How to have success when you are chatting with live support:
- Pretend to be a girl
This is very effective, I can get lower price and good deal almost every time.25 -
Last night I had a dream about a bug and I woke up with a solution. When I got to the office and tried it out it worked...I have heard about this happening before but this is the first time I have experienced it!11
-
I believe that devRant needs to have a scheduling feature that you can set your work time in it, so when your hand unconsciously opens devRant in that time, this activity pops up:10

*Lazy Friend has IntelliJ and Eclipse*
*Lazy Friend using Notepad++*
Me: Why don't you use IntelliJ? Its debugger really helps..
LF: It takes too much time to start, I don't have that much time..
*continues staring at his screen and using his mind debugger*
It's kinda funny when he just sits and stares at his screen after saying that he doesn't have any time..
It took way less time to find the (a?) bug when he finally used the debugger..7 -
School holidays be like:
"Yea! I finally have time to do projects that I like!"
When school starts again:
"How dafuq did I manage to do absolutely nothing in the past month?!?!"4 -
There are times when being "friendly neighbor it guy" pays back.
I have a neighbors, their son is little less intelligent than average person after being injured in accident, I help them from time to time. He gets the pc trashed with adware, usual stuff, they ask me to clean it up.
Recently I broke my arm. They offered to cook for me until I recover to full health... Seriously, that's huge help when you live alone and spend most time working. I'm glad to have them.
Wanted to share with you guys, there are people who appreciate your help with their pc and can give back if you're in need.3 -
I think I get a programmer high.
Like when I program, I get really into it, time is flying, I'm having fun problem solving, I am super focused, my brain is thinking super fast, and I have a hard time stopping.
Maybe similar to a runners high?9 -
QA: Please Look at this Defect.
Me: Okay not a problem!
QA: Thanks
Me: <Starts to look at Defect>
QA: 2 mins later. Do you have an ETA on when it will be fixed?
Me: Not yet, I'm still looking at it.
QA: Do you know what time it can be fixed? I have a deadline.
Me: I don't know what's wrong yet, I can't tell you when it will be fixed if I don't know what's wrong.
QA: Okay. Update Me.
Me: Opens Dev Rant.5 -
In my short time of working in the IT industry, I have seen my co-workers treated badly during their notice period before resignation.
The question is why!!??
So, today when I found this story, I knew it will stay with me forever ..14 -
To the people saying "I need to reduce my keystrokes" when they are asked why they omit semicolon's;
It is a common delusion thinking that we spend most of our time typing, when in reality we spend most of our time gazing into the abyss thinking to ourselves "oh my god what have I done".
Anything that decreases your typing time but increases your time in the abyss is a terrible tradeoff.
- D. Crockford1 -
I had a professor, in college that believed "sometimes we have to fire customers. There are bad customers and it serves no purpose to spend time and effort in serving them when they burn you out and are simply bad customers" and I share that vision.
-
I am from Germany.
And I wanna make a (new) website.
This is fucking exhausting 😩
(Do I have to translate it to english as well? The site will be bilingual).
I miss the time when I was a careless teenage who would just code and not care about bureaucracy...8 -
"Kiki, I want you to, for the first time of your career at %company%, quit worrying about deadlines and just wander free. Forget about due projects, forget about everything, and just do your crazy experiments till the end of this month."
This was the one-to-one with our CEO today. Yes, I'm being paid to do whatever I want without time restrictions, as long as it is related to my field.
And you know what? At this stage of my life, I don't even want to exploit that, to weasel my way around definitions and justify doing nothing. I legit have three AI experiments to run, I have money to run them, I have time, and I for sure have motivation.
Good workplace is when doing nothing isn't the most desirable thing to do.6 -
Im at the end of my studies and doing great, but when my clinical depression episodes kick in I forget how to take a piss correctly let alone write some code. I think I'l have a fun time when I get a job.14
-
With time, I have come to the realisation that when a person says he knows C++. He's either a noob or god!3
-
Fighting against management is my daily struggle.
I reject the notion that more management, meetings and reports makes me work faster.
Want it done in time?
Stop wasting my time and interrupting me when I'm deep in complex thought. Let me do what's necessary and put in the hours if I have the energy and time.
But you damn better pay me for it.
I do not care for your praise, when I make the impossible happen time and again in days that would take months.
I expect your praise in the form of higher numbers going into my account.4 -
My relatives: "Can you fix my computer/ipad/etc..."
Me: "Sure why not. I'l take a look when I have the time"
Lesson: Don't be so arrogant.2 -
I was looking for a part time job when I was 15, knew nothing about coding, got a developer job cause I said I'm keen to learn xD .. 5 years later.. I'm still learning but I have a better knowledge now!4
-
I live 5 minutes from work. Not in and of itself a way to improve but it means I have an extra hour and a half each day when compared to my colleagues in which to do work, spend time reading etc.
Also get rid of Facebook.
Best life advice I can give.7 -
When I started learning to code I couldn't wait to become a 'senior dev' thinking I would spend all my time writing awesome code.
Now that I am a 'senior dev' and have the experience I now spend 90% of my time documenting & planning and even less time coding :'(9 -
My project manager posted in linkedin 'When I die,I want my developers to carry my coffin so that they can put me down one last time"
I commented on that post
"For the first time ,you have mentioned the requirements clearly".1 -
HAVE YOU JUST TRIED TO BARGAIN ON MY ESTIMATE?!
I really hate when people try to bargain on my estimates. It's done when I say so. I really think it through before I tell you the deadline, so GO FUCK YOURSELF PLEASE AND SHUT THE FUCK UP. NEVER EVER BARGAIN ON THAT AGAIN.
If you do, it will take one week longer for every time you try it.7 -
That moment when you copy something then hit ctrl+c instead of ctrl+v to paste and realize what you have done a split second later... Every time I do this a little part of me dies7
-
The student life smell is strong with my Desktop too,
and no I don't have a problem I only drink and smoke socially also when a bug takes longer than an hour to fix...
Which is most of the time
Okay I might have a little problem10 -
OK, so I get that we don't have a great reputation for dating but at the same time it's kinda rubbing salt in the wound when a dev company organises a global coding challenge for valentines day.3
-
When I was 20, I coded for 24 hours straight, even ate at the computer, as a dare to finish all the tasks in one go. I was successful.
Now I'm 25 and I have no time for such stuff. Kinda miss that3 -
<cheesy>
When I stumbled upon this app in the Play Store last week, I was not expecting such a good heartwarming community of intelligent individuals. I have a great time here. Thank you @dfox and @trogus for making such an awesome platform!
</cheesy>1 -
I feel like a man out of time and space.
I can work from anywhere so I am nowhere.
I work all the time, and I have no time to work.
Hours, days, and weeks. They all feel the same. The gentle barrier of sleep that denotes when one day ends and another begins is barely remembered if observed at all.
What the fuck did I sign up for.4 -
A support request came in at 4:30 this afternoon, I logged onto the server somewhat pissed off that there was a support request at this time on a Friday.
I checked the logs and noticed 500 errors coming from our integration parter after a little log checking and with glee I declared "not my fucking problem!" I replied to the customer and ccd our partner. Have fun bitches, next time deploy your new version when we fucking agreed! -
Most useless meeting?
I once went to a meeting where people spent half an hour discussing when to reschedule the meeting that we were in because we couldn't have it then even though nobody was absent. The actual rescheduled meeting was also half an hour long, and could have occurred during the time when we discussed when the meeting should occur.
I've been to a lot of useless meetings (I still think that most meetings I attend could have just been an email chain or Slack conversation), but that one takes the cake.3 -
Do anyone else have major focus issues? When I'm enjoying something, I can focus completely for a long time. But when I'm miserable, 15 minutes seems to be the maximum I can focus.
It's really hard when you have long passages to read for class and are unable to focus long enough to actually absorb the material.
I really want to try ADHD medicine, but I don't want to rely on it to focus.8 -
When will Amazon learn that I'M BRITISH! DONT FUCKING SHOIW ME PRICES IN FUCKING USD*, EVEN WHEN I'M ON THE FUCKING BRITISH SITE! WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO FUCKING SIGN OUT AND IN AGAIN EVERY FUCKING TIME TO REMIND IT!?
I'm just trying to buy a raspberry pi zero....
* I have nothing against USD, but I need to swear in order to vent my frustration.8 -

