could do that by Friday, let me know if you want me to start it.
Client: (on Thursday) hey remember we talked about "A" well do "B" instead and I'll need it by Friday still.
Me: "B" is completely different than "A" and will take probably twice as long.
Client: but you told me you could do it by Friday.
Me: ............ I want to smash your face.4 -
On my annoying radar today - devs who learn one language and then *insist* on using it for everything, even when it makes absolutely zero sense.
"Ooh I'd like to do some microcontroller development. But I only know Java. How do you run Java on a microcontroller?"
"...You don't."
"...but I heard a talk where someone did it. Look, there's this microjava page. How do I use it?"
"It's an interesting technical demo, but that's it. Dude, just learn C. It's not hard, Java has C style syntax anyway and this way you can...."
"...but I only want to use modern programming languages. C is irrelevant these days, it's pointless me learning it."
"It's definitely still relevant if you want to program a microcontroller."
"...but I want to do that in Java."

QA: Please Look at this Defect.
Me: Okay not a problem!
QA: Thanks
Me: <Starts to look at Defect>
QA: 2 mins later. Do you have an ETA on when it will be fixed?
Me: Not yet, I'm still looking at it.
QA: Do you know what time it can be fixed? I have a deadline.
Me: I don't know what's wrong yet, I can't tell you when it will be fixed if I don't know what's wrong.
QA: Okay. Update Me.
Me: Opens Dev Rant.5 -
Designer: Can you hide scrollbar and still make web scrollable?
I: Sure.
Designer: Ok fine, i'll do that in next design.
I: Wait, how users will know the web has more content?
Designer: I'll put the mouse icon on the bottom.
I: It is not good idea. People can overlook it.
Designer: It will be fine.
I: I strongly recommend to you not to do it.
Designer: Why?
I: Confusion besides other reasons.
Designer: If you can do it, do it.
I: Ok than.
$request->getIP() == 'his_ip' ? 'hide-scrollbar';4 -
Why the fuck would anyone still want to support IE? It's 2018 for fuck sake! Sure, there's no reason a website shouldn't work on IE, but do I really need to fuck it up just because something doesn't properly align in IE?
Fuck IE! Why can't we just let it die?11 -
"Well, how hard could it be to do it in this impossible deadline?"
Well ... HOW ABOUT I STICK A LAMP POST UP YOUR ASS? HOW HARD COULD IT BE? YOU JUST STAY STILL AND I PUSH HARD ENOUGH, RIGHT?!12 -
[SO] Can you unload the dishwasher?
[Me] Of course.
*5 hours later*
[SO] Why is the dishwasher still not done ?
[Me] Why would it be ?
[SO] I asked you to unload it ....
[Me] No, you asked if I CAN do it, and I am able to do it, you didn't ask me to actually do it.
[SO thinking] God, why did I marry a fucking programmer.....12 -
I find it funny how so many people still do not know that 1 kilobyte is just 1000 bytes and not 1024 bytes!
That's a KibiByte!
Guys, kilo means 10^3, always! Always!23 -
Alrighty then, so you can do this and it'll still work...
Like, I suppose technically speaking it makes sense....20 -
>Answered my first question on SO
>Comment: "It's a wrong answer"
>Me: "Do you mind telling me why, so i can fix it? It could still help the op"

I see. You were quick to tell me I was wrong, but don't tell me why. Alright then.8 -

Learning Processing and Generative Art , still a Noob but loving it.
It's awesome what Code can do.16 -
when your first try to learn a new programming language, for example c++ and you are still new to coding:
"Wtf does it behave this way. How dafuq do pointers work...argh"
and then years later, you come back to c++, do a little revision and it all starts to fall into place and make sense. Man. That feeling.3 -
While setting up a very complex development environment I asked my colleges, why are certain configuration steps needed. They replied only "Just do it!". I see, that they may be Nike fans or deeply inspired by the Shia LaBeouf motivation speech, but I still feel like:2
-
Everyday I wake up, I just think where did humanity go wrong? What mistakes were made? How the fuck did we end up with IE? And why do people still use it?5
-
I hate it when you have non-developer friends because still to this day after 16 years they still ask me what do I do with their stupid confused faces. Bloody muggles.3

Installed an SSH server on my desktop so I can use the shell from my laptop...while still sitting in front of my desktop. Keyboard is less than a foot beyond my reach because leaning back, but laptop is in reaching distance.
Still have that SSH server up for mainly the same reason. Decided to also open it to WAN so I can do shit while I'm not home too.4 -
Just curious, how is it like to work as a developer. I mean, as a profession and not a hobby or freelancing.
From devRant, so far I know that you work in an office, the managers and bosses are assholes, and people always write unmanageable and undocumented code.
What else is it like? Do you get to work alone or do you have to work with people? Do you stay there all day long?
I know its still going to be a while for me, but I want to know how it will be like.24 -
Is it normal, or is the HR stalling?
I spoke with the HR and they offered me a job and they’re drafting the offer letter.
1 month later.
They’re still drafting the offer letter.
Do I have to worry about the length of responsibilities that I need to do?5 -
Me: *reading work order* Customer states Mac does not have sound
*Me turns on Mac, it makes the signature "BONNNNG" sound*
Me: Uh huh...
Coworker: Rule No. 1 of tech support: The users always lie
Me: True, but still! How do you miss the start up Mac sound?!3 -
PM: We have to do this this and this. How long will it take you?
Me: Looks like a 4 hr job
PM: ok
Me: Still not complete after 2 days
Me every time :D3 -
FOR FUCK SAKE APPLE! HOW THE HELL ARE YOU STILL IN THIS WORLD!
Was creating a signed file of the app to upload to their store and while XCode (that bitch!) was working on it, Slack, and Postman crashed!
Do I need to say why or you already knew it is because XCode ate all the RAM -.-7 -
- Hey how are your fingers today, do they still hurt?
- They're OK, why do you ask?
- Oh, then it must have been your lack of programming skills which made me puke while looking at your code.1 -
Product name: K.I.D.
Product version: v2
Project duration: 9 months
Deployment to LIFE ETA: within next 24 hours
Tests' status: GREEN
uuhhhh soooo exciting! Hopefully this time deployment tools do not fail, like they did when releasing v1. Thanks God it still ended well.7 -
Motherfucking jquery or adminlte, either one of this shit remove my element addEventListener, already found a way to do it, but it kinda hacky so I still searching the problem
Fuck both of you10 -
I accidentally turned on developer mode on my laptop. What do I do with it? What's it for. If it's on, I might as well use it.
Suggestions? it's win10 pro. (still playing around with Linux on VM, so suggestions of switching will be promptly ignored)4 -
Not sure what I'd do when it happens but from the looks of it Amazon want to start the AI takeover.
I guess I'll still develop games as a hobby :D -
Clients always add up:
- The time it took you to create the project.
- Enhancement times.
Client: "How are we still working on this a year later?"
Me: "Well motherfucker, you requested a change recently. It has nothing to do with the original request, nor the last 39 updates."
Like it's my fucking fault you keep changing your mind.3 -
them: "This external HD isn't compatible with my Mac."

them: *hands me box, with HD still in plastic wrap*

Sad story:
User : Hey , this interface seems quite nice
Me : Yeah, well I’m still working on it ; I still haven’t managed to workaround the data limit of the views so for the time limit I’ve set it to a couple of days
Few moments later
User : Why does it give me that it can’t connect to the data?
Me : what did you do ?
User : I tried viewing the last year of entries and compare it with this one
Few comas later
100476 errors generated

