My morning:
Me: Why did you just delete the failing unit tests?
Intern: I debugged it for a while and found one of the other developers broke it with his recent changes. I couldn't fix it.
Me: Did you let him know he broke it?
Intern: No.
Me: So you just deleted it and decided to pretend the feature isn't broken?
Intern: ... No ... I mean ... well you told us yesterday we needed to have all the tests passing.
(I NEED a stress ball people)30 -
Six months ago my girlfriend broke up with me...
BUT since then I've...
•Found the wonderful world of devRant
•Gotten back into electronics
•Taught myself PCB design
•Gotten back into programming
•Made a discord bot
•Started teaching myself calculus
•Began building an ai for said discord bot
•Designed a wireless mesh networking NIC for the TI84+CE
Sure I feel like shit most of the time but before I did anyway but I've been super productive and it feels kind of nice45 -
The Perfect Storm:
My worst coding mistake? Yeah, let me tell you about that. I pushed a simple JavaScript/HTML change without knowing that the stupid header was shared with another "not so important" section of the site called "My Account" where people go to pay for their services. I call it the perfect storm because I left early that Friday for a weekend cruise and right before leaving I pushed the change, sent the request to push for production and left. When they noticed that clients were complaining about not being able to pay they started reversing most changes of all teams trying to fix it but they never touched mine because they knew I wasn't working on the backend. My whole team worked over the weekend trying to find the issue while I was having fun in the cruise. They ended up reversing all changes by Sunday night and it took us about 4 more days to figure out that my simple JavaScript/HTML change broke the site and prevented 30 million customers from making payments that weekend plus it broke the whole 2nd release of the month.... yeah, nothing major.21 -
I've always find it weird when people said "You never know how much you love something until it gone"
Until i broke my keyboard's Left CTRL.11 -
When I was a kid I used to play on my old Pentium computer all night after my mother sleeps. One night she caught me playing, she pushed the cabin from the table and broke it 😵. After then I tried to fix it and succeeded. Since then started learning about computers and now a back end engineer..6

My room fan broke today....
And it has been hot for a while now in The Netherlands, so every store I went to sold out.
So I made one myself :)
On a side note, my pc temperature has never been lower :')18 -
Girlfriend: How was your day?
Me: Oh, Grand broke stuff fixed it,
broke more stuff, fixed that. then almost nearly got something kinda doing what i want.3 -
Sister comes into my room
"Can you look at moms laptop, it stopped working I'm scared I broke it"
Ask why
"Idk it just stopped working, all I did was install adobe flash player I dont think that could do it could it?"
Top kek
Take a look

"Mom is going to kill me I broke it im so worried" -> relieved laughter

PM: Hey Brod, I know your really busy refactoring to ES6 but I think our Ruby app broke, could you fix it?..
Me: Ask Tom, he's the only one here who knows ruby he wrote the app..
PM: I didn't want to interrupt his Skype call.
Me: he's not on Skype, that's his face, he's taking snapchats.
PM: oh, well I don't want to really interrupt that either.
SAY YOU HATE ME. JUST SAY IT.8 -
Me: Can you go to that page and see if the issue is fixed?
Colleague: if I go there it breaks things
Me: yes, it should be fixed now, can you please check it to make sure?
Colleague: but if I go there it will break things
Me: Can you just go to the page
Colleague: it broke something
Me: what did it break?
Colleague: I don't know
Me: ...then how do you know it's broken
Colleague: because the gallery doesn't work
Me: WELL THEN THATS WHAT'S FUCKING BROKEN THEN ISN'T IT13 -
Just took apart my laptop to dust it out from the inside. Had it back together, put the battery in. "Alright, time to make sure I didn't break something"
Beep....beep beep beep....beep beep beep....beep
"FUCK I FUCKING BROKE SOMETHING WHAT DID I BREAK?"
Google Lenovo post codes (Thinkpad laptop). DIMM issue.
"Oh fuck I forgot to put the RAM back in.."
Perfect now7 -
Me: Damn it guys, you broke the master branch again.
*Fixes master branch*
*15 minutes later*
Coworker: Bro, master branch is broken again.
Me: Oh for fuck's sake, who did it this time?
Coworker: You did.
Me: I have become the very thing I've swore to destroy.1 -
Coding won over my first girlfriend!
My senior year of high school I taught myself C++ and thought it was the coolest thing (lol). So I wrote a stupidly simple program that would ask your name and output a random riddle. But if the name was hers it was a riddle in which case the answer was "a date". Looking back, even if she was on my robotics team it was the nerdiest thing.
We dated for 8 months and broke up as friends. But to this day it provides a great story as I pursue software development.4 -
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it - unless the customer's paying."
Rule I've never learned and main reason why I don't have enough money despite 25+ years of experience.1 -
Riskiest Dev choice...
Leaving a previous job, moving 1000KM (620 Miles) away with no job prospects and going absolutely broke.
This was all in the name of “I need a better job”, so what better way to force yourself to get one.
I’m currently in my second job since then and now make just over double what I was earning before.
Sometimes it takes a high risk to get out ahead.4 -
Friend: I don’t need git. Git is for people like you who cant do good backup of their code
Me: Yeah, yeah, go do whatever you like...
2h later comes to me:
Friend: Can you make me repo and show how to use it...?
Me: What..? You drunk?
Friend: Naaah, no... My disk broke while ago...
Karma is a bitch :D6 -
> git commit -m 'fixing what I broke earlier'
> git pish
> git: 'pish' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.
Did you mean this?
push
> you know I meant push, why can't you leave me alone and just do it13 -
Just upgraded my company's ecommerce site to the latest versions of everything and nothing broke.
I don't trust it.4 -
Reinstalling arch. I broke it while grading homework. Sad. Also worried my phone is going to ring and I'm going to not have my laptop ready.16

My code broke for no reason.
I added a log statement to see why.

It worked....

Me and my girlfriend just broke up.
I was sad at first but now I can really start focusing on some really interesting projects.
Such as my new secret website that I will release soon. I think you'll like it.10 -
Not a rant, but had to come here to post this.
I couldn't resist pranking my wife with the age old "Oh my God, I broke your laptop" prank.
SHE DID NOT FIND IT AS FUNNY AS I DID.
Anyone else tried it? If not, definitely try it.20 -
after spending a day figuring out why my code does not work, i finally realized someone broke master
then i found myself in the following conversation
jim : "yeah, we found out about it yesterday, i am working on a fix right now"
me : "so why did you not send and email to everyone that master is broken, don't pull changes"?
jim : "hey... someone told me to fix it, so that's what i am doing. that doesn't include sending an email. if you want to, you can send it.. "7 -
Oh, we don't know why it broke. I know you just did A HUGE FUCKING DATABASE SEVER UPGRADE to the server we're connected to, but no one understands this code, so can't update it to work. Can you roll back 3 VERSIONS so our application that hasn't had a code change in 11 years is optimized?2
-
In the span of a week, I:
* broke up with my girlfriend
* had to make a site go live for a client that wouldn't fucking cooperate and give me what I needed to get the fucking site live
* was given legacy code for a wordpress site that looked like what a fucking brainless monkey would type out by smashing its head repeatedly on the keyboard.
It can only get better from here, right?5 -
End of second week at a new job. Found what I thought was a bug and wanting to impress I fixed it. The dev reviewing my code had just started a week before me so he also had no idea what was going on. It went live Friday afternoon.
Come back Monday morning and turns out I completely broke everything and nobody could use the site all weekend. I thought I was done for sure. Was shitting myself all day waiting for the call.
TURNS OUT NOBODY EVEN NOTICED4 -
People: "N00bPancakes! Your code broke something!"
Me: "Holy leaky diaper, I had a weird feeling about that code!!!! Stupid me!!! I'll get on that!!!"
-furious clicking-
Me: "How could this even .. .wait a second..."
- reverts last merge -
- still broken -
Me: "See I knew it wasn't my code...."

Just broke up with my girlfriend and it feels AWESOME! Like I’m free now! I finally can do what I like to!
Finally! To live without regrets and fears of not being able to entertain someone. It’s finally my thoughts, my music, MY life. My fucking life. Just me as is and it’s awesome. Finally, after three years of suffering.
FUCK YOU16 -
My code just broke during a presentation and I wasn't there to fix it. My CS professor got embarrassed in front of a bunch of future students.
I had made a last-minute change right before going on vacation... Never doing that again!4 -
I accidentally broke our office’s tablet device. Operations manager said it will be deducted from my salary next month.
Few weeks later, my operations manager breaks his laptops touch screen. I almost did a naked run in excitement.9 -
I broke the toilet seat on day 2 at the office and have been watching it get worse and worse until it silently got replaced two weeks later.
Oops.11 -
PM had a bad habit of breaking me out of my zone so I had a talk about what that means.
I explained the idea behind how interruptions can cost productivity. He seemed to get it, or so thought. Said he'd message me as to not break the zone. Good good!
He messages me with a question, then walks over to ask if the message broke my zone.