I just dreamed about a 6-year old kid looking for me to ask me what is a pipeline. A CPU pipeline.
I felt so happy to explain (I was that into computers when I was 11 or so) that I couldn't start, I woke up first.
Time to have a son/daughter?3 -
Please tell me I'm not the only one who gets really annoyed when someone uses jQuery to do stuff that would take the same amount of pure JS. I think these days many people only use jQuery out of laziness, not because it's necessary. Why load an entire library to set CSS attributes and innerHTML? Yes, there was a time when it was very useful to have jQuery, but today we have querySelectorAll and all that. You can save plenty of kBs, load time and improve performance.
Next time you're about to load jQuery ask yourself: do I really need it? Chances are the answer will be no.22 -
That moment when you quit your job where you worked for the past 4 years and you have your last 5 days at work when your supervisor says that it's time to improve our documentation. Oh really? Wtf have I been saying all along? We have almost no documentation at the moment, so I expect lots and lots of confusion once I'm gone...confusion or phone calls to me.3
-
So I'm a perfectionist, especially when with code, smells, solid, design patterns, naming conventions, etc and I be have this co-worker that blackmails me every time he doesn't want to do something saying "I don't know it so my code is gonna be ugly".6
-
That moment when you have refactored so much shit, then really broken the project, but can't see yourself doing a git revert because you had invested so much time and know ultimately it *needs* these changes...
Thank god I fixed it! 😌3 -
I secretly wish everything at work fails because everyone is so fucking stupid every time it makes me cringe when I have to talk to someone or watch someone explaining something to me.
Everything seems to lack planning and focus, our PMS act more like clients than like managers, its a total fucking mess and I have to clean some of it this week.
It's getting so much on my nerves that I had to open my whiskey for the first time this year, damn. -
The great thing about coding is, every problem can be solved with logic. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
Often when I don't know what to do, I just keep thinking about what I want to have and break down what I need for that and in the end I always come to a good solution. And it gets easier from time to time. -
i kinda feel embarrassed all the time. i feel like it's never enough, i don't know enough, there's so much i don't know. i do enjoy my work and sometimes there are moments where i'm proud of what i've done, or these "i'm a fucking genious" moments when i solve a bug or a certain problem or when something finally works. but if i have to do something new, i tend to panic a bit, as long as i do not yet have a concrete solution in mind.
my perception contrasts with the feedback people give me, but even when i'm happy about the positive feedback, i tend to think to myself, "they're wrong, it's not that great"..4 -
I'm on a call collecting requirements to a feature request that was developed last year, deployed last month, and nobody has a fucking clue about what's going on.
I'm also getting told that my requirements won't work, when they clearly will.
What's fucking crazy? In the time that I have wasted on this topic, I could have already written the fix.1 -
So I reach office early , bcz I like to have sun left when I go home.
Other devs arrive almost 3-4 hours after me. And when it's time to leave,
They : you leave so early
Me : yes you ahole. I come early too.
And then they get credits for staying long I'm like yeah if you come at 12-1 you have to stay back.
So fucking frustrating.7 -
that feeling when your new toys from aliexpress get delivered earlier than expected... i feel so happy unpacking those sensors, capacitors, heat sinks, microchips, breadboards and all. i feel like i have a geeky shopping addiction, i probably won't have the time to play with them from all the work and other personal projects, but still i hoarded enough electronics to invade the world with a drone army in case i have a few weeks me-time.5
-
My Lazy Habits:
1. Not testing my own code thoroughly... cuz fuck that. That's the tester's/QA's job.
2. I create slack commands to get certain things done, so I dont have to get up and open my laptop each time I receive a ticket.
3. Ask more time for development that I actually need so I can fit in couple naps here and there.
4. Falsely claiming that I am busy when someone invites me over meet or a phone call. Like just text me.
5. Factoring my laziness in when I design features LOL.1 -
A "online" friend wants me to create a wp website.
I declined it.
Then he asked me, if I would at least try it, when I have free time.
Geez.1 -
I really hate it when I forget my password, cause then when I have to reset it and choose a new password a message pops up saying "Your new password cannot be the same as your old password. " Every damn time... Like WtF8
-
That moment when you take a look back at your old portfolio websites...
I have to cringe and laugh at the same time rn. The way I styled it. OMG...
Self note: You will still cringe in the future, when you are going to look back at your current portfolio website.5 -
It's time to put my 3D printer together 😍
All the parts I ordered have arrived accept for two timing belts.
Super excited, will post pictures in a couple days when I finish building it and writing the firmware for it.8 -
I have no patience when softwares takes time to load.
It ruins my momentum/focus and I just wanna throw everything away.14 -
I do believe, genuinely that “I don’t know” is sometimes an acceptable answer. If you don’t know, you don’t know. I appreciate the honesty.
But at the same time
I don’t know how much longer I can take “I don’t know” as an answer from my boss when I ask about critical business things HE tasked me with, or things relating to career development and maximizing my time with this company.
Do I need my boss to have all the answers on company revenue? No.
Do I need my boss to at least have an understanding on wtf is going with projects when my priorities get changed mid-project for the 4th time? Hell yes.4 -
Always when I have some excessive amount of spare time, something always gotta go wrong and waste 90% of that available time for fucks sake.
Wanted to install raw antergos on my new usb for pure chrooting into it, but it gets stuck on preparing the disk and there seems to be no solutions to it.6 -
"Don't waste your time reinventing the wheel, just use *random CMS or framework*"
I understand that I will never have all the time to do every projets from scratch, because of deadlines, clients, employers... But I was still a student when I've been told that.
And I never felt that I was wasting my time because I wanted to better understand what I was doing.
And I hate CMS. All of them.1 -
Every time I tell a more senior dev I need help, they tell me to try the obvious things, I tell them I tried those things already, and they think I must have just done it wrong. So they spend an hour explaining to me how to do something I literally just did, and then more time trying the exact same things I just tried. Nobody wins.
Except for me when I find the correct solution while they’re re-implementing the failed solutions because nobody trusted me.
Sadly, this happens all the time. “Did you try a and b?” “Yeah, no luck.” “Okay, so when you try a, you have to remember to call c and d. Let me explain...”
So much wasted time. But the silver lining is in getting to be the one who found the solution (until they wonder ‘why’d she even come to me anyway if she knew the answer?’ ... 🙄) Because I trusted you to know what “team” means, and it’s not too late to learn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
when you don't have anything to rant about because you're fresh out if university and don't have a job so you don't feel like a full fledged dev. 😞😭 time to study for those interviews I guess.3
-
I get angry every fucking time when I see such method signature:
method(int, int, int, string, string, string, string)
Sounds scary, doesn't it?
Nah. That's the reason our IDEs are so complex. So, I change this and put proper data value/struct class instead, just to make this much readable and understandable for everyone.
And, every time there is a fella that asks this utterly stupid question:
What about performance impact?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa fuckyutitititiigig
And. I. Have. To. Run. Performance. Tests.
Because noone understands performance and computers so I have to prove there is nothing to worry about.
I know when I will go somewhere else I will have to again prove some fuckwit that web applications are so complex already, so adding a new data structure doesn't impact its performance.12 -
The only time I actually open Safari is during those debugging moments when I hope that all other browsers have just given up on me.1
-
Every time I search something on Stack Overflow, I get excited when it's word for word the issue I'm having. Giddy with excitement, I click the question and scroll down.
Every damn time "Question was closed due to being off-topic".
Even when it's totally on topic!
Anyone get this or do I have the worst luck on the planet?6 -
My colleague does not use git (well, not for much), hates all external frameworks, and when he sees my code he tells me "that's not how I would have done this", every single goddamn time. Aaand we are the only two developers in our company.4
-
Finish all my on-going side projects that have been left to gather dust due to lack of time and resources...
They may not be any good however they are fun to work on when I can. -
I have a second hard drive called "Windows" on my main system (for dual boot).
When I unmount it after I had to access it via Linux it says "You can remove Windows now".
Makes me smile every time.1 -
Fucking hate when business people says this to me:
- You have no time to do this, we will find somebody else to do it. (EXCUSE ME? how do you know I have no time? If have no time I WILL TELL YOU)
- Your team is too busy, we will outsource that (IF THAT it's a priority, we WILL DO THAT, fuck you, I'll tell you if we need to outsource or not)
- Requirements are too complex to do now. We will think about it and we will tell you, maybe it's just enough to add a column to db (WHAT? WHAT THE FUCK IS too complex? I didn't even see anything we can call requirement, nor speak with relevant people, so how do you fucking know they are complex if you don't know shit about dev and our platform)
Conclusion
It's true, I have no time, because I don't fucking understand what do you want, so I'm running all day and night doing useless things.2 -
It's 11 pm. I'm almost drunk and I have realized I have spent too much of my life learning. I have spent too much time working. I may only be 25 but I still am dedicating up to 100+ hours a week to my job and it needs to stop. It has only left me sad alone and drunk. I hope others on here try to have some social life because sitting here drunk and lonely sucks. Maybe I shouldn't be so picky. Who knows. Enjoy life when you can.10

