Today I figured out how to remotely control my student's computers and how to send them messages when they're not doing the right thing11

Root's shortest and best rant ever:
I tendered my resignation today!
I feel so happy and free ^_^rant snip snip! resignation freedom is a wonderful thing three weeks before christmas not my problem root you little shit41 -
Around 2009 or earlier, I began the long grueling process of creating my own batch AI (yes batch as in Windows Batch , kill me for not knowing there were better languages around). Looking back at it, it is THE messiest thing I've ever created. Mostly because of how many unnecessary files were created to make the entire thing work. However, I’m still proud of it to this day because of the dedication I had put into creating the entire thing.
I would create diagrams on the mirrors in my room; of course I would be scolded for this. But I was mad with thought working through the entire thing.
I would scribble and type whenever I had the chance, trying to create the functions that would allow the thing to talk back to me. Finally, when it opened its eyes and spoke its first words I quickly started creating the functions that would allow it to learn new inputs. Over time and with some elbow grease I was able to polish it up to my liking.
The entire program branched off some of my more earlier programs in batch, they mostly ranged from the medial to the crazy; i.e. turning my computer on and off at certain times of the day, and multithreaded migration of files to new disks
It's not as sophisticated as other AI that were being built at the time, but at the age of 16 and with no experience in real programming at all, I'd say it was my first stepping stone towards more sophisticated programs, and ultimately, my decision in Computer Programming at all.22 -
A little ago I helped my dear @Divisionbyzero out with some server problems. He was stuck on them for ages and i solved them quite fast, something I'm actually proud of!
Now he sent me a thank you package!
This is the first thing I ever got for using my skillset to help someone out 😊 (work not counted)
Thanks mate! (couldn't turn the image for some reason)11 -
Finally done with being on call/standby so thought I'd order myself a pizza calzone 😍
I'm not saying that this thing is small but it's smaller than my hands.
I don't have very big hands 😭9 -
Finally got a job. The process was quick af! Hired in like a hour.
At least now I can't be homeless.
But I'm getting married Saturday, so this means one thing:
I'm a have to work while on honeymoon hahahah
My girl gonna be pissed but glad that I'm not broke10 -

Doctors called me back, I’ve got brain decompression surgery in a month... fuck my life. If it’s not one fucking thing it’s another.11 -
- My client on regular day.
U can manage your tasks by your own. App looks stable and you are doing well.
- Same client when I'm on Vacation
This thing is not working, that thing is not working. This is do or die situation for us. you have to cancel your vacation plans.
- Same client after I come back from vacation in which I wasted precious hours of my vacation time and fixed all the bugs.
I didn't release your changes yet coz I wanted to release it together with you. I was like "THEN WHY THE FUCK YOU RUINED MY VACATION" -_-4 -

There are people in my workplace who ask "why did you set your IDE to dark theme?". How do I convince them that turning off the lights above my cubicle, lowering the screen brightness and having a dark theme is the best thing ever to concentrate?
Not to mention earbuds and a hoodie.
How do I convince them that once you turn to the Dark Side, there's no coming back?6 -
The bad thing today: I killed my laptop with coffee.
The good thing today: it was my company laptop, not my private one.17 -
so i guess ill use my code.org teacher for this:
"credit card information is encrypted with the public keys"
"lists and arrays are the same thing"
"javascript is a powerful, fast, programming language" (bhahahaha)
"javascript is [only] used in web browsers"
"java and javascript are *extremely similar* but not the same"12 -
Dear "managers,"
Stealing credit for something you have not done is real theft.
When I come up with an idea and a detailed outline of how to build and deliver it, you do not get to say "oh I also had this idea." You did not. How could you? It uses tech you don't even know exists.
When I then proceed to build the whole thing on my own without any of your inputs (then again, you have no idea of how it works, what would you bring to the table), you don't get to parade my project in front of the board not even mentioning my name.
You see, it's not the first time you pull that off, you have taken full credit for every thing.
it's not just my wee feelings getting hurt for lack of recognition: it has real world consequences.
You get the promotion, you get the salary raise and you now live in a flat with a balcony and a view, while my wife and I share a studio as my salary has not budged.
You're a cunting thief, I hope your mom dies.
Best,

My current one, not Dev related but still...
Walked into my interview with a full head of hair and man bun with a big bushy beard.
Started the day after I shaved off everything for a charity thing, my manager went 3 days without realising who I was and just rolled with me being there .-.3 -
Just realized no one in my class knew that Stack Overflow was an actual thing, not just the website. Too much Java I guess :D10

My mental health has been down the drain b'cuz of circumstances. And unfunnily, it did end up taking the better of me. yet folks around me still do not believe it's a thing that people don't want to live anymore; rather it's a "childish" thing and "are you so weak" thing.
And I'm just gonna tell you, if you ever said that to someone who feels like the world is coming to an end for them, you're an unbearable ass, and you're probably one reason that person wants to off themself.
Living around some people is just torture on its own.7 -
My mentor is a GOD. He's a workaholic. He knows everything. The only fucking thing he doesn't know is that his MENTEES ARE NOT HIS FUCKING SLAVES.3

I'm a shit programmer
I'm 29 and I assumed that by this point I'd be successful some way or another, either by being financially abundant or technically complex.
I am not, just mildly accomplished instead.
Here'a list of thing I consider challenges that I have:
* I tend to tunnel vision ideas that are terrible or execute them poorly because of said tunnel vision.
* I don't hone my skills, I usually consider my potentials the same as my actuals, as if I achieved everything already, probably product of ny huge ego.
* I communicate poorly with my boss, I sidetrack into thing he didn't ask
* I'm a mess when it comes to reading documentation online, I have the attention span of a fucking fish.
* I work alone, I have 0 networking status or skills.
* I take huge amounts of time to finish my side projects
* Of all the side projects I started I only finished one, the ones that I couldn't finish usually bevame insabely stressful things, so much and so many that I questioned myself many times if I should be a programmer or not.
* I have little discipline or organization, if I work in more than one thing at a time, i get really anxious and stressed.
I am not saying I'm not competent, I think I am (I'm looking at you imaginary scary recruiter googling this online), I'm just not really proud of myself26 -
So I passed my exams just now! This is one of the first official recognition of being a capable programmer for me which is a very big deal in my case.
One final thing before i could get my diploma was getting my hours signed of my second internship but they're ignoring me. Explained it to my mentor: "oh fuck that guy, I'll sign it tomorrow, you've made the hours and I'm not going to let some cunt get in your way of getting a diploma!
I fucking love my mentor.5 -
2 weeks ago I was writing an `rm -rf --no-preserve-root /` oneliner as a joke - as an answer to a question "I have access to my competitor's server; what should I do?". I was crafting it so that it'd do as much damage to the business (not the server) as it could.
And I accidentally executed it on my work laptop. In the background (with an `&`).
It ran for a good 5-7 seconds on an i7-11850H with an SSD, until I issued a `kill %%`
Good thing it ran as a non-root user. Bad thing - I have no idea what it may have deleted nor whether it touched my /home.
I'm afraid to restart my laptop now :)
whoopsie :)9 -

"Fuck yeah, finally a break, beach, grill, nice. Im not bringing my laptop, theres no way im touching any code."

Well let's do this group rant thing.
I had to build 5 responsive Web applications in 3 weeks. Again Web applications, not websites. I slept a total of 2 hours per night in my car, and would go home every 3 days to shower.
I quit soon after.5 -
Apparently `= NULL` is not a thing in mysql, instead you have to use `IS NULL`... Took me a while to figure out why the fuck my query wasn't returning any results.8

The relentless feeling that slowly has over taken my waking life. The feeling that if I am not coding, learning or becoming better at coding I am wasting my time. I can't even watch movies anymore without reading articles. This is the worst thing about being a Dev, how when you are a dev you are nothing else.
At least for me, not sure how common this feeling is.10 -
So here goes my home setup. The leftmost screen is the first computer screen I ever had about 13 years ago. The right one came next and I upgraded it this year with a monitor arm to make it vertical. The center one is 27" 1080p (1440p was too expensive).
The wooden thing on the left is a ghetto stand for my laptop. Another salvaged thing is the fan on the middle, it's just pushed to a cut usb cable, not even soldered, but it works.
Peripherals are pretty standard: Cheap mechanical keyboard, Logitech g502 and a drawing tablet. My headphones are the shp9500 (best thing I ever bought).
Little by little it came to this and Im pretty happy about it.
PS: Say hi yo my dog.10 -
I fucking hate paperwork. I can't switch to the network team for probably 5 more months because it got lost somewhere. I want to put my degree use!! I'm not doing a damn thing with it at the moment 😭😭😭22

Nice, I just removed my dpkg folder instead of dpkg/lock. Today is the first and only day for this week I can sit at my desk to work and this is first thing I did. And then I whine that I'm stressed and couldn't finish my tasks.
If I were not me, I would slap that-guy.6 -
Networking class. We're learning to configure switches, or at least trying to. A full hour goes by and the thing is not making a single beep. I frustration we lean back. Then my friends sees it. We never plugged in the power cable.6