Fuck Firefox's CSS engine! Why is it so fucking buggy?
I needed to position some elements in a circle, so I used Math.cos(Math.PI / 2) to calculate their x positions. So, mathematically speaking, that should return 0, right? Turns out in JS it doesn't (because fuck precision). It actually returns 6.123233995736766e-17 and I was using that in the style, like top: offset + that.
In chrome it was working perfectly, but in Firefox all hell broke loose. All animations stopped working, scripts stopped working, demons were eating people alive.
And I lost hours hunting that down. My fault because I should have tested it immediately on other browsers, but fuck!11 -
Me: Hey Steve why are you working at this workstation today?
Steve: Cause I broke my computer and the one next to my computer, and this one is taking so long to sign in.
Me: It's probably just taking long because it's talking to the other two to find out if it should log you in.
Steve: Oh dear, can it still talk to the one I turned off?1 -
So how is your Friday?
Well let me tell ya, fixed a production issue and I'm totally exhausted and to top it off my girlfriend broke up with me.
I need a fucking drink!5 -
So it happened that a roll of my office chair broke. Since the ordering process in our company is a nightmare and takes forever AND my employer is too cheap to buy enough adequate replacement, I had to draw and print a spare part myself...9
-
What's the most stupid/raging way you broke a device ?
Me? I fell asleep in my bed, while reading some rants.. on my fucking phone and broke it while sleeping on it18 -
Aaaaand my whole world came crumbling down. All I have is a laptop with a battery backup of 15mins, and now the charger broke.
I was almost done with coding a nice feature, just few more lines and I would have been able to push.
But, rather it went dark. And now I can't code, nothing matters, everything is meaningless 😞10 -
After a nightmare weekend where moving my 80 year old desk caused the wood to completely split and almost broke my computer and screens in the process..... I felt physically sick.....
Somehow I became a carpenter for the day and rebuilt and resized my desk to make it better then ever.....
Couldn't be happier with the final result tbh!10 -
I was asked by a client to code review their platform built in PHP. The platform was becoming slow and new features built by their current IT supplier broke existing features.
I gained access to the source code... One PHP file (index.php) containing about 80K lines of code... I am impressed and disgusted at the same time. 😂3 -

I feel so great after switching from Windows 10 to (GNU/(REEE))Linux Kubuntu.
No annoying and redundant programs that are not quitable anymore.
It is like having a rooted phone. I am the god and not Microshit.
I am free. It feels so relaxing.
Sure, while setting this new system up, I broke a lot of things (even with years of preknowledge on linux servers), but I finally managed to finish it.19 -
The handle on the faucet in one of the bathrooms broke off today. You can still operate the faucet with some finger strength. It is just difficult. We also got a reminder today that we are not to be streaming video or music using the company wifi. They ask that we use our own bandwidth on our phones.
So on the bathroom door where the faucet handle is broken I placed this sign:10 -
Today I broke our testing server.
I accidentally (don't even ask, I'm stupid) renamed the /lib folder and nothing worked anymore. Not a single bash-command. I had to shutdown the server and reboot it with a recovery-cd to rename the folder again. Luckily it all runs in a vSphere so I didn't even had to stand up from my desk.4 -
Cousin: my computer is broke
Me: oh, what happened?
Cousin: i dropped it and now it doesnt want turn on, can you fix it?
Me: im a programmer...
Cousin: yeah but you can fixed its the same thing!

Had a 1:1 with my boss last night and together we figured out a tricky bug related to my PR. However, either my PR or that bug patch broke a tangentially-related test. Queue my usual exhaustion, and I gave up trying to fix it.
This morning, I'm looking at it and nothing makes sense. My change should not have broken the test. So I reran the controller's tests, and... they all pass?
What is logic.
Good thing, though; that test leads to a few rabbit holes I haven't even begun exploring yet.
Oh, never mind. It broke again.
Ergh, here we go. 😔11 -
I did it. I completely broke windows by plugging in my laptop charger.
The colors in this image have not been distorted at all.
Fuck this OS, royally.8 -
So i started using atom text editor like a month ago. After finding out i can install packages and going on a spree.... I may have broke it. You know you are in for a pickle if the editor starts with more errors than windows vista.
-
someone pushes code and breaks ci.
me: you broke the build
her: (ignoring the explicit error message) it works on my machine, travis is broken
me: it doesn't even work on my machine!
her: I forgot to push one file, sorry.1 -
I've been writing a complex mutation engine that dynamically modifies compiled C++ code. Now there's alot of assembly involved, but I got it to work. I finished off writing the last unit test before it was time to port it all to windows. I switched into a release build, ready to bask in the glory of it all. FUCKING GCC OPTIMIZATIONS BROKE EVERYTHING. I had been doing all my dev in debug mode and now some obscure optimization GCC does in release mode is causing a segfault...somewhere. Just when I thought I was done 😅5

My room fan broke last week, and they were sold out everywhere.
So i build one myself (last rant), but after a while it just blew hot air.
So after some work I have this :) Now it even has RGB :')

So, I recently picked up this book called "The Phoenix Project". I picked it up as I thought it was a project management text book. Turns out its a novel on how this Auto parts company's IT department broke down its silos and embraced DevOps. It's even framed as a thriller - the stakes always get higher! Extremely Exciting!
My Wife, kids and I listen to the audiobook as we drive and do errands every day. My Wife has gotten a very very frank understanding of what my job is like as a result.
I encourage everyone here to get a copy of the book. -
My roommate: why do you look so mad.
Me: stupid program is broke
My roommate: didn't you fix it yesterday?
Me: yes. I broke some thing else
Roommate: oh on a different project?
Me: nope same one.
Roommate: [walks away more confused than when the conversation started]1 -
Me: "Hey, the IP binding on this page is broken"
My boss: "u broke it!"
Bish I haven't touched this project in 24 hours and it was working this morning. You're the only person that has access to it other than me.3 -
My wife's phone started having power button issues. Then it broke completely with spastic random presses, causing the phone to boot loop. It's a 3 year old Nexus 5 so I was mostly concerned with backing things up, not rescuing it.
Cleaning didn't work, tapping the switch didn't work. This hack worked.
Backup complete.9 -
Woke up from my sleep last night because the solution for a long running bug hit me. In a hurry I ran to my work-desk not too far from the bed and flipped open my laptop so hard I broke the screen.
I’ve sent the laptop for repair but my night was so long I didn’t want to get off because previously I only had one problem but then it doubled.2 -
I’m dealing with the worst client I’ve ever had. The project has gone on for way longer than it should, mainly because of them adding a tonne of features to the scope. I should have told them to fuck off but I felt sorry for them because COVID was hitting them hard. So I put in a lot of extra unpaid work to try and get them through it and now they repay me by asking for a refund because they’re now broke?
They blame me for their now being broke when it’s clear they’re broke because of COVID absolutely decimating the restaurant industry. They say that because it took so long to add all those extra unlaid features it’s now my fault?
All this just as I’ve finished the app and am going through the process of releasing it to the stores. I’m probably going to have to take them to court to even get my pay out of them... Thats if they even have money to pay now.
I’ve spent all year trying to get this app out the door only for them to turn around and start abusing me on the phone when things start going down hill for them.
This whole project has been a complete waste of time when I could have been focusing on clients that don’t treat me like shit.4 -
Wrote myself a flight stability controller for a drone I built - used an ultrasonic sensor for altitude so it should've maintained a constant altitude, but I had the throttle increments too high...
Hooked up the battery - off it fucked, hit the ceiling, bounced off a wall, and broke 2 props before I could grab it and yank the battery off.
Protip - if you're building a drone, tie it to a heavy fucking rock for your first flight test!8 -
Four engineers and a broke down car
One day, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, chemical engineer, and computer engineer were driving down the street in the same car when it broke down.
The mechanical engineer said, “I think a rod broke”.
The chemical engineer said, “The way it sputtered at the end, I think it's not getting enough gas”.
The electrical engineer said, “I think there was a spark and something's wrong with the electrical system”.
All three turned to the computer engineer and said, “What do you think?”
To which, the computer engineer replied, “I think we should all get out and then get back in”.3 -
I was messing with my Ubuntu setup, and somehow, I broke it
Since I didn't have a recent backup, I decided to switch to Manjaro
I'm in love16 -
A few years ago, a fellow programmer called me to teach him how to use git blame to find out who wrote that piece of code that broke the monetary ecosystem in this game. He was pretty upset about it because they blamed him about it. I gladly helped him just to see my own name there. Sad story.1

