In 2014,. I sold 0.17 btc for $87. I bought pizza with that money. It was delicious. I regret nothing.14

6 months ago I sold everything, quit my job, gave up my apartment and left the country with my 11kg backpack. I booked a one way ticket to South America. I wanted to travel, get lost but also finish up some personal projects and do a little tech books challenge I came up with. I learnt so much over the past half a year, it's crazy.
Not looking back. Projects paid off and it turns out that my dream company actually found me themselves without me even applying... and so still from South America I'm in final rounds of the interview! 🤗
All my worries about a gap in CV, no employment along with other problems I thought I was gonna have... It's all BS. So if anyone here is waiting for a sign. Well, this is it now. Go!22 -
Dear diary,
Today I sold my soul... I hacked my way around a bug instead of refactoring. It was a moment of weakness... I... I was not given enough time....
I am sorry...7 -
My parents recently got divorced and sold their house, so I had to go through all my old stuff and found this beauty! A pair of new bateries and it still work! Fuck Yeah!14
-
Sales guy (s) : how many hours do you think this project will take?
Developer (d) : well I guess about 250 hours
(one week later)
S: I finally sold that project
D: nice! When do we start?
S: you'll start next week and it needs to be done one month later
D: 40 hours a week, times 4 weeks for one month is roughly 160 hours
S: yes
D: but I said I needed 250 hours
S: yeah but they didn't accept that so I sold it for less
...
(and no the scope didn't adjust to the new time frame)14 -
This is how I feel most of my client proposal start:
* It's simple, I'd like to re-invent <the wheel>.
* All I want to do is use <rocketship engine> on <old typewriter>.
* I'm too cheap to hire a full-time < DBA, DevOps engineer, development team>. Can I pay you pennies?
* I'm poor and broke, can you do this for free?
* I'd like to <commit illegal act> and be <legal compliant standard>.
* I heard it was possible to <fly 30 people to the moon> using <Ford Model-T>. Please do this for us.
* I <sold my house>, but now <I'm locked out by the new owners>. Please help.11 -
While I was looking for a wallpaper to use on my laptop, I bumped on this one and nostalgia kicked in!
It only took an instant to save it and set it!!! 😂
Whoever did this, s/he gets my respect!24 -
My room fan broke today....
And it has been hot for a while now in The Netherlands, so every store I went to sold out.
So I made one myself :)
On a side note, my pc temperature has never been lower :')18 -
Will meet our legend @wiardvanrij (the one who sold his devrant.com domain to dfox/trogus) later today if traveling goes well.
Excited much!15 -
I just got a text from T-Mobile telling me about their updated privacy policy and that I can “opt out.” So, naturally I do exactly this.
After a little bit, I land on their “Do not sell my data” page and discover that, not only does it have 175+ trackers,
it doesn’t even fucking work. Also, on the desktop version of the site, the very control allowing the user to opt out of having their data shared/sold doesn’t even render.
These are all absolutely inexcusable.20 -
haveibeenpwned: MASSIVE SECURITY BREACH AT COMPANY X, MILLIONS OF RECORDS EXPOSED AND SOLD, YOUR DATA IS AT RISK, please change your password!

Got a graphing calculator in high school for math class. Needed to memorize a bunch of formulas, saw you could program them in the calculator with BASIC. Sold the program to other students, profit.6

I'm starting to get the hang of this app.
I'm quite timid, I've only given a few +1s around.
I suppose this is my "Hello, world!" post!10 -
Her: I like a man who lives dangerously
Me: I sold a game to my client without debugging it
Her: grab a mop6 -
Not sure if it was the missing spaces in the title, the text lingo and bad grammar in the description, or the clickbait-style graphic but I AM SOLD.5

Using web2py, I wrote an SMS center for an African country and my company sold it for 1 Million dollars. I guess it was a success as it took me 10 days to develop it's initial release.3

Boss and project manager calls me into a launch meeting for a new project. A stock management system for a small furniture company that will work over 11 stores, 4 warehouses and multiple suppliers which will also work as an ordering system. We went over the spec(112 pages) and I told him that it will be an on going project over a year with an initial dev time of 4-6 months. He just said that he's sold it to them to be delivered for testing in 2 weeks and completed in 4 weeks(they signed the contract) and that I'd best get started. I just closed my laptop and walked out.7

Apple at its finest. Sold the iPhone I used to own. Wanted to remove from iCloud. Open chrome on my Android device and was greeted with unsupported browser. Funny thing is it works if I tick open as desktop website.
Ffs apple. Your safari browser is the new IE of browsers. Yes my device is supported. Yes for Christ sake it can render stuff. It's not an old Nokia... Who even thought it was remotely a good idea to restrict mobile access...5 -
Going... going.... going.... gone!!
Stackoverflow is sold, now to sit back and await the profiteering that's bound to happen.
I quote:
Prosus has built a significant presence on the enterprise side with a focus on the future of workplace learning. Prosus will reach 90% of the Fortune 100 across its corporate learning companies including Stack Overflow, Skillsoft, Udemy and Codecademy.

"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3 -
Online ads....
I think the problem is that in the age of "AI" and "machine learning" etc etc - the reality is that targeted or personalised advertising is absolutely shite.
All I see when I browse around are ads for things that I bought. It's like - I FUCKING BOUGHT THIS WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO SELL IT TO ME??!
I think anyone worried about the machine uprising enslaving humanity can relax and not worry about it, at least until amazon can understand when it has sold you something or you just looked at something.6 -
Motherfucking Microsoft piece of shit. Next time I hear someone talk anything other than trash about Windows 10 I'm gonna bash his head in. Over one week of rendering gone because the Microsoft motherfuckers decided that they can restart whenever they want. Installing wanna cry is less destructive than this virus sold as an operating system. People liking this Win10 shit must be really REALLY fucking stupid. Fuck you37

An interesting read about why the second (and last) WhatsApp co-founder left Facebook while leaving behind a whopping 850 million because ethics/morals.
"I sold my users' privacy to a larger benefit," Acton told Forbes. "I made a choice and a compromise. And I live with that every day."
Here's the article (do click through to the Forbes one): https://fossbytes.com/whatsapp-co-f...9 -
You are seeing this ad because Facebook sold your data in order to become billion dollar company.
Haha.28 -
today, after 3 years of waiting, I sold my 2 bit coins in 1000% profit ! best investment of my life so far4

Got my first internship for this coming summer. Sold icecream last summer.
Feeling really fucking good actually!3 -
My boss codes shitty ugly fucking abominations.
These fucking piles of hacky crap are worth less than a penny puked out by a dog, eaten by another one and then shit out, grabbed by a vagrant, stuffed in his arse and then sold as raw metal by the cremation worker after the former's death.
Fuck this. I'm not gonna rewrite this. Fuck you.4 -
Sold the company and started working fulltime at a company in a different sector a year or so ago.
Today one of the ops people comes up and says that someone is on the phone asking for me.
One of my old clients apparently had a question about their site. Turns out that they tracked me down on LinkedIn, and called my new company's public line just to see if I would be available to help them out.
Fortunately the new powers that be took that one in their strides..3 -
Now what, IntelliJ...? 🤨
(moral of the story: Don't install new things when you want to go to bed!)2 -
Case 1 - You sold the coins. And price continue to increase
Case. - Even when the coin reached it peak, you just hold the coins, because you learned something from Case 1. Eventually coin collapse.
And this continues in loop6 -
1. Pre-sales to Client: We can develop 200 APIs with 10 developers in 9 months.
2. Client: Ok! Cool, its a deal.
-- Sprint starts --
3. Actual: We are 6 developers, commited (or sold out) to make 200 APIs in 9 months.
Fucking pre-sales.3 -
First internship during college, developed an app for a month, company sold it for $30k, customer extremely excited about it. Best feeling ever 🤗 - wk657