Hi guys, this is my first rant so bear with me..
Stupid Indian fucking institutes doesn't give a shit about the things we learn in the institute. This curriculum is like from the 90's. I learnt NodeJS recently and I thought wow a new concept, not even my professor knows about it. I must be on top of the world or at least any way near it and then I see these video tutorials on the internet which are posted 2 years ago. OH MY GOD!! The thing is that my department's HOD doesn't know about that and the funny thing is that I'm doing a project under him "SECURITY OF WEB APPLICATIONS" and the only thing he knows is PHP. And FYI I'm not studying in an institute which is oblivious to the outside world. It's called an NIT, an institute of national fucking importance. At the end, I blame myself though. I should have been on myself not being completely dependent on the professors for knowledge.
I could fill the entire text area with the rant.
But then people will start ranting about the rant.
I will be posting more Indian-devRant soon so.. peace till then.
( I bet they don't know about Git/Github too)24 -
Yes! you made a difference.[image]
P.S.
started working at a startup as an intern(android app developer), Most of my work is like debugging the code, new feature implementations.
And the codebase is full of this kind of shit(even worse) plus literally zero documentation(not even for API's), not even a single line of comment in complete project(40K-50K), not any unit test/ UI test.
The funniest thing is when I ask for documentation he(boss | *) said: I am documentation.8 -
I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3

The other day I was looking for my wallet and the first thing that crossed my mind was "Ctrl + F" please tell me I'm not crazy5

Be me, making a self hosted website-blog thing because why not
making the backend: yeah cool, easy, ive been doing this stuff for a while
making a frontend: ehh, some template will do fine, im not that great at js
making an admin page: yay this is actually fun
setting up portforwarding on my router to my pi: fucking piece of shit work already dammit8 -
My new fitbit reminds me take 250 steps each hour. When I do stop and take a walk, I find it helps my productivity, and I feel better. However, I'm not good at keeping to it.
It's always the same story.
"Quiet you, I'll get up and walk once I finish this one thing".
...
Another hour goes by.
If only I could keep to my own convictions.4 -
The best thing about having COBOL in my last internship is not that it opens you a lot of new job opportunities, is the look of fear and respect of your coworkers when you say that you learned it.1

I was building my iOS app in xcode, when I get an error. It was some swift library thing I did not recognize.
Then without changing anything:
Build again.
Error
Build again.
Error
Build again
No errors at all. Run my app and everything works perfectly.6 -
My favorite thing is my nerf gun. In my office different teams are organized in different pods. You never know when a war will break out between the teams, you need to be able to defend yourself! Also not bad for getting someone's attention who has headphones on...3

Oversleeping due to sleep-walking to my phone and turning the alarm off and going back to bed is a thing for me now. Fuck.
Is there an alarm clock where you have to type in different shell commands to complete a given task on Android in order to stop the alarm? If not, I'll have to do something with my Raspberry Pi...22 -
My boss just asked me to participate in a conference call to help an external senior dev implement some stuff/tool into our website.
My boss suspects that he doesn't even know Git...
Let's see how that whole thing will turn out.
My boss told me that he looked at his code and it already looks like an abomination of PHP...
It is enough that my boss usually writes shitty spaghetty code.
I will not sleep well this night.1 -
Last night I compiled my first kernel module!
I'm not talking about a ./configure; make; sudo make install kind of thing...
I wrote, compiled, loaded the module and saw my silly "Hello World!" message on dmesg!
Using some previous experience on embedded I fired up qemu with a fresh buildroot image and the kernel image I just made, thus I can now test and debug without doing kernel changes to my workstation!
So yeah, I'm a little excited :-D4 -
They gave me a file, .php, that was the entire webapp. THE ENTIRE THING IN A SINGLE FILE. It's frustrating that I have to organize this before I even start working on my tasks.
I guess its not super horrible since it's a rookie project but it's still horribly and unnecessarily time consuming.5 -
Over 6000 rants since my last visit! And the app looks quite different upon my return... Vacation is not *just* a good thing :s5
-
One thing I've noticed about devRant is the ratio of web dev/mobile dev posts to database/architecture/big data dev posts. There's A LOT of you web peeps out there, and not enough data dudes, which I guess justifies my constant demand, salary and lack of competition. Just an observation.9
-
Called in on a Saturday... I’d rather have my underwear ride up for the rest of my life than having to deal with your bitch ass not knowing how to run a FUCKING computer.
No, I promise it’s working fine you dense fuck. You just don’t know how to fucking run it. Perhaps instead of calling me in, why not ask your other coworkers how to preform the task that you’re failing to learn.
And the shit thing is, I’ve explained this so many fucking times. It’s not my fault you won’t retain the mother fucking information you cheeky bastard.
STOP FUCKING CALLING ME! - who the fuck even gave you my personal number you fuck!5 -
Stack overflow is overrated
With that I mean that a lot of people think that stack overflow is the best thing that every programmer has and can't live without it. That if stack overflow is down, nobody is able to write a single line without bugs. That 47.24% of a programmers time is spent searching on stack overflow. Sure, it is helpful for finding answers, and some are very good at explaining stuff, but it's not essential. I made an account when I started coding, because it "sure is the most important thing, right?", but the only thing I have done with it is changing the profile picture, because I simply don't use stack overflow that much. When I search my problems on Google, I mostly find the answer on some specific forum for that library I'm using, or more often, in the official documentation for it, no need for stack overflow. I'm not trying to say that it is not useful at all or that it should be taken down because nobody uses it, but that it is not essential in every programmers life.9 -
So, today a client said: "If you are a web developer, well you can make me a damn mobile app. It's the same fooking thing, you just write code and make it go on my device. I want a whatsapp-like app for my company."
I really, really wanted to punch him on his godamn face... At the end I spent tbe rest of the meeting explaining that I don't develop mobile apps since I'm a web developer and that it is NOT THE SAME THING. He went angry and said "Well, I think I'll find a better dev somewhere else. You are a useless one"10 -
Serious considering wiping the Windows 10 partition on my computer.
Only thing keeping me from doing it is the Adobe Suite. Damn it.
If only they made it for Linux, life would be such a blessing.
P.S. : GIMP is not a replacement.16 -
my boss praised me again, for just routine stuff, doing my job. I'm not even doing it too well. he said "oh but it's not about that, it's just that you're doing it". oh. honey... that's a really sad thing to say 😂3

I uh.. I may or may not have just spent the last hour or so disassembling my headphones, only to find that there's batteries inside and the earcups just clip off.

The only thing I'm getting better at with experience is my ability to say upfront that I'm not able to do the requested task.7

The more I look into Windows 11 the more I hate it. There's just 1 (one) more thing that's wrong with it every time I look.
It's a security and ethical nightmare. I almost wish I didn't specialize in computer recovery & cybersecurity.
So thankful that my high-end gaming-built PC is apparently "not compatible" with Windows 11. Oh, you don't want to break my computer and ruin my entire life? That's actually a complement, man.17 -
Bad thing: I spilled booze on my fabrics yet again. I probably shouldn't drink from the couch or the bed anymore.
Good thing: I found out how to disassemble my tablet and removed its cameras.
Bad thing: front cam couldn't be removed without damaging some traces for a coax connection.
Bad thing: during disassembly I noticed significant amounts of corporate "fuck you" and certified enganeering. Like allowing the rubber back plates of the tablet to come off, but not get back on without percussive maintenance!!! FUCKING CERTIFIED PIECES OF SHIT!!!
Good thing: even after a lot of Tappy-tap-tap, the tablet still works without a problem. Hopefully I can now save some others from the shitstains by posting about it on the XDA thread 🤔
Overall verdict: FUCK!!!12 -
What the real fuck?! My phone's storage is decreasing automatically. I am not doing a fucking thing! And it's still going on. Only 145 MB of free storage is left. My phone is hanging a lot and apps are crashing. I can't do a fucking thing on my phone!
I checked storage in settings. Everything looks fine. But the Misc. This fucking thing is holding 9.85 GB, and when I open it, it shows only 1.9 GB. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!
AAAAAAAAAA!!