First week in the job and I was told to update an intranet page. Opened it in notepad, made the change and saved it.
Turned out it was a SharePoint site and saving it in notepad broke all the links and turned it into a static page. Even worse, it was the homepage of the intranet.
I blame lack of training and, in hindsight, how awful SharePoint is.
Anyway, at least we successfully tested the backup process...1 -
Gaming on Windows vs Linux:
Windows:
After installing windows, and downloading Minecraft, I was able to run it at a solid 60fps while stretched across 3 monitors
Linux:
After installing, and spending many, many hours trying to set it up to detect more than 1 monitor, I admitted defeat and decided to play on just one. This monitor was also set at a weird resolution, which I briefly fixed, but then broke again immediately. I downloaded Minecraft and after running it, I was able to get a somewhat solid 7fps (10 if I was lucky).
On the bright side, it was able to run a terminal based game just fine on linux.34 -
Sent email to my parents this morning telling them to contact me by email since the Pie update broke my One Plus 6 (when I tried to reroot it but got a bootloop and restoring from TWRP screwed it up even more somehow) so restoring it.
First response from my dad: you can use my spare S9...
Yes he has a spare because he got it in a 2 for 1 deal... but I'm thinking uhhh..... It's not like I physically dropped the phone and cracked the screen... (like he did to his late 2 phones)... I'm 99% sure I can restore somehow... Like I did last time (a few months ago)7 -
There. I fixed the bug. Tested every way possible 10 times and it won’t break. I’m awesome.
Tells a tester I have a phone with the new app-version installed for testing on my desk when he has time.
He just... came to my room. I gave him the phone. He looks at it, does SOMETHING and just ”Ya man, I broke it”.... whaaaat O.o2 -
“Dear Manager, the reason I didn’t complete my sprint task today was that while I was nursing my fiancé’s COVID vaccine severe side effects, said fiancé’s Chinese roommate put a jar of some fermented product called “Golden Smell” in a precarious place from which I broke it, causing a veritable golden shower of glass shards and odors to permeate the workspace. If you don’t hear from me by standup, tell my mom i’m sorry."4

I find a poor tester copy/pasting data from the test environment to the live one, as he accidentally broke it. I ask the DBA, " why isn't syncing SQL records part of the deployment pipeline?"
"You're front end. This is my job. Go do your job."
"... but it's an easy query, and you're exposing us to human error."
"You need to go sit down."1 -
Current lappy got about 4GB RAM and not enough cores. I can't even run krita without it slowing down more the more I work on a file.
It would be frustrating if only I wasn't so depressed.
So yeah, due to being broke and lack of nerves, I'm gonna completely stop working on the comic for now.22 -
Sooooooo since a few days im feeling more and more depressed.
There are some things that might cause it :
- school
-My last frienhship broke (not like i care about sociality. lol)
-my parents being so strict.
What can i do except for going through this, eyes shut?
I alceady had a depression i dont wanna get back there :/51 -
One day, I was waiting for a friend to install windows... after 2h he just says: ah, I'll just take it home and wait it out there!
So, he put his laptop in his bag (btw the usb stick was sticking out) and left it there.
Just as he stepped away from the bag, the bag just decided to fall down and exactly on the usb... and ofc it broke down...
The face he made I'll never forget.1 -
We were running an obfuscator as part of our build pipeline, but also were not. I discovered we had disabled every rule, and after asking around it turns out that the obfuscator broke the app (because of reflection and things I won't go into).
So I turned it off.
An hour later the CTO came to me and said to put it back. "We have to obfuscate, put it back."
"But... it wasn't doing anything, other than slowing the build down."
"I don't care, we HAVE to run obfuscation. It's in our contract with the client."

Update to my "I broke prod" rant:
- I managed to unfuck it on the same evening.
- Worked fine for one day
- Crashed today morning
- Can't fix it because I had surgery yesterday and am on sick leave currently
=> Probably gonna result in me VPNing into the comp network and RDPing into the prod instance to analyse the failure
Yep, ladies and gents, more open heart surgery on the menu!11 -
I just made my own implementation of a scraper for NASA's Pic of the Day. It should have automagically changed my wallpaper at 4 AM to the new pic of the day.
Today's "pic of the day" is a video. It broke my shit.... So much for the excitement of seeing my automation work.4 -
Finished my on call rotation. Coworker is still on a call for 10 hours. She's not on call. I might be getting on this call. For the sake of the idiots who didn't listen and broke it worse, I really hope I don't have to take over for her. I might get fired tonight...5

It was the first time I worked on a big project with a big team, I looked at the given code and copied their code style.
I finished very fast and everything was working fine, was really proud of myself. I'd like to add some logging though.
Programm failed it was heavily async and parallel so 2 days of debugging had past the whole team was on board nobody knew what went wrong there.
As I stared into the darkness of my code I suddenly saw what went wrong 😂
As I adopted no curly braces style of the Team for
If (condition)
Justine();
And I added logging above without braces everything broke 😂 it was indented properly so as a heavily python user everything looked fine2 -
I have this reserve phone. My previous phone broke and I needed a cheap replacement till next February.
First thing I did is download DevRant.
Since I play BF1 I also wanted to download the companion app.
It appears that I ran out of space and my phone asks me if I want to remove DevRant to free some space....
Guess I'll use the companion on the web then. -
My fucking work challenges:
1. "Talk to this thing over the internet" what language does it speak? Fuck knows
2. "Make sure all the files are correct in the server" Our server plan only allows 3 requests per second, and someone is pinging it. Can't do shit.
3. "Shit broke!" You broke it. It was working fine. In fact, all our problems stem from that 1 thing you broke!
4. "Stay here all night" The hallway to the bathroom's door is locked. I can go to my workstation but have to go outside to get to the bathroom!
Fuck, its like you don't want me to succeed -
I got a project to "refactor" some shitty site. It was written in nativ php. The guy who wrote this is a moron.
The site is so unsecure that my dog could broke into it while barking at cats.
It's sooo unreadable and illogical.
Every time i look at the code i get sadder and sadder. And now i understand why so many people hate php..
**Jump in time**
After i planned the new logic. My boss told me i can't do any of this. Because they only need a new user lever..
Now i just stare at this pile of horse sh*t and rant about it.4 -
So someone posted their btc wallet details (system automated message through a custom tool) to a paste in alternative.
Was the login for an ssh. Wont confirm or deny ssh-ing into it, but another guy who saw the same thing messaged me, sent a screenshot. Account had 127k usd worth of btc in it.
Called the radio station it belonged to and gave them a heads up. Probably should reported it as well but people already seen it so it'll get taken down soon enough.
Here I am broke, busting my ass and reality throws this in my lap. But I ain't never been no god damn thief. Hope the radio station it belongs to doesnt get robbed by someone less honest though.
Honesty is probably half the reason I've spent half my life broke trying to find or make opportunities.
And frankly I've heard real horror stories of good faith reports (whitehat style pentesting, etc) and the people that report it get fucked hard by authorities. What can you do though.
Enough navel gazing though.
What the fuck is wrong with the people who build these sort of account reset tools anyway?12 -
Just got the Oreo 8.0 update for my OnePlus 5T. Yay!
But it broke something, so now I can't debug my app with Xamarin... 😐
Luckily there's already a bugreport on their bugzilla! It seems like it's been fixed. Just need to update Visual Studio. Guess I'm lucky after all. 😁
...
The problem is still there... 😡
Don't know what to do now... 😕5 -
Microsoft owns github
Microsoft owns windows
Microsoft owns powershell
Why then, why exactly, is it so fucking hard to get ssh private keys for github, up and running on windows powershell.
I tried to change permissions on files but then it broke the git-bash implementation 😭.
Fuck it !! 😭😭9 -
Today I chmodded -R 777 /
It started blurting out permission denieds on my /proc/ dir and i aborted after staring at it for a sec. It was hella scary, almost broke a server at work. But it still works and ll / only shows 6 green dirs. *Awkward laugh* 🙄1 -