I swear next time I see a UHD TV sold as 4K I'm gonna pop a cap in the lying fucker who mislabeled it!
4K has 552,960 more pixels dammit! This is the "720 HD" bullshit all over again!2 -
Interesting fact: Dogecoin is popular because of a Reddit bot that stole everyone's money.
DogeTipBot, a Reddit bot that was designed as a 3rd party resource for tipping Reddit users for good content was a bot that used Dogecoin as a micro-tipping service, giving many users their first crypto experience and popularizing the coin.
The creator of DogeTipBot went bankrupt, sold all of his coins, AND all of the coins of his users, and shut down the bot.
A currency born as a joke, made intentionally as backwards as possible, and popularized by a scam, is now worth $50 billion USD... now that's a meme.18 -
I REALLY HATE TECHNICAL PHONE INTERVIEWS!!!
I was asked: "What are the differences between C++ and Java?"
I got a mind blank at that point... Good thing it didn't last long and I came back with a reply.
But seriously, if you can't speak English clearly, why? Why? WHY?!
(I lost a whole question because I couldn't understand the interviewer. ☹)
At least it went "well" and now I have to improve the "technical" document and do 2 tests by Monday!11 -
A question for the people who say Macs are superior...
WHAT THE FUCK
I'm wrestling this iOS signing issue for the fourth day. How the fuck do people manage to build anything using tools broken by design and sold to them for the price of their mother.23 -
My room fan broke last week, and they were sold out everywhere.
So i build one myself (last rant), but after a while it just blew hot air.
So after some work I have this :) Now it even has RGB :')

Finally became a ++ supporter! I had resolved to do it when one of my houses sold. Unfortunately the way it worked out I lost a ton of money. Lost a ton of other things too but that is another story. At least my monthly bills are lower now!
I love this community. Even with the more mainstream stuff coming it remains on of the best ones I interact with.1 -
1. Visit the official site.
2. Browse for official tools.
3. Check the official documentation.
4. Check the Internet for other non-audiovisual sources.
5. Try making a simple application.
6. Run out of application ideas.
7. Move on to the next shiny dev technology.
8. Go to step #1. -
I have been developing something for 3 weeks now which has been sold to a customer for a lot of money last year, next to no specification on what it should do, got the spec 3 weeks ago, is being installed in a couple of weeks and I have no idea how to get it working!
I have tried about 5 different concepts now and they all start to look good until 1 of the many factors change then kaboom.1 -
I wonder if I’d get in trouble for brand misuse if I designed and sold a t-shirt that says “Be nice to me or I’ll talk about you on devRant.”6

A couple of months, 0$
It was a school project where I had to make a website for a company. I asked for a small amount of money for the website(100 euro). They accepted my offer but when it was time to sell the website, the company was sold to someone else. Unfortunately, they didn't want to pay for the website. They didn't even bother looking at the website(They are probably using Wix right now though).
Sorry if my English is crap :)2 -
Even if you unplug the router when Verizon tech support says they are going to run a test on it, they will say everything looks good and is running perfectly anyways.
Also, a tip. They will also try to sell you their newest router. Say you have that one already in every room and the speed is even lower than it was before, and then demand a refund because they sold you defective product. 9 times out of 10 they will unthrottle you instantly.1 -
Tesla lost $879M in 2020. Tesla is not profitable.
In USA, gas cars automakers are legally required to give money to EV makers, like Tesla, that has 100% EV fleet. Tesla reported making $727M in 2020. But, other automakers gave it $1.6B. Tesla lost money. They lost $879M.
Tesla manages to lose money even without competition and with all that dotations. Imagine what happens when the competition in EV arises from other automakers? Then, dotations will stop. Tesla had no competition and had dotations. They're not gonna get any dotations anymore, and they will have rising competition.
They're gonna die.
In 2020, in Europe, VW sold more ELECTRIC cars than Tesla. And then you ask why I don't buy Tesla stocks. That's why.47 -
Boss: [tells me to do a thing]

Boss: [mad because I didn't do the thing his way]
Me: [physically numb from putting up with this shit for 3y now]
I've been checked out at work for awhile now, but today was some next level BS. I had to throw together an application demo in 3hr, couldn't take lunch today because I needed to sign for a package, sold an 3y old laptop on Ebay (and got chewed out because he thinks it's worth more than that).
The only reason I still show up to this shit-show of an office, is I don't want to leave my only other coworker with our boss.. That, and my interview isn't until monday....2 -
We used to write infinite loops with "start cmd.exe" instructions in windows batch, converted it to a executable, gave it an epic vector icon and tried to sell it to 5th graders on CD as "an epic virus that will make your teachers go insane".
And some of it actually got sold.8 -
"So I have this awesome app idea..."
Proceeds to tell me, "I'll be, like, the face of the company, and you can just focus on the tech stuff, in the background."
Chad called me ugly nerd, so I took his idea, got an investment from his own father, built the company, and sold it.
See Chad got a new job as a sales development rep
At the company I built and sold
Haha epic2 -

School's windows installations had the UAC set to lowest.
Anyone could install malware or fiddle with important settings.
Oh by the way, the same school who's gData found it funny to go through my USB drive and delete all executables and all my code because it was "possibly malicious".
Started installing random crap and messing with people in retaliation.
Was fun.
Until I got caught.
Good thing I compiled a list of security flaws earlier on.
From that day on, everytime I messed up, I sold them two security vulnerabilites to let me off the hook.
These included access to all kinds of drives in the windows network, accessing other PCs desktop, literally uninstalling random printers from the network etc..
Fun time.3 -

It’s the big things.
Microsoft Kin. Both models. Brand new, not a single scratch. Full package.
M$ spent around a billion dollars to make these. They were discontinued after TWO MONTHS. Fewer than 10,000 units were sold. That makes one of them worth $100,000 in development.7 -
FUCKING FINALLY TIME!!!
I did it! I made IntelliJ IDEA find my Android SDK installation!
Thanks SO!!!
Now I can experience the joy of Gradle build times!!!
Why did Google had to make so difficult to work with Android without its Studio?!?!?!12 -
It has sated my hunger for never-ending knowledge.
It allows me to freely express myself.
It has given me the goal to surpass all these people who are better than me.

The sales team sold a project using our 'innovative framework', which had 'prebuilt components', which we 'only needed to plug n play' with a 10 week deadline. Of course, the framework didn't exist. Guess who was the lucky guy who had to create the framework AND finish the project in 10 weeks? fml...7

Apple... Isn't it obvious?
They once built machines and software that were tested and ready for customers but they went into a direction where saving money and generating more income has the highest priority.
The more recent the version (hard- and software) the more unstable it became. On top of that the crap they produce gets more expensive each iteration. I do own a 2015 MB Pro, that's it. I used to own:
- iPhone X
- MB Pro 2017
- Apple Watch
- Apple TV
- iPad Pro
... All at the same time ... But I sold everything and switched (back) to Android and Linux and no tablet at all. The MB Pro I own is just my travel notebook because of battery life.
I'm very disappointed of Apple's strategical direction and that's why I'm boycotting it as good as I can.13 -
My introduction to programming and computers is quite different than most as in I didn't start programming first, I started by taking electronic parts from my toys and repurposing them or using them in different things, we had a computer I used to play games with but at age 7 my father died and my mother needed money so she sold it, the next laptop I got was at age 11 and then I started coding.

I really fucking hate somebody asking me to implement a scammy function on a shop/marketplace like "if theres 54% items left, put up a red label that says almost sold out", it works, it drives sales, and they will just find someone else to do it, if its not me, but its such a fucking dirty and ugly way of making people buy your own sold shit more than actual legitimate sellers (that already pay like 25% off of sold items) in the same category, since the shop/marketplace allows for other sellers to sell their stuff on there too, but those tricks don't apply to them, only after they cash into the "booster" program that costs almost 150$ a month, disgusting.10

As a web dev i really hate half assed solutions
Especially when I'm forced to spend time making them because some stupid sales person sold certain features that our current product doesn't support.
At the end of the day that sales guy gets a commission and I build something that will inevitably break somewhere in the future.1 -
Whilst on vacation in the UK, I came across a store that sold Kinects for 2.50 £ each, as no one would buy them. I couldn't resist and bought three of them, I have one more at home.
... Any idea what to do with them? 😅
My current idea is building a 3D scanner for humans 🤔4 -
My grandfather gave me a laptop of a friend of his, to install an OS.
His friend had a new hard drive installed and apparently they sold him an SSD. He told me that the company that installed it, told him that it was better because it was more expensive.
Of course, an old fellow needs SSD for simple things like YouTube and such.

Just me getting angry about the reaction after the Cambridge-scandal?
The news are spamming it every hour, and suddenly everyone is "well aware about my privacy" and deleting their Facebooks.
I mean, as if we didn't know this all along. O-fucking-course your data is stored and sold for adds, you accepted it when you wanted to "see which celebrity you are alike"!
I walk around and talk about privacy with people kinda a lot, and nobody seems to care. And then this happens, and people are going nuts. Waow, what a surprise!