If you're planning to be a new entrepreneur (like me) here's a few things to keep in mind:
1) it'll keep getting harder but it's all worth it. Do not quit mid way no matter how hard it gets.
2) stop asking everyone for advice, they'll either be assholes or you'll end up getting confused by too much contradicting advice.
3) regardless of point 2, people will still advise you on everything (ikr). Listen to them, and if you don't agree with it... Do not bother to correct them, never helps... Just ignore it
4) if some one is an asshole to you or someone shoots your idea down, don't get discouraged. Reflect on it and if it's irrelevant, forget it all. Do not try to be an asshole back, always take the higher road.
P.S I'm also still learning... Hope you all very best for your endeavours :)6 -
I have had fiber for a week now and still can't get over how amazing it is to see this speed at my house. I'm getting 125 mbps download and upload coming from 6 mbps down/0.6 mbps up. I feel like I can do anything!10
-
When the new keyboard you ordered arrives at work (it's for at home) and your team lead remarks 'that is a big dildo you got there'. I did fire back by asking him if he was jealous which led to sudden silence. Still disappointed in him, we do rib each other all the time but this feels sexist and inappropriate. I'm used to it and laugh it off but I'd still expected better of him.13

PM: We don't need a spec. We'll figure it out as we go.
Me: O_O.... So what do you need the system to do?.....
PM: ( gives vague requirements)
4 weeks later I still no clue what they need.1 -
This was my first real programming bible. I remember reading it chapter after chapter in the car on long car trips as a youngster and being so excited about the stuff I was learning I would explain it to my mom in the front seat as I was learning it. I'm sure she didn't understand a word of it.
Funny thing is I still do that today, 25 years later. And I'm sure she still understands not a word!
So, what was the book that really got you into programming?10 -
Seriously? How hard is it for people to do one simple thing. You spell it out for them, and they still find the inability to do their job. This is RIDICULOUS!! 😡2
-
If I do it in python : Finish in one day!
If I do it in C++ :
1 week for installation and configuration
3 days for coding
Another 1 day for troubleshooting...
But I will still prefer do it in C++.5 -
*Sigh*
Eclipse is such horrendous garbage, it somehow even manages to run like shit on an SSD.
Literally all my software runs smooth as butter on the SSD, even VS ffs. No, not Eclipse. Still hangs up constantly, fails to respond, takes ages to do things.
Incredible.9 -
It hurts man, it fucking hurts
I feel like I'm a ghost, like im not there. I don't really exist
I try to be better, actually doing something, anything. I really do. But nothing changes. So many times have I decided to finally make the change. This time I'm really gonna make it out of here. Yet I'm still here. Not one thing has changed. I'm still a shell of a person
It really fucking hurts
I just want to exist17 -
What happens if you break your hand/arm/wrist and it requires an arm sling (picture attached)? Can you still work or what? I'm assuming it varies from company to company or something. Do you have anything in place for preparation for this event?7

Got some requests about changes in design some weeks ago. Did the most of what I can do, but something wasn't possible, so I told them that I cannot do what was requested.
They still ask me to do it.5 -
Sometimes I want to tell my friends how exciting and fun my job is but then I remember that they still don't understand what I do after numerous attempts to really dumb it down 🙃2
-
the more time I spend in this industry, the more I come to realize that it's a very blurry line between PROGRAMMING and CONFIGURING.
How much programming do you do these days, really? Isn't it just configuring your frameworks and libraries and engines to do what they do in the way you want?
Does it still make you programmers...?
And then what are these .conf files for your application? A declarative configuration for your... imperative configuration...?20 -
- How do you think, could you port our app to iOS?
- Never did iOS apps, but I will learn and try, maybe I will became iOS dev
Fuck, I'm still supporting it
Dear Android devs, never come to the dark side! It's a nightmare4 -

A few days ago, one could have said that C++ is giving me PTSD.
Now, I've come to adore, cherish and love it for it's simplicity.
It feels so much better than Java.
No shit on java, it's good in what it does but damn boi C++ can do like, fucking everything.
Probably still gonna gib me PTSD in a week or so but fuck it.13 -
Google is amazingly good at using tech to solve problems we did not even know we have...
I mean.. How did we even survive til this day w/o google making restaurant reservation or barbershop calls..? We are cavemen bcz we still do it all ourselves... So inefficient..

Why do so many online resources still change quote characters in the code for the curly ones? It's 2023, how hard is it to add a fucking rule to skip conversion inside the <code> blocks?9
-
I know this really isn't the place for that, but I got a Raspberry Pi 4 about half a year ago, and it's still in my drawer, untouched. I had tons of ideas before, none since I got it, anybody has any idea for cool stuff I can do with it?15
-
You know what I don't like?
Getting dropped into an ongoing project, especially as a replacement for somebody else - looking through the code and realising the code is perfectly fine - except I would do it differently.
Yes, I see why those choices were made. It's up to specs and according to the convention - but it still _feels_ wrong.2 -
I had a friend who wanted to make a social network and Steam-like gaming platform with "near impenetrable" security in around 2 months from scratch. He still wants to do it. Maybe he should think.2
-
Quick question: Does your mom understand what you do at work?
Mine still thinks I'm doing some Marketing-Shit whereas I tried to explain multiple times to her what IT and eCommerce is...3 -
I spent the entire freaking day on one spec — one! — and I still haven’t gotten it to pass. Or fail. It’s still just breaking. Even the simple crap is breaking, so getting the actual complicated things I need it to do working? Bloody pipe dream (whatever that means).
Just. Goddamn this system is complicated and poorly designed.
And no, before you ask, of course there is no documentation.
I want my day back. 😡4 -
Not only are you not your job, your job is not worth taking home with you; unless it's actually your company, leave it in the office. You can love your job and still have days when you hate it, or days when you'd rather be doing anything else; that doesn't mean you don't still like what you do.
As a profession we can all be obsessive and not take the time out that we need, so make special effort to do so, even if that just means you're working on a personal project instead. Your brain, and partner, will be glad that you did. Whether you like to admit it or not, everyone needs downtime.1 -
Boss wants me to become lead developer on a huge project; I still consider myself Junior and feel like there is still more for me to learn before I can even accept something like this. The company is amazing and I would love to step into this role but I fear that I will only disappoint.
What would you do? If I should take it; could you recommend resources that would help me level up?8 -
"Yesterday "
Client: ''Perfect! How did you do this do quickly? "
Me: "I used a library"
"Today "
Me: "I'm still debugging. It will take some time"
Client: "well, It has already taking too long.... I can hear Mozart in the background. Maybe you need to go to a library to get some quite and get it done fast. Visit the one you used yesterday. "
Me: "library?Ahh... I meant plug in like.... Code, a library is a bunch of packed code. "4 -
Hey Instagram, let this serve as a piece of advice on your algorithm for suggested posts.
IT 👏 DOESN'T 👏 FUCKING 👏 WORK.
I have to do this daily, and the piece of shit still thinks I'm into nature and National Parks. BUT IM NOT.7 -

I don't like web design, but i'm also annoyed the people I want to have do my tattoos don't have anything on their site (just says under construction)...
Would you design a website for free tattoos (if you like tattoos), or is it still more trouble than it's worth?5 -
I'm still in denial that Dropbox did 1.1b$ in 2017, cash flow positive. Do they actually even get big clients? It has to be all enterprise, because I highly doubt any consumer actually purchases a Dropbox plan.10

I started programing when I almost failed at some IT class 7 years ago when I was 16 in high school. So I started googling how to do basic stuff in java (if, for, while,... ) and I just fall in love with it 😊 I still remember how I wanted to make a button in Java so I googled: how to button in java 😂
Here I am still in love with it and I think I will always have this need to learn new programming languages, technologies, frameworks,... 😊🤓 -
I honestly do not understand why people speak so badly about PHP(that's the general vibe I am getting from all these different platforms) or maybe it's because I am still new at it I am yet to find out the reason.27

Me : How can i learn Java?
College Senior : Do some online courses.
*did a course for a month! Still not confident*
Me: it ain't working for me.
Senior: Do some project.
*Created an Android App under internship! Still not confident*
After wasting my 6 months on Java, i reached to the conclusion that: "Java Sucks" (at least for me)
No Offence!16 -
Aaaah. I ask one fucking question on askubuntu. One dude marks it as duplicate, I explain in multiple comments it has no relation. Still fucking creates an answer with some solution with clearly doesn't work. If he had EYES he could see my configuration is already there and with his one brain cell conclude that it has nothing to do with it for fuck sake.8

i told my boss ill just do it tomorrow and he agreed and i never did it. i still have it that part of the code as a pending TODO. it has been 7 months now.