Got one of these today, pretty cool in my experience. I do not have any experience at all with sdr's.
I taught I broke it for a good 30 min thinking 350 € down the drain, turns out i accidentally set the antenna gain to 0 (damn ui designer)3 -
Terminator's broadcast feature is nice.
However, it's fragile as crap, and oftentimes sends duplicate characters, or adds garbage.
Quite awhile ago I posted a PSA on how to fix it (by killing ibus) but now it's broken for me again. And due to just how it broke, I've given up on fixing it. Instead of broadcasting one or two duplicate characters like before, it now hangs for many seconds because it's broadcasting THREE BLOODY MEGABYTES WORTH OF DUPLICATES with every keystroke.
Like, seriously?
How do you fail that hard?2 -
If finally happened. My cats broke me down.
After years of spotty internet, in which I couldn't resolve websites, to which the solution always was to reach down and push the RJ45 jack with the broken off clip that connects my router to my pihole back in, because my cats pulled it out once again.
They made me do. They finally made me do it. After all those years. Today, my cat pulled it out like ten times in a row... So I finally did it. I walked over in the other room, grabbed a new cable and plugged that one it.
Try that again, cat. I dare you. Try it again!1 -
The story of how I got my new job (I will start in december) even though it is not a dev related one:
I was about to reduce my work hours, because my wife was getting a really good job. We couldn't both work full-time, because our son is in kindergarten. Then she broke her ankle and the job was gone. Right at this point I was offered a job at a friends company. I knew him by being an intern in his company.
Things always go well in the end.1 -
My old boss used to deploy sometimes at the last second. I was about to walk out of the office (friday at around 5:30pm) when he said "Oh wait i wanted to deploy this website you've created" Before i could argue he deployed the website and ofcourse it broke in production..
This caused me to stay for another hour and a half in order to fix it...2 -
This was the best hack when I was 11. My computer had a too small fan that was always on max speed, and thus really loud. To overcome this issue I wrapped a thick blanket around the entire computer case. A week later it broke down due to the obvious heating problem, and when it came back from service the repair technician just looked at me saying "Someone has had this computer fucked up intentionally, everything is melted from within. What have you done to it?!" Me being the piece of shit that I was just denied and got a brand new PC for free, nobody ever knew..
-
//Worst day ever.
Everything just broke today. I'm making an app for a website. Of course the site is down and it may not get back up, rendering my work useless.
I wanted to play a game this morning to relax...aaand servers down.
Later I updated the amd drivers on my laptop and now everything is just so slow that I can't use it so I'll be reinstaling windows tomorrow.
And stupid me I thought I could release the app this week.4 -
Today my phone screen broke!
Need to fix it..
But I realized that using a LeEco phone, my company's already too broke to fix it!2 -
My dad was an IT and as a kid when our NES broke and I couldn't play Mario he showed me F-22 lightning (an aerial combat game) and I thought the missiles were fireworks. I always called it the airplanes and fireworks game. Good memories.
-
I just broke 2 phones in two days... believe it or not... Both screens cracked and no swipe functionality survived...
I miss my fucking Nokia Lumia 930... that motherfucker was almost fully destroyed, screen cracked as shit, I could actually hold the screen on one hand and the rest of the phone on the other and it was still fucking working...
Needless to say, I'm going to Amazon and I'm getting a new Nokia phone, fuck LG, fuck Sony.2 -
God I love being able to use MathJax on GitHub, despite it being quite a pain to get it perfect.
https://github.com/OpenlyEducated/...
( Manually adjusted the spacing for readability~ )
( Still needs color though.. )
Also the bug that broke all inline mathjax for a week wasn't exactly helpful..1 -
I just broke out of merge-hell.... It was a mere 2 and a half hours... But my migraine says it was eternity.... 😶
-
Lead: how long do you think it would take to fix the bug?
Programmer: 20 mins with a testing
**Lead an hour later**
Lead: I don't see PR for the fix
Programmer: the fix broke all the unit tests so I am fixing them now. -
Got ncmpcpp/cava/mpd working! (if you're wondering why it's ubuntu, just read a few rants ago :'^> ) and loving it. i gues i'll just open this up for people to post rices or any sort of pretty config. i still shill arch, just not if you like steam and have an nvidia graphics card! i'm in school and i don't really have time to sit down and learn what i broke and how to fix it, even if its a minor issue.8
-
Buying a motherboard variant without WiFi to save 100€ is the worst financial decision ever...
Here I am, after spending over 300€ in USB adapters first, then PCIe boards, buying another one because it broke again...
The alternative is to buy a new motherboard (gen 4 in 2023?!) or change the whole system... two even worse financial options.14 -
Watched an action hack movie
Then designed a scenario to sniff around a bank and get the encrypted key and finally extract the key and omg!
I've broke into the bank !!!
But seriously, is it worth trying?
I'm not going to do any thing stupid like even taking a dollar , but is it just the way I thought it is?
Will anything unexpected happen?16 -
Computers fear my devaura. Everytime I get called to fix something it magically starts working when I enter the room. 5 Minutes after I leave it broke again.
Repeat like while(true)3 -
I downloaded somebody's GitHub code to use for a project. It had a bug that broke functionality, so I fixed it and started running it to gather data. Then it stopped working for a different reason. I rechecked out the code fresh, same (second) issue occurred. It was a second bug, that once I fixed it, everything worked. But I didn't need to fix it the first time! There weren't any commits in the last two months! I blame ghosts.
-
After realizing I had a problem, I finally broke down and called the tinnitus hotline.
It just kept ringing and ringing.6 -
I struggled to find the interview location as the company as they were using another companies offices. As I sit down, sweating, feeling rushed for barely making it on time the interviewer says: "Tell us a joke"
I should have got up and walked out, but since I was there already I pulled this one out:
One day, a mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, chemical engineer, and computer engineer were driving down the street in the same car when it broke down.
The mechanical engineer said, I think a rod broke.
The chemical engineer said, The way it sputtered at the end, I think it's not getting enough gas.
The electrical engineer said, I think there was a spark and something's wrong with the electrical system.
All three turned to the computer engineer and asked, What do you think?
The computer engineer said, I think we should all get out and then get back in.4 -
I just broke the software I am working in and I don't know how. Like seriously. I didn't change anything. It just stopped throwing the error I am supposed to be fixing and started throwing a different one. I blame ghosts.7
-
I've just come to realize that in all the time I ran Netdata on my servers, it was nightly releases, automatically updated too.. that somehow never really broke. Not even minor issues.
I really like that... Moving fast doesn't always have to imply breaking things. I wonder how they're doing it.2 -
(3 days on the project)
Colleague: Ah I finally improved something in this sorry excuse for an app these interns built.
Thought I broke it there for a minute, but the homescreen is back to showing 180 entries.
Me: Current released app only shows 1 entry.
Colleague: FFFFUUUCCCCKKKKK!!!!!! -
Deployment can be a reason for heartache...
I deployed a website yesterday and it was a damn hustle. After changing into goodmode and typing random stuff into the console, I broke another of my websites on the same server.
Now I had two sites to deploy / repair. Damn.
After a few hours I managed to make both work. But damn, that adrenaline rush that gave me. Fuck!3 -
Colleague: I cant install windows on our playcomputer. you broke it.
<Me walks to the computer, he looks away>
<silently deletes the debian entry in the nvram>
<installs windows, without an problems>
Me: So, where is the Problem?
Colleague<slightly angry>: I made it exact like you!
Me: o_O1 -
My killer PR:
I made a small feature and it was to be merged in my senior's branch.
So I made it, resolved all the conflicts and when it got merged it broke my senior's branch.
This is nothing new and it happens, so me and him sat down and got it working. After two days, his branch got merged and broke it's parent 😂, after investigation my code was the reason, got fixed and merged.
Same thing happened 3 more times, and every time my code was the culprit.
Now for staging we thoroughly tested everything and deployed it, after running for 2 hours the piece of shit broke again 😂😂😂.
A meeting was arranged for scolding the team, and after the meeting the architect comes to me and say "how did you manage to fuck things on so many levels, literally?". I handled it like a pro with an awkward laugh.
We exhaustively checked it for production. Deployed, it did not broke, we were happy. After a month of successful run, I just joked about the above incident while we were working on next release on morning coffee. That cursed thing broke on the same evening. I was like 😮2 -
I fucking hate when someone says something broke the internet! Is it fucking down? Can I fucking play my games? Read my fucking email?
If so, the pictures of Kim's ass, or Nicki's assumed sex tape didn't break the fucking internet!
I learned about this supposed breakage after the fact, from news outlets talking about how is broke!2 -
Slack's latest update just broke the darkify hack. It's 2019, right? It is unbelievable that there is no built-in dark mode for Linux, Mac, or even windows. I mean, they are aware of dark mode. It is available on mobile without trouble. Get it together, slack!11
-
I had rough week last week. Accidentally deployed dev code to production, soon found out there was no production version of code to do a redeploy. Deployed another app to production, it was working fine then another Dev changed a data type in the database from bool to nullable Boolean which broke some Linq queries. Looked like I deployed crap code. 3rd week with company.
-
Fuck my life!!! Fuck it right hard!!! My fucking compiler (the one I code) fucking broke down, and i have to put it to competition it two weeks... Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck: obviously Iost backup and gitHub doesnt seem like wanting to give me that version back... Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck duck!!!!5
-
This week, they tested my backend and all hell broke lose ON THEIR SIDE. We had an emergency phone call and I proofed that it was not my fault which they even acknowledged.
Today, was a good day.1 -
A friend mine just told me that he broke his phone's screen, and if I know of any places to fix it. I asked him how much damage it had, he said that he'd send me a screenshot...1
-
Why do tech impaired people always break their tech and they have "no idea" how it broke...
Seriously? What did you do? You know what you were doing? Were you touching random setting again? For fuck sakes just tell me. You've fucking it up 3 times this week already it's not like I don't know your an incompetent prick.4 -
As if it‘s not shit enough that I have internet with the speed 1.2 Mbits, now something broke with the connection and the internet disconnects like 5 times per minute the whole day.
And now I need to wait for some technician to come and check (and hopefully fix) what‘s wrong. And I hope it won‘t take him days to do that. I need the internet now! 😣9 -
The first job I had, asked me to build a simple CRUD functionality in CodeIgniter (It was popular in 2017).
I wasn't able to understand the framework and its ins and outs.
(I only knew Core PHP at that point).
It took me 3 days to finish the task and I got yelled at by the team leader because of it and I almost broke down crying. At that point I was convinced that web development career isn't for me.4 -
Hahah the other day I broke the bracket key on my keybord from pressing it while coding and had to buy a new one.
Everyone asked me how I broke the 0 key before the E.4 -
All I wanted to do was to create a quick cordova/phonegap app that uses external plugins - so I can't just preview it.
I ended up spending countless hours debugging why shit doesn't work through --log --verbose --debug, trying to avoid to install the monstrosity that is android studio and finally broke and installed it, fuck this shit.