First day on the job, last session of debriefing, HR comes to explain us some company policies.
Among them, they want us to fill in our working hours using a smartphone app (Android & iOS only).
I raise my hand and I ask them what can I do, since I have a Windows Phone.
HR lady's face is striken with sheer terror. Since then, I'm known as the "Windows Phone Guy"... 😁

P.S. We also got some cool Windows tablet to use during our training period...5 -

My biggest dev regret was that I've followed other people's dream.

There used to be stories about how people sold their 650 bitcoins for $12 each and regretted it when it hit $22k.
Now they're gonna be regretting selling their bitcoin at $22k when it is worth $1M each.
My question is why is btc even popular again now?!21 -
I don't know which is worse:
1. My project manager telling me that I will have to make a whole project on my own within a month (frontend, backend, etc etc) for our major client and if I make it, we will get a bigger project for a longer period or
2. The colleague next to me being loud (speaking to himself, chewing things) at random intervals.2 -
Sales sold to a new enterprise client ecommerce solution tailored for small/local businesses as enterprise solution.

After inserting around 10k, the whole system dies and nothing works because all requests time out.7 -
Five or six years ago I was mining bitcoin. I was among first miners. I had a lot of bitcoin. I sold most of btc for 1$ or under to buy laptop so I can code. Bitcoin price was 1200$ at one point. I paid my laptop 300.000$. I am now senior dev. Fck money.5

Last week I finished what I thought to be unpaid work experience working in IT (more like programming), at the end of it I had a meeting with the boss who offered me paid work next summer and also gifted me a £150 amazon voucher for the work I did.
I sold my XBOX (ew the unproductivity) and use the voucher to buy a Mac Mini. Going from Windows, Mac OS X is significantly better, I prefer bash to power-sh*t.
TLDR; I worked for 5 weeks and got a Mac3 -
I reset my mobile (Wileyfox Pro Windows 10) today and I had to open my old Lumia 535 to get a code for an app. The moment I turned it on the sensation of meeting a friend from old came back to me. I didn't realise I would be missing my old device.
It's kind of sad that Microsoft decided to pull the plug once again on their mobile platform. I liked the minimalism they brought to the interface and the integration they were trying to add between different devices.
All is gone now and I am left to wonder with the possibilities that would have brought.2 -
Start to read the book from Jaron Lanier "Who owns the Future". And suddenly realize that the company which offering us "free services" is trying to build a superior model of machine learning and read all of our behaviour.
Thus, i start to logout my facebook, twitter, instagram and all of my social media. But, i'm not the lucky one who could fight this "selling data practices", because I still use devices with "Android OS". My privacy stolen & sold is inevitable. What a Digital Life!23 -
Not 100% of dev nature:

I'm on the fence about if the existence/mass production of shit like this is a good sign of a slightly more inclusive economy... or an early indicator of the apocalypse.
The circled part highly amused me.
It does give me s sense of peace and order due to it being sold by menards. They buy up bulk failures to launch and use their large audience to quickly dispose of them... so whoever had this stroke of 'genius', likely lost significant capital.73 -
Back at my masters degree there were 3 group projects and 2 of them were dev related. Being the last to enroll and classes had already started, I entered a team missing one person. 2 out the 3 team members were complaining how they couldn't keep up with the workload and kept doing nothing on the group assignments. The other person and me did all the work because we wanted to get good marks on the project. Sadly, the teams remained the same on the 2nd semester, mainly because all the star students were grouped together to our chagrin. This time though, neither the teammate nor me were lenient on our comments during group assessment which influenced heavily on the individual marking.

Recently thanks to Whatsapp I've discovered a new pet peeve:
People pressing "send" after finishing a sentence (at best) instead of making new lines, resulting in around 5 new messages received at lightning speed.
Not to mention, they keep on going while I am trying to reply, losing my concentration in the process! 😡5 -
We're getting done with SidTheITGuy's bachelor party where we auctioned him off.
Before it was through, the lucky winner who snagged him at the bachelor-auction had already sold him to another, gotham's most mysterious tech heiress, looking to do a mezzanine funding round on her relationship status:

First exposure to computer?
Back in 2005, I think. Windows PC, I think. The rest is very blur.
All I can remember is it was white and monitor was big like a television. First ever computer of our family. No internet. No game except solatire and craps. Mainly just used it for porn-purpose. Did some programming assignments. Did some poems writing and then printed them out with all-in-1 printer and tried to sell the booklet to girls in public. (Obviously sold zero).2 -
Handsome co-workers in my visual range distract me from my tasks...
I need to get back in shape and start the dating game again... :'( -

Hello devs I'm back
A few months ago I joined a software development company and I was pretty specific that I wasn't going to do support or maintenance only feature development, well, this past 3 months I've been doing dev helping stablish good practices and a better architecture for the app, but guess who is joining a support team tomorrow, they sold me the idea of a refactor team, I was trilled and accepted, now they tell me it's a legacy bug fixing team, damn I hate this crap, hope y'all doing betterrant upvote it i'm back baby pichardo for president bugfixing crap another useless tag legacy support5 -
Not a kiki post 🙂
Pelmeni, the Russian dumplings cuisine, sold in Germany, have a big label on the packaging saying "Made in Latvia" since the war with Ukraine has begun.2 -
All Russian luxury brands are scam. And I mean ALL of them. No matter if it says "made in England" or "made in France" on the package, it's still a scam if it's Russian deep inside. It's just the regular shit repacked and sold at 20x the price.
Here's the algo:
1. You lookup the brand name that claims to be luxury
2. If it has something to do with Russia (Russian executives, etc) — it's a scam.
This doesn't cover the regular, non-luxury brands. AK is still a good weapon, KMS is still a good windows 10 crack :)11 -
I haven't been here for a long while but I wanted to peek in because of the dev ducks, cause I thought they would be a great gift for someone and now I found out they're sold out - my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
But now I decided I'm just gonna buy. a rubber duck and DIY it.1 -
I *cannot* be the first person in history that wants to do this.
Someone much smarter than must have already done, packaged it and sold distribution rights to the T-shirt.
Time to Google the sh*t out of it... -
I hate my tablet...
It is a giveaway from my sister and it is a bit damaged. It's unresponsive on a straight line from the one side on the middle of the screen to the other.
It's an old tablet, so it has not much memory and it lags a lot, especially during app updates.
To "work" with it, I have to switch from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa, because many apps put dialogs exactly in the middle of the screen, on the unresponsive part.
But what I hate most about this situation is that there are apps that are locked on portrait mode and I can't access them... It wouldn't hurt much if all apps could rotate from one mode to the other!!!
I'm on limited funds for quite a while, so I'm stuck with it for now. Meh... ☹4 -
Combine multiple open source softwares.
Tweak it a bit
Voila! You've a 100 dollar software ready to be sold.8 -
Started my first Android app for a town here in Luxembourg, It's a school project but the best one will be sold and the good part is that we can pick the price. But I'm pretty confident to win.
For the future? Google Firebase for sure2 -
Create my own company and finally release my app. Quit my current job and eventually start doing whatever the fuck I WANT rather than whatever the fuck I HAVE to.
I have only one life. Is it that much to ask to have it for myself, not sold to someone else? -
Few weeks ago: Please write the system design docs for feature X of the new project Y. We need it in two weeks.
Few days later: Stop working on the docs, the customer hasn't yet bought that feature.
Few days later: We found that we included that feature in the main contract already. We need the docs in two days.
Today (docs delivered a month ago): There was a misinterpretation of the requirements and the contract, the customer hasn't bought the feature with the main contract, it has to be sold additionally. You didn't do anything 'til now, did you?
It would be really nice, if sales could finally decide what the customer bought and then tell me about the requirements that are already covered in the docs anyway. But I fear it could end in asking the customer 🤪🔫2 -
Dear diary,
It's been the second day without Internet at home. I have self-exiled to my parents where the last vestiges of civilization remain. Now my laptop starts throwing tantrums and won't move beyond the loading screen. I wonder what's next to break down.2 -
As the saying goes "beggars can't be choosers" and I need to get a job.
I got approached by a recruiter in LinkedIn who had attached a PDF brochure.
It seems OKish, but the only part that worries me is "step 3" of recruitment process:
"Invitation to France and have a face-to-face technical interview and meet the team."
Will I be out of bounds if I ask the technical interview (if I ever make it that far) take place into Skype?
There are some savings, but going to France (somewhere between Cannes and Nice in summer period!!!) just for an interview that I might fail is a big gambit for me.8 -
All devs in the company are booked 120% until late summer. Boss just sold another 6000 hours cloud project to kick off in 2 weeks. I’m the PM, and my colleagues will hate me for this thinking that it’s my fault they have to work their asses off for the next 5 months!10