I know Google isn't the worst company in the world. But some of their data tracking just seems a bit odd. Such as keeping audio logs each time you use Google on your phone. Or when it picks up random bits of conversation. Along with them keeping track of where your going, and where you have been. Even if Google maps isn't running.
And one of my all time favorites is when Google Allo was a thing, it used to have access to my camera randomly without actually opening the app. My phone will tell me different logs each time Allo opened the camera without my permission.
I know they need to collect data in order to advance some of their fields of tech. But it just seems a bit intrusive when companies like Google do this.11 -
When an intern asks if it is your first time using python, but I have been using it for years now. feelsbadman.jpg1
-
@dfox bug report time (at least it looks like one)!
I have ~400 upvotes atm.
For shoes in pic you need 1500 of them.
How i did this?
I equipped them when they were free afaik.5 -
Yes this is a rant about parents and work but I don't care!
So looks like my parents are going to kick me out because I don't have a full time job and according to them, I'm not looking...
I currently work in retail and have for the past 5 years and started working day 1 that I could have, been applying for IT positions when I'm one of the highest qualified on my area but get turned down so they can pay a teenager half the amount, apply for big retail chains that are "always hiring" like Coles, woolies and Kmart, get turned fucking down.
Don't qualify for government assistance as I'm just out of the earnings bracket, can't afford my own places, don't have my licence yet so I'm fucked...
But hey, atleast my parents will be rid of me and just dis-own me like my middle brother until I have a kid or they need tech support.
Why is getting work so fucking hard when you're qualified, I'm willing to even be a call centre guy but as soon as job possibilities come up I get fucked over time and time again -,-2 -
Starting new game development project.
Coder:" ok guys, I think that this time we have to focus much more on sprints management and documentation"
Designer:"Ye, this time we should use better scrum software, like jira or youtrack"
Artist:"but Asana has the unicorns when you complete a task"4 -
When a client says they no longer have time for one of their websites and asks you to make it completely autonomous.
Yeah sure, I'll go ahead and install Skynet on it right away!
I no longer have any motivation to work with that client. -
When I started programming ~5 years ago.
Teacher: OK, C++ classes and structs have 3 access modifiers: private, public and protected.
Private fields can't be accessed out of the current class.
Me thinking: wow, that's cool, but how can it be? I have to research.
I went to home and wrote a class with one variable with its set and get functionality.
Then I opened Cheat engine) and tried to access and change the variable. When I succeeded, I started hating this world of programming.
After some time I understood that it's wonderful cause it's up to you.5 -
I've never been hacked - not that I know of :D - and never "hacked" someone else.
(Sure, I did some things in high school to circumvent certain restrictions but nothing worth mentioning whatsoever.)
But all these rants that I read so far have me wondering if I shouldn't simply setup a honeypot sometime when I'm about to be really bored just to have some fun. Then again, I don't have time to be bored. :/1 -
I hate it when customers add features or have changes all the time and my boss agrees with it. Might be small stuff but it piles up. I try to prioritize and work through the list, but just when I about to reach the end something is added or changed. It's frustrating and stressful.3
-
@dfox
On Desktop, when i comment or rant, please focus the textfield.
The number of times I almost had to buy a new pc because it almost learned to fly. Just because when you are ranting to vent, you don't want to get even ansier because you have been typing tin air this whole time.1 -
When someone in my family start a wedding ceremony and I being invited to help, but I don't have any other skill other than googling javascript. So in that time I just realize I don't like being human because I'am uselless, better be born as mic stand.2
-
After seeing everyone arguing about coffee on my post yesterday, I thought you guys might like to see my new invention.
I call it "the late man's coffee" for when you don't have enough time to eat breakfast and drink your morning coffee.6 -
Been 122 days since my last post, since then I have been working on a game engine on Vala using SDL2 in my free time (Lol I have none)
Decided to put that on ice or just work on it when drunk (very common occurrence) and teaching myself C while working on a game or game engine, hopefully will have some quality rants inbound!3 -
College male computer science student here:
Even when I find attractive girls who want to date me, the thought of it stresses me out. In reality if I can truly chat and have a good time with a girl she has been friend zoned.
Advice anyone?8 -
My parents proudly accept me not working in computer related jobs. But they also would when I did. I think.... or I hope...
I just hope you guys and girls enjoy the time your parents are alive and have nothing to regret in the future. Life is to short for hatred. -
Had a guy put in a pull request with an empty file diff. He comes by two weeks later and asks when am I going to have time to review it.
-
An old man in my company walked in the restroom right after I entered, I was destroying the toilet when I heard him leave without WASHING HIS FUCKING HANDS, some time later I saw this animal communicating and shaking hands with somebody. Have you been grossed out by an event like this before?10
-
Have you noticed that mac users rarely use full screen mode? Its so hard to use that they just leave half sized windows, its so annoying when I have to ask every time if they can make it bigger17
-
Dev ducks. I don't have one, but I'll get one.
I've always talked to the people around me when I was debugging but now it's time to talk to a "real" duck.2 -
Question: is it common to a developer to have lots of tasks to do at the same time, so you don't have sure what you need to do first, specially when you have 2 or more urgent projects?
That is one of the things I most hate on managing.8 -
I get anxiety when I have no work for days,
I am like the fuck is wrong with you body. You’re suppose to be chill, not a monster that wants to work all the time.5 -
I hate when I'm getting in my flow and everything starts clicking, but I have to stop to go do something else. It sucks having something almost completely solved but not having enough time to finish it.1
-
How many times will you say hi to me when we're passing on the stairs for nth time? How many 👋 will you send me in one day at almost regular intervals? I'm not a fucking rest api. You don't have to generate a fucking oauth token every time you pass me some information. I have a fucking state and it's getting distracted by too much human interaction3
-
just need to say this: It's GNU/Linux folks. I know, I know, it's not as easy to say when you want to talk about it, but every once in a while give the damn GNU a little credit. Without it we might not have Linux as we know it, so show some love from time to time, it's not that hard to say GNU/Linux.12
-
I have such little patience for the whole fucking “let’s just do it later” mentality anymore. Especially when it takes like 30 minutes or less to fix. Then a month goes by and everyone suffers from it not being fixed. Like I understand why they do so and why it’s important to just do the task. I understand there’s often no time to make huge improvements, but if you have time and you see a small thing that can be fixed, make improvements you silly little bump-on-a-log. Like have a little empathy for your comrades goddamnit.8
-
I really feel like coding right now, but I don't have time. Problem is: when I do have time and I have to code I probably don't want to anymore.
-
So I just bought my new laptop and I'm thinking "Forget about Arch. I don't have time to waste now. Let's just install Debian and save time for important tasks I have. Why should I redo everything that is done, while I have enough undone jobs already."
2 days later, at last I managed to install nvidia hybrid drivers and get it to work successfully. Now I just have to find out the cause of the black screen I get when it recovers from suspend.7 -
The whole dev community.
Those who have dedicated time and energy to share solutions, tricks, bug-solving ideas, codes that I can steal; teach me patiently even though I am slow, cheer me up when I am down because I'm stuck debugging for hours, brighten me up with programming jokes when I am sad.
Those who have allowed me to earn good money in the field that I really enjoy.
Yeah, including you 😘 -
My favourite year was probably 2016, when I left my previous job and became a full-time dev. That year, the OS project I'd been working on hit 10 000 users, and one of the collaborators decided to hire me.
Moved country, and had a really exciting time, and the years since have been pretty great too.1 -
I just read this great line in the Google SRE book which I have experienced myself:
"Some of the most satisfying coding I’ve ever done was deleting thousands of lines of code at a time when it was no longer useful."3 -
What's wrong with motivation?
Each time I have a great idea at work, I stop working, I search for informations and then, when I'm home, I can't motivate myself to work.6 -
Work is fun when every time I finish editing a project I have to wait 30 mins for it (solution) to compile :D2
-
My manager wants to have a conversation about my attitude. Time to explain that when I worked hard I got no pay rise, I only got a promotion because I lost my rag at him when he was being an arse. I have no motivation to do anything other than the bare minimum.22
-
This team wants to reinvent the wheel, when we already have the wheel. When asked why they want to waste their time, they replied saying because they just want to.
I have to help these idiots.1 -
How I hate the moments when you realize you have wasted time during the day and want to do everything in the evening.2
-
I was teaching students most of the time, in the last year teachers where somewhat forced by my internship company to be open for the knowledge students have, so that is when I started teaching teachers as well.
Its the worst experience I ever had. -
My GF is also a programmer. But we rarely talk about coding stuff.
Everything is fine with just one problem.
When I have a good focus on whatever I'm doing, I have trouble giving attention to other things and people around me. When doing Programming especially.
So I often feel bad that I couldn't give her enough care and time.1 -
Most hours worked in a row?
18
Most bourse worked in a row coding?
20 mins
I don’t have time for anything else when I work 18 hour days.😐1 -
Null Pointer Exception
Null Pointer Exception,
you're in a class of your own.
I will try and catch you,
each instance you're thrown.
Null objects expel you,
because you are vile.
I dread that I'll c you,
when I attempt to compile.
Like the grim reaper,
you destroy lines of code.
And so to you,
I dedicate this ode.
You have no remorse
for those who won't test.
As a result,
I need to confess.
From time to time,
when there's no time waste.
I must rely
on cut and on paste.
Although we're acquainted,
I really must mention.
You're not my friend,
Null Pointer Exception. -
example of my commenting on bugs to fix later
Before I found devrant:
//1-3-18
//when user goes to send mailing for first time
//we need to remove the message from admin
//which only displays on first time login, but
//may block the data we are looking for
// then return to parent
After DevRant:
//9-8-18
//when user goes to send mailing for first time
//there's a fucking stupid message that they
//have to read once which blocks the data we need
//so, goutte click that shit, then return to parent3 -
I hate when one of my cw starts to flood the chat, especially the #general. It goes like:
CW: hey
CW: anyone have a pendrive
CW: ?
Me: I have one (and tells him where he can find on my desk)
Another CW: I have one too
CW: thanks, I'll get the one from <Another CW>
CW: hahahahahaha
You don't need to write a whole thesis in a single message, but at least you should guarantee that each message have some meaningful information, not just "hey", "?" and "hahaha"
Slack is not MSN.
Who should and when it would be a good time to tell him this is a waste of attention?8 -
I just hate how my body believes that coding time and snack time are synonyms. Like ok, i might have been eating some chips or noodles while i was doin' the thinking, but hell, i cannot just empty 2 or 3 bowls of food each time i have to open and IDE.. How can you guys keep yourselves busy from eating when you fight the evil forces of bugged code?3
-
So after getting my question down-voted & deleted in SO, I thought of trying my luck here.
As a recent graduate and unemployed, Do you think I should focus on one web platform or I should know a bit of everything and then later on I focus on one platform when I get my full time job? or what do you think I should do?
I have experience with Laravel (mid-level) and asp.net core (beginner level).
Thank you for your time.6 -
Why do I get the urge to do 3-4 side projects just when I don't have time for neither of them and when I had time to do them I was just doing nothing all day...4
-
"You should accept your employees for who they are and optimize for their abilities. I am a night owl, always have been, always will be. I am done trying to work in the mornings—it is a waste of time as I am not effective and make more mistakes when I try to work at this time."

