Client: This works correctly, but I don’t like the code.
Me: What exactly do you not like?
Client: There are barely any lines of code. You need to add more to make it better.
I...I don’t know what to say.25 -
I was in school and I got bored. I opened two command prompts and did what any scammer would do.
I went to the root of the drive and did a tree. The other window is pinging google infinitely.
After a few seconds, I hear a kid say "Are you hacking the pentagon?". That guy also asked me to hack the Google Play Store. He shall forever think I'm a hacker.35 -
Me: Alright, let's code!
School: Psst. Hey.
Me: What?
School: Remember that assignment from last week?
Me: Oh god please no.
School: Yeah, it's tomorrow. And you have a Geography exam next Monday. You love geography, right?
Me: Please, no, I want to become a programmer, not a--
School: Shush... It's okay. Programming can wait. You want a to get a job, right? What would they say when they see your poor Geography?
Me: That doesn't even... Okay, fine, I'll do it...
* two days later *
Me: Fuck me! Finally! Let's do some coding now.
School: Psst. Hey.16 -
Boss throwing up a huge source code that I didn't see before.
Boss: Hey, this is an app from a contractor to do XYZ.
Me: Oh, okay.. so?
Boss: You will continue the code and the maintenance now. How much time do you need to implement X feature?
Me: I need to see the code first, can't say nothing now.
Boss: ok I need estimation now.
Me: *getting nervous* I need to see the fuckening code first. if you want estimation now I would say one year..
Boss: what?
Me: what?18 -
Got a phone call: I got an error, what do I do?
Me: what kind of error?
Her: I closed it.
Me: what did it say?
Her: I don't know, it was a window with "ok" and "cancel"
Me: why didn't you read it?
Her: I don't understand this computer language.
/me dies a little inside.
There is nothing quite as stupid as people who refuse to read their own language as soon as it appears on a screen.
They make those things for a reason.
This happens too often.8 -
Production is down
Me to Customer :What did you do?
Customer: Nothing
Me blurt out: The fuck you didn't!
Customer: ...
Me: ...(fuckfuckfuck)
Customer:... Well, I did run these scripts..
Me: (oh thank Christ)
Me: ok, I'll get right on it (Click)
Me to TeamLead: client called. Their prod is down!
TeamMate: did he say he didn't do anything?
Me:Yes
TeamMate: ..... Every fucking time...14 -
What the fuck!? Did you just fucking say you don't want to discuss API endpoints with me because I'm just a frontend developer? Get the fuck down from your imaginary backend throne and talk to me like the software engineer that I am. That's right, I'm a software engineer too, you fucking asshole. Just because you do backend and I do frontend doesn't mean you can talk down to me. And I swear that the next time you say you made all the work and I just have to "style it" I'll just leave. You can "style it" yourself.34

If I had a child I would name him or her "sudo" so I would be sure he/she would do what I say.

She: We've been together for so long and why are you never romantic??
Me: What do you mean? I can say I Love You in 10 different languages!
She: Awww... Really ?!?

System.out.println("I Love You!");
print "I Love You!"
echo "I Love You!";
say I Love You
puts "I Love You!

Client : your design is not cool. See this ^
*showed me some pretty neat designs pattern*
Me: which type do you want for your application.?
Client : All are pretty cool. Isn't it?
Me : Yes. But you do not need all of them. Right?
Client : Yes.
Me : So, which one.
Client : I'm confused But, this will do.
Me : Sure?
Client : Yes, very much.
After 3 days.
Client : you know what, earlier one was simple one but, best one. Easy to understand. This is (new design) making it complex. I need previous one.
Me : (I knew you'll say that, a**hole.) Just go to setting and select theme section to earlier version.
Client : thank you man.
Me : (You are red listed in my book you a**hole. Say anything else to add/edit and then see.) You are welcome.6 -
Me: *enters password on phone (long PIN)*
Person next to me is looking at my phone WHILE I enter my password, and as I look at him, he doesn't even turn away and even has the nerve to say:
"Wow, why do you have such a long password!"
Μy answer: "Because of security reasons."
What I actually wanted to say:
"Because of pieces of SHIT like you who can't keep their eyes to themselves, even when PASSWORDS are involved, you FUCK! Guess why everytime I enter a password in public, I have to dim my screen and turn my screen sideways? Because of fuckheads like you, not knowing shit about privacy and security! Fuck you!"7 -
Sister's new boyfriend at xmas party: So what do you do for a living?
Me: Well, I would say I'm a "full stack" developer, but what does that even mean anymore right? With the state of front-end development being in a constant state of flux and/or kissing its own ass, and every client demanding their one page website used solely for their phone number be offline first WPA SPA Web 7.0 REST Enabled clusterfuck that requires using at least 65% of the AWS stack, most of it completely uselessly. But hey, Neural Network AI looks good on your "grandma's cookies" website, and for only $9,000 per month you can now set the timer on your oven from your phone. So, man, I guess even though I've now been at it twenty years, even I'm not sure what the fuck it is I do anymore. How about you?
Sister's Boyfriend: I'm unemployed.10 -
$sis: hey $me, can you help me?
$me: Uhm, sure, what's wrong?
$sis. The printer doesn't work..
$me: what does it say?
$sis: what do you mean?
$me: like, when you try to print something, what does it say?
$sis: uhm... idk...where should it say something
$me: On your screen you should be getting an error message right?
$sis (now getting irritated for some reason): no it doesn't..
$me: okay, let me check it out
*I walk to the printer with my sister's laptop and plug in the usb*
*Select printer > click print*
"Printer offline"
$me: was it also saying this before
$sis: uhm...yes
$me: ok
At this point im already getting a bit fed up
$me: are you sure this port is working
$sis: yes, I am sure
Okay, check other ports just to be sure, also don't work.
After about 15 minutes of debugging, turns out she managed to unplug the cable on the printer...
And all I got was a "o thanks"

Dear Android:
I know I'm not on wifi. I get it. Sometimes data coverage isn't amazing or the network is congested. It's cool. You can just flash "no service" and I just won't try. or even "3G" and I'll have some patience. I rember how slow 3G was. It's okay, I'll wait.
But fucking stop showing 4G LTE if you can't make a fucking GET request for a 2kb text file in less than 5 minutes! Fucking really? Don't fucking lie to me with your false hope bullshit, just tell me the truth and I'll probably sigh and say shit and put my phone away.
But fuck you and your progress bar externally stuck in the middle. As if to say you're making progress! Wasting my time!
If you can't download a kilobyte in a 5min period, why even say I have data at all? What good does that do me?23 -
Relatives: What does he do as a job?
Mom: He's an informatician, he tinkers with computers
Me: No, I'm a programmer.
Relatives: Is it computer related?
Me: Yes, but..
Relative: Sounds like an informatician to me.
I'm so tempted to say that I butcher animals, but I'm afraid they'll think I'm a veterinarian.11 -
Dad: What are you doing with your life?
Me: Enjoying it. Can you say the same?
My dad degrades me for my programming because he's from 'that generation.' Fuck him, Imma do what I enjoy, cause I'm damn well sure I don't want to end up like him.13 -
this.rant == "long";
This is something I feel strongly about, I hope you do too...
I fucking hate it when I hear that people don't care about net neutrality (and I've heard people say it). There is little in this world untouched by shitty corporations encroaching on the little good that is left in this world.
Yes the internet is full of edgy teenagers, incompetent Seniors (both old people and Devs) and god knows what else. But you know what? I pay my money to copy and paste code from SO (we ALL do let's not lie to ourselves) and I'm not paying a special fee to look at this content or that or send this type of text to that kind of person.
Now then to the point... On 14th December 2017 the FCC will vote on whether or not to allow companies like Verizon and - dare I say it - Comcast to charge more to access certain sites or block you access altogether and otherwise control what you say and do.
I for one, say FUCK OFF and I hope you do to. If you can, call or otherwise contact your Congressperson - you can do that here: https://house.gov/representatives/... . If you're not from the US, you can still help! https://www.battleforthenet.com has lots of information on what you can do to help.
I hope you'll all join me in shouting as loud as we can and preventing this moronic idea from going through.
Peace.
this.rant.end();rant shout help us help we can end this net neutrality wk79 this isn't related to wk79 but it's important idiot10 -
Marketing coworker: We MUST integrate with XYZ
Me: sure, they have a REST API and OAuth2. What part of our system do you want to integrate with XYZ?
coworker: Emmm... I don't know. Everything
Me: ...okay. What does XYZ even do?
coworker: Emmm... our customers use it, so we have to integrate with them.
Me: fine. I'm reading that XYZ has function ABC and PQR. Which one do our customers use?
coworker: ABC, definitely ABC
...
coworker: Our customers say nothing is working!
*looks into the problem*
Me: That's because they're using PQR and not ABC.

Hey DevRant Community :)
I've been a silence lurker till now, but I really do enjoy scrolling through your new rants everyday, :D ... I'm now quite terrified of my first job interview, but that's alright... I guess... ._.
What I'm trying to say is.... Have a great day everyone :31 -
Sometimes when people ask what I do for I living I say: talks to machines.
Thats what we do, we know the langauage to tell the machines what to do, how cool isnt that??8 -
A Monday morning poem
I enter the bureau, feeling all relaxed and well,
my colleague looks up:
"Abandon all hope, welcome to hell."
This indeed, he doesn't say,
his face only twists a little in dismay:
"I need that schematic, did you finish it yet?
And there also some tests I'd like to get -
how was your week-end by the way?"
I start my computer, don't remember what I say ...
I grab some coffee, half a day is gone,
the PM pressures: "I want that asap done!"
I am cluttered in tasks and bullshit, too:
"Go fuck you right now - yes, I meant you!"
I don't say what I like to, I mentally punch a wall,
I crank some more code out and git-commit it all.
Some devRant on the lunch-break, some shallow talk,
I leave the building and take a short walk.
My mind rotates, I cannot enjoy the scenery now,
I return to my desk, and figure out what to handle and how.
But my plans are crashed by a colleague dashing in:
"I need you to do a test setup! I need to begin -"
I do the setup, I do some other stuff,
At the end of the day I feel totally rough,
Work is piling up even more -
"Tomorrow", I think and close the door.
At home, I just flop on on my bed -
I should be learning instead ... -
with some pizza and chill.
I think about sleeping, I hope that I will.
...
It is now Friday,
my brain is fried, too.
I am finished with this poem - how about you? :)7 -
Why the fuck do teachers take points off for coding style. Like really placing my open house brace on the same line as an if is what looks good TO ME. And breaking from a while loop with an inverted condition is nicer than a huge if TO ME. Fuck it I like the m_ for member variables too. And yes C++ usually names functions like someFunction, but I like how c# does SomeFunction. Like shit, it's personal I don't care that I lose 5points every test I do it just to say fuck you21

Hey, why isn't X working?