I walked like a mile and a half in some extremely uncomfortable boots to my uni's surplus warehouse to try and grab a tower at some ridiculously cheap prices (like an Optiplex 980 with an i7 for like $30).
I got lost as fuck because it was like 6 months since I last came here. I was there about 15 minutes after it opened and they're already sold out. Time to walk another mile back to the bus stop salty as fuck.10 -
Every god damn time I have to interact with windows I hate it more and more. I sold my old Dell PC, and said I'd install Win10 on it for the dude.
It's now been 2 hours of me trying to figure out why the Win10 installer complains about missing drivers, and trying to figure out exactly what drivers are missing, because they sure as absolute fuck don't tell you.
"A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now."
Well how the fuck am I supposed to know what driver you need? The least helpful error message in the history of computing....11 -
So my dad calls me because my uncle is freaking out about how a client messaged him and he doesn't know how to check if he can do what them asked him to. I tour them around the website he's using (as he understands little to none of it, and my dad doesn't use the site regularly so he's not versed into it as well) as to where they're supposed to look and they go check this one tab. In it, there's info of what is sold out in what day. And for each day it says "day x - y sold out" and he asks me what day it is that y things are sold out, and that it is confusing, and I'm like "are you serious it's right there". Goddamn it this guy sometimes

*confession*
I'm one of *those* developers that sold their soul to Microsoft technology stack early in their career, and then bought in into even more narrow specialization, SharePoint dev (Could easily have been Dynamics or similar) ...
...And almost don't regret it. The only concern is becoming obsolete in time, but I suppose life of a developer is always learning, so all should be fine.
Major kudos to all non-MS developers, I enjoy reading about your lives here.5 -
Right to repair by Corsair
My mouse has double click glitch...
To disassemble the mouse, first skates need to be peeled off and destroyed in order to get to mounting screws...
I was unable to find those skates online, so I reached directly the Corsair to check if they sold them. Of course they don't sell them...
Next I tried to find professional shop. I found one willing to replace switch for 50$ while brand new mouse costs 60$.
FUCK YOU CORSAIR7 -
There is a commercially sold ERP solution that has it's DB schema in excel and Other documentations in MS Word. And its not even properly structured, no schema diagrams, last updated for a 4 year old major release 😒😫.

Well, this goes back a few years to when I first started to program in Minecraft. I had an idea of developing Gun Game in Minecraft before any of these big servers had created them, so I had a few questions and asked it on Bukkit forums. So he responded to my questions and seemed interested in the idea, so one day we got to talking on Skype and were working on the project. After that project, we worked on hundreds of smaller projects and even started our own hosting company (Which was sold off now, due to us being in school). So I went from not having any programming friends to having one, just cause of a Minecraft plugin idea.1
-
Forget most useless feature, an entire, year long product. Me (at the time very junior) and a principle engineer, wasted a year bundling our product as a plugin in a third party app. 3 years later, we'd sold 2 licences. It was a buggy pile of hell.

My old mechanical keyboard broke, so I had to buy a new one. I'm Brazilian, so the local market for mech keyboards is either limited or very fancy (fancy as gaming keyboards).
So I got this amazing Logitech G610, which unfortunately is not sold with blue switches here, only brown ones. Very solidly built, well made, good extra keys and whatnot.
BUT OH MY, who ever thinks those LED effects are good for normal usage after 5 minutes of playing with them??? VERY distracting! <o>12 -
Do you have any annoying you want to get rid off, but you can't because of reasons?
I do. They are 4, but for now I'll talk about the gold medal winner.
When we met about 8-9 ago, she had just come back to town due to some very bad personal experience (not her fault). Anyway, she is polite, but her major flaw is that she is pushy. REAL BAD! And she gets mad when other people (including me) try to do it on her. Another one is having calls during random inappropriate times, because she had fight #N with her boyfriend, and last but not least, she will call when needs something out of someone.
Lately, her project is finding us a job, since we're both unemployed. Any job. The sad part is when she sends me job ads for dev jobs I don't qualify, e.g. Company X is looking for a dev with Y year of experience, knowing A, B, C & D technologies. I've told her that I don't qualify for most of the dev jobs she sends me, but she insists I should send my CV anyway, cause of reasons. Also, for some reason, I should be accounted to her for all my current choices when what I would honestly say is "BUG OFF".
Her latest endeavour is getting me one of her friends (a psychologist) as a "client". Her friend wants to have a professional website with writing posts/articles as a side dish. I'm not registered as a freelancer, so everything will be done under the counter, and her friend is OK with that. I'm no web developer, but I didn't refuse because of her backlash and also that would be a positive experience for me. Now, the juicy part. She gave her my phone number without my permission and she told me straight away. Her plan was having the three of us meet, though I don't know why and I didn't want her being around. I asked her to call me immediately, which it didn't happen. After being pestered by my friend for a couple of weeks if her friend called me, she finally did it on Monday. She didn't say to me anything I didn't know, but at least I have her phone now.
What I can offer her is a website skeleton with the usabilities she's asking. What I can't offer her is graphics/banner and security. And now I have to come up with reasonable price. Teams here ask 400-600€ for a complete website the way she asks, including VAT. I'm thinking around 100€ and I don't know when I can deliver the project. I've had some experience with Ruby and Sinatra, so I'll go with that, and I'll learn CSS along the way.
Thanks for reading till the end! 😃4 -
So there was one plus invite sale today in India !

A follow up about Mozilla IRL spotify radio.
Very interesting talk relates to internet and privacy in gerenal. (Not about programming btw)

how to setup a bait for catching Twitter bots
It feels like Mozilla is fighting for justice.
I'm totally sold.3 -
Finally I am in my new job!
Everyone is working in a project except me and I can only use IE11 and Chrome... :'( -
Yay, I inherited a project with no documentation that is soon to be out of the prototype phase in a tech stack where I have no experience. It is already sold to customers and they expect it soon.
There are so many bugs, never been code reviewed but the main functionality semi-works :(15 -
I'm asking a few questions to all the game developers here.
1. How'd you learn to make games (books, YouTube series, udemy, sold your soul to Satan, etc) ?
2. When and how did you realize that Game Dev is what you want to do?
Thanks.16 -

I went to a CV Workshop organized by my first school. The presenter was the slightly-arrogant/know-it-all/cool type of guy who's a recruiter and also has his own company he runs. The presentation was OK, even though it took longer than announced. However, there were some things that bugged me. He expects everyone somehow to be extraordinary. Granted he works as a recruiter and his clients would like only the cream of the top, but some of the examples he gave from his personal experience, he seemed to give more gravity on other traits of the candidates than their achievements and qualifications (e.g. rejecting a candidate because she had posted a photo of her clubbing on Facebook). Also, somehow he judges candidates based on their parents profession. Lucky me that I fall into the category he dislikes. Now the fun part (sorry for the long post):
Next week there's a career day. I sent my CV as soon as I got the mail and then I also phoned the person in charge (as per the instructions). Yesterday on the workshop it was said we should resend our CVs by tomorrow on another mail? No problem you may think, but that said recruiter will take a look on them and that means I will have to rework mine just to make sure it is to his liking. I'm no fan of writing mission statements, nor trying to guess what my qualities (aka soft skills) are because what I think I am doesn't mean I actually am.
So now, I'm in a dilemma. Just send the CV as is or get a mental breakdown just so to please that person?
Thanks everyone for your patience and time, I just wanted to pump some steam out me...6 -
Finally, I got my laptop back after 4 gruelling days of separation with a new disc and more RAM!!!
I can't wait to finish up installing all the programmes I need to start writing code!!!7 -
My manager during my internship in 2007 was very prone to screaming.
She took the position, because more senior staff than her didn't want it and she wanted to be in charge of them.
When people didn't deliver the results she wanted she would call them in the office, start yelling them and saying they were incompetent and demean them. And even though we were a small open office, she would send us messages through MSN Messenger (it was the it thing back then), to check on our progress or ask us to go to her office which was the room next to us.
I met many wonderful people during my internship, but I was more than glad when it finished. A couple of years later I've learnt that the branch she was managing was terminated because everyone slowly started quitting. I can't imagine why... -
After struggling all morning with my laptop, I finally accepted the fact that my 1TB hard drive died. Now I'm on a dilemma: Should I replace the drive and upgrade the RAM, or should I buy a new laptop altogether?
Current laptop is Lenovo G50-45, with AMD APU, 6GB (4+2 on graphics) and said 1TB drive.
Before this misfortune befell me, I was planning to upgrade the RAM to 8+2.
Now I'm at a loss, but my folks are willing to help.
Should I buy a new drive and RAM or should I start looking a new more dev oriented laptop? If the latter, any recommendations?3 -
I've finished the knowledge tests at the local DevJobCon and I got the following question on the easy part of the Java session:

Awhile ago I was working with an National Instruments RFID analyzer scope.. the item cost $100,000. And the vendor that sold it my company had the boldness to have Windows 7 run all the licensed software equipment on the device.
The product however did work quite well. One day I came into the office and IT "UPGRADED" TO Windows 10 OVERNIGHT.
Effectively turning the equipment into the world's most expensive brick. Luckily for me, it was my last day in that position.. got a salaried position in engineering.
A couple months later an intern was assigned to fix it.. the licenses were messed up.. he eventually got it working again. Microsoft almost cost my company $100K without a second glance.
It all worked out in the end. :)3 -
The other day I was thinking about how much more truck drivers in the US can sometimes earn delivering the goods that are sold on the e-commerce websites I build than I earn building said websites.
Plus, they get to see way more of the country than I do as a coder.
Seriously thinking that before I retire I might have to give being a truck driver a go.6 -
Inspired by a programming is a constant/continuous thing. Every small and big achievements, from squishing a bug, finding a workaround, pressing the "Build" button and the programme runs. Each time the brain feels expanded like when a baby discovers new things, a tiny creature in a gigantic Universe of endless possibilities.

Such glorious Wednesday...
#1: Friend needs me to keep her cats, hasn't called yet to give me keys (and she's leaving tonight).
#2: Got an e-mail from a job I applied, rejected cause I flunked the impromptu technical interview (with the usual pretty wording).
#3: Helping a friend with his dissertation code in Java. Just a marvellous spaghetti code with minimal semblance of a structure and a hodgepodge of various solutions found on the Internet. 2H 40M and still nothing... At least I have my stress ball to save me from mental breakdown...1 -
If you could choose one, what should happen in 2020 :

I hate being able to hear my boss in meeting with potential clients. Promising the earth then when the meeting is done tell me we have a week to make it. Not only that but then ask me what half the stuff he's sold actually is and does!?2

There once was a man who wanted to buy a canoe. He had a friend named Bee that sold canoes. So he went to Bee's outdoor supply store to buy a canoe.
Man: Hey Bee. I would like to buy a canoe.
Bee: You are in luck. We have 10 canoes. I can sell you all 10.
Man: But I only want one canoe.
Bee: Ah, okay, I will tell you what. I will sell you 5 canoes then.
Man (getting annoyed): No Bee, I only want the one canoe.
Bee: Ooh, I got you. I can sell you 2 canoes.
Man (very frustrated now): ONLY ONE CANOE BEE!
Bee: These are not the canoes you are looking for...3 -
Since I can't make many posts, I'll try squeeze them all in one:
1. Phone recruitment interview went "well", I even spoke french at some point! 😃
I have to brush up my knowledge again for the technical test (I hate them). Somehow I got excited, which I shouldn't, but only time will tell...
2. My brain is stuck with opening a Twitter account, mainly for following people/companies news. I don't know if it's worth it, so I would your feedback on this.
3. I've finally come down to listening to synthwave while coding and I was wondering if there's any good free service (I'm still poor, so I don't want neither Deezer nor Spotify), preferably with a UWP app on Windows 10 (that is not Soundcloud).4 -

Whose idea was to send an e-mail at 11pm about a dev job convention for this weekend!!! And on top of that there will be testing to weed out the candidates!
SIMPLY GREAT! I have to be off town for unavoidable family matters for three days without Internet connection...
Thanks a lot automated mail system for letting me know 4 days in advance that I will fail!!!
It's not that things were awful enough, now I have one more reason to be stressed, get more rashes and weep internally! -
Someone once told me the following:
Processors, as good as they are, will always make mistakes.
When processors (i3, i5, i7, ...) are tested before distribution, they are categorized on the amount of mistakes they make. An i7 7700k for example which makes very few mistakes is labeled as a 'Type A', while another i7 7700k with the exact same name and specs makes a little bit more mistakes, and is labeled as 'Type B'.
All the 'Type A' processors are used and sold in business class laptops and workstations while the 'Type B' ones are sold to consumers.
After some research I couldn't find anything on it on the internet.
Anyone know if this is true or straight up bullshit?7 -
Everyone around me is running like crazy to deliver a project on time (the day after tomorrow) and I am sitting quietly trying to reply an e-mail of my project manager in french...

20 years ago, in China, they sold a so-called learning-machine which is a modified version of super Nintendo with a full sized keyboard, you could use it to learn how to type, and play Nintendo games. somehow it supports basic, and the manual book have printed a full code to create a stupid game with you could move a super Mario character with arrows, me and my step brother spend a whole day typed the 40+pages of code and enjoyed the game for 5 mins. BTW you can not save your program. after that I think it is so cool to create vedio games by programming.

The Moto MC68000 CPU in the original Mac had 68k transistors. Apple sold 372k units in 1984. 68k x 372k=25.3bn
The A12X SoC in an iPad Pro has 10bn transistors.
So, if you’re inclined to really unfair comparisons:
3 iPads => all Macs sold in the first year

I had a technical test on Tuesday on Linux and SQL. I thought I failed. I get a call that I did pretty well and now they want me for an interview. Naturally, I get very excited.
I get a date for the interview and get ready to shine... until I accept the video call and find out that it is a technical interview! But this time instead I have to express myself in a foreign language.
(And also not with the people I was supposed to have the interview with)
No worse way to stress someone XYZ company! Totally uncool!!!

I see Amazon taking a lot of flak and being called a monopoly, but they aren't. Sure, Amazon sells branded items, but the majority of items are sold by small mom-and-pop businesses that have access to markets that they would not have without Amazon. Case in point, I've ordered items that have come not just from the US, where in live, but Europe and Asia. I just ordered some 4711 cologne, and was sort of expecting that it would come from Germany. Nope, it's coming from a small seller in Japan. Amazon is a global equalizer that enables people from all over the world to sell to people from all over the world. The politicians messing with that are going to remove that ability, and we will all be the poorer for it. Maybe this is a rant after all.4

I cannot remember having seen a more unethical and pushy user interface than the one of viagogo.
I'm a frustrated to close the entire tab within the first 10 seconds. It's a sad story on on how it tries to instill a sense of urgency to BOOK NOW!
100 people are looking RIGHT NOW at the YOUR offer! Stop thinking, act fast! BUY IT, YOU FOOL OR IT IS GONE!
Here, see all those other options are already sold out m( Oh look, that option over there? Just sold out in this very instant you lazy ass.

I'll take my business elsewhere.
If you develop a web shop, treat your customers as actual adults. Let them breathe. Let them make an informed decision.
If you need to rush them, your business model is broken.
If my employer would ask me to develop something like that, I'd escalate hard. saw an SSIS project once used for basically string replacement and file tasks. Asked manager permission to rewrite this Proof of Concept to something more suitable language.
manager: you can't but you have to support it.
me: but i tought it's a PoC
manager: yes it is
me: so what to support?
manager: it's been sold to a customer and in production for 6 months now
So it's a PoC which is sold and moved to prod...
I hate sales and management douches sometimes... like 98% of the time....

Seeing CAT5 Cables sold as CAT8 cables makes me think how many non techies have been scammed and don't even know it.
Like when apple marketed the 3rd gen PoS iPad as the new iPad and people starting for years after selling new ipads that were anything but.