when i just read stuff about a programming language without putting any effort on it, after a month of vacation, every single thing i actually read and learnt over the past year came floating out of my brain and now i have to start over just so i can finish a programming challenge in time
note to self: time to get serious and keep up my pace in this devRace1 -
When I don't have the motivation to work on one of my projects, I just wait, play some games, start a few other projects, and eventually, I start working on it again sometime.
Works most of the time.1 -
Anytime I have to Google something. Which is all the time. I doubt myself all the time. Also, when coding our robot and it randomly shot backwards and ripped through a couple table and chair legs. That happened too.2
-
When you are fired from a project (restructuring and finance related) and before you have free time multiple companies are already soliciting for you....
Why people? I was planning on having a few days off....1 -
!rant, throw everything away
When you spend 9 hour at work, 2 hours in that fucking exploded bus, tries to spend time with friends and family, spend enough time with that one special person, try to sleep descently and manage to work on your personal projects during that two hours in the bus, and that each day, each week, the whole year.
You need a lot of motivation!
But when today I loose two months of work because of a hardware problem and that (because I don't have internet in the bus) I didn't backup on GitHub , I just have lost all motivation and will!
I just can't anymore!
FML5 -
There's one thing I have most frustrated with, it's when a project manager has no technical knowledge.
They are like those people who makes you angry every time they open their mouth.
Thay just never makes sense and never understand anything.
Always wasting everybody's time.8 -
The day I understand how CSS works will be a lifetime achievement...!!!
Having hard time when you have to design and develop a website at a time... I just hate designing... (No offense.. personal opinion)7 -
I have waitsted whole my day searching a bug with memory allocation in C++, and still don't know how to fix it! That moment, when coding took me far less time than searching that fucking bug... I feel that i missed anything, but all looks ok
I HATE C++ WITH IT'S FUCKING POINTERS!!!!!25 -
Why do I have a hard time finding a new job when senior devs are not only changing the data model, but naming keys "key" and "value"!?
"Oh look, a SQL error."2 -
Living life with regular work (8 hours per day, programming) and studying CS for masters degree is fucking disaster... I cant wait for end, all I do is fucking thinking. All I have is this one hour when I go to the gym and some time with my gf... I'm afraid when this ends (5 weeks) I wont know what to do in my spare time... Oh I know! Writing my masters thesis....2
-
I'm clearly a little obsessed with Destiny, but it's what helps me unwind at the end of the day. Between working full time, 16 credit hours at school, and a baby girl coming in just a couple of weeks, I have to have something to escape reality for just a little bit sometimes.
Destiny isn't all I play, but it takes up most of the time and the game that - for that last several years at least - brings me the greatest amount of joy. It's the game that has finally made me buckle down and get serious about finishing school work on game dev.
Other activities include podcasts - which I am devouring nearly constantly - and movies. I have about 20 podcasts I'm currently actively subscribed to with another 20 that I have on reserve in case I get through my list too fast. As for movies, I watch them when I have time. Recent watches that I've enjoyed were Destroyed, On The Basis Of Sex, and Aquaman.3 -
Close all internet shops tabs, find yourself a nice chill music like Erykah Badu or some ASMR record, measure your time (I use toggl) and have your tasks for today well planned. And set yourself deadlines. Short deadlines. When you fail to fit in one, you get to punish yourself in a mild way. When you do your tasks on time you get candy :D or some other shit like a good coffee or go out somewhere
-
Have you ever had to fire someone? or get someone fired?
I’m thinking about a time when I should have made sure a guy was fired.
He had no business leading a project, and I knew this early on when he suggested connecting a public frontend straight to a clients’ ERP.
I wasn’t on his project but I ended up cleaning up his mess when shit hit the fan.2 -
The time that we dedicate to the things and people that we love/like, when it's enough?
The question is generic and for good reason.
Yesterday, semi-seriously, my gf asked me when we'll have a baby, I answered, seriously, that it's gonna be when I'll feel ready to share the daily time with someone as demanding as another family member growing up.
Now, between job time, hobbies time and girlfriend (gonna marry soon) time the time is already tight and because I'm self sufficient about happiness and kind of a loner I don't share really much time with her most of the days, and from this realisation from her side she broke into crying.
From that experience I understood that there might be need some adjustment on my side.
But on another side I'm puzzled of how other families deal with this, because though my life I've seen couples/married-people that had not really much interactions with each other on a daily basis and seemed fine with living like that.
So knowing this context, what's your experience about this phenomenon through your life time?4 -
I just woke up after 2 hours sleeping. I feel like I have been in a car wreck. JESUS CHRIST THIS IS WHY I DON'T SLEEP WHEN IT'S STILL DAY.. Now I have to wait some time to clear my head to do some coding..
-
What to do when for a single issue, multiple contributors send out different PRs doing the same stuff?
I feel bad to close a PR without merging when they have spent there time in it.
I never expected that my repo will ever attain such dilemma for PRs.6 -
First time me ranting about PHP.
First time. I still really like the language.
But what the fuck.
I am debugging, I narrowed down bug to my validator.
I played with php console and debugger and narrowed down to that one offending line.
Narrowing down to smaller and smaller examples when it dosent work, confusion and tension grows in me.
And then it hit me.
Confusion got to apogeum.
Anyone, if you know the anwser, please tell me.
WHAT THE FUCK?
maybe thats task for stack overflow? Hrm...
No, I dont have time to explicitly tell what I tried to google and spend 4 hours to have all checkmarks ticked before asking lol39 -
I havent touched swing in months, and now when i need to come back to it everything is Windowbuilder. Trouble is, nothing is included in Eclipse and I don't have time to go around hunting for the packages I need. Netbeans is marginally better, but GODDAMN its frustrating when it auto-gens code that you have to use N++ to edit...2