The story of how I stumbled onto devrant:
Not long ago I was struggling with visual studio and did not know what to think, do or say. The only thing I wanted to do was scream while I banged my laptop against the wall. Just before doing that I googled "fuck Vs fuck Microsoft" and I was introduced to devrant. Something about reading the rqnts of frustrated developers made me calm (It also made me laugh). So what I really want to say is: thank you devrant for saving my money.3 -
Simple sidescroller made in Unity featuring a little green pixel dragon.
And the fun thing is that the dragon is awfully similar to the Docusaurus logo. (see below image)
So... what?
FB stole my idea. (lol)
And I am not releasing my dragon cuz people will shout at ME who seems to plagiarised FB.3 -

Turning my 27" monitor vertically was the smartest thing I did all year.
There's so much space now that just using it makes me happy!
That only drawback is the 1080p horizontal resolution which is not enough for many sites to fit without zooming out.
I feel like I will soon persuade myself to buy a 4K monitor...4 -
I just finished upgrading a dotnet core 2.2 WebApi + Console App to dotnet core 3.1 and it was a very smooth process with very minor changes to my code.
Not a rant, just posting because it is the first nice thing that has happened for me in a while now.4 -
Me, programmer(not employed yet): you know what is crazy about coding test? I can easily do manually what test said, but teaching it to computer is surprisingly hard.
My brother, teacher(not graduated yet): I can easily solve middle school problems too, but teaching to kids is hard part. It seems like we do similar thing.2 -
Code is not the only thing I do. Sad but true.
Sure, sometimes I just want to scream "JUST LET ME CODE", but internal hackathons and PO 1-on-1s make me feel like there's a meaning beyond my 34 open tabs.2 -
I work in a bitcoin startup , my fucking boss really wants everyone to use ubuntu because of security and all , the bad thing is i am the only guy who knows how to install and deal with it , so when any one joins or has some problem he always bugs me and the thing is i am an android developer not a sys admin and now he fucking want to get 2 factor in ubuntu desktops when they log in16

I have been trying to understand why my student's code isn't working just to find this piece of code. Checking out code early in the morning is definitely not my thing.3

I work in a team where I am the only person not belonging to the main company. We have been a year and 3 months working together and they still don't realise that I have very restricted access to many of the things related to the project. So every now and then, something breaks and we have a meeting where they all tell me how disappointed they are at me because I was responsible for that and then I try to show them how I could not possibly even access the information where it is stated that I was responsible for that thing. Or that that thing even existed.
And then, the move the conversation to why they won't pay for my ramping up. This is not ramping up, assholes, this is you allowing me to access the information I need to do my job as you want!
I really don't know what to do... Other than looking for another job1 -
What was the most stupid thing interview ever do to you?
My side of story. He (interviewer, also a developer) try to convince me that JavaScript and Java are the same thing. Which we all know that is not...
He said "I can't hire someone who don't know basic of computer science , this is basic that JavaScript is from Java"
(Isn't ecmascript or something?)
Saying JavaScript is From Java is a wrong statement. There are differences between having a DICK and Being a DICK.5 -
I probably just found out that a table in our db has two columns for the same thing. And yes, the numbers are non-trivial and do not always match each other. My senior is now looking into it and it seems hilariously painful.2

My Grandma: Go with your aunt to help her buy a refrigerator.
Me: But I don't know anything about refrigerator
My Grandma: But you spend all your time on computer, and it is just technology

My Grandma: And I thought you were smart
Me: 😑2 -
Now on most websites I'm not one to want likes, normally I couldn't care.
But on this website, one single thing makes me want lots of likes.
Is it stickers? Nope.
Maybe it's that sweet stress ball? Try again!
Just want all that attention? Not for me.
I just really want my avatar to sit on an exercise ball.1 -
Recently not a single fucking thing is going my way...... Every goddamn new thing i try, screws me over in some way... And when I finally think somethings working, I get fucked more than a highway hooker.1
-
So TripleByte ended in rejection though they gave very detailed feedback and specific areas and even resources to look at. 👍
But it seems I'm not going to be able to escape algorithms in interviews so I'm not getting a new job anytime soon, even in tech.
So the only thing left to try in order to get my cake seems to be joining an open source project. -
Who's the dumbass that decided you can't delete your PayPal account at all unless your balance is $0?
I am not giving you my card information for the $0.18 balance I have. For God sakes, I don't even bend over to pick that up if I see it on the ground.
It's one thing if it were like $100 or even $10. But it's eighteen fucking cents. Not even a a quarter of a fucking dollar.
At least make me put in my password and answer a security question or some shit, not straight up remove the option to delete it.
Fucking ridiculous.21 -
FUCK YOU Visual Studio, didn't you ever hear about asynchronous behavior? like WHY THE HELL you have to freeze every single thing to complete a shitty task, I just need to copy/open file..
Microsoft, Xamarin, and MAC Agent.. WHAT FUCKING POSSIBLY COULD GO WRONG.
{AND NO, MY LAPTOP IS NOT SHIT, this happens only with shitual studio}2 -
So I'm planning on ditching Google Play Store. Last step in my anti-Google action (apart from completely cleaning my old Gmail accounts)! I'm barely using it anymore anyways.
Only thing is, I need to find an alternative market. Not an easy journey :)7 -
When my kids would not seriously injure themselves (scrape, bruise, etc) I would suggest we cut it off. They would respond, "NO DAD!"
Now, I go to the doctor because my dentist found something growing on my uvula. My doctor sits me down and says, "Lets cut it off. The whole thing. You will snore less." I am like "...okay!" Then it reminded me of what I used to tell my kids.1 -
Learning through documentation.
I learned one thing.... That how I can copy paste any thing in my code and comment it as "magic happens here do not touch."
Yeah thats my code learned from documentation (image below ) -
Me: "Omg, I'm so not sorry you didn't get a response to your 2:00am text sent to my private phone number about that super duper not important thing that a four year old could solve... but my girlfriend gave me a wrist band thingy that puts my phone on silent whenever it thinks I'm sleeping."
Product Owner: "And you can't set it up properly!? Your title says `señor software engineer` for god's sake!"
Me: "Yeah, it does. This is a hardware issue, though."
...is what I told her and she bought it. 🤷♂️2 -
You know how my 'about' here says I create features from bugs?!? Well if you didn't before, now you do.. :P
Anyhow, today the most bizzare thing happened.. Customer played 'reverse uno card' on me..

They reported a feature missing on uat env, when in fact I fixed a bug they have on prod..
Not sure how I should feel about this, but it sure made my day! (: I just hope they will not open a bug report for this missing bug..4 -
Just wanted to fix one little thing. Ended up with 20 commits for 35 other little things, three branches and realizing at the end of the day that the one little thing is still not fixed. Story of my life.3

Interesting thing. Ya know how when turning on your phones hotspot it has to verify that you are in fact allowed to use a hotspot. Well if you have Unlimited Data like myself, hotspotting is not allowed. HOWEVER, if you spam the hotspot button, it after several tries, gives up and lets you hotspot. THIS IS MY LITTLE TRICK. NO BUG BOUNTY. BESIDES, youd need my carrier.10

Not gonna lie I have toxic people in my life and I have caught myself in multiple situations where I behaved differently, did or did not do something just because they were near.
Whenever these people are gone it’s just the most beautiful thing to be able to relax (also in my mind).
It’s crazy what other people do with us and how we can exaggerate all these feelings and emotions. The best thing I can do is to get rid of this toxicity in my life and move on.
Anybody else or is it just me?1 -
Best thing about the flood here is Houston is getting to work from home for 3 weeks straight. Getting to get my home office in order and avoid traffic is awesome. Not really a rant. Not really sorry.1

A senior member of the Business just came to my desk:
“Hey are we still cool to launch that thing in Monday?”
Me - “eeehhhhhh”
The feeling of sick in my stomach has not yet passed. -

Fucking covid.
Three days before I had a week trip to meet some clients / see old friends... Fucking covid.
My gf tested positive just now, and I tested negative, but taking into account 3 days incubation time, the most sensible thing is not to travel.4 -
My dev days consist on coding shit that I am really not interested in(web design)
What gets me through them is getting to my home office when I can continue to fuck around with Machine Learning, my guitar or the shit that does interest me....
.......also...listening to Nothing But Thieves is about the one thing that keeps me from losing my shit at work...5 -
My fucking pixel XL just broke. Fuck me, fuck this and fuck every fucking thing
I hope I'm not stuck with this broke ass piece of shit I used to use.4 -
Not sure if I'm going crazy or my spacebar is full of static 🤔 is that even a thing?
Anytime I move my hand pass the spacebar I get this tingly feeling.....
In 30 years... this is a new!5 -
Xperia Flashtool? More like Xperia Fucktool. Why? BECAUSE THE FUCKING THING CAN'T FLASH MY PHONE. FIRST YOU SPIT INTO MY FACE WHEN NOT DETECTING A COMPLETELY FINE .FTF, THEN YOU SHIT ON MY HEAD BY SAYING THAT THE .SIN FILE IS INVALID, AND THEN YOU PISS INTO MY MOUTH BY JUST REBOOTING THE DEVICE! Old version works fine tho.3

I'M A SENIOR DEVELOPER NOT A BUSINESS ANALYST...
IF YOU GIVE ME SOME CRAPPY LEGACY CODE THAT SOMEONE RANDOMLY DECIDED TO USE, THE ONLY WAY I CAN UNDERSTAND IT IS BY RUNNING IT AND REVERSE ENGINEERING THE "BUSINESS LOGIC".
ADD THAT WITH BAD INPUTS... THE ONLY THING YOUR DOING IS WASTING MY TIME..
JUST BURN THE WHOLE THING AND GIVE ME THE REQUIREMENTS OF WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT....
It feels like I've been fucking a pig all week...
Oh and now my team agrees and will look to get the actual requirements from the business...
This feels like a hallow victory.... As that was the first thing I told them to do.... -
My employer is a good person. He is very money-minded, but since he is a very good person, that's not the only thing in his mind.
I'm happy to work here ☺️3 -
Trying my luck for an A rank conference in like 3 months. Things are not done and anxiety will end me before then. 😑
Can't these stupid robots do their own thing without me and get published on my behalf? Shit is tiring! Arghhhhh5 -
I may not be a dev... (learning in my off time though, best thing ever) but I have been responsible for the computer system validation, requirements definitions and planning of a new piece of software that will have a major increase in effeciency for a division consisiting of over half our companies employees.
For months it has been a painful process. I have had night terrors, immense pressure on my head all the while thinking we are getting to that final goal (live deployment), and the light at the end of the tunnel has just seemed to be getting further and further away... Like a donkey chasing a carrot on a stick.
After all the grey hairs, stress and drinking I am finally going to deploy this thing to the live environment tomorrow. Funny thing is its the part of this process that managers are stressing about and I am here like... Oh wow my Friday just got a whole lot better1 -
One thing I learned early on was...
"If the bug is not where you are looking...look somewhere else."
I just spent 2 hours looking at 50 lines of code pulling my hair out why it wasn't working. Guess what...those lines were correct. The bug was somewhere else.4 -
Here is the finished print!