TIL: new M2 MacBooks officially support only single external screen. Not even the Pro class supports dual. It supports single 6K monitor, but I've failed to find any userfriendly ways to get good tiling which would be equivalent to multi-monitor. The only native tilling is left/right split. TB3 can handle 3x2K or 2x4K, but Apple said "fuck you and your multi-monitor setup".
I ain't mad tho. The guy upgrading to M2 sold me his dual monitors for a really good price.9 -
If I was to talk about software, the act of coding is probably the most boring part. But birthing a program can pull from magic, animation, circus, gardening, parenting, woodwork, and a host of arts, trades, and crafts. It is a wonderful creative task that is being sold short by brilliant jerks, one trick fools, and con men.2

I wonder if people would still post pics on Instagram if Instagram hid the number of likes..
I wonder if people would still buy branded clothes if every item of all the brands both big and small were sold at same rate..
I wonder if people would still pursue their current career (jobs) if all the jobs in the world gave equal wages to every employee..
I wonder if people would still donate if they were not allowed to tell anyone about it or post their contribution on social media..
I wonder if people would still by fairness creams and stuff if we removed the mindset of superiority of whiter tones over the darker ones..
Sometimes , i just wonder...8 -
I can't seem to find the devRant hat on the store, are they sold out or did they stop making them?! >:o4

I lost my ability to enjoy computer games.
I really want to revisit my favorite ones (Unreal Tournament, everything made with Source Engine, also Life is Strange, Gish, some other indie games), but every time I try, I feel like alien. I feel like I don’t belong here. Every time there is nothing but sadness.
I even sold my gaming pc upon realizing that after completing Doom 2016 I haven’t played anything at all.
What do I do now?10 -
Good old dear me sitting comfortably and writing some code...
Suddenly, the doorbell rings!!!
"One moment! Coming!", I shout...
I proceed going to the hall, take the keys from the table right next to me and I unlock the door...
I open it and there's only thin air in front me. Downstairs I hear the building door closing and the elevator working its way up, higher than my floor...
I close the door and I go back to my desk, resuming my work and thinking:
"I don't know who are, I don't care who you are, but I will find you and I will make you pay..."
Now my coding train of thought has stopped! Thanks, unknown doorbell ringer!!! -
Soooo... Following my previous lengthy post ( https://devrant.com/rants/985618 ), I talked with that friend of a friend and explained her what I could offer her. It turns out she's being funded, so she needs to have a receipt... What really amazes me is that she knew from the start that I can't freelance for now (the taxes are very high and the legislation requires payment even during periods of no work). Oh well, back to my personal projects... 😖

Was recruited to build a text-based course where I get a nice bonus if I finish the course early. Now I know how they are always able to save themselves from giving that out. There's so much fucking red tape for each literal sentence I write! I have MULTIPLE reviewers, commenting, editing, and "suggesting" EVERYTHING I write.
News flash: this course is derived from a different video-based course that has sold hundreds of copies on other platforms, so I must be doing something right.
Just let me write the whole course and we edit it in the end!!! This treadmill is going to triple or quadruple the time until publishing...
I feel like I'm trapped in the movie office space: "every day I have 5 different bosses come and tell me the same thing"
Won't be working with this platform again. -
I went to the movies yesterday and I watched "My Lady".
The only screen of a mobile phone was that of a W10 mobile.
That really surprised me and filled me with joy... 😁2 -
When I found out that the app I have developed basically in my free time to automate most of the monotone tasks that were needed at my first job, was being sold to customers as utility tool for our devices without me getting even a penny extra!2
-
I mostly come back to programming for the kicks of when something actually works :) But the reason I started was a life changing moment of black and green Space Invaders some 30+ years ago. After that it was all about computers and/or gaming.
My mom thought she was being smart saying I could buy something for my own money. Saved like crazy and sold all my toys. That got me 8bit Sega Master System.
I continued with C64, Amiga 500, a few Pentiums and a bunch of PCs before iMacs and Macbooks took over.
There are so many better developers so just as with music I just create stuff for fun, challenge and personal expression. But at work there are also opportunities to improve the world a little bit by dev work and I'm always grateful for the chance. -
Alot of hacks around here!
An extract of some of those:
-Couldn't time the shutter right when photographing lightning. Used my oscilloscope to measure its electrical influence and anytime a peak is detected, it actuates the shutter.
-Using a lock as a heatsink for a overheating display driver ic.
-Hacking two USB ports together to get more power.
-Display module was too tall with header pins. Moved its back components to the main board and soldered the module flat onto it by flowing solder down its connecting holes.
-Not me but still interesting: Back on ye olde times when paid tv contained a disruptive H or VSYNC signal only their paid tv box could filter, my electronics prof. analyzed it and built the required comb filter on his own. Even sold some on the black market. -
I want an rx580 for my new pc build, but all of them are sold out...
Damn cryptominers, now I'm realy pissed!! 😠 -
I genuinely think that if elon musk took a shit and sold his poop in a plastic box, he would earn a couple million dollars.5

Not dev related but got offered to work at the Champions league final.

Fuking hell!
My mom apparently sold her phone which was not turning on for some reason. Earlier she told that she had gave it to a shop to get it repaired.
I'm just dumbfoudned here that she didn't even consider deleting the data on the phone or even consulting me before selling it.
Thankfully, the phone is linked to google account and I know her account password which is pretty weak. I had told her to change password which she has never done yet. Anyways, I have sent erase phone feature on Google account. Now I hope phone will come online before somebody decides to do anything with data in the phone.
Also, the phone has been super annoyingly slow recently. So I hope nobody is gonna mind that phone at all.1 -
Just married, sold my expensive laptop to pay some debts, and waiting for a very cheap refurbished laptop that I just bought. Can't wait longer!! Need to code something in React!3
-
Still not sold by OO, but I'm hook line and sinker for pharo/smalltalk.
It actually seems to share a lot of fundamentals with Lisp namely extremely tight syntax and live code reloading.
My opinions of a productive language being dependant on a specific paradigm might be changing in favour of the tooling supplied with a technology/language. -
A few years ago a client who sold printer ink on eBay and Amazon wanted to branch out to another store, so I grudgingly began to implement the new API, I followed all the API docs but no matter what, I couldn’t get it to work, eventually I contacted their support and was told it should work. Turns out the test API was faulty and that they had no interest in fixing it instead suggested we tried test data on their live account. I refused and for once the PM agreed with me and went back to the client saying the problem was the retailer.

We have deadline, there is demo of our MVP on next Monday, app is allready sold to a lot of clients etc... so... our boss outsourced our frontend engineer to another company, and left mi with all the things. Is that normal, or am i working with insane people ?3

Microsoft is shutting down yet another product:

At this point I'm neither surprised, nor mad. Simply sad, cause I kind of liked Mixer.
Well, R.I.P. just like many other MS projects...8 -
Hi devs,
I started to work as a freelancer just a year ago. I'm still a CS student. I develop apps.
I wanted to ask that if I develop an app for an individual, and they pay me. Does that mean, he can have my source code?
Or the source code has to be sold separately?10 -
Given that Microsoft will be dumping Edge down the toilet flush (and creating an Edge skin for Chrome), I will have to switch browsers (if I want to surf the Internet).
I don't want to switch to Firefox, because I find Mozilla having double standards.
It's been ages since Chrome isn't my favourite, I am forced using it at work, so I'd rather avoid it using it at home.
That bring us to the Chromium-based browsers. Of the myriad out there, the two that piqued my interest are Opera and Vivaldi.
Both have their merits and flaws, but I am equally drawn to them.
My question is which one would you pick between these two?20 -
When you read an article that WhatsApp's end of support is the last nail in the coffin of Windows Phone and you are like: "But I don't care about WhatsApp at all..." 😅
P.S. W10M user here.4 -
I received the following e-mail today:
Hey, XYZ! Could you please check the following in your web application. The data do not show correctly. Could it be a bug?

My reply:
Hey, ABC! It is not a bug. You uploaded the data into the wrong table. 😊

Seriously WTF TP-Link?
Bought an Archer T4E Wifi adapter card for my PC. This has got to be the worst piece of shit hardware ever sold.
I mean are you kidding me? This card has two TWO!! antennas sticking out of its back and won't maintain a connection to an access point that I have NO PROBLEM AT ALL connecting to with my fucking phone? And don't even try to connect to the 5G network with this embarrassment of a WIFI card.
Looking at the support forums and loads of people complain about the exact same thing without any reply from this shit company.
Seriously screw you TP-LINK I will never buy any hardware from you again.17 -
It’s all a blur but in 5th grade I was using a TRS-80 with a cassette player for storage at the library where my mom worked. Also an Apple IIe at school in the computer lab. My first personal computer was an IBM XT clone with an 8086 processor and dot matrix printer. I bought it after having fun with my cousin’s Commodore 64 and wanting one, but his uncle sold me on the IBM platform as something that I could upgrade over time. I was 13 when I first learned Assembler and BASIC. Big Blue Disk was my favorite subscription software with all the games and other shareware stuff that came every month in the mail.1

There was an Internet hiccup at work.

