Coworker in my team recently said to boss:
"Thanks, this conversation with you has taught me so much about single-threaded blocking I/O"
Some random PR comments from our company's repository:
"Are you insured? I hope you are insured"
"Learning git is not that difficult. You only need one command: git reset --hard"
*Link to amazon for dog poop bags*
"Please clean up your shit, before I step in it"
"Have you thought about a career in sales? At least there you might sell your bullshit"2 -
Interviewer: Do you know about SQL injection?
Student: Yessss
Interviewer: Okay, how we can prevent it?
Student: Yes, we should prevent it as prevention is always better than cure. It can lead to data loss and other problems so it can be difficult to fix it if it happens. The best case is that nothing like that takes place. [...]
Interviewer: I get it but how?
Student: By not building any web applications.
[Silence]
Interviewer: Nice, you may go. Do not call us. We will call you.19 -
Has anyone here have crazy ideas of what they want to do in life, only to realise those might be absolutely pointless?
As I've studied Food Production Technology, I have this idea of somehow making it possible to mix phages in foods for vaccination purposes. Phages are natural viruses to bacteria, so they are difficult to be used in that way...
Another idea is to make simulations of life of bacteria of different kinds.
And study the hell out of some pretty weird genetic mutations that are purely esthetic, but shouldn't happen.
Yeah, I am into microbiology and genetics...
I'd also like to develop games...14 -
So I work in IT for the police. I just received an "unneeded" encrypted smartphone.
I had to reconfigure it, in order to give it to the next policeman. Unfortunately nobody knew the password and there is actually no way to reset this damn thing.Trust me, i did my research.
About 2 days later i receive an angry call by the policeman that should be using the phone by now.
Policemen: "Why is my phone not ready yet?"
Me: "it's encrypted and nobody has the password."
Policemen: "Well just ask the previous owner then!"
Me:"It's a little difficult..."
Policemen: "Why?!?"
Me: "He shot himself."16 -
Sorry if I make a typo, my hands a still a little shaky, just had to stop myself from crying.
This morning I came in, opened my email, saw an automated response from Jira saying .... saying ..... saying the backend team provided details about their new endpoint.
After a year of screaming, they finally did it. It was so beautiful I fell to the floor and wept like a baby.
Thank you all for your support through this difficult time. Together we can accomplish anything!!!7 -
I just finished my thesis defense, one of the committee members obliterated me with incredibly difficult questions but it was so much fun to respond to this 40min smackdown after presenting all my work in 50 minutes. The battle has been won ladies and gentlemen, I am incredibly happy.13

In an effort to deal with the number of “top priority” tickets, management has come up with a new priority level, “urgent”, to help differentiate between tickets that are “top priority” and tickets that are actually “top priority”.
So as you can guess all tickets are now codified as “urgent”.
I’ve suggested management downgrade some tickets back to merely “top priority” as we’re clearly right back where we started with it being difficult to determine which order to do tickets in.
They’ve ignored my request as the bletherings of a clearly unenlightened peon, and have instead came up with a new priority, “mission critical” which will be reserved for the most hallowed of emerg— oh no wait everything is now “mission critical” who would have guessed?
So “Top priority” is the now lowest priority a ticket can have…Naturally.16 -
So yet another follow up rant on the Linux job hunting! (yes hello this is @linuxxx).
Got send a list with questions (for candidate screening) and was literally mentally preparing to answer all the questions (I expected shit like Linux commands, kernel stuff etc etc).
Then I saw the questions. Mother of god.
1. Have you ever worked with a Linux distro and if yes, which one(s)?
😶. Uhm I expected some more difficult stuff.
2. Have you ever worked with a hosting interface like CPanel etc?
😶😶. Alright I should adjust my view on the difficulty level of these questions.
And so it went on and on. I think I make a pretty good chance 😆.
I'll hear more at Monday and if all is good then I will get an interview through Skype with their American office!10 -
Whoever designed UEFI, FUCK YOU!! Giving the OS control over every fucking thing in the hardware instead of letting the BIOS do that separately, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT FUCKING MIND THOUGHT THAT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?!!
And same goes to fucking you Microsoft! How difficult is it to do a fucking ACPI shutdown and do it properly?! How fucking difficult is it to not make the fans spin like jet engines because why the fuck not?! And yes the fucking PC is dust-free and bloat-free so I don't want to see any fucking Wintard comment that.
You know where else I saw the inability to power down? In Linux 4.20-rc2. A kernel that is within active development, and rc2 at that!! A kernel branch that's designed to be unstable, for testing purposes. Meanwhile the stable branch of MS Windows does the same. Also designed to be unstable because fuck QA?! Filthy fucking motherfuckers!!27 -
Being a sysadmin, it's pretty difficult to get around the whole development of front-end stuff.. positioning, scaling, and everything... I hate it. So many ideas but only the ability to make the back-end and if it involves electronics that as well as networking. But building a pretty UI is beyond me... I love hating on all the frameworks and Node, but in all honesty.. front-end people, I kind of envy you 😅6

So I got a call from a school friend today.
I'm currently doing majors in Computer science and I hadn't talked to her since high school.
She: "Hi! How are you?"
Me: "Hey, I'm great! How are you?"
It's really difficult to talk to someone after 2-3 years, considering you didn't talk much in school also.
She: "I'm great too!"
Me: "So what's up?"
She: "Listen, my friend lost her iPhone today. Cab you help us in retrieving it?"
Me: *hangs up*6 -

This week I started a new job.
My role changed from "Full-stack-web-developer-sysadmin-DBA-helpdesk-strange-person-fixing-stuff-around" to "Back-end Developer".
Moreover, it's a full remote position (so difficult to find in Italy!), so:
1. I can wake up 1.5 hours later;
2. I don't have to waste anymore 2 hours every fucking day driving in traffic to reach the workplace;
3. I can use my fucking bathroom;
4. I can drink hot tea in August without being criticized. 😀
I'm fucking happy!13 -
Me: So, I've been looking through the code and there's barely any comments and documentation. What's up with that?
Him: Yeah, it's really complex and low level, so it's difficult to actually describe what it does.
Me: But that's exactly why you should document it! 🤦🤦🤦
Him: ...3 -
Was thinking of a name for my currently biggest project and thought of a funny one, took the first letter of each word and started to use that to refer to the project, was thinking about domain names and such already etc.
Just wrote it down and I suddenly noticed:
ONE OF THE LETTERS IN THE SHORTCUT ISN'T CORRECT.
How the fuck did I miss that for fucking weeks?! It's not like it's a difficult sentence/set of words or anything.
I'm so fucking glad I didn't register domains or shit yet.
How. In. The. Living. Hell.12 -
My boss likes to measure the spacing between DOM elements using a ruler to make sure everything is proportional.
I forgot to remove some padding on an element so it wasn't exactly centered, so he comes in and says...
"the padding on the site is off, I think you need to use this" *drops ruler on desk*
Now I have to keep this stupid ruler on my desk because whenever I forget to align something he says... "that's why I gave you the ruler"
Too difficult to explain to these subhumans that I don't need a ruler to write proper css8 -
Winter break is next week and I don't know what to do...
I have an exciting programming project I want to work on!
Buuuut, I also have this 1,500 page book I want to read!
Buuuuuuut, my manuscript still needs some work! I want to work on it as well.
If I do all three, I won't get to finish anything, so only one task during break.
Three of my favorite things... Why must choices be so difficult?
Also, the picture is the 1K page book I bought. :) It's beautiful!28 -
A rant from the old box, with some minor edits because I don't remember the exact wording anymore.
So last time I had this window cleaner visit me, and he'd do his job while I was troubleshooting a broken tablet that my past home supervisor donated to me. After he was done he came to me, very impressed.
He then said: "Wow, you are disassembling this.. you must be very technical."
Me (kinda tired): "Thanks. And yeah pretty much."
He: "Does this mean that you can fix anything?"
Me: "Kind of. It depends. But I can't fix printers."
He: "Why is that? Are they so complicated?"
(the tablet I had disassembled is orders of magnitude more difficult than a printer)
Me: "Not really. It's just that that's often what users ask next."
He: …
The guy immediately left 🤣4 -
Manager: How’s the progress coming along?
Dev: The section of code I’m working with is one of the more difficult ones so it’s a little slow
Manager: Ok well I didn’t write that section of the code
Dev: I’m not saying you did I’m just giving you the status update that you asked for
Manager: Ok well I can’t really do anything about that so how about you tell me something I can do something about instead of just complaining about code THAT I DIDN’T EVEN WRITE!! *Marks self as offline*

Wife - Lets go for a dinner tonight.
Husband (HR Manager) - Ok.
Husband - Should we go to a cheaper restaurant ?
Wife - No. Let's go to Royal Palace hotel.
Husband - (silence for a minute) - Ok, See you at 7.O 'Clock.
On the way, around 6.30 pm...
Husband - Once upon a time, I had pani puri competition with my sister and she ate 30 pani-puris(Search in Google, It is the most delicious chat) and defeated me.