My reward for understanding this thing is an early night. Time for bed :) remind me not to submit this assignment with the comments still in it. As I have done before.3

It's almost 4 on a Friday and my coworker just left early. The only thing before leaving was to tell my boss about a problem in production...
Leaving me to fix it...
"Hey, I just heard about a problem in production. Can you fix it before you go?"
Not cool dude... Not cool.5 -
I would say my biggest insecurity is not getting (enough) useful straightforward feedback from my boss about how I work.
I have a tendency to take a bit longer than others, but deliver code that rarely has to be fixed.
Some of it may appear overengineered but it really isn't... I just like it clean and not hacky.
There are times my boss seems like telling me subconciously that I take too long for my stuff, but then again, he is really happy when we deliver a big thing to a customer and it just works, without any bugs or negative feedback.
It sometimes drives me nuts. 😅2 -
coolest thing I ever built?
My career..
except it's not cool, and not sure if it's a career at all.. not so good on a thing, just some knowledge here and there..
now I am sad about my life -
A client asked for a tool for his website. So I built it for him and he was satisfied with the thing, cause it did what it should. Nevertheless I was not, because it kind of had a messy backend. I made it working and charged my time. Now I am wondering if I should rebuild the thing to satisfy my code quality for free, or just keep that thing as ugly as it is....
What your opinion on this?6 -
spent 3 weeks with not more than 20 hours sleep per week on programming a mobile Chat Application. after finally 1 more week of bug fixing and testing and redesigning UI, App works like a charm! Most beautiful thing I ever created, my close friends are all astonished.
Happily I uploaded it on Playstore, 2 weeks later -> no downloads :(12 -
I am so 😢🤒😡 right now. I applied for a remote job, so they gave me an assessment and the language was c++. The funny thing is that c++ was not in my resume.
So I decided to explore c++. "I don't know what the fuss is, C++ is not so hard". It was very easy for me to grasp. It took me two days to understand it.
Then I did one of those online test and I scored 58/60.
Now I went back to take the assessment test on C++ but lo and behold the assessment is now on Rest API.
But Rest API is also not on my resume. They are not assessing me on my strengths like Java or kotlin or python or my my lesser strengths like C# or JavaScript.9 -

Guys, I had my first REAL developer interview today. Without jinxing myself, I'd like to say it went really good. We discussed the companys upcoming projects, what they expect from a new developer, etc. but some thing that bothers me about it is there was never any discussion about my expected compensation. I'm not sure if this is common or not, but we'll see.3 -
How about "nope"?
I have never been to an interview.
I would like to work in an IT company to get money(such wow) besides of my college time.
The thing is that... well... I'm not really sure if I can do this since I have 0 experience with interviews. I can not imagine the situation :)9 -
How is it a thing that developing a desktop app nowadays requires an enormous amount of RAM? I stared working on an electron project and the whole thing takes up 3-4 GB of RAM when running, and that does not factor in my IDE or anything else.
But the packaged app does not go over 400mb, although we have had memory leaks in the past10 -
Fuck arch.
I know what you're thinking
"arch isn't that bad he's overreacting"
WELL I'M NOT OVERREACTING!
Thanks to me trying to install Arch i cant get my laptop to boot. It just say some thing about network boot failing. I cant go into BIOS either. It doesn't work! I cant even boot from usb!! It still just say some thing about network boot failing, shows some weird black screen with a black bar at the top left and after a while shows some thing about network boot failing again and that repeats9 -
I'm looking for a distro that is more modern than Ubuntu 16.04, not the shithole that Ubuntu 17.10 is and works, practically, out of the box with my xps 9560.
this 17.10 update thing is driving me nuts. the plot twist is.. if I don't get it set up before tomorrow I'll just switch to windows.17 -
In the past months, every week or so, boss asked me:
"So what are you doing now?"
My typical reply was "finished thing and then gonna move on the oculus project to update that"
To which, he always replied with: "Nah, leave it, focus on all the other platforms"
Today we have to send the Oculus version to a big client and yet nothing is updated because it never was a main thing to update.
I will surely fuck something's up on this app, but not gonna take the blame. -
I am starting to get really annoyed by shitty devs and tech leads from other teams that ask me to fix urgently a "problem" with my project they rely on, but turns out they did not even debug the fucking thing in the first place to understand where the problem comes from.
Turns out someone used the wrong parameters on his duct taped jenkins CI and instead of finding the reason for the failure, he just assumed my code did not work.
This is the last time I'm helping you fucks before a release while I am on holidays in my country. Worst thing is you guys are paid twice my salary in US dollars but you still can't code and debug for shit.
How about telling me truth when I asked you guys if everything was working fine before I took my vacations? Do you fucking test your shit for fuck's sake? Nah you guys just suck ass.
I will turn off my computer when off work from now on and uninstall slack and emails from my cell phone. These guys are not competent enough to use those tools properly.3 -
One of the executives at my work insisted we rush to get a project done back in January so that he could use it immediately for auditing purposes.
Just pulled a report and found out he hasn't used a single thing we built for him not even ONCE since we pushed it. He hasn't even logged in. So livid.2 -

I've only been here for 1 month for my new position in Ops, and I already miss software development!
All I do everyday is just typing commands on the terminal.
If I am feeling fancy, I may create a script or two (that's the closest thing I have to writing code).
I hope I can get more interesting thing to do in the future. If not I can't see myself doing this in long term. It's OK for occasional tasks or added responsibility but I don't want to do it as my main job.11 -
About to quit my job.. looking for another one in a different city for my lady..

Did not understand why people posted so much on here till I had to argue with my "partner" product manager that SVG icons are better than pure CSS icons, and yes there is such thing as animated SVG, and no I'm not a designer to create fancy icons for you just because they "are actually code" you twat1

Guys need your opinion. How bad of a thing is it if I change my job in just a year. Stuck in a toxic team. I’m a Class of 2020 undergrad, joined my current firm for the’brand’ but my experience and expectations have been polar opposites. I’m not able to put myself 100% behind to look for other jobs as I keep worrying that switching this early would hurt my profile long term.
Just wanted to hear what yall think.10 -
Me:
-Lack of experience
-slow learner/fast learner
-not really a team player
-always keep a positive attitude
-but when I started doing smthing, I'll finish it.
-willing to learn
I wonder if anyone would still hire me to their company.. Let me know.. I fucking hate my workplace and the owner. You hire me for doing smthing else, and you always told me to do smthing else that is not even related to my job. I'm not your fucking ass cleaner. = = you shit on that thing, you clean it yourself. I find a random bush more amusing and interesting than whatever's happening around me. -
2 weeks ago my boss: “This are the requirements, make fronted and backend”
Yesterday we finally delivered the project and today he changed all the requirements. I have to remake everything, the only thing that will not change is the database because he made it. And it is the single source of garbage.3 -
as you can see my naive people; even dfox/trogus started to question whether or not they have done the right thing by chasing a degree that has no value in the real world. just understand that when you see someone who works at a job, he works there not because he has a degree but because he has the knowledge and skills to get the work done4

I am pretty sure my phone started listening to me...
A few days ago I downloaded a app similar to Craigslist but a little more modern. THE ABSOLUTE FIRST THING MY EYES SEE IS A CAR. NOT ANY OLD CAR. BUT THE SAME YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL OF THE CAR I OWN. May I also mention I’m on vacation on the OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE COUNTRY?!?
Wtf.17 -
Worked my ass off for every single thing, gave everything I had, didn't care about my friends too in some situations

My eyes are opening to a sad reality. It's not just software - people in every industry are as bad at their work as they can get away with.
On the bright side it means that a person who excels at one thing has a shot at excelling at others. Mediocrity is everywhere.6 -
Just opened a project that I'll be working on for work, first thing I notice is C++ like code formatting, which hurts my eyes (keep in mind this is Java)
But then decompiled Hybris classes came at me with not only that, but three newlines between methods.
I fear what I have yet to see...4 -
Why the heck does every big "giant" wants to promote their own framework? It almost feels like politics of the tech industry. It's not about using the "best", but using "our own". Everyone wants to claim their territory however ridiculously small and unimportant it is. So, I'll have to replace Bootstrap with some framework client designated after completing the project, and see what will be broken.
The good thing about working in an agency is you get to work on such a variety of projects, which can also be the fucking damn thing. Heck I'm not looking to work in an agency for my next job.2 -
Hardest thing for me as Team leader is to teach people in my team, that task is done, when unit tests are written, pull request is created, approved and merged.
Not when their code compiles for a first time.1 -
Waiting for my interview at a big firm.
Nervous.
If I am accepted here, I will have to break a 1 year contract with my previous company. I just feel it is not the right thing to do but this is a very good oppurtunity for me.2 -
I was wondering why my tutor needs a whole ass week to accept my MR.
Today he rejected one, so I got a chance to look at whatever he's doing.
He's checking line by line every single test I make and creates a variable for each dumb thing.