Since ive started college my will to program has become non-existant. Im a self taught programmer since 12, it used to be MY thing and i loved it. I used to spend hours a day just programming personal projects because i love it. However since college has been getting serious with this being my junior year and having part-time contract work i dont "love it" as much. Im a little scared, i have no time to just code for fun and when i do have time it feels like work because thats the only other time i code.
What should i do guys, i dont want to fall out of love with programming, it's part of who i am and i can feel im losing it.1 -
I have an alias on my machine called les which is for when I mistype less, it emails my friend les with the contents of the file and says 'next time I see you, tell me what this said'.
He gets a few emails a day. -
For all the cheap-ass sys admins:
I wouldn’t pay 100$ a year to apple just to have push notifications when my server fucks up or an user fill my support form but I want to know that in real time but I have iPhone(forget about FCM).
So I downloaded pushbullet to my phone and integrated its API in my server and when something important happen I get completely free notification which (thanks to url schemes in ios) redirect me to my server administration app.
Note: I used xamarin for my management app to be ready for the moment when I switch back to android.2 -
When I only want to code, but university LaTeX bullshit burns my time 😭 they dont even have clear rules.
Not to mention that their formatting rules make my work look like shit I would never read myself.5 -
Does anybody has an idea what to "code" when you have too much free time? I am done with school and waiting for my university acceptance. No Websites.
TL;DR
Project ideas?13 -
love it when client supports comes to me and tells me the entire conversation they had with a client when i just need wathever request they had. i could have been done with this feature in the time you took giving me 90% useless information.2

The best surprise is when I restart using one of my scraper apps which I haven't used in a long time ... And it still works.
My Dilbert one I haven't updated in years which implies they have not made any changes to the site or added anymore protection for at least 5yrs1 -
I have to wake up in the morning ....for a meeting.........
When was the last time I woke up in the morning? Oh that was before having the baby. -
I'm down to write multi dimensional Git. I'm tired of losing the code that I wrote in my dream to go up in smoke every time when I woke up.
I just want to commit and push it to the dimension that I'm livin'. So that I'll have access to the code that I wrote in my dream.3 -
!dev
fuck call of duty and activision. I finally had time to play with my friends when suddenly I had to download a 56 GB update. Why the fuck does every update have to be big? Then after that monstrous update, if you want to play multiplayer, you still need an additional 22 GB for a multiplayer pack which you already have. This has to be the most clueless company out there. I should have uninstalled this game a long time ago.11 -
I have noticed this lately that majority of the time when I talk about something, people thing that I'm being sarcastic.
I don't know what went wrong. It must be them not me.3 -
If I had a fucking dollar for every time someone interrupts me at work. I literally get bothered in the hour by people in QA that have nothing better to do ( not taking shots at QA ). What irks me is when they continue to chat up a storm behind me with someone else when I finally get the point across.1
-
I can't help but smirk when my company gets a project that requires knowledge on something I warned them about over half a year ago. This happens regularly but every time we have to get that knowledge during the project, costing the customer additional money.
When will management learn that training your employees will benefit them :(3 -
How often have you seen a manager working as an individual contributor when things are urgent and the assigned engineer is sick!!!
Such type of managers are the rarest species that can be found on Earth.
I hope everyone gets such managers and then, all Devs gonna have a great time working in tons of interesting and feasible projects. -
Have no words. Just got an email from a recruiter for a 6 months contract in a vendor company for a position....the final customer will be my current employer where I am already working as a full time employee. No mistakes because it is a very specific role.
At least please read the CV when you have one!2 -
Finally have some side project in mind but now I don't have the time. When I had time I was not well mentally to do anything. When is the cycle going to break? Work - burnout - recover - repeat 😣2
-
Why am I not super rich of being a dev my friends ask me. Well, it's Saturday, I have now worked around 75 hours this week. When am I supposed to have time for all of that develop my own million dollar fail?2
-
You know you should tidy up some space when your ssd has more space left then your hard drive
I still have a second hard drive, but I'm too lazy to move either my steam games or my programs over there...
The time will hit me when the last GB has been used1 -
idk how people have time/passion to work on side-projects after work.
or is it just me, who always wants to build something, but ultimately feels stuck, tired and hopeless.
how do I get back to that state when developing stuff was fun?5 -
When you started your first programming job was it easier or harder than you pictured because I feel like I'm no where near ready (although I'm not out of high school just yet so I have time to prepare but still)3
-
Standup feels like a waste of time most days. I’ll tell you when I make progress or if I hit a roadblock, you don’t have to ask about it daily. Especially on longer term projects.4
-
I'm sure I speak for a lot of us when I say: LET ME HAVE A LIFE!!!
Management treating us like candy machines, wanting more and more features, learn this, learn that, learn complex material. HEY I'D LIKE TO ENJOY MY TIME AFTER WORK YA KNOW.
etc.4 -
I don't think I have this syndrome, I don't think I am great at anything and the surrounding world shows that.
I have to work really hard, more than others to get an average result.
What cheers me up is that even tho I am subaverage in everything, when I spend the extra time, I often get the avg result and when you are following your results, when you see there is progress, it feels better1 -
A client wanted his site to be finished earlier. The boss said ok if the client would pay more, and he did. However, a FE dev got sick (virus infection he said) and would have to rest for an extended period of time. The PM came in yesterday and said, "Alex (me), we are running out of time so you will have to take (FE dev's name)'s position because you said that you learned basic html/css when you were in high school." The PM left and close the door before I can turn my head away from the screen and say something (I was like WTF?). One of my BE colleague, who had been asked to do similar sh**t before when a FE guy got sick, pat on my shoulder and said, "Alex, you have won the lottery this time." Q.A.Q..I have just finished a navbar with 4 tabs using Uikit, it took me 90 min already.2

Brand new day, time to have a new mindset.
I need to finish the big project for the big boss, and fix things with my wife. Wish me luck fellas
Thinking of shaving my beard to remind my wife of when we first met so she will be tricked into loving me for the time being.4 -
I have dual boot windows 10 and Ubuntu but some time when I using Ubuntu writing permission is not allowed on NTFS disk and some time it does Why???2
-
When I started using Ubuntu for the first time it took like 3 tries to install the OS. After successful installation, all it took was two days and I had somehow corrupted everything. Next time I managed to keep everything together a bit longer, maybe a few weeks. Now, multiple fresh OS installations later, I am happy to say that I have not conducted any major fuck-ups in years. It's the learning curve, yo.4

Is there more useless and stupid feature in a laptop than a touch screen ?
I have one in my work machine and only time I "use" it is when I accidently click some shit while closing the lid.
Pain in the ass.
To think that some people actually are paying extra $ for it.5 -
mom: stop wasting time on Facebook (still she says like that and I do not have a fb account)
wife: she cant stand me working from home, and when she is home she hangs on my shoulder to see what I am typing. a big distraction. -
So I don't use Facebook, but I had an account and I decided to delete it.
Before I do that, I tried to use the tool they have to get all the information they have about me.
They said it will take sometime and I will get an email when its done so that I can download it.
It's been more than 24 hours.
Is it taking all this time because they have so much information on me??6 -
I am currently a backend developer at a company in the financial services industry. In January I approached the owners that I wanted to discuss a pay increase due to new skills I have o trained that they want. At first they were willing to meet the next day but the next morning wanted me to wait until review time. I told I was willing to wait as long as they would give me a date and time. Due to last review season being blind sided and having to have my review 10 minutes after getting back from vacation without warning. It hey did they didn’t have the times schedule yet so I waited till last week to request the time again since it’s one month away and they basically said we aren’t giving you a time we will call you when we get your time. I think they are stalling because I’m highly leveraged now and that don’t want to face the reality that I am due for a pay raise. What do you guys think4
-
when instead of coding one spends far too much time on expanding the syntax highlighting for better readability...
I mean, yeah it took me like 2h, but now I have a vague idea on how to quickly add things which improve readability for me.
emacs config ftw. -
When I found out that the app I have developed basically in my free time to automate most of the monotone tasks that were needed at my first job, was being sold to customers as utility tool for our devices without me getting even a penny extra!2
-
Lol. Just discovered I still have my account. Created this account when I was like 15. Feels crazy to look at this. Haven't been online for years... I still remember reading through this when I was in school. Now I'm studying in university. Guess it's time to go now?2

