Getting married tomorrow!!!
Holy shit!!
I'm kind of scared actually. But in a good way 😄
And here I am, in the middle of the night, trying to figure out why my fucking tests don't run 😄56 -

OH MY FUCKING GOD!
My startup actually made the first place in an accelerator program! We'll start negotiations on Monday!! I'm so fucking excited!
Plus I met a really nice person on the train on my way back home! What the actual fuck is that a nice day!19 -
After joining devrant I spend twice the time sitting on the toilet which results in my right leg falling asleep and me trying to stumble my way out of the bathroom looking like a hideous creature of the night.7
-
I'm having double feelings right now.
On my way to a best friends birthday party, really in for that!
Just bought a (for me) big dedicated server and can't wait to install it/play around with it!
😖😅11 -
Acceptable places to leave your bag when you get in, in the morning:
- Under your desk
- On your desk
- Infront of your locker
- On the back of your chair
- etc.
Unacceptable, is to throw your bag behind you and to the right, so it ends up in the middle of the floor and behind my chair.
Consistent use of this space, and me tripping over it will result in 2 things:
1. I will intentionally run over your bag, back and forth until I am satisfied everything is broken.
2. I will then pickup said bag and throw it, with force, at your head.4 -
I wish there was a way to feel well rested without actually sleeping.
Or maybe I could somehow learn to program in my sleep.
I would be so productive, and finish so many projects if those options were possible.11 -
I'm currently programming on the cms REST api for the privacy site (its finally getting somewhere by the way) and I just noticed that I'm programming way cleaner and WITH comments.
My subconcious is probably keeping the fact that the entirety of devRant will see my code in a not too far future 😅20 -
My coworker complained about an way to big Angular build (20 MB in prod!).
We looked over his code.
... Well deleting that 200 unused base64 encoded images shrinked it down to 500kB
DELETE the Code you replace14 -
In this day and age, what's my fucking excuse for not using a vpn full-time on my phone as well (next to my laptop)?
I do way more personal stuff on my phone anyways and add to that that I've got access to at least three self managed VPN servers...
Yup, going full VPN from now on.29 -
I closed my work laptop yesterday around noon and dumped water on it. I was just so fed up.
Some spilled off onto my desk, though, so i gently moved (read: threw) the offending piece of plastic frustration onto the floor and carefully dried my desk.
On my way to the trash can, i stepped on the laptop. I stepped on it again on the way back, and later, on my way out the door.
I came in to get something half an hour later, and stepped on it again. It remained a stepping stone for the rest of the day, and accrued considerable foot traffic.
I spent the day drinking peach whiskey and playing with my children instead of working on reports. It was a good day.
Don't worry: my laptop still worked this morning, though I declined to.25 -
That feeling when you suggest something to your senior and he refuses it and later on he is forced to do it in my way.
I F*CKING TOLD YOU B**CH!4 -
My ex-boyfriend once saw my post on the devRant and he said something, in a demeaning way, that don't screw up your brain with all this. Till now this community has given me support that he couldn't give me in his time. Instead he created problems. That's why he is my ex. :)
Thanks to dev Rant. :)10 -
After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... AND way too often I see online “learn programming in 30 days or learn programming in a day”... fuck off it’s all lies .. all wrong.. wrong methods wrong philosophy and I’m done with it...
I’m set on doing it this time, I’ve put it off too long, and longer I put it off the more I see shitty interviews! Time to fix it68 -
As to the request of two devRanters, I just did https://systemof.thedown.website
On my way to south Germany in the car and was bored and I've got two ssh clients on my phone ;P
Credits for the idea: @Codex404 and @xorith12 -
Just looking at code, my colleague ("Senior Java Developer"), wrote...
if (process == "null") {...}
As you can guess, process is a String.
I just don't know what I can tell him. It's just so wrong, in every possible way...10 -
Stack Overflow is my rubber duck. I can't tell you the number of times I've figured my problem when I'm typing in my question. Something about trying to find the best way to word the problem helps jumpstart my brain and so I can figure out the solution.3
-
So this happened...phone somehow turned on in my pocket and the fingerprint sensor rubbed against the fabric a lot of times...didn't have access to my phone for FREAKING 2 HOURS!! Why should my phone get locked by the fingerprint sensor?? The way I see it, if you are someone else, you either have my finger...or you don't...like you could kill me and chop my hand off or be crafty and try and use my finger while I'm asleep or drugged...either way, it wouldn't take that many tries to unlock my phone 😒😒.11