I don't even know why you would take a week to accept a merge request when all you're doing is creating variables for things you use only once. I'm not even mad, I'm not ranting, I just need to know why would you do such a thing17 -
I have spent 5 days in Microsoft Excel trying to do my budget planner. I struggled a lot and too much Googling. Google started to show reCaptcha whenever I search for something after that.
Yesterday, I spent 3 hours and got my fully functionality web based budget planner done.
I don't know if I did the right thing or not but am really happy and I have the full control. -
Today, my fellows not a rant, but a glimp of blissfully sent client from heaven. Doesn't complain at all. He is not a fuckin jerk, he just trusts my judgment both in code and looks. No one will ask me to adjust some petty thing for some obscure mental fixations! Join me in this party!4

I used a 8 years old phone as a Wi-Fi adapter for my new computer, while I got the cable.
Not the hackiest thing ever but the hackiest I can think of now.2 -
TLDR; College group projects suck, not because the work, but the people in your group will make or break you. Fuck having 1 week to do this assignment.
Sometimes working with other students on group projects is great, they actually know how to create a merge a git branch. I've had a decent partner once during my 3 years at university so far. This last project takes the cake on idiots I've worked with...so far at least... It was me and two others, we'll call them Thing1 and Thing2 for now. Anyway so the 3 of us had a week to implement a very rudimentary Invoice system; fine, easy enough. We divided up the work and 'started'.
All seemed to be going well, no complaints or cries for help all week. Until 4 hours before we submit the assignment; Thing 1 sends me a DM saying all of Thing 1's work is useless full of bugs and just shouldn't be integrated with the rest of the code. Umm fine? I guess? wtf?! why did this have to come out last minute?! We could have explained to Thing 1 what's going on and gotten him/her up to speed on everything. Believe it or not, I was sorta ok with this? I mean thing 1 hadn't pushed anything to the repo yet. I mean literally nada, Thing 1 is a collaborator on the repo that has contributed nothing. Seeing as how Thing 1 was contributing nothing I had already started to cover our ass a began Thing 1's work.
That's not even what's pissed me off... at least thing 1 had the gall to message me to say "idk..wtf is going on...continue without me". Thing 2 arguably made my time with the project worse. His code was nothing but garbage...every time...literally spent more time deciphering his incoherent bullshit more than I did rewriting his mess. I shit you not he wrote out this method, and tells the group he's "finally got it fixed and working":
public static float updateTotal(float newValue)
{
total = updateTotal(newValue);
return total;
}
How tf did he test this to see if its working?! I'm a novice and can already see the infinite loop here. You called your method within that method's own definition, what did you expect to happen.
I managed to get things 75% working and turned in 5 mins before the cut off.
Thankfully Thing 1 emailed the Proff as well, hopefully he won't tank my grade too bad. I'm so glad to be done with this assignment, fingers crossed there's no more group work.4 -
Can I please rant? So my Acer Computer started misbehaving and turned my firewall off by itself a few weeks ago. After that, the dumb thing decided to revoke my admin rights, and since I was the ONLY admin, I have zilch admin privileges, can't download any apps, and can't make any new user profiles.
How in the living fu*k am I supposed to do my schoolwork and homework for school on a piece of sh*t computer I paid lots of money for? I have tried the built-in admin trick, and it did NOT work. My other user account I can NOT open, as Windows 10 states that "you need an app to open this".6 -
Data Science MSc instead of Computer Science. Or realising that my first 4 years of work was as a Data Scientist and I should have asked to have my job title reflect that. Skipping faang, at least relatively early in my career (that's a whole thing I want to write about but not rn). Not spending a year out of work due to health problems & nearly dying.
It could have been better, but I've enjoyed it.4 -

So, you all may remember my rant about my visual impairment. This dude applied the UNIX philosophy to glasses: They do one thing, and one thing well. He actually calls them "task-specific glasses" but come on now, that's the OG UNIX concept!
No, I will not have to have surgery - supposedly. The glasses he builds are ~$25,000. He said that when we go over spring break, he'll determine if we can go from 98% to 100% positive. If this can be pulled off, my life could be forever changed, for the better, hopefully...3 -
One thing that I'm not that big a fan of in Kubuntu is how I can't just scale one of my screens. I need to scale my 4k monitor to 1.5 the size otherwise it will all be too small. However my 1080p monitor also gets scaled, which is really doesn't since it makes everything wayy too big.
However, when I use display scaling my apps actually fucking scale. Meanwhile on fucking Windows they haven't figured that out yet

Back in my study days software dev was this weird almost magical thing where you tell a electrocuted stone in a fantasy language what to do.
Now after working in the field for 4 years it has lost its shine and I mostly connect software dev to work grind and people who complain even though they just don’t read.
Maybe the time is near to look into a new field of work. Maybe it’s just not my kind of work to earn money. It’s not even like my higher ups are unsatisfied with my work. My current boss complimented my work a lot in our meeting last week.
Is this normal for developers to feel/experience?3 -
I see people ranting about first going to google.com and then searching. The browsers at my workplace won't let you do a search in the address bar, not even in the search field that says Google.
So now I do the same thing at home and realize how stupid it is milliseconds later.
Not frustrating at all. -
I feel like an imposter sometimes but then I look at some of my colleagues. I'm not really sure whether that's a good thing or not.1

Wonder if I’m alone on this:
I have habits.
Always use the same cup, with very same amount of coffee grounds. Same four presses with the same fingers on the coffee machine.
Same way I place the cups in my desk. Same way I carry my notebook, same way I dry my hands. Same exact spot I place my card on the rfid reader. Use same elevator, same locker. God.
You name it, I do it on my own particular way.
Thing is, that I think about it. I do it consciously. I am just happier if things stay the way they are. It not just muscle memory thing.
Not judging here, just wonder if there’s people who can relate as much 🧐7 -

Holy shit sometimes I hate my job. Current assignment: translate a C++ COM class to C#. Requirement: interface should not change. I ask the other team using this interface to ask me any questions so I can address their concerns. First FUCKING thing they ask for: a diagram explaining how to access the interface. For. Fuck. Sake. The goddamn thing is not changing. At all. I have said that to every stakeholder every time. It's a changed reference and a tweak to some calls to make them .Net calls. Why am I redocumenting something that was documented years ago?2
-
I wish I had that self esteem a lot of my classmates posses.
I'm working for my prof, I've kinda made my very first step into the industry. Somewhere deep inside I know I'm talented and smart. However, every day I am worried that I'm not good enough and it will be noticed at the job soon.
Is that common thing in Dev community? Just want to know opinions7 -
Any company that ENFORCES you to have a college degree so you can get hired - is a failed company in my eyes and not worth any of my time.
I would not accept to contribute a thing to that company regardless of the salary i would be paid.
Same goes for all and everyone else: if an open source project were to require a contributor to have a college degree so he can contirbute, is a failed project.
ANYONE and ANYTHING who requires a college degree - has already failed.14 -
I am embrassed.. :(
Situation was..
It was 3-4 months ago I written the process but now client was saying it is not working so I just need to update value in array..
I spent 2-3 hours everything was good..
only in the statement where I am assigning the value is not working.
I was like dude wtf call your senior why its not working .. everything is correct.. then suddenly my eyes catch the rubbish thing I did..
this is what I used mistakenly for assignment "=="

Colleague: The user said this [Total line] is not the average she expected.
Me: Okay? But she knows that averages are weighted?
Colleague: I'm gonna call her.
... 30 minutes fast forward
Colleague: Okay she wants an average, but she wants us to divide it by something else.
Me: Okay? But she knows an average is the sum of one thing divided by the sum of another thing and not just anything?
Colleague: Yeah, she said she wants it to be kinda this in relation to that.
Me: Okay, so rather some percentage value?
Colleague: To be honest, she just wanted to reproduce this old Excel formula.
God has left this planet ... and I admire my colleague for not completely freaking out in the face of the user.3 -
I have this thing where I really want to code something, but I don't know where to start. So I end up alt-tabbing through vs code, r/nosleep, facebook, and r/mechanicalkeyboards and then cursing my 'lack of time' as the reason I can not make any cool stuff.2