Weekend Project-A-thon
over a decade ago, I created a very simple php script, but because I was new to php, it took 2 months to code
I eventually sold half my interest in the business, and it was updated, upgraded, etc.
But now I have to clone it. And I have a weekend to do it. I've come a long way with my coding skills. I think it's possible.
Project Start Time: 9 a.m. Eastern.
My timer has started already. Wish me luck!
To keep me company, what is your weekend project you've been putting off, and do you think you could do it in 2 days?2 -
I am thinking about building new PC, so I made a list of components. What do you think? Any suggestions?
I don't know which GPU model/brand to get yet. Would like to play at 1440p >60Hz so GTX1070 is not enough if I don't wanna buy new GPU in a few years (probably 4-5 years as I always do).
- CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 2700X
- GPU: GTX 1080 Ti / GTX 1080
- HDD: WD Gold 2TB
- SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 250 GB
- RAM: Patriot Viper RGB Series 16 GB KIT DDR4 3200 MHz CL16 DDR4 Black
- MB: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING

I just really want to pluck my eyes out...
My sister is abroad for a music festival where she is attending as a speaker.
Her speech got almost ready at the last moment. The slideshow presentation was sloppy cause she gave some half-assed points to put. I saved the files (PDF and PPT) on her laptop and on her USB stick, I didn't keep any copies for me. She rehearsed her speech and I added some more points to enrich it and fill a bit more time. When she got there, she messaged me if it was possible to add those extra points to the presentation. I asked her to e-mail me the new points and the presentation on time (which it didn't happen), expecting a file attached to the e-mail. And guess what:
SHE FREAKIN' TYPED EVERYTHING EXCEPT OF THE TITLE!!!
AND NOW I HAVE TO REDO THE WHOLE PRESENTATION!!!
I can't facepalm myself hard enough to hop onto another universe... -
I'm currently switching off some of applications as the company I work for is being sold.
Our latest flagship product has only been in development for the past year and was showing some real promise, but all things must come to an end.
Live fast, die young leave a good looking code base.
You will forever be remembered by the git repo in the cloud. -
Low-end smartphones sold to Americans with low-income via a government-subsidized program contain unremovable malware, security firm Malware bytes said in a report.
According to the report of ZdNet: The smartphone model is Unimax (UMX) U686CL, a low-end Android-based smartphone made in China and sold by Assurance Wireless. The telco sells cell phones part of a government program that subsidizes phone service for low-income Americans. "In late 2019, we saw several complaints in our support system from users with a government-issued phone reporting that some of its pre-installed apps were malicious," Malwarebytes said in a report. The company said it purchased a UMX U686CL smartphone and analyzed it to confirm the reports it was receiving.7 -
Another day, another recruiter seeking "young", "talented", "ambitious", "driven" etc. etc. individuals approached me on LinkedIn for a phone meeting.
I wonder how fast he'll run when I mention the words "apprenticeship" or "entry level". -
The larger the company, the less money they spend on softwares. Ultimately at a large enterprise: "Do it for free, becasue we didn't calculate this in the budget. But obviously we already sold the solution to the high management with next week as a go-live date..."1

Does vim have a tree view and multiple tabs? Maybe some sort of plugin? How bout Neovim? If there is anyway to get that on vim I am sold, but until then I’m sticking with my text editor.7

“Not a security guy” no more😼
I already completed 10/16 chapters of this book, including formatted and updated every code example in the github repo.
There’re lots of fillers in the book.
😑Lots of repeating samples.
The nosql part in node.js is completely broken.🤯
The code mixed with space and tab, so I have to format it before starting the exercise. 🙀
The git repo has about 150 forks, it makes me wonder how many copies they actually sold, since the entire book is closely tied to code samples.🤔1 -
Gotta love when smartass clients claim that the feature you are selling them should've been part of the package you sold them intead of an addon.
Yeah. Like they never heard of a software updates before.3 -
Some programming languages are sold because of being simple and straightforward. That could be true, but sometimes simple things as
1 + 1 = 2
becomes something we need to read a 600-page book in order to do so. :)5 -
What is it with this trend if having a SIM card in every modern car? Fucks sake, can't even find one that can be sold without -_-6

Fuck you Coinbase.
I was about to make a really nice 20% intraday trade and the platform went down at the very moment I was buying back. This morning BTC & ETH rates were above the ones I sold off. Fuck you Coinbase.10 -
I somehow like it when some of our sales or project guys have to ask the customer what we sold 'em.
I will never understand why they humiliate themselves that much instead of getting their shit straight at least for the next proposal. -
Sometimes I wonder if it's the norm, that the frontend reassemble almost nothing on the backend...
Even worse when a solution is agreed and sold one way, but implemented another.
Usually eliminating the opportunity to properly expand on, without hacky work-arounds.. further driving the technical debt..1 -
remember Occam’s and Newton’s razors? I propose the bezos razor: “If it can’t be sold, it’s not worth discussing”.16

Rant/Help me
3 months ago:
"Hey, the domain I want isn't taken and Vultr has some cheap hosting plan, only 2.5$ a month for VPS WOW, gotta get it!"
5 minutes later:
"Okay, I bought the domain, time to buy hosti- where is the plan?.. SOLD OUT? How?.. Okay, that's not a big deal, I'll wait a day, week or even a month if I have to, maybe the plan will be available then"
That was 3 months ago, the plan is still 'Sold Out' and me being a starving uni student, I won't invest my hard earned money into 5$ plan if I know 2.5$ plan exists!
(Help me, as in - suggest a cheapo but goodie hosting, if that's not agains rules heh).19 -
Need an advice on what android phone to buy.
I am looking for decent cpu (snapdragon preferribly), decent storage, screen size around 5.5 inch and not too big. A decent battery life. Fingerprint/faceid sensor is a must. Ram at least 4gb.
I am really interested in samsung s10 however they ship s10 devices with snapdragon only to usa and china as far as I know. So In Europe s10 is being sold with exynos cpu which I heard is laggy.
Then I was wondering wether to get a Pixel 4, however I dont like that the battery is only 2800mAh so Im not sure if that will be enough. I looked at Pixel 3a bet then I'm not sure wether 4gb ram will be enough?
Any ideas? Can you tell me about your devices that you are using?9 -
Windows Phone might be well dead, but their memory still lives in Bing Rewards! 🤣
(Info: French version of tile to promote the MSN News app - I'm using it already, so everyone's happy 😉)4 -
The first would be playing some Pac-Man on a bootleg ZX Spectrum that my uncle made (allegedly, he made more than one and sold them).
Outside of games, had a Win95 PC at some point. I don't remember much as that was something around 20 years ago. -
I've been dealing with a guy who knows almost nothing about tech and always insists on asinine systems and buzz words he's been sold by 3rd party vendors. Lately he really wants to replace our relational dbs with hdfs.
Our data is sub 10 gb in size.
I've been seriously considering making a contracting company and just preying on tech fools like this, I just don't know if I could ethically swallow it. -
Stupid question
I wrote a script to scan a site for this tv I want to buy. At first, I just wrote a get request to the site every 30min. After while, I realized that the TV is selling out because it’s getting stocked, and then sold out within 5 minutes.
Can I send a get request to this site every 5 minutes, without causing harm to the site? I really don’t want to mess this guys site up lol7 -
Mesosphere sold every e-mail who registered with them to Tech Global Leads. Either that or Tech Global Leads stole a list of leaked e-mail addresses. In either case I unregistered/unsubscribed from Mesosphere and still got e-mails to those two specific accounts from Tech Global Leads with Mesosphere consulting soliciting. (So they keep e-mail information, even for accounts that unsubscribe).
TGL doesn't even have a website up. They're either amateurs or scammers. Either way, fuck you and your spam, both TGL and Mesosphere. Go die in a fire.1 -
A certain company:
1) Forbids to run its proprietary operating system on hardware that is not produced by the company itself (BTW sold extremely overpriced). Virtual machines included.
2) Makes laptops with wrong and unusable keyboard layouts.
3) Does not sell any kind of servers that can be mounted on a rack.
Why should any open source project waste resources and time to support it? They should just be left alone with their crappy software and their overpriced hardware.4 -

Well ok. So we connected and started talking.