Boy, sure wish I knew about this before putting all of my passwords into lastpass. This looks way more secure. Handwriting in English is pretty much as good as encryption.10

I was looking up this vsauce video about comic sans when an ad crossed my way.
What an eyecatcher! I want a website in that style now...6 -
loooool so many people cheat & skate their way through the CS major at my university. they’re in for the rudest awakening when an employer asks them to design an algorithm on a whiteboard18

Heard my team leader is leaving, this leaves me as the only developer in the company, we went from 4 all the way down to 1... #thiscompanyisamess4

In Sweden, we say "someone has walked into the wall" when they have gone sick because of stress.
Damnit I hope I am not on my way9 -
Just got given my own internal project at the company I work for! Basically I created a gulp task for one of our projects that allows us to use version control with Salesforce in a pretty easy way and deploy without a stupid IDE (like eclipse) getting in the way. Now they want me to turn that idea into a node module we can use company wide!5

I was in my way back from work when this guy speeds off the on-ramp onto the highway and almost hits me.
I suppose you could say that it was a pretty serious merge conflict...1 -
I keep a little box with decks of cards in it on my desk. Shuffling is a good way to keep my hands busy while thinking and solitaire with actual cards is a great way to unpick the knots in my head.4
-
At the age of 9, I was getting frustrated that my Commodore 64 didn't always respond the way I wanted. So I had to teach it to do better. BASIC was the language. Plenty of GOTOs. In the end I got so much connected to GOTO idiom that I used it extensively in my C++ OO exam in college. Needless to say, the professors were stunned and blatantly disgusted with my code.1
-
What's the most stupid/raging way you broke a device ?
Me? I fell asleep in my bed, while reading some rants.. on my fucking phone and broke it while sleeping on it18 -
I regularly want to send pictures from my work phone to my private one and I've got WhatsApp installed on my work phone but no way in hell it's getting on my private phone.
Was thinking about how to exchange those images easily...
I now have Signal on my work phone as well and I can chat with my private phone 😊35 -
Embarrassing moment:
Needed to deliver apk urgent urgently for push notification testing. I was unable to receive push token. Code is right in every way. Couldn't figured out in 15min. Lead comes to my seat and asks what's issue. And hey suddenly I figured it out. It was my wifi closed.. Bullshit 😬😠4 -
I asked a question on StackOverflow. Everyone ignored me so I did find other way to do what I intended (it was still not an answer). So at least I fucking hoped to get another fucking tumbleweed badge!!!
So today a fuckhead, seventh viewer of my question answered it in a way that insulted my intelligence. So I got no answer and no fucking badge!!! FUCK.4 -
Weirdest place I've coded has to be in an Uber on my way to my wedding venue hours before I was supposed to get married. I wasn't working on a specific project it just seemed to calm my nerves down, luckily my wife understood that.
-
Let's see...
It made me anti social. It got me thinking in a very logical way, I can't connect with people.
I'd spend a lot of time (and still do) coding that I didn't make many friends and made me have social anxiety.
Nobody respects what I do or even understand it.
The one girl I would've happily fucking died in the most brutal way for with a smile on my face, wasn't interested at all... I was a geek to her and my lifestyle wasn't compatible with hers.... I wasn't good enough...
I am very self aware of my shortcomings and working towards that... But generally, I'm too fucking late to dating and all that.
Programming put me in a disadvantage in dating and social life.11 -
On my way home, just noticed, that the display in the train, is only sorting the connections in the trainstation by time, but not by date. (SBB in Switzerland, in case you're wondering)5

The interview went well and I'll be working with motherfucking Java starting next week! In the meantime, here's a wholesome spring picture I took in my way2