Wife - What's so difficult in it?
Husband - Defeating me in Pani-puri eating competition is so difficult.
Wife - I can easily beat you.
Husband - Please leave it. It's not your cup of tea.
Wife - Let us have that competition right now.
Husband - So you want to see yourself defeated?
Wife - Let's see.
They both stop at a Pani-puri stall and start eating...
After about 30 Pani-puris the husband gave up.
The wife was also full, but to defeat her husband, she ate one more and shouted, *"You lose."*
The bill was Rs 50/- and wife was back home and happy as she won the bet.
Moral of the Story...
*Main aim of a HR Manager is to satisfy employee with minimum investments. Winning attitude with less investment, ensuring strong Return On Investment!* 😃😜😀😄😆😅😂😝😎5 -
Idea: Emoji passwords
Bdixbsufhdbe HEAR ME OUT
I know, I know, emojis belong with teenage girls on Snapchat but there are some theoretical benefits to emoji passwords.
Brute Force attacks are useless! With such a wide range of characters and so many different combinations, they just wouldn't be viable.
Dictionary attacks are less useful! Because those require...words.
They can be easier to remember. Tell a story with your emojis. Images are easier to commit to memory than combinations of letters and numbers.
Users would adopt the feature! For whatever reason, the general population fucking loves these things. So emoji passwords probably won't take very long to see use.
I don't know much about this last one, so I saved it for last, but I would imagine that decryption would be more difficult if the available values is quite vast. I dunno how rainbow tables and hash defucking works so I'll just put this here as a "maybe"
😀33 -
"There are two ways of constructing a software design; one way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult." - C. A. R. Hoare

Most of things I'm about to say are experienced by almost 99% of developers in Africa including my country so I'm going to make it a more general rant.
As an African developer, life is both exciting and frustrating at the same time. Some of the challenges that make life difficult for developers in Africa include:
1). Slow Internet Speed: The internet in Africa can be extremely slow and unreliable, making it frustrating to work on projects that require large file downloads. This is a serious challenge for freelance developers who work from home.
2). Unstable Electricity: Frequent power outages due to inadequate infrastructure, insufficient investment in energy production and distribution, and political instability makes it difficult for developers in Africa to work consistently. Most times I get frustrated because you can experience black out at anytime of the day which could last for hours to days automatically rendering you useless if you have no power backup generator at home.
3). Low Pay: While the opportunities for software developers in Africa are quite high, the salary is often disappointing. Many talented programmers end up seeking better opportunities overseas. In fact I quit my full-time job because of this reason.
4). Lack of Support for Tech Start-ups: There are few venture capital firms in Africa willing to invest in new ideas, which makes it difficult for tech start-ups to get off the ground. It's just sad, you can have an idea and just die with it.
So in summary, it's not a walk in the park to be a developer in Africa, but despite all of that I am glad to be a part of the African journey, having the opportunity to had work at a tech agency firm on various projects ranging from healthcare to finance, I find it rewarding to know that my work has contributed to a better future for my continent. 🤞6 -
Just started my new job.
Poorly defined requirements ✅
Expecting things to be done yesterday ✅
Poorly managed teams ✅
Terrible legacy code ✅
Half the development team is offshore ✅
Maybe I’m just selfish, but I need to work in an environment that has the following
A good technology stack.
A competent manager/team leader.
Competent colleagues.
Clearly defined documentation.
A proper onboarding process.
Why is this so difficult to find in organisations?12 -
How motherfucking difficult can it be to port forward something internally?!
I've been on this for fucking hours and I'm so fucking done with this shit.
I know I'm doing something wrong myself but I can't find a good resource 😠8 -
My call team lost power. If our major clients try to call and can't, we're fucked. My boss isn't helping and I can't do shit about it without him, he just keeps saying they need to get power. The people they need for that aren't answering. How fucking difficult is it to stop jerking off long enough to help them out so we don't get fucked out of egregious amounts of money.12

You know what I envy Americans about? Your .gov domain.
It is so difficult here to detect if the website is honest or a scam because our government is too dense to put all their sites as subdomains of one trusted domain. Like dod.country.tld for the department of defense or justice.ministry.country.tld for the ministry of justice.
No, these idiots buy ministry-of-justice.tld, because no scammer ever could conceive the idea of buying ministryofjustice.tld to host a scam site.
At least publish an up2date list with domains I can trust.8 -
Feeling productive at a Sunday evening. Let's install a DNS server and a fucking mail server on two forgotten VPS's I am still paying for.
SO A-FUCKING-PPEARANTLY, THEIR WEB MANAGEMENT PANEL IS FUCKED UP SO I CANNOT REINSTALL MY MOTHERFUCKER VPS's. HOW FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING DIFFICULT CAN IT BE.15 -
Apple vs. Microsoft: who sucks more?
At first glance, it's obvious that Apple sucks more. Their overpriced products are so bad that they rely heavily on vendor lock-in and cult-like brainwashing.
Then again, Apple's vendor lock-in also acts as buyer lock-out so that it's easy to avoid Apple. Basically, Apple sucking more also means they suck less. Think different indeed.
Microsoft on the other hand sucks more because their crap is so ubiquitous that it's difficult to avoid Microsoft.
That looks like a draw - but here's the tie breaker: Microsoft tries to ape Apple, BUT! Microsoft even sucks at copying Apple's suck.
So here's the final verdict: Microsoft sucks more.38 -
Perfect job? Does it even exist?
We do a job because it's something others consider tedious or difficult or time consuming.
So my perfect job would be one that feels like a hobby every day and pays very well.12 -
So I just made a throwaway SO account because I had a 'risky' question and I don't wanna loose my 22 hard earned reputation points on my main account.
Maybe it's just me but I think it's very sad that asking a question on SO that doesn't get downvotes is so difficult.
Anyways, if anyone knows about UMDF drivers, here's the question: https://stackoverflow.com/q/...5 -

!!anger
I bought a new wlan card to fix my infuriating wifi issues. It's a TPLink Archer T6E, supports ac, and ostensibly uses Ath9k drivers. Multiple reviews said "installed, booted, and connected! So easy."
Guess what?
I've spent the past two hours trying to get it to work. No banana.
Some other reviews have them fighting with the drivers for days. Looks like that's going to be me, too. 😡
Why the fuck is wifi so fucking difficult?19 -
Pro security tip:
Use a very simple password because h4x0rs expect a difficult one so they can't cr4ck yours8 -
Person who has an attention span of 3 minutes, has never done math before, and has no background in any form of code whatsoever, and will never need it:"I'm thinking about learning Python."
Me:"Go for it but it will be difficult to remain motivated."
Person:"But I really want to do this."
Me:"So did every corpse on Everest."4 -
Learning Python after starting with C# is proving difficult...
Where are my brackets and semi-colons?! I feel so unsafe.3 -
I love my Nexus 6P but goddamn do I hate its battery. Shuts down randomly at 25%, lasts only half a day, and a lot of other crap. So I want to replace it, bought a new battery from AliExpress but didn't buy any tools for it.. so I'll have to make do with what I currently have. On iFixit I found that the replacement process is apparently quite difficult as it's glued in (God I fucking hate that) and can only be safely removed by heatgunning it (which I don't have a heatgun for). Are the results worth the risk of breaking it? Is it possible to pull it out while cold, without too much risk of breaking stuff or damaging the battery? I've got experience in disassembling 2 previous phones and one of them had the battery glued in as well.. and I didn't break the battery (in fact I'm still using it) but it was very difficult.. and this is my daily driver. So yeah 😶20

We've had a bunch of flaky tests in our repo for a while now that no one could be bothered to fix; we'd just re-run ci until it's green. Today I looked into it and I was inspired to make this meme, because I lived through it.
Adding logs to investigate just lowered the fail rate making investigation more difficult. I do have an idea of what it might be though so, we'll see tomorrow.3 -
The handle on the faucet in one of the bathrooms broke off today. You can still operate the faucet with some finger strength. It is just difficult. We also got a reminder today that we are not to be streaming video or music using the company wifi. They ask that we use our own bandwidth on our phones.
So on the bathroom door where the faucet handle is broken I placed this sign:10 -
Today I spent ten minutes because I didn't see the difference between 'cmp' and 'cpm'
Do I have a slight case of dyslexia? :O
It must be so difficult to be a dyslexic programmer :O18 -
A lot of the string operations in Python, because they are named like shit.
First you have startswith. No underscore. Just two words glued together. No case notation, nothing. So ugly and difficult to remember when Python isn't your only language.
And then there's tolower. Wait, no, it's actually just lower. If we're gonna stick with the shitty naming, can we at least keep the two-words, no underscore thing? No, I guess it's easier to save those two characters.
And isupper, the function to get supper from your iPhone.
Yeah, it's small. But aren't most of our gripes about languages tiny anyways.3 -
How my year has gone so far...
Management: Bobby, we are replacing your old hammer.
Me: Ok cool.
Management: Well actually there's so much going on...here is a wrench instead.