Windows 10 wanted to restart my XPS due to some updates, said will do it during idle hours but I still restarted. Boots back , couldn't. Tried again, same. Removed all USB devices , HDMI monitor, mini display monitor , still no luck. Removed power cable & it starts.
Slowly and carefully added all back one by one. Working for now ...2 -
Ugh, tried to update to high Sierra, it has been like half an hour and still it's stuck here saying the same thing "44 minutes". What should I do guys?13

Fuck me. 5 installation attempts later, still can't get arch to boot after removing the live usb. Do I have the wrong fucking kernel, cause it can't find it during boot now. Fucking hell, I just want this shit to run.30

If you're expecting a call from a company to do a phone screen, make sure your phone is charged... if it dies before you can even tell me why you're looking for a new job and I still can't reach you 15 minutes later, it's very off putting.1

Four freaking crypto recovery ads on this platform today. They do spend effort in it, still it's full of typos. So retards that work hard? What would the scam be? I'm very interested if those guys actually make money4

Does anyone else feel like HackerRank questions are trick questions?
Without a textfield to explain the answer It highly depends on how deeply you think about it..
Can you do x with technology y?
Yes.
Can you do x with technology y alone?
Well yeah but no, you still need something to process it. What does "alone" mean? Without electricity you sure can't do anything.
Extreme example but you get my point..6 -
I'm a programmer who is still learning, and I've been having some nasty impostor syndrome lately. How do you deal with it? And does anyone know some websites with good programming tests/quizzes? I want to see how much I know.

Why do people still use both curl or wget? There's httpie and it's awesome!
http PUT your-host.com header-name:value parameter=value
Profit!
And it formats the response for json without jq. It will just show binary for binary content and you download by adding the download flag.
Yet why is curl still the default!?4 -
Woo! My first Vulkan window that does buffer swapping (swapchain image presenting in vulkan lingo). It doesn't draw anything yet and still took me 3 days lol
Note that if you try to resize it or minimize it or do basically anything with it the whole application crashes but still11 -
So saw that google released 'official' themes for chrome and thought fuck it, lets try it out...
Chrome will only use CSD if you use the default fucking GTK+ theme else it will revert to chromes custom icons...
Just how fucking lazy do you have to be for this to still be a thing?!2 -

Pro tip: if you wear a full face mask with a BiPap, do not start puking in your sleep.
Glad my body apparently decided to nope the hell out as soon as I started aspirating, but it was still a singularly unpleasant experience I hope never to repeat.
Thankful to still be alive.4 -
I tried to unsubscribe from an email list and it says “Please allow 10 business days for us to process unsubscribe requests to be processed.” WHY TF do you need 10 BUSINESS DAYS?? I UNSUBSCRIBED 3 DAYS AGO AND YOU’RE STILL SENDING ME YOUR DAMN EMAILS.8

Definitely 'ditto' this is one of the best tool for every programmer.
It's a multi clipboard-history where you can store more then one item. You never need to think: 'what's last thing in my clipboard. Do I still need it?'1 -

It still amazes me that people willingly choose apple. After being given a MacBook for work, I sort of expected it to grow on me a bit. But no, it forces you to do everything in their stupid apple way. It is form over function in its purest form.11

Do any other teen programmers find it frustrating that clients will only hire us for a lower price? I understand it's a matter of experience, but I still feel designing and programming an iOS app is worth more than $2500...5

Ai depression—— I feel increasingly depressed and hopeless about potentially applying for junior dev jobs - I feel like why? What’s the point when GPT can do the low level junior stuff in place of me? I would really appreciate some words of motivation…. Is it still worth it?19

All Russian luxury brands are scam. And I mean ALL of them. No matter if it says "made in England" or "made in France" on the package, it's still a scam if it's Russian deep inside. It's just the regular shit repacked and sold at 20x the price.
Here's the algo:
1. You lookup the brand name that claims to be luxury
2. If it has something to do with Russia (Russian executives, etc) — it's a scam.
This doesn't cover the regular, non-luxury brands. AK is still a good weapon, KMS is still a good windows 10 crack :)11 -
A: Do you still have that number?

A: That number written on that paper I see on your desk.

Oh my gosh. Windows is...eh..
I mean, it is outdated and slow, has bugs and many other stuff, but do you know why I use it? It is widely supported.
Compare application support on Mac or Linux! It is nothing compared to Windows.
However, I will still have to deal with it for a very very long time...3 -
How does it feel to be excluded from your team even though you've worked so hard to finish the project.
Then there's this guy that doesn't do anything, still gets the glory.2 -
Why do people think that data structures are interchangeable??
Each fucking one answers a set of constraints!!! Yes, you can still use it, but let's be clear: even if you can screw with a shovel, you should still use a screwdriver!!! Functional constraints generate technical ones, not the other way around!!!!
And for fucks sake stop searching "EASY", and start chasing SIMPLE!!!!5 -
How do some of you deal with being under qualified when it comes to job searching?
Do you still try to send an application just to see if it sticks?
Or do you try to find a listing that matches a great majority of your qualifications.2 -
Was working on a game and I hated having to hardcode stuff I wanted to add so I started splitting it into external json files but by the end (and to an extent still learning it) learnt how to do mod support and simple user generated content, really cool stuff to learn about.

You shitty brat, if my HR staff didn't call you, they didn't call you. Still don't understand? Ok, simpler explanation. Because THEY DO NOT WANT YOU.
Just because we know each other doesn't mean you will get hired at my work. And you are not even a developer, you are a freaking sales man. Why the heck do you keep asking me about it?1 -
When you've got a demo to do over a lunch meeting, but it's still broken and your 2-person team only has 2 hours to pull it together..3

Companies try to find young devs, less experienced but more openminded and flexible.. do you think we will still find some cool sobs when we're > 40 || > 50 years old, even if we keep up with new technologies and stuff?
Never thought about it until now..3 -
Oh boy!
Aren't we off to a fucking great start, first turn on my Xbox and it keeps overheating...
Ok I'll leave it for a bit and just jump on my PC and do some work but nooooooooo. Boot it up and it fucking hangs on an A2 boot code (Drive issue), unplugged every drive and look at that, still on fucking A2...
I do not need this right now. Can't afford a new fucking PC if this one is going to be fucking up like this -,-2 -
What do you think about HTTP/3, QUIC, WebTransport?
https://web.dev/webtransport/ (It is still a *draft*, but google is already implementing it and stuff)
Idk it feels weird for me that HTTP will be served over UDP/QUIC10 -
I still do exist, long time no see, fellow Devs! How is it going?
Didn't posted here in long time. Anything new relevant? I just started studying at an university. Hoping to post again here.14 -
A Timehop from 3 years ago stated "I will learn one day to do 301 redirects in .htaccess without Googling it."