I recently joined a new company where work is quite different than my previous company.
Every day at work is challenging for me. There is good exposure to learn technology in depth. But time constraint to deliver module like under 3 days does not let me learn my work, also I am not satisfy with the quality of my code that I provide, it more looks like a patch. In my previous company I was favorite developer of my team but here I feel like a fresher who doesn't know from where to start.
Even I feel like my presence does not make any impact in office as I am just like an extra player of the team. I am slow at my work because I learn then I code due to which my manager does not consider me for any new work. I feel like left out in my team.
Once I overheard one of my colleague he called me helpless and were making fun of me. With every passing day I am losing my confidence.
I have no github reputation. It's like I am jack of all trades but master of none.
Every day is like big fight day in office.
I know our only way to survive in this industry is to keep on learning but in smart way. I am not sure what's that smart way?
Any advice would be helpful.4 -
So I just removed Facebook on my phone as a way to detach myself from the app since it was taking over my life, I think I'm gonna be better in the end...maybe...3
-
Best: Created my own company and have had 8 clients in 2017. Devrant has allowed me to find a community of fellow geeks. I've used github way more in 2017 than any past year.
Worst: Have had at least 2 ex-clients but I've lived and learned from them. I go on Devrant way more than I should. -
Maintaining a legacy Apache x86 PHP application that is coded in a way that it requires windows as an operating system.
Oh wait thats my job2 -
Pokemon exception handling is now my favourite antipattern. I can't believe I've never heard of it until today. I laughed way to hard in that lecture.5

FUUUUUUUUCK SERVERLESSS
We just got forced to make new project in serverless
Current issues:
- Local development sucks a cock
- Everything feels different (in wrong way)
- Deployments are shitty
- Lack of tools
Give me back my EC210 -
Was venting to my sister about the BS I'm dealing with one of my projects at work. Specifically the convoluted way we're building a prototype and the way all the revision requests are just going in circles.
Sister: Your job sounds annoying.
Me: Only when other people get involved.
Truer words have never been spoken.5 -
my way of getting unstuck is going to toilet, thats why I drink soo much liquid on work, kuz then I know that when in need, I can go "TO THE THINKING ROOM"

So my co-worker refuses to use Interface in Go because he dislikes php and interface is "the php way to do things". Anyone with experience dealing with this kind of ignorance?14

Was fixing a bug in my app since yesterday. Now I have to keep it all aside and attend a family function. Feels really frustrating to stop mid-way. 😫😣1

Enjoying my new dev environment already.
This is a real install alongside my existing windows install. Surprisingly enough, windows has in no way complained about Arch!12 -
Interviewer: "Is studying computer science the best way to prepare to be a programmer?"
Bill Gates: "No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating system." -
I've finally gotten everything on my Debian workstation configured they way I like it. Openbox + xfdesktop, tint2, compton & conky. The windows open in the screenshot are emacs, Tilix and ranger (URxvt).3

!rant Yesterday, I picked up a plate with a single fork on it and managed to drop the fork in such a way that it landed on my foot and drew blood.
How y’all doing?8 -
I like coding in a way that anyonr who comes into my code base can understand whats going on. That way more people can maintain the code base.
However, I HATE having people in my code base. Since they leave shit undocumented, and have 10 variables called "data" "items" "o" "p" and another 20 methods called "processData" "convertItem".1 -
When I get myself a coffee in the morning, opening up my IDE, looking at the legacy code.. my brain starts yelling: "out of the way coffee, this is a job for whiskey"2
-
My ex boss wants me to finish some stuff stuff for his company, which means month or two or more without getting paid, while my current job pays me 5 times more then my previous job.. No way I'll make my priority something that doesn't even give some money. Yes I'm young, yes I learned a lot in your company, but I am paying my bills, I have to eat something, and there is no fucking way I'm going to spend that much time in something that gives me nothing.3
-
Ok I just asked my manager if there's no way we can send this daily update to management once a week and she said not possible.
If a better job offer comes in, I'm taking it.
Adios, micromanagers... -
A recruiter landed in my LinkedIn inbox, I took pity and graciously provided my phone number so they could call me and beg me to leave my current job to join their company.. aaaaaand they don't call at the agreed upon time. Mate, you wanted me, not the other way around? 🤷🤭8

I'm a game designer student in a Brazilian university. In my class I'm the only one who likes code and made the secure choice to be a future game programmer.
But recently some dudes on my class started to discourage me and telling me to give up that course and change to a computer science course.
I didn't feel that way... I think game programmers who know all the stuff and process of game development( modelling, concepts etc) are better professionals than the ones who just knows the scripting process. But sometimes their opinion flows up my head and I feel so unknown if I staying in the right way or not.
(Sry if my english still bad..hope you all understand anyway)17 -
Today I told my crush that I love her. She said no, but in the nicest way possible. She's so cute 😍20

I had Highway to hell ringing in my ears while I‘ve read an article about Facebook planning to offer their customers a way to connect their bank account to Facebook...