Another post had to go for this. "I feel that's a lie [attached picture]".1 -
Replaced battery in my phone but during the process I broke cable to front camera.
Looks like it’s time to also replace front camera.
I am impressed it works without it.5 -
In a meeting, we made some pretty major adjustments to a dev server. We broke it. Under pressure, I cracked and I randomly forgot the syntax for a sql update statement that might’ve at least got it back semi-online. To be fair, it’s been several years since I’ve needed any sql. Thank goodness I grabbed a snapshot as soon as I realized things were about to get edited. Saved. 😁2
-
Follow up to the follow up rant: ubuntu broke.
I tried searching for my git client I had installed: not found.
: Git status
Command not found (even though I’d used it less than an hour earlier)
*restart to see if that fixes it*
My laptop: STEP RIGHT UP STEP RIGHT UP LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, TAKE A LOOK AT THIS WONDERFUL TTY LOGIN SCREEN WITH NO GUI WHATSOEVER. THANK YOU THANK YOU VERY MUCH.4 -
I was happy because I broke 600 points on StackOverflow. Then I saw the post about the guy that reached 1 million and it killed my self confidence2
-
I always love getting yelled at by a client about a feature that they “use everyday” and critical to their business is just not working. Go back and look... it appears that it broke a while ago (in this case a couple months).
It’s my fault, but I do start to question other blanket statements they make. -
Worst experience?
Fourth semester. Programming project.
We were 4 persons, I did almost all the work (including fixing the stuff they broke) but that's not the point.
One of them somehow killed our git repo at least once per weak. It was really annoying, because I had to fix it.
Also he named *all* of his commits 'Pfuschpush' (Pfusch is German for botch). And the code had exactly this quality. I often had to rewrite everything he did (or simply revert the commit).1 -
Biggest one is dealing with idiots who break everything. Can’t space anything properly. Oh you needed that function? I got rid of it because it broke my code, and it was easier. Oh yes, just perfect, get rid of a core fucking function you retard that multiple parts of the code rely on. (Luckily it wasn’t pushed to the main, otherwise everything would’ve broken...)
Another one is finishing a damn project, I have like 20 by now... all in different languages that I want to learn. Time comes to work on it? Oh wait, let’s make this because it’s more fun! Just adding more projects to my graveyard. -
My life! What has it come to ?
(I'm primarily backend but I'm broke so I can't hire the frontend devs)3 -
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, read this: https://www.devrant.io/rants/805543 )
I have good news!
Finally, my PC is back alive :'D
I took it to where I first bought it, and...
Apparently the reason why it broke was the AC adapter, as they replaced it with a new one... (the PC was still in warranty)
So now I can finally begin to program again and (hopefully) tell you some dev-related rants! So I can actually feel an active part of this community, haha ♡4 -
So, uh... Linux 3DS is going well. It finally boots, turns out it's the SD/MMC driver's issue, not my 3DS dying (phew), but now I have to actually FIX the driver. I thought I fixed it, but no, no, I just entirely broke it so now it doesn't even attempt to load. Fuck me... (These changes are local for now.)
Anyone wanna help?
https://github.com/ParzivalWolfram/...3 -
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it
I gave it to you straight don't mix it"...
Since when did DMX take on Programming?1 -
So, I spent the last two days hunting down a bug about some of the static assets not getting versioned.
It turned out to be a mistake by some newbie missing a quote in html. The html parser responsible for versioning the assets broke once it ran into that bad html.
Somehow, I don’t feel satisfied. I guess I shouldn’t hope for big reasons for seemingly big problems. -
So the other day my car broke down and since the shop wanted a lot of money I asked a friend of mine who knowns his way around cars for help.
Just when we finished repairing it I was like "whenever the Zombie apocalypse starts you'll be really useful, me instead won't be since no one might need computers anymore" . His response was epic:
"Nah, you will simply build a terminator with your computer skills and it will kill all Zombies!"
Now I am actually looming forward to the Zombie apocalypse!
TL;DR: us geeks will build terminators in case of zombies!3 -
Since the last Windows Update broke my wife's laptop (the WiFi driver doesn't woro anymore) she's moving to Linux. I hope it goes well since she is a non-techi. I kinda am excited.
The biggest problem will be the lack of Adobe Illustrator. 😕14 -
Run the tests before you commit, even if it was just a minor modification.
(Yep, I broke most of the tests by changing only a couple of lines. Lesson learned.)1 -
So a while back I got a new Mac book pro for work, and it was nice for a while, until the keyboard broke, so I gave it to apple so that they would 'repair' it, and although, they gave me a new keyboard, the keys were still garbage, and a while later broke again... and this is the second time that I've had to spend a week without a computer because of shitty butterfly keys... 😢😢😢2
-
I broke the interwebs XD XD XD
nepripojené - disconnected
The DHCP does not see my computer, my computer says it is disconnected and I am still able to browse the internet perfectly fine :D3 -
Fucking hate working with dotnet. Just spent half an hour fixing the most fucked up bug.
So I installed a nuget package on my computer, tested everything, it worked, and pushed. My classmates then pulled it to their pc, and holy hell broke loose.
Everything was red, it couldn't even import System! By a turn of luck, I looked in the .csproj file, and saw that it had made an absolute path to the nuget package on my computer. Well no fucking wonder it only worked on mine then!
And here's the weird thing: it only did it now, it hasn't done it with the other packages we've imported3 -
being a dumbass and ran a blocking call then it broke and i can't kill it with ^C :/
killed it later with htop lol im so fucking dumb
also hi first post here6 -
So me being illiterate fuck in C++ and shit, I just broke a build of one of the biggest Autodesk's softwares for hundreds of people around the world and didn't realize it until around a day later (now) after feeling weird about those tens of new mails..
Weeeell, apparently 96.0 isn't float, heh:))))
Now everyone has seen my shit code and wants me to rewrite it using some of their classes, hihihi
Feel ashamed af.... sorry guys1 -
The other day, I accidentally broke the R key on my laptop keyboard. The mechanism still works, but the keycap no longer locks in
I go to buy a replacement, since it's really messing with my typing flow, and I find out it costs 7 USD per keycap, plus shipping. That means that to replace every key on my keyboard, it would cost me about $680!!
I only paid about $500 for the ENTIRE FUCKING LAPTOP AND YOU'RE GONNA CHARGE ME $7 FOR A SINGLE FUCKING KEY!!! FUCK YOU ASUS!!!4 -
I was just wondering why the flying fuck OxyPlot was rendering an unknown node on my chart for monday when I only queued my sql db for a single Tuesday.
Noticed it was an auto generated node, which had the right time, status, everything.
I looked up my code and found out that the date somehow bugged out, and if c# isn't sure what to do with an empty date it initializes a date on 1.1.0001
And what do you know. Appearantly thats a Monday.
I broke my head way harder over this than I should have, assuming the worst possible bugs in the render engine. fml -
Whiteboard 😂
But seriously Jetbrains I am IntelliJ ultimate user for 6 years or something - I like their debugger expression watch and multiline expression evaluation.
Also like their git integration, the fact that you can only mark some lines in file to commit.
I am used to their keyboard shortcuts.
I like there is vscode cause it made my IntelliJ work better.
Competition is always good.
Maybe I switch to vscode but only if I’m broke and can’t afford IntelliJ. -
i once asked chatgpt if i was a good person and it used what little input i had given to reason that i am.
i was having a really shit month and broke down in tears.
i was so ashamed of being vulnerable that i chose to be comforted by lines of code over a human. even now, i can only post this this because i’m functionally anonymous on here.
i don’t know where i was going with this. tell your homies you’re proud of them. you’ll probably make their day.3 -
Installing the nvidia drivers on my linux machine is the bigges nightmare I've come across sofar. As soon as I have installed it and reboot, blackscreen and literally no way around it. Starting the desktop, nah stuck in a crashloop. Installing different driver, same issue. Using diffrent distro, that shit wont even boot properly. Uninstalling the driver seems to fix it but whats the point of running only on third gen i5 graphics. Shit cant even handle 1080p yt properly. And there are ppl saying if it aint broke dont fix it. FFS I DESPISE MAKING COMPROMISES WHEN I FUCKING KNOW IT CAN WORK BUT ATM IT IS NOT IN THE FREAKING MOOD TO DO SO!4
-
First I didn't switch to the 4.18 kernel because it breaks thousands of gnome extensions and customization, now newest gnome broke it all too and downgrade caused gnome to just blackscreen, time to re-install10
-
Listen dude I get it, you've been in more of a Systems Admin role for a long time, you haven't really worked on a devlike team.
I can be patient I can be understanding. But when you break the build you need to fix it.
Yes I know you didn't change any of the files that are now failing, but you the pipeline is no longer deploying and so we can't fix anything.
Okay dude we are being prevented from deploying because you broke the build, you need to fix it. It's stopping everyone else.
DUDE FIX THE FLIPPING BUILD EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR YOU TO FIX THAT!
Seriously I know we should be patient with people learning new things, but some days it is difficult.5 -
Boss while working at a computer repair shop, he was a chill guy and great guy to talk to. Didn't mind if I came in a little late and regularly let me leave early.
Regularly got fun stories like how someone's cd drive broke because they thought it was a bagle holder.4 -
Things you should not say on your last day of work:
If I broke it, I think it would be pretty obvious. -
Haha ! Can't balive i fanally broke this chain and joined a group for statistics final project !
It was soooo difficult but i did it 😎2 -
Let me check Slack
Just before I go to bed
Just in case — OH NO
It’s not what you think
It isn’t like I broke prod