Me: But, this isn't a hammer.
Management: Yes we are aware but we are busy and cannot buy a hammer for a several more months.
Me: How the fuck am I suppose to hammer nails with this?
Management: Oh gosh you are right. That sounds difficult. We will grind down one side of it so you have a flat surface to hammer in those nails.
Management: Oh and by the way, those nails are super important so don't screw anything up.12 -
I found some rum!
Specifically kahlua.
Kahlua, milk, Tito’s. Mmm. And so strong.
I tried adding creme de cacao, but I wasn’t strong enough to open the bottle. 🙁
Anyway, we played a family game that amounts to throwing a ball or other toy into a bucket from increasing distances / more difficult areas of the room. With my drunken coordination it was a great time. 😁
No work today.
Just packing and fun.

So I was reviewing my old code. Refactoring and improving the documentation.
This is a production app that is being used 24/7/365.
I see myself using "bar = foo" and there's even an explanation of what it does.
Apparently I resolved a relatively difficult Date object issue and had to use temporary variables.
Didn't know how to call them and ended up with these jewels.3 -

I promoted duckduckgo to friends on Facebook and got them in a discussion about it. People generally are fairly receptive (with one annoying uncle pointing out the irony of posting it on Facebook xD).
One mentioned it was difficult to switch because Google was "just there", so I pointed to instructions on how to make it default.
Also enticing them with theme changes.
Feels good. Next to teach them how to use proxies :p
meta rant: I categorised this as a rant/story, mainly because it is related to tech, should I have just done "random"?29 -
So I just received an email from a developer, saying my client hired him to take care of their website from now on. This client counted on me since 2012, so I felt a little... Betrayed. Even though this client was not big and a little difficult.
It's weird. I am trying to transition to something better in my professional life, but I'm not feeling confident of what I'm doing. Sometimes I feel my professional life is ruining. Uncertainty sucks.
Additionally, my desktop decided to stop working today and won't turn on. Oh well.6 -
No one fucking knows how to handle/raise errors.
I feel like this is the least talked topic in all fucking programming industry. This shit needs to be tought even more than the fucking SOLID, DRY, KISS, YAGNI and other kinds of buzzwords that fancy devs love tossing left and right.
Basically everyone just does "whatever you dumb error just dont bother me". They will just log/return null/ignore the errors and be in their oblivion with bugs propagating upstream the call stack.
"Throwing errors you say? Ew, why do you want to produce more errors?". Yeah, right, just stick another log/return null/or ignore the fact that the monke calling your function with bullshit arguments.
"But bro it's so difficult and time consuming and it would never happen!" Yes, you fucker! Yes! Programming IS fucking difficult if you want reliable systems! Did you not know that!? Well now you do! Go and fucking learn it!
FUCK!11!1!!27 -
Spent an hour and a half renaming a method everywhere in a project from `feature_name` to `feature_name!`. There are a lot of constants, symbols, and other methods that use "feature_name" as a prefix (plus comments and spec descriptions), so was a little more difficult than normal.
Should have taken like 5 minutes with a proper IDE refactor tool. but noo, it was too difficult for RubyMine. wah wah wah. Stupid thing. Not even the search tool was useful -- it's limited to 100 results, and there were around 250 for that substring.
I ended up having to run specs repeatedly to find all the remaining instances, which took freaking forever. blahhh20 -
I am just thrilled about the new employees! They are so talented…
O-M-F-G!
Who hired these people!? It-is-incredible! (Actually, I know who hired them!) Just unbelievable amount of wasted time holding their hand on every step of the way. 10 years experience? I-think-not! This will not working out!
Don’t even speak understandable English. Just difficult to know what they are asking since they lack the basic principles of the english language.
Beginning of the end.

Completing 95% of a project is infinitely more difficult than completing 70% of the project.
I am still in college studying for an electrical major and my side projects are the only dev work I do, so I don't even have any excuses to not complete them, I just jump to the newest project idea I had and forget all about the old ones until one day, several months later, I look at the code I wrote, get disgusted by how terrible it is and lose all the remaining motivation to work on it.5 -
How difficult is it to do things and do them properly? Clearly in 2019, very difficult. And why on Earth would you do things properly, when there's get rich quick schemes, shortcuts to be found and taken, and that filthy filthy legal tender. If the shitty implementation makes a profit, why do it properly? Makes no sense.
Except it fucking does. And you know why? Because of the guy that comes after you, that works with your fucking bullshit implementation and probably curses you to the moon and beyond in the process. Just like you probably did with the guy that came before you, with that bullshit you got tasked to work with. Don't be that guy. And don't be that guy to the next guy.
Still with me? Good. Here's the thing. You can do [insert job here] quick and dirty. But you're guaranteed to be checking back on it and fixing the crap later on. Or worse yet, someone else will be cursing you to the moon and beyond while they are fixing / working around your crap. So why not do it right in the first place? Is this why we can't have nice things?5 -
I just gave robocopy another try, in order to get my WanBLowS D: drive and my file server synchronized again, in preparation to move that file server VM to a LXC container instead.. bad choice. I should've used rsync in WSL.
Hey you Not so Robust File Copier for WanBLowS, how many attempts of you fucking up my file server's dotfiles does it take before I configure you right with every fucking option you have specified? How about you actually behave somewhat decently like rsync where -avz works 99% of the time, in local, remote, any scenarios that you can think of that aren't super obscure?! HOW DIFFICULT CAN IT BE, REDMOND CERTIFIED ENGANEERS?!!
Drown in a pond of bleach, Microshit certified MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!
Well, at least this time it didn't fuck up my .ssh directory so I can still authenticate to the VM.. so I guess that at least that's a win. Even that you can't take for granted anymore with this piece of garbage!!!4 -
Haha - whoever says Azure is totally fine unless people are too stupid to configure it might want to think again. Apparently, that shit is so difficult to configure securely that even Microsoft fails to do it: https://msrc-blog.microsoft.com/202...9

Why is naming stuff so difficult? 🤬😡

Here's an even meaner prank. Make it just a tad more difficult on them.
Set chrome in kiosk mode, so they can't switch out of the browser.
Unfortunately 'Alt + F4' still works, but they'd have to know that ahead of time.
And then kill off `explorer.exe` so they can't press the windows key.
You can either set this up as a bat, or you can do all of this from the Task Manager.
```
chrome --chrome-frame --kiosk "http://fakeupdate.net/win10/"
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
```
And to really piss them off, set it up such that every time they reboot it just goes straight to the update screen
You can set Chrome to run as the Windows shell instead of explorer.exe. Just set the registry
```
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Shell =
[chrome path]
My boss (also a developer) walks in regularly to tell us how annoying it is when her boss is walking in when she is working on something.
No fuck off we don't need a team meeting about it.
We shouldn't need to go in front of a panel to begin with, let us get on with our job and let us automate the shit so sprint planning wouldn't be so difficult2 -
Joined a new team at work 6 months ago. Immediately set upon by a useless PO who was somehow set in her ways while still being around 30 years old. Absolutely refused to change the broken team dynamic or processes in any way whatsoever. Made terrible tickets, never did refinement on tickets so they were always missing stuff and constantly blocked. Generally unlikeable and difficult to work with, incompetent at her job and resolutely refused to change literally anything to make the team function better.
She finally leaves after 6 months and the team dynamic changes immediately. Suddenly we are improving our processes, getting stakeholder input, refining tickets, taking reasonable amounts of work in a sprint. We have discussions without her butting in and getting frustrated when you bring up legitimate concerns. No longer do you have to tiptoe around and appease her ego if you want to point out the obvious flaws in the work she drew up or even just examine it from a technical perspective.
It's insane how much things can improve once you shed the dead weight of people that are just determined to be difficult and won't budge an inch to change their ways. Good riddance.4 -
Taking a class in school where we are learning C++. The kid sitting next to me never listens. Had a couple of errors, added a few cout lines in which he put "count" instead of cout and ended up with 108 errors. That class is going to be so difficult for him..1
Making an MVP is hard as hell. It's not even coding that makes it hard, it's knowing when to stop that's so damn difficult. By the time you're ready with something, your brain says "Hey...wouldnt it be great if you added this!" Then you add it, "whoa add this too!"...several days later:
Brain: "The fuck is this, all you needed was that"
😭😭😭7 -
I love good advertisement but I hate bad products with "good" ads!
It's so difficult to find a reliable and up-to-date source for what's a good and bad game engine at the time. Every engine says it's the best. Every browser says it's the fastest. Every anti-virus app says it's the safest. God damn, come of with creative way and don't say your product is the best! *tilted*4 -
Got my new laptop today!
Traded my old laptop..
The devRant stickers were too difficult to remove, so I had to part with them. :(2 -
Before I decided to learn C, I had heard tell of pointers being "hard to use". Of course I thought "maybe so, " after all, that was basically the only thing I heard about pointers, "they are hard!".