Was on the public bus on the way to work... was snoozing on a seat next to a window when a droplet from the air-con vent dropped in my mouth... instantly woke up.
Guess I found my not-so-reliable alt caffine source.1 -
I'm sick of starting and never finishing projects because I just can't keep interests. For now forward, all of my work will be Open Sourced.
That way at least some other poor bastard can use some of it.
I'm in the process of moving my projects to github now.1 -
Worked in a company that had a lot of problems reusing code / UI across many similar iOS apps. Current devs were basically trying to build this: https://jasonette.com/ (after other multiple failed ideas).
I argued for weeks after joining that this is way too much, with better use of storyboards and autolayout we can fix the majority of our problems. They did everything short of laughing.
Few months later managers in my office were tired of them so gave me a chance, I build an app my way, the most senior of them build an app their way.
Long story short, my app was a bit more complex, both had the same amount of time. I finished 2 days before the deadline, he went 8 weeks over.
Never felt more vindicated in my life. Mysteriously he and another dev randomly "decided to leave" 2 - 3 weeks later. -
First day at work, my PC starts updating, reboots and suddenly, the boot partition is corrupt.
Nice way to start in Dev.3 -
They are paying me 6€/h, to develop in fucking FoxPro, as a freelancer, illegally.
I don't know how to tell them I'd make way more money as a dogsitter (and also enjoy it way more).
It all began as a favor for my old company, "we really need it plz plz" and then I became a slave.15 -
Fun way to confuse the non-tech people in my dorm... Making magnets out of some stuff I’ve fixed 📱2

I just met the human version of the zootopia sloth an he is part of my team now... My colleague and i just sit in every daily scrum call and realize we totally work at a way faster pace than him. It is so annoying.5

Built my own IoC container for C#. This taught me way too much about SOLID principles and dependency injection that i could give lessons now 😂
I'm still using my own IoC in my projects... It's great 🤘11 -
The WiFi at my office requires username and password to sign-in and logs out after every few hours. Then I have to tap on "sign in" and submit the username and password again.
Is there any fucking way I could automate this.......?12 -
I'd post a pic of my setup but in reality my workspace is any space I can perch my laptop and be out the way of customers and colleagues.

Thanks a lot guys! You are really awesome! :')
I promise (in a non-js way) I will use that stressball and take a lot of care with it.
Thanks to all the 203 cool devs that ++ my rant!! -
As someone who started with MSDOS 6.2, the idea that I can now put emojis in my directory names in Google Drive fascinates me way more than it should. I've never been able to find my files faster than now.2

Took up computer course, never used nor seen a computer in my life. Was good at written tests, now first time to use the lab and first time seeing a PC
Prof: Today you're going to create your own bootable micro floppy disk. Afterwards you're going to load it with SideKick and PC Tools. Turn on the PC in front of you and insert your double density disks as soon as you see the C: prompt
Me: my disk won't go all the way in
Classmate: just push it in until you hear a click then it will lock
Me: still won't *pushes really hard until I heard a crack... my disk was inserted the wrong way... it did lock though*
Everyone in class looks at me and I start questioning my life choices. I could've sworn our Prof's face turned white -
Recently not a single fucking thing is going my way...... Every goddamn new thing i try, screws me over in some way... And when I finally think somethings working, I get fucked more than a highway hooker.1

Dev.to app asks me to type in my github username and password into the github login page opened in their app. Is there no better way to do OAuth on Android apps?8