My lang skill still are so bad but "learning in progress" -
I recently met with a client (a UK-focused homewares company sold by the likes of Next etc) who were meeting with Amazon the next day . Amazon has told them that people search for their name every 6 mins on Amazon. This according to my calculation is c. 7200 searches a month. There are 8,100 searches monthly globally on Google for their brand name according to Google Keyword Planner - suggesting that Amazon is close to becoming the major search destination for shopping (if it isn't already!) in the UK.2

I always loved playing with computers. When I was a kid, it was mostly games. JezzBall was such a classic ;). After that, it was mostly the Internet, aol, yahoo chat rooms, etc. As soon as I realize that some people's job was to actually make computers tick I was sold. Took a second to debate computer science/engineering. After that all I wanted to do was code. I graduated with a CS degree last year and I'm very pleased with my work. Wouldn't want to do anything else.

Kicking myself. Not only will I be unable to drive the 7 hours to the path of totality for the eclipse, I also neglected to buy eclipse glasses until the last minute. The only store around me that still had them sold out yesterday and it's too late to order online from the few manufacturers that still have them. Can't even find welder goggles in the right shade (14 or more). Why do I put things like this off until the last minute?!8
-
That moment when you realize that you could've dropped out and sold your project as a framework for future social media... 😖😖😖

I work in a repair shop, I have 300+ sticks of RAM laying around, from DDR to DDR3 (DDR3 of 4+ GB and DDR4 are either good for replacement on new computers or are sold immediately so don't count them as laying).
Also I have 200+ hard drives, IDE, SATA, SAS, 2.5, 3.5, 20 GB to 1 TB. Lots of them.
What can I do with all this crap? Not enough matching CPU and MB to make a working system (unless I make a very obsolete one but there's no point in doing so). I also am using single hard drives for backups (only 500+ GB SATA-3 though) so I'm mostly concerned with all that old ram. What can I do with them??8 -
Just found out Google Domains is being shutdown and all domain registrations sold to Squarespace. Somebody should be hanged for this..16

I never had a lot of faith in my dev competence to begin with.
It gets even worse on my current (and also first) job. So far I have been handed solo projects that I need to deliver in a small amount of time using tools I have no experience with. I have two other colleagues I can ask my questions, but they are too busy working on other projects they got handed. Which leaves me 80% of the time on my own.
The bright side of it is if I make it alive somehow, my resume will be diverse.4 -
Fun fact: devDucks and their capes are all sold out, and chances are they’re not getting back in stock.3
-
Well I started a new job about a month ago, yesterday the company has been sold, I'll have some options becoming money in a year.
I also got a job offer which basically upgrades my salary and my status, and a huge amount of options (an autonomous vehicle related startup)
FML what do I do?1 -
My last raspberry pi just died, now I gotta pay a super inflated price for a new one in a month because they’re sold out everywhere13

Oh boy here we lads!
Had a pretty shitty few weeks lately but the other day sort of got a bit much, first my phone's cameras started to fail and now that I've had the screen replaced, it's not covered under hardware guarantee warranties anymore, the sensors aren't working, work hours are getting cut, receiving near on 10 emails saying they are declining my resume, TAFE have no IT courses, uni is too expensive, the house I was going to buy got sold, my PC is fucking up, I've hurt my back (for the 10 millionth fucking time), none of my projects are coming together, haven't slept properly for weeks now...
Why does it always have to fucking poor when it rains, when can I just get a fucking glimpse at some sunlight on the horizon... -

Hi i dont do open source projects often .
But i want to publish some as open source .
I dont know much about the licensing i only know about gpl3
I dont know if any license offers this thing i need or not .
I need one that allows others to compile and publish their own with ofcourse the given credits
But they cant sell the app . I want keep it free for ever
I saw some big projects that people compiled and sold and that really hurts and the project developer got unmotivated and discontinued the project :(6 -
Are devDucks still being made? I just saw that they're pretty much all sold out.
If not, where else can I get such a thing?1 -

ahhh for that earlier time period where engineers didn't bother testing their designs so they could constantly role out the next model in a an endless wave of greed and cruelty while selling their children's body parts to disgusting perverse strangers with every bit of overstock sold and third world countries had their populations poisoned and our own society was left in a state of constant questioning about their own future and health even though none of this was exactly necessary..
oh wait... heh
and then they started burning landfills.

Some of you defended samsung galaxy smartphones, but you’re just lucky to get the right one. In some countries (most of them in fact) including Russia we only have samsungs on exynos cpu, that shit overheats and throttles itself down even when you’re watching YouTube. Lte quality is also garbage, s20 ultra literally loses it on arbitrary grounds while iPhone connection quality is flawless.
If you’re happy with your Samsung, chances are it has a Qualcomm soc, not exynos. Qualcomm ones sold in USA for example.
There is no obvious way to tell what soc is there when you buy Samsung. You’re lucky if it’s in fine print. You have to install AIDA and read from there what soc you’re about to buy.2 -
I will transfer my domains from Google Domains to Cloudflare or Namecheap tonight. What a disaster. I don't trust Squarespace. They are shady. Ugh. Google ruined another product. EDIT: GOOGLE SOLD ITS DOMAIN BUSINESS TO Squarespace.1

So after 8 months of stopping the development of a web app, the client decided to start pushing it for usage.
8 months ago I was almost begging him to do some testing, so I could gather some feedback and fix any issues. That, of course, never happened.
Yesterday just before leaving work I received a meeting invitation and an e-mail. Apparently the app wasn't at the "expected level given its development time". I also got another e-mail with change requests.
Someone will be getting some virtual middle fingers during the meeting... -
Agency life where the dev department plays 3rd string to our Creative/Experience team and our Demand Gen team. Mainly because the leadership has no idea how to sell dev work?
Oh, and when dev work comes in, its on a super rushed/compressed time table where we've over-promised, and under-charged.
No margin on this project? Yeah, no shit cause you sold it for 50% of what we told you it would cost, dumb ass.2 -
Just last week I made a webstore app to host some premium WordPress plugins and I'm using PayPal as payment gateway. Today I received an email that PayPal has put limitations on my account and wants me to provide them with some more details.
I haven't sold any plugins yet and PayPal putting their limitations...like what the hell man.3 -
I tried to turn on my Gateway Desktop, I didn't realize it was unplugged so I sold it.. At least I have cash for a newer model 😂

I did it. I sold my soul to the devil and contacted a recruiter myself. He helped me find a new challenge 5 years ago, maybe he can do that trick again.1

I dunno why but I'm sold by AWS and how anyone may start off on the right note when starting a "startup" project. A lot of IT folks I know have vouched for it as well. Maybe because I'm engineering graduate and I have put the costs and maintainability on top of the checklist. I even plan to take the SAA certification since it was also surveyed as one of top paying IT certs to get. But mostly I care about the stuff I can learn and rely on its ecosystem. Tell me something I should be wary about this cloud provider. Coz maybe I'm just too "sold" by the hype.1
-
!Help!
So I've been working on a side project, it's intended to be sold as commercial software. I'm honestly making it because I love it's purpose, buts it's commercial because I have costs I endured while building and to keep the service aspect of it running.
Anyone have insight into issues I might have building cross-platform software, distribution, and support of a commercial product? I'm more or less worried about the "clueless" folks who don't read FAQs.2 -
F×ck devshed.com hated working in that place. aaahhh... they sold out and are different owners since then.
-
Low code from a developers perspective:
- it's like of someone cut off my legs from the knees down, because it's too complicated, and told me to pole vault. Crappy prosthetic sold separately, and it's charged per prosthetic.
-imagine using MS Word, but you had to, search for a word by typing it in, drag and drop each word, and you are not allowed to use bigger words or images without paying for a licence.
And to those who say this is the future, try using it for a month. Guarantee you will change your tune.3 -
The genius businessman Isaacs Schlueter, who sold a common tool npm to GitHub, forced a breaking change to block yarn in a minor upgrade in August.
Every decision of trading his users for his own business growth is so obvious, so hostile and so badly executed.
Let us give a moment of silent to the damage he's done to the community, I still see comma-first and colon-skipping as an intentional habit in some open source libraries.
This very commit https://github.com/npm/arborist/... breaks so many things at once.4 -
Anyone know how to fix this efficiently? I'm calculating Realized gains but the output is ~ $120.
Because it's using the avg cost as the sales price of each share.
However what it should do sell the shares using FIFO.
But I can't think of how to efficiently track the purchase prices to use without replaying all the trades and tracking every single share that is bought and sold.