College broke my school VM by "accidentally" pushing a policy to just me that disables being able to start anything after logging in (no DWM or Explorer, either, so just login, then infinite abyss.) Fine, nothing I can't fix, i got around shit like this in middle school. Reboot... can't get to the school's webpage. No DNS...?
No.
Windows disabled all the network services. Why? Defender didn't start, is why. Why not? School broke it. Goddammit. Gotta fix that.
There, are we ready now? NO, OFFICE ATE SHIT. FUCK, LEMME REBOOT AGAIN...
How about now? Everything works? Cool, let's get some work done. Download assignment, and... file's busted. Redownload? Nope. One more try? Nothing.
I am going to flip my shit I swear to fuck -
Lovely... About a week ago I moved my manjaro installation from bios to UEFI.
I ran a system update last night... and, well, my boot broke, cause mkinitcpio failed to build my initramfs. I was up till twelve cause now my system wouldn't mount a fat32 partition, so till I had my esp mounted and finaly fixed, it was 12. (And I wanted to go to sleep early that night)1 -
Right after breaking my camera lens, my brother again broke my precious favorite mouse. I don't know what to do about it. After all, he is my brother.7

So we thought we did something wrong and caused our AdX revenue to plunge. But after 'fixing' yesterday, we broke it further. Then we realised there were alot of illogical numbers on AdX report. We are suddenly making 1/3 of our ad revenue! I am running out of ideas. Anyone else is facing same issue?
-
I broke my code,
got distracted fixing it,
annnnd accidentally flaked on my friend
fuck
why am I like this
I have such regrets8 -
So I broke my beloved Fedora Dist. instead of doing a little "sudo chmod -R 754 ./" on a development folder, I did it on root folder ( / )
Now, OS crashed, and I'm getting infinite loops when booting.
But I'm not even mad. I'm impressed :o7 -
Yay today my power extender broke!
(the thing that allows you to connect multiple devices to one sockiet, i dont remember the correct term)
That means i need to buy the new one! Because the old one is using rivots it means i cant repair it!
Stupic fucking lead free solder! Why do you even use this shit for connections? It will create those tin wiskers (small wires) that will short shit! This is the reason why my 3 old power extenders failed! And it is propably the reason why it failed as well!1 -
Just met a lonely guy , he was terrified . I asked him what's the issue ? He said .. " My girlfriend told me that she loves gemstones , I bought her one . She broke up with me ! " And I was so confused .. I asked him why ? He said I didn't know she was a developer . I wouldn't dare to gift her a ruby... I know how it feels bruh.2

I feel so fucking proud after finally finishing what i started coding
I delayed so many days and procrastinated because it seemed way too fucking hard to code it
But i sat down and forced myself to do it despite it being hard
Yes i broke my fucking head trying to figure it out but i somehow figured it out
And it is finally fucking done
Fucking good Lord thank you2 -
For anyone following, I broke my E key on my laptop keyboard. I ordered a new one and it should arrive tomorrow. I am going to be able to type else and exeception properly after a really long time!2

Call me a novice, but isn't the point of a user story to be concise, limited in scope and only concerning one purpose? Kind of like a class should only have one responsibility.
This stupid other reviewer developer comes whining at me saying I broke some shit in my user story and that I need to fix it. The weirdest part is that I didn't break anything. I wrote all my tests, they all passed and yep, this guy has the nerve to come and say that I broke other shit. Well genius, if it's OTHER SHIT, then it belongs as a bug in ANOTHER STORY. What the fuck man, seriously.
A few minutes of debugging later, I found out it was someone else who broke some code earlier on a piece that was part of my part of the application.
Why are others so quick to blame? This is unprofessional. OMG I DISCOVERED AN ERROR, YOU'RE PROBABLY THE ONE TO BLAME BECAUSE YOU'RE AN IGNORANT GUY BECAUSE YOUR TITLE IS JUNIOR DEVELOPER!
Right.
Companies like these, people, have bad communication. Bad companies.2 -
Someone please tell me why react sees if(x = y) as valid js. That typo basically broke my app for 3 weeks and I didn't figure it out untill now. It set all my states to the same value. Fuck me 😑19

Personal mini-project from a million years ago which I practically don't maintain anymore, broke. External APIs are being bitches.
Made a fix, but I'm too lazy to push. (I don't think anyone else is using it tbh)

Helped an elderly neighbour to fix his landline connection, since it broke down.
Somewhat an emergency, cause he don't have a mobile phone.
It seems, this got around and another neighbour asked if I could plug in his new printer and install the drivers.
Gosh, RTFM and don't buy hardware you can't handle.
No, I won't fix your computer. -
<rant class="sysadmin">
Fuck you windows, haven't touched my PC in 2 months and I boot it first had to restore basic functions after that a Windows update came that broke everything in Windows, now I'm learning PowerShell to fix my broken windows and to install updates in the hope I get a working installation back. -
A few weeks ago, my phone's lock button broke, I don't wanted to buy a new one but few weeks after, the sound broke too, not only the speaker, everything! When I was trying to play a video without sound my phone crashed...
So I bought me a new phone, and it was fun**info worth !!!
The OnePlus 5t is really amazing 😍 -
I just love antergos, haven't updated in like a month, because wasn't using my laptop as much, booted it up, ~200 package updates, it failed because one file needed to be deleted as per announcements (I now subbed to those) and all updates cleanly went through.
Last time I didn't update a week on arch, it broke ~6 core packages and my dm, never thought I'd be on a pretty much arch release, but without the actual bleeding edge issues. -
Why the FUCK SCALEWAY DOESN'T DELETE MY FUCKING ACCOUNT!
Arrgh. I just want it to be deleted. I clicked delete almost 3 months now. I used their service for 2 months, charged for 4.
Ok, there is the story.
> Be me
> Be broke
> Buy their 3 Euro package
> Use it for 1 month, you know, install npm, vpn and stuff
> Be broke
> You have 0 euros in your account
> Cannot log in to server couse you didn't paid their bill
> Sure, they have right to do that
> Forget about it
> Earn money
> 3 months later, remember it
> Ok, I want to delete it, couse i don't use it anymore
> Remember you used more than 1 month, so pay your debt
> There is 3 issued bills
> Try to delete account
> Wait 1 month
> They didn't deleted your account
> Fuck it, there is the money you want
> Pay all the bills, hope it ends
> Wait 1 week
> Nope
> Open a ticket
> Says it will be deleted in few weeks.

An app I wrote in react native broke. It just checks for new episodes and opens the actual download link so this all the ads. The URL seems to have changed from www to www1.... So the Find/Replace broke.
I don't think I will be using RN though because I can't access all features like root commands, that can be done from Android SDK. And probably easier to access all Android's features?
So should I try to fix the RN code (prolly 1 line) or port the whole project to use Android SDK?11 -

Went from uni to my car to drive back home. Engine doesn't start, And report of low oil level is showing up. Hmmm. I've opened hood and checked oil level. It was empty. First thought. I drove here with no oil so I broke the engine. Great... I bought some oil and refiled it. Still same problem. I've called my insurance company and my mechanic. And then. Brilliant thought evolved. Did I turned off ignition on secret switch today? Yea it was it. Had to call everybody again and cancel my AC request. Gosh, I hate having memory of golden fish...
Also. Hi everybody. my first !rant3 -
Last night's cronjob was the first time I broke everything on the network via my automation. Fixed it before business hours of our clients.
At least I learned my lesson? 😀😁😂🤣😃😃😄😅 -
I just bought a new smartphone, cause i broke the one i had before, and i find it really good for only 140€. It has 4gb RAM and 1,5Ghz 4 cores processor, and an IP68 Shock/Dust/Water protection. The only problems that i have are that as the brand is not really popular (model is Phonemax Rocky 1), there are no recovery/roms or easy ways to root it. Maybe if i have time i'll try to port TWRP and LineageOS, but i'll have to do it myself... :(1

Do you guys worry about your non disclosure agreements at work? I use my personal computer at work so I do my own projects on the same computer as work but it makes me a bit uneasy. We're a broke startup and I'm lucky to have the job so I'm not going to ask for a computer.
Also, are you aware of it when you make rants- trying not to be too specific? Or are you not worried?7 -
Starting up my iPhone 4s to test something
Low battery, I plug it in
It charges, I put it down and let it download an app,
after 5 mins it starts making the sound of unplugging/replugging, something with the cable or the phone is broken, when I was with iphones, these cables were so bad, didn't matter if from Apple or third party
Fucking cables always broke on me
Since Android I never broke a single one, olf micro USB still holding up fine
I guess usb C is even better, but micro serves me a lot better than any fucking apple bullshit cables1 -
Worst architecture: the stack compiler I wrote. I basically just made my own shitty webpack.
The idea was simple: Babel to minified JS, Scss to minified CSS, and HTML to minified HTML. Made in Node JS, of course. (perhaps that’s where I went wrong!)
The thing works... and I use it... but boy is it bad. It even broke on my current project (which is for a client so...) and I’m having to work around my own god damn code.
I really need to revisit it and redo it.1 -
Build a tool two years ago that I used to download anime of a website.
Buggers now broke it by encrypting(?) a URL I need and using obfuscated JS so I can't find what I need D:4 -
So I was smoking next to my Mac, not only it broke the Warranty, but hey... Now I have Mac OS High Sierra

Was using manjaro (based on Arch) and decided to stop being a loser and installed vanilla arch. Also manjaro broke cuz it sucks. I use arch now btw.5

Currently, I refactor some code in a private project at home. Yesterday I ran tests and some things didn't work I thought I already fixed. After I fixed them other things were broke and again errors felt familiar. With every fix and every new error I was more and more sure, I already did exactly the same things before. I thought, maybe it is a Déjà-vu or I dreamed about that.
After two hours, when everything was working again, I realized I did all this two nights before in a branch and totally forgot about it.
I wasn't even drunk -.-' -
RavenDB was by far the worst document storage "solution" I have ever had the displeasure of working with.
- Loading data crashed the service.
- Queries crashed the service.
- Monitoring applications crashed the service.
- It didn't support clustering or HA of any kind.
- Sometimes it just worked for no good reason.
- Often it broke for completely random reasons.11 -
I'm a brand-new employee for my college's IT service. During my training, I was given a briefing on their security system. After something broke, he tapped into an administrative database on his chromebook, then he went to go check something while leaving the chromebook alone with someone he just met for over 30 minutes.2

Oh yeah, something broke my windows install last night and i had to reformat so i got to install it twice after spending hours installing all the other things i need thanks to dsl speeds.