I want to say to my cheating whore of an ex, you were never worth the time nor the effort. You are my only regret in life. There are actually way more pretty and nice and probably honest girls than you'll ever be!30 -
I'm definitely not a person who says or thinks of those things liberally, but.. I think I might have a ghost in my apartment :)
I have no other sane/rational way to explain all those noises...7 -
My partner says I'm too much of dry logic and lacking in emotions. The way I want to find logic in everything and ignore illogical spontaneous emotions... Isn't helping me in here.
Just wanted to vent out and ask whether this is the curse of the nature of work... with tech I am in (I fantasise it to be that) or is it just My individual problem?15 -
It sucks to have memories assigned to specific sounds.
There are old songs that I love to listen to, but I keep thinking of heartbroken moments, the death of my grandma, my beautiful non-depressive childhood moments etc.
One method to avoid that is to listen to these songs again, but with "great" memories. That way it gets overwritten.
I may sound like a cry baby, but I had to let this one out of my soul to relieve myself in a strange way.3 -
It's been 1 year in my crappy yet comfy and high paying IT job(my first job).
I have already been in 2 dev interviews, with 3 more on the way.

Ugly(beautiful for me) fact of remote working: I asked for a highly deserved raise. Manager said I should be concerned for my job safety rather than raise. I couldn't get the raise but I increased my hourly rate in another way.

No way!!! a theme update messed up all my work in a WordPress plugin, I need a way to inherit a theme plugin and edit it using a child plugin, but no, WordPress is completely a piece of shit!!

Never gave much consideration to new year's resolutions, but here we go:
- Make my life less shitty
- Find a way out of my depression
- Get back to my old rythm
- Be in control of my own mind and my body again5 -
As a developer, I have stopped seeing problems in my everyday workflow. I guess my mind makes workarounds without me noticing.
Example, a lot of the people around me complain about slow internet at my place, I've never been able to experience it that way. -
Random thought:
I rarely see emojis on devrant and most of the time I see them, they are used in a rather cringe-full way. There are some posts however, which use emojis in a way I like, for example to replace the client's name.
But my favorite emoji is still the shrug emoji, not the Unicode shrug emoji, but the *real* shrug emoji. ¯\_( ツ)_/¯10 -
Starting a new project:
1.Think of a new/exciting idea
2.Start imagining and planning in my head
3.Start working on my idea
4.Give up mid-way
5. Get depressed
6. Get back at it way behind schedule and still not complete it
7. Go back to step 1 except that's basically how I start something new and not just a project :)4 -
Do you wear a wristwatch? For style or confidence? I have a problem wearing one. It gets in the way as I type on my keyboard. Or am I wearing it wrong?24

I am a lazy ass dev.
All I would make is a way to control my machine by thought.
I could then proceed to spend the rest of my days developing in bed, ordering food online and never having to move a single muscle ever again. -
Judo.
I might sound like one of those wierdos that are overly into Japan, Martial Arts and such, but I really enjoy Judo.
It is a sport where you have to FEEL the contact with your opponent.
Practising Judo made my day-to-day stress go away in just about 20m and also kept me in good shape, made me meet a lot of people/friends, lead me to live in a certain way and interact with people in a certain way (a good way, actually).
It also taught me which parts of the body are the most dangerous/fragile and cause the most pain.6 -

Developer: we are going o have to do it this way because it's the only way I can get it to work.
Other developer: what are you on about that's a easy thing to do you should not be doing it that way you idiot are you thick or something! do it this way the correct blah blah way, "let me show you moron (says out loud to everyone in the office) to show how superior and awesome they are"......
Two hours later, "yes we will have to do it your way in the end, my way doesn't work"
I fucking told you that 2 hours ago. Some people just don't believe lol #timewasted1 -
protip for my colleague: putting everything in the users controller and views isn't the proper way to use an mvc framework....
...and duplicating - no, triplicating everything for different types of users doesn't make it any better -
Just drove home after working late at the office. Was kind of in the zone and didn't wanna stop.
On my way I see the police closing the road in front of me, because of a pretty bad accident that happened a couple minutes ago.
MFW Coding saved my life! -
Since learning how to program, I have started to see the world in a different way. The algorithmic and Mathematical way of approaching computing problems I have adapted to approach all of my problems. Everything is just a problem that can be solved by taking a logical approach!