I still struggle to find the suitable address book software for our company. It supposed to be secure and inexpensive. But how so? It's flipping not possible to have both!
My boss answer to almost everything I say: Just do it! - in German: einfach machen! Please hulp!10 -
(I am talking about my school’s promotional project, look at my rants for reference)
Deadlines were insane and I had nothing to do about it. Had to touch JavaScript for the first time in 3 years and code like I still know it by heart.
In short: H.E.L.L. It stands for:
H oh
E god
L never
L again6 -
So my company is now giving us flexibile work hours, but we still gotta do 9 hours a day, of which 1 can be outside the office. Wouldn't it be easier to just make it an 8 hour-day and be done with it?2

Client: I need you to clean up the database and remove all rows [with children] with a timestamp older than 5 years
Team: OK
Team [internally]: we definitely need a dba for this
Me: dba? Why? A junior dev can do that
Team: yyeeaahh, but still.. A DBA would do it better. You know, foreign keys and everything
Me: ....8 -
When you buy a parasol for your mother because you’re a good son, but she didn’t factor in the aerodynamics of having a solid fence next to it funnelling the air upwards.
What do you do when it keeps tipping?
Do the same thing you do with software of course!
Fake it ‘til you make it and use twine and weights (bricks) to hold it still 😂😂 -
What the f*** is this gradle in Android Studio??
M getting tired with this error. Whenever m starting studio it stuck on waiting for build to finish project.. I already done with checking offline work still it's not working.. What the f*** should I do with this error??9 -
Still find it amazing how archaic command prompt is, why do we still need to manually select which drive we want before cd'ing into the directory...
Why can't we just do cd D:/foo/bar, I understand you want us to use PowerShell Microsoft but you are the company that still ships internet explorer so please at least bring it up to standard a little -,-2 -
Some days it feels like visual studio is conspiring to break my sanity.
Compile.... 5 errors
Clean & recompile .... 12 errors
Open file that contains the errors
Error report clears all errors ...
Compile .... 12 errors .... But still bloody runs
Stop program .... No errors
Grrrr
Compile .... No errors
For god sake .... Which is it ... Do I have errors or not FFS3 -
OK, lets again talk about net neutrallity
The FCC said they dont give a shit about the people and will not listen to them.
OK. Got it?
So, what now?
Write your ISPs about the Problem! Thats literally the only thing I can Imagine to do! But honestly, I think its still useless... It still wont help... Were all doomed6 -
Is it legal to destroy other company's site or app. because they didn't pay your money in the past?
and also app they created is not secure.
The company is in another country.
.
.
.
If "No"
I'll still do that. I don't care.4 -
I waste 50 minutes reading tutorials and StackOverflow answers just to configure to my Git and GitHub account so that I can push the main local branch to the main remote branch from my terminal, and I still can't do it.

I've been using python in my work for about the past 2 years. I came from c++ and I still don't know how I feel about it. What do you think about python?14

Guys has this happened with anyone ..my older aws ec2 instance just vanished from my console but I can still ssh into it, how do I manage it for security groups and other things..?9

Just created a tiny (not yet stable) selector library that allows you to change properties on multiple elements just like you would do on a single one. It also has some more useful features. https://github.com/kosimst/kazel
Still in development, but prototype should work. What do you think?6 -
I recently decided that I was going to broaden my palette and learn a bit of Java. I've had painful experiences in the past, but it's been a few major versions since I last did anything in it. Then I go to update the OS Java, and IT STILL FREAKING PROMPTS ME TO ADD YAHOO TOOLS TO MY BROWSER!!! ARE WE STILL IN THE 90s? DO YAHOO AND ORACLE STILL HAVE A DEAL? OR WAS SOME JAVA INSTALLER DEVELOPER TOO FREAKING LAZY TO REMOVE IT FROM TUE INSTALLER PROMPTS?!
And that's why I have a problem with Java.3 -
Currently working on a Selenium script to do my timesheet for me. It's been 30 minutes and it still doesn't work because I'm having trouble selecting the input fields correctly (the ID's are dynamic and keep changing!)
It takes me 30 seconds to do it manually.3 -
According to people here, ternary operators. I don't care what I'm doing, if I can use a ternary operator instead of an if, get ready for it!
I guess implicit brackets on conditionals and for loops if it's a single line. Anything that saves me typing boilerplate, but it's still readable, I'm gonna do it.1 -
Burned out but still got work to do.
Haven't slept in 2 days now I just want to sleep but can't get sleep.
Damn it fuck,I feel like just beating the crap out of something anything for that matter.4 -
Why does it feel like nobody uses D?
I love it. It combines the best bits of C++, Java, Ruby and even some Python. It still is C ABI and C++ ABI (ish) compatible. It can do everything you need it to. It's not limited like Java. It feels cleaner than C. I LOVE IT. But I don't understand why there's not much going on about it. Is it because it's not 100% stable yet? I don't know. AAAARGH7 -
First time setting up a linux distro for myself I decided to do it on an external hard drive. Accidentally formatted the whole thing. Lost 200gb of anime.
I restored about 60% soon aftet meeting up with a friend of mine. But it was still devastating.7 -
Since im still a student in software dev (am I still welcome here on devrant? :P), it is easy for me to not do coding. Specially because the summerbreak just started. However I am going to try and learn some stuff about network programming, that caught my attention :D3

While applying for an Android Developer job position, a recruiter called me and said: i had just received your CV and we are currently looking for Android developer but first you have to do a coding exam just press on the link and you will do the exam if you pass it we will make it up for an interview.
I was extremely satisfied until i saw the exam and it was full of hard alogirthm functions and data structure. In which i don't remember
Do you think after years of experience and projects such exams are still required?6 -
Decided to get myself a new phone as the 2013 model is getting morally obsolete. I can still flash Lineage/Android10 and it will run it. But the apps (e.g. Google Maps) nowadays are such a performance hog it can't cope.
So I've searched through gsmarena, prioritizing smaller phones, picked myself a candidate and had it on my desk after few days.
The 2013 mindset still the same "do the backup before touching the phone in any way". How do you do backup? Unlock bootloader, boot/flash TWRP, run backup.
I've realized only after the unlocking and some googling, that the unlock automatically deletes TA partition and stored DRM keys. So advanced licensed features of the phone are gone. Also there is no way to lock the bootloader again, so I've lost the SafetyNet validation too.
tl;dr: I've fucked up my new phone as a first step after I got it.6 -
If you ever get a chance to refactor a 5/6 years old code , just do it .
Dont loose hope , you'll eventually have a great time .
Its totally worth the effort and time . I learnt so many things. (still in the proccess)5 -
Is there anyone else who's working for a company regardless of day and nights? Holidays or working days? And still get the old shitty pay?
Fuck this job I want to resign but can't do it because of financial problem.
damn I'm hating this situation.
do anybody know how can we build freelance profile how much time it takes?3 -
Why is accidentally uploading a binary file in ASCII mode via FTP still something people do? Aside from the obvious point that FTP needs to die and something else needs to be used instead, isn't it about time binary was the default?11
-
Linkedin looks like some devs went to Facebook, right clicked, saved a copy of the webpage and just edited some of the text. Why do we need "Like" and "Comment" features?
It was fine when it was just a professional networking site. Boring, sure, but at least it did the thing it was created to do.
It's all very cringe now.
PS I got my current job and will probably get my next job through Linkedin, but it still makes me cringe4 -
Dev Goal : Fix the bugs you said you will solve in 2015, but are still open,
Because you know what fix to do,
And you are too lazy to do it.
And too busy, creating half baked, hacky fixes for new exciting problems.
:D -
I don't still understand why I leave work with an unsolved bug, when all I'll eventually do is think about it!2
-
Friends do have their uses after all.
Me: I'm still trying to find a to-do app I actually like.
Friend: Don't you make software for a living?
Me: More of a help desk monkey but yes.
Friend: Why don't you just make the app you want?
Me: Because it hadn't occurred to me that I could probably do that until now.
Time to go read up on android development and java.1 -
I just realized I do actually whiteboard. It's just that I do it on the computer using Visio...
Maybe everyone else on my team does too just they used an actual whiteboard...
Still doesn't quite explain some of the crap that shows up in the code though...3 -
Recently changed up my keyboard and bought a US style instead of my usual UK style, but changed it in Windows so I still have all my keys where I expect them.
But how the hell do you guys live with the tiny ass enter button? My pinkie is bigger than it! -
What things do people around you keep repeating related to programming?
For me it is surely "linux is soooo permissive", which is true but still funny when people start saying it unrelated and simply as a mean to jokingly explain why something doesn't work how is supposed to. Even if the problem is not even on a computer4 -
Fuck this algorithms course. How the fuck do you expect me to populate a 2d array of N^2 elements with data in linear time if you won't fucking let me write to more than one element at a time???
Dear CS department,
Make sure your homework makes fucking sense before shipping it off to students.
Regards,
A pissed off student
And before anyone comes at me with this "But you can technically do that if there's k*N elements and it would still be linear time" shit, fuck off; there's a worst case of needing to write to half the elements in the 2d array so it's still N^2 no matter how you try to "but technically" your way though it.3 -
when you have coded the sun the moon and the stars. but the motherfucker still wants a universe engraved on a fucking ice cube. AND YOU'LL DO IT ANYWAY. CAUSE YOUR HIS FUCKING BITCH. YOU GUCKING GUCK!2