Did a website for my uncle. I'm not a web dev and I don't normally do this kind of thing for family but he's putting me up for two weeks. So he asked how difficult websites are, basically just needed me to drop some stuff in a template and host it. Not a problem. The man then brings me a printed piece of paper with changes he wants.... No copy paste for me...2

My childhood basically. Saved up all my money to buy Pokémon games. I had one that was red tho. The amount of hours I spent on this thing... If not thousands of hours... Tens of thousands...
Then moved to Minecraft, and that's how I got coding 😇 (batch but still)5 -
as most of you are aware of my internet issue (still not working), I came to know an amazing thing.
"there are many wonderful women live in my building. some are beautiful, some are tired, some are puzzled, some are young, some are old, some are sad...."
I didnt knew this untill I got disconnected.2 -
Current boss is best boss.
Seriously though, he's a great guy. He has a lot of knowledge technology-wise, especially in electronics and will explain things to you without tiring if you don't understand them.
He lets me run my thing which is cool and letting me run too freely/not taking enough time is probably the only thing I'd criticize.
He seems to have a similar mindset to mine which makes it (most times) enjoyable to work with him. I like him personally - though I'm sometimes not sure whether he gets my somewhat weird humour. -
I told my client i cannot do every shitty thing you say and change it again and again whenever your mood swings and it wastes lot of time doing unwanted things even if you pay me.
I m not guilty. -
The thing I really wish for is devrant posts not to be visible when i look up things on ddg, because i wanna rant about stuff but they are so exact that it would take 2 nanoseconds to find my user here.4

C'mon, I'm making all the logic and only ask you to make the site look better than my plain html structure. Please do your thing, because the lonely "Slightly improved layout" commit is not helping very much

I have homework for tomorrow, so when i get home i say to myself "right, let's get this homework bs over with". What really happens is i sit down at my pc, power on my VM and keep on tweaking and improving my simple python browser. A few hours later it's already 9PM and i havn't started with my homework. So, it's now 10:30PM and I'm writing a pressentation about traveling and browsing devRant at the same time.
Not getting a lot done. I guess homework isn't my thing....2 -
Well, tried to install Ubuntu on my other personal laptop today.
Never have I wanted to use Linux so bad and not been able to. Why oh fucking why must I get this error, and the shittiest thing is I have no clue where to start.35 -

The only thing I am waiting in 2019 is this. Not new phones, not new OSs, not new apps, not new digital currency, not new sex toy, not new God Of War, not new Game of Thrones. Just this 3rd installment of my favorite game.

Fuck business networking meetings.
Having to go as a representative of our company was not my most wished for thing...
But hey, free drinks and meeting and talking to one of the devs there saved me the annoyance of having to participate in a business circle-jerking for 30 minutes.4 -
IIS curse you and your nuances!
I launch my local web application (which was working fine) and now get CORS errors and 404 not found. Wtf. I clean the solution rebuild, same thing. Then I restart my PC and try again. Same thing.
Then I use Firefox instead if chrome and it magically works. Wtf!

make some projects that keep me going so I can quit job and really focus on them without weird pressure from outside. If its not my day, it happenes. If I have **that** idea at 2AM Im not bothered to wake to job and just write it, than refactor it so it's more of "proper" thing and release new feature/thingy
I have so much ideas piled up and so little time ;-;

Today I noticed I did a very bad thing. My boss gave us $300.00 bonus for christmas. On 30/12/16 (our pay day), the accounts clerk said that our boss will deduct the $300.00 bonus that he gave us for christmas. Which was not true, he didn't deduct it, he included it in the payslip clearly. Without asking question or even looking at the payslip, I have started to insult about my boss to my friends. That was very bad.
I wish god will forgive me.
PS: Please don't comment "404 - God not found."7 -
How the fuck do Jr devs end up doing things someone specifically asks not to do.!!!!!
Fucks timelines up
So I asked my Jr Dev to leave a feature as it might not be required in this release and rather concentrate on the thing that is gonna make this release work , the “SAVE” button.
I mean how had is it to understand,
This dude goes ahead and “utilises” days on the thing that isn’t gonna be released(a dropdown) , and no, the dropdown still doesn’t work.
I understand the spirit of solving the bugs first. But what’s the point of solving it if it doesn’t fucking “save”
P.S. I’ve done this too as a Jr Dev :p7 -
I'm living a daily drama with my own head lately. I was hired like two and a half months ago as a junior programmer and it is my first real job, in addition to 2 internships (the last one was in the advertising agency, and after a month I started to search a new job and warned my boss that I wanted to quit, because it was kind of a painful job and I was not happy at all because I was not working with programming).
The thing is that I do not know what they expected from me in this current job, and I still can not say. Am I being enough? Am I a disappointment? Everyone there is so experienced and good at what they do, and I was just used to being "the guy" where I studied that it was some sort of shock when I realized that I had to get way better even for a junior job. I do not feel productive as I wanted and sometimes I feel like I'm a total disaster and I'm not made to work with the only thing I could say "I'm made for this".
I might be overreacting this, but I just wanted to say this somewhere and I'm thankful I have devRant now. I could talk to my superiors or my boss about this, but I'm so used to get there and focus on my tasks that I'm always forgetting.3 -
The only thing that sometimes bothers me about having IT knowledge (specially now that I'm officially an IT Engineer graduate) is that I still have friends that can't do simple things that they asked me when I was at highschool.
"My computer is not working", " I can't install this game", "My computer doesn't start".
Since I'm okay with helping others, I always try to help. The thing is that everytime I help is always something I google at the moment. And most of times is simple problems that don't even need to be googled2 -

We had our first "real" sprint planning yesterday. This was a very superficial planning session, as my manager is, by the looks of it, not to keen on the whole "new process thing". Probably because it's not his way of doing things... or simply more simply put - this way round means he'll need find some new ways to crawl up the CTOs ass!
So glad I'm leaving! -
Network (people not infrastructure)
My first programming job was because of someone I knew in college worked there. Strangely he also got me my fourth programming job.
My fifth job was a recruiter. First time that ever worked. But it does work.
The biggest thing to remember that in an interview you are selling yourself. So you need to understand a little of sales and marketing. -
Giving a tensorflow workshop and the thing people struggle the most is the Linear Algebra behind it... it is only gradients in tensor and some matrix multiplication.
My recommendation is: do you want to work with Deep Learning algorithms? Y'all need Linear Algebra, not PhD, just a bit! -
Best thing about DevRant is: I have 2nd job that's not a developer company and all my colleges doesn't understand a jack shit about code and the culture. But worst of all is that everyone there is "shoulder spy's.... So i can feel safe when i surf DevRant during the breaks and enjoy my breaks with DevRant2

man you can tell some of these course selling companies are poorly managed (or rather, perhaps NOT managed) when you have to do the same thing over and over again for over TWO YEARS

Just had my first job interview for backend dev position. Hopefully, it went well. Not that much technical questions but the interviewer sure did verified all the things I wrote on my cv. Good thing I included my side projects, that way we have a topic to talk about. Hope ill get the offer. Yaaaaas!!! -
So I’m writing this random number generator app just because so many apps charge you for this simple thing and posted my progress somewhere else. And this guy just commented: you can do it in python in 2 lines

A recruiter contacted me asking my curriculum (sent), then he sent me some emails before calling me. After some minutes, he said I was not good for the position. But that thing was written on the first line of my cv. Maybe he is not good to read.

Received my first recruitment message on LinkedIn today. Generic as fuck "hey your profile looks nice, we have dis thing for you, come take a looksie".
Went ahead and read the whole thing, started laughing while reading requirements:
- own a degree in CS or related field: re-starting college next week
- extensive experience with automation processes: uuuh... I can write bash scripts and gulp tasks, how's that?
- extensive experience with Java, Angular, Selenium and Protractor: sure. Spent two weeks tinkering with those tools. Pretty much an expert already
- two years of experience: not even 6 months into my first job
And some other nonsense
Job would be in a very nice city, extended family lives nearby, actually a nice position. Too bad I am not looking for a job and my classes start on Monday 😂
But hey, at least people are looking at my profile! Yay!3 -