Recently made a sub 750 euro in home server with raid 1, to back up all pc's laptops and smartphones in the house to. Never been better!
Using a simple little daily backup tool on all pc's, and another app to sync 2 way to my phone, i was able to have all my data safe on that home server.
It even allows me to edit content on my phone which will sync overnight, because of the way usb access is shit on android since.. 5.0?
I am loving it! Worth every penny and week of setup effort.3 -
Java: each type is required being in a seperate file with the type's name, many of my projects have way to many files, half of them for really small interfaces or classes16

So I got some new methods to call, when I tried to call them the usual way, it didn't work quite well.
Surprised, I asked the coder of them.
"Yeah, we're using the new way, you don't mind ?"
nah, no problem, I'm starting to develop my skill in divination and mind reading, that was just my usual training.1 -
Lol!
Mistakenly clicked on some old link in my bookmarks, fell on this. I still don't know what to think!

So after a few struggles on my current uni assignment I’ve come to the realisation I need to change the way I write code, or at least the way I think about the code before I start.
I have a tendency to rush into coding something before I’ve planned it out properly, and over the last couple of days stupid mistakes on my part caused hours of stressing.
Are there any good methods for sitting down and planning stuff like this out, or is it just a case of getting some paper and a pen and writing out the logic etc in whatever way makes sense to you (me)?7 -
I always challenged myself to explain my work in a very approachable way. Everyone knows what I do and in a way how IT works 🎉3

My biggest challenge was trying to convince my old boss why things need to be done the way I'm saying and not the way he wants (of course, arch wise and not business wise)
After giving up, I ended up going back to collage, studying Masters in Business Administration just to know how managers think, took me two years, and now I'm in my final semester, even though I left my old job, I am now able to handle things in a better way in my current one regardless if I was arguing with general manager, or project manager, luckily clients are not allowed anywhere near me ... -
In my experience object oriented is very good for composing high level abstractions into a complete system. Functional is awesome for validation, parsing and massaging data in any way and imperative is tithe most useful paradigm to handle side effect dependent code that either manipulate the computers state ( read/write) or communicate with external systems.
The people acting as if one of them is the one true way are misleading you.3 -

I take a moment for myself and assess the situation from a bird's view.
Then, I objectively look at the current situation and my response/reaction to this and try to change my thinking process/acting to a more rational one.
But, also, my general way of thinking in the cyber security world plus how I'm hardwired to think in a 'paranoid' kind of way makes my current job so fucking perfect for me that i often think about that and the fact that there aren't many people around who have this.1 -

Wonder if I’m alone on this:
I have habits.
Always use the same cup, with very same amount of coffee grounds. Same four presses with the same fingers on the coffee machine.
Same way I place the cups in my desk. Same way I carry my notebook, same way I dry my hands. Same exact spot I place my card on the rfid reader. Use same elevator, same locker. God.
You name it, I do it on my own particular way.
Thing is, that I think about it. I do it consciously. I am just happier if things stay the way they are. It not just muscle memory thing.
Not judging here, just wonder if there’s people who can relate as much 🧐7 -
i like to code because:
- it's challenging
- it's very personal, it's my way to solve the problem

I'm on the way to building my own B2B SAAS business. I code all day, sleep for 3 hours, have no money, and sometimes do a couple of freelancing projects to survive.

One of my bad dev habits is that I tend to take up too much work because a lot of devs I had to work with seemed not competent enough. It's a bad habit because I get way overworked which influences code quality and deadlines.
I have to learn to trust more in others and give up some responsibility... it's hard though.
I think a big influence on my mindset has been that I never worked in a team bigger than 4 developers and I had way more experience in web dev than the others.
I sometimes may appear as an arrogant prick, but it's not intentional.9 -
We have a list of 1.5k different dependencies for various projects. And they wanted to check if each of those deps has been approved by the management.
They have no way to automate this. (I believe there is always a way to automate any fucking thing but my pm says there is no way)
And no employee in the company was keen to do this task so they decided to give it to interns.
Now I am sitting on my table, copying each and every dep, pasting in the browser (on their portal ) and noting down if it's approved. If it's not, I have to note the latest version that had been approved.
I have been doing this from morning. 400 done. 1000 to go.