And so, when I learned C, and I got to the part about pointers, I was expecting at least some trouble (I can't know everything) and it was just... easy? Maybe the trickiest thing was how * has two different meanings based on the context (declare/dereference) but that was easy too.
Why the hell is all I hear from people about pointers is that they're difficult?15 -
So, I've been working as a developer for 15 years almost. I recently started what could reasonably be described as my dream job. As in absolutely fucking awesome. Really interesting product, sane technology, nice co-workers, decent salary, 100% remote.
So, why am I suffering from motivation issues? I find it difficult to get started on the simplest tasks. and looking at the check-ins from my coworkers is intimidating. I had a phase of burnout previously so I'm watching that in myself too...
So far the best solutions I've found are.
1 Coffee, lots of coffee.
2 quick catch-up calls so that I'm reassured I'm actually doing the right work and the quality is good enough.
3 following TDD strictly and not thinking too far ahead on each iteration. (I recommend "99 bottles of OOP")8 -
Omg, delegation to others feels like the last, most difficult skill to master. Letting go can be so hard.
Patience, me. Patience.3 -
A lot of larger companies seem to be a happy about forcing employees to change their password every three months or so. They do it for security measures so that it is more difficult to break through the system, however most people end up making the worst passwords.
Instead of forcing a very good password on them every year or two maybe, they all end up having passwords like: "Summer16", "Qwer1234", "London15".
I used to work for our national police, and this was the case there as well...7 -
in some parts of the world it is 28 already and it is my birthday. so age++
Why it is so difficult to find an internship for a Computer Science Student?
I do have good resume, I am full of energy, I can spend a lot of time on solving problems and development. I can learn new things.
But everyone wants a intern who knows everything and can do miracle for them. No one is giving chance to ones who are in learning phase. Just try us and you will see the potential in us.
Been trying to get a good internship from last 3 months. 😔7 -
Being in IT is difficult.
At first noone wants you, even for pennies.
Then everything seems difficult and complex, you start to envy the giants (seniors) who are headhunted via various channels.
Then you reach the kind of level where you start receiving some attention in linkedin - you almost want to frame them! Feeling so proud of yourself..
Then these job offers become sooo annoying.. But they keep flowing in from everywhere..
I wonder what's next6 -
Why are some seniors just so full of themselves? I mean... Yeah I know that they know more than me (junior) but common, you don't have to rub it in my face! Tho I'd rather have it that they rub it in my face than them explain it with the most difficult terms / hardest words they could find in the dictionary!!
I also don't need them to complain that I'm on a different platform than them (while they help me)4 -
I was working as an intern at small company, and after a month we signed contract
But each month they had some excuse for not paying me, or any of the employees
So I quit after 3 months without any payment
But I would not have been where I am, if I was not in that difficult condition, it made me work harder, and thought me to always keep my options open :-) -
Fuck the JavaScript ecosystem; Fuck React, Redux, and a big special fuck you to React-Router. And fuck interviews that give week long assignments.
The whole fucking JavaScript community makes the simplest things so complicated just so that they can tell Backend and Mobile Devs “Hey our job is difficult too”; fuck you, it isn’t! You made it difficult. and so that they can write corny emoji-laden medium articles about it to supplement their meagre income. What’s more the articles are outdated in less than a week.
Fuck JavaScript; APIs changes everyday a week and it’s documentation is updated every decade.4 -
Why the fuck do offline-enabled (music, video) apps load forever on slow network but instantaneously in airplane mode? Is it so difficult to show cached content first and refresh only once downloaded? Yes, I mean you, Spotify, Amazon Music, Amazon Video and Audible!!! 🤬1
Dude what the fuck with C#'s code style?
Pascal case variable names and classes? Don't we do this so we can differentiate between variables and classes??
Newline between parentheses and brackets?
Retarded auto get/ set methods that serve no purpose than to make code difficult to read and debug?
And after all that shit, string, which is a class, has a lowercase s and is treated as if a primitive?
I really have no idea why this language is so widely praised. The only thing I like about it is that it's the only major bytecode language that has operator overloading and reference parameters.19 -
So, I am feeling low in life. I want to do so many things and not a single one is going as planned. On top of that Bitcoin has taken a plunge and my funds are stuck with a shitty exchange and I cannot withdraw till tomorrow.
Le a github issue appears and I am thinking what went wrong now. I had added a few new features to the app which would have broken the old configurations. So, I ask this guy to re-configure and test.
After about 2 hours I get a reply from the guy saying "Thanx for the great new features and for creating this great open source project!!!"
This made my day. And I am thinking Life's good. Life is so easy and we make it so difficult for us. The first thing I am doing after this review is write this rant. Now back to work.2 -
I'm marking some exams for the class I teach right now, and I'm just so FRUSTRATED at the number of students that can't just fill out a STUPID multiple-choice answer!!! For goodness sake, don't just leave it blank, and don't give me 2 answers! How difficult is it to just guess a number between 1 and 4?!?!2 -
I'm trying really hard not to be sensitive, but my manager is making it difficult with their "constructive criticisms" ...
Just finished up a call with them. And I'm so tired. I'm not even angry or upset, I just feel so tired of their bullshit.
I set up a meeting as a courtesy to get them up to date on all the code changes I made. Last night I stayed up late to try and get things in before the deadline and this morning just killed me when they say.
"I don't think I should have given you this."
"I was right, you weren't ready to start doing this."
(Then don't even bother giving me anymore tasks then, I don't fucking care.)
"you clearly don't understand how branches work"
(Absolutely fucking false, I fixed that shit and am very familiar with how to understand the structure of the fucking repo)
"you are rushing and I don't need you messing up the website"
(I'm being proactive you twat, not rushing, making it very difficult for me to do the work and being productive)
Like seriously bro! Don't fucking patronize me for the work I was trying to get out. And trust me this fucking meeting is done in order to get ahead of potential issues, not a time to be condescending of my skills or lack there-of as you seem to so keenly think.
If you had this much doubt about my abilities then why give me the fucking Sr. title? Fucking trust that I'm being honest, and I'm trying to get us to a good spot, not fucking sabotage the company. God fucking damn.6 -
So today was interesting.
I had to extract the domain from an email address and compare the domain to a hard coded whitelist, nothing difficult, fuck takes 2 min really.
Except the project starts throwing 500 errors for no god damn reason, like seriously, I double check syntax, nope looks fine, run pho's syntax checker on the file
# php -l /path/to/file.php
Nope says it's all good.
Checks error log on server -> no log
OoooooooooKay then.
Comments out the few lines, saves, errors gone.
remove comments, error comes back.
Do this a few times, and magically the fucking thing stops throwing errors, now I haven't actually changed anything, and I know this project is so fragile I don't know how it stays running at times but fuck me this is a painful joke.6 -
Have u ever opened youtube app on ur phone and started watching a yt video but before u could watch that video u got interrupted with an ad that u can not skip and so u got so frustrated to the point that u grabbed ur dick and slapped the phone screen so the ad can eat ur dick and just before the ad expired u jizzed on the face of that ad and so when the ad was about to finish there was a skip button so u tapped that button not with ur finger but with the tip of ur dick although it was difficult to do that because the jizz kind of interfered with ur touch screen controls so u had to wipe the jizz from ur phone screen with ur dick into the mouth of whoever was in the ad in order to properly press the skip button for that ad so u can simply skip it and finally start watching the yt video that u were initially trying to do ?6
Long time, no rant. Why is facial hair so difficult to control? How do people even grow beards without looking like hobos all the time? Do I have to make some sort of sacrifice to a dark and malevolent entity?
Believe me, it's so much easier to keep on top of shaving body hair than taming face fur. Especially because your facial hair is, you know, on your *face* which means it's very visible. You can't hide it if you mess up. Unless you decide that wearing a balaclava is a good idea when going outside, like when going grocery shopping. Generally that isn't received too well though.17 -
So I had an interview with Amazon, I had 2 technical rounds and 2 managerial rounds. Now I am waiting for the HR to call, this guy is not picking up the call or replying to my emails. Its almost 3 days now and I am FREAKING OUT!!
How difficult is it to tell the candidate that the application is in progress/accepted or you have been rejected!!!
I hate how difficult it is just to schedule a meeting. Friday at 10 becomes Monday at 10 becomes Tuesday at 9:30 for some reason. Now I'm standing here, meeting is pushed to 10 anyway, and everyone is waiting on the director who's taking his sweet time. So now it's 10:15 and we're just waiting, hoping we can just get some actual work done before lunch.3
God I hate when dev work gets all political.
Our team had a technical meeting with a difficult partner/customer, that wants to connect to our internal service, so we are writing an Integration Service for this.
Apparently the project is very important on both sides and highly political so in the meeting there was a member of the Board of directors of them. We just wanted to check one feature to verify they can connect, etc.
After some minor bugs showed up, that guy goes on ranting about how this is all a joke ("Verarschung" literally) and how we did not deliver all features yet as promised (Note : that was not promised) and basically indirectly personally attacked us, our company and our team.