I’m feeling a bit stuck at work recently. I have a new department head and he keeps periodically asking me to do things that are very much not the normal responsibility of my role. These are always very simple things, things I am certainly capable of doing, but should fall outside of my purview. We even have documented methodologies indicating this sort of thing is not the sort of thing I’m expected to be responsible for. The trouble is, I’m not sure if when he’s asking me to do this it’s because he’s still new and not completely up to speed on who does what, or if this is a situation where he is The Boss and if he’s telling me to do it then now it is my responsibility, if not permanently, at least on these specific occasions. I’m also disinclined to just run with it without saying anything because then it really will become my responsibility, and there are good reasons why it currently is not.
I am having difficulty thinking of a way to bring this up that doesn’t sound like I’m refusing to do it. On the one hand, it’s not my job, but I also know that going around saying “that’s not my job” is not appropriate. The situation is not quite that I don’t have the authority to do the task, but that’s closer to the type of reasoning for why my role isn’t responsible for the thing, and it’s always restricted to people in a different role. Part of the internal rationale was a sort of “too many cooks in the kitchen” situation in the past, but there are also other logical reasons why staff in my role are not intended to be involved.
I’m also hesitant to push back at all since I can’t tell if the boss is coming from a place of not knowing or one of reassigning. I don’t want to seem difficult (but also reallllly don’t want this added to my plate). I don’t know the new department head well enough to guess whether it’s more likely a misunderstanding vs a change in policy. I’m struggling with finding the words for how to bring it up without sounding like I am saying “that’s not my job”. Is this the sort of thing that is better handled in the moment, or waiting for a time separate from when he’s making the request to talk about it more generally? Help!1 -
i've been informed by my friend group that i'm the only person to consistently hit issues with not having the skill to do a project, go do other projects to gain the skills, then *come back* to the initial project.
how is this not a common thing2 -
I tried...
I failed...
I give up...
Just going to go back to being selfish now... trying to change others and rally support just ain't my thing and isn't worth my time or energy.
Guess good thing I didn't start on the Collab idea... Not many people would use it...7 -
It is with great sorrow I am announcing that an Apple Watch can catch fire while on your wrist. I bashed Fitbit very hard for this when they were giving people burn scars for life. Collecting and selling data is one thing, but mutilating bodies because of negligence and wanting to save a buck on manufacturing is a whole another thing. It seems like Apple is not much different.
I am struggling with body dysmorphia, and I told you out loud that if a Fitbit device gave me a burn scar for life, I would've probably committed suicide. I still stand by these words. My body integrity is a big deal to me. Having a scar due to my own negligence, like mishandling a knife, is one thing, but the concept itself that some fucking hustle culture startup can mutilate my body is another thing. It scares me.
I am considering to abandon any kind of wearable electronics altogether. The cost of failure is just too high. I'm probably going to get a mechanical Timex or a Seiko.19 -
My worst mistake was to not follow the commit process one time. I was multitasking a lot and forgot to run the tests for one of the commits I made. Next thing I know the whole Dev team started complaining that the Head of the branch was all messed up and blaming me. Long story short, it wasn't my change but I had to take the bullet and revert it for not following the process. It was deserved. Process is just as important as writing the code.

#DailyRant
I don't like Laravel Livewire and the architectural aspect of it. Every key stroke is a call to the server. The freedom of designing the minute behaviours are taken away. (e.g. border-bottom on a certain div). The maintain ability is not good either. Change one variable name and the whole thing breaks and it's difficult to pinpoint where it broke exactly. And the most of all, it's not beginner friendly.
My chest feels lighter now. Thanks. -

So yesterday, I was testing some new features that I just implemented in this project at my internship. The thing did not work.
Today, I came in, literally changed nothing, opened up the test again, and now the features work perfectly fine.
I don't know how to feel about this. Veteran programmers, please give me some advice. -

I work mostly as freelance, so I really dislike having to explain how am I doing thing to a client.
Some ask me to explain what is my logic, and when they don't understand(most of the time) I have that 'sigh' moment where you just want to work on a company where you are tasked with something and does not have to educate people about your method of development (at least not much)2 -
Clearing up my schedule, just got an 18 page resume for the position of mobile lead...
Thanks man I am gonna "read" the whole thing ...Fuck no I did not even read beyond first 4 lines...I got shit to do...like ranting about it...5 -
Oh my....I thought I was doing a very inteligent thing when I bought my Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime. Comming from an iPhone 5S. This was a cheaper phone with twice the batery power!
I was feeling it you know? This is the thing!
One year later....dang it! They forgot about the phone?
Great specs. No updates by Xiaomi.
Not even a rant just...sad disapointment!
Late December they said.... Nothing...
Damn!11 -
So as some of you read. I'm having trouble deciding between leaving or staying at my current job. So I have a question related to that.
Is it considered poor form or a good thing to make myself available in my resignation letter for freelance work? I developed multiple products in platforms the other developer there does not know in languages he does not know. I don't want to leave them stranded as I like the company. But I also don't want to rub their face in my leaving.3 -
Is booting linux from a drive a good way to start with linux if I'm not too sure I should make it my main os? The only thing keeping me back at this point is gaming since it's my gaming rig but idk I have 2 distros I want to use/decide between that I've loved on vms in the past but it's just me actually going through with doing it22

Hey erm, any idea to deal with the programmer who constantly suggests me to use python in everything?
I complain about Java the other day from my frustration on certain thing...(on security), then he keep telling me that "USE PYTHON " which I'm not interested......at the moment...
It is annoying.....12 -
I've fucked up a really simple test. I didn't knew what to answer not even to the most stupid and simple questions in it. How can I run my own business, code my sites entirely, install, administrate and maintain every device and db we have or need, and yet can't be able to properly use cat?
I feel like a phony. Next thing I'm going to do (after cry and feel ashamed) is to stick my nose to the screens until I achieve the knowledge I miserably lack or until my eyeballs get dry.
I'd like to end with a 'see you later' but that's not guaranteed...2 -
I've just realized that I am too damn annoyed when somebody touches my workspace without me knowing. It's not right to flip out that easy and probably it's about my current mental condition.
And the thing is I'm more annoyed due to knowing that. Ironic.2 -
I think that the most inspiring moment in my life, at least when it comes to programming, was the moment I realized that, that thing standing next to my desk isn't just a black box of black magic. It's a black box of black magic I can harness. That I can use my knowledge and my will to create stuff. Not only for my entertainment, but things that are actually useful and helpful to others.
This thought helped me decide to pursue career in IT. -
My short story about my interview today.
Hr: we have some repetitive work and deploys project very long.
My inner voice: why u post about having this kinds of skill if you want to just post in wordpress and also have a lot of requirement if you only edit and add post to wordpress, you should not hire a php developer you need a content uploader or some other thing.
Me: i think this job doesnt fit me. -
The hardest thing about writing code that works can be logic. For example, figuring out how to say you want to go to the next page when the form submit button is pressed, but not actually move to the next step is an error was thrown during processing.
This is one of those times when. I force a random member of my family to sit there and listen to me talking, pretty much to myself, until I figure it out. But hey, it generally turns out pretty good! (If not my energetic nephew)4 -

So I work at a monitoring station (yeah not a professional dev yet), so basically our entire day is spent on the phone. Yesterday morning, our phone system broke. Everyone is getting calls from all departments. Even departments they're not in.
As if my job isn't stressful enough as it is, now this fucking thing happens, and whattya know, shit still isn't working today... -
I am not overly excited about my team, the team lead, my manager, my managers manager, my managers co-managers or my managers manager manager.
Further, I am not that confident that management actually became management due to competence. I now believe that management got to be management because they think (wrongly) alike. This is not a comfortable thing to dwell on.5 -
There is one thing that will haunt me forever.
In my old job I was asked to fix some PHP code written by a guy who recently left the company.
Not only passwords were hardcoded in the code, but also he named all the variables like $a, $b, $c. And I still wonder, how comes he was not fired but left on his own terms?6 -

Installing a third OS in my PC (Manjaro, alongside Win10 and OSX Mojave). I do not remember how I configured dual boot for Win10 and OSX and now I have no clue of what I'm doing. Nothing will boot and I'm having to boot OSX through clover installed on my USB stick. Good thing I'm on quarantine and have a lot of time to play with this. Oh wait not really since I have some college work to do and I need Linux for that. Yay.8

Most satisfying bug, it was something with good old $.ajax, way back when Axios wasn't a thing and SPAs weren't so widely used.
I was somehow able to fix the call params for a file that would not load with any other setup. Maybe it was just setting async to sync or something like that, however the thing is I was not familiar with AJAX at all, but I managed to get it run.
Then I googled, why its working and figured out all the answers on SO and other pages were the exact thing i set up for my call. I was so proud
some context: I was struggling with this bug for days and asked more experienced web devs, everybody answered, your code should just work fine.
Maybe thats why I have a positive relation with SO, because the first thing i searched there was something that I figured out myself, haha -
Thing is, I do iOS development, I am almost a senior, holding a business on my own.. But I do not like iOS development and I am stuck here... Whatever company I go, I just get iOS stuff8

Dependency injection is the most useless piece of crap ever invented. Convention over configuration my ass.
It simplifies nothing a good architecture and pattern can't solve. It's just the current trend but it's the hugest pain in the ass I've ever experienced. It just adds complexity to the project.
I think it's just a thing for masochists and lazy devs, but then why not sticking a huge dido up your ass it's the same fucking thing.12 -
My job description is software developer, and that's the thing I do less because I have also been assigned tasks from other areas that nobody wants to do. Yeah sure, make the IT guy do it, he's not busy and doesn't do much anyway, right? Oh but wait until they do need something coded...3

I had to contact my ISP's tech support because I suddenly lost my Internet connection. I explained to the guy who answered that my router was working fine, and that my devices could connect to my WiFi network, but they didn't have Internet access.
He was so confused because he didn't understand that WiFi and the Internet are not the same thing. He then made me reboot my router and reset my configuration (like I hadn't done that before) and eventually ran out of ideas and scheduled a technician to visit my house next week. What a moron -
The thing i worked for last 3 weeks has been scrapped.