Me : *insert random name here* .js is a sign you are lazy devs.
My Friend : Meh, this is just side project. Only to try it out.
Me : You still can do that fast in plain js tho.
Also Me Sometimes later:
MF : whacha tryna' do?
Me : gonna deploy this app real quick.
MF : what js framework do you use ?
Me : Yes.
God something's wrong with me. Fucking hell.2 -
It kills me when people performing UAT do not know how to test a particular functionality but still mark it as a defect when something uneven happens! We use IMF to build the input using tags. Sometimes they won't even care to know the right tag to fit in the params, but would still mark it as a bug whatsoever!
-
I fucking hate myself for having this bug in the first place, I thought I had it solved, committed and pushed to git but still, it persists.
I'm trying to check if the value I'm inserting into the database exists or not, this is my useless fucking way to do it...
What the actual FUCK.
I'm in my own existential pain trying to solve this shit and it's still not working
SEND HELP PLEASE20 -
during a programming introduction course on loops my pals started writing `for` loops instead of `while` loops like so:
`for (;expression;) {}`
spent weeks explaining why it's wrong. needless to say, they still do it. had to hinder myself from ripping my hair off my head11 -
VLC for android is horrendous when it comes to network storage (and ux, but that's vlc in general). 3500 audio titles in a playlist being vlc-native format via samba-share. The fucking thing just freezes up. 3 minutes later it still doesn't do anything..
Oh you say it's prebuffering? How nice it's able to do so witHOUT READING ANYTHING FROM THE FUCKING DISK IN MY SERVER NICE DUDE IS IT GOING TO FETCH IT TELEPATHICALLY?!3 -
8 months into a complex Agile project, managing multiple Scrum teams -

Me: finally we have automated deployment to production
Team Lead: No production deployment still requires manual approval
Me: ok how do you want to handle it slack, webhook, what do you suggest
Team Lead: let's do a proof of concept (POC) for this
Me: Ahh... Poc for this ?
Team Lead: you don't know sh*t ?
Me: well I know you're are creating that here
Next day team change... -
I know it’s old hat but…Edge…I mean really how is it still so bad? How do you base your browser of the chromium engine, have, gosh idk, a billion dollar dev budget, and still, still, it’s significantly worse than chrome in every ui/ux way.8
-
!rant.. When the client makes you do something stupid, and you try to tell them, but they still want it, so you give it to them, and weeks later, they come back asking you to revert it.... ugh!!
I wanna comment on the jira "I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so!!!" so bad..6 -
Does anyone else have a boss who is supposed to have a lot of technical but you have to explain everything like your talking to a newbie that can't seem to follow logical arguments?

Anyone else currently in an auction for a .dev domain? If so, how much would you be willing to spend on it? And how much do you want it?
I'm currently in a closed auction for <firstname>.dev and there seem to be 2 bidders including me, the price is still $155 -
That feeling when it's your notice period and you are given a shitty project and you still do it with complete dedication (well, because you are emotional and stuff) and on the second last day of your tint at the company, he project is scrapped! :'(3

Hello world (my first "rant"). What do you think about laptop stickers? My Macbook is still clean after three years. Now thinking about filling it up. Why, why not?7

How do you actually structurize _big_ projects and still use js components?
_big_ = more than 300 pages. Seriously. Not addtodo, listtodos and thats it. A huge fucken amount of pages.2 -
Implementing tons of ridiculous/almost impossible features you disagree with cause you're just a powerless employee who needs the job..
You still do it anyway. -
i guess im learning COBOL now..
didn't even know, this language still exists, and is alive until the Lead of the Department came around and asked me if i know that language, because they have a potential customer Project.
Others said, i shouldn't do it, but i'm also curious.
At the very least i will check it out 🦕5 -
Finally got Stripe charges to work, then changed it to make subscriptions work in the Django app I was working on for Capstones. At least in theory. Works locally, but hasn’t been merged into our Production branch yet, so there could be something missing.
Still, super happy to have finally crossed it off my mental to-do list. -
Made a mysql innodb database go do a fancy shuffle like schrödingers cat, with many tables appearing as "ghosts", in production.
still not sure what went wrong.
i noted it was extremely slow and thought restarting the service might Help it... -
god, I just reported a post accidentally while trying to mute it... no prompt or anything
this app/site sure needs some love... should I do an open source version, but somehow still monetized in an ethical manner?8 -
Why do people still use ftp, Its been 45 years since its inception and some application just rely on it6

I was looking forward to creating app like Alipay for US/EU market, then I realized Venmo exists. What do you think, is it still worth trying to compete? Outside of Venmo we don't really have any other competition.29

do you think that the new 300Mbit network interface of RPi 3B+ will be useful?

I'm binge watching Person of Interest right now and I would like to know the community feels about it.
I feel that it is still futuristic and we aren't there yet. What do you think?1 -
Throw out or minimize paper tests and teach primarily through projects and the tools and libraries that are actually used.
You can still do the theory, there’s merit to it, but I wish I’d had more experience in my classes with the things employers are actually looking for. -
Anyone able to tell me why people hate so much on PHP and still do? Is it really that bad a language?5
-
I fucking hate Windows... Yes I know it's beating a dead horse, but bear with me for a second here:
I really didnt mind it before, but I fucked up majorly on my dual-booted PC yesterday (dont fuck around with systemd if you don't know what you're doing) and needed to reinstall both Linux and Windows. Linux still has some hardware problems (second screen's not being detected), but else everything's just dandy.
But Windows... Holy motherfucking horse-cum drenched piece of goddamn trash! Shit wont listen to me!! I can click in that retarded settings app whatever I want and it still merrily keeps doing whatever the hell it wants 🙄🙄 Why exactly do I still put up with that?!
(It's gaming)6 -
That was in the digitally-controlled analog equalizer I worked on (and still AM working on) with my dad, we kept sending something through the SPI line that was consistently sending clown vomit and corrupted data to the display and as a result my whole code was hanging and bootlooping like crazy.
The fix? No idea! Because I had (and still don't have) ANY step-based debugging, all I could do is try multiple ideas and see if one of them would stick. That ended up being the solution.
I still have a video of this issue, I just need to find it. I will post it here when I have it.3 -
I recently volunteered to be the admin of our student website. Boy was I in for a ride... I can only imagine the conversation went something like this:
IT: previous IT
P: some person
P: we need some additional sites that are unrelated to the main site, where should I put the files?
IT: just put them inside the folder that has the files of the main site, it doesn't matter.
P: we have some sub-domains that we do not use anymore, what do we do with them?
IT: just delete the files, don't bother with deleting the subdomain
P: we are having an event, what do we use to store user applications, we used google forms previously and it worked just fine.
IT: we will have the applications go to our mySQL database, but everything will be in one table so that it's more readable.
I mean I'm still a college student so there might be some deeper meaning to this, but still i can't look at this without my ocd getting the better of me.1 -
What's up with those fucking internships? Is it a new way to exploit people and have someone do all the hard work that no one else wants to do but for free?
Oh and by the way, if your company is worth more than 10 million dollars and you still have unpaid internships FUCK YOU.5 -
Spring boot does very much automagically.... but to find every possible configuration is hard....
I found out that it has an automatic config for Scheme Server... but how the fuck to configure it 😑
And do I still need avro made domain objects 🤔 it's hard to fight through all these documentations and versions of spring. 😖 -
Manager : You really shouldn't be doing that
Dev : Its in my job description
Manager : Yeah but you still shouldn't be doing it.
Dev : Who should I hand it off to?
Manager : We don't have anyone else to hand off that task to.
Dev : Ok , do I stop doing it?
Manager : 😡Of course not , it needs to get done! I'm just saying you shouldn't do it.
Dev : ????????3 -
Do you know the frustration you feel after you worked on your game engine all day and ended up with it not working properly anymore? It's so diffuse.. you didn't really do anything physically, but you still feel like you failed and broke something that you will now have to fix.