It's incredible how such assholes can stay in such positions.5 -
Day 9 of non smoking (attempt no. 16). How do people cope without smoking? its so difficult. After phone call with client... go for a smoke. Get off plane/train go immediately to smoke. Done some good code/solved something, go for celebratory smoke. Have a rehearsal with my band... go for a smoke. Go to the pub...go for a smoke. It’s woven in to the fabric of my existence and unpicking it is a long and painful task. I don’t do the e-cig thing. I don’t want to swap addictions.20
While calling a tech company:
[Rust]
I have a bunch of computational steps in a Rust program, all very expensive. They all depend on each other, forming a cycle-free and rather small graph of dependencies which is not a tree. The results of each of them for a given input are likely used tens of times by the others, so I would like to cache the subresults dynamically.
How would I go about doing this, considering that caching (rightfully) requires mutable access to the cache and multiple operations often refer to the same subresult?
I can't ask SO because they'd just tell me to use another language or recalculate everything every time, fully convinced that difficult questions can only emerge from design mistakes.12 -
Explaining difficult things in a way that they are understandable by non-expert audiences.
This helps a lot to focus on simplicity when programming. And simple means it'll get understood by your peer programmers, it is simpler to test and it will be easier to maintain, and so on... -
Quite amazingly, yes!
as a matter of fact one of my parents is actually also in information technology or related field so there are very much aware of how in demand the job is and how difficult it is as well and the best part is a lot of my engineering friends are also switching to computer science and just because it is the better choice of because of how over saturated the engineering field is so yeah i think i have a better career choice than most of my peers
Applied for a job which would like you to have some C# knowledge. Not required though. I'm like, fine, I know Java (and I'm pretty decent at it) and I know that C# looks like Java in many areas. So, I made it clear that I didn't have any C# experience, and now they require me to do a 2 hour long "difficult" test in ASP.NET and C#... GG, the search for a new job continues.2
Why is it so difficult to copy paste in an editor which is considered as one of the most sophisticated editor ? I use VIM for almost everything except for copy pasting . All those internal buffer ..external buffer things are complicating things..
And the sad part is ..once i was editing a bash script using sublime ..I pressed escape :wq .. and tried executing that for a long time .. I was clueless for sometime after which i realised i didnt save the document..
If at all VIM had easy ways to copy paste..😥8 -
So I was leaving feedback on eBay for a fountain pen I bought, and learned that "pen is" triggers the profanity filter. I assume there are legitimate reasons for this (people making it so we can't have nice things) but still. It wasn't profanity or an attempt around the filter in the context of my transaction!
I wanted to talk about the pen I bought without sounding stilted or unnatural. That's difficult in 80 characters or less. Don't make it harder for me, please.6 -
This might just be me and my OCD talking, but am I the only one who gets super annoyed with sloppy CSS formatting?
So like, if somebody writes a sloppily formatted rule like this without spacing out each property and value:
#signUpButton {color:#FFF;background:#000;float:right;clear:both;padding:5px;position:absolute;top:5px;right:20px;height:100px;width:45px;}
As opposed to something like this, which just looks much cleaner:
#signUpButton { color: #FFF; background; #000; float: right; clear: both; padding: 5px; }
The formatting makes no difference in how the CSS is evaluated and rendered, but I find the spaceless style so ugly and difficult to read/edit, whereas the spaced out style is much more appealing to the eyes and easier to read
I find myself reformatting other people's CSS that works perfectly fine just so it will be easier to read/edit for anybody else that looks at it in the future8 -
Your Telerik Kendo UI has a bug? I can fix it. It shouldn't be difficult because there is just so much support and documentation.
Yo I heard you like compiling C/Cpp so we make you compile and link each individual file so you need a makefile for compiling everything. But that shit still gets to annoying to maintain so you make the make files with cmake. Just so you can compile a library basically at all.
And dont get me started on autoconf and random configure scripts you have to run before you actually configure shit.
Can we make compiling a regualr program any more difficult so that we need a whole ass A4 page of documentation just to end up with a binary of something?15 -
Stop writing motherfucking state management libraries every week that are supposed to "take the pain out" of redux. Fuck this. If you find redux hard, I don't think we should work together. So I got the Google Foobar challenge while I was in highschool. I completed up to level 3 of it and got into contact with a recruiter. They said to contact them when I was in college. I then stopped doing the challenge due to school keeping me too busy. I've heard that level 4 is the hardest level and requires high level programming and math concepts to be able to do. Should I complete it now or wait until I have done more difficult courses in cs?2
Fucking damn! This program is so poorly built that it's racking up terrible amounts of technical debt. This should be fucking easier than this, but because of how closely coupled everything is I'm now having to suffer through this ungodly beast of code.
I was aiming for a nice top down model where things communicated straight down, but with each additional feature requested by my PM, there are things that are growing increasingly more difficult to build around.
I could rebuild the entire thing, but this is the culmination of 8 months of work!
The most difficult esoteric programming language is not Brainfuck. It is Malbolge:
"It took two years for the first Malbolge program to appear. The author himself has never written a Malbolge program. The first program ["Hello World"] was not written by a human being; it was generated by a beam search algorithm (...)"
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...)
So basically it took a brutforce try-and-error approach to write "Hello World". Absolutely crazy! Imagine malware written like that 🤖5 -
Recently saw a rant here asking how bad it would if SO went out for a while, with most replies saying it would be good, and asking people to read documentation instead.
Well i tried to prepare myself for that and tried to read the selenium documentation for getting the html of a page. After 30 mins couldnt find it. A google search returned a SO answer which i didnt have to click on coz it had it in the first line.. How difficult is it to provide documentation functionwise/attributewise instead of long tutorials when i click on Documentation.? C++ libs and major python libs do it so good.6 -
New question to ask potential employers: What makes this work so difficult? is it innovative or in a challenging domain? Or is it because of a poorly documented, poorly maintained code base between multiple groups that can't agree on terminology?
Though if you ask, you should probably be more polite than I am hearing this in my head.2 -
I just can't get my head around it. How could a "language" like cmake become so widely used and popular? Let alone be the horrible syntax or the documentation which is an insult to anyone who is trying to read it.
I mean seriously??: " function_xyz( PARAM1 PARAM2 PARAM3) : for this use case A pass the keyword A and the words X Y Z, for use case B pass the keyword B and the words A B C you can also add the keyword D simply to increase the number of possible behaviours this stupid function can have."
But yeah i get it, it's free its cross platform and so on.
But how can after version 10000000.1, after adding dozens of "macros or functions" the most simplest and straight forward use case without any fucking thirdparties be so fucking difficult to implement.
And why are there for any use case 50 different ways of doing it? instead of one simple way?
Really, I just don't get it.4 -
Can't decide if I should join this nice internship or let myself enjoy this summer and rest a bit, as I burned out a bit this semester with studying and freelancing.
Why is it so difficult to decide..
And I have to decide tomorrow. I guess I'm terrible at decision-making sometimes Ffs..3 -
The most difficult part about learning/working with new technology is the lack of online support and a really small community! So every time you're stuck with an error you got to open each and every configuration file to see which little value was throwing that page long error!!!!
The same happened with me while working with the new RedHat CEPH Storage while I was configuring my nodes using ceph-ansible. A new error pops up and it was like reaching milestones when I found the error halting up the execution of the playbook!1 -
Why is it so fucking difficult for mobile OSs (Android/iOS) to revert to mobile data when the WiFi is clearly not working? It’s so annoying when my phone connects to some AP 10 fucking nautical miles away and tries desperately to get a connection to the internet when I have a data plan that works just fine. The solution would be so fucking simple: before the phone switches to WiFi connection it should simply probe the internet. Login required? Ask me if I want to proceed before showing me the fucking login portal. No response at all? Then don’t even bother going any further with it.5
Can someone relate to it? We have a very simple process:
1. Create a ticket 🎫
2. Specify the requirement 📑
3. Assign the ticket to a developer 👨🦰👩🦰
4. Optional: make a meeting with the developer and go throw the specification if it is a complex feature 🗓️
Under pressure it looks like this:
Someone tells you to implement the request as fast a possible, no written specification, in best case you get a brief email 📧 also the feature has to be available asap in production and they is only poorly tested...
Or they want to test in production because the data in test system is "missing" ⛔☢️☣️
It is so annoying that is so difficult to stick to such a simple process 😭 it really freaks me out 😒😫12 -
"Programming is a craft. At its simplest, it comes down to getting a
computer to do what you want it to do (or what your user wants it to do). As a programmer, you are part listener, part advisor, part interpreter, and part dictator. You try to capture elusive requirements and find a way of expressing them so that a mere machine can do them justice. You try to document your work so that others can understand it, and you try to
engineer your work so that others can build on it. What's more, you try to do all this against the relentless ticking of the project clock. You work small miracles every day.
It's a difficult job. "
I'm fed up with my work. I am the only dev so I have to manage everything, from negotiating integration protocols to design and implementation. The field is rather exotic and I don't have much room to grow and develop my skillset. I earn literally 1/4 of what my peers make in other companies doing more interesting things...