Anyone else find slack a time waster unless you are actively working on a team? I feel it fails when used for a user group: l have left most slack teams because it is like repeatedly looking in the fridge and not finding anything interesting.4
-
I have this irrational cringe every time that people say infinite when they actually mean unlimited. I hear and read it everywhere, multiple times per day. In English and in German.
"You can do this infinitely often"
"AI bots have infinite APM"
"The number of items you can store is infinite"
Aaaaargh! Stop it! It hurts! 😫22 -
Why the FUCK is my VPN logging me out after a certain time. Its not like that I have to drive +4h to some remote location fix it when it cucks up at the wrong moment!
-
When did you guys start to learn a new language?
Right now I only know C++ and I'd like to learn a new language but I never have the time8 -
Why do I develop Drupal websites for clients when I know they are going to contact me for any content update? I show them how to add, edit, delete, and I still get content update requests. I'm developing things right now, I don't have time to add your blog post, thanks!8
-
Nobody has any use from a 80% finished project (so not finished at all) except it was a lot of time and money to get to that point. Oh boy I need to make progress on about 500 different projects to get them to a useful stage.
Also very important lesson: Dont have your anxiety take over when facing the "omg I have a 6 digit number of things on my 2do list" because you can't say no to the "awesome" ideas you have.
Also: I have made a rule for myself that prevents me from starting/working on a side project when I have important deadlines on main projects2 -
I am I the only one who doesn't like sprint demos? I don't care what someone else worked on. Yeah they wrote some code that does stuff, great. I don't have time to understand it and when I have to fix it I learn it.
-
My biggest flaw when working in IT: I will refuse to prioritize time- consuming work with minimal added value (cf premature optimization, 0.001% edge cases) when I have a backlog of work that will add much more, obvious value and I will not budge to manager or architect power-plays and tendencies to micromanage my responsibilities, even if it may eventually end up getting me in trouble.2
-
Today I discovered a new feature of my electric toothbrush that I've had for years...
Sort of obvious afterwards but when I put it back on the charging stand, it automatically turns off.
Guess now I have a reason to put it back each time after use though2 -
I get irritated when I feel I've wasted time I could have used for making progress on code. Now being required to attend a 2 day conference, that I will not be using anything from, anytime soon, all I'm doing is waiting for this to finish and get back to code.
-
I have hard time focusing at all. I can't even focus 100% when I am driving my bike. My mind tend to go other issues or thoughts when I am doing anything in my life.
Any tip to improve my focus on the current task.14 -
Was slightly panicking at work today when I couldn't reach my server at home anymore, though it might have crashed or something. Turns out my isp changed my fucking IP address! It hasn't done that in years! WHY NOW? Ugh, time to update *all* the dns records I suppose...2
-
Every time a new hype thing appeared, I was annoyed, like "kids these days and their tiktoks".
But at some point in time, this pattern of mine changed completely. I don't know how it happened, I don't know when it happened, but now I experience... acute nostalgia?
I miss Elon Musk and his twitter fanbase. I miss tiktok. I feel like a time traveller who went into their past, which is our present, to experience the cultural landmarks once again, because their time here is limited, and tomorrow they will have to go back.
I miss my autism problems and mental health uphill battle. I miss avengers and thanos. I miss metaverse.
Oh, and also... I miss you.4 -
I hate installing things with pip. It has to be the worst set up for a package installer. About 75% of the time something I'm installing fails and I have to look up why. Coming from npm and yarn where it just works I can't stand the disconnect I get when trying to get into something and I have to configure stuff for the first 3 hours before I can actually do anything.2
-
I hate reactive management.
It's when your boss instills fake urgency every time a client asks for something close to impossible, or <x> competitor is doing something in a different way he deems the best.
Everything must be dropped, the sprint put on hold, fuck requirements, everybody has to do overtime, why are you not contributing?, why are you going home when you have to?, fuck do I care you have a 1 hour commute - this <y> thing has to be made by sunrise tomorrow or it's a showstopper.
And it's never a showstopper. 90% of the time the feature gets dropped one-two months down the line.1 -
I really shouldn't use devRant before going to sleep, but that's at least currently the only own and peaceful time I have during week days because of really busy school and work schedule. (Yey, it's weekend!)
If I don't realize that I should stop using devRant at night it moves my sleeping time so that I don't get enough sleep or I won't be able to wake up in a timely manner.
I just immerse in the reading, commenting or even ranting so that I forget the passing of time. Making thing worse is that when I'm writing something my inner perfectionism wakes up and I try to make the text as good as possible and so I get more and more active when I should be relaxing and getting ready to sleep.
Do not worry about my sleep. I'll probably just start to read a book instead. But when it's a good time to use devRant then... 🤔
When or how do you use devRant?
What kind of sleep routines do you have? -
I have a job with health insurance but I’m so stressed out that I overeat and so busy that I don’t have time for prolonged exercise to burn more calories. Ironic that I was healthier when I worked for a diet and exercise company 100% remote that didn’t have a health plan vs driving to work for one that does have a health plan. This feels really upside down.5
-
Sometimes I envy those people whose work is purely clock on / clock off, meaning those that can leave work and switch off to that entirely (delivery driver; mcdonalds etc). Having the time to focus on other things. I have never had that luxury, work consumes far too much of my time, even when not working i am thinking about it. I want the time to pursue my other love which is music, and playing my bass. I like my work but sometimes i fucking hate this path i'm on. Oh well FML.4
-
Ah yes i also love when you have so much shit to do for college where you are supposed to be studying developer stuff, that you havent written a single line of code in the past week because you dont have time.1
-
I fucked up this time...
I got in a hackaton that I don't have the time for because I have 4 delayed projects...
Too late to get out as I'll fuck up my team, and I'm pretty late with the projects already.
I got in a month ago when I was relatively free, but now with each day new responsibilities arise and I feel like I'll never handle them.
About the projects, one is delayed because of broken communication with the client, one is huge and one is the silliest one I've seen in a while.
There are times when I just want to stop existing xD1 -
Hm... so my screen time makes me happy and so does building apps that do work for me.
And when the weather is nice, I go out...
So even though I have a lot of screen time, I am good right?
https://ted.com/talks/...
P.S that's an app I wrote that gets me the transcript since reading is faster than watching a talk (I now watch only if I want to see the slides/pictures).2 -
when that time comes, and I have an empty queue, I'll spend the day on desktop doing: right click - refresh..
it's been a while since checked what my background looks like!1 -
Hello dear fellow programmers,
Lately I'm faced with an issue: i can't code. It takes me a really long time to get my codeengine running and it stops on the first occasion, it either be a cigarette pause, a question from a coworker or what ever.
I love code and I have a blast when I start but I have a hard time starting it.
What to do? I'm a bit at a loss here1 -
From time to time our internet slows down to 10kbit and latency goes over 1000ms or just cuts out completely and everyone starts screaming at me to fix it, what am I?! The fucking ISP's tech. support?!!! When it goes down it goes down, I can't do anything about it, I keep reminding everyone to keep a copy of their stuff on the NAS so they have access to it when this happens, no one ever listens to me! The only person that uses the NAS is me...
-
How does everyone get their team members to shut the fuck up and use IRC once in a while? I don't mind talking but if you're doing it *all* the time, *even when I have headphones on* I don't have any time to do actual work.1
-
Never ever have to sleep, eat, shit, piss anything like that. Every damn time I do that I loose the focus/idea I had when I started.
-
Thanks for your email and any other information you have a great time and consideration of this email in the end the game and the rest of my life and death and resurrection I am not able and willing I am not a good time and I have to be able to do the same time and effort and I am going through my resume to the inbox to be in a career change it back on track with you to see the profile photo album and a couple weeks...
When you just click through the autocomplete...4 -
I feel stupid when I have trouble calculating how big a UPS I need to keep my NAS from just dying during a power outage instead of safely powering off
Then I just dont bother getting one... and get pissed off next time it happens and the cycle continues
Now I have other stuff I'd want to get a UPS for too and the math is even worse for my tiny brain3 -
I can’t describe how good it feels to have a project again.
And the pain of having a bug that I literally can’t fucking solve for hours even after asking for help which fucking sucked cause that was a waste of time to only realize it was because I WAS USING THE WRONG ACCESS MODIFIER is immense and fucking euphoric when I figure it out and I can clear all my browser tabs and don’t have to stare at that same fucking error again.
I’m just having a really good time with it and watching it grow. -
When my boss can't figure out how to fix something, he'll tell me to do it. It's annoying because he "works" on the issue for months and by the time I get it, I only have a few hours until I get off work but he needs it done by the end of the day
-
Why use a standard tab width when we can all have our own unique preferences? Let's make it a surprise party every time we open a file. I just love adjusting my editor settings for every repo. Keeps me on my toes!2
-
The feeling when you make the requested changes to a website only for it to be disposed immediately because someone decided to push an older Backup to the FTP Server.
Like I have all the time in the world to do it again FML.2 -
So I work with an old ICT Responsible.
Today he wanted some information about the internet.
He takes the phone and start calling...
I was like what are you doing ? Can't you just send them an e-mail ?
He said "no, calling someone is more time efficient and quicker"
So he is there calling an internet provider after closing time waiting...
Music playing... still waiting...
After 5 minutes the call is ended telling that they are closed...
Next he was "well I will send an email then"
Like wtf. How is that efficient and faster ? You could have send the mail and finish any other task... What is wrong with old people and calling everybody for small stuff.
When you call someone, they have to litterally drop what they are doing and answer the call. Just send emails and let them anwser when they have time dammit !6 -
I have a Rubik’s cube that I solve when I need to clear my mind. That thing passes time SERIOUSLY well.2

tl;dr: crop-rotating projects
I have 3 concurrent projects because I can only remember how I felt about two of them, so this way when I've had enough of pygame's bullshit I can happily continue working on php without my hatred towards asp.net stopping me in any way. By the time I start hating php I will have forgotten why I hate asp and be ready to continue on that. -
I really hate when you get rejected in an interview and get no feedbacks and even worse when you reply HR with a question and they not answer you at all and ignore you.
You invest your time for them and then they not even bother to answer you. This is heartful and I have no place to go and can’t complain.
I feel used.3 -
It is Saturday 19:30 and I am spending my time writing functions for save/load data in a binary tree. Recursion and fscanf are not a good combo so far, but that is the task. When the code is done I have to get some math done.
-
When you have time, can you squeeze this project in?
Look, I don't have time ever. Projects are scheduled months in advance. Nothing ever finishes ahead of schedule. If you want to bump another project, just say it! -
Sometimes I feel like going back in time and changing some things. If life would have a debugger would know when I am doing a mistake.3
-
Spending days on a recursion problem and never solving it. That was a low time for me-especially when I looked at how short and elegant the solution was online. I've recovered now and have gotten better at it, but damn that's one thing I need master or it'll haunt me to I die.1