Customer: The pages x and y are not displayed in the menu of my website.
Me: I've added another menu level. This level wasn't planned. Your pages will now be displayed.
Customer: Do you think I have too much menu levels?
Me (what I want to say): YES. You have too much of EVERYTHING! Too much menu levels, too much useless pages, too much bad formatting, too much different font colors in one fucking sentence! Your website is crap at all.
Me (what I said): No, it's okay.
I hate customers.2 -
Person: So what do you do for a living..
Me: (here we go)... I am an information security analyst working in an incident response team for x company. I do log collection and manage a large scale correlation engine.
Person: Oh, so are you super smart or something? (Blinks her eyes and continues with blank stare)
Me: Uh... Smart enough I guess.
Person: Can you hack things like a hacker.
Me: That really isn't my job...
Person: What's your job again?
Me: Computer guy
(She lights up)
Person: Why didn't you just say that? I can understand that.
Yeah... I seem to have painful conversations like this often.10 -
Customer: (calls emergency hotline) We have a really bad bug!
Rep: What seams to be the issue?
Customer: I need to talk to Sam, he knows what to do, tell him it's urgent.
Rep: can I tell Sam what the issue is?
Customer: Well, Sam built a newsletter program but I don't have a way to import mass amounts of emails addresses.
Rep: That sounds like a feature, not a problem.
Customer: why wouldn't it do that? Would you build a car without a steering wheel?
Rep: I am not sure that's relevant to the problem.
Customer: what do you mean?
Rep: I would say it is more like, "would you build a car without a pair of jet skis attached to the back." And we would respond with, "we would be happy to add Jet Skis, but it's going to cost you additional money."
Customer: So, how are we going to fix this bug in YOUR software?
Rep: :/5 -
Let's portray Stallman as a malevolent criminal, dying on the creepiest hill, shall we? Apparently there's even people that make statements such as "if you defend RMS, you're just as terrible as he is".
Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Do you have any idea what the case even is?
Richard Stallman has a controversial opinion about a rape case committed by someone else. Gee, what a shocker, people have opinions. Does that make Stallman a criminal himself?
Oh but he's representing open source software. That's why he can't be there.
Oh yeah. Shunning him (and erroneously so) as another Reiser is gonna make open source look so good, isn't it.
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
- Evelyn Beatrice Hall, writer of Voltaire
People are entitled to any opinion they may have. Just because you disagree with it (and in this case I do too!) does not mean that it can be used to criminalize someone and to ruin their career. That is just wrong.25 -
After doing the work he requested as he wanted he was not happy. So i thought we sit and discuss what he didn't like. I was so wrong.

Boss: "...you know what I think you are: a fraud; Masquerading as a developer. The database design you have given is shit. The template I gave you I did in 1 hour. You took half the day."
He gave a simple template to use and he told me to come up with an ecommerce db design via downloading PrestaShop and seeing what is relevant to us.
Me: "what did I do wrong?"
Boss: "you think I don't know what PK means in database design? Why the fuck did you put this here."
Me: "can I expl..."
Boss: "I'm not finished, you been here half the month and what work have you to show for it..."
Me: "I have..."
Boss: "You shut up when I can speaking"
Me: "ok"
Boss: "You have no work to show for the time you have been here. I tell you what to do. I want someone who is proactive. My friend, you will do the work I tell you to do, you understand?"
Me: "yes but can I just say that I have been doing your work I have the contact the various developers as you..."
Boss: " You shut up when your boss is speaking. Can you do this work? (Slightly long pause)
Me: "I can do it. But, I have done the bits of the work you said I do. I was h..."
Boss "don't give me bullshit stories...you haven't done the work..."
Me: "But you have spoken"
Boss:" You know what Im giving you 1 weeks notice if you are not able to do the work. Can you do it?"
That moment!!! I was literally shaking I could have high fived his face with his laptop.
Me: "yes I can"
Boss: "Then get the fuck out of my sight and do it"8 -
I get bothered when I hear someone say "my program is refusing to do x". The program is doing exactly what you have told it to do.2
-
Have you worked on something impressive and wanted to tell a non-programmer about it?
You start to figure out a way to say it, but then you decide 'nah they will not get it'.
But you still want to talk about it with someone so bad... Its super unsatisfying to not be able to explain this tech shit to the people you like.
If you were a pilot, you could say shit like 'i landed a plane during a storm while eating a burrito' and everyone would be like omg thats amazing.
What do I have to say? I made an auto pilot system for a plane, so that a pilot can land it during storm while eating a fucking burrito.. what's their response?
ehm okay <crickets chirping>

You know what drives me crazy.. seen this inside code of "senior devs"

OHHH but if i say something I GET IN TROUBLE.4 -

Why the fuck do people go to so much trouble to justify what they did instead of just admitting they were wrong?
The way I handle this type of people is to first ask a straightforward like "X implies Y, right?" If they answer "yes" I say "then this here isn't right" and watch them go around the world to find a justification for it not being wrong.6 -
I’ve been programming for 20 years now. My friends and family never really understood what I did back in the days. And they still don’t.
All they saw was a kid who was good with computers. Your friendly neighborhood tech guy who would take a look at your computer for free.
I’m sure most of you have been in the same situation.
When people ask me what I do for a living. I’d just say “something with computers”. Because most of the time they will ask me to look at their computers and I’d reply with “oh that’s not what I do”.
When I was younger, I’d try to explain what I actually do for a living. To really tell people the problems we as a programmer solves on a daily basis or the things we create. That’s really hard to explain to “common” people.
So whenever someone asks me what I do for a living? It’s always something with computers ;)12 -
Had a configure issue on a site running through CloudFlare hosted at WPEngine. Support on chat guy says "can I take a look at your setup" so I screenshot him! He says they're are new ways to point to WPEngine whilst using SSL so I say OK and he points me to a support article which seems accurate. He then says now I want you to change two records so I say ok (not thinking) which I do (stupidly)
Result site no longer reachable.
What do I do now? He says very seriously "you need to wait 24-48 hours for the DNS to propogate"
"Your joking it's a huge site with 20k visitors per day with advertisers on it"
"I'm sorry there is nothing I can do until the DNS YOU changed has propagated"
"I changed?" "Yes you changed the CloudFlare settings"
"You told me to!"
"Is there anything else I can help you with?"7 -
"You should record video tutorials of how to do stuff", people say to me.
#1 - I suck on camera. I have a really annoying nasally voice that I just can't stand to hear in my own head, let alone on video.
#2 - I look like every stupid a--hole fat old ugly white guy people love to hate. Nobody wants to see that.
#3 - I suck at remembering what the f$$# I was going to say to begin the video, to show the thing I was going to show, and how to end it without sounding like a complete #@#%@# moron.
#4 - %@%$#@ QuickTime! And any other video screen recording software that NEVER $%#@#$% WORKS for me!! I'll be in the middle of a very complex process I'm demonstrating and BAM! The whole recording crashes. Six takes and six more crashes later and I'm @#%#@# done with trying to do this #@$@#%.
Screenshots and text it is and always will be.9 -
How to teach a 5 yr child to code?
The method is simple you don't need to teach him to code just help him to understand the method to execute a task. It took me years to understand that coding is a way to express what you want to say- the method and also is our expression. So, if you can help him/her to understand what to express, then I believe the method on how to express is totally unworthy. He/she can say printf("I know this") or print("I know this") or #I know this or he/she may create a new language.
Which you might call: The Baby's Code in future
If you like it do ++7 -
Him: "I don't need source control, it's just another program that does unknown things on my source files. What if one day it stops working?? How do I get my files??"

him: "what are those? I don't use them"
Also him: "command line is vintage"2 -

I just want to tell you about my problem

Never gonna rant around and rebase you
Never gonna merge your branch, never gonna say $#@*!!
Never gonna risk a cry and build you2 -

FFS stop squashing commits. If “updated comments” is what the commit was it should show it in git blame. If “fixed null check” is what the commit was it should show it in git blame.
There is no reason to have “ticket-234 service revision” beside 1000 lines of code. How does anyone justify this loss of git info for the sake of “clean history”? Nobody looks at your history and says, “That is bloody clean git history I should write home about it.” People do however look at the code and say, “I wish I knew WTF they were trying to do on that line.”16 -
At what point can you say you are a programmer of a language? Is there an exact amount of lines of code carved in stone somewhere? I call myself a Python Programmer because even know I am self tought, I have been working with the language for years and I am very good with it. "Professional" level by some accounts, though I wouldn't go as far to say that myself. I have been working with Java a couple of weeks and it has been going very well, but I wouldn't call myself a Java programmer, but should I? At what point does one pass that line?
Idk.. Just a little shower thought for ya. What do you think?29 -
What kinda music do devs usually listen to while working? My friends (devs) say I'm weird.
Idk, but I listen to slow melodious songs. Am I upsetting the order of things and breaking unspoken, universal laws by listening to Birdy or Ed Sheeran while coding!24 -
Amazing API's and SEX!
Alright people, now that I've got your attention, I'm getting to the point where I need to plan and roll out a solid API for a project. So after reading a lot of the horror stories written here, What are the finer points of what makes an amazing API experience to use and integrate with over a poor one?
And don't say documentation (If you do explain why) 😁11 -
I'm convinced no one really understands OAuth2, probably not even the creators.
Every blog, articles and tutorial, you have people saying don't do this, don't do that. Basically, no one agrees on a single implementation.
Want to use passwords for auth in a first party system you fully own? Apparently, that's unsafe.
Hmmm, what about magic links for passwordless auth? Also not safe you say?
Okay, I believe Okta just wants people to use their services, nothing else.15 -
Background:
New guy on our team, deadline coming up. I bring him into a meeting room, explain what the project is about, quick run down of the code. Then spent a while explaining what we have to do next, gave him a piece to do, took a piece to do myself.
The fuck up:
A few days / week pass by and I ask to check on his progress. Fucktard decided an hour after the meeting that it would be easier for him to use a different database than what the project was using and decided he wanted to work on some other feature instead.
My stuff was dependent on his stuff, so not only did he not do his work but stopped me from delivering mine.
Let’s just say there was a few stern words in a meeting room shortly after that.1 -
Guy sees me on my laptop and says "is that Linux?". I say yes then he says he is into computer "stuff and can hack anything". Not having a clue what that means I replied with a "awesome".
I don't have really any friends that are into "computers", so I decided to play ball.
I asked, "Are you into coding?.. he says, "Yes". Then I ask, " What languages?" He says, " Just what ever, anything really, it depends on what I am doing."
At this point I understand what is going on but it is so awkward. He continues.. "Recently I used.. what's it called abd or adb, you know I like rooted my phone"...
And let's talk about something else....
Why do people feel the need to lie or whatever you might call what happened. It might be different I think if he wasn't about 40.
I feel like this is a pretty common story2 -
I just discovered this editor. It's kinda cool :)
Have you ranters used it? What do you have to say about it?31 -
"I'm not very smart with computers"
Why do people say that? Obviously you may not know 100% of what you can do with a computer, but NO ONE does! I get that some people know slightly more than others, but it all comes down to how much time you put into learning it!
And how do you even respond to that? "I know, I'm dumb." You can't ignore it or affirm it, you just have to awkwardly acknowledge and then change the subject. Ugh...4 -
I have discovered a fresh hell
Some guy I’ve never met or heard of in the office lobbed a comment at one of my *approved and merged* pull requests. He doesn’t say anything specific, only that my REST urls are not in line with naming convention. That’s all he says, and I’ve already walked the URL consumers through the code and given them the URLS.
I’m really annoyed that this guy won’t just say what he has in mind, but fine whatever this is a professional environment and developers are not known for being a diplomatic people. Let it go and get your work done!
I do some googling and find an obvious change that needs to happen- I implement it, open a new pull request and inform my URL consumers of the change.
This rando still isn’t satisfied and still won’t say what needs to change. I am on round 3 of this wonderful cycle and this guy is acting all fuckin HAUGHTY about it. “Here is a list of conventions I found googling, you should read them even if it takes 4 hours because it will benefit your career”
Sure dog you’re probably right on that one but we are in a professional environment and at this point you are holding up production so you can wave your dick around! Just SAY WHAT YOU MEAN SO WE CAN MAKE THE CHANGES AND GET OUR WORK DONE4 -
I use a library and it gives me some strange error message. No problemo, just file an issue on GitHub asking the maintainer if I'm plain stupid or the lib actually has a flaw. As it was a question, I have not posted a dump and all the shit.
Maintainer responds with a snarky comment about his crystal ball being broken and I have to submit a log, a dump, debug information and a bunch of other stuff.
Well, what choice do I have, I collect all the requested information, create a wall of text comment, all nicely formatted.
And the issue ends here. Myths say, the maintainer got asked to join Elvis on Mars.
I mean, why do you ask all the shit from me in a unprofessional manner just to stop answering? Just say "I have no clue why it behaves like this" and I know whats playin. But that's just ... sad.5 -
The more I learn about programming the more terrified I become about having huge knowledge gaps and learning something wrong by possibly making wrong assumptions about how certain things work or by falling on bad tutorials. I'm constantly hyped about coding, and at the same time I always feel I will never be able to say confidently "I know how to code".
How the hell do you make sure you are learning programming correctly as a self taught? Or do i just have to accept that no matter how and what I code there will always be a better way to do it, resulting in me constantly feeling as a low-skilled coder?3 -
I know we have a lot of talented people here. Piece of advice, what ever you build, believe in it. See it through. No matter how good of an idea incompleteness won't get you anywhere.
After all every other day we all analyze different successful products and say "huh... that's nothing. Even we can do that".
Well thats the difference "We" can do that, they DID it.
See your ideas through. Stay motivated =)1 -
The kitchen at my office is pretty small, it fits a max of two people. Today morning while making a sandwich, an infrastructure dev walks in and proceeds to say... "I hope you don't mind me standing behind you, it's really not a Christian thing to do"... what?6