But then again my boss (the company is real small) helped me a lot during some difficult times and I don't want to pull the rug from under him. So I'm trying to get things organized and done as much as possible so as to leave everything good for my successor, but that's hard since im the only dev and i have to do everything...
Kinda vicious cycle...4 -
A lady that I have been talking to suddenly went radio silent on me. And refused to answer my messages and calls.
Anyhow, I blocked her and deleted her contact but I’m so heartbroken. I hope I recover from this heartache. It’s so close. I thought it was gonna work. I thought this was the one.
This is just why I love computers. When you mess up, they tell you you mess up and even point to the line and column. Humans are damn difficult.4 -
Pretty difficult to control bad rebasing so... merge for the win!!! #Git #developerproblems who is with me??
To all self made seniors (and those who got granted this title because it was a morale boost): is it really so difficult to grasp ideas like: Single responsibility? Don't repeat yourself? Encapsulation?
Seriously? Is it difficulty level of some quantum physics or what?
I'm not a fucking genius myself either, but when I see 300-500 LoCs function, accepting 10 parameters, having half of code duplicated in different parts of solution - I really wanna start firing people ON THE SPOT.
P.s.
To all shitty developers advocates - I know that everyone makes mistakes sometimes - I'm talking here about consistent "don't give a shit about code" behaviour.23 -
That is one thing I hate:
Every second programming tutorial in Youtube is made by Hindu, and unfortunately their spelling is not so good. That is why learning from this tutorial becomes twice difficult and ridiculously funny...
I need a function of searching only videos with great spelling XD
P.S. It's not question of nation, but of spelling12 -
I have to meet with a staff member who is generally good at her job but has become increasingly disrespectful and resistant to any direction. Her attitude makes it difficult for me to work with her, but every time I talk to her about anything she is so unpleasant about it and afterwards it is almost the silent treatment. Do you have suggestions for me as her manager to address the attitude without making the whole situation even more unpleasant?
I know I can’t make her respect me, but is there a way that discussing her disrespectful attitude will result in a better attitude and not just make the problem worse?3 -
No desire to work hard or learn new coding stuff. This world is so messed up now that I have a difficult time caring about anything anymore. I spend a lot of time browsing for and posting anti-wokeness and pro-libertarian memes and watching the world burn down around me under the illusion that it’s being “saved” and “improved” by monopolistic authoritarian governments and technocracy. All that’s really happening is a handful of really powerful people are pissing on our heads and telling us it’s raining. Invest in umbrella manufacturers.16
Somehow nextjs is super powerful and blazing fast. But the way how the fucking frontend and backend is cluttered together, intervined up down left right sideways and in fucking circles its SO fucking confusing and difficult as shit to work with
Online stores never have an “Exclude X” feature in the filter menus. E.g. I can filter to include all blue clothes but can’t exclude them.
I find it hopeless to achieve anything with applications aimed at non-devs, such as PowerPoint. How the hell can it be so difficult to use the same theme in one presentation as in another? If it had been code, I would just have copied the XML, XAML, include, link, script or whatever code in whatever language on whatever platform from the old project and pasted it into my new project. But with "user-friendly" apps I have no control of how anything actually works. I give up, my presentation will be unthemed. Maybe it's for the better anyway, less distracting graphics.5
So.. playing around with jquerys load() function because I'm trying to implement some updating functionality to a specific div. After researching a bit, it didn't seem like it would be too difficult.. but I could not for the life of me figure out why my template was not displaying! I tried testing with just some basic html and it worked fine. Even took a few snippets from my template and again.. it worked. As soon as I copy/pasted my whole template, the page renders nothing. I was seriously getting frustrated so I started entering the template manually testing each line. It worked until I got to this special div container I made.. went and looked at the css properties for it and..
display: none;
*facepalm*
I forgot I had set it to none because I was using jquerys fadeIn() function xD seriously?? -
I want to make a "game" on learning spoken languages so people can study while not stressing out on the learning.
The disadvantages:
-Vocab
-Method to memorize is different with every person
-Stress and frustration
-Motivation killer
Advantages:
-Can be interesting, depends on user's interest and willingness
-Explore vocab by exploring or reading in-game texts
-Grammar is heavily broken down to help relate meanings and thorough understanding of a sentence as well as slang
--
Why I put disadvantages first was to see how the software will impact a person's negativity/postivity when using it. As in for example, when you see something that is difficult to understand, users tend to procrastinate or drop it due to it being "difficult"/alienated.
-- onto the rant--
Many apps have really awful way of teaching, its just 3-4 apps chucked into 1 aka all-in-one and expects people to pay just because of the all-in-one app containing flash cards, sentences, audio etc. I use my phone (android) and normally during my intern or my way to school, I would do my reading in the other languages, (separate apps, all free). Also apart from that, students sometimes take 2 years to learn but drop because it's difficult.
TL:DR; apps and classes give shitty lessons, I want to outdo them and let students have a better chance at studying new spoken languages.2 -
It's difficult to turn off the brain after a full day of work... you can't sleep 'cos the ideas must be purged or else they will rattle around all night... so you log on remotely just to get it down but proceed to (accidentally) work another nine hours... you finish with only enough time for two hours sleep before you'll need to get up for work again.
So we 3 devs working on a real estate system.... The guy who initially wrote the system wrote it in a fucked up state
Project structure was shit so we had a meeting and I suggested we restructure the project and also have some minimal documentation coz the system is growing we adding more features before current ones are finished
We agreed and started polishing up the system coz it seemed more features we wanted were now becoming more and more difficult to implement
So the other guy tells me to pull some updates.... To my surprise he had started documenting the system without restructuring first.... Had to quickly restructure the thing and push updates
How can 1 start documenting the very same design we want to abandon 🤦 -
Waterfall.
I string dislike the waterfall methodology and much prefer agile or scrum. And it's incredibly difficult that upper management only understands waterfall while claiming to know agile.
Meanwhile they want things completed by deadlines that are only possible with an agile approach. So you have a mishmash of upper management running waterfall with impossible deadlines and developers trying to meet those deadlines running in agile.
Anyone else have this problem? -
Why is it so fucking difficult to delete saved passwords from your Google account? I tried deleting all in Chrome, but as soon as I launched Chrome on another computer all the passwords synced down. And in the online console you can only delete them individually. Luckily I found a JS snippet that grabs all the button elements and clicks through them, but why does Google have to make this so difficult? Fucking hell.1
This kid in my class wants to work on a project idea he has with me.
The project sounds useful. A desktop client to find and download our class assignments from the school’s site with a clean GUI and other useful college note taking and organizing features and the potential to be distributed across the school if done well (there’s more too it but typing a lot on phone irks me)
But all the difficult time consuming and not learned in class parts he’s attempting to throw on me cause I’m the TA so in his words ‘I know more and am better suited for the task’.
What he doesn’t fucking realize is I know more because I do my own damn projects outside of class work and my comfort zone so I can get the knowledge to know more I don’t throw 80% of the work on other people so I can stick with the 20% that we’ve basically done in class before
So long story short I’m building my own version (it is an interesting project) with the smaller features (unnecessary for the main purpose) to be added at a later date if I ever feel like it. And he’s trying to get a different TA to do the majority of the work on his own version
If I’m still working on the project wouldn’t it have been better to just work with him even if I’m doing 80% and all the difficult time consuming aspects. Probably. But I just don’t appreciate people throwing everything difficult at me without actual reasons or time restrictions on themselves. I’d prefer just to do it 100% myself since his 20% would’ve been negligible until later anyway1 -
Hi friends of devRant. I'm looking for some advise.
I love learning new things(tech). I want to try out a lot of things like crypto, game dev, AR/VR, etc. I'm also a student and worried about my career. You know you just can't keep exploring technologies and not focus on a single track. Currently, I'm good with web dev. It feels so difficult at times. I hate leetcoding/competitive programming. So you can guess I'm not great with whiteboard interviews. How do I manage time to learn new things and also be able to land a job in a domain? Do you ever feel the same? Any career advise?5 -
I dunno if this is a rant or an anti-rant, but for some reason, Assembly and low-level development hardly ever tick me off. It absolutely dumbfounds me how what many regard as the most frustrating and difficult ways of programming a binary digital computers is just so enjoyable. I spend hours per day teaching myself C and GNU Assembly and how it works with little actually getting done. It just rarely gets frustrating enough to rant about. Ladies and gentlemen I think I have found my calling!
Do any companies handle pay/promotion well?
Our startup has lost its last 3 or 4 good up-and-coming devs and management has blinders on regarding the issue.
If you're struggling to find engineers, pay at least market rate.
If you're losing good junior and mid-level people, make sure there's some feedback on the path to Senior level.
Why is this so difficult?1 -
Change of technology. There's one time that the team can't decide what tech to use. So after 2 years of production suddenly we moved from Nodejs to Elixir for server side and MySql to Cassandra for database ... It is crazy that time...
So learning a new language it was so difficult as elixir is functional ... (And I was sucks back then) , and Cassandra is something new to me , which is difficult.