Do you listen to music when you have to be productive during a fixed period of time? What kind of music then? Or do you prefer a quiet environment? I am curious about what are your pro-life-tips devs.7

Can someone help me to get some good practices with expressjs/sequelize combinations?
I managed to find how to not have all the models in the same js page and how to organize the routing but when I look the time it took me to find, I would like to don't have to search now 😂 -
My respect for anyone goes up 10x when they mention that they have been a freelancer dev their entire career so far.
Partly because I tried freelancing early on, and I felt ashamed of asking money from clients over and over (they never made on-time payments) and that was the factor that made me jump onto a full-time job for companies.2 -
I can't get anything done
I know I want or have to do something, but I always waste my time on something completely unrelated.
Afterwards I feel bad, and when I notice what I should've done and what I actually did I get a bit depressed
I just don't have the self-discipline for this shit, and I have no idea how to get it3 -

At the dentist AGAIN. This time a proper oral surgeon. Informed me they are ONLY doing novacaine today when the referring dentist said I would have to be put under ffs. It's like these people don't listen.
I wonder if I can get a refund when they *also* realize I don't respond to novacaine.1 -
Studying and working at tge same time is hard. I woke up before seven, spend 6 hours studying for exam I have tomorrow, now I'm going to office, and when I get back at 7pm I have to finish project for tomorrow and study some more for exam. Hate days like this one4

I'm considering leaving my current job, but am afraid that I might have a hard time transitioning into a new employer given the pandemic and all.
Has anyone switched jobs during this time and have any advice for someone looking to do the same? Or should I really wait until the next year or so when it's "safer" to go outside?4 -
hi guys im new with app development and i have small question because this is really stressful for me,when you guys learn recycler view for the first time is that hard?or am i being stupid because its hard for me10

Part 4 of Mathematica fails that I've been saving for awhile.
Very consistently, the first time I try to save a graphic, it works fine. The second time, it changes the focus to a different tab, but works. The third time, it quits, but does save the graphic.
When I have >=10 graphics to save, this is pretty annoying, especially as if something was saved normally and not via the prompt when quitting Mathematica normally, after crashing it is no longer saved. -
How do you plan before small software changes?
I have some extremely iterative approach where I change one function or one variable at a time, like a headless chicken. I am not planning beforehand which modules or functions I need to change but start from somewhere and like a linked list, I am moving on until the end.
But I feel like it is wasting my time. What is your approach when you want to have let's say -50 line of code changes?5 -
Is it a bad sign when after an interview they say they have more candidates and that they'll get back to me after?
I need to prepare better for next time, will be ok5 -
I'm in that position during the holidays when i really just want to spend all my time coding something interesting and exciting but instead I'm stuck in this limbo of empty ideas and wasted time. I want to build my skills but i feel like i don't have anything i interesting enough to work on. How do you guys handle this? Help.3

When my mom asked what would I like to have - sweet corn or Avacado.
I said - Let's document all the possible approaches and setup some time to discuss pros and cons.2 -

I love it when the bower_component/addon-name/addon-name.js ~ is what I expect it should be, but I still have to open a finder window and check every time to make sure. : /3

I'm sure like a lot of Devs of my generation, CS education didn't really exist when I was at school. All my knowledge has been self taught over time.
I think the best thing you can have is a good mentor and the opportunity to learn from your mistakes. -
Do you feel that mobile development destroys your phone battery? At least when developing React-Native, I use a cable most of the time and thus, the phone gets charged.
After some time it feels like the battery is draining faster. I experienced this with the second phone already.
Makes most sense if you have a separate dev phone, I guess...6 -
I used to love coding. I have ASD and it was one of those rare things I could just do for hours without realising the time. I used to do my own projects, or at least plan them.
Now it's my job to code (& design when I don't have a pleb project, software engineer). I still kinda like to code but as I *have to* code, I just hate it.
Every fun thing that turns to work just turns to torture. Maybe I'll break my arm slipping this winter and have to have an extended sick leave...3 -
When you wanna update yourself from jquery and learn react but your boss says its more profitable for the company to keep working with wordpress so no time for coding related research. So now i have to do it in the very little free time i have at home 😭1
-
i have experience in mobile dev for 3 years, today i got interview for coding test,it have 10 question,i cant answer question 1 so it stuck there until time out.the question is so fcking simple but because i more focus on framework and only have basic in kotlin/dart so i really like dumb people when interview, the 3 years experience is gone just like noting, even i forget toString use () ( so toString() ) because usually vscode give suggest the method

It's 2016! How do I still not have a favorite IDE?!
I guess the Jet Brains IDEs are my "favorite". More like a fallback. When I can't decide. Which is almost all the time. -
By looking at data from an app that analyses my smartphone uses, I came to know that I spend most of my time going through GitHub notifications and Emails in comparison to WhatsApp or social sites. Even when I don't have a notification I open GitHub to check.
I really need to take a break I think!1 -
I hate it when you work your ass off for the company product and they don’t even care to send the salary on time. I mean how can you expect your developers to be productive when you don’t even let them have their monthly dose of dopamine. Sometimes this delay can extend to more than one month so young developers out there, please make your decision wisely.3

I want to be more tech savvy. I love programming, am fluent in Java and have no problem in pickung up new languages from time to time. But I’m really not a tech person. I always feel like I lose my grip on things when it comes to servers, web stuff and databases.2
-
I still don't know what back-end vs front-end is. I have a hard time understanding terms like that when it comes to programming jobs; I just like to program. Could anyone help explain these to me and give examples?8

Going through a cosmic conundrum where I am starting to question the very existence of time fabric and possibilities of parallel universes having infinite us...
P.S.: when you have watched enough of Rick & Morty 😂7 -
Being jobless for a long time is frustrating, but when you're now in a situation where you really need a job within the month, life has become a horror story. My anxiety is off the charts. I can't even focus on learning and improving my skills. I don't have any savings to be able to afford more time.5
-
thank you for unexpectedly changing your code i included on your recommendation and now all of my modules are broken!
even if this is just a side project i hate when others break my shit and i don't even have the time to fix it.1 -
Oh for fucks sake! Why so we have threading when we synchronize EVERYTHING with a singleton... and when I actually show you that even unthreaded spaghetti code runs 40% faster under real life conditions than your shit you just brush it of because I'm still at university and don't know what I'm talking about... And not because changing it would require money or time we don't have... no, just because I “lack the necessary experience with such things.“
-
I think I was always meant to code. And even though I started late, I have never been bored of doing it. Since I have started writing code, it's one thing that has driven me like travelling to another dimension. Time flies when you code. And moreover for sometime you forget all the stress in this world and concentrate on the stress you've created. 😂

When sales throws you under a bus because you never answer emails promptly about their pet project, yet multiple emails to them asking for a specification for that project go unanswered. When I mentioned the multiple emails the vp of company advised that they do not have the time for trivial stuff such as emails.