I like react, I really do. But one thing I hate about it, is the number of decisions I need to make, I get so fucking confused whether to use redux thunk or sagaas, inline styles or styles components, redux or flux, even to judicially choose whether to use a state management library or not. It just lack of my own experience or don't know what. But this thing sucks2

Other dev in my department thought it was okay to comment out the latest version of jquery lib that was used in the project and replace it with about 2 year old version to make his feature work. He did not informed anybody about this and today when build was tested, blame was on me because the feature i implemented does not work. I found issue was because of old jquery lib he put.
Funny thing is, his feature does not work with latest jquery version.
I guess it's gotta be either me or him. -

I tried a solution found on github to export my mails from Protonmail (it's ofc deprecated but should work... not for me 😂). Got some errors, fixed them, new errors... 🤔 None of the reported ones btw...

Going for the Odin Project now with a different approach! Fingers crossed5

I saw a thing was already define on the front-end and just went ahead and assigned it to the necessary orgs
Few hours later our process for that thing failed on 3/4 instances. The last I already setup a couple weeks ago for testing. Turns out there's 2 things with really similar names on those instances so when I decided to not fucking check, the wanted thing was never defined so it couldn't process
Welp I'm messaging my boss tomorrow morning to see how bad this is, then unassigning the existing thing before defining the correct one
Fucking hell why did I not verify the definition. Would've taken less than 30 fucking seconds for all instances. Thankfully this is still technically in testing. But fuck I'm pissed at myself2 -

I have an app I have developed that uses concurrency. My dev env allows me to select different targets. One of those targets is WebAssembly. So I got it configured and decided to test my app. It immediately failed on compile due to the concurrency module missing. I later found that for my dev env concurrency for webassembly is experimental.
So concurrency is a thing for webassembly, but the support on my dev env end is not there yet.
Is threading difficult in webassembly?2 -
After not answering my calls a guy from another team decided, that it will be a great thing just to let me know, that there is a bug in a script that I handed him earlier... 15 minutes before end of my work... extra 2 hours spent on finding the solution... and it will be continued tommorrow 😒1

started a new Confluence home page for a web app project we just kicked off at my company. for those that dont know confluence is a collaboration tool. people sometimes compare it too sharepoint but its not. this is basically the only thing on the home page now. Shrute'd!!1

Holy fuck, after 1 month of not using my pc and no coding I look at the project I was working on and it looks like chinese, I don't understand anything, so step 1 it's gonna be trying to remember how this thing worked (caveman brain turned on)5

Finally, my height-adjustable desk frame arrived! I even ordered from a vendor who ships from my country and not from the other end of the world to have it in a week and not in 12 months.
But alas, the vendor sent me two left legs, with the result of the cable being too short to set it up with my desk board. :(
So either I send the whole thing back to the vendor or I find an extension cable, luckily it uses molex connectors and not some crude proprietary plug type.
But seriously, what are the odds for that FFS? -
So I have spent the entire morning trying to fix null values in the database, because they keep fucking up my code.
I hate the fucking person who made the database at the place I work, dude has not heard of a thing called NOT NULL!!! -
Please tell me I'm not the only one hating Laravel. Been working on that thing for well over a year, my hatred for this thing grew so strong and vibrant I feel like I can see it right now in front of my face.
I need to know I'm not alone.6 -
My younger bro started Coding today and the first thing he is asked me was if Jupyter Notebook has a dark mode or not.1

How is complaining about npm install taking forever still a thing? I reinstalled my whole npm folder over cellular the other day while talking shit over coffee... relatively quick as fuck.
In saying that though, it should definitely only pull necessary requirements to run the project not every fucking thing. -
Sorry for posting a non dev goal
1. Check every social media ultra often and the first thing in the morning. I was late or sometimes completely missed something because I did not check my social media. Today I missed school because study leve was kinda cancelled. But guess what did not check my social media for the announcement and checked it in rhe afternoon when school was long over. No nwed to check email because nearly nothing important comes there except my report card which is resent on whatsapp 4 times a year6 -
funny thing. My apple account is not logged in cuz of payment method. But it just worked. You just have to try it again and again like 17th times, so that's how you do it.

PHP should have another error. E_XDEBUG_IS_ACTIVATED. That way I wouldn't have spent weeks trying to figure out why my server was slow as shit.
What a piece of crap debugger. IDE integration is not worth the time overhead. I wish I had known phpdbg was a thing.2 -
Things that wasted my time this week:
bash in my .cshrc
Using the wrong application to open waves.
Logs after an if(a thing) return;
Updating i3-gaps and using my config and it locking up.
A testing machine having the wrong kernel as default.
Not a bad week :) -
When you interview, remember that the single biggest factor in getting an offer is whether the interviewer likes you or not. I could tell lots of stories to back that up but it would take forever. So my TL;DR version would be: it isn't the only thing that matters, but trust me - it's crucially important.

In my 4 companies i worked with, one thing which i learnt is the Product documentation is only needed by the Managers, neither the client, nor the users, of course not the developers. We hate them more than the testers.

So we played a game where everyone in class gets a piece of paper strapped onto his back and everybody else can write one positive thing about the person. Some people wrote anime, osu and dank memes on my back. Mfw when not even mad4 -
A thing that we all hate. We are programmers and we don't fix computer. Disrupted my programming flow because email doesn't comes in. Turns out the PC itself is not connected to the Internet. FML, now I have to start over.

Goddam chair broke. Not a good time. A new chair is the kind of thing I'd usually like to take my time with. Looks like I'll have get a cheapy temporarily. But we all know that goes

My angularJS learning project is closely coming to an end. Not bad for a JavaScript first timer. Everything is laid out properly, the only thing left is to connect it properly with the backed :) . PS I'm using angular12

WTF?! One thing I could count on was the Sun not exploding this year. Then I see this shit!
https://dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech...
How does a piece just break off? I would be asking the same thing if I was in the doctors office and my dick just broke off.11 -
So I work with another team that develop services I use for my website.
The thing is, when they do big changes, I am not warned. So when I update my proxies, surprise, don't compile anymore, have things to change.
Worse is, I have their code right now. And the code that is deployed right now. They're not the same. So I know that I'm gonna have to change again things some days, but that's because I searched through the code. -
Is vscode that notoriously slow as a damn snail?? I can barely use it sometimes. I’m on a MacBook Pro that I bought new last year, so it’s not a potato.
Then again my last job issued a thinkpad, not my top choice bc I like Mac’s but vscode ran somewhat ok on that ugly thing12 -
Girlfriend complains about how I'm always on my laptop, coding, and how I'm not spending enough time with her.
I tell her that my laptop is not the NUMBER ONE thing in my life, but She is.
Little does she know that as a programmer, I start counting from zero6 -
Spent a when afternoon trying to solve a unworking font-face implementation to IE. The implementation was bullet-proof. Guess what, it works on IE11 but the company only uses IE8.. Good thing it's not my job to say which version to use 😄5
-
The more I work with videojs-ima, the more I am convinced it is not the solution for what we are doing. Any time I try to figure out how to do a thing on my current project, the answer is usually "don't". Then I need to hammer the app til "don't" becomes "does sorta"6

So my job have a hood monetary value, it's pre-IPO and I still need to complete a year for 25 percent of RSU offering.
The bad thing is work is vanilla and load is a lot. I have been slacking off and working just enough to let thing go by but now a days that's not even possible. My manager provides me bad feedbacks, alright it's only been 4 months here, I see no one I can take advice from. I just don't want to exist. It's so boring. So much effort for nothing. Seriously nothing. I have tried a lot last month, but that's not even taken as a good thing, as I'm new I'm supposed to be slow but that's being pointed out a lot of times. I haven't gone to office, I don't have coworkers to talk to. It's just not working out for me.5 -
So turns out my manager wants me to do QA automation (not in Espresso btw) of my own items "because we're all in the same team". The weirdest thing is that she's obsessed with "best practices" about daily iteration work such as not starting to work on something until test planning is done (she gets CRAYZEEE about that). Violating one of the core development principles is out the window so I guess the question is am I in a good place to ask for a raise since I'm going to have dual roles?2

I just spent 3hours trying to determine why behat could not find context files and tried to find nonexistent one while running it on jenkins.
It turned put that config directory with behat.yml had to be in lowercases rather than starting with uppercase.
It worked on my machine though..
Funny thing is rven after that it failed as php version on jenkins did not have propper extension. Guess I’ll have to get into this docker thing1 -
Going to my first front-end meetup right now. Probably won't understand a thing from lectures, drink a beer, utter not a single word to anyone and go home. Wish me luck!