Our project manager is a past-retirement-age consultant who prefers to communicate the old-fashioned way, which is to physically pop in to my office asking questions about stuff that isn't even urgent and could easily be dealt with in jira or by e-mail FFS. Way to go disrupting a dev, break my flow and deprive me of my joy of working! He even says it himself: "May I disturb?" My answer is "No, but now that you already did, spit it out!" He's a nice and funny guy, I give him that. But I don't like this particular behaviour of his. I've complained to him directly and also to my boss, but to no avail. This is where devRant comes in, to let the steam out. Anyway, if I have it my way, we will definitely *not* be hiring the same consultant for our next project.2

Can we please normalise using JSON bodies for GET requests? the Death Valley of PR approval
I have almost 3 years of work experience in programming professionally. Currently this is my second company. Previous company I worked for was very loose regarding clean code, code readability, tests etc. It was their way of doing things fast, making working changes quickly was the most important thing due to its business. Now I work in company where I spend a lot of time in some limbo when my code works and my code is merged. It sucks, I make all kinds of mistakes which would be tolerable in my previous workplace, but now it keeps me from releasing code. I now the way I do things now is the right way and it will result in me growing as a specialist, but it is very frustrating and damages my self esteem. I hope it will pass one day.7 -

My biggest dev regret is being complacent in my programming ability from way too early on. I learned a bunch of stuff from intro programming classes (which I always brushed off as "unnecessary" and "boring") because I was too ignorant to accept that writing the same Python code over and over wasn't progress. I'm way behind where someone with 7 years of programming experience should be, because I spent 4 of those years writing the same garbage.

Back in my classic asp days, I used to average 12 hour work days with a few 16 hour days as the deadline drew near. No pills, just caffeine, junk food and cigarettes.
I'm sure the way I behaved in my 20's has cost me a decade of my life.
The worst was an 19 hour stretch, but I started getting confused and puking so I slept for 3 hours before finishing and then presenting.
I'm just glad those days are behind me.
I think I'm way more productive and healthy now at just 8 hours a day. -

Was told at work today that I don’t follow directions closely enough and the lack of attention to detail in my work is a problem.
I remember being this way since my first elementary school teacher pointed it out to me. I’ve always been this way. It’s how my brain is wired. No matter how hard I try, I always miss something. Especially when it is a really complex set of tasks. I’ve literally got the results of a cognitive test I took in college documenting and quantifying my working memory deficits.
You think you’ll change that now, after more than four decades of me being like this, with a performance review? Good fucking luck!8 -

Got stuck on a Terraform issue, so I checked in my branch and sent it to my manager. He didn't offer me any suggestions at all to my code, but instead sent me a way more crazy complicated template he wrote that doesn't help me in any way what so ever with my issue. There's a right way, and a wrong way...
Correct:
if (version <= OLD_VERSION) {

else { ... something new ... }
The wrong way:
if (version = NEW_VERSION) {
... do something new ...
} else { ... do something old ... }

With firebase, is it possible to see events in realtime? I know how to debug on my device via DebugView via adb. I am so done for today. I was trying to get this encryption work in Rust, but no fucking way. If I encrypt data in PHP, it is just impossible to decrypt them in Rust. If I encrypt something in Rust, I can decrypt it anywhere, but not the other way around.

Shit, where is my wallet? (I forgot it on my desk 🤦♂️) -
Made big change got the way some code worked. Fixed one error in my code that always causes an exception, and expected to spend another hour working on the code until it works, then having it compile and run without problems after fixing that issue. I was shocked it actually worked the way it should.

Thought this algorithm keenly, it's like the best way I could or it could ever be done (in my head)...
there is no way this is going to fail
Then it fails terribly 😡😡
These are the times you feel like changing your career then un-installing devRant -
Got rid in Windows completely because I realised I could never mine without the i3-wm. I can't help but remember when my Pokémon leveled up way back in the day and think

Just learned ansible. Its cool. I can see how powerful and useful it is. But way too much linux involved. Not my cup of shit. I want my shit done in java and nextjs (nextjs is my new side bitch sorry java and angular). I like terraform more than ansible11