I took a Computer ethics class some time ago, and at some point, we talked about honesty in Computer Science.
There was one thing that bothered me that we never had the chance to touch on, but how do I know that the button I'm clicking is doing what I want it to do?
I mean seriously there is really nothing that is stopping someone from making fake buttons that pretend to do what they say they are doing. I might be uninstalling something on my computer, but can I "really" trust that the software was "completely" removed?
As a developer I always strive for honesty, but that doesn't mean other people are.
How do you guys deal with this?13 -
The story of how I stumbled onto devrant:
Not long ago I was struggling with visual studio and did not know what to think, do or say. The only thing I wanted to do was scream while I banged my laptop against the wall. Just before doing that I googled "fuck Vs fuck Microsoft" and I was introduced to devrant. Something about reading the rqnts of frustrated developers made me calm (It also made me laugh). So what I really want to say is: thank you devrant for saving my money.3 -
So I was in an interview for a web developer position in a startup and the interviewer said to me "Do you think you'll be able to help the guys with CAD design?" I have no idea what to say. Does this guy even know what a developer is??!?!? I mean not that I dont know how to use CAD, but I'm applying as a DEVELOPER, not a product designer8

My room mate works in a data analytics company with his girlfriend. I always wonder what they do in office as they spend on an average 12-14 hours.
Yesterday we were having dinner and his girlfriend said "now we are working in D3"
Having used D3 for a small project in college I was going to ask more about it.
Her next sentence was "It's a language. Like html"
I did not say a world. Just nodded.6 -
What profession would you say is most like software development? I'd love to be able to give people an idea of what I do, without making it sound like witchcraft...10

First thing, I love my colleague. I know him for 15 years and I'm under 30. But I freaking hate when he picks his nose FOR ALL THE DAY LONG and uses shared mouses and keyboards, leaving them unable to use. I have to clean all that mess and no matter what we say he still do it. :(5

Hello everyone,
I'm new here. [OK. Let's skip this]
I want to know where to begin on my journey on learning how to create a program that predicts what a user will say next by storing already said things and by making specific characteristics for the users.
I know that I will need to train it with some data first lol.
But how will it do the prediction. I just need this part of understanding.
I'm sorry for my bad English btw.7 -
What I say: I'm a computer science major.
What people hear: I can resolve any tech issue you have or will ever have on any machine that exists in this universe. I am jacked into the Matrix at all times. I am the IT god. Look upon me and despair.
What I mean: Sometimes I try to tell the computer to do something and I cry when it doesn't work.1 -
Anyway I just want to fucking write code. I don't want to deal with people or give an opinion that is not appreciated. My manager says I am too aggressive but the truth is I hate stupidity and incompetence. I tell them their ideas are shit and not in a polite way and they make HR call me. Now I don't say shit and they are asking what I think. I think all of you are cunts that's what I think.but I don't say that. I say no comment when I know they are about to fall into a massive ditch. Will I stop them? Fuck no. Will I help them out if the ditch? Maybe, if it only involves writing code. I can't do diplomacy. I'll definitely be a fucking tyrant if I ever ruled a nation.rant ugggh fuck this and let me write killer code. i can't seem to please anyone management sucks ass14

I loose it big time when developers in my team say "it's not working" and don't even care to explain what is not working and what were you trying to do....2
-
A couple of weeks ago I went to an interview where I was asked the following questions back to back: "What would you do if you were the prime minister?" && "What would you do if you were the attorney general of the United Nations".
Needless to say, I wasn't prepared for that...5 -
Recruiter reaches out to me, he says he saw my LinkedIn and thinks I'd be a great fit.
I say ok and send my resume.
He gets me a phone screen. I do it, I think I do a pretty good job. (I'm able to answer all the questions well, I think I'm onto the coding interview for sure.)
A couple days later I get a generic rejection email.
I'm not sure what happened. They had my resume, I know I did well on the technical questions (I do that kind of thing for my current job all the time.)
No idea why I'm rejected. If it was something about my experience, they could have seen that from my resume. If it was something from my phone screen, I have no idea what it could have been.
Just wanted to rant >:[8 -
I would say that I have good parents and my dad also supports what I do (most of the time) but could my mother please calm down and let me do what I enjoy doing while not yelling at me to learn Latin saying that it is 'the most important subject'.1

Oh dear people,
Congrats for going nuts @-red -style!
You have hit the cap! @Cup0coffee!
At first I thought I didn't know what to say, but here have a modified citation:

Do you know what I'm saying to you?
Friendship is rare." [2001 - by guess who]7 -
Do you guys often get upset because of people that ask your job because when somebody asks me what I do for a living and I say "I'm a programmer" this someone says one of these:
1- Oh really, can you tell me HoW tO HaCk NaSa? (It's more often than you think)
2- WOW AWESOME SO I HAVE THIS BiLlIon DolLarS ApP IdeA CaN yOu ProGraM iT?
3- Hm... and... what do you do for a living? (Apparently programming is not a job)
4- Cool! Me too! Bcs once I MaDe ThiS GaMe I prOGraMmed WiTh GaMeMaKer (true story, and it was a flappy bird, but in the place of the bird it was chuck norris with a moustache instead.)(with lasers.)(Also it wasn't really working.)
5- Cool bro, so, can you take a look at my printer?
6- Hm nice * looks away with disgusting face * (that was my own family lol ;-;)9 -
TL;DR;
I was asked to give estimation on an app, that:
1. No one has a clue what it does, even though there is v1 on the store with almost 10% of functionality working
2. No one has a clue what should be in the new rewritten version
3. We are already behind schedule and I have no clue why, I've just been told that
4. They need UI flow that shows how the app will work with static data and when API's are ready (because ya know, writing code is easier than creating wireframes and modifying them accordingly) I will then need to link app with API as if it is as simple as drinking a cup of water, especially that: 1. What is water? 2. Do I have a cup or is it given, and 3. Relax bro, drinking water is like eating a burger, piece of cake!
I'm not sure what to do, not enough that it's React Native but also spaghetti requirements that no one was able to answer my simple question: What is the app responsible of?
P.S.: Some say I must rewrite the old app ONLY, no new features, others say: Turn the new web portal into mobile app, I say: WTF is going one?6 -
Talking to a second year student about what they've learnt so far, and what they should learn next:
"Cool, so what general topics would you say you know really thoroughly at the moment?"
"Oh, I've now learnt Java, C#, C, C++, Rust, Javascript, node.js, HTML, CSS, Angular, Vue, Erlang and probably a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten. What do you think I should concentrate on next?"
"Hmm. Probably best to take just one of those and learn it really thoroughly."
"...but I already know them all really thoroughly."
"Ok. Can you explain what an abstract class is in say Java, C# or C++?"
"Sure, I can create a new class called abstract and then use it for abstraction. I do that loads."
...🤷♂️🤦♂️
First lesson: Stop BS'ing. Might work for flexing to non-devs, but that's about it.10 -
After being a miserly bastard and settling on VirtualBox for my VM needs on OSX, I downloaded a Parallels trial a couple weeks back, and today, I'm happy to announce I bought a license!
VirtualBox can go do one.
I've ditched Studio for Rider, and now Parallels, what has the world come to when a dev actually buys software?!
The end is nigh I say, nigh.rant limited company buying software osx that cash money software licenses virtualbox freelance director2 -
Me: *working on a project for a year solo*
Management: Let's move development to consultants
Me: I don't think we'll profit from that
Management: Yes let's do it anyways
Me: *switching between project management and working on another project for 6 weeks*
EMERGENCY MEETING
Management: We're not getting enough output
Me: What did I say?
I'm so fucking tired of this project fuckery. Cred to my boss, she's great, but this time they should've just listened to me.2 -
First of all I want to say that I like how much this group rant is inspired by people complaining about their parents last week. (there were a lot)
Whenever I wanted to proudly present my family something I programmed they just answered (and that really infuriated me) "Just don't do anything illegal, ok?".
These words held so little appreciaten for what I would invest so many hours into because I love it so much...1 -
Me: DMs coworkers that appear online after their working hours to check on them and make sure they’re not feeling like they’re obligated to work more/encouraging them to take time for themselves
Also me: Can’t sleep at 4am, so immediately start trying to chase down the genesis of an error someone complained about4 -
I'm going to start searching for a new job next month. I was let go from my current one because my co-workers were putting in 60~80 hours per week and I was only putting in 40 (plus one 13 hour weekend, which we were paid for. I refused to work the next Sunday and was let go two days later. We were salary exempt; no overtime).
When interviewing this fall, I do intend to list a 40 hour work week as something I'm looking for, but what do I say about my current employment status?
This has only happened once in the past; years ago. I simply said "My contract ended" at the time, and I got a job really quickly so it wasn't an issue.
When a potential employer asks, do I say I was let go because I couldn't keep up with the two months of 60~80 hour work weeks, or do I simply say, "My contract ended." (A little bet of a stretch since I was an FTE, but a work agreement is technically a contract and it technically did end).5 -
My friend is learning PHP and I told him to install xampp but that fucker went nuts and installed MySQL too which didn't allow the xampp's SQL and ended in conflict.
Oh man that's so funny when non programmers don't do what we say.2 -
We often rant about people who think that because we can program we can do everything with computers.
But I have to admit that when I get asked what I do I often only say that I program or do something with computers. I usually don't get more specific because it's so hard to explain to someone who doesn't know anything about the subject that I would have to explain the basics each time. And I'm just to lazy for that.
It's nice when people ask me how it is going at work but I probably won't say anything more than ok or fine because my day was fucked up by a memory alignment bug in the chainloader and I now don't have the patience to explain what these both things are and why they fuck up my day. -
With 4 years of b.tech about to finish, i feel fucked up. Our studies were useless and other than java basics, i know nothing.
Parents say do external courses, use your time to learn some more industry relevant skills , while college says to shut up and take a poor salary job , when offered by those placement companies.( I seriously haven't even heard of most of them).
What to do?3 -
NO MICROSOFT FOR FUCK SAKE NO!
I have a fucking 15inch screen and that left side menu is eating 25% of it! IF you gonna throw in a new "Creative" design, make the damn menu re sizable, NO I DO NOT WANT TO HIDE THE LABELS AND MEMORIZE YOUR STUPID ICONS!
At least do what Gitlab did, a nice small menu that DOES NOT EAT HALF THE DAMN SCREEN!
Oh, did I say anything about sub menu hell that pops up whenever your mouse hover over any of the items on the left? Yaaa... that goes to a brand new rant!19 -
Why do we post here? Is this just an outlet for our intrusive thoughts? A therapy session for things we can't articulate in meetings? Being able to say controversial things we are not allowed to say other places?
It feels like this place exists outside of time and reality. It really is refreshing, sometimes frustrating, and sometimes really offensive. Things that exist here that would not be tolerated elsewhere:
1. alternate ideas of software, sometimes politics, theories of existence, people liking javascript
2. ostream (I love you man)
3. bullying
4. saying what you really feel
5. telling people to fuck off
What would we do without this place?
Meanwhile my intrusive thoughts:17 -
I've been teaching the new interns. Some are progressing really nicely and understanding the caveats and concepts of the frameworks, but others are a big pain in the kernel
I sent them some code outlining what they would do, filled with `// TODO`'s. Every day I would ask them if they had any questions and they just said they were having some progress. At the end of the week, they say "the code that you sent me doesn't work. I ran it and it didn't do what you said it would do." Well that was your job! My bad for having high expectations I guess1 -
i hate linux like a lot , how do you guys use it
like you guys dont want an advertising ID, how the fuck will advertisers know who you are and what you like?
open source , give me a break, you mean your os devs are soo untrustworthy that you just have to see what they wrote in the code, who does that?
free come on, how poor are you linux people, i mean, quality stuff gets paid for, free stuff just means it's trash
and the linux devs , the aint like real coders they are just hobbysts, making your os in their free time
and who wants to install their own software anyway, on other platforms the company curates restricted software that you can use, and i know you'll say its oppressive but its just customer protection.
and i do want my platform to track everything i do, it only helps them build better stuff for me.
and whenever they decide to outdate my hardware and kill support for it, it only means they care and want me to get the latest tech, how considerate.
wait , i hear you say, there are no bugs in linux, my vendor makes sure my os comes with the latest antivirus software, nothing can break my system.
and just because linux runs on servers and most super computers only shows that common users like you and me are ignored, at least my vendor is not a sellout, and still makes stuff for the masses.
you say freedom i say safety i can sleep safe and sound for am protected nutured under one echosystem of software that i can not leave.20 -
Proud to say that I've graduated with a first class degree! Going to start my graduate job soon, would appreciate any advice as I have no idea how to tackle it or what to do.8