So... school is about to begin again...
Honestly I'm both excited and intimidated about it. It's my last year in high school, and I still haven't decided what to do after it. I guess I'll go to an university, and possibly continue with my conservatory... I want to do both things, hoping that the weight won't crush me.
If you're like me, still a student, what do you think you would like to do after high school?6 -
I have zero experience working in a company. I did a few freelancing projects. My friend forwarded my resume to a company. They contacted me after some time, and gave me a technical challenge. I have solved it, sent it back to them, now I am waiting for their answer.
What's the thing? After going to the company website, I realized they require at least 3 years of experience. But they still contacted me knowing that I am still a student and have only done freelancing work.
No matter do they accept my solution or not, this is a lesson for me and for everyone else: do not let required years of experience discourage you from applying to a position. You can still get a chance.
Happy job hunting to all you junior devs :)3 -

How do you hide your javascript file from showing for your client..aside from using obfuscation... do you know anyway to do this using npm and where you would just go
Var hide = require(‘hide something’);

Hides it from clients and still able to access functions by these javascript files?44 -
My dad didn't actually know what it was I did. He wanted to get me into hardware and network security type things. Basically the kind of things network engineers or systems admins do. I am still not sure he knows what I actually do.3

Dad: what do you do in IT classes
Me: mostly, learning new languages!
I'll never forget that confused face of his. Of course I explained him there were languages in informatics to. Still, it was pretty funny explaining it all. I'm happy he really thinks informatics is the future! -
Question to all linux users:
tl;dr MS office alternate for linux?
I am planning on switching from Win to some linux distro. But I hesitate bc I don't know what I should use instead of MS office or how I could still use it. I am searching an office suite that has a rather comprehensive UI, is stable, can be used offline and is compatible with MS Office since I still have to use it in school.
What do you use or would recommend?5 -
Fucked a clients wordpress website up by editing a saved option thats saved as serialised php data. Tried using the row data from a backup and updating it in the database and it still loads the fallback theme settings. What do?5

f*ck. I hate myself. I could've finished my assignment in 3 hours, and now it f*cking took me 7 hours because I get OCD and I'm too slow to f*cking do it. And I'm still not finished!!3

Have you ever been there when you write some code with everything you know and it still throws an error in the end when everything is said and done, you go ahead and do a last stupid thing that you know is not going to work but, WOAH... It worked. Then you didn't even bothered to know why, instead you were like, fuck it, if it works, IT WORKS!!!4

WK385, unrealistic deadline.
My bachelors thesis, ok the deadline was not set unrealistically by the school but it took ungodly amount of time for me to understand what I was supposed to do. By the time if actually got started I had four weeks left until deadline.
I still question myself how I pulled it off3 -
There's NOTHING fun about this drug anymore. WHY do I continue to give it the satisfaction of making me feel WORSE for still choosing it?8

My officemate who works for the company for the past 7years and counting. Doing QA for a supply chain erp; doing it for like 5 yrs and still asks for the basic / "happy path" scenario training. Like what kind of training do you need? It's been 5 years since your'e doing it!!
-
I am a fan of Rust, whilst I do not consider it a good contender for the "low level" area that I am privy to (game dev) I still find it an absolute joy of a language to learn, and use.
So this example here made me lol:

I hate going to bed with a headache only to wake up to a hundred emails about a feature they want in for that morning that the customer "needs" but has only brought up once before as a passing comment. Yeah, it was in the works but I don't have it done... I still have another 5 things to do before it gets done. I have an hour before you need it... There is no possible way to do this right now...
-
Colleague comes into the office and asks for help, I say of course, we can do it together.
The very moment when I got to see his keyboard I have regretted it. C'mon people clean your damn keyboards it is not okay even if "only" you use it. I was using 90% alcohol to sterilise my hands afterwards and I still don't feel 100% clean2 -

I've heard "someone" saying, that typescript and c# are somewhat similar. Now I've never worked with c#, but I still doubt it. What do you, human of devRant, think?8

I sometimes wonder , how do my co workers have so little ownership on what they do. The business analyst does nothing , the management cant even optimize a filter on an excel sheet let along Jira but are somehow still employed. What psychological trick is this , meanwhile I slave away at refactoring code until it is perfect(at least to my knowledge) and then do the other peoples jobs also. How do i stop doing this, it seems i cant help myself.1
-
My client will not let me design a product before making it live.... "Make it live so I can see it, then I will fuck about with the design (pixel by pixel) and THEN I will work out what the product should actually do."
WTF?!
Oh and when I do insist on designing before building, they insist on me doing that in POWERPOINT..!!
Why am I still doing this fucking job?4 -
CEO of my company often walks in our office with a joke: "I can't hear you do bit & byte".
I still don't catch it. -
"- Hello I work on this shitty Drupal project where the vendor directory is gitted, and we can't use composer becauses it returns error [note: i wish this was a joke]. So I installed a module that won't work, because it needs a depency. I installed it but it still doesn't work
- You need to edit your autoloader
- Ok, what do I put in it?
- Idk, you're not supposed to do it, and let composer do it for you"
Did I ever tell you how the Drupal stack exchange will one day make me turn into a serial killer? -
Ubuntu mate looks good. But man its so hard to remove it. A simple apt-get remove didnt do the trick. Spent a long time removing all packages. Still it is there in the login screen. Let it stay there. I am tired.4

It turns out I'm the only dev in the company this week as my teammates have been approved for the same week off.
Still a junior, only been here 6 months, still haven't so much as looked at most of the clients we have, still mainly doing frontend stuff and the last minute handover I received exists as approximately 20 Slack messages (although they're greatly appreciated because otherwise I'd be well and truly screwed).
Let's do this shit.2 -
I really do like VSCode but it is still lacking some features that i find essential.
There is no intellisense when for HTML in a PHP File. Although CSS Autocompletion works in HTMl Files. Quite Annoying2 -
Used Momentum to-do lists for money-tracking - who owns me how much for which project etc. Well from time to time Momentum just completely erases them. This was painful.
Momentum is really good extension but I still do not get it why it asks for email and password in the first place when it actually does not save anything in cloud. -
When can you call yourself a web developer? Is it when you start making money off of it, or can do a project successfully? I'm still in my bootcamp, but was just pondering thus with my other classmates. We were very proud that one day we'll call ourselves devs!4

Ive now waited a few days to do what i was so excited to do. Now im drunk and not sure what i was about to do. I do remember it had to do with a server tho, and im still excited :)

Thought about startup.. Strange but literally saying no single coin had in my pocket.. Still have love for startup.. But u know what no project no idea no team.. Still struggling for startup.. Fortunately few days back got proposal of govt project.. One min game literally coin replaced his face.. But after some days grant procedure issue pending sucks.. Still have love for startup.. Suddenly got a thought can I do it after grant but I know I have devRant support.. So still continue to love for startup ;-)
Just few days are remaining and waiting for it.. -
Quick question: If you install only Linux (say Ubuntu), and boot your system, do you still see bootloader screen with options to choose where to boot from (Ubuntu/Advanced Ubuntu) like we get when we have dual boot, or does it boot directly?8

Does anyone use a hackintosh for Dev? I do like Mac OS. How stable is it with updates, and is it still as hardware dependent as it was 3-4 years ago?2 -
I hate Visual Studio. It takes 2 minutes to load- it is a glorified word processor- sure it has compilers but that's the backend work shouldn't be doing any of that at the start. It should take 10 seconds to load. It has absurd number of annoying checkers like unused attributes or function not initialized (constantly hits on Start ()in monobehavior) I even told to skip that nonsense and it still does it. It doesn't however check like infinite loops easily accidentally do. You can't duplicate a script because it can't do the simple thing of ensuring file name and class match.7