Every, single, time, Windows, updates, and reboot...
I do not know what I did wrong with this Mint. It works perfectly until I reboot to Windows. So Windows update itself, I have to reboot and, after finishing all Windows boots, when I come back to Linux it does not work anymore.9 -
Today. Today was my worst meeting. We had to meet to work on our website together. I said I couldn't make it, because I have other important things to do besides the website and we still have plenty of time to work on the damn thing. "You can't f'ing skip meetings." "I know you have other things, but you made a commitment." Right. But you can decide when to have f'ing meetings based around your schedule.1

I either underestimate or overestimate my deadlines...There hasn't been a single time when I have stated deadline in a standup for a feature and finished it on that day...It's either days before deadline or mostly few days or even weeks past it😓4

Wow companies can be so inconsiderate when interviewing candidates. They’ve scheduled me for interviews at a days notice, and when I can’t make the interview they blame it on me!! Like who tf do they think they are!?! They hold all the power I guess. Ughh so frustrated with their interview process. This is the first time I have told an interviewer that I don’t think the company is a good fit for me, thanked them for their time and left. I’ve got bigger fish to fry.4

By not having a social life 😅
EDIT: except for that one time a month when I go to a club and get totally wasted and actually have friends for a day. -
People must be happy when they have no job from last year and suddenly get a very good offer..... I also got an offer yesterday.... my family is happy.
But I'm not sure if I'm happy. Because, now, less time to open source development, less chance to take the independent decisions, less time for life, less time for family & friends.5 -
Hey y’all! I’m having a good time with golang so far! However, it’s so damn frustrating to have to give it admin permissions every time I need to restart my program when making anything with networking. Is there any work arounds to this without giving my account admin?7
-
Don't work with time, work with target, my father taught me that. It seems similar to don't stop when you are tired but when you are done!!!
Well that helped me when I started my dev career but over the years I had to be wise how I apply the rule so I don't have assholes sucking life out of me in disguise.1 -
My number one problem whenever I need to write original unique code is this question: "What's the next line supposed to say?"
I just really have a hard time knowing what the next thing is I'm supposed to write, even when I know pretty well what the thing is supposed to do.
Anyone else? -
I worked around 16hours straight, freelance project with a very tight deadline for a big company when I was still young and didn't have a lot of money, and experience. Got paid in time so all good :)

This moment when you have to read a 3k lines long Service class to plug a new process on the legacy one, and wonder if it wouldn't be just better to rewrite stuff in parallel instead of reusing and bending the old one
Everything is so tightly coupled that I would have to refacto all this and extract methods but I don't have time for that, and the chance of breaking stuff is insanely high -

*When I have lots of free time to code*
My mind: I am so tired for working... Let's finish those project some other time dude.
*When the day before my exam*
My mind: Hey! You have some unfinished projects...Come lets finish those. Don't be lazy...1 -
I have not been able to work for quite some time already due to a chronic condition getting worse. Even when I have been at work I wouldn't get anything done due to chronic pain (a literal pain in the ass), so this year hasn't been very fun so far. I cannot sit nor stand for extended periods of time. I just want to be able to work again! :C5
-
That moment when you've finished all features for a project at the end of the day and the PM still doesn't have anything for you to do tomorrow. Here's to hoping that I finally get time to improve our software stack!
-
Taht moment when you finally have time for that github project, when you done all your changes requested, and you're proud that your local tests are all green... you commit into that project, you push it real hard , long and passionately deep...
and then i apparently hit travis in the nose... Cause he keeps running for -undefined ipunchedtravisonhisnoseapparently build runner forever mypullrequestwillneverseethelightofday continuousidiocy -
When you generally have bad day, and they are lots of lots of really minor annoyances that ultimately drive you pissed and you would want to make rant about it but at same time... you dont have solid topic becouse its just milion of minors, nothing major, day as usuall I guess...

I have for a very long time wondered about, what do people do when using git and databases? If I locally add new columns to the db, how in the world would you easily make the change in production?
Do I really have to manually do it or take the time to make scripts for it?2 -
fucking muscle memory added a '^' to "git reset --hard head".
at least it gets faster when you have to write it a second time, but I lost about 20 files -
Helping out of goodwill with the time I have only to receive nothing but terrible attitude.
I know it can get frustrating but don't throw that frustration on me. Especially when I'm genuinely helping out and going out of the way to do so. -
While I writing PHP I have to think of Haskell all the time, how nice everything would be with Haskell and I dream of the time when I can be with Haskell again. <3

Just what is life
1st I love developing Web Apps
2nd I hate when it has bugs (Always does Everyone does)
3rd More hate for Security related bugs
So I started bug hunting so that even I can make developers hurt I thought I might find peace here
But here we fucking have SQL Injections which are not really that bad easy peasy
But we also have special kind of SQL Injections the Boolean Based ones (Medium Level Demons) and also The Time Based SQL Injections (Medium Level Demon with lots of health consumes too much time has a repetitive process and we have to wait a lot also if you have network lag you are doomed)
No its nice story till here but here it fucking ends the happiness I mean my luck is worst kind of fucking thing anybody ever can have.
I got a mix of both Demons;_;
A Time-Based Boolean SQL Injections yess fuckety amounts of fucking time wasted and redundant fucking process also to make matters worst the fucking famous tool #SQLMAP doesn't work in my case -
Windows apparently does reboots for updates n stuff outside your normal time of usage nowadays.
Windows apparently also thinks that your normal usage shouldn't be over 12 hours.
So now i have to decide if I'm more in the mood for random updates in the morning when i need to get shit done (ugh) or at night when i have finally time to relax. -
How to get extra project if I have a full time?
I am in a trouble which like can't focus when coding....… It makes me feel bad when actually touch on the code.. I use laravel as back end, but turns out I still have quite problem, not like easy job when I was using the 5.0 version of laravel
It sucks when didn't get anything solved... -
I am anxious about the phones audio not playing through the headphones, but through to the speaker, when connecting in public. Even when the Bluetooth icon shows connected.
I have to remove the headphones and check, every time.
It is only me ?6 -
Fucking spent a full day fixing a very big issue.
Very happy to have found a solution.
Time to pack my shit up and go home.
Realize that I didn't git pull.
Seems like I fixed that bitch issue last night when I couldn't sleep.
Since I did not sleep I might have been too tired to recall that.
🤔 Guess I'll kms -
I'm going to have test on monday about this one subj and today was the last theory class before the test. When the teacher asks about the time complexity of an algorithm in the best case some people reply "when n is 1". I can hear the teacher facepalming already LoL

21 hours, i worked most with sane concentration.
I remember when i was fresh in programing, felt for the first time that i have challenge to solve and it was a chain reaction i kept doing tasks 1 by 1 and volla 21 hours are passed.
I came office at 10 am and left 7 am other day.
After Finnish my work i felt so relive like i have concurred the world lol.
It was a feeling like i have all the time in the world and this is what i am passionate about so all i have to dive in this field.
During this session when i gained the momentum of work i could see that the production become double triple as long as you get sync with your brain. Felt like you are in some other time space where you spend more time but in reality its less same as we dream. -

What do you guys usually do when you have zero work assigned? Im on an internship in this company and I sometimes finish the work faster than they estimate so I find myself doing nothing for like 2-3 days. Any advice on what to do during this time?1

I have to switch from FreeBSD to Linux for a project because the implementation has to be done on a Linux box. So I now see the deep internals of Linux for the first time in 10 years and it still feels so unclean and chaotic. It feels so even more then I remember it to feel when I have left it. You guys are sure that this is the future?3

I noted music is disaster for my work. It distracts I loose my focus and efficiency decrease also.
mood swingings when I listen too much music I have a hated feeling l. So I decided to quite listening music during work.

I got called for a 1 on 1 with my manager. Nothing out of the ordinary, I thought. We have those from time to time. This time it was because I've been losing the trust of my team. I haven't been communicating with them very effectively and it's taken a toll on our working relationship.
We talk on slack when we run into issues, and we give a daily update at the end of the day and during stand up in the morning.
Anyone have any suggestions on ways I can increase the communication to help earn my teams trust back?9 -
When I have to update my APIs and Libraries with my poor internet connection; Hence, cannot google for solutions for my problems while the download is going on because opening websites takes a shit load of time.

Working from 7:00 to 15:00,after work don't have that much time to workout, so I try ti weighted push-ups every minute or so from 2pm till 3..biggest problem is when the code embraces me and I forget that I should work out a bit.. And yes, I work from home3
-
When ever I start working on a project of some kind I usually find myself cursing the code, cursing myself and asking why I couldn't just go into something easier. But without fail, every single time I get the project working for the first time, I have a massive grin on my face and feel like a child at an amusement park for the first time. All the bad feelings I had towards the code dissolves and makes me excited to keep moving forward.1

When you want to improve your life but time isn't enough because you have to earn for a living. To pay bills,l and necessity. It's far easier to find low wage job than pursuing to become a software engineer. Sometimes I eat once in a day and 6 hrs of sleep because I have to improve my programming skills.

I am struggling to have a holiday that includes no work. I keep on panicking at random times that I'll forget to code if I go any longer. Very silly fear I know but it's happening. I dont wanna feel like I have to rediscover my path around my projects when I get back to them. So i think of their structures and things needed to complete them from time to time just to make sure I am on track.11