Learning Rust
I found out all the pros of Rust and wanted to give it a try. I don't know why it's so weird and difficult to understand the basics. I've been trying to find projects to do with it, so I can learn. Not sure where to start, there's either only basic tutorial or expert talks on YouTube about Rust.8 -
Just spent the whole night awake to do a university coursework.
Not because I was late or it was difficult, but because the framework we had to use was so wrong that I had to take a 20 minutes break for desperation for every line I wrote. -
It is surprisingly difficult to make two things equally high in css (without putting height in pixels). Like two columns of a parent div. You can't use "height: 100%;" out of the box like you can with width.
Why though? I understand that height is more difficult that width. But the parent element has a height. Not by me, but the browser figures it out. So why can't something inside it be 100 % of it. Beats me.
Well at least it works now. -
Any tips to stop getting pissed at your designer's design?
I was given a frontend task after so long (I'm a backend developer who has frontend experience) and the design is very good except architecture wise it's very difficult to build. It's not impossible, but it's very tricky to implement.
Our client has already approved the design, so I guess there's nothing I can do about it
But I am getting constantly annoyed when implementing the design. Whenever I look at the design, I feel like swearing all the time. I feel the designer is very inconsiderate. The design looks very good at big desktop screen, but some part looks dumb in responsive or tablet.
Does anyone ever feel the same? And maybe have tips for me to get by?
My managers have started telling me to stop saying "it's difficult" or "it's too hard". But it is difficult! And I am getting more annoyed when they tell me that.
Whenever I tell the designer that certain part is not gonna work (because we try to make things general so we can reuse), he will argue and somehow ended up saying "come on, just think how prideful you will be after implementing this".3 -
Question: Been thinking about creating a web browser as a side project. It would be a very basic program that can intrepid local html documents, so no HTTP for now. How difficult would this be?5
-
Why is it so difficult to tell the people to not use the same passwords everywhere? I thought of a service which searches all leaked databases and predicts a password based on that as a warning for the user... Having the program told you that your password the user is likely to enter would be XY, because the adobe OR MySpace OR Dropbox passwords for the email OR username entered was that password could be a bit more aggressive but useful to let the users at least think of secure passwords.1
Thanks google for making it so fucking damn difficult to authenticate G Apps users and check their groups/org unit. Makes my fucking work so much harder! Once again, the next build after hitting Ctrl + C while building a project surprised me with `java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Malformed \uxxxx encoding`.
This happens to often in all parts of IT. Someone consults you, tells you your suggestion sounds difficult, then try’s to take a short cut..
My biggest regret is not becoming a programmer sooner in life. Ever since I saw the computer wore tennis shoes when I was 5 I wanted to be a computer programmer. But my brother discouraged me saying it was so difficult but no one did it. So I thought I guess if no one is doing it.... Then in both Junior High and High School they have computer classes but you had to be friends with the teacher to even know it existed in the first place. I was not on good terms with him.
Thanks to a very encouraging Teacher at Art School I finally I was able to pursue my lifelong interest in computers. -
Long time frustration
My close friend wanted to focus on machine learning and AI. in summer he did some research and figured out it is difficult to get those jobs. Now he is learning Angular 2. And applying for web development.
I am tired of people getting into web just because everything else seems difficult to them.
I just don't like people who think web is easy. And take it for granted.
I know comparing to machine learning Web does have an easy entry level barrier. But tired of devs, undermining web development complexity.
I think world thinks
Web is so easy that you can do it even if you hate it.5 -
What do you guys think is the best method to teach juniors web dev? What are some things that would make you love a uni class and learn it?
I am teaching web dev and I find it very hard to engage all the students as almost half of them are not interested and I think they see the class too difficult(web basics?!). This is my first class teaching and I want to gather some feedback here and implement it in my class.
So, basically let me know of anything that makes you love and hate abclass because of the teacher's methodology. Thanks a lot3 -
Looking for help for my daughter who is an American exchange student in Germany struggling to learn to code Java in a classroom that only speaks German. She is using Java-Editor for her assignments but doesn’t know how to translate English-based tutorials into German. Like, what’s the German word for “properties” for finding the properties tab in the UI? That sort of thing. Is there an English to German glossary, or better yet a way to switch the UI to English?
I don’t speak German but I do code, so trying to help her is difficult.
Thanks for any help.6 -
Trying to write a program a la `man` in ncurses and just, is this hell?
I just want a floating header, a scrollable main body that reads from a file, and a command line footer, why is that so difficult? I finally got it to handle resizing terminals but now I need to try to compile it for windows, which does have unofficial ports of ncurses, but I have no idea how to use them.
Should I just restrict the windows version to a non-interactive command instead of a TUI like I want?2 -
Started an apprenticeship almost seven months ago now, don’t get me wrong I enjoy it a lot, but everything I already knew in regards to programming was self taught, so finding a normal paying job was proving to be difficult, I took this apprenticeship then boom, ever since I started, I’ve had recruiters and companies ringing me for jobs??? On the upside I get more qualifications to put on my CV when I complete the apprenticeship and my company is paying for me to do A-Level maths!
Ahh, management. They now decided to implement yet another clown role. Release manager…
😬
I am leaving. I just must leave this workplace!
They have so many roles now and it’s getting increasingly difficult to avoid them. I thought we were flying low before to avoid the radar (we use ci/cd, all automated, deploy all days of the week, so we are good. I mean, we go from business need to implement with (some) quality in minutes. Yes, we make mistakes and we fix them rapidly and continuously).
It will be difficult to stay. I really thought I would enjoy it here but management is making it pretty clear that they are not serious about software. They want fancy titles and pretend to work.
Fire em all I say! No one will notice that they are gone. 🤷🏼♂️4 -
Never work on a feature which is too huge so it needs to be divided among multiple developers. Reason because there are high chances that one of the devs will do one or more of these:
- Follow his/her own coding style rather than what the system already follows.
- Write generic flows based on his/her part alone making it super difficult for rest to reuse.5 -
I have an app I have developed that uses concurrency. My dev env allows me to select different targets. One of those targets is WebAssembly. So I got it configured and decided to test my app. It immediately failed on compile due to the concurrency module missing. I later found that for my dev env concurrency for webassembly is experimental.
So concurrency is a thing for webassembly, but the support on my dev env end is not there yet.
Is threading difficult in webassembly?2 -
Need advice:
So I’m 20 years old. Got a decent job as software engineer with a really good pay and really want to break into machine learning.
Mastered NodeJS (my stack has always had node for the past 5-6 years) and I’m finding it difficult to switch to python for machine learning since things are so engraved in my head in javascript.
Aside from the syntax when I’m watching tutorials or reading books, I see data scientists and mathematicians make design mistakes in their code and it hurts my eyes and triggers my ocd.
I need tips on how to put my mindset in a moldable state so I can judge less and learn more and absorb data. Like you know that philosophy that when u get old your brain can’t learn things as fast anymore? I feel like that’s already happening to me rn at the age of 20.5 -
My site on mobile has long pages, so the menu button that is located in the header becomes difficult to access.
I planned to put an arrow at the bottom to allow users quickly return to the main screen, but this is not a solution to the problem, since not everyone scrolls through the page to the very end.
In theory, I can make a fixed header with the menu button at the top of the page so that the visitors could always see them.
I don't know if it's worth it. What do you think?3 -
We should bring back the death sentence by hanging for those fucking retards who show their software update notifications as fucking popups after I start the program. No, notepad++, I don't give a fuck about your update. Fuck you FileZilla, I'm on a hurry, stop shoving your almost full screen update window in my face. Oh and the visual studio installer. Don't even get me started on the visual studio installer.
Would it be too difficult to show the update notification on the bottom of the window on the status bar? Maybe with a higher contrast color so it's more noticeable?9 -
Today after the week and a lesson time in an high-school I got back home and decided to play some sacred 2
It ends up that the mods add too much difficulty, so I open up the configuration files of the mod (some sort of Lua tables) and then spend like an hour and half doing some reverse engineering on it to find a middle way between the vanilla and the Uber difficult mod
External Storage recommendation questions.
Im in need of some sort of external storage, either a harddrive or a NAS server, but idk what to get.
Price should be reasonable for the security and storage space it gives, so heres what i figured so far for pros and cons:
NAS Server:
+ Bigger capacity
+ Raid option
+ Easily expandable
+ Always accessible via the network (local)
- Difficult to transport (not gonna do that, but still)
- Expensive
- Physically larger
- Consumes power 24/7 (i dont pay for power currently)
Harddrive:
+ Easy to pack away and transport
+ Cheaper
- If drive fails, youre fucked
- If you want larger capacity, you end up with two external backups
What do you guys do? Im not sure what i should do :i
Any advice is appreciated.
It will be used for external backup, as mentioned. For my server and my own pc.12 -
Am I the only one who has trouble with some developers I work with making things too overly complicated? It's fine if it's every once in a while, but when almost every code review takes me hours because their code is messy or perplexing, I want to pull my hair out! Why write 50+ lines for something that could be like 10 lines?