I've been using C, C++ and Python for 10+ years and suddenly I moved to a new job where I had to learn and use JavaScript.
I think that it is different, as many say, but it is full of lacks and it's like a pile of hacks to make things work. It's a scripting language used as a programming language. What do you think about it?14 -
I had the old "got this great product I've developed, but can't afford a website, could you do it in exchange for a percentage of profits?"
Look, it's your product, I have had no say in its development, or quality or how you market it etc. I do websites and the website will do exactly what you want it to do. I couldn't give a fuck wether you sell one or a million. It's not my risk. Pay me for a site and I'll do it.3 -
I sometimes feel like some people's comments on devrant are enough for a mental health crisis diagnosis. I wonder, how can we diagnose people through text? And can, let's say, ML do any better.
I mean; let's say for example abusive behaviors. This may be an online community but that doesn't stop some from abusing others, right? But the only form of communication here is text, right? What if you could diagnose... Not even that. What if you could inform a mental health expert about a toxic behavior online? We do have a lot of "internet policing" but we have no "internet mental health help" for toxic behaviors and attempts to mitigate that. I don't mean banning people. I mean literally in simplest form tag a psychotherapist in the convo.
Just thinking. :)13 -
Hello all, I was wondering how some of you guys manage stress on the job? I recently got a new "real" job as a lead php dev working 9-5 in down town Houston. I must say, this "normal" work schedule is kicking my ass. I'm constantly exhausted, stressed out and am now having second thoughts about the position. What should I do?9

Having to fill skills field in my internship CV suddenly makes me realize that i actually am not really good at anything.
Some friends say that i'm a can-do-it-all person when i actually just learn how to do what i need to do on the spot.3 -
I am working as a junior in a company that pays me minimum wage and doesn't give a single fuck about my existence.
"Change the job", you say?
Well, that's what I am trying to do for, like, 3rd month now. No one wants to invest into junior...
Every day I go to work with thoughts about quitting, but I need a job... Even if it's like this...

To my client who wants a two-column formatted email built with tables in Constant Contact to appear in the same two-column format on mobile devices: You're lying when you say your previous developer achieved a legible, mobile, tiny screen email this way. I know because I can see the previous email formatting. In fact, I cloned that exact email and merely swapped out the content. You really do not understand what you're asking for.4

It’s been almost 2 years since I left US. But damn, is America now so bitterly partisan? No matter what you say or do, half the country hates you.25
-
So I realized:
No matter what terms we replace master/space with, it still implies one is better that the other, or in charge of the other.
This isn't equal! I demand process rights! So I say we make a deeper change! We change the fundamental way concurrency works in python so that all forks are equal! In fact forks are divisive. We should do away with that too.
Make python single threaded again.1 -
What do you guys do to get away from conputers? I, for one started practicing card magic and i say it's really helped me. Card magic and programming are 2 polar opposites. For card magic, social inter action is necessary while programming gets pretty lonely. Anyways, i'm really curious about your other hobbyes33

Seeing how smartphones are advancing every year, I would say in about 10-20 years, we will see lots of people using smartphones as their personal computer
What do you think?13 -
Sometimes when I'm telling my boss how to do something on his computer or I am watching him explaining something to me and he seems like a fucking lost infant that never used a fucking computer in his life I just wanna say loud and firmly:
"What the fuck man? Can't you fucking just click this shit already? Your fucking mouse pointer is on it already, click this motherfucker for once!"6 -

What do you say to your coworkers who want to get free copies of your paid (kinda expensive and lots of effort + time to download) work related video tutorials?
Also, sometimes they ask for it indirectly then laugh.
If they insist, should I ask them to pay for the share?
Some people don't like investing in themselves. They pay expensive tuition costs but don't want to invest while they are working.
What's the proper way to say no in a big corporate environment without looking like a bad guy? I will say yes if the justification and initiative are really good.17 -
Do you think the keywords used by git (or other version control systems) are intuitive?
I'm talking to a very junior dev about git and I find myself having to explain around the fact that I don't feel the keywords are great. They are asking good questions like
* Why do you say "push the commit" but then say "make a pull request" - when I want to push why isn't it called a "push request"
* "Why are the metaphors sometimes related to trees (branches), sometimes roads (forks) but you still call it "master" instead of tree trunk or main road?
* Why do you call it "commit", what kind of commitment am I making?16 -

dev: but sr, we need to...
Client: what did i say? just stop saying things and build it!2 -
I hate those questions like "where do you see yourself on five years?" Or "tell me a time when you had to [insert leadership activity here]" where the obvious answers are something inane and managerial.
I also hate those questions that come up a lot when I say I know SQL where they ask me to do some inane, unnatural SQL thing in a statement rather than a procedure or a function.
Also see these: https://devrant.io/rants/136331/...

So what say guys, switch to linux forever, and bye bye windows?.
Or is there anything i should know before i do this?.
Things i cannot do in linux?

(Using Arch, seems all fine)19 -
You know what I hate more than bugs/shitty docs/no VCS?
Recoding the whole damn thing in another language, from ground up to do exactly the same shit. Why WHY must developers shit hundreds of solutions into space only to say "Huh, look at my software, it was I who developed it." No, you simply recoded it and wasted your time and everyone else's time searching for a solution.1 -
I’m new on here I’m just here to rant and idk what to do with this app and I might delete it but I CANT STAND IT. Needless to say I was up all night and it still turned out as an amazing feature that we use to this day.2 -