On my way home from work

And my colleague who can actually use his mic don't know all the answers

But the other developers can't hear me because I'm on my way home1 -
I have the creeping feeling that my laptop is going to kick the bucket (in some way or another) soon. I've had two laptops die on me, both times it was something breaking inside the HDDs and I ended up loosing almost all of my data in both cases.
This time I want to be prepared. How do you guys back up your stuff? Is there a way to take a complete image of all my files? (for windows) or should I manually sift through my files and save them in an organized manner on an external disk?11 -
Got really damn tired of all the "dirt" in WordPress, so I decided to build my own CMS (just for my website).
Wordpress is nice for just blogs, but going anywhere beyond that becomes dirty really quickly...
I learned that the hard way -
Everyone's stressing and regretting not buying/investing in Bitcoin when it was hella cheap way back when and now it's even harder to join in with the whole bubble view.
Don't mind me and my Forex though. I'm sticking with the other traders of actual currencies.1 -
Idiots in my team
1) Fullstack : ask's way too many questions.
2) Tech manager - knows nothing about management
3) backend : assumes he know's everything and when asked says he know's nothing -
Hello, I'm kinda stuck in this problem: Lets say, I want to give each of my users a dedicated IP address. How do I do it? & what's the best way to do it with python?
No need to share code, just some instructions/guideline would perfect. Thanks in advance.19 -
How can you make a login form in which details are filled via voice? One way is that we can use pyauto gui for fetching coordinates but it's not working as per my wish...8

why am i not able to find a way to use multidimensional associative arrays in vba?
plus: why am i too dumb to see my own data structure and process data sheets in a complicated way instead of using prepared data with a simple string split?3 -
I've just delivered the worst piece of crappy and twisted code that i've wrote in my short programming carreer(still at uni) hope god have mercy of my soul.

Have you ever built games you've seen in movies?
I am just recreating some games (in a safe way for gamers) from the series on Netflix "Alice in Borderland"
My favorite game, is that each user chooses a number from 0 to 100. I don't whant to spolier the show :x1 -
From this article "Fix Ubuntu Desktop to Boot without Monitor Connected" https://bonusbits.com/wiki/...
Solution: "Another solution which is the way I'm headed is to just buy a dummy hdmi/dvi/vga dongle for around $10."
I know.. in opensource world it is always someone else's fault, in the same way, as always, my position about it is: "Fuck you ubuntu devs, you bunch of stupid idiots"3 -
Removed Facebook and Google chrome in my phone 2 months ago (way before I installed devRant) and I was able to focus more on daily tasks and life, in general.5

The tokenization of Orchid files depends on the exports of imported files, but in a way that never influences their exports or imports, so Orchid allows circular references.
I sometimes feel like my subconscious and conscious mind use the scope of my projects to annoy each other.2 -
I messed up something with my git and now it opens git log everytime in vim, which i don't want. Is there any way I can just print it using less or cat and not open in vim?1

Have been searching on this topic alot lately, but I cant find any good solution, in my opinion.
I have a system where I want to encrypt some data in the database, so it isn't in plain text, but how would you do it properly?
It has to be decrypted to view the data in the system, but how to manage it?
How can I store the keys in the right way? In my current trial, I have a encryption key and an iv, but wouldn't it be wrong to store the encryption key in the config file?
Can't really see how to grasp this the right way and in the same way have it as secure as possible.
Is it just stupid in general? -

There are so many options to pimp my linux system. Is there any point in time, where I will be finished customizing/prettifying my linux? I highly doubt.

The craziest way to send notification from firebase to Flutter depends on my_sql DB
Ok, I tried so hard to deal with notification in my app by specific conditions in my #my_sql DB
The background work in #flutter is kind of not easy to deal with, so here's my crazy way to achieve that:
I connect my app with #firebase and every time a new mobile open the app it rejecte it's #token in the DB
Now I create a public #PHP file that has access to my my_sql DB and #firebase1 -
Luckily for my purposes SSD doesn't have to be accurate it just has to fail royally in a way which is highly accurate in its persistent failure :P8

React is so flawed in the sense that it forces you to go a very round about way to implement interaction b/w sibling components..which just gets worse in large scale projects
I had to implement my own event management system for React that worked well in conjunction with Redux.4 -
My Spark Program to process changes from Kafka topic to DB table is working end-to-end. But when it is manually terminated when an insert/update/delete is in progress, the whole tables data gets dropped. How can I handle this in a safe way?3