When have you worked with a difficult developer that makes things convoluted for no reason? Share your story so I don't feel so alone in this!2 -
Being greedy is good at some point, but when you're so greedy that you take up a project without any tickets (JIRA Sprint) and requirements over Skype.
That being said, managers should not get greedy all the time.
I mean when the previous developer left he made is so difficult(I am assuming) to run that hourly job, that it took me around
> 4 hours to fix spaghetti code still job not running,
> Fix missing parameters still not working
Finally said to the manager that the configurations are not on the server which are being used in the code. -
Hey DevRant fam :-) hope everyone is doing very well wherever you may be!, i'm currently on my uni break for roughly 3 or so weeks which is fabulous, now i do not have much experience with finance or crypto-currencies!, but i'd like to do something a bit different.
This is something i'd hope to put onto my portfolio, so my idea is something on the lines of a stock market simulator BUT with Crypto currencies, i've been asking people around uni but no help unfortunately!.
So its very similar to a stock market simulator app if you look at things like "Investopedia Stock market simulator" its very much the same concept. The user has x amount of USD or AUD (as an example) and they can buy BTC or Ripple and it either goes up in price or down :-).
So guys that's something id like to create :D i definitely know its difficult and i'm not so sure on how to start :-). If its possible to get some advice on how to start i'd greatly appreciate it!.
Hope you have a wonderful day/night where-ever you are!
(I apologize for rambling on)
Best
Milo :-) -
So this is going to sound perverted or just weird for some of you, but I’m honestly just curious (whole sentence sounds comical). Making a porn site is not that difficult, but how the hell do people get traffic? Seriously, the amount of money one could make is ridiculous.4
Just discovered someone I told about a hack for the computers in school (nothing difficult just booting from a USB) had a link to C2K the company that provides the system and told them about it and now they've patched it up, so in a way, it's my first security vulnerability report, in another way, I can no longer play games and program in free
when it takes more effort to writing a bunch of dumbass mocks and stubs so you can have an automated test, than it does to manually test, because you're too retarded to figure out how the fuck easymock is supposed to work, and being awful at your job, also fuck java imports and easymock for being difficult to work with
shout out to my coworkers for requesting more automated tests
can't wait till it all gets deleted anyway because we're going to delete the code we're testing5 -
Okay..
So, what do I have here?
A cross platform mobile app with NO unit tests.
😕
I have to write a big new feature from scratch. (Things can't go wrong, right?)
Started working on it, pointed out problems with the UI/UX designs. The design changed multiple times, still I thought I could finish it by the expected date. And, so I did.
The feature went through testing, and they found bugs. (Surprise...?)
It's already kinda scary to touch someone's code that has no unit tests and no comments. And I think, it's all the more difficult to not introduce bugs.
Also, had to work on the weekend to fix the bugs.
I had some good learnings here, but I'm not sure how I can prevent bugs without unit tests and proper feedback cycle. :/4 -
So... I got a simple task of choosing the best fitting NIDS/MIDS, as well as deploying it, configuring to fit a specific use case and monitor its outputs for one client at work today...
I'm a little... Anxious. At a first glance, setting up like... Snort... Doesn't seem all that difficult, but I have no idea where this takes me and if what I come up with will ultimately be useful or not... Until now I did simple service configuration changes like apache, nginx, php... And a bit of database management with things like mariadb, mysql, postgresql, mongo or elastic... I feel so... Out of my usual waters.
Do you guys thing a person without a title in network security (or... Any title for that matter) can even manage this?...1 -
People complaining about people pushing to master branch directly: can't you actually protect master from force pushes and have each PR reviewed? Why is that so difficult to understand?3
It's really difficult to stay sane after doing 3hrs of competitive coding plus even after trying so much your code does not run . I really wanna be good at competitive coding but I am horrible. Ahh this is irritating so many hours of thinking shit and nothing workd7
Just sat the shittiest exam of my life yesterday. It involved among other things: TDD with java (on paper), critiquing and rewriting gherkin scenarios, and diagnosing problems with agile teams based on a limited description. I was short for time at the end and chose not to answer some questions because it would tire my hand too much to attempt them, and it's time consuming af to edit stuff you wrote down.
Many other exams are switching to online tests, and this one really could have benefited from that given the sheer volume of crap I had to write down.
I'm basically hoping to God that I didn't fail this thing, but the lowest exam grade I've had so far is 70 so it would be crazy if I did. Still, fuck these people for writing such a difficult exam. -
so, if your TL gave you a task to update all the libraries of an app to their latest version, how are you going to go with it?
Honestly my first reaction was frustration and scare. Coz in android, its already very difficult to run a 1 year old project in the latest studio as a lot of things become incompatible with each other.
but thinking deeply, i think its a nice challange as a software dev.
i got 1 approach in mind ,the bomb blast approach : search for the latest versions of that lib in maven central and replace
any other , more sequential approach that you could think of?1 -
Which degree should I go for, Computer science and Electronic Engineering or Computer Science and Physics?3
As part of mentoring folks was having a round table. All wanted tech help. lists of things to do, learning syllabus, techs to bet on, projects, promotion mantras etc etc.
I asked them how's the work. All started rating about overload and overworked. How difficult it is to find time to do anything else. It became noisy.
So asked how they will find time to do all the above without time. Do they really need mentoring on time management and prioritisation ?
Felt like my invisible tws anc headset turned ON at that moment3 -
When did it become difficult to wrap 3d models in textures? I swear it used to be as simple as dragging a graphic on to an object :(
I feel so old and in the way.2 -
All I really want is to be appreciated, and challenged. Why is that so incredibly difficult to grasp?
-
Yes but you see this function everywhere so why is it so hard for us to implement?
Next time i’m gonna say that this function is everywhere, but why is it so difficult to design? -
Why is it so fucking difficult to update insider builds of Windows? Sigh I've brought this on my self. Don't use insider builds at work.. :/
Love angular and angular material but why is it so difficult for a dialog to inherit scope properties why??? Have been for a whole day on this bug
-
I'm so excited! A company in Scotland has just offered me a role, where for the first 2-4 weeks I'll receive Angular training.
My question is - how difficult did you find angular to learn? Were there any concepts you struggled to understand?4 -
Trying to book a trip to the sun. Filling in personal info. -> "untranslated error message".
Trying again -> no more room for these dates.
Trying again on another computer -> the date itself does lot appear (but other dates do show up as "fully booked")
IS IT SO DIFFICULT?? WHY CAN'T YOU MAKE YOUR WEBZ WORKZ!!?!2 -
I still enjoy developing . The part I'm finding difficult these days is that, if I'm under deadline pressure and need to work overtime; instead of being supported by my family, my wife moans and blames me for doing this job; saying I just want the money (which isn't true) and guilt trips me for not spending time with the kids. So, I get it from both sides. As if life isn't hard enough.1
How complex is it to add a social media "share" button to a c# desktop application?
So, if I wanted to share achievements to social media, how difficult would it be to share to Twitter?1 -
Question/Poll:
As developers, did anyone here get Bixby Voice early access? If so, what do you think it? How difficult is it to implement something with this level of control?1 -
Just cut down registration from 5s api response (because its sending email confirmation) into 70ms using rabbitmq (emails are now delegated in rabbit queue and sent whenever the queue takes place)
But still around 70ms to register which is great and fast (because it also generates jwt token and returns the whole user object + jwt) so its difficult to keep this at 7-9ms response time
Is this normal and is it fine to leave it at 70 or can this be optimized (or should it be)?7 -
I hate libraries and frameworks that make it extremely difficult to use them, making it so that you have to hook into them in a hacky number of ways..
Yuck, just give me a regular library that I can use. -
Morning or Afternoon Folks..
I guess my question to start off with is... Why is SAP so difficult to understand 😫 and Citrix.9 -
I graduated from a non elite institute, from non CS branch. I was working in a not so know startup. It was so difficult to get referrals at big orgs like Amazon, Flipkart...
Now that I'm already in Flipkart, atleast 1 recruiter contacts me each day with openings in the best companies in India... Seriously wth, I made a switch a month ago!1 -
Finally got 3/5 offers from my choices for uni in and it's just so difficult to decide which ones to put down as my firm and insurance (((Computer Science MSc, Physics MSc, Software and Electronics Engineering BEng)-At Queens University Belfast)((Computer Science and Electronic Engineering MEng, Computer Science and Physics BSc)- University of Edinburgh))
When you describe to the business owner as a dev that this is a bad idea but they want it anyways so you just go on and dev it. Then 1 month into dev hell thinking about hanging your self for poor choices they go “This future is too difficult for the customer to understand and its not going to work”. Do you say i told you so or do you hang him with a mouse cable?1
Hmm the build fails because it wants to download grade through http.
"Ah I'll just install it with my package manager"
One apt call later: *still tries to manually download a zip of gradle*
Cool okay, what?
I just want to test and change a minor thing in an open source project, why are you making this so difficult...1