On the most serious of notes, and i need yall to think hard about this.
What makes you a good developer whether Backend or Frontend or Web or mobile.
What qualities actually make you a good developer?
I mean, we all use google, github, stack overflow etc. So what makes Programmer A better than Programmer B.
and in a more practical sense, ive been coding for two years now and i have deployed an API written in node and an instagram automation tool in PHP (which is down now due to lack of funds), i lack frontend knowldge (but i want to make up for that) and i have projects that when i finish, with my connections can and will blow up in terms of income. now you on the other hand, what makes you better than me?
and lastly, how much code do you have to change from an existing project, lets say from github for you to comfortably say, yes this is mine.question node php developers github api frontend mobile backend what makes you better stack overflow web8 -
I had to do a double take... Needless to say I can't sign in for shit, fucknows what mental finger dance I did on the shift key when signing up to these guys...
Also: forgotten password is "please type your email, if there's an account associated to this email address we'll fucking email it with password reset instructions"...
Fucking arsehole fucks, I just wanna pay my fucking energy bill. -
Got back at work after 2 weeks off
Useless to say I did not remember what to do or where to start…
Today I was working on a feature and while thinking about code organization I found an empty function ready to be filled with the exact name I was about to type.
My 2 weeks ago self prepared it for me… it was so kind of him -
So this person is looking for a way to learn how to create websites, but apparently doesn't know what backend or frontend is.
Not sure if he is using the wrong process, or someone teaching him messed things up pretty bad. Or probably my question wasn't properly phrased?
Not sure what to say next. How to help him without investing hours? Should I share a good link for him to read? How do I do that without scaring him away?8 -
Last update on my student job.
Today is my last day. Even thought it was tough sometimes it was a really good experience.
I worked with amazing people and had a little taste of IT limitation. Didn't had full admin access so I was limited on a lot of things I had to do but that taught me to say no to my supervisors when some things were not possible.
I'm very proud of the final result so do my superiors and colleagues. I'm really impressed by what I was capable of doing and that gives more self confidence. I know I made the right choice and I know I'll continue enjoy computer science as much as I do today.2 -
At what point do you leave?
I totally get Amazon's principle of 'disagree and commit' but how many disagreements with your COO, CEO, does it take to make you say:
Fuck this, I'm out of here6 -
Again found myself before deadline. My excuse? I'm more productive during the deadline rush :D
How everyone else sees it: you fucked up
What do I say to myself: never again!!!
```
sleep(until_next_deadline);
goto begining_of_this_post;
FUCK YOU TECH LEAD! Our manager explained what he wanted 4 MONTHS AGO! You said we could do it! We can do it! You suddenly changed your mind, instead of asking me WHO IS WORKING ON THE PARTS REQUIRED TO DO THE MAGIC! MAYBE I WOULD KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE OR NOT??? MAYBE??? NOW I HAVE TO GO FIGHT YOU, YOUR EGO WILL SAY YOU ARE RIGHT, YOU WONT BACK DOWN, AND WE WILL SCREAM AT EACH OTHER! FUCK, RUINING MY 4 DAY WEEKEND RELAXATION! AND IN FRONT OF THE BOSS!!! FUCK
-
Sometimes I do wonder why can’t I just be content at getting best I can get at what I’m already good at - and what brings in the €€€? Why do I go ”oooh look shiny intetesting language, let’s try do shit with it” or ”hey, let’s try this thing called kernel dev/pld/program verification which are all so far outside my core expertise they might as well be in a different universe!”
Dude I mean writing a kernel in V and doing proof oriented programming in F* are fun and all, but what good’s that gonna do me when I’m in all likelihood still maintaining legacy web apps in PHP ten to twenty years from now?
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m torn inside with my current workplace offering me everything I value and stuff that’s rare to find - but at the same time I’d love to be challenged more and don’t really have enough of those opportunities in my current environment. Or some shit like that.
Well fuck that, back to writing my own embedded DSL into F* in F#….1 -
Or is it my life that has impacted coding? I'm so glad I was born in the right time. I can't even imagine what I would do instead of coding if I had to live in say, the middle ages.3
-
So we have this team bonding and feedback session every monday, where everyone in the team needs to say what they appreciate of their team member and what they wish the team member would change... The whole thing takes about 2 hours.
Honestly, feel like a corporate BS, what feedback do you want? Just do your job and I am happy with it... Well I guess that's part of the corporate world, instead of just doing your job, it is about how big your "influence" is in the company and how many people like you4 -
So instead of drinking shit like Pepsi Max while coding on a weekend, and since it's so hot lately, I thought I'd buy a blender and some fruits and make frozen fruit drinks.
After unpacking the blender, I notice a booklet with a few recipes.
All I can say, is, ":/".
I'm thinking about making a frozen watermelon and peach drink right now. What do you guys like to drink when it's really hot (besides coffee)?12 -
What container data structures do all of you actually use?
For me, I'd say: dynamically sized array, hashtable, and hash set. (And string if you count that.)
In the past 8 months, I've used another container type maybe once?
Meanwhile, I remember in school, we had all these classes on all these fancy data structures, I havent seen most of them since.19 -
Not dev related but what is the fucking point of someone saying I'm going there to do that and when i ask them to show me THAT what they did they say "oh it was so bad I'm not gonna show you haha"
Like how do i explain it without being rude.....
........
Here's a savage example scenario
---
Your wife: "i just came back from a mountain in the middle of nowhere filming an ad and in gonna be in that ad"
You: "cool. Id love to see that ad, could you show it to me?"
Your wife: "noo i was so ugly and it was so bad im not gonna show u"
---
What are you gonna think? What was your wife filming secretly behind your back and she doesnt want to show you? Was she even filming in the first place? Or was she fucking a guy? What is one supposed to think of this conversation? Why fucking tell me ur gonna go there and do that and then not talk about it at all after doing it? What the FUCK who DOES THAT ???3 -
Client: I need you to integrate with this API.
Me: ok cool, but what are we doing with it (where does the data go/styling)?
Client: what do think we should do?
Me: well it would be really cool if we did it like this *short and sweet explanation of really cool functionality and design*
Client: I LOVE IT! Let's do it, oh also I need it done by tomorrow...
Me: *GOD DAMNIT, why do you always do this...don't you dare say ok* ok, yeah I can totally do that.
...now at the market stocking up on redbull2 -
👀
What do you say?
I already finished this recyclable view of a rant, I needed sample data so I just grabbed a rant from the recommended. :P -
I hate it when a family member ask me to fix something and I fold and try and fix it. I start to troubleshoot and they see what I'm doing and say "oh I thought you knew how to fix it, NVM I can do it." Like wtf this is how u fix stuff2
-
Startup: We are looking for interns. Do this project that we know will take you a week. But your chances mostly depend on this project.
Me looking for my first internship: Takes complete 2 days to submit the project which had so many open-ended questions. They review and say I aced the project and would like to interview.
Interviewer 1: From the beginning starts asking me if I myself have done this or that, gets thrown some questions that I answer immediately and then suddenly get accused that I must have copied from a tutorial on an open-ended question. I used what I learned from my previous projects, what do you want from me. You never specified all the cases. Then he said is done.
Interviewer 2: Hello, we are a new startup. We will make you work 40 hours a week. Then he lied. Are you allowed to lie?? He said we are unpaid (I read it wasn't) to ask what motivates me. The other interviewer on being asked did say that it wasn't unpaid. By this point, I was done.
Got rejected today. Wasted almost 3 days on their stupid project. I am so salty!!!19 -
Fuck you BBC, I just want toblosten to fucking radio and you tell me that I "need" to sign in.
I do not want you to tell me what to losten to. I do not want "relevant" content, just want to listen to 30 mins of news.
Then you say it is easy to signup, but then ask for my exact date of birth as the first question wtf ...5 -
If you have any project (personal or not, doesn't matter) that does not have proper code comments and documentation and you don't want to make one because of the effort (maybe even "wasted" effort), think again. When commenting on a wall of code to say what it does, you may find a better way of doing what you have to do, possibly increasing performance, or improving security.
I have been able to do better input sanitization for a method on a personal project of mine because of this.
Don't use the amount of effort for proper documentation as an excuse not to make one.2 -
I don't know what shall be the hill I die on, the subject my children and I will never agree, the thing that will make future generations condemn mine as irredeemable bigots.
I am sure I have no idea what currently ridiculous notion will be the one I shall be thought as a dinosaur for refusing to accept.
I guess it will have something to do with AI.
Nevertheless, I say for sure:
CARS SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE!9 -
I have a question for you guys. What level of education tends to be required to get a good dev job?
I've seen some people say bachelor's degree, I've seen some people say it doesn't matter much. I really don't fucking know. I'm in my senior year of high school and I need to know what exactly I'm gonna fucking do with my life.10 -
Recently I've been working on an ERP in logistics, and I was doing it solo. Gotta say that it's a big mistake to take this up alone, and architected the whole system based on the flexibility of scale. It took me more than 7 months to bang enough walls to realize that tech work is not what it used to be.
As of now there are a slew of meetings that I need to go to. It pretty much felt like the client was trying to find faults in my work.
Software timeline estimation becomes irrelevant, and work still needs to continue on anyways. At this point, I really do feel like giving up and just be a product manager instead. What say you?1 -
Why do germans have to use STRG?
ITS CONFUSING!
Im Swiss german and people often say to me use STRG!
Only that im speaking german isn't a real Argument! Why are we even using different keyboard-layouts?
Why arent we all using CTRL?
Its pretty mich the Standard for all keyboards!
And what confused me the most when er got Windows 7 machines at primary school!
I didn't know what fucking button to press until the IT Guy of our school came and explained US all that STRG was CTRL!
And the most worst of all, when german youtubers say Press CTRL in a Video but show STRG! -
TLDR: dealing with other people is stressful
I hate having to explain things to people and then they still don't listen.
Especially if they know nothing about the topic.... I guess like those little kids that ask Why? all the time.
Can't you see I have other things to deal with, just do what I say because unlike you I already tried ... Or just know what I'm talking about....1 -
So what do you all believe the best first language is and why? I personally say Python or JavaScript because they are simple, and easy to understand8
-
Every time I read someone reply to a post with "lol" I stop for a moment and imagine myself actually laughing out loud to that post. I've got to say, only under ~1% of such posts were actually worth lol'ing. Other times laughing out loud to whatever is there would be retarded at best.
So either I'm a bum with only notions of a sense of humour OR there are far too many retards laughing out loud to basically anything.
Or perhaps there are too many idiots who use 'lol' without knowing what it means.
Or those people so desperately want others' attention that they lie to others pretending to like what they say/do/write by saying "what you did there made me feel so good that I burst in loud laughter".
This is stupid.
If you don't laugh OUT LOUD - then don't say that you do.
If you are not in immediate danger threatening to your life - then don't say you are LITERALLY DYING.
FFS, is it THAT hard?26 -
What are your guys thoughts on Stackoverflow? I feel like no matter what I say on there, whether it be a question, comment, answer, it’s never good enough for someone. Everyone there just seems so rude for no reason. Do you guys have the same experiences? Just curious if it’s only me or it is like this for everyone.14
-
We interviewed some candidates for a dev position some weeks ago and, knowing the environment isn't that challenging (at least for me) I voted against the better curriculums because I know they would be frustrated fast, I said that. But I didn't say it was because it's shit here... Of course.... I really just want the good devs to be better then they can be here.... What do you think?3
-
When an interviewer asks, what are the steps that you take usually when given a task to do something, what do you guys say?
I said, I devote 10-20% of the time to understand the given problem - sit and explore all possible scenarios to handle, then develop a brute Force approach, improve the approach to make it more efficient, see if it handles all edge and corner cases, then write test cases for it.
( I'm thinking, the process doesn't vary a lot for most of the people?, Except in TDD - one'll write the test cases first)
How would you answer this question?
I have this feeling that I messed up something 🤔8 -
Need some advice again. I'm a junior backend developer or that's at least what I try to call myself.
For the first year at this company I did a lot of backend which I love and really enjoy, eventually they let me do devops and migrations. Okay, but not really what I wanted.
Two months ago, I started my internship at the same company. Now they wanted me to do Shopify, I hate to do frontend, only thing I enjoy is the JavaScript. Fucking sucks but okay, eventually it will be done.
And fucking today I heard they wanted me on support mostly, isolated from the rest into another room with the (dumb) zero experience trainee.