So this morning, I was having problems with Explorer.exe. So I did a sfc /scannow to fix it.
After booting, my PC would not boot. I thought I did something to break it. I kept turning it off and on. I was scared that I broke my computer again.
I plugged out my keyboard. It booted.
Then I realized--it was my stupid broken keyboard being weird again.

I don't like Laravel Livewire and the architectural aspect of it. Every key stroke is a call to the server. The freedom of designing the minute behaviours are taken away. (e.g. border-bottom on a certain div). The maintain ability is not good either. Change one variable name and the whole thing breaks and it's difficult to pinpoint where it broke exactly. And the most of all, it's not beginner friendly.
My chest feels lighter now. Thanks. -
Fellow iPhone users and broke bitches too cheap to get the battery replaced or buy a new phone, I have noticed that I get a lot smoother performance and a more gradual if steeper battery life with apples bullshit process slowing turned off. Now anything below 20% is a flip of a coin if the phone will turn off, but with it on it chews the top end of the battery much faster and seems to die more when idle.
PS don’t use fast chargers.5 -
When my Firefox window is too narrow devRant completely shits all over itself and glitches so hard that rants cannot be scrolled anymore unless I make the window larger and go apeshit on the scrollbar until it fixes itself again.

Learning to troubleshoot issues with vms. Had to break a vm with a script I was given and then fix it. Docs I was given said x error should be in y log. I check the log; nope. Check the other logs for other possible errors mentioned; nope. Turns out something else broke instead and before of the thing I was supposed to break. Rip me

Wrote a new feature for our flagship product in C. Worked perfectly, no issues. I was told to wait before submitting to SVN.
Because my company is a little cheap in engineering, they took my Green Hills license for another dev to use. I wasn't using it, and now can't compile.
Then, a month later, I was asked to submit my feature to the repo, they needed it in done version, do I did. Still not able to recompile to see if other changes broke anything...
As you probably guessed, no one's code complied after pulling from the repo! Big embarrassment. Weeks later I was told that it wasn't my fault in the end... I don't remember how my code impacted it, but man, it was a bad day for this dev.
Never again!1 -
Emotionally painful dev learning experience: My laptop (and only computer I had in the area) broke at the worst possible time during university and the guy fixing it fucked it up meaning it took even longer. Combine this with:
*Stuck having to learn Android Studio in two weeks to make a whole-ass app with a professor who didn't know how to make a Hello World and gave us no resources. Pair project so I had someone depending on me to do my part, meaning a lot of sharing their computer just to be able to use Android Studio.
*Having to work on another solo project by using various public and awfully specced university computers. Said project involved real-time 3D graphics and was running at about a third of the speed it should on every machine.
*Realizing how much I depended on my laptop for entertainment and that I basically had nothing that could help me de-stress and relax at home.
*Not knowing when the laptop's spare parts would arrive or if the repair man would give me bad news and even more delays.
*A very poorly timed issue in my relationship.
I know university can be stressful even though it never really affected me before or since but man, those couple of weeks broke me.1 -
Ugh, tomorrow I have to work again again after 5 weeks vacation so I figured let's update my antergos installation on my work laptop so I can jump right into the current issues. Turns out something broke my installation 5 weeks ago to the point where I can't login into my DE. So here I am attempting to fix it before tomorrow starts, 3 hours in :l

Having an argument about "empty" function in php.
someone told me that we shouldn't use this function because this is deprecated and doesn't work on php 5.3.
He has this opinion because once we took a site live and there few conditions broke. And they were like this " if ( empty($this->input->post())"
While I was trying to tell basically it wasn't empty fault I used it wrong, because the docs says nor its deprecated neither it'll break if we just use variables in it and not functions.
Argument ends up in "not getting any reply" :/ -
I gues devrant android app got an update recently [last week?]? Notifications suddenly started to work. Yayy!
But in-app notifications broke. More often than not either tab in notifs [all, ++, comments, etc.] loads nothing and there's no way to re-fetch data manually. If _all_ breaks I have to browse each category manually to see what's new.
Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing this?
Galaxy s7 edge, stock everything.
P.S. I rarely get to rant about devrant :) -
Ayy. It's time. Someone wants to hire me to make a site for them...
How much do I charge? 😭. They also said they want it as an exclusive design that I can't do for anyone else. It's one of my first proper ones so its basically my baby
But yeah. How much is appropriate?
Do bare in mind that I'm broke af 😂. Suggestions in GBP please6 -
Broke it. It happened once with normal usage, and i managed to reproduce it by switching excessively fast between notifications and the rant icon. :D3

The Jio phone out of India actually looks like a cheap ($10ish dollars) but worthy little option if you just want something to mess around on but don't want to drop $30-40 (plus shipping) on a pi.
Only 4gb storage, 512mb ram, 240x320 screen, dual core 1ghz, just enough to experiment if you're broke.
What do you think? Any indian programmers familiar with the Jio?
I'm not running out to buy it or anything. I stumbled across it and wonder what people's opinions of it are.14 -
Lessons learned:
Dont fuck with firewall rules when intoxicated.
I was on a weekend, my mailserver was acting weird again.
I do my shizzle, git commit, push.... And it broke
And i was too far gone tp notice on time where the forward rules were broken... That made it stop completely
At least it was not an open firewall -

So I work at a monitoring station (yeah not a professional dev yet), so basically our entire day is spent on the phone. Yesterday morning, our phone system broke. Everyone is getting calls from all departments. Even departments they're not in.
As if my job isn't stressful enough as it is, now this fucking thing happens, and whattya know, shit still isn't working today... -
I feel like finding a replacement key for your laptop keyboard is way harder than it needs to be. I broke my 'A' key and after going through three different websites and 20 dollars later I've settled to just replace my 'A' key with my '7' key. 😕2

Through pain, sweat, tears, sickness, blood, and endless confusion between Linux system and windows system configuration, and finally learning the fundamentals of a new language, I have officially broke ground on a new project. Here's to hoping it doesn't end in GitHub hell with the rest

It feels like this year, I haven't been motivated to build my own apps. At most I make a few fixes to plugins that broke due to HTML layout changes but I haven't built any full apps...
Just feels like I don't have anymore problems that annoy me so much I want to solve/automate away...
There is one minor one actually but it's just a redesign/extension of an existing app I wrote awhile back...11 -
So some other dev in team changed something, and it broke the tests that I wrote. Ideally the dev should be responsible for fixing the tests too when I communicated this in the team channel my manager pinged me and asked me to fix it urgently. I'm already on PIP and wth is this? am I suppose to fix these tests too?6

My windows 8.1 computer broke a few years ago, a few months ago, I dug it up and installed Damn Small Linux, after that, Ubuntu. Now, I have Tiny7 (Modded windows 7 designed to be non resource intensive. Basically the Damn Small Linux of the Windows world.) I'll say it now, after Windows XP, Windows 7 is probably the best operating system I've ever had the pleasure of using.

My 7 years old computer broke down :(
Finally I have a good reason for buying a new computer. It will have twice as much RAM, SSD drive will be more than 4 times the size of the old one, processor will be 5 generations newer and the graphic card will have 3 times more video memory.17 -
I pushed some untested changes yesterday to my course team's code repo, and it broke one thing. Let that be a lesson to ALWAYS TEST CHANGES BEFORE PUSHING THEM! > _ <

I was aspired to be a graphic designer back then when I was in primary school, playing with all the fancy Photoshop filters. Then I got sick of static images, move on to Flash (just before it died violently). I self learn the ActionScript by myself and fall in love with programming. Not the usual language to begin with, but it kinda form my basis in OOP concept.
I still have that thick ActionScript 3.0 bible with me. Keeping it so I can always remember the first time I broke my geeky virginity. -
i'm not sure if it had anything to do with this app i'm working on but I broke down and cried when I saw that I forgot to take my laundry out.3

It's Thursday already !
All I've done this week is scrolling on devRant and Reddit, shit !