As free software I guess you have to not be pedantic, but still felt like this was unnecessary when I feel like I having nothing to do with this political change nor will I have the ability or inclination to actively do something about it.3

Do you ever get those moments if you wonder if you're in the right field? I'm not talking imposter syndrome or anything, just plain, you can't do it.
I've been staring at this cpp function for over an hour now, and I still can't decide where is the right place to return it. This is like every single day while studying cpp, and it's seriously beginning to dishearten me. I know it's just one of those things that'll come with time, but it's been nearly two years now and I still can't get it...6 -
Why is Python still frowned upon in Competitive Programming? Like yes it's allowed, but why do we have such a huge stigma against it?2
-
Me to team: eslint-plugin-import is tripling the time it takes to lint our project (literally adding minutes to the linting process). Do we really need it?
Boss: what does it do?
Me: ensures import paths are correct; reorders imports; ...
Teammate: imports should NEVER be reordered!
*cue debate about reordering imports that is still raging - my question is never answered*5 -
Q. What's the greatest number of rebuilds / redesigns for a full system that you've done?
It still sticks in my head that in one job we went through five specs, and the system still didn't do what the business owner wanted! I think the goals posts must have had wheels!
😂😂😔😔😭😭😨😨4 -
What do you hate most about your current CI/CD setup at work?
Mine is that staging and production are released independently. If staging fails, it can still roll out to master. This scares me.9 -
My biggest regret is excessive, ignorant use of the `Shadows` keyword in a big vb.net app. That's not how you do inheritance.
It's been almost 10 years, and I still cringe every time I think about it.2 -
Can I used vscode for java webapp projects? I already do some research about this but still no luck (or maybe I'm just too noob) I still can't run it on a tomcat server.3
-
Getting my first tattoo today!
Do you guys still experience bad reactions from employers if they know you got tattoos?
I always wanted one or two but I am afraid I may get turn down for some job positions because of it.2 -
Google app script is awesome ! Now I don't have to open shitty mails they get trashed and I don't have to star important mails which they get automatically everyday ;) still lot it can do...way to explore more ...
-
"How about we don't do it this way because I have undone what you did and have redone it in a stupid way and if we have to do it the correct way we'll have to undo MY work, so let's just keep it like it is, ok?"
Really? And one of your arguments is "because it's working now", bitch it was working before, you just didn't read my code.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though, I don't think you did this on purpose, you were tired yesterday, I get it. But still, could've talked to me before deleting all my code.
I'm not that mad though, I got paid the same and still found a nice pattern I can use on my own future projects, it just won't be used at work. -
Fello SASS users!
I'm still an avid user of Compass, but since it doesn't support new versions of SASS I know I should move on
One of the main reasons I've stayed with it, is for its configuration file.
So what do you guys use now? Is Node SASS the way?3 -
Why is perl soo notorious? and why do people hate it. Like I'm a networking guy and sys admin and I like to write scripts and it's really handy. Though it annoys sometimes but it still helps.5

Getting sick of Amazon Interview Process in germany really... HR types do not read emails at all, do not answer questions, send duplicate mails... I already picked possible interview slots and still asked again to fill slot on another form...
Is Amazon Europe standards this low or is it shitty in the States also?3 -
During interview when they ask me where do i see myself in 3-5 years. Should i be honest about it and say i want to start my own company and do business and entrepreneur side of tech. Or should i lie in sense that i want to still remain working as an employee?12
-
entrepreneurship is kinda what i wanna do especially with women in tech i really really want that but still behind on what the purpose of it would be

Another Team: How do we do this thing? What aws role do we need?
Me: You do it like this, and I don't know the role by this guy does and all you have to do is ask him for the name of the role to assume.
AT: Ok, great.
AT: We're going to do it like this (wrong way, completely against best practices and completely against what the company architects dictate)
Me: No... thats the wrong way. Don't do it that way. That is bad, because (Reasons A, B, C). Do it the way I told you it should be done.
AT: Ok! I see thank you!
3 hrs later
AT schedules a meeting to go over options to do the thing ... including the WRONG WAY and they still haven't talked to That Guy to get the role name they need.1 -
By making badly optimized code that takes forever to run, I have a good reason to do nothing but feel like I'm achieving something by glancing at the progress bar every so often. "Still rolling, way to go my little rock with lightnings. You can do it!"

Facking Windows updates! If I tell you to "shut down and do the facking updates" end quote, I mean now! Not the next time when booting up.
Morherf. Still waiting. It even says "This will take a while". Uggh4 -
It's 2019 and companies still create apis without any hypermedia controls /hateoas. They require you to read some id from the responses body and use it at the other endpoint. Like wtf. Do people even know how webAPIs work?!4
-
Why the hell do people still use Java? It's so slow, messy, insecure, and heck, it doesn't even have unsigned integers, bytes etc.? Like wtf?34
-
My client wants great quality and time consuming code
And wants to pay least 😧😑
Defaq i still gonna do it but uh...2 -
Got to do some security audit of legacy ABAP code for SAP systems. Do people still use it? If yes, why.3
-
that moment when you have a really promising idea for an app but still don't know how to do it / know exactly it is still a long way to go.
-
So I fell for the vim meme some weeks ago and am now very used to it, but I think I'm still less productive than I was before. The problem is that I can't just go back to a bloated IDE.
So now I'm sitting here, unsatisfied with every editor, bothering so much I don't do my work.
I guess I'll just have to configure it more to my needs and learn some more features but still do I kinda regret switching.4 -
Failing to self study because i always get stuck on tutorials like so:
Do a, now do b. You should now get C. You can then proceed with d etc.
BUT I DON'T GET C. WHY NOT?! I FOLLOWED ALL YOUR FUCKING STEPS YOU SHITTY GUIDE/BOOK/ASSHOLE.
So i had to get basics from school where i could ask questions to such stupid things. It got better, but i sometimes still run in to it, and still can't google foo my way out of it. -
Just curious, but do a lot of people here actually search content using tags. I made a post on CSS around 2 weeks back and it still gets upvotes pretty regularly.4

Where I learn networks and cyber security, we started working with Scapy. I have a problem with pycharm, it cannot resolve half of Scapy's functions. Do any of you know how you fix it (the program runs but pycharm still doesn't like it)3
-
Its fixed. Your welcome.
Don’t ask me to do something and then complain because it takes too long and then redirect me on six other tickets.
I am a tank that will crush problems no matter how long it takes and still do your other six tickets. -
"Globals? What? I don't do no globals, maaaan"
aham, ok, what's that local dressedup as global there?
"but that's still a local, dude!"
gsus xrist! I'd cry if it wasn't endemic 🤦🏻1 -
Should I include that I am still working in my current Company in my resume while applying for a new job?
Hello, I am currently applying for jobs to other Companies, because I am starting to feel uncomfortable with my current job, and I was wondering whether it is important to indicate my current job and role, stating that I still work there, or whether I should completely take it out or indicate that I stopped working in the Company.
What do you suggest from experience?4 -
When you dont want to code a 100+ field form but still doing bcz you made it to office and there is nothing else to do
-
last day before holidays starts. It was horrible so much to do, organizing, meetings and still no end...
but the rain is droping on the window and this sound make my feels much better1 -
Honest question.
Developers that don't work for a company and that don't use freelancing platforms but are successful, you're making good money, how do you guys do it? What advice would you give me, I really just started out as a developer a few years ago and I can say I'm still struggling but have high hopes for the future. Any advice is okay.4 -
Friend: i sent you a message from contact page
Me: i still didnt make the backend because google's snackbar is not working
Friend: snackbar?
Friend: Does it have to do with eating?
Me: 😑 -
This is just my 3rd year in tech & 2nd year in Software Development (that means I'm still learning some advanced skills) but I've been told asked by my Head of Department to lecture Python next academic year (because he thinks I'm so good at it) and I'm still a student.
How do I balance things because I really want to become a software developer and I don't want lecturing to take my time away..?
Also do you have any tips on how I can deliver effective lecture..?6 -
Thinking of making some themes. Do people still do that these days? Is it a big market place?
Might start small with a jekyll github pages theme and see if I actually finish it.1 -
What do you think about the new Youtube layout?
New Youtube, new bugs.
I reported a bug when it was opt-in and guess what, it's still here: in subscription feed's listed view, scrolling is laggy after loading more items with stepless scrolling (e.g. Chrome w/ touchpad). So many unnecessary animations.
It's just really frustrating when you try to info large company about a bug and they do nothing. The previous ones are also still there...
I guess it's time to reboot my Youtube Data API client project, which I started just for this reason.3 -
Well, this eleventh hour, during-the-holidays change to buggy code to make it do something it's not designed to do is going like just about every other project like it has ever gone. Still not done. None of the programmer talent is available to work on it because it's at a time when everyone is traveling. And the third-party data provider is unreachable.