I honestly don't know what to say? Should I refuse? I do have some power because they accepted 3 other projects which require my expertise with migrations. Like why don't they use me were I'm good at, backend?2 -
When I say I'm a developer, it means that, in simpleton language, that I don't do your backups, I don't "repair" you PC because you're a baffon and I certainly do not edit company's logo which is in .png format deliver it in .cdr file and expect it as, as good and perfect as original, So fuck you, you impatient , imbecile , pompous prick I've ever met
> "Yeah take as much time as you want, but do it quickly"
I mean what the fuck does that even mean, if you want it done quickly then say so, be a man and face it and don't hide behind the excuse of "take as much time as you want"
Fucking idiots, little do they know when I'm in the zone I need time to think before act so I don't get blamed for "un-satisfied" product in the future.
So I've decided to leave loopholes in the current project I've been working on, deliver it, and leave the company and make their lives living hell, I know this is beneath anyone's standards but I have to do this to teach them how to treat a person properly,FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK,
This is going to be fun9 -
Greetings, fellow JS devs
What change do you want on the next breaking version of JS?
I would say use square bracket instead of curly bracket for object.
What do you think?30 -
Wanted to write a personal rant but fuck it, that shit that I wrote is too cheesy. Let me just say: I hate myself for not being able to work as a fucking human being. I hate every fucking human out there. I want to be fucking left alone and do what I want without feeling like a disgrace. I want to be me and be happy. Fuck you.
With love, some whiny boy4 -
It's 12:30 am, this dude wants to implement the Google Assistant "book me a haircut" feature, in his assistant bot, to book pizzas at a cafe near college (real small place).
All for a small semester project
He's asking me how. He says he knows Java concepts for this, but doesn't know where to start.
At what point do I say I need to sleep3 -
Client: "I've started as a software developer too" *chuckling* "so I understand EXACTLY what you say... But could you just explain me what do you mean with 'legacy code' ?"
Me: :|2 -
Seems to me some companies only want people who have read computer science books back to front.
What is the fucking point of asking me a question, to then say it's wrong, and then just repeat what I said but in a way that sounds like it is directly from a book?
Who the fuck cares what the difference between c++ and python are, I don't want to work with python anyway, and the job has nothing to do with python?
#madness5 -
How do polyglot programmers successfully use languages?
I write code with second languages like how I speak a foreign language (e.g German). I think of what I want to say in English, then translate it to German.
How do my fellow devRanters do it?5 -
Fuck webpack.
..besides that what really grinds my gears is the cloning of objects in js. I do like js, but why can't I just say object.clone ? Or Objects.clone(object)?
I mean deep down an object is just 1s and 0s and I just don't know why, there is no standard or nice way to do this. Would this be technically be possible?
Maybe someone knows more about this whole thing, would be happy to hear.2 -
Maybe I am just a fucking idiot, but I don’t get error handling at all. I’m always torn between what level the error should go, where it should go, and what to even do about it. Why has this burden of choice plagued me?!?
It’s like this question I can never figure out. How to react to certain things appropriately, because who can say that and be 100% correct about their opinion.3 -
I just don't know what to say to a new employer anymore. I'm almost 40 years old and have not worked a day VOLUNTARILY in my life. I strictly do it because I must. To prolong a life I never asked for. Yesterday someone at worked joked I must be
weary of life. Yeah. I openly admitted that I am.1 -
What bothers me most with the Matrix hack is that so many people say oh look the secure messenger got hacked. From what I can tell it had nothing to do with their software nor their protocol. If you're running your own Homeserver you're totally unaffected.1
What gadget do you like the most, preferably besides your computer and cellphone?
Mine is Google Home mini. Because I typically forget where I put my cellphone. I just say "Hey Google, find my phone" and it will ring it.28 -
This cat is looking at me like how my manager looks at me when I say am gonna work a few extra hours of work because I like what I do...
Am the one who gave her the milk 😅1 -
I want a robot that can do just one thing, just so I can say fuck you to these forms.
Well that, and maybe one other thing but let’s not talk about that😉
You know, like be able to see what cars and signs look like in pictures. Geez, what the hell were you thinking about.4 -
Having Technical Product Managers who say "it doesn't work, I dont know what, but do your job and find out."
-
Sitting and making mobile phones do what i want. When i tell them what i really do they just say:"I don't any word you say, but i think it's good!" 🤔
-
I have a strong web dev background so um doing a bit of logical programming now...
Reading those tutorial I got sooo excited because of how they always say
"Programming is when you give a computer instructions what to do and how to do it"
But the truth is Its when a computer tells you how to tell it what to do and how to tell it how to do it....
SO WHO IS CONTROLLING WHO??1 -
"hey, can you please help me out with this, it isn't working"
"What's it say?"
"I dunno, It's giving (not throwing) some exception/error" (no clear distinction between them)
Well, shit. Did NOT expect Java to do that in case of some undesirable flow in code! Stack trace, error message, what was happening when the exception (or actual error) occurred as inferred from logs... Nope.
Great! -
I'm living a daily drama with my own head lately. I was hired like two and a half months ago as a junior programmer and it is my first real job, in addition to 2 internships (the last one was in the advertising agency, and after a month I started to search a new job and warned my boss that I wanted to quit, because it was kind of a painful job and I was not happy at all because I was not working with programming).
The thing is that I do not know what they expected from me in this current job, and I still can not say. Am I being enough? Am I a disappointment? Everyone there is so experienced and good at what they do, and I was just used to being "the guy" where I studied that it was some sort of shock when I realized that I had to get way better even for a junior job. I do not feel productive as I wanted and sometimes I feel like I'm a total disaster and I'm not made to work with the only thing I could say "I'm made for this".
I might be overreacting this, but I just wanted to say this somewhere and I'm thankful I have devRant now. I could talk to my superiors or my boss about this, but I'm so used to get there and focus on my tasks that I'm always forgetting.3 -
I may have been drinking too much coffee. I really like (need?) it.
Do you know the feeling after say eating the same meal a free evenings in a row makes you dislike that for a while?
I think that's happening to me now for coffee :(
What the FACK am I gonna do now? Drink tea? 😦4 -
Well my greatest mentor has been bad experiences. Its always there, lurking in the corner to mentor me. And well i do take a lesson or two, now and then to keep me afloat.
As they say- what doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger.
Human mentors have been missing from my life. Superheroes don't exist :-/ -
How do I get into Technical blogging? I think I have a lot to say and it will probably vent my frustrations, especially on the need reduce technical debt...
and also figure out what m my ideal team would be...
But whenever I start writing (which is rare) I can never finish... Gets sidelined by other things...4 -
Oh man, stands out first in my memory. Was going ok until my original boss got transferred in to another department... The first replacement was one of our HR managers 🤔
The person she then made as similar to a team lead had issues with me when I had just a bit of a different perspective about a problem to solve - I soon found myself in technical support. Go figure...
I'll never forget what one of the directors said to me a little while after they shifted me:
"Not everyone can do what they want to do if they are not good at it..." I look back on that heart breaking moment and say with pride: FUCK, YOU.3 -
You know these people who want your support but do everything they could possibly do to prevent you from helping them?!
This one is about text-based support.
Basically, I told them to use a software. One guy said: "There is always an error right in the beginning when I start the app."
I ask: "What does it say?"
Another dude joins: "Yes, I get the same. Update fails or something..."
I ask: "What's the exact error message?"
Second guy: "Retrieving update failed or something similar..."
*whaaa, guess what: this is by no fucking way what I meant with "exact error message"*
Well, I ask nicely to look it up again and tell me the details.
Then, I suggest a possible solution for this abstract problem. Answer:
"No, it only happens at start."
What the fuck do you think I am? A stupid monkey who cannot read?! I know that it happens at start, that's why I suggested what I suggested! And don't think you're so intelligent to believe that deleting an update.exe in %appdata% had nothing to do with your problem. You don't have a single fucking clue how software works in its simplest manner.
What the fuck. -
Not programming related
AT ALL
I see you guys as my wise friends so i thought u can give a good advice.
Let's say that u are a really good friend with someone . That friend is a she!
You are a "he". Clear enough.
What if after a while you notice that she is quite awesome and you start liking her.
-- By "liking" i mean loving.
Is this wrong?
I guess you don't want to ruin the friendship with her? Right?
What would you do?
PS: she is really awesome, and cool and uhhhh .. u get it
Sorry for the unrelated topic :/15 -
What a coincidence. This will be that day. Not as dev, but as a student. I know this place called DEVrant, but I'm really nervous right now, because of the tests today. I didn't learn and I'm gonna fail all.
But not the tests the only thing I worry about. I hate this world becouse everybody needs to work hard and there is no break. Rarely you can get some air, but one second later you're in the deep again... I don't know what to say or what to do. This will go in my entire life? This is horrible.
I know. I'm just a student. "It will be harder." you say. But I've had enough of this.3 -
Some logic I'm developing packs three different states into an f32: NaN means do nothing, +0.0 or positive number means polite request and -0.0 or negative number means force override
Yeah, I don't know what to say...4 -
Tech people should have a codeword. So that I don't have to explain to every data provider showing off their own crappy limited analytics tool that "I do know what SQL means and I just need the ODBC user/pass, thanks".
I wish I could just say "hey, &0x00A0 = 1337;" out loud and he would be like "oh, thanks! I needed the break. Here is the ODBC crap, I'm gonna grab some coffee."5 -
Professor: with rm -r /* you can delete everything on your pc
Me: ou boii lets try it can't be so bad🤪
Prof: pls never try this, when i say everything i mean everything
Me: ou frick what did i do 😱
Note for me: Next time do a backup4 -
lets say I have managed to hack over 100 PCs (not powerful , all in the same building)
what kind of things should I do to them ?
*mining bitcoin is out - those computers are really bad*6 -
I start my first "real" job on Monday. I will be one of roughly three new junior full stack developers on a team of 15 senior devs. The company has a casual dress code and they allow headphones. What should I expect? I want to grow and I don't want to be a nuisance, I also want to earn a reputation and become respected when I do have something to say.6
-
OK, I know the general consensus of StackOverflow on DevRant...but jesus h christ...do devs not debug their own shit anymore? I can't say how many times I see "I get this exception...how do I fix...hurrr durrr....". When it all comes down to it, if they just attached a debugger and looked that variables/properties, they'd see what kind of stupid shit they are doing.
How do I handle working with my coworker?
He can be a bit half cocked with his pursuit of ideas. We're supposed to be working as a team on a project, and he'll often forget to cc me on emails. Or he'll go and talk to other people (make decisions) without discussing it with me.
Am I ovary acting? (heh) No, but seriously, I think it's benign behavior, butI feel uncomfortable by it. The last time I brought this up to him... He nearly cried. He was very hurt. What should I do? Be more aggressive?
I was a student leader throughoyt undergrad, but I feel like if we say something is a team project that we should be trying to work together. Feels like he doesn't know what that even means.4 -
What would you guys say is a good strategy to learn coding. I'm a U.S Marine, waiting to pick up on my MOS school at 29 palms. I will be dealing with coding and I want to get ahead before I pick up my MOS school. What do you guys recommend I learn and a good source to learn fast.11
I wanted to create a messenger bot.
Time to create the bot: 15 minutes. I test it, everything works, I send request, receive response, and so on.
Time to embed it inside a messenger app: 3 fucking hours.
SERIOUSLY GUY, AND I ALSO FAILED, I DON'T UNDERSTAND A SHIT SO FUCKING MUCH BUREAUCRACY I SWEAR GETTING A VISA FOR CANADA IS 1000 TIMES EASIER.
What is a send/receive? What have I to pay for? Why I need to be a USA citizen? Why I need approval? Approval for what? Why you say I configured the app correctly if you never call the Hooker? The hell I've to do? Aaaaaaaaaa3 -
I am thinking about learning Ruby. Some awesome things like Oh-my-Zsh and Homebrew are built using Ruby. Read many posts about it. Some say Ruby is overrated and cannot be scaled.
What do you devs think?7 -
How do people deal with this.
Customer: my trial is finished, and I dont have a bank card?
What do I do say post me the money every month send it by pigeon mail?4 -
Today after a second interview I was asked to complete a code challenge. They didn't say when they would want it completed by, only just as soon as I was able I guess. Anyways, they said ideally they'd like it to only take me 4-5 hours to complete. What should I use to track time? I was thinking just giving them some WakaTime data or maybe screen record the challenge while I do it. What would you do?8