Nothing like IT you're using actually being competent after you broke something (or more accurately pulling a pin that you didn't realize would blow up in your face).
Was dealing with a issue in the learning management system, decided to check a checkbox, ended up with every student receiving 1000% in the class. Went to our LMS support, said "oops I broke it", and they resolved it in 2 hours, and did what I was hoping for at the end anyways.1 -

Tested the windows linux subsystem. Thought windows did something good by implementing a complete Linux bash. Then I recognized that they just piped it into the win kernel. Lol they broke it again XD
Next steps are removing windows, burn that m2 ssd in some gasoline, throw the ashes in a deep hole next to my old bootcamp 40GB HDD (Mac OS X) and finally setting up a new fresh and clean system which won't get in touch with any Windows forever.

When someone else breaks the development build, and when I ask what happened, it's suggested that *I* should fix it, by "just" doing such-and-such.
Why me? I'm not the one who broke the fuckin thing. Can ppl take responsibility for their own actions please?1 -
I'm not liking docker so far. I assume it gets better later, but I've had a miserable experience using it as part of my dev environment so far. Just now I updated it and it broke my db container, so now I'm looking to either downgrade docker or fix the issue, both beings things that take time away from coding.2

OneNote is just a big pile of shit.
I‘ve been trying for three hours now to share a Notebook (OneNote Desktop to OneNote Desktop).
It just does not work. It used to work. Microsoft broke sharing.
If the other person invites me via Mail or even MS-Account I neither get Notificiations nor an E-Mail with a link nor am I able to select the Notebook somewhere. It‘s. Just. Useless.
OneDrive also sucks.
Microsoft tries to offer solutions for everything and nothing is finished and fully functional. It sucks. People using OneDrive suck. I just want to do my work.1 -
It broke again this morning.... Apparently he didn't finish making the change yesterday... or maybe he realised after I got his server hard with some payback...

Well I used to play games at my Father’s computer, it was an old FPS online game really fun, I played it like everyday when I was 6 yo. Two years later the computer broke and we had to buy a new one, so my father insisted that we buy two computers, one for him to work and one for my own computer and assembled it myself. I thought myself to do it by a book and took me like 2 weeks to figure it out and assemble the whole thing. I love every minute of it.1

yesterday, I just swapped my sim card for some time with another. Placed it back....and voila! I can't enable data connection. I lost all my apn settings. To add to this, neither is it auto fetching the apns, nor i can manually change it! It shows some fucking error "apn settings not available for this user". I have another phone with same android version (lollipop) and everything works smoothly on it. These guys just broke everything after giving an upgrade from kitkat. Auto brightness stops working after a few hours, random reboots.... This is it... bye bye stock rom!

I have 14 days left before uni starts, but my keyboard broke and keys: 'u' 'd' and 'o' send the key twice, which means I'll go fucking insane before I finish writing a simple function and no blowing into the switch with compressed air, no washing it with water and letting it dry for a day helps.

Context:
At work, I code primarily with Java.
I'm a big believer in the mantra, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but I find myself conflicted with that when I can see how much of an improvement it would be to use a different language for some of the simple pieces in our integration.
Question:
When should one start considering other languages for your team? And if you choose other options, how do you do it in such a way where you don't end up building a chimera of an integration?3 -
Totally fuck Prestashop! They can't even make DB properly. Now it is not possible to alter table, because they fucked up 1 default value. GJ, I hope it won't broke if I fix this...

Ah, I have so many memories.
I was lab instructor at the local institute(it was more like tuition) where I had to train students for programming (C, C++, Core Java).
And my debugging skills got enhanced too, It was like I had to just look at the program and I could tell all the errors, it happens to everybody I think because our brain just find patterns un-consciously and it later becomes like one superpower.
No doubt there were a lot of bright students even brighter than me. Actually, that was my starting point where I broke out of my shell and started playing with coding a lot.1 -
My HDD broke last night. Woke up to something making squeaking sounds. It was the HDD. When it broke, my laptop also acted weirdly. My laptop wouldn't even shut down. Let the battery drain, but lost the HDD. Something is broken, internal. Cannot recover the data myself because it no longer rotates. I now have to spend hundreds of dollars to get it to a data recovery company.

Doing some SendGrid integration with suppressions via their API. I changed around a bit of my own code today because what I had before wasn't working well. Something I didn't touch suddenly stopped working. The response body from their one API endpoint no longer matches what their docs say and I swear it did yesterday. So I've been swearing thinking I broke something for the last four hours.4

The fucking LAN port cover broke
The Internet of things tells me you can't fucking replace it (nobody sells this part)
Lan ports aren't important I guess
Make something useless by having part of it covered by flimsy plastic that breaks if you stare at it long enough

I brought my laptop on vacation, but I left my archiso USB drive at home, assuming I wouldn't break anything.
I broke networkmanager. I just added a connection, it worked flawlessly, but for some reason it is now a reason to stop booting. It enters emergency mode, but I can't type anything... Possibly because it doesn't have read/write access or something idk.
But how on Earth would this break my system??? I'm beginning to understand why some people dislike systemd sometimes...

I would love to use linux/ubuntu and I set up a dual boot for my laptop, but it just freezes on me every 10-15 minutes. Afterwards I have to force shutdown and it's really frustrating. Windows works without freezing btw ;)3 -
So, I did Ubuntu 18.04 updates today. Apparently doing so broke the sound on my computer. 18.04 is not new. It has been working fine for over 3 years and none of the other updates broke the sound. How do we get to 2022 with Linux being over 20 years old and it fucking breaks the sound on an update? I don't even see shit like this in Windows 10 any more.8

when programming fails.
when I updated the firmware on this piece, something went wrong and the device broke.
Google'd and learned that the only way to unbrick is to break the other side open and remove a non-removable battery, to reset. else it will stay bricked forever -
So a few months ago a broke screen of my laptop, currently I quite broke so I can't change screen and for some time I was using TV as screen, but ofc. Windows have to crash or do similar shit and know it doesn't send signal via HDMI, probably it's showing some info, but signal is only send when it boots windows or something.
So my girlfriend give me her old laptop (4gb RAM and I3 processor, bit touchscreen :/) and windows aren't updated for quite a long (it was still windows 8) and I tried to update it. Ofc it has to be problem, DISM doesn't work, downloading iso doesn't work, fml. I guessed I have to live with that, but later disc usage starts to be around 100% and freeze for few minutes (shitty Win2k PC at uni was more responding). Then I try to refresh windows, DISM starts working, updates semi-working. I left with 21 updates with error and there starts conversation:
Me: install 21 updates
Win: kk. Or actually no
Me: please
Win: the best what I could do is 8.
Me: it's something
Win: actually fuck it, only 4
Me: I'm done *typing Manjaro xfce*
So now I have dual boot with Manjaro which use 40% ram with Firefox open, when windows has 30% alone. I can't play anyway and DF is on Linux so fuck Windows.
I am noob when it comes to Linux and everything actually, but it makes me want to learn and improve.16 -
I'm kinda looking for a new phone, should be super cheap (so a used one would do), I wanna modify it to be secure (proper encryption, VPN, etc.), very good battery time and not very big (more like 4"). I have been looking at the Lenovo P2 a lot, but I'm afraid my current phone will die before I have enough money for that one (I'm a broke trainee yay).
So what do y'all have or can recommend?3 -
So, I broke the lab environment friday afternoon. My boss said no to worry about it until this morning. Today he sends out an email saying we need the lab for a demo today. It is a good thing i only broke one of the labs...the lab only I am using. So now im sitting here waiting fir the lab to be fixed because I cant work without it.

Started a new project for .NET core. Spent the last 2 hours creating a new solution and trying to "make a great solution structure this time"...
Ended up with the same project structure of my previous projects.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it I suppose. -
Today my son broke an ankle during soccer practice, told him to walk it off, fucking wimp. My wife called me insensitive, but if he was never aware of the fact he truly broke it, we would've been fine and saved some money.
Gratefully I finished my project for work and now I'm getting a promotion!!! It can only go up from here.4 -
The build broke right before code review with the Lead. It didn't just break in one place, oh no, that would be too simple. It broke everywhere, right down to the core mechanic. I spent the next 3 hours trying to find out why it broke, checking everything involved in this part of the system. It was a freaking Initialization call placed inside a conditional statement instead of outside.

Rest In Peace my Hermes E2 mechanical keyboard. I have been using it for about 4 year and today the shift key on the left side of the keyboard broke.
I think the shift key is physically broken since I already try to clean the keyboard but it isn't working anymore.
The keyboard should still be workable for normal user but programming with that keyboard is a hell.
You only notice how much left shift key is important for programming when you try to program with alternative (right shift key)15 -

I try to delete a partition from my sundisk Pendrive using GParted but when I do this I got the error that is shown in the image.
And If I try to use "fdisk" which run `sudo fdisk /dev/sda` following command it gives me ```welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.34).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.
fdisk: cannot open /dev/sda: Read-only file system```
following error does that mean my pendrive permanently broke can anybody help me!9 -
Playing NFS (it was the version which had the McClaren car), few other games and watching some movies (CD player) It wasn't my computer though. It was my cousin's and I used it while he was working. I think I broke it couple of times (windows 95) to get the BSOD.
I bought my own computer only when I started working. My family couldn't afford one before that. Luckily I had good friends in college who let me use theirs for course work.