Hey all! My first post isn't quite a rant, but rather a question.
I see a few posts that are about project managers. Now, I'm still doing IT at uni, but I was quite intrigued by PM when I found out one of my family friends is an engineering PM. The idea of PM appealed to me as I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do mostly after uni (not ruling out development, ofc!).
My question is whether or not it would be beneficial to have a PM with an IT background, and if so, to what extent do the benefits outweigh the lack thereof?
Sorry for the wordy post.2 -
Hypothetically, your parents partly own a company. They ask you to do some technical stuff for this company (They think its easy, but technically speaking its not. IT isnt magic), but you've got a graduate school, an unfinished research proposal, and a day job with deadlines to deal with. You still do it anyway. Do you have a right for some sort of compensation? Do you have the right to reject?12
-
Do we still need virtualenv when we have containers? Cuz one of my friends thinks it’s a good idea to use virtualenv everywhere, even in production, even in an LXC?
Is it being paranoid or really a solution to some problem that would otherwise rise? I’m just curious.1 -
Why SQL, why???
I have a proc I need to modify so I add a select into it. Drop the proc and recreate it, run it, new select not giving results.
Modify the select to inverse filter to see what I do have, recreate the proc, run it, still no results...
Run four different cache cleaning queries, still no results from the new select...
Add a "select 1" before the new select, recreate and run the proc and now I have the new 1 and also the other select now has results...
Change the filters back, still getting same results...
Remove the select 1, no results...
What kind of devil cache is this?5 -

Has anyone had experience in an exclusive pair programming environment? Do you feel you can still be creative? How does it affect your individualism? How can you grab some headspace when you need it?1 -
How do you easily understand firebase? I'm implementing google sign in on my application but I can't make it. I read the firebase tutorials and google sign in tutorial but still I don't get it
Anybody here can explain to me step by step google sign in with firebase? -
Replace all the python scripts with Perl file extensions. It wouldn't really do anything because people would still be able to run things if they did things right, it would just be a harmless funny prank
-
How do you guys deal with working in Monolithic applications?
Think > 200 project in a single solution, each which a hefty chunk of classes.
I've been working in that codebase for almost a year now and still get lost in it.3 -
Branch Staff Member: EFTPOS isn't working
Me: Are you logged in as the right user?
Staff: No
*staff switches user*
Staff: Still not working
*remote in and see software had crashed*
*check computer uptime* ... 38 days
Me: Give it a restart
Rant: why do people expect their issues to be resolved magically by IT when rebooting would (usually) fix it? -
I still have no idea how bit shifting and masking work. I don't have to use it in my day-to-day anymore but I briefly worked as a game developer and still occasionally do side gigs and personal game projects. When I was working on games as my day job I had to do a fair amount of masking for a bunch of different reasons. But I've never gotten the hang of it. Everytime I have to create a mask I have to Google it and then I'm like "oh yeah of course that's simple enough". But inevitably the next time I have to do it I end up back at square one.4
-
Do you guys think it's worth it to learn how to use linux for fedora? I currently use Windows and I really want to get into node.js and want to start learning git as well. I'm still new to programming and haven't developed my own preference yet.1
-
Every time I get into an argument with the Rust complainer, I lose.
How was your experience learning Rust, and do you still use it? -
Not really a fight, but a disagreement that lead to some big changes in my mind.
When entering my school, I still had a part of me wanting to do game development.
I'm gonna make it short : We wanted to do a game in Java at school in first year, but one wanted to do it in C because didn't feel good with Java.
And I always sum that experience up by saying "Never again." The atmosphere in the team was very friendly, but that's the only good part of it. I hated doing that project, and it removed that small will of doing game dev (as a paid main job).
Maybe it would have changed if it was later during my studies, since I was still learning how to code during that project.
But I guess it showed that I was maybe not that motivated to do games.2 -
Has anyone of you ever dreamed of solving programming problems? I wake up still thinking about a problem that is totally unrelated to everything I do. Most of the time I even spent extra time still pondering about it even tough I'm very much awake. Maybe I need to stop staying at the office for 10 hours.2
-
When something is still broken after I fix it
When fixing one bug creates two more bugs
When I am too lazy to do anything at all
When I have to fix bugs in code I did not write
Whether the sun is shining or not,
whether it is hot outside or cold,
I always feel the same...1 -
Whenever I create a new backend and a new slack app for that particular backend.
Most painful thing is to authenticate slack requests.
I know HOW to do it, but I still HAVE to do it.
So, created a pip package for authenticating slack app requests.
Feel free to check it out and leave any feedbacks.

My fellow programmer, you came here for a rant?
I apologize, you can have no rants. I won't rant for you today.
But you can still help me. What do you think of TypeORM? I'm starting a new project and I'm thinking about using it.5 -
How do you guys deal with spacing in react? I already tried: putting it in components' styles directly, creating a component for whitespace and making utility css classes. Still I always end up finding a situation where it becomes harder and/or requires a workaround.
-
Why do you support sessions for an API (not REST)??
You remove the token and still get positive replies because the session cookie allows it.
At least the session in the cookie gets killed when the token is invalidated, but really, why?3 -
Sorry, I just have a Question. Please is it possible to continue typing in the same local in Pycharm Terminal where the server was initiated while it is still running?, if yes, what should I do to continue typing on the on the same local.
I do not want to open another new local, and I don't know if if that's normal with the community.1 -
Want a job where walking there one way eats up 50 mins or so of time so that the chunk keeps getting lost and where sitting on ones ass all day is not the norm.
Why can't the fucking FBI do what it claims to do ? Because if it still is. Not seeing it.2 -
Guys I have set Deja Dup Backup folders to save as in the picture, if my Home is already backed up Do I still need to have /Documents folder as i can ls it within /home ?

Manager: Can we achieve X?
Dev: We can do with Y. But with the time that you are allocating it is difficult to complete Y.
Manager: Can we do a temporary fix?
Dev: Sure. We can do Z. But we need to prioritise Y in the next sprint else Z will cause issues in the long run.
Manager: Sure
After many next sprints,.......
Manager: Hey, Z is causing us issues regularly. Can we do something about it.
Dev: We still can do Y.
Manager: Come up with document on the implementation. We'll implement it.
Dev: Sure. Will do.2 -
Has this happened to you all too or just me?
So I was interested in a coding course and it was really long like 8 weeks, but still I started and now in the mid I just got bored of it and want to do something else.
Do comment and tell me if it has happened to you too...1 -
One thing that I hate.
I don't remember having ever used Facebook to login into Quora. Yeah, you might say I did, but still I find it treacherously insane that they do this kind of linking with my information.2 -
Hello fellow germans devranters! I study Applied Computer Science (dual) in a big telecommunication company at the moment. But I found out that almost every IT related things (programming, configuring servers, databases whatever) are outsourced, we only work on project plans, project specifications or such things. But that is something I don't want to do my whole life. Are there still some big companys in germany where these IT related things are still made here?
-
Do companies still use the Merise method? It seems a bit off to me.
I am learning it at school, but it makes many tables that I think could be merged into one...3 -
Telling the customer it's not a system problem but their end users network problem over and over with proof and still making a fuss over it. What the hell do I do next?1