testing feature: that is not what the specs say this how this is suppose to work. so, I write a bug report.
conversation with developer goes as follows
developer: this is not a bug. sends the bug report back.
me: the specs say it is a bug. I resubmit the bug.
developer: sends it back saying that it has been changed in the new specs.
me: how do I get the new specs?
developer: it is on the server, go ask your boss on where ecaxtally on the server they are. then, he closes the bug report.1 -
Well one of my clients called me yesterday and say his Windows is not working properly. I asked what did hi do and the answer was:
- Windows say that there is no more space left on drive C: so I moved the Users folder to D:. I thought it should work fine.
Seriously!? Why are you touching system folders!? You should move Win32 folder to D:. Or format drive C:. What's wrong with you man?1 -
As a dev living overseas I video chat with my family every Wednesday after dinner--a ritual to keep the family bond strong.
A ritual I dread.
While my cousin who works in hospitality always brings up interesting stories from her work, I have little to say about mine.
Sometimes my mom complains me being secretive of what I do. Everytime she says it I cry a little inside.1 -
I have a question, let's say I have a website and app both using oAuth facebook login. Should I save the access token provided by facebook in my database and if I should, what will happen to the access token when user logins with facebook on website and then login again with the app? is that mean access token is going to be overwritten by new login? and do you have any other suggestions for 0auth integration?3
In the first one, the group would just not get to agree at something, they'd spend hours talking about an approach.
First times, I was like "Hey, why don't we do this?", they began to argue and half an hour later, they agreed to whatever I said in the first place (they didn't acknowledge what I said and they tell me they came with the solution and that I didn't say anything)
Fucking shit, if only they listened in the first time. -
=Your Human Body!!= what do u think you run on in real life??
What do you think you run on??
Brain: C++
Skin and bones: HTML + CSS
Data: Typescript or Javascript Or Node.js
Walking and breathing: Python
Defense: Java cause every white blood cell is a new class
sleeping is basically C++ packing in all the files unless someone gets drunk they cant pack correctly thats why their brain is probably messed up >=) i would say the beer is corrupted code folders16 -
Alright I have a question for android/ios app dev, as being a web dev I see one has to do so much for tech stack as there are tons of web languages. And to keep themselves upto date according to the latest tech stack they have to learn new every day.
What about app devs you don't have so many languages like web do so can I say a person spending more time in one lang can learn it way better than web devs who have to look for the latest tech stack and start from the scratch?7 -
What do you tell non-tech-savvy ppl that you do? So far I've narrowed it down to: "I'm a programmer of sorts...". "I make websites" just doesn't cut it anymore. With others I'm safe to say I'm a full stack developer.16
-
I'm about to graduate and I have no idea what I'm doing. I tried learning the basics and even went through a lot of extra stuff. I can only say I dabbled in scripting, web scraping and a little bit of software development. However when I compare myself to my peers, I feel so out of place. I can't confidently say I know even the concepts I practiced. I am really interested in the field but I feel like I'm way behind and this is constantly nagging me. Is this normal or is there anything I can do about it?3
-
When learning something new, say a new language or framework, do you go through the docs or tutorials, or do you just learn by doing and figure it out as you go?
I like to learn by doing and getting a finished project and start modding and changing stuff. what do you guys do?17 -
It's a bit late but what do these specs mean?
The f and the 16/20.
I thought I was getting 20mp but all the camera apps say maz is 16.
And for RAWS, dinner say 13, OpenCamera says 16.9 -
At what point can you say you are experienced in x language?
I am consistently looking up function definitions and ... how to... for languages I worked with for years.
I'm not talking like 'how do I loop through data from a database' but something like 'which param goes where for this function'
Curious
Friend is wondering if he is a copy/paste dev... :/6 -
How do you plan before small software changes?
I have some extremely iterative approach where I change one function or one variable at a time, like a headless chicken. I am not planning beforehand which modules or functions I need to change but start from somewhere and like a linked list, I am moving on until the end.
But I feel like it is wasting my time. What is your approach when you want to have let's say -50 line of code changes?5 -
friend: what os do you use?
me: arch linux
friend: what de do you use?
me: i3-gaps
friend: what editor do you use?
me: vim
friend: what file manager do you use?
* thinking i will say ranger *
me: vim-fs
...
friend: what browser do you use?
me: chromium+vimium
and that's when he lost his mind.10 -
Hey remote workers.
What would be your advice for someone with experience that's interested in exploring remote work.
I'd like to target this question to remote workers that live outside USA/EU/UK. Say South America, South Asia.
A little introduction.
I'm a full stack engineer, did one project in embedded systems with QT/C++/RPI can do backend in Python, Node, Java, C#. I have some experience with React Native (just 2 apps)
I currently I do full stack with Node, React, postgres and caching with couchdb.
I gather requirements, write the projects, proposals and then I do the implementation. (Really full stack, I kinda like it though, when I'm bored with code I pick up an issue and contact the client to socialize/get answers. I found out that nondevs like to feel they talk to a human not a robot)
I'm making about 600usd/month (dev in a poor country) working 30hrs /week. I'd like to ramp up my income, working remote part time to fill up about 50hr week.
What can I expect?
Where do I start?
Are there part time opportunities for working remote?
What kind of roles are in demand?9 -
Not really a rant but..
I'm really into programming. My problem is that i dont know what to do. I know the basics of a few languages like C++, Java, Python, HTML(+CSS), js but i want to start doing some more advanced stuff. I just don't know where to start.
What im trying to say is that im not a complete noob. It's just really fucking annoying when you want to start working on something but you dont know what or you come up with an idea that you abandon later because you can't turn it into a complete project.
Any help would be appreciated.12 -
Interview question i had:
- how does jwt work under the hood, where is it stored, what 3 parts is it made of, who creates jwt, how does the server know what information the jwt token has (how can it say oh you're Joe you can login now)
- what is the difference between observable and promise in typescript, how does observable work, what is a stream, what is the difference between fetching data through an observable and fetching data with promise and when should we use one over the other, what does .next() funcrion do in observable under the hood
Answer me these questions without googling8 -
@dfox why do some of the older rants display the date on the rant but then the comments are older than the rant itself (for example, the rant say 22/09 - or 09/22 to you - and the comments say 16-09. But most of the comments I see say 16-09). What did you guys mess up 😛2
Way of wasting time:
generating csv and importing in Open Office Calc, mysteriously what should be ",-," shows as "-0".
I thought some strange fucking time function was responsible of generating a "0" after my "-", until I discovered that for some fucking reason, Open Office Calc decides to add the fucking "0" by itself.
And they say that computer do what they are told to. I just said to import a fucking "-", it's called "Minus". do you fucking understand Calc?
Back to something useful.1 -
So I had an interesting problem... Let's say I have X lights which will turn on or off after I pull a lever. I know the probability of each one of them turning on, but they are all different. I want to know what is the probability of at least half of them being on after I pull the lever.
I wrote this shit show to do it: https://jsbin.com/jizocohebo/edit/...
Can you do better?4 -
Wrong place to say this, but I'm asked to work on a React-Native mobile apps, is there a need to mix native code with React, or do I only focus on the part of ReactNative components in the docs?
I do know ReactJs so far what I'm reading is familiar but don't know about mobile apps.
I must give an answer tomorrow morning, and SO will only bring me down if I ask there :)8 -
Got Aa job interview offer from a far location via my site contact page. I don't even know what to do or say. Social Anxiety sucks. I saw their sophisticated site. How do I not feel dwarfed? I don't know how to respond. Please help.1
What are the signs that you should quit your programming job? I always work 12+ everyday. I came to the point that I'm starting to get sick. Now my boss is mad because I did not go to work for a reason that I'm not feeling well. Plus, we are having deathmarch project management. I could say I'm already burned out. Don't know what to do.6
My team has been using CVS for ages. I'm new to the team and can't imagine how my colleagues are working in this environment. I am thinking of proposing to change to git.
I found this amazing video of Linus explaining to Google engineers why git is better and I thought I'll show it to them:
https://youtu.be/4XpnKHJAok8
What do you guys say about my idea? Do you have anything that can help me?17 -
I just thought of something. People get butt-hurt when people tell the truth, which is ironically kinda what happened to me. But I’m not mad, I understand lol. Anyways, people always want you to tell the truth, but when you do, they don’t and can’t always accept it. If there were a day where people always told the truth, who knows what would happen, but it wouldn’t be good. But at the same time, people are always holding back their opinions for what? No one’s forcing you, and you don’t really have to. If you see this and there’s something you want to say, to anyone or about anything, even yourself, just go ahead and say it.14
I'm currently pursuing engineering in an Indian engineering college. Needless to say the college Curriculum isn't going to take me places.
I like programming and I feel I'm pretty good at it. So I need tips as to what I need to do apart from college to pursue programming.
I have recently started learning Android development and web development in the college.
So any tips from devs would be great!3 -
Hey DevRant Fam <3
Hope everyone is doing very well as always!, i want to say sorry for my recent lack of activity in our community, i absolutely do miss communicating with everyone here as always dearly! there has just been too much going on within my life recently and i personally just needed a good break from everything , though to be honest more work was done than what i call my 'break', but guys not too much to say, about a week ago i turned 23 and things are finally starting to get a little better for me :-).
i'm also nearing the end of my degree in IT which this sem I've actually been working on a project for my first ever client with two other team mates, though i honestly feel that two of us are mainly carrying the team and the workload of course, but even so i must say i love learning all the time and its a real honor to do something i love and of course do with all of my heart :D.
as always everyone once again from the bottom of my heart i hope everyone is doing very well, and wish the best for you guys !
At what point do you say a junior dev is no longer a junior? What metrics do you use? Like scope of knowledge, impact on team / code decisions, years experience, management skills, etc.?
I feel I'm qualified as a mid level developer now despite only being a junior for a little over a year. I had tons of internships in college and was kind of placed in a role where growing fast was required.
I broke a sweat for most of that ~1 year I worked as a junior and my contributions to my project aren't insignificant
I don't say that to toot my own horn here, I really do want to ground myself in reality. But I don't know if my standards are too low or my organizations standards are too high. FWIW, other devs on my team have commented privately / informally that the junior title isn't super fitting.
I'm still pretty dependent on my boss but that's more for final say of things. He'll often have some input to my work but I'll also be involved with design discussion and take up a large chunk of work without question. On light sprints I'm knocking out 20+ taskhours of work, going closer to 30/40 when things pick up. Not uncommon to kill 10 user stories in a sprint.
I don't know, what do you guys think?8 -
!rant
random question.
Let's say you are making solo project. What is your approach?
Maybe you start writing some classes or generally some code, independantly, than plug things together
Or maybe you write recursively, so like "okay, im writing this method, and now I need other method to complete this one, so I write the other one"
Or maybe you try to make frontend first and do many atomic things, one by one "filling out" frontend? Or maybe frontend is last thing you do?
Just curious, probably as many devs, that many approaches, but Im just curious what kind of creative anwsers will pop out here ;)8 -
So uh does anyone have any advice on freelancing/contracting? I’ve been considering doing it a little while going through college since it would be a little better than a full on job (or at least for my current situation) I’m realizing, but I have concerns like the myths I hear about clients, or with my own performance, or just the pay in general.
Idk what do you guys have to say4 -
Le Angular programmer
Me: I need to add all these fields across this 30 page (seriously) questionnaire to the dataLayer for Google Analytics...I'll see if I can loop over all the controls and get the native element so that I can do things with it.
Also me: WTF do you mean I don't have access to the native element? Damn it! What does Google say?
**terrible french accent**
A few moments later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: I don't want to have to create a directive to put on every single one of these fields. That's dumb. Not gonna do it...bad vanilla JavaScript?
**terrible french accent**
Several minutes later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: Wait...if we use this directive then the directive can handle all the things AND we can use it outside of this questionnaire. The rest of the app can send this data so that Google Analytics can know all the things
Man Google..You sure do know what I want before I know what I want...Are you spying on me too?1 -
soo, i am unknowledgeable of ALL best practice.
lets say i call a php file called loader.php with a $_GET['type'] parameter, then after i check if type is actually set i switch the parameter and my logic then does stuff appropriate for $type..
do i create a lot of sub files with the program logic in it or do i just create subfunction (which i have to pass variables if necessary)?
Switch( $_GET['type'] ) { case 'foo': include "logic/foo.php"; break; default: echo "error"; break; }
or is the whole concept totally alien and stupid? i most honestly say that i dont know exactly what i could google to find an answer3 -
What if we have a AI that will build code what ever we say?
Is it be a new concept or new programming , it would so easy to build any software.
Maybe in a future some one will do this I hope.3 -
They asked me what car i drive 3 times. I felt so fucking embarrassed as fuck. How do i say i drive a 2011 fiat punto a piece of fucking trash junkyard 3000$ car while looking them in the eyes and not die of embarrassment. Being so fucking poor is sick and disgusting to me. I hate my parents for being lazy instead of becoming billionaires so i can be born into infinite wealth36
I knew I made it as a dev when I started talking with authority.
I engrossed myself into my field with enough genuine interest that I learned through practical means.
This isn't to say I'm simply head-strong, but I don't second-guess myself unless evidence to the contrary is provided, analysed and proven.
I learbed that your salary only goes so far as a developer (peoole who are in "the one and only" positions notwithstanding), eventually if you want to push further, you teach, you manage and you focus not on trends, but what youre good at.
That's actually why I love answering "What do I do during interviews?" questions. -
I've hired a apprentice that's literally today Said he doesn't want to be a programmer i said then... what are you doing here?
He didn't say anything ...
Do I fire him he didn't quit? I mean weird fucking situation. He doesn't seem engaged anymore so ... He ain't doing shit I should add4 -
What do you drink while you're programming?
Don't say "coffee, energy drinks", post the model/type.
I'm from Spain, and usually I drink this: http://coffee.wikia.com/wiki/...28 -
Apparently the fact I like to study things outside what I do for a living is bad for recruiters.
"We selected a candidate which focuses only on the frontend."
Why is everyone so afraid about the fact people can do more than one thing? Is it the fact they'd realize they are mediocre af if they would have to admit specialization doesn't mean they should stop to be passionate about the rest of the world?
I didn't say stuff like: "I am a pro in every it field", I said: "While I am definitely stronger on the frontend, I have interest in both backend and frontend, because it allows me to better understand how systems work and it helps me understanding that sometimes what may seem easy to do for the other role may also come at a too big to handle performance cost."5 -
When you have to do something as a group in class and you don't do or say anything
I just stayed in the back, maybe a bad idea...
They just did a bunch of crap, titled it "fuck bitches get riches" and put my name under it, I drew over my name, but they've been calling me leader since then, after lunch they continued with teacher, sendai, and eventually father
What a bunch of idiots -
Was asked to do a peer review on a coworker who I barely worked with. When I say barely, it’s like maybe 1 hour out of 8760 hours in a year.
Can I just ask them what to write?2 -
DigitalOcean, really just because of the pricing. I will say though that kubernetes in Google cloud is much better than what DO offers, so if cost wasn't an issue I'd probably prefer it
Handed off my code to Devs working on main products. Long presentation explaining everything.
Have discussion afterwards about what it does, but not how it looks.
They say thank you, I say you're welcome, and since this is my first bigger project, if they have some pointers or glaring defects in the code I'd welcome the feedback.
They all start laughing. I do too but in my head I'm like "wtf, I ask for feed back and you laugh? That's."
It's been bothering me.2 -
I know what my e-mail address says... but I have to say, the integration of AI with the code completion in Xcode Version 16.2 beta 2 (16C5013f) is so good it is scary. It is like it is reading my mind. I'm getting nervous about getting an MRI "Sir do you have any metal in your skull?" Me: "Oh god, did they implant some shit for Xcode to read my damn mind... this is going to friggin hurt!"
But seriously, I'm not at all a Swift fan but I have to say that with this AI auto complete, it is like having a "yea, this is how you normally would do this, how about we do this here" helper in the Mac.
But since the Xcode windows are all these dumb ass file browsers instead of document windows, I'm going to maintain: Xcode (still) Sucks... but a little less with this shit-hot AI code completion!2 -
man if i could figure out how to do stuff and had the money to do stuff i'd be dangerous as fuck, but as of now i can only posit questions... it sucks.
Examples:
- What do modern browsers/crawlers do when hit with, say, an "HTTP 450 Blocked by Windows Parental Controls" or an "HTTP 374" status code?
- What happens if I do <xyz minor edge case thing> on <system?> (just use your imagination, this happens for every edge case i can think of for every system and the list wouldn't fit in a few megs' worth of half-byte ASCII, much less *here*)
- What if I made like a board to fuck with busses while systems were on? Press a button and for like five bus clock cycles pins like 6 and 7 are shorted? That sort of thing. As for system/bus types, *literally any* (old consoles with expansion ports, PCI/-e/-X/whatever, southbridge, etc.)
- What if I did <filetype> shenanigans by doing <something indescribably horrible> to this file? How do things react?3 -
I want to create a social experiment and I need advice
I'm almost four years work experience and I'm still not a senior engineer.
Feeling quite sad, idk what I'm lacking. I do interviews and they give offers but say I'm not senior yet so take this role instead and I obviously say no to that (salary is even lower than current)9 -
If anyone has ANYTHING to say about the language C plz do i want to know what the dev community thinks?5
How do you usually handle an argument? Do you prefer not to get involved completely or do you choose to go "back and forth" until you and the other person comes to an (understanding/standstill)??? For me personally, conflict is like stepping on a nail. You can't smoothen a sharp tip, otherwise you're gonna get scratched. All you can do is try to move around it. I say what I have to say and then I'm done!!! If my opponent tries to keep going, I cut them off. Either one: block their number/media account... Two: hang up the phone while they're talking! Or three: get up and walk away ....1
I keep getting emails from my programming teacher to "do more challenge programs!" Outside of the homework where I already have to do this shit
I think I'm gonna take this weekend to do the whole workbook they provided and see what they say then. Probably that I'm not learning properly.
I don't dislike this form of practical learning. I'm sure it's very representative of work programming, because the biggest challenge of these programs is mainly the bugs VB Net provides.. -
Honest question.
Developers that don't work for a company and that don't use freelancing platforms but are successful, you're making good money, how do you guys do it? What advice would you give me, I really just started out as a developer a few years ago and I can say I'm still struggling but have high hopes for the future. Any advice is okay.4 -
I feel like I didn't do this right and I'm a tad confused as to what they mean when they say that the function should look like this when you call it:
let line = openingLine(verb: "row", noun: "boat")
Is my solution correct?10 -
I really do not understand why people do not use the defaults, I see a PHP code and I see all the PSR's violated, SOLID violated, and as it is something of years, unfortunately we did not get more rapporteur in a timely manner. I didn't go to college, but I must say, what the hell do you guys do in college?
Then many (the good obviously) programmers do not understand why they take so much the fun of PHP, if they see the codes that I see lately...2 -
Was that a good idea to use unicode symbols in a terminal UI application?
I thought that it'd be okay since TUI library is using unicode for drawing borders. But I'm not sure.
What do you guys say?8 -
So let's say I kinda came up with a pattern/architecture for Unity scripting which I find really useful and elegant.
It uses some features which are quite new, and I can't find anything similar on Google. So I suspect I might actually have invented something new.
What should I do?6 -
What colleagues expect me to do, when they enter the room and cry out some buzzwords or features. I mean, they say "dashboarding" and I have to say "ok got it, give me 20 minutes"
I don't want to spend 30mins arguing with you... I already got enough work as it is and ur supposed to be helping me...
I don't have time to explain everything to you... Just what I need you to do....
There's a reason I got promoted and you didn't...4 -
My number one problem whenever I need to write original unique code is this question: "What's the next line supposed to say?"
I just really have a hard time knowing what the next thing is I'm supposed to write, even when I know pretty well what the thing is supposed to do.
Anyone else? -
What things do you keep in mind when learning a new language, when your main goal is to use it in building projects in a framework?
For eg i am beginning to learn flutter and i am finding a need to learn basic dart things like creating variables, loops, classes, functions, constructors, etc...
What are the most important "language concepts" if you may say it that?1 -
Are you an off-shore contractor working for a US company? How do you really feel about working US Hours?
I have several contractors on my team who say "I'm willing to work any shift" but I need you to be honest with me on devRant... how do you really feel? Do you have families? Do you prefer to work your normal hours? Why do all of my contractors martyr themselves to work whenever they think makes me happy?
I can work around your requests, I'd probably get better work if you're happier and well rested. I'm not sure what I'm missing, are these hours actually better for you and your family?2 -
Hey everyone - Hope all is well :-), just curious I've been using Ubuntu 18.04 on my Virtual Box and i must say i'm really enjoying using Ubuntu - however at times it can get really laggy and its annoying :-( , was wondering does the lag have something to do with Virtual Box? if so what other Virtual Machine would you recommend :-)
$cash me outside, how 'bout that?
What do people use (I'm specifically interested in UK, but all answers welcome!) for P2P payments?
I like square cash, just so that I can say that. Monzo next, and the I guess direct bank transfer but only with a handful of people I really know. You wouldn't want to give it to stranger, and its a cumbersome process.4 -
I don't understand how Facebook can restrict my account when I'm following *their official guide* to make a WhatsApp bot (which entails creating a business manager account and all that tralala) which basically makes it impossible to continue through the guide to get the WhatsApp bot to do what I want it to do (I only got as far as having it send a demo text and set up some of the account BS).
Needless to say, I went for the Discord bot approach and got it to do what I needed.3 -
Is it only me or is it bloody hard to get into freelancing or remote work ?
I am a CS graduate, I have worked for a company that owns an online business. I didn't last a year with them for various reasons but let's just say work in my country is not so great. So I have been trying to get a remote position for few months now without a shadow of a success. I've built a Portfolio with a couple of projects while trying Upwork and some remote working websites with no luck.
What are your thoughts on this, what do you recommend me to do ?2 -
How different should two different technologies be to consider putting both on your resume?
Like is it okay to put both CSS and Sass (https://sass-lang.com/dart-sass) or are they too similar to reasonably do so, what about javascript and 'Google App Script'
How do you determine if it's worth being on your resume orif you should only have the more known one on the resume unless the job requirements advertise the other?
And at what point do you 'know' enough to put it on your resume if i should? At what point can I say I 'know' sass or google script enough to advertise myself with it?1 -
So, I had a friendly debate with my senior dev today working over this feature.
What do you say is the best approach?
1. Optimize at the time of building the feature.
2. Do the feature work, optimize all at once. (let's say on a time cycle).5 -
debian:jessie has lot many old libraries that cause memory leaks, which gets solved in future releases of these libraries. Yet, debian fails to accommodate these new releases. They do this to make jessie 'stable' they say. I am quite curious if these instabilities faced is what they call stability. Example: glib
As an art guy trying to learn how to code , I’m blown away on how antiquated the entire process is. Not knowing anything about code I can expertly say that there should be a better way to program. It hasn’t changed much since I used BASIC. Is this the best you can do? Typing line after line of rubbish lingo that only code bros know. Why not invent a smart version of scratch? What a waste.
Completely noob question and before you say it, yes I have googled but I'm tired and I just get walls of text.
How do I merge a pull request?
A nice guy has submitted a pull request to my repository on GitHub, how can I merge it??
I tried what I thought was merging but it said that a file is conflicting. I tried deleting the file and it still didn't merge.4 -
Yes, I'm that sucker who writes by hand the copy paste code fields even if he already knows how to do that. I'm not proud of it but, what can I say? I'm a wet guy...
Soooo what would be wrong for a developer to aim for a partner in a similar profession or the same?
I had my fair share of exp now and must say that i really love what i do and am really into learning and developing and applying all that I learn. I missed that drive in the dates that I had. I feel passion, purpose and understanding with what we as devs deal all day would be really helpful for a prolonged relationship. I dont wanna go for a power coupling but it would be nice to have ur partner on board no??2
